UK Labour leader could win back Scotland with second Brexit vote, says ex-PM Blair

EDINBURGH (Reuters) – British opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn could seize on a “huge opportunity” to win back key seats in its former Scottish heartland by endorsing a second vote on Brexit, former Labour prime minister Tony Blair said.

He said Labour could recover ground from the Scottish arm of Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservatives, led by Ruth Davidson, by offering a second vote and a way out for Scots, most of whom oppose Britain’s planned exit from the European Union. Nationally, Britons voted by a 52-48 percent margin in 2016 in favor of Brexit.

“The vulnerability of Ruth Davidson’s Conservatives is that they are tied to Theresa May. That is a vulnerability, but it’s only a vulnerability you can exploit if you’re prepared to say, ‘We’d stop the thing’,” Blair, premier for a decade to 2007, told Holyrood Magazine in an interview published on Friday.

“So, you’ve literally got those votes just lying on the table waiting to be taken, you just need to say it,” said Blair, a centre-left Europhile who backs a second referendum on Brexit.

With just five weeks until Britain is due to leave the EU on March 29, May is yet to get the changes to her exit deal with Brussels she needs to secure its ratification in parliament. She has ruled out a second referendum, saying that would negate “the will of the British people” expressed in 2016.

Ahead of a promised parliamentary debate and vote on the next steps on Brexit on Feb. 27, Corbyn is under intense pressure from moderates within his party to back a second referendum explicitly, now that the terms of Brexit are known.

Corbyn, a longtime eurosceptic, has said Labour is focusing on securing an early national election before any possible resort to a second referendum.

Nine of his lawmakers have resigned this week, with most supporting a second referendum. British media have reported dozens more could follow if Corbyn does not back a plan to put May’s Brexit withdrawal deal to a public vote.

Some of those defectors have teamed up with some pro-EU Conservative lawmakers who are also pushing for a second referendum, a further sign of the fragmentation of British politics wrought by the decision to leave the EU.

Labour has seven of Scotland’s 59 seats in Britain’s 650-seat parliament, having fallen to a low of just one seat in the 2015 election. But its position is still weak for a party that for decades dominated Scottish politics and had 41 seats in 2005.

To be voted back into power in Britain, Labour would probably have to recover a significant number of seats in Scotland, which is traditionally more left-leaning but is now dominated by the Scottish National Party.

The next national election is not due until 2022.

TOKYO (Reuters) – The lead lawyer for Carlos Ghosn said he expected a fresh indictment for the former Nissan Motor Co boss to come later on Monday.

“We haven’t heard of an indictment yet. I expect it will be this afternoon,” Junichiro Hironaka told reporters outside his office.

Ghosn is expected to be indicted by Tokyo prosecutors Monday for aggravated breach of trust. It would be the fourth charge against him since he was arrested in November on suspicion of financial misconduct. He has denied all allegations against him.

ALGIERS (Reuters) – Algerian authorities on Saturday ordered an early start to the spring university holiday, an apparent attempt to weaken two weeks of student-led protests against President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

The Higher Education Ministry’s decision came a day after tens of thousands of demonstrators packed central Algiers to challenge the veteran leader’s 20-year-old rule in the biggest protests in the capital in 28 years.

Without giving a reason for the move, the Ministry said in a decree that the spring break would be brought forward by 10 days, starting on Sunday instead of March 20.

Algerians desperate for jobs and angry at unemployment, corruption and an elderly elite seen as out of touch with the young have taken to the streets since Feb. 22 to protest the 82-year-old’s plans to seek a fifth term in an April 18 election.

Many of the demonstrations — the largest since 1991 when the army canceled elections Islamists were poised to win — started at university premises before spilling out onto the streets.

The ailing Bouteflika is in hospital in Geneva and has rarely been seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2013.

On Thursday he issued his first warning to protesters, saying the unrest, now entering its third week, could create chaos in the oil- and natural gas-producing North African country.

Bouteflika has offered to limit his term after the election and has vowed to change the “system” that runs the country, but the protest movement has galvanized discontent among different sectors, particularly students and young families.

Some long-time allies of Bouteflika, including members of the ruling party, have expressed support for the protesters, revealing cracks within a ruling elite long seen as invincible.

Friday’s protests were largely peaceful but some clashes between youths and police broke out in the evening and state media said 110 protesters and 112 policemen had been hurt in the unrest.

By Harry Brumpton, Echo Wang and Liana B. Baker

(Reuters) – Goldman Sachs Group Inc invested money from China’s sovereign wealth fund in a California-based industrial company and is looking for more U.S. deals, three sources familiar with the matter said, even after increased scrutiny from Washington all but stopped U.S.-China deals last year.

The Wall Street bank is managing a private equity fund called China-U.S. Industrial Cooperation Partnership LP, which it launched with state-owned China Investment Corp (CIC) in November 2017 on the sidelines of U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing.

The fund invested alongside Goldman to buy Boyd Corp, a Pleasanton, California-based manufacturer of rubber seals and gaskets, for $3 billion last September, the sources said.

Chinese efforts to invest in U.S. companies have been tripped up over the past year by Washington’s concerns the Chinese were gaining control of sensitive technology or companies that played key roles in the economy.

Reuters reported on Wednesday that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), a U.S. government panel that scrutinizes deals for national security risks, asked the Chinese owner of the dating app Grindr to divest it, spurred on by data privacy concerns.

Goldman successfully argued to CFIUS, however, that its plan to buy Boyd should be allowed to proceed, the sources said.

CIC’s novel partnership with Goldman illustrates how China is adapting to U.S. curbs on its deal-making, which resulted in Chinese acquisitions of U.S. companies plunging by 88 percent year-on-year in 2018, according to financial data provider Refinitiv, as trade relations between the world’s two largest economies deteriorated.

(Graphic: Chinese acquisitions in the United States – https://tmsnrt.rs/2HzUTVE)

The Cooperation fund was set up expressly to help U.S. companies penetrate the Chinese market. And the fund is touting CIC’s involvement as a strategic advantage in accomplishing this goal.

In a confidential marketing document prepared for Goldman clients and seen by Reuters, the New York-based bank highlighted CIC’s “efficient sourcing of commercial partners and customers,” promising to “bring new pathways for growth via China.”

“The Cooperation fund is a U.S. fund run by a U.S. manager, and is managed to be in compliance with all laws and regulations, including CFIUS,” a Goldman spokeswoman said.

A spokesman for the U.S. Department of the Treasury, which chairs CFIUS, said the panel does not comment publicly on individual cases.

CIC did not respond to requests for comment. The sovereign fund said last summer that it planned to press ahead with the Cooperation fund despite U.S.-China trade tensions, but details of its first deal have not been previously reported. The sources asked not to be identified because the Cooperation fund’s details are confidential.

RIVAL CHINESE BIDDER BALKED

Even though Goldman received CFIUS clearance for the Boyd deal, it did not disclose publicly the Cooperation fund’s involvement in the acquisition and most of Boyd’s 4,200 employees were not told about the Chinese money, the sources said.

A Moody’s Investors Service Inc credit rating note listed Boyd’s acquirer as Goldman’s flagship private equity fund West Street Capital Partners VII. After the deal, that fund transferred a minority stake in Boyd to the Cooperation fund, the sources said.

A Goldman spokeswoman declined to comment on why Goldman’s Boyd-related announcements did not mention the Cooperation fund.

One Chinese company that sought to acquire Boyd outright had balked at the regulatory hurdles.

Kangde Xin Composite Material Group Co Ltd, a Chinese laminates manufacturer, said in regulatory announcements that it abandoned a bid for Boyd because it thought the “China-U.S trade friction” would make regulatory approval of the deal difficult.

Kangde Xin did not respond to a request for comment. Investment bankers said the company’s failure to buy Boyd showed CIC would not have been able to do the deal without the structure offered by the Goldman fund.

“This is a really innovative structure, one which could go a long way to enable them to undertake transactions that would be hard for them to do otherwise,” said Euan Rellie, co-founder of BDA Partners, an investment bank that specializes in cross-border deals, referring to the Goldman fund and CIC.

ANCHOR INVESTOR

CIC, whose assets under management are approaching $1 trillion, also has investments in other private equity funds. But CIC does not typically help companies acquired by private equity funds it invests in grow in China.

CIC also calls itself an “anchor investor” in the Cooperation fund, and the sources said it holds a sizeable minority stake that is larger than its typical private equity fund investments.

“CIC is not involved in the investment management of the fund nor the operation of the fund’s portfolio companies. CIC’s role is to help Goldman Sachs, as the investment manager, identify and pursue opportunities for portfolio companies to do more business in China,” the Goldman spokeswoman said.

The Cooperation fund, which targets $5 billion in investment capital, plans to execute between one and three deals a year on average, adding up to as many as 12 over the duration of the fund, two of the sources said.

The fund is the most advanced in a series of similar investments by CIC. In an interview with Chinese state-owned newspaper Securities Times earlier this month, CIC’s president, Tu Guangshao, said bilateral cooperation funds were a strategy to “achieve a more favorable foreign investment regulatory environment” and “remove some barriers in cross-border investment.”

Tu said CIC has inked a letter of intent for a Britain-China fund, signed a contract for a Japan-China Industrial Cooperation Fund and is “in preparation for” China cooperation funds with Italy and France.

“When you get a couple more cases like this that look successful, other sovereign wealth funds and foreign investors will adopt this model,” said James Lewis, senior vice president at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based think tank.

April 6, 2019

Carlos Santana belted a walk-off solo homer with one out in the ninth inning as the Cleveland Indians beat the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 Friday.

After Jake Bauers flied out to begin the ninth inning, Santana deposited a 1-0 fastball from Joe Biagini (0-1) into the bleachers in left-center field. The blast was Santana’s fifth career walk-off homer and Cleveland’s first walk-off win of the season.

Kevin Plawecki launched a homer to lead off the third inning and Max Moroff had an RBI double in the fifth for the Indians. Freddy Galvis belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning for the Blue Jays, who mustered just three hits for the second straight night and have lost five of their past six games overall.

Adam Cimber (1-0) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.

Phillies 10, Twins 4

Rhys Hoskins had three hits and drove in four runs, and Odubel Herrera also had three hits as host Philadelphia overcame a five-hit cycle by Minnesota’s Jorge Polanco.

Polanco tripled in the first, singled in the third, lined a homer in the fifth and then doubled to left in the seventh for the 11th cycle in Twins’ history and the first since Michael Cuddyer did it on May 22, 2009. Polanco also singled in the ninth to finish 5-for-5 for the second five-hit cycle in franchise history, joining Joe Cronin, who did it on Sept. 2, 1929, with the Washington Senators.

Maikel Franco doubled and drove in two runs, and Jean Segura had two hits, scored twice and also drove in a run for the Phillies, who also took advantage of nine walks and two hit batters by Minnesota pitchers.

Angels 3, Rangers 1

Mike Trout’s leadoff home run in the sixth inning snapped a tie, and two innings later he added another homer, lifting Los Angeles past Texas in Anaheim, Calif.

Trout’s home runs, his third in the past two nights, marked the 15th multi-homer game of his career. The first came on a 2-0 fastball from Rangers starter Lance Lynn, who otherwise pitched a solid game. Lynn (0-1) gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked one.

Trout gave Angels closer Cody Allen a little extra cushion with his homer off Jesse Chavez in the eighth. Allen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save. Angels reliever Justin Anderson (1-0) earned the victory with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

Brewers 13, Cubs 10

Ryan Braun finished with four RBIs and was one of five Milwaukee batters to homer, and the Brewers held on for a win over visiting Chicago.

Hernan Perez, Yasmani Grandal, Orlando Arcia and Eric Thames also belted homers for the Brewers, who scored the first eight runs. Milwaukee increased its winning streak to six games.

Daniel Descalso, Willson Contreras and Jason Heyward homered for Chicago, which has dropped six in a row since winning its season opener. The Cubs have given up 55 runs during their skid — an average of 9.2 runs per game.

Braves 4, Marlins 0

Ronald Acuna Jr. hit his second homer of the season to start a four-run fourth-inning rally, and Atlanta defeated visiting Miami for its fourth consecutive win.

Acuna, the 2018 National League Rookie of the Year, now has eight home runs in 20 career games against the Marlins. The left fielder is hitting .337 (26-for-77) with 20 RBIs against Miami.

The winning pitcher was Kevin Gausman (1-0), who made his season debut after dealing with some shoulder inflammation in spring training. He worked efficiently, throwing only 88 pitches in seven shutout innings and retiring 13 straight Marlins at one point.

Diamondbacks 15, Red Sox 8

Ketel Marte hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and Adam Jones, Ildemaro Vargas and Alex Avila also belted homers in Arizona’s win over Boston at Phoenix.

Arizona thrilled its fans with five home runs in its home opener after going 3-4 in its first seven games at the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego. The Red Sox are 2-7 in their 11-game West Coast road trip to start the season.

Marte’s home run in the fourth inning off Boston starter Rick Porcello (0-2) started a four-run rally, and his first career grand slam, off Brian Johnson, was part of a seven-run outburst in the sixth for the Diamondbacks.

Dodgers 10, Rockies 6

Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy each homered and drove in three runs, Russell Martin also homered, and hot-hitting Los Angeles beat Colorado in Denver.

Corey Seager had two of the Dodgers’ 13 hits to spoil Colorado’s home opener. The three home runs give Los Angeles 21 through eight games this season. Kenta Maeda (2-0) held Colorado to one run on four hits over five innings.

Trevor Story homered twice, David Dahl also went deep and Charlie Blackmon had three hits for the Rockies, who have lost five of six since winning their first two games of the season.

Padres 5, Cardinals 3

Fernando Tatis Jr. capped a three-run seventh inning with a two-run homer, leading San Diego to a victory at St. Louis in the Cardinals’ home opener.

The homer by the 20-year-old rookie — whose father, Fernando Tatis, played three seasons for the Cardinals — followed a tiebreaking sacrifice fly by Franchy Cordero.

Paul Goldschmidt hit his fifth homer in seven games as a Cardinal in the eighth. San Diego’s Robert Stock (1-0) got credit for the win despite giving up one run in one inning. Kirby Yates picked up his fourth save after throwing a scoreless ninth.

White Sox 10, Mariners 8

Yoan Moncada had two hits and four RBIs, including a go-ahead two-run single in the seventh inning, to lead Chicago past Seattle in the White Sox’s home opener.

Chicago led 6-1 after two innings, but Seattle didn’t yield its four-game winning streak without a fight. The Mariners scored the next seven runs to take an 8-6 lead, grabbing the advantage with a four-run sixth that included two-run home runs from Mitch Haniger and Ryon Healy.

Chicago’s Welington Castillo drove in a run in the seventh when he was hit by a pitch before Moncada put the White Sox ahead 9-8 with a two-run single to center. Tim Anderson added a solo home run in the eighth to finish with three hits, three RBIs and four runs. Domingo Santana and Daniel Vogelbach also homered for Seattle.

Pirates 2, Reds 0

Jung Ho Kang’s seventh-inning RBI double broke up an intense pitchers’ duel as Pittsburgh beat visiting Cincinnati, the Reds’ sixth straight loss and third in a row by shutout.

Adam Frazier added an RBI double in the eighth for the Pirates in support of starting right-hander Joe Musgrove (1-0), who pitched seven three-hit innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.

The Pirates have won the first two games of the four-game series, both by 2-0 scores. The Reds have not scored since the eighth inning on Tuesday.

Rays 5, Giants 2

Tampa Bay scored four runs before many at San Francisco’s home opener had settled in, and Tyler Glasnow pitched six innings of three-hit, shutout ball in the Rays’ victory.

Yandy Diaz and Kevin Kiermaier hit first-inning home runs for the Rays, who took a 4-0 lead and never looked back en route to their sixth win in eight games this season.

Glasnow (2-0) walked one and struck out six.

Astros 3, A’s 2

Collin McHugh worked six strong innings, Carlos Correa clubbed his first home run, and Houston won its home opener, beating Oakland.

McHugh (1-1) limited the Athletics to one run on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts. He relied largely on a two-pitch mix, throwing 35 sliders and 33 four-seam fastballs among his 94 pitches.

After surrendering a game-tying RBI single to Ramon Laureano with two outs in the fourth inning, McHugh rebounded and retired the final seven batters he faced. Laureano recorded two of the hits against McHugh, including a leadoff double in the third, and he finished 4-for-4.

Australia won't risk lives returning IS refugees from Syria

Australia's prime minister says he won't put officials in danger by retrieving extremists from the Middle East after an Australian Islamic State group widow asked to bring her children home from a Syrian refugee camp.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters Australians who take their families to war zones to fight with the Islamic State group had to take responsibility for their actions.

His response came after the Australian Broadcasting Corp. interviewed the woman in one of the refugee camps in northern Syria where she has lived with her toddler son and malnourished 6-month-old daughter since they fled the Syrian village battleground of Baghouz.

ABC said the 24-year-old woman refused to confirm her identity and wore a veil during the interview, but it identified her Thursday as Zehra Duman.

Missouri police search stage 4 pancreatic cancer patient’s hospital room for marijuana, video shows

Police reportedly searched the hospital room of a cancer patient for marijuana after someone called to report the smell of weed coming from his room in Bolivar, Missouri.

Nolan Sousley, who has stage 4 pancreatic cancer, captured their search on a Facebook Live video last Wednesday that has since gone viral.

The Bolivar Police Department had gotten a call that the smell of marijuana was coming from Sousley’s room at Citizens Memorial Hospital last week, so they followed up on the call, despite Sousley allegedly telling them he had only taken THC oil capsules before going into the hospital.

TERMINALLY ILL WISCONSIN GIRL WHO LOVES DOGS VISITED BY K-9 OFFICERS, NEARLY 40 POLICE DEPARTMENTS

“I had some capsules that had some THC oil in them,” Sousley can be heard saying in the video. “I took them outside on the parking lot.”

Meanwhile, in the video, an officer can be seen going through one of Sousley’s bags while another stands at the back of the room.

“If we find marijuana, we’ll give you a citation. We’re not taking you down to the county jail,” the officer at the back of the room said.

Marijuana is illegal in Missouri after a November 2018 bill was passed to allow it to be used for medical purposes, though the regulations have not been formalized. Until that occurs, possessing marijuana is still illegal.

At one point in the video, a woman in a white lab coat walked into the room. The officers explained the situation to her, adding that Sousley had another bag he wouldn’t let them search.

“I’m not letting them dig through it. It has my final-day things in there, and nobody’s going to dig in it,” Sousley told her.

MISSOURI WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER CLAIMING SHE SHOT BOYFRIEND REENACTING MOVIE SCENE, COPS SAY

Eventually, Sousley stopped recording, but later told a local outlet that he did let the officers go through his bag. They didn’t find any marijuana, The Washington Post reported.

Sousley’s video has since been viewed more than 771,000 times and the Bolivar Police Department’s Facebook page has been shut down because it was “inundated by negative feedback,” Bolivar Police Chief Mark Webb said.

The hospital also later apologized for the incident.

“We pride ourselves in providing compassionate care to all patients and we fell short of expectations,” Tamera Heitz-Peek, a hospital spokeswoman told The Post.

“We apologize to our patient and his family and friends who were affected by our actions. We are reviewing the incident and will retrain our employees in the core values and the importance of respect and dignity to our patients and the community,” she added.

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – The grounding of India’s Jet Airways is turning into a quick windfall and long-term opportunity for international airlines keen to scoop up nearly a million outbound passengers from what was once the nation’s biggest airline.

Jet, which previously had a fleet of around 120 largely Boeing Co planes, was forced to indefinitely halt all flight operations on April 17 after its banks rejected the carrier’s plea for emergency funds.

The carrier’s descent into crisis has benefited international airlines in the form of rising fares and demand, data showed.

Fares from India to cities such as Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Bali in the first quarter of 2019 rose between 4 percent and 32 percent from a year ago, according to Indian travel portal MakeMyTrip Ltd.

In the peak travel months of May and June, fares to London have spiked as much as 36 percent and tickets to San Francisco are up nearly 20 percent from a year ago, according to data from travel portal Yatra.com.

“For the next three months it’s actually bonanza time for international players,” said Ashish Nainan, a research analyst at CARE Ratings. “At least until the middle of June, the fares are not going to come down.”

Due to rising demand, even before Jet’s lessors grounded planes, carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines Ltd and United Airlines saw an up to a 27 percent increase in passenger numbers from India in the last quarter of 2018, data from India’s aviation regulator showed. That is the latest period for which the data is available.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, clocking 15-20 percent domestic growth in recent years. It has long had only two full-service long-haul carriers, state-run Air India and Jet.

Jet is now hoping to be bailed out by a new investor, with final bids due on May 10.

INCREASING CAPACITY

Before its grounding, Jet had the biggest share of India’s outbound international air traffic, carrying 12 percent of the 7.8 million passengers headed overseas in the Oct-Dec quarter, down from 14 percent a year earlier, data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.

For an interactive graphic on Jet’s market share, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2WvDQYi

For an interactive graphic on average daily flights by the airline, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2FeFDel

The total number of passengers traveling overseas with Jet fell 10 percent during the last quarter of 2018 even as the outbound travel market grew about 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines posted a 27 percent increase in passengers from India, Cathay registered 17 percent growth and British Airways saw a 10 percent rise in the same period.

Cathay said the events at Jet combined with increasing demand for travel had led it to deploy larger aircraft with more seats on some Indian routes.

“In the long term we would certainly like to be able to offer more capacity into India, not just on our existing routes but by establishing new services to secondary cities,” Cathay said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines, in an email to Reuters, said the Indian market is “very promising” but declined to give details of airfare levels or demand patterns in the wake of Jet’s exit, citing a quiet period before the release of its annual results.

DOMESTIC GAINS

Jet’s grounding has also had a big impact on the domestic market, with inter-city air fares to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata soaring more than 20 percent in May and June, according to Yatra.com.

The spike in fares is expected to underpin strong earnings for IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd, which are set to report results for the quarter ended March 31 in the coming weeks.

“Domestic Indian carriers are the main benefactors, but I suspect if Jet fails to be revived by May 10 then Vistara and other airlines that ply international routes, particularly the lucrative Gulf market, are the main winners,” said Shukor Yusof, the head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics. Vistara is a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

Inadequate bilateral traffic rights between India and other countries, however, could be an impediment to foreign carriers’ hopes of winning business lost by Jet, some analysts said.

“Even before Jet’s operational shutdown, international capacity was significantly constrained,” said Kapil Kaul, CEO for South Asia of consultancy CAPA. “We have now more serious capacity challenge … this is unlikely to be stabilized in the near term.”

A new national government likely to be in place sometime after elections end in May is expected to address the international capacity constraints, and once bilateral agreements are eased airlines including Emirates, Turkish and Qatar would immediately benefit, said Kaul.

“We would love to add more flights but we are at the limit of the allocation granted to us for traffic rights,” Emirates Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori told reporters in Dubai on Wednesday.

(Reuters) – AstraZeneca Plc beat first-quarter sales and earnings expectations on Friday as the British drugmaker benefited from a push into cancer drugs and emerging markets including China.

Newer treatments such as lung cancer drug Tagrisso, now the company’s top selling medicine, have helped the drugmaker’s return to growth after years of crumbling sales due to patent losses on older drugs.

Sales in China have shown explosive growth, more than doubling since 2012, but AstraZeneca executives on Friday said that may not be sustained.

“The enormous growth you currently see in China, 28 percent, probably is not sustainable, but we feel very bullish that the growth will continue to be at a pace of between 15 percent and 20 percent,” Ruud Dobber, executive vice president, BioPharma, told Reuters.

Shares of the company were down 0.2 percent at 5,878 pence at 1031 GMT.

The turnaround in AstraZeneca’s fortunes has been powered by a push into cancer treatments led by Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, who saw off a 2014 takeover bid from Pfizer in part by promising annual sales of $45 billion by 2023.

In the first quarter, sales from its oncology unit rose 59 percent to $1.89 billion, accounting for 35 percent of total product sales.

The company has moved deeper into cancer therapy market through wide-ranging deals, including those for immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Last month, it agreed a multi-billion dollar oncology deal with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd.

“We’re reaching that point where after years of having to keep faith, we have actually got something tangible to believe in,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett said.

AstraZeneca also backed its annual sales and earnings forecast and said it has extensively prepared for UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union, even in the event of a no-deal exit.

The company has already spent more than 40 million pounds ($52 million) on Brexit preparations, including stockpiling six weeks’ worth of drugs in the UK and four weeks in continental Europe to guard against shortages.

AstraZeneca said product sales rose 14 percent at constant currency to $5.47 billion in the quarter, led by its lung cancer drug Tagrisso and respiratory treatment Pulmicort.

China sales increased by 28 percent to $1.24 billion in the quarter, accounting for nearly a quarter of overall product sales.

Core earnings came in at 89 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts on average were expecting core earnings of 85 cents per share and product sales of $5.29 billion, according to a company provided consensus of 19 analysts.

Britain and Ireland are making a new push to restore Northern Ireland’s collapsed government, amid mounting criticism of politicians following the murder of a journalist by a banned militant group.

The two governments are expected to make an announcement Friday about talks to revive the power-sharing administration, which has been suspended for more than two years because of a dispute between the main Protestant and Catholic parties.

Security officials warn that political drift in Northern Ireland could embolden those bent on violence.

Pressure on politicians has grown since the killing of journalist Lyra McKee, shot dead by an Irish nationalist militant during rioting in Londonderry last week.

Police have released video footage of a stocky, masked man they say is a key suspect and have urged residents to help identify him.
