Afghans on social media demand punishment for child killers

Many Afghans are taking to social media, demanding harsh punishment for two men arrested in the kidnapping and killing of a little girl in Kabul, a case that has shaken the city's residents.

Kabul police chief Gen. Sayed Mohammad Roshandil told reporters on Wednesday that the men confessed to their crime. The two were brought before cameras during the presser, which was broadcast live.

Roshandil says the kidnappers had demanded $300,000 from the girl's father. He promised they would be dealt with speedily and according to the law.

The case has caused a stir on social media with users uploading photographs of the six-year-old girl, identified as Mahsa, who was kidnapped on Monday. Many are calling for "justice for Mahsa" and demanding authorities do a better job in protecting children.

March 18, 2019

Sean Couturier scored with 3.4 seconds left in overtime Sunday to give the visiting Philadelphia Flyers a critical 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Couturier’s 29th goal came when he blasted the puck from the right circle to the far side past goaltender Matt Murray, who also gave up James van Riemsdyk’s tying goal with 18.8 seconds left in regulation.

Flyers goalie Carter Hart, in just his second start in 11 games, made 41 saves.

The game was played 16,000 days after Philadelphia (35-29-8, 78 points) last won the Stanley Cup in 1975, and the two points helped keep the Flyers’ playoff hopes alive. They are six points out of an Eastern Conference wild-card spot with 10 games to play.

Islanders 3, Wild 2 (OT)

Brock Nelson scored at 1:04 of overtime as New York defeated host Minnesota, which had twice erased one-goal deficits.

Jordan Eberle and Anders Lee also scored, and goaltender Thomas Greiss made 32 saves as the Islanders won for the fifth time in their past seven games and bounced back from a disappointing 2-1 loss to the Red Wings on Saturday in Detroit.

Zach Parise and Jared Spurgeon scored for Minnesota, which lost for the fourth time in its past five games. Goalie Alex Stalock, making just his second start in the past 14 games, stopped 17 of 20 shots.

Golden Knights 6, Oilers 3

Jonathan Marchessault scored two goals, including what proved to be the game-winner early in the third, and Malcolm Subban had 16 saves to lead Vegas over visiting Edmonton.

Mark Stone, Cody Eakin, Brayden McNabb and Alex Tuch also scored goals, and William Karlsson and Reilly Smith each had two assists for the Knights (40-27-5, 85 points), who won for the eighth time in nine games.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Leon Draisaitl and Kris Russell scored goals, and Connor McDavid had two assists for Edmonton (32-33-7, 71 points), which remained seven points out of the second wild card in the Western Conference. It was the eighth straight multi-point game for McDavid, who now has 105 points this season.

Sabers 4, Blues 3 (SO)

Sam Reinhart scored in the third round of the shootout as host Buffalo snapped a seven-game skid with a victory over St. Louis.

Reinhart nearly won the contest in the waning moments of overtime, but his shot caromed off the left post.

Buffalo captain Jack Eichel and St. Louis forward Tyler Bozak each scored in the first round of the shootout. Reinhart’s bid banked off Jake Allen’s glove and into the net to set the stage for former Sabres forward Ryan O’Reilly, whose shot deflected off the crossbar to end the game.

Avalanche 3, Devils 0

Tyson Barrie scored two goals, Philipp Grubauer had 22 saves and Colorado kept its postseason hopes alive with a win over New Jersey in Denver.

Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and an assist to give him 91 points on the season. He joins Hall of Famer Peter Forsberg as the only two Avalanche players to have consecutive 90-point seasons. Colorado trails Arizona by four points in the Western Conference wild-card race. The Avalanche host the Coyotes on March 29.

Cory Schneider stopped 31 shots for the Devils, who had their two-game winning streak snapped. New Jersey has not won three straight since late December.

Canucks 3, Stars 2 (SO)

Josh Leivo’s goal in the fourth round of the shootout lifted visiting Vancouver past Dallas.

The Canucks posted their second win in three games, while the Stars took their second straight loss, which prevented Dallas from gaining ground on St. Louis for third place in the Central Division.

Tim Schaller led the Canucks with two goals, marking the first two-goal game of his NHL career. Jamie Benn and Taylor Fedun tallied for the Stars.

Ducks 3, Panthers 2

Adam Silfverberg scored with 4:43 to play as Anaheim continued to play spoiler with a victory over visiting Florida.

Devin Shore and Adam Henrique also scored goals, and Ryan Getzlaf had a pair of assists as the Ducks (30-35-9, 69 points), won for the sixth time in their past nine games, with all six of those victories coming against teams either currently in a qualifying position for the playoffs or fighting to become eligible.

The Panthers (32-28-12, 76 points) were the furthest out from eligibility in that group, but their hopes had been raised with a four-game winning streak that had them believing they could grab the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

March 21, 2019

BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd said on Thursday higher sales drove its 2018 net profit up 18 percent, even as growing political uncertainty affected overall domestic demand.

The company, which is China’s most globally high-profile car maker thanks to the Geely group’s investments in European manufacturers Volvo and Daimler, posted a full-year net profit of 12.55 billion yuan ($1.88 billion), up from the previous year’s 10.63 billion.

That compared with the 12.8 billion yuan average estimate of 34 analysts, according to Refinitiv data.

Total revenue for the year was 106.60 billion yuan, up from 92.76 billion yuan in 2017, it said. That slightly missed the 108.59 billion yuan estimated by analysts, according to Refinitiv data.

Kudlow: Trump Might Cut $125B If Congress Rejects His Budget

President Donald Trump might initiate a budget sequester and allow $125 billion in cuts for both defense and non-defense spending if Congress does not agree to his 2020 budget, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Thursday, according to The Hill.

"The president has indicated, if the spending caps going all the way back to the 2011 deal are not met, then we will sequester across-the-board, both defense and non-defense, excluding entitlements, but we will run by those rules," Kudlow told The Hill's Newsmaker Series event Thursday. "That's tough stuff. I think that's appropriate."

The spending caps must be raised by Congress at the risk of a 10 percent spending cut in 2020, dropping defense spending $71 billion and non-defense spending $54 billion, according to The Hill.

Trump's 2020 budget sticks to the caps set by the 2011 Budget Control Act (BCA), but $96 billion of defense spending would come from an off-budget account that would have to be approved by Congress, according to the report.

Thus far, Democrats have proposed to increase spending caps by $17 billion for defense and $34 billion for non-defense, while Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is going to meet with congressional leaders to discuss spending, perhaps outside of Trump's budget request, per The Hill.

If Trump does not agree to the bipartisan congressional deal that works around his budget, and not with it, he can veto raising the caps, shut down the government, and force the government into sequestration by mid-December, according to the report.

A Larger-Than-Life Rebuke to Liberals' Anti-Business Politics

Amazon’s decision last week to cancel plans to build a New York City campus was costly for the Big Apple. The online retailing giant would reportedly have bolstered New York’s coffers to the tune of $27 billion in tax revenue over 25 years, and created 25,000 to 40,000 new jobs with an average salary of $150,000. Also lost were the 1,300 construction jobs annually over a multi-year build-out of the campus in New York’s Long Island City neighborhood.

The loss was much lamented by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo, feuding rivals who have both been mentioned as prospective Democratic candidates for president, and who had temporarily buried the hatchet to work together on the Amazon deal.

But not all of New York’s lefty pols bemoaned the missed opportunity. In fact, there were those who cheered. Some Democrats felt that the deal wasn’t sweet enough for organized labor — a sore subject for Amazon — or that a $3 billion tax incentive to lure the company was bad business. Amazon made it clear in a statement that these politicos were a direct instrument of the deal’s demise, writing that “[w]hile polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.”

Amazon’s statement was perhaps more of an understatement. City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer, who represents the district where the headquarters would’ve been built, held a press conference to declare victory over Amazon. Joined by state Sen. Jessica Ramos, and flanked by union members and activists, Van Bramer gloated that “when we were faced with the richest man in the world and the richest company in the world, we did not buckle.” He added that it was just as well that Amazon bailed on the deal, because it would not “adopt our New York values.” (Van Bramer was heckled by a business owner, who called him a “job killer.”) Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. tweeted that Amazon should have rolled “equivalent concessions” for the people of New York into the deal.

Meanwhile, Cuomo ripped fellow Democrats in the state Senate such as Deputy Majority Leader Mike Gianaris, asserting that “a small group of politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community.”

But perhaps the brightest luminary among New York City’s anti-Amazon politicians is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, she of the Green New Deal. Ocasio-Cortez lauded the victory of “everyday New Yorkers” against Amazon’s “corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world.” She also suggested, bizarrely, that the incentives for Amazon — mostly tax breaks rather than direct handouts — could now be spent on social programs. For this, she was ripped by the likes of de Blasio, as well as Andrew Ross Sorkin of the New York Times, who tweeted that “there isn’t a $3 billion pile of money that can now be spent on subways or education.”

Ocasio-Cortez has rapidly become a bona fide political star who, in a matter of mere months, has reframed the national discussion around social and economic policy. When you are taking a stand against someone with that kind of wattage, you need to go big. And that’s just what one advocacy organization is doing.

The Job Creators Network, a pro-small business group, has rented a billboard in New York City’s fabled Times Square. The billboard, which blares “Thanks For Nothing, AOC!,” derides the congresswoman for $12 billion in lost economic activity, and directs the public to the website ThanksAOC.com. A hashtag at the bottom of the billboard sets the terms of the debate: #SocialismTakesCapitalismCreates.

"The self-described democratic socialist needs to understand that socialism takes and capitalism creates," said Job Creators Network President and CEO Alfredo Ortiz. "In the case of Amazon and New York, Rep. Cortez and her friends took billions of dollars of opportunity away from the New York community."

A request for comment sent to Ocasio-Cortez’s press office was not answered.

The billboard’s theatrics are worthy of Broadway. But the underlying message is dead serious. The large-scale social programs promoted by politicians like Ocasio-Cortez come with a hefty price tag. New York’s notoriously unfriendly tax climate is tied to a mass-migration out of the Empire State, which also places below the national average in job growth. And this doesn’t just apply to the hinterlands of upstate New York. The five boroughs of New York City are experiencing an accelerating negative net migration.

What the people behind Job Creators Network know, and what politicians on the left need to come to terms with, is that sometimes the best way to lure businesses is to create small pockets of freedom from the restrictive climate they have created. Here was a prime opportunity to bring in a high-wage company to help to underwrite New York’s fiscal needs, and peddlers of Ocasio-Cortez’s new brand of American economics pushed them away. As Seth Barron of City Journal aptly argued, the far left is preserving stagnation and calling it progress.

For now, a billboard stands in Times Square reminding AOC and those like her that ideas have consequences. And price tags.

France’s EDF in race to convert Cordemais plant from coal to biomass

CORDEMAIS, France (Reuters) – French utility EDF aims to convert its 1,200-megawatt (MW) Cordemais coal-fired power plant by spring 2022 into one that burns pellet fuel made from discarded wood, giving the unit a new lease of life.

If successful, the process – known as Ecocombust – could be exported and adapted to other coal plants, saving jobs, while Cordemais would boost France’s security of supply in winter.

But EDF must convince the government by autumn that the project is financially and environmentally viable. French grid operator RTE is also expected to determine by April whether the plant is surplus to requirements.

In its long-term energy plan, France has laid out moves to phase out electricity generation from coal by 2022, with the goal of decarbonizing energy production by 2050.

The decision sounded the death knell for the five remaining coal-fired generators in France, with an installed capacity of around 3,000 MW. Three of the generators – Cordemais 4 and 5, and Havre 4 – are operated by state-controlled EDF.

Cordemais in western France was overhauled two years ago to meet new emissions and safety standards at a cost of several million euros, and could keep operating until 2035, EDF says.

France’s two other coal generators, Emile Huchet 6 and Provence 5, with a combined installed capacity of 1,200 MW, are operated by German utility Uniper.

EDF executives said the Ecocombust project, already in an advanced test phase, would burn pellets made from discarded “class B” wood and garden waste, for large-scale power generation. The project is the first of its kind, they say.

Although pellets from wood chips and sawdust are widely used for heating, Eric Bret, EDF’s head of thermal power generation, said the process was different because the company would not cut down any trees.

“The pellets are made from … everyday objects such as beams, doors, window frames and furniture, which until now are mostly recycled or buried in landfill,” he said.

SOURCED LOCALLY

Lionel Olivier, director of the Cordemais and Havre power plants, said the pellets would be 70 percent “class B” wood and 30 percent residue from grass, tree branches and garden waste, all sourced within a radius of 150 km (93 miles).

He said EDF was setting up a supply chain that included municipal waste authorities and companies, but would need state aid.

EDF declined to say what the conversion would cost and how much it had invested in the process.

At capacity, it aims to replace around 1.3 million to 2 million tonnes of coal imported annually from Poland, Australia and the United States, with about 700,000 tonnes of biomass.

Tests carried out in August with 80 percent pellet fuel and 20 percent coal to generate electricity for over four hours were successful, Olivier said.

The pellets have 20 percent less energy or caloric value than coal, which could reduce each generator’s output capacity to 530 MW from 600 MW currently, he added.

Cordemais’ production would focus on periods of peak power demand in winter. After the conversion, output would be reduced to 800 hours annually from 4,000 hours, he said.

“Runtime would be five times less than the current production using coal but it will focus on a period when power prices are higher and more profitable,” Olivier said.

He added that the plant would also use five times less coal and emit five times less carbon dioxide.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
