Stacey Abrams Nixes VP Spot: 'You Don't Run For Second Place'

Stacey Abrams, whose name has been mentioned as a potential running mate for Joe Biden should he enter the Democratic primary race, Wednesday threw cold water on that idea, saying she is "just as capable" of becoming president as anyone else running for the nomination.

The Georgia Democrat, who became national news during her failed bid in her state's governor's race, told "CBS This Morning" that she's held meetings with nearly everyone, including the former vice-president, but that talks about her being his running mate "were not the core issue."

Later in the morning, Abrams told ABC's "The View" that she's keeping her options open, and dismissed the reports that she'll be part of Biden's ticket.

"I think you don't run for second place," she said. "'If I'm going to enter a primary, then I'm going to enter a primary. And if I don't enter the primary my job is to make sure the best Democrat becomes the nominee and to make sure whoever we select gets elected president."

Abrams told CBS that she is "deeply appreciative" of people urging her to run for the White House or other offices, but she wants to be sure that she's running "for the right reasons and at the right time."

She had commented at the South By Southwest festival earlier this month that at one time she'd considered 2028 to be the earliest time she'd seek a presidential race, but later she tweeted that "2020 is definitely on the table."

The Latest: Mother, daughter claim 1 victim aided killings

The Latest on a mother and daughter charged in the deaths of five relatives in suburban Philadelphia (all times local):

10:30 a.m.

A mother and daughter charged with homicide in the deaths of five relatives, including three children, have told police that one of the victims helped with the killings.

Police in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, say Shana Decree and her 19-year-old daughter, Dominique Decree, were found in the apartment Monday acting disoriented. They were taken to the hospital where they were treated and interviewed by police.

An affidavit describing the charges says both women changed their stories while talking to police. It says they first described one to three unknown men committing the killings, before telling police they had killed several of the family members.

The documents say Shana Decree told police that everyone "wanted to die." The women claimed 42-year-old Jamilla Campbell killed at least one of the children before she herself was choked to death.

7:30 a.m.

Authorities say a Pennsylvania woman charged along with her teenage daughter in the deaths of five relatives, including three children, has been arraigned on murder charges.

The bodies were found Monday inside an apartment in suburban Philadelphia.

Bucks County District Attorney Matthew Weintraub says 45-year-old Shana S. Decree and 19-year-old Dominique Decree are charged with five counts of homicide and one count each of conspiracy.

Shana Decree was arraigned early Tuesday, while her daughter was expected to make her initial court appearance later in the day. The teen remains hospitalized.

It wasn't clear if either woman has retained an attorney.

The victims include Shana Decree's two other children, ages 13 and 25; her 45-year-old sister; and the sister's 9-year-old twin daughters.

Golf: No women’s Masters in Augusta National’s future, says chairman

By Steve Keating

AUGUSTA, Ga. (Reuters) – Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley on Wednesday threw cold water on the idea of one day hosting a women’s Masters alongside the men’s major.

Augusta National, which did not have a woman member until seven years ago, held its first women’s tournament last week on the same course that will play host to the men’s major.

Ridley, however, said the club has no plans to take another step and develop a women’s Masters.

“To date, all of our grow-the-game initiatives have been focused on amateur golf and amateur golfers,” said Ridley during the Augusta National chairman’s annual address on Wednesday.

“In this particular case, we elected to conduct a women’s amateur tournament for really that same reason, but we really wanted this to continue in a grow-the-game sort of mode.

“As to what we might do next, I’m still thinking about last Saturday, so I’ll start thinking about that next week.”

For many the next logical step is for Augusta to organize a women’s Masters. The idea, however, does not seem to excite the Augusta membership.

While Augusta National is best known as the home of the Masters, Ridley believes the club is better serving the amateur roots of co-founders Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones and developing the sport by giving its name to a women’s amateur competition.

“I think part of that kind of goes back to history and that is that Augusta National was founded, co-founded by the greatest amateur of all time,” said Ridley.

After opening its doors to women members in 2012, Augusta National has since made efforts to promote and develop women’s golf, but some in the game remain frustrated by what they see as the painfully slow pace of change.

Asked if the club’s failure to confront its restrictive policies had stunted the growth of the women’s game, Ridley said they could have done better.

“No matter what the issue is, you know, we can always look back and say we could do better,” said Ridley. “No question.

“But what my focus is, is on the future and where we are now and where we want to go. We learn from the past.

“But what I think is most productive is to look at where we are today, realize that throughout the history of this club, we have promoted the game and we have now identified a really important segment, the fastest growing segment of the game – that we can help make a difference.”

Turkey slams EU for attending summit hosted by Egypt

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned European Union leaders for attending a meeting hosted by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, days after the country executed nine suspected Muslim Brotherhood members.

Erdogan questioned "Can you speak of human rights" in the EU when the bloc's leaders agreed to be hosted by el-Sisi.

He was referring to a summit between EU and Arab League leaders held in Sharm el-Sheikh this week.

The nine were convicted of involvement in the 2015 assassination of the country's top prosecutor.

Ties between Egypt and Turkey have been tense since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi. Egypt accuses Turkey of becoming a refuge for Muslim Brotherhood members who fled Egypt.

With Brexit, Britain is in crisis and not for the first time

Few would argue that Britain is in what is often referred to as a bit of a pickle. A crisis in fact, undoubtedly of historic proportions.

With the country mired in confusion and recrimination over how to leave the European Union, many of Britain's centuries-old institutions have clogged up, struggling to meet the challenges of Brexit.

Anthony Seldon, the historian and the vice chancellor of the University of Buckingham, calls it the "biggest political and constitutional crisis" to afflict the country in 300 years — since the Glorious Revolution of 1688 when King James II was replaced by the joint monarchy of King William III and Queen Mary II.

A look at some of the other crises that have beset Britain since the end of World War II:

___

SUEZ CRISIS

Before Brexit, arguably the biggest crisis of British diplomacy and its standing in the world occurred in 1956 in the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. When Egypt's leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser, nationalized the canal, Britain, in secret, along with France and Israel, joined forces to take control of it.

Worried about a potential Soviet intervention, U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower warned the coalition to withdraw. They duly did. Within months, it had spelled the end of Anthony Eden's premiership in Britain. More importantly, it crystallized the moment when Britain realized that its great power status had come to an end.

___

PROFUMO SEX SCANDAL

Eden's successor, Harold Macmillan, wasn't the type to get entangled in imperial misadventures. He hastened Britain's decolonization and focused on Europe. However, his premiership was cut short when his Secretary of State for War John Profumo was implicated in a sex-and-spy scandal with showgirl Christine Keeler, who was also having a liaison with a Russian naval attache at the same time.

The scandal, which came at the height of the Cold War, shattered the reputation of Macmillan's government and the prime minister quit in 1963. A year later, the Conservative Party lost power for the first time in 13 years.

___

3-DAY WEEK

After surprisingly winning the 1970 election, Conservative Prime Minister Edward Heath sought to tackle the government's increasing reliance on trade unions. However, his premiership was soon overwhelmed by mounting sectarian violence in Northern Ireland, including the "Bloody Sunday" killing of 13 people at a civil rights march in Londonderry in January 1972.

His premiership was cut short two years later when the powerful coal miners went on an overtime ban that wreaked havoc.

In December 1973, following the Yom Kippur War between Israel and Arab nations that saw the OPEC oil cartel quadruple oil prices, Heath declared a state of emergency as the country couldn't meet its energy needs. Heath imposed a three-day working week and speed restrictions. Professional soccer on Sunday, banned in the country for decades, also became a feature for the first time because there wasn't enough energy to power all the floodlights required on the traditional schedule on Saturdays.

Amid all the chaos, Heath called an early election for February 1974, and asked "Who governs Britain?"

Too many said "not you obviously" and Labour returned to power.

___

WINTER OF DISCONTENT

The unions continued to shake the political landscape throughout the 1970s. After Britain was bailed out by the International Monetary Fund in 1976, the Labour government sought to work with the unions on getting Britain's economy back to health.

After years of pay restraint, they snapped and there was massive industrial unrest during the winter of 1978-1979 — a period commonly referred to as the Winter of Discontent. The dead lay unburied and the garbage piled up. Britain was, according to many commentators at the time, becoming ungovernable. That was particularly true in Northern Ireland, where the violence continued and spilled over onto the British mainland.

In many ways, the late 1970s has echoes with today's Brexit crisis. The government of then-prime minister, James Callaghan, just like Theresa May's now, was a minority one and faced knife-edge votes to get things done. Eventually, Callaghan lost a vote of confidence and Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives won the ensuing election.

___

FALKLANDS WAR

Thatcher became the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th century, lasting until 1990. But it wasn't pre-ordained that she would be. By 1982, her government was in trouble. The strict monetarist economic medicine she used to bring down inflation had led to interest rates rocketing and unemployment spiking to the previously unimagined 3 million-mark. In 1981, riots erupted across Britain.

In 1982, salvation came from the unlikely source of Argentina. The country's military junta invaded the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic, a relic of the British Empire. After a little more than two months of conflict, the British prevailed. Thatcher had triumphed and subsequently won two sizeable election victories.

___

CURRENCY CRASH

Britain had in 1973 joined what was then called the European Economic Community. By 1992, it had joined the Exchange Rate Mechanism, whereby the pound floated within narrow ranges against other European currencies such as the German Deutsche Mark. It was the precursor to the euro but the experience ended in humiliation for Britain when hedge funds, including the Hungarian billionaire George Soros, betted against the pound — and won.

Sept. 16, 1992 became known as "Black Wednesday" — a day that the British government was vanquished by currency speculators. Though the pound's exit from the ERM heralded a period of strong growth for the British economy, the government of Prime Minister John Major became increasingly divided over Europe. Tony Blair led the Labour Party back into government for the first time in 18 years.

___

IRAQ WAR

All went smoothly for Blair — at first. The British economy was in the midst of an unprecedented period of economic growth and peace had finally been achieved in Northern Ireland through 1998's Good Friday Agreement.

But Blair's agenda was overwhelmed by the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the U.S. Blair became a close ally of President George W. Bush, and his decision to participate in the war in Iraq alienated many — not least because no weapons of mass destruction were ever found. Blair's reputation has never fully recovered.

___

FINANCIAL CRISIS

Blair's successor, post 2007, was Gordon Brown, his long-time Treasury chief. His time at the helm was marked by the global financial crisis, the greatest peacetime shock to afflict the global economy since the depression of the 1930s.

Following the collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers in September 2008, the financial crisis went global. Banks around the world, including big U.K. names such as Lloyds and Royal Bank of Scotland, had to be bailed out by the taxpayer. Britain endured its deepest recession since WWII. Though Brown won plaudits for his handling of the crisis, he lost the 2010 general election.

___

BREXIT SAGA

Five years later, Prime Minister David Cameron promised to honor one aspect of his Conservative Party's manifesto — a commitment to hold a referendum on Britain's 40-plus-year membership of the EU.

In June 2016, Britain voted for Brexit, and Cameron's successor May has been swamped by the fallout of that decision, in particular how it affects the seamless border between Northern Ireland and Ireland — a mainstay of the Good Friday Agreement that brought peace.

It is arguably the greatest of all Britain's postwar crises.

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.

Hundreds of Cuban migrants are reported to be on the run Friday in Mexico after a crowd of more than 1,000 burst out of a troubled immigration detention center on its southern border.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said the mass escape Thursday in Tapachula – which the Associated Press called the largest in recent memory — involved around 1,300 Cuban migrants, although 700 of them have since returned voluntarily.

The migrants reportedly streamed out of the compound without any resistance, as the institute said its agents weren’t armed and “there was no confrontation.”

Federal police with riot shields later rushed in to control the situation, as a crowd of angry Cubans whose relatives were being held at the facility gathered outside. The Cubans claimed their relatives reported overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at the facility.

BORDER PATROL UNION CHIEF BLASTS CONGRESS OVER MIGRANT CARAVANS: ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT’?

“My wife and child have been in there for 27 days in bad conditions,” said Usmoni Velazquez Vallejo, as he waited outside for news. “There is overcrowding, insufficient food and there isn’t even medicine for them.”

Another Cuban detainee told the AFP: “We have many there… we are very tight, we sleep on the floor.”

It’s the third time since October that migrants at the facility staged an uprising, according to the news agency.

The center’s holding capacity is officially listed at less than 1,000 people, but the escape of 1,300 meant it was probably at least at double its capacity, since not everyone being held there escaped. Residents in the area said that sometimes the facility has held as many as 3,000 people, and a Mexican newspaper cited by Reuters said Haitians and Central Americans also are among the large group who still have not been tracked down.

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

The Washington Post’s media critic went into meltdown after White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders held a mock press briefing for the children of White House journalists and employees on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

Erik Wemple, the newspaper’s chief media critic, slammed Sanders and the White House for organizing a fun day on Thursday for junior would-be journalists, while not holding an actual press conference for the record number of days.

WHITE HOUSE STAFF TO SKIP CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER AFTER LAST YEAR’S CONTROVERSY

Wemple wrote that Sanders gave to children an important lesson of “the centrality of nonaccountability mechanisms in the affairs of state” after she announced that the mock press briefing was “off the record.”

“When the children head home tonight, perhaps they can pull up archival footage to see how their questions stack up against ye olde press briefings,” he added.

“Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

“Tuesday, after all, marked a record for number of days without a White House press briefing. Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

While some correspondents praised the White House for doing “a lot of work to welcome the children and provide “them an excellent experience,” other journalists echoed Wemple’s criticism and pointed out that Sanders hasn’t held a press briefing in over 40 days.

“Kids of WH Press Corps members are getting ready for a briefing with  @PressSec. Their parents have not had one in 45 days,” tweeted CBS News’ White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang.

REPORTER SHOUTS AT SARAH SANDERS AFTER BRIEFING: ‘DO YOUR JOB, SARAH!’

“The irony of it is that they’re pretending that the White House press briefing is a thing, and they’re pretending that this is how the White House operates, but this is not at all how the White House operates … It’s a relic of an earlier time,” another correspondent quoted by the Post said.

The Post struck a different tune in a column earlier this year, which declared that despite the administration’s criticism of the media, President Trump was “extremely accessible.”

Wemple quoted Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project, who said that Trump held 338 “short question-and-answer” sessions over his time in office, significantly more than 75 such sessions by former President Barack Obama during his first full two years in office.
