Two weeks before India starts voting, Modi predicts easy victory

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday his ruling coalition would increase its majority in India’s upcoming election, despite some independent analysts suggesting it could disappear due to discontent over lack of jobs and depressed farm incomes.

Involving around 900 million voters, India’s general election will be the world’s largest democratic exercise, with the vote taking place in seven phases between April 11 and May 19.

Results will be announced on May 23, and in an interview with Republic Bharat television channel, Modi predicted an easy victory.

“The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance partners will get more seats than the previous election,” Modi said.

In 2014, Modi led his Hindu nationalist BJP and its allies to the biggest majority scored by any political group in nearly 30 years, as a Congress Party led government paid the price for a faltering economy.

During Modi’s tenure the economy has gathered strength, but growth has been uneven, leaving large sections of the population unhappy.

Though his approval ratings still trail Modi’s, rival Rahul Gandhi has worked hard to revive Congress and forge partnerships with regional parties.

Up until a few weeks ago most opinion polls were expecting a close run race, but over the past month, Modi’s BJP has benefited from nationalist fervor unleashed by a flare up in tensions with neighboring Pakistan.

Modi dismissed Gandhi’s chances this time round, predicting the opposition would have to wait another five years to mount a serious challenge.

“The ‘Modi vs who’ question could arise in 2024, but in 2019 the citizens have made up their mind and are not looking for anyone else.”

As yet, no major survey has emerged measuring the impact on voter intentions from the upsurge in tensions with Pakistan.

The Indian opposition accuses Modi of using national security to score political points, especially after he addressed the nation on Wednesday to announce that India made a space breakthrough by shooting down one of its satellites in space using an anti-satellite missile.

During the interview, Modi again swiped Pakistan over a

militant attack that killed 40 Indian paramilitary police last month in the disputed Kashmir region.

The Indian prime minister said he would not enter talks with Islamabad until “the world sees that Pakistan has taken action against terrorism.”

Pakistan has denied any role in the attack and has said it is ready to hold talks with India to address the core issue of Kashmir.

New Zealand massacre suspect made stops in North Korea, Pakistan during global travels, reports say

The man suspected of live-streaming himself kill 49 people and wounding dozens more in a Friday shooting spree at two New Zealand mosques plunged himself into white nationalist message boards after global travels that included stops in North Korea and Pakistan, according to reports.

The 28-year-old Australian national, whom Fox News is not naming, made his backpacking trips solo, but also participated in travel groups. Australian media outlets published a photo showing him with a group tour near the Samjiyon Grand Monument in North Korea. The lengthy manifesto that he reportedly shared prior to the killings in Christchurch also alludes to visits to France, Poland, Iceland, Argentina and Ukraine.

The alleged killer grew up in New South Wales, Australia, and worked as a personal trainer with a penchant for competing in triathlons. Within a year of his father’s death in 2010, he quit his job, invested in cryptocurrency and began traveling the world using his inheritance and money from bitcoin investments, the New York Times reported.

NEW ZEALAND COMMUNITY RUSHES TO AID MOSQUE SHOOTING VICTIMS AMID GUNFIRE, REPORTS SAY

“Recently came into contact with a bit of capital due to the passing away of my father,” he posted on a forum in 2011.

It is believed he traveled to New Zealand before moving on to Southeast Asia, China, North Korea, India, Pakistan and Europe -- where he made stops in Spain, France and Portugal, News.AU.com reported. Photos posted to message boards show him in Pakistan as recently as last year.

“He had no specific destination,” Tracey Gray, his former boss at a local gym, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. “It was my understanding he was open to see the world, to see as many places as possible. He just wanted to experience different experiences.”

The suspected killer – who allegedly live-streamed the massacre on Facebook, which subsequently removed the footage and closed his account -- appeared in a New Zealand court Saturday, flanked by 11 security guards, the Times reported. He is charged with one count of murder but is expected to face more charges as the investigation continues.

Authorities said the suspect had been planning the attack for up to two years and had decided to shoot up the Masjid Al Noor mosque in central Christchurch and the Linwood Masjid mosque three miles away two months ago, according to the Times.

Trump says he won’t discuss pardons ‘right now’ when asked his plans on Flynn

President Trump, in an exclusive interview with Fox News' "Hannity" Wednesday night, avoided giving an outright answer when asked if he planned to pardon General Michael Flynn, who was charged in the special counsel’s Russia investigation.

When host Sean Hannity asked if Trump would consider a pardon for Flynn, who served as Trump’s national security adviser for less than a month before resigning, the president responded: “I don’t want to talk about pardons now.”

TRUMP CALLS SCHIFF A 'DISGRACE' FOR PUSHING COLLUSION AGENDA, SAYS DEM MAY HAVE BROKEN LAW

“When you mention General Flynn, he was a man who had an incredible record in the military,” Trump told Hannity. “You see what happened to him. The FBI said he wasn’t lying, as I understand it, and the Mueller group said he was lying.

“And you know what he’s gone through, and what so many others have gone through,” Trump continued. “I could name names that would just go on for your entire show. It’s a very, very sad thing. I don’t want to talk about pardons now. But I can say, it’s so sad on so many levels.”

Boy Scouts ‘perversion files’ list 7,800 suspected pedophiles: attorney

Confidential files on suspected pedophiles maintained by the Boy Scouts of America contain the names of 7,800 individuals, an attorney for child sex abuse victims said Tuesday.

The organization’s so-called “perversion files” have been previously disclosed through litigation but the number of alleged abusers had not been known, attorney Jeff Anderson, who represents former scouts who say they were sexually abused, said Tuesday.

Anderson said a child abuse expert hired by the Scouts revealed the staggering number during testimony in a lawsuit in January.

“The alarming thing about this is not just the number but the fact is that the Boy Scouts of America has never actually released these names in any form that can be known to the public,” he said at a Manhattan news conference.

Anderson said the files also contain the names of more than 12,000 suspected victims, according to the Scouts' expert.

Attorney Jeff Anderson said Tuesday that the Boy Scouts of America in "perversion files" contain the names of 7,800 suspected pedophiles.

The files date from 1959 to 1985, according to reports from several years ago.

Anderson said those on the list may have been removed from scouting, but would not have faced consequences or prohibitions outside the scouts precluding them from holding jobs or volunteer roles around young people.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA CONSIDERING FILING FOR BANKRUPTCY, REPORTS SAY

Anderson announced Tuesday he was releasing the names of 130 men from New York and 50 from New Jersey who were identified in the files.

In a statement to Fox News on Tuesday, the Boy Scouts of America said: “We care deeply about all victims of child abuse and sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed during their time in Scouting.”

"Throughout our history, we have enacted strong youth protection policies to prevent future abuse, including mandatory youth protection trainings and a formal leader-selection process that includes criminal background checks," the statement said. "Since the 1920s, we have maintained a Volunteer Screening Database to prevent individuals accused of abuse or inappropriate conduct from joining or re-entering our programs, a practice recommended in 2007 by the Centers for Disease Control for all youth-serving organizations."

The statement concluded by saying “at no time have we ever knowingly allowed a perpetrator to work with youth, and we mandate that all leaders, volunteers and staff members nationwide immediately report any abuse allegation to law enforcement.”

Sec. Nielsen: Need Legislation for Border’s ‘Root Causes’

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is asking Congress for legislation to address the "root causes of the emergency" at the nation's border, according to a copy of a letter to Congress obtained by NBC News.

In the letter, Nielsen said she'll be seeking a legislative proposal that will allow for the authority to hold families who are seeking asylum in detention until their cases are decided, allow for quicker deportation of unaccompanied migrant children, and to allow immigrants to apply for asylum from their home countries.

"We are grappling with a humanitarian and security catastrophe that is worsening by the day," said Nielsen in the letter. "The Department has run out of capacity despite extraordinary intra-Departmental and interagency efforts."

However, a legislative proposal would first have to get through the Democrat-controlled House, where it likely will be opposed, notes NBC.

Meanwhile, daily border crossings are at a 13-year high and immigrants are being released from custody, leaving many seeking asylum to wait without shelter.

"What we are seeing is nearly unprecedented in the modern era," said Nielsen, explaining that the series of caravans arriving at the border are bringing in hundreds of migrants at a time.

Nielsen said in her letter that a law limiting the ability to deport migrant children is a "dangerous pull factor."

Health and Human Services "is still approaching its maximum capacity and will very likely require thousands of additional beds in the coming weeks and months," she added.

According to a senior administration official, the costs associated with Nielsen's request could total hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Wirecard seeks to refocus on growth after audit approval

By Douglas Busvine

MUNICH (Reuters) – German payments company Wirecard sought on Thursday to refocus on growth after securing audit approval of annual results which had been delayed by allegations of fraud and false accounting at its Singapore office.

Germany’s leading fintech company has been shaken by a string of reports in the Financial Times, which it has denied, citing a whistleblower’s allegations that local staff padded revenues through sham transactions.

Wirecard said auditor EY had found “no objections against the accounting treatment of the facts that were the subject of various allegation made by a purported whistleblower in Singapore”.

Wirecard won the backing of a heavyweight investor on Wednesday when it announced a partnership with Japan’s Softbank that included the sale of a 900 million euro five-year bond convertible into a 5.6 percent stake in the company.

Its annual results were delayed by an investigation by Wirecard’s outside law firm Rajah & Tann, which exonerated head office but did find that local staff in Singapore may have committed crimes that were not material to the company’s finances.

CEO Markus Braun, who remains the company’s largest shareholder with a 7 percent stake, said that management recognized weaknesses in the handling of software licenses used by its partners and would tighten up compliance in this area.

“We are a growth company,” Braun told a news conference in Munich.

“This is all about innovation and expansion, but of course we must catch up when it comes to compliance, audit and controlling.”

SOFTBANK ALLIANCE

Management confirmed guidance that earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) would rise to between 740 and 800 million euros ($825-$892 million) this year.

Wirecard, which recently displaced Commerzbank from Germany’s DAX blue-chip index, reported a 36.6 percent gain in EBITDA to 560.5 million euros in 2018, while EBITDA margin widened by 0.2 percentage points to 27.8 percent.

Management proposed a dividend of 20 euro cents.

Braun said the Softbank deal offered the chance to work with companies backed by a group which runs the world’s largest venture fund and counts ride hailing firms Uber, Grab and Didi in its portfolio.

Digital payments scenarios that the alliance could work on included connected vehicles or food delivery, said Braun, who will seek shareholder approval for the arrangement.

Wirecard, founded in 1999, has profited from a boom in online payments by acting both as an acquirer, handling payments to merchants, and as an issuer of real and ‘virtual’ payment cards to consumers.

It handled a total of 125 billion euros in transactions for 280,000 merchants last year, generating revenues of 2 billion euros. It expects revenues to grow to 3 billion euros in 2020 and 10 billion in 2025 as digital payments become increasingly pervasive.

ANOTHER FT DENIAL

Even as Wirecard has grown apace, it has remained a favorite target of ‘short’ sellers seizing on negative reports to try to profit from declines in its share price. This has sparked investigations into suspected market manipulation by German prosecutors and the market regulator.

Wirecard, which has already sued the FT, denied another report in the newspaper on Wednesday that alleged the accounts of a Dubai-based unit were not audited in 2016 and 2017. It said all its subsidiaries were audited regularly.

The FT’s reporting, starting Jan. 30, triggered a 50-percent slide in Wirecard’s share price, while Singapore police have opened an investigation and raided Wirecard’s office there.

Braun said he retained his appetite for running a listed company.

“I enjoy being on the stock market,” the Austrian said, “and I haven’t lost my passion for the job in the last two months.”

Hungarian PM says his people want new leaders for Europe

Hungarians want strong new leaders for Europe and a "fresh start" to halt the continent's decline amid Muslim immigration, Hungary's populist prime minister said Friday as he looked ahead to May's European Parliament elections.

"We're the ones who want a strong Europe, strong nation-states and strong new leaders at Europe's fore," Viktor Orban told a crowd gathered at the National Museum for commemorations of Hungary's 1848 revolution against the Habsburgs. "We want a fresh start to stop Europe's decline, to put an end to the fever dreams about a United States of Europe and to let Europe again belong to the Europeans."

Orban also took pride his country's role in stopping "the migrant invasion" of the continent, when Hungary built fences on its southern borders in late 2015 to divert the migrant flow.

"We wish for the veil to fall from the eyes of the people of Europe, so they can see and understand that without Christian culture there will be no free life in Europe," said Orban, who sees Muslim immigrants as threats to Europe's lifestyle. "Without defending our Christian culture, we will lose Europe and Europe will no longer belong to Europeans."

Despite his fiery speech, Orban toned down his message from previous speeches on the commemoration day. He once compared EU officials to Soviet troops, and this year he did not mention by name some of his favorite targets of recent years, like European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Hungarian-American financier George Soros.

On Wednesday, Europe's main center-right group, the European People's Party, will debate the possible suspension or expulsion of Orban's ruling Fidesz party, requested for now by 13 of the EPP's 49 parties.

After years of quarrels, some EPP members say Orban — who returned to power in 2010 and has become a role model for Europe's far-right for his anti-immigration, anti-European Union rhetoric and autocratic style — has strayed too far from Christian Democratic values.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also spoke at Friday's commemoration, highlighting centuries of Polish-Hungarian friendship. Orban said last week that he would seek to form an alliance with Poland's ruling Law and Justice party, helmed by his ally Jaroslaw Kaczynski, if Fidesz is ousted from the EPP.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said trade talks with China are going very well, as the world’s two largest economies seek to end talks with a trade agreement to defuse tensions.

Trump said on Thursday he would soon host China’s President Xi Jinping at the White House.

Earlier this week, the White House said that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer would travel to Beijing for more talks on a trade dispute marked by tit-for-tat tariffs between the two countries.

MOSCOW/MINSK (Reuters) – Russia is confident it can soon resolve a problem of polluted Russian oil contaminating a major pipeline serving Europe and affecting supplies as far west as Germany, a senior official said on Friday at talks with importers about the issue.

Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin did not give a precise timeframe but Moscow has previously said it would pump clean oil to the border with Belarus from April 29, seeking to end a crisis hitting the world’s second-largest crude exporter.

Sorokin was speaking at talks with officials from Belarus, Poland and Ukraine in Minsk on the issue. Belarus said the issue had cost it $100 million, while analysts say alternative supply routes for refiners cannot fully fill the gap.

Poland, Germany, Ukraine and Slovakia have suspended imports of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline. Halting those supplies has knock-on effects further along the network.

The problem arose last week when an unidentified Russian producer contaminated oil with high levels of organic chloride used to boost oil output but which must be separated before shipment as it can destroy refining equipment.

Russia’s Energy Ministry said pipeline monopoly Transneft and other Russian companies had a plan to mitigate the effects of the contaminated oil. It did not give details.

Russian officials have said contaminated oil has already been pumped into storage in Russia and Friday’s talks would focus on how to partially withdraw the tainted crude from the Druzhba pipeline running via other countries.

The suspension cuts off a major supply route for Polish refineries owned by Poland’s PKN Orlen and Grupa Lotos, as well as plants in Germany owned by Total, Shell, Eni and Rosneft.

Some refiners have outlined plans for alternative supplies, but analysts say other routes cannot meet the shortfall.

OIL PRICES

Ukraine’s Ukrtransnafta suspended the transit of oil through the pipeline on Thursday, closing supplies via Druzhba’s southern route to Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

The pipeline issue, which has supported global oil prices, lifted Russian Urals crude differentials to an all-time high on Thursday.

With pipeline supplies to Europe shut, Russia faces a challenge of how to divert about 1 million barrels per day (bpd) that was meant to be shipped through the network to other destinations at the time when export capacity is at its limits.

State-run Russian Railways held talks with energy firms on using up to 5,000 rail tankers to transport crude, RIA news agency reported on Friday.

Concerns about the quality of Urals crude also caused delays in loadings at the Baltic port of Ust-Luga, when buyers refused to lift cargoes, resulting in a brief shutdown of the port on Wednesday and Thursday. An Ust-Luga official and traders said on Friday loadings had resumed.

Russian loading plans indicate it aims to boost Urals exports in May before the expiry of a deal on output cuts agreed with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, Reuters calculations and Energy Ministry data show.

The provisional loading plan for Russia’s Baltic Sea ports and Novorossiisk in May show exports rising to 10.7 million tonnes, the highest level in half a decade.

Minsk estimated its loss from lower oil product exports due to contaminated Russian oil at around $100 million, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported on Thursday, citing Belarusian state oil company Belneftekhim.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, in charge of government energy policy, said this week that those found responsible for contaminating the oil could be fined. He did not provide names.

(Reuters) – India has once again delayed the implementation of higher tariffs on some goods imported from the United States to May 15, a government official said on Friday.

The new tariff structure was to come into force from May 2, the spokeswoman said without citing reasons for the delay.

Angered by Washington’s refusal to exempt it from new steel and aluminum tariffs, New Delhi decided in June last year to raise the import tax from Aug. 4 on some U.S. products including almonds, walnuts and apples.

But since then, New Delhi has repeatedly delayed the implementation of the new tariff.

Trade friction between India and the U.S. has escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans earlier this year to end preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry for up to $5.6 billion worth of its exports to the United States.

In a further blow, U.S. on Monday demanded buyers of Iranian oil stop purchases by May or face sanctions, ending six months of waivers which allowed Iran’s eight biggest buyers including India to continue importing limited volumes.

One of Joe Biden’s newly-hired senior advisers has seemingly had a very recent change of heart.

Symone Sanders, a prominent Democratic strategist and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., staffer in 2016, was announced as one of the big-name members of Team Biden on Thursday.

But Sanders, who has also served as a CNN contributor, is seen in resurfaced footage from November 2016 expressing her opposition to a white person leading her party after Donald Trump’s election.

“In my opinion, we don’t need white people leading the Democratic party right now,” Sanders told host Brianna Keilar during a discussion on Howard Dean potentially becoming DNC chairman.

BIDEN HIRES FORMER BERNIE SANDERS’ SPOKESPERSON AS SENIOR ADVISER

“The Democratic party is diverse, and it should be reflected as so in leadership and throughout the staff, at the highest levels. From the vice chairs to the secretaries all the way down to the people working in the offices at the DNC,” she said.

Sanders wrapped up her remarks by saying: “I want to hear more from everybody. I want to hear from the millennials and the brown folks.”

Footage of the interview was resurfaced by RealClearPolitics.

After news of her hiring broke on Thursday, Sanders backed her new boss on Twitter.

TRUMP ASSESSES 2020 DEMS; TAKES SWIPES AT BIDEN, SANDERS; DISMISSES HARRIS, O’ROURKE; SAYS HE’S ROOTING FOR BUTTIGIEG

“@JoeBiden & @DrBiden are a class act. Over the course of this campaign, Vice President Biden is going to make his case to the American ppl. He won’t always be perfect, but I believe he will get it right,” she wrote.

The hiring of Sanders has been viewed as another indication of the expected tough fight that Biden and Sanders are in for as the two frontrunners battle a deep Democratic field.

While Sanders himself didn’t torch Biden as he jumped into the race, it’s clear that many of his progressive supporters view the former vice president as a threat.

Biden’s entry into the race – at least in the early going – sets up a battle between himself and Sanders, who thanks to his fierce fight with eventual nominee Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic nomination, enjoys name ID on the level of the former vice president.

BIDEN VOWS THAT ‘AMERICA IS COMING BACK,’ SPARKING ‘MAGA’ COMPARISONS

Justice Democrats — who also called Biden “out-of-touch” – is an increasingly influential group among the left of the party. They’ve championed progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York as well as Sanders. The group was founded by members of Sanders 2016 presidential campaign.

Biden has pushed back against the perception that he’s a moderate in a party that’s increasingly moving to the left. Earlier this month he described himself as an “Obama-Biden Democrat.”

And Biden said he’d stack his record against “anybody who has run or who is running now or who will run.”

Former Democratic National Committee chair Donna Brazile – a Fox News contributor – highlighted that “Joe Biden can occupy his own lane in large part because he’s earned it. He’s earned the right to call himself whatever.”

But she emphasized that “elections are not about the past, they’re about the future…I do believe he has the right ingredients. The question is can he find enough people to help him stir the pot.”
