Elizabeth Smart talks to Wisconsin high school about Jayme Closs, her own abduction

Kidnapping victim Elizabeth Smart visited a Wisconsin high school Friday night to discuss her own abduction with the region that was coping after teenager Jayme Closs was found after a three-month disappearance.

Smart, 31, spoke at Barron High School in Barron, Wis., to a crowd of more than 1,300 people. Smart, who was 14 when she was kidnapped from her Salt Lake City home in 2002, said after she was found that she could not go anywhere without being recognized. She called her abduction “the most terrifying experience of my entire life.”

“I was a very similar age to Jayme when I was kidnapped and it was the most terrifying experience of my entire life,” Smart said.

Smart was discovered nine months later while walking with Wanda Barzee and her husband, Brian Mitchell, in the suburb of Sandy; people had recognized the couple from media reports. The couple was arrested in 2003. Mitchell is serving a life sentence while Barzee was released from Utah State Prison in September.

JAYME CLOSS' KIDNAPPER ANSWERS NAGGING QUESTIONS IN STUNNING LETTER: 'I DON'T THINK LIKE A SERIAL KILLER'

“I really wondered if people would ever be able to have anything to do with me ever again,” Smart told the crowd. “I really did wonder if I still had value.”

Smart talked about how she found it hard to return to public life following her abduction.

“I want you to understand what it is to be a victim so that as we move on and we talk about moving forward and how you interact and what’s appropriate and what’s not appropriate and you understand what it’s like to be in the victim’s shoes,” Smart said.

She told residents to give Closs “space” and to smile instead of staring if they see the teen.

Prosecutors have accused Jake Patterson, 21, of breaking into Closs’ home just outside Barron in October, killing her parents with a shotgun and abducting her. They say he held her in a cabin for three months before the 13-year-old escaped in January.

NO NEW CHARGES FOR JAYME CLOSS KIDNAPPING SUSPECT, WISCONSIN PROSECUTOR SAYS

Smart said she has spoken to Closs and called her “extraordinary” and a “survivor.”

“Despite the horrors that she saw, despite the terrible things that she suffered that are hers and hers alone to share, she still escaped ... she is a survivor,” Smart said.

The Barron County Sheriff’s Department thanked Smart for speaking to the community.

“Again this community showed the world how great we are and that we will come out in force and will do anything for a member and her family in our community,” Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald wrote on Facebook.

CNN: ‘Trump Doesn’t See Black People As Fully Human’

Abandoning any pretence of being an impartial news broadcaster, a CNN panelist on Monday declared that President Trump does not see black people as “fully human.”

The panel was discussing Trump’s response to director Spike Lee’s comments at the Oscars.

Lee referred to Trump’s presidency as ‘immoral’ and ‘hateful’ during an acceptance speech for the BlacKkKlansman movie, prompting the President to fire back on Twitter, labeling Lee as ‘racist.’

CNN analyst Kierna Mayo, the former editor-in-chief of Ebony Magazine, made the comments about Trump during a discussion with Don Lemon and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

“This is a president who knows he’s on the wrong side of history. So you’ve hit the dog. In other words, he’s barking because he knows that he exemplifies all that Spike and his courageous film are really standing against.” Mayo declared.

Lemon asked if Trump really “believes he’s somehow solved racism and this is the best time ever for African-Americans,” prompting Mayo to make the scathing remark.

“I don’t even think he really — this may be out there. But I don’t really think the president sees black people as fully human.” she replied.

She added “I don’t think he sees us as having agency, intelligence, as noted by his comment about  Spike, you know he wishes he could read,” referring to Trump’s dig at Lee for seemingly not being able to read his own notes during the speech.

Clearly believing that every word Trump utters is secretly or overtly racist, Mayo added “There’s always some subtle suggestion that black people need to catch up, keep up, and if it were not for his graciousness, if it were not for his attentiveness, his loving kindness, we would be in a hell of a place.”

Mayo then asserted that Trump is a racist and that most black people look at Trump and think “this is a person who actively hates me.”

Spike Lee won his first Oscar last night and used that opportunity to trash America and President Trump. Alex points out the indoctrination being pushed on minorities that they cannot be racist.

April 11, 2019

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Credit Suisse Group AG on Thursday named veteran banker Yves-Alain Sommerhalder as head of its newly-created Asia Pacific trading solutions business, which seeks to use market expertise to sell products to wealth management clients.

The launch of Asia trading solutions comes nearly two years after Credit Suisse set up international trading solutions that brings in elements of the bank’s markets activities as well as its international wealth management and Swiss banking arms.

As Asia trading solutions unit head, Sommerhalder, who will retain his role as co-head of international trading solutions, will oversee the Asia Pacific markets business and the regional financing group activities, Credit Suisse said in a statement.

Credit Suisse’s markets business was profitable in 2018 on an adjusted basis, and is expected to break-even in the first quarter despite “very challenging market conditions,” it said, citing estimates and management expectations.

The bank is due to report its first quarter results on April 24.

Sommerhalder, who joined the Swiss bank in 2002, has worked previously in senior positions in the bank’s sales and trading businesses. He is a member of the management committee for the global markets and international wealth management units.

The Reparations Scam Is Back – and Dems Are Falling For It

I have lived long enough to be embarrassed for politicians and others who don't know history. Such ignorance is especially galling when presidential hopefuls go to kiss the ring of the ignominious Al Sharpton to seek either his blessing or neutrality as they pursue their party's nomination at the top of its 2020 ticket.

Yemen’s Houthis ignoring calls for political solution: Saudi minister

DUBAI (Reuters) – Saudi Arabia’s deputy defense minister on Wednesday blamed Yemen’s Houthi movement for a stalled peace deal in the main port of Hodeidah, saying the Iran-aligned group was ignoring the kingdom’s call for a political solution to the four-year war.

Saudi Arabia is leading a Western-backed Sunni Muslim military coalition that intervened in Yemen in 2015 to restore the internationally recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, which was ousted from power in the capital Sanaa by the Houthis in late 2014.

“They are ignoring our calls for a political solution to this crisis,” Prince Khalid bin Salman said at a security conference in Moscow, in his first comments on Yemen since becoming deputy defense minister in February.

The warring parties reached a deal at U.N.-sponsored talks in Sweden in December for a ceasefire and troop withdrawal from the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, a lifeline for millions of people.

The Houthis say they are ready to implement the Hodeidah deal, but that the other side is obstructing it.

The truce has largely held but the redeployment of forces has stalled with each side blaming the other for impeding the pact, the first major breakthrough in peace efforts in over four years aimed at paving the way for political negotiations.

Prince Khalid, a son of King Salman and a full younger brother of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, accused regional rival Iran of trying “to seize the Yemeni state” by supporting the Houthis, who control Hodeidah and most urban centers in Yemen.

The Houthis deny being puppets of Iran and say their revolution is against corruption.

The conflict, which has killed tens of thousands of people and pushed the poorest Arabian Peninsula nation to the brink of famine, is largely seen in the region as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and its arch foe Shi’ite Muslim Iran.

The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), a database tracking violence in Yemen, last week said around 70,000 people have been reported killed since the start of 2016.

Western nations, some of which supply arms and intelligence to the alliance, have increased pressure on Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to end the conflict following the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi last October at the hands of Saudi agents at the kingdom’s Istanbul consulate.

Patriots owner Kraft says ‘I am truly sorry’ in first public comments since prostitution bust

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft on Saturday said, “I am truly sorry,” speaking publicly for the first time since prosecutors accused him last month of twice soliciting sex at a Florida massage parlor.

“I know I have hurt and disappointed my family, my close friends, my co-workers, our fans and many others who rightfully hold me to a higher standard," Kraft said in a statement without specifically referring to the charges that have been brought in Palm Beach County.

“Throughout my life, I have always tried to do the right thing,” he said. “The last thing I would ever want to do is disrespect another human being. I have extraordinary respect for women; my morals and my soul were shaped by the most wonderful woman, the love of my life, who I was blessed to have as my partner for 50 years.”

PATRIOTS OWNER KRAFT OFFERED PLEA DEAL IN FLORIDA PROSTITUTION CASE

The billionaire also said, “As I move forward, I hope to continue to use the platform with which I have been blessed to help others and to try to make a difference. I expect to be judged not by my words, but by my actions. And through those actions, I hope to regain your confidence and respect,” according to CBS 4 Boston.

He said he had not commented previously out of deference to the judicial process.

On Wednesday, Kraft reported rejected a plea deal, the station reported.

PATRIOTS' ROBERT KRAFT ALLEGEDLY VISITED FLORIDA SPA FOR SEX ACTS ON DAY OF AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Police say a hidden camera captured Kraft, 77, paying for sex at Orchids of Asia in Jupiter on Jan. 19 and Jan. 20 -- the day before and the day of the AFC Championship game. Police installed the camera as part of the investigation.

Kraft has pleaded not guilty to two counts of soliciting prostitution.

Malta leads on cryptoassets regulation while EU ponders

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – As the European Commission ponders whether the European Union needs rules for cryptoassets and trading in virtual currencies, EU states are moving ahead with their own regulations, with the smallest of them, Malta, leading the pack.

The risks of investing in the industry were made clear last year when Bitcoin, the most successful cryptocurrency, lost three-quarters of its value from a peak around $20,000 in late 2017. The market capitalization of cryptoassets dropped to $110 billion at the end of January from $830 billion a year earlier.

These market developments have occurred in a “legal vacuum”, said Robert Ophele, the head of France’s financial regulator. Speaking at a financial-technology conference in Brussels, he urged the EU Commission to propose new regulations to address risks.

Last month, EU regulators called for new rules to prevent money laundering and protect investors. But the Commission, the sole source of new EU legislation, so far has avoided taking action, fearing it will hamper the nascent industry.

“We have to make sure that our financial sector rules do not inadvertently hinder useful innovation,” said the financial services commissioner, Valdis Dombrovskis. Brussels was still considering whether EU action was needed, he said.

MALTA HUB

Individual EU states are moving into the vacuum, despite risks that uncoordinated action could weaken the EU market. The French parliament is passing cryptoassets legislation, and Germany’s finance ministry has begun a consultation on a blockchain strategy that will be published before summer.

Smaller states are ahead of them. Luxembourg passed its rules this year, and the Baltic countries have long been active in the sector, industry consultant Peter Moricz said.

The boldest is Malta, which has set up a broad regulatory framework and aims to become Europe’s cryptohub.

“We are the first EU jurisdiction to have a complete framework that caters for all key areas of risk: the risks to consumers, market integrity, financial crime and cyber security,” Joseph Cuschieri, the head of the Maltese financial regulator, told the Brussels conference.

The Mediterranean island is already home to the EU’s largest online gambling industry and a large financial-services sector, which have been drawn there by advanced regulation and low taxes.

But these successes have partly been marred by foreign investigations of several gambling firms and banks on the island that have exposed weak enforcement by local authorities.

“As a result of these failures, we have learnt how to strengthen our supervision,” said Christopher Buttigieg, a top supervisor at Malta Financial Services Authority.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

Lakewood police tweeted there were multiple fatalities but did not give a specific number. Six people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released, according to the paper.

Lanes in both directions were closed and expected to remain so into Friday morning.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s a look at what you need to know today …

EXCLUSIVE: Trump says ‘Sleepy Joe’ Biden doesn’t have what it takes

President Trump, in a wide-ranging, exclusive phone interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, dismissed the launch of former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Biden, the president said, has name recognition but he won’t “be able to do the job.” When asked about Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Trump criticized his record, saying Sanders had “misguided energy” and asserted that Sanders “talks a lot” but hasn’t accomplished anything. The president referred to former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas as “a fluke” who had lost much momentum and outright dismissed Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg — although he said he was “rooting” for Buttigieg. (Trump could address Biden and the other Democratic presidential candidates when he speaks today before the National Rifle Association.)

The Democratic Party’s youth movement: Biden’s biggest challenge?
Former Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Howard Dean warned Joe Biden about the troubles he may face in his presidential campaign, especially from the “35-year-olds” who Dean says have been running the party — a clear nod to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and fellow freshmen Democrats. “This is a very different party than even the party Joe Biden ran in in 2012. Very different,” Dean continued. “A lot of people could win this race. There’s 20 people in there. I think it’s going to take $20 million to get to the starting line. If you can’t raise $20 million, you’re gone, and I think that’s going to take care of about six or eight of these folks. … But it is not the same party that it was five years ago.” A progressive political group that boosted Ocasio-Cortez’s bid for Congress last year vowed to oppose Biden and blasted him as part of the “old guard.”

More tales from the FBI texts
Text messages between former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page indicate they discussed using briefings to the Trump team after the 2016 election to identify people they could “develop for potential relationships,” track lines of questioning and “assess” changes in “demeanor” – language one GOP lawmaker called “more evidence” of irregular conduct in the original Russia probe. Fox News has learned the texts, initially released in 2018 by a Senate committee, are under renewed scrutiny, with GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley and Homeland Security Committee chair Ron Johnson sending a letter Thursday night to Attorney General Bill Barr pushing for more information on the matter. President Trump, speaking on Fox News’ “Hannity” Thursday night, responded to this report by accusing Strzok and Page of an attempted “coup.” “They were trying to infiltrate the administration,” he said.

Kim accuses US of acting in ‘bad faith’
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, fresh off his summit with  Russian President Vladimir Putin, said the U.S. has been acting in “bad faith” since his Hanoi meeting with President Trump over the stalemated issue of North Korean denuclearization. The North Korean leader told the Korean Central News Agency that, “the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the region is now at a standstill and has reached a critical point,” the Straits Times of Singapore reported. Kim warned that the situation “may return to its original state as the U.S. took a unilateral attitude in bad faith at the recent second DPRK-US summit talks,” the Korean Central News Agency added.

NFL Draft 2019: It’s all about defense
The first round of the 2019 NFL Draft saw a run on defensive players, with eight of the top 12 picks in Nashville coming from that side of the ball. After Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was taken first overall by the Arizona Cardinals, the San Francisco 49ers started a run of four straight front-seven players by taking Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa with the second overall pick — the highest draft slot for any Buckeye since left tackle Orlando Pace went No. 1 overall to the St. Louis Rams in 1997.
