Lithium executive pleads not guilty in biggest U.S. college admissions scandal

BOSTON (Reuters) – The temporarily ousted chief executive of Advantage Lithium Corp pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges of participating in the largest college-admissions fraud scheme in U.S. history.

David Sidoo became the first of the 33 parents charged in the scam to plead not guilty. Prosecutors said he paid $200,000 to the scheme’s accused mastermind, William “Rick” Singer, to arrange for people to take the SAT admissions test for his two sons.

Some 50 people including prominent executives, Hollywood actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman and college coaches have been charged in the scheme. Prosecutors say Singer made some $25 million over eight years by bribing coaches and arranging for phony test-takers to secure clients’ children spots at elite universities including Yale, Georgetown and Stanford.

Sidoo, who was temporarily replaced as CEO by Advantage Lithium’s board of directors on Thursday, declined to speak to a reporter as he entered the courtroom in Boston federal court.

Singer on Tuesday pleaded guilty to masterminding the scheme, which highlighted the lengths that wealthy and powerful Americans would go to cheat the high-stakes and high-pressure college admissions system.

One of the schools involved, the University of Southern California, already has rescinded admissions offers to six students involved in the scheme and said it will review what actions to take against students already admitted who took part.

Advantage Lithium is in the process of developing a potential Argentine lithium mine. Lithium is a key ingredient in batteries for electric cars.

Others prominent executives accused in the scheme include Douglas Hodge, former executive of investment firm PIMCO; Manuel Henriquez, who resigned as CEO of specialty finance company Hercules Capital Inc; Gordon Caplan, who has been placed on leave from his post as co-chairman of the global law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher; and TPG Capital private equity partner William McGlashan Jr., who was fired by the firm on Thursday.

Loughlin was dropped by the company that owns the Hallmark cable channel and LVMH’s Sephora beauty chain ended a sponsorship deal with her daughter, Olivia, as a result of the charge. Loughlin’s husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, also has been charged.

Both Singer and the parents alleged to have paid into the scheme could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Federal Court: Required Ultrasound Before Abortion Constitutional

A federal appeals panel on Thursday ruled to uphold a 2017 Kentucky law requiring doctors to perform an ultrasound and present the resulting image to women terminating their pregnancies.

Under the law, HB2, physicians must show an ultrasound image and play audio of the fetal heartbeat before a woman is allowed to have an abortion. Women are permitted to look away from the ultrasound and ask that the volume of the heartbeat, if present, be turned down. Doctors who violate the law face up to $250,000 in fines and possible suspension or revocation of their medical license.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down on Thursday a previous lower court ruling which found that HB2 presented an undue burden on women seeking abortions and was not constitutional because it violated the rights of physicians providing abortions, according to the Louisville Courier Journal.

“We hold that HB 2 provides relevant information,” Judge John Bush wrote in the decision, according to the Journal. “The information conveyed by an ultrasound image, its description and the audible beating fetal heart gives a patient a greater knowledge of the unborn life inside her. This also inherently provides the patient with more knowledge about the effect of an abortion procedure: it shows her what or whom she is consenting to terminate,” Bush wrote in the decision, the Journal reported.

Robert Barnes joins Alex Jones live in studio to discuss how adversity shouldn’t be avoided for children, but should instead be embraced as a way to overcome challenges and become stronger individuals.

A heartbeat typically becomes detectable between six and nine weeks in pregnancy.

Dissenting Judge Bernice Bouie Donald pushed back on the appeals panel’s final ruling, saying, “HB 2 is a restriction on speech that has no basis in the practice of medicine,” the Journal reported. “I am gravely concerned with the precedent the majority creates today,” she said. “Its decision opens the floodgates to states in this Circuit to manipulate doctor-patient discourse solely for ideological reasons,” she added.

Republican Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin applauded the ruling, calling it “a major, pro-life legal victory.”

The appeals panel’s decision comes after a federal judge recently extended a suspension on two state abortion bans, one which prohibits abortions in the presence of a fetal heartbeat and another which bans abortions on the basis of race, sex or disability, according to the Louisville Courier Journal.

Bevin signed SB9 on March 15, “prohibiting a person from performing an abortion after the detection of a fetal heartbeat,” according to the legislation. The governor also signed HB5 in March, “prohibit[ing] an abortion if the pregnant woman is seeking the abortion, in whole or in part, because of an unborn child’s sex, race, color, national origin, or disability, except in the case of a medical emergency,” according to the legislation.

Both bills were signed under an “emergency” clause but were temporarily suspended after the American Civil Liberties Union, a nonprofit legal and advocacy organization, sued the state, challenging the constitutionality of both bills.

Kentucky has only one abortion clinic.

Counseling and parental consent for minors are also mandatory before a woman can have an abortion under state law, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

Former HP CEO Carly Fiorina says Dems will lose 2020 if they keep pushing anti-capitalist message

Carly Fiorina, the former CEO of Hewlett-Packard who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, told Fox News on Tuesday that if Democrats continue to push an anti-capitalism message they will likely lose the 2020 election.

“I think behind this ‘let’s tax the rich’ theme is an assumption that giving more money to government and politicians works,” Fiorina told America's Newsroom. “It demonstrably doesn’t work. The government has been getting more money every year for 50 years. It’s one of the reasons people are so frustrated with politics. The problems seem to fester whether it’s immigration or healthcare or deficits.”

Fiorina says she wrote her new book “Find Your Way: Unleash Your Power and Highest Potential,” to help people who feel “helpless and powerless and frustrated by the fact that problems just fester all around them.”

TALK OF SOCIALISM 'OFFENDS ME', SAYS HOUSE DEMOCRAT WHO CALLS HERSELF A 'PROUD CAPITALIST'

Fiorina added that she agrees with former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, who says America has “a small crisis of capitalism” and that businesses and business leaders must do more for their employees and their communities.

“I also believe that as a conservative, that power concentrated is power abused and we have too much power concentrated in some companies,” she said. “I would also say that when government gets in and tries to fix it, that’s not always capitalism. Technology is the least regulated industry in the world… the most competitive industry in the world and it delivers incredible innovation year after year at lower and lower prices.”

ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ PROMOTES 'ANTI-CAPITALIST' STREAMING SERVICE

Fiorina had a controversial record as CEO. During her tenure at HP between 1999 and 2005, the company struggled under her management and eventually she was fired by the board.

Fiorina, who lost her bid for the GOP nomination in an extremely crowded field, also weighed in on the crowded Democratic field vying for the presidency.

“We have become way too obsessed with politics and what goes on in Washington,” she said. “We’ve become observers…bystanders…we sort of look at all this political toxicity and the political campaign back and forth and think it’s going to fix things for us.”

Fiorina also believes Attorney General William Barr, who testified before the House Appropriations Committee Tuesday, should make the full Mueller report public.

“Barr hasn’t been transparent enough. …In any circumstance, when people don’t know what’s going on, they assume the worst. Never the best,” she said.

February 20, 2019

ATHENS (Reuters) – Greece has given the green light for three tourism investment schemes totaling 240.5 million euros ($272.85 million)on the islands of Mykonos, Crete and Santorini.

Tourism accounts for about a quarter of economic output in Greece, which saw a record of about 33 million visitors last year.

The Greek government on Tuesday approved the three separate schemes for the construction of hotels on Mykonos, a tourist resort on Crete and a marina on Santorini.

It also cleared a shopping and recreation mall on the outskirts of Athens budgeted at 93.4 million euros.

All four projects are expected to create about 1,200 jobs of full and seasonal employment, the government said in statement. Greece has an unemployment rate of 18.5 percent, the highest in the euro zone.

California authorities say they found cocaine hidden in cereal boxes

California authorities on Friday said they uncovered a stash of cocaine hidden within multiple cereal boxes.

The drugs were found on Thursday afternoon after a California Highway Patrol (CHP) Merced officer pulled over a car on State Route 99 for a violation, the law enforcement agency said in a news release on Facebook.

NEW JERSEY DRUG BUSTS TURN UP POT-LACED KIDS’ CEREALS

After reaching the person inside, the officer spotted “several indicators of criminal activity,” police said.

Authorities ultimately found probable cause for a search, during which they found “three cereal boxes, each containing one kilogram of cocaine,” the news release said.

“The average price of a kilogram of cocaine is $28,000. Broken down and sold per gram, each cereal box would be worth $40,000,” police said. “These might be the most expensive cereal boxes in the world.”

The driver taken into custody was booked into Merced County Sheriff’s Office Jail, the news release said.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

Lakewood police tweeted there were multiple fatalities but did not give a specific number. Six people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released, according to the paper.

Lanes in both directions were closed and expected to remain so into Friday morning.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s a look at what you need to know today …

EXCLUSIVE: Trump says ‘Sleepy Joe’ Biden doesn’t have what it takes

President Trump, in a wide-ranging, exclusive phone interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, dismissed the launch of former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Biden, the president said, has name recognition but he won’t “be able to do the job.” When asked about Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Trump criticized his record, saying Sanders had “misguided energy” and asserted that Sanders “talks a lot” but hasn’t accomplished anything. The president referred to former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas as “a fluke” who had lost much momentum and outright dismissed Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg — although he said he was “rooting” for Buttigieg. (Trump could address Biden and the other Democratic presidential candidates when he speaks today before the National Rifle Association.)

The Democratic Party’s youth movement: Biden’s biggest challenge?
Former Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Howard Dean warned Joe Biden about the troubles he may face in his presidential campaign, especially from the “35-year-olds” who Dean says have been running the party — a clear nod to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and fellow freshmen Democrats. “This is a very different party than even the party Joe Biden ran in in 2012. Very different,” Dean continued. “A lot of people could win this race. There’s 20 people in there. I think it’s going to take $20 million to get to the starting line. If you can’t raise $20 million, you’re gone, and I think that’s going to take care of about six or eight of these folks. … But it is not the same party that it was five years ago.” A progressive political group that boosted Ocasio-Cortez’s bid for Congress last year vowed to oppose Biden and blasted him as part of the “old guard.”

More tales from the FBI texts
Text messages between former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page indicate they discussed using briefings to the Trump team after the 2016 election to identify people they could “develop for potential relationships,” track lines of questioning and “assess” changes in “demeanor” – language one GOP lawmaker called “more evidence” of irregular conduct in the original Russia probe. Fox News has learned the texts, initially released in 2018 by a Senate committee, are under renewed scrutiny, with GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley and Homeland Security Committee chair Ron Johnson sending a letter Thursday night to Attorney General Bill Barr pushing for more information on the matter.
