CNN Host: Trump Supporters Saying ‘Lock Her Up’ Is ‘Hate Speech’; FBI Should ‘Shut Down’ Chants

CNN host Christiane Amanpour suggested Tuesday that chants of ‘lock her up’, directed toward Hillary Clinton, a staple of Trump supporters at his raucous rallies, constitutes ‘hate speech’ and that the FBI should work to “shut down that language”.

Amanpour was interviewing former FBI head James Comey, and asked him if he would work to censor the chants and the sentiment behind them if he were still in charge of the intelligence agency.

“Do you, in retrospect, wish that people like yourself, the head of the FBI, the people in charge of law and order, had shut down that language, that it was dangerous potentially, that it could have created violence, that it’s kind of hate speech? Should that have been allowed?” Amanpour asked.

While he noted that “That’s not a role for government to play,” Comey described the chants as “misleading” and an example of “demagoguery”.

“The beauty of this country is people can say what they want, even if it’s misleading and it’s demagoguery.” Comey said.

“The people who should have shut it down were Republicans, who understand the rule of law and the values that they claim to stand for. Shame on them, but it wasn’t a role for government to play.” Comey added.

Elsewhere during the interview, Amanpour suggested that Comey to blame for Trump winning the election because days beforehand he reopened the FBI investigation into Clinton’s email server.

“Do you ever think that you might be responsible for the election of President Trump?” She asked, adding “Does that keep you up at night?”

Amanpour also asked “Are you worried in hindsight that you didn’t bust any norm, or you didn’t tell the people that you were investigating Russian interference before the election?”

A defensive Comey replied “What would we disclose? It was all classified to begin with?” adding that talking about the investigation “would have been irresponsible in the extreme.”

Greece: 4 bodies recovered from car swept into river

Greek authorities say rescue crews have recovered the bodies of four people who were swept away in their car by a swollen river on the southern island of Crete, following heavy rainfall in the region.

The fire department said rescue crews located the car in the Geropotamos river on Monday, with all four people still inside.

The four — a young married couple, the wife's sister and her mother — had reportedly been returning from a wedding celebration nearby late on Saturday night when their car was swept away by floodwaters. Two calls were made to emergency services from the car at around 1 a.m. Sunday, but rescue crews were unable to reach them in time despite a massive search operation.

Texas police seek author of mystery letter in girl’s cold case murder 45 years ago

A Texas cold case squad on Friday released an old handwritten letter that could solve a 17-year-old girl’s brutal murder 45 years ago.

The short letter refers to the Carla Walker homicide in February 1974 in Fort Worth. Police said the girl was beaten, raped, strangled and tortured after being abducted from a bowling alley parking lot. Detectives found her body three days after the abduction.

“(Blank) kild (sic) Carla Walker in Benbrook,” says the undated note to a homicide detective with the Fort Worth Police Department.

CALIFORNIA COLD CASE RAPE, KILLINGS OF 2 WOMEN LINKED TO DEAD INMATE IN WASHINGTON

It also says, “P.S. It is hard to say but it is true.”

Before and after the postscript, the letter says “Sign 10100,” which investigators believe is police code for dead body, the Dallas Morning News reports.

“The author of this letter is encouraged to come forward and speak with detectives about his or her knowledge of the murder,” police said in a news release announcing the disclosure of the letter. “It is the hope of the Fort Worth Police Department that this person will provide valuable information that may bring peace and closure to Carla’s family after 45 long years.”

PENNSYLVANIA MAN, 76, CHARGED WITH KILLING WIFE WHO VANISHED IN 1981

It’s unclear when the letter was written but the letter’s recipient retired in 1976, according to reports.

Carla’s boyfriend was knocked unconscious when she was abducted, the paper reported.

"She was such a sweet girl," Rodney McCoy told a local news station last year, according to the paper. "I remember we were in the front seat of the car. Her back was against the passenger door. She was falling out. I went to grab her, and he started beating me over the head with a pistol."

‘Fight and talk’: Afghan war escalates alongside peace push

KABUL (Reuters) – Fighting in Afghanistan has escalated ahead of the usual spring season, as both sides seek to increase leverage in talks on a peace settlement – a gamble that analysts warn could also risk hardening positions.

In March, hundreds of Afghan forces were killed or wounded in heavy clashes in southern, western and northern Afghanistan, according to unofficial reports. Two U.S. special forces were killed near Kunduz, and attacks by both sides caused civilian casualties. U.S. air strikes also accidentally killed Afghan soldiers, in a case of friendly fire.

“Government forces are on the offensive this year. We expect a lot of fighting and obviously casualties,” said a senior Afghan security source.

Seasonal trends to fighting have become less defined over the years, as most Taliban now fight near their homes and so do not need to wait for snow to melt in the mountain passes to travel to battlefields, said Graeme Smith, a consultant for the International Crisis Group (ICG).

Even so, the Taliban annually announces the start of a spring offensive with fanfare and a name evoking epic importance, such as last year’s “Al Khandaq” campaign – named after the Battle of the Trench, fought by the Prophet Mohammad to defend the city of Medina in Islam’s early days.

This year, Afghan forces beat the Taliban to naming their offensive, launching a spring operation dubbed “Khaled”, an Arabic word for “endless”, said the Afghan security source.

“The objective of the operations this year will be to improve intelligence gathering and targeted strikes against the enemy,” he said.

The “fight and talk” strategy has been used to describe the Afghan war as far back as the Obama U.S. presidency. One diplomat said Afghanistan’s escalation follows a similar path of greater fighting in South Sudan and Colombia ahead of peace settlements for those conflicts.

But for a country 17 years into its latest war, the escalation only adds to a sense of discouragement.

Rising violence also comes with the risk that positions will harden, deferring a settlement, rather than creating urgency that could bring the sides together, said the ICG’s Smith.

Afghanistan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah, asked about the more aggressive strategy, said it simply reflected a need to be ready for every possibility.

“If the government and the Taliban agreed on a ceasefire, then the security defense forces will act accordingly,” he told reporters in Kabul.

Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Kone Faulkner said in an email that there has been “no change” in U.S. policies and in its partnered fighting with Afghan forces.

TALIBAN GEARING UP

The latest round of recurring peace talks ended in early March with both U.S. and Taliban officials citing progress. The start of the next round has not been announced, but is expected this month.

The negotiations came amid fierce fighting in several corners of Afghanistan, from Kunduz province in the north to Helmand in the south and Badghis in the northwest.

Some 100 members of Afghan forces were killed in two attacks in Badghis and Helmand. Thirteen civilians, including 10 children, died in a U.S. air strike in Kunduz and more civilians died in a Helmand stadium attack by the Taliban.

Ninety-four members of the Taliban died in a single battle near Kunduz city, according to NATO’s Resolute Support Mission, which is supported by troops from 39 countries to train, advise and assist Afghan forces. Fighting in the province killed two U.S. soldiers a day earlier.

The Taliban, meanwhile, met recently to discuss the timing and name of its spring campaign, said a Taliban leader, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“Our focus would be more specifically on targeted operations,” the leader said. “Our top priority would be minimizing civilian losses.”

Some Taliban leaders had suggested simply continuing ongoing operations and awaiting the outcome of peace talks, he said. But the group decided against further delay once Afghan forces launched its Khaled offensive, he said.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the group would launch its spring offensive in about a month when the weather warms.

One diplomat, whose country supplies soldiers to the Resolute Support mission, said he doubted the Taliban wanted to stop fighting, because it would be difficult to quickly regain the insurgency’s fighting capability if its forces dispersed.

“The Taliban’s leverage is their military activities,” a second diplomat said.

Both spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of talks.

Increased fighting also heightens concerns about civilian casualties, after a record 3,804 civilians were killed last year, said Anthony Neal, advocacy manager for the Norwegian Refugee Council in Afghanistan.

More conflict has also forced nearly 4,000 people from their homes in the last three months alone, he said.

Trump Calls for Obama-Era Stimulus

The “Powell Pause” is not enough. President Donald Trump not only wants interest rates cuts; he wants to put quantitative easing back in play.

During an interview Friday, the president once again complained about the Fed’s 2018 interest rate increases, saying “they really slowed us down.” Trump wants stimulus and called on the Fed to resume Obama era QE.

“Well, I personally think the Fed should drop rates. I think they really slowed us down. There’s no inflation. I would say in terms of quantitative tightening, it should actually now be quantitative easing. Very little if any inflation. And I think they should drop rates, and they should get rid of quantitative tightening. You would see a rocket ship. Despite that, we’re doing very well.”

The Fed has already committed to ending tightening later this year.

In his latest podcast, Peter Schiff pointed out just how incomprehensible Trump’s position is.

“Donald Trump is, on the one hand, saying we’ve got the greatest economy ever in the history of the country, yet he’s also saying we need the same type of stimulus that we had during the Great Recession.”

So, which is it? Either the economy is strong or it isn’t.

“If we need life support, it’s not strong.”

Ironically, Trump was a big critic of QE when Obama was doing it. And he was right to do so. But now that he can benefit politically from the same kind of Fed policy, he wants it.

“Now, as president, he is calling for the Federal Reserve to do exactly what he criticized the Federal Reserve for doing when Obama was president. But now he’s president and he wants the Fed to do political things because he is the beneficiary, because now it’s the Trump economy so it’s the Trump bubble. And so he wants the bubble to get bigger and bigger, and so he wants the Feds to make the same mistakes under his administration that it made under the Obama administration, and he no longer gives a damn about the long-term consequences that may be negative because the furthest in the future that Donald Trump can now see is the 2020 election, and he wants a second term.”

But Peter said he doesn’t think this is only hypocrisy on the president’s part. He also thinks Trump’s call for QE exposes the lie.

“I think when Donald Trump talks about how great the economy is, I don’t think he believes it. I think it’s just talk. I think it’s just a show that he’s putting on. I think it’s all public relations. I think, deep down, if you could get the president in a room and he could talk in confidence, I think he would admit that the economy is not doing well. I think he knows it’s the same big, fat, ugly bubble that he called out when he was a candidate.”

Peter has been saying all along the Fed will eventually go back to quantitative easing once it realizes the recession is upon us. But Trump wants QE now, hoping that it will delay the recession until after the 2020 election.

“If the Fed waits for the recession to start, the recession is not going to be over before the election. And if the economy goes into recession, now what is the basis for Trump’s campaign for reelection? It’s supposed to be ‘Keep America Great Again.’ Well, if America is back in recession, who’s going to want to keep that?”

Trump is positioning himself to blame the Fed if we do fall into recession before the election.

Peter also touched on Trump’s nomination of Herman Cain and Stephen Moore. Some people have expressed optimism that maybe Trump wants to reform the Fed. Peter said he doesn’t think that’s the case.

“Trump is not talking about putting Cain or Moore on the Federal Reserve because he wants to go back to the gold standard. He wants them there because they’re Republicans, and they’re partisan, and they’re his friends. And they understand, I think, that the Federal Reserve has inflated a bubble. just like Trump, and their main goal at the Fed will be to keep the party going long enough to reelect him.”

(Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures were flat on Friday, as investors paused ahead of GDP data, which is expected to show the world’s largest economy maintained a moderate pace of growth in the first quarter.

Gross domestic product probably increased at a 2% annualized rate in the quarter as a burst in exports, strong inventory stockpiling and government investment in public construction projects offset a slowdown in consumer and business spending, according to a Reuters survey of economists.

The Commerce Department report will be published at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The GDP data comes as investors look for fresh catalysts to push the markets higher. The S&P 500 index is about 0.5% below its record high hit in late September, after surging nearly 17% this year.

First-quarter earnings have been largely upbeat, with nearly 78% of the 178 companies that have reported so far surpassing earnings estimates, according to Refinitiv data.

Wall Street now expects S&P 500 earnings to be in line with the year-ago quarter, a sharp improvement from the 2.3% fall expected at the start of April.

Amazon.com Inc rose 0.9% in premarket trading after the e-commerce giant reported quarterly profit that doubled and beat estimates on soaring demand for its cloud and ad services.

Ford Motor Co shares surged 8.5% after the automaker posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings largely due to strong pickup truck sales in its core U.S. market.

Mattel Inc jumped 8% after the toymaker beat analysts’ estimates for quarterly revenue, as a more diverse range of Barbie dolls powered sales in the United States.

At 6:52 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 35 points, or 0.13%. S&P 500 e-minis were down 1.5 points, or 0.05% and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 10.75 points, or 0.14%.

Among decliners, Intel Corp slumped 7.7% after it cut its full-year revenue forecast and missed quarterly sales estimate for its key data center business.

Rival Advanced Micro Devices declined 0.8%.

Oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp are expected to report results later in the day.

WARSAW (Reuters) – Germany could owe Poland more than $850 billion in reparations for damages it incurred during World War Two and the brutal Nazi occupation, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Germany, one of Poland’s biggest trade partners and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO, says all financial claims linked to World War Two have been settled.

The right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) has revived calls for compensation since it took power in 2015 and has made the promotion of Poland’s wartime victimhood a central plank of its appeal to nationalism.

PiS has yet to make an official demand for reparations but its combative stance towards Germany has strained relations.

“Poland lost not only millions of its citizens but it was also destroyed in an unusually brutal way,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who heads the Polish parliamentary committee on reparations, told Reuters in an interview.

“Many (victims) are still alive and feel deeply wronged.”

His comments come a month before European Parliament elections in which populist and nationalist parties are expected to do well. Poland will also hold national elections later this year, with PiS still well ahead of its rivals in opinion polls.

EU LARGESSE

Mularczyk said the reparations figure could amount to more than 10 times the estimated 100 billion euros ($111 billion) that Poland has received so far in European Union funds since it joined the bloc in 2004.

Germany is the biggest net donor to the EU budget and some Germans regard its contributions as generous compensation to recipient countries like Poland which suffered under Nazi rule.

In 1953 Poland’s then-communist rulers relinquished all claims to war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to free East Germany, also a Soviet satellite, from any liabilities. PiS says that agreement is invalid because Poland was unable to negotiate fair compensation.

Mularczyk said his committee hoped to complete its report on the reparations issue by Sept. 1, the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s invasion.

Accusing Berlin of playing “diplomatic games” over the issue, he said: “The matter is being swept under the rug (by Germany) … until it’ll be wiped from the memory, from people’s awareness.”

His comments come after the Greek parliament voted this month to seek billions of euros in German reparations for the Nazi occupation of their country.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States did not pay any money to North Korea as it sought the release of comatose American student Otto Warmbier.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump had approved payment of a $2 million bill from North Korea to cover its care of the college student, who died shortly after he was returned to the United States after 17 months in a North Korean prison.

Al-Qaida in Yemen is vowing to avenge beheadings carried out by Saudi Arabia this week — an indication that some of the 37 Saudis executed on terrorism-related charges were members of the Sunni militant group.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, as the branch is called, posted a statement on militant-linked websites on Friday, accusing the kingdom of offering the blood of the “noble children of the nation just to appease America.”

The statement says al-Qaida will “never forget about their blood and we will avenge them.”

U.S. ally Saudi Arabia on Tuesday executed 37 suspects convicted on terrorism-related charges. Most were believed to be Shiites but at least one was believed to be a Sunni militant.

His body was pinned to a pole in public as a warning to others.

For two friends with checkered pasts it was the luck of a lifetime: a 4 million-pound ($5.2 million) lottery win.

But Mark Goodram and Jon-Ross Watson may see their celebrations cut short.

The Sun newspaper reports that Britain’s National Lottery is withholding the payout as it investigates whether the men, who have a string of criminal convictions, used illicit means to buy the winning ticket.

The Sun said neither man has a bank account, leading lottery organizers to investigate how they obtained the bank-issued debit card that paid for the 10 pound ($13) scratch card.

Camelot, which runs the lottery, said Friday it couldn’t confirm details of the story because of winner-anonymity rules. The firm said it holds a “thorough investigation” if there is any doubt about a claim.
