Trump urges Fed to lower U.S. interest rates

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on Friday the U.S. Federal Reserve should lower interest rates, noting that newly released jobs numbers showed the economy had performed well but adding that action by the central bank had really slowed down the economy.

The Fed raised interest rates four times last year, and Trump has been a vocal and strident critic of the rate hikes under Jerome Powell, whom the president picked two years ago to chair the U.S. central bank. Trump’s other Fed appointees have also supported the rate hikes.

On Thursday, Trump said he plans to nominate his political ally Herman Cain, the former head of Godfather’s Pizza, to one of two vacancies on the Fed’s seven-member Board of Governors.

Two weeks ago, Trump said he would nominate conservative economic commentator Stephen Moore to the other vacant seat on the Fed’s board. Moore is also a longtime Trump ally who has joined him in criticizing last year’s rate hikes.

Woolsey to Newsmax TV: Brennan's Trump Treason Claim Like '13th Chime of a Clock'

Former CIA director James Woolsey said unfounded claims by former members of the intelligence community that President Donald Trump is guilty of conspiring with the Russians is as perplexing as a clock chiming for a 13th time.

Woolsey was on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now" Wednesday night and was asked specifically about former CIA director John Brennan, who has insisted for two years that Trump colluded with the Russians. It was unveiled last weekend that special counsel Robert Mueller came to the opposite conclusion.

"I think it hurts generally when you accuse someone of something as serious as essentially aide and comfort to the enemy of the United States, and you don't have any evidence to that effect," Woolsey said. "And then it turns out, as it looks right now, they don't have evidence.

"That's like the 13th chime of a clock. It's bizarre in and of itself, and it calls into question everything from the same source."

Woolsey added that Trump's repeated criticisms of the late Sen. John McCain are also similar to a clock's extra tone, and then added that Americans should return to using facts as supporting evidence for discussion, rather than opinions.

"I wish we could have a more civil and fair-minded and evidence-based statement of people's objectives and policies, rather than the kind of thing we saw, falsely apparently, claiming treason," he said.

Leftists Call For ‘Modern Roof’ On Notre Dame That Conservatives ‘Will Hate’

Leftists have begun calling for the destroyed Notre Dame cathedral’s roof to be rebuilt with a modern “brand new design” to upset conservatives.

In an article entitled Give Notre Dame a Modern Roof the Alt-Right Will Hate, Daily Beast writer Erika Harlitz-Kern claimed Notre Dame represents a part of “white” Western Civilization, and therefore must be altered to reflect a global society.

“If you ask me, in honor of Notre Dame’s history, the new roof needs to be a brand new design, representative of today and not of the past,” Harlitz-Kern wrote Friday.

“In the eyes of those who promote the ideas of Western civilization and so-called Judeo-Christian values, the Middle Ages stand out as the ideal time period when Europe was a white society united in a homogenous Christian culture led by one single Christian institution.”

Harlitz-Kern said Western Civilization is actually not a European phenomenon, but the result of global influences.

“Such a view of the Middle Ages is inaccurate. In fact, what is considered to be European culture, in the past and today, is an amalgamation of impulses from all over the world.”

She then praised French President Emmanuel Macron’s government for holding a globalist competition for architects to present their modern design ideas for Notre Dame’s roof and spire.

“An acknowledgement of Notre Dame as the result of worldwide impulses across the centuries can be found in the French government’s decision to put out a global call for architects to participate in a competition to rebuild Notre Dame,” she wrote.

Prime Minister Édouard Philippe said the competition presents an “evolution of heritage” should they decide to modernize the 850-year-old church.

“The international competition will allow us to ask the question of whether we should even recreate the spire as it was conceived by Viollet-le-Duc,” Philippe said. “Or, as is often the case in the evolution of heritage, whether we should endow Notre Dame with a new spire. This is obviously a huge challenge, a historic responsibility.”

French conservatives, such as Marine Le Pen, expressed their outrage at the French government’s plan to modernize Notre Dame.

“Hands off Notre Dame!” she tweeted in French Thursday.

The left’s calls to alter Notre Dame shouldn’t be a surprise given they have no respect for history, especially if it’s related to “white” history, as evidenced by their desire to tear down Confederate statues, and even monuments of America’s founders like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.

Twitter:

Although many people were recorded celebrating the Notre Dame fire online, the MSM is pushing the false narrative that conservatives are creating fake news. Paul Joseph Watson reveals the truth according to the facts as they unfolded.

Community College board backs instructor over visa

A beloved chemistry teacher from India just took his first giant step toward staying in the United States.

Blue Mountain Community College chemistry instructor Chandra Kunapareddy got the answer he sought at the last of three special BMCC Board of Education meetings.

Community college board of education meetings aren't usually riveting, high-suspense affairs. However, the trio of standing-room-only special board meetings in the last week featured both angst and passion.

Kunapareddy, 36, faced the expiration in 2020 of his H-1B visa, a document that allows U.S. employers to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require intellectual or technical expertise. The chemistry instructor grew up in a village in southern India, born into a caste of farm workers. None of his family except him has gone past middle school.

In 2017, when Kunapareddy started his job, the college officially notified him that the visa assistance was a one-time deal. On April 17 at the first meeting, the instructor asked for a change in course. He said he loved his job, his student evaluations were stellar and he hoped to raise his children here.

Would the college consider helping him renew the visa and start the green card process?

Board members listened as a string of faculty and students took the microphone to praise Kunapareddy as a personable, qualified instructor with the gift of making the sometimes dry subject of chemistry come alive.

More than one person got emotional as they spoke.

At the second meeting on April 18, board members wrestled with the pros and cons as they decided how to vote.

Jane Hill and Kim Puzey favored helping Kunapareddy, while Chair Chris Brown, Heidi Van Kirk and Anthony Turner worried about overturning the 2017 decision and fretted about an additional financial obligation during tight budget times. Bob Savage straddled the middle line.

The board considered four options ranging from not renewing at all to renewing and helping Kunapareddy navigate the green card process.

The price tag for BMCC is somewhere in the neighborhood of $25,000 and is the same for Kunapareddy. Puzey initially suggested that the faculty consider raising funds necessary to pay the college's portion, making any financial objection moot. He offered to throw in $1,000 of his own money.

Vice President of Administrative Services Tammy Parker, who researched the process, quickly quashed the notion as an employer must pay its half of the fees without outside funds according to law.

Mired in complexities, the board opted to push off the decision again until board member Don Rice returned from abroad.

At the third meeting, the boardroom again filled up, this time with members of the public joining in.

Former state veterinarian Andrew Clark stepped to the microphone. Clark, who said he had taken 13 terms of chemistry en route to his veterinary degree, called a good chemistry teacher "a treasure to be nurtured."

Van Kirk, who originally voted against assisting Kunapareddy, moved to start the green card process immediately and renew the visa.

She, Kunapareddy, Rice, Parker, Vice President of Instruction John Field and Science Department Chair Philip Schmitz had met the day before as a work group to discuss the way forward and Van Kirk had modified her position.

Hill seconded Van Kirk's motion.

Puzey verbalized his support. Though the school would enter uncharted territory, it is a path worth traveling, he said.

"I just want to keep this incredible person on our faculty," Puzey said.

The vote was six-to-one, with Brown voting no.

The whole thing could backfire for Kunapareddy. His position must be advertised again to make sure there are no American applicants more qualified to fill his job. If another applicant beats out Kunapareddy, he could be headed back to India.

That gives him pause as he realizes the selection committee determines his future, but he focused on the big step forward.

"I'm really thankful. Lots of gratitude," Kunapareddy said.

"I'm willing to pay it back with my teaching."

Wild ponies corralled after visitors ignore warnings

Wild ponies living on Virginia's Eastern Shore have been corralled because visitors ignored warnings against approaching the animals.

The Daily Times of Salisbury, Maryland, reported last week that the warnings were ignored at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. The ponies were moved to the south corral of Assateague Island.

The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company owns and cares for the Virginia pony herds on Assateague Island. Spokeswoman Denise Bowden said they've tried numerous times to educate the public. She warned that one kick or bite from one of the animals could badly injure someone.

The ponies will be corralled until the spring roundup April 12-13. That's when the ponies get a health check and authorities see if any new foals have been born.

PARIS (Reuters) – Clashes broke out between some demonstrators and police in Paris on the 23rd Saturday of yellow-vest protests after authorities warned that rioters could return to the French capital to spark a new wave of violence.

Dozens of black-hooded demonstrators threw rocks at police forces in the center of French capital, according to Reuters TV footage. Trash cans and a several scooters were also set ablaze.

Police responded by firing tear gas and stun grenades. Some officers also marched toward demonstrators to control the crowd and funnel it to Paris’ Place de la Republique, where they were authorized to demonstrate.

Joe Lieberman: Despite Some, Dems 'Not an Anti-Jewish Party'

Democrats are not unilaterally "an anti-Jewish party," but some of their members "are saying explicitly anti-Semitic things," according to former Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., a once Democrat.

"The Democratic Party is not an anti-Jewish party, but there are some people in the party now, including in Congress as we've seen from Congresswoman [Rep. Ilhan] Omar [D-Minn.] . . . who are saying explicitly anti-Semitic things," Lieberman, who is Jewish, told "The Cats Roundtable" on 970 AM-N.Y., per The Hill.

Rep. Omar has spoken out against pro-Israel groups, claiming U.S. lawmakers had dual loyalties, which draw a rebuke from many and led Democrats to pass an anti-hate resolution that was rejected by 23 Republicans for being "watered-down" and not going far enough to single out anti-Semitism or Rep. Omar.

President Donald trump then accused Democrats of being "anti-Jewish," later pushing for Jewish voters to leave the party and vote Republican.

The president tweeted Friday morning:

"The 'Jexodus' movement encourages Jewish people to leave the Democrat Party. Total disrespect! Republicans are waiting with open arms. Remember Jerusalem (U.S. Embassy) and the horrible Iran Nuclear Deal! @OANN  @foxandfriends"

It is a clear call for Jewish votes, something Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has rejected in a March 8 Facebook post:

"His comments show the president is only interested in playing the politics of division and not in fighting anti-Semitism. Mr. President, you have redefined chutzpah."

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – The grounding of India’s Jet Airways is turning into a quick windfall and long-term opportunity for international airlines keen to scoop up nearly a million outbound passengers from what was once the nation’s biggest airline.

Jet, which previously had a fleet of around 120 largely Boeing Co planes, was forced to indefinitely halt all flight operations on April 17 after its banks rejected the carrier’s plea for emergency funds.

The carrier’s descent into crisis has benefited international airlines in the form of rising fares and demand, data showed.

Fares from India to cities such as Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Bali in the first quarter of 2019 rose between 4 percent and 32 percent from a year ago, according to Indian travel portal MakeMyTrip Ltd.

In the peak travel months of May and June, fares to London have spiked as much as 36 percent and tickets to San Francisco are up nearly 20 percent from a year ago, according to data from travel portal Yatra.com.

“For the next three months it’s actually bonanza time for international players,” said Ashish Nainan, a research analyst at CARE Ratings. “At least until the middle of June, the fares are not going to come down.”

Due to rising demand, even before Jet’s lessors grounded planes, carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines Ltd and United Airlines saw an up to a 27 percent increase in passenger numbers from India in the last quarter of 2018, data from India’s aviation regulator showed. That is the latest period for which the data is available.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, clocking 15-20 percent domestic growth in recent years. It has long had only two full-service long-haul carriers, state-run Air India and Jet.

Jet is now hoping to be bailed out by a new investor, with final bids due on May 10.

INCREASING CAPACITY

Before its grounding, Jet had the biggest share of India’s outbound international air traffic, carrying 12 percent of the 7.8 million passengers headed overseas in the Oct-Dec quarter, down from 14 percent a year earlier, data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.

For an interactive graphic on Jet’s market share, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2WvDQYi

For an interactive graphic on average daily flights by the airline, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2FeFDel

The total number of passengers traveling overseas with Jet fell 10 percent during the last quarter of 2018 even as the outbound travel market grew about 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines posted a 27 percent increase in passengers from India, Cathay registered 17 percent growth and British Airways saw a 10 percent rise in the same period.

Cathay said the events at Jet combined with increasing demand for travel had led it to deploy larger aircraft with more seats on some Indian routes.

“In the long term we would certainly like to be able to offer more capacity into India, not just on our existing routes but by establishing new services to secondary cities,” Cathay said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines, in an email to Reuters, said the Indian market is “very promising” but declined to give details of airfare levels or demand patterns in the wake of Jet’s exit, citing a quiet period before the release of its annual results.

DOMESTIC GAINS

Jet’s grounding has also had a big impact on the domestic market, with inter-city air fares to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata soaring more than 20 percent in May and June, according to Yatra.com.

The spike in fares is expected to underpin strong earnings for IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd, which are set to report results for the quarter ended March 31 in the coming weeks.

“Domestic Indian carriers are the main benefactors, but I suspect if Jet fails to be revived by May 10 then Vistara and other airlines that ply international routes, particularly the lucrative Gulf market, are the main winners,” said Shukor Yusof, the head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics. Vistara is a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

Inadequate bilateral traffic rights between India and other countries, however, could be an impediment to foreign carriers’ hopes of winning business lost by Jet, some analysts said.

“Even before Jet’s operational shutdown, international capacity was significantly constrained,” said Kapil Kaul, CEO for South Asia of consultancy CAPA. “We have now more serious capacity challenge … this is unlikely to be stabilized in the near term.”

A new national government likely to be in place sometime after elections end in May is expected to address the international capacity constraints, and once bilateral agreements are eased airlines including Emirates, Turkish and Qatar would immediately benefit, said Kaul.

“We would love to add more flights but we are at the limit of the allocation granted to us for traffic rights,” Emirates Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori told reporters in Dubai on Wednesday.

(Reuters) – AstraZeneca Plc beat first-quarter sales and earnings expectations on Friday as the British drugmaker benefited from a push into cancer drugs and emerging markets including China.

Newer treatments such as lung cancer drug Tagrisso, now the company’s top selling medicine, have helped the drugmaker’s return to growth after years of crumbling sales due to patent losses on older drugs.

Sales in China have shown explosive growth, more than doubling since 2012, but AstraZeneca executives on Friday said that may not be sustained.

“The enormous growth you currently see in China, 28 percent, probably is not sustainable, but we feel very bullish that the growth will continue to be at a pace of between 15 percent and 20 percent,” Ruud Dobber, executive vice president, BioPharma, told Reuters.

Shares of the company were down 0.2 percent at 5,878 pence at 1031 GMT.

The turnaround in AstraZeneca’s fortunes has been powered by a push into cancer treatments led by Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, who saw off a 2014 takeover bid from Pfizer in part by promising annual sales of $45 billion by 2023.

In the first quarter, sales from its oncology unit rose 59 percent to $1.89 billion, accounting for 35 percent of total product sales.

The company has moved deeper into cancer therapy market through wide-ranging deals, including those for immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Last month, it agreed a multi-billion dollar oncology deal with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd.

“We’re reaching that point where after years of having to keep faith, we have actually got something tangible to believe in,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett said.

AstraZeneca also backed its annual sales and earnings forecast and said it has extensively prepared for UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union, even in the event of a no-deal exit.

The company has already spent more than 40 million pounds ($52 million) on Brexit preparations, including stockpiling six weeks’ worth of drugs in the UK and four weeks in continental Europe to guard against shortages.

AstraZeneca said product sales rose 14 percent at constant currency to $5.47 billion in the quarter, led by its lung cancer drug Tagrisso and respiratory treatment Pulmicort.

China sales increased by 28 percent to $1.24 billion in the quarter, accounting for nearly a quarter of overall product sales.

Core earnings came in at 89 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts on average were expecting core earnings of 85 cents per share and product sales of $5.29 billion, according to a company provided consensus of 19 analysts.

It’s the type of crime that doesn’t happen every day.

Police in the suburbs of Philadelphia say three suspects broke into a medical facility in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, last Saturday and fled with 18 colonoscopies – devices used for examining the health of patients’ colons.

The devices were reportedly worth a total of about $450,000, authorities said.

But police were perplexed about what the suspects might have planned to do with the instruments.

“This is not something that a typical pawn shop might accept,” Lower Merion Police Detective Sergeant Michael Vice told Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV. “My feeling would be that it was some type of black market sales.”

Such a market apparently does exist, Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath told Philly.com.

“They appeared to know precisely where to go, and they pried the door open,” McGrath said of the suspects, who were captured on surveillance video leaving the facility, carrying bulging backpacks.

Police are hoping the suspects will be caught in the end.
