(Reuters) – The pilot of the crashed Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX 8 jet had reported flight-control problems and wanted to return to the airport, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing the chief executive officer of the airline.

In recordings of his conversations with controllers, the pilot didn’t indicate any other external problems with the jet or the flight, like a bird collision, CEO Tewolde Gebremariam said, according to the report.

All 157 people on board the flight were killed in the Sunday crash.

Ethiopian Airlines did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Kim Jong Un under fire for flagrantly violating sanctions with his mysterious, growing fleet of luxurious vehicles

Despite the robust United Nations sanctions that have long been slapped upon North Korea – banning sales of luxury goods and vehicles to the nuclear weapons-procuring and human rights-abusing government – leader Kim Jong appears to have no problem curating an extravagant car collection, and flagrantly flashing the violations for the world to see.

“Chairman Kim’s expanding inventory of European and U.S.-manufactured or customized luxury and up-armored limousines represents the most obvious series of flagrant sanctions violations to date,” Hugh Griffiths, who for the past five years has a coordinated a U.N. panel of experts to monitor North Korea’s sanction-circumventing maneuvers, told Fox News. “This is because these vehicles are quite literally paraded at foreign summits, diplomatic meetings and other high-profile events in Singapore, Pyongyang and elsewhere."

A report released last week by a U.N. panel noted that investigations are underway concerning North Korea's acquisition of luxury goods, such as Rolls-Royce, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus vehicles. The panel found that the world’s largest container shipping line continued to “unwittingly transport prohibited items.”

KIM JONG UNWILLING TO SIT DOWN WITH TRUMP AGAIN, NORTH KOREA STATE MEDIA SAYS

Griffiths said the violations are hardly being kept secret.

"This is no clandestine activity taking place on the high seas, or at night, as is often the case with the illegal ship-to-ship transfers of coal or petroleum,” he said. “These vehicles are being paraded in front of the world's media.”

As was highlighted in the U.N. panel’s reports, the North Korean regime is illicitly exporting prized possessions in clandestine fashion, using anonymous shipping containers diverted from their stated destinations.

“There is a very real risk that if North Korea is able to divert such large items – even though the Security Council sanctions resolutions say that all cargo entering North Korea should be inspected – then North Korea will have few problems importing smaller but critical dual-use items for its nuclear and ballistic missile programs,” Griffiths noted.

Last October, Kim raised eyebrows when he rolled up in a new black Rolls-Royce to meet with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang. It was unclear how he'd managed to assemble such a swanky set of British-originated wheels.

The Rolls Phantom, worth almost $500,000, appears to have been produced between 2012 and 2017, according to the new U.N. report, at a British plant in Goodwood. How it got to North Korea remains an open question.

Previously, Kim had been seen cruising to high-profile meetings in a Mercedes Maybach S600 Pullman Guard limousine, estimated to be worth more than $1.5 million with its armaments and assortment of modifications. Moreover, a number of Lexus LX570 all-wheel-drive vehicles were being sported by the North Korean delegation at an inter-Korean summit a month earlier in Pyongyang.

But there might be much, much more to Dear Leader’s illicit fleet.

“It is not publicly known exactly how many vehicles Kim Jong Un possesses, but it is estimated that there are 100 to 300 vehicles inside special garages in North Korea,” said Dong Yong Kim, an expert investigator in international and security affairs and retired South Korean Air Force Officer and weapons director at the Korean Air and Space Operations Center. “Some were collected by his father and grandfather, all three have a different taste in cars.”

For one, grandfather Kim ll Sung was known to love U.S.-made Lincoln and Cadillac, with at least one such antique Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham spotted in use by a North Korean diplomat recently. In 2010, the year before the death of Kim's father Kim Jong il, Dong Yong said that a “special container” was documented to have crossed from China into North Korea carrying more than $3 million worth of Audis and a Mercedes.

“When Kim Jong ll was alive, he was known to be a Mercedes maniac,” Dong Jong continued, while the young reigning dictator has inherited that appreciation with his own “Western-obsessed” flavor. “Kim lived his childhood obsessed with many Western cultures. He loved basketball, is known for drinking only Perrier sparkling water and eating only Emmental Swiss cheese.”

NORTH KOREAN DEFECTOR ON KIM JONG UN’S 'LIES,' SURVIVING TORTURE, AND SUPPORTING TRUMP POLICY

Derived from what Kim has brandished through various summits and meetings in recent times, and based on Dong Jong’s extensive analysis, Kim at minimum owns a 2010~2011 Mercedes-Benz S600 Pullman Guard, Maybach 62 S, a Rolls-Royce Ghost, a Rolls-Royce Phantom, a Lexus LX570, a Mercedes G wagon and a Mercedes Maybach S600 Guard.

Yet his car collection is believed to be far from the factory floor. Known to be “security phobic,” the strongman is said to always have 12 highly elite bodyguards around him and all transportation vehicles are “bullet-proof, fire-proof, gad-proof and explosive proof.”

“These vehicles are capable of blocking most handguns and rifles with Full etal Jacket,” Dong Jong asserted. “And in terms of performance, two significant modifications are applied. One is an Electronic Computer Unit (ECU) chip to squeeze in more horsepower, the second is extra brake tuning.”

And then there another important annexation to the car collection.

Kim is also said to have a bevy of tailored toilet vehicles that trail him wherever he goes – never using a public restroom – which serves a double purpose of not enabling any sneaky outsiders to obtain health information from any waste matter left behind. This also helps cultivate his public perception as something of a mythical almighty.

But whether Kim himself can actually drive remains a subject of vigorous debate. As Dong Jong pointed out, textbooks issued to young schoolchildren in North Korea are focused on the “heroic ability” of their national chief, and even claim that Kim was able to drive a car at the age of 3; by 9, the story goes, he was racing boats against foreigners.

But the rumor among the defector community in Seoul is that Kim on occasion drives one of his VIP Benz cars late in the night in Pyongyang, and at one time complained that fellow drivers “were dumb,” a declaration that led to more tickets being handed out by police.

Dong Yong also pointed to the murky nature of purchases made by North Korea’s foreign diplomats. “There are many more unknown and unreported cases,” he said. “If you look at North Korea embassies overseas, those embassies all own at least one Mercedes-Benz.”

KIM JONG UN’S TRAIN TRAVEL TO VIETNAM HIDDEN BY CHINESE CENSORS

For one, the North Korean Embassy in Malaysia is alleged to have procured at least five high-end vehicles: Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Jaguar XJ, Audi A6, Lexus LS, and BMW X5; the North Korean ambassador to Malaysia reputedly owns two luxury vehicles: Jaguar XJ and Lexus LS with the number plate 28-01-DC, Dong Jong reported.

“The number 28 means North Korea – country designation – while 01 means the rank of embassy meaning ambassador, and the last two alphabets DC stand for 'Diplomatic Corps' in Malaysia,” he surmised. “It is rare to see one ambassador owns two luxury vehicles country like North Korea.

He added, for emphasis, "North Korea’s GDP per capita is about $1,800 (USD) which is lower than Syria.”

Given the hefty economic sanctions imposed on the Hermit Kingdom, Pyongyang’s auto industry is confined to just one mysterious manufacturer, Pyeonghwa Motors, which is only able to produce from a small pool of Asian makers. It is unknown how many cars are made there annually. The tally is widely assumed to be only a few thousand, if that, with Pyeonghwa Motors plagued by rumors it went out business some years ago. Now, the company may serve more as a nationalistic symbol.

Few in the impoverished nation are able to afford even a domestic car. While the price tag for a North Korean car hovers around $10,000, the yearly income for most is less than $1,300.

“North Korea always advertises its vehicles as the world’s best, but Kim Jong Un and his cabinet would never ride in them,” Dong Jong observed. “Because most people can’t afford to buy a car there, most people travel by bicycle or just walk.”

The onus is now on U.N. Security Council member states to determine what should happen to these high-end vehicles, and it is up to governments to put pressure on global banks, traders and insurers to go after the culprits, but Griffiths underscored that the panel’s work is far from over.

“We will continue to investigate how the latest Maybach Mercedes and the Rolls-Royce got to North Korea, as well as the companies and individuals responsible for these transfers,” he said. “Past panel reports show that the same networks exporting prohibited military equipment from North Korea to Africa were also involved in the import of some of the Mercedes-Benz to North Korea."

According to Dong Jong, what has been exposed so far about the regime chief’s car collection is merely the “tip of the iceberg,” and he anticipates that there is at least one major global company – yet to be named – responsible for injecting illegal opulence into the closed country.

“Providing luxurious cars to Kim Jong Un is a crime, and those who support such delivery are also committing a crime,” he added.

Zuma-era officials feature on South Africa’s ANC election list

By Alexander Winning

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) has included two prominent politicians linked to corruption under former President Jacob Zuma in its list of candidates for parliament ahead of an election in May.

The inclusion of figures like former finance minister Malusi Gigaba and ex-mines minister Mosebenzi Zwane calls into question the ANC’s pledge to distance itself from people who have tarnished the reputation of the party, analysts said.

“The ANC list is very revealing,” said political analyst Ralph Mathekga. “It says that despite what went on under Zuma, ANC branch members do not see any crisis. They are rejecting (President Cyril) Ramaphosa’s anti-corruption message by choosing Zuma allies.”

Ramaphosa, whose pledge to tackle corruption is a centerpiece of the ANC’s election campaign, is first on a list of the party’s parliamentary candidates submitted to the country’s election commission. Deputy President David Mabuza and ANC chairman Gwede Mantashe are in second and third places.

Gigaba and Zwane are lower down the list, which shows the candidates the ANC’s branches want to see in parliament and also includes Ramaphosa allies like Finance Minister Tito Mboweni and Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan.

An ongoing presidential inquiry into state corruption – called “state capture” in South Africa – under Zuma’s tenure has heard evidence that Gigaba and Zwane helped the Gupta family, friends of Zuma, enrich themselves. Gigaba and Zwane deny wrongdoing. They were not available for comment on Friday.

A spokesman for Zuma directed a request for comment to the ANC. The ANC said it had chosen its candidates by a “rigorous, thorough and fair process”.

“There are concerns raised in the media about some of the candidates on our lists. Like all political parties our members are subjected to the law of the land. … The mere public mention of wrongdoing and corruption by an individual does not make that person guilty,” the ANC said in a statement.

A senior ANC source allied to Ramaphosa dismissed concerns that tainted former officials from the parliamentary list would make it into Ramaphosa’s cabinet if the ANC wins in May. The majority of the president’s cabinet is comprised of lawmakers.

“This list says nothing about the next cabinet, that is the prerogative of the president. My sense is the cabinet will be lean and credible,” the source said.

Ramaphosa is trying to reverse a slide in voter support for the ANC, which has won every election since the end of white minority rule in 1994. Analysts predict the ANC will win more than 50 percent of this year’s vote, but they differ over the expected margin of victory.

Investors want to see evidence that Ramaphosa is following through on his pledge to root out corruption, as it hurts business confidence and acts as a brake on economic growth.

“Ramaphosa’s strategy is to turn a blind eye to state capture when it comes to the election list and allow the criminal justice system to take people out after the election,” said Peter Attard Montalto, head of capital markets research at Intellidex. “However such a strategy is high-risk.”

Mixed Martial Arts: Stallone says McGregor is at a crossroad in his life

March 17, 2019

(Reuters) – Actor Sylvester Stallone says he believes Conor McGregor is at a crossroad in his life after the MMA fighter’s latest arrest and an earlier loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“If he can’t overcome his fear and beat this man, I think it’ll plague him for the rest of his life,” Stallone, a minority owner of the UFC, told TMZ Sports.

McGregor was arrested in Miami Beach last week after a fan said the Irish mixed martial arts fighter smashed his phone and walked off with the shattered remains, according to police records.

He was booked on suspicion of robbery and criminal mischief and later released on bond.

Nurmagomedov retained his UFC lightweight title with a submission victory over McGregor in October after which a brawl broke out with members of the Russian’s support team arrested.

The 72-year-old Stallone, famous for his action roles including boxer Rocky Balboa, said McGregor should tell himself: “Okay, I’ve gone through a very rough time. I’ve been somewhat publicly humiliated. I’m at a crossroad in my life … I have to overcome an incredible opponent who seems invulnerable.”

Stallone added he would like to see a rematch between McGregor and Nurmagomedov.

“This is a crossroad in his life,” Stallone said of McGregor. “This is probably the most important one because if he doesn’t live up to his ideal … if he can’t overcome his fear and beat this man, I think it’ll plague him for the rest of his life.”

Neither McGregor or a spokesman could be reached for immediate comment.

The fighter was charged in April 2018 with three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief after police said he attacked a charter bus in New York carrying UFC fighters.

He later pleaded guilty to a reduced disorderly conduct charge.

HuffPost Poll: 47% of GOP Says No Trump Campaign Crime

Forty-seven percent of Republicans voters believe no one on President Donald Trump's campaign committed any crimes, according to a poll conducted by HuffPost and YouGov.

The survey was conducted April 18-19, one day after the release of special counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Mueller, who turned in his report to Attorney General William Barr on March 23, neither charged nor exonerated Trump on obstruction of justice charges and also said neither Trump nor his campaign conspired with Russia to win the 2016 campaign.

But the Mueller report states "the president's efforts to influence the investigation were mostly unsuccessful, but that is largely because the persons who surrounded the president declined to carry out orders or accede to his requests."

The poll also found:

  • 61% of Republicans think the Trump campaign's relationship is not a problem at all.
  • 45% of Republicans strongly approve of the job Attorney General William Barr is doing, compared with 45% of Democrats who strongly disapprove.
  • 81% of Republicans do not believe Trump attempted to obstruct justice, while 78% of Democrats say he did.

The HuffPost/YouGov poll was conducted April 18-19 among 1,000 registered voters and has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.

A look at the field: Major players in Israel’s elections

It's a crowded field in Israel's elections as over 40 parties will be slugging it out on Tuesday for seats in the country's parliament.

There is the right-wing flagship, centrist newcomers, ultra-Orthodox parties, Arab parties and fringe movements. But only a handful will win the necessary 3.25 percent of total votes cast to cross the electoral threshold needed to enter the Knesset.

Israeli democracy operates on a parliamentary system of proportional-representation in which the government needs a majority to rule. Since no party has ever earned more than 61 of the 120 seats in the Knesset, a coalition is required.

Polls show Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's rightist Likud in fierce competition with the centrist Blue and White party. Both camps are trying to rile up their bases to become the largest party in parliament while also convincing the smaller parties to join them in a coalition after the results become known.

Here's a look at the major players:

LONG-RULING LIKUD

Israel's conservative Likud party has dominated the political stage since 1977 with only a few exceptions, and it has controlled government for the past decade in large part thanks to Netanyahu's personality cult and strong base.

Netanyahu has brazenly allied himself with Israeli settlers and courted nationalist and ultra-Orthodox parties for his current coalition.

In past elections, Likud has depended on a groundswell of populist support from Mizrahi, or Middle Eastern, Jews who harbor deep-seated resentment toward Israel's European-descended founding elite and their social democratic brand of politics.

This constituency appears poised to support Netanyahu again, despite the attorney general's intention to indict him on three serious corruption charges.

If Netanyahu wins another term, he will be on track to become the longest serving leader in Israeli history. He'll also have to simultaneously lead the state while fighting criminal charges against him.

___

THE CENTRIST VANGUARD

Ex-army chief Benny Gantz shook up the scene when he announced the formation of a new party earlier this year, and several weeks later, when he formed a partnership with centrist politician and former television host Yair Lapid, head of the centrist Yesh Atid. Their joint Blue and White list presents the first viable challenge to Netanyahu's long rule.

If elected, Gantz would lead the government for the first two and a half years with Lapid taking over for the rest of the term.

The new coalition of centrists and former military officers has sought to mobilize a united front to oust the scandal-plagued Netanyahu, carrying the mantle of clean government, economic reform and respect for Israel's state institutions.

Gantz and his slate talk tough about standing up to Iran and striking Palestinian militants to appeal to hard-liners but have also hinted they won't foreclose future peace negotiations.

Although Blue and White has inched ahead of Likud in some polls, the party may find it more difficult to recruit suitable coalition partners.

___

THE NEW RIGHT

A pair of nationalist ministers, Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked, ditched their religious Jewish Home party and formed the "New Right" to attract a broader range of secular but still staunchly pro-settler voters.

They've promised to join Likud's coalition, along with a handful of other right-wing and religious parties, but their sudden maneuver hints that their political aspirations may extend beyond Netanyahu's corruption-stained rule.

Bennett, often the first to slam Netanyahu for his failure to deter Gaza rockets, is jostling for the position of defense minister.

As justice minister, Shaked has clashed with the Supreme Court, which she views as a bastion of the Israeli left that unfairly curtails her party's nationalistic agenda.

Their sardonic campaign ads have stirred online debate, including one that features Shaked spritzing herself with a faux perfume called "Fascism."

___

THE OLD LEFT

The venerable Labor party, once Israel's largest faction that founded the state and promoted a statehood deal with the Palestinians, has languished under decades of Likud rule and an impasse in the peace process. It now appears overtaken by Blue and White and can only hope to join a coalition led by the new front-runner of the center-left bloc.

The liberal Zionist Union party dramatically split early this year after Labor leader Avi Gabbay announced the end of his party's union with former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, embarrassing her on live television. Livni subsequently bowed out of politics, ending her storied 20-year career.

___

THE CONTROVERSIAL ALLIANCE

The religious Zionist party Bennett once headed, Jewish Home, has joined forces with Jewish Power, a far-right faction inspired by the banned Kahanist movement, branded a terrorist organization by the U.S. for an extremist agenda that includes forced expulsion of Palestinians.

Netanyahu helped cut the deal in order to give the parties a better shot at passing the parliamentary threshold and serving as a potential coalition partner.

Both at home and abroad, Netanyahu's overture to Jewish Power drew sharp condemnation.

___

THE ARAB VOTE

Arab parties, which represent over 20 percent of Israel's citizens, could help sway the vote — if their constituents vote.

In the last election cycle, four Arab factions joined forces into a single list, energizing voters and winning a record number seats in the Knesset — 13. But this year, political infighting split the slate, which looks likely to cut away at their overall numbers.

Low turnout could also be an issue. Netanyahu's campaign against Arab politicians, seen as incitement in the Arab sector, together with the new alliance with anti-Arab extremists and the passage of last year's contentious nation-state law, which enshrined Israel as the homeland of the Jewish people alone, have deepened calls for a ballot boycott in Arab communities.

But some hope these blows will have the opposite effect, fueling enough frustration to drive up the Arab participation rate. That could complicate Netanyahu's attempts to form a coalition as he fights for a fourth consecutive term.

Pope mandates reporting of sex abuse claims in Vatican City

Pope Francis has issued sweeping new sex abuse legislation for Vatican personnel and Holy See diplomats overseas, requiring the immediate reporting of abuse allegations to Vatican prosecutors, a policy shift aimed at being a model for the Catholic Church worldwide.

The mandatory reporting provision of the legislation published Friday marks the first time the Vatican has put into law requirements for Catholic officials to report allegations of sex crimes to civil authorities or face fines and possible jail time.

Francis also issued child protection guidelines for Vatican City State and its youth seminary, acting after the global sex abuse scandal exploded anew last year and The Associated Press reported that the headquarters of the Catholic Church had no policy to protect children from predator priests.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
