The Miami Dolphins reportedly signed 36-year-old quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to a two-year deal on Sunday, two days after trading Ryan Tannehill to the Tennessee Titans.

The journeyman Fitzpatrick joins his third AFC East organization and eighth team overall.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the deal was worth $11 million, with incentives that could boost the total to $17 to $20 million.

The Dolphins are hoping for some “Fitzmagic” in South Beach. Last season with Tampa Bay, Fitzpatrick made headlines by becoming the first player in NFL history to throw for 400-plus yards in three consecutive games.

While juggling the Buccaneers’ starting job with Jameis Winston, Fitzpatrick finished the season with a 2-5 record. He completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 2,366 yards, 17 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

He played previously in the AFC East as a starter with the Buffalo Bills (2009-12) and the New York Jets (2015-16). His best season was with New York in 2015 when he went 10-6 and set career highs in passing yards (3,905) and touchdowns (31).

Fitzpatrick began his career with the then-St. Louis Rams (2005-06) and has also played for the Cincinnati Bengals (2007-08), Tennessee Titans (2013) and Houston Texans (2014).

In 141 games (126 starts) he owns a 50-75-1 record with 29,357 passing yards, 190 touchdowns and 148 interceptions.

Clashes break out at sensitive Jerusalem holy site

Israeli police say they have closed the entrances to Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site after Palestinian suspects threw a firebomb at a police station.

Police chased after the suspects, and clashes broke out on the hilltop compound as police scuffled with Palestinians. Police say they arrested three suspects.

The site is known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, home to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The spot is a frequent flashpoint of violence.

Tensions have been heightened in recent weeks after Muslim worshippers reopened an area closed by Israel in 2003.

Israel and Jordan, the custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem, are in negotiations to resolve the dispute.

Man convicted of 5 murders in Kansas City cul-de-sac in 2014

A man with a violent past has been convicted of killing five people in 2014 in a quiet cul-de-sac in south Kansas City.

Brandon Howell, 39, was found guilty Monday on five counts of first-degree murder and seven other felonies in the killings. Prosecutors have said they intend to seek the death penalty.

The Jackson County jury deliberated less than two hours after getting the case Monday morning. The defense did not call any witnesses during the weeklong trial, The Kansas City Star reported .

According to court records, the killings began when Howell tried to steal a classic Jaguar from the home of 80-year-old George Taylor and his wife, Anna Taylor. Police have said Howell couldn't get the car started and instead stole the Taylors' sports utility vehicle.

Witnesses told police they saw the driver of the Taylors' vehicle stop in front of Susan Choucroun's house next door. He got out and shot her in her driveway before leaving. Arriving officers found the Taylors severely beaten in their basement. They died a week later in a hospital.

Two other potential witnesses to the theft — 88-year-old Lorene Hurst and her son, 63-year-old Darrel Hurst — also were shot to death, possibly as they were returning from the grocery store.

The SUV later was found abandoned near a Motel 6 in neighboring Platte County, where Howell is charged with assaulting three people. Howell was arrested that night walking along a freeway carrying a shotgun in his pants.

Howell had long been on the radar of law enforcement. In 1998, the body of his classmate, 18-year-old Nick Travis, was found buried in the yard of a duplex in Kansas City, Missouri, that was being renovated by Howell's father. Howell was the last person seen with Travis and 16-year-old Tabitha Brewer before the sweethearts disappeared from Johnson County, Kansas. Brewer's body has never been found, although her partially burned purse was discovered in a trash container.

While that case was under investigation. Howell was arrested in a 1999 home invasion robbery in Gardner, Kansas, in which a pet cat was beheaded. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Before he was freed, Jackson County, Missouri, jurors acquitted him in the deaths of Travis and Brewer.

California school district changing name tied to Confederacy

The Dixie School District board voted Tuesday night to change the name of the 150-year-old district after critics linked it to the Confederacy and slavery.

Trustees voted 3-1, with one abstention, to change both the name of the San Francisco Bay Area district and the name of its elementary school by Aug. 22, when classes resume.

However, the board didn't choose a new name. A committee made up of parents, other community members and district staff will be set up to solicit and evaluate suggestions from the public.

The board rejected some 15 names in February when it voted against a name-change on grounds that more community input was needed.

The cost of the name change, such as replacing signs, was estimated at nearly $40,000, but the Marin Community Foundation pledged to cover it.

Dixie is a nickname for the southern U.S. states that formed the pro-slavery Confederacy in 1860, sparking the Civil War. The legacy of the Confederacy prompts political, legal and cultural conflicts to this day.

Those who support changing the name say the district was named Dixie by James Miller, the school founder, on a dare by Confederate sympathizers. Those who oppose the change say the school system was named for Mary Dixie, a Miwok Indian woman that Miller knew in the 1840s.

The name-change issue has generated heated debate in San Rafael, an overwhelmingly white city of 59,000 people, with some insisting the Dixie name is racially insensitive while others complain the proposed change is political correctness run amok.

Both sides spoke out during Tuesday night's meeting.

"You know Dixie is a racist name, so change it," said Bali Simon, a fifth-grader at Dixie Elementary School. "I'm hoping I can go back to school next fall proud of our new district name."

An opponent of the name change, Mette Nygard, said the "ugly insinuations" tarnished Miller's reputation.

"The community is so far removed from the confederacy that it's a ridiculous assertion," Nygard said.

However, she was interrupted by demonstrators chanting "Dixie must go!" Critics of the current name also brought signs into the room that said "say no to racism."

Some of the proposed names that were previously rejected by the board included "Marie Dixie Elementary School District" and "Skywalker Elementary School District."

ZURICH (Reuters) – Swiss President Ueli Maurer did not speak to Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido about freezing Swiss bank accounts belonging to the South American nation, a foreign ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.

“This information is not correct. There was no telephone contact between Mr. Gauido and President Maurer,” the spokesman said by email in response to an enquiry. He was not immediately available to elaborate.

“We are talking to the Swiss president,” Guaido had said in an interview with Mexican network Televisa. He said they had spoken on Wednesday morning but did not mention Maurer, who is also finance minister, by name.

Polls close in historic Chicago mayoral election to replace Rahm Emanuel

Polls have closed in Chicago's mayoral election, in which a former federal prosecutor who has never held elected office was vying Tuesday against a powerful official whose political career spans decades -- providing voters a clear contrast in a historic runoff already assured of elevating a black woman to lead the nation's third-largest city.

The race to succeed Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who opted not to run for re-election, comes days after Chicago state prosecutors stunned the nation by opting to drop charges against actor Jussie Smollet, who was accused of faking a hate-crime attack that implicated supporters of President Trump. Prosecutors have said they did not intend to vindicate Smollet, but the actor publicly claimed exoneration -- leading comedians to mock him, and police unions and the mayor's office to cry foul.

Lori Lightfoot, 56, who had served as an assistant U.S. attorney before entering private practice, emerged as the surprising leader in the first round of voting in February when 14 candidates were on the ballot. She was matched up against Toni Preckwinkle, a former schoolteacher who served on the Chicago City Council for 19 years before becoming Cook County Board president in 2011.

Chicago will become the largest U.S. city to elect a black woman as mayor. The winner will join seven other black women currently serving as mayors in major U.S. cities, including Atlanta and New Orleans.

Lightfoot, who is openly gay, seized on outrage over the deadly shooting of black teenager Laquan McDonald -- at the hands of white officer Jason Van Dyke -- to launch her campaign. That was even before Emanuel announced he wouldn't seek a third term amid criticism for initially resisting calls to release video of the shooting.

WHY WAS OBAMA CHIEF OF STAFF REACHING OUT TO SMOLLET PROSECUTOR?

"I'm not a person who decided I would climb the ladder of a corrupt political party," Lightfoot said during a debate last month. "I don't hold the title of committeeman, central committeeman, boss of the party."

That was a not-so-veiled reference to Preckwinkle, who also leads the county's Democratic Party and has countered that her opponent lacked the necessary experience for the job.

"This is not an entry-level job," Preckwinkle has said repeatedly during the campaign. "It's easy to talk about change. It's hard to actually do it. And that's been my experience — being a change maker, a change agent, transforming institutions and communities."

Joyce Ross, 64, a certified nursing assistant living on the West Side, said she cast her ballot Tuesday for Lightfoot. Ross also said she believed Lightfoot would be better able to clean up the police department and curb the city's violence.

DRIVE-BY SHOOTING SULLIES MOOD IN CHICAGO, AFTER RELATIVELY GOOD MONTH OF ONLY 20 HOMICIDES

In addition, she said she was bothered by Preckwinkle's association with longtime Alderman Ed Burke, who was indicted earlier this year on charges he tried to shake down a restaurant owner who wanted to build in his ward.

"My momma always said birds of a feather flock together," Ross said.

Truly Gannon, a 39-year old dietitian and mother of four , said she wasn't bothered by stories that portrayed Preckwinkle as an insider aligned with questionable politicians like Burke. She said she supported Preckwinkle based on her experience.

"I'm not sure Lightfoot would be able to handle the job like Preckwinkle," she said.

The campaign between the two women got off to a contentious start, with Preckwinkle's advertising focusing on Lightfoot's work as a partner at Mayer Brown, one of the nation's largest law firms, and tagging her as a "wealthy corporate lawyer."

Preckwinkle also tried to cast Lightfoot as an insider for working in police oversight posts under Emanuel and police oversight, procurement and emergency communications posts under former Mayor Richard M. Daley.

In one ad, Preckwinkle criticized Lightfoot's oversight of emergency communications in 2004 when a fire killed four children. A judge ordered Lightfoot to preserve 911 tapes after questions were raised about how the emergency call was handled. The ad noted some of the tapes were destroyed, prompting the judge to rebuke Lightfoot. The ad sparked a backlash from the family of three of the children killed, with their sister accusing Preckwinkle of trying to take advantage of her family's tragedy.

Lightfoot also responded by scolding her opponent for being negative while also airing ads pointing out Preckwinkle's connection to powerful local Democrats, including one under federal indictment.

Preckwinkle spent much of her time during the campaign answering for her ties to Chicago's political establishment. She and her supporters asserted her rise to Democratic Party leadership did not hinder her ability to oppose policies promoted by the city's ever-powerful mayors.

"My whole career has been about change, and change is action and results, not simply words," said Preckwinkle, who said her experience made her better positioned to lead a city with financial problems and poorer neighborhoods hit by gun violence.

Despite the barbs on the campaign trail, the two advanced similar ideas to boost the city's finances.

Both candidates expressed support for a casino in Chicago and for changing the state's income tax system to a graduated tax, in which higher earners would be taxed at a higher rate.

Preckwinkle said that while downtown development should remain a priority, it should not be at the cost of neighborhood growth. She promoted additional investments in neighborhood schools, affordable housing and criminal justice reform.

Lightfoot said that as mayor, she would focus on investing in neighborhoods on the West and South Sides and bring transparency and accountability to City Hall. She added she also wanted to end City Hall corruption and restore people's faith in government.

"The machine's been in decline for a while, but it still has a grip on certain things," Lightfoot said. "This is our opportunity to send it to its grave, once and for all."

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
