Axios: Trump Considers Attending WH Journalists' Dinner

President Donald Trump is considering attending the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, an event he has boycotted the last two years, Axios reported on Wednesday.

Trump has not yet decided on whether or not he is attending the April 27 dinner, but some are suggesting that he would go as part of an extended “victory lap” after the Mueller report concluded that Trump did not collude with the Russians during the 2016 election campaign.

Aviso, however, said it is not clear if the president is serious about attending and said it would be awkward for everyone if he did decide to go to the event.

Since Attorney General Bill Barr sent a summary of the Mueller report to Congress, Trump has increased his attacks on the media.

"The Mainstream Media is under fire and being scorned all over the World as being corrupt and FAKE,” Trump tweeted.

“For two years they pushed the Russian Collusion Delusion when they always knew there was No Collusion. They truly are the Enemy of the People and the Real Opposition Party!"

Messi haunted by failures but retirement still long way off

March 29, 2019

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Lionel Messi says he constantly replays Argentina’s 2014 World Cup final defeat in his head but has vowed that a recent international sabbatical was a one-off and he has no plans to retire in the near future.

The Barcelona striker, speaking on an Argentine radio station on Friday, also surprised listeners by saying he misses Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who left rivals Real Madrid for Juventus last year.

“I miss Cristiano in Spain,” Messi told Radio C5N. “It was lovely having him here, even though it annoyed me seeing him win so many titles. It would be great if he was still here.”

Messi, a five-times Ballon d’Or winner, has begun 2019 in fine form with his Barcelona side running away with La Liga and through to the Champions League quarter-finals.

He also returned to international action last week in a lackluster 3-1 defeat by Venezuela, a game that was his first for the national side since he took a break following the 2018 World Cup.

Argentina were knocked out of the tournament in the second round and Messi, who has still not scored a goal in the knockout stages of any of the four World Cups in which he has featured, was criticized by some fans.

The 31-year-old said going from Barcelona to Argentina was difficult and blamed their poor performances in Russia on a swift transition from promoting younger players to take up senior positions in the team.

“I think the generational change was very brusque,” Messi said. “It should have been done slower. You need to give the kids time and confidence. The change was a really big one.”

Messi said he was still tortured by the loss of the 2014 World Cup final to Germany in extra time and warned fans not to expect too much from Argentina at this year’s Copa America in Brazil.

“Do you know the number of times I’ve replayed the final and the chances we had? It would have been so different if we’d scored one of them,” he explained.

“Being realistic, a lot of work is needed to be a powerhouse. These kids have played very few matches for the national team. We need to be patient and I have no doubt that we are going to be strong.”

“I am going to stretch out my retirement as long as I can,” Messi said, adding that if he did return to Argentina it would be to play for his hometown club Newell’s Old Boys.

“I would love to end my career at Newell’s but it’s not easy. Sincerely, I don’t know.”

MUNICH (Reuters) – German chipmaker Infineon Technologies aims to bring in outgoing Voestalpine Chief Executive Wolfgang Eder as its chairman in August, replacing Eckart Suenner earlier than expected.

Eder, who was elected to the Infineon supervisory board last year with a view of taking over as chair in the medium term, is stepping down as Voestalpine CEO in July.

However, he will remain on the Austrian steelmaker’s supervisory board and is expected to take chairmanship of the company in about two years.

His nomination as Infineon chairman in addition to those roles had triggered investor concern about his accumulation of offices.

The chipmaker also hopes to conclude its search for a new Chief Financial Officer quickly, putting a focus on female candidates, Suenner said at the company’s shareholder meeting on Thursday.

Current finance head Dominik Asam is leaving to join aircraft manufacturer Airbus in April.

Earlier this month, Infineon cut its forecast for full-year revenue growth, blaming difficult markets, but said it expects a better second half as demand rebounds and inventories are worked off.

“The boom is over. We are now in a phase of moderate growth”, chief executive Reinhard Ploss told shareholders.

Sen. Warner: Barr Should 'Swiftly Prepare' Declassified Version of Mueller Report

Attorney General William Barr should “swiftly prepare a declassified version” of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, says Democratic Sen. Mark Warner.

"Congress and the American people deserve to judge the facts for themselves. The Special Counsel's report must be provided to Congress immediately, and the Attorney General should swiftly prepare a declassified version of the report for the public. Nothing short of that will suffice,” the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee said in a statement Friday.
“It is also critical that all documents related to the Special Counsel's investigation be preserved and made available to the appropriate Congressional committees,” he added.
“Any attempt by the Trump Administration to cover up the results of this investigation into Russia's attack on our democracy would be unacceptable."

Mueller on Friday delivered his long-awaited report to the Justice Department, a process that took 675 days and ate up most of Trump’s presidency.

Mueller’s team has indicted or won guilty pleas from 34 people and three companies as part of his investigation that has also probed issues unrelated to the 2016 campaign.

None of Trump’s associates have been charged with crimes related to collusion, though Roger Stone in January was charged with lying about his communications with WikiLeaks, the outlet that published hacked Democratic emails during the election.

Trump has repeatedly decried the probe as a “witch hunt” and has emphatically denied he or his campaign colluded with Russia to undermine Democrat Hillary Clinton’s chances.

South Korea’s Constitutional Court rules abortion ban incompatible with constitution

SEOUL, South Korea — In a major reversal, South Korea’s Constitutional Court on Thursday ordered the easing of the country’s decades-long ban on abortions, one of the strictest in the developed world.

Abortions have been largely illegal in South Korea since 1953, though convictions for violating the ban are rare. Still, the illegality of abortions forces women to seek out unauthorized and often expensive surgeries to end their pregnancies, creating a social stigma that makes them feel like criminals.

The court’s nine-justice panel said that the parliament must map out legislation to ease the current anti-abortion regulations by the end of 2020. It said the current abortion ban will be repealed if the parliament fails to come up with new legislation by then.

OHIO 'HEARTBEAT' ABORTION BILL CLEARS LEGISLATURE, AWAITS GOVERNOR'S SIGNATURE

An easing of the ban could open up the door to more abortions for social and economic reasons. Current exceptions to the law only allow abortions when a woman is pregnant through rape or incest, or when a pregnancy seriously jeopardizes her health, or when she or her male partner has certain diseases.

A woman in South Korea can now be punished with up to one year in prison for having an abortion, and a doctor can get up to two years in prison for performing an abortion.

Most other countries in the 36-member Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the so-called most developed countries, allow abortions for broad social and economic reasons. South Korea is one of only five OECD member states that don’t allow such abortions, according to the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.

Thursday’s verdict was a response to an appeal filed in February 2017 by an obstetrician charged with carrying out about 70 unauthorized abortions from 2013-2017 at the request or approval of pregnant women.

The South Korean public has been sharply split over on the abortion ban. There has been a series of heated panel discussions on TV and internet programs; activists, both for and against, have for months stood with placards near the court.

About 15 pro-women’s rights activists shouted “Abolish the anti-abortion law” near the court’s entrance earlier Thursday. More than 20 pro-life activists held placards carrying images of fetuses and message like “Who can speak for me?” and “Don’t kill me, please.”

It’s not clear exactly how many abortions take places in South Korea. In a recent survey of 10,000 women aged between 15 and 44, about 7.6%, or 756 respondents, said they had undergone an abortion. They mostly cited worries about difficulty in continuing their studies and jobs, economic problems and a desire to wait, according to the survey conducted by the state-run Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs.

Giuliani wants Dems who went too far in attacks on Trump to admit mistakes

Rudy Giuliani, President Trump’s lawyer who called for a “complete investigation” on the origins of the Russia collusion investigation, took to Twitter early Monday and called on Democrats who "went too far" in their attacks and false claims against the president during the probe to admit their mistakes so the country can "heal."

Giuliani made the comments just hours after Attorney General Willaim Barr declared that special counsel Robert Mueller did not find evidence that the Trump campaign “conspired or coordinated” with Russia in hopes  to influence the 2016 presidential election.

Trump cheered the outcome but also laid bare his resentment after two years of investigations that have shadowed his administration. “It’s a shame that our country has had to go through this. To be honest, it’s a shame that your president has had to go through this,” he said.

Giuliani took to Twitter to ask if Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif.; House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., and others will apologize “for their now false claims of collusion.”

“If they care about our country,  they should be relieved they were wrong. Are they?” he asked.

He called on news outlets like CNN and MSNBC and said he hopes they can “realize their overreactions” and hopes for fairer treatment in the future.

READ THE MUELLER REPORT FINDINGS

It appears Democrats are seizing on the part of the report that focuses on the obstruction of justice. Mueller stated that “while this report does not conclude that the President committed  a crime, it also does not exonerate him.”

Some Democrats say that line leaves open the possibility of wrongdoing.

Nadler said, "The job of Congress is much broader than the job of the special counsel. The special counsel is looking and can only look for crimes. We have to protect the rule of law, we have to look for abuses of power, we have to look for obstructions of justice, we have to look for corruption in the exercise of power which may not be crimes."

Alan M. Dershowitz, the attorney and Harvard Law professor emeritus, slammed Mueller on Sunday, saying the special counsel engaged in a “cop out” by stating that his report neither exonerated Trump nor concluded he'd committed a crime related to obstruction of justice.

Dershowitz said Mueller seemed to try having it both ways. “It sounds like a law-school exam,” he said, adding that the report sounded wishy-washy. “Shame on Mueller.”

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
