Gun inside diaper bag discharges, accidentally hits child and man at Chuck E Cheese

An adult man and a baby girl were reportedly shot while the man was changing the child’s diaper inside a vehicle parked outside a Chuck E. Cheese on Saturday in Alabama.

Vestavia Hills Police said the gun was hidden inside the diaper bag and it accidentally went off, hitting the man in the chest and the child in the leg.

Lt. Michael Keller told AL.com that they believe the man was searching for something in the diaper bag when he came in contact with the weapon inside and it fired. A single bullet discharged, hitting him in the chest and then striking the girl.

The child was transported to Children’s of Alabama hospital in good condition. The man was transported to UAB Hospital Trauma Center and is believed to be in serious condition, the New York Daily News reported.

Witnesses said both victims were inside the vehicle when the shot went off. Three young men who were inside the vehicle with the victims or nearby when the shooting happened were visibly upset. They were taken from the scene by police, but were not handcuffed, AL.com reported.

“You don’t expect anyone would bring a gun around where kids would be. It just doesn’t make any sense,” John Gerrard, who was at the Chuck E. Cheese at the time of the shooting with his 2-year-old daughter and wife, told WBRC.

Police said they are investigating the incident and trying to determine exactly what happened. Keller told AL.com that it was still “too soon” to determine whether the situation will warrant any charges.

Algerian prime minister promises new government in days

Algeria's new prime minister is promising to create a government within days as the country faces mass protests calling for President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to step down.

Prime Minister Noureddine Bedoui told a news conference Thursday that the government would be in place next week at the latest.

He called upon all sides to build trust and cooperate to overcome the current crisis shaking the gas-rich country, an important player in the global fight against Islamic extremism.

Bedoui was interior minister before the president named him this week to head a new government meant to calm tensions.

Bouteflika's critics plan new nationwide protests Friday.

Bouteflika agreed to abandon plans for a fifth term but he also canceled presidential elections set for April 18, raising fears he will stay in power indefinitely.

‘Tarnished image’: Myanmar touts troubled Rakhine as investment destination

YANGON (Reuters) – Organizers of a summit in Myanmar’s crisis-hit western state of Rakhine are this week pitching to investors its plentiful farmland and fishing grounds, tourist-ready beaches and historic temples.

The event’s website describes the “untouched opportunities” available in the strategically located region, close to large markets in India and Bangladesh. But a session at the fair will also be devoted to how to invest responsibly in the state, from which an estimated 730,000 minority Rohingya Muslims fled an army offensive in 2017.

A U.N. fact-finding mission last year said the military campaign, which refugees say included mass killings and rape, was orchestrated with “genocidal intent”. Myanmar denies the charge and says its offensive was a legitimate response to an insurgent threat and that it is welcoming the refugees back.

Myanmar hopes the Rakhine State Investment Fair – the first of its kind – will bring money into the impoverished region. Civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who in the past has said economic development is the key to addressing the state’s long-standing religious and ethnic tensions, is scheduled to deliver the keynote speech on Friday.

Suu Kyi’s spokesman did not answer calls seeking comment.

Nobel laureate Suu Kyi last month pledged to make Myanmar more investment-friendly as she opened a separate investment summit in the capital, Naypyitaw.

But her government remains under pressure over the 2017 exodus of refugees to Bangladesh, and the plight of hundreds of thousands more Muslims still living in camps and villages inside Rakhine, where their movements and access to healthcare and education remain restricted. A separate conflict with Rakhine rebels that escalated in December has seen aid agencies blocked from reaching many areas.

“It’s quite extraordinary that this investment fair is on, even though large chunks of central Rakhine are now off limits to prying eyes,” said Laetitia van den Assum, a retired Dutch diplomat who was a member of a commission on Rakhine led by the late former U.N. chief Kofi Annan.

CHANGING VIEWS

The investment fair has been organized by the Rakhine state government and Myanmar Investment Commission, with backing from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).

More than 350 investors will mingle with local entrepreneurs and officials at the Rakhine tourist hotspot of Ngapali beach, discussing proposals to farm soft shell crabs or package cashew nuts.

“The Rakhine issue has tarnished the country’s image. But the fair will change the international view of Myanmar,” Htoo Min Thein, secretary of Rakhine’s investment committee, said in an interview carried by the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper.

“A goal of the fair is to ensure the long-lasting peace, stability and progress in the state through investment,” he said, adding that many areas of the state were unaffected by conflict.

Investment opportunities listed on the fair’s website include several in the troubled north of the state, from where most of the Rohingya population fled in 2017.

Kazufumi Tanaka, JETRO’s managing director in Yangon, said about 50 Japanese government officials, researchers and investors would attend the fair, and that Japanese firms were particularly interested in agriculture and fisheries investments.

Asked about human rights concerns, he told Reuters JETRO would advise Japanese firms on responsible investment practices, adding that most companies would be interested in projects in the south of the state, away from the conflict zone.

“Human rights due diligence is very, very critical of course,” he said. “The image is a very negative image but the other parts of Rakhine state I believe are an opportunity for international investors.”

JICA’s office in Yangon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

ETHNIC SEGREGATION

The Rohingya crisis slowed Myanmar’s economic growth, turned off Western tourists and worried new investors. The government’s tally of new foreign investment approvals, which peaked before the violence at $9.5 billion in 2015-16, was just $3 billion for the 10 months up to January.

Peter Beynon, chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce in Myanmar, said investors should look beyond Myanmar’s “negative press”.

“Engagement is always better than isolation,” he said, adding that foreign investment in Rakhine could bring employment opportunities that would make refugees more likely to return.

Rakhine is one of Myanmar’s poorest regions, despite natural gas reserves offshore and infrastructure projects including a planned economic zone at Kyauk Pyu, where parallel oil and gas pipelines to China’s Yunnan province already have their terminals.

But some experts warn purely economic solutions to the state’s woes could cement the marginalization of the mostly stateless Rohingya. Kofi Annan’s commission said in 2017 that development in Rakhine had to be addressed alongside security and human rights, said van den Assum.

Investments that benefit all communities were welcome, she said, but companies should ask themselves, “Do they want to operate under a regime that strictly enforces ethnic segregation?”

A Reuters special report in December revealed that officials had built new homes for Buddhists where the Rohingya once lived, making the return of many refugees to their original homes impossible. (Link: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/myanmar-rohingya-return)

Myanmar says it has been ready to accept returning refugees since January, and denies discriminating against Muslims who remain in Rakhine.

In Myebon, about 200 km (125 miles) north of Ngapali beach, Muslim residents are barred from returning to their homes nearly seven years after they fled communal clashes.

“I don’t think it’s a good time to invest in Rakhine,” said Tin Aung, a Muslim community leader in the camp where they now live. “It might be good for outsiders, but we, the people in the camps, are not going to benefit from these investments.”

Notre Dame cathedral fire witnesses in Paris share shocking videos: ‘It keeps getting bigger and bigger’

Thick, billowing smoke can be seen rising from Paris' iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in shocking footage snapped by witnesses on Monday.

The top of the French landmark is currently ablaze — and crews of firefighters have rushed to the scene to try to contain the massive flames.

The peak of the church is undergoing a $6.8 million renovation project. It's unclear if the fire is related to the construction, though the fire brigade has told The Associated Press it's a possibility.

MASSIVE FIRE BREAKS OUT IN NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL IN PARIS

One man currently in the city called the view "unreal."

"I literally just visited Notre Dame two days ago. I’m currently looking at the smoke from a restaurant patio in Paris right now," he wrote on Twitter after news of the fire broke.

A woman who only identifies herself as "Sun" online tweeted a 15-second clip of the blaze, claiming she was around the scene when the fire first started.

"Omg it keeps getting bigger and bigger so fast, i'm leaving now but in case it catches up to the crowd um hi at least my last moments were in paris," she wrote in a Twitter thread.

Another woman shared footage of the plumes of smoke that she could spot across the Seine river.

"This is just awful. #NotreDame," a man added, sharing multiple videos of the burning spire.

As of about 1:30 p.m. ET, the man confirmed the building was "still burning."

This is a developing story check back here for updates.

UN warns Syria crisis is not over in new donor appeal

Top officials are warning that the crisis in Syria is not over and are calling for large-scale support for people in need on the eve of a major donors' conference.

U.N. humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock said Wednesday that "without an immediate and substantial injection of funds, lifesaving provisions of food, water, health care, shelter and protection services will likely be interrupted."

The U.N. says $3.3 billion is required to help meet Syria's aid needs, plus $5.5 billion to support Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, where most Syrians take refuge.

Around 55 countries and 80 delegations are expected to attend Thursday's donor conference in Brussels.

As the conflict enters its ninth year, about 11.7 million Syrians still depend on aid. Almost as many have fled or been displaced inside the country.

Don’t Let Vapid Celebs Influence Your Life

The college admissions scandal underscores a simple question: why are millions of people following these so-called “social media influencers” like Olivia Jade?

You’ve probably heard that Jade’s mother, Full House star Lori Loughlin, and nearly 50 others have been charged with a scheme in which federal prosecutors say wealthy parents allegedly bribed college insiders to get their children into some of the country’s most elite schools.

“The social media pages of Lori Loughlin‘s daughter were flooded with angry comments Tuesday — after the Full House actress was busted for allegedly paying bribes to get the teen into college,” reported Page Six. “The deluge began after federal prosecutors accused Loughlin and her fashion designer hubby, Mossimo Giannulli, of agreeing to pay $500,000 to get daughters Olivia Jade and Isabella Rose Giannulli designated as recruits to the University of Southern California crew team — even though they didn’t actually participate in the sport.”

Well, after surfing over to Olivia Jade’s Instagram account, one might ask why does she have over 1.3 million followers?

Instagram screenshot

Her profile looks like a generic fashion shoot album. In fact, some might even call it vapid. And yet, it apparently attracts over a million eyeballs.

This points to a societal problem in which too many people equate personal success with simply having an audience. Case in point, what exactly has this girl done besides generate a large audience for the sake of having an audience? And how has her audience benefited personally from this exchange?

But throughout history (and until recently apparently), the definition of personal success was much broader than that. It had included serving your country, being a integral part of your community, embracing self-reliance and self-determination, having a family, being an entrepreneur, creating innovations, etc.

Here the Wright Bros. achieve personal success with only a handful of onlookers as their audience.

It was never limited to simply having an audience, because in the times before the Internet, it was difficult to even have an audience and only worth doing if your livelihood depended on it, like for P.T. Barnum for example.

But now, millions of people have been socially engineered into believing that the only barometer of personal success is how many people are paying attention to you, whether you’re a so-called “social media influencer” or a suburban status chaser with an 80k truck sitting in the driveway.

Of course, a lot of these people will never have a large following, so the next best thing for them is to simply join an existing audience of some “influencer” so they can feel like they’re part of the winning team.

That mindset unfortunately handicaps people from doing something they can actually accomplish on their own, a form of personal success that they’re currently too blind to see.

Why live vicariously through your favorite football player and feel insecure about your status in life? Why not accept the fact that your own standards of personal success for yourself are different from that of an athlete who’s been randomly gifted with stellar genetics? Why not play off on your own personal strengths?

In short, personal success will never be monopolized by those who attract the most eyeballs, and that’s why a lot of these “social media influencers” have such vapid content despite attracting so much attention. But the substance is the real success!

And outside of Instagram photos and product placement, what have these “influencers” actually accomplished?

That’s why you’ve probably heard stories of Hollywood celebrities who still feel empty inside despite what they’ve achieved professionally. They don’t feel personally fulfilled by profession success and public attention alone.

And all this does tie back into the college admission scandal, namely how 20 and 30-somethings had bought into the idea that they would never be successful unless they went to college. Yet the Internet is now littered with personal stories from countless people who now have well over 100K in student loan debt because they got a vapid, non-STEM degree.

Because so many people are now taught to be followers, they unfortunately equate simply having a college degree to personal success and thus they don’t factor in the cost – and the ensuing debt.

But again, personal success is a broad concept, and it’s not just limited to simply having a college degree. Fortunately, more people are now equating success to vocational careers in which they avoid drowning under debt while make good money.

The conspiracy regarding college admissions has become a perfect example of the greed of the elite and could actually take down Deep State actors in the process.

COLOMBO (Reuters) – Sri Lanka’s former wartime defense chief, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, said on Friday he would run for president in elections this year and would stop the spread of Islamist extremism by rebuilding the intelligence service and surveilling citizens.

Gotabaya, as he is popularly known, is the younger brother of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the two led the country to a crushing defeat of separatist Tamil rebels a decade ago after a 26-year civil war.

More than 250 people were killed in bomb attacks on hotels and churches on Easter Sunday that the government has blamed on Islamist militants and that Islamic State has claimed responsibility for.

Gotabaya said the attacks could have been prevented if the island’s current government had not dismantled the intelligence network and extensive surveillance capabilities that he built up during the war and later on.

“Because the government was not prepared, that’s why you see a panic situation,” he said in an interview with Reuters.

Gotabaya said he would be a candidate “100 percent”, firming up months of speculation that he plans to run in the elections, which are due by December.

He was critical of the government’s response to the bombings. Since the attacks, the government has struggled to provide clear information about how they were staged, who was behind them and how serious the threat is from Islamic State to the country.

“Various people are blaming various people, not giving exactly the details as to what happened, even people expect the names, what organization did this, and how they came up to this level, that explanation was not given,” he said.

On Friday, President Maithripala Sirisena said the government led by premier Ranil Wickremesinghe should take responsibility for the attacks and that prior information warning of attacks was not shared with him.

Wickremesinghe said earlier he was not advised about warnings that came from India’s spy service either, presenting a picture of a government still in disarray since the two leaders fell out last October.

Gotabaya is facing lawsuits in the United States, where he is a dual citizen, over his role in the war and afterwards.

The South Africa-based International Truth and Justice Project, in partnership with U.S. law firm Hausfeld, filed a civil case in California this month against Gotabaya on behalf of a Tamil torture survivor.

In a separate case, Ahimsa Wickrematunga, the daughter of murdered investigative editor Lasantha Wickrematunga, filed a complaint for damages in the same U.S. District Court in California for allegedly instigating and authorizing the extrajudicial killing of her father.

Gotabaya said the cases were baseless and only a “little distraction” as he prepared for the election campaign. He said he had asked U.S. authorities to renounce his citizenship and that process was nearly done, clearing the way for his candidature.

‘DISMANTLE THE NETWORKS’

He said that if he won, his immediate focus would to be tackle the threat from radical Islam and to rebuild the security set-up.

“It’s a serious problem, you have to go deep into the groups, dismantle the networks,” he said, adding he would give the military a mandate to collect intelligence from the ground and to mount surveillance of groups turning to extremism.

Gotabaya said that a military intelligence cell he had set up in 2011 of 5,000 people, some of them with Arabic language skills and that was tracking the bent towards extremist ideology some of the Islamist groups were taking in eastern Sri Lanka was disbanded by the current government.

“They did not give priority to national security, there was a mix-up. They were talking about ethnic reconciliation, then they were talking about human rights issues, they were talking about individual freedoms,” he said.

President Sirisena’s government sought to forge reconciliation with minority Tamils and close the wounds of the war and launched investigations into allegations of rights abuse and torture against military officers.

Officials said many of these secret intelligence cells were disbanded because they faced allegations of abuse, including torture and extra judicial killings.

Muslims make up nearly 10 percent of Sri Lanka’s population of 22 million, which is predominantly Buddhist.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Federal Reserve may lower the interest it pays on excess reserves banks leave with it by 5 basis points at its April 30-May 1 policy meeting in a bid to prevent the federal funds rate from drifting higher, Morgan Stanley analysts said on Friday.

This would mark the third such “technical” adjustment on the interest on excess reserves (IOER) following cuts last June and December.

In response to the news that the U.S. economy rose 3.2 percent in the first quarter of 2019, White House National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow said that this “prosperity cycle” will continue if President Trump‘s policies stay in place.

Calling the advance in gross domestic product a “blow-out number,” Kudlow told “America’s Newsroom” Friday that it serves as concrete proof Trump’s measures to grow the economy have been successful.

“I’ll just say, Trump’s policies to rebuild the economy, lower taxes, regulations, opening energy, trade reform. Look, this stuff is working,” he said.

“It tells me, among other things, that the prosperity cycle we have entered into is continuing, it is strong. It has legs and momentum and frankly it is going to go on for quite some time,” he continued. “This is the new Trump economy. Some people don’t like that or they don’t agree with that. I respect the differences but I’ll tell you it’s working.”

STUART VARNEY: THANKS TO TRUMP, AMERICANS ARE FEELING BETTER ABOUT THEIR FINANCES

39 MILLION ADULTS CANNOT AFFORD A SUMMER VACATION

Kudlow added that Trump has “ended the war” on business and success, and is rallying for the small business owners of America.

“The president is rebuilding incentives, he is rebuilding confidence, he the rebuilding optimism,” he said. “He is basically saying you should keep more of what you earn. He is basically saying to small businesses we’ll cut the paperwork back and make it easier for you to start a business and prosper.”

Kudlow said the Trump administration is also working with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders to implement bipartisan deals to ensure the continuation of the GDP’s success.

“If the policies and the principles remain in place — and I believe they will — then I believe this new prosperity expansion cycle is going to go on for a whole bunch of more years,” he said.

Tennis - Australian Open - Women's Singles Final

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – World number one Naomi Osaka came from behind in the final set to beat Croatian Donna Vekic 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) on Friday and move into the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix semi-finals.

Osaka comfortably won the opening set but was tested by the Croatian, who pushed her to the limit in the second and third. The Japanese made 45 unforced errors as she struggles to get to grips with swapping hard courts for clay.

Osaka was visibly frustrated and trailed 5-1 in the final set but she refused to give up and found her rhythm to break Vekic twice and prevent her from serving for the match.

In the tiebreaker, a confident Osaka upped her baseline game and had two early mini breaks before wrapping up the match in two hours and 18 minutes. An infuriated Vekic even smashed her racket after losing the match.

“I told myself I didn’t want to have any regrets here,” Osaka said. “I was stressed out when I went down 1-5… but this (comeback) was pretty good because I don’t play really well on clay.”

Earlier, world number three Petra Kvitova came back from a set down to beat Anastasija Sevastova 2-6 6-2 6-3 and move into the tournament’s semi-finals for the third time in her career.

Sevastova had a dream start, breaking Kvitova twice to take a 3-0 lead as the Czech struggled with her first serve. Kvitova also made a slew of unforced errors, with many of her returns going long.

Sevastova used the full width of the court to get the better of Kvitova, who played on the back foot for much of the first set as the Latvian gave her little time to catch her breath.

However, Kvitova recovered in the second set and she broke Sevastova’s serve when she was 3-2 up, winning 10 straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Sevastova looked shaken and was broken again to give Kvitova the second set.

Kvitova took command in the final set and broke a visibly upset Sevastova to take a 3-1 lead before easing into the semis.

“In the first set I missed almost everything. I was pretty slow and she just couldn’t miss,” Kvitova said. “In the second set it was very important for me to stay on my serve and the chance to break her came.”

Kiki Bertens plays Angelique Kerber later on Friday and Victoria Azarenka faces Anett Kontaveit in the last quarter-final.

President Donald Trump says he feels “young” and “vibrant” at age 72 and thinks he can beat 76-year-old Joe Biden “easily.”

A reporter asked Trump at the White House on Friday how old is too old to be president of the United States.

Trump said: “I just feel like a young man. I’m so young. I can’t believe it. … I’m a young vibrant man.”

Then he smiled and said he’s not sure about Democratic presidential contender Biden, the second-oldest contender in the race behind Bernie Sanders.

Trump said: “I look at Joe. I don’t know about him.”

Biden, in an interview on ABC’s “The View,” joked in response that if Trump “looks young and vibrant compared to me, I should probably go home.”
