February 26, 2019

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – Swedbank said on Tuesday it had hired external forensic auditors to investigate information in a media report linking the bank to a Baltic money laundering scandal, replacing recently appointed audit firm EY.

Sweden’s public broadcaster alleged last week that money laundering could have occurred in relation to at least 40 billion crowns ($4.3 bln) transferred between Baltic accounts at Swedbank and Danske Bank between 2007 and 2015.

Following the report the Swedish bank appointed EY to analyze material and conduct an external investigation into the claims.

“To secure that the external investigation meets necessary demands Swedbank has today decided to replace EY with Forensic Risk Alliance (FRA),” it said in a statement.

British-based FRA specializes in forensic accounting, data analytics and financial investigations and has experience in regulatory probes, anti-money laundering and terror financing cases.

“We have noticed some criticism in the media and since we think it is very important that the conclusions, which will come from the external investigation, should not be questioned, we have chosen to replace the investigator,” Swedbank spokesman Gabriel Franke Rodau said.

Danske is being investigated in five countries over some 200 billion euros of suspicious payments from Russia, ex-Soviet states and elsewhere that were found to have flowed through its Estonian branch.

Swedbank said FRA would report the results of the external investigation to the CEO and board by its March 28 annual general meeting.

Financial regulators in Sweden and Estonia have opened a joint investigation following the Swedish media report.

Female Navy Linguist Killed in Syria to Be Memorialized

The name of Shannon Kent, a sailor killed in Syria in January, will be added to the National Cryptological Memorial – the third woman and first Navy linguist enshrined among military and civilian code-makers and code-breakers killed in the line of duty, Stars and Stripes reported.

The military news outlet reported the late senior chief petty officer's name will be unveiled as the 177th entry on the black granite memorial Feb. 28 near the National Security Agency's headquarters complex at Fort Meade, Maryland.

Kent's death, less than two months into her fifth combat deployment, has highlighted the role of women like her supporting elite outfits on hushed front line missions against insurgents and terrorists, Stars and Stripes reported.

The 35-year-old mother of two and cancer survivor, who spoke seven languages and was considered a "badass" by many of her peers, spent much of her career working alongside special operations troops, the outlet reported.

A native of Pine Plains, New York, whose state police officer father and firefighter uncle had responded to the World Trade Center attack in New York City, Kent was motivated to join the Navy in late 2003 in part by the 9/11 attacks. She had studied Arabic at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, graduating in 2005.

Kent was the first female U.S. service member killed in Syria since U.S. forces began fighting there against ISIS in late 2014. She is to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, the outlet reported.

French Police Ambushed by Fireworks Gang

French police officers were injured when their vehicle was attacked by a gang shooting fireworks at close range, according to local media.

The patrol was passing through a neighborhood in Yvelines when it was ambushed by approximately six suspects.

Video of the siege was shared to social media, indicating it may have been premeditated, Actu17 reports.

"The neighborhood was quiet when around 22:20, a municipal police car that passed Place des Violettes and rue des Frères Tissier in Carrières-sous-Poissy, was the target of fireworks fire by half a dozen individuals. One of the attackers suddenly approached the vehicle to use his mortar against the police."

The driver of the vehicle can be seen losing control and nearly crashing into parked cars at the onset of the siege before speeding off as the assailants give chase.

Two officers reportedly sustained burns to the head and arms after at least one of the explosives entered the vehicle, and all three officers involved are suffering from tinnitus.

Additional patrols were deployed to the neighborhood, but none of the suspects could be located and no arrests were made.

Europe appears lost as reports emerge that German police are actually covering up migrant crimes to push the narrative that migrants are never violent or break the law and should be welcomed with open arms.

Charles Manson ex-lover calls him ‘the closest thing to Jesus’

A former paramour of notorious cult leader Charles Manson has spoken out about her time as a member of his infamous "family," saying she thought Manson was "the closest thing to Jesus" and his devotees "listened to everything he said like it was gospel."

Catherine Share, 76, told the Australian TV show "60 Minutes" that she joined Manson at the cult's ranch north of Los Angeles in 1969, months before they carried out a string of notorious murders -- with pregnant actress Sharon Tate among the victims -- that shocked the world and plunged Southern California into fear.

"We would do anything for each other to the point where we die for each other," Share said of Manson's hold over his group of female followers. "It just had to be done. Charlie is always right."

Share had no role in the murders of Tate, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Stephen Parent, and Leno and Rosemary LaBianca -- for which Manson and four "family" members were convicted and sentenced to death, and maintained she would rather have died than taken part in them.

"I might have been killed," she said. "I would have been willing to be killed rather than do it. It’s just that I was older and more of a human and less susceptible."

However, Share said that all those involved in the killings who are still in prison should be released.

"They’ve just done the work on themselves for years and years and years. They’re just not the same people they were when they were 20 and 18 at all," she said, adding "It's time."

Manson died in 2017 while serving a life sentenced after California invalidated its death penalty statute in 1972. Susan Atkins, who was convicted in the Tate-LaBianca murders along with Manson, died in 2009. Patricia Krenwinkel, Leslie Van Houten (who was convicted of her role in the LaBianca murders) and Charles "Tex" Watson (who was convicted in a separate trial for his role in the Tate-LaBianca murders) have remained in prison.

Earlier this year, the California Board of Parole Hearings recommended for a third time that the 69-year-old Van Houten be granted parole. Former California Gov. Jerry Brown had blocked Van Houten's release on two separate occasions after determining that she had laid too much blame on Manson for her role in the killing. Van Houten is the second-longest incarcerated female inmate in California's prison system, trailing only fellow "family" member Krenwinkel.

California's new governor, Gavin Newsom, is to decide whether Van Houten should be granted parole at the end of a 150-day review process.

Ex-Chief of Staff Kelly Forced Ousted Secret Service Chief on Trump

Official Washington and much of the national press was in an uproar on Monday afternoon following the President’s announcement that Secret Service Director Randolph “Tex” Alles was being replaced.

Little mentioned in all of the debate over whether Alles was fired or (as he was claiming late in the afternoon) the director is leaving on his own is that his appointment was virtually forced on Trump in April 2017 by then-Secretary of Homeland Security (and future White House Chief of Staff) John Kelly.

“At one point, Kelly threatened he would resign unless Trump appointed Alles,” Ron Kessler, author of the critically acclaimed book “The Trump White House," told Newsmax.

Trump, in fact, had no intention of appointing Alles, a retired Marine Corps major general and old friend of fellow marine Kelly’s.  The President’s preference was George Mulligan, a veteran agent and chief operating officer of the Secret Service.

Moreover, as Kessler wrote in his book, “[when] he interviewed Alles, Trump was not impressed.  Alles volunteered that he knew next to nothing about the Secret Service.  Apparently, it was too much trouble to read books and articles about the agency or to check out the Secret Service website before meeting with the President.”

Of his two year stint at the helm of the Secret Service, Kessler wrote that its agents “are also unimpressed by Alles and largely ignore him.  …Apparently, co-opted by Secret Service management, Alles proved to be the exact opposite of what was needed to reform the Secret Service.”

In his book, Kessler concluded that “nothing has changed within the Secret Service since the party-crashing Salahis went prancing into the White House state dinner back in 2009, or since I broke the Secret Service prostitution scandal in 2012….."

Alles, he wrote flatly, “not only retained that same senior management that produced so many scandals, he has done nothing to change the agency’s culture that has led to those scandals and the low morale that results in a shockingly high turnover rate.”

Nevertheless, “General Kelly wanted [Alles] in the worst way, and nobody else wanted him,” former White House Counselor Steve Bannon told Kessler.

Cory Booker calls warnings about Green New Deal price tag a ‘lie’

Democratic presidential candidate Cory Booker, campaigning in New Hampshire on Monday, said it’s a “lie” for critics to say the Green New Deal is too expensive to implement.

GREEN NEW DEAL, 'MEDICARE-FOR-ALL' DRAW FRESH SCRUTINY FROM OTHER 2020 DEMS

“This is the lie that’s going on right now,” Booker told Fox News in Nashua, N.H., as he campaigned in the first-in-the-nation primary state.

The New Jersey senator was asked about the costs of the Green New Deal, which is supported by New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives and aims to implement a range of big-government programs while pursuing a level of "net-zero greenhouse gas emissions" -- essentially, a total economic transformation toward clean energy that, among other points, includes building upgrades across the country.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported it cost nearly $2,000 per apartment for the New York City Housing Authority to switch to LED lighting, which lasts longer and consumes less energy than incandescent bulbs. Asked about that report, Booker said it’s possible to “revive your economy, and create a bold green future,” citing his experience as mayor of Newark, N.J.

“We environmentally retrofitted our buildings. Saves taxpayers money, created jobs for our community and lowered our carbon footprint,” Booker said.

He added, “This lie that’s being put out – that somehow being green and responsible with the environment means you have to hurt the economy – a lie.”

WHAT IS THE GREEN NEW DEAL? A LOOK AT THE ECONOMIC AND CLIMATE CONCEPT PUSHED BY PROGRESSIVES

The Green New Deal is a sweeping proposal designed to tackle income inequality and climate change at the same time. It’s modeled after President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal package of public works programs and projects created to help the economy during the Great Depression -- but in many ways goes much further.

The rollout itself was muddled by the release of Ocasio-Cortez documents that, among other things, promised economic security even for those "unwilling" to work.

The plan itself aims to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing and agriculture and dramatically expand energy sources to meet 100 percent of power demand through renewable sources. The proposal also calls for a job-guarantee program and universal health care, among other things.

Republican critics have vehemently pushed back against the proposal, pointing in part to the price tag – estimated to be about $7 trillion. Republicans have also decried the job guarantee idea, calling it a “deeply flawed policy” that would be detrimental to small businesses.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

Lakewood police tweeted there were multiple fatalities but did not give a specific number. Six people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released, according to the paper.

Lanes in both directions were closed and expected to remain so into Friday morning.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
