The Chinese military says 24 firefighters have been killed while battling a forest fire high in the mountains of western Sichuan province.

The People's Liberation Army's Western Theater Command said the deaths occurred after a change of wind Sunday as the firefighters were battling the blaze in a rugged area at an altitude of 12,500 feet.

A total of 689 firefighters were battling the blaze that erupted on Saturday, but contact was lost Sunday with 30. Two helicopters carrying medical staff were dispatched and two of the missing firefighters were found and confirmed the deaths of the others.

Missouri man charged with infecting woman with HIV, then offering to pay for her silence

A Missouri man was charged Wednesday for allegedly infecting an unsuspecting woman with HIV and then offering to pay her for her silence once police became involved.

Marcus Price, 36, is facing two felony charges and the possibility of life in prison after authorities say he had unprotected sex with a woman in March 2018 and failed to tell her he was HIV positive, The Springfield News-Leader reported.

The woman, who has not been identified, only found out she was HIV positive when she was hospitalized later that same month.

PENNSYLVANIA BOY, 4, DIES AFTER BEING IMPALED WITH GLASS SHARD

According to a probable cause statement obtained by The News-Leader, Price tested positive since at least 2010 in Illinois. The woman had been tested a few months before her encounter with Price and did not have and sexually transmitted infections at the time.

In addition to being charged with recklessly infecting another person with HIV -  a Class A felony which could carry a life sentence - Price is also charged with witness tampering.

Price allegedly offered to pay the woman with money he was supposed to get from another legal settlement if she promised not to cooperate with investigators, KHOU reported.

Democrat Joe Manchin Endorses GOP’s Collins in Maine Senate Race

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin endorsed GOP Sen. Susan Collins for reelection on Thursday, an increasingly rare instance of abandoing partisan politics as an election approaches.

Manchin, a moderate West Virginia senator, even said he would campaign for the vulnerable Maine incumbent.

That was a huge gift to Collins, who Democrats likely need to beat if they hope to take the Senate majority in 2020.

Manchin made his comments in an interview with C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” program that will air beginning on Friday night, Politico first reported.

Collins has out-raised a liberal crowdfunding effort to unseat her, thanks to out-of-state donors, according to campaign finance reports recently filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Collins' federal campaign finance reports filed Friday show she's raised $4 million for her 2020 re-election campaign. She's raised more than her three last re-election races combined and reports a $3.8 million war chest through March.

Collins has raised less than 1% of her funds this year from donors who say they're from Maine.

Much of her donors are based in New York, Virginia, Florida, Texas, Washington, D.C. and California, according to her reports.

Collins' biggest reported donors include political action committees tied to congressional Republicans, insurance company UNUM and consulting firm Deloitte. Her biggest individual donors include conservative billionaires Robert and Diana Mercer, who are also among President Trump's biggest backers.

The AP analysis of her campaign finance report shows about a third of Collins' donors gave $250 or less this year.

Such donors gave about 6% of Collins' $1.5 million haul from January through March.

No Democrats have formally announced they're running against Collins, who typically wins re-election by wide margins.

Progressives have raised over $3.5 million for a candidate to unseat Collins after she cast a key vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh was confirmed following contentious Senate Judiciary Committee hearings over claims from Christine Blasey Ford that he had sexually assaulted her while they were teenagers. Kavanaugh denied the allegations.

In the wake of the vote, a Burlington, Maine woman is facing federal charges of mailing a threatening letter to Collins' home in October. It was unsigned and accused Collins of having "betrayed the people of Maine."

Suzanne Muscara mailed starch to the Republican senator's husband, Thomas Daffron, with a letter that claimed to have been coated with "ricin residue," according to the affidavit filed in U.S. District Court in Bangor.

Muscara, who was arrested Friday, faces up to 10 years in prison. It's unclear whether she has an attorney to comment on her behalf.

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (Reuters) – Felix Auger-Aliassime won the battle of the young guns by beating ninth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 6-2 on Saturday to advance to the BNP Paribas Open third round.

The 18-year-old Canadian, the youngest player in the world top 100, fired an unreturnable serve on match point to defeat the 20-year-old Tsitsipas – who is the youngest player in the top 10.

While the outcome is an upset on paper, Auger-Aliassime held a 3-0 advantage over Tsitsipas when they met as juniors.

Next up for last month’s Rio Open finalist is either Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka or Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut, who play their second-round match later on Saturday.

American qualifier Marcos Giron battled back to down 23rd seed Alex de Minaur 1-6 6-4 6-2.

Playing in just his fourth ATP tournament, the Southern California native settled down after a shaky first set to dispatch the Australian.

The 25-year-old will be a heavy underdog when he faces either countryman Sam Querrey or Canadian Milos Raonic, two of the biggest servers at the tournament, in the third round.

April 9, 2019

Austin Meadows had a career-high four hits, including a two-run home run, and drove in four runs, and the visiting Tampa Bay Rays continued to match their best start in team history with a 10-5 win against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday afternoon.

Avisail Garcia had three hits and Brandon Lowe had two, each hitting solo home runs for the Rays, who improved to 9-3 while clinching their fourth consecutive series to start the season.

Rays starter Charlie Morton (2-0) went five innings, allowing two runs, three hits, striking out seven and walking three.

The Rays built a 4-0 lead after two innings, the same as they did in a 5-1 win against the White Sox in the series opener on Monday.

Meadows scored on a sacrifice fly by Lowe in the first for a 1-0 lead. The Rays have outscored their opponents 14-1 in the first inning this season.

Garcia, who played the past 5 1/2 seasons with the White Sox before signing a free-agent contract with the Rays in January, homered with one out in the second inning to make it 2-0. Willy Adames then walked and Meadows lifted a low breaking ball over the fence in right for his third home run of the season and a 4-0 lead.

Lowe hit a solo homer in the third to make it 5-0 before Chicago third baseman Yoan Moncada connected on a two-run blast in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 5-2.

White Sox starter Ervin Santana made his team debut, and the 36-year-old right-hander was aiming for the 150th win of his 15-year major league career. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings, however, allowing seven runs and seven hits with three walks and one strikeout.

The Rays chased Santana with two more runs in the fourth.

Michael Perez and Adames hit back-to-back doubles to make it 6-2, and Meadows then singled in Adames for a 7-2 lead.

The Rays scored another run on a wild pitch in the eighth before the White Sox added three runs in their half of the eighth.

Election observers say initial Thai vote count was 'flawed'

An international election observation group has issued a critical report on Thailand's first election since a 2014 military coup, saying the "tabulation and consolidation of ballots were deeply flawed."

The Asian Network for Free Elections says those issues led to the announcement of some preliminary results that were "wildly inaccurate."

It says the inaccuracies damaged the "perceived integrity of the general election."

Thailand's Election Commission has defended the count and said full preliminary results will be released Friday.

Tuesday's comments from the observers come as a military-backed party and the party whose government was ousted in the coup both claim they should form the next government.

Preliminary results show the anti-military party won the most seats, while the military party appears to have gotten the most votes in Sunday's poll.

A California man who allegedly fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight last month before fleeing the country has been returned to the U.S. following his arrest in Mexico on Wednesday, authorities said.

Julio Cesar Rocha, 25, of Montlcair, is accused of shooting his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend Thalia Flores and a second unidentified male victim March 21 around 2:45 p.m. while the two were sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of a discount store in Chino. Both communities are about 36 miles east of Los Angeles.

Flores died at the scene. The man, whose name was not released, walked to a nearby hospital where he’s recovering from his gunshot wounds.

Rocha allegedly fled the scene and remained at large for more than a month, the Daily Bulletin reported. He was formally arrested at 4:30 p.m. after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport from Mexico, KTLA-TV reported.

The suspect was booked at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on murder and attempted murder charges, the City of Chino Police Department said on Facebook.

Flores ended her seven-year relationship with Rocha just two months before her death and still lived in fear of him until that point, a sister of the victim, Bernice Flores, told the Daily Bulletin.

“He said himself so many times to other people, ‘If I can’t have her, no one will.’ ” Flores said, adding that her sister stayed in the relationship longer that she would have liked in fear that Rocha would hurt her or her family if they broke up.

Rocha was convicted on misdemeanor battery in 2016 and sentenced to 60 days in prison. He was originally charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, but the charges were lowered in a plea deal, the Daily Bulletin reported.

Rocha was later arrested and sentenced to 10 days behind bars for failing to complete the course.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”
