Czech police arrest 2 suspects in German train attack case

Austria's top security official says Czech authorities have arrested two men suspected of forming a terror cell with a man detained over unsuccessful attacks on trains in Germany.

The first suspect, a 42-year-old Iraqi, was arrested in Vienna on Monday. He's suspected of carrying out two attacks late last year, in one of which a high-speed train hit a steel cable stretched over tracks between Nuremberg and Munich. Nobody was hurt.

The Austria Press Agency reported that Interior Minister Herbert Kickl told Austria's parliament Thursday two more suspects believed to have formed a cell with the Iraqi were arrested in Prague.

Czech police said they arrested two foreigners at Austria's request, and that they were detained at Prague Airport shortly after arriving on Wednesday. They declined to give further details.

Bahrain to use Huawei in 5G rollout despite U.S. warnings

DUBAI (Reuters) – Bahrain, headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, plans to roll out a commercial 5G mobile network by June, partly using Huawei technology despite the United States’ concerns the Chinese telecom giant’s equipment could be used for spying.

Washington has warned countries against using Chinese technology, saying Huawei could be used by Beijing to spy on the West. China has rejected the accusations.

VIVA Bahrain, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabian state-controlled telecom STC, last month signed an agreement to use Huawei products in its 5G network, one of several Gulf telecoms firms working with the Chinese company.

“We have no concern at this stage as long as this technology is meeting our standards,” Bahrain’s Telecommunications Minister Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed told Reuters on Tuesday when asked about U.S. concerns over Huawei technology.

The U.S. embassy in Bahrain did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The U.S. Fifth Fleet uses its base in Bahrain, a Western-allied island state off the Saudi coast, to patrol several important shipping lanes, including near Iran.

Bahrain expects to be one of the first countries to make 5G available nationwide, Mohammed said, although he cautioned it would depend on handset and equipment availability.

Early movers like the United States, China, Japan and South Korea are just starting to roll out their 5G networks, but other regions, such as Europe, still years away and the first 5G phones are only likely to be released in the second half of this year.

Bahrain’s state controlled operator Batelco is working with Sweden’s Ericsson on its 5G network, while the country’s third telecom Zain Bahrain is yet to announce a technology provider.

No foreign company is restricted by the government from providing equipment for Bahrain’s 5G network, Mohammed said, adding that the mobile operators chose who they worked with.

Australia and New Zealand have stopped operators using Huawei equipment in their networks but the European Union is expected to ignore U.S. calls to ban the Chinese company, instead urging countries to share more data to tackle cybersecurity risks related to 5G networks.

Mohammed said the rollout of the 5G network was an “important milestone” for Bahrain, which is hoping investments in technology will help spur the economy which was hit hard by the drop in oil prices.

“It is something we are proud to have,” he said.

Ex-Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos formally asks for presidential pardon, would 'be honored to accept'

Former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos told Fox News Tuesday that his legal team has formally asked for a pardon from President Trump.

“My lawyers have formally asked for a pardon. If it’s granted, I would be honored to accept it,” Papadopoulos told Fox News on Tuesday.

The request from Papadopoulos’ legal team comes just days after Special Counsel Robert Mueller announced the completion of his probe into Russian meddling and potential collusion with Trump campaign associates during the 2016 presidential election.

EX-TRUMP CAMPAIGN AIDE GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS SAYS FBI ASKED HIM TO WEAR A WIRE

According to the summary of Mueller’s report, released over the weekend by Attorney General Bill Barr, the special counsel found no evidence of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and Russia, despite numerous offers.

Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to making false statements as part of Mueller’s investigation. The ex-foreign policy adviser served a 14-day prison sentence last year.

Papadopoulos is reportedly considering withdrawing his guilty plea.

There has been speculation over whether the president will choose to pardon any of the Trump campaign associates charged during Mueller's investigation.

BULK OF MUELLER CASES AGAINST TRUMP ASSOCIATES BASED ON FALSE STATEMENTS

Of the six Trump campaign associates indicted in Mueller’s sprawling investigation, five were charged with violating U.S.C. 1001—or making false statements.

They include: former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Papadopoulos; former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn; former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates; former Trump personal attorney Michael Cohen; and former Trump adviser Roger Stone.

Former campaign manager Paul Manafort was the only Trump associate not charged with making false statements -- but rather charged with foreign lobbying, witness tampering and bank and tax fraud. Manafort is set to serve 81 months in prison.

The White House had no comment on the possibility of pardons, but in the past, has said that there has been no discussion of pardons for any of the players in the Mueller investigation.

America's Next Moon Shot: Fixing the Broken Political System

COMMENTARY

X

Story Stream

recent articles

In 1961, President Kennedy challenged America to put a man on the moon before the decade was done, and we did it.

On Friday, with HR 1 as their rocket ship, House Democrats challenged the Republican-held Senate and White House to another big visionary moment: Join us in repairing and modernizing our representative democracy. This bill is a beacon of hope for citizens sick of legislators dialing for dollars, cozying up to lobbyists, and rigging the system.

It is easy to forget that as presidential candidates in 2016, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump could not have been more ideologically different, but both agreed that our political system is grossly unfair and dominated by rich contributors demanding favors. The average American is either forgotten or gets hammered by bigger political powers.

But this bill is the latest move in a campaign that started in the midterms last year, when nearly 50 Democrats won their seats — and the House majority — by campaigning on a reform agenda, rejecting corporate PAC money and fighting back against the culture of corruption in Washington. Now, every declared Democratic 2020 candidate is talking about these issues on the campaign trail because the For the People Act paints an optimistic future for our country where more Americans vote and are incentivized to participate in our great democratic experiment. It is good politics and good policy.

In the past, Republicans and Democrats agreed on core parts of HR 1 that would fix the feckless Federal Election Commission, eliminate dark money, improve transparency, increase the leverage of small-dollar contributions, and help prevent anonymous foreign actors from interfering in our elections. And Democratic leadership should be applauded for thinking bigger and starting a national, comprehensive conversation about repairing our political system. Election eve polling showed that a majority of voters wanted reform to be a top priority for this Congress, and four in five voters supported bipartisan political reform.

The lawmakers who voted for this bill are sending a powerful message that should reverberate around the country: It is time to prioritize the American people over the special interests, to replace fealty to political labels and parties with those politicians that say yes to repairing our political system for the next generation. They are following on the work started by dozens of states and localities that have been strengthening ethics, increasing transparency, and fighting big money.

But now comes the next step in governing — spending time building bipartisan coalitions that will turn this House-passed bill into federal law. The majority leader has pledged to prevent it from moving forward in the Senate, painting it incorrectly as nothing more than a “Democratic Politician Protection Act” and labeling the expanded voting provisions as little other than a paid holiday for federal workers. Both of these are talking points peddled for years by opponents of reform who want the system to stay rigged. I refuse to believe that the late great John McCain was the last of his party in the upper chamber to view political reform as smart politics and policy.

When I served in Congress, I knew who on the other side of the aisle I could approach and work with on legislation I cared deeply about in a bipartisan manner to support efforts to begin programs like Head Start, AmeriCorps and the 9/11 Commission. It is time for Democrats in Congress to do the same because until both parties find common ground, this legislation and others like it will not become law.

At the end of the day, we need to sanitize and clean out the culture of corruption in Washington. The greatest threat to our democracy comes not from foreign enemies outside our borders but from our tendency to retreat into tribalism and not work together to “form a more perfect union.” No one wants the status quo to continue, and 38 percent of Americans support the creation of a third party. Let’s see Democrats and Republicans put country above party.

US new-home sales climbed 4.5% in March

Sales of new U.S. homes increased 4.5% in March, the third straight monthly gain as the housing market appears to be cautiously recovering from a mortgage rate spike last year that caused homebuying to slump.

The Commerce Department says that new homes sold at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 692,000 in March, up from 662,000 in February. For the first three months of 2019, new-home sales are 1.7% higher than the same period a year ago.

March's sales pace was the strongest since November 2017, a sign that the market is building some momentum. New-home sales began to rebound after the average 30-year mortgage rate fell from its recent peak of 5% in November 2018.

The median sales price of a new home in February tumbled 9.7% to $302,700.

Venezuela’s Maduro blames US ‘cyberattacks’ for massive power outage as lights slowly turn back on

The embattled Venezuelan government ordered schools and public offices to remain closed Monday -- the fifth day of a massive, paralyzing blackout that's led to ransacked supermarkets, cars flooding the few working gas stations and unconfirmed reports of at least 17 deaths in powerless medical facilities.

Doctors were caring for their most critically ill patients with the help of generators, but many hospitals were forced to operate without power, raising concerns about vulnerable patients who rely on oxygen concentrators, dialysis machines and other equipment requiring electricity.

Embattled socialist leader President Nicolas Maduro – who is facing a challenge to his rule by the leader of the opposition-led National Assembly, Juan Guaido – blamed the blackouts on an act of “sabotage” at the Guri hydroelectric dam carried out by the United States.

“The national electrical system has been subject to multiple cyberattacks,” he tweeted Sunday. “However, we are making huge efforts to restore stable and definitive supply in the coming hours.”

He also posted a video that showed him with a two-way radio, purportedly talking to military commanders and governors. He said the "macabre strategy" to make Venezuelans desperate and cause them to turn against each other -- or against Maduro -- would fail.

The country’s worst-ever power outrage comes as Maduro faces a hyperinflationary economic collapse and unprecedented political turmoil.

Angry residents in the Caracas neighborhood of Chacao on Sunday set up barricades along a main avenue and on side streets to protest the continued blackout, Reuters reported.

"The food we had in our refrigerators has spoiled, businesses are closed, there's no communication, not even by cell phone," said Ana Cerrato, a 49-year-old merchant who stood in front of a pile of razor wire and debris. "We need help! We are in a humanitarian crisis!"

VENEZUELA IN CHAOS AFTER MASSIVE POWER OUTAGE, MADURO'S REGIME BLAMES MARCO RUBIO

State oil company PDVSA said on Sunday that fuel supplies were guaranteed. But only around 100 of the country's 1,800 service stations were operating due to the blackout, Reuters reported.

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said the military had deployed to protect Venezuela's power installations from alleged saboteurs.

"We know who's behind all this," Padrino Lopez said, echoing the government line that the U.S. staged cyberattacks on Venezuela's infrastructure. U.S. officials have dismissed the allegation.

Meanwhile, Guaido accused the government of covering up the impact of the power cuts on the sick, saying there have been at least 17 deaths of hospital patients – 15 of them in the city of Maturin. He cited reports saying the deaths were related to the outages but did not provide details.

Independent confirmation of the alleged deaths was not immediately available.

AMERICAN JOURNALIST DETAINED BY VENEZUELAN OFFICERS THEN FREED TALKS ABOUT DETENTION

The United States and about 50 other nations support Guaido's claim that he is the interim president and that Maduro should resign so elections can be held and the more than 3 million Venezuelans who have fled their troubled country can start to return. Maduro, who counts Russia and Cuba as allies, says Guaido is a collaborator in a U.S.-led coup.

“Outdated laws” need fixing to deal with the surge in illegal immigrant families crossing the U.S. border with Mexico, a top Border Patrol official said Friday.

Migrant families face no consequences if apprehended trying to cross the border illegally under present law, Border Patrol chief of Operations Brian Hastings claimed during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”

“We need a change in the current outdated laws that we’re dealing with for this current demographic and this crisis that we have,” he said.

Hastings said as of Thursday there have been 440,000 apprehensions along the southwest border. There were 396,000 apprehensions all of last year.

SOUTHERN BORDER AT ‘BREAKING POINT’ AFTER MORE THAN 76,000 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS TRIED CROSSING IN FEBRUARY, OFFICIALS SAY

And those numbers continue to rise, he said.

Historically 70 to 90 percent of apprehensions at the border were quickly returned to Mexico, Hastings said.

Now, 83 percent of those apprehended have come from the Central American northern triangle which includes Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, and of those 63 percent are “family units” and children who cannot be returned, he said.

“There are no consequences that we can apply to this group currently,” Hastings said. “We’re overwhelmed. If you look at agents there doing a tremendous job trying to deal with the flow.”

The law dictates children have to be released after 20 days of detention.

FLORIDA SHERIFF ON BORDER CRISIS AFTER MAJOR DRUG BUST: ‘IT MAKES ME ABSOLUTELY CRAZY’

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., says that has forced immigration officials to release entire families because “you don’t want to separate families.”

Recently, he said he is drafting legislation that would allow children to be detained for more than 20 days.

Hastings said agents are frustrated with the situation but are doing the best they can with the resources they have.

President Trump on Friday blasted liberal billionaire activist Tom Steyer for his continued push to impeach Trump — with Trump claiming Steyer is “trying to remain relevant” and doesn’t have the “guts” to run for the White House himself.

“Weirdo Tom Steyer, who didn’t have the ‘guts’ or money to run for President, is still trying to remain relevant by putting himself on ads begging for impeachment,” the president tweeted. “He doesn’t mention the fact that mine is perhaps the most successful first 2 year presidency in history & NO C OR O! [Collusion or Obstruction]”

TRUMP IMPEACHMENT BACKERS NOT GIVING UP AFTER MUELLER REPORT

Trump and his allies have pointed to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report’s conclusions that there was no evidence of collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign and its decision not to make a conclusion on obstruction of justice as a vindication for the president.

But some Democrats and left-wing activists have pointed to the instances of possible obstruction of justice that the investigation looked into as proof of the need for more investigations or even impeachment proceedings.

ELIZABETH WARREN DOUBLES DOWN ON TRUMP IMPEACHMENT PUSH, SAYS IT’S ‘BIGGER THAN POLITICS’

Steyer has been one of the leaders backing a push to impeach Trump and founded “Need to Impeach” and has kept up that push since the report’s release. He announced on Thursday that he was calling on Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to support impeachment proceedings.

On Friday he responded to Trump’s tweet, calling him “angry and scared.”

“I know you want it all to go away. But for the sake of the country you must face your transgressions. Rage away, but that anger doesn’t matter,” he said in a tweet. The truth and the people will prevail.”

Impeachment hearings have been backed by a number of House Democrats, as well as 2020 presidential hopefuls Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Kamala Harris, D-Calif. However, Pelosi has long been skeptical of impeachment proceedings against Trump.

“I’m not for impeachment,” Pelosi told The Washington Post in an interview last month. “Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.”

A Florida measure that would ban sanctuary cities is set for a vote Friday in the state’s Senate after clearing its first hurdle earlier this week.

The bill would effectively make it against the law for Florida’s police departments to refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials.

“The Governor may initiate judicial proceedings in the name of the state against such officers to enforce compliance,” a draft version of the Senate bill reads.

A House version of the bill, which passed by a 69-47 vote Wednesday, adds that non-complying officials could be suspended or removed from office and face fines of up to $5,000 per day. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign off on the measure, although it’s not clear which version.

LAWRENCE JONES: NEEDLES, DRUG USE AND HUMAN WASTE ARE THE NEW NORMAL IN SAN FRANCISCO

Florida is home to 775,000 illegal immigrants out of 10.7 million present in the United States, ranking the state third among all states.

Nine states — Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas — already have enacted state laws requiring law enforcement to comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Florida doesn’t have sanctuary cities like the ones in California and other states. But Republican lawmakers say a handful of their municipalities — including Orlando and West Palm Beach – are acting as “pseudo-sanctuary” cities, because they prevent law enforcement officials from asking about immigration status when they make arrests.

“There are still people here in the state of Florida, police chiefs that are just refusing to contact ICE, refusing to detain somebody that they know is here illegally,” Florida Republican Rep. Blaise Ingoglia said earlier this month. “So while the actual county municipality doesn’t have an actual adopted policy, they still have people in power within their sheriff’s department or police department that refuse to do it anyway.”

Florida’s Democratic Party has blasted the anti-Sanctuary measures, while the Miami-Dade Police Department says it should be up to federal authorities to handle immigration-related matters.

“House Republicans today sold out their communities to Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis by passing this xenophobic and discriminatory bill,” the state’s Democratic Party said Wednesday after the House passed their version of the bill. “It’s abhorrent that Republican members who represent immigrant communities are now turning their backs on their constituents and jeopardizing their safety.

“Florida has long stood as a beacon for immigrant communities — and today Republicans did the best they could to destroy that reputation,” they added.

By John Stonestreet and Belén Carreño

MADRID (Reuters) – Spain’s Vox party, aligned to a broader far-right movement emerging across Europe, has become the focus of speculation about last minute shifts in voting intentions since official polling for Sunday’s national election ended four days ago.

No single party is anywhere near securing a majority, and chances of a deadlocked parliament and a second election are high.

Leaders of the five parties vying for a role in government get final chances to pitch for power at rallies on Friday evening, before a campaign characterized by appeals to voters’ hearts rather than wallets ends at midnight.

By tradition, the final day before a Spanish election is politics-free.

Two main prizes are still up for grabs in the home straight. One concerns which of the two rival left and right multi-party blocs gets more votes.

The other is whether Vox could challenge the mainstream conservative PP for leadership of the latter bloc, which media outlets with access to unofficial soundings taken since Monday suggest could be starting to happen.

The right’s loose three-party alliance is led by the PP, the traditional conservative party that has alternated in office with outgoing Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s Socialists since Spain’s return to democracy in the 1970s.

The PP stands at around 20 percent, with center-right Ciudadanos near 14 percent and Vox around 11 percent, according to a final poll of polls in daily El Pais published on Monday.

Since then, however, interest in Vox – which will become the first far-right party to sit in parliament since 1982 – has snowballed.

It was founded in 2013, part of a broader anti-establishment, far-right movement that has also spread across – among others – Italy, France and Germany.

While it is careful to distance itself from the ideology of late dictator Francisco Franco, Vox’s signature policies include repealing laws banning Franco-era symbols and on gender-based violence, and shifting power away from Spain’s regional governments.

TRENDING

According to a Google trends graphic, Vox has generated more than three times more search inquiries than any other Spanish political party in the past week.

Reasons could include a groundswell of vocal activist support at Vox rallies in Madrid and Valencia, and its exclusion from two televised debates between the main party leaders, on the grounds of it having no deputies yet in parliament.

Conservative daily La Vanguardia called its enforced absence from Monday’s and Tuesday’s debates “a gift from heaven”, while left-wing Eldiario.es suggested the PP was haemorrhaging votes to Vox in rural areas.

Ignacio Jurado, politics lecturer at the University of York, agreed the main source of additional Vox votes would be disaffected PP supporters, and called the debate ban – whose impact he said was unclear – wrong.

“This is a party polling over 10 percent and there are people interested in what it says. So we lose more than we win in not having them (in the debates),” he said

For Jose Fernandez-Albertos, political scientist at Spanish National Research Council CSIC, Vox is enjoying the novelty effect that propelled then new, left-wing arrival Podemos to 20 percent of the vote in 2015.

“While it’s unclear how to interpret the (Google) data, what we do know is that it’s better to be popular and to be a newcomer, and that Vox will benefit in some form,” he said.

For now, the chances of Vox taking a major role in government remain slim, however.

The El Pais survey put the Socialists on around 30 percent, making them the frontrunners and likely to form a leftist bloc with Podemos, back down at around 14 percent.

The unofficial soundings suggest little change in the two parties’ combined vote, or the total vote of the rightist bloc.

That makes it unlikely that either bloc will win a majority on Sunday, triggering horse-trading with smaller parties favoring Catalan independence – the single most polarizing issues during campaigning – that could easily collapse into fresh elections.

The Amish population in Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County is continuing to grow each year, despite the encroachment of urban sprawl on their communities.

The U.S. Census Bureau says the county added about 2,500 people in 2018. LNP reports that about 1,000 of them were Amish.

Elizabethtown College researchers say Lancaster County’s Amish population reached 33,143 in 2018, up 3.2% from the previous year.

The Amish accounted for about 41% of the county’s overall population growth last year.

Some experts are concerned that a planned 75-acre (30-hectare) housing and commercial project will make it more difficult for the county to accommodate the Amish.

Donald Kraybill, an authority on Amish culture, told Manheim Township commissioners this week that some in the community are worried about the development and the increased traffic it would bring.
