Sen. Amy Klobuchar is a 'no' on free college tuition

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn, has separated herself again from the large field of progressive 2020 candidates by not endorsing free college tuition.

At a televised town hall in Manchester, N.H, a recent college graduate asked the senator about her thoughts on the student debt crisis.

"Would you be willing to stand with my generation and end the student debt crisis by free college for all and would you include undocumented and formerly-incarcerated people in that program?" he asked, adding that he wanted a “clear yes or no” answer.

WARREN TO ANNOUNCE UNIVERSAL CHILD CARE

Klobuchar said she wants to “make it easier to refinance” and extend Pell Grants to include more students. She also called on two-year community college to be free. She said she'd like to focus on kids that don't graduate high school.

CNN anchor Don Lemon pressed Klobuchar to answer yes or no.

“No, I am not for free college for all,” Klobuchar answered. “I wish if I was a magic genie and could give that to everyone and we could afford it, I would.  I’m just trying to find a mix of incentives and make sure kids are in need- and that’s why I talked about expanding Pell Grants, can go to college and be able to afford it and make sure that people who can’t afford it are able to pay.”

This isn’t the first time Klobuchar has distanced herself from her liberal peers. She is one of very few Democrats who hasn’t endorsed the Green New Deal, calling the resolution an “aspiration” but that the goals are “very difficult” to meet in such a short period of time.

March 27, 2019

(Reuters) – Southwest Airlines Co said on Wednesday the recent groundings of Boeing 737 MAX planes would lead to its first-quarter revenue per available seat mile coming in below its previous forecast.

The U.S. airline is the first carrier to provide a formal change to its financial forecasts since the recent crash of Boeing’s new jet.

The airline said it now expects operating revenue per available seat mile, a closely followed measure of airline performance, to rise about 2 percent to 3 percent, compared with the 3 percent to 4 percent growth it forecast earlier.

Kim Jong Un arrives in Vietnam for 2nd nuclear summit with Trump

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived by armored train at Vietnam's Dong Dang railway station on the China-Vietnam border on Tuesday for his second nuclear summit with President Trump.

Press reports speculate that Kim will be driven to Hanoi ahead of his Wednesday meeting with Trump. Officials shared no details about the specifics of a summit that the world will be watching closely.

Trump was flying to Hanoi from Washington.

Kim’s arrival, after a long ride that started in Pyongyang and wound through China, comes as Vietnamese officials scramble to finish preparations for a rushed summit that’s meant to deal with one of Asia’s biggest security challenges: North Korea’s pursuit of a nuclear program that stands on the verge of viably threatening any target on the planet.

TRUMP, KIM’S VIETNAM SUMMIT JOINS LONG LIST OF KEY MOMENTS BETWEEN WORLD LEADERS: A TIMELINE

Although many experts are skeptical Kim will give up the nukes, there was a palpable, carnival-like excitement among many in Hanoi as the final preparations were made.

Officials in Hanoi said they only had about 10 days to prepare for the summit — much less than the nearly two months Singapore had before the first Trump-Kim meeting last year— but still vowed to provide airtight security for the two leaders.

“Security will be at the maximum level,” Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung told reporters.

The ultra-tight security will be appreciated by North Korean authorities, who are extremely vigilant about the safety of Kim, the third member of his family to rule the North with absolute power. Kim’s decision to take a train, not a plane, may have been influenced by the better ability to control security.

Vietnam is eager to show off its huge economic and development improvements since the destruction of the Vietnam War, but the country also tolerates no dissent and is able to provide the kind of firm hand not allowed by more democratic potential hosts.

Vietnam has announced an unprecedented traffic ban along a possible arrival route for Kim. The Communist Party’s Nhan Dan newspaper quoted the Roads Department as saying the ban will affect the 105-mile stretch of Highway One from Dong Dang, on the border with China, to Hanoi.

There are high expectations for the Hanoi summit after a vague declaration at the first meeting in June in Singapore that disappointed many.

KIM JONG UN’S TRAIN TRAVEL TO VIETNAM HIDDEN BY CHINESE CENSORS

In a meeting with senior aides in Seoul, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said that the Trump-Kim talks would be a critical opportunity to achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Moon, who met Kim three times last year and has lobbied hard to revive nuclear diplomacy between the U.S. and North Korea, is eager for a breakthrough that would allow him to push ambitious plans for inter-Korean engagement, including lucrative joint economic projects that are held back by U.S.-led sanctions against the North.

“If President Trump succeeds in dissolving the world’s last remaining Cold War rivalry, it will become yet another great feat that will be indelibly recorded in world history,” Moon said.

Trump, via Twitter, has worked to temper those expectations, predicting before leaving for Hanoi a “continuation of the progress” made in Singapore but adding a tantalizing nod to “Denuclearization?” He also said that Kim knows that “without nuclear weapons, his country could fast become one of the great economic powers anywhere in the World.”

North Korea has spent decades, at great political and economic sacrifice, building its nuclear program, and there is widespread skepticism among experts that it will give away that program cheaply.

Rwanda court says defaming the president remains a crime

Rwanda's Supreme Court has upheld a law that says defaming the president is illegal, but it says drawing cartoons or producing writing that "humiliates" a government official is no longer a crime.

The Rwanda Journalists Association had challenged parts of the penal code that criminalized the publishing of such cartoons with punishment of up to four years in prison.

A three-judge panel decided the provisions contravene freedom of expression.

The association's executive secretary, Gonza Muganwa, welcomed the ruling, telling The Associated Press it removes a major obstacle to press freedom in the East African nation.

Defaming the president remains illegal, with a punishment of five to seven years in prison and a fine.

Pennsylvania man who lied about military service, lies about addiction program — and judge drops the hammer

A Pennsylvania man already facing prison time -- and already in hot water for lying about his military service and his mom's death -- is going to be spending even more time behind bars after a judge caught him telling another tall tale.

Joseph Gorzoch, 41, of Bensalem was found to have lied when he told authorities he completed a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program while at the Bucks County Jail. In this instance, Gorzoch was undone by math: officials realized he couldn't have completed the 90-day program if he was only incarcerated for 67 days.

Deputy District Attorney Bob James checked on previous statements Gorzoch made to a judge about completing the program, which would have helped him receive a lesser sentence in cases involving two separate DUI charges and a theft incident.

"He technically turned what could have been a 1-to-2-year sentence into a 5-to-10-year sentence by lying to everybody," James told KYW News Radio.

TEXAS MAN BRANDISHED BB GUN, HIT MAN AND 10-YEAR-OLD GIRL WITH HAMMER, POLICE SAY

Gorzoch had previously shown an aversion to the truth when he claimed to have been injured while serving in Afghanistan as a U.S. Navy sergeant as part of a bid to receive a lighter sentence for a pair of DUI charges.

James, who is a U.S. Air Force veteran, said he knew something was wrong with the story since the Navy doesn't have the rank of sergeant.

He told the Bucks County Courier-Times that the false claim was dishonoring those who actually served and noted Gorzoch has also lied about his mother's death in order to have another court case delayed.

SUSPECT IN NJ NANNY'S MURDER IS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT FROM HONDURAS, AUTHORITIES SAY

In March, the 41-year-old was sentenced to four to eight years in state prison and two years of probation after he claimed to have completed the 90-day addiction program, FOX29 reported. But after the truth emerged, James filed a motion of reconsideration, and a judge decided to add one to two years to Gorzoch's sentence in light of the most recent lie -- extending his sentence in state prison to 5-to-10 years.

BERLIN (Reuters) – Wulf Matthias will not stand for a second term as Wirecard’s chairman in 2020, German daily Handelsblatt said on Friday, citing sources in the financial industry.

For age reasons alone this would not be an option for Matthias, aged 75, Handelsblatt added.

Matthias will keep his mandate until it ends in 2020, the paper quoted a company spokeswoman as saying.

Wirecard was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.

ZURICH (Reuters) – Shareholders approved Credit Suisse’s 2018 compensation report with an 82 percent majority on Friday, overriding frustrations expressed at its annual general meeting over jumps in executive pay during a year its share price plummeted.

Three shareholder advisers had recommended investors vote against Switzerland’s second-biggest bank’s remuneration report, while a fourth backed the report but expressed reservations about whether management pay matched performance.

The approval marked a slight increase over the 80.8 percent support garnered for the bank’s 2017 compensation report.

LONDON (Reuters) – Activist investor Edward Bramson is likely to fail in his attempt to get a board seat at Barclays’ annual meeting next week, even though shareholders are dissatisfied with performance of the group’s investment bank.

New York-based Bramson’s Sherborne Investors and the board of the British bank have been sparring for months over Barclays’ strategy.

Bramson wants to scale back Barclays’ investment bank to reduce risk and boost shareholder returns. Barclays Chief Executive Jes Staley remains staunchly committed to growing the business out of trouble.

After failing to persuade Staley to change course since he began building a 5.5 percent stake in the bank in March last year, Bramson hopes a board seat will rachet up the pressure.

Both sides have written to shareholders pitching their case and Bramson has courted investors in one-on-one meetings, although none have publicly backed him yet.

Interviews by Reuters with five institutional investors in Barclays suggest Bramson has failed to persuade them.

Sherborne declined to comment.

Mirza Baig, head of investment stewardship at top-40 shareholder Aviva Investors, said Bramson was welcome on the bank’s register but the boardroom was a step too far.

“He has created a lot of value at other businesses, but, generally, when he has come in as executive chair and taken full control. This would be a different case where he would just be one lone voice on the board,” he said.

A second Barclays shareholder said he backed Bramson’s goal of improving returns but via an “evolutionary” approach.

“If you look at banks that have tried to restructure their operations in investment banking – you look at Natwest Markets, Deutsche Bank – I struggle to think of an example where a roughshod restructuring has been accretive to shareholder value.”

A third, top-30 investor said he had been impressed by incoming Chairman Nigel Higgins’ grasp of the challenge in hand, and felt investors would give him time.

“Management know they have to execute and deliver improved returns… [Higgins] will continue to re-shape the board but obviously he didn’t feel that having someone with a diametrically opposed view on it would be helpful.”

A fourth, top-30 investor agreed: “We voted for the chairman to come in and it would be crazy to allow an activist to join the board (at this time).”

Jupiter Fund Management, the 24th largest investor, said it also planned to vote against Bramson.

Barclays has nearly 500 institutional shareholders, Refinitiv data showed.

Since Staley joined Barclays in 2015, the investment bank returns relative to capital invested have increased but are still underperforming the overall business.

Barclays’ first-quarter figures showed the investment bank posted a 6 percent drop in income from its markets business and a 17 percent fall in banking advisory fees.

Returns in the investment bank fell to 9.5 percent from 13.2 percent a year ago.

Famed for successful campaigns against smaller British companies in sectors from chemicals to advertising, Bramson’s board seat pitch has been rebuffed by shareholder advisory firms.

Institutional Shareholder Services, the world’s biggest, said Bramson’s proposal “falls short of what can reasonably be expected from a shareholder trying to address issues at a 28 billion pounds, systemically important bank”.

Glass Lewis also flagged concern about Bramson’s lack of banking experience and “questionable” shareholding structure, referring to Sherborne’s use of derivative contracts to hedge losses should its strategy fail.

Critics said the arrangement meant his interests are not truly aligned with those of other long-term shareholders.

British advisory firm Pirc, however, said it recommended that investors abstain in the vote on Bramson’s proposal as a challenge to the board to do better in the year ahead – or face a similar contest in 2020.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.
