Dutch fertility doctor secretly fathered 49 children, DNA tests reveal

A Dutch fertility doctor who was accused of impregnating patients with his sperm without their consent fathered 49 children, DNA tests revealed.

Jan Karbaat, who died in April 2017 at the age of 89, impregnated patients at his clinic in Bijdorp, near Rotterdam, a port city in South Holland, the BBC reported. The clinic shuttered in 2009. DNA tests results were announced Friday after a court ruled in February to “release his DNA,” which was taken off items like a toothbrush.

FERTILITY DOCTOR ACCUSED OF SWAPPING DONOR SPERM WITH HIS OWN

A group of the doctor’s suspected children and their parents took Karbaat to court in 2017 following suspicions that they may all be related. The doctor inseminated his patients with his sperm instead of using or thatthe chosen donor.

DNA tests showed Karbaat fathered 49 children, according to Defence for Children International, which helped the case. Many of the children are now in their thirties, Sky News reported.

DUTCH POLICE MAKE NEW ARREST IN DEADLY UTRECHT TRAM SHOOTING

Tim Bueters, a lawyer who represented the children, told Dutch broadcaster NOS that “there is finally clarity for the children who are matched.”

One of Karbaat’s children said he is glad to have the truth confirmed.

Navy Seeks More Funding to Combat China Pacific Threats

A key Naval commander recently told lawmakers that U.S. Indo-Pacific Command needs more funding to help combat the growing threat posed by China.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Adm. Phil Davidson wrote a letter to the Senate Armed Services Committee last month to plead his case.

The 2020 budget, Davidson wrote, falls short on enough funding to support "immediate and necessary resources" for the Indo-Pacific Command, which covers more than 100 million square miles.

Davidson said more funding would support Army units in Asia, air defense units, upgrading Navy guided-missile destroyers, and building a system to defend Guam from attacks.

"I appreciate your continued support and advocacy for those critical capabilities necessary to counter the pernicious actions of our near peer rivals," Davidson wrote.

China has stepped up its military actions in recent years, which includes building and arming artificial islands in disputed waters of the South China Sea and allegedly shining lasers at U.S. military aircraft.

In December, one Chinese military expert even called on the Chinese to "ram" the next U.S. warship that sails through disputed waters to which China stakes claim.

MILAN (Reuters) – Revenue at Ferrero reached $12 billion in the fiscal year ended in August, as the group included sales of products like Butterfinger and BabyRuth chocolate bars bought from Nestle at the end of March.

The group, which was founded by Pietro Ferrero in the Italian town of Alba in 1964, started an aggressive acquisition campaign four years ago under the leadership of Executive Chairman Giovanni Ferrero.

Last year the maker of chocolate spread Nutella and mint candies Tic Tac spent $2.8 billion buying the U.S. confectionery business of the Swiss food giant.

The company said on Wednesday its consolidated revenue rose 2.1 percent to 10.7 billion euros in the fiscal year to end August.

(Reuters) – The cost of a comprehensive motor insurance policy fell one percent in Britain in the first quarter, pushed down by uncertainty around the rate used to calculate compensation for personal injuries and the Civil Liability Bill, a survey showed.

The average premium for a comprehensive policy is now 762 pounds ($997.08), according to the latest index from price comparison site Confused.com compiled by insurance advisory company Willis Towers Watson.

“The fluctuation in premium levels seen across recent quarters reflects ongoing uncertainty surrounding the impact of the Civil Liability Bill and the anticipated adjustment to the Ogden rate,” said Stephen Jones, UK P&C Leader at Willis Towers Watson.

Prices in 2018 were also pushed down by changes in the Ogden rate, used to calculate compensation for personal injuries and the Civil Liability Bill, which includes reforms likely to reduce claims for whiplash injuries.

Whiplash is a form of neck injury caused by a sudden jolt that snaps the head backwards but insurers argue https://reut.rs/2TQ4sBY that many claims in such cases are fraudulent.

The report, based on price figures compiled using anonymous data from all enquiries submitted on Admiral Group’s Confused.com, said 2019 could see further price fluctuations as Civil Liability Bill and Ogden effects overlay upon rising costs of crash repairs.

“With claims costs increasing, new technologies entering the car market we can expect an upturn in premiums is on the horizon,” Steve Fletcher, head of Data Insight at Confused.com, said.

Companies such as Admiral, RSA Insurance Group Plc, Direct Line Insurance Group Plc, esure and Hastings Group Holdings Plc provide motor insurance for Britain’s highly competitive insurance sector.

Mexican president says illegal immigration to U.S. ‘is not up to us’

March 28, 2019

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Thursday he was committed to helping curb illegal immigration after renewed Twitter criticism by U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, but he suggested it was an issue chiefly for the United States and Central America to address.

Illegal immigration across the U.S. border has caused persistent bilateral tensions ever since Trump launched his bid for the presidency almost four years ago, saying that Mexico was sending rapists and drug runners into the United States.

With initial campaigning for the 2020 U.S. presidential election already underway, Trump sent out a tweet early Thursday that again attacked Mexico over migration.

“Mexico is doing NOTHING to help stop the flow of illegal immigrants to our Country,” Trump wrote. “They are all talk and no action. Likewise, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador have taken our money for years, and do Nothing.”

Trump again threatened to close the U.S. southern border.

At his regular morning news conference, Lopez Obrador was asked about Trump’s tweet, and said he was focused on addressing the root causes of migration. He repeated that he wanted a cordial relationship with Trump.

“We respect president Trump’s position, and we are going to help. That is, this is a problem of the United States, or it’s a problem of the Central American countries. It’s not up to us Mexicans, no,” Lopez Obrador told reporters.

“I just emphasize that migration flows of Mexicans to the United States are very low, a lot lower,” he said. “The Mexican is no longer seeking work in the United States. The majority are inhabitants of our fellow Central American countries.”

Trump’s latest broadside came one day after the United States, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador agreed to conduct joint police operations in Central America to improve border security and tackle illegal immigration.

The three countries account for the bulk of migrants apprehended trying to cross illegally into the United States.

Trump’s remarks also followed calls on social media for a new caravan of migrants to form in Honduras.

Over the weekend, a group of around 1,200 migrants, most of them from Central America, began moving toward the U.S. border from southern Mexico.

If no Brexit deal by March 20, parliament will get say on way forward: minister

March 14, 2019

LONDON (Reuters) – If British lawmakers have not passed a Brexit deal by March 20, the government will give parliament the opportunity to vote on the way forward, Minister for the Cabinet Office David Lidington said on Thursday.

The government has proposed to seek a three-month delay to Britain’s exit if a Brexit deal is approved by March 20, but has said a much longer extension of the Article 50 negotiation period would likely be needed if that has not happened.

“We would be faced with the prospect of choosing only a long extension during which the House (of Commons) would need to face up to the choices in front of it and the consequences of the decisions,” Lidington, Prime Minister Theresa May’s de facto deputy, told parliament.

“The government recognises that the House will require time to consider the potential ways forward in such a scenario so … (the government) would facilitate a process in the two weeks after the March European Council to allow the House to seek a majority on the way forward.”

Gettysburg College trustee resigns over 1980 photo showing him dressed as Nazi

A member of the board of trustees at a Pennsylvania college resigned this week after a yearbook photo surfaced that shows him and others dressed as Nazis at a 1980 party.

Bob Garthwait, who graduated from Gettysburg College in 1982, has made significant donations to the school over the years, Harrisburg’s FOX 43 reported.

The photo shows Garthwait holding a plastic cup and wearing a military-style uniform, with a swastika band clearly visible on his left arm. He is standing along with four other students who are similarly dressed, though no swastikas are visible on their attire.

SWASTIKA PAINTED ON DUKE MURAL HONORING SYNAGOGUE VICTIMS

The photo was discovered last week by Cameron Sauers, a history major doing research in the college archives, the Gettysburgian, a student newspaper, reported. According to the Associated Press, fellow history major Hannah Labovitz determined Garthwait's identity.

Labovitz told the AP that Garthwait’s resignation from the board shows he understands “how serious the situation is.”

“It wasn’t just him — it was the school that allowed this to be in the yearbook and there were zero complaints when it was allowed to be published,” Labovitz said Tuesday.

In a statement, Garthwait said the photo was taken during a “Hogan’s Heroes”-themed fraternity party when he was a sophomore at the school, FOX 43 reported. The reference is to a TV comedy series from the 1960s and 1970s that depicted crafty Allied prisoners of war outwitting bungling Nazi soldiers.

“I understand how disturbing this image is to members of the Gettysburg College community, and especially those who are Jewish,” Garthwait wrote in his statement.

“I understand how disturbing this image is to members of the Gettysburg College community, and especially those who are Jewish.”

— Bob Garthwait, former trustee, Gettysburg College

“As a sophomore in 1980, I was not fully aware of the significance of those symbols. While this is no excuse, I am deeply embarrassed and regret participating in this event where Nazi symbols were used. As an alumnus, it has been one of my great pleasures to be instrumental in the founding of the Garthwait Leadership Center, which focuses on the values of integrity, respect, and inclusiveness.

“My sincere hope is that our current students will learn from my poor judgement [sic] 38 years ago and be more thoughtful than I was about the impact of their actions on others. I extend my sincere apologies to the entire Gettysburg College community, and I humbly ask for your forgiveness.”

Gettysburg College President Janet Morgan Riggs issued a separate statement:

“Bob has made the decision to step down from the Board of Trustees. Clearly he regrets that he participated in this event and the harm it has caused to our community about which he cares so deeply,” Riggs wrote.

“Conversations will continue with our Board about this situation. My hope is that all of us in the College community will learn from this — that it will inspire compassion for one another and a re-dedication among all of us to creating a climate in which all feel welcome.”

Gettysburg College is a private, four-year liberal arts college of about 2,400 students, located near the Gettysburg Battlefield.

(Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures were flat on Friday, as investors paused ahead of GDP data, which is expected to show the world’s largest economy maintained a moderate pace of growth in the first quarter.

Gross domestic product probably increased at a 2% annualized rate in the quarter as a burst in exports, strong inventory stockpiling and government investment in public construction projects offset a slowdown in consumer and business spending, according to a Reuters survey of economists.

The Commerce Department report will be published at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The GDP data comes as investors look for fresh catalysts to push the markets higher. The S&P 500 index is about 0.5% below its record high hit in late September, after surging nearly 17% this year.

First-quarter earnings have been largely upbeat, with nearly 78% of the 178 companies that have reported so far surpassing earnings estimates, according to Refinitiv data.

Wall Street now expects S&P 500 earnings to be in line with the year-ago quarter, a sharp improvement from the 2.3% fall expected at the start of April.

Amazon.com Inc rose 0.9% in premarket trading after the e-commerce giant reported quarterly profit that doubled and beat estimates on soaring demand for its cloud and ad services.

Ford Motor Co shares surged 8.5% after the automaker posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings largely due to strong pickup truck sales in its core U.S. market.

Mattel Inc jumped 8% after the toymaker beat analysts’ estimates for quarterly revenue, as a more diverse range of Barbie dolls powered sales in the United States.

At 6:52 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 35 points, or 0.13%. S&P 500 e-minis were down 1.5 points, or 0.05% and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 10.75 points, or 0.14%.

Among decliners, Intel Corp slumped 7.7% after it cut its full-year revenue forecast and missed quarterly sales estimate for its key data center business.

Rival Advanced Micro Devices declined 0.8%.

Oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp are expected to report results later in the day.

WARSAW (Reuters) – Germany could owe Poland more than $850 billion in reparations for damages it incurred during World War Two and the brutal Nazi occupation, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Germany, one of Poland’s biggest trade partners and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO, says all financial claims linked to World War Two have been settled.

The right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) has revived calls for compensation since it took power in 2015 and has made the promotion of Poland’s wartime victimhood a central plank of its appeal to nationalism.

PiS has yet to make an official demand for reparations but its combative stance towards Germany has strained relations.

“Poland lost not only millions of its citizens but it was also destroyed in an unusually brutal way,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who heads the Polish parliamentary committee on reparations, told Reuters in an interview.

“Many (victims) are still alive and feel deeply wronged.”

His comments come a month before European Parliament elections in which populist and nationalist parties are expected to do well. Poland will also hold national elections later this year, with PiS still well ahead of its rivals in opinion polls.

EU LARGESSE

Mularczyk said the reparations figure could amount to more than 10 times the estimated 100 billion euros ($111 billion) that Poland has received so far in European Union funds since it joined the bloc in 2004.

Germany is the biggest net donor to the EU budget and some Germans regard its contributions as generous compensation to recipient countries like Poland which suffered under Nazi rule.

In 1953 Poland’s then-communist rulers relinquished all claims to war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to free East Germany, also a Soviet satellite, from any liabilities. PiS says that agreement is invalid because Poland was unable to negotiate fair compensation.

Mularczyk said his committee hoped to complete its report on the reparations issue by Sept. 1, the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s invasion.

Accusing Berlin of playing “diplomatic games” over the issue, he said: “The matter is being swept under the rug (by Germany) … until it’ll be wiped from the memory, from people’s awareness.”

His comments come after the Greek parliament voted this month to seek billions of euros in German reparations for the Nazi occupation of their country.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States did not pay any money to North Korea as it sought the release of comatose American student Otto Warmbier.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump had approved payment of a $2 million bill from North Korea to cover its care of the college student, who died shortly after he was returned to the United States after 17 months in a North Korean prison.

Al-Qaida in Yemen is vowing to avenge beheadings carried out by Saudi Arabia this week — an indication that some of the 37 Saudis executed on terrorism-related charges were members of the Sunni militant group.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, as the branch is called, posted a statement on militant-linked websites on Friday, accusing the kingdom of offering the blood of the “noble children of the nation just to appease America.”

The statement says al-Qaida will “never forget about their blood and we will avenge them.”

U.S. ally Saudi Arabia on Tuesday executed 37 suspects convicted on terrorism-related charges. Most were believed to be Shiites but at least one was believed to be a Sunni militant.

His body was pinned to a pole in public as a warning to others.

For two friends with checkered pasts it was the luck of a lifetime: a 4 million-pound ($5.2 million) lottery win.

But Mark Goodram and Jon-Ross Watson may see their celebrations cut short.

The Sun newspaper reports that Britain’s National Lottery is withholding the payout as it investigates whether the men, who have a string of criminal convictions, used illicit means to buy the winning ticket.

The Sun said neither man has a bank account, leading lottery organizers to investigate how they obtained the bank-issued debit card that paid for the 10 pound ($13) scratch card.

Camelot, which runs the lottery, said Friday it couldn’t confirm details of the story because of winner-anonymity rules. The firm said it holds a “thorough investigation” if there is any doubt about a claim.
