UN says expert arrested in Tunisia has diplomatic immunity

The United Nations says a member of the U.N. panel of experts monitoring sanctions against Libya has been arrested in Tunisia despite having diplomatic immunity.

U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said Mocef Kartas, who reportedly has dual German-Tunisian citizenship, was arrested following his arrival in Tunis on March 26.

Haq told reporters Friday that the U.N. has asked Tunisian authorities about the reasons for his arrest and the conditions under which he is being held.

He said the U.N. also informed authorities that "experts on mission for the United Nations, as Mr. Kartas is, are covered by the convention on the privileges and immunities of the United Nations."

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will be attending the Arab League summit in Tunis this weekend.

Dem Media Won’t Admit What Obama Team Did to Trump

TUCKER CARLSON, FOX NEWS: What happens when you can no longer denounce your political opponents as Russian spies? You call them “white nationalists” instead. It’s every bit as stupid and slanderous, and even more effective in shutting them up. But what does it do the country when you whip up hatred and fear like that? We’ll tell you, just ahead.

But first tonight, attorney general William Barr has finally confirmed what has been obvious for months: The Obama administration spied on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Nothing like this has happened in modern American history. Barr dropped the news almost in passing, during testimony before Congress this morning:

BARR: I think spying on a political campaign is a big deal, a big deal.

SHAHEEN: So you are not suggesting though that spying occurred?

BARR: Well, I guess -- I think spying did occur. Yes, I think spying did occur. ... I am not suggesting that it wasn’t adequately predicated but I need to explore that.

There’s no disputing Barr’s first point: Spying on a presidential campaign is a big deal, especially when it was authorized by a rival administration. Imagine if, a year from now, the Trump administration allowed the FBI to surveil officials in the Kamala Harris for president campaign. Imagine if, when caught, Trump pointed to opposition research generated by the RNC as justification for that surveillance. How would the media react to that? Like it was a major, jaw-dropping scandal. And this show would heartily agree. We wouldn’t defend it. Law enforcement should never be used as a partisan political tool, no matter who it benefits.

But the media doesn’t feel that way about Obama’s spying. They refuse to admit it was even spying. Professional dumb person, Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post, attacked the attorney general for daring to bring up the topic at all. She called Barr “Trump’s toad.” CNN, meanwhile, assured it’s viewers that there is “little evidence” that spying occurred. But that’s a lie. There is plenty of evidence. We’ve had it for months. In 2016 and 2017, the FBI wiretapped Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman. Former Trump aide Carter Page was spied on extensively, even though it was obvious from day one that he wasn’t a Russian spy. Last year, we learned that the FBI used an informant to feed them information from inside the Trump campaign. This is all spying. There’s no other word for it. When Trump complained about it, Democrats and their employees in the media called him a liar:

ADAM SCHIFF: there is no evidence to support any allegation that the FBI or any intelligence agency placed a spy in the trump campaign

DON LEMON: His baseless claims of spies.

JEFFREY TOOBIN: The so-called spy issue, first of all, there's absolutely no evidence there was a spy. So, it's really a fake issue.

DAVID CORN: This phony baloney story about a spy in the campaign. (edit) To call them a conspiracy theory is to give them too much credit. Just fake facts.

ERIN BURNETT: All the other people who've seen the intelligence in your own party are saying there's just no there-there. I'm wondering what it will take for you, Congressman Zeldin, to say he's full of it.

He lied. He’s crazy. It’s a “conspiracy theory.” As it turns out, there was in fact a conspiracy to hide the truth. But Trump wasn’t leading it. Jim Clapper was:

JOY BEHAR: Was the FBI spying on Trump's campaign?

JAMES CLAPPER: No, they were not. They were spying on, a term I don't particularly like, but on what the Russians were doing, trying to understand were the Russians infiltrating, trying to gain access, trying to gain leverage and influence. It's what they do.

JOY BEHAR: So, why doesn't he like that? He should be happy about that?

CLAPPER: He should be.

Got that? The Obama administration wasn’t spying. They were just watching him without his knowledge. On behalf of the opposing party. In the closing months of a bitter presidential campaign. No big deal. Trump ought to be grateful for it. The Obama people cared enough to surveil his staff. They’re patriotic that way. Big hearted people.

Come on. There’s got to be a limit to how much lying a country can take from its leaders. We’re definitely reached ours. Russian collusion didn’t happen. Domestic spying did. We have a right to know who participated in it, who authorized it and what their motives were. We have have a right to know that immediately, right now, without redactions. This country doesn’t belong to retired Obama staffers, intel agency heads and mindless CNN contributors. It’s a democracy. We ought to act like it.

Maryland dodges 11th-seeded Belmont to advance

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-First Round-Maryland vs Belmont

March 21, 2019

Jalen Smith and Bruno Fernando had double-doubles as sixth-seeded Maryland edged 11th-seeded Belmont 79-77 on Thursday in an NCAA Tournament East Regional first-round game in Jacksonville, Fla.

Smith had 19 points and 12 rebounds and Fernando added 14 points and 13 rebounds. Darryl Morsell scored 18 and Eric Ayala added 12 as the Terrapins prevailed in a back-and-forth game.

They bounced back after losing three of their previous four games, including a 69-61 setback against No. 13 seed Nebraska in the Terps’ first game in the Big Ten Tournament on March 14.

In a second-round game Saturday, Maryland (23-10) will face third-seeded LSU, which defeated No. 14 seed Yale 79-74 earlier Thursday.

Dylan Windler had 35 points and 11 rebounds and Kevin McClain scored 19 to lead Belmont (27-6), which defeated Temple 81-70 in a play-in game Tuesday in Dayton, Ohio. The Bruins fell 10 points short of their scoring average of 87.4, which is second to only Gonzaga in Division I.

Belmont led by six points at halftime, but Fernando had seven points and an assist during a 14-0 run by Maryland to start the second half.

Windler ended the Bruins’ drought with five straight points, and the lead changed hands five times. The fifth change came when McClain’s three-point play started a 10-2 run by the Bruins, giving them a 67-60 lead.

The Terps closed within one point twice before tying the score at 71 on Anthony Cowan Jr.’s 3-pointer with 4:07 left.

Morsell’s three-point play completed a 14-4 run that gave Maryland a 74-71 lead with 2:47 left.

Belmont twice got within a point and had a chance to take the lead in the final moments, but Morsell made a steal with four seconds left and added a free throw.

Maryland’s only lead of the first half was 9-8 before McClain’s jumper broke a tie and started a 15-3 run that gave the Bruins a 26-14 edge.

Belmont maintained a 12-point edge until the Terps went on a 9-0 run, pulling within 35-32 on Morsell’s layup.

The Bruins increased the lead to 40-34 at halftime.

Virginia Tech guard Outlaw charged with misdemeanor

March 27, 2019

A charge of possession of marijuana against Virginia Tech senior guard Ty Outlaw came to light Wednesday, two days before the Hokies take on No. 1-seed Duke in the NCAA Tournament.

Multiple outlets reported the misdemeanor charge, which, according to Montgomery County District Court records, was dated March 21 when Outlaw was with the Virginia Tech team in San Jose, Calif., for the opening two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

The charge reportedly stemmed from a police visit to Outlaw’s apartment on March 20.

Outlaw scored seven points with seven rebounds in Friday’s victory over Saint Louis in the opening round, then scored 10 points with 11 rebounds in a second-round game Sunday against Liberty to secure fourth-seeded Virginia Tech’s trip to the Sweet 16.

As of Wednesday evening, the Virginia Tech athletic department had not publicly commented on the charge. Outlaw’s status for Friday’s game against the Blue Devils remained unknown. Virginia Tech is in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1967.

He has scored 8.7 points and grabbed 5.4 rebounds per game this season, having made 45.6 percent of his 3-point attempts (78 of 171).

Outlaw spent time at UNC Greensboro and Lee College, a community college in Texas, before arriving at Virginia Tech. He redshirted a season with the Hokies while dealing with a heart condition before returning to the court last season. Earlier this month, the ACC honored Outlaw with the Bob Bradley Spirit and Courage Award.

5 suspects at New Mexico compound face terror charges

Five former residents of a New Mexico compound where authorities found the remains of a 3-year-old boy are due in federal court on terrorism-related charges.

The charges include conspiring to attack law enforcement and military members.

The two men and three women living at the compound raided in August are being arraigned Thursday on new federal charges of supporting plans for violent attacks. The charges were included in a superseding indictment last week. The group has been in federal custody since August on firearms charges.

Four members of the group also are charged in the kidnapping of the boy who died at the compound. He had suffered from medical disabilities that authorities say went untreated.

Defense attorneys say the five will plead not guilty to charges.

Indonesia central bank seen holding key rate, as hopes for easing emerge: Reuters poll

February 19, 2019

JAKARTA (Reuters) – Indonesia’s central bank will keep interest rates on hold on Thursday, a Reuters poll showed, as the Federal Reserve’s caution over further rate hikes has spurred some hopes Jakarta’s next move can be a cut.

All 25 analysts in the poll see Bank Indonesia (BI) keeping its 7-day reverse repurchase rate at 6.00 percent, where it has been since November.

BI was among the most aggressive central banks in Asia last year, hiking rates six times by a total of 175 basis points (bps) to defend the then-falling rupiah.

The rupiah was under pressure for much of 2018 due to capital outflows stemming from the Fed’s rate increases, the U.S.-China trade war and Indonesia’s large current account deficit.

But this year, after the Fed changed its tone, the rupiah has become one of the biggest gainers in emerging Asia.

“A more dovish Fed further reinforces our view since November that BI’s hiking cycle is over,” Nomura said in a Feb. 15 report, predicting BI would start cutting rates this or next year and eventually bring down borrowing costs by 100 bps.

Market talk about monetary easing to bolster economic growth have been increasing, especially after India cut rates this month and Indonesian inflation is seen staying in BI’s comfort range throughout 2019.

FOLLOW INDIA’S MOVE?

Indonesia’s president, like India’s leader, face an election soon and a rate cut could help eventually lift growth that has been stuck around 5 percent in recent years.

But BI Governor Perry Warjiyo, when asked about India’s cut, said the two economies face different issues and repeated an earlier comment that the current level of Indonesia’s key rate is near its peak.

Fakhrul Fulvian, an economist with Trimegah Sekuritas, said a rate cut now would be “inconsistent” with BI’s pledge to reduce the current account gap, which was nearly 3 percent of GDP, the widest in four years in 2018. BI officials have said it will narrow to 2.5 percent this year.

Citigroup economist Helmi Arman said BI likely will need stronger signs the Fed is done raising U.S. rates before cutting its benchmark. He expects 50 bps of cuts in the fourth quarter.

Capital Economics forecasts more tightening, rather than easing, due to global economic problems that put the rupiah under renewed pressure. The consultancy predicts BI will make two 25 bp hikes this year.

“Our baseline remains BI staying on hold through the year, but the risk is tilted towards a cut,” said Nagutha Mohamed Faiz of Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

MONTREAL/OTTAWA (Reuters) – Rising waters were prompting further evacuations in central Canada on Thursday, with the mayor of the country’s capital, Ottawa, declaring a state of emergency and Quebec authorities warning that a hydroelectric dam was at risk of breaking.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson declared the emergency in response to rising water levels along the Ottawa River and weather forecasts that called for significant rainfall on Friday.

In a statement on Twitter, Watson asked for help from the Ontario provincial government and the country’s military.

He warned that “flood levels are currently forecasted to exceed the levels that caused significant damage to numerous properties in the city of Ottawa in 2017.”

Spring flooding had killed one person and forced more than 900 people from their homes in Canada’s Quebec province as of 1 p.m. on Thursday, according to a government website.

Ottawa has received 80 requests for service related to potential flooding such as sandbagging, a city spokeswoman said.

The prospect of more rain over the next 24 to 48 hours triggered concerns on Thursday that the hydroelectric dam at Bell Falls in the western part of Quebec could be at risk of failing because of rising water levels.

Quebec’s provincial police said 250 people were protectively removed from homes in the area as of late afternoon in case the dam on the Rouge River breaks.

The dam is now at its full flow capacity of 980 cubic meters per second of water, said Francis Labbé, a spokesman for the province’s state-owned utility, Hydro Quebec. He said Hydro Quebec expected the flow could rise to 1,200 cubic meters per second of water over the next two days.

“We have to take the worst-case scenario into consideration, since we`re already at the maximum capacity,” Labbé said by phone.

The dam is part of a power station that no longer produces electricity, but is regularly inspected by Hydro Quebec, he said.

BELFAST (Reuters) – Detectives investigating the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Northern Ireland last week suspect the gunman who shot her dead is in his late teens as they made a further appeal to the local community who they believe know his identity.

McKee’s killing by an Irish nationalist militant during a riot in Londonderry has sparked outrage in the province where a 1998 peace deal mostly ended three decades of sectarian violence that cost the lives of some 3,600 people.

The New IRA, one of a small number of groups that oppose the peace accord, has said one of its members shot the 29-year-old reporter dead in the Creggan area of the city on Thursday when opening fire on police during a riot McKee was watching.

The killing, which followed a large car bomb in Londonderry in January that police also blamed on the New IRA, has raised fears that small marginalized militant groups are exploiting a political vacuum in the province and tensions caused by Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

Police released footage on Friday of immediately before and after the shooting showing three men who were involved in the rioting and identified one as the gunman who they believe is in his late teens.

“I believe that the information that can help us to bring those responsible for her murder to justice lies within the community. I need the public to tell me who he is,” Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy told reporters.

Murphy said those involved in the disorder on the night were teenagers or in their early 20s, and that about 100 people were on the ground watching the trouble as it unfolded.

He added that police believed the gun used in the attack was of a similar caliber to those used before in paramilitary type attacks in Creggan.

“I recognize that people living in Creagan may find it’s difficult to come forward to speak to police. Today, I want to provide a personal reassurance that we are able to deal with those issues sensitively,” Murphy said, echoing similar appeals in recent days.

(Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures were flat on Friday, as investors paused ahead of GDP data, which is expected to show the world’s largest economy maintained a moderate pace of growth in the first quarter.

Gross domestic product probably increased at a 2% annualized rate in the quarter as a burst in exports, strong inventory stockpiling and government investment in public construction projects offset a slowdown in consumer and business spending, according to a Reuters survey of economists.

The Commerce Department report will be published at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The GDP data comes as investors look for fresh catalysts to push the markets higher. The S&P 500 index is about 0.5% below its record high hit in late September, after surging nearly 17% this year.

First-quarter earnings have been largely upbeat, with nearly 78% of the 178 companies that have reported so far surpassing earnings estimates, according to Refinitiv data.

Wall Street now expects S&P 500 earnings to be in line with the year-ago quarter, a sharp improvement from the 2.3% fall expected at the start of April.

Amazon.com Inc rose 0.9% in premarket trading after the e-commerce giant reported quarterly profit that doubled and beat estimates on soaring demand for its cloud and ad services.

Ford Motor Co shares surged 8.5% after the automaker posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings largely due to strong pickup truck sales in its core U.S. market.

Mattel Inc jumped 8% after the toymaker beat analysts’ estimates for quarterly revenue, as a more diverse range of Barbie dolls powered sales in the United States.

At 6:52 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 35 points, or 0.13%. S&P 500 e-minis were down 1.5 points, or 0.05% and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 10.75 points, or 0.14%.

Among decliners, Intel Corp slumped 7.7% after it cut its full-year revenue forecast and missed quarterly sales estimate for its key data center business.

Rival Advanced Micro Devices declined 0.8%.

Oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp are expected to report results later in the day.

WARSAW (Reuters) – Germany could owe Poland more than $850 billion in reparations for damages it incurred during World War Two and the brutal Nazi occupation, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Germany, one of Poland’s biggest trade partners and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO, says all financial claims linked to World War Two have been settled.

The right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) has revived calls for compensation since it took power in 2015 and has made the promotion of Poland’s wartime victimhood a central plank of its appeal to nationalism.

PiS has yet to make an official demand for reparations but its combative stance towards Germany has strained relations.

“Poland lost not only millions of its citizens but it was also destroyed in an unusually brutal way,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who heads the Polish parliamentary committee on reparations, told Reuters in an interview.

“Many (victims) are still alive and feel deeply wronged.”

His comments come a month before European Parliament elections in which populist and nationalist parties are expected to do well. Poland will also hold national elections later this year, with PiS still well ahead of its rivals in opinion polls.

EU LARGESSE

Mularczyk said the reparations figure could amount to more than 10 times the estimated 100 billion euros ($111 billion) that Poland has received so far in European Union funds since it joined the bloc in 2004.

Germany is the biggest net donor to the EU budget and some Germans regard its contributions as generous compensation to recipient countries like Poland which suffered under Nazi rule.

In 1953 Poland’s then-communist rulers relinquished all claims to war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to free East Germany, also a Soviet satellite, from any liabilities. PiS says that agreement is invalid because Poland was unable to negotiate fair compensation.

Mularczyk said his committee hoped to complete its report on the reparations issue by Sept. 1, the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s invasion.

Accusing Berlin of playing “diplomatic games” over the issue, he said: “The matter is being swept under the rug (by Germany) … until it’ll be wiped from the memory, from people’s awareness.”

His comments come after the Greek parliament voted this month to seek billions of euros in German reparations for the Nazi occupation of their country.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States did not pay any money to North Korea as it sought the release of comatose American student Otto Warmbier.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump had approved payment of a $2 million bill from North Korea to cover its care of the college student, who died shortly after he was returned to the United States after 17 months in a North Korean prison.
