Tennessee bus driver convicted in crash that killed 6 kids indicted on statutory rape charges

A former school bus driver who was behind the wheel during a 2016 wreck that killed six children in Tennessee was indicted Monday on multiple charges of statutory rape.

Johnthony Walker, 26, was indicted by a Davidson County grand jury on eight counts of aggravated statutory rape and one count of exploitation of a minor, according to WSMV-TV.

ELDERLY TENNESSEE WOMAN MAULED TO DEATH BY SIX GERMAN SHEPHERDS IN VICIOUS ATTACK

Walker, who was out on bond while appealing his conviction for criminally negligent homicide and assault in the deadly 2016 crash, was arrested in June at a 14-year-old girl's home, WSMV-TV reported.

Walker admitted having sex with the teen, WSMV-TV reported, citing both an affidavit and a Nashville police sergeant's testimony.

The sergeant reportedly testified that Walker had concerns over the girl’s age and that he found it “repulsive” that it happened.

In March 2018, Walker was found guilty after the bus he was driving on Nov. 21, 2016, carrying 37 kids from Woodmore Elementary School, crashed on a winding road. More than 20 students were injured, in addition to the six who died.

Acting ICE boss Ron Vitiello, passed over for permanent job, to resign in days

The shakeup within the Department of Homeland Security’s leadership continued on Wednesday after it was announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Ron Vitiello would be stepping down on Friday.

Outgoing DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen issued a statement Wednesday announcing Vitiello’s departure and thanked him for his “unwavering” leadership.

“For over three decades, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Ron Vitiello has protected our homeland with courage and conviction,” the statement read. “Ron’s knowledge and expertise as a seasoned law enforcement professional has been invaluable to DHS, and he has left a legacy of excellence as our Department has expanded and refined our efforts to curb illegal immigration and secure our borders.”

NIELSEN RESIGNS AS DHS SECRETARY AFTER WHITE HOUSE MEETING WITH TRUMP

“On behalf of DHS I want to thank Ron for his service and dedication, and I wish him the very best in this next chapter of his career.”

An ICE official told Fox News that Vitiello’s last day will be Friday.

His departure was the latest in a string of resignations coming as President Trump has aimed to take a tougher stance against immigrants at the southern border.

After Nielsen’s resignation last Sunday, officials said Monday that Secret Service Director Randolph “Tex” Alles was stepping down, and DHS’ acting deputy secretary Claire Grady - who was technically next in line to replace Nielsen - resigned on Tuesday.

Trump over the weekend named Kevin McAleenan, the head of Customs and Border Protection, to serve as acting secretary.

All Blacks captain Read urges support for Muslim community after shooting

By Greg Stutchbury

WELLINGTON (Reuters) – All Blacks captain Kieran Read has urged his fellow New Zealanders to reject bigotry and support the country’s Muslim community after a mass shooting at two mosques in Christchurch on Friday.

The death toll from the shooting, carried out by a suspected white supremacist and described by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern as the country’s “darkest day”, rose to 50 on Sunday.

New Zealand Football (NZF) said on Sunday that one of those killed was Kuwait-born Atta Elayyan, the goalkeeper for the New Zealand futsal team, a version of indoor soccer that is played internationally.

“My heart goes out to the futsal community,” said NZF chief executive Andrew Pragnell.

“They are a very tight-knit group and this news of Atta’s death will be devastating for all involved in the game. We feel their pain and their grief.”

New Zealand’s top professional soccer team, the Wellington Phoenix, said they would remember Elyaan and the other victims at their A-League match against the Western Sydney Wanderers, which will go ahead on Sunday after consultation with police.

The third cricket test between New Zealand and Bangladesh that was due to start in Christchurch on Saturday was canceled after the tourists narrowly avoided being caught up in the shooting.

Rugby is New Zealand’s most popular sport, however, and the captain of the All Blacks, the most successful international team in the game, is typically almost universally respected.

Read’s statement of support for New Zealand’s small Muslim community would therefore have more resonance than might be the case in other countries.

“That this hate filled atrocity has happened in our back yard is beyond words,” Read, who was caught up in the city center lockdown at his daughters’ school on Friday as police searched for the gunman, wrote on his Instagram account.

“My heart goes out to the victims and their families, our Muslim community and the people of Christchurch.

“Our nation is experiencing a great loss of innocence in the face of all that happened. Bigotry and intolerance has no place here in Aotearoa (New Zealand). This is not who we are.

“Our strength lies in our diversity and while acts such as this are orchestrated in an attempt to divide us, love and unity will always prevail.”

“NOT A RELIGIOUS STATEMENT”

Read also plays for the Christchurch-based Canterbury Crusaders, whose Super Rugby match against the Otago Highlanders in Dunedin on Saturday was canceled after discussions between the teams and police.

The Crusaders adopted their name 23 years ago when rugby went professional but questions have been raised over its associations with the medieval religious wars between Christians and Muslims since the mosque attacks.

The franchise, which has won a record nine Super Rugby titles, issued a statement late on Saturday defending the name.

“We acknowledge and understand the concerns that have been raised,” it read.

“For us, the Crusaders name is a reflection of the crusading spirit of this community, and certainly not a religious statement.

“What we stand for is the opposite of what happened in Christchurch … our crusade is one for peace, unity, inclusiveness and community spirit.

“This team and the wider organization are united with our community in standing against such abhorrent acts … and in standing in support of our Muslim community.”

Read’s All Blacks team mate TJ Perenara also urged his compatriots to think about New Zealand’s Muslim community after witnessing the wider impact of the attacks on Saturday.

“I walked through the airport and saw Muslim people going about their day in fear, including one woman that I and a couple of others sat with while she cried,” the scrumhalf wrote on Instagram.

“I thought about how they were in fear as their community has been attacked … Once we have had time to grieve, it might be time for some uncomfortable conversations.”

ATHENS (Reuters) – Repaying earlier expensive International Monetary Fund loans is a significant step for Greece which will create favorable conditions for its economy, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Monday, promising more relief measures.

“We are gaining points of (economic) freedom,” Tsipras said during an interview with Greece’s Antenna television.

Greece this week plans to file a request to the euro zone’s bailout fund, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), seeking its consent for the early repayment of the loans, sources told Reuters earlier Monday.

The country emerged from its third international bailout since 2010 in August last year.

During the live interview, Tsipras also said that his administration would not lower a tax-free threshold, a measure which has been agreed with international lenders and is supposed to take effect next year to broaden the country’s tax base.

“The tax free (threshold) will not be reduced as long as Syriza is in government,” Tsipras said, referring to his left-wing party in power since 2015.

Elections are due later this year and the leftist leader ruled out an election earlier than that, vowing his government would see through its full term of 4 years.

Greece is expected to meet its fiscal targets again this year and any outperformance will be distributed to the public, Tsipras said.

“After the (Easter) holidays I will meet with the minister of finance to consider what we can offer, not as a pre-election gift but as permanent relief measures because the Greek economy is faring better.”

Dem Rep. Pocan Grills DeVos on Special Olympics Budget Cut

Amid a 2020 proposed budget cut for the special olympics brought forward by Trump administration Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., is taking a bow for reminding her 270,000 kids are seeing their support taken away.

"In @BetsyDeVosED's budget, there are major cuts to programs like the Special Olympics," Rep. Pocan tweeted Monday. "Sec. DeVos didn't know the number of kids who would be hurt by that cut, so I made sure she now knows that 272,000 kids are seeing their support taken away."

Secretary DeVos is widely being criticized for the proposed zeroing out of federal funding for the special olympics, to which she called "difficult decisions."

"Mr. Pocan, let me just say again, we had to make some difficult decisions with this budget," DeVos said during a House Appropriations Subcommittee hearing Monday. "I don't know the number of kids."

Rep. Pocan interrupted her to remind her it was 270,000 kids.

"Let me just say that the Special Olympics is an awesome organization – one that is well supported by the philanthropic sector as well," DeVos replied.

Pocan continued to attack the secretary on a proposed 26-percent cut to special education grants to states, among other cuts, asking "what is it where we have a problem with have with kids in special education. Why are we cutting all of thems programs over and over within this budget?"

DeVos' response was the budget has retained the funding levels for special education programs like IDEA in an overall budget than trims 10 percent. Pocan got testy over her pivoting off the specific programs he had mentioned.

"Supporting students with special needs, we have continued to hold that funding at a level amount in the context of a budget proposal that is a 10 percent reduction," DeVos said.

Pocan then finished with a rebuke of the cuts amid to a 15.6 percent increase in executive salary of appropriation.

French aviation experts see clear links in 2 Boeing crashes

The French civil aviation investigation bureau BEA has concluded there were "clear similarities" between this month's crash of an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX plane and a Lion Air plane crash last October.

The French bureau said Monday that black box data from the Ethiopian Airlines flight showed the links and will be used for further study.

Ethiopian authorities asked BEA for help in extracting and interpreting the crashed plane's black boxes because Ethiopia does not have the necessary expertise and technology.

The Ethiopian Accident Investigation Bureau intends to release a preliminary report within 30 days.

Police in South Korea investigate suspect in killings of 5

South Korean police are investigating a 42-year-old man accused of setting his apartment on fire and stabbing neighbors trying to flee, killing five people and injuring 13 others.

The violence Wednesday in the city of Jinju shocked the nation. Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon criticized police Thursday for what he saw as a failure to properly monitor a person known for past violence and clashes with neighbors.

City police say the suspect aggressively resisted arrest and has a history of mental illness. But they say he has not given a coherent statement on what happened Wednesday.

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.

Hundreds of Cuban migrants are reported to be on the run Friday in Mexico after a crowd of more than 1,000 burst out of a troubled immigration detention center on its southern border.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said the mass escape Thursday in Tapachula – which the Associated Press called the largest in recent memory — involved around 1,300 Cuban migrants, although 700 of them have since returned voluntarily.

The migrants reportedly streamed out of the compound without any resistance, as the institute said its agents weren’t armed and “there was no confrontation.”

Federal police with riot shields later rushed in to control the situation, as a crowd of angry Cubans whose relatives were being held at the facility gathered outside. The Cubans claimed their relatives reported overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at the facility.

BORDER PATROL UNION CHIEF BLASTS CONGRESS OVER MIGRANT CARAVANS: ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT’?

“My wife and child have been in there for 27 days in bad conditions,” said Usmoni Velazquez Vallejo, as he waited outside for news. “There is overcrowding, insufficient food and there isn’t even medicine for them.”

Another Cuban detainee told the AFP: “We have many there… we are very tight, we sleep on the floor.”

It’s the third time since October that migrants at the facility staged an uprising, according to the news agency.

The center’s holding capacity is officially listed at less than 1,000 people, but the escape of 1,300 meant it was probably at least at double its capacity, since not everyone being held there escaped. Residents in the area said that sometimes the facility has held as many as 3,000 people, and a Mexican newspaper cited by Reuters said Haitians and Central Americans also are among the large group who still have not been tracked down.

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

The Washington Post’s media critic went into meltdown after White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders held a mock press briefing for the children of White House journalists and employees on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

Erik Wemple, the newspaper’s chief media critic, slammed Sanders and the White House for organizing a fun day on Thursday for junior would-be journalists, while not holding an actual press conference for the record number of days.

WHITE HOUSE STAFF TO SKIP CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER AFTER LAST YEAR’S CONTROVERSY

Wemple wrote that Sanders gave to children an important lesson of “the centrality of nonaccountability mechanisms in the affairs of state” after she announced that the mock press briefing was “off the record.”

“When the children head home tonight, perhaps they can pull up archival footage to see how their questions stack up against ye olde press briefings,” he added.

“Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

“Tuesday, after all, marked a record for number of days without a White House press briefing. Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

While some correspondents praised the White House for doing “a lot of work to welcome the children and provide “them an excellent experience,” other journalists echoed Wemple’s criticism and pointed out that Sanders hasn’t held a press briefing in over 40 days.

“Kids of WH Press Corps members are getting ready for a briefing with  @PressSec. Their parents have not had one in 45 days,” tweeted CBS News’ White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang.

REPORTER SHOUTS AT SARAH SANDERS AFTER BRIEFING: ‘DO YOUR JOB, SARAH!’

“The irony of it is that they’re pretending that the White House press briefing is a thing, and they’re pretending that this is how the White House operates, but this is not at all how the White House operates … It’s a relic of an earlier time,” another correspondent quoted by the Post said.

The Post struck a different tune in a column earlier this year, which declared that despite the administration’s criticism of the media, President Trump was “extremely accessible.”

Wemple quoted Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project, who said that Trump held 338 “short question-and-answer” sessions over his time in office, significantly more than 75 such sessions by former President Barack Obama during his first full two years in office.
