Auschwitz Memorial shares photos of people walking on train track, urges respect

The Auschwitz Memorial on Wednesday urged tourists to be mindful of where they are while visiting the historic site after people have apparently created photo-ops along its railroad track.

The memorial – which “preserves” the location of the former Nazi concentration camp – posted their message on Twitter and stressed the gravity and the solemnness of the location.

They also condemned the use of the train track as “a balance beam.”

“When you come to @AuschwitzMuseum remember you are at the site where over 1 million people were killed. Respect their memory,” the Twitter post said. “There are better places to learn how to walk on a balance beam than the site which symbolizes deportation of hundreds of thousands to their deaths.”

Alongside the tweet, the memorial also posted a handful of photos that depicted visitors walking along the track.

February 19, 2019

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – British rock band Queen will open this weekend’s Oscars show, a representative for the band said on Tuesday, ending the mystery over how the telecast would begin without a traditional host.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Tuesday that Queen would be among the performers at the Feb. 24 ceremony in Hollywood but did not say when the band would take the stage.

A representative for Queen told Reuters on Tuesday the band “are opening the show,” but had no further details.

The Oscars ceremony is to go ahead without a host and an opening monologue for the first time in 30 years after the withdrawal last year of comedian Kevin Hart because of past homophobic tweets.

Queen and its late frontman, Freddie Mercury, are the subject of Oscar-nominated best picture “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The current lineup includes original members Brian May on lead guitar and Roger Taylor on drums, with former “American Idol” star Adam Lambert taking on lead vocals.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” has taken in more than $854 million at the global box office to become the most successful musical biopic ever.

Bill de Blasio heads to New Hampshire this weekend, fueling 2020 talk

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is headed this weekend to the state that holds the first primary in the race for the White House, fueling speculation that the two-term progressive mayor of America’s largest city is seriously considering a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

De Blasio’s political team announced late Tuesday night that the mayor and his wife, Chirlane McCray, would spend Saturday afternoon in Manchester, and on Sunday travel to Claremont, the birthplace of McCray’s mother.

DE BLASIO BLASTS REP. OMAR'S ISRAEL COMMENTS

A release from de Blasio’s team added that “more stops may be added. A full schedule for the trip will be released later this week.”

The trip to New Hampshire follows a visit last month to Iowa, the state that votes first in the presidential caucus and primary calendar. And last weekend, de Blasio and his wife traveled to South Carolina, the state that holds the first southern primary along the road to the White House.

De Blasio planned a Feb. 15 visit to the Granite State, but canceled after the fatal shooting of a New York City police officer earlier that week. But he did travel to Massachusetts to speak at a forum at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics on Feb. 14.

Last month, the mayor told New York City reporters “I’m not ruling it out” when asked about his 2020 intentions.

BIDEN STRONGLY HINTS AT 2020 RUN

DeBlasio’s predecessor at City Hall in New York, former three-term Mayor Mike Bloomberg, announced last week that he would not run for the Democratic nomination after seriously considering a bid. Bloomberg made a two-day campaign-style swing through New Hampshire in late January, as he was weighing a 2020 run.

If de Blasio runs, he would enter a crowded field of candidates.

Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York have launched bids.

Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee, former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, and former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, who served as Housing and Urban Development secretary under President Barack Obama, are also running, as are Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, former Rep. John Delaney of Maryland, and South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

THE BETO WAITING GAME - HAS O'ROURKE MISSED HIS MOMENT?

A number of other Democrats are moving toward White House bids, including former Vice President Joe Biden, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas, and Rep. Eric Swalwell of California.

The Latest: Teenager is not long-missing Timmothy Pitzen

The Latest on efforts to confirm the identity of a 14-year-old who told police he is Timmothy Pitzen, an Illinois boy who has been missing since 2011 (all times local):

4:45 p.m.

Authorities have rejected a teenager's claim that he is an Illinois boy who disappeared in 2011 at age 6.

The FBI says DNA testing ruled out the teenager as being Timmothy Pitzen, missing from Aurora, Illinois. Police say the story of the teenager found wandering streets in Newport, Kentucky, on Wednesday didn't check out.

The teenager told police that he was Timmothy and that he had escaped two kidnappers.

Authorities didn't immediately release the teenager's true identity or other information.

Timmothy Pitzen disappeared around the time his mother killed herself after leaving a note that her 6-year-old son was fine but that no one would ever find him.

Police and the boy's family say there have been other false sightings over the years.

___

2:25 p.m.

The former principal at Timmothy Pitzen's elementary school says his thoughts have been with the boy's family since a teenager told police in Kentucky he was Timmothy, who disappeared in 2011.

As authorities tried Thursday to confirm the teen's identity, Nick Baughman said he hopes the results provide the Pitzen family with "peace and closure and they would heal." The teen was found Wednesday in Newport, near Cincinnati.

Baughman now is an administrator at another Illinois school district. He was Greenman Elementary principal in Aurora, Illinois, when Amy Fry-Pitzen removed her 6-year-old son early from school.

Fry-Pitzen later was found dead at a hotel in Illinois in a suicide. She left a note that said Timmothy was with others who would love and care for him.

Baughman says "it was just one of those moments where you maintain hope and be supportive and say a lot of prayers."

___

12 p.m.

Police in the Illinois hometown of a boy missing since 2011 say they can't yet confirm that he is in fact a teenager found wandering in Kentucky.

The Aurora police department says they are assisting an FBI investigation and hope to have something more definitive later Thursday.

Authorities are trying to confirm the identity of a 14-year-old boy who told police in Newport, Kentucky, that he escaped two kidnappers in the Cincinnati area and ran across a bridge. He said his name is Timmothy Pitzen.

In 2011, Timmothy Pitzen's mother killed herself, leaving a note saying her son was fine but that no one would ever find him. Timmothy was 6 years old.

Aurora police sent two detectives to check out the teenager's story. Timmothy's grandmother and an aunt said that police were using DNA testing.

___

10:50 a.m.

The grandmother of an Illinois boy missing since 2011 says she's trying not to get her hopes up after hearing that he might be alive.

Speaking from her home in northern Illinois, Alana Anderson says "there have been so many tips and sightings and what not and you try not to panic or be overly excited."

Authorities are trying to confirm the identity of a 14-year-old boy who told police in Newport, Kentucky, that he escaped two kidnappers in the Cincinnati area and ran across a bridge. He said his name is Timmothy Pitzen.

In 2011, then-6-year-old Timmothy Pitzen's mother killed herself, leaving a note saying her son was fine but that no one would ever find him.

Anderson says her daughter was having problems with her fourth marriage and had battled depression for years.

___

8:30 a.m.

Authorities are trying to confirm the identity of a teenager who told police he is an Illinois boy missing since 2011.

A 14-year-old boy told police in Newport, Kentucky, on Wednesday that he escaped two kidnappers in the Cincinnati area and ran across a bridge. He said his name was Timmothy Pitzen.

In 2011, then-6-year-old Timmothy Pitzen's mother picked him up at school in Illinois, took him to the zoo and a water park, and later killed herself at a hotel, leaving a note saying her son was fine but that no one would ever find him.

Police from Aurora, Illinois, sent two detectives to the Cincinnati area, where the FBI and local police are investigating. The boy was taken to a hospital, but no information was released.

Army says it will preserve Algeria’s security in all circumstances

ALGIERS (Reuters) – Algeria’s army will preserve the country’s security “in all circumstances and conditions”, Deputy Defence Minister Ahmed Gaed Salah told Ennahar TV on Wednesday, amid continuing protests by Algerians demanding rapid political change.

Gaed Salah is also the armed forces chief of staff.

Ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has abandoned his bid for a fifth term in power but stopped short of stepping down, raising suspicions on the street that he is buying time.

His initiative after three weeks of mass demonstrations against his rule has not defused anger on the streets, and school teachers began a strike in several cities on Wednesday to keep up pressure on the 82-year-old head of state.

Bouteflika has also delayed elections and promised to hold a conference on Algeria’s political future.

Tens of thousands of people from all social classes have demonstrated almost daily against a political system dominated for nearly 60 years by the military and veterans of the 1954-62 independence war against France.

Bouteflika has ruled for 20 years but has rarely been seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2013.

As Twitter fans help Mike Gravel, pondering 2020 run, his controversial past causing commotion

Two days after fans eager to push the Democrats further to the left started boosting the Twitter cred of Democratic former Sen. Mike Gravel of Alaska, 88, who's weighing a 2020 White House bid, his controversial past is leaping to the fore.

Vice reported about claims that Gravel is a left-wing 9/11 truther, believing the infamous terror attacks were an inside job.

The Jewish Worker reported about claims that Gravel has attachments to conspiracy theorists who support anti-Semitism, such as appearances on a podcast by known Holocaust denier Kevin Barrett.

BIDEN, SANDERS, REMAIN ON TOP IN LATEST 2020 DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY POLL

Staffers in charge of his Twitter account told Fox News via email Thursday afternoon: “The Vice piece neglects to note that this pales in comparison to other candidates. We will be sending in a statement to them shortly. We disagree with Senator Gravel on this specific issue. Whatever you think of these views, they have never killed anyone or imprisoned anyone unjustly. That's far more than you can say for people like [former Vice President] Biden, who voted to send kids to Iraq, or Kamala Harris, who contributed to mass incarceration.”

They added: “The Jewish Worker piece has been updated. We think their analysis has been fair and they've been judicious in allowing us to respond. Senator Gravel has unequivocally denounced Mr. Barrett, as you can see in the statements we sent.”

They also added: “We aren't seeking to elect him president, and we don't expect everyone to agree with everything he has thought or has done in 88 years of life. We want to get him on the debate stage so he can issue a critique of American imperialism and push the field to the left.”

Gravel has not run for president since 2008, and he hasn’t been a senator since 1981.

An exploratory committee already has been formed — a statement of organization was filed to the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday.

BERLIN (Reuters) – Wulf Matthias will not stand for a second term as Wirecard’s chairman in 2020, German daily Handelsblatt said on Friday, citing sources in the financial industry.

For age reasons alone this would not be an option for Matthias, aged 75, Handelsblatt added.

Matthias will keep his mandate until it ends in 2020, the paper quoted a company spokeswoman as saying.

Wirecard was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.

ZURICH (Reuters) – Shareholders approved Credit Suisse’s 2018 compensation report with an 82 percent majority on Friday, overriding frustrations expressed at its annual general meeting over jumps in executive pay during a year its share price plummeted.

Three shareholder advisers had recommended investors vote against Switzerland’s second-biggest bank’s remuneration report, while a fourth backed the report but expressed reservations about whether management pay matched performance.

The approval marked a slight increase over the 80.8 percent support garnered for the bank’s 2017 compensation report.

LONDON (Reuters) – Activist investor Edward Bramson is likely to fail in his attempt to get a board seat at Barclays’ annual meeting next week, even though shareholders are dissatisfied with performance of the group’s investment bank.

New York-based Bramson’s Sherborne Investors and the board of the British bank have been sparring for months over Barclays’ strategy.

Bramson wants to scale back Barclays’ investment bank to reduce risk and boost shareholder returns. Barclays Chief Executive Jes Staley remains staunchly committed to growing the business out of trouble.

After failing to persuade Staley to change course since he began building a 5.5 percent stake in the bank in March last year, Bramson hopes a board seat will rachet up the pressure.

Both sides have written to shareholders pitching their case and Bramson has courted investors in one-on-one meetings, although none have publicly backed him yet.

Interviews by Reuters with five institutional investors in Barclays suggest Bramson has failed to persuade them.

Sherborne declined to comment.

Mirza Baig, head of investment stewardship at top-40 shareholder Aviva Investors, said Bramson was welcome on the bank’s register but the boardroom was a step too far.

“He has created a lot of value at other businesses, but, generally, when he has come in as executive chair and taken full control. This would be a different case where he would just be one lone voice on the board,” he said.

A second Barclays shareholder said he backed Bramson’s goal of improving returns but via an “evolutionary” approach.

“If you look at banks that have tried to restructure their operations in investment banking – you look at Natwest Markets, Deutsche Bank – I struggle to think of an example where a roughshod restructuring has been accretive to shareholder value.”

A third, top-30 investor said he had been impressed by incoming Chairman Nigel Higgins’ grasp of the challenge in hand, and felt investors would give him time.

“Management know they have to execute and deliver improved returns… [Higgins] will continue to re-shape the board but obviously he didn’t feel that having someone with a diametrically opposed view on it would be helpful.”

A fourth, top-30 investor agreed: “We voted for the chairman to come in and it would be crazy to allow an activist to join the board (at this time).”

Jupiter Fund Management, the 24th largest investor, said it also planned to vote against Bramson.

Barclays has nearly 500 institutional shareholders, Refinitiv data showed.

Since Staley joined Barclays in 2015, the investment bank returns relative to capital invested have increased but are still underperforming the overall business.

Barclays’ first-quarter figures showed the investment bank posted a 6 percent drop in income from its markets business and a 17 percent fall in banking advisory fees.

Returns in the investment bank fell to 9.5 percent from 13.2 percent a year ago.

Famed for successful campaigns against smaller British companies in sectors from chemicals to advertising, Bramson’s board seat pitch has been rebuffed by shareholder advisory firms.

Institutional Shareholder Services, the world’s biggest, said Bramson’s proposal “falls short of what can reasonably be expected from a shareholder trying to address issues at a 28 billion pounds, systemically important bank”.

Glass Lewis also flagged concern about Bramson’s lack of banking experience and “questionable” shareholding structure, referring to Sherborne’s use of derivative contracts to hedge losses should its strategy fail.

Critics said the arrangement meant his interests are not truly aligned with those of other long-term shareholders.

British advisory firm Pirc, however, said it recommended that investors abstain in the vote on Bramson’s proposal as a challenge to the board to do better in the year ahead – or face a similar contest in 2020.

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.
