Trump Jr: Dems Trying to Distract Dad at Summit

President Donald Trump's eldest son is accusing Democrats of trying to distract his father during his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

Donald Trump Jr. told Fox News on Tuesday that he believed the Democrats deliberately scheduled the congressional testimony of Michael Cohen, the president's former fixer, opposite the summit in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Trump Jr. said that the Democrats were trying to "counterprogram the kind of progress" that could be achieved in the Vietnam gathering and that it was evidence of the "disdain" they hold for the president.

He also argued that it was proof the Democrats were more interested in scoring political points than in national security by attempting to "stymie" the denuclearization talks.

Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison for crimes including a campaign finance violation that he says was at the direction of the president.

New Diamond League won’t disadvantage African athletes: IAAF

(Reuters) – African athletes will not lose competition opportunities despite the introduction of a trimmer Diamond League format next year, the sport’s world governing body (IAAF) said on Sunday.

Diamond League meetings will be reduced from 14 to 12 competitions plus a final, with events longer than 3,000 meters excluded from the program.

Athletics Kenya (AK) president Jackson Tuwei had criticized the decision, saying it was unfair to drop 5,000m and 10,000m events in which African athletes have traditionally done very well.

IAAF President Sebastian Coe and CEO Jon Ridgeon met Tuwei during the World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus and provided assurances that Kenyan and other East African athletes would not be disadvantaged, the governing body said.

Coe clarified that the absence of the 5,000m from the official program would not prevent individual Diamond League meetings from running the event outside of the 90-minute broadcast window.

“We believe that ultimately these changes will be beneficial not only to Kenyan and East African distance runners, but to our leading athletes around the globe, because it will result in a stronger, higher-profile, commercially-successful annual showcase series for our sport,” Coe said in a statement https://www.iaaf.org/news/press-release/diamond-league-2020-5000m-kenya.

“And it’s important to remember that the IAAF will be creating other continental competition opportunities outside the Diamond League as we redesign the global calendar.”

The IAAF said the 3,000m was selected because the 5,000m runners, coaches and agents indicated they were unlikely to feature in all six races over that distance during the Diamond League series.

Ridgeon said the governing body will make further adjustments to the new Diamond League format at the end of the 2020 season.

Tuwei was pleased with the outcome of discussions held with the IAAF chiefs.

“I am satisfied that our athletes will receive sufficient opportunities to compete internationally in 2020 and I am reassured by the IAAF’s undertaking that the impact of these decisions will be considered again at the end of each season and Member Federations consulted about any changes that might be needed,” he said.

UN expert wants trial suspects in Khashoggi's killing named

An independent U.N. human rights expert has denounced Saudi Arabia's closed-door trials of suspects in the slaying of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and called on the kingdom to name the defendants.

Agnes Callamard, the special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions mandated by the U.N.-backed Human Rights Council, also put an onus on the five permanent U.N. Security Council countries.

Callamard said in a statement Thursday that the Saudi government invited representatives from the five countries to attend some court hearings.

She says China, France, Britain, Russia and the United States "risk being participants in a potential miscarriage of justice" and could be "complicit" if the trials turn out to involve violations of human rights law.

Callamard is leading a human rights probe into the Khashoggi's killing at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October.

The Latest: 2 favorites in Slovak president vote in the lead

Voting has ended in the first round of Slovakia's presidential election, and early results show the favorite candidates in a lead.

The Slovak statistics Office says that Zuzana Caputova has 38.87 percent of the vote with ballots from over 30 percent of polling stations counted on Saturday. The 45-year-old environmental and anti-corruption activist is in favor of gay rights and opposes a ban on abortion in the conservative Roman Catholic country.

Her strongest challenger Maros Sefcovic, an establishment figure who is the European Commission Vice-President, was running distant second with 18.83 percent. A pro-Russian candidate Stefan Harabin was third with 14.64 percent.

Andrej Kiska, a successful businessman-turned-philanthropist, is not standing for a second five-year term in the largely ceremonial post.

If no single candidate wins a majority on Saturday, a runoff will be held on March 30 in this central European nation of 5.4 million people.

Final results are expected Sunday.

Pepperell, Vegas monster birdie putts add to the lore of the 17th

PGA: THE PLAYERS Championship - Final Round

March 18, 2019

(Reuters) – Another chapter to the rich history of the 17th hole at the Players Championship was written on Sunday when two players in contention sank monster birdie putts within minutes of each other during the final round in Ponte Vedra Beach.

The island-green par-three at the TPC Sawgrass course in Florida has been the scene of much high drama over the years, and the thousands who congregated around the hole on Sunday were not disappointed.

First to fire them up was Eddie Pepperell, the ever-quotable Englishman whose game is almost as impressive as his dry sense of humor.

His tee shot stopped near the front of the green, 50-foot from the hole which was cut in its traditional Sunday position on the far right.

Pepperell’s rollercoaster putt climbed a slope, broke to the left and plunged downhill. As it neared the hole the ball broke hard to the right, before toppling in.

“I just figured it was going to be a tap-in,” he told reporters.

“I was kind of relieved I didn’t have to face a three-footer in front of all those people, and then obviously when it went in, what can I say, it was pretty awesome.

The effort lifted Pepperell to 14-under-par, which at the time looked to have given him a shot at winning but ultimately was only good enough for a share of third two shots behind champion Rory McIlroy.

The drama at the 17th was not over yet, however, as Jhonattan Vegas was in the next group to approach the hole.

The Venezuelan’s tee shot barely cleared the water and his ball stopped, unpromisingly for his birdie chances, some 70 feet from the hole.

Undeterred, he banged it home to join Pepperell at 14-under with the longest putt ever made at the hole, according to the PGA Tour.

“Absolutely mind blowing,” said Vegas, who also shared third place. “I mean, it never crossed my mind that I was going to make such a long putt on such a phenomenal hole.

“That’s kind of what you play golf for, to be in those kind of situations, with that crowd, it just doesn’t get any better … something I’ll remember forever.”

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

Lakewood police tweeted there were multiple fatalities but did not give a specific number. Six people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released, according to the paper.

Lanes in both directions were closed and expected to remain so into Friday morning.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
