American tourist abducted, held for ransom in Uganda tourist park

An American citizen and her local guide have been abducted during a game ride in a prominent tourist park in Uganda, a U.S federal official confirmed to Fox News on Wednesday.

The incident is believed to have happened between 6 and 7 pm Tuesday near a wilderness camp in Queen Elizabeth National Park, where two armed men held four tourists at gunpoint. Two were rescued and alerted authorities.

However, the mobile phone of the American woman, who has been identified as Kimberley Sue Endecott, 35, was used to make a ransom demand of $500,000, according to Ugandan police.

ISIS RECRUITMENT DRIVE IN SOMALIA COULD PROVE 'MASSIVE THREAT TO THE US PRESENCE' IN THE REGION

“The police dispatched an elite squad from the Tourism Police to reinforce security teams and actively pursue a group of 4 unknown gunmen,” the Deputy Police Spokesperson Polly Namaye said in a statement, noting that they believe the victims are likely still in the area. “We want to further reassure the public that this is the first incident of this kind registered in such a very peaceful setting.”

The U.S. official confirmed to Fox News that they are currently in the process of trying to gather all the details of the alleged ransom demand.

The exit between the park and the Democratic Republic of Congo has since been closed. It is not yet known which group or individuals are behind the kidnapping.

ISIS teen wife bemoans UK's 'unjust' decision to revoke her citizenship

A teen who fled Britain to join the Islamic State complained that it was “unjust” and “heartbreaking” that the British government revoked her citizenship, effectively putting an end to her return to Britain.

Shamima Begum, who left the country in 2015 to join the terror group as a so-called jihadi bride when she was 15 years old, has ignited a debate whether she and her newborn child should be allowed to return after she was found in a refugee camp.

The British government came out against her return, while some other experts have expressed possible legal problems of blocking a citizen’s return to the country. But on Tuesday the British government decided to strip Begum of her British citizenship.

TEEN WHO JOINED ISIS GIVES BIRTH IN SYRIA, SAYS PEOPLE SHOULD BE SYMPATHETIC TOWARD HER

Following the decision, Begum told ITV News that the move was unfair to her. “I'm a bit shocked. It’s a bit upsetting and frustrating. I feel like it’s a bit unjust on me and my son,” said Begum, who gave birth to her son on Sunday. The father is Yago Riedijk, an ISIS member from the Netherlands.

“I'm a bit shocked. It’s a bit upsetting and frustrating. I feel like it’s a bit unjust on me and my son."

— Shamima Begum

“It’s kind of heartbreaking to read. My family made it sound like it would be a lot easier for me to come back to the UK when I was speaking to them in Baghouz. It’s kind of hard to swallow,” she continued.

She added: “I heard that other people are being sent back to Britain so I don’t know why my case is any different to other people, or is it just because I was on the news four years ago?”

Begum went on to suggest that her efforts to get into Europe aren’t over and she may try to get Dutch citizenship because she’s married to a Dutch citizen.

“Another option I might try with my family is my husband is from Holland and he has family in Holland,” she said. “Maybe I can ask for citizenship in Holland. If he gets sent back to prison in Holland I can just wait for him while he is in prison.”

The British government took the rare step to revoke Begum’s citizenship due to her Bangladeshi nationality, yet the family’s attorney Tasnime Akunjee told the Independent that she only has the British citizenship and “never had a Bangladeshi passport.”

He also tweeted the family was “disappointed” by the decision and “all legal avenues” are being considered to challenge the government’s decision.

Begum has been under the media spotlight for weeks now and has caused uproar with her comments indicating a lack of remorse for joining the terror group.

“I think a lot of people should have sympathy toward me for everything I have been through. I didn't know what I was getting into when I left,” she told Sky News.

When asked whether it was a mistake to travel to Syria, she told the broadcaster: “In a way, yes, but I don't regret it because it's changed me as a person. It's made me stronger, tougher, you know.”

“I married my husband, I wouldn't have found someone like him back in the UK,” she continued. “I had my kids, I did have a good time there. It's just that then things got harder and I couldn't take it any more and I had to leave.”

Earlier this week, she also caused uproar after saying the Manchester Arena terror attack that killed 22 people, including young children, was “justified” because of the airstrikes that allegedly killed civilians in Syria.

She told the BBC that while “it was “wrong that innocent people did get killed,” she noted that “It’s a two-way thing really because women and children are being killed in the Islamic State right now and it’s kind of retaliation. Their justification was that it’s retaliation so I thought ok that is a fair justification.”

Following Begum’s spotlight in the media, other female ISIS wives came forward asking to be brought back to their home countries.

ALABAMA-BORN ISIS WIFE WHO REPORTEDLY TOLD AMERICANS TO KILL THEMSELVES NOW BEGGING TO COME HOME

Hoda Muthana, a 24-year-old woman from Alabama, asked for forgiveness and pleaded the American government to bring her back after she was captured by Kurdish forces.

“I would tell them please forgive me for being so ignorant, and I was really young and ignorant and I was 19 when I decided to leave,” she told the Guardian when asked if she had a message for American officials.

“I believe that America gives second chances. I want to return and I’ll never come back to the Middle East. America can take my passport and I wouldn’t mind,” she added, noting that she has not been in contact with anyone from the State Department.

She told the newspaper that she was “brainwashed” into joining ISIS years ago and that her last four years with the terrorist group have been a traumatizing experience where “we starved and we literally ate grass."

In 2015, Muthana reportedly operated a Twitter account and once tried to use it to incite Americans to commit acts of violence amongst themselves on national holidays.

Dalai Lama hospitalized with chest infection, in stable condition, reports say

The Dalai Lama has been taken to a private hospital in New Delhi, India, after he was diagnosed with a chest infection, his private secretary told reporters Tuesday.

"Today [Tuesday] morning his holiness felt some discomfort and he was flown to Delhi for [a] checkup," Tenzin Taklha told Reuters. "Doctors have diagnosed him with chest infection and he is being treated for that. His condition is stable now. He will be treated for two [to] three days here."

The 83-year-old has lived in exile in the northern Indian town of Dharamshala since 1959, when Communist Chinese troops crushed an uprising against Beijing's rule of the long-disputed region. China claimed Tibet has been part of its territory for more than seven centuries, while many Tibetans have insisted they essentially were independent for most of that time.

The Dalai Lama told reporters last week that he was not seeking independence for Tibet, but would prefer a "reunion" with China under mutually acceptable terms.

"I prefer Tibet remain within the zone of China. Some kind of reunion," he said.

He added that Chinese and Tibetans could live side-by-side, with China helping Tibetans economically and gaining from their knowledge.

The Dalai Lama said he has been in contact with China's leadership off-and-on since 1979, but little progress has been made since.

PARIS (Reuters) – The French economy grew slightly more than previously thought last year, helping to trim the deficit, Budget Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Tuesday.

“Last year, we had forecast 1.5 percent growth like all of the (economic) institutes … We should be around 1.6 percent,” Darmanin said on RTL radio.

Shortly afterwards, the INSEE official statistics agency confirmed the 2018 growth figure of 1.6 percent. Previously it had said the government cut the public deficit to a 12-year low last year of 2.5 percent of gross domestic product.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Federal Reserve may lower the interest it pays on excess reserves banks leave with it by 5 basis points at its April 30-May 1 policy meeting in a bid to prevent the federal funds rate from drifting higher, Morgan Stanley analysts said on Friday.

This would mark the third such “technical” adjustment on the interest on excess reserves (IOER) following cuts last June and December.

In response to the news that the U.S. economy rose 3.2 percent in the first quarter of 2019, White House National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow said that this “prosperity cycle” will continue if President Trump‘s policies stay in place.

Calling the advance in gross domestic product a “blow-out number,” Kudlow told “America’s Newsroom” Friday that it serves as concrete proof Trump’s measures to grow the economy have been successful.

“I’ll just say, Trump’s policies to rebuild the economy, lower taxes, regulations, opening energy, trade reform. Look, this stuff is working,” he said.

“It tells me, among other things, that the prosperity cycle we have entered into is continuing, it is strong. It has legs and momentum and frankly it is going to go on for quite some time,” he continued. “This is the new Trump economy. Some people don’t like that or they don’t agree with that. I respect the differences but I’ll tell you it’s working.”

STUART VARNEY: THANKS TO TRUMP, AMERICANS ARE FEELING BETTER ABOUT THEIR FINANCES

Kudlow added that Trump has “ended the war” on business and success, and is rallying for the small business owners of America.

“The president is rebuilding incentives, he is rebuilding confidence, he the rebuilding optimism,” he said. “He is basically saying you should keep more of what you earn. He is basically saying to small businesses we’ll cut the paperwork back and make it easier for you to start a business and prosper.”

Kudlow said the Trump administration is also working with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders to implement bipartisan deals to ensure the continuation of the GDP’s success.

“If the policies and the principles remain in place — and I believe they will — then I believe this new prosperity expansion cycle is going to go on for a whole bunch of more years,” he said.

Tennis - Australian Open - Women's Singles Final

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – World number one Naomi Osaka came from behind in the final set to beat Croatian Donna Vekic 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) on Friday and move into the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix semi-finals.

Osaka comfortably won the opening set but was tested by the Croatian, who pushed her to the limit in the second and third. The Japanese made 45 unforced errors as she struggles to get to grips with swapping hard courts for clay.

Osaka was visibly frustrated and trailed 5-1 in the final set but she refused to give up and found her rhythm to break Vekic twice and prevent her from serving for the match.

In the tiebreaker, a confident Osaka upped her baseline game and had two early mini breaks before wrapping up the match in two hours and 18 minutes. An infuriated Vekic even smashed her racket after losing the match.

“I told myself I didn’t want to have any regrets here,” Osaka said. “I was stressed out when I went down 1-5… but this (comeback) was pretty good because I don’t play really well on clay.”

Earlier, world number three Petra Kvitova came back from a set down to beat Anastasija Sevastova 2-6 6-2 6-3 and move into the tournament’s semi-finals for the third time in her career.

Sevastova had a dream start, breaking Kvitova twice to take a 3-0 lead as the Czech struggled with her first serve. Kvitova also made a slew of unforced errors, with many of her returns going long.

Sevastova used the full width of the court to get the better of Kvitova, who played on the back foot for much of the first set as the Latvian gave her little time to catch her breath.

However, Kvitova recovered in the second set and she broke Sevastova’s serve when she was 3-2 up, winning 10 straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Sevastova looked shaken and was broken again to give Kvitova the second set.

Kvitova took command in the final set and broke a visibly upset Sevastova to take a 3-1 lead before easing into the semis.

“In the first set I missed almost everything. I was pretty slow and she just couldn’t miss,” Kvitova said. “In the second set it was very important for me to stay on my serve and the chance to break her came.”

Kiki Bertens plays Angelique Kerber later on Friday and Victoria Azarenka faces Anett Kontaveit in the last quarter-final.

The Latest on fatal pileup on Interstate 70 near Denver (all times local):

10:10 a.m.

Colorado officials say four people have died after a semi-truck hauling lumber plowed into vehicles on Interstate 70, causing a fire so intense that it melted the roadway and metal off of cars.

Authorities had to wait until daylight Friday to confirm the death toll from Thursday’s 28-vehicle pileup because of the devastation caused by the fire.

Six people were taken to hospitals with injuries. Their conditions are unclear.

Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman says the driver of the truck who caused the crash sustained minor injuries. He has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

Officials say the driver was headed down a hill when he slammed into slower traffic. Countryman says there is no indication the crash was intentional.

7:40 a.m.

A truck driver blamed for causing a deadly pileup involving over two dozen vehicles near Denver has been arrested on vehicular homicide charges.

Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman said Friday that there’s no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in Thursday’s crash.

The unidentified driver was headed down a hill on Interstate 70 when he slammed into slower traffic and sparked a massive fire. Countryman said police are looking at whether his brakes were working properly.

He said 28 vehicles were involved, up from the initial 15 vehicles police reported after further sorting through the burned wreckage.

Police still say there were multiple fatalities but are still working to provide an exact number.

The highway is expected to remain closed until Saturday.

Tiger woods celebrates after winning the 2019 Masters
FILE PHOTO: Golf – Masters – Augusta National Golf Club – Augusta, Georgia, U.S. – April 14, 2019 – Tiger Woods of the U.S. celebrates on the 18th hole after winning the 2019 Masters. REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson

April 26, 2019

Tiger Woods is sending a message that he thinks he still has enough left, emotionally and physically, to win three more major championships to tie Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 titles.

Speaking to GolfTV in his first sit-down interview since the Masters, Woods said he has taken some time off since his victory at Augusta National, which still doesn’t feel real.

“Honestly, it’s hard to believe,” Woods said. “I was texting one of my good friends last night … that I couldn’t believe that I won the tournament. That it really hasn’t sunk in. I haven’t started doing anything. I’ve just been laying there. And every now and again, I’ll look over there on the couch and there’s the jacket.”

That’s the fifth green jacket for the 43-year-old Woods, who hadn’t won a major tournament since the 2008 U.S. Open. Along the way, four back surgeries, a divorce and other personal issues derailed him.

He said he has been spending time with his children – daughter Sam, 11, and son Charlie, 10 – who weren’t born when their father was the most dominant golfer on the planet.

“They never knew golf to be a good thing in my life and only the only thing they remember is that it brought this incredible amount of pain to their dad and they don’t want to ever want to see their dad in pain,” Woods said. “And so to now have them see this side of it, the side that I’ve experienced for so many years of my life, but I had a battle to get back to this point, it feels good.”

He said he hopes – maybe expects — they’ll see this side again.

And no one will take Woods for granted at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black Course on Long Island, N.Y., which starts May 16.

Woods said he’ll be ready for a course he already conquered once in a major: the 2002 U.S. Open.

“I’m doing all the visual stuff, but I haven’t put in the physical work yet. But it’s probably coming this weekend,” he said.

Before Woods encountered health and personal problems, it was expected that topping Nicklaus’ major mark was “when” and not “if.” Then the certainty went away, but Woods thought he still had a chance.

“I always thought it was possible, if I had everything go my way. It took him an entire career to get to 18, so now that I’ve had another extension to my career – one that I didn’t think I had a couple of years ago – if I do things correctly and everything falls my way, yeah, it’s a possibility. I’m never going to say it’s not.

“Now I just need to have a lot of things go my way, and who’s to say that it will or will not happen? That’s what the future holds, I don’t know. The only thing I can promise you is this: that I will be prepared.”
