Washington asks Russia: Where’s your proof ex-U.S. marine is a spy?

By Andrew Osborn

MOSCOW (Reuters) – The United States on Friday asked why Russia had not provided any evidence to back up its accusation that Paul Whelan, a detained former U.S. marine, was a spy, a day after Whelan alleged he was being mistreated by a “kangaroo court.”

Whelan, who holds U.S., British, Canadian and Irish passports, was detained in a Moscow hotel room on Dec. 28 and accused of espionage, a charge he denies. If found guilty, he could be imprisoned for up to 20 years.

The case has further strained already poor U.S.-Russia relations as has that of another detained American, private equity chief Michael Calvey, who is being investigated on embezzlement charges.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) detained Whelan after an acquaintance handed him a flash drive containing classified information. Whelan’s lawyer says his client thinks he was set up by the acquaintance and the FSB.

Whelan thought the flash drive contained holiday photos, the lawyer has said.

The U.S. Embassy in Russia on Friday complained about Moscow’s handling of the case.

“Shortly after U.S. citizen Paul Whelan was arrested in Moscow, Russian officials said they caught him red-handed,” Andrea Kalan, an embassy spokeswoman, wrote on social media.

“It’s been more than two months now, and we haven’t seen a shred of evidence implicating Paul Whelan. Why haven’t they produced it?”

U.S. diplomats were due to visit Whelan at Moscow’s Lefortovo Prison on Friday.

Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed the U.S. criticism.

“Two months and the embassy is already getting hysterical,” RIA news agency cited Maria Zakharova, a ministry spokeswoman, as saying.

“Law enforcement agencies are working on the case, the guy was caught red-handed, and that was announced openly. I don’t see any grounds for American diplomats to get worked up.”

In a court appearance on Thursday at which his lawyer’s request to free him from pre-trial detention on bail was refused, Whelan appeared angry and said he had been told that he was not allowed to communicate with anyone.

“Of course they are,” he said, when asked by a reporter whether Russian authorities were trying to isolate him.

Whelan at one point complained he hadn’t been provided with a translator and was therefore unable to understand what was being said in court.

“This is basically a kangaroo court,” said Whelan after learning that his latest request for bail had been rebuffed.

He is due to be kept in pre-trial detention until May 28 while investigators continue to look into his case.

NHL roundup: Lightning reach 60 wins

April 2, 2019

Yanni Gourde and Nikita Kucherov each had three points as the Tampa Bay Lightning cracked the 60-win plateau with a 5-2 road victory over the Ottawa Senators on Monday.

The Lightning became just the third team in NHL history to win 60 games in a season, following the 1995-96 Red Wings’ 62 wins and 1976-77 Canadiens’ 60 wins in the pre-overtime era. With three games remaining on the schedule, Tampa Bay (60-15-4, 124 points) still has a chance of breaking Detroit’s record.

Gourde collected an assist and scored twice for his first multi-goal outing of the season. Kucherov notched three assists, marking the 18th time in what could be an MVP season that the forward has had at least three points in a single game. And Steven Stamkos scored late in the third period to give the star center 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in his past nine games.

Ottawa got goals from Brady Tkachuk and Max Veronneau. Craig Anderson gave up five goals on 26 shots in his 400th appearance for the Senators.

Maple Leafs 2, Islanders 1

John Tavares scored against his former team in the third period and Toronto clinched a playoff berth with a close win in Uniondale, N.Y.

Defenseman Calle Rosen scored his first career NHL goal and Frederik Andersen made 28 saves for the Maple Leafs, who averted a season sweep by New York and moved within four points of second-place Boston in the Atlantic Division.

Jordan Eberle scored to extend his goal-scoring streak to three games for the Islanders, who fell for the second time in six contests to remain just two points ahead of third-place Pittsburgh in the Metropolitan Division.

Panthers 5, Capitals 3

Roberto Luongo — three days short of his 40th birthday — made 27 saves, and host Florida held on in a wild finish to defeat Washington.

The Capitals scored three goals — by Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nicklas Backstrom and Jakub Vrana — in the final 10 minutes to cut into what had been a 4-0 deficit.

Vrana scored with 2:21 left to make it 4-3, and the Capitals then pulled rookie backup goalie Pheonix Copley for an extra attacker. However, Florida escaped when Vincent Trocheck scored an empty-net goal with 27 seconds left, his second tally of the night.

Blues 3, Avalanche 2 (SO)

Jordan Binnington had 24 saves through overtime and three more in a shootout, and Ryan O’Reilly scored the shootout winner against his former team as St. Louis beat visiting Colorado to complete a sweep of the four-game season series.

The win moved St. Louis into a tie with Nashville for second place in the Central Division, with the Blues holding the first tiebreaker with three games remaining for both teams.

Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and an assist, Alexander Kerfoot also had a goal, and Philipp Grubauer had 25 saves for the Avalanche, who earned a valuable point to increase their lead over Arizona to two points for the final wild-card spot in the West. Both teams have three games remaining.

Jets 4, Blackhawks 3 (OT)

Jack Roslovic scored twice, and Kevin Hayes tallied the overtime winner as Winnipeg claimed a road victory over Chicago that restored the Jets’ lead for the top spot in the Central Division.

Goalie Connor Hellebuyck made 25 saves for the Jets, who snapped a three-game losing skid. Winnipeg is two points ahead of the St. Louis Blues and Nashville Predators for first place in the Central. All three teams have three games remaining in the regular season.

The Blackhawks remained mathematically alive by forcing overtime in a crazy game that saw a Jets goal overturned with three minutes left in regulation and Dylan Strome force the extra frame with his 19th goal with 2:20 left in the third.

Flames 7, Kings 2

Derek Ryan scored twice while Mark Jankowski netted one goal and two assists as visiting Calgary leaned on some of its more unusual suspects one night after securing top spot in the Western Conference and still throttled Los Angeles.

The Flames sat out their top four defensemen — Mark Giordano, TJ Brodie, Travis Hamonic and Noah Hanifin — as well as second-line forwards Mikael Backlund and Matthew Tkachuk, yet goalie David Rittich needed to make just 23 saves. Calgary has won three straight and nine of its past 12.

Ryan and Sam Bennett — who left the game after taking a late and high hit from Kurtis MacDermid in the second period — traded first-period goals with Kyle Clifford and Dustin Brown, who was honored prior to the game for becoming the Kings franchise leader in games played last week. Anze Kopitar assisted Brown’s goal in his 1,000th NHL game for Los Angeles.

Devils 4, Rangers 2

Connor Carrick scored with 4:10 left in the third period for host New Jersey, which outlasted New York in Newark, N.J.

The deciding goal was set up by an impressive individual effort by Drew Stafford, who briefly lost control of the puck in the neutral zone but got it back by reaching back and stealing it from Rangers center Vladislav Namestnikov. Stafford then raced up the ice and deked as if he was going to shoot before passing into the slot to Carrick, who fired a shot into the far end of the net.

Joey Anderson iced the victory with an empty-netter with 1:09 left for the Devils, who received first-period goals from Miles Wood and Travis Zajac in winning their home finale. New Jersey finished 20-14-7 at home. Brett Howden scored in the first period and Filip Chytil added the game-tying goal in the second period for the Rangers.

Golden Knights 3, Oilers 1

Jonathan Marchessault scored what proved to be the winning goal on a breakaway in the second period, and Malcolm Subban finished with 18 saves as host Vegas ended a team-record, five-game losing streak with a victory over Edmonton.

Cody Eakin and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare also scored goals for Vegas, which already had clinched third place in the Pacific Division and a first-round Stanley Cup playoff matchup with the San Jose Sharks. Subban, playing in his ninth consecutive game, improved to 14-2-1 all-time at T-Mobile Arena.

Edmonton’s Connor McDavid tied his career high with his 41st goal. The Oilers were officially eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoff race during the game when Avalanche picked up a point in their shootout loss at St. Louis.

Germany’s Verdi union opposes Deutsche-Commerzbank merger

March 12, 2019

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – Germany’s Verdi labor union on Tuesday voiced strong objections to a possible merger between Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank, arguing that a combined entity would be a more attractive target for a hostile foreign takeover.

The union, in a statement e-mailed to Reuters, also said that Deutsche’s biggest problem, its investment bank, wouldn’t be helped by a tie-up with Commerzbank. A merger would put at least 10,000 jobs at risk, it added.

The reaction from the union follows news over the weekend that Deutsche Bank’s chief executive Christian Sewing had agreed to hold tentative talks with rival Commerzbank.

Berlin, which has been worried about Deutsche’s health, has pushed for a merger as Deutsche has struggled to generate sustainable profits since the 2008 financial crisis.

“We reject a merger,” said Jan Duscheck, head of Verdi’s banking division.

It wouldn’t create a truly big bank in the European market, and the new entity would be “considerably more attractive for a hostile takeover, for example, by France,” he said.

“The merger would not result in a ‘national champion’,” he added.

Both banks declined to comment.

Alveda King: ‘Delighted’ Trump Restricted Funding to Planned Parenthood, Founded by ‘KKK Adviser’ Margaret Sanger

Spread the love

Dr. Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., recalled Margaret Sanger’s — founder of Planned Parenthood — racist and eugenicist politics in a Friday interview on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Tonight with host Rebecca Mansour and special guest host Rick Manning.

Manning and Mansour asked King to address the Trump administration’s Friday issuance of a rule regarding federal taxpayer funding of family planning. The new rule, issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), could block about $60 million of federal government funding for Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers.

“I was absolutely delighted, because now the regulations are being addressed and we are really seeing clearly where some of the money that Planned Parenthood gets from our tax dollars comes from,” remarked King.

King noted, “[Planned Parenthood] gets over half a billion dollars a year, and several million dollars a day in tax dollars. Some of that money does come out of Title X. So you have several million women who are served by organizations that are funded through Title X, Planned Parenthood getting a lion’s share of that.”

King added, “So what we in the pro-life movement have been saying for a long time — especially in the African-American community — we said, ‘Okay, they don’t use their Title X money specifically to do abortions, but they pay for many of the other things that they’re doing, and that leaves some of their other funding streams available to do the abortions.’”

King continued, “So we knew there had to be some sort of regulation there to go ahead and fund those dollars to organizations that do not perform abortions, but give all of the other services like health screenings, opportunities being directed to other female health services, or to provide some of those services themselves without doing abortions on site, and that includes not just the surgical abortions, but the chemical and the medical abortions, as well.”

King went on, “If you take away those tax dollars from those organizations that also provide abortions on-site, even referrals for abortions under certain circumstances, if they’re pressuring the women to get those referrals and get those abortions, that’s going to prove to be a problem, as well.”

King anticipated Planned Parenthood’s opposition to the aforementioned HHS directive.

“Planned Parenthood will try to fight it, and that’s why need the court of public opinion to kick in,” stated King. “They need to hear from the communities that understand what they have been doing. They’re using our tax dollars to take care of their business and still provide those abortions. So we have to begin to blow that whistle to expose this. I think that the American community need to hear from folks who do not agree who are paying money to abortion providers with tax dollars.”

King declared, “Abortion is a crime against humanity, because the little baby in the womb is a human being. We know now from New York and Virginia with those measures that they were trying to do to even say — well, New York actually passed it and Virginia was on the way to passing it until the big scandal came with the governor — so even when the baby is born, if the intent was to abort the baby, then you keep the baby comfortable, and go ahead and let the baby die or help the baby die once the baby is born. So that is a crime against humanity.”

King said, “Abortion takes the life of a human being, and it is proven that that is a human being; a human by-product. Science proves it, philosophy agrees, and certainly religion has been saying that a long time.”

“If we can begin to connect those dots between abortion providers and tax dollars, then we’re going to be able to give those services to organizations that do not abort children,” predicted King.

Mansour noted the racist, eugenicist vision of Margaret Sanger, Planned Parenthood’s founder.

King said, “[Margaret Sanger] thought about the unfit, that included Negroes, as we were called at the time. The unfit, those who maybe had physical disability or some mental disability, or things like that. She wanted to erase all of that out of the human population, and her plan was — first, before abortion became legal — to have birth control measures, and the negro project, tying women’s tubes and giving men vasectomies; free tubal ligations and free vasectomies in the negro community.”

King added, “People just don’t know [Margaret Sanger] was doing all that. She was also an adviser to the Ku Klux Klan. A lot of people don’t know that.”

Roe v. Wade, scheduled for release in the fall of 2019. Its cast include Stacey Dash, Robert Davi, Jaime Kennedy, and Jon Voight.

“So with all of those things going on with Planned Parenthood, I’m the executive producer of a new movie called Roe v. Wade,” said King. “It highlights the life of Dr. Mildred Fay Jefferson, the first black woman to graduate from Harvard School of Medicine [and] helped to found the National Right to Life.”

King added, “Dr. Bernard Nathanson who was an abortion provider — very notorious — had an epiphany. He woke up, had a spiritual experience, and stopped doing abortions. [Roe v. Wade] tells how that horrible deal, a very bad deal, became law. It’s coming out in the fall.”

The cast of the movie Roe v. Wade includes Stacey Dash, Robert Davi, Jaime Kennedy, and Jon Voight.

The Latest: Pediatrician gets 79 years for assaults on kids

The Latest on pediatrician's sentencing for sexually assaulting 31 children (all times local):

12:40 p.m.

A former Pennsylvania pediatrician has been sentenced to at least 79 years in prison for sexually assaulting 31 children, most of them patients.

Dr. Johnnie Barto of Johnstown was sentenced Monday on dozens of counts, including aggravated indecent assault and child endangerment. Prosecutors say the 71-year-old spent decades abusing children in the exam room at his pediatric practice and at local hospitals.

Nineteen people gave victim impact statements both in person and through a prosecutor ahead of the sentencing. They described how he destroyed their lives, caused them to feel hopelessness and made them fear doctors.

His wife, Linda Barto, was among them. She says he "spent his whole sinister life lying and sneaking around so he could carry on his abuse uninterrupted."

The attorney general's office had asked for 31 to 62 years in prison.

Barto appeared before the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine nearly two decades ago on administrative charges that he molested two young girls. But regulators threw out the case and allowed him to keep practicing medicine. Prosecutors say the 71-year-old doctor went on to molest at least a dozen more young patients before his arrest in January 2018.

Barto has pleaded guilty to some counts and no contest to others. He's been jailed pending sentencing.

BERLIN (Reuters) – The British Ministry of Defence is in close touch with U.S. officials and reviewing the status of its 17 F-35B fighter jets after the crash of a Japanese F-35 jet in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, a ministry spokesperson said.

“Safety is of the utmost importance and very closely managed on the F-35 program. We will continue to review the situation as further information becomes available,” the spokesperson said.

Britain, which plans to buy a total of 138 F-35 fighter jets built by Lockheed Martin, declared its fleet of F-35B fighter jets ready for initial combat operations from land in January.

MONTREAL/OTTAWA (Reuters) – Rising waters were prompting further evacuations in central Canada on Thursday, with the mayor of the country’s capital, Ottawa, declaring a state of emergency and Quebec authorities warning that a hydroelectric dam was at risk of breaking.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson declared the emergency in response to rising water levels along the Ottawa River and weather forecasts that called for significant rainfall on Friday.

In a statement on Twitter, Watson asked for help from the Ontario provincial government and the country’s military.

He warned that “flood levels are currently forecasted to exceed the levels that caused significant damage to numerous properties in the city of Ottawa in 2017.”

Spring flooding had killed one person and forced more than 900 people from their homes in Canada’s Quebec province as of 1 p.m. on Thursday, according to a government website.

Ottawa has received 80 requests for service related to potential flooding such as sandbagging, a city spokeswoman said.

The prospect of more rain over the next 24 to 48 hours triggered concerns on Thursday that the hydroelectric dam at Bell Falls in the western part of Quebec could be at risk of failing because of rising water levels.

Quebec’s provincial police said 250 people were protectively removed from homes in the area as of late afternoon in case the dam on the Rouge River breaks.

The dam is now at its full flow capacity of 980 cubic meters per second of water, said Francis Labbé, a spokesman for the province’s state-owned utility, Hydro Quebec. He said Hydro Quebec expected the flow could rise to 1,200 cubic meters per second of water over the next two days.

“We have to take the worst-case scenario into consideration, since we`re already at the maximum capacity,” Labbé said by phone.

The dam is part of a power station that no longer produces electricity, but is regularly inspected by Hydro Quebec, he said.

BELFAST (Reuters) – Detectives investigating the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Northern Ireland last week suspect the gunman who shot her dead is in his late teens as they made a further appeal to the local community who they believe know his identity.

McKee’s killing by an Irish nationalist militant during a riot in Londonderry has sparked outrage in the province where a 1998 peace deal mostly ended three decades of sectarian violence that cost the lives of some 3,600 people.

The New IRA, one of a small number of groups that oppose the peace accord, has said one of its members shot the 29-year-old reporter dead in the Creggan area of the city on Thursday when opening fire on police during a riot McKee was watching.

The killing, which followed a large car bomb in Londonderry in January that police also blamed on the New IRA, has raised fears that small marginalized militant groups are exploiting a political vacuum in the province and tensions caused by Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

Police released footage on Friday of immediately before and after the shooting showing three men who were involved in the rioting and identified one as the gunman who they believe is in his late teens.

“I believe that the information that can help us to bring those responsible for her murder to justice lies within the community. I need the public to tell me who he is,” Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy told reporters.

Murphy said those involved in the disorder on the night were teenagers or in their early 20s, and that about 100 people were on the ground watching the trouble as it unfolded.

He added that police believed the gun used in the attack was of a similar caliber to those used before in paramilitary type attacks in Creggan.

“I recognize that people living in Creagan may find it’s difficult to come forward to speak to police. Today, I want to provide a personal reassurance that we are able to deal with those issues sensitively,” Murphy said, echoing similar appeals in recent days.

(Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures were flat on Friday, as investors paused ahead of GDP data, which is expected to show the world’s largest economy maintained a moderate pace of growth in the first quarter.

Gross domestic product probably increased at a 2% annualized rate in the quarter as a burst in exports, strong inventory stockpiling and government investment in public construction projects offset a slowdown in consumer and business spending, according to a Reuters survey of economists.

The Commerce Department report will be published at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The GDP data comes as investors look for fresh catalysts to push the markets higher. The S&P 500 index is about 0.5% below its record high hit in late September, after surging nearly 17% this year.

First-quarter earnings have been largely upbeat, with nearly 78% of the 178 companies that have reported so far surpassing earnings estimates, according to Refinitiv data.

Wall Street now expects S&P 500 earnings to be in line with the year-ago quarter, a sharp improvement from the 2.3% fall expected at the start of April.

Amazon.com Inc rose 0.9% in premarket trading after the e-commerce giant reported quarterly profit that doubled and beat estimates on soaring demand for its cloud and ad services.

Ford Motor Co shares surged 8.5% after the automaker posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings largely due to strong pickup truck sales in its core U.S. market.

Mattel Inc jumped 8% after the toymaker beat analysts’ estimates for quarterly revenue, as a more diverse range of Barbie dolls powered sales in the United States.

At 6:52 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 35 points, or 0.13%. S&P 500 e-minis were down 1.5 points, or 0.05% and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 10.75 points, or 0.14%.

Among decliners, Intel Corp slumped 7.7% after it cut its full-year revenue forecast and missed quarterly sales estimate for its key data center business.

Rival Advanced Micro Devices declined 0.8%.

Oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp are expected to report results later in the day.

WARSAW (Reuters) – Germany could owe Poland more than $850 billion in reparations for damages it incurred during World War Two and the brutal Nazi occupation, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Germany, one of Poland’s biggest trade partners and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO, says all financial claims linked to World War Two have been settled.

The right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) has revived calls for compensation since it took power in 2015 and has made the promotion of Poland’s wartime victimhood a central plank of its appeal to nationalism.

PiS has yet to make an official demand for reparations but its combative stance towards Germany has strained relations.

“Poland lost not only millions of its citizens but it was also destroyed in an unusually brutal way,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who heads the Polish parliamentary committee on reparations, told Reuters in an interview.

“Many (victims) are still alive and feel deeply wronged.”

His comments come a month before European Parliament elections in which populist and nationalist parties are expected to do well. Poland will also hold national elections later this year, with PiS still well ahead of its rivals in opinion polls.

EU LARGESSE

Mularczyk said the reparations figure could amount to more than 10 times the estimated 100 billion euros ($111 billion) that Poland has received so far in European Union funds since it joined the bloc in 2004.

Germany is the biggest net donor to the EU budget and some Germans regard its contributions as generous compensation to recipient countries like Poland which suffered under Nazi rule.

In 1953 Poland’s then-communist rulers relinquished all claims to war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to free East Germany, also a Soviet satellite, from any liabilities. PiS says that agreement is invalid because Poland was unable to negotiate fair compensation.

Mularczyk said his committee hoped to complete its report on the reparations issue by Sept. 1, the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s invasion.

Accusing Berlin of playing “diplomatic games” over the issue, he said: “The matter is being swept under the rug (by Germany) … until it’ll be wiped from the memory, from people’s awareness.”

His comments come after the Greek parliament voted this month to seek billions of euros in German reparations for the Nazi occupation of their country.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States did not pay any money to North Korea as it sought the release of comatose American student Otto Warmbier.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump had approved payment of a $2 million bill from North Korea to cover its care of the college student, who died shortly after he was returned to the United States after 17 months in a North Korean prison.
