British backpacker died from 'traumatic brain injury' in Guatemala, autopsy report says

A 23-year-old British backpacker whose body was found Monday near a highland lake in Guatemala popular with tourists died of hemorrhaging resulting from a traumatic brain injury, according to an autopsy report.

The National Institute of Forensic Sciences of Guatemala said in a statement that Catherine Shaw had died 4 to 6 days earlier.

Shaw, from Witney, England, was staying in San Pedro La Laguna, about 50 miles west of Guatemala City. Police announced Monday that her body had been found unclothed and in a state of decomposition in the brush near a mountain overlook.

She was last seen alive taking a puppy for a walk in the early hours on March 5 before her body was discovered, Sky News reported.

A doctor who performed the examination on Shaw said her body showed signs of trauma but no apparent gunshot or stab wounds.

"In the preliminary findings, there are no wounds from bullets or sharp weapons," Miguel Angel Samayoa told The Associated Press. "There are blows to the body."

Catherine Shaw had been traveling since last September.

The Lucie Blackman Trust, which has been assisting Shaw's family, issued a statement urging people not to speculate about her death and saying it may have been a "tragic accident" not involving foul play.

It added that Shaw had been fasting for days before her disappearance and "disposing of possessions, including clothing."

"She was very much a nature lover and adored sunrises, so it seems quite conceivable that she went up the mountain to greet the sunrise, shedding clothing as she went, and due to her lack of intake of food and fluid may have passed out or fallen, causing the wounds to her body," the statement added, cautioning that not all the facts are known and nothing can be ruled out.

Paying tribute to their daughter, Shaw's parents Ann and Tarquin said the 23-year-old "just loved mountains and sunrises" and "she died doing what she loved."

The British Embassy confirmed with the Asscoiated Press that Tarquin Shaw, the woman's father, identified the body Tuesday in Guatemala, and said it was working with local authorities and assisting the family.

Americans would see impeachment as a ‘limp attempt at a soft coup:’ Joe Concha

As the divide widens between Democrats rallying for and against launching impeachment proceedings against President Trump, media reporter Joe Concha argued the party's leadership knows that the ramifications from the American people would not be desirable.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi unequivocally denounced impeachment proceedings on Monday, distancing herself from the likes of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Kamala Harris who have all voiced their support for the move. Referencing former President Bill Clinton's impeachment, Concha asserted his belief that should the same happen to Trump, it would make him a sympathetic figure and cast a vindictive light on the Democratic party.

"Nancy Pelosi has seen this, and she knows the ramifications for the party that tries to carry it out," Concha said during an appearance on "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday morning.

PELOSI FACES MOUNTING TRUMP IMPEACHMENT PRESSURE FROM DEM RANKS AFTER MUELLER REPORT

"It will be seen basically by half of the American people as a limp attempt at soft coup at removing a president that they know they don't have the votes for in the Senate," he continued.

Furthermore, those who voted for the Democrats in November want to see them "solve problems, not go down this road," and that the American people "don't have an appetite for it," Concha claimed.

On Monday, Democrat leaders decided against launching impeachment proceedings against the president following a party meeting.

Pelosi and her leadership team were clear there were no immediate plans to move forward with impeachment, Fox News was told. Well-placed sources said it was a spirited 87-minute call involving more than 170 Democrat members, including House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff and House Oversight Committee Chair Elijah Cummings.

"We have to save our democracy," Pelosi said, according to the sources. "This isn’t about Democrats or Republicans. It’s about saving our democracy. If it is what we need to do to honor our responsibility to the Constitution – if that’s the place the facts take us, that’s the place we have to go."

Pelosi asserted that more investigations were needed: "We don’t have to go to articles of impeachment to obtain the facts, the presentation of facts.”

Firefighters contain fire in China’s mountains where 30 died

Firefighters have contained a blaze high in the rugged forested mountains of western China that claimed the lives of 30 of their colleagues.

State media say open flames had been extinguished and only a few areas continued to emit smoke as of Tuesday with no further threat of the fire spreading.

The bodies of the dead firefighters were brought to the town of Xichang in Sichuan province, while three helicopters had brought in reinforcements to extinguish the blaze for good.

Changing winds Sunday apparently trapped the 27 firefighters and three helpers.

The death toll appeared to be the worst among firefighters since 2015, when an explosion at a chemical warehouse in the port of Tianjin killed 173 people, most of them firefighters and other first responders.

Rep. Pete King: 'Shameful' Dem Candidates Staying Away From AIPAC

It's "shameful" that several 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls plan to attend this year's American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference, and it shows there's a wing of the party base that is anti-Israel, Rep. Pete King said Friday.

"They are putting enormous pressure on these presidential candidates," the New York Republican told Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime." "In many ways, the Democratic leadership in the House caved into this type of pressure two weeks ago after they wouldn't initiate the denunciation of what Congresswoman [Ilhan] Omar said, without linking it with every other group in the world."

Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, have all said they won't be attending the AIPAC three-day conference starting Sunday in Washington D.C. In addition, former Beto O'Rourke, and John Delaney have also said they won't attend.

Delaney blamed a scheduling conflict, but a Sanders' policy director, Josh Orton, said he won't go because he is concerned about the platform AIPAC provides for leaders "who have expressed bigotry and oppose a two-state solution, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Democrats such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are not anti-Israel or anti-Jewish, said King, but there is still a wing of the party who is. Both reportedly plan to attend the event.

"We need to stand with our closest ally in the Middle East, which is the most dangerous region in the world," said King. "Nobody has to agree with every stand that AIPAC takes. The fact is that, as a centrist organization and for none of these currents down my candidates to peers really shameful. It shows this BDS Movement, the pro-Palestinian, critical of Israel movement, has really taken hold."

Bank of Canada working group proposes CORRA enhancements

February 26, 2019

TORONTO (Reuters) – A Bank of Canada working group proposes expanding the range of transactions used in the calculation of the Canadian Overnight Repo Rate Average (CORRA) interest-rate benchmark, according to a consultation paper published by the central bank on Tuesday.

The Canadian Alternative Reference Rate Working Group (CARR) has proposed that CORRA, a risk-free overnight rate based on transactions in the repo market, would be based on all overnight repo transactions that use Government of Canada bonds and treasury bills as collateral, the Bank of Canada said.

The consultation paper also introduces a new methodology for calculating CORRA. It recommends that an enhanced CORRA be based on the trimmed median repo rate of daily transactions used in the calculation.

The launch by CARR of two new working groups was also announced. The Transition Subgroup will focus on the transition toward the widespread use of CORRA as a reference rate in Canadian dollar financial products, while the Term Rate Subgroup will focus on the need for and the construction of a term risk-free rate benchmark.

CARR was launched in March 2018 by the Canadian Fixed-Income Forum to review and enhance CORRA and to consider the creation of a term risk-free Canadian dollar interest rate benchmark that is reliable and resilient to any market stress.

The creation of the benchmark, which would exist alongside the Canadian Dollar Offered Rate (CDOR), Canada’s version of LIBOR, echoes efforts in other countries to develop new risk-free or nearly risk-free reference rates.

Stephen Moore, Trump’s pick for Fed, says he is not withdrawing

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Stephen Moore, U.S. President Donald’s Trump pick to fill a vacant seat at the Federal Reserve, says he will continue to pursue his nomination even as a trail of his dismissive comments about women and the Midwest have sparked renewed criticism by Democratic lawmakers.

“I’m going to stick it out,” Moore told the John Howell radio show earlier this week. “The math is, I can’t lose more than three Republican senators, or I won’t have the votes. But you know, I’ve talked to many of the senators, they fully support me.”

As a Fed governor, Moore would help set interest rates for the world’s biggest economy.

Republicans have a 53 to 47 majority in the Senate, giving them the final say on whether Moore’s promised nomination is confirmed. Democratic Senators have criticized Moore for his policy positions, including his longtime support of tax cuts to stimulate the economy, as well as his comments about women.

In the interview, Moore said he had apologized for writing a column 18 years ago in which he jokingly called women’s participation in basketball “a travesty,” adding he would never write such a “politically incorrect column” today.

“The Left has come after me very aggressively” he said, adding he wished the focus was on his economic views rather than over what he said were his attempts at humor. “We are living in a world, John, where you can’t tell a joke anymore.”

In 2014, Moore called cities in the Midwest, including Cincinnati, the “armpits of America.”

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.

Hundreds of Cuban migrants are reported to be on the run Friday in Mexico after a crowd of more than 1,000 burst out of a troubled immigration detention center on its southern border.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said the mass escape Thursday in Tapachula – which the Associated Press called the largest in recent memory — involved around 1,300 Cuban migrants, although 700 of them have since returned voluntarily.

The migrants reportedly streamed out of the compound without any resistance, as the institute said its agents weren’t armed and “there was no confrontation.”

Federal police with riot shields later rushed in to control the situation, as a crowd of angry Cubans whose relatives were being held at the facility gathered outside. The Cubans claimed their relatives reported overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at the facility.

BORDER PATROL UNION CHIEF BLASTS CONGRESS OVER MIGRANT CARAVANS: ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT’?

“My wife and child have been in there for 27 days in bad conditions,” said Usmoni Velazquez Vallejo, as he waited outside for news. “There is overcrowding, insufficient food and there isn’t even medicine for them.”

Another Cuban detainee told the AFP: “We have many there… we are very tight, we sleep on the floor.”

It’s the third time since October that migrants at the facility staged an uprising, according to the news agency.

The center’s holding capacity is officially listed at less than 1,000 people, but the escape of 1,300 meant it was probably at least at double its capacity, since not everyone being held there escaped. Residents in the area said that sometimes the facility has held as many as 3,000 people, and a Mexican newspaper cited by Reuters said Haitians and Central Americans also are among the large group who still have not been tracked down.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

The Washington Post’s media critic went into meltdown after White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders held a mock press briefing for the children of White House journalists and employees on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

Erik Wemple, the newspaper’s chief media critic, slammed Sanders and the White House for organizing a fun day on Thursday for junior would-be journalists, while not holding an actual press conference for the record number of days.

WHITE HOUSE STAFF TO SKIP CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER AFTER LAST YEAR’S CONTROVERSY

Wemple wrote that Sanders gave to children an important lesson of “the centrality of nonaccountability mechanisms in the affairs of state” after she announced that the mock press briefing was “off the record.”

“When the children head home tonight, perhaps they can pull up archival footage to see how their questions stack up against ye olde press briefings,” he added.

“Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

— Erik Wemple

“Tuesday, after all, marked a record for number of days without a White House press briefing. Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

While some correspondents praised the White House for doing “a lot of work to welcome the children and provide “them an excellent experience,” other journalists echoed Wemple’s criticism and pointed out that Sanders hasn’t held a press briefing in over 40 days.

“Kids of WH Press Corps members are getting ready for a briefing with  @PressSec. Their parents have not had one in 45 days,” tweeted CBS News’ White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang.

REPORTER SHOUTS AT SARAH SANDERS AFTER BRIEFING: ‘DO YOUR JOB, SARAH!’

“The irony of it is that they’re pretending that the White House press briefing is a thing, and they’re pretending that this is how the White House operates, but this is not at all how the White House operates … It’s a relic of an earlier time,” another correspondent quoted by the Post said.

The Post struck a different tune in a column earlier this year, which declared that despite the administration’s criticism of the media, President Trump was “extremely accessible.”

Wemple quoted Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project, who said that Trump held 338 “short question-and-answer” sessions over his time in office, significantly more than 75 such sessions by former President Barack Obama during his first full two years in office.
