(Reuters) – Sports Direct chief executive Mike Ashley has offered to underwrite a 150 million pound ($195.65 million) rights issue at Debenhams on condition that he is named CEO of the department store chain, the Financial Times reported on Saturday, citing two sources.

Debenhams secured 200 million pounds in new funds last week but warned shareholders that it still faced being wiped out unless it secured financial support from Sports Direct, which holds a near 30 percent stake.

Debenhams said Sports Direct needed to either make a firm offer for the group, underwrite a rights issue, or provide debt funding if it wanted to prevent Debenhams’ ownership falling into the hands of lenders.

In a letter to the Debenhams board dated April 5, Sports Direct said it would be willing to underwrite 150 million pounds in cash if Ashley was appointed as Debenhams’ new chief executive, the FT said.

Sports Direct was not immediately available for a comment and Debenhams declined to comment on the report.

Last year, Sports Direct bought department store chain House of Fraser out of administration and has been trying to wrest control of Debenhams for months.

Woolsey to Newsmax TV: Brennan's Trump Treason Claim Like '13th Chime of a Clock'

Former CIA director James Woolsey said unfounded claims by former members of the intelligence community that President Donald Trump is guilty of conspiring with the Russians is as perplexing as a clock chiming for a 13th time.

Woolsey was on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now" Wednesday night and was asked specifically about former CIA director John Brennan, who has insisted for two years that Trump colluded with the Russians. It was unveiled last weekend that special counsel Robert Mueller came to the opposite conclusion.

"I think it hurts generally when you accuse someone of something as serious as essentially aide and comfort to the enemy of the United States, and you don't have any evidence to that effect," Woolsey said. "And then it turns out, as it looks right now, they don't have evidence.

"That's like the 13th chime of a clock. It's bizarre in and of itself, and it calls into question everything from the same source."

Woolsey added that Trump's repeated criticisms of the late Sen. John McCain are also similar to a clock's extra tone, and then added that Americans should return to using facts as supporting evidence for discussion, rather than opinions.

"I wish we could have a more civil and fair-minded and evidence-based statement of people's objectives and policies, rather than the kind of thing we saw, falsely apparently, claiming treason," he said.

Exiled Thai leader is father of the bride ahead of election

Thailand's exiled former prime minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, won't know until Sunday whether people in his homeland are still fans of his politics, but he was happy as he hosted a wedding reception in Hong Kong for his youngest daughter.

Though ostensibly a family affair with a raft of VIP guests, the ceremony's timing Friday seemed to carry an implicit message to Thaksin's countrymen: Don't forget me and my political allies at Sunday's general election.

Thai Princess Ubolratana Mahidol, who made an abortive attempt last month to be a prime ministerial candidate for a political party allied to Thaksin, was a special guest. Although Thaksin was ousted by a 2006 military coup, the Pheu Thai Party of his loyalists is expected to capture the most seats in Sunday's polls.

Mitt Romney Defends John McCain Amid Trump Bashing

Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, came to the defense of the late Sen. John McCain on Tuesday after President Donald Trump launched another verbal attack at the former war hero and POW.

"I can't understand why the president would, once again, disparage a man as exemplary as my friend John McCain: heroic, courageous, patriotic, honorable, self-effacing, self-sacrificing, empathetic, and driven by duty to family, country, and God," Romney tweeted.

Trump and McCain feuded ever since the former called into question McCain's status as a war hero during the 2016 presidential campaign. McCain, who died last August after a battle with brain cancer, also cast the deciding vote that prevented the Senate from repealing Obamacare in 2017. It has been reported McCain gave the FBI a portion of the salacious, unverified dossier about Trump shortly before Trump took office.

Trump tweeted his displeasure at McCain over the weekend, and he followed that up with more bashing in front of the White House press corps Tuesday afternoon.

Though Trump veto likely, GOP’s mini mutiny on emergency declaration still a ‘big deal’: Byron York

The 12 Senate Republicans who joined Democrats on Thursday in blocking President Trump’s national emergency declaration might not be able to override what's expected to be Trump's first veto since taking office, but their show of opposition to the president remains significant, Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York argued.

The president's call for action at the U.S.-Mexico border went down in defeat, 59-41, as Republicans senators including Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Susan Collins and Mitt Romney said no to a plan that included spending about $8 billion on a border wall.

During Thursday's "Special Report" All-Star panel, York -- along with USA Today Washington bureau chief Susan Page and Washington Free Beacon editor-in-chief Matthew Continetti -- weighed in on the fallout from the vote and what's next for Trump’s proposal.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE FULL SHOW

York began by telling the panel that the White House feels “very confident” that Trump’s declaration will be upheld by the Supreme Court. He then pointed to the 12 Republican defectors who thought the declaration was an executive overreach.

“That is the biggest rejection, the biggest Republican rejection we’ve seen of the president so far in this presidency. That is a big deal even if the veto can’t be overturned,” York told the panel.

“That is the biggest rejection ... we’ve seen of the president so far in this presidency. That is a big deal even if the veto can’t be overturned.”

— Byron York, Washington Examiner chief political correspondent

York added that the border-wall construction can “go ahead” based on funding that has already been appropriated by Congress.

Page pointed out that of the 10 Republicans who are up for reelection in 2020, only one -- Collins of Maine -- voted against Trump, and that Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., who wrote an op-ed opposing the declaration, ultimately “flipped” and voted with the president.

Meanwhile, Continetti said “two issues” were taking place, one being the crisis at the southern border due to an influx of migrants and the other being whether President Trump has the constitutional authority to reallocate funds approved by the Congress.

“What I don’t understand are the Democrats, who deny the existence on the border, but at the same time hope that the courts uphold Trump’s effort to declare an emergency because they want to use the powers themselves for climate change and/or gun control," Continetti said. "That is being intellectually dishonest."

Congo’s Mai Mai militia attacks Ebola treatment center

March 9, 2019

GOMA, Congo (Reuters) – Armed Mai Mai militiamen attacked an Ebola treatment center at the heart of an outbreak of the disease in eastern Congo on Saturday, killing a policeman before being repelled by security forces, the local mayor said.

The center in Butembo was the same one torched by unknown assailants last week, an attack that prompted Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) to suspend activities in the area.

Aid workers have faced deep mistrust from locals in some areas as they work to contain the outbreak, which has become the worst in Democratic Republic of Congo’s history, killing close to 600 people so far.

Efforts to contain the virus have been further hampered by a plethora of armed groups operating in Congo’s lawless east.

World Health Organisation (WHO) President Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was due to visit the Butembo center on Saturday. A WHO spokesman said it was unclear if the visit would still happen.

Butembo major Sylvain Kanyamanda Mbusa said the Mai Mai militants were successfully repelled.

“Because of previous attacks, a security system was already in place and attackers were quickly confronted by the police officers guarding the …center,” he told Reuters.

The facility had resumed operations only a week ago and had been managed by the ministry of health in collaboration with the WHO and United Nations Children’s Fund.

The Mai Mai take their name from the word for “water” in a local Swahili dialect, because some of their fighters believe magic can turn flying bullets into water.

They comprise several armed bands that originally formed to resist two invasions by Rwandan forces in the late 1990s. They have since morphed into a variety of ethnic-based militia, smuggling networks and protection rackets.

One of the militiamen was wounded in Saturday’s attack and is in custody, Kanyamanda Mbusa said.

On Thursday, MSF accused the Congolese government of failing to contain the epidemic because of an overly militarised response that was alienating patients and their families.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

Lakewood police tweeted there were multiple fatalities but did not give a specific number. Six people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released, according to the paper.

Lanes in both directions were closed and expected to remain so into Friday morning.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
