South Korea considering sending special envoy to North Korea

South Korea says it is considering dispatching a special envoy to North Korea in an apparent effort to revive stalled nuclear talks.

Negotiations over North Korea's nuclear program have remained stalemated since a summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Vietnam last month ended without any agreement.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in is to travel to Washington next week to discuss the nuclear diplomacy with Trump.

Moon facilitated the U.S.-North Korean talks last year.

Moon's national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, told lawmakers on Thursday that his government is also considering sending a special envoy to North Korea. He didn't elaborate.

Moon's government wants reconciliation with North Korea and a negotiated solution of the nuclear dispute.

UK watchdog orders ringfencing of Big Four audit business

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s “Big Four” accounting firms must ringfence auditing from their consultancy work, the country’s competition watchdog said on Thursday in a response to book-keeping failures such as at construction company Carillion and retailer BHS.

“Auditors should focus exclusively on producing the most challenging and objective audits, rather than being influenced by their much larger consultancy businesses,” the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said.

Exemplifying the issue, regulators found PwC’s lead auditor of BHS spent two hours on its 2014 audit and 31 hours on more lucrative non-audit work, leaving the bulk of auditing work to juniors. PwC was fined a record 6.5 million pounds ($9 million) for its shortcomings.

Britain’s business minister Greg Clark has said he would introduce legislation to implement the CMA’s recommendations, which constitute the most radical reform of auditing yet after previous attempts by Britain and the EU to loosen the Big Four’s grip on the market have failed.

Yet operational separation of audit and consultancy at PwC, EY, Deloitte and KPMG would fall short of the full break-up that British lawmakers called for this month.

The CMA noted “difficulties with an immediate global structural split”, given the Big Four are international and Britain can only intervene in the UK.

The operational split should be reviewed by regulators after five years to see if tougher measures were needed, the CMA said.

AUDIT QUALITY

The audit practices of the Big Four should have their own management, accounts, pay policies, chief executive and board. Profit-sharing between audit and consultancy should be banned, and promotions and bonuses should be based on the quality of audits, the CMA said.

The Big Four, who audit nearly all of Britain’s blue chip companies, say ringfencing would do little to improve competition and standards, and proposed caps on how many companies they could audit to give smaller rivals a leg up.

But the CMA has not included this in its final recommendations.

The CMA confirmed its initial recommendation that the top 350 listed companies must hire two auditors, with one from outside the Big Four – a step some companies are leery about because of the extra cost. Both would be liable for the audit.

Regulators could allow “initial limited exceptions” to the joint audit rule for the biggest, most complex listed companies, the CMA said in a nod to a suggestion from lawmakers.

Grant Thornton and BDO, the nearest rivals to the Big Four in Britain, are far smaller and would find it hard to audit a major international company.

The CMA said a company which hired only a non-Big Four auditor would be exempt from the joint audit rule, but all exempt audits should face closer regulatory scrutiny.

Joint audits would remain until regulators decide choice and competition have improved enough to address the sector’s vulnerability to a Big Four firm going bust, the CMA said.

Shock Claim: Clinton Team Hatched ‘Blame Russia’ Plan Within 24 Hours Of Loss – Resulted In 675 Day Mueller Investigation

The narrative that eventually spawned the Mueller investigation was concocted in a gloomy room littered with discarded Shake Shack containers in November 2016.

Even though Hillary Clinton had delivered a concession speech the day before, Clinton and her team were not ready to give up yet, and so they needed a strategy to de-legitimize the election results.  They eventually decided on a plan to “blame Russia” for Hillary’s loss, and that included really pushing a narrative that the Trump campaign had colluded with the Russians to defeat Clinton.  As this plan was rolled out, this narrative was eagerly embraced by pro-Clinton members of federal law enforcement agencies, and it ultimately resulted in the 675 day Mueller investigation.  Robert Mueller issued nearly 2,800 subpoenas and conducted 500 witness interviews, and in the end he found that there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians…

“The investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities,” Mueller wrote in the report, according to Barr’s letter, which he sent to the chairmen and ranking members of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees.

Barr also said that the special counsel, which consisted of 19 lawyers, found no evidence “that any U.S. person or Trump campaign official or associate” conspired or “knowingly coordinated” with Russian efforts to use social media platforms to spread disinformation during the 2016 campaign. Nor did Trump associates conspire with Russians in the efforts to hack Democrats’ emails and disseminate them online.

Of course there wasn’t any collusion, because it was just a made up story by the Clinton campaign team that snowballed out of control.

Needless to say, President Trump is absolutely thrilled by the outcome of the investigation, and now he is calling on law enforcement to “look at the other side”

“It’s a shame that our country had to go through this. To be honest it’s a shame that your president had to go through this for – before I even got elected, it began. And it began illegally. And hopefully somebody is gonna look at the other side. This was an illegal takedown that failed, and hopefully somebody is going to be looking at the other side.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani went even further.  He called for “a full and complete investigation” to figure out where the charges that sparked the Mueller investigation originally came from in the first place…

“There has to be a full and complete investigation, with at least as much enthusiasm as this one, to figure out where did this charge emanate, who started it, who paid for it.”

But we don’t need an investigation to figure this out.

In a book entitled “Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Doomed Campaign”, two Clinton insiders revealed that the “blame Russia” narrative was invented during a post-election campaign meeting that had been called by John Podesta and Robby Mook

That strategy had been set within twenty-four hours of her concession speech. Mook and Podesta assembled her communications team at the Brooklyn headquarters to engineer the case that the election wasn’t entirely on the up-and-up. For a couple of hours, with Shake Shack containers littering the room, they went over the script they would pitch to the press and the public. Already, Russian hacking was the centerpiece of the argument.

Obviously they were looking for a way to steal the election from Trump, but that didn’t work.

But the mainstream media and federal law enforcement officials that were sympathetic to Clinton latched on to this narrative really hard, and it ultimately sparked the 675 day Mueller investigation.

This investigation has been an albatross around the neck of the Trump administration from the very beginning, and things probably could have gone very differently over the past two years if the focus had not constantly been on Robert Mueller.

And the damage that has been done to our relationship with Russia will probably never be repaired.  Sadly, it will be a gift that will keep on giving for a long time to come.

Fortunately, some members of Congress are now calling on the operatives that initiated these charges against Trump to be held accountable.  For example, check out what U.S. Representative Devin Nunes is saying

“This is the unravelling of the biggest political scandal in American history…remember, this dates back to late 2015, early 2016 & this began as nothing more/nothing less than a Clinton/Obama operation with a bunch of dirty cops at the FBI & career DOJ officials.” –@DevinNunes

And it is being reported that Nunes is actually ready to make “criminal referrals to AG Barr”

BREAKING:Rep. Devin Nunes says House Intel has evidence Clinton operatives & hi-level FBI & DOJ officials started Trump-Russia investigation in “late 2015/early 2016” & that House GOP will be making criminal referrals to AG Barr for officials who “perpetuated this hoax” for 3+ yrs

It will be extremely interesting to see where all of this goes.

Meanwhile, all over the nation those on the left that had been pinning their hopes on the Mueller investigation are now melting down in unison.  I really like how Susan Duclos made this point in her most recent article

The media meltdown stems from just one thing…. they helped create a narrative on behalf of Democrats after President Trump won the 2016 presidential election. They hammered that narrative, without proof, letting pundits, including a number of former Obama intelligence officials-turned-television talking heads, push conspiracy theories and outright libelous and slanderous allegations against the president, his family and associates, and then they began to believe their own narrative. When Mueller then ended his operation without indicting anyone close to the President for any type of collusion, they were caught flatfooted, and the meltdowns began.

And here is just a sampling of some of the quotes that we are getting from top Democrats…

Maxine Waters: “This is not the end of anything!”

Beto O’Rourke: “It is beyond a shadow of doubt that, once in office, the president of the United States sought to obstruct justice”

Kamala Harris: “I know and will know and do know how to prosecute the case against Donald Trump”

Chris Matthews: “How can they let Trump off the hook?”

In the end, I don’t expect the Democrats to give up.  There are desperate to get rid of Trump, and so they will inevitably start pushing new angles.

But at least the Mueller investigation is now mercifully over, and for that we should all be thankful.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Southwest Airlines Co <LUV.N>, which has been in negotiations with its aircraft mechanics union for six years, will be investigating the disruption behind an unprecedented number of out-of-service aircraft, its chief operating officer Mike Van de Ven said on Tuesday.

In a statement, Van de Ven said the number of Southwest aircraft out of service over the last week had driven cancellations, delays and other operational impacts, despite no change to the carrier’s maintenance programs, leadership or policies.

Trump team ‘confident’ no collusion in Mueller report: ‘This is a grand slam’

President Trump’s legal team projected confidence Friday that Special Counsel Robert Mueller did not find collusion connected to the president, as he turned over the results of his exhaustive probe into Russian meddling during the 2016 presidential election.

“This marks the end of the Russia investigation. We await a disclosure of the facts,” attorney Rudy Giuliani told Fox News late Friday. “We are confident that there is no finding of collusion by the president and this underscores what the president has been saying from the beginning -- that he did nothing wrong.”

MUELLER NOT RECOMMENDING FURTHER INDICTMENTS AFTER REPORT TURNOVER

Giuliani’s statement comes after Mueller transmitted his report to Attorney General William Barr.

The conclusions are not yet known, but Barr indicated he might be able to advise Congress of the main takeaways as early as this weekend.

That alone was cause for optimism in Trump world.

“This is a grand slam for President Trump. If Barr says he can brief Congress by this weekend, that means he has nothing,” said Joe diGenova, a former U.S. attorney who has advised Trump on the probe.

Giuliani and Trump attorney Jay Sekulow also told Fox News on Friday that they are "pleased that the Office of Special Counsel has delivered its report,” noting: "Attorney General Barr will determine the appropriate next steps."

Concluding an investigation that has been tight-lipped from the start, Barr quietly sent a letter to Republican and Democratic members of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees late Friday alerting them to the probe’s completion.

"Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III has concluded his investigation of the Russian interference in the 2016 election and related matters," Barr's letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.; Ranking Member Doug Collins, R-Ga.; Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; and Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., read.

MUELLER REPORT DELIVERED

"Separately, I intend to consult with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Special Counsel Mueller to determine what other information from the report can be released to Congress and the public consistent with law, including the Special Counsel regulations, and the Department's long-standing practices and policies."

Barr also said in the letter that he "may be in a position to advise you of the Special Counsel's principal conclusions as soon as this weekend."

Despite the fact that the investigation has come to a close, after almost two years, Mueller still remains special counsel, according to Justice Department officials.

In a statement on Friday, Collins said that he looked forward to reviewing Barr's report "carefully."

"I fully expect the Justice Department to release the special counsel's report to this committee and to the public without delay and to the maximum extent permitted by law," Collins said.

Nadler weighed in on Twitter calling for transparency.

"A.G. Barr has confirmed the completion of the Special Counsel investigation. We look forward to getting the full Mueller report and related materials. Transparency and the public interest demand nothing less. The need for public faith in the rule of law must be the priority," Nadler tweeted Friday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., released a joint statement calling for the release of the report.

“It is imperative for Mr. Barr to make the full report public and provide its underlying documentation and findings to Congress," they said in a statement.

"Attorney General Barr must not give President Trump, his lawyers or his staff any 'sneak preview' of Special Counsel Mueller's findings or evidence, and the White House must not be allowed to interfere in decisions about what parts of those findings or evidence are made public."

Greece: Anarchist group claims grenade at Russian Consulate

An anarchist group has claimed responsibility for a hand grenade that caused minor damage to the Russian Consulate in Athens.

A group calling itself Revenge Plot, Mikhail Zhlobitsky Cell said the explosive was intended as "revenge" for a suicide bomb attack by a Russian teenager last year.

A post on a Greek left-wing site said the teen, Mikhail Zhlobitsky, was an anarchist who died in an attack on the Akhrangelsk office of Russia's domestic security agency that injured three people.

No one was hurt by the grenade that was thrown at the Russian Consulate on March 22. Police said at the time that cameras captured two people on a motorbike throwing a small object at the fence by a security guard's post.

NFL notebook: Giants wide receiver Shepard gets hefty extension

April 11, 2019

The New York Giants are finalizing a four-year, $41 million contract extension with wide receiver Sterling Shepard, NFL Network reported Wednesday.

The deal includes $21.3 million in guaranteed money, according to ESPN.

Shepard, a second-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2016, set career highs last season with 66 catches for 872 yards. He has started 42 of his 43 games with the Giants, catching 190 passes for 2,286 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The Giants also re-signed wide receiver Russell Shepard (no relation), who confirmed the news on social media.

–Meanwhile, the Giants hosted former New York Jets cornerback Morris Claiborne and former Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle Corey Liuget on free agent visits, ESPN reported.

A former first-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys, the 29-year-old Claiborne started 30 games over the last two seasons for the Jets, breaking up 22 passes and making three interceptions.

Liuget, 29, was released by the Chargers earlier this offseason. He has 24 career sacks since being drafted in the first round in 2011, though just three since 2015. He missed 10 games last season due to a suspension and a knee injury.

–Projected top-five NFL draft pick Nick Bosa admitted in an interview with ESPN that he has scrubbed his Twitter account clean of anything that could be considered political.

Bosa, a former Ohio State defensive end, frequently had tweeted his support for President Donald Trump, and he also criticized former San Francisco 49ers quarterback-turned-social activist Colin Kaepernick.

However, knowing he could wind up in a liberal city, such as San Francisco, where the 49ers hold the No. 2 pick, he chose to clean the slate.

–At least three more quarterbacks reportedly are visiting this week with the Washington Redskins, who hold the No. 15 pick in this month’s draft.

NFL Network said Duke’s Daniel Jones, Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins and Northwestern’s Clayton Thorson all have meetings scheduled with the Redskins, who have already hosted Missouri’s Drew Lock and Auburn’s Jarrett Stidham.

Jones will visit Wednesday night and Thursday, Thorson meets with the team Wednesday, and Haskins is due sometime this week, according to NFL Network. West Virginia’s Will Grier is also expected at Redskins Park in the coming days, according to NBC Sports Washington.

–Free agent tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins signed a contract with the New England Patriots. Terms were not announced, but multiple outlets reported it’s a one-year deal for the veteran minimum.

The team also confirmed the re-signing of kicker Stephen Gostkowski.

Meanwhile, ESPN reported the Patriots brought in former Broncos and Texans wide receiver Demaryius Thomas and former Jaguars running back T.J. Yeldon for free agent visits.

–The Jets signed former Alliance of American Football quarterback Brandon Silvers, the team announced.

Silvers, 24, started three games for the Memphis Express and passed for 777 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. In four seasons at Troy from 2014-17, Silvers passed for 10,677 yards with 71 TDs and 29 picks.

The Jets also brought former Chiefs running back Spencer Ware in for a visit and will host former Packers and Ravens running back Ty Montgomery on a visit on Thursday, ESPN reported.

–The Buffalo Bills signed former Lions and 49ers defensive end Eli Harold to a one-year deal.

Harold, 25, had a career-high four sacks along with five quarterback hits in 13 games as a reserve last season for the Lions, who acquired him from the 49ers late in training camp.

A third-round pick in 2015, Harold has nine career sacks in 61 games (25 starts).

–The Dallas Cowboys released guard Parker Ehinger and defensive tackle Aziz Shittu.

Ehinger, 26, was acquired from the Chiefs in a trade during training camp last year, but he sustained a season-ending knee injury less than a week later and missed the whole season. He started four games in 2016 and one in 2017 with Kansas City.

Shittu, 24, was on and off the Cowboys’ practice squad last season. He has not appeared in a regular-season NFL game.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Federal Reserve may lower the interest it pays on excess reserves banks leave with it by 5 basis points at its April 30-May 1 policy meeting in a bid to prevent the federal funds rate from drifting higher, Morgan Stanley analysts said on Friday.

This would mark the third such “technical” adjustment on the interest on excess reserves (IOER) following cuts last June and December.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – World number one Naomi Osaka came from behind in the final set to beat Croatian Donna Vekic 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) on Friday and move into the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix semi-finals.

Osaka comfortably won the opening set but was tested by the Croatian, who pushed her to the limit in the second and third. The Japanese made 45 unforced errors as she struggles to get to grips with swapping hard courts for clay.

Osaka was visibly frustrated and trailed 5-1 in the final set but she refused to give up and found her rhythm to break Vekic twice and prevent her from serving for the match.

In the tiebreaker, a confident Osaka upped her baseline game and had two early mini breaks before wrapping up the match in two hours and 18 minutes. An infuriated Vekic even smashed her racket after losing the match.

“I told myself I didn’t want to have any regrets here,” Osaka said. “I was stressed out when I went down 1-5… but this (comeback) was pretty good because I don’t play really well on clay.”

Earlier, world number three Petra Kvitova came back from a set down to beat Anastasija Sevastova 2-6 6-2 6-3 and move into the tournament’s semi-finals for the third time in her career.

Sevastova had a dream start, breaking Kvitova twice to take a 3-0 lead as the Czech struggled with her first serve. Kvitova also made a slew of unforced errors, with many of her returns going long.

Sevastova used the full width of the court to get the better of Kvitova, who played on the back foot for much of the first set as the Latvian gave her little time to catch her breath.

However, Kvitova recovered in the second set and she broke Sevastova’s serve when she was 3-2 up, winning 10 straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Sevastova looked shaken and was broken again to give Kvitova the second set.

Kvitova took command in the final set and broke a visibly upset Sevastova to take a 3-1 lead before easing into the semis.

“In the first set I missed almost everything. I was pretty slow and she just couldn’t miss,” Kvitova said. “In the second set it was very important for me to stay on my serve and the chance to break her came.”

Kiki Bertens plays Angelique Kerber later on Friday and Victoria Azarenka faces Anett Kontaveit in the last quarter-final.

Tiger woods celebrates after winning the 2019 Masters
FILE PHOTO: Golf – Masters – Augusta National Golf Club – Augusta, Georgia, U.S. – April 14, 2019 – Tiger Woods of the U.S. celebrates on the 18th hole after winning the 2019 Masters. REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson

April 26, 2019

Tiger Woods is sending a message that he thinks he still has enough left, emotionally and physically, to win three more major championships to tie Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 titles.

Speaking to GolfTV in his first sit-down interview since the Masters, Woods said he has taken some time off since his victory at Augusta National, which still doesn’t feel real.

“Honestly, it’s hard to believe,” Woods said. “I was texting one of my good friends last night … that I couldn’t believe that I won the tournament. That it really hasn’t sunk in. I haven’t started doing anything. I’ve just been laying there. And every now and again, I’ll look over there on the couch and there’s the jacket.”

That’s the fifth green jacket for the 43-year-old Woods, who hadn’t won a major tournament since the 2008 U.S. Open. Along the way, four back surgeries, a divorce and other personal issues derailed him.

He said he has been spending time with his children – daughter Sam, 11, and son Charlie, 10 – who weren’t born when their father was the most dominant golfer on the planet.

“They never knew golf to be a good thing in my life and only the only thing they remember is that it brought this incredible amount of pain to their dad and they don’t want to ever want to see their dad in pain,” Woods said. “And so to now have them see this side of it, the side that I’ve experienced for so many years of my life, but I had a battle to get back to this point, it feels good.”

He said he hopes – maybe expects — they’ll see this side again.

And no one will take Woods for granted at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black Course on Long Island, N.Y., which starts May 16.

Woods said he’ll be ready for a course he already conquered once in a major: the 2002 U.S. Open.

“I’m doing all the visual stuff, but I haven’t put in the physical work yet. But it’s probably coming this weekend,” he said.

Before Woods encountered health and personal problems, it was expected that topping Nicklaus’ major mark was “when” and not “if.” Then the certainty went away, but Woods thought he still had a chance.

“I always thought it was possible, if I had everything go my way. It took him an entire career to get to 18, so now that I’ve had another extension to my career – one that I didn’t think I had a couple of years ago – if I do things correctly and everything falls my way, yeah, it’s a possibility. I’m never going to say it’s not.

“Now I just need to have a lot of things go my way, and who’s to say that it will or will not happen? That’s what the future holds, I don’t know. The only thing I can promise you is this: that I will be prepared.”

Maria Butina, the Russian woman who was accused of being a secret agent for the Russian government, was sentenced to 18 months in prison Friday by a federal judge in Washington after pleading guilty last year to a conspiracy charge.

Butina, who has already served nine months behind bars, will get credit for time served and can possibly get credit for good behavior, the judge said. She will be removed from the U.S. promptly on completion of her time, the judge added, and returned to Russia.

MARIA BUTINA, ACCUSED RUSSIAN SPY, PLEADS GUILTY TO CONSPIRACY

An emotional and apologetic Butina said in court Friday she is “truly sorry” and regrets not registering as a foreign agent.

“I feel ashamed and embarrassed,” she said, adding that her “reputation is ruined.”

Butina has been jailed since her arrest in July 2018. She entered the court Friday wearing a dark green prison jumpsuit and spoke in clear English, with a slight Russian accent.

“Please accept my apologies,” Butina said.

Butina’s lawyer, Robert Driscoll, said after the sentencing they had hoped for a “better outcome,” but expressed a desire for Butina to be released to her family by the fall.

Prosecutors had claimed Butina used her contacts with the National Rifle Association and the National Prayer Breakfast to develop relationships with U.S. politicians and gather information for Russia.

Prosecutors also have said that Butina’s boyfriend, conservative political operative Paul Erickson, identified in court papers as “U.S. Person 1,” helped her establish ties with the NRA.

WHO IS MARIA BUTINA, THE RUSSIAN WOMAN ACCUSED OF SPYING ON US?

In their filings, prosecutors claim federal agents found Butina had contact information for people suspected of being employed by Russia’s Federal Security Services, or FSB, the successor intelligence agency to the KGB. Inside her home, they found notes referring to a potential job offer from the FSB, according to the documents.

Investigators recovered several emails and Twitter direct message conversations in which Butina referred to the need to keep her work secret and, in one instance, said it should be “incognito.” Prosecutors said Butina had contact with Russian intelligence officials and that the FBI photographed her dining with a diplomat suspected of being a Russian intelligence agent.
