Sarah Sanders: Calls for Trump’s Impeachment ‘Simply Sad’

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders called Democrats' calls to impeach President Donald Trump "simply sad" and said Monday party members have been trying to find ways to attack him since 2016, when he defeated Hillary Clinton for the White House.

"They got beat because they had a bad candidate and we had a great candidate," Sanders told Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "Our candidate had a better message, a better vision, and outworked his opponent. They have been losing every day since."

Instead, Democrats could be working with Trump to "solve some of the big problems," Sanders said. "They have become not just an embarrassment for their party but an embarrassment for public service because they are not providing the service which they were elected to actually fulfill."

She also slammed CNN's April Ryan, after the reporter Friday called for Sanders to be fired after special counsel Robert Mueller said in his report Sanders had lied when she told reporters "countless" members of the FBI welcomed Trump's decision to fire former FBI Director James Comey.

Sanders took particular offense at Ryan's saying "you have to start lopping the heads off" when a lack of credibility is found.

"I have had reporters say a lot of things about me," she said. "They've said I should be choked. They've said I should deserve a lifetime of harassment. I certainly never had anybody say I should be decapitated — this takes us to a new low even for the liberal media. I think it just once again proves why this journalist isn't taken seriously."

Trump formally recognizes Israeli control of Golan Heights

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Monday recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, reversing more than a half-century of U.S. policy.

Standing alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Trump made formal a move he announced in a tweet last week. The president said it was time for the U.S. to take the step after 52 years of Israeli control of the strategic highlands on the border with Syria.

Netanyahu had pressed for such recognition for months. Trump's action gives him a political boost weeks before what's expected to be a close Israeli election.

Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war but its sovereignty over the territory is not recognized by the international community.

"Today, aggressive action by Iran and terrorist groups in southern Syria, including Hezbollah, continue to make the Golan Heights a potential launching ground for attacks against Israel — very violent attacks," Trump said.

"This should have been done numerous presidents ago," Trump said.

The two leaders met as the Israeli military was striking Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip in response to a rocket that hit a house north of Tel Aviv and wounded seven people.

"Israel is responding forcefully to this wanton aggression," said Netanyahu, who planned to return to Israel to manage the attack following his meeting with Trump and other U.S. officials, including Vice President Mike Pence.

He added: "Israel will not tolerate this. I will not tolerate it."

In a speech earlier Monday, Pence said the rocket attack "proves that Hamas is not a partner for peace." Pence told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee that "Hamas is a terrorist organization that seeks the destruction of Israel, and the United States will never negotiate with terrorist Hamas."

The rocket destroyed a residential home in the farming community of Mishmeret, north of the city of Kfar Saba. The sounds of air raid sirens jolted residents of the Sharon area, northeast of Tel Aviv, from their sleep shortly after 5 a.m., sending them scurrying to bomb shelters. A strong sound of an explosion followed. The Israeli military quickly mobilized troops and called up reserves, setting the stage for a potential major conflagration shortly before Israel's upcoming elections.

Netanyahu arrived in Washington on Sunday for what was to have been a three-day visit.

In his remarks, Pence also took issue with comments by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., that he said were anti-Semitic. Omar, a first-term lawmaker who is one of two Muslim women in Congress, has alleged that congressional support for Israel reflected "allegiance to a foreign country" and that Israel "has hypnotized the world." She also has accused Americans who support Israel of being bought off by campaign donations.

"Anti-Semitism has no place in the Congress of the United States, and any member who slanders those who support the historic alliance between the United States and Israel with such rhetoric should not have a seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee," Pence said.

China ratchets up pressure on Canada amid Huawei dispute

China says its suspension of the license of a second major Canadian canola exporter is justified by safety concerns, as the sides continue to feud over Ottawa's detention of a top executive of Chinese telecom giant Huawei.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Wednesday that China's actions were "scientific and reasonable," but added that Canada should "take practical measures to correct the mistakes it made earlier" in dealing with the overall relationship.

China's suspension Tuesday of the license of canola seeds from Viterra Inc., citing hazardous organisms in shipments, is a blow to $2 billion worth of exports widely seen as retaliation for Canada's arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei's founder.

China earlier had halted imports from Canada's other major canola exporter, Richardson International Ltd.

Dershowitz: Barr Won’t Be Pressured on Mueller Report

Attorney General William Barr "very much" wants to bring the Department of Justice back to its origins as a nonpartisan law enforcement agency, and he wants to produce special counsel Robert Mueller's report according to the law, Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz said Wednesday.

"He's not going to be pressured by the president or the Democrats, not going to be pressured by the Republicans," Dershowitz told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "He's going to do it the right way. That's the projected image that he wants to convey. He is the right guy to do it."

It is also likely Barr had some advance knowledge about what was coming in Mueller's report before it had been turned over to him, as he had time to think about what his statement would be about it, Dershowitz said, adding it is also up to Barr, as attorney general, to decide what would be released.

"It is the attorney general who has the authority to indict, prosecute, or not prosecute," Dershowitz said. "I think he is doing exactly the right thing."

He added he does not know why Mueller declined to review the four-page document Barr released about his report, except for wanting to have deniability.

Meanwhile, Dershowitz said he expects the report will be critical when it comes to whether President Donald Trump committed obstruction.

"One key issue that nobody raised, will we know the names of the people on each side" of the obstruction issue, Dershowitz said. "Will we know the individual names of the prosecutors on the team so we the public can assess whether it's a partisan political decision or a neutral prosecutorial decision?"

Teenager dies at London’s St Paul’s Cathedral after falling 98 feet from gallery

A teenager in Britain fell to his death Monday from the whispering gallery inside St Paul's Cathedral in London.

Police and paramedics arrived shortly to the scene, but couldn’t save the life of the man in his late teens after falling from about 98 feet high to the floor.

Police said the death isn’t being treated as suspicious.

MAN FELL TO DEATH ATTEMPTING TO CLIMB PHILADELPHIA'S MASONIC TEMPLE, POLICE SAY

“We were called to St Paul's Cathedral on Monday 1 April 2019 at 15:57 to a report of a male in his late teens who had fallen from the gallery within the building,” police said in a statement, according to Sky News.

"The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and police officers attended. His death is not being treated as suspicious,” it added.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson told the broadcaster: "We were called at 3:58pm yesterday (1 April) to reports of an incident on St Paul's Churchyard, City of London.

“We sent a number of resources to the scene including an incident response officer and London's Air Ambulance. Sadly, despite the efforts of medics, a person died at the scene.”

Tucker Says Trump Might Not Want to be Re-Elected

In a blistering attack on Trump hiking gas taxes, which directly impacts working class rural people who voted for him, Tucker Carlson suggested that the president might not want to be re-elected.

“Everyone assumes he wants to be re-elected, most presidents do, but what if Donald Trump decided he’s had enough?” asked Tucker, adding, “Too many investigations, too much nastiness, too few upsides.”

“It wouldn’t be a crazy conclusion, how would you like to spend your seventies locked in the White House?” Carlson pondered.

The Fox News host pulled no punches by suggesting Trump “wants to lose” because of the policies he is enacting which go against the platform he ran on. These include;

– Half a billion dollars in medicare cuts
– Slashing funding for the e-verify program, allowing companies to keep hiring illegal aliens
– Bringing in more low skilled workers via legal immigration, pushing down the wages of the people who voted for him
– Releasing drug dealers onto the streets
– Continuing the “pointless military intervention in Syria”
– Raising gas taxes, economically impacting the poorest who voted for Trump

Tucker said that if Trump enacted all those policies, it could only mean he “just wants out,” making the point that numerous other things, such as foreign lobbying, capital gains, and giant corporations like Amazon, which uses public roads to deliver its packages, could be taxed instead of gas.

By “hiking taxes on working class rural people,” Tucker suggested that Trump was abandoning his base and wants to “retire early”.

British PM Theresa May suffers another major defeat on revised Brexit deal, as clock ticks down

British Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal was given another thumping defeat in Parliament on Tuesday, despite her last-minute efforts to secure concessions from E.U. leaders -- just weeks before Britain is set to leave the bloc.

The withdrawal agreement, hashed out with European leaders in 2018, was defeated 391-242, despite a dramatic, last-minute trip to Strasbourg by May on Monday, after which she had declared she had secured legally binding changes to the deal in an effort to appease parliamentarians. It was the second such defeat for the bill, after it was rejected 432-202 in January -- the largest defeat for a prime minister in the history of the House of Commons.

THERESA MAY'S BREXIT DEAL FACES NEW VOTE IN BRITISH PARLIAMENT: WHAT TO KNOW

May and her allies had sought to rally MPs to the deal in the hours before the vote, with a series of speeches urging lawmakers to back the deal to make sure Britain can leave the bloc with a deal on March 29.

“There is only one certainty if we don’t pass this vote tonight and that is that uncertainty will continue for our citizens and for our businesses,” a hoarse May warned MPs in the House of Commons.

“The reality is that we face a fork in the road, it is time to choose, it is time to support this deal, it is time for our country to move forward,” Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay said moments before the vote.

Much of the opposition to the deal on the right comes from concern over the “backstop” -- a safety net by which the U.K. temporarily remains in a customs union until a trade deal in secured, so as to avoid a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

“Brexiteers” have pointed to the lack of a unilateral exit mechanism in the backstop as evidence that it could lead to Britain never leaving the bloc, or being forced to accept unfavorable trading terms. May returned late Monday from a last-gasp meeting with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, and announced that she had in fact secured "legally binding" changes to the agreement to prevent a permanent backstop.

But May's brief hopes of it moving the needle were dealt a blow on Tuesday when Attorney General Geoffrey Cox told the House of Commons that while the new clauses “enhance” the agreement, it does not change the fundamental risk.

MACRON SAYS EU MAY BLOCK UK'S BREXIT PLAN: 'THE TIME HAS COME FOR THE BRITISH TO MAKE CHOICES'

The legal risk...remains unchanged,” he told the House. “The question for the House is whether, in light of these improvements, as a political judgement, the House should now enter into those arrangements.”

May urged pro-Remain MPs to respect the 2016 referendum result, while telling pro-Brexit MPs that no Brexit at all was a real risk if they were to vote down her deal.

“Members across the aisles should ask themselves if they want to make the perfect the enemy of the good,” she said.

Labour Party MPs slammed May for her handling of Brexit and for her deal, accusing her of promoting a “blindfold Brexit.”

“For many honorable members the biggest concern is that her agreement provides no legal certainty about any of the fundamental questions about our future relationship with the E.U.” MP Liz Kendall told May. “As a result we will be back here time and time again and, far from providing certainty for the future, her blindfold Brexit is the most uncertain future for our country of all.”

It appeared that her concessions from Europe weren't enough to move two key groups -- the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), and the pro-Brexit European Research Group (ERG) of Tory MPs -- who both indicated they would oppose the deal even with the new changes.

ANTI-BREXIT MPS BREAK AWAY FROM BOTH MAIN PARTIES, FORM PRO-EU INDEPENDENT GROUP

“The only reason for voting for the deal, which remains a bad deal...is the fear that if the deal is voted down then we might not leave the European Union,” ERG Chair Jacob Rees Mogg told Sky News. “That would be the one thing that would change people’s minds but I don’t think that is the case.”

The rejection of May's deal leaves Britain scheduled to leave the bloc with no deal on March 29, reverting Britain to World Trade Organization (WTO) terms with the E.U. Business groups, members of May's government and pro-Remain MPs have warned that such a “no deal” Brexit will cause havoc, but pro-Brexit MPs have brushed off that fear as overblown.

Parliament is now scheduled to vote Wednesday on a “no deal” Brexit -- a motion likely to be voted down. Should that happen, on Thursday a motion to delay Brexit past March 29 date of departure will be voted on.

May will almost certainly face further calls for either her resignation, or to call for a new general election to break the parliamentary stalemate. May has so far fended off a vote of no confidence from her own party in December, and a vote of no confidence in the government in January.

CLICK HERE FOR THE FOX NEWS APP

Should the Commons vote to delay Brexit, it is unclear if the E.U. will even accept the call to delay Britain’s departure -- and could even demand a re-do of the referendum as part of the terms to accept such a delay.

French President Emmanuel Macron said this month that “under no circumstances would we accept an extension without a clear perspective” from the British.

"We don't need time, we need decisions," he said.

The Latest on fatal pileup on Interstate 70 near Denver (all times local):

10:10 a.m.

Colorado officials say four people have died after a semi-truck hauling lumber plowed into vehicles on Interstate 70, causing a fire so intense that it melted the roadway and metal off of cars.

Authorities had to wait until daylight Friday to confirm the death toll from Thursday’s 28-vehicle pileup because of the devastation caused by the fire.

Six people were taken to hospitals with injuries. Their conditions are unclear.

Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman says the driver of the truck who caused the crash sustained minor injuries. He has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

Officials say the driver was headed down a hill when he slammed into slower traffic. Countryman says there is no indication the crash was intentional.

7:40 a.m.

A truck driver blamed for causing a deadly pileup involving over two dozen vehicles near Denver has been arrested on vehicular homicide charges.

Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman said Friday that there’s no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in Thursday’s crash.

The unidentified driver was headed down a hill on Interstate 70 when he slammed into slower traffic and sparked a massive fire. Countryman said police are looking at whether his brakes were working properly.

He said 28 vehicles were involved, up from the initial 15 vehicles police reported after further sorting through the burned wreckage.

Police still say there were multiple fatalities but are still working to provide an exact number.

The highway is expected to remain closed until Saturday.

Tiger woods celebrates after winning the 2019 Masters
FILE PHOTO: Golf – Masters – Augusta National Golf Club – Augusta, Georgia, U.S. – April 14, 2019 – Tiger Woods of the U.S. celebrates on the 18th hole after winning the 2019 Masters. REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson

April 26, 2019

Tiger Woods is sending a message that he thinks he still has enough left, emotionally and physically, to win three more major championships to tie Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 titles.

Speaking to GolfTV in his first sit-down interview since the Masters, Woods said he has taken some time off since his victory at Augusta National, which still doesn’t feel real.

“Honestly, it’s hard to believe,” Woods said. “I was texting one of my good friends last night … that I couldn’t believe that I won the tournament. That it really hasn’t sunk in. I haven’t started doing anything. I’ve just been laying there. And every now and again, I’ll look over there on the couch and there’s the jacket.”

That’s the fifth green jacket for the 43-year-old Woods, who hadn’t won a major tournament since the 2008 U.S. Open. Along the way, four back surgeries, a divorce and other personal issues derailed him.

He said he has been spending time with his children – daughter Sam, 11, and son Charlie, 10 – who weren’t born when their father was the most dominant golfer on the planet.

“They never knew golf to be a good thing in my life and only the only thing they remember is that it brought this incredible amount of pain to their dad and they don’t want to ever want to see their dad in pain,” Woods said. “And so to now have them see this side of it, the side that I’ve experienced for so many years of my life, but I had a battle to get back to this point, it feels good.”

He said he hopes – maybe expects — they’ll see this side again.

And no one will take Woods for granted at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black Course on Long Island, N.Y., which starts May 16.

Woods said he’ll be ready for a course he already conquered once in a major: the 2002 U.S. Open.

“I’m doing all the visual stuff, but I haven’t put in the physical work yet. But it’s probably coming this weekend,” he said.

Before Woods encountered health and personal problems, it was expected that topping Nicklaus’ major mark was “when” and not “if.” Then the certainty went away, but Woods thought he still had a chance.

“I always thought it was possible, if I had everything go my way. It took him an entire career to get to 18, so now that I’ve had another extension to my career – one that I didn’t think I had a couple of years ago – if I do things correctly and everything falls my way, yeah, it’s a possibility. I’m never going to say it’s not.

“Now I just need to have a lot of things go my way, and who’s to say that it will or will not happen? That’s what the future holds, I don’t know. The only thing I can promise you is this: that I will be prepared.”

Maria Butina, the Russian woman who was accused of being a secret agent for the Russian government, was sentenced to 18 months in prison Friday by a federal judge in Washington after pleading guilty last year to a conspiracy charge.

Butina, who has already served nine months behind bars, will get credit for time served and can possibly get credit for good behavior, the judge said. She will be removed from the U.S. promptly on completion of her time, the judge added, and returned to Russia.

MARIA BUTINA, ACCUSED RUSSIAN SPY, PLEADS GUILTY TO CONSPIRACY

An emotional and apologetic Butina said in court Friday she is “truly sorry” and regrets not registering as a foreign agent.

“I feel ashamed and embarrassed,” she said, adding that her “reputation is ruined.”

Butina has been jailed since her arrest in July 2018. She entered the court Friday wearing a dark green prison jumpsuit and spoke in clear English, with a slight Russian accent.

“Please accept my apologies,” Butina said.

Butina’s lawyer, Robert Driscoll, said after the sentencing they had hoped for a “better outcome,” but expressed a desire for Butina to be released to her family by the fall.

Prosecutors had claimed Butina used her contacts with the National Rifle Association and the National Prayer Breakfast to develop relationships with U.S. politicians and gather information for Russia.

Prosecutors also have said that Butina’s boyfriend, conservative political operative Paul Erickson, identified in court papers as “U.S. Person 1,” helped her establish ties with the NRA.

WHO IS MARIA BUTINA, THE RUSSIAN WOMAN ACCUSED OF SPYING ON US?

In their filings, prosecutors claim federal agents found Butina had contact information for people suspected of being employed by Russia’s Federal Security Services, or FSB, the successor intelligence agency to the KGB. Inside her home, they found notes referring to a potential job offer from the FSB, according to the documents.

Investigators recovered several emails and Twitter direct message conversations in which Butina referred to the need to keep her work secret and, in one instance, said it should be “incognito.” Prosecutors said Butina had contact with Russian intelligence officials and that the FBI photographed her dining with a diplomat suspected of being a Russian intelligence agent.

An official Sri Lankan police Twitter account was deleted after it misidentified an American human rights activist as a suspect in the country’s Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

On Thursday, police posted the names and photos of six people that they said were at-large suspects in the bombings that killed more than 250 people.

However, one of the names on the list was Muslim U.S. activist Amara Majeed, who quickly tweeted that she had been falsely identified.

“I have this morning been FALSELY identified by the Sri Lankan government as one of the ISIS terrorists that committed the Easter attacks in Sri Lanka. What a thing to wake up to!” she wrote.

SRI LANKA AUTHORITIES SAY EASTER ATTACK LEADER KILLED IN ONE OF NINE HOTEL BOMBINGS

She wrote in a follow-up tweet that the claim was “obviously completely false” and asked social media users to “please stop implicating and associating me with these horrific attacks.”

“And next time, be more diligent about releasing such information that has the potential to deeply violate someone’s family and community,” she continued.

Later, she wrote an update saying police apologized for wrongly mistaking her as a suspect.

Police said in a statement: “However, although one of the released images was identified as one Abdul Cader Fathima Khadhiya in the information provided by the CID, the CID has now informed that a) the individual whose image was labeled as Abdul Cader Fathima Khadiya is not in fact Abdul Cader Fathima Khadiya b) the individual pictured is not wanted for questioning c) Abdul Cader Fathima is the correct name of the suspect wanted by the CID.”

On Friday, the account, @SriLankaPolice2 was deleted with no explanation. Police did not release more information regarding the mistake.

Majeed, who founded “The Hijab Project” when she was 16 years old, told the Baltimore Sun that it was hurtful to be linked to the attacks.

“Sri Lanka is my motherland,” the Brown University student said. “It’s very painful to be associated with [the bombings].”

Mohamed Zahran, the suspected leader of the attacks which targeted six hotels and churches, killed himself in a suicide bombing at the Shangri-La hotel. Police also said they had arrested the second-in-command of the group, called National Towheed Jamaat. Catholic churches in Sri Lanka canceled all Sunday Masses until further notice over concerns that they remain a top target of Islamic State-linked extremists.
