Trump’s ex-lawyer Cohen says testimony ‘could have been clearer’: lawyer

March 13, 2019

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and one-time “fixer” Michael Cohen’s testimony to Congress regarding any potential pardon for his crimes could have been clearer, but he never personally asked the president for such a reprieve, Cohen’s lawyer said.

In a statement to lawmakers on Tuesday, Cohen’s legal team sought to clarify his recent testimony amid questions over whether Cohen sought, or Trump offered, a pardon to the man, who one declared he would take a bullet for the Republican president but has since flipped to cooperate with federal prosecutors.

Cohen, who reports to prison in May for campaign finance crimes and previously lying to Congress, said at a public hearing before a House panel last month, “I have never asked for, nor would I accept, a pardon from President Trump.”

Trump himself challenged that claim. In a tweet on Friday, Trump said that Cohen “directly asked me for a pardon. I said NO. He lied again!” Cohen, in his own tweet, responded, calling the president’s assertion “another set of lies.”

In Tuesday’s letter, an attorney for Cohen said his testimony about not seeking a pardon referred to the period after Cohen decided to break from Trump in June 2018 and left their joint defense agreement.

“Cohen rejected the opportunity to ask for and receive a pardon even though he knew he was going to prison with hardships to his family,” Cohen lawyer Michael Monico said in the letter, to the U.S. House Oversight and Reform Committee.

Cohen has met with congressional committees four times since being sentenced, including the televised Feb. 27 hearing led by House Oversight Chairman Elijah Cummings.

Representatives for Cummings, a Democrat, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter.

Ex-officer charged with fatally shooting woman in his car

A former vice squad officer in Ohio has been charged with fatally shooting a woman who was sitting in his unmarked police vehicle in what the man says was an act of self-defense.

Columbus police say officer Andrew Mitchell shot and killed 23-year-old Donna Castleberry in 2018 after she stabbed him in the hand during an undercover prostitution investigation.

A grand jury on Thursday charged Mitchell with murder and involuntary manslaughter.

Mitchell's attorney has defended his actions, saying it was a proper use of force.

Mitchell is also facing federal charges of forcing women to have sex with him under threat of an arrest, pressuring others to cover up crimes and lying to the FBI by saying he'd never had sex with prostitutes. He has pleaded not guilty.

Jeb Bush: Trump needs Republican challenger in 2020

Jeb Bush believes a Republican should challenge President Trump for the nomination in 2020 — slamming the president's "dangerous" policies on trade and other issues.

In the latest salvo between the two former rivals, Bush, who ran unsuccessfully for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016, made the comments Saturday during an interview with ex-Obama adviser David Axelrod.

“I think someone should run just because Republicans ought to be given a choice,” Bush said on CNN's "The Axe Files."  “It’s hard to beat a sitting president, but to have a conversation about what it is to be a conservative, I think it’s important.”

BETO BOASTS OF HAVING REPUBLICAN MOM, DESPITE HER FREQUENT VOTES FOR DEMOCRATS

Bush, whose father George. H.W. Bush was the 41st president of the United States and his brother, George W. Bush, was the 43rd, reportedly added that Republican voters should be given more of a choice between different ideologies.

"And our country needs to have competing ideologies that people -- that are dynamic, that focus on the world we're in and the world we're moving toward rather than revert back to a nostalgic time," he said on CNN, seeming to take aim at Trump's "Make America Great Again" 2016 slogan.

Bush elaborated about his disagreements with Trump during the interview.

"We haven't had a major crisis to deal with, but this unilateralism or going-alone-ism I think is really dangerous," Bush said of Trump's foreign policy moves, according to The Hill.

"Our friends no longer believe they can trust the United States and our enemies, in many cases, feel emboldened by this approach," he reportedly added. "I think it defies the...bipartisan kind of consensus on foreign policy that has, by and large, kept America safe."

ANOTHER BIDEN GAFFE? FORMER VP CLAIMS HE'S 'MOST PROGRESSIVE DEM' RUNNING

According to The Hill, Bush also critiqued Trump's ability to handle the more symbolic aspects of running the country, such as responding during moments of crisis.

However, he did praise Trump's tax policy, regulatory changes and judicial nominations.

“You can honestly say he’s done good things in terms of policy and applaud them,” Bush said. “I think the symbolic, you know the kingly duties of the presidency, that’s where he falls short, and it’s important.”

The interview is the latest in a series of back-and-forth jabs between the two men.

Bush blasted Trump in September 2018 as a bad role model for young children, telling the Detroit Free Press: “He is not my role model as it relates to values I would share with my children and grandchildren.”

During a June 2018 interview with CNBC, Bush criticized Trump for going negative, saying that candidates must be civil with one another.

"The kind of campaign [Trump] ran would have never been successful a decade ago or in the age of [Ronald] Reagan and Bush, for example," said Bush.

BEHIND THE BUDGET 'GIMMICK' THAT COULD HELP SECURE TRUMP'S BORDER WALL

The ends don't justify the means, Bush said, referring to the way Trump goes negative. "It's not worth disparaging people."

Bush told Axelrod that Republicans need to "offer a compelling alternative" to Democratic ideas rather than just calling their ideas "bad."

So far, the only person to hint at challenging Trump for the 2020 GOP nomination is former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, who formed an exploratory committee in February.

Ex-Mass. Gov. Weld Announces Primary Challenge to Trump

Former GOP Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld announced Monday he is entering the race for president because he fears "for the republic" — becoming the first Republican to challenge President Donald Trump in the 2020.

In remarks on CNN's "The Lead," Weld dropped the surprise news.

"I'm announcing that I'm running for president of the United States as a Republican against President Trump in 2020," Weld said.

"I really think if we have six more years of the same stuff we've had out of the White House the last two years, that would be a political tragedy, and I would fear for the republic," he said. "So, I would be ashamed of myself if I didn’t raise my hand and run."

Despite Trump's nearly 90% support within the Republican Party, Weld said he is not daunted by the odds.

"I've done it before, particularly in New Hampshire, where I'm spending a lot of time," he said. "It's one vote at a time and one voter at a time. And you've got to meet them. But what we have now is a president who mocks the rule of law. I spent seven years in the Justice Department trying to keep the politics out of law enforcement. He's trying to put it in."

"A president who says, we don't need a free press, who says, climate change is a complete hoax: He's not paying attention," Weld continued. "I doubt very much he's made a study of any of those issues, but he seems to have difficulty, in my opinion, and I was a prosecutor for quite a while, he has a difficulty conforming his conduct to the requirements of law. That's a serious matter in the Oval Office."

In a statement to CNN, Weld echoed that theme.

"Ours is a nation built on courage, resilience, and independence," Weld, who had previously formed an exploratory committee, said in the statement. "In these times of great political strife, when both major parties are entrenched in their 'win at all cost' battles, the voices of the American people are being ignored and our nation is suffering.

"It is time for patriotic men and women across our great nation to stand and plant a flag.

"It is time to return to the principles of Lincoln – equality, dignity, and opportunity for all. There is no greater cause on earth than to preserve what truly makes America great. I am ready to lead that fight."

Trump Was Right: He Correctly Predicted SJWs Would Target Founding Fathers

Trump was criticized in 2017 for suggesting that social justice warriors would target George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, but now they’re doing just that, proving the president right.

Students at Hofstra University are now demanding the removal of a Thomas Jefferson statue to “correct for history,” and are also demanding politically-correct training for its professors and facility.

“Hofstra University students held their second annual ‘Jefferson Has Gotta Go!’ protest of a Thomas Jefferson statue on campus on Friday, demanding that the university move the structure into a museum along with the “appropriate context,'” reported Breitbart. “The Jefferson statue, which has also been subjected to acts of vandalism in the past, stands in front of the university’s student center — a location that some students have expressed frustration over, stating ‘it is unfortunate’ that so many students and families ‘take photos and share hugs and smiles’ in the presence of the Jefferson statue.”

Furthermore, students at George Washington University want to remove the school’s mascot, George the Colonial.

Contrast this to 2017, when President Trump was criticized for suggesting that both Jefferson and Washington would be targeted for removal.

“This week it’s Robert E. Lee. I noticed that Stonewall Jackson is coming down,” Trump said about the removal of two Confederate statues at the time. “I wonder, is it George Washington next week and is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?”

The president was criticized over those comments by two historians, one of whom said making an equivalency between the Founding Fathers and Confederate leaders was not only “absurd” but also “unacceptable for the president of the United States.”

“They accomplished something very important. Washington and Jefferson were central to the creation of a nation … Lee and Stonewall were not being honored for those types of accomplishment,” he said. “They were being honored for creating and defending the Confederacy, which existed for one reason, and that was to protect the right of people to own other people.”

Another historian also echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that a distinction must be drawn between Confederates and the Founding Fathers and stated that it’s hard to find 18th- and 19th- American leaders of great consequence who never owned slaves.

“It would be impossible to remember them if an association with slavery is the only criteria,” he said.

It would appear, however, that many college students are not drawing a line between the Founding Fathers and Confederate leaders; the campaign to remove Founding Fathers tributes seems to stem from an emotional – not a rational – argument.

The historians were asked to provide comment on these new developments but weren’t heard back from by the time of this publication.

Missing Florida woman’s blood found on sock, boots belonging to her accused killer: documents

DNA analysis found a missing Florida woman’s blood on a sock and boots belonging to her accused killer, according to reports citing newly released documents.

Kimberly Kessler, 49, faces an upcoming murder trial in the high-profile case of 34-year-old Joleen Cummings who disappeared nearly a year ago and whose body has not been recovered.

The sock and boots were retrieved from a storage unit rented by Kessler, WJXX-TV reported Friday, citing the release of hundreds of pages of law enforcement notes written as part of the murder probe. A judge ordered the release.

The notes say the boots look similar to boots Kessler was seen wearing in video from a gas station on the day Cummings disappeared.

“(Florida Department of Law Enforcement) analyzed the boots and found Cummings' DNA on the bloodstain on the boots,” police wrote in the documents, the station reported.

The investigators also wrote that “a sock was also seized from the storage unit. FDLE analyzed the sock and found Cummings' DNA on the blood stain.”

Kessler’s DNA was also found on the sock, police said in the notes.

Colorado avalanche kills 2 backcountry skiers in area known as 'Death Pass'

Two backcountry skiers were killed over the weekend in an avalanche in an area of Colorado known as "Death Pass," officials said.

Crested Butte Search and Rescue said in a Facebook post the two backcountry skiers were reported missing on Saturday night near the town of Crested Butte, and tracks were discovered leading into a fresh avalanche field near the area known as "Death Pass."

"No tracks exiting the slide were found and faint beacon signals were located in the slide area," the group said.

AVALANCHE KILLS ONE PERSON IN COLORADO OUTSIDE ASPEN, OFFICIALS SAY

A search and rescue group determined shortly after midnight that conditions were too dangerous, and the search was called off for the night, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. On Sunday, a team of six Crested Butte Search and Rescue members found the men’s bodies.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of the people involved," the agency said.

The Mt. Crested Butte Police Department identified the men to the Aspen Times as 27-year-old Owen Green, of Aspen, and 37-year-old Michael Goerne.

Friends said the pair had been training for the Grand Traverse, a 40-mile backcountry ski race across the Elk Mountains. The two men were partners in the race from Crested Butte to Aspen next month.

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – The grounding of India’s Jet Airways is turning into a quick windfall and long-term opportunity for international airlines keen to scoop up nearly a million outbound passengers from what was once the nation’s biggest airline.

Jet, which previously had a fleet of around 120 largely Boeing Co planes, was forced to indefinitely halt all flight operations on April 17 after its banks rejected the carrier’s plea for emergency funds.

The carrier’s descent into crisis has benefited international airlines in the form of rising fares and demand, data showed.

Fares from India to cities such as Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Bali in the first quarter of 2019 rose between 4 percent and 32 percent from a year ago, according to Indian travel portal MakeMyTrip Ltd.

In the peak travel months of May and June, fares to London have spiked as much as 36 percent and tickets to San Francisco are up nearly 20 percent from a year ago, according to data from travel portal Yatra.com.

“For the next three months it’s actually bonanza time for international players,” said Ashish Nainan, a research analyst at CARE Ratings. “At least until the middle of June, the fares are not going to come down.”

Due to rising demand, even before Jet’s lessors grounded planes, carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines Ltd and United Airlines saw an up to a 27 percent increase in passenger numbers from India in the last quarter of 2018, data from India’s aviation regulator showed. That is the latest period for which the data is available.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, clocking 15-20 percent domestic growth in recent years. It has long had only two full-service long-haul carriers, state-run Air India and Jet.

Jet is now hoping to be bailed out by a new investor, with final bids due on May 10.

INCREASING CAPACITY

Before its grounding, Jet had the biggest share of India’s outbound international air traffic, carrying 12 percent of the 7.8 million passengers headed overseas in the Oct-Dec quarter, down from 14 percent a year earlier, data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.

For an interactive graphic on Jet’s market share, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2WvDQYi

For an interactive graphic on average daily flights by the airline, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2FeFDel

The total number of passengers traveling overseas with Jet fell 10 percent during the last quarter of 2018 even as the outbound travel market grew about 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines posted a 27 percent increase in passengers from India, Cathay registered 17 percent growth and British Airways saw a 10 percent rise in the same period.

Cathay said the events at Jet combined with increasing demand for travel had led it to deploy larger aircraft with more seats on some Indian routes.

“In the long term we would certainly like to be able to offer more capacity into India, not just on our existing routes but by establishing new services to secondary cities,” Cathay said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines, in an email to Reuters, said the Indian market is “very promising” but declined to give details of airfare levels or demand patterns in the wake of Jet’s exit, citing a quiet period before the release of its annual results.

DOMESTIC GAINS

Jet’s grounding has also had a big impact on the domestic market, with inter-city air fares to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata soaring more than 20 percent in May and June, according to Yatra.com.

The spike in fares is expected to underpin strong earnings for IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd, which are set to report results for the quarter ended March 31 in the coming weeks.

“Domestic Indian carriers are the main benefactors, but I suspect if Jet fails to be revived by May 10 then Vistara and other airlines that ply international routes, particularly the lucrative Gulf market, are the main winners,” said Shukor Yusof, the head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics. Vistara is a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

Inadequate bilateral traffic rights between India and other countries, however, could be an impediment to foreign carriers’ hopes of winning business lost by Jet, some analysts said.

“Even before Jet’s operational shutdown, international capacity was significantly constrained,” said Kapil Kaul, CEO for South Asia of consultancy CAPA. “We have now more serious capacity challenge … this is unlikely to be stabilized in the near term.”

A new national government likely to be in place sometime after elections end in May is expected to address the international capacity constraints, and once bilateral agreements are eased airlines including Emirates, Turkish and Qatar would immediately benefit, said Kaul.

“We would love to add more flights but we are at the limit of the allocation granted to us for traffic rights,” Emirates Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori told reporters in Dubai on Wednesday.

(Reuters) – AstraZeneca Plc beat first-quarter sales and earnings expectations on Friday as the British drugmaker benefited from a push into cancer drugs and emerging markets including China.

Newer treatments such as lung cancer drug Tagrisso, now the company’s top selling medicine, have helped the drugmaker’s return to growth after years of crumbling sales due to patent losses on older drugs.

Sales in China have shown explosive growth, more than doubling since 2012, but AstraZeneca executives on Friday said that may not be sustained.

“The enormous growth you currently see in China, 28 percent, probably is not sustainable, but we feel very bullish that the growth will continue to be at a pace of between 15 percent and 20 percent,” Ruud Dobber, executive vice president, BioPharma, told Reuters.

Shares of the company were down 0.2 percent at 5,878 pence at 1031 GMT.

The turnaround in AstraZeneca’s fortunes has been powered by a push into cancer treatments led by Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, who saw off a 2014 takeover bid from Pfizer in part by promising annual sales of $45 billion by 2023.

In the first quarter, sales from its oncology unit rose 59 percent to $1.89 billion, accounting for 35 percent of total product sales.

The company has moved deeper into cancer therapy market through wide-ranging deals, including those for immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Last month, it agreed a multi-billion dollar oncology deal with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd.

“We’re reaching that point where after years of having to keep faith, we have actually got something tangible to believe in,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett said.

AstraZeneca also backed its annual sales and earnings forecast and said it has extensively prepared for UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union, even in the event of a no-deal exit.

The company has already spent more than 40 million pounds ($52 million) on Brexit preparations, including stockpiling six weeks’ worth of drugs in the UK and four weeks in continental Europe to guard against shortages.

AstraZeneca said product sales rose 14 percent at constant currency to $5.47 billion in the quarter, led by its lung cancer drug Tagrisso and respiratory treatment Pulmicort.

China sales increased by 28 percent to $1.24 billion in the quarter, accounting for nearly a quarter of overall product sales.

Core earnings came in at 89 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts on average were expecting core earnings of 85 cents per share and product sales of $5.29 billion, according to a company provided consensus of 19 analysts.

Britain and Ireland are making a new push to restore Northern Ireland’s collapsed government, amid mounting criticism of politicians following the murder of a journalist by a banned militant group.

The two governments are expected to make an announcement Friday about talks to revive the power-sharing administration, which has been suspended for more than two years because of a dispute between the main Protestant and Catholic parties.

Security officials warn that political drift in Northern Ireland could embolden those bent on violence.

Pressure on politicians has grown since the killing of journalist Lyra McKee, shot dead by an Irish nationalist militant during rioting in Londonderry last week.

Police have released video footage of a stocky, masked man they say is a key suspect and have urged residents to help identify him.
