Study: Soft Bedding a Grave Danger to Sleeping Babies

Almost 70% of babies who died from sleep-related suffocation between 2011 and 2014 did so because of soft bedding, a new study reveals.

The finding underscores physicians’ urgent message to new parents that babies should sleep only in cribs or bassinets free of blankets, toys and other potential hazards.

Unintentional suffocation is the No. 1 cause of injury death in babies less than a year old in the United States, with more than 80% of cases occurring in bed. The new study, from a University of Virginia Health System physician and her colleagues, sheds light on how that is happening, revealing that soft bedding is responsible for the vast majority of sleep-related infant deaths (69%). The second most common cause was due to overlay by another person (19%), with 71% of these occurring while sleeping in the same bed with a parent and/or sibling. The third most common was “wedging,” in which babies become trapped between two objects, such as a mattress and wall (12%).

“These results are very significant, because these deaths – clearly due to suffocation – were all preventable” said UVA’s Fern Hauck, MD. “It is also important to note that the causes of suffocation differed by infant age. So, overlaying is a bigger problem for the youngest infants, soft bedding affects infants most commonly under 4 months, and wedging more a problem when infants are older and can move around in bed.”

Democrats have legalized the ability to kill a viably-born child.

Unsafe Infant Sleep Practices

Sleep-related suffocation and strangulation was responsible for 14% of all sudden, unexpected infant deaths during the period reviewed, the researchers determined. Death by soft bedding was most likely to occur in an adult bed, with the babies on their backs. Most often, the suffocation or strangulation was caused by a blanket or blankets.

When babies died of overlay, it was most often the mother who overlaid the infants. In wedging deaths, babies were most likely to become trapped between the mattress and a wall.

“Keeping infants safe is a priority for parents, and these types of suffocation deaths can be prevented by following the American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep guidelines,” Hauck said. “These include: placing infants to sleep in a safety-approved bassinet or crib in the caregivers’ room; not placing infants alone or with others on adult beds to sleep; keeping all soft objects out of the infant’s sleep area, including blankets and pillows (wearable blankets are preferred over loose blankets); and placing infants on their back to sleep.”

In conducting the study, the researchers reviewed more than 1,800 infant deaths classified as suffocation in the Centers for Disease Control’s national Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Case Registry. The deaths occurred between 2011 and 2014, the most recent year for which data was available. All the babies were less than a year old.

Texas teen beat his mother with baseball bat, slit her throat with friend’s help, police say

Two Texas teenagers are facing capital murder charges Thursday after allegedly killing one of their mothers by beating her with a baseball bat and slitting her throat – all because she witnessed them burglarizing her home.

Matthew Dempsey confessed to murdering his mother, Mary Helen Dempsey, 53, inside her San Antonio home around early Tuesday morning, with the help of his friend Daniel Saucedo, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the San Antonio Express-News. Both are now being held in Bexar County Jail on $1 million bails.

Investigators say Saucedo and Dempsey – who was armed with a gun – entered the property with a key and started "gathering items they were going to take from the home."

But when the mother returned home, walked in and turned on the lights, Dempsey, they say, started bludgeoning her from behind with a baseball bat, with Saucedo joining in the attack shortly thereafter.

Dempsey, according to the San Antonio Express-News, also told authorities he grabbed a knife from the kitchen and slit his mother’s throat. The 18-year-olds then wrapped her body in duct tape and covered her with a blanket, according to the affidavit.

After rifling through her wallet, the pair loaded the stolen items into her car and took money out of her bank account at an ATM, the newspaper added.

Mary Helen Dempsey’s daughter noticed later that day that her mother didn’t show up for work and went to the house, only to find it “ransacked” with her car missing, the affidavit said. Inside the home, she discovered a blanket surrounded by a pool of blood, laid over her mother’s body, and called 911.

Mary Helen Dempsey was pronounced dead at the scene and police eventually tracked down and arrested Dempsey and Saucedo. A trash bag containing bloody clothes reportedly was found by officers at the former’s mobile home.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – China has chosen a new chairman for sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corp (CIC), two sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday, filling the top role after two years of vacancy.

Peng Chun, chairman of Bank of Communications (BoCom), will become CIC’s chairman, three people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. BoCom is China’s fifth-biggest lender.

“Chairman Peng has already left for CIC. BoCom will make a public announcement soon,” one of the sources said.

CIC managed $941 billion as of the end of 2017, the most recent year for which a figure is available. It could not immediately be reached for comment. BoCom declined to comment.

Bloomberg reported Peng’s move earlier on Tuesday.

Peng, 57, had a stint at CIC as vice general manager between 2010 and 2013.

Headquartered in Beijing, CIC was founded in 2007 to help China earn a higher return on its foreign exchange reserves.

CIC has invested in overseas companies including online property rental firm Airbnb, Canadian mining company Teck Resources to U.S. private equity house Blackstone.

Foreigners Now Half of Berlin’s Prison Population

Foreigners now make up half of the prison population in Berlin, Germany, and officials are struggling to conquer the language barrier complicating even the simplest of tasks.

A private company that provides video translators around-the-clock is being considered to address the crisis because city’s current administration “wants to avoid” inmates serving as translators for prison workers.

"People often can not even tell us if their abdominal pain is due to a co-prisoner beating them up," said an official.

Since 2013, while the percentage of foreign prisoners rose from 35% to 50%, the total number of prisoners decreased.

Because of this, the country’s official language is now the de facto foreign language in its own prisons, a phenomenon a prison committee chairman links to Europe’s migration crisis.

“The trend has intensified [since] the year 2015,” said the chairman. “[It] is obvious that the wave of immigration has to do with it.”

“In my view, nobody was prepared for such a development.”

Correspondingly, officials in Germany's neighbor France have acknowledged their own prison issues linked to foreign occupants.

The nation’s law enforcement is stretched to its limits and prisons are becoming outlets for Islamic radicalization, says French MP Valérie Boyer.

“There’s a shortage of prison space,” said the French MP. “All while radicalization prospers, especially in prisons.”

Will Johnson presents video footage of U.S. representative Ilhan Omar crediting her successful career to her own personal history of practicing Islamic traditions rather than recognizing that America is the land of the free that allowed her to have the amazing opportunity to become a United States congresswoman.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – Grammy-winning singer Taylor Swift announced the release of her new single “ME!” on ABC television’s broadcast of the National Football League draft in Nashville on Thursday.

Swift, 29, said the song and its music video will be released at midnight on Friday and will feature Brendon Urie, the lead singer of Panic! at the Disco.

“‘ME!’ is a song about embracing your individuality and really celebrating it and owning it,” she said during an interview with ABC host Robin Roberts.

“With a pop song, we have the ability to get a melody stuck in people’s heads and I just want it to be one that makes them feel better about themselves,” she said.

Swift began her career as a country singer in Nashville at age 15 before branching out with pop hits such as “Shake It Off” and “Bad Blood.”

The NFL held the first round of its annual draft on Thursday. The rest of the seven-round draft will be held at the weekend.

Swift had been hinting on social media about a coming announcement and posting photos of flowers, kittens and jewels, all in a pastel palette.

On Thursday afternoon, Swift surprised hundreds of her fans by joining them at the unveiling of a butterfly wing mural in the Gulch area of the city. “ME!” was written in the center of the mural as a hint to her evening announcement.

Her last album was 2017’s revenge-oriented “Reputation,” which included songs such as “Look What You Made Me Do” that took aim at people who had attacked her personally and professionally.

Iowa sues to shut down national puppy laundering ring

The Iowa Attorney General's Office is suing to shut down what it describes as a national puppy laundering ring that sells dogs from illegal breeding operations at inflated prices.

The office said in a news release that puppy laundering is the use of nonprofit rescue groups to obscure the source of dogs, deceive consumers and circumvent "puppy mill" bans.

It says it filed a lawsuit Monday against breeder J.A.K.'s Puppies, and nonprofits Hobo K9 Rescue and Rescue Pets Iowa Corp. The lawsuit also alleges four ringleaders violated Iowa's consumer fraud act.

The state is seeking $40,000 in fines per violation, plus reimbursement to defrauded customers.

It says the operations sold almost 1,300 animals in California, Illinois, Florida and New Jersey for more than $700,000.

Video shows teen's beating during West Virginia traffic stop

A West Virginia prosecutor has released a police dashcam video of a 16-year-old boy being beaten by officers during a November traffic stop.

Berkeley County Prosecutor Catie Wilkes Delligatti released the eight-minute video to The Associated Press on Thursday. The teen's face is redacted in the video, taken from a sheriff's cruiser.

Authorities originally denied media requests for the video, citing the investigation.

Two state troopers and a sheriff's deputy were fired in January. Another deputy who was fired recently got his job back.

One trooper was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday on one count of deprivation of rights under color of law — language used to describe crimes committed by police officers while on duty.

The indictment accuses Kennedy of using excessive force resulting in bodily injury.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s a look at what you need to know today …

EXCLUSIVE: Trump says ‘Sleepy Joe’ Biden doesn’t have what it takes

President Trump, in a wide-ranging, exclusive phone interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, dismissed the launch of former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Biden, the president said, has name recognition but he won’t “be able to do the job.” When asked about Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Trump criticized his record, saying Sanders had “misguided energy” and asserted that Sanders “talks a lot” but hasn’t accomplished anything. The president referred to former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas as “a fluke” who had lost much momentum and outright dismissed Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg — although he said he was “rooting” for Buttigieg. (Trump could address Biden and the other Democratic presidential candidates when he speaks today before the National Rifle Association.)

The Democratic Party’s youth movement: Biden’s biggest challenge?
Former Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Howard Dean warned Joe Biden about the troubles he may face in his presidential campaign, especially from the “35-year-olds” who Dean says have been running the party — a clear nod to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and fellow freshmen Democrats. “This is a very different party than even the party Joe Biden ran in in 2012. Very different,” Dean continued. “A lot of people could win this race. There’s 20 people in there. I think it’s going to take $20 million to get to the starting line. If you can’t raise $20 million, you’re gone, and I think that’s going to take care of about six or eight of these folks. … But it is not the same party that it was five years ago.” A progressive political group that boosted Ocasio-Cortez’s bid for Congress last year vowed to oppose Biden and blasted him as part of the “old guard.”

More tales from the FBI texts
Text messages between former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page indicate they discussed using briefings to the Trump team after the 2016 election to identify people they could “develop for potential relationships,” track lines of questioning and “assess” changes in “demeanor” – language one GOP lawmaker called “more evidence” of irregular conduct in the original Russia probe. Fox News has learned the texts, initially released in 2018 by a Senate committee, are under renewed scrutiny, with GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley and Homeland Security Committee chair Ron Johnson sending a letter Thursday night to Attorney General Bill Barr pushing for more information on the matter. President Trump, speaking on Fox News’ “Hannity” Thursday night, responded to this report by accusing Strzok and Page of an attempted “coup.” “They were trying to infiltrate the administration,” he said.

Kim accuses US of acting in ‘bad faith’
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, fresh off his summit with  Russian President Vladimir Putin, said the U.S. has been acting in “bad faith” since his Hanoi meeting with President Trump over the stalemated issue of North Korean denuclearization. The North Korean leader told the Korean Central News Agency that, “the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the region is now at a standstill and has reached a critical point,” the Straits Times of Singapore reported. Kim warned that the situation “may return to its original state as the U.S. took a unilateral attitude in bad faith at the recent second DPRK-US summit talks,” the Korean Central News Agency added.

NFL Draft 2019: It’s all about defense
The first round of the 2019 NFL Draft saw a run on defensive players, with eight of the top 12 picks in Nashville coming from that side of the ball. After Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was taken first overall by the Arizona Cardinals, the San Francisco 49ers started a run of four straight front-seven players by taking Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa with the second overall pick — the highest draft slot for any Buckeye since left tackle Orlando Pace went No. 1 overall to the St. Louis Rams in 1997.
