March 21, 2019

BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s imports and exports rebounded in the first half of March, Gao Feng, a commerce ministry spokesman said on Thursday, adding that the overall trade performance in the first quarter remained stable.

China’s exports tumbled the most in three years in February while imports fell for a third straight month, pointing to a further slowdown in the economy.

Michigan mother fatally shot 3 young daughters in woods before killing self: police

A Michigan woman shot and killed her three young daughters in the woods on Monday before driving the bodies back to her home and killing herself, police said.

Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young, with the Kent County Sheriff’s Department, said Wednesday that the deaths of Alaina Rau, 2, Cassidy Rodery, 6, and Kyrie Rodery, 8, have been classified as homicides by the medical examiner’s office. The death of their mother, 28-year-old Aubrianne Moore, was ruled a suicide, WOOD reported.

Police believe they've accurately mapped out the events that led to Monday’s deaths. They say it started with Moore picking up her two oldest girls from school around noon.

POLICE DISCOVER ‘FULLY SKELETONIZED’ REMAINS OF FLORIDA TEEN WHO DISAPPEARED DAYS AFTER ALLEGEDLY WITNESSING KILLING

After stopping for lunch, LaJoye-Young said, Moore took all three girls to their great-grandparents' property in Solon Township, shooting them behind the home using her boyfriend’s bolt-action hunting rifle, WOOD reported.

Moore is said to have put the bodies in her car before driving to her boyfriend’s home and turning the gun on herself. All four bodies were discovered around 4 p.m.

No note was left, but investigators say that Moore had grappled with mental health problems.

KIDNAPPED GIRL HANIA AGUILAR, 13, MOST LIKELY DIED OF ASPHYXIA, AUTOPSY FINDS

According to Newaygo County Probate Court records obtained by WYFF, a social worker asked that Moore be hospitalized back in September because she was reportedly paranoid and suffered from visual and auditory hallucinations.

“Aubrianne is keeping her kids home from school because the television told her there would be a school bus accident today,” the social worker wrote. "Aubrianne stays awake at night believing people will break into her home. Aubrianne is not eating believing food is being poisoned.”

INDIANA GIRLS’ MURDERS STILL DEFY SOLUTION, TWO YEARS ON, BUT PROSECUTOR’S ‘CONFIDENT’ KILLER WILL BE FOUND

The social worker continued: “I believe the individual has mental illness and as a result of that mental illness the individual can reasonably be expected within the near future to intentionally or unintentionally seriously physically injure self or others and has engaged in an act or acts or made significant threats that are substantially supportive of this expectation.”

Records showed that Moore was hospitalized for 10 days at a Grand Rapids psychiatric hospital.

LaJoye-Young said that the murder-suicide may have been a result of Moore believing that she “was protecting the kids from something,” citing writings suggestive of that notion.

Beijing's Forbidden City illuminated for Lantern Festival

Beijing's Forbidden City has been illuminated and opened to the general public for night visits for the first time to celebrate China's Lantern Festival.

As night fell, visitors were welcomed by a light show at the Meridian Gate exhibition hall. A dazzling array of lights also lit up the Supreme Harmony Hall. Chinese characters and traditional decorations were projected on the outer walls.

Along a corridor, the ancient Chinese painting "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" was projected on rooftops.

The Forbidden City, which served as China's political center for more than 500 years, is now known as the Palace Museum. China's Lantern Festival marks the end of Lunar New Year festivities.

TOKYO (Reuters) – Reigning world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France took a decisive step toward a fourth ice dancing crown on Friday after clinching a strong lead with an elegant tango-themed rhythm dance.

Skating last before a packed house in Saitama, the Olympic silver medalists — who narrowly missed gold at Pyeongchang after a mishap with Papadakis’s costume in the short program — were awarded 88.42 points for their sultry routine.

“We’re very pleased with this performance, because we skated really well. We love this program, we love the choreography, we love working on it,” Papadakis said.

“There is a mandatory rhythm every year and it works for us every time more or less … This time, the Tango theme was right up our alley, that is a theme that we love.”

The pair have also been European champions every year since the 2014-2015 season but had to settle for Olympic silver last year when the clasp on Papadakis’s costume came loose.

More than five points behind after a clean, sharp routine were Russians Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov, who were only fourth in the European Championships but clinched gold at the Russian nationals and silver at the Grand Prix Final.

“I am overwhelmed with emotions,” said Sinitsina, after the two took 83.94 points.

“I am trying to restrain myself and concentrate on our elements, our program, but the emotions just burst out of me. It is a true joy to skate here.”

In third place were fellow Russians Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin, fourth in the 2018 Grand Prix Final and second in the European Championships.

Bukin fell to the ice when their routine ended and mouthed “Wow!” when their score, a season’s best 83.10, came up.

“We have made an attempt to fix the mistakes that we have made at the Russian nationals and the European Championship,” he said.

“We wanted to skate heartily and enjoy our performance.”

The World Championships continue at the arena north of Tokyo on Friday evening with the ladies free skate, where Olympic gold medalist Alina Zagitova has a commanding lead.

American skater Mariah Bell on Wednesday made contact with South Korean rival Lim Eun-soo in a practice, leaving the Korean with a cut leg and fanning memories of the Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan affair in the 1990s.

But the International Skating Union (ISU) ruled that the incident was unintentional and Korean skating officials said the two might meet later on Friday so Bell could apologize.

Players win will fuel McIlroy’s Masters belief: Strange

April 4, 2019

(Reuters) – Rory McIlroy’s recent victory at the Players Championship can propel him to a first Green Jacket at next week’s Masters, according to former Augusta runner-up Curtis Strange.

Northern Irishman McIlroy ended a run of near misses to win the prestigious Florida tournament by one stroke from American Jim Furyk — his first title for a year.

The 29-year-old former world number one is aiming for victory in the Masters to complete his set of majors, although he has not won one since the PGA Championship in 2014.

After five top-six finishes in succession on the PGA Tour this year, Strange said victory at Sawgrass would send McIlroy to Augusta brimming with confidence in his ability to finish.

“I think that was huge,” Strange, twice U.S. Open champion and working for broadcaster ESPN at the Masters, said.

“He didn’t have to reminded that he hadn’t finished off in the last year or so after playing well the first three days.

“To get over that little hurdle and win on really a kind of quirky golf course, similar to Augusta, to win on a big stage like that, you think about yourself differently.”

McIlroy was in contention to win last year’s Masters after a third-round 65 but blew his chances with a 74 on Sunday.

“If he’s in contention come Sunday afternoon, it’s a different Rory after winning The Players,” American Strange said.

“It’s such a mind game, so I think it was huge. Plus he’s got the motivation. He knows what he’s going up against, completing the Slam here.

“I think more than anything else, Rory has to calm down and just get the job done.”

Several big-name European players are being tipped to win the title but Strange says Italian Francesco Molinari, the British Open champion, has the accuracy to mount a serious challenge.

“He’s one-up on most of the players because he’s going to play it in the middle of the fairway every time,” Strange said.

Sri Lanka imposes daily 4-hour power cuts due to dry weather

Sri Lanka's government is imposing daily four-hour power cuts as dry weather lowers the output of hydropower plants.

The state-run Ceylon Electricity Board announced Monday that electricity will be shut off for three hours during the daytime and one hour at night.

The board said dry, hot weather has caused energy demand to rise while water levels in reservoirs have fallen, forcing it to "restrict electricity generation from hydropower plants to save the water for drinking and irrigation requirements."

Sri Lanka depends largely on hydropower to generate electricity. During the dry season, the country faces power cuts when water levels go down, making it difficult to generate power.

EU condemns Venezuelan efforts to prosecute Guaido: statement

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – European Union governments condemned on Thursday a measure by Venezuela’s Constituent Assembly that allows for the trial of opposition leader Juan Guaido, considered by many Western nations as the de facto head of state.

“The EU rejects the decision taken by the non-recognized National Constituent Assembly to lift Juan Guaido’s parliamentary immunity. This decision constitutes a serious violation of the Venezuelan constitution, as well as of the rule of law and separation of power,” the EU said in a statement.

“These acts undermine a political way out of the crisis and only lead to further polarization and escalation of tensions in the country,” the statement said.

A California man who allegedly fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight last month before fleeing the country has been returned to the U.S. following his arrest in Mexico on Wednesday, authorities said.

Julio Cesar Rocha, 25, of Montlcair, is accused of shooting his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend Thalia Flores and a second unidentified male victim March 21 around 2:45 p.m. while the two were sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of a discount store in Chino. Both communities are about 36 miles east of Los Angeles.

Flores died at the scene. The man, whose name was not released, walked to a nearby hospital where he’s recovering from his gunshot wounds.

Rocha allegedly fled the scene and remained at large for more than a month, the Daily Bulletin reported. He was formally arrested at 4:30 p.m. after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport from Mexico, KTLA-TV reported.

The suspect was booked at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on murder and attempted murder charges, the City of Chino Police Department said on Facebook.

Flores ended her seven-year relationship with Rocha just two months before her death and still lived in fear of him until that point, a sister of the victim, Bernice Flores, told the Daily Bulletin.

“He said himself so many times to other people, ‘If I can’t have her, no one will.’ ” Flores said, adding that her sister stayed in the relationship longer that she would have liked in fear that Rocha would hurt her or her family if they broke up.

Rocha was convicted on misdemeanor battery in 2016 and sentenced to 60 days in prison. He was originally charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, but the charges were lowered in a plea deal, the Daily Bulletin reported.

Rocha was convicted of misdemeanor resisting or obstructing a peace officer in 2014. A second charge of misdemeanor battery was dropped in a plea deal, and Rocha was ordered to complete a 26-week anger management course, according to San Bernardino County Superior Court records. Rocha was later arrested and sentenced to 10 days behind bars for failing to complete the course.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”
