Brazil military takes up coup commemoration at Bolsonaro’s behest

By Brad Brooks

SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Brazil’s armed forces on Sunday paid tribute to a 1964 coup leading to a two-decade dictatorship, after far-right President Jair Bolsonaro – who argues that military intervention saved the country from communism – reversed an 8-year-ban on celebrations.

The move has stirred debate and underscored Bolsonaro’s support for a military government that executed hundreds, tortured thousands, shuttered Congress and left most Brazilians with dark memories of the period.

The military has not been allowed to observe the 1964 coup since 2011, when former President Dilma Rousseff, a one-time leftist guerrilla who was imprisoned and tortured under the dictatorship, ordered an end to events marking the date.

Brazil’s Defense Ministry said the armed forces will not hold public commemorations on Sunday. Bolsonaro is traveling abroad, but scheduled an event at the presidential palace on Friday to mark the anniversary with top military brass.

Bolsonaro, a retired Army captain, has long praised the 1964-85 military government and often said its biggest mistake was not killing enough leftists. Early in his political career he said on the floor of Congress that he was “in favor of a dictatorship” and that Brazil would “never resolve grave national problems with this irresponsible democracy.”

Like many in the military and part of the wider population, Bolsonaro considers the 1964 coup a saving grace. He has pointed to the collapse of the Venezuelan economy under its socialist government as proof the military saved Brazil from such a fate.

Instead of public celebrations, Brazil’s armed forces say they will hold internal programs and panels looking at events that led to Brazil’s coup, what happened during the military regime and the importance of the 1985 return to democracy.

Despite the more sober approach from the military, Bolsonaro’s public encouragement has dismayed many.

“By insisting on a celebratory tone, the president has once again shown that he is ambiguous about the democratic principles he claims to defend,” the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper wrote in an editorial this week.

“It’s evident he is more inclined to stir up the most extreme sectors of public opinion, who were among his earliest supporters in his presidential campaign.”

Federal prosecutors lashed out at Bolsonaro’s decision, saying in a written statement that allowing the celebration went against the president’s sworn duty to defend the Constitution.

“The 1964 coup, without a doubt and with no revisionist history, was a violent and undemocratic break of the Constitutional order,” the federal prosecutors’ office of citizen rights said.

While a majority of Brazilians look dimly on the dictatorship, some recall it as a time of order and relative safety, compared to the rise of violent crime in recent decades. Brazil in 2017 had 64,000 murders, by far more than any other country.

Fifty-one percent of Brazilians in a Datafolha poll published in October felt the dictatorship had left a negative legacy, while 32 percent said the period had been good for Brazil. The remaining 17 percent said they had no opinion.

The survey of 9,137 people across Brazil had a margin of error of 2 percentage points.

Brazil, unlike South American neighbors Argentina and Chile that also endured brutal, U.S.-backed military regimes during the Cold War, has never tried anyone for the murders, torture and other abuses carried out during its dictatorship.

In 2014, a Truth Commission report presented evidence that Brazil’s military regime had murdered or “disappeared” 434 political dissidents and tortured upward of 50,000 others.

But a 1979 amnesty law remains in effect, meaning that neither the military nor leftist guerrillas at the time have been held accountable.

FBI Moves Swiftly to Arrest Alleged Member Of United Constitutional Patriots Who Helped Catch Illegals

After hearing how the pro-American group the United Constitution Patriots caught hundreds of illegal aliens invading our southern border in New Mexico earlier this week, the FBI moved immediately to arrest one of their alleged members on a gun charge.

From NBC News:

The FBI on Saturday arrested a man connected with an armed group that has been detaining migrants in New Mexico, the state attorney general’s office said.

Larry Mitchell Hopkins, 69, of Flora Vista, New Mexico, was arrested for allegedly being a felon in possession of a weapon, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas and the FBI said.

[…] The FBI Albuquerque division said that Hopkins, who is also known as Johnny Horton Jr., was arrested with the assistance of the Sunland Park Police Department.

The FBI said he was arrested on a federal complaint charging him with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition. It was not immediately clear what the underlying conviction was.

The FBI said that no other information would be released until after Hopkins has his initial court appearance, which is expected Monday at 10:30 a.m. at U.S. District Court in Las Cruces. The FBI in its statement did not mention anything about an armed group stopping migrants near the border.

The FBI did nothing to stop Nikolas Cruz shooting up his school in Florida despite multiple warnings. They did nothing to stop Stephen Paddock shooting up concert goers in Las Vegas. They did nothing to stop Omar Mateen shooting up a club in Orlando. They did nothing to stop Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik shooting up Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino.

It only took them less than one week to arrest an alleged member of the United Constitutional Patriots for daring to try and protect our southern border.

This, at a time when illegal immigration and the border crisis has never been worse.

The Democrats in New Mexico and the liars in the media love saying these people have no “right” to protect our border.

First off, every indicator shows they already knew that. They simply asked these illegal aliens to stop and they did. They then called border patrol.

Odds are the border patrol just booked the illegal aliens they caught and released them throughout our country, as those are our laws now under President Trump.

The idea American citizens don’t have the right to protect their borders is laughable in itself and reflective of how backwards our society truly is. These illegals are invading our homes. We have a right to defend our homes with force and we have a right to protect our borders. Citizen’s arrests are a rich part of American history and they’re becoming more relevant than ever now that our government is refusing to uphold the law.

Never forget, the same government which claims the right to bomb every nation on earth preemptively and launch full-scale ground invasions of countries like Venezuela because we don’t like their leaders claims Americans have no right to defend our own border.

There’s a reason they’re hitting Hopkins with a gun charge rather than kidnapping. They didn’t actually do anything wrong.

That said, there’s a good chance the FBI and the authorities in New Mexico will move against them illegally and make up fake charges to persecute them with, as the FBI just did with all of President Trump’s campaign associates.

Our government is now operating under what the late paleoconservative writer Sam Francis called, “Anarcho-Tyranny.”

As Francis described it: “What we have in this country today, then, is both anarchy (the failure of the state to enforce the laws) and, at the same time, tyranny — the enforcement of laws by the state for oppressive purposes; the criminalization of the law-abiding and innocent through exorbitant taxation, bureaucratic regulation, the invasion of privacy, and the engineering of social institutions, such as the family and local schools; the imposition of thought control through ‘sensitivity training’ and multiculturalist curricula, ‘hate crime’ laws, gun-control laws that punish or disarm otherwise law-abiding citizens but have no impact on violent criminals who get guns illegally, and a vast labyrinth of other measures. In a word, anarcho-tyranny.”

“The laws that are enforced are either those that extend or entrench the power of the state and its allies and internal elites … or else they are the laws that directly punish those recalcitrant and ‘pathological’ elements in society who insist on behaving according to traditional norms — people who do not like to pay taxes, wear seat belts, or deliver their children to the mind-bending therapists who run the public schools; or the people who own and keep firearms, display or even wear the Confederate flag, put up Christmas trees, spank their children, and quote the Constitution or the Bible — not to mention dissident political figures who actually run for office and try to do something about mass immigration by Third World populations.”

Karen Pence insists Pete Buttigieg misunderstands her family’s religious beliefs

Karen and Charlotte Pence have responded to Pete Buttigieg’s comments this week challenging “the Mike Pence’s of the world” for believing homosexuality is a choice.

While on tour for their book “Marlon Bundo’s A Day in the Life of the Vice President,” the pair appeared on The Brian Kilmeade Show on Fox Radio Tuesday, where they defended their support of religious freedom and Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

The South Bend Mayor, one of 20 Democrats to throw their hat into the ring for 2020, came after his former Indiana colleague Sunday saying: “If me being gay was a choice, it was made far, far above my pay grade” and “that’s the thing that I wish the Mike Pence’s of the world would understand - that if you got a problem with who I am-  your problem is not with me, your quarrel sir, is with my creator.”

PETE BUTTIGIEG, THE MAYOR WHO WOULD BE PRESIDENT, SEES SURGE: 'IT'S EXTRAORDINARY'

Making a direct reference to her new book, Karen emphasized that Buttigieg was misunderstanding what the Pence family and other religious supporters believe.

“I think in our country we need to understand you shouldn’t be attacked for what your religious beliefs are and I think kids need to learn that at a young age that this is okay what faith people have, we don’t attack them for their faith.”

Karen defended her husband Tuesday by saying the two Indiana political figures, “really have always had a great relationship.”

PETE BUTTIGIEG NOW REGRETS SAYING 'ALL LIVES MATTER'

In 2015, after the Mayor came out as gay, the Vice President responded to the news with praise.

“I hold Mayor Buttigieg in the highest regard and we have a great working relationship and I see him as a dedicated public servant and a patriot.”

“I think it’s helping Pete to get some notoriety by saying that about the Vice President,” Karen told listeners.

Karen and Charlotte argued that the Mayor’s comments were going against what this country’s religious freedoms were built on.

“Religious liberty also means that you can believe in god or you cannot believe in God - you can believe whatever you want and you shouldn’t be afraid being persecuted for that,” Charlotte added.

Buttigieg has been critical of Pence in the past saying during a CNN town hall last month, “How could Pence allow himself to become a cheerleader of the porn star presidency?”

Fed’s Rosengren sees rate hike as possible next move: Bloomberg

Federal Reserve Bank of Boston president Eric Rosengren sees a rate hike as the U.S. central bank’s possible next move, according to an interview with Bloomberg published on Tuesday.

Rosengren described himself as “more optimistic” over the economic outlook than his colleagues on the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee. Rosengren has a vote on that committee this year.

If he turns out to be right about his economic forecast, he told Bloomberg, “it is possible the next move would be up” but if conditions deteriorate it is also possible that the next move could be a rate cut.

The interview was conducted on Friday.

Malaysia to begin delayed graft trial of former PM Najib next week

March 28, 2019

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – The corruption trial of former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak on charges linked to a multibillion-dollar scandal at state fund 1MDB will start next week after a delay of nearly two months, his lawyer said on Thursday.

The postponement was seen as a blow for the government of Mahathir Mohamad, which reopened investigations into the alleged theft of $4.5 billion from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) after winning elections last May and vowed swift justice.

Originally set to begin on Feb. 12, Najib’s trial was postponed because of appeals over procedural matters raised in pre-trial hearings.

It will now begin on Wednesday, his lawyer, Farhan Read, told Reuters in a brief text message.

Najib has pleaded not guilty to seven charges of criminal breach of trust, money laundering and abuse of power over a suspected transfer of 42 million ringgit ($10.3 million) into his bank account from SRC International, a former 1MDB unit.

The trial is the first of several criminal proceedings Najib is expected to face over the scandal, and the sum involved is a fraction of the $1 billion investigators allege made its way to his bank accounts.

He faces years in prison if convicted on a total of 42 criminal charges, most of them linked to 1MDB.

At least six countries, including the United States, Switzerland and Singapore, have launched money laundering and graft investigations into 1MDB, set up by Najib in 2009.

U.S. prosecutors say money stolen from the fund went to buy a private jet, luxury real estate, artwork by Picasso and Monet, as well as jewelry for Najib’s wife Rosmah Mansor, who has also been charged.

NYC's de Blasio: Amazon 'Couldn't Handle Heat in The Kitchen'

NYC's de Blasio: Amazon 'Couldn't Handle Heat in The Kitchen'

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday denied Amazon got “chased away” from a deal to build a headquarters in New York City — saying the internet retailing giant “couldn’t handle the heat in the kitchen.”

In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” de Blasio lamented that “the minute there were criticisms, they walked away.

“They couldn't handle the heat in the kitchen, is what it looks like,” he said. “But they let a lot of working people down in the bargain.”

“Let's be clear: No one [was] chased away,” he added. “This was Amazon's arbitrary decision. We had an agreement.  If I made an agreement with you, and there were issues that came up, but we had an agreement, you wouldn't call me in the dead of night and say, ‘Hey, we're taking our marbles, and we're going home.’”

He also said he doesn’t mind the flak he got from fellow progressives about a deal that would’ve given Amazon billions in tax breaks.

“It's a democracy. I have no problem with my fellow progressives critiquing a deal or wanting more from Amazon,” he said, adding: “There was a consensus in New York City. There were some people who stood apart. That's fine. That's democracy. I respect them. But Amazon just took their ball and went home.”

Yet de Blasio took a jab at progressives for not emphasizing “opportunity for working people.”

“We had a chance here to do something very positive for our city and for working people,” he said, adding: “The progressive movement needs to be about equality but also about opportunity for working people.”

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

Lakewood police tweeted there were multiple fatalities but did not give a specific number. Six people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released, according to the paper.

Lanes in both directions were closed and expected to remain so into Friday morning.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s a look at what you need to know today …

EXCLUSIVE: Trump says ‘Sleepy Joe’ Biden doesn’t have what it takes

President Trump, in a wide-ranging, exclusive phone interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, dismissed the launch of former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Biden, the president said, has name recognition but he won’t “be able to do the job.” When asked about Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Trump criticized his record, saying Sanders had “misguided energy” and asserted that Sanders “talks a lot” but hasn’t accomplished anything. The president referred to former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas as “a fluke” who had lost much momentum and outright dismissed Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg — although he said he was “rooting” for Buttigieg. (Trump could address Biden and the other Democratic presidential candidates when he speaks today before the National Rifle Association.)

The Democratic Party’s youth movement: Biden’s biggest challenge?
Former Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Howard Dean warned Joe Biden about the troubles he may face in his presidential campaign, especially from the “35-year-olds” who Dean says have been running the party — a clear nod to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and fellow freshmen Democrats. “This is a very different party than even the party Joe Biden ran in in 2012. Very different,” Dean continued. “A lot of people could win this race. There’s 20 people in there. I think it’s going to take $20 million to get to the starting line. If you can’t raise $20 million, you’re gone, and I think that’s going to take care of about six or eight of these folks. … But it is not the same party that it was five years ago.” A progressive political group that boosted Ocasio-Cortez’s bid for Congress last year vowed to oppose Biden and blasted him as part of the “old guard.”

More tales from the FBI texts
Text messages between former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page indicate they discussed using briefings to the Trump team after the 2016 election to identify people they could “develop for potential relationships,” track lines of questioning and “assess” changes in “demeanor” – language one GOP lawmaker called “more evidence” of irregular conduct in the original Russia probe. Fox News has learned the texts, initially released in 2018 by a Senate committee, are under renewed scrutiny, with GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley and Homeland Security Committee chair Ron Johnson sending a letter Thursday night to Attorney General Bill Barr pushing for more information on the matter. President Trump, speaking on Fox News’ “Hannity” Thursday night, responded to this report by accusing Strzok and Page of an attempted “coup.” “They were trying to infiltrate the administration,” he said.

Kim accuses US of acting in ‘bad faith’
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, fresh off his summit with  Russian President Vladimir Putin, said the U.S. has been acting in “bad faith” since his Hanoi meeting with President Trump over the stalemated issue of North Korean denuclearization. The North Korean leader told the Korean Central News Agency that, “the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the region is now at a standstill and has reached a critical point,” the Straits Times of Singapore reported. Kim warned that the situation “may return to its original state as the U.S. took a unilateral attitude in bad faith at the recent second DPRK-US summit talks,” the Korean Central News Agency added.

NFL Draft 2019: It’s all about defense
The first round of the 2019 NFL Draft saw a run on defensive players, with eight of the top 12 picks in Nashville coming from that side of the ball. After Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was taken first overall by the Arizona Cardinals, the San Francisco 49ers started a run of four straight front-seven players by taking Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa with the second overall pick — the highest draft slot for any Buckeye since left tackle Orlando Pace went No. 1 overall to the St. Louis Rams in 1997.
