Florida bill would allow illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses

A bill that was recently filed in Florida's House and Senate would allow people to get driver's licenses regardless of their immigration status.

Proposed in the Florida Legislature last month, the bill would let illegal immigrants use identifying documents like an unexpired foreign passport or a foreign birth certificate to get a license to drive.

FLORIDA BILL WOULD PUNISH PEOPLE WHO ABANDON DOGS DURING HURRICANES

Democratic Rep. Anna Eskamani, who sponsored the House bill, said she believes this legislation "helps to build that trust" with those who are considered "marginalized" in the state, and said it would make roads safer, according to the News Service of Florida.

“It doesn’t matter your immigration status. If you are on the roads, you should have access to a driver’s test and the ability to get car insurance," Democratic Sen. Jose Javier Rodriguez said.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition stated in a news release that allowing people without proper immigration documentation the ability to obtain a driver's license would "[cement] trust in law enforcement while protecting vulnerable communities."

The group says that Florida drivers would experience lower insurance premiums and safer roads, and a potential increase of $4 million in state revenue "if 75 percent of Floridians currently denied licenses due to their immigration status were able to receive a driver’s license."

Those seeking a license in Florida under current state law must prove they're U.S. citizens or resident aliens, the news service reported.

Calf. Gov. Newsom Can't Recall Why he Said Trump Should Quit

California Gov. Gavin Newsom says he can’t even remember why he called on President Donald Trump to resign.

“That was during a campaign,” the Democrat told The New York Times. “It’s just so indicative of this moment, I couldn't even tell you. It was 4,623 tweets ago.”

Newsom said he is now looking to have a productive relationship with the president.

“I hope so,” Newsom told the newspaper. “I don’t know. But I’m pursuing that because it’s just too damn important. And the risks are too great to bear.”

The Hill noted a review of Newsom’s comments from January 2018 showed he strongly had objected to Trump reportedly using a vile term to describe several African nations, as well on Haiti and El Salvador. Trump had denied eyewitness accounts that he had used the term.

The Times said Newsom had called the president “a joke and a racist” back then.

Amsterdam sex workers angry at red light district tours ban

The city of Amsterdam's latest attempt to rein in the nuisance of over-tourism by banning guided tours of the red light district has run into opposition from some of the people it is intended to protect: sex workers.

The Dutch capital plans to ban such tours, saying they are disrespectful and contribute to congestion in the narrow, canal-side streets where scantily-clad sex workers sit behind windows to attract customers.

The first step in the new policy was taken Monday night in the red light district, with tours banned from 7 p.m.

On a recent Friday night, the problem was clear to see: Tourists bathed in a red glow emanating from the windows and peep shows' neon lights were packed shoulder to shoulder as they shuffled through the alleys.

But sex workers' union Proud questions whether banning tours will reduce tourist numbers and argues that guides educate visitors and encourage them to behave more respectfully toward the women.

"It could also be that now there are no guides that people just wander into the area themselves and gawk at the women behind the window and take photos because there is no one anymore to inform them how to behave or what the rules of the game are in this area," said a sex worker who goes by the name of Velvet and is the advocacy coordinator for Proud. Velvet declined to give her real name, saying that because of the stigma attached to sex work, most sex workers use a working name or pseudonym to protect their privacy and safety.

Amsterdam's Prostitution Information Center, which is housed in the same building as Proud, offers its own red light district tours.

The total ban on guided tours, which is planned to come into full force on Jan. 1, is another step in the city's campaign to reduce the problems associated with over-tourism and part of a broader package of measures reining in tours in the city.

Bobien van Aalst of the Dutch tour guide association Guidor slammed the ban on tours, not just to the red light district but to other historic parts of the city. She said it means guides won't be able to explain to tourists where Rembrandt van Rijn painted one of his first famous works or where the painter's wife is buried.

"I mean it's like in Paris if you're forbidding (tours) to go to the Arc de Triomphe or the Eiffel Tower," she said.

City Hall says that more than 1,000 tour groups per week now operate around the Old Church Square in the heart of the red light district.

"Yeah, there's really over-tourism there — too crowded. I mean there were evenings where ... residents basically couldn't leave their homes anymore because the alleys were blocked," the city's deputy mayor, Udo Kock, told The Associated Press.

People who work in Amsterdam's sex industry question whether there are more tourists, or whether similar numbers are squeezing into a red light district that has shrunk in recent years as hundreds of the sex workers' windows have been shuttered in an attempt to diversify the narrow streets.

Kock acknowledges that not everybody is happy, but says many others are pleased that the city is tackling the tours.

The red light district is a tourist magnet, especially after dark, with crowds of people waiting to get into sex shows and visiting the Red Light Secrets Museum of Prostitution, where you can experience the windows from a sex worker's perspective by sitting on a stool in front of a "window" onto which images are projected of men walking past and peering in.

The museum's manager, Natascha Flipsen, agrees that guided tours help educate the visitors not just about the history of the centuries-old red light district, but also about how to treat the women who work there with respect.

And she says that tourism is good for the business.

For tourists, "this is like the once in a lifetime experience, so they visit the sex work as well of course," Flipsen said.

2 illegal immigrants killed in crash in New Mexico after chase involving Border Patrol; 9 apprehended

A high-speed chase in southern New Mexico ended in a crash that left 2 illegal immigrants dead on Saturday, officials said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a news release that Border Patrol agents from the El Paso sector were responding to a possible smuggling incident involving a minivan carrying 11 people around 8 p.m. on Highway 9 between Columbus and Santa Teresa, N.M. when the chase began.

After the driver failed to yield to emergency lights and sirens, the agency said Border Patrol agents deployed tire-deflation spikes on the roadway.

The minivan swerved to avoid the device but ended up rolling over and ejecting two people from the vehicle. Five other passengers inside the van were injured in the crash and were transported to an area hospital.

ARIZONA WOMAN ARRESTED, ACCUSED OF LEADING BORDER PATROL AGENTS IN A CAR CHASE WITH ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS IN HER TRUNK: OFFICIALS

The two people thrown from the minivan, both illegal immigrants, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to CBP.

The crash drew the response of Border Patrol emergency medical technicians and a U.S. Coast Guard medical team assigned to the Santa Teresa Station.

Authorities identified the driver as a 27-year-old man who is a U.S. citizen. Officials said that identifies of those deceased will be withheld pending notification of family members.

US GOVERNMENT SAYS IT COULD TAKE TWO YEARS TO IDENTIFY FAMILIES SEPARATED AT BORDER

The deadly crash in New Mexico was only the latest high-speed chase involving the Border Patrol and vehicles carrying people over the U.S. border illegally.

In November, three people were killed and eight were injured after a high-speed chase in California involving a pickup truck that went over 100 mph before agents deployed a spike strip and the vehicle crashed off an interstate.

Another high-speed chase with the agency in June 2018 ended when an SUV carrying illegal immigrants crashed, ejecting 12 people -- five of whom were killed -- near the Texas-Mexico border. That chased also topped 100 mph, and the driver was also an American citizen.

Bernie Sanders’ 2020 Campaign Responds To Alleged FEC Violation By Calling Trump A Racist

William Davis | Contributor

An FEC complaint has been filed against Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, alleging that the campaign is violating federal election law by employing an illegal immigrant.

The complaint was first obtained by the Washington Free Beacon and mentions Sanders’ deputy national press secretary, Maria Belen Sisa.

Sisa is an illegal immigrant from Argentina living in the United States under protections from the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) that is currently tied up in court. (RELATED: New Spokeswoman For Sen. Bernie Sanders Is An Illegal Immigrant)

The complaint filed by the Free Beacon argues that “Sen. Sanders and Bernie 2020 is permitting a foreign national, Ms. Sisa, to serve in an advisory position which allows her to directly or indirectly participate in the decision-making process of persons with regard to election-related activities in violation of FEC regulations.”

Sanders’ campaign manager Faiz Shakir told The Daily Caller that Sanders plans to continue to fight for permanent protections for DACA recipients while also accusing President Donald Trump of racism. (RELATED: Here’s A List Of Hoax ‘Hate Crimes’ In The Trump Era)

“Unlike the Trump administration, President Sanders will not only act to protect DACA recipients and their community, he will ensure this campaign seeks out their voices and treats them with respect,” Shakit said. “Now more than ever, we need leadership that brings us together and stands up to Trump’s racist and bigoted attempts to divide us up.”

Sanders previously accused Trump of being a “racist, a sexist, a homophobe [and] a xenophobe” in his campaign announcement last month.

England captain Kane wants to end career as NFL kicker

March 28, 2019

(Reuters) – England captain Harry Kane has his heart set on ending his playing career in the United States kicking field goals for a team in the National Football League (NFL).

Kane, the top scorer at last year’s FIFA World Cup, has long been an admirer of American football and believes successfully switching sports late in his career will help him go down in history as one of the greatest sportsmen of all time.

The path from European football to the United States is a well-traveled one, with the likes of David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard all ending up in America’s top soccer league (MLS), but Kane wants to blaze his own trail.

“(The desire to play in the NFL) is real,” the Tottenham Hotspur striker told ESPN in an interview. “(It’s) something that in 10 or 12 years I definitely want to try.

“If you play in the Premier League and the World Cup and you then play in the NFL, would you then be considered one of the greatest sportsmen ever?

“It goes back to that drive to be the best. Even if I download a game on my phone, can I be the best in the world?”

Kane is a fan of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and was at the Super Bowl this year, watching from the stands as the 41-year-old won his sixth title. [nL5N1ZZ06M]

“We’ve had a similar path being doubted when we were younger. Maybe not being the best athletes as kids,” Kane added. “Not many people thought he’d become that good or even play in the NFL and he went on to become the best ever.

“At the time, it gave me a real boost to say, look, anything is possible. If you have that self-belief and that drive and that hunger, you can do it.”

WATCH: Deputy Scott Peterson Confronted After Cowering During Parkland Massacre

Spread the love

Conservative high school activist and Parkland survivor Kyle Kashuv confronted former Broward County Sheriff’s Deputy Scot Peterson on Tuesday for hiding outside of Stoneman Douglas High School during the 2017 Parkland high school massacre in South Florida.

“Can you explain to me why seventeen people died in our school?” said Kashuv. “You did absolutely nothing.”

Peterson did not respond when confronted because as everyone knows, he is a coward.

“That was your job…you were just standing there…you let those kids die,” Kashuv continued. “You were the one who was supposed to go inside.”

SEOUL (Reuters) – K-pop and drama star Park Yu-chun was arrested on Friday on charges of buying and using illegal drugs, a court said, the latest in a series of scandals to hit the South Korean entertainment business.

Suwon District Court approved the arrest warrant for Park, 32, due to concerns over possible destruction of evidence and flight risk, a court spokesman told Reuters.

Park is suspected of having bought about 1.5 grams of methamphetamine with his former girlfriend earlier this year and using the drug around five times, an official at the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency said.

Park has denied wrongdoing, saying he had never taken drugs, and he again denied the charges in court, Yonhap news agency said.

Park’s contract with his management agency had been canceled and he would leave the entertainment industry, Park’s management agency, C-JeS Entertainment, said on Wednesday.

Park was a member of boyband TVXQ between 2003 and 2009 before leaving the group with two other members, forming the group JYJ.

A scandal involving sex tapes, prostitutes and secret chat about rape led at least four other K-pop stars to quit the industry earlier this year.

The cases sparked a nationwide drugs bust and investigations into tax evasion and police collusion at night clubs and other nightlife spots.

The company said it now expects its 2019 adjusted profit to be between $4.00 per share and $6.00 per share.

Analysts on average had expected 2019 earnings of $5.63 per share, according to Refinitiv data.

The No. 1 U.S. airline by passenger traffic said net income rose to $185 million, or 41 cents per share, in the first quarter ended March 31, from $159 million, or 34 cents per share, a year earlier.

Total operating revenue rose 2 percent to $10.58 billion.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Reuters) – Four years ago, Donald Trump campaigned in small towns like Marshalltown, Iowa, vowing to restore economic prosperity to the U.S. heartland.

In his bid to replace Trump in the White House, Pete Buttigieg is taking a similar tack. The difference, he says, is that he can point to a model of success: South Bend, Indiana, the revitalized city where he has been mayor since 2012.

The Democratic presidential contender has vaulted to the congested field’s top tier in recent weeks, drawing media and donor attention for his youth, history-making status as the first openly gay major presidential candidate and a resume that includes military service in Afghanistan.

But Buttigieg’s main argument for his candidacy is that he is a turnaround artist in the mold of Trump, although the Democrat does not expressly invoke the comparison with the Republican president.

“I’m not going around saying we’ve fixed every problem we’ve got,” Buttigieg, 37, said after a house party with voters in Marshalltown. “But I’m proud of what we have done together, and I think it’s a very powerful story.”

Critics argue improving the fortunes of a Midwestern city of 100,000 people does not qualify Buttigieg, who has never held national office, for the presidency of a country of 330 million. Others say South Bend still has pockets of despair and that minorities, in particular, have failed to benefit from its growth.

Buttigieg has told crowds in Iowa and elsewhere that his experience in reviving a struggling Rust Belt community allows him to make a case to voters that other Democratic candidates cannot. That may give him the means to win back some of the disaffected Democratic voters who turned their backs on Hillary Clinton in 2016 to vote for Trump.

Watching Buttigieg at a union hall in Des Moines last week, Rick Ryan, 45, a member of the United Steelworkers, lamented how many of his fellow union workers voted for Trump. The president turned in the best performance by a Republican among union households since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

Ryan said he hoped someone like Buttigieg could return them to the Democratic fold.

“He’s aware of the decline in the labor force in America, not just in Indiana or Des Moines or anywhere else,” Ryan said. “Jobs are going overseas. We need a find to way to bring that back.”

Randy Tucker, 56, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, said Trump appealed to union members “desperate for somebody to reach out to them, to help them, to listen to their voice.”

Buttigieg could do the same, he said. “In my heart right now, he’s No. 1.”

PAST VS. FUTURE

Buttigieg stresses a key difference in his and Trump’s approaches.

Trump, he tells crowds, is mired in the past, promising to rebuild the 20th century industrial economy. Buttigieg argues the pledge is misleading and unrealistic.

Buttigieg says his focus is on the future, and he often talks about what the country might look like decades from now.

“The only way that we can cultivate what makes America great is to look to the future and not be afraid of it,” Buttigieg said in Marshalltown.

Buttigieg knows his sexual preference may be a barrier to winning some blue-collar voters. But he notes that after he came out as gay in 2015, he won a second term as mayor with 80 percent of the vote in conservative Indiana.

Earlier this month, he announced his presidential bid at the hulking plant in South Bend that stopped making Studebaker autos more than 50 years ago. After lying dormant for decades, the building is being transformed into a high-tech hub after Buttigieg and other city leaders realized it would never again attract a large-scale industrial company.

“That building sat as a powerful reminder. We hoped we would get back that major employer that would fix our economy,” said Jeff Rea, president of the regional Chamber of Commerce.

Buttigieg is praised locally for spurring more than $100 million in downtown investment. During his two terms, unemployment has fallen to 4.1 percent from 11.8 percent.

But a study released in 2017 by the nonprofit group Prosperity Now said not all of the city’s residents had shared in its rebound. The median income for African-Americans remained half that of whites, while the unemployment rate for blacks was double.

Regina Williams-Preston, a city councilor running to replace Buttigieg as mayor, credits him for the revitalized downtown. But she said he had a “blind spot” when it came to focusing on troubled neighborhoods like the one she represents and only grew more engaged after community pressure.

“He understands it now,” she said. “The next step is figuring out how to open the doors of opportunity for everyone.”

‘ONE OF US’

Trump touts the fact that the United States added almost 300,000 manufacturing jobs last year as evidence he made good on his promise to restore the industrial sector. But that growth still left the country with fewer manufacturing jobs than in 2008.

The robust U.S. economy is likely the president’s greatest asset in his re-election bid, particularly in states he carried in 2016 such as Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. He won Buttigieg’s home state by 19 points over Clinton in 2016.

Sean Bagniewski, chairman of the Democratic Party in Polk County, Iowa, said Buttigieg would be well positioned to compete with Trump in the Midwest.

“People love the fact that he’s a mayor,” said Bagniewski, who has not endorsed a candidate in the nominating contest. “If you can talk about a positive future, and if you actually have experience that can do it, that’s a compelling vision in Iowa.”

Nan Whaley, the mayor of Dayton, Ohio, which faces many of the same challenges as South Bend, agreed.

“He’s one of us,” Whaley said. “That helps.”

MONTREAL/OTTAWA (Reuters) – Rising waters were prompting further evacuations in central Canada on Thursday, with the mayor of the country’s capital, Ottawa, declaring a state of emergency and Quebec authorities warning that a hydroelectric dam was at risk of breaking.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson declared the emergency in response to rising water levels along the Ottawa River and weather forecasts that called for significant rainfall on Friday.

In a statement on Twitter, Watson asked for help from the Ontario provincial government and the country’s military.

He warned that “flood levels are currently forecasted to exceed the levels that caused significant damage to numerous properties in the city of Ottawa in 2017.”

Spring flooding had killed one person and forced more than 900 people from their homes in Canada’s Quebec province as of 1 p.m. on Thursday, according to a government website.

Ottawa has received 80 requests for service related to potential flooding such as sandbagging, a city spokeswoman said.

The prospect of more rain over the next 24 to 48 hours triggered concerns on Thursday that the hydroelectric dam at Bell Falls in the western part of Quebec could be at risk of failing because of rising water levels.

Quebec’s provincial police said 250 people were protectively removed from homes in the area as of late afternoon in case the dam on the Rouge River breaks.

The dam is now at its full flow capacity of 980 cubic meters per second of water, said Francis Labbé, a spokesman for the province’s state-owned utility, Hydro Quebec. He said Hydro Quebec expected the flow could rise to 1,200 cubic meters per second of water over the next two days.

“We have to take the worst-case scenario into consideration, since we`re already at the maximum capacity,” Labbé said by phone.

The dam is part of a power station that no longer produces electricity, but is regularly inspected by Hydro Quebec, he said.

BELFAST (Reuters) – Detectives investigating the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Northern Ireland last week suspect the gunman who shot her dead is in his late teens as they made a further appeal to the local community who they believe know his identity.

McKee’s killing by an Irish nationalist militant during a riot in Londonderry has sparked outrage in the province where a 1998 peace deal mostly ended three decades of sectarian violence that cost the lives of some 3,600 people.

The New IRA, one of a small number of groups that oppose the peace accord, has said one of its members shot the 29-year-old reporter dead in the Creggan area of the city on Thursday when opening fire on police during a riot McKee was watching.

The killing, which followed a large car bomb in Londonderry in January that police also blamed on the New IRA, has raised fears that small marginalized militant groups are exploiting a political vacuum in the province and tensions caused by Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

Police released footage on Friday of immediately before and after the shooting showing three men who were involved in the rioting and identified one as the gunman who they believe is in his late teens.

“I believe that the information that can help us to bring those responsible for her murder to justice lies within the community. I need the public to tell me who he is,” Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy told reporters.

Murphy said those involved in the disorder on the night were teenagers or in their early 20s, and that about 100 people were on the ground watching the trouble as it unfolded.

He added that police believed the gun used in the attack was of a similar caliber to those used before in paramilitary type attacks in Creggan.

“I recognize that people living in Creagan may find it’s difficult to come forward to speak to police. Today, I want to provide a personal reassurance that we are able to deal with those issues sensitively,” Murphy said, echoing similar appeals in recent days.
