A look at sites hit by Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka

The Easter Sunday bombings were Sri Lanka's deadliest violence since the country's civil war ended a decade ago. The nine blasts hit mainly churches and luxury hotels in Colombo, the capital. A look at the sites targeted:

___

CHURCHES

St. Anthony's Shrine is a Roman Catholic church in the Kochchikade suburb of Colombo and is one of the country's best-known churches. Its roots reach to the 18th century Dutch colonial period, when Catholicism was forbidden and priests held services in secret. Local beliefs say the church's founder, disguised as a merchant, helped a seaside fishing community by praying to stop the sea from eroding their village. The church was later built near the site.

St. Sebastian's Church: This Catholic church is in Negombo, a largely Catholic town north of Colombo. Built in the Gothic style, it was patterned on the Reims Cathedral in France and was completed in the 1940s.

Zion Church: This church is in the eastern coastal city of Batticaloa. It was founded in the 1970s.

___

HOTELS

The Shangri-La Hotel: This towering, luxurious hotel is near Colombo's main business district and is just a few steps from the sea. It has 500 guest rooms and suites and 41 serviced apartments.

The Kingsbury Colombo Hotel: This luxury hotel is in Colombo's city center, a few minutes' walk from the Shangri-La. It has 229 rooms.

The Cinnamon Grand Colombo hotel: This hotel is about a mile (2 kilometers) from the Kingsbury and near the sea in a bustling business district. It has 483 rooms and 18 suites.

Landfill searched where missing Colorado mom Kelsey Berreth’s remains are believed to be located

Officials on Tuesday began combing through a Colorado landfill where they hope to find the charred remains of Kelsey Berreth three months after she was allegedly killed by her fiancé.

Detectives and law enforcement officials will begin searching Midway Landfill in Fountain on Tuesday in hopes of finding Berreth’s remains and “any additional evidence” linked to the 29-year-old death, Woodland Park police said in a news release Friday.

“I want to express my gratitude to Waste Management for working so closely with our investigators as we continue our efforts to locate Kelsey,” Woodland Park Police Chief Miles De Young said. “Additionally, I extend my deep appreciation to the community and our fellow law enforcement agencies for their unwavering support as we tirelessly investigate Kelsey’s case.”

Patrick Frazee leaves the Teller County District Court in Cripple Creek, Colo. Colorado police say they plan to search a landfill for the remains of a woman whose fiance is charged with her murder.

KELSEY BERRETH CASE: PATRICK FRAZEE TO STAND TRIAL FOR MURDERING COLORADO MOM, JUDGE RULES

Officials said a crew of 10 people is expected to work for eight hours a day searching through trash for the woman’s remains. The search is likely to take about 35 days, but could last up to 80 days, KDVR reported.

It’s unclear what led police to search the site, which is about 40 miles from Berreth’s home.

Berreth was last seen alive on Thanksgiving Day entering a Safeway supermarket with her 1-year-old daughter, Kaylee, who she shared custody of with fiancé Patrick Frazee. Authorities began searching for the flight instructor on Dec. 2 after Berreth’s mother reported her missing.

Frazee, 32, was later arrested and charged with murder and solicitation to commit murder after investigators said they uncovered evidence that indicated he killed the mother of his child.

Court testimony during a Tuesday hearing revealed Frazee's girlfriend, Krystal Lee Kenney, told police he repeatedly asked her to kill Berreth. Investigators told a judge Kenney told police Frazee admitted beating Berreth to death with a baseball bat.

NURSE ADMITS TO TAKING MISSING COLORADO MOM KELSEY BERRETH'S CELLPHONE TO THWART INVESTIGATION

Kenney, a former nurse from Idaho, said Frazee then demanded she come to Colorado and clean up blood spattered on the floor, walls and furniture of Berreth’s home. She recalled to police watching Frazee burn Berreth’s body on his property.

Krystal Jean Lee Kenney, 32, has pleaded guilty, Friday, Feb. 8, 2019, to a charge that she tampered with evidence connected to the high-profile disappearance of a Colorado woman.

She added that Frazee planned to dump the charred body in a dump or river.

Authorities’ began looking for clues into Berreth’s disappearance after her phone pinged from Gooding, Idaho just days after she vanished.

Kenney pleaded guilty to evidence tampering and admitted to moving Berreth’s cellphone. Berreth’s parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit claiming that Frazee killed their daughter as part of a custody battle.

Exclusive: SK Innovation in talks to set up EV battery JVs with Volkswagen, China partners

By Joseph White, Hyunjoo Jin and Heekyong Yang

SEOUL (Reuters) – SK Innovation Co Ltd is in talks to set up separate battery-making joint ventures with Volkswagen AG and Chinese partners, as the South Korean petrochemicals producer aggressively expands its involvement in electric vehicles (EVs).

The company confirmed talks with Germany’s Volkswagen for the first time, telling Reuters the pair were discussing building a factory together. It also said it was on the cusp of agreeing to build a plant in China with undisclosed partners.

The talks come as EV battery makers boost capacity to cope with fast-growing demand, as automakers race to develop vehicles powered by means other than petrol to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations worldwide.

SK Innovation, South Korea’s biggest oil refiner, is a latecomer to a market led by compatriots LG Chem Ltd and Samsung SDI Co Ltd plus Japan’s Panasonic Corp. Since starting mass production in 2012, customers have included Germany’s Daimler AG as well as Volkswagen.

“Compared with rivals, we’ve been matching or exceeding investment in the area since last year,” YS Yoon, president of SK Innovation’s battery business, said in an interview. “We tried to find the right moment for massive investment.”

The broader SK Group, South Korea’s third-biggest conglomerate, has increased focus on EV batteries as demand slows at memory chip-making unit SK Hynix Inc.

By 2022, SK Innovation plans to spend 4.51 trillion won ($3.95 billion) to boost EV battery capacity. Last month, it broke ground on a $1.7 billion plant in the United States to primarily supply lithium-ion battery cells to Volkswagen. It is also building two factories in Hungary.

“Our strategy is to keep up with technological advancement by having relationships with some of our key customers,” Yoon said, adding that “nothing has been decided” regarding a JV with Volkswagen.

The JV would be the first in which Volkswagen, one of the world’s biggest automakers, will be co-investing in battery production, similar to the joint battery investment of Panasonic and U.S. EV maker Tesla Inc, analysts said.

“We are considering an investment in a battery manufacturer in order to reinforce our electrification offensive and build up the necessary know-how,” Volkswagen said in a statement to Reuters.

In March, Volkswagen Chief Executive Herbert Diess said the automaker was “taking a close look at possible participation in battery cell manufacturing facilities in Europe of our own.”

Volkswagen’s other suppliers include LG Chem, Samsung SDI and China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd.

“There are so many battery requirements from Volkswagen,” Yoon said. “So I think it is natural for Volkswagen to have multiple suppliers even if it has joint ventures with some.”

SECOND CHINA PLANT

Separately, SK Innovation plans to soon sign a deal to build its second EV battery factory in China, the world’s biggest EV market, Yoon said, without identifying the local partners.

The firm broke ground in August on its first Chinese plant under a joint venture with Beijing Electronics Holding Co Ltd and BAIC Motor Corp Ltd, with investment reaching 5 billion yuan ($744.30 million) by 2020.

SK Innovation had aimed to begin construction in 2016, but postponed as EVs equipped with Korean batteries were not included on a government list of EVs eligible for subsidies.

“We hope China’s market opens up in 2021” when the subsidies are phased out, Jay Rhee, SK Innovation’s head of battery research and development, said in a separate interview.

COBALT CULL

Meanwhile, SK Innovation is in the industry-wide race to reduce batteries’ cobalt content, with Panasonic in May saying it was working on a cobalt-free battery. The mineral is mined in harsh conditions and subject to significant price fluctuation.

The firm plans to start production of batteries containing 5 percent cobalt in 2022 from 10 percent at present, Rhee said.

Cobalt is primarily mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but SK Innovation is also sourcing cobalt from Australia and extracting the mineral from waste batteries, Yoon said.

“I expect we won’t need to secure fresh cobalt after 2025,” Yoon said.

The Boy Crisis: The Statistics Tell Us That American Boys Are Falling Behind In Just About Every Area

As a society we appear to be really dropping the ball, because the numbers indicate that American boys are deeply struggling in just about every area.

Many professionals are pointing to a “crisis of fatherhood” as one of the key factors, and as I pointed out the other day, approximately a third of all U.S. children are now being raised in a home without a father.  Of course this negatively affects our girls as well, but there is something about that lack of a masculine role model that seems to particularly hurt boys.  However, the lack of a traditional family structure cannot explain all of the numbers that I am about to share with you.  As you will see, we are facing a crisis that will not easily be solved.

Warren Farrell, the co-author of a new book entitled “The Boy Crisis: Why Our Boys Are Struggling and What We Can Do About It”, has identified three key areas that he is most concerned about.

The first is education

It is a crisis of education. Worldwide, 60% of the students who achieve less than the baseline level of proficiency in any of the three core subjects of the Program for the International Assessment are boys. Even boys’ IQs are dropping.

Today, girls are educationally outperforming boys in elementary school, middle school and high school.

Gillette will use Amy Schumer as the spokesmodel for their “Venus” line of feminine razors. Famed memester Carpe Donktum joins Owen to discuss the insanity of Gillettes social justice agenda.

And by the time college rolls around, the performance gap is absolutely enormous.  In fact, females have earned at least 57 percent of all bachelor’s degrees in the United States for 18 years in a row.

The second area Farrell is deeply concerned about is mental health

It is a crisis of mental health. Boys’ suicide rate goes from only slightly more than girls before age 14 to three times that of girls’ between 15 and 19, to 4 1/2 times that of girls between 20 and 24. Mass shooters, prisoners and Islamic State terrorism recruits are at least 90% male.

In addition to all of that, males commit 90 percent of all homicides in the United States, and men lead women by a very wide margin in just about every other violent crime category as well.

This is one area where the lack of a father in the home really seems to make a difference.  According to one very alarming study, when there is a 1 percent increase in fatherlessness in a neighborhood, on average it leads to a 3 percent rise in adolescent violence.

Sadly, it appears that our young people are steadily becoming unhappier over time.  The following numbers come from the Free Beacon

Recent years have seen a rise in Americans 12 to 25 saying they are unhappy. Since 2012, the proportion of 8th and 10th graders who tell the Monitoring the Future survey that they felt unhappy has crept up from 13 percent to 18 percent. In roughly the same time, the proportion of 18- to 25-year-olds who say they are unhappy has risen from 11 to 17 percent, according to the General Social Survey.

And as I pointed out in one recent article, other studies have found a clear link between unhappiness and social media use.

The Internet can be used for great good, but it can also be heavily toxic, and today many of our young people are “plugged in” almost constantly

Essentially 100 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds are on social media. Fifty-four percent think they spend too much time on their cellphone; 72 percent of teens say their phone is sometimes the first thing they look at upon waking up.

This, Twenge argues in her book iGen, explains a lot about why they are unhappy. Using several national surveys, Twenge argues that screen-using activities are linked to indicators of depression and unhappiness. For example, she finds that kids using devices more than three hours a day are 30 percent more likely to have an indicator of suicidality.

The third major area that Farrell is deeply concerned about is physical health

It is a crisis of physical health. American men’s life expectancy has decreased two-tenths of a year even as American women’s has remained the same. Boys and men are dying earlier in 14 out of 15 of the leading causes of death.

Overall, men are living 4.9 years less than women in the United States.

One thing that would help would be to encourage our young men to avoid engaging in extremely risky behavior.  Young males tend to get hooked on drugs and alcohol at much higher rates than young females, and one recent study found that an alarming percentage of our boys are having sex before they reach the age of 13.  The following comes from CBS News

Talking to your children about sex can be awkward, but new research suggests that parents need to have those conversations much earlier than they do.

In two national surveys, investigators found that between 4% and 8% of boys reported having sex before they were 13. That number varied greatly depending on where the boys lived. In San Francisco, just 5% of boys said they had sex before 13, but in Memphis that number jumped to 25%.

Can that number for Memphis possibly be accurate?

I certainly hope not.

Unfortunately, it is not just in the United States where boys are falling behind.  If you can believe it, boys are educationally behind girls in each of the 63 largest developed nations.

The world has changed, and it appears to be leaving boys behind.

But what is going to happen when all of those boys grow up?

The young people of today are the future, and right now that future is not looking very promising at all.

Moroccans protest prison sentences of anti-poverty activists

Thousands of demonstrators in Morocco are condemning prison sentences given to the leader of the Hirak Rif anti-poverty movement and dozens of other activists.

The demonstration brought one of the main avenues of the Moroccan capital, Rabat, to a standstill on Sunday. Security forces kept watch as participants sang, "The people want the detainees released" and "Long live Rif."

Hirak leader Nasser Zefzafi was sentenced to the maximum prison term of 20 years for threatening state security. An appeals court upheld his sentence and those of other activists this month.

Rif is the struggling region in northern Morocco where the Hirak movement was born in 2016. The movement demands development and job creation for the region.

Families, human rights organizations and left-wing parties are demanding the imprisoned activists' immediate release.

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.

Hundreds of Cuban migrants are reported to be on the run Friday in Mexico after a crowd of more than 1,000 burst out of a troubled immigration detention center on its southern border.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said the mass escape Thursday in Tapachula – which the Associated Press called the largest in recent memory — involved around 1,300 Cuban migrants, although 700 of them have since returned voluntarily.

The migrants reportedly streamed out of the compound without any resistance, as the institute said its agents weren’t armed and “there was no confrontation.”

Federal police with riot shields later rushed in to control the situation, as a crowd of angry Cubans whose relatives were being held at the facility gathered outside. The Cubans claimed their relatives reported overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at the facility.

BORDER PATROL UNION CHIEF BLASTS CONGRESS OVER MIGRANT CARAVANS: ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT’?

“My wife and child have been in there for 27 days in bad conditions,” said Usmoni Velazquez Vallejo, as he waited outside for news. “There is overcrowding, insufficient food and there isn’t even medicine for them.”

Another Cuban detainee told the AFP: “We have many there… we are very tight, we sleep on the floor.”

It’s the third time since October that migrants at the facility staged an uprising, according to the news agency.

The center’s holding capacity is officially listed at less than 1,000 people, but the escape of 1,300 meant it was probably at least at double its capacity, since not everyone being held there escaped. Residents in the area said that sometimes the facility has held as many as 3,000 people, and a Mexican newspaper cited by Reuters said Haitians and Central Americans also are among the large group who still have not been tracked down.

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

The Washington Post’s media critic went into meltdown after White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders held a mock press briefing for the children of White House journalists and employees on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

Erik Wemple, the newspaper’s chief media critic, slammed Sanders and the White House for organizing a fun day on Thursday for junior would-be journalists, while not holding an actual press conference for the record number of days.

WHITE HOUSE STAFF TO SKIP CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER AFTER LAST YEAR’S CONTROVERSY

Wemple wrote that Sanders gave to children an important lesson of “the centrality of nonaccountability mechanisms in the affairs of state” after she announced that the mock press briefing was “off the record.”

“When the children head home tonight, perhaps they can pull up archival footage to see how their questions stack up against ye olde press briefings,” he added.

“Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

“Tuesday, after all, marked a record for number of days without a White House press briefing. Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

While some correspondents praised the White House for doing “a lot of work to welcome the children and provide “them an excellent experience,” other journalists echoed Wemple’s criticism and pointed out that Sanders hasn’t held a press briefing in over 40 days.

“Kids of WH Press Corps members are getting ready for a briefing with  @PressSec. Their parents have not had one in 45 days,” tweeted CBS News’ White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang.

REPORTER SHOUTS AT SARAH SANDERS AFTER BRIEFING: ‘DO YOUR JOB, SARAH!’

“The irony of it is that they’re pretending that the White House press briefing is a thing, and they’re pretending that this is how the White House operates, but this is not at all how the White House operates … It’s a relic of an earlier time,” another correspondent quoted by the Post said.

The Post struck a different tune in a column earlier this year, which declared that despite the administration’s criticism of the media, President Trump was “extremely accessible.”

Wemple quoted Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project, who said that Trump held 338 “short question-and-answer” sessions over his time in office, significantly more than 75 such sessions by former President Barack Obama during his first full two years in office.
