Group calling themselves the IRA claims responsibility for letter bombs in UK

A group calling themselves members of the IRA have claimed responsibility for sending letter bombs to three London transportation hubs and a Scottish university last week, police said Tuesday.

Police Scotland and the Metropolitan Police said in a joint statement that a media outlet in Northern Ireland received a claim of responsibility on Monday using a recognized code word.

“The claim was allegedly made on behalf of the ‘IRA’,” police said, referring to the Irish Republican Army, which has been in a cease-fire for years.

“Those claiming responsibility have indicated five devices were sent. At this time, only four devices have been recovered,” police said in a statement.

Police said they were already investigating possible dissident links to the packages.

The packages bore similarities to devices sent in the past linked to dissident groups associated with Northern Ireland-related terrorism, according to the Guardian.

All homemade devices – sent to the Waterloo rail station in central London, offices at Heathrow and London City Airports, and the University of Glasgow – had stamps from the Irish Republic and had Dublin as the return address. They also bore stamps issued by Ireland’s post office to mark Valentine’s Day.

According to the statement, counter-terrorism police are keeping an "open mind" but stopped short of blaming dissidents for the use of the devices.

Police said they have given extensive devices to businesses and the armed forces to protect against the further use of letter bombs.

In Nigeria, Boko Haram violence disenfranchises many voters

Mariam Musa gestured with her hand toward her mouth, twisting her face as she told of her main problem: not enough to eat or drink.

In the makeshift camp Nigerians who have fled Boko Haram violence, the 32-year-old widow says that the upcoming presidential vote isn't a topic of conversation. That's because nearly all are more worried about putting food on the table.

Lacking voter cards or afraid to trek back to their home villages where armed extremists may lurk, most of the 1,200 people in Malkohi camp are unlikely to vote in Saturday's presidential election.

"God help us," said Musa, one of many widows living in this makeshift settlement in Yola, capital of Nigeria's northern Adamawa state. "We have no salt, no palm oil, nothing."

Asked if she planned to vote, she smiled ruefully and said: "I hear there is an election, but I lost my voter's card."

Over 84 million Nigerians are registered voters in this West African country of more than 190 million. But in some parts of the north, where an insurgency by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram has killed more than 27,000 people and displaced millions, thousands likely won't be able to participate in the election. There are concerns about whether voting can take place at all in some areas facing arson attacks by alleged militants.

The northern extremist insurgency is one issue voters will consider as they choose between President Muhammadu Buhari, who was elected in 2015 on a promise to tackle insecurity, and Atiku Abubakar, a fellow northern Muslim and former vice president who similarly vows to restore security.

For northerners displaced by Boko Haram violence, there is little enthusiasm for the polls even as they hope the outcome will somehow lead to peace in areas plagued by armed violence.

At Malkohi camp in Yola, hometown of opposition candidate Abubakar, some 111 of them are widows whose husbands were killed in the violence. Four who spoke to The Associated Press ahead of the election said they won't be able to vote. They are still terrified of going back home amid radio reports of continued Boko Haram attacks. Their stories are often horrific.

Musa, whose husband bled to death after his hands were amputated by Boko Haram in 2014, pointed to the back of her foot where she was shot trying to retrieve her husband's body from the custody of Boko Haram fighters in the town of Gwoza, in the restive state of Borno.

Fati Umar, of Gwoza, said she was unable to bury her husband after fleeing a 2014 Boko Haram attack that came while she was cultivating her garden. For days she hid in the bush with her children.

Fafa Malam, also of Gwoza, fled her home with her children in 2014 after her husband was killed by gunmen.

A third woman, from the town of Madagali in Adamawa, has a child by a Boko Haram fighter who assaulted and then enslaved her for months following a 2014 attack that killed her husband. Two of her children were taken by the militants.

Boko Haram, which opposes a secular Nigeria, gained international notoriety in April 2014 when it kidnapped 276 schoolgirls in the northern town of Chibok.

Although Nigeria's government insists Boko Haram has been defeated, an offshoot of the group known as the Islamic State West Africa Province still carries out regular attacks in northern towns. Those attacks have piled pressure on Buhari, with many voters questioning his ability to control the insurgency.

Some 59,000 people have fled attacks by extremists since November, according to the U.N. migration agency. The U.N. refugee agency cites as many as 39 attacks in the states of Borno and Yobe last month, underscoring the threat posed by extremists even as the government claims success.

Nigeria's parliament approved a record $147 million for election security, but some polling workers in remote areas have rejected their posts in fear of being attacked.

Musa and others in Malkohi pointed out that there is no polling station inside the camp. Even if their voter cards were in order, they said, it still would be too dangerous to try to return home in hopes of voting.

"I hear on the radio there is still no peace in Gwoza," said Umar, a mother of four.

Like the others, she complained about persistent food shortages amid delays in the arrival of rations provided by the government.

The women trek long distances under a scorching sun searching for firewood, and sometimes they offer labor in the gardens of host communities in exchange for food, they said.

"Our only problem here is what to eat and what to drink," said Musa, who looks after five children. "If there is peace and there is no problem, I hope to go back home one day."

February 27, 2019

Upon further review, a technical foul called Monday night on Golden State Warriors center DeMarcus Cousins for shoe-throwing was rescinded by the NBA on Tuesday, multiple media outlets reported.

In the game against the Charlotte Hornets that the visiting Warriors went on to win 121-110, Cousins received the technical with 4:51 remaining in the fourth quarter after he threw a shoe belonging to Jeremy Lamb after it slipped off the Hornets guard’s foot near the free-throw line.

The shoe went out of bounds, and referee Brian Forte called the technical. Cousins, the 28-year-old big man who was out nearly an entire season before returning last month from an Achilles injury, tried to plead his case.

“Next time, I’ll just step on the shoe and roll my ankle, break it, tear an Achilles,” Cousins said after the game. “Just leave it out there next time. I guess that’s what they want. I’ll keep that in mind.”

When Cousins was asked why Forte hit him with a “T,” the ref had one simple takeaway.

“Basically, you can’t throw a shoe,” Cousins said.

Witnesses describe horrific mosque shootings in Christchurch

WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES

A tradesman who was driving past the Masjid Al Noor mosque where a gunman opened fire on hundreds of people inside has described the horrific scene that unfolded in front of them.

Carl Pomare told Radio New Zealand he saw “people running for their lives” and heard “rapid fire” from a semiautomatic weapon that sounded like fireworks going off.

“We saw these people hit the ground, they were being shot in front of us,” he said.

Mr. Pomare said he and others from Naki Labour Hire drove 100m up the road and formed a cordon at the southern end of Deans Avenue so other people could not enter the street before rushing straight to the victims to help.

He said with it taking 10 to 15 minutes for emergency services to arrive they had to spring into action.

“We saw them being shot. Being mowed down as they were running away,” he told Newstalk ZB.

“I said to my mate, ‘We need to do something’.”

He said they were nursing victims on the footpath amid the “absolute carnage”.

“There was one little girl, probably about five, she’d been shot, and her father,” he said.

“We managed to get the five-year-old on the back of one of the vehicles before the ambulance came, she was critical.

“We looked at it thinking we’ve got to get this little girl to the hospital now otherwise she’s going to die.

“My worker was nursing a guy who had been shot in the back three times for about half an hour, saying, ‘Hang in there buddy’. He passed away in my his arms.”

The contractors stayed for more than an hour, even when the shooter was still at large.

“The shooter came out chasing people running away,” he said.

“While my worker was nursing one of the victims there was more shots inside the mosque. It was a pretty scary situation because there were still other shots being fired at the time inside the mosque.

“We were very vulnerable but in a situation like that you don’t think about yourself.”

People who heard his interviews on social media described the men’s efforts as “incredible”.

‘THERE WERE BODIES ALL OVER ME’

Horrific eyewitness stories paint a disturbing picture of the behavior of the gunman who burst into one of the mosque’s in Christchurch and killed as many people as possible.

It’s still unclear how many people have been killed in sickening mass shootings at two Christchurch mosques, but those who saw what happened, say there was blood “everywhere” and described the gunman’s cold demeanor in chilling detail.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed at least 49 people have been killed at Al Noor mosque in central Christchurch and Linwood Masjid mosque. Another 48 people have been injured.

One person who saw the shooting at the Al Noor mosque described on Radio New Zealand what happened when the gunman entered the gates.

A former president of the mosque said a short man, wearing a helmet and glasses with his face covered entered the mosque.

He said the gunman was carrying an M16 or assault rifle with white writing on the barrel.

He asked the gunman “what are you doing?”, but added that “the man did not say a word”.

The gunman then opened fire at people as they took their shoes off at the mosque’s entrance.

He said five people were killed, including a five-year-old boy. He said the shooting lasted for about 20 minutes.

The eyewitness said about 300 people were in the mosque at the time. He said people tried to find places to hide and about 30 to 50 people were lying on the ground.

“Bullets were all around the shooter as he shot,” the witness said.

“All of them were shot down — all of them.”

“I’ve seen five people dead.”

He said some people were asleep during their prayers while others tried running.

One man at the same mosque told The Sydney Morning Herald he saw children being shot and added, “there were bodies all over me”.

The newspaper reported that one man escaped, only to see his wife lying dead on the footpath.

Another witness at Al Noor mosque with blood splatters across his shirt told AAP the shooter changed magazines seven times after opening fire as the crowd gathered to pray ran for the door.

“He went to all the different (rooms) and he shot everyone,” he said, saying he had laid under a bench to pretend he was dead.

Other witnesses described seeing several people covered in blood.

Several hundred people were inside and witnesses reported seeing at least four people on the ground and “blood everywhere”, according to Radio New Zealand.

Another man at the scene said it was chaotic, with as many as 40 people injured.

“I heard a big sound of the gun. And a second one, I ran. Lots of people were sitting on the floor. I ran behind the mosque,” he told TVNZ.

“The floor. There’s lots of blood on the floor, you can see when you go in.”

The man, who did not give his name, said he saw four people including a woman on the floor but did not see the shooter.

Christchurch schools, the hospital, and the city’s university are on lockdown and residents have been told to remain indoors and report suspicious behavior.

The Bangladesh cricket team, in Christchurch to play New Zealand on Saturday were in the vicinity and had been left shaken but uninjured, their coach told media.

At least one of the gunmen live streamed the shooting to social media, sharing the horrifying video to Facebook.

The chilling POV video, viewed by news.com.au and verified by Storyful, begins with a man in brown fingerless gloves driving through the streets of Christchurch towards the mosque.

Louisiana man gets jail time for threatening President Trump

A Louisiana man has been sentenced to three years and 10 months in federal prison for making threats against President Donald Trump.

The U.S. attorney's office in Baton Rouge says 63-year-old Henry Rayborn, of Baton Rouge, was sentenced Wednesday.

A federal complaint filed in March 2018 says Rayborn made threats against the president while hospitalized in Baton Rouge. Rayborn had been taken there after police found him lying down in a public street.

Court records say Rayborn told an investigating U.S. Secret Service agent that he "heard voices in his head saying kill Trump." Rayborn was later found mentally competent to face the charges. He pleaded guilty in October to making a threat against the president.

After serving his prison sentence he will serve three years of supervised release.

Charges Dropped Against Jussie Smollett

Prosecutors announced Tuesday they are dropping all charges against Empire actor Jussie Smollett, after he was accused of filing a fake police report and staging a hate crime against himself.

Following an emergency hearing, prosecutors said they are dropping all 16 charges against him. In all, he faced up to 48 years in prison.

Smollett, who is openly gay and black, claimed he was attacked on January 29 around 2 AM by two unknown assailants who beat him, shouted homophobic slurs at him, threw bleach at him, and placed a noose around his neck.

Two men suspected of the attack claimed to have been hired by Smollett to attack him and had purchased a noose, a red hat, and masks at his behest at a hardware store in uptown Chicago.

A judge overseeing the case granted a motion to seal details of the case.

An attorney for Smollett said he was vindicated after being tried and found guilty in the court of public opinion.

“Today, all criminal charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped and his record has been wiped clean of the filing of this tragic complaint against him. Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on January 29th. He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgment.”

“Jussie and many others were hurt by these unfair and unwarranted actions. This entire situation is a reminder that there should never be an attempt to prove a case in the court of public opinion. That is wrong. It is a reminder that a victim, in this case Jussie, deserves dignity and respect. Dismissal of charges against the victim in this case was the only just result.”

“Jussie is relieved to have this situation behind him and is very much looking forward to getting back to focusing on his family, friends and career.”

Smollett all the while maintained his innocence and stuck to his story.

State Attorney Kim Foxx’s office wrote they dropped Smollett’s charges after a review of the facts and his completion of “volunteer service in the community”:

“After reviewing all of the facts and circumstances of the case, including Mr. Smollett’s volunteer service in the community and agreement to forfeit his bond to the City of Chicago, we believe this outcome is a just disposition and appropriate resolution to this case.”

Chicago Police were reportedly blindsided by the news.

BERLIN (Reuters) – Wulf Matthias will not stand for a second term as Wirecard’s chairman in 2020, German daily Handelsblatt said on Friday, citing sources in the financial industry.

For age reasons alone this would not be an option for Matthias, aged 75, Handelsblatt added.

Matthias will keep his mandate until it ends in 2020, the paper quoted a company spokeswoman as saying.

Wirecard was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.

ZURICH (Reuters) – Shareholders approved Credit Suisse’s 2018 compensation report with an 82 percent majority on Friday, overriding frustrations expressed at its annual general meeting over jumps in executive pay during a year its share price plummeted.

Three shareholder advisers had recommended investors vote against Switzerland’s second-biggest bank’s remuneration report, while a fourth backed the report but expressed reservations about whether management pay matched performance.

The approval marked a slight increase over the 80.8 percent support garnered for the bank’s 2017 compensation report.

LONDON (Reuters) – Activist investor Edward Bramson is likely to fail in his attempt to get a board seat at Barclays’ annual meeting next week, even though shareholders are dissatisfied with performance of the group’s investment bank.

New York-based Bramson’s Sherborne Investors and the board of the British bank have been sparring for months over Barclays’ strategy.

Bramson wants to scale back Barclays’ investment bank to reduce risk and boost shareholder returns. Barclays Chief Executive Jes Staley remains staunchly committed to growing the business out of trouble.

After failing to persuade Staley to change course since he began building a 5.5 percent stake in the bank in March last year, Bramson hopes a board seat will rachet up the pressure.

Both sides have written to shareholders pitching their case and Bramson has courted investors in one-on-one meetings, although none have publicly backed him yet.

Interviews by Reuters with five institutional investors in Barclays suggest Bramson has failed to persuade them.

Sherborne declined to comment.

Mirza Baig, head of investment stewardship at top-40 shareholder Aviva Investors, said Bramson was welcome on the bank’s register but the boardroom was a step too far.

“He has created a lot of value at other businesses, but, generally, when he has come in as executive chair and taken full control. This would be a different case where he would just be one lone voice on the board,” he said.

A second Barclays shareholder said he backed Bramson’s goal of improving returns but via an “evolutionary” approach.

“If you look at banks that have tried to restructure their operations in investment banking – you look at Natwest Markets, Deutsche Bank – I struggle to think of an example where a roughshod restructuring has been accretive to shareholder value.”

A third, top-30 investor said he had been impressed by incoming Chairman Nigel Higgins’ grasp of the challenge in hand, and felt investors would give him time.

“Management know they have to execute and deliver improved returns… [Higgins] will continue to re-shape the board but obviously he didn’t feel that having someone with a diametrically opposed view on it would be helpful.”

A fourth, top-30 investor agreed: “We voted for the chairman to come in and it would be crazy to allow an activist to join the board (at this time).”

Jupiter Fund Management, the 24th largest investor, said it also planned to vote against Bramson.

Barclays has nearly 500 institutional shareholders, Refinitiv data showed.

Since Staley joined Barclays in 2015, the investment bank returns relative to capital invested have increased but are still underperforming the overall business.

Barclays’ first-quarter figures showed the investment bank posted a 6 percent drop in income from its markets business and a 17 percent fall in banking advisory fees.

Returns in the investment bank fell to 9.5 percent from 13.2 percent a year ago.

Famed for successful campaigns against smaller British companies in sectors from chemicals to advertising, Bramson’s board seat pitch has been rebuffed by shareholder advisory firms.

Institutional Shareholder Services, the world’s biggest, said Bramson’s proposal “falls short of what can reasonably be expected from a shareholder trying to address issues at a 28 billion pounds, systemically important bank”.

Glass Lewis also flagged concern about Bramson’s lack of banking experience and “questionable” shareholding structure, referring to Sherborne’s use of derivative contracts to hedge losses should its strategy fail.

Critics said the arrangement meant his interests are not truly aligned with those of other long-term shareholders.

British advisory firm Pirc, however, said it recommended that investors abstain in the vote on Bramson’s proposal as a challenge to the board to do better in the year ahead – or face a similar contest in 2020.

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.
