‘Green Book’ enjoys biggest Oscar nominations bounce at box office

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Oscar-nominated dramedy “Green Book” has turned Hollywood awards race publicity into more box-office gold than each of the seven other films in the best-picture contest.

The road-trip movie about race relations in the segregated U.S. South of the 1960s had collected more than $127.1 million at global box offices as of Monday, according to estimates released on Tuesday by website Box Office Mojo.

Nearly two-thirds of that sum – $82 million – came after Oscar nominations were announced on Jan. 22.

That topped the $55.8 million boost for 21st Century Fox Inc’s rock biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The story of late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury has grabbed a much larger total of $854.3 million, three-fourths of it outside the United States and Canada.

(For a graphic on box office performance by Oscar-nominated films, see: https://tmsnrt.rs/2TWZgg1)

Movie studios execute carefully crafted release strategies and marketing campaigns leading up to the Oscars, hoping the prestige of the nominations will draw audiences to theaters.

Comcast Corp’s Universal Pictures, for example, debuted “Green Book” in about 1,000 domestic theaters in November. That number had been slashed nearly in half just ahead of the announcement of this year’s Oscar contenders.

After the movie landed five Oscar nominations, Universal expanded the number of locations playing “Green Book” to more than 2,600 by early February.

Backers of “Green Book” also plowed $1.4 million into national television ads after the nominations through Monday, according to data measurement firm iSpot. That came in second among best-picture nominees to the $2.2 million to advertise “Vice,” a political satire from Annapurna Pictures.

The highest-grossing movie among the eight best-picture nominees is “Black Panther” from Walt Disney Co’s Marvel Studios. “Black Panther” was 2018’s second-highest grossing movie worldwide with $1.3 billion in global ticket sales. It left theaters long before Oscars season.

It is unclear how much the 10 nominations for Netflix Inc’s “Roma,” a foreign-language film about a Mexican housekeeper, boosted its audience. Netflix has declined to release ticket sales data for “Roma,” which has been playing in a more limited range of theaters since November and is currently in 74 U.S. locations.

Major U.S. theater chains refuse to show Netflix movies because the company refuses to wait the traditional three months before making its films available outside of theaters. “Roma” was released on Netflix’s streaming service in December.

The best-picture winner will be announced at the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday.

Tennessee junior guard Jordan Bone will enter the 2019 NBA Draft, while the Volunteers are still waiting for a decision from junior All-American Grant Williams, the team’s leading scorer and 2019 SEC Player of the Year.

In a video shared via social media Wednesday, Bone indicated he could still return and plans to use the process to measure his NBA readiness.

“I’m now blessed to have the opportunity to enter the 2019 NBA Draft and showcase my abilities for NBA personnel and receive valuable feedback that will help me to continue to develop,” Bone said. “I plan to make the most of this opportunity and use the experience and feedback to make the most informed decision about my basketball future. I am going to lean on my family as well as coach (Rick) Barnes and the staff here at Tennessee through these next steps.

“We are all in this together. I know I will have the support of Tennessee fans everywhere as we work through this process. Go Vols and God bless.”

Prospects must declare for the draft or return to college by May 29.

Williams and other prospects face an April 21 deadline to tentatively enter the draft process.

Bone averaged 13.5 points and 5.8 assists per game last season and was second-team All-SEC.

LONDON (Reuters) – U.S. buyout firm Lone Star has emerged as the frontrunner to buy the German building materials business of France’s Saint-Gobain in a deal valued at up to 400 million euros ($450 million), four sources familiar with the matter said.

Lone Star is using its Nordic building materials supplier Stark as an acquisition vehicle to purchase the unit, known as Raab Karcher, the sources said.

Stark was recently admitted to the second round of an auction process which kicked off in January, the sources said.

Private equity fund Platinum also made it to the final stages of the process, while U.S. rival Advent initially expressed interest but subsequently dropped out, they said.

The sources said Lone Star is ahead of Platinum as it has a more attractive business proposition due to the synergies it would extract by combining Stark and Raab Karcher.

The two funds are still carrying out due diligence ahead of a deadline for final offers in early May, the sources said, cautioning that no deal was certain.

Saint-Gobain and Lone Star declined to comment while Platinum was not immediately available.

The sale, led by Goldman Sachs, is expected to wrap up next month and could value the unit at between 300 million and 400 million euros, two of the sources said.

Raab Karcher has annual earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of about 40 million euros and is expected to fetch a multiple of no more than 10 times its EBITDA.

The unit reported revenues of almost 2 billion euros in 2017 but its margins are squeezed amid fears of a looming recession that could have a painful impact on building materials specialists.

Saint-Gobain put Raab Karcher on the block in November as part of a plan to sell non-core businesses with total revenues of 3 billion euros under a strategic overhaul overseen by new chief operating officer Benoit Bazin.

Trump displays Syria map detailing ISIS territory loss, vows terror network ‘will be gone by tonight’

President Trump on Wednesday brandished a striking map showing how the Islamic State’s presence in Syria has diminished since he took office, while vowing the deadly terrorist network will be gone “by tonight” as he showed reporters the tiny spot representing their last stand.

“I brought this out for you because, this is a map ... everything in the red -- this was on Election Night in 2016 -- everything red is ISIS,” he told reporters, pointing to a top image that showed large parts of the region covered in red.

“When I took it over, it was a mess. Now, on the bottom -- that's the exact same -- there is no red,” he said, pointing to an image below. “In fact, there's actually a tiny spot which will be gone by tonight,” he added.

“So this is ISIS on Election Day, my Election Day, and this is ISIS now,” he said. “So that's the way it goes.”

Trump announced in December that he intended to remove all 2,000 troops from Syria, declaring that ISIS was mostly defeated, but he was criticized by some within his party for being too hasty.

CHENEY CHALLENGES PENCE FACE-TO-FACE OVER TRUMP FOREIGN POLICY

Former Vice President Dick Cheney this month reportedly suggested that the decision was made during “the middle of a phone call” and that “we’re getting into a situation when our friends and allies around the world that we depend upon are going to lack confidence in us.”

“I worry that the bottom line of that kind of an approach is we have an administration that looks a lot more like Barack Obama than Ronald Reagan,” he said, according to The Washington Post.

With pressure from Republicans, Trump has shifted to agree to keep 400 troops in the country indefinitely.

“We're leaving 200 people there and 200 people in another place in Syria, closer to Israel, for a period of time,” he said Wednesday when asked if he had reversed his policy.

U.S.-backed fighters have been closing in on the ISIS-held village of Baghouz, the last remnants of what was once a territory the size of Indiana, with 8 million people under ISIS' rule. Now, they are down to a sliver of land no more than half a square mile.

Legally blind man helps Texas police officers during struggle with suspects, including one with gun

A Texas man may not have full sight, but that didn't keep him from seeing a law enforcement officer in need and lending a hand over the weekend.

The Fort Worth Police Department said the incident happened Saturday as officers Matthew Brazeal and David Woolbright were investigating a report of shots fired at a Wells Fargo bank.

As the officers attempted to detain the teenage suspects, the pair began fighting back. One of the suspects, who was armed, dropped his weapon to the ground during the "dangerous struggle."

"Now that a pistol is laying out, there's no telling who else is around or what’s going on,” Brazeal told FOX4. “He may try to pick it up and use it. We don't know.”

CALIFORNIA POLICE OFFICER SAVES BABY'S LIFE IN DRAMATIC BODYCAMERA VIDEO

That's when James Walker, 57, was leaving the bank with his service dog, Cassie, and ended up right next to the struggle where he heard "intense conversations."

"I really feel like it was a God thing,” he told FOX4. “I felt like God said, ‘Watch.’ So I stood there. I was obedient."

James Walker stepped in to help 2 officers who struggled to arrest 2 suspects over the weekend, including one who was armed.

Walker, who is legally blind now, went through police academy training and was a reserve officer for three years but never served because of his failing eyesight.

"I can see silhouettes,” Walker said Wednesday. “They didn't really need my help. They did an amazing job. But I wasn't going to walk away and let them get hurt.”

Walker then jumped into action, literally, getting on top of the 17-year-old boy and sitting on his back until an officer could get up and secure the weapon.

Fort Worth police, in a statement posted to Twitter, said, because of Walker’s help, no one was hurt.

“Mr. James Walker, you were able to show empathy and concern for everyone involved. Based on your experiences and awareness, you came to the aid of officers in need by tactically assisting in the arrest process,” police said in the statement. “Two officers went home safely to their loved ones thanks to your efforts on that day. Chinese Jet Shows Off US Tech

After months of complaints by the US administration that China is stealing intellectual property from companies in the United States, a picture of a Chinese fighter jet has been publicized on social media featuring key technology systems developed for the American F-35.

Critics have previously noted that the Chengdu J-20 is all but a mirror copy of Lockheed Martin’s F-22, an air superiority aircraft that is no longer in production. According to a report by the Washington Times, an anonymous user recently posted new images of the J-20 on Chinese military websites showing two key technologies that have long been touted as unique features of US fighter aircraft.

Alex Jones exposes the left’s obsession with domination over those they disagree with.

One of the technologies that apparently originated in the United States was the Distributed Aperture System (DAS), which is supposed to be one of the F-35’s most important sensors (the aircraft itself is often colloquially described as a flying computer). DAS has been billed by advocates as a revolutionary capability allowing a pilot to see exactly what’s going on 360 degrees around the aircraft — all but eliminating blind spots.

If you’ve ever read a report saying that the F-35 helmet lets the pilot see through the bottom of the aircraft, that functionality is made possible by DAS, Defense News notes. If the latest images suggest anything, now the Chengdu J-20 has a comparable DAS functionality as well.

“The camera lens with a relatively large optical aperture in the nose comes with a reddish-purple plating/coasting,” says the posting on the China-based Chaoji Da Benying website, as reported by the Washington Times. The post, which included four pictures of the J-20 with what looks like a fresh coat of paint, noted that “it very much resembles the F-35’s AN/AAQ-3 7 DAS.”

The F-35’s DAS, however, has been one of the driving factors behind why the jet has a low availability rate to conduct missions, Breaking Defense reported in June 2018.

In an attempt to keep costs down on the DAS component of the F-35 project, prime F-35 contractor Lockheed Martin ditched its arrangement with Northrop Grumman — formerly the main subcontractor on the DAS component — and asked whether the rest of the defense contracting industry could do the job better and cheaper than Northrop. Raytheon became the new subcontractor for the DAS system, effectively swiping away all of Northrop’s business on that part of the F-35 project.

“It’s a major upset,” Richard Aboulafia of the Teal Group told Breaking Defense last June, adding that “from a revenue standpoint, F-35 remains almost the only game in town.”

“Major component changes like these are extremely rare, particularly at this stage of a procurement program.” The reliability rate of DAS was abysmal when Northrop was the main subcontractor; Lockheed announced that shifting contract execution to Raytheon’s DAS from Northrop’s would make the system five times more reliable.

“The DAS win will be worth billions of dollars across the lifetime of the F-35 program. The shift in supplies is part of a broader push by Lockheed Martin to wring costs out of the program,” said defense analyst Loren Thompson in comments to Breaking Defense last year.

The Washington Times report added that a second technology used by US aircraft, the Universal Water Activated Release System (UWARS), is also featured prominently on the photo of the J-20. UWARS helps automatically eject pilots from the jets if they hit seawater. “Getting our wish fulfilled… The improved details show that our J-20 is finally going to reveal its majesty on the open sea,” the anonymous Chinese poster said.

It’s not clear whether either of the technologies has been stolen from US government agencies or US defense contractors. US officials insist China has been stealing American technology for decades.

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

A Baha’i advocacy group has expressed concerns over the fate of minority Baha’is at the hands of Yemen’s Houthi rebels ahead of the appeals hearing for one of the community leaders sentenced to death.

The Baha’i International Community said in a statement Friday that the hearing for Hamed bin Haydara, detained in 2013 and sentenced to death last year on espionage and apostasy charges, is due on Tuesday.

The statement quotes Bani Dugal, the Baha’i community representative at the United Nations, as saying the prosecution hasn’t addressed Haydara’s appeal but is instead making “absurd, wide-ranging accusations.”

International rights groups have decried the prosecution of Yemeni Baha’is by the Iran-backed Houthis.

KABUL (Reuters) – Afghan President Ashraf Ghani encouraged newly-elected lawmakers to participate in the peace process with the Taliban as he opened on Friday the first session of parliament since a controversial election.

Ghani has invited thousands of politicians, religious scholars and rights activists to an assembly known as a loya jirga next week to discuss ways to end the 17-year war.

Several opposition leaders have said they will boycott the four-day assembly in Kabul, saying it was pulled together without their input and is being used by Ghani as he seeks a second term in a September presidential election.

“We have presented the peace plan on a regular basis and we are committed to it,” Ghani said in the first session since parliamentary elections marred by technical problems, militant attacks and accusations of voting fraud last year.

“Based on this plan, there will be no peace deal and negotiation that does not have the green card of the parliament,” he added.

Officials from the United States and the Taliban have held several rounds of talks to end the Afghan war.

U.S. negotiator, Zalmay Khalilzad, has reported some progress toward an accord on a U.S. troop withdrawal and on how the Taliban would prevent extremists from using Afghanistan to launch attacks as al Qaeda did on Sept. 11, 2001.

The insurgents have so far rejected U.S. demands for a ceasefire and talks on the country’s political future that would include Afghan government officials.

The loya jirga, a centuries-old institution used to build consensus among competing tribes, factions and ethnic groups, is an attempt by Ghani to influence the peace talks and cement his position for a second term, Afghan politicians and Western diplomats say.

Amid growing political divisions in Kabul, opposition politicians have demanded that Ghani step down when his mandate ends next month, and give way to an interim government to oversee peace talks with the Taliban. Ghani has ruled that out.

The country’s top court said last week Ghani can stay in office until the presidential election in September.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein Thursday defended special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation while slamming former President Barack Obama’s administration for being slow to take action on Russian interference in U.S. elections and ex-FBI Director James Comey for telling Congress the agency was investigating collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

“Our nation is safer, elections are more secure, and citizens are better informed about covert foreign influence schemes,” Rosenstein said in a speech to the Armenian Bar Association, marking his first public remarks after the Mueller report was released, reports CBS News.

He also pointed out that the investigation revealed a pattern of computer hacking and the use of social media to undermine elections as “only the tip of the iceberg of a comprehensive Russian strategy to influence elections, promote social discord, and undermine America, just like they do in many other countries,” reports The Wall Street Journal.

The Obama administration also made “critical decisions,” including choosing not to publicize the full story about Russian hackers and social media trolling, “and how they relate to a broader strategy to undermine America,” said Rosenstein.

He noted that the Mueller probe began after Comey disclosed during a hearing before Congress that President Donald Trump “pressured him to close the investigation and the president denied that the conversation occurred.”

Rosenstein said two years ago, when he was confirmed, he was told by a Republican senator that he would be in charge of the probe and that he’d report the results to the American people.

However, he said he didn’t promise to do that, because it is “not our job to render conclusive factual findings. We just decide whether it is appropriate to file criminal charges.”

BEIJING (Reuters) – Britain must get to the bottom of the leak of confidential discussions during a top-level security meeting about the role of China’s Huawei Technologies in 5G network supply chains, British finance minister Philip Hammond said on Friday.

News that Britain’s National Security Council, attended by senior ministers and spy chiefs, had agreed on Tuesday to bar Huawei from all core parts of the country’s 5G network and restrict its access to non-core elements was leaked to a national newspaper.

The leak of secret discussions has sparked anger in parliament and amongst Britain’s intelligence community. Britain’s most senior civil servant Mark Sedwill has launched an inquiry and written to ministers who were at the meeting.

“My understanding from London (is) that an investigation has been announced into apparent leaks from the NSC meeting earlier this week,” said Hammond, speaking on the sidelines of a summit on China’s Belt and Road initiative in Beijing.

“To my knowledge there has never been a leak from a National Security Council meeting before and therefore I think it is very important that we get to the bottom of what happened here,” he told Reuters in a pooled interview.

British culture minister Jeremy Wright said on Thursday he could not rule out a criminal investigation. The majority of the ministers at the NSC meeting have said they were not involved, according to media reports.

Hammond said he was unaware of any previous leak from a meeting of the NSC.

“It’s not about the substance of what was apparently leaked. It’s not earth-shattering information. But it is important that we protect the principle that nothing that goes on in national security council meetings must ever be repeated outside the room.”

Allowing Huawei a reduced role in building its 5G network puts Britain at odds with the United States which has told allies not to use its technology at all because of fears it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying. Huawei has categorically denied this.

There have been concerns that the NSC’s conclusion, which sources confirmed to Reuters, could upset other allies in the world’s leading intelligence-sharing network – the Five Eyes alliance of the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

However, British ministers and intelligence officials have said any final decision on 5G would not put critical national infrastructure at risk. Ciaran Martin, head of the cyber center of Britain’s main eavesdropping agency, GCHQ, played down any threat of a rift in the Five Eyes alliance.
