Chechen religious leaders re-open landmark mosque in Syria

Religious leaders of Russia's republic of Chechnya have inaugurated a re-opened landmark mosque in Syria's Homs, once the symbol of the rebellion against President Bashar Assad.

In 2013, Syrian government forces captured the Khalid Ibn al-Walid mosque, which sustained heavy damage in the fighting.

Authorities of Russia's mostly Muslim republic of Chechnya undertook the reconstruction efforts for this and other major mosques in Syria, following the start of Russia's military campaign there in 2015. The funds are coming from a murky foundation run by the family of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

Chechen television on Thursday showed footage of the re-opening ceremony, which took place Wednesday. Chechnya's chief mufti Salah Mezhiyev expressed his greetings to Syrian officials and thanked them for the chance to rebuild the mosque.

Former Fed chair Yellen says yield curve may signal need to cut rates, not a recession

March 25, 2019

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Former U.S. Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen said on Monday the U.S. Treasury yield curve may signal the need to cut interest rates at some point, but it does not signal a recession.

Yellen, who led the Fed between 2014 and 2018, was speaking at the Credit Suisse Asian Investment Conference in Hong Kong.

The yield curve inverted on Friday for the first time since mid-2007, a shift that has in the past signaled the risk of recession. The slope regained its ascendancy in European trading on Monday after stronger-than-expected German data.

Charles Evans, a voting member of the Fed’s policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee, told the same conference on Monday that it was understandable for markets to be nervous when the yield curve flattened.

Man who sent powder-filled letters to Trump sons gets probation

A Massachusetts man who sent threatening letters filled with white powder to President Trump’s sons and a Democratic U.S. senator was sentenced to probation Friday.

Daniel Frisiello, 25, of Beverly, was sentenced to five years of probation, with one year to serve in home detention with location monitoring and restitution, law enforcement sources told Fox News.

Frisiello pleaded guilty in October 2018 to 13 counts of mailing a threat to injure the person and six counts of false information and hoaxes.

He was arrested early last year after sending a letter filled with white powder to Donald Trump Jr in February 2018.

This booking photo released Thursday, March 1, 2018, by the Beverly Police Department shows Daniel Frisiello, of Beverly, Mass., accused of mailing five envelopes containing a white powder. Prosecutors are seeking three years in prison for Frisiello who admitted to sending threatening letters filled with white powder to President Donald Trump’s sons and others. Frisiello is set to be sentenced Friday, April 19, 2019, in Boston federal court.

Trump Jr.’s now-ex-wife, Vanessa Trump, opened the letter and was briefly hospitalized after being exposed to the powder. Vanessa reportedly began coughing and feeling nauseous, however, she was soon cleared by doctors and the substance in the letter was found to be cornstarch.

LETTER WITH WHITE POWDER FOR TRUMP JR. CALLS HIM 'AWFUL,' SAYS HE'LL GET WHAT HE 'DESERVES'

Authorities said the letter included a threatening note that read: “You are an awful, awful person. I am surprised that your father lets you speak on TV. You are the family idiot, Eric looks smart.”

“This is the reason why people hate you, so you are getting what you deserve,” the note contained.

Other recipients included President Trump’s other son, Eric Trump, actor Antonio Sabato Jr. and Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan.

Officials said they were able to track Frisiello down after examining a “glitter bomb” he allegedly sent to Michelle Dauber, a Stanford University law professor who supported an effort to recall a judge who made headlines when he sentenced a college student six months for sexual assault.

DONALD TRUMP JR. HITS NEWSWEEK, SUGGESTS MILLIONS OF ITS TWITTER FOLLOWERS ARE FAKE

Authorities said the font used in the letter sent to Dauber matched the lettering in the notes filled with white powder.

On Friday, Federal Judge Nathaniel Gorton said he declined to send Frisiello to prison because of concerns the 25-year-old would not respond well to incarceration. Frisiello's lawyer has said the man is developmentally disabled. But Groton stressed the sentence wasn't "lenient"

Frisiello thanked Groton and said the past year has been "hell" for his family. Prosecutors objected to the sentence.

During the period of probation, Frisiello is prohibited from contacting victims in the case, sending letters through the mail, accessing the internet, and possessing and accessing computers.

Hogan Gidley on Nadler’s push for unredacted Mueller report: ‘This is just more political grandstanding’

Deputy White House Press Secretary Hogan Gidley said Friday House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler’s push for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s “complete and unredacted” Russia report is “just more political grandstanding.”

Gidley made the comments on “America’s Newsroom” when he was asked if the White House has a problem giving Nadler the full, unredacted report.

Nadler, D-N.Y., issued a subpoena Friday to obtain the "complete and unredacted" version of Mueller's report, as well as the underlying materials.

“I’m shocked,” Gidley said sarcastically.

HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE ISSUES SUBPOENA FOR 'COMPLETE AND UNREDACTED' MUELLER REPORT

He added, “Jerry Nadler is irrelevant in the situation. The American people now know that regardless of what the Democrats were saying about the president, lies they were telling with zero evidence and zero proof, now he wants to go deeper. When does this ever stop? I mean, if we gave him the unredacted report, if we gave him all the tax returns unredacted as well, he would still want something else.”

Gidley was then asked again if he would have a problem releasing the full report.

“We are not going to deal with Jerry Nadler in that matter. We have already cooperated so much with the House Democrats and we’ll continue to do so,” Gidley said in response. “But the fact is, this is just more political grandstanding by someone who has nothing to run on, nothing to talk about, other than trying to attack a man who has now been proven completely innocent of any crime.”

After two years of suspense, Mueller’s report was released into Washington’s partisan scrum Thursday showing investigators did not find evidence of collusion between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia – as Attorney General Bill Barr declared last month – but also revealing an array of controversial actions by the president that were examined as part of the investigation’s obstruction inquiry.

Mueller ultimately did not reach a conclusion on whether the president's conduct amounted to obstruction, stating: "[W]hile this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him."

On Friday, Gidley also reacted to Rep. Adam Schiff’s, D-Calif., recent claim that "significant evidence of collusion" existed.

BIDEN EXPECTED TO DECLARE 2020 BID ON WEDNESDAY: SOURCES

“Yesterday he was on another network and they asked him about moving to impeach the president and he sided with Nancy Pelosi. She said it wouldn't be worthwhile, quote unquote, to do that, but he said the reason we won’t is because we need overwhelming and demonstrable evidence against this president. Wait a minute. You've been on network television telling everyone you had this evidence,” said Gidley.

“Just like the special counsel, it's time to put up or shut up. If you have the evidence, show it. The problem is, he doesn't, he knows it. He's been lying to the American people. He's been lying to all of us, accusing this president of treason for two and a half years.”

When asked if he welcomes Joe Biden into the 2020 race, Gidley answered, “Absolutely.”

He added, “The president is going to beat anyone and everyone who comes into this race.”

Joe Biden is expected to declare his candidacy for president next week, two sources with knowledge of the former vice president’s plans confirmed to Fox News on Friday.

BETO FEELS THE HEAT ON CAMPAIGN TRAIL AS RNC TWEET FALLS FLAT: Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke vowed Sunday that nothing from his questionable past will sidetrack his campaign ... On the campaign trail in Wisconsin, denied he'd ever taken the drug LSD and vowed to stop using profanities, particularly the F-word, especially in front of kids. The Republican National Committee sparked an uproar when it attempted to capitalize on O'Rourke's past transgressions by tweeting his 1998 drunken driving mugshot - with a photoshopped leprechaun hat atop - that read "Please drink responsibly." Fellow Republicans slammed the tweet as insensitive, especially since it was St. Patrick's Day.

WHITE HOUSE DISTANCES TRUMP FROM NEW ZEALAND MASSACRE: Acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney on Sunday defended President Trump against any attempts to link him to last Friday's terror attack on two New Zealand mosques that left 50 people dead ... In an interview on "Fox News Sunday," Mulvaney said Trump is not a white supremacist and it was unfair to characterize the New Zealand gunman arrested in the attack as a Trump supporter.

A FAILED 'POLITICAL STUNT': The top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee voted for the resolution calling for any final report in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation to be made public, but told Fox News on Sunday it was unnecessary -- because it was a failed attempt by Democrats to divide the GOP ... “It was a political stunt by the Democrats who felt that they could divide Republicans into voting no upon it," said Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., on "Sunday Morning Futures." The largely symbolic, Democratic-backed resolution, which passed 420-0, came as Mueller appears to be nearing an end to his investigation.

WHY THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS SCANDAL WAS INEVITABLE: One noted higher education critic says the widespread college admissions scandal that rocked the nation last week was bound to happen, simply because of the elitist nature and power structure of prestigious universities ... "The celebrity college-admissions cheating scandal has two clear takeaways: an elite college degree has taken on wildly inflated importance in American society, and the sports-industrial complex enjoys wildly inflated power within universities." writes Heather Mac Donald, contributing editor of City Journal in a piece appearing on FoxNews.com. "None of this could have happened if higher education had not itself become a corrupt institution, featuring low classroom demands, no core knowledge acquisition, low grading standards, fashionable (but society-destroying) left-wing activism, luxury-hotel amenities, endless partying, and huge expense." Meanwhile, actress Lori Loughlin's humble-bragging about money spent on daughter Olivia Jade’s education appears to have come back to haunt her.

DEVELOPMENT OF BOEING'S 737 MAX UNDER SCRUTINY: Federal prosecutors and Department of Transportation officials are examining the development of Boeing Co.’s 737 MAX jetliners, the Wall Street Journal reports ... At least one person involved in the 737 MAX's development, the Journal reports, was issued a broad subpoena by a Washington, D.C. grand jury on March 11, the day after the Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed all 157 people on board.

THE SOUNDBITE

BEWARE OF BETO -  "Take it from me as someone who has worked at the highest levels of government and politics. The most important thing about a candidate is not their promises - those hardly ever get delivered anyway. It's about how they would respond to unpredictable future events. And that's about their character. Whatever else people knew about Donald Trump going into 2016, it was obvious he was strong. He said what he thought, no matter who it offended. But Beto O'Rourke says whatever people want to hear." – Steve Hilton, on "The Next Revolution," on why he believes Beto O'Rourke is a dangerous 2020 candidate. North Korea’s Kim to meet Putin at crucial diplomatic moment

North Korea confirmed Tuesday that leader Kim Jong Un will soon visit Russia to meet with President Vladimir Putin in a summit that comes at a crucial moment for tenuous diplomacy meant to rid the North of its nuclear arsenal.

North Korea has so far not gotten what it wants most from the recent flurry of high-level summitry between Kim and various world leaders — namely, relief from crushing international sanctions. There are fears that a recent North Korean weapon test and a series of jibes at Washington over deadlocked nuclear negotiations mean that Pyongyang may again return to the nuclear and long-range missile tests that had many in Asia fearing war in 2017.

The North's state-run Korean Central News Agency released a terse, two-sentence statement saying Kim "will soon pay a visit to the Russian Federation," and that he and Putin "will have talks." A date for the meeting was not released, and it wasn't clear if Kim would fly or take his armored train. There are some indications the meeting will be held this week in the far-eastern port of Vladivostok, not too far from Russia's border with the North.

The Kremlin said in a brief statement last week that Kim will visit Russia "in the second half of April," but gave no further details.

It's not clear how — or even if — Putin will push the stalled nuclear talks along, and the visit may have more to do with each nation's economic interests. Russia is interested in gaining broader access to North Korea's mineral resources, including rare metals. Pyongyang, for its part, covets Russia's electricity supplies and wants to attract Russian investment to modernize its dilapidated industrial plants, railways and other infrastructure.

Kim and President Donald Trump have had two summits, but the latest, in Vietnam in February, collapsed because North Korea wanted more sanctions relief than Washington was willing to give for the amount of disarmament offered by Pyongyang.

For a leader often perceived by foreign media as isolated, Kim has had a remarkable string of summits, meeting with the leaders and other senior officials of South Korea, China, Vietnam and Singapore. He has also sent his deputies to Washington and received Trump's lieutenants in Pyongyang as part of nuclear talks.

But Kim's patience appears to be wearing thin. The North last week announced that it had tested what it called a new type of "tactical guided weapon." While unlikely to be a prohibited test of a medium- or long-range ballistic missile that could scuttle the negotiations, the announcement signaled the North's growing disappointment with the diplomatic breakdown.

The North also demanded that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo be removed from the talks, and on Saturday criticized White House national security adviser John Bolton for calling on North Korea to show more evidence of its disarmament commitment before a possible third leaders' summit.

In Ivory Coast, Ivanka Trump talks women’s rights

Ivanka Trump met with the vice president of Ivory Coast as part of a trip to Africa focused on women's economic development.

The president's daughter and senior adviser arrived in the country Tuesday, traveling from Ethiopia. She met with Vice President Daniel Kablan Duncan at the presidential palace.

Gender inequality is a serious issue in Ivory Coast. A 2018 gender gap report from the World Economic Forum ranked it 131 out of 144 countries. The government has pledged to improve conditions for women as part of the terms for a grant from the U.S. government-funded Millennium Challenge Corporation.

The White House said the meeting focused on Ivory Coast changes, including efforts on behalf of and current barriers for women.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

Lakewood police tweeted there were multiple fatalities but did not give a specific number. Six people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released, according to the paper.

Lanes in both directions were closed and expected to remain so into Friday morning.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s a look at what you need to know today …

EXCLUSIVE: Trump says ‘Sleepy Joe’ Biden doesn’t have what it takes

President Trump, in a wide-ranging, exclusive phone interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, dismissed the launch of former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Biden, the president said, has name recognition but he won’t “be able to do the job.” When asked about Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Trump criticized his record, saying Sanders had “misguided energy” and asserted that Sanders “talks a lot” but hasn’t accomplished anything. The president referred to former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas as “a fluke” who had lost much momentum and outright dismissed Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg — although he said he was “rooting” for Buttigieg. (Trump could address Biden and the other Democratic presidential candidates when he speaks today before the National Rifle Association.)

The Democratic Party’s youth movement: Biden’s biggest challenge?
Former Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Howard Dean warned Joe Biden about the troubles he may face in his presidential campaign, especially from the “35-year-olds” who Dean says have been running the party — a clear nod to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and fellow freshmen Democrats. “This is a very different party than even the party Joe Biden ran in in 2012. Very different,” Dean continued. “A lot of people could win this race. There’s 20 people in there. I think it’s going to take $20 million to get to the starting line. If you can’t raise $20 million, you’re gone, and I think that’s going to take care of about six or eight of these folks. … But it is not the same party that it was five years ago.” A progressive political group that boosted Ocasio-Cortez’s bid for Congress last year vowed to oppose Biden and blasted him as part of the “old guard.”

More tales from the FBI texts
Text messages between former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page indicate they discussed using briefings to the Trump team after the 2016 election to identify people they could “develop for potential relationships,” track lines of questioning and “assess” changes in “demeanor” – language one GOP lawmaker called “more evidence” of irregular conduct in the original Russia probe. Fox News has learned the texts, initially released in 2018 by a Senate committee, are under renewed scrutiny, with GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley and Homeland Security Committee chair Ron Johnson sending a letter Thursday night to Attorney General Bill Barr pushing for more information on the matter. President Trump, speaking on Fox News’ “Hannity” Thursday night, responded to this report by accusing Strzok and Page of an attempted “coup.” “They were trying to infiltrate the administration,” he said.

Kim accuses US of acting in ‘bad faith’
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, fresh off his summit with  Russian President Vladimir Putin, said the U.S. has been acting in “bad faith” since his Hanoi meeting with President Trump over the stalemated issue of North Korean denuclearization. The North Korean leader told the Korean Central News Agency that, “the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the region is now at a standstill and has reached a critical point,” the Straits Times of Singapore reported. Kim warned that the situation “may return to its original state as the U.S. took a unilateral attitude in bad faith at the recent second DPRK-US summit talks,” the Korean Central News Agency added.

NFL Draft 2019: It’s all about defense
The first round of the 2019 NFL Draft saw a run on defensive players, with eight of the top 12 picks in Nashville coming from that side of the ball. After Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was taken first overall by the Arizona Cardinals, the San Francisco 49ers started a run of four straight front-seven players by taking Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa with the second overall pick — the highest draft slot for any Buckeye since left tackle Orlando Pace went No. 1 overall to the St. Louis Rams in 1997.
