LONDON (Reuters) – British insurer Aviva said on Wednesday that Andy Briggs, head of its UK insurance business, was stepping down from the company, just weeks after missing out on its top job to newly installed Chief Executive Maurice Tulloch.

Briggs will remain with the insurer until October 23 to support an orderly transition, Aviva said in a statement.

He joined the Board of Aviva in April 2015 to lead its enlarged UK Life business following the takeover of Friends Life where he served as Group Chief Executive.

Angela Darlington, currently Aviva’s Group Chief Risk Officer, will become interim chief executive of UK Insurance, subject to regulatory approval.

Aviva also said Tulloch would lead a review of the UK businesses to ensure “the appropriate management structure” going forward.

Man runs into burning home to save dog stuck inside, dramatic video shows

A California man is lucky to be uninjured after a brazen dash into his burning home to rescue his beloved 2-year-old blue nose pit bull, with the heroic deed captured in a dramatic video.

A cellphone video shows homeowner Jose Guzman flying past firefighters battling a massive multi-house blaze in Pala, California on Sunday afternoon. He ignores their protests because his pit bull, Gabbana, was still inside his house.

“I knew something could’ve happened to me or both of us, but it didn’t go through my mind at the time,” Guzman told PEOPLE. “That dog is part of my family. She’s been with us through downs and ups and I couldn’t leave her there. I would do it again if I had to; I would do it for anybody in my family.”

FLORIDA DOG FOUND WITH MOUTH TAPED SHUT ADOPTED BY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, “DEPUTIZED”

Moments later Guzman and his pup can be seen running out of the property to safety. With the adrenaline pumping, he said he didn’t even notice that he was burned on his face and arms.

“I ran through here, tried to stay in the middle, this was going, this was on fire, couldn't see anything,” he told 10 News San Diego, adding that Gabbana was hiding behind the toilet. "All I wanted was to get my dog, I came in here, I didn't hesitate, I just, I had to get her; she's part of the family."

Gabbana experienced some burns to her nose and paw but is expected to be fine.

Adam Guzman, who is not related to Jose, captured the now viral video and told PEOPLE that everyone was “very emotional” -- and many did not expect to see Jose make it out.

“I thought he’s a goner. The flames were hot and I couldn’t imagine running through those flames. That was it, that was the last time I’d see him,” he added. “When he came running out with the dog, it was a big relief that he was alive and brought out the dog at the same time.”

French foreign minister at German Cabinet under new pact

France's foreign minister is attending a meeting of Germany's Cabinet, following up on a friendship treaty that the two European powers signed earlier this year.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said as he welcomed French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian on Wednesday he hoped the visit was "setting in motion a long-lasting tradition." The two ministers are set to meet again in New York later this week, where Germany is coordinating its presidency of the U.N. Security Council in April with France's presidency this month.

France and Germany signed a pact in January renewing the decades-old friendship between two countries that have traditionally led European integration but also had frequent disagreements. It calls for a member of one country's government to attend the other's Cabinet at least once per quarter.

North Korea, seeking food aid, links sanctions to shortages

North Korean factories are filling city store shelves with ever better and fancier snack foods and sugary drinks, while government officials and international aid organizations warn the nation could be on the verge of a major food crisis.

North Korea's U.N. ambassador, Kim Song, issued an unusual appeal for "urgent" food assistance last month. He cited record-high temperatures, drought and flooding that cut the harvest this year by more than 10 percent.

The government says it's stepping up imports and working to increase the output of early and basic crops such as wheat and barley.

Hazel Smith, a North Korea expert at the University of London, says supplies from all sources might only stretch to feed about three-quarters of the population at the most basic survival level this year.

UK opposition leader Corbyn says won’t attend Trump state dinner

April 26, 2019

LONDON (Reuters) – The leader of Britain’s opposition Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, said on Friday he had turned down an invitation to a state dinner which will be part of U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Britain in June.

“Theresa May should not be rolling out the red carpet for a state visit to honor a president who rips up vital international treaties, backs climate change denial and uses racist and misogynist rhetoric,” Corbyn said in a statement.

He said maintaining the relationship with the United States did not require “the pomp and ceremony of a state visit” and he said he would welcome a meeting with Trump “to discuss all matters of interest.”

Leftists Harass, Threaten Alex Jones Then Deceptively Edit the Footage to Portray Jones as the Bad Guy

A group of leftists hurled threats and abuse at Alex Jones during an incident in Austin, Texas last night before deceptively editing the footage to make it look like Jones had initiated the confrontation.

Jones went for dinner at Lucy’s Fried Chicken on South Congress with his wife and Joe Rogan.

They took their seats at a small bar area inside the restaurant. Most of the seating for customers is outside.

Within 5 minutes, a dark haired man entered the bar area from outside, approached Jones, leaned in to his ear and seethed, “Eat shit Alex Jones, you’re gonna get it, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you!”

Jones ignored the man, but 10 minutes later was confronted by another individual, who told him, “Fuck you, fuck your family!”

Further obscenities were shouted towards Jones and his wife a third time when the door to the outside briefly swung open.

At this point, Jones told his wife to finish her meal as he felt the situation was going to end badly and wanted to pay the tab and leave.

As soon as Jones and his wife walked outside to leave, he saw a bunch of stereotypical wild eyed, crazy looking leftists screaming about “eating and killing the rich”.

The group had chosen to sit at the table right by the exit door and all had their cameras rolling, having clearly set up the confrontation.

Jones then recognized one of the men who had threatened him earlier. The individual started shouting “eat shit eat shit” over and over again.

Knowing that the footage would be posted to the Internet, Jones began recording video.

null

Footage of the confrontation was later posted to Reddit and went viral. However, it cut out the part where the leftists initiated the incident by hurling violent threats at Jones and his wife as they sat peacefully trying to eat dinner.

Infowars will be posting the full footage later today which will be added to this article. The raw footage shows managers of the restaurant acknowledging that the leftists had initiated the confrontation by threatening Jones.

The Reddit post makes out that Jones randomly started yelling at the group because he couldn’t “handle ridicule in public,” with no mention of the violent threats against Jones and his wife that preceded this encounter.

The irony is that while the leftists claimed that it was Jones who couldn’t handle ridicule, they couldn’t even handle Jones’ presence in a restaurant without freaking out.

They also can’t handle the First Amendment and freedom of speech, given that their taunts included boasts about how Jones had been deplatformed by Big Tech.

Jones told Infowars that he gets harassed in this manner four or five times a month but normally doesn’t react.

“They baited me like a matador does with a bull and then when I open the door, they’re all waiting with their cameras going and then edited it deceptively because it didn’t look right because showing them chanting obscenities at me would have ruined their narrative,” said Jones.

“The biggest takeaway from this isn’t that the left congenitally deceives and tries to manipulate the population as a group. The bigger takeaway is that if you’re wearing a MAGA hat or if you’re affiliated with capitalism or Trump or anything Americana, that these people hate you so much they would behave and act like this. This is a reflection of their hatred for America. This is what we routinely hear from Democrats – that America was never great and will never be great.”

The practice of harassing and abusing Trump supporters who are trying to enjoy private time with their families has become a leftist specialty.

During a speech last year, Rep. Maxine Waters called on her supporters to harass Trump administration members in public.

“Let’s make sure we show up wherever we have to show up. And if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd. And you push back on them. And you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere,” said Waters.

Surveillance clips show Chinese billionaire with accuser

An attorney for JD.com founder Richard Liu said Monday that surveillance video showing the Chinese businessman in an elevator and walking arm-in-arm with a woman who has accused him of rape provides a different account of what happened that night.

Two edited videos of Liu and his accuser were posted Monday to a Chinese social media site. One video shows the pair leaving a group dinner in Minneapolis on Aug. 30, with the woman getting up to leave after Liu gets up, then following him out the door. The other video shows the woman holding onto Liu's arm as they walk to her apartment, where she says he raped her as she begged him to stop.

Liu, founder of the Beijing-based e-commerce site JD.com, was arrested Aug. 31 in Minneapolis on suspicion of felony rape, but prosecutors announced in December that he would face no criminal charges because the case had "profound evidentiary problems" and it was unlikely they could prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The woman, Jingyao Liu, a Chinese college student at the University of Minnesota, sued the businessman and his company last week. She alleged she was groped in Richard Liu's limousine and raped in her apartment after a dinner at Origami, a Japanese restaurant in Minneapolis, in which she felt pressured to drink as Liu and other executives toasted her. At one point, Richard Liu said she would dishonor him if she did not join in, the lawsuit says.

Richard Liu and Jingyao Liu are not related.

It's not clear who posted the videos, which were posted on Weibo under an account for Mingzhou Events. The clips are short and the content is edited, but Richard Liu's attorneys in China confirmed their authenticity. The videos do not contain audio, and they do not show what happened in his limousine or in the woman's apartment.

Jill Brisbois, Richard Liu's attorney in Minnesota, said in a statement to The Associated Press that the clips "further dispel the misinformation and false claims that have been widely circulated and clearly support the Hennepin County Attorney's Office decision not to file charges against our client."

Brisbois said the videos speak for themselves and show events as they are happening. While the woman has alleged she was impaired and coerced to drink, she appears to be walking without assistance and linking her arm with the businessman.

The law firm of Florin Roebig, which is representing the woman, said the clips that have been posted online, as well as the full surveillance videos, are consistent with what the woman alleged in her lawsuit and with what she told law enforcement. The lawsuit says the woman went to her apartment building with Liu to be polite and respectful, and believed he was simply walking her to the door.

The clip in Jingyao Liu's apartment complex shows Richard Liu and the woman walking through multiple lobbies and taking multiple elevators. Initially, Richard Liu's female assistant is with them and the woman leads the way. At one point, the assistant does not get on an elevator with Richard Liu and the woman, and when they exit the elevator, she has her hand through his arm and he has his hands in his pockets.

She leads him up a short stairway, then through another set of doors and continues to link her hand through his arm. As they get off another elevator, she leads him down a hallway to an apartment. She opens the door and goes in, and Richard Liu follows.

The other clip features surveillance video from the end of the dinner at Origami. It shows Jingyao Liu seated at a table with other men, and Richard Liu is a few seats away, appearing to have an animated conversation with others at the table. One man at the dinner party is slumped over and appears to be passed out. The woman is seen talking to the man next to her, and when Liu gets up to leave, she gets up and appears to follow him. They walk out next to each other. Video from outside the restaurant shows her leaving with Richard Liu and his assistant.

Richard Liu walks ahead and it appears the woman and Liu's assistant have a brief conversation, then she follows Liu.

Text messages previously reviewed by The Associated Press and portions of the woman's interviews with police show the woman alleges Liu pulled her into a limousine and made advances and groped her despite her protests. The lawsuit says Liu forcibly raped her at her apartment, again over her protests and resistance. She texted a friend: "I begged him don't. But he didn't listen."

The alleged attack happened while Richard Liu was in Minneapolis for a weeklong residency as part of the University of Minnesota's doctor of business administration China program. The four-year program in the university's management school is geared toward high-level executives in China and is a partnership with Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management.

Jingyao Liu is a Chinese citizen studying at the university on a student visa and was a volunteer in the doctorate program while Richard Liu was there. The Associated Press does not generally name alleged victims of sexual assault without their consent, but the Florin Roebig law firm has said she agreed to be named. She was 21 at the time of the alleged attack.

Richard Liu, known in Chinese as Liu Qiangdong, is a prominent member of the Chinese tech elite, with a fortune of $7.5 billion. He is part of a generation of entrepreneurs who have created China's internet, e-commerce, mobile phone and other technology industries since the late 1990s. The son of peasants, Liu built a Beijing electronics shop into JD.com, China's biggest online direct retailer, selling everything from clothes to toys to fresh vegetables.

HOUSTON (Reuters) – Chevron Corp on Friday pushed back at the potential for a rival to break up its $33 billion deal for Anadarko Petroleum Corp, saying the two companies had already begun meetings on a merger plan.

Occidental Petroleum on Thursday sought to scuttle the proposed deal, submitting a higher, $38 billion cash-and-stock offer for Anadarko. Anadarko’s board said on Thursday it would evaluate the new proposal.

“I’ll just remind everyone that we’ve got a signed deal that has been approved by both boards and we’ve moving forward with integration planning,” said Chevron Chief Executive Michael Wirth on a conference call with analysts. He said a “sizeable” group of employees had already met.

Wirth declined to say whether Chevron would raise its offer in light of Occidental’s higher bid. Chevron has the ability revise the structure of its 75 percent stock, 25 percent cash bid, Chevron finance chief Pierre Breber said on the same call. “We could put more cash in if that’s what Anadarko wanted to do,” he said.

LONDON (Reuters) – A London court case to extradite Arif Naqvi, founder of collapsed private equity firm Abraaj Group, to the United States on fraud charges was adjourned until May 24, a court official said on Friday.

Naqvi was remanded in custody until that date, the official said. A former managing partner of Dubai-based Abraaj, Sev Vettivetpillai, was released on conditional bail to appear again at Westminster Magistrates Court on June 12, the official said.

Under the U.S. charges, both men are accused of defrauding U.S. investors by inflating positions held by Abraaj in order to attract greater funds from them, causing them financial loss, the official said.

Vettivetpillai could not be reached for a comment.

Naqvi, in a statement released through a PR firm, has pleaded innocent.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alleges that Naqvi and his firm raised money for the Abraaj Growth Markets Health Fund, collecting more than $100 million over three years from U.S.-based charitable organizations and other U.S. investors.

Naqvi and Vettivetpillai were arrested in Britain earlier this month. Another executive, Mustafa Abdel-Wadood was arrested at a New York hotel, Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea Griswold said at a hearing in Manhattan federal court on April 11.

Abdel-Wadood appeared at the Manhattan hearing and pleaded not guilty to securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy charges.

Former Vice President Joe Biden announces his 2020 candidacy

By James Oliphant

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, in his first interview as a Democratic presidential candidate, said on Friday that he does not believe he treated law professor Anita Hill badly during the 1991 confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Biden had joined the burgeoning 2020 Democratic field a day earlier.

Biden’s conduct during those hearings, when he was chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, became a renewed subject of controversy after the New York Times reported that Biden had called Hill earlier this month in the run-up to his presidential bid and that Hill was dissatisfied with Biden’s expression of regret.

Appearing on ABC’s “The View,” Biden largely defended his actions as a senator almost 30 years ago, saying he believed Hill’s allegations of sexual harassment levied at Thomas and tried to derail his confirmation.

Activists have long been unhappy that Hill was questioned in graphic detail by the all-white, all-male committee chaired by Biden.

“I’m sorry she was treated the way she was treated,” Biden said, but later, he asserted, “I don’t think I treated her badly. … How do you stop people from asking inflammatory questions?”

“There were a lot of mistakes made across the board and for those I apologize,” he said.

Biden praised Hill as “remarkable” and said she is “one of the reasons we have the #MeToo movement.”

Asked why he had not reached out to Hill earlier, Biden said he had previously publicly stated he had regrets about her treatment and that he “didn’t want to quote invade her space.”

That seemed to be a reference to another controversy that looms over Biden’s presidential run: allegations by several women that he made them uncomfortable by touching them at political events.

Biden also addressed that criticism, saying he was now more “cognizant” about a woman’s “private space.” But he maintained that he had been “trying to bring solace.”

He suggested he was still trying to sort out the guidelines for his conduct going forward.

“I should be able to read better,” he said. “I have to be more careful.”

Pressed by the show’s panel for an apology to his accusers, Biden would not entirely capitulate.

“So, I invaded your space,” he replied. “I mean, I’m sorry this happened. But I’m not sorry in a sense that I think I did anything that was intentionally designed to do anything wrong or be inappropriate.”

Biden, 76, served as former President Barack Obama’s vice president for two terms. He is competing with 19 others for the Democratic presidential nomination and the chance to likely face President Donald Trump next year in the general election.

His first public event as a presidential candidate is scheduled for Monday in Pittsburgh.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Tesla Inc’s stock slumped over 4% on Friday to its lowest price in two years, rounding out a rough week that included worse-than-expected quarterly results and a pitch by Chief Executive Elon Musk on autonomous cars that failed to win over investors.

With investors betting Tesla will soon raise capital, the stock has fallen 13% for the week to its lowest level since January 2017, before the launch of the Model 3 sedan aimed at making the electric car maker profitable.

One positive development for Tesla: a U.S. District Court judge on Friday granted a request by Musk and the Securities and Exchange Commission for a second extension to resolve a dispute over Musk’s use of Twitter.

On Wednesday, Tesla posted a worse-than-expected loss of $702 million for the March quarter. Musk said Tesla would return to profit in the third quarter and that there was “some merit” to raising capital.

Musk is still battling to convince investors that demand for the Model 3, the company’s first car aimed at the mass consumer market, is “insanely” high, and that it can be delivered efficiently to customers around the world.

Tesla ended its first quarter with $2.2 billion, down from $3.7 billion in the prior quarter, and the company is planning expansions including a Shanghai factory, an upcoming Model Y SUV, and other projects.

(GRAPHIC: Tesla’s cash – https://tmsnrt.rs/2DyJjX6)

On Monday, Musk hosted a self-driving event, where he predicted Tesla would have over a million autonomous vehicles by next year. Some analysts perceived the presentation as a way to deflect attention from questions about demand, margin pressure, increasing competition and even Musk’s ongoing battle with U.S. regulators.

Tesla’s stock has now fallen 29 percent in 2019 and the company’s market capitalization has declined to $41 billion from $63 billion in mid-December.

(GRAPHIC: Tesla’s declining market cap – https://tmsnrt.rs/2Dwd62r)

Analysts now expect Tesla’s revenue to expand 19% in 2019, compared with 83% growth in 2018 and 68% growth in 2017, according to Refinitiv.

Following Tesla’s quarterly report, 12 analysts recommend selling the stock, while 11 recommend buying and eight are neutral. The median analyst price target is $275, up 16% from the stock’s current price of $236. Berenberg analyst Alexander Haissl has the most optimistic price target, at $500, while Cowen and Company’s Jeffrey Osborne has the lowest, at $160, according to Refinitiv.

Former CIA Director John Brennan pushed back Friday on President Trump’s charge that he knew about or participated in an attempt to overthrow the American government.

“I don’t think it’s surprising at all that we continue to hear the sociopathic ramblings of Mr. Trump claiming that there was this effort to try to prevent him from being elected or to unseat him,” he told MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson.

Brennan was reacting to comments Trump made during an interview with Sean Hannity on Thursday night.

Trump specifically criticized Brennan, along with former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former FBI Director James Comey, and former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, in the fiery interview.

ROSENSTEIN SLAMS OBAMA ADMINISTRATION FOR CHOOSING ‘NOT TO PUBLICIZE FULL STORY’ OF RUSSIA HACKING

His comments followed the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s report which stopped short of accusing the president of either obstruction of justice or collusion with Russia.

Brennan added he welcomed further investigation into his and other officials’ conduct while they served in government. “I’ve testified in front of Congress … Absolutely, I’ll do it again,” he said.

Brennan also disputed Sen. Rand Paul’s, R-Ky., claim that he “insisted that the unverified and fake Steele dossier be included in the Intelligence Report.”

Journalist Bob Woodward similarly promoted the idea that the CIA pushed to include the Steele dossier in the intelligence community assessment surrounding Russian election interference.

“That’s absolutely incorrect and 180 degrees from the truth. It was CIA that was pushing not to have it included and not to be taken into account at all in that intelligence community assessment.
