Vladimir Putin Calls For Defending Internet Free Speech

In stark contrast to attempts in numerous western countries to stifle free speech online, Russian President Vladimir Putin defended Internet freedom during a conference earlier today.

When rulers of authoritarian regimes are more pro-freedom than western leaders, you know we’re in trouble.

Putin told the Russian Internet Governance Forum, “I am confident that we should continue to follow the principle of the freedom of the Internet, creating conditions for a wide exchange of information and the implementation of business initiatives and startups.”

The Russian leader said that it was important to balance free speech online with concerns about tackling cyber-crime and illegal content.

Putin’s position is at odds with many western leaders, who have elevated concerns about “fake news” and people’s feelings being hurt over free speech.

In addition to the widespread banning and deplatforming of numerous dissident speakers over the course of the last year, Internet regulation by the state is also intensifying in the west.

According to reports, the UK is about to impose what some are calling “the toughest Internet laws in the world” in the name of stopping cyber-bullying and the spread of “disinformation”.

The European Union also recently passed Article 13, which some fear could lead to the banning of memes.

In the not too distant future, the Russian Internet, where for example you can criticize transgenderism without the risk of being arrested (unlike in the UK), might be more free than anywhere in western Europe.

I can think of nothing more humiliating than that.

NSA Bolton Defends Change in Policy on Cuba

National Security Adviser John Bolton defended the Trump administration's change in more than two decades of American policy toward Cuba, telling MSNBC's "MTP Daily" on Wednesday that U.S. foreign policy should be "based on the pursuit of American national interests."

The State Department announced Wednesday it would permit Cuban Americans to sue the foreign power over property they lost during the 1959 Cuban Revolution. A 1996 act gave Americans this right, but every president since then has suspended the key clause due to fears of alienating U.S. allies and complicating ties with Havana.

When asked why the administration is standing on principle with Cuba but not with other authoritarian or dictatorial regimes, Bolton said "I don't have any trouble at all explaining the distinction . . . Sometimes regimes that look alike are treated differently because in the constellation of American interest, our relationship with them and the circumstances we face is different, and I don't think we need to make any apologies for that – not this administration, or not other administrations."

The European Union, which has many business interests in Cuba, condemned the State Department announcement and warned it will "consider all options at its disposal to protect its legitimate interests," including calling for World Trade Organization action.

The Trump administration has been adopting a more aggressive stance toward Cuba after former President Barack Obama had been moving toward a thawing of relations with Havana.

Survivor: Bus in fatal crash swerved like a 'roller coaster'

A survivor described a bus swerving "like a roller coaster" and tumbling "five or six times" as it overturned early Tuesday along a Virginia interstate, killing two passengers and injuring others aboard.

Bus driver Yui Man Chow of Staten Island, New York, has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the crash, Virginia State Police said in a news release.

The Tao's Travel Inc. bus traveling from Florida to New York with 57 people aboard rolled when it ran off the left side of an Interstate 95 exit ramp in Prince George County about 5:22 a.m., state police said in a statement.

Images from the crash scene showed crews working around the overturned bus in foggy conditions. It wasn't immediately clear if weather was a factor in the crash, state police spokeswoman Sgt. Keeli Hill said. But officials said fog prevented rescuers from using a helicopter to transport victims.

One person died at the scene and a second died hours later at a hospital, police said. Numerous other passengers were still being treated midday at area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Police said the 40-year-old driver wasn't injured.

Monique Berry, of Harlem in New York, described the crash for news outlets at a reunion center for survivors.

"All I know, I went to close my eyes and we were moving too fast," she said. "It swerved like a roller coaster. We tumbled five or six times. It wasn't less than that."

As the bus overturned, Berry said, she remembers thinking "that was it" and when she came to, a man grabbed her and they crawled out a window. In the chaos after the crash, people were lying in the mud and screaming, she said.

"I made it. I just want to get home," she said.

The bus departed from Orlando, Florida, and stopped in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to switch drivers, police said. It was headed to New York City when it crashed.

A representative of the Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is on scene and the National Transportation Safety Board has been notified, police said.

Online FMCSA records show that the Middleton, Massachusetts-based company with four vehicles and eight drivers logged 900,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) last year. Records show no crashes reported in the past two years but list five violations in that period, including speeding and defective or no emergency exit windows.

A man who answered the phone at Tao's Travel on Tuesday morning declined to comment.

Slain Missouri Ku Klux Klan leader’s wife admits killing him

The wife of a Missouri Ku Klux Klan leader has admitted to fatally shooting her husband.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Malissa Ancona pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree murder, tampering with evidence and abandonment of a corpse in the 2017 death of Frank Ancona Jr. She was sentenced to life in prison under a plea deal. Frank Ancona identified himself as an imperial wizard of the KKK.

Malissa Ancona initially reported her husband missing. She later claimed her son, Paul Jinkerson Jr., shot him while he was sleeping and after he had asked for a divorce. He faces the same charges as his mom.

But she said Friday that he had no role in the shooting. She said did help clean up the crime scene in a rural area of southeast Missouri and helped dump the body.

U.S., China key to GSK’s consumer venture with Pfizer

LONDON (Reuters) – The United States and China will be key focuses for the consumer healthcare venture being formed by GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer, as the companies look to build on strong existing positions in those markets.

GSK and Pfizer are on track to create the world’s biggest consumer health business – with brands from Advil painkillers to Chapstick lip balm – by the second half of 2019, Brian McNamara, CEO of GSK Consumer Healthcare, told Reuters on Thursday.

The venture, to be 68 percent owned by GSK, will become a stand-alone company within three years of closing the deal, and McNamara will lead it.

“The U.S. and China are really two of the key value drivers of the deal because it’s where Pfizer has critical mass and a significant amount of their key brands,” he said in an interview, noting the new entity will be the No.1 player in the United States and No.2 in China. “U.S. and China are must-win markets.”

The consumer health sector, which spans vitamins, non-prescription medicines and other drug store purchases, is buoyed by ageing populations, a growing interest in health, wellness and self-care, and growing middle classes. It has slowed at times in recent years, due to emerging market fluctuations or weak flu seasons.

The new, yet-to-be-named company will have annual sales of 9.8 billion pounds ($12.9 billion) and more than 7 percent of the global consumer health market, with brands also including Centrum vitamins and Sensodyne toothpaste.

That puts it ahead of rivals Johnson & Johnson, Bayer and Sanofi.

Pfizer’s Centrum is already the leading multivitamin in China, while Caltrate is the No.2 calcium supplement in what is one of the world’s most calcium-deficient populations, McNamara said.

He said vitamins, minerals and supplements (VMS) would be a major focus, alongside oral care and over-the-counter pain medicine, and respiratory treatments like cold and flu tablets.

“It gives us the presence globally but it really strengthens our China position,” he said about VMS.

GSK has said it is aiming to make divestments worth about 1 billion pounds ($1.3 billion) in 2019/2020, but McNamara declined to comment on them.

GSK in December announced plans to separate into two companies – one for prescription drugs and vaccines, the other for over-the-counter products – after agreeing the deal with the consumer health business that Pfizer tried, and failed, to sell previously.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

COLORADO ENACTS ‘RED FLAG’ LAW TO SEIZE GUNS FROM THOSE DEEMED DANGEROUS, PROMPTING BACKLASH

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
