Horseracing: Frost riding the risk as she gears up to conquer Cheltenham

LONDON (Reuters) – British jump jockey Bryony Frost is gearing up for what could be the most exciting week of her career at next week’s Cheltenham Festival but the 23-year-old is well aware that she is always potentially one fall away from ending it – or worse.

Frost already has a CV littered with injuries, including one horrific experience in July where she fractured multiple bones in her back. Yet like her bone-smashed family before her, she treats such setbacks as a mere occupational hazard.

“I take falls, shake it off and get on with it,” Frost told Reuters. “I’ve grown up watching my brother and dad take hits. I know how to get over it and move on. If your body’s not broken, your next horse could be your next winner, it’s just your mentality.”

Her mentality is admired by one of the sport’s most successful National Hunt trainers, Paul Nicholls, who employs Frost as a full time stable jockey and lets her use some of his best horses.

Frost’s brother Hadden was a successful jump jockey before turning to show-jumping whilst her father is Jimmy Frost, a former jockey who won the Grand National in 1981. Now a trainer, he still plays a big part in his daughter’s life.

“Dad’s my rock. I would be lost without him,” she says.

“Dad let me ride my first racehorse at nine and gave me a mobile phone at four so I could go out riding on my own. It only had his number on it.”

Racing is overwhelmingly high risk, with an average of one fall in every 16 rides. Frost shows no fear, despite the fact both her brother and her father broke their backs racing and her cousin Sarah Gaisford was paralyzed in a fall.

Frost herself has sustained multiple injuries, including one when a fall damaged her kidneys so badly that, after a brush with death, she underwent 12 operations and two months in hospital.

“Then I had a fall last summer and sustained a lacerated pancreas and liver, an aneurism, a cracked sternum and I fractured T8 and T7 (bones) in my back,” she says unperturbed.

‘REBUILT MY BODY’

Frost spent five weeks in Oaksey House, a rehab center owned by the Injured Jockeys Fund. “I owe my career to those guys,” she adds. “They rebuilt my body and channeled my mind. You can feel so lost when you’re injured because your body is not keeping up with your mind.

“People have said to me ‘is it worth it?’ But horses and racing is my reason for living, I spend every waking hour thinking about it. There is nothing like it, that partnership you can have with a horse.

“They can’t talk but you connect with them by observing and feeling, through their body and breathing. They are all completely different and the quicker you work them out and become their friend, the more they are going to do with you.”

Frodon, the horse she won three out of four races with this season, may give Frost her first experience of The Gold Cup – the race they all want to win. The line-up will officially be announced on the day of the race next Friday.

“Frodon is the warrior you want to go to war with,” she says.

“It will be a massive moment for me to partner him. He gives me everything just as I give my everything to him.”

After recent good form for Nicholls and trainer Neil King, Frost is likely to have a handful of rides at The Festival but refuses to discuss her chances.

“I don’t set goals or say, I’m going to beat this person or win that race,” she says.

“It’s The Festival and such a rare thing to win. If you look at the top of the mountain, it’s a long way up but if you take it step by step then you will keep going up. If you only make it half way, well you’ve still done well and if you get to the top, only then you can take in the view.”

Great British Racing are showcasing extraordinary women in racing for International Women’s Day at The Cheltenham Festival from 12-15 March. For more information visit gbraci.ng/IWD

U.S. military retrieves possible World War Two remains from Myanmar

MANDALAY (Reuters) – The United States on Tuesday retrieved the possible remains of service members who went missing in Myanmar during the Second World War, marking the first such mission to Myanmar carried out by U.S. military aircraft, American officials said.

After a brief ceremony, the remains were taken from Myanmar’s second-largest city, Mandalay, to a laboratory in the United States for further analysis and identification.

“We remember. You are not forgotten,” said the U.S. ambassador to Myanmar, Scot Marciel, at the ceremony. He said the mission was meant to honor the memory of the fallen service members and to show appreciation for their service.

From 1942 to 1945, the airspace over Myanmar, then called Burma, served as an important supply corridor from India to China after the Japanese captured the northern town of Lashio, severing the last major Allied supply route over land into China.

During the period, American transport planes made daily flights over the eastern Himalayas, a perilous route called the Hump, according to the website of the U.S. embassy in China.

The remains are believed to be from a B-25G aircraft with seven crew members onboard that crashed in February 1944 in Myanmar’s northwestern Sagain region, U.S. officials said.

More than 82,000 Americans remain missing from past conflicts, and 632 U.S. service members, mostly air crews, disappeared in Myanmar during World War Two, U.S. government data show.

Relations between the two countries have chilled after Washington last year sanctioned some Myanmar military and police commanders and army units, accusing them of ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya Muslim minority.

Myanmar has rejected the charges, saying it was fighting Rohingya “terrorists”.

About 730,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar after August 2017 following what a U.S. government investigation described as a “well-planned and coordinated” campaign of mass killings, gang rapes and other atrocities against the Rohingya by the Myanmar military.

March 27, 2019

BOGOTA (Reuters) – Food and agriculture group Cargill Inc could invest up to $1 billion in Latin America over the next five years, its chief executive said, and will maintain its operations in Venezuela despite challenges brought on by an economic crisis.

Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Chile offer favorable conditions for private investors, Chief Executive David MacLennan said in an interview late on Tuesday, though he declined to provide details of possible purchases by the company in coming years.

U.S.-based Cargill recently bought Colombian poultry processors Pollos El Bucanero and Campollo and expects to invest between $200 and $300 million in the Andean country in the next two years, MacLennan said, mostly to improve efficiency and expand the capacity of two processing plants.

“We don’t have exact figures at this time, but I will say that if we have $200 or $300 million in Colombia, in this whole area in five years we could easily reach $1 billion,” MacLennan said during a visit to Bogota.

Colombia’s political stability and geographic position are attractive for investors, said MacLennan, who met with President Ivan Duque on Tuesday.

Despite a deep economic and political crisis in Venezuela, Cargill will continue to produce flour, pasta and cooking oil there, MacLennan said.

The company employs some 1,600 people in the deeply polarized country, where hunger, shortages of medical supplies and blackouts have spooked many international investors.

“We will not surrender, it’s a very important country for us,” said MacLennan. “We are very worried for our employees and their security. I think of them every day and hope for a better future.”

Halep sees off Wang to move into Miami semis

March 27, 2019

(Reuters) – Simona Halep overcame a second-set lapse to secure a 6-4 7-5 Miami Open quarter-final victory over China’s Wang Qiang on Wednesday that put the Romanian one win away from reclaiming the world’s top ranking.

Second seed Halep stormed back from 5-1 down in the second set and saved three set points before wrapping up the win over 18th-seeded Wang in 89 minutes.

Halep started strongly and broke Wang three times to race into a 4-1 lead before closing out the first set when she cut off the angle on a short forehand and blasted a winner into the open court.

But Wang came out firing in the second set, breaking Halep three times and holding to love in back-to-back service games to build a 5-1 lead.

Wang nearly forced a decisive third set as she threatened to break Halep again when she quickly jumped out to 0-40 in the 10th game but the Romanian displayed confident net play to get out of the jam.

Halep matched her best result in Miami, which came in 2015 when she lost to Serena Williams in the semis.

“Playing again in the semi-finals is going to be a big challenge. And maybe I can do my best result here and play in the final,” Halep said in an on-court interview. “It’s going to be a big match in the next round.”

Up next for Halep will be the winner of the all-Czech quarter-final between fifth seed Karolina Pliskova and Marketa Vondrousova which kicks off the evening session at 7:00 p.m. ET (2300 GMT).

Halep, the highest seed left in the draw following Naomi Osaka’s third-round exit, said that while she is aware of her chance to reclaim top spot in the rankings that is not on her mind.

“If I play well, if I play my best tennis, I have a better chance to become number one again,” said Halep. “But it’s not in my mind. I just want to find my rhythm, to find my level and just play as good as possible.”

Axios: Trump Considers Attending WH Journalists' Dinner

President Donald Trump is considering attending the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, an event he has boycotted the last two years, Axios reported on Wednesday.

Trump has not yet decided on whether or not he is attending the April 27 dinner, but some are suggesting that he would go as part of an extended “victory lap” after the Mueller report concluded that Trump did not collude with the Russians during the 2016 election campaign.

Aviso, however, said it is not clear if the president is serious about attending and said it would be awkward for everyone if he did decide to go to the event.

Since Attorney General Bill Barr sent a summary of the Mueller report to Congress, Trump has increased his attacks on the media.

"The Mainstream Media is under fire and being scorned all over the World as being corrupt and FAKE,” Trump tweeted.

“For two years they pushed the Russian Collusion Delusion when they always knew there was No Collusion. They truly are the Enemy of the People and the Real Opposition Party!"

(Reuters) – Britain’s defense company BAE Systems on Tuesday said it had won additional funding up to $575 million from the U.S. Army to begin production of its new armored vehicles that would replace the Vietnam War-era M113 fleet of personnel carriers.

The new vehicles, called the Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV), are ‘more survivable’ with all-terrain mobility capabilities, BAE said.

Total funding for the initial production of the new vehicles, including previously awarded funds to support production planning, stands at $873 million, the defense contractor said.

“(The fresh award) brings soldiers one step closer to deploying this critical capability for completing their missions and coming home safely,” said Bill Sheehy, AMPV program director for BAE Systems’ combat vehicles business.

Amnesty urges UAE to release activist on hunger strike

April 10, 2019

DUBAI (Reuters) – Amnesty International called on Wednesday on the United Arab Emirates to release a local activist who has been on hunger strike for more than three weeks, citing concern over his health and prison conditions.

Emirati campaigner Ahmed Mansoor was sentenced to 10 years in 2018 for criticizing the government on social media in a case that has drawn criticism from the United Nations and international rights groups.

“We are greatly concerned that his lengthy hunger strike would result in the deterioration of his health,” Amnesty International said in a statement.

The rights group said Mansoor was being held in solitary confinement. It urged the UAE authorities to ensure his detention conditions comply with international standards and that he be granted regular access to his family and medical care.

The UAE government media office did not immediately respond when asked to comment.

Mansoor, an electrical engineer and poet, was among five activists convicted of insulting the UAE’s rulers in 2011. They were pardoned the same year.

He was arrested again in March 2017 on charges of publishing false information and rumors, promoting a “sectarian and hate-incited” agenda, and using social media to harm “national unity and social harmony” and damage the country’s reputation.

He was one of a tiny number of publicly active rights campaigners in the UAE, a trade and tourism hub that tolerates little public criticism.

In 2015 Mansoor received the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders, an annual prize awarded in Geneva by a panel of international human rights organizations, for his work documenting the human rights situation in the U.S.-allied Gulf Arab state.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

Lakewood police tweeted there were multiple fatalities but did not give a specific number. Six people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released, according to the paper.

Lanes in both directions were closed and expected to remain so into Friday morning.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s a look at what you need to know today …

EXCLUSIVE: Trump says ‘Sleepy Joe’ Biden doesn’t have what it takes

President Trump, in a wide-ranging, exclusive phone interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, dismissed the launch of former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Biden, the president said, has name recognition but he won’t “be able to do the job.” When asked about Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Trump criticized his record, saying Sanders had “misguided energy” and asserted that Sanders “talks a lot” but hasn’t accomplished anything. The president referred to former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas as “a fluke” who had lost much momentum and outright dismissed Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg — although he said he was “rooting” for Buttigieg. (Trump could address Biden and the other Democratic presidential candidates when he speaks today before the National Rifle Association.)

The Democratic Party’s youth movement: Biden’s biggest challenge?
Former Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Howard Dean warned Joe Biden about the troubles he may face in his presidential campaign, especially from the “35-year-olds” who Dean says have been running the party — a clear nod to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and fellow freshmen Democrats. “This is a very different party than even the party Joe Biden ran in in 2012. Very different,” Dean continued. “A lot of people could win this race. There’s 20 people in there. I think it’s going to take $20 million to get to the starting line. If you can’t raise $20 million, you’re gone, and I think that’s going to take care of about six or eight of these folks. … But it is not the same party that it was five years ago.” A progressive political group that boosted Ocasio-Cortez’s bid for Congress last year vowed to oppose Biden and blasted him as part of the “old guard.”

More tales from the FBI texts
Text messages between former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page indicate they discussed using briefings to the Trump team after the 2016 election to identify people they could “develop for potential relationships,” track lines of questioning and “assess” changes in “demeanor” – language one GOP lawmaker called “more evidence” of irregular conduct in the original Russia probe. Fox News has learned the texts, initially released in 2018 by a Senate committee, are under renewed scrutiny, with GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley and Homeland Security Committee chair Ron Johnson sending a letter Thursday night to Attorney General Bill Barr pushing for more information on the matter. President Trump, speaking on Fox News’ “Hannity” Thursday night, responded to this report by accusing Strzok and Page of an attempted “coup.” “They were trying to infiltrate the administration,” he said.

Kim accuses US of acting in ‘bad faith’
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, fresh off his summit with  Russian President Vladimir Putin, said the U.S. has been acting in “bad faith” since his Hanoi meeting with President Trump over the stalemated issue of North Korean denuclearization. The North Korean leader told the Korean Central News Agency that, “the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the region is now at a standstill and has reached a critical point,” the Straits Times of Singapore reported. Kim warned that the situation “may return to its original state as the U.S. took a unilateral attitude in bad faith at the recent second DPRK-US summit talks,” the Korean Central News Agency added.

NFL Draft 2019: It’s all about defense
The first round of the 2019 NFL Draft saw a run on defensive players, with eight of the top 12 picks in Nashville coming from that side of the ball. After Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was taken first overall by the Arizona Cardinals, the San Francisco 49ers started a run of four straight front-seven players by taking Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa with the second overall pick — the highest draft slot for any Buckeye since left tackle Orlando Pace went No. 1 overall to the St. Louis Rams in 1997.
