2 seen in surveillance at Gerald Ford grave come forward

Police say two people suspected of defacing the gravesite of former President Gerald Ford and first lady Betty Ford have come forward and are cooperating.

Grand Rapids, Michigan, police say the results of the investigation will be forwarded to a prosecutor for review when it is completed.

Police released a photo of a man and a woman sitting on a wall on March 27. The man appears to be marking or digging into panels that say, "Lives Committed to God, Country and Love." The woman kicked her skateboard into the panels.

The Fords are buried outside a museum that is dedicated to Gerald Ford's presidency. He died in 2006. Betty Ford died in 2011.

Florida firefighters paint home of blind World War II veteran, 89

A blind World War II veteran's home was painted over the weekend by firefighters in Florida who decided to give back to the community in a special way.

William Velez, 89, and his wife were full of gratitude after dozens of members of the Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and their families painted their house on Saturday as part of an event coordinated with Paint Your Heart Out Tampa, a volunteer effort.

Volunteer Ken Forward told Fox station WTVT that it's natural for firefighters to give back to the community.

"To assist the community, to serve the community, and that’s what we’re doing today," Forward said, adding that Velez noted "he’s not able to get around and maintain his home the way he’d like."

Forward continued, "He told me he painted his home 17 years ago by himself. But now with his impairment, he can’t do it, so we’re here to help him."

In addition to a fresh coat of paint, fire rescue volunteers installed smoke detectors in Velez's home.

"Mr. Velez and his wife came out and met with us, and just to see his appreciation and gratitude is rewarding," he told the news station.

Kellyanne Conway: Trump ‘Deserves Apology From Millions of People in US’

The final report of special counsel Robert Mueller contained findings that didn’t “sound like Donald Trump” — including his lament that “my presidency is over” after the Mueller investigation began, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Sunday.

In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Conway mounted a vigorous defense of the president in the wake of a report that detailed 10 potential obstruction incidents.

There are other things in the Mueller report [that] don't sound like Donald Trump,” Conway said. “I have been by his side for three straight years. He's never said once ‘my candidacy is over,’ ‘my presidency is over.’

“What I want the viewers to understand what's in this report and what is not in this report. No criminal charges brought against President Trump. There will be no criminal charges brought against anyone in his family or connected to his campaign.”

Conway also said Trump “deserves an apology from millions of people in country including those who have a lot of power in this country.”

“The media as well,” she said. “… Day after day, story after story, we're leading the public to believe that there was collusion and criminal conspiracy.”

But she predicted that as a result, Trump will be reelected.

“People will look back at this week as another reason he gets reelected,” she predicted. “Mark my words, they spent 22 months, $25 million constantly beating the drum of collusion.”

Conway also dismissed criticism of the Trump administration by Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah.

“I thought that Mr. Romney missed a great opportunity this weekend to say one very important thing, which is, he was right in 2012 when he said to the whole world in a debate against then-president Barack Obama, the big geopolitical foe was Russia,” Conway said.

Comedian could unseat Ukraine’s Poroshenko in this Sunday’s presidential runoff

A comedian who plays a president on a popular television show who has no political background may unseat Ukraine’s deeply unpopular and pro-western president, Petro Poroshenko this Sunday.

The possibility of a political newcomer taking power at a time of upheaval in Ukrainian politics may make some in the West uneasy, but leaders have gained more confidence in Ukrainian democracy and are supporting free and fair elections no matter who wins.

Volodymyr Zelensky resoundingly beat out President Poroshenko in the first round of presidential elections on March 31, winning 30 percent of the vote compared to Poroshenko’s 16 percent.

The two will head to a second-round vote on April 21. A poll by the Kiev-based International Institute of Sociology ahead of Sunday put Zelensky's support at 48.4 percent, compared to 17 percent for Poroshenko and a further 17.9 percent undecided.

“Western leaders are a bit concerned but not to the level of opposing Zelensky for the presidency the way they opposed former President Viktor Yanukovych,” former U.S. ambassador to Georgia and Kazakhstan William Courtney told Fox News.

EXIT POLL SHOWS COMEDIAN LEADING UKRAINE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION: 'THE FIRST STEP TOWARD A GREAT VICTORY'

“Ukrainians have shown a healthy democratic tendency to support alternation in power.  On multiple occasions the opposition has won the presidency and power was transferred peacefully, one of the hallmarks of democracy,” Courtney added.

Since declaring independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukrainian voters have only re-elected a sitting president once and the outsider Zelensky stands a good chance of defeating the current president. Ukrainian civil society is very strong and voters appear ready to throw out yet another embattled incumbent.

Zelensky is running as a truth-telling change agent who vows to fight Ukraine's rampant corruption.

On his widely regarded television show, 'Servant of the People', Zelensky portrays a political novice who vows to fight the country’s corrupt elite. The real-life upstart presidential contender mirrors his character, and it helped turn his campaign into a politically viable one, although critics say he is light on policy.

“Zelensky has maintained maximum flexibility during the election time by refusing to be tied down to a particular program," Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute Mitchell Orenstein told Fox News. "He has made few detailed proposals or policy statements. We have no idea what exactly he will do.”

MAN ARRESTED IN LONDON AFTER 'DELIBERATELY' RAMMING INTO UKRAINIAN AMBASSADOR'S CAR, FORCING POLICE TO OPEN FIRE

On the most important issues facing the country, all candidates in the race took similar positions: combating rampant bureaucratic corruption, which has plagued Ukrainian politics for decades, resisting Russian aggression and interference as the deadlock in eastern Ukraine persists, and forging closer ties to the E.U. and NATO.

The election on Sunday comes down to the status quo and continuing the policies of the current unpopular president, or an anti-system candidate who represents a younger generation striving to rid the country of its widespread corruption.

“Zelensky will be elected to pursue a key element of the 2014 Euromaidan Revolution, to fight unaccountable and corrupt oligarchic rule,” Mitchell said.

The election comes at a time when Ukrainian governance is particularly weak and Russia still controls 7 percent of its territory.

Despite the candidate’s pro-western direction and opposition to Russia, neither Poroshenko nor his opponent has a coherent strategy for confronting Russia or retaking the territory lost to Moscow in 2014, events which catapulted Poroshenko to the presidency.

Poroshenko was first elected in 2014 following the Euromaidan Revolution that toppled the regime of former President Yanukovych, who abandoned closer ties to the E.U. after pressure from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

PRESIDENT OF UKRAINE PRAISES WAY TRUMP HANDLES PUTIN

Although Ukraine has made strides in fighting corruption since Poroshenko became president, it has not been enough to satisfy Ukrainians who are desperate for accountable leadership following the corrupt and authoritarian rule of President Yanukovych.

“Poroshenko failed to capitalize on a mandate from the 2013-14 Maidan Revolution to make deep economic reforms that could have improved people's lives, and progress in fighting corruption, such as by reducing the role of the state in the economy, including wasteful state-owned enterprises,” Courtney said.

Many in Ukraine feel the hopes and aspirations of the 2014 revolution were not achieved and blame Poroshenko for the revolution’s shortcomings.

Russia is also still trying to undermine Ukrainian politics and the democratic process, according to an E.U. watchdog group.

“Russia is not going all-out to support or oppose either candidate through active measures -- propaganda, disinformation, and subterfuge. But Russia is doubtless employing these techniques to send a message to whoever wins that it still has ways to influence politics in Ukraine,” Courtney said.

After the annexation of Crimea, Russian separatist forces in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions held a referendum in May 2014 to declare independence from Ukraine. They are the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.

Since Russian separatist forces invaded eastern Ukraine, the conflict transitioned into a stalemate and the regions remain controlled by Russian backed rebels.

March 20, 2019

By Maggie Fick and Cindy Silviana

ADDIS ABABA/JAKARTA (Reuters) – The world’s biggest planemaker Boeing faced growing obstacles to returning its grounded 737 MAX fleet to the skies on Wednesday, while chilling details emerged of an Indonesian crash with similarities to the Ethiopian disaster.

Experts suspect an automated system, meant to stop stalling by dipping the nose, may be involved in both cases, with pilots unable to override it as their jets plunged downwards.

The March 10 Ethiopian Airlines crash has shaken the global aviation industry and cast a shadow over the flagship Boeing model intended to be a standard for decades to come, given parallels with the Lion Air calamity off Jakarta in October.

The twin crashes killed 346 people.

(GRAPHIC: Ethiopian Airlines crash – https://tmsnrt.rs/2Hn6V4k)

Chicago-headquartered Boeing has promised a swift update of the automatic flight software for the craft but major regulators in Europe and Canada want to be sure themselves, rather than rely on U.S. vetting.

As Ethiopian investigators pored over black box data from their crash, sources with knowledge of the doomed Lion Air cockpit voice recorder revealed how pilots scoured a manual in a losing battle to figure out why they were hurtling down to sea.

Investigators examining the Indonesian crash want to know how a computer ordered the plane to dive in response to data from a faulty sensor and whether pilots had enough training to respond appropriately to the emergency.

Communications showed that in the final moments, the captain tried in vain to find the right procedure in the handbook, while the first officer was unable to control the plane.

“It is like a test where there are 100 questions and when the time is up you have only answered 75,” said one of the sources with knowledge of the cockpit recording that has not been made public. “So you panic. It is a time-out condition.”

At the end, the sources told Reuters, the Indian-born captain, 31, was quiet, while the Indonesian officer, 41, said “Allahu Akbar” (“God is greatest”) – an Arabic phrase to express excitement, shock, praise or distress. The plane then hit water.

U.S. “CREDIBILITY DAMAGED”

Boeing has said there was a documented procedure to handle the situation. A different crew on the same plane the evening before had the same problem but solved it after running through three checklists, though they did not pass on all that information to the doomed crew, the preliminary report by investigators released in November said.

Rowing back from previous reliance on U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) vetting, Canada and the European Union will now seek their own guarantees over the MAX planes, complicating Boeing’s hopes to get them flying worldwide again.

Regulators want to be absolutely sure of Boeing’s new automated flight control system, known as MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System), and that pilots are fully trained to handle it.

“Our credibility as leaders in aviation is being damaged,” wrote Chesley Sullenberger, a U.S. pilot famed for landing a jet on the Hudson River saving all 155 people on board a decade ago.

“Boeing and the FAA have been found wanting in this ugly saga that began years ago but has come home to roost with two terrible fatal crashes, with no survivors, in less than five months, on a new airplane type, the Boeing 737 Max 8, something that is unprecedented in modern aviation history,” he added in a scathing article on marketwatch.com.

(GRAPHIC: The grounded 737 Max fleet – https://tmsnrt.rs/2u5sZYI)

Facing such high-profile scrutiny, Boeing, one of the United States’ most prestigious exporters, reshuffled executives in its commercial airplanes unit to focus on the crash fallout.

VOICE RECORDINGS

The FAA noted in a statement that its “robust processes” and “full collaboration with the aviation community” were key to safety worldwide. The regulator is due to have a new head soon, likely to be former Delta Air Lines executive Steve Dickson.

U.S. President Donald Trump had apparently been considering his longtime personal pilot, John Dunkin, before leaning toward Dickson who had a 27-year career at Delta.

In Ethiopia, which is leading the investigation, experts were poring over the in-flight recording of Captain Yared Getachew and First Officer Ahmednur Mohammed’s voices.

As with the Indonesia flight, they radioed control problems shortly after take-off and sought to turn back, struggling to get their plane on track before it hit a field. However, there is no proven link and experts emphasize that every accident is a unique chain of human and technical factors.

For now, though, more than 300 MAX aircraft are grounded round the world, and deliveries of nearly 5,000 more – worth well over $500 billion – are on hold.

Development of the 737 MAX, which offers cost savings of about 15 percent on fuel, began in 2011 after the successful launch by its main rival of the Airbus A320neo. The 737 MAX entered service in 2017 after six years of preparation.

An investigating judge on Friday extended by two weeks the detention of a man suspected of killing three passengers on a tram in the central Dutch city of Utrecht and seriously wounding three more, in what is being investigated as a likely terror attack.

Court spokeswoman Els de Stigter said that a judge ordered the suspect, identified by police as 37-year-old Gokmen Tanis, to remain in custody for a further 14 days as investigations continue.

In a statement, the court said that the judge ruled that "the suspicion is strong enough to detain the man for longer."

Tanis was arrested hours after the tram shooting Monday and police say he is being held on charges including multiple murder or manslaughter with terrorist intent.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said trade talks with China are going very well, as the world’s two largest economies seek to end talks with a trade agreement to defuse tensions.

Trump said on Thursday he would soon host China’s President Xi Jinping at the White House.

Earlier this week, the White House said that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer would travel to Beijing for more talks on a trade dispute marked by tit-for-tat tariffs between the two countries.

MOSCOW/MINSK (Reuters) – Russia is confident it can soon resolve a problem of polluted Russian oil contaminating a major pipeline serving Europe and affecting supplies as far west as Germany, a senior official said on Friday at talks with importers about the issue.

Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin did not give a precise timeframe but Moscow has previously said it would pump clean oil to the border with Belarus from April 29, seeking to end a crisis hitting the world’s second-largest crude exporter.

Sorokin was speaking at talks with officials from Belarus, Poland and Ukraine in Minsk on the issue. Belarus said the issue had cost it $100 million, while analysts say alternative supply routes for refiners cannot fully fill the gap.

Poland, Germany, Ukraine and Slovakia have suspended imports of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline. Halting those supplies has knock-on effects further along the network.

The problem arose last week when an unidentified Russian producer contaminated oil with high levels of organic chloride used to boost oil output but which must be separated before shipment as it can destroy refining equipment.

Russia’s Energy Ministry said pipeline monopoly Transneft and other Russian companies had a plan to mitigate the effects of the contaminated oil. It did not give details.

Russian officials have said contaminated oil has already been pumped into storage in Russia and Friday’s talks would focus on how to partially withdraw the tainted crude from the Druzhba pipeline running via other countries.

The suspension cuts off a major supply route for Polish refineries owned by Poland’s PKN Orlen and Grupa Lotos, as well as plants in Germany owned by Total, Shell, Eni and Rosneft.

Some refiners have outlined plans for alternative supplies, but analysts say other routes cannot meet the shortfall.

OIL PRICES

Ukraine’s Ukrtransnafta suspended the transit of oil through the pipeline on Thursday, closing supplies via Druzhba’s southern route to Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

The pipeline issue, which has supported global oil prices, lifted Russian Urals crude differentials to an all-time high on Thursday.

With pipeline supplies to Europe shut, Russia faces a challenge of how to divert about 1 million barrels per day (bpd) that was meant to be shipped through the network to other destinations at the time when export capacity is at its limits.

State-run Russian Railways held talks with energy firms on using up to 5,000 rail tankers to transport crude, RIA news agency reported on Friday.

Concerns about the quality of Urals crude also caused delays in loadings at the Baltic port of Ust-Luga, when buyers refused to lift cargoes, resulting in a brief shutdown of the port on Wednesday and Thursday. An Ust-Luga official and traders said on Friday loadings had resumed.

Russian loading plans indicate it aims to boost Urals exports in May before the expiry of a deal on output cuts agreed with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, Reuters calculations and Energy Ministry data show.

The provisional loading plan for Russia’s Baltic Sea ports and Novorossiisk in May show exports rising to 10.7 million tonnes, the highest level in half a decade.

Minsk estimated its loss from lower oil product exports due to contaminated Russian oil at around $100 million, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported on Thursday, citing Belarusian state oil company Belneftekhim.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, in charge of government energy policy, said this week that those found responsible for contaminating the oil could be fined. He did not provide names.

(Reuters) – India has once again delayed the implementation of higher tariffs on some goods imported from the United States to May 15, a government official said on Friday.

The new tariff structure was to come into force from May 2, the spokeswoman said without citing reasons for the delay.

Angered by Washington’s refusal to exempt it from new steel and aluminum tariffs, New Delhi decided in June last year to raise the import tax from Aug. 4 on some U.S. products including almonds, walnuts and apples.

But since then, New Delhi has repeatedly delayed the implementation of the new tariff.

Trade friction between India and the U.S. has escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans earlier this year to end preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry for up to $5.6 billion worth of its exports to the United States.

In a further blow, U.S. on Monday demanded buyers of Iranian oil stop purchases by May or face sanctions, ending six months of waivers which allowed Iran’s eight biggest buyers including India to continue importing limited volumes.

One of Joe Biden’s newly-hired senior advisers has seemingly had a very recent change of heart.

Symone Sanders, a prominent Democratic strategist and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., staffer in 2016, was announced as one of the big-name members of Team Biden on Thursday.

But Sanders, who has also served as a CNN contributor, is seen in resurfaced footage from November 2016 expressing her opposition to a white person leading her party after Donald Trump’s election.

“In my opinion, we don’t need white people leading the Democratic party right now,” Sanders told host Brianna Keilar during a discussion on Howard Dean potentially becoming DNC chairman.

BIDEN HIRES FORMER BERNIE SANDERS’ SPOKESPERSON AS SENIOR ADVISER

“The Democratic party is diverse, and it should be reflected as so in leadership and throughout the staff, at the highest levels. From the vice chairs to the secretaries all the way down to the people working in the offices at the DNC,” she said.

Sanders wrapped up her remarks by saying: “I want to hear more from everybody. I want to hear from the millennials and the brown folks.”

Footage of the interview was resurfaced by RealClearPolitics.

After news of her hiring broke on Thursday, Sanders backed her new boss on Twitter.

TRUMP ASSESSES 2020 DEMS; TAKES SWIPES AT BIDEN, SANDERS; DISMISSES HARRIS, O’ROURKE; SAYS HE’S ROOTING FOR BUTTIGIEG

“@JoeBiden & @DrBiden are a class act. Over the course of this campaign, Vice President Biden is going to make his case to the American ppl. He won’t always be perfect, but I believe he will get it right,” she wrote.

The hiring of Sanders has been viewed as another indication of the expected tough fight that Biden and Sanders are in for as the two frontrunners battle a deep Democratic field.

While Sanders himself didn’t torch Biden as he jumped into the race, it’s clear that many of his progressive supporters view the former vice president as a threat.

Biden’s entry into the race – at least in the early going – sets up a battle between himself and Sanders, who thanks to his fierce fight with eventual nominee Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic nomination, enjoys name ID on the level of the former vice president.

BIDEN VOWS THAT ‘AMERICA IS COMING BACK,’ SPARKING ‘MAGA’ COMPARISONS

Justice Democrats — who also called Biden “out-of-touch” – is an increasingly influential group among the left of the party. They’ve championed progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York as well as Sanders. The group was founded by members of Sanders 2016 presidential campaign.

Biden has pushed back against the perception that he’s a moderate in a party that’s increasingly moving to the left. Earlier this month he described himself as an “Obama-Biden Democrat.”

And Biden said he’d stack his record against “anybody who has run or who is running now or who will run.”

Former Democratic National Committee chair Donna Brazile – a Fox News contributor – highlighted that “Joe Biden can occupy his own lane in large part because he’s earned it. He’s earned the right to call himself whatever.”

But she emphasized that “elections are not about the past, they’re about the future…I do believe he has the right ingredients. The question is can he find enough people to help him stir the pot.”
