(Reuters) – British low-cost airline easyJet said on Monday that macroeconomic uncertainty and many unanswered questions surrounding Brexit were driving weaker customer demand in the market, hurting ticket yields across Europe.

The carrier, the largest operator at Britain’s second-biggest airport Gatwick, said its outlook for the second half of the year was now more cautious.

April 22, 2019

Right fielder Aaron Judge became the 13th New York Yankees player to hit the injured list as the team officially took the slugger out of action for at least 10 days on Sunday with a left oblique strain.

The Yankees recalled infielder Thairo Estrada to take Judge’s place on the roster.

Judge injured himself on a swing in the sixth inning of Saturday’s 9-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. He hit a home run earlier in the game, his fifth of the season.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone called it a “significant” oblique strain, but no timetable has been given for Judge’s return.

–Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Matt Shoemaker will miss the rest of the season because of a torn left ACL, according to multiple reports.

Shoemaker, 32, was off to a terrific start this season with a 3-0 record and a 1.57 ERA in five games. He injured his knee on a freak play Saturday while chasing after the Oakland Athletics’ Matt Chapman in a rundown.

It was the latest setback for the veteran, who made only seven starts with the Los Angeles Angels last season because of a forearm strain. He also fractured his skull in 2016 when a line drive hit him in the head.

–The Tampa Bay Rays made a flurry of roster moves, including placing outfielder Austin Meadows on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right thumb.

Meadows was injured on a slide into third base while hitting a triple in the seventh inning of Saturday’s game against the Red Sox. He was replaced on the roster by infielder Joey Wendle, who was activated from the IL amid his recovery from a strained left hamstring.

The Rays also placed right-handed reliever Hunter Wood on the paternity list, while sending right-hander Jake Faria to Triple-A Durham. Right-hander Emilio Pagan was recalled from Durham, as was utility man Andrew Velazquez.

–Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Mike Moustakas was out of the lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers after X-rays uncovered a fracture at the tip of his right ring finger.

The Brewers elected not to put the veteran on the injured list just yet, considering him day-to-day.

“He is pretty sore today, but it doesn’t change the timeframe for him,” manager Craig Counsell said. “We’ll see how it responds. It’s really a (pain-)tolerant thing, but if it’s going to be really sore and we have to give him 10 days, we will.”

Chinese visit to Italy seeks closer ties, stirs suspicions

At the heart of Chinese Premier Xi Jingping's visit to Rome beginning Thursday is a key prize: A deal to make Italy the first major democracy to join China's ambitious Belt and Road infrastructure project that has raised concerns about Beijing's growing economic clout.

Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte has pledged to sign the memorandum of understanding on Saturday, despite objections from U.S. allies and doubts within the coalition government that it could give China greater political influence in Europe and the West.

But Xi's visit, at the invitation of Italian President Sergio Mattarella, also aims more broadly at deepening trade and cultural ties. Conte has even suggested that Italy could play a role in easing tensions over trade between China and the United States.

Mattarella told the Chinese stat-run news agency Xinhua Thursday that the visit is an expression of the "solidity of the bond and mutual respect" between the two countries, which will celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2020.

Xi's visit includes a meeting with Mattarella and a wreath-laying at Italy's monument for unknown soldiers on Friday. On Saturday, Conte will sign the infrastructure deal and Xi will visit the Sicilian city of Palermo before departing Sunday.

Here's a look what's at stake with the visit.

____

INFRASTRUCTURE

Italy's signature on the ambitious "Belt and Road" infrastructure-building project would give legitimacy to a project that envisions overland and maritime routes connecting China with Europe, reviving the old Silk Road traveled by Marco Polo in the Middle Ages. The initiative encompasses about 60 countries through Asia and Africa to Europe.

Conte has dismissed concerns that signing the framework with China would downgrade Italy's strategic ties with Europe and the United States, saying its focus was more commercial and on encouraging trade with China.

The White House has criticized the deal, saying it is weighted in China's interests. Italy's European allies have declined to sign a joint declaration on the "Belt and Road," saying it lacks standards on financing and transparency.

While full details have not been released, it includes collaboration and investments in the northern Italian ports of Genoa and Trieste as well as roads, railways, airports and telecommunications.

"Our two countries may harness our historical and cultural bonds forged through the ancient Silk Road," Xi wrote in the Corriere della Sera newspaper this week.

____

TECHNOLOGY

Key Italian officials have insisted that the issue of expanding Chinese company Huawei's 5G network into Italy is not part of the "Belt and Road" memorandum.

The Chinese 5-G network is viewed with suspicion, mainly by the U.S. government, which says it could give Chinese security services a backdoor to snoop on consumers. The issue is a major source of tension between China and the U.S.

While European countries have balked at banning Huawei outright from participating in the creation of the new 5G networks, one key member of Italy's government, Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, shares the concerns, saying nothing in the memorandum can threaten Italians' data.

____

CULTURE

Ahead of the visit, Xi noted that China and Italy are the countries with the largest number of UNESCO world heritage sites, sharing both cultural and tourism resources. He suggested that the two countries could form "twinning relationships" between world heritage sites and cooperate on art exhibitions, TV and movie production, language course and travel.

Mattarella said that the heritage of Italy and China both "arouse admiration around the world" and could help develop the economy.

The two countries are expected to soon announce the pairing of the Langhe, Roero and Monferrato wine region in Piedmont with China's Honghe Hani rice terraces, while Verona and Hangzhou are to establish sister-city relationships.

Culture and tourism officials will be meeting Saturday on the sidelines of Xi's visit.

____

TRADE

Conte said he aims to rebalance trade with China. Currently 1 billion Chinese consumers provide a market for 13 billion euros (nearly $15 billion) in Italian goods, while Italy's 60 million people buy 60 billion euros in Chinese-made products each year.

Italy's undersecretary for economic development, Michele Geraci, says Italy lags its European partners in trade with China by 15 or 20 years, and that the aim is to increase Italian exports to China by 7 billion euros, putting Italy in line with France.

Mattarella said that Italy sees China "not only as an economic partner of prime importance, but also as a driver of global trade," and a market for Italian technology and expertise in areas like environmental protection, food security, health services and machinery. He called for "open and transparent" trade with both countries acting "on an equal basis."

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wang Chao said the "Belt and Road" deal would be beneficial for both countries' economic development and trade.

However, Francois Godement, a specialist in Chinese politics at the Paris Institute of Political Studies, called such claims "bogus," because Chinese companies already have significant investments in Italy.

Factbox: Smoke or fire? Contacts between Trump campaign and Russia

By Andy Sullivan

(Reuters) – Special Counsel Robert Mueller and other U.S. prosecutors have been investigating whether President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign conspired with Russia. Trump and Moscow have denied any collusion.

Mueller handed in the keenly awaited report on his probe, the Justice Department said on Friday.

U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded Russia interfered in the presidential election with a campaign of hacking and propaganda to sow discord in the United States and damage the Republican Trump’s Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton. Russia denies it.

Here are some key interactions between Trump advisors and Russian figures that have been unearthed by Mueller’s probe and investigations in Congress.

TRUMP TOWER MEETING

Several top Trump aides, including campaign chairman Paul Manafort, son-in-law Jared Kushner and son Donald Trump Jr., met in June 2016 at Trump Tower in New York with a Russian lawyer who had offered damaging information about Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. U.S. prosecutors said the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, was an agent for the Kremlin. The meeting was arranged by Rob Goldstone, a British music publicist. Participants in the meeting said nothing improper occurred and that Veselnitskaya discussed U.S. sanctions on Russia and adoption policy, not election issues. The president said he did not know about the meeting beforehand.

EFFORTS TO BUILD A SKYSCRAPER IN MOSCOW

Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, said he pursued a deal to build a Trump-branded skyscraper in Moscow until June 2016, after Trump had clinched the Republican presidential nomination. Cohen said in a guilty plea that he spoke with an assistant to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s press secretary in January of that year and briefed Trump on the project more than three times.

Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, said the Moscow skyscraper talks continued until Trump won the November 2016 election but later said he misspoke.

Trump, who repeatedly said during the campaign that he had no contacts with Russia, said after Cohen’s guilty plea in November 2018 there was nothing wrong with pursuing the deal.

EFFORTS TO SET UP A MEETING WITH RUSSIAN LEADERS

Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos worked between March 2016 and August 2016 to set up a meeting with Russian leadership, according to prosecutors. They said a London-based professor with ties to the Russian government told him in April 2016 that Moscow had compromising information on Clinton.

Papadopoulos served 14 days in prison after pleading guilty to lying to the FBI about those efforts.

MANAFORT OFFERS CAMPAIGN INSIGHTS

Manafort shared election campaign polling data in August 2016 with Konstantin Kilimnik, a former business partner who Mueller has described as having ties to Russian intelligence, according to a court filing inadvertently made public by Manafort’s lawyers. The two also discussed a plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, a major Kremlin foreign policy goal as it seeks relief from U.S. economic sanctions, according to court filings.

Manafort, a veteran Republican political consultant who earned million of dollars working for pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine, also offered private briefings about the campaign to Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska, who is close to Putin, in an effort to collect past debts, according to the Washington Post.

ROGER STONE AND WIKILEAKS

Roger Stone, a veteran Republican political consultant who has worked on and off with Trump for decades, shared with Trump campaign officials advance knowledge he had of a plan by the WikiLeaks website to release emails stolen from the Clinton campaign by Russians, prosecutors said. The charging document mentions that a senior Trump campaign official “was directed to contact Stone about any additional releases and what other damaging information” WikiLeaks had about the Clinton campaign, raising the possibility Trump himself made the request. Stone pleaded not guilty to lying to Congress and witness tampering.

MEETINGS WITH RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR SERGEI KISLYAK

Several Trump advisers met with Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Sergei Kislyak, before Trump became president.

They included: Michael Flynn, who served as Trump’s first White House national security advisor. Flynn has pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his communications with Kislyak in December 2017, after Trump won the election but before he took office. During those calls, according to the indictment, Flynn discussed U.S. sanctions against Russia and asked Kislyak to help delay a U.N. vote seen as damaging to Israel, a move that ran counter to the policies of then-President Barack Obama, a Democrat.

Jeff Sessions, a Republican U.S. senator serving as a campaign adviser who Trump later named attorney general, said he met with Kislyak at least twice in 2016 after initially telling Congress he was unaware of any communications between the campaign and Russia. As attorney general, Sessions recused himself from oversight of the Russia investigation, drawing the ire of Trump. The recusal by Sessions left Rod Rosenstein, the No. 2 Justice Department official, with oversight over the probe, which at the time was headed by the FBI. After Trump fired FBI Director James Comey in May 2017, Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel to take over the probe.

Kushner said he asked Kislyak if he could set up a secure communications channel at the Russian Embassy after Trump won the election. Kushner also said he met with Sergei Gorkov, the head of Russian state-owned bank, Vnesheconombank, during that period at Kislyak’s insistence. Vnesheconombank has been subject to U.S. economic sanctions since mid-2014.

Ohio pulls Planned Parenthood funding after court upholds 2016 abortion law

The state of Ohio is cutting state funds to Planned Parenthood, three years after an anti-abortion state funding law was passed.

Planned Parenthood locations in the state received notices from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) that state funding would end in April. This comes after a divided federal appeals court upheld an anti-abortion law that blocked public money for the group. The law passed in 2016 and was signed by former Gov. John Kasich.

COUPLE SUES PLANNED PARENTHOOD FOR CHILD SUPPORT AFTER FAILED ABORTION

Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio President Iris Harvey called the decision "heartless" on Twitter. But ODH Director Amy Acton maintains that "enforcing the law now will not harm Planned Parenthood, as it breaks even or loses money on the disputed programs."

The department notified the organization's 26 locations last week that funding will end on April 20, unless the court delays the effect of its ruling, as Planned Parenthood has requested.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD ACCUSED OF MISTREATING PREGNANT EMPLOYEES: REPORT

The law requires the department to ensure that state and certain federal funds aren't "used to perform or promote nontherapeutic abortions."

Last year, ODH gave about $600,000 in grants to Planned Parenthood, according to a spokesman for the department.

ABORTION SURVIVORS ON NEW LATE-TERM ABORTION BILLS: 'WHERE WERE MY RIGHTS IN THE WOMB?'

The state gave Planned Parenthood 30 days to comply with the law, which was originally supposed to go into effect on May 2016. But it stalled after Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region sued, claiming they do not use public money to fund abortion procedures.

Parent Parenthood argued it provides health services to indigent patients, including testing for HIV/AID, Pap smears and cancer screenings, at little to no costs. The agency said if funding was cut, the patients they help would be left without care.

In the lawsuit, the state said other clinics could also provide the same services.

"Ohio has already been forced to support Planned Parenthood and similar entities with three years of funding to which they were not entitled," Acton wrote.

JOY VILLA WEARS 'F--K PLANNED PARENTHOOD' DRESS AT ANTI-ABORTION FILM 'UNPLANNED' PREMIERE

Harvey blasted the decision.

"Gov DeWine is HEARTLESS," Harvey wrote on Twitter. "Just got a 30 day notice from Health Dept. Defunding Planned Parenthood work to reduce Black infant mortality, prevent violence against women, provide cancer screenings, HIV tests and sex education! All care health depts couldn’t do!"

Belgium apologizes for role in African kidnappings

The Belgian government has apologized for the country's role in kidnapping babies from their African mothers during colonial times.

Thousands of children in what are now the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi were taken away and raised in Belgian institutions.

Prime Minister Charles Michel said in a statement Thursday that "on behalf of the federal government, I present our apologies to the mixed-race children born from Belgian colonization and their families for the injustice and suffering they were subjected to."

He expressed "compassion for the African mothers, whose children were torn away from them," and concern for the emotional horror the children went through.

He said he hoped the recognition would be a step toward a collective national reckoning and in fighting racism.

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.

Hundreds of Cuban migrants are reported to be on the run Friday in Mexico after a crowd of more than 1,000 burst out of a troubled immigration detention center on its southern border.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said the mass escape Thursday in Tapachula – which the Associated Press called the largest in recent memory — involved around 1,300 Cuban migrants, although 700 of them have since returned voluntarily.

The migrants reportedly streamed out of the compound without any resistance, as the institute said its agents weren’t armed and “there was no confrontation.”

Federal police with riot shields later rushed in to control the situation, as a crowd of angry Cubans whose relatives were being held at the facility gathered outside. The Cubans claimed their relatives reported overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at the facility.

BORDER PATROL UNION CHIEF BLASTS CONGRESS OVER MIGRANT CARAVANS: ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT’?

“My wife and child have been in there for 27 days in bad conditions,” said Usmoni Velazquez Vallejo, as he waited outside for news. “There is overcrowding, insufficient food and there isn’t even medicine for them.”

Another Cuban detainee told the AFP: “We have many there… we are very tight, we sleep on the floor.”

It’s the third time since October that migrants at the facility staged an uprising, according to the news agency.

The center’s holding capacity is officially listed at less than 1,000 people, but the escape of 1,300 meant it was probably at least at double its capacity, since not everyone being held there escaped. Residents in the area said that sometimes the facility has held as many as 3,000 people, and a Mexican newspaper cited by Reuters said Haitians and Central Americans also are among the large group who still have not been tracked down.

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

The Washington Post’s media critic went into meltdown after White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders held a mock press briefing for the children of White House journalists and employees on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

Erik Wemple, the newspaper’s chief media critic, slammed Sanders and the White House for organizing a fun day on Thursday for junior would-be journalists, while not holding an actual press conference for the record number of days.

WHITE HOUSE STAFF TO SKIP CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER AFTER LAST YEAR’S CONTROVERSY

Wemple wrote that Sanders gave to children an important lesson of “the centrality of nonaccountability mechanisms in the affairs of state” after she announced that the mock press briefing was “off the record.”

“When the children head home tonight, perhaps they can pull up archival footage to see how their questions stack up against ye olde press briefings,” he added.

“Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

— Erik Wemple

“Tuesday, after all, marked a record for number of days without a White House press briefing. Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

While some correspondents praised the White House for doing “a lot of work to welcome the children and provide “them an excellent experience,” other journalists echoed Wemple’s criticism and pointed out that Sanders hasn’t held a press briefing in over 40 days.

“Kids of WH Press Corps members are getting ready for a briefing with  @PressSec. Their parents have not had one in 45 days,” tweeted CBS News’ White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang.

REPORTER SHOUTS AT SARAH SANDERS AFTER BRIEFING: ‘DO YOUR JOB, SARAH!’

“The irony of it is that they’re pretending that the White House press briefing is a thing, and they’re pretending that this is how the White House operates, but this is not at all how the White House operates … It’s a relic of an earlier time,” another correspondent quoted by the Post said.

The Post struck a different tune in a column earlier this year, which declared that despite the administration’s criticism of the media, President Trump was “extremely accessible.”

Wemple quoted Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project, who said that Trump held 338 “short question-and-answer” sessions over his time in office, significantly more than 75 such sessions by former President Barack Obama during his first full two years in office.
