Koepka comfortable to be in chasing pack at Masters

Third round play of the Masters at Augusta National

AUGUSTA Ga. (Reuters) – Brooks Koepka relinquished his share of the Masters lead on Saturday but the American is not about to panic given the increased self-belief that helped him bag two of the last three majors.

On a day when Augusta National, which had been softened by rain earlier in the week, was yielding low scores Koepka could only muster a three-under-par 69 that left him alone in fourth place and three shots back of leader Francesco Molinari.

“I’m pretty comfortable being in, being up there on the leaderboard in a major come Sunday,” said Koepka, whose roller-coaster round included an eagle, five birdies and four bogeys. “So I enjoy it, it’s fun, getting definitely more comfortable with it as every major goes by.

“I feel good and I like my chances tomorrow.”

Koepka, who does not have a top-10 finish in three previous starts at the Masters and missed the event in 2018 due to a wrist injury, was chugging along at one-under on the day when he stepped up to the par-five 15th and gave his Green Jacket hopes a boost.

The three-times major champion launched his drive 332 yards up the fairway and then made an eagle after his approach shot settled 10 feet from the cup.

That hole not only salvaged his round but could go a long way to determining if he is to slip into a Green Jacket after Sunday’s final round, which is starting a 7:30 a.m. ET (1130 GMT).

Due to an ominous weather forecast, golfers will go off from the first and 10th tees in threesomes and Koepka will be followed around the course by the final grouping of Molinari, Tiger Woods and Tony Finau.

Koepka has said all week he was focused on his own game and not worrying about what anyone else is doing, but that could prove tough come Sunday with the leaders playing right behind him.

“I can’t control anything that they’re doing with ‑‑ whatever they’re going to do, they’re going to do,” said Koepka. “So just need to go out there and hopefully they can see something on the board where it’ll make them a little nervous.”

Venezuelans build new life in Spain, fret for homeland

By Ana Maria Arevalo

XINZO DE LIMIA, Spain (Reuters) – Until January, Jose Martinez and his wife Arelis Morales were in the eye of Venezuela’s political storm: he worked for an opposition leader, she advised human rights groups.

But after years of opposing President Nicolas Maduro’s increasingly repressive leftist government – including 2017 protests that ended with 125 deaths – they decided to put family life first.

“The main reason for leaving was that we want to have children,” Martinez, 31, told Reuters, from the rural town of Xinzo de Limia in Spain’s Galicia region where they left to live with relatives.

“It hurts, but we have to move on. How could we expose a child to everything that goes on in Venezuela?”

The exodus of more than 3 million Venezuelans from an imploding economy, crime-ridden streets and constant political violence, is a well-known phenomenon, especially the flood of lower-income migrants around Latin America.

There has been less attention paid to middle-class professionals who, though enjoying more resources, also face agonizing dilemmas, often giving up years of training and work.

Martinez, a coordinator in the party of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, suffered depression last year. But he is recovering in Xinzo de Limia and reinventing himself as a photographer, doing documentary and wedding work.

His wife Morales, 30, wants to stay working in human rights, while seeking to have a baby. “We gave everything we could for the country until my body literally said: ‘I cannot take this anymore’,” she said, saying stress stopped her getting pregnant.

Both are encouraged by recent events in Venezuela, where congress leader Juan Guaido invoked the constitution to assume the interim presidency after declaring Maduro’s 2018 reelection illegitimate, galvanizing the opposition and earning Western recognition.

The couple hope to move back if Maduro loses power.

PROFESSIONAL DREAM

Thousands of Venezuelans have moved to Spain in recent years, many reconnecting with roots after waves of immigration in the opposite direction following the 20th century World Wars.

According to official data, Venezuelans living in Spain rose to 109,880 by mid-2018, up nearly 19,000 in the previous six months. Those figures probably do not include many dual nationality citizens who also moved, people like Mariana Elias.

Before moving to Barcelona in January, Elias spent years in Caracas doing two degrees in chemical and production engineering, helping to pay her way with work as a teacher.

She protested on the streets against Maduro, was faculty student council president at Simon Bolivar university, and felt the chaos of Caracas close up when robbed on three occasions.

Her reason for moving to Barcelona was straightforward: “My job ambitions. As I really prepared myself academically, I wanted to have the opportunity in the long-term to progress and upgrade. I wasn’t able to see that in Venezuela right now.”

Elias, 27, wants to find a job in engineering, but for now has started at a British company organizing conferences. In Spain she enjoys basic services such as public transport that her compatriots can no longer take for granted.

“In Venezuela I would never take public transport unless I had no other choice. I would pray and ask all the deities to make me invisible so I wouldn’t get robbed,” said the bubbly, bilingual Elias, adding she had no plans to return home any time soon.

She enjoys Venezuelan traditions with compatriots in Spain.

“The Venezuelans I know are all trying to work and make ends meet. But we meet up to talk about our country and to eat ‘arepas’,” she said, referring to the cornmeal flatbread staple.

“I am not able to leave Venezuela out of my mind, never.”

N. Carolina man convicted of murder in missing woman's death

A North Carolina man convicted of killing his stepdaughter and a missing woman whose body has never been found has now been convicted in another slaying.

The StarNews reports U.S. Army veteran James Opelton Bradley was found guilty Tuesday of first-degree murder in the 2013 death of Elisha Tucker. He's set to be sentenced Thursday.

Bradley served 23 years in prison in the slaying of his 8-year-old stepdaughter and was released from custody in March 2013. Tucker was reported missing that August.

Another woman, Shannon Rippy Van Newkirk, was reported missing nearly a year later in April 2014. Authorities searching for Van Newkirk's body instead found Tucker's, which had been stuffed in trash bags and buried in a field. Bradley was convicted in Van Newkirk's presumed death in 2017.

UK PM May defends Brexit delay, critic asks her to resign

Extraordinary European Union leaders summit in Brussels

April 11, 2019

By William James and Kylie MacLellan

LONDON (Reuters) – British Prime Minister Theresa May defended her decision to delay Brexit and seek a compromise exit plan with the opposition Labour Party as one angry lawmaker from her own party stood up in parliament on Thursday and asked her to resign.

The European Union has agreed to delay Brexit by up to six months to Oct. 31 while May seeks an agreement with Labour that she hopes will help get her three-times rejected exit deal approved by parliament.

“This is not the normal way of British politics … Reaching an agreement will not be easy, because to be successful it will require both sides to make compromises,” May told parliament.

May agreed the delay in the early hours of the morning at an EU summit in Brussels, ending the risk that Britain would leave the bloc without a deal on Friday but providing little new information on how she will resolve the country’s biggest political crisis in more than 70 years.

Sterling traders were left scratching their heads about whether the British currency should rise or fall.

But her statement on the decision to delay Britain’s EU exit for a second time brought angry reaction from hardliners who want to leave the EU as soon as possible.

Arch eurosceptic Bill Cash described it as “abject surrender”.

“Does she also accept that the Withdrawal Agreement undermines our democracy, the constitutional basis of Northern Ireland, our right to govern ourselves, control over our laws and undermines our national interest? Will she resign?” he said.

May retorted: “I think you know the answer to that.”

TAKE A BREAK

May said nothing was more pressing or vital than delivering Brexit, and emphasized that she wanted Britain to ratify an exit deal as quickly as possible to avoid taking part in European Parliament elections on May 23.

Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, with whom May is trying to negotiate a compromise on the shape of Britain’s long-term relationship with the EU, was critical of the need for further delay.

“This second extension in the space of a fortnight represents not only a diplomatic failure, but is another milestone in the government’s mishandling of the entire Brexit process,” he said.

Despite trading barbs, both May and Corbyn said they wanted to continue talks.

After months of late-night votes and bitter infighting, May urged lawmakers to take advantage of a break in parliamentary business until April 23rd – announced earlier in the day to cheers – and reflect upon the country’s situation.

“Let us then resolve to find a way through this impasse, so that we can leave the European Union with a deal as soon as possible,” she said.

But the eurosceptics in her party were in less reflective mood, warning May that if the result of negotiations with Labour was that they were asked to vote again on an unchanged deal, they would be ready to reject it for a fourth time.

“Perseverance is a virtue but sheer obstinacy is not,” said eurosceptic Conservative Member of Parliament Mark Francois.

As Fed readies balance sheet plan, Quarles, Harker urge caution

By Trevor Hunnicutt and Ann Saphir

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – As the Federal Reserve prepares to stop trimming its $4 trillion balance sheet later this year, two U.S. central bankers suggested the Fed may need to carefully feel its way on how big its bond portfolio needs to be to maintain smoothly operating financial markets.

In minutes of its January policy-setting meeting released earlier this week, the Fed surprised markets by saying it had discussed ending a reduction of its balance sheet later this year.

Doing so would leave the Fed’s balance sheet, swollen from years of bond-buying in the post-crisis years, much bigger than had earlier been anticipated.

On Friday, Fed policymakers said that one reason a bigger Fed balance sheet is necessary is that banks are relying on a much bigger pool of reserves held at the Fed than they did in the pre-crisis years. Because it is not clear exactly how much the banks need, the Fed should go slow to prevent the level of reserves from unintentionally falling below what was needed, they said.

“I have proposed that we can substantially slow the decline in reserves by ending the reduction in asset holdings later this year,” Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker said in remarks prepared for delivery to a monetary policy conference in New York.

“Reserves would then diminish at a very gradual pace, reflecting the trend growth of other Federal Reserve liabilities.”

Speaking on the same panel, Federal Reserve Governor Randal Quarles agreed with Harker’s go-slow approach.

“With so much uncertainty over the level and slope of the reserve demand curve, a degree of caution is warranted,” Quarles said.

St. Louis Fed President James Bullard, who also presented on the panel, gave a slightly different view, saying that shrinking the Fed’s balance sheet while interest rates are well above zero has only “minor” effects on the macroeconomy.

Roadside bomb kills 6 civilians in eastern Afghanistan

An Afghan official says at least six civilians were killed by a roadside bomb as their vehicle was traveling through the eastern province of Laghman.

Asadullah Dawlatzai, the provincial governor's spokesman, says the victims were travelling in Qarghayi district when the bomb went off Tuesday.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Taliban insurgents routinely plant explosives targeting Afghan security forces, bombs which end up killing or maiming civilians.

In a separate attack late Monday, police say a doctor was killed as he returned home from his private clinic in Kabul by an explosive device attached to his vehicle.

The Islamic State group claimed the attack in the capital.

A California man who allegedly fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight last month before fleeing the country has been returned to the U.S. following his arrest in Mexico on Wednesday, authorities said.

Julio Cesar Rocha, 25, of Montlcair, is accused of shooting his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend Thalia Flores and a second unidentified male victim March 21 around 2:45 p.m. while the two were sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of a discount store in Chino. Both communities are about 36 miles east of Los Angeles.

Flores died at the scene. The man, whose name was not released, walked to a nearby hospital where he’s recovering from his gunshot wounds.

Rocha allegedly fled the scene and remained at large for more than a month, the Daily Bulletin reported. He was formally arrested at 4:30 p.m. after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport from Mexico, KTLA-TV reported.

The suspect was booked at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on murder and attempted murder charges, the City of Chino Police Department said on Facebook.

Flores ended her seven-year relationship with Rocha just two months before her death and still lived in fear of him until that point, a sister of the victim, Bernice Flores, told the Daily Bulletin.

“He said himself so many times to other people, ‘If I can’t have her, no one will.’ ” Flores said, adding that her sister stayed in the relationship longer that she would have liked in fear that Rocha would hurt her or her family if they broke up.

Rocha was convicted on misdemeanor battery in 2016 and sentenced to 60 days in prison. He was originally charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, but the charges were lowered in a plea deal, the Daily Bulletin reported.

Rocha was convicted of misdemeanor resisting or obstructing a peace officer in 2014. A second charge of misdemeanor battery was dropped in a plea deal, and Rocha was ordered to complete a 26-week anger management course, according to San Bernardino County Superior Court records. Rocha was later arrested and sentenced to 10 days behind bars for failing to complete the course.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”
