Trump slams EU in aircraft dispute, pushes tariffs on $11 billion of imports

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday the United States would impose tariffs on $11 billion of products from the European Union, a day after U.S. trade officials proposed a list of EU products to target as part of an ongoing aircraft dispute.

“The World Trade Organization finds that the European Union subsidies to Airbus has adversely impacted the United States, which will now put Tariffs on $11 Billion of EU products! The EU has taken advantage of the U.S. on trade for many years. It will soon stop!” Trump said in a post on Twitter.

The two sides have been locked in a years-long global trade dispute over mutual claims of illegal aid to plane giants, Netherlands-based Airbus and U.S.-based Boeing, to gain advantage in the world jet business.

The U.S. Trade Representative on Monday announced the planned products targeted in retaliation for European aircraft subsidies, with a final list expected this summer.

Meanwhile, the EU has started preparing to retaliate over Boeing subsidies, an EU official said on Tuesday.

The moves comes as the record subsidy dispute, which has been grinding its way through the WTO for almost 15 years, reaches a climax, with both sides in arbitration to decide the size of any countermeasures.

State Dept Source: Officials Watch NKorea Site 'in Real Time'

U.S. officials are "watching in real time" developments at North Korea's Sohae long-range launch site, which researchers believe is back to normal operating status after Chairman Kim Jong Un twice pledged to dismantle it, according to a source identified as a senior State Department official.

"The intent of the North Koreans in this matter is known only to them, we don't know why they are taking these steps," the State Department official said, reports NBC News. "They need to keep their commitments to the president of the United States."

In the past, the facility had been used to launch satellites, which uses technology similar to that used for intercontinental ballistic missiles. Kim had agreed to dismantle it last June during his summit with President Donald Trump and again with South Korea's President Moon Jae-in in September.

Talks between Trump and Kim collapsed Feb. 28, after which reports began to surface that work was being done at the closed facility.

The images show "the ease with which [North Korea] can reverse steps it might take toward denuclearization in the future," an analysis by Joseph Bermudez and Victor Cha of Beyond Parallel, a research project funded by the think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies states.

The analysis stressed there have been no images showing a missile being moved to the launch pad.

Trump said this week he would be "very, very disappointed" in Kim if the site has been restored.

Dershowitz: Expanding Supreme Court 'Terrible Idea'

Expanding the Supreme Court is a "terrible idea" that only serve to increase the high court's politicization, Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz said Wednesday, but he does agree adding term limits might be a good way to go.

"The highest court is supposed to be a neutral, objective, nonpartisan institution, as the chief justices said there are no Republican justices or Democratic justices," Dershowitz told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" about the growing calls from Democratic presidential candidates to add more justices. "That's really a wish rather than a reality."

Both parties are at fault for the current standoff, he added.

"Republicans are at fault for not letting Merrick Garland's nomination come to the floor," said Dershowitz. "The Democrats are at fault for the way they treated President [Donald] Trump's nominees."

Term limits could help with the court's politicization problems, said Dershowitz.

"The framers [of the Constitution] didn't intend for justices to sit on the Supreme Court for 40 or 50 years," said Dershowitz. "Life expectancy was in the 40s and 50s and people were appointed when they were 50. Now they're serving for lifetimes."

Dershowitz added he's concerned about the repercussions of tampering with the Supreme Court, as it raises political risks.

"There are some who say there should be five Republican justices, five Democratic justices and five Independent justices picked by the 10 partisan justices," said Dershowitz. "Every idea seems worse than previous ideas and worse than the status quo. We may, in the end, have to struggle to maintain the current law because fixing it may produce more problems than the problems that currently exist."

Exclusive: Behind Airbnb’s bet on show business to hook travelers

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Hollywood has a new suitor in Silicon Valley.

Airbnb Inc, the high-flying startup for booking home rentals around the world, has ambitions to develop a slate of original shows to whet customers’ appetite for travel, four people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The strategy, previously unreported, is crucial for the company, which is privately valued at $31 billion and is gearing up for an initial public offering of stock expected next year. Airbnb must distinguish itself from Booking.com, Expedia and others in the fiercely competitive and consolidating travel industry, where apartment-renting services are increasingly common.

Chief Executive Brian Chesky is driving the idea, three of the people said, arguing that creative content is important for Airbnb’s brand even if the business case is not always clear.

“Brian wants to create a studio,” one of the people said. The mentality: “Let’s do shows. Let’s do films, because we want to be travel-everything.”

Chesky, who co-founded the company, “likes big splashy things,” another person said.

For at least three years, Airbnb has batted around ideas for creating or licensing mini-series and documentaries about travel, and shows featuring Airbnb homes, guests and hosts, one of the people said. It has discussed working with studios as well as starting its own.

(GRAPHIC: Airbnb in the spotlight – https://tmsnrt.rs/2IkarwX)

The company has worked on a television show slated for Apple Inc’s upcoming streaming service: “Home,” a docuseries featuring unique abodes around the world and the people behind them. One executive producer of the show is Joe Poulin, a company vice president who ran Luxury Retreats when Airbnb acquired the booking site in 2017.

Airbnb announced last week it had developed and produced the documentary “Gay Chorus Deep South,” which follows the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus on a tour across the Southeastern United States, and will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival next week. Airbnb told Reuters it provided funding for the project.

In an interview, Airbnb’s top policy and communications executive, Chris Lehane, said the company is considering streaming films and shows through its app as well as through other video platforms.

“We’re very much in the R&D phase here,” said Lehane. “It’s not just limited to video. It could be audible. It could be physical.”

“The more we put content out there, the more you’re going to bring people to the platform,” he said.

Original shows could also entice customers even before they have decided where to go on vacation and demystify Airbnb for travelers, including Wall Street investors, who have stuck to familiar hotel chains.

TECH INDUSTRY PLAYBOOK

Airbnb has yet to cement all the details related to its timeline, program financing or even lineup. Its work so far has ranged from the Tribeca documentary to a YouTube show about travel trends and other video marketing efforts.

Offering original content and other media is an increasingly popular strategy in Silicon Valley, where technology companies are desperate for deeper relationships with internet users and their lucrative data.

Apple last month unveiled a TV streaming service and joined a long list of companies attracted to Hollywood’s glitter, including Amazon.com Inc and even Walmart Inc. The big-box retailer had said it will partner with U.S. movie studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to make content for its video-on-demand service, Vudu.

Such bets are expensive, but often justified by executives for their marketing value. Airbnb said its network of half a billion travelers is drawing partners who wish to produce and finance content for the company.

Airbnb’s original magazine remains central to this effort. Published by media conglomerate Hearst since May 2017, the Airbnb Magazine will be a jumping off point for other content that the company develops. It is the darling of CEO Chesky, something the billionaire founder hopes will become a collector’s item like old print editions of “Rolling Stone,” Lehane said.

Films and streaming content would mark the next iteration of a business that has steadily expanded to get customers to use its app for more parts of their travel experience. Airbnb added restaurant reservations and said it would branch into transportation services, so customers remain in its orbit long after they have picked a place to stay.

The company even explored building its own flight-booking feature and acquiring travel fare aggregator Skyscanner before retreating from that idea, said another person with knowledge of the matter.

A key player in the video effort is Kim Kingsley, co-founder of news site Politico. Kingsley joined Airbnb last summer and is in charge of the firm’s content strategy, according to her LinkedIn profile. Meanwhile, Airbnb’s magazine lead, Ben Kasman, has helped grow the publication to more than a million readers.

Even by technology startups’ standards, Airbnb is not afraid to spend large sums on marketing. It hired Ready State, a high-end agency in San Francisco, whose employees flew to Europe to create videos for Airbnb. The firm was also hired to promote tours sold on Airbnb’s website, known as “Experiences,” even though many of those are cheap.

“It’s all part of the efforts to broaden the base,” said one person close to the company, “to make what they do more mainstream.”

Boy Scouts ‘perversion files’ list 7,800 suspected pedophiles: attorney

Confidential files on suspected pedophiles maintained by the Boy Scouts of America contain the names of 7,800 individuals, an attorney for child sex abuse victims said Tuesday.

The organization’s so-called “perversion files” have been previously disclosed through litigation but the number of alleged abusers had not been known, attorney Jeff Anderson, who represents former scouts who say they were sexually abused, said Tuesday.

Anderson said a child abuse expert hired by the Scouts revealed the staggering number during testimony in a lawsuit in January.

“The alarming thing about this is not just the number but the fact is that the Boy Scouts of America has never actually released these names in any form that can be known to the public,” he said at a Manhattan news conference.

Anderson said the files also contain the names of more than 12,000 suspected victims, according to the Scouts' expert.

Attorney Jeff Anderson said Tuesday that the Boy Scouts of America in "perversion files" contain the names of 7,800 suspected pedophiles.

The files date from 1959 to 1985, according to reports from several years ago.

Anderson said those on the list may have been removed from scouting, but would not have faced consequences or prohibitions outside the scouts precluding them from holding jobs or volunteer roles around young people.

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA CONSIDERING FILING FOR BANKRUPTCY, REPORTS SAY

Anderson announced Tuesday he was releasing the names of 130 men from New York and 50 from New Jersey who were identified in the files.

In a statement to Fox News on Tuesday, the Boy Scouts of America said: “We care deeply about all victims of child abuse and sincerely apologize to anyone who was harmed during their time in Scouting.”

"Throughout our history, we have enacted strong youth protection policies to prevent future abuse, including mandatory youth protection trainings and a formal leader-selection process that includes criminal background checks," the statement said. "Since the 1920s, we have maintained a Volunteer Screening Database to prevent individuals accused of abuse or inappropriate conduct from joining or re-entering our programs, a practice recommended in 2007 by the Centers for Disease Control for all youth-serving organizations."

The statement concluded by saying “at no time have we ever knowingly allowed a perpetrator to work with youth, and we mandate that all leaders, volunteers and staff members nationwide immediately report any abuse allegation to law enforcement.”

Inmate pleads guilty in stabbing attack on prison guard

A man already convicted in three slayings and serving a life sentence has pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated murder and other charges in an attack on an Ohio prison guard.

Casey Pigge (pij) has been sentenced to 32 more years in prison.

Pigge pleaded guilty Wednesday in Scioto County in the Feb. 20, 2018, attack on Matthew Mathias. Authorities said Pigge and a co-defendant attacked the officer at Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville as he was escorting them to the prison infirmary.

Prosecutors say Mathias was stabbed 32 times with knives made of metal from the inmates' beds.

The Chillicothe (chihl-ih-KAHTH'-ee) Gazette reports Pigge appeared to show no remorse Wednesday, saying "it is what it is."

Prison officials say Pigge and his co-defendant are both on hunger strikes, alleging overly harsh treatment by guards.

MONTREAL/OTTAWA (Reuters) – Rising waters were prompting further evacuations in central Canada on Thursday, with the mayor of the country’s capital, Ottawa, declaring a state of emergency and Quebec authorities warning that a hydroelectric dam was at risk of breaking.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson declared the emergency in response to rising water levels along the Ottawa River and weather forecasts that called for significant rainfall on Friday.

In a statement on Twitter, Watson asked for help from the Ontario provincial government and the country’s military.

He warned that “flood levels are currently forecasted to exceed the levels that caused significant damage to numerous properties in the city of Ottawa in 2017.”

Spring flooding had killed one person and forced more than 900 people from their homes in Canada’s Quebec province as of 1 p.m. on Thursday, according to a government website.

Ottawa has received 80 requests for service related to potential flooding such as sandbagging, a city spokeswoman said.

The prospect of more rain over the next 24 to 48 hours triggered concerns on Thursday that the hydroelectric dam at Bell Falls in the western part of Quebec could be at risk of failing because of rising water levels.

Quebec’s provincial police said 250 people were protectively removed from homes in the area as of late afternoon in case the dam on the Rouge River breaks.

The dam is now at its full flow capacity of 980 cubic meters per second of water, said Francis Labbé, a spokesman for the province’s state-owned utility, Hydro Quebec. He said Hydro Quebec expected the flow could rise to 1,200 cubic meters per second of water over the next two days.

“We have to take the worst-case scenario into consideration, since we`re already at the maximum capacity,” Labbé said by phone.

The dam is part of a power station that no longer produces electricity, but is regularly inspected by Hydro Quebec, he said.

BELFAST (Reuters) – Detectives investigating the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Northern Ireland last week suspect the gunman who shot her dead is in his late teens as they made a further appeal to the local community who they believe know his identity.

McKee’s killing by an Irish nationalist militant during a riot in Londonderry has sparked outrage in the province where a 1998 peace deal mostly ended three decades of sectarian violence that cost the lives of some 3,600 people.

The New IRA, one of a small number of groups that oppose the peace accord, has said one of its members shot the 29-year-old reporter dead in the Creggan area of the city on Thursday when opening fire on police during a riot McKee was watching.

The killing, which followed a large car bomb in Londonderry in January that police also blamed on the New IRA, has raised fears that small marginalized militant groups are exploiting a political vacuum in the province and tensions caused by Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

Police released footage on Friday of immediately before and after the shooting showing three men who were involved in the rioting and identified one as the gunman who they believe is in his late teens.

“I believe that the information that can help us to bring those responsible for her murder to justice lies within the community. I need the public to tell me who he is,” Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy told reporters.

Murphy said those involved in the disorder on the night were teenagers or in their early 20s, and that about 100 people were on the ground watching the trouble as it unfolded.

He added that police believed the gun used in the attack was of a similar caliber to those used before in paramilitary type attacks in Creggan.

“I recognize that people living in Creagan may find it’s difficult to come forward to speak to police. Today, I want to provide a personal reassurance that we are able to deal with those issues sensitively,” Murphy said, echoing similar appeals in recent days.

(Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures were flat on Friday, as investors paused ahead of GDP data, which is expected to show the world’s largest economy maintained a moderate pace of growth in the first quarter.

Gross domestic product probably increased at a 2% annualized rate in the quarter as a burst in exports, strong inventory stockpiling and government investment in public construction projects offset a slowdown in consumer and business spending, according to a Reuters survey of economists.

The Commerce Department report will be published at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The GDP data comes as investors look for fresh catalysts to push the markets higher. The S&P 500 index is about 0.5% below its record high hit in late September, after surging nearly 17% this year.

First-quarter earnings have been largely upbeat, with nearly 78% of the 178 companies that have reported so far surpassing earnings estimates, according to Refinitiv data.

Wall Street now expects S&P 500 earnings to be in line with the year-ago quarter, a sharp improvement from the 2.3% fall expected at the start of April.

Amazon.com Inc rose 0.9% in premarket trading after the e-commerce giant reported quarterly profit that doubled and beat estimates on soaring demand for its cloud and ad services.

Ford Motor Co shares surged 8.5% after the automaker posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings largely due to strong pickup truck sales in its core U.S. market.

Mattel Inc jumped 8% after the toymaker beat analysts’ estimates for quarterly revenue, as a more diverse range of Barbie dolls powered sales in the United States.

At 6:52 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 35 points, or 0.13%. S&P 500 e-minis were down 1.5 points, or 0.05% and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 10.75 points, or 0.14%.

Among decliners, Intel Corp slumped 7.7% after it cut its full-year revenue forecast and missed quarterly sales estimate for its key data center business.

Rival Advanced Micro Devices declined 0.8%.

Oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp are expected to report results later in the day.

WARSAW (Reuters) – Germany could owe Poland more than $850 billion in reparations for damages it incurred during World War Two and the brutal Nazi occupation, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Germany, one of Poland’s biggest trade partners and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO, says all financial claims linked to World War Two have been settled.

The right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) has revived calls for compensation since it took power in 2015 and has made the promotion of Poland’s wartime victimhood a central plank of its appeal to nationalism.

PiS has yet to make an official demand for reparations but its combative stance towards Germany has strained relations.

“Poland lost not only millions of its citizens but it was also destroyed in an unusually brutal way,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who heads the Polish parliamentary committee on reparations, told Reuters in an interview.

“Many (victims) are still alive and feel deeply wronged.”

His comments come a month before European Parliament elections in which populist and nationalist parties are expected to do well. Poland will also hold national elections later this year, with PiS still well ahead of its rivals in opinion polls.

EU LARGESSE

Mularczyk said the reparations figure could amount to more than 10 times the estimated 100 billion euros ($111 billion) that Poland has received so far in European Union funds since it joined the bloc in 2004.

Germany is the biggest net donor to the EU budget and some Germans regard its contributions as generous compensation to recipient countries like Poland which suffered under Nazi rule.

In 1953 Poland’s then-communist rulers relinquished all claims to war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to free East Germany, also a Soviet satellite, from any liabilities. PiS says that agreement is invalid because Poland was unable to negotiate fair compensation.

Mularczyk said his committee hoped to complete its report on the reparations issue by Sept. 1, the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s invasion.

Accusing Berlin of playing “diplomatic games” over the issue, he said: “The matter is being swept under the rug (by Germany) … until it’ll be wiped from the memory, from people’s awareness.”

His comments come after the Greek parliament voted this month to seek billions of euros in German reparations for the Nazi occupation of their country.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States did not pay any money to North Korea as it sought the release of comatose American student Otto Warmbier.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump had approved payment of a $2 million bill from North Korea to cover its care of the college student, who died shortly after he was returned to the United States after 17 months in a North Korean prison.
