Pope kisses feet of South Sudan leaders, urging them to keep the peace

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Francis, in a dramatic gesture after an unprecedented retreat at the Vatican, knelt to kiss the feet of South Sudan’s previously warring leaders on Thursday as he urged them to not return to a civil war.

He appealed to President Salva Kiir, his former deputy turned rebel leader Riek Machar, and three other vice presidents to respect an armistice they signed and commit to forming a unity government next month.

“I am asking you as a brother to stay in peace. I am asking you with my heart, let us go forward. There will be many problems but they will not overcome us. Resolve your problems,” Francis said in improvised remarks.

The leaders appeared to be stunned as the 82-year-old pope, helped by aides, knelt with difficulty to kiss the shoes of the two main opposing leaders and several other people in the room.

The pope’s words were made even more pressing as anxiety grew in South Sudan over whether Thursday’s coup in neighboring Sudan could scupper a fragile peace deal that ended South Sudan’s brutal five-year civil war.

The Vatican brought together South Sudanese leaders for 24 hours of prayer and preaching inside the pope’s residence in a last ditch attempt to heal bitter divisions a month before the war-ravaged nation is due to set up a unity government.

Woman assaults man wearing ‘MAGA’ hat at Mexican eatery, claims she's the victim

A Massachusetts woman upset that a patron at a Mexican restaurant in Cape Cod was wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat was arrested for allegedly assaulting him.

Rosaine Santos, a 41-year-old immigrant from Brazil living in Falmouth, was charged disorderly conduct, assault, and battery after a confrontation at Casa Vallarta” Mexican restaurant last Friday.

According to police, Santos was upset that a man – later identified as 23-year-old Bryton Turner of Mashpee – had the audacity to wear the iconic red hat at the Mexican eatery, Boston 25 reported.

MAGA-HAT WEARING TEEN CLAIMS CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL WOULDN'T PERMIT HER TO WEAR HAT

Turner told police that he was minding his own business when Santos started yelling at him because of his hat. Annoyed by the woman’s antics, he pulled out his phone and started recording her.

In the video, Santos is seen walking behind him and hitting his hat off his head.

“That’s the problem – the problem with American these days, people are just ignorant,” Turner said in the video.

When police arrived at the restaurant, Santos reportedly told them that Turner should not be allowed to eat at a Mexican restaurant because of his support for President Donald Trump, who is pushing to building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

As police escorted Santos out of the restaurant, she allegedly took another swipe at Turner.

Santos told Boston 25 that while she regrets her actions, she was the victim in the whole incident and that she was provoked.

“I had a little bit to drink maybe that’s the reason that I couldn’t walk away but being discriminated for so many times in my life, I just had to stand up for myself,” she said. “He’s not a victim. I am the victim. I have been bullied, OK?”

Geo Macarao, a bartender at the restaurant, told Boston 25 that Turner has just ordered food when Santos started attacking him unprovoked.

“I couldn’t imagine somebody just coming up and hitting them when there’s cops right here,” he added. “She just tried to grab my hat in front of four officers, not smart.”

Foreigners Now Half of Berlin’s Prison Population

Foreigners now make up half of the prison population in Berlin, Germany, and officials are struggling to conquer the language barrier complicating even the simplest of tasks.

A private company that provides video translators around-the-clock is being considered to address the crisis because city’s current administration “wants to avoid” inmates serving as translators for prison workers.

"People often can not even tell us if their abdominal pain is due to a co-prisoner beating them up," said an official.

Since 2013, while the percentage of foreign prisoners rose from 35% to 50%, the total number of prisoners decreased.

Because of this, the country’s official language is now the de facto foreign language in its own prisons, a phenomenon a prison committee chairman links to Europe’s migration crisis.

“The trend has intensified [since] the year 2015,” said the chairman. “[It] is obvious that the wave of immigration has to do with it.”

“In my view, nobody was prepared for such a development.”

Correspondingly, officials in Germany's neighbor France have acknowledged their own prison issues linked to foreign occupants.

The nation’s law enforcement is stretched to its limits and prisons are becoming outlets for Islamic radicalization, says French MP Valérie Boyer.

“There’s a shortage of prison space,” said the French MP. “All while radicalization prospers, especially in prisons.”

Sanders: Dems Leaving Trump ‘No Choice’ on Border Security

President Donald Trump is "not threatening" to shut down the Mexican border, but is taking his job as commander in chief very seriously when it comes to protecting the American people, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Tuesday.

"Democrats in Congress are leaving us no choice," Sanders told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "This is not the path the president wants to take. They're leaving us no choice because they're unwilling to fix the problem. They're too busy playing politics."

Mexico, however, has been taking a "greater sense of responsibility" to help stop people from coming across the border by stopping them in Mexico and offering them asylum there while they wait for their claim to be processed in the United States, said Sanders.

Sanders also discussed a push by House Democrats for the release of special counsel Robert Mueller's unredacted report, saying it shows again what "sore losers" they are.

"They got beaten in 2016 because we had the candidate with a better message," said Sanders. "Now we're seeing they've gotten beat again when it comes to the Mueller report. They were convinced, they went out and lied about what they expected the Mueller report to tell America. They got it wrong. They got it wrong in 2016."

Also on Tuesday, Sanders responded to Trump's comments that there will not be a vote on Obamacare until after the 2020 election.

"The president wants to see healthcare return to the power of the patient," she said. "He wants the people that are receiving the care to get to make decisions about it."

BERLIN (Reuters) – The CEO of Deutsche Telekom criticized the amount companies will have to pay to get fifth generation mobile internet spectrum in Germany as the amount of total bids approached 5 billion euros ($5.6 billion) on Wednesday.

“This money is taken away from the customers, citizens and operators,” Timotheus Hoettges said at a conference in Berlin.

“You can only spend the euro once,” he said, adding that 4.6 billion euros equal 23,000 mobile sites that the industry cannot build.

S. Carolina college apologizes for blackface yearbook photos

The University of South Carolina's president is apologizing after pictures of white students wearing blackface were found in old yearbooks.

USC President Harris Pastides (Pas-TEE-Dees) said in a letter Tuesday that the photos were found in the Garnet and Black, which was the school's yearbook from 1898 to 1994.

The letter says there are a number of "offensive photos" depicting white students in blackface and other "offensive content." Pastides says the school "denounces" the photos and mindset they represent.

He says the photos provide another opportunity to learn from "the demons of the past."

The revelations come amid national criticism after a blackface photo on Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's yearbook page surfaced.

Pastides says South Carolina wants to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and can thrive.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

Lakewood police tweeted there were multiple fatalities but did not give a specific number. Six people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released, according to the paper.

Lanes in both directions were closed and expected to remain so into Friday morning.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
