British lawmakers reject 'no deal' Brexit, take step closer to delaying departure

British lawmakers on Wednesday took another step towards delaying Brexit, when it voted to reject the U.K. leaving the European Union without a withdrawal agreement -- just weeks before the country is scheduled to do exactly that.

The vote, on an amendment to reject a "no-deal" Brexit under any circumstance, squeezed by 312-308 and marks the latest defeat for the Conservative-led government a day after Parliament overwhelmingly voted down Prime Minister Theresa May's deal for a second time, just weeks before the U.K. is due to leave the bloc on March 29.

BRITISH PM THERESA MAY SUFFERS ANOTHER MAJOR DEFEAT ON REVISED BREXIT DEAL, AS CLOCK TICKS DOWN

The defeat is yet another blow for May, who has seen defeat after defeat for her approach to Brexit, plunging Britain into an even deeper political crisis -- with no immediate end in sight. The amendment that passed changed the language of a government motion that May had announced a day earlier that would have expressed disapproval of 'no-deal Brexit" but the language in the so-called Spelman Amendment goes a step further and rules it out entirely.

Wednesday's motion is entirely symbolic and does not change the situation on the ground that Britain will leave the E.U. on March 29 without a deal unless an extension to its departure is secured, or May's withdrawal agreement is approved by lawmakers. But it will lead to a vote on Thursday, in which lawmakers will vote on a motion to request that Britain's depature be extended until June -- but it is far from clear that the E.U. will grant such a request.

‘We live under a system of law, and a motion passed in Parliament does not override the law," Pro-Brexit MP Jacob Rees-Mogg told Sky News after the Wednesday vote. "The Withdrawal Act means we live on the March 29 under UK law and the Article 50 Act we means leave on March 29 under E.U. law.”

In the absence of a delay or a withdrawal agreement, Britain is scheduled to leave the bloc without a deal and revert to World Trade Organization (WTO) terms. Business groups and pro-E.U. politicians, including some in May's government, have said that a "no deal" Brexit would be catastrophic, leading to chaos at ports and shortages across the country. Some pro-Brexit lawmakers have called that such fears are overblown and part of what they have dubbed "Project Fear."

But on Wednesday before the vote, May's opponents declared her to be responsible for Britain's political uncertainty and said that she had lost the ability to lead the country through the choppy waters ahead.

“The prime minister’s deal has failed, she no longer has the ability to lead, this is a rudderless government in the face of a huge national crisis,” Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn declared in Parliament on Wednesday.

BREXIT VOTES: WHAT TO KNOW

Earlier, he called on her to abandon her red lines for a deal “and face the reality of the situation she has got herself, this party, this parliament and this country into.”

May, her voice hoarse and weak as she apparently battles illness, was defiant, and accused Corbyn of voting “in a way that brings no-deal closer.”

“I may not have my own voice but I do understand the voice of the country,” she said. “People want to leave the E.U., they want to end free movement, they want to have our own trade policy, they want to make sure laws are made in this country and judged in our courts. That's what the deal delivers, that's what I will continue to work to deliver.”

Corbyn, a day earlier, said it was time for a general election, after declaring “the clock has been run out” on May.

May was also under intense pressure from her own ranks, particularly members of the fiercely pro-Brexit wing of her party who helped vote the deal down over concerns about the backstop -- a safety net that would keep Britain in a customs union until a trade deal was agreed to so as to prevent a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

MACRON SAYS EU MAY BLOCK UK'S BREXIT PLAN: 'THE TIME HAS COME FOR THE BRITISH TO MAKE CHOICES'

Brexiteers have expressed concern that the lack of a unilateral exit mechanism could lead to Britain never actually leaving the E.U. or being forced to accept bad terms. May sought changes to the deal to assure jumpy MPs but it wasn’t enough to assuage Parliament on Tuesday, where her agreement was defeated 391-242.

May fought off a vote of no confidence in her leadership of the party in December, and in the government in January. But the latest rejection of her deal has seemingly refueled calls for her to stand down or call a general election.

“I think there is an issue that the Prime Minister is not capable of changing course, and that is catastrophic for the country and I think she should stand down,” Labour Party MP Liz Kendall said on BBC.

When asked about Kendall’s comments, Tory Party MP Steve Baker -- who previously called for her to stand down -- appeared to agree with Kendall’s assessment of May’s attitude but said that “given past events, I’d be well advised to say no more about it”

Pro-Remain Tory MP Nicky Morgan, meanwhile told Sky News that: “If votes today go against her I do think it makes her position very, very difficult”

Ahead of the vote on Wednesday, the Times of London reported that May, in an effort to face off another rebellion from her backbenches, was to allow a free vote on an alternative Brexit plan known as the Malthouse compromise --- named after housing minister Kit Malthouse who had forged the agreement between Brexiteers and Remainer MPs.

That compromise plan would extend Britain’s departure until May, and then place Britain and the E.U.’s relationship in a “transitional standstill” until 2021 to allow for a “no deal” Brexit if a trade deal was not achieved. But that vote was shot down 374-164.

Even if the E.U agrees to a Brexit delay, it is unclear what would change in three months to resolve the impasse.

The alternatives are a general election, for May to step down voluntarily (she cannot be challenged by her own party until December) and be replaced by another prime minister who would offer a different approach, a no-deal Brexit or a second referendum -- something that the Labour Party and other pro-E.U. parties have called for.

The Latest: Austrian leader slams anti-migrant poem

The Latest on the flow of migrants in Europe (all times local):

5:30 p.m.

Austria's leader is demanding that his junior coalition partner distances itself from a poem that compared migrants with rats.

Conservative Chancellor Sebastian Kurz told the Austria Press Agency that the Freedom Party's branch in Upper Austria province should "immediately and unambiguously" distance itself from the poem that appeared in a party publication in Braunau.

Kurz said "the choice of words is abhorrent, inhuman and deeply racist, and has no place in Upper Austria or the whole country."

The poem, which was titled "The Town Rat" and warned against mixing cultures, also drew strong criticism from the center-left opposition.

Kurz struck a coalition deal with the Freedom Party and became chancellor in late 2017.

Greek authorities say dozens of asylum-seekers have turned up at the home address of European border agency employees helping police the border with Turkey.

Police say 61 men, women and children who had just crossed illegally from Turkey headed straight for the rented flats of German and Dutch employees of the Frontex agency in the town of Orestiada before dawn Monday, and started ringing doorbells.

The migrants said they were from Syria and Iraq and wanted to register for asylum. Greek police were called to handle the process.

Police said it was unclear how the migrants found the Frontex employees' home address, and why they didn't go directly to a police station. Syrian and Iraqi refugees have little trouble securing asylum in Greece.

Hillary Clinton to join DNC's Perez at party fundraiser

Hillary Clinton is jumping back into the fundraising game, even if she's not running for president again.

The 2016 Democratic presidential nominee will join Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez later this month for a fundraiser in Washington as the party looks to take back the White House in next year’s election, a source familiar with the event confirmed to Fox News.

The event, expected to be attended by roughly 20-30 people, is being billed as a “dinner and conversation” and comes as Democratic candidates are ramping up their campaigns to challenge President Trump in the 2020 election.

HILLARY CLINTON SAYS SHE'S NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT

The news of the Clinton event comes a day after the DNC announced it will hold its 2020 national convention in Milwaukee – in a nod to the party’s hopes of winning back Midwestern working-class voters who voted for Trump in a state that Clinton famously avoided in 2016.

Clinton, a former secretary of State under President Barack Obama, has ruled out running for president in 2020. She previously lost the Democratic nomination to Obama in 2008 and to Trump in the general election in 2016.

"I'm not running, but I'm going to keep on working and speaking and standing up for what I believe," Clinton told a local New York news station earlier this month, but added that she is "not going anywhere."

"What's at stake in our country, the kind of things that are happening right now are deeply troubling to me. And I'm also thinking hard about how do we start talking and listening to each other again?" she said. "We've just gotten so polarized. We've gotten into really opposing camps unlike anything I've ever seen in my adult life."

Clinton has met with numerous Democratic presidential contenders over the last few months, including California Sen. Kamala Harris, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker. She also sat down with former Vice President Joe Biden in February, as he mulls entering the Democratic presidential fray.

Other Democrats Clinton has met with about the 2020 race include former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, an aide said. She has also spoken over the phone with Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Report: Bloomberg's Mayoral Emails Still Out of Public View

Questions remain about the availability of important communications from Mike Bloomberg’s tenure as New York City mayor.

The Daily News had reported in 2016 that Bloomberg’s emails from 12 years as mayor remained unavailable for public inspection. The Washington Free Beacon made a new effort to update the availability of the email during Bloomberg’s days as mayor.

The Free Beacon reported Tuesday that officials at the city’s archives initially acknowledged the its requests about the email issue.  However, they later stopped responding.

The Free Beacon noted that Bloomberg had relied almost exclusively on his own private email address and server when he was mayor. And the Daily News reported there was no law preventing elected officials from doing so.

The Daily News said access to Bloomberg’s emails could be sought by filing a request under the state’s Freedom of Information Law. But the process usually takes months and without any public records, it is difficult to know what to request.

Bloomberg is deciding whether to run for president in 2020. The Free Beacon said efforts to reach his spokesperson about the emails were unsuccessful.

Ohio cop forced women to perform sex acts for their freedom, federal prosecutors say

A Columbus, Ohio police detective was arrested Monday on suspicion of forcing two women to perform sex acts on him in exchange for their freedom, federal prosecutors said.

Andrew Mitchell, a 31-year-veteran of the Columbus Division of Police, is charged with three counts of deprivation of rights under color of law, two counts of witness tampering, one count of obstructing justice and one of providing a false statement to federal agents. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison.

“Mitchell, while acting under color of law, deprived victims of their civil rights, namely, the right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures,” a Department of Justice statement said.

Prosecutors said Mitchell, 55, kidnapped one woman in July 2017 and forced her to perform oral sex on him, according to an indictment unsealed Monday. In September 2017 and the summer of 2018, Mitchell forced a second woman to have sex with him, the indictment alleged.

Mitchell plans to plead not guilty on Wednesday, the New York Times reported. His lawyer, Mark Collins, told the Times they are “definitely looking forward to vigorously fighting this case at trial.” He said his client has been on restricted duty since his arrest Monday.

In a separate case, Mitchell is also being investigated in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman during a prostitution sting last summer.

Craig Shirley: Crazy Bernie, Rational Ron, and the Radical Chic of Socialism

Bernie Sanders was just the mayor of Burlington, Vt., in 1985, but this did not stop him from formulating his own foreign policy.

A video from that era is circulating among some Reaganites showing Bernie Sanders extolling the virtues of Fidel Castro, expressing empathy for the communists running Nicaragua, and castigating Ronald Reagan for all manner of things.

In the tape, Bernie also praised the radical Catholic priest, Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, a high official in the communist government of Nicaragua and -- hold your breath -- winner of the Lenin Peace Prize.

Pope John Paul II, an ardent anti-communist, admonished Brockmann for his choice of politics. But Bernie called Brockmann a, “gentle, loving man.”

At least Bernie was somewhat ahead of his time; now all liberals embrace collectivism, rebuke Ronald Reagan, and run up the hammer and sickle while striking the Stars and Stripes.

Fidel Castro once closed down local hot dog stands in the name of state socialism. The pin up girl for American socialism, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, wondered just the other day why Americans needed to have more than one hamburger a day. As if that was any of her business. Can you imagine the hue and cry if someone asked her how many designer eyeglasses she owned? Why, that’s nobody’s business!

In 1985, Bernie said: “If President Reagan thinks that any time a government comes along, which in its wisdom, rightly or wrongly, is doing the best for its people, he has the right to overthrow that government, you're going to be at war not only with all of Latin America, but with the entire Third World.”

Of course, Mayor Sanders got this wrong as almost all of Latin America embraced the Monroe Doctrine and rejected Soviet advances. He said Reagan “disliked these people” but Reagan disliked oligarchical collectivism, not individuals.

Reagan once quipped that Harvard was not the answer to juvenile delinquency. Neither apparently is the state of Vermont, who keeps sending this wretch back to Congress although maybe that’s the only way to get rid of him.

Bernie has never been alone in hating America and loving the collectivists of Moscow. Alger Hiss, infamous aide to FDR and Harry Truman, was a covert Soviet agent. When a young Richard Nixon exposed Hiss cold and sent him to jail for perjury as an enemy of the American people, the left hated Nixon.

The left also rallied to Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who stole the secrets to the Hydrogen Bomb and gave them to the Russians for money. They risked the lives of millions of Americans for 30 pieces of silver. Most Americans thought the electric chair was too good for these traitors.

Jane Fonda’s fondness for the North Vietnamese communists and loathing for America manifested itself in her touring the Hanoi Hilton prison during the Vietnam War, where an American POW slipped a note to her, but rather than giving the note to the American military, she instead gave it to his captors. They gave him extra rations of beatings for this infraction. The hottest place in hell has valet parking waiting for Jane Fonda.

In the 1980s, there was no shortage of Democrats willing to conspire with the thuggish Ortegas in Managua to defeat Ronald Reagan and his support for the freedom fighters, the Nicaraguan Contras. No less than Rep. Jim Wright, D-Texas, second in command of the U.S. House, was a willing lackey to the communists in Nicaragua. Bernie at the time called the communist Daniel Ortega an “impressive man.”

Of course, a recitation of traitorous liberals would be incomplete without citing the disgusting behavior of Ted Kennedy who made open appeals to the Kremlin to help them defeat Reagan for reelection in 1984.

Flash forward. Bernie just got a huge book advance with no plans to share it with the poor. Bernie is like other café socialists. They want you to share your wealth; they just don’t want to share theirs.

I, for one, am glad to see this dyspeptic old man running again for president. What greater recruiting tool do American conservatives have than Bernie? Really, his only constituencies are the charlatans at the Washington Post, liberal newsreaders on cable, the radical chic of Vermont, the Upper Side of Manhattan and the deep thinkers of Beverly Hills; these are the limousine liberals who love socialism in practice, just as long as they don’t have to soil their hands or empty their pockets.

Reagan versus Sanders? Give me a break. There is no choice. It’s like trading Babe Ruth for Bob Uecker. Not in the same league, man.

Besides, Reagan was fun, Reagan was an intellectual, Reagan was a winner, in everything he did and he believed that Americans could and should be winners too. And he won for America too, grinding the Soviets into the ground. Reagan believed in the privacy and dignity and freedom of the individual. Sanders and his ilk oppose all these things.

And that’s the real choice facing Americans. Who is going to take money out of your wallet and who is going to put money into your wallet? Who believes the American people are beholden to the state, and who believes the state is beholden of the American people?

For all his faults, Donald Trump’s conservative philosophy holds that freedom is for the autonomous. Bernie Sanders and his philosophy of socialism is for people to always be subjects of the state.

American conservatism is and always has been the intellectual philosophy. American liberalism is the anti-intellectual “irritable mental gesture.”

As the great conservative writer and philosopher Russell Kirk said, “From the moment I began to think, and the time I began to reason, I have always been a conservative.”

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani speaks during the inauguration of the newly-elected parliament in Kabul

KABUL (Reuters) – Afghan President Ashraf Ghani encouraged newly-elected lawmakers to participate in the peace process with the Taliban as he opened on Friday the first session of parliament since a controversial election.

Ghani has invited thousands of politicians, religious scholars and rights activists to an assembly known as a loya jirga next week to discuss ways to end the 17-year war.

Several opposition leaders have said they will boycott the four-day assembly in Kabul, saying it was pulled together without their input and is being used by Ghani as he seeks a second term in a September presidential election.

“We have presented the peace plan on a regular basis and we are committed to it,” Ghani said in the first session since parliamentary elections marred by technical problems, militant attacks and accusations of voting fraud last year.

“Based on this plan, there will be no peace deal and negotiation that does not have the green card of the parliament,” he added.

Officials from the United States and the Taliban have held several rounds of talks to end the Afghan war.

U.S. negotiator, Zalmay Khalilzad, has reported some progress toward an accord on a U.S. troop withdrawal and on how the Taliban would prevent extremists from using Afghanistan to launch attacks as al Qaeda did on Sept. 11, 2001.

The insurgents have so far rejected U.S. demands for a ceasefire and talks on the country’s political future that would include Afghan government officials.

The loya jirga, a centuries-old institution used to build consensus among competing tribes, factions and ethnic groups, is an attempt by Ghani to influence the peace talks and cement his position for a second term, Afghan politicians and Western diplomats say.

Amid growing political divisions in Kabul, opposition politicians have demanded that Ghani step down when his mandate ends next month, and give way to an interim government to oversee peace talks with the Taliban. Ghani has ruled that out.

The country’s top court said last week Ghani can stay in office until the presidential election in September.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein Thursday defended special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation while slamming former President Barack Obama’s administration for being slow to take action on Russian interference in U.S. elections and ex-FBI Director James Comey for telling Congress the agency was investigating collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

“Our nation is safer, elections are more secure, and citizens are better informed about covert foreign influence schemes,” Rosenstein said in a speech to the Armenian Bar Association, marking his first public remarks after the Mueller report was released, reports CBS News.

He also pointed out that the investigation revealed a pattern of computer hacking and the use of social media to undermine elections as “only the tip of the iceberg of a comprehensive Russian strategy to influence elections, promote social discord, and undermine America, just like they do in many other countries,” reports The Wall Street Journal.

The Obama administration also made “critical decisions,” including choosing not to publicize the full story about Russian hackers and social media trolling, “and how they relate to a broader strategy to undermine America,” said Rosenstein.

He noted that the Mueller probe began after Comey disclosed during a hearing before Congress that President Donald Trump “pressured him to close the investigation and the president denied that the conversation occurred.”

Rosenstein said two years ago, when he was confirmed, he was told by a Republican senator that he would be in charge of the probe and that he’d report the results to the American people.

However, he said he didn’t promise to do that, because it is “not our job to render conclusive factual findings. We just decide whether it is appropriate to file criminal charges.”

BEIJING (Reuters) – Britain must get to the bottom of the leak of confidential discussions during a top-level security meeting about the role of China’s Huawei Technologies in 5G network supply chains, British finance minister Philip Hammond said on Friday.

News that Britain’s National Security Council, attended by senior ministers and spy chiefs, had agreed on Tuesday to bar Huawei from all core parts of the country’s 5G network and restrict its access to non-core elements was leaked to a national newspaper.

The leak of secret discussions has sparked anger in parliament and amongst Britain’s intelligence community. Britain’s most senior civil servant Mark Sedwill has launched an inquiry and written to ministers who were at the meeting.

“My understanding from London (is) that an investigation has been announced into apparent leaks from the NSC meeting earlier this week,” said Hammond, speaking on the sidelines of a summit on China’s Belt and Road initiative in Beijing.

“To my knowledge there has never been a leak from a National Security Council meeting before and therefore I think it is very important that we get to the bottom of what happened here,” he told Reuters in a pooled interview.

British culture minister Jeremy Wright said on Thursday he could not rule out a criminal investigation. The majority of the ministers at the NSC meeting have said they were not involved, according to media reports.

Hammond said he was unaware of any previous leak from a meeting of the NSC.

“It’s not about the substance of what was apparently leaked. It’s not earth-shattering information. But it is important that we protect the principle that nothing that goes on in national security council meetings must ever be repeated outside the room.”

Allowing Huawei a reduced role in building its 5G network puts Britain at odds with the United States which has told allies not to use its technology at all because of fears it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying. Huawei has categorically denied this.

There have been concerns that the NSC’s conclusion, which sources confirmed to Reuters, could upset other allies in the world’s leading intelligence-sharing network – the Five Eyes alliance of the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

However, British ministers and intelligence officials have said any final decision on 5G would not put critical national infrastructure at risk. Ciaran Martin, head of the cyber center of Britain’s main eavesdropping agency, GCHQ, played down any threat of a rift in the Five Eyes alliance.

President Trump on Friday said “no money” was paid to North Korea for Otto Warmbier, after reports that the U.S. received a $2 million hospital bill from Pyongyang for the late American prisoner’s care.

“No money was paid to North Korea for Otto Warmbier, not two Million Dollars, not anything else. This is not the Obama Administration that paid 1.8 Billion Dollars for four hostages, or gave five terroist[sic] hostages plus, who soon went back to battle, for traitor Sgt. Bergdahl!” Trump tweeted Friday.

NORTH KOREA GAVE US $2M HOSPITAL BILL OVER CARE OF AMERICAN OTTO WARMBIER, SOURCES SAY

The Washington Post first reported that North Korean authorities insisted the U.S. envoy sent to retrieve Warmbier, 21, who was a student of the University of Virginia, sign a pledge to pay the bill before allowing Warmbier’s comatose body to return to the United States. Sources confirmed the bill and the amount to Fox News on Thursday.

Sources told the post that the envoy signed an agreement to pay the medical bill on instructions from the president, but a source told Fox News that the U.S. did not ever pay money to North Korea.

The White House declined to comment when asked on the bill, with Press Secretary Sarah Sanders saying in a statement that: “We do not comment on hostage negotiations, which is why they have been so successful during this administration.”

Meanwhile, the president added: “’President[sic] Donald J. Trump is the greatest hostage negotiator that I know of in the history of the United States. 20 hostages, many in impossible circumstances, have been released in last two years. No money was paid.’ Cheif[sic] Hostage Negotiator, USA!”

Warmbier was on tour in North Korea when he allegedly stole a propaganda sign from a hotel. He was arrested in January 2016 and sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor in March 2016. Warmbier, for unknown reasons, fell into a coma while in custody and was held in that condition for an additional 17 months.

North Korean officials did not tell American officials until June 2017 that Warmbier had been unconscious the entire time. He died less than a week after he returned to the U.S. North Korean officials, though, have repeatedly denied accusations that Warmbier was tortured, instead claiming that he had suffered from botulism and then slipped into a coma after taking a sleeping pill.

AMERICAN PRISONERS HELD IN NORTH KOREA ON THEIR WAY HOME AFTER POMPEO VISIT, TRUMP SAYS

Fred and Cindy Warmbier sued North Korea over their son’s death and in December were awarded $501 million in damages – money that the Hermit Kingdom will probably never pay.

While the Warmbiers blamed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump has said he believes Kim’s claims that he did not know about the student’s treatment.

Trump and Kim have met in two separate summits. The most recent, held in February, ended without an agreement on denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, told Fox News: “Otto Warmbier was mistreated by North Korea in so many ways, including his wrongful conviction and harsh sentence, and the fact that for 16 months they refused to tell his family or our country about his dire condition they caused.  No, the United States owes them nothing. They owe the Warmbier family everything.”

Last year, the Trump administration was also able to save three American prisoners held by North Korea. Kim Dong Chul, Tony Kim, and Kim Hak Song were all detained in North Korea. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo brought the three Americans home last May, and said they were all in “good health.”

Fox News’ John Roberts, Rich Edson, Nicholas Kalman, and Mike Emanuel contributed to this report.

SEOUL (Reuters) – K-pop and drama star Park Yu-chun was arrested on Friday on charges of buying and using illegal drugs, a court said, the latest in a series of scandals to hit the South Korean entertainment business.

Suwon District Court approved the arrest warrant for Park, 32, due to concerns over possible destruction of evidence and flight risk, a court spokesman told Reuters.

Park is suspected of having bought about 1.5 grams of methamphetamine with his former girlfriend earlier this year and using the drug around five times, an official at the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency said.

Park has denied wrongdoing, saying he had never taken drugs, and he again denied the charges in court, Yonhap news agency said.

Park’s contract with his management agency had been canceled and he would leave the entertainment industry, Park’s management agency, C-JeS Entertainment, said on Wednesday.

Park was a member of boyband TVXQ between 2003 and 2009 before leaving the group with two other members, forming the group JYJ.

A scandal involving sex tapes, prostitutes and secret chat about rape led at least four other K-pop stars to quit the industry earlier this year.

The cases sparked a nationwide drugs bust and investigations into tax evasion and police collusion at night clubs and other nightlife spots.
