Curling: Former NFLers take aim at becoming Olympic curlers

By Frank Pingue

(Reuters) – A group of former NFL players who took up curling with Olympic-sized dreams may not have struck fear in opponents’ eyes like they did on the gridiron but they still consider their inaugural campaign a sweeping success.

Former Minnesota Vikings great Jared Allen and his team had no curling experience between them when they formed last March but that has not deterred them from chasing the lofty goal of representing the United States at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.

“You tell people that and they think that’s very boastful, very aggressive. But setting mediocre goals is setting yourself up for mediocrity,” Allen told Reuters in a telephone interview.

“I always like to shoot for the moon and see what happens.”

That drive led Allen, who terrorized quarterbacks during a 12-year NFL career that ended in 2016, to recruit former St. Louis Rams quarterback Marc Bulger, Tennessee Titans linebacker and offensive tackle Keith Bulluck and Michael Roos.

The quartet, who were all Pro Bowl selections during their National Football League careers, shared the desire of competing at either the summer or winter Olympics but they were not initially sure what sport they would pursue to try and reach their goal.

Allen, 36, said the original plan was to take up badminton, an idea that was quickly abandoned after he realized just how nimble and agile players need to be.

“After watching videos of badminton it was like ‘man these guys are actually pretty darn athletic.’ They were flying all over and diving on the hard court and I was like I don’t think my back would hold up,” said Allen.

“So we went to a less physically taxing sport, and I figured when the winners have to buy the losers a beer as a customary tradition (in curling), how rough can that sport actually be.”

TRYING NOT TO FALL

The Nashville-based team, who practice on ice provided by the city’s National Hockey League team, will compete at the Feb. 21-24 Mile High Open in Colorado to cap a campaign in which they failed to qualify for the U.S. national championships.

Known as the All Pro Curling Team, the quartet have come a long way from the first handful of times they stepped foot on a curling sheet, when Bulger says simply trying not to fall was the main goal.

While the team are confident they will soon master the sliding technique and physical demands of sweeping, they need to focus mainly on strategy, admitting it is difficult for them to see what seems obvious to their more experienced opponents.

“When I first watched curling … you just think you are going for the button, the center of the house, every time. And that’s not the case,” Bulger, 41, told Reuters. “There’s just so much more to it and so that’s our biggest thing.”

But Bulger said that what his team mates lack in experience on the pebbled ice, they more than make up for it when it comes to having to handle outside pressures given their former careers competing in America’s most popular sport.

“We had TV cameras following us and media (while we were playing in the NFL) and unless it’s the Olympics there’s never really that attention around the curling circuits,” said Bulger.

“So people get a little nervous around that but we are so used to it and kind of thrive on it. Even on pressure shots we thrive on it.”

‘DEVELOP OUR SKILLS’

The four have come quite a long way in a short period of time and while they have not experienced much success when it comes to winning actual matches, they say competitors are often surprised that they have only been curling for less than a year.

Bulluck said opponents have not looked down at the former NFLers’ attempt to make some noise in the curling world and instead have welcomed them with open arms, offering tips and advice along the way.

While some onlookers might not consider a group of newcomers much of a threat, Bulluck suggests his team possess a different type of advantage given the never-say-die mindset the former professional athletes honed in the NFL.

“We were All-Pro caliber players in the NFL, which means at some point we were the top players at what we did. We are able to focus and put in the time that it takes to become elite at something you do,” said Bulluck. “So we are kind of banking on that.”

The team’s first pro tournament came last November when, without the services of Bulluck and Roos and in their place a pair of regular curlers, they were easily beaten 11-3 by the reigning U.S. Olympic champions.

But the former NFLers were undeterred and despite tempered expectations, they remain committed to booking a spot in Beijing, which means by the 2020-21 season they need to be earning enough points at World Curling Tour events to qualify for the Olympic trials.

“Having no preconceived notions about how this was going to go, I think it was successful in terms of just getting started and figuring things out,” Roos told Reuters.

“We’re definitely at that point now where we’ve got to put more effort in and work hard and really, really start to develop our skills if we really want to make this a legitimate chance.”

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The U.S. economy is in a healthy place “from a pure monetary policy perspective,” but there is more work policymakers can do to make sure growth is widely shared, a top Federal Reserve official said on Thursday.

“We’re closing in on the longest economic expansion on record, unemployment is at historically low levels, and inflation is close to our 2 percent target,” Federal Reserve Bank of New York President John Williams said in remarks prepared for delivery at a Association for Neighborhood and Housing Development conference in New York.

“From a pure monetary policy perspective, this is a healthy economy. But I’m acutely aware that not everyone is feeling the benefits of the economy’s good performance.”

Williams said the regional central bank he runs can provide research to local community development organizations as well as push initiatives that target wage and housing inequality. The speech did not deal at length with Williams’ views on monetary policy.

US-backed fighters make limited advances against IS in Syria

A spokesman for the U.S.-backed Syrian forces fighting the Islamic State group says they've made "limited advances" in the latest push on the last remaining area held by the extremists in Syria.

Mustafa Bali of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces says there were still IS militants in the besieged village of Baghouz on Monday, mainly hiding in underground tunnels.

The offensive on the last IS-held pocket in Syria's eastern Deir el-Zour province near the Iraqi border resumed on Sunday evening, after Bali said a deadline expired for IS gunmen in Baghouz to surrender.

He says warplanes struck ammunition belonging to the extremists.

Bali said that "if as we advance, we notice there are civilians, we will do all we can to evacuate them from the battlefield."

Trump, Pompeo brush aside Kim’s deadline for nuclear talks flexibility

By David Brunnstrom and Matt Spetalnick

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump and his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday brushed aside North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s demand for Washington to show more flexibility in nuclear talks by year-end, with Pompeo saying Kim should keep his promise to give up his nuclear weapons before then.

Asked about Kim’s statement last week that he was only interested in meeting Trump again if the United States came with the right attitude, Pompeo told reporters that the president was “determined to move forward diplomatically.”

But Pompeo said Kim had made a commitment to denuclearize and “we collectively need to see that outcome move forward.”

“Our teams are working with the North Koreans … to chart a path forward so that we can get there. He said he wanted it done by the end of the year. I’d love to see that done sooner.”

Trump and Kim have met twice, in Hanoi in February and Singapore in June, seeming to build personal goodwill but failing to agree on a deal to lift sanctions in exchange for North Korea abandoning its nuclear and missile programs.

The Hanoi talks collapsed after Trump proposed a “big deal” in which sanctions would be lifted if North Korea handed over all its nuclear weapons to the United States. He rejected partial denuclearization steps offered by Kim.

Breaking his silence on the summit in a speech to North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly on Friday, Kim said it was “essential for the U.S. to quit its current calculation method and approach us with a new one.”

He said the outcome in Hanoi led him to question the strategy he embraced last year of international engagement and talks with the United States.

Kim said his personal relationship with Trump was still good, but that he had no interest in a third summit if it were a repeat of Hanoi.

He said North Korea would “wait for a bold decision from the U.S. with patience till the end of this year,” raising the potential for the unresolved North Korea nuclear issue to become a liability for Trump during his 2020 re-election bid.

TRUMP: NORTH KOREA ISSUE ‘MOVING ALONG’

In a speech on Monday in Burnsville, Minnesota, Trump nevertheless maintained an upbeat tone on North Korea, saying the issue was “moving along” with Pyongyang sticking to a freeze in nuclear and missile testing in place since 2017.

He again stressed his “very good relationship” with Kim “who just said the other day he looks forward to more talks.”

“Talk is OK. Talk is OK,” Trump said adding that he did not want the process to move fast. “It doesn’t have to move fast. Right now it’s moving along just perfectly. And we have a good relationship, the sanctions are on … there’s a lot of constructive things going on.”

On Saturday, Trump said a third summit with Kim “would be good in that we fully understand where we each stand.”

Despite Trump’s and Pompeo’s remarks, U.S. officials have acknowledged that the two sides have failed to agree on a definition of denuclearization. And in a year of talks, Pyongyang has given no public indication of willingness to abandon its weapons program unilaterally as Washington has demanded.

At a meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Washington last Thursday, Trump expressed a willingness for a third summit with Kim but said Washington would leave sanctions in place.

On Friday, Kim accused Washington of escalating hostility “despite its suggestion for settling the issue through dialogue” and called the U.S. policy of sanctions and pressure “as foolish and dangerous an act as trying to put out fire with oil.”

Last month, a senior North Korean official warned that Kim might rethink the test freeze unless Washington makes concessions such as easing sanctions.

‘Doggie Door Bandit’ sought by Oregon police after captured squeezing into home

It's not what the dog dragged in, but who dragged themselves in through the dog's door that's drawn the attention of authorities in Oregon.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that a burglary suspect used a doggie door to get into a home last Tuesday.

The incident happened in Clackamas around 10:30 a.m. when the man made a "brazen entry" into the home through the doggie door that was captured on a surveillance camera.

WOMAN STEALS ELECTRIC SCOOTER FROM WALMART, DRIVES IT TO WAFFLE HOUSE TO GET COFFEE, POLICE SAY

"The video clearly captures the suspect looking in the window, then entering through the doggie door," the sheriff's office said. "After the suspect realizes he's on camera, he attempts to conceal his identity by quickly pulling a hood tightly over his head and then covering the camera with a blanket."

The "Doggie Door Bandit" slipped into a home on April 2, before stealing several items, according to police.

White House Statement Hits Democratic Candidates on Israel

The White House is claiming the entire slate of Democratic presidential candidates has failed to adequately condemn anti-Semitism and consistently rejected the need to protect Israel.

The sweeping statement issued Saturday by White House spokesman Hogan Gidley comes after Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke compared the rhetoric used by President Donald Trump to describe immigrants to the rhetoric used in Nazi Germany.

O'Rourke made the comments during multiple campaign stops in Iowa on Thursday. The White House did not respond to a request for comment at the time.

Instead of directly addressing O'Rourke's comments, the statement from Gidley sought to attack the Democratic party on the same day that Trump is scheduled to speak at the annual meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas.

Tennessee coach Rick Barnes was named the winner of the Naismith Coach of the Year Award, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced Sunday during a press conference in Minneapolis.

Barnes is the first Tennessee men’s coach to win the award. Legendary women’s coach Pat Summitt won it five times.

Barnes was selected over Texas Tech’s Chris Beard, Virginia’s Tony Bennett and Houston’s Kelvin Sampson.

“To say the least, I’m honored. I’m humbled really,” Barnes said in a statement. “When you’re able to receive an award like the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach of the Year, you know it goes to your players and your assistant coaches.”

Barnes guided the Volunteers to a 31-6 mark, matching the school record for victories. Tennessee notched a school-record 19 straight wins during a season in which it reached the Sweet 16 before losing in overtime to Purdue.

The Volunteers also spent four weeks at No. 1 during the campaign. That made Barnes only the sixth coach to lead multiple programs to the top spot, joining John Calipari, Frank McGuire, Rick Pitino, Eddie Sutton and Roy Williams.

Barnes had Texas at No. 1 for two weeks in January 2010.

HOUSTON (Reuters) – Chevron Corp on Friday pushed back at the potential for a rival to break up its $33 billion deal for Anadarko Petroleum Corp, saying the two companies had already begun meetings on a merger plan.

Occidental Petroleum on Thursday sought to scuttle the proposed deal, submitting a higher, $38 billion cash-and-stock offer for Anadarko. Anadarko’s board said on Thursday it would evaluate the new proposal.

“I’ll just remind everyone that we’ve got a signed deal that has been approved by both boards and we’ve moving forward with integration planning,” said Chevron Chief Executive Michael Wirth on a conference call with analysts. He said a “sizeable” group of employees had already met.

Wirth declined to say whether Chevron would raise its offer in light of Occidental’s higher bid. Chevron has the ability revise the structure of its 75 percent stock, 25 percent cash bid, Chevron finance chief Pierre Breber said on the same call. “We could put more cash in if that’s what Anadarko wanted to do,” he said.

LONDON (Reuters) – A London court case to extradite Arif Naqvi, founder of collapsed private equity firm Abraaj Group, to the United States on fraud charges was adjourned until May 24, a court official said on Friday.

Naqvi was remanded in custody until that date, the official said. A former managing partner of Dubai-based Abraaj, Sev Vettivetpillai, was released on conditional bail to appear again at Westminster Magistrates Court on June 12, the official said.

Under the U.S. charges, both men are accused of defrauding U.S. investors by inflating positions held by Abraaj in order to attract greater funds from them, causing them financial loss, the official said.

Vettivetpillai could not be reached for a comment.

Naqvi, in a statement released through a PR firm, has pleaded innocent.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alleges that Naqvi and his firm raised money for the Abraaj Growth Markets Health Fund, collecting more than $100 million over three years from U.S.-based charitable organizations and other U.S. investors.

Naqvi and Vettivetpillai were arrested in Britain earlier this month. Another executive, Mustafa Abdel-Wadood was arrested at a New York hotel, Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea Griswold said at a hearing in Manhattan federal court on April 11.

Abdel-Wadood appeared at the Manhattan hearing and pleaded not guilty to securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy charges.

Former Vice President Joe Biden announces his 2020 candidacy

By James Oliphant

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, in his first interview as a Democratic presidential candidate, said on Friday that he does not believe he treated law professor Anita Hill badly during the 1991 confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Biden had joined the burgeoning 2020 Democratic field a day earlier.

Biden’s conduct during those hearings, when he was chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, became a renewed subject of controversy after the New York Times reported that Biden had called Hill earlier this month in the run-up to his presidential bid and that Hill was dissatisfied with Biden’s expression of regret.

Appearing on ABC’s “The View,” Biden largely defended his actions as a senator almost 30 years ago, saying he believed Hill’s allegations of sexual harassment levied at Thomas and tried to derail his confirmation.

Activists have long been unhappy that Hill was questioned in graphic detail by the all-white, all-male committee chaired by Biden.

“I’m sorry she was treated the way she was treated,” Biden said, but later, he asserted, “I don’t think I treated her badly. … How do you stop people from asking inflammatory questions?”

“There were a lot of mistakes made across the board and for those I apologize,” he said.

Biden praised Hill as “remarkable” and said she is “one of the reasons we have the #MeToo movement.”

Asked why he had not reached out to Hill earlier, Biden said he had previously publicly stated he had regrets about her treatment and that he “didn’t want to quote invade her space.”

That seemed to be a reference to another controversy that looms over Biden’s presidential run: allegations by several women that he made them uncomfortable by touching them at political events.

Biden also addressed that criticism, saying he was now more “cognizant” about a woman’s “private space.” But he maintained that he had been “trying to bring solace.”

He suggested he was still trying to sort out the guidelines for his conduct going forward.

“I should be able to read better,” he said. “I have to be more careful.”

Pressed by the show’s panel for an apology to his accusers, Biden would not entirely capitulate.

“So, I invaded your space,” he replied. “I mean, I’m sorry this happened. But I’m not sorry in a sense that I think I did anything that was intentionally designed to do anything wrong or be inappropriate.”

Biden, 76, served as former President Barack Obama’s vice president for two terms. He is competing with 19 others for the Democratic presidential nomination and the chance to likely face President Donald Trump next year in the general election.

His first public event as a presidential candidate is scheduled for Monday in Pittsburgh.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Tesla Inc’s stock slumped over 4% on Friday to its lowest price in two years, rounding out a rough week that included worse-than-expected quarterly results and a pitch by Chief Executive Elon Musk on autonomous cars that failed to win over investors.

With investors betting Tesla will soon raise capital, the stock has fallen 13% for the week to its lowest level since January 2017, before the launch of the Model 3 sedan aimed at making the electric car maker profitable.

One positive development for Tesla: a U.S. District Court judge on Friday granted a request by Musk and the Securities and Exchange Commission for a second extension to resolve a dispute over Musk’s use of Twitter.

On Wednesday, Tesla posted a worse-than-expected loss of $702 million for the March quarter. Musk said Tesla would return to profit in the third quarter and that there was “some merit” to raising capital.

Musk is still battling to convince investors that demand for the Model 3, the company’s first car aimed at the mass consumer market, is “insanely” high, and that it can be delivered efficiently to customers around the world.

Tesla ended its first quarter with $2.2 billion, down from $3.7 billion in the prior quarter, and the company is planning expansions including a Shanghai factory, an upcoming Model Y SUV, and other projects.

(GRAPHIC: Tesla’s cash – https://tmsnrt.rs/2DyJjX6)

On Monday, Musk hosted a self-driving event, where he predicted Tesla would have over a million autonomous vehicles by next year. Some analysts perceived the presentation as a way to deflect attention from questions about demand, margin pressure, increasing competition and even Musk’s ongoing battle with U.S. regulators.

Tesla’s stock has now fallen 29 percent in 2019 and the company’s market capitalization has declined to $41 billion from $63 billion in mid-December.

(GRAPHIC: Tesla’s declining market cap – https://tmsnrt.rs/2Dwd62r)

Analysts now expect Tesla’s revenue to expand 19% in 2019, compared with 83% growth in 2018 and 68% growth in 2017, according to Refinitiv.

Following Tesla’s quarterly report, 12 analysts recommend selling the stock, while 11 recommend buying and eight are neutral. The median analyst price target is $275, up 16% from the stock’s current price of $236. Berenberg analyst Alexander Haissl has the most optimistic price target, at $500, while Cowen and Company’s Jeffrey Osborne has the lowest, at $160, according to Refinitiv.

Former CIA Director John Brennan pushed back Friday on President Trump’s charge that he knew about or participated in an attempt to overthrow the American government.

“I don’t think it’s surprising at all that we continue to hear the sociopathic ramblings of Mr. Trump claiming that there was this effort to try to prevent him from being elected or to unseat him,” he told MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson.

Brennan was reacting to comments Trump made during an interview with Sean Hannity on Thursday night.

Trump specifically criticized Brennan, along with former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former FBI Director James Comey, and former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, in the fiery interview.

ROSENSTEIN SLAMS OBAMA ADMINISTRATION FOR CHOOSING ‘NOT TO PUBLICIZE FULL STORY’ OF RUSSIA HACKING

His comments followed the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s report which stopped short of accusing the president of either obstruction of justice or collusion with Russia.

Brennan added he welcomed further investigation into his and other officials’ conduct while they served in government. “I’ve testified in front of Congress … Absolutely, I’ll do it again,” he said.

Brennan also disputed Sen. Rand Paul’s, R-Ky., claim that he “insisted that the unverified and fake Steele dossier be included in the Intelligence Report.”

Journalist Bob Woodward similarly promoted the idea that the CIA pushed to include the Steele dossier in the intelligence community assessment surrounding Russian election interference.

“That’s absolutely incorrect and 180 degrees from the truth. It was CIA that was pushing not to have it included and not to be taken into account at all in that intelligence community assessment.
