BERLIN (Reuters) – Berlin and Paris are in talks on common defense exports licensing procedures, a German government spokesman said on Monday.

German magazine Der Spiegel on Friday reported that Germany and France had signed a defense agreement in January which aims for regulation of arms exports to third countries.

“It’s true that Germany and France are in talks on the question of arms exports,” government spokesman Steffen Seibert told journalists during a regular news conference.

He said Berlin and Paris were in talks to reach a formal agreement on the issue.

Lawyers Release Video of Media Ripping Nick Sandmann

Lawyers for 16-year-old high school student Nick Sandmann released a video titled "Nick Sandmann vs Media Giants" that paints a poor picture of certain members of the media as they blamed him for an incident that took place after January's March For Life.

The video, which is just over two minutes in length, calls out CNN, The Washington Post, and HBO host Bill Maher for falsely claiming Sandmann instigated a showdown between himself and a Native American activist at the Lincoln Memorial. Videos from that day showed a group of Black Hebrew Israelites was taunting Sandmann and his classmates.

Many of the schoolboys were wearing "Make America Great Again" hats, a point that many of Sandmann's critics pointed out in the days following the incident.

The new video claims the Post and CNN "recklessly spread lies about a minor to advance their own financial and political agendas. Despite raw video debunking the false narrative, the Post and CNN doubled down on their reckless lies . . . Lies that will forever haunt and endanger the life of an innocent young man."

The narrator added, "How long will we allow these media giants to tear the fabric of our lives to further their own agenda? Will they ever be held accountable?

"Yes, they will."

Sandmann's lawyers filed a $250 million lawsuit against the Post last month, which they followed with a $275 million lawsuit against CNN this week. Both lawsuits allege the media companies falsely vilified Sandmann.

Trump Backs Off Funding Cuts for Special Olympics

p>President Donald Trump says he is backing off a budget request to cut funding for the Special Olympics, after days of criticism.

Trump told reporters at the White House Thursday, "I've overridden my people for funding the Special Olympics."

The Trump administration's education budget proposal calls for the elimination of $17.6 million in funding for the Special Olympics, roughly 10 percent of the group's overall revenue.

Democrats pressed Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on the topic during a Senate budget hearing Thursday, just days after House Democrats grilled her on the proposal and sparked criticism online.

DeVos said she "wasn't personally involved" in pushing for elimination of the funding, but she defended it as her agency seeks to cut $7 billion from the 2020 budget.

Italy’s 5-Star defends ally Salvini in online vote

ROME (Reuters) – Members of Italy’s ruling governing party the 5-Star Movement voted on Monday to block a possible kidnapping trial against Matteo Salvini, its coalition ally and leader of the hard-right League party.

The online ballot is meant to dictate how 5-Star senators should vote on Tuesday in a parliamentary committee reviewing whether magistrates can continue a probe into Salvini, who is also interior minister and deputy prime minister.

5-Star said on its website that 59 percent of its members had voted to protect Salvini – a result that will help defuse tensions within the government.

The contested case has sown division within 5-Star, which has built its support on pledges to bring transparency to Italian politics and has traditionally denounced parliamentary maneuvering to halt judicial proceedings against lawmakers.

Prosecutors in Catania, Sicily, need permission to continue an investigation for alleged abuse of power and kidnapping that began when Salvini ordered some 150 migrants be held onboard an Italian coast guard ship for five days in August.

Salvini has asked for parliamentary immunity, saying the case focuses on decisions taken by the entire government for the good of the country.

Some of his supporters have questioned how he could stay in an alliance with 5-Star if it did not rally to his side.

Looking to deflect any blame over the awkward decision, 5-Star leader Luigi Di Maio decided to turn the question over to the party’s membership. Some 52,000 party supporters cast a ballot despite technical issues on the website.

After the Senate’s Elections and Immunity Commission rules on the matter, the issue must go before the full Senate for ratification. While some 5-Star lawmakers have indicated they want to see the legal probe continue, the online vote is likely to tie their hands.

Tensions within the coalition are running high, with the allies at odds over a long list of issues, including whether to forge ahead with a new Alpine rail tunnel between France and Italy and whether to grant Italy’s regions more autonomy.

The 5-Star blog post announcing the online vote said the decision to block the migrants on board the Diciotti coast guard vessel was not Salvini’s alone, but was shared by Di Maio and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

Since forging a coalition with the League last June, support for 5-Star has fallen sharply, while backing for Salvini has soared, complicating relations between the two parties.

The League has doubled its support to around 34 percent in just a year, lifted by Salvini’s anti-immigration stance. By contrast, 5-Star has dropped to some 24 percent – down about 8 percentage points since national elections last March.

NY Post: Stephen A. Smith May Get Record-High ESPN Salary

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith could be in for a record payday when his contract is up for renewal, according to a new report.

Sources told the New York Post that Smith, who is on "First Take," hosts a national radio show, and appears on several of ESPN shows throughout the day, could make as much as $10 million per year, which would be the highest amount for anyone at ESPN.

Smith, 51, is an opinion commentator for the sports network. According to the Post, Smith is always willing to go on the air, which is not always the case for the network's personalities. It is believed he makes around $5 million per year at the moment, but he might be in the range of $8 million to $10 million for his next contract.

Smith made headlines in October 2017 when he proclaimed President Donald Trump "highjacked" the National Anthem issue in regard to the NFL players who refused to stand for the song before games.

In 2015, Smith said Democrats have "taken for granted" the black vote.

Video shows dozens of migrants crossing into California

A video shot at a section of U.S.-Mexico border wall dividing a beach shows dozens of migrants squeezing through a breach in a metal fence, and then running north along the sand into California.

U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Theron Francisco said Friday that about 60 migrants gathered on the Mexican side at about 4 p.m. Thursday in Tijuana and most of them forced their way through the opening in the fence.

Francisco says 52 people were detained near Imperial Beach, a Pacific coast town south of San Diego. All later claimed asylum.

They included 27 families, 24 adults and one unaccompanied child. They were from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

Lakewood police tweeted there were multiple fatalities but did not give a specific number. Six people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released, according to the paper.

Lanes in both directions were closed and expected to remain so into Friday morning.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
