SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Monday he is working with the U.S. government to sow dissent within the Venezuelan Army.

Bolsonaro, during an interview with Jovem Pan radio, said that if there is a military invasion in Venezuela, he would ask seek the counsel of Brazil’s National Defense Council and Congress on what, if any, action his country should take.

“We cannot allow Venezuela to become a new Cuba or North Korea,” the right-wing president said.

Bolsonaro said that if any military intervention actually deposed Venezuela’s president, Nicolas Maduro, it is quite likely that the country would see guerrilla warfare waged by Maduro’s diehard backers and whomever took power.

Brexit fog worse than no-deal risk: Belgian port chief

ZEEBRUGGE, Belgium (Reuters) – Uncertainty over Britain’s departure from the European Union is worse than the prospect of a “no deal” Brexit just days away, according to the head of the port of Zeebrugge.

The Belgian port, half of whose cargo exports head to Britain, has hired more than 140 new customs officers and paved more than 500 new parking spots for trucks to ready itself a Britain’s crash out of the European Union, which could happen on Friday.

“The worst case scenario is already today, that we don’t know what happens. It is always better to know what will happen when than not to know,” Joachim Coens, the port’s president, told Reuters, as fog shrouded ship movements around the docks.

EU leaders will meet in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss British Prime Minister Theresa May’s request for a Brexit extension until the end of June.

Coens said the port had set up an online database to allow exporters to notify terminal operators of the arrival of their cargo in the port. Under a no deal exit, Britain would become a third country outside the European Union, requiring every product to be declared.

The port has sent multiple warnings to companies trading with Britain via Zeebrugge, instructing them to have the necessary documents and comply with rules governing trade with third countries.

However, this is a six-step process that can take more than 90 days to complete, so exporters due to ship after Friday should have applied at the start of January to ensure their products move without delay.

The port, north of the city of Bruges, plans to block exports without the correct documents. In the case of truck drivers, it will either tell them to park until the certification comes through or merely send them away.

Coens said he was not sure many companies were prepared for a no-deal Brexit, but that he did not expect major chaos at the port if Britain crashes out. Many exporters would be forced to delay shipments until appropriate papers came through.

The port chief said he expected 10-20 percent of planned exports arriving at the port would have problems in the case of a no-deal Brexit.

Zeebrugge also handles around 1.1 million passengers per year, from cruise liners and a ferry to the English port of Hull.

Belgium, with a small open economy and close ties to Britain, is expected to be among the EU members hardest hit by Brexit. Leuven University has estimated that a no-deal Brexit could lead to 28,000 job losses in Belgium in the country.

Volvo to build XC40 SUV in China as demand grows

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – Volvo Cars has started producing its XC40 compact crossover SUV in China to bump up capacity and cater for growing demand, the Swedish carmaker said on Friday.

As the cost impact of Washington’s trade war with Beijing spreads, Volvo has been shuffling manufacturing facilities for its models. The dispute has been squeezing capacity at Volvo’s Ghent plant, the only site where the XC40 – the 2018 European Car of the Year – is currently produced.

Volvo, which is owned by China’s Geely, said that from April 8 it was also being manufactured in Luqiao, south of Shanghai.

“Demand for the XC40 has exceeded our most optimistic expectations,” Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson. “Building (it)… in Luqiao creates extra capacity, adds flexibility to our global manufacturing network and is a clear proofpoint of our strategy to ‘build where you sell’.”

The model has sold more than 100,000 units since its launch in late 2017.

The XC40 is based on a platform Volvo developed with Geely designed to share the costs of developing and manufacturing a competitive vehicle.

The platform, called Compact Modular Architecture, is shared by vehicles produced by sister brands Lynk & Co and Polestar, with Geely also planning to base a new Coupe SUV on it.

Automakers are going through one of their most uncertain periods, hit by trade wars, rising costs for developing electric cars and an industry downturn that has dented even the most profitable brands.

The Luqiao plant, owned by Geely and operated by Volvo, currently builds the 01 SUV sold by car subscription-focused brand Lynk & Co. Polestar, Volvo and Geely’s electric performance brand, said separately on Friday that starting next year it would also use Luqiao to produce Polestar 2, its first fully electric sedan that is intended to rival Tesla’s mass market Model 3.

Geely has forecast flat sales in 2019 due to uncertainty about domestic demand, while Volvo has said it expects margins to remain under pressure.

April 12, 2019

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will be wearing a different helmet for the 2019 season, although it will have nothing to do with finding a new team.

Brady’s model of helmet was banned from the NFL because it did not meet necessary safety standards in laboratory testing, according to ESPN. In total, 32 players from 2018 were wearing a helmet that no longer met NFL standards, the league announced Friday.

Brady’s model was actually deemed inadequate before last season, but players using substandard models were given a one-year grace period to make a change.

The NFL and the NFL players Association announced 11 new helmets that were added to the approved equipment list. There were no additions to the banned list this time around.

Team equipment managers will be subject to discipline if they facilitate the use of a banned helmet, or know of a player using one, according to ESPN.

The NFL and the NFL Players Association have been putting helmets through new testing standards since 2015. The tests, conducted in Canada, include crash test dummies outfitted with helmets that are subjected to various impacts to record how much force is transferred.

Stab-spree suspect's bid to change name to 'Eternal Love' infuriates parents of slain 3-year-old girl

The parents of a 3-year-old Idaho girl who died days after a mass stabbing during her birthday party last summer are objecting to a request by her alleged killer to change his name to “Eternal Love.”

Timmy Earl Kinner Jr. -- who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Ruya Kadir, as well as several other felonies for in connection with the knife attack at a Boise apartment complex -- filed a petition for the name change in December. A hearing is set for March 19.

The attack left five other children, ages 3 to 12, and three adults injured, authorities have said. It also left the city in shock.

“It’s just something we don’t see in Boise, the level of violence which occurred here,”  Boise Police Chief William Bones said during a news conference after the attack. “This was a brutal crime, not just against the individuals involved, but against the families and the very fabric of our community,”

Kadir’s parents, Bifituu Kadir and Recep Seran, argued that Kinner's name change could cause confusion for a jury and legal counsel. They are asking for his request to be dismissed, as he has not raised any “meaningful reason” for seeking a name change, according to their motion.

Kinner wrote on the request form that he wanted to change his name because it was his "God given right & the title I want to be known as & remembered by,” the Idaho Statesmen reported.

Ruya Kadir, a refugee from Eithiopia, died of her injuries when she was allegedly stabbed by Kinner during the brutal attack. The day before, he had been asked to leave a birthday party at the same apartment complex because of bad behavior, the paper said.

Fed should be vigilant about too-low inflation, Williams says

By Trevor Hunnicutt

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Federal Reserve needs to make sure that tight labor markets do not spark a sustained surge in inflation, but equally that inflation expectations do not get stuck too low, New York Federal Reserve Bank President John Williams said on Friday.

The concern about excessively low inflation is remarkable in the context of a U.S. unemployment rate of 4 percent, well below what most economists believe is sustainable in the long run. Traditionally, economists have found that when labor markets run hot, eventually inflation will as well.

That relationship may have changed, according to a spate of new research from within and outside of the Fed that some policymakers have used to justify the U.S. central bank’s new stance of “patience” on interest rates despite very low unemployment.

Williams made the remarks in response to a paper released on Friday that argued that though upward price pressures are currently muted, the Fed needs to guard against the possibility that low unemployment rates and rising wages could eventually spark higher inflation, as it did in the 1960s.

“I concur that we must remain vigilant regarding a sustained takeoff in inflation,” Williams said, citing his own analysis that showed low unemployment does in fact still exert upward pressure on prices.

But unlike the 1960s, he said, inflation dynamics have changed so that even if prices surge temporarily, that increase does not get embedded into inflation expectations, keeping inflation from rising sustainably above healthy levels.

Indeed, he said, inflation expectations are key to keeping inflation on track, and expectations are shaped in large part by experience. Inflation’s recent track record of riding well below the Fed’s 2-percent target is, therefore, concerning, he said.

“We must be equally vigilant that inflation expectations do not get anchored at too low a level,” he said. “This persistent undershoot of the Fed’s target risks undermining the 2 percent inflation anchor.”

Peter Schiff: US Debt the Real National Emergency

On Friday. Pres. Trump declared a national emergency.

Based on that declaration, the president will reallocate $6.5 billion from other government programs to fund a border wall.

In his podcast on Friday, Peter Schiff said there is indeed a national emergency, but it has nothing to do with the border.

“Of course, the real national emergency is not the lack of a wall, the failure to build a wall, but building up the national debt.”

Just last week, the US Treasury said the national debt has eclipsed the $22 trillion mark. When President Trump took office in January 2017, the debt was at $19.95 trillion. That’s a $2.06 trillion increase in the debt in just over two years.

And as Peter pointed out, this is just the tip of a huge iceberg.

“This is just a funded portion of the debt. This is where the US government sells a bond and somebody owns that bond. It doesn’t include liabilities like what the government owes for Social Security, or guaranteed bank deposits, or mortgages, or student loans, or all that nonsense. That’s not there. Those are contingent liabilities. They’re just as real. They’re not even part of the national debt.”

Peter said it’s too bad Trump doesn’t want to do anything about that crisis.

“We are headed for a train wreck in this country because of the national debt. What Trump has been building while he hasn’t been building a wall is he’s been building up the size of government, and he’s been building up the deficits that have been necessary to finance that government buildup.”

And yet nobody seems concerned. The president didn’t even mention the debt in the State of the Union address.  According to a tweet by ABC White House correspondent Tara Palmeri, when asked if Trump was going to talk about the deficit, the president’s chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, said: “nobody cares.”

A lot of people claim that we really don’t need to worry about the debt because, after all, it’s been growing for years and nothing has happened. Peter has a different take.

“Just because we haven’t suffered a crisis – yet- based on this debt doesn’t mean that one isn’t coming. In fact, there’s no way around it. It’s just a question of when. It’s not a question of if, it’s a question of when, and I think when is a lot closer than a lot of people think.”

In this podcast, Peter also covered some more negative economic news, Fed news, including the fact that the Fed is now talking about using quantitative easing “more readily” and the fact that the mainstream doesn’t know what’s going on. It’s like a deer in the headlights.

“You know what happens eventually to the deer in the headlight. He gets hit by the car and he dies.”

(Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures were flat on Friday, as investors paused ahead of GDP data, which is expected to show the world’s largest economy maintained a moderate pace of growth in the first quarter.

Gross domestic product probably increased at a 2% annualized rate in the quarter as a burst in exports, strong inventory stockpiling and government investment in public construction projects offset a slowdown in consumer and business spending, according to a Reuters survey of economists.

The Commerce Department report will be published at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The GDP data comes as investors look for fresh catalysts to push the markets higher. The S&P 500 index is about 0.5% below its record high hit in late September, after surging nearly 17% this year.

First-quarter earnings have been largely upbeat, with nearly 78% of the 178 companies that have reported so far surpassing earnings estimates, according to Refinitiv data.

Wall Street now expects S&P 500 earnings to be in line with the year-ago quarter, a sharp improvement from the 2.3% fall expected at the start of April.

Amazon.com Inc rose 0.9% in premarket trading after the e-commerce giant reported quarterly profit that doubled and beat estimates on soaring demand for its cloud and ad services.

Ford Motor Co shares surged 8.5% after the automaker posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings largely due to strong pickup truck sales in its core U.S. market.

Mattel Inc jumped 8% after the toymaker beat analysts’ estimates for quarterly revenue, as a more diverse range of Barbie dolls powered sales in the United States.

At 6:52 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 35 points, or 0.13%. S&P 500 e-minis were down 1.5 points, or 0.05% and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 10.75 points, or 0.14%.

Among decliners, Intel Corp slumped 7.7% after it cut its full-year revenue forecast and missed quarterly sales estimate for its key data center business.

Rival Advanced Micro Devices declined 0.8%.

Oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp are expected to report results later in the day.

WARSAW (Reuters) – Germany could owe Poland more than $850 billion in reparations for damages it incurred during World War Two and the brutal Nazi occupation, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Germany, one of Poland’s biggest trade partners and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO, says all financial claims linked to World War Two have been settled.

The right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) has revived calls for compensation since it took power in 2015 and has made the promotion of Poland’s wartime victimhood a central plank of its appeal to nationalism.

PiS has yet to make an official demand for reparations but its combative stance towards Germany has strained relations.

“Poland lost not only millions of its citizens but it was also destroyed in an unusually brutal way,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who heads the Polish parliamentary committee on reparations, told Reuters in an interview.

“Many (victims) are still alive and feel deeply wronged.”

His comments come a month before European Parliament elections in which populist and nationalist parties are expected to do well. Poland will also hold national elections later this year, with PiS still well ahead of its rivals in opinion polls.

EU LARGESSE

Mularczyk said the reparations figure could amount to more than 10 times the estimated 100 billion euros ($111 billion) that Poland has received so far in European Union funds since it joined the bloc in 2004.

Germany is the biggest net donor to the EU budget and some Germans regard its contributions as generous compensation to recipient countries like Poland which suffered under Nazi rule.

In 1953 Poland’s then-communist rulers relinquished all claims to war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to free East Germany, also a Soviet satellite, from any liabilities. PiS says that agreement is invalid because Poland was unable to negotiate fair compensation.

Mularczyk said his committee hoped to complete its report on the reparations issue by Sept. 1, the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s invasion.

Accusing Berlin of playing “diplomatic games” over the issue, he said: “The matter is being swept under the rug (by Germany) … until it’ll be wiped from the memory, from people’s awareness.”

His comments come after the Greek parliament voted this month to seek billions of euros in German reparations for the Nazi occupation of their country.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States did not pay any money to North Korea as it sought the release of comatose American student Otto Warmbier.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump had approved payment of a $2 million bill from North Korea to cover its care of the college student, who died shortly after he was returned to the United States after 17 months in a North Korean prison.

Al-Qaida in Yemen is vowing to avenge beheadings carried out by Saudi Arabia this week — an indication that some of the 37 Saudis executed on terrorism-related charges were members of the Sunni militant group.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, as the branch is called, posted a statement on militant-linked websites on Friday, accusing the kingdom of offering the blood of the “noble children of the nation just to appease America.”

The statement says al-Qaida will “never forget about their blood and we will avenge them.”

U.S. ally Saudi Arabia on Tuesday executed 37 suspects convicted on terrorism-related charges. Most were believed to be Shiites but at least one was believed to be a Sunni militant.

His body was pinned to a pole in public as a warning to others.

For two friends with checkered pasts it was the luck of a lifetime: a 4 million-pound ($5.2 million) lottery win.

But Mark Goodram and Jon-Ross Watson may see their celebrations cut short.

The Sun newspaper reports that Britain’s National Lottery is withholding the payout as it investigates whether the men, who have a string of criminal convictions, used illicit means to buy the winning ticket.

The Sun said neither man has a bank account, leading lottery organizers to investigate how they obtained the bank-issued debit card that paid for the 10 pound ($13) scratch card.

Camelot, which runs the lottery, said Friday it couldn’t confirm details of the story because of winner-anonymity rules. The firm said it holds a “thorough investigation” if there is any doubt about a claim.
