Gunmen fire on uranium convoy in Brazil; no injuries

The company that operates a nuclear plant in Brazil says that gunmen fired on a convoy carrying uranium fuel, but says they weren't targeting the radioactive material.

Gunmen shot at police cars accompanying the convoy Tuesday near the city of Angra dos Reis, where the plant is located.

A statement by the Eletronuclear company says bandits were frightened by the appearance of police vehicles and shot at one. It says police returned fire, but there were no injuries.

The company said Wednesday the uranium made it safely to the plant.

Drug traffickers are known to operate in the area.

(Reuters) – Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu crushed two-times Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza 6-0 6-1 to advance to the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old tournament wildcard won 83 percent of her first serve points, more than double that of the 20th-seeded Spaniard, and converted five of her seven break-point opportunities in the 52-minute blow out.

Andreescu smashed a forehand winner on her first match point to seal the win and smiled before shaking the hand of the 2016 French Open and 2017 Wimbledon champion.

Andreescu has grown familiar with victory of late with Wednesday’s success her 26th win of the year, the most of any WTA player.

Next up for the world number 60 is a meeting with either sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina or 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova, who play their quarter-final match later on Wednesday.

Maine city sets record for most consecutive days with at least an inch of snow on the ground

Say it ain't snow for one city in Maine.

The city of Caribou in the northern part of the state set a new record on Monday for the longest stretch of having at least an inch of snow on the ground.

"Caribou is now at 157 straight days of an inch or more on the ground," the National Weather Service's Caribou Office said on Twitter.

NEW JERSEY UTILITY WORKER NARROWLY ESCAPES FALLEN POWER LINE ERUPTING INTO FIREBALL AFTER STORM

As of Tuesday, there were still 10 inches of snow on the ground in the city of just over 8,000 people.

The weather service said earlier this month that the previous record was 155 days of snow on the ground during the winter of 2002-2003.

"Keep in mind, we have a relatively short period of record with snow depth data, only since the winter of 1940-41," the NWS Caribou said.

In March, Caribou was ranked top among the 10 U.S. cities with the highest snowfall totals this winter by AccuWeather.

The NWS said in January that Caribou saw 59.8 inches of snow, which "smashed" the previous record of 44.5 inches in January 1994.

“Not only did it break the January record, it almost broke the all-time snowiest month on record of December 1972 when 59.9 inches of snow was observed,” the agency said at the time.

The remaining snow may finally be gone by the end of the week, however, as temperatures are forecast to reach 60 degrees by Saturday.

Lawyers Release Video of Media Ripping Nick Sandmann

Lawyers for 16-year-old high school student Nick Sandmann released a video titled "Nick Sandmann vs Media Giants" that paints a poor picture of certain members of the media as they blamed him for an incident that took place after January's March For Life.

The video, which is just over two minutes in length, calls out CNN, The Washington Post, and HBO host Bill Maher for falsely claiming Sandmann instigated a showdown between himself and a Native American activist at the Lincoln Memorial. Videos from that day showed a group of Black Hebrew Israelites was taunting Sandmann and his classmates.

Many of the schoolboys were wearing "Make America Great Again" hats, a point that many of Sandmann's critics pointed out in the days following the incident.

The new video claims the Post and CNN "recklessly spread lies about a minor to advance their own financial and political agendas. Despite raw video debunking the false narrative, the Post and CNN doubled down on their reckless lies . . . Lies that will forever haunt and endanger the life of an innocent young man."

The narrator added, "How long will we allow these media giants to tear the fabric of our lives to further their own agenda? Will they ever be held accountable?

"Yes, they will."

Sandmann's lawyers filed a $250 million lawsuit against the Post last month, which they followed with a $275 million lawsuit against CNN this week. Both lawsuits allege the media companies falsely vilified Sandmann.

Brown, Auburn blitz Kansas to reach Sweet 16

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Second Round-Auburn vs Kansas

March 24, 2019

Senior guard Bryce Brown made his first six shots, five from 3-point range, to ignite a first-half tear that enabled No. 5 Auburn to crush No. 4 Kansas 89-75 Saturday in the second round of the Midwest Region at Salt Lake City.

The win was the 10th straight for the Tigers (28-9), who advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2003. They’ll head to Kansas City to face the winner of Sunday’s second-round game between No. 1 North Carolina and No. 9 Washington.

Auburn surged to a commanding 51-25 halftime bulge, the worst deficit Kansas has ever faced at the break in 155 NCAA Tournament games.

Brown, who came in averaging a team-high 15.7 points, scored 17 in the first half and finished with 25 on 9-of-13 shooting, going 7 of 11 from 3-point range. Junior point guard Jared Harper chipped in 18 points, including 14 in the first half.

Sophomore forward Chuma Okeke added 12 points, while junior forward Anfernee McLemore added 11 for the deep Tigers.

Auburn wasted no time establishing control. It used runs 7-0 and then 8-0 to go up 15-5 before the first media timeout. Brown and Harper combined for three 3-pointers during that stretch, and the Tigers finished with nine first-half treys.

Kansas coach Bill Self had no answers for the early Auburn onslaught, using his third timeout with 8:57 still remaining in the first half. The Jayhawks (26-10) made their first seven attempts in the second half, but the Tigers countered by making their first five.

Auburn shot 52.5 percent and made 13 3-pointers, the seventh straight game the Tigers made at least 12 shots from behind the arc. They lead the nation in 3-point makes.

Kansas standout Dedric Lawson missed his first five attempts and did not connect from the field until the 2:26 mark of the first half. The slow start contributed to the Jayhawks’ first-half struggles, though the junior forward finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds, his 22nd double-double.

The finish marks the second time in 16 seasons that Kansas coach Self suffered 10 defeats. The last time the Jayhawks did not advance from the opening weekend was in 2015.

Pompeo extends ban on U.S. lawsuits against foreign firms in Cuba

April 3, 2019

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday extended by two weeks to May 1 a ban on U.S. lawsuits against foreign firms doing business in Cuba.

He did not give a reason for the extension.

The administration of President Donald Trump announced on March 4 it would allow lawsuits by U.S. citizens against dozens of Cuban companies on Washington’s blacklist.

However, it stopped short of the more severe step of allowing legal action against foreign firms who had used property confiscated by the Cuban government since the 1959 revolution – though it left the door open to doing so in the future.

The move marked an intensification of U.S. pressure on Cuba and also appeared aimed at punishing Havana over its support for Venezuela’s socialist president, Nicolas Maduro.

A complete lifting of the ban could let potentially billions of dollars in legal claims move forward in U.S. courts and likely antagonize Canada and European partners, whose companies have significant business holdings in Cuba.

State Department spokesman Robert Palladino urged companies doing business in Cuba to examine whether they “trafficked” in confiscated property.

“Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo announced his decision to continue for two weeks, from April 18 through May 1, 2019, the current suspension with an exception of the right to bring an action under Title III of the 1996 Cuban Liberty and Democratic Solidarity (LIBERTAD) Act,” Palladino said.

Trump’s administration first announced in January a 45-day review of the matter.

Back on trend? H&M makes AI, loyalty drive to ride fashion cycle

BERLIN/STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – When H&M boosted its shares last month by reporting a rise in the sale of full-price garments, it wasn’t just a tribute to the fashion sense of its designers. It was a sign that backroom improvements are at last paying off.

The world’s second-largest fashion group is investing heavily in areas like artificial intelligence and customer loyalty as it looks to improve the way it spots trends and plans logistics, and ultimately reduce discounted sales and piles of unsold stock.

Arti Zeighami, H&M’s head of advanced analytics and artificial intelligence, told Reuters the strategy is starting to bear fruit as the company extends pilot projects that seek to use data to match supply and demand more closely.

“Allocating the right goods to the right stores in the right markets is one of the key projects we are working on,” Zeighami said. “For 2019 we have huge plans for growing that and hopefully, by the end of next year, covering globally.”

In the age of social media, fashion companies have less power to drive trends, which come and go much more quickly as influencers promote their “outfit of the day” on Instagram.

That poses a particular problem for H&M, which produces most of its garments in Asia, far from its major markets, making it less responsive than its rival Zara-owner Inditex which boasts it can get new designs to its stores within a week.

Sportswear brand Adidas admitted last month it had been caught flat-footed when its suppliers failed to keep up with strong U.S. demand for its mid-priced clothing ranges.

H&M had seen stocks of unsold goods pile up over the past three years.

IMPROVEMENTS IN BUYING

In the quarter through February, inventories grew to 40 billion crowns ($4.3 bln), or 18.6 percent of sales, but H&M said they consisted of a higher share of clothes that are newer, thus less likely to be sold at marked-down prices.

It has said this is a sign its overhaul is working, and it expects a better offering and improvements in buying and logistics to help it reduce inventories to between 12 and 14 percent of sales by the end of 2022.

“Companies like ours once dictated fashion in a certain way. Today fashion is growing organically: you have influencers, you have communities,” Zeighami said. “It is hard sometimes to quantify. Is it orange or pineapple, tassel earrings or choker?”

Danske Bank analyst Daniel Schmidt said a small increase in gross margin and management promises of smaller markdowns for a third straight quarter suggests H&M’s profits have finally hit bottom.

“Even though stocks are high, their quality is probably better than we can see,” Schmidt said.

H&M Chief Executive Karl-Johan Persson said last month investment in AI was already helping predict trends and allocate garments to stores: “Over time, this will mean a lot of improvements.”

Companies in a range of industries are touting AI as the answer to their most pressing business problems, but many experts caution it may not live up to the hype.

Zeighami said he prefers to call it “amplified intelligence” because he wants to mine data to help humans make better decisions.

He cited the example of a maths model which showed mass market demand peaks when an influencer trend is going down. One designer he showed it to said having such data would have helped her stand up to buyers who jumped on a trend too late.

CUSTOMER LOYALTY

“She had the gut feeling, so us amplifying that would help her to take the right decision and overrule the buyers,” he said.

At rival Zara, merchandising teams use data gleaned from stores, webpages and app to adapt their designs, in addition to insights from social media, returns and reviews, with the entire stock gradually refreshed every four to five weeks.

Unlike Zara, H&M also has a fast-growing customer loyalty scheme from which it is harvesting information, in addition to analyzing data from social media.

The club, which doubled membership to 30 million in 2018, is in 16 of the H&M brand’s 71 markets and will add seven more including the United States by the end of the year.

Samuel Holst, head of the H&M Club, said another eight markets would be added in 2020 and he expected to keep up the membership growth rate.

Holst hopes new functions such as members gaining bonus points for reviewing garments and, later this year, for sustainable actions such as recycling clothes, will help H&M understand shoppers.

“Knowing our customers – having this insight, knowing where, how and when they shop, knowing what they like – that is an important piece in how we will be able to predict trends,” Holst told Reuters.

“The better we know the customer the better we can do this,” Holst said. “That is the foundation for being able to have very good inventories with a healthy rotation of the garments.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said trade talks with China are going very well, as the world’s two largest economies seek to end talks with a trade agreement to defuse tensions.

Trump said on Thursday he would soon host China’s President Xi Jinping at the White House.

Earlier this week, the White House said that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer would travel to Beijing for more talks on a trade dispute marked by tit-for-tat tariffs between the two countries.

MOSCOW/MINSK (Reuters) – Russia is confident it can soon resolve a problem of polluted Russian oil contaminating a major pipeline serving Europe and affecting supplies as far west as Germany, a senior official said on Friday at talks with importers about the issue.

Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin did not give a precise timeframe but Moscow has previously said it would pump clean oil to the border with Belarus from April 29, seeking to end a crisis hitting the world’s second-largest crude exporter.

Sorokin was speaking at talks with officials from Belarus, Poland and Ukraine in Minsk on the issue. Belarus said the issue had cost it $100 million, while analysts say alternative supply routes for refiners cannot fully fill the gap.

Poland, Germany, Ukraine and Slovakia have suspended imports of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline. Halting those supplies has knock-on effects further along the network.

The problem arose last week when an unidentified Russian producer contaminated oil with high levels of organic chloride used to boost oil output but which must be separated before shipment as it can destroy refining equipment.

Russia’s Energy Ministry said pipeline monopoly Transneft and other Russian companies had a plan to mitigate the effects of the contaminated oil. It did not give details.

Russian officials have said contaminated oil has already been pumped into storage in Russia and Friday’s talks would focus on how to partially withdraw the tainted crude from the Druzhba pipeline running via other countries.

The suspension cuts off a major supply route for Polish refineries owned by Poland’s PKN Orlen and Grupa Lotos, as well as plants in Germany owned by Total, Shell, Eni and Rosneft.

Some refiners have outlined plans for alternative supplies, but analysts say other routes cannot meet the shortfall.

OIL PRICES

Ukraine’s Ukrtransnafta suspended the transit of oil through the pipeline on Thursday, closing supplies via Druzhba’s southern route to Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

The pipeline issue, which has supported global oil prices, lifted Russian Urals crude differentials to an all-time high on Thursday.

With pipeline supplies to Europe shut, Russia faces a challenge of how to divert about 1 million barrels per day (bpd) that was meant to be shipped through the network to other destinations at the time when export capacity is at its limits.

State-run Russian Railways held talks with energy firms on using up to 5,000 rail tankers to transport crude, RIA news agency reported on Friday.

Concerns about the quality of Urals crude also caused delays in loadings at the Baltic port of Ust-Luga, when buyers refused to lift cargoes, resulting in a brief shutdown of the port on Wednesday and Thursday. An Ust-Luga official and traders said on Friday loadings had resumed.

Russian loading plans indicate it aims to boost Urals exports in May before the expiry of a deal on output cuts agreed with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, Reuters calculations and Energy Ministry data show.

The provisional loading plan for Russia’s Baltic Sea ports and Novorossiisk in May show exports rising to 10.7 million tonnes, the highest level in half a decade.

Minsk estimated its loss from lower oil product exports due to contaminated Russian oil at around $100 million, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported on Thursday, citing Belarusian state oil company Belneftekhim.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, in charge of government energy policy, said this week that those found responsible for contaminating the oil could be fined. He did not provide names.

(Reuters) – India has once again delayed the implementation of higher tariffs on some goods imported from the United States to May 15, a government official said on Friday.

The new tariff structure was to come into force from May 2, the spokeswoman said without citing reasons for the delay.

Angered by Washington’s refusal to exempt it from new steel and aluminum tariffs, New Delhi decided in June last year to raise the import tax from Aug. 4 on some U.S. products including almonds, walnuts and apples.

But since then, New Delhi has repeatedly delayed the implementation of the new tariff.

Trade friction between India and the U.S. has escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans earlier this year to end preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry for up to $5.6 billion worth of its exports to the United States.

In a further blow, U.S. on Monday demanded buyers of Iranian oil stop purchases by May or face sanctions, ending six months of waivers which allowed Iran’s eight biggest buyers including India to continue importing limited volumes.

One of Joe Biden’s newly-hired senior advisers has seemingly had a very recent change of heart.

Symone Sanders, a prominent Democratic strategist and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., staffer in 2016, was announced as one of the big-name members of Team Biden on Thursday.

But Sanders, who has also served as a CNN contributor, is seen in resurfaced footage from November 2016 expressing her opposition to a white person leading her party after Donald Trump’s election.

“In my opinion, we don’t need white people leading the Democratic party right now,” Sanders told host Brianna Keilar during a discussion on Howard Dean potentially becoming DNC chairman.

BIDEN HIRES FORMER BERNIE SANDERS’ SPOKESPERSON AS SENIOR ADVISER

“The Democratic party is diverse, and it should be reflected as so in leadership and throughout the staff, at the highest levels. From the vice chairs to the secretaries all the way down to the people working in the offices at the DNC,” she said.

Sanders wrapped up her remarks by saying: “I want to hear more from everybody. I want to hear from the millennials and the brown folks.”

Footage of the interview was resurfaced by RealClearPolitics.

After news of her hiring broke on Thursday, Sanders backed her new boss on Twitter.

TRUMP ASSESSES 2020 DEMS; TAKES SWIPES AT BIDEN, SANDERS; DISMISSES HARRIS, O’ROURKE; SAYS HE’S ROOTING FOR BUTTIGIEG

“@JoeBiden & @DrBiden are a class act. Over the course of this campaign, Vice President Biden is going to make his case to the American ppl. He won’t always be perfect, but I believe he will get it right,” she wrote.

The hiring of Sanders has been viewed as another indication of the expected tough fight that Biden and Sanders are in for as the two frontrunners battle a deep Democratic field.

While Sanders himself didn’t torch Biden as he jumped into the race, it’s clear that many of his progressive supporters view the former vice president as a threat.

Biden’s entry into the race – at least in the early going – sets up a battle between himself and Sanders, who thanks to his fierce fight with eventual nominee Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic nomination, enjoys name ID on the level of the former vice president.

BIDEN VOWS THAT ‘AMERICA IS COMING BACK,’ SPARKING ‘MAGA’ COMPARISONS

Justice Democrats — who also called Biden “out-of-touch” – is an increasingly influential group among the left of the party. They’ve championed progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York as well as Sanders. The group was founded by members of Sanders 2016 presidential campaign.

Biden has pushed back against the perception that he’s a moderate in a party that’s increasingly moving to the left. Earlier this month he described himself as an “Obama-Biden Democrat.”

And Biden said he’d stack his record against “anybody who has run or who is running now or who will run.”

Former Democratic National Committee chair Donna Brazile – a Fox News contributor – highlighted that “Joe Biden can occupy his own lane in large part because he’s earned it. He’s earned the right to call himself whatever.”

But she emphasized that “elections are not about the past, they’re about the future…I do believe he has the right ingredients. The question is can he find enough people to help him stir the pot.”
