Double-amputee rescued from island in middle of Rio Grande River while trying to cross into US

A double-amputee was rescued by border patrol agents from an island on the Rio Grande River in Texas on Wednesday while he was trying to make his way into the U.S.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a news release that U.S. Border Patrol Agents from the Eagle Pass Station marine unit saw the man in a wheelchair by himself on the island in the center of the river.

Agents went out to the island and identified the man as a 37-year-old Guatemalan. The man claimed he crossed to the island on his own, but was unable to continue the crossing.

Officials said the man was determined to be in the U.S. illegally and was assisted to the shore for medical attention and processing.

NEARLY 2,000 IMMIGRANTS TO BE RELEASED IN TEXAS FROM FEDERAL CUSTODY THIS WEEKEND, REPORT SAYS

“The current humanitarian crisis on the border is stressing our immigration system,” CBP Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Felix Chavez said in a statement. “Our stations and processing centers were never designed to handle the current demographics of families and medical cases that we are experiencing. Our agents treat each person with humanity and compassion while enforcing the immigration laws and protecting the country.”

The incident on Wednesday came after two other encounters with people this week who had special needs due to mental or physical limitations.

On Tuesday, officials said a 41-year-old Honduran male was apprehended crossing the Rio Grande. Agents quickly realized that he could neither hear nor speak, making communication a challenge, according to CBP.

CBP DEFENDS DECISION TO DETAIN GIRL, 9, FOR MORE THAN 30 HOURS DESPITE HER BEING US CITIZEN

The day before, a 36-year-old Honduran woman was arrested entering the United States illegally with her stepbrother.

"She was found to have a mental impairment that causes her to become agitated and inconsolable," the agency said. "The female was calmed by her stepbrother, so processing could be completed."

GOP Privately Hope Trump Loses Case to Invalidate Obamacare

Senate Republicans are privately hoping that President Donald Trump will lose his fight in court to strike down the Affordable Care Act, because if he wins then Congress won’t be able to pass something to replace Obamacare, which will hurt the GOP in the next election, The Hill reported on Monday.

“If you’re looking strictly at political outcomes, it could be argued that a lot of members don’t want to see this struck down because they don’t want to deal with the fallout,” a senior Republican senator said.

The GOP concerns come after the Trump administration announced it is asking an appeals court to affirm a lower court’s ruling that Obamacare is unconstitutional, which is a change in tactics after it initially argued that the courts should only invalidate parts of the law.

Trump last week vowed that "If the Supreme Court rules that Obamacare is out, we will have a plan that is far better than Obamacare," according to Politico.

But another GOP senator told The Hill that “If they were really working to build something that had legs, you would have thought there were some conversations prior to Tuesday and there were none,” with some Republicans saying that Trump did not fully think through his strategy before announcing last Tuesday that the "Republican Party will soon be known as the party of health care.”

GOP senators have described Trump’s decision as especially reckless as the country is already in an election cycle and that every Republican  “was caught flatfooted,” by the move, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who “had no idea” it was coming.

Florida man expected to plead guilty in mailing of bombs to leading Dems

A Florida man accused of mass-mailing explosive devices to top Democrats including former President Barack Obama is expected to plead guilty next week, according to federal court documents.

Cesar Sayoc, 56, was taken into custody in October after his fingerprints were found on packages containing improvised explosive devices sent to a variety of liberal officials. They included Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, former presidential candidate and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and current presidential candidates Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey.

In addition to political leaders, Sayoc allegedly mailed more than a dozen pipe bombs to other prominent figures and locations, including actor Robert De Niro and the CNN headquarters in New York City.

None of the bombs detonated and there were no injuries as a result of Sayoc's alleged plan. Prosecutors argued in court that Sayoc had a list of "hundreds" of names on it, which was said to be his hit list.

Sayoc reportedly faces 30 charges, and it is not known which specific ones his guilty plea will involve, ABC News reported. He faces up to 48 years in prison if he is convicted of the five federal charges against him.

At the time of Sayoc's arrest in October, he was living out of a large white van plastered with stickers of President Trump and Vice President Pence. Another of his stickers read, "CNN SUCKS."

As the case against him unfolded, more information about the Aventura, Fla., native began to come out. His family and those who knew him when he first traveled to the United States 13 years ago said he never expressed racist or homophobic remarks. He came to the country with a mixed-race troupe of exotic male dancers, and one former fellow dancer, David Crosby, said they were friends -- sharing accommodations and traveling together to perform.

JUDGE DISMISSES INDECENT EXPOSURE CHARGE AGAINST PILOT

He was, however, known to have a temper -- and was accused of biting women that came to the clubs he danced at so hard that he left teeth marks.

Changes in his personality were later observed by some in his orbit when he began working as a pizza delivery man. His manager, Debra Gureghian, said that when Sayoc found out she was a lesbian, he became very agitated. "I was an abomination, I was God's misfit. ... I was a mistake," Gureghian said. Sayoc thought she "should burn in hell with Ellen DeGeneres and Rachel Maddow ... and President Obama and Hillary Clinton."

At one point, Gureghian said Sayoc gave her a ride home in his van, where she found it covered in fast food containers, alcoholic beverages, and dolls with their heads cut off.

Sayoc will reportedly appear in a New York court on Thursday to enter his plea.

Denver airport’s $14.5M taxpayer-funded sign busted after less than 2 years in use: reports

Denver International Airport built a wall of sorts -- a 1,000-foot-long collection of illuminated poles interrupted by large television screens for displaying ads -- but now the wall doesn't work right.

The $14.5 million government-funded Panasonic sign has broken down after only 16 months in operation, leaving many questioning if the sign will ever rake in enough ad dollars to recoup the large investment, according to a report.

LAX TRAVELERS WARNED ABOUT POSSIBLE MEASLES EXPOSURE AGAIN

The structure had been gradually deteriorating since being activated in 2017. The airport decided to shut off the “sticks” on April 5 until Panasonic can repair the problems, the Denver Post reported. The sign will still display advertisements on its large television screens in the meantime.

Panasonic received $11.5 from Denver International to build the sign and another $3 million to maintain it over 12 years, the Post reported. The airport grossed only $21,000 on its investment in 2018, prompting city officials to step in to ramp up ad sales, Denver's FOX 31 reported.

The Denver City Council hired an outside advertising firm, Outfront Media LLC, in February, to try to convince companies to place their ads on the multimillion-dollar sign. As per the contract, the airport will receive a minimum of $12,500 in monthly revenue until the sign begins to generate more revenue.

CLICK HERE FOR THE FOX NEWS APP

The airport will receive 67 percent of gross ad sales, the rest going to the firm, Denver International told FOX 31. However, the airport expects to generate revenue at a higher pace in the coming months, expecting $1.2 worth of ad sales by the end of the contract’s first year.

NATO Allies Far Behind Trump’s Spending Demands

European NATO allies increased defense expenditure in 2018, with big rises in the Baltics, Poland and the Netherlands, according to new figures.

But while Canadian spending fell, Germany’s lagged and only six of NATOs 30 members, excluding the US, met the spending target demanded by President Donald Trump.

Germany’s spending actually rose last year but remained stable relative to growing gross domestic product (GDP). Berlin has previously attracted the brunt of Trump’s claims of freeloading by European NATO members.

The authoritarian establishment media is now openly reporting anyone who disagrees with them to front organizations of the military industrial complex.

Europe Nearing Goals

With overall European spending up, hitting a five-year high of 1.51 percent of GDP, Britain, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland met the 2 percent goal, according to the NATO 2018 annual report.

Bulgaria, the Baltics and the Netherlands pumped in an extra 20 percent in 2018 compared to 2017.

Europe in general has been pushed into more military funding following the 2014 Russian annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea, Islamist militancy and Trump’s demands for sharing the cost of defending Europe.

Members have promised to try to hit the target by 2024 but slow progress has angered Trump, prompting him in August last year to threaten pulling out of the alliance if they didn’t boost spending immediately.

European states have argued security is not just about spending targets. Added to that, despite welcome growth rates, rising GDPs have made meeting the relative figure difficult.

German Spending Stable

Europe’s largest economy, Germany, invested an additional €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion) in defense last year, raising the figure to almost €42 billion ($47 billion) and keeping its rate as a percentage of GDP stable at 1.23 percent.

That leaves Germany at the lower end of the spectrum, with the US at 3.39 percent, while Belgium and Spain remain below 1 percent of economic output. Spending in Canada fell by almost 11 percent last year.

“Right Direction”

NATO head Jens Stoltenberg said the increase showed “we are moving in the right direction.” He previously argued NATO is undergoing a significant shift in spending as it seeks to deter Russia and undergoes its biggest modernization in decades.

From 2016 to 2020, NATO states excluding the US are expected to increase defense budgets by $100 billion.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Federal Reserve may lower the interest it pays on excess reserves banks leave with it by 5 basis points at its April 30-May 1 policy meeting in a bid to prevent the federal funds rate from drifting higher, Morgan Stanley analysts said on Friday.

This would mark the third such “technical” adjustment on the interest on excess reserves (IOER) following cuts last June and December.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – World number one Naomi Osaka came from behind in the final set to beat Croatian Donna Vekic 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) on Friday and move into the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix semi-finals.

Osaka comfortably won the opening set but was tested by the Croatian, who pushed her to the limit in the second and third. The Japanese made 45 unforced errors as she struggles to get to grips with swapping hard courts for clay.

Osaka was visibly frustrated and trailed 5-1 in the final set but she refused to give up and found her rhythm to break Vekic twice and prevent her from serving for the match.

In the tiebreaker, a confident Osaka upped her baseline game and had two early mini breaks before wrapping up the match in two hours and 18 minutes. An infuriated Vekic even smashed her racket after losing the match.

“I told myself I didn’t want to have any regrets here,” Osaka said. “I was stressed out when I went down 1-5… but this (comeback) was pretty good because I don’t play really well on clay.”

Earlier, world number three Petra Kvitova came back from a set down to beat Anastasija Sevastova 2-6 6-2 6-3 and move into the tournament’s semi-finals for the third time in her career.

Sevastova had a dream start, breaking Kvitova twice to take a 3-0 lead as the Czech struggled with her first serve. Kvitova also made a slew of unforced errors, with many of her returns going long.

Sevastova used the full width of the court to get the better of Kvitova, who played on the back foot for much of the first set as the Latvian gave her little time to catch her breath.

However, Kvitova recovered in the second set and she broke Sevastova’s serve when she was 3-2 up, winning 10 straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Sevastova looked shaken and was broken again to give Kvitova the second set.

Kvitova took command in the final set and broke a visibly upset Sevastova to take a 3-1 lead before easing into the semis.

“In the first set I missed almost everything. I was pretty slow and she just couldn’t miss,” Kvitova said. “In the second set it was very important for me to stay on my serve and the chance to break her came.”

Kiki Bertens plays Angelique Kerber later on Friday and Victoria Azarenka faces Anett Kontaveit in the last quarter-final.

The Latest on fatal pileup on Interstate 70 near Denver (all times local):

10:10 a.m.

Colorado officials say four people have died after a semi-truck hauling lumber plowed into vehicles on Interstate 70, causing a fire so intense that it melted the roadway and metal off of cars.

Authorities had to wait until daylight Friday to confirm the death toll from Thursday’s 28-vehicle pileup because of the devastation caused by the fire.

Six people were taken to hospitals with injuries. Their conditions are unclear.

Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman says the driver of the truck who caused the crash sustained minor injuries. He has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

Officials say the driver was headed down a hill when he slammed into slower traffic. Countryman says there is no indication the crash was intentional.

7:40 a.m.

A truck driver blamed for causing a deadly pileup involving over two dozen vehicles near Denver has been arrested on vehicular homicide charges.

Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman said Friday that there’s no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in Thursday’s crash.

The unidentified driver was headed down a hill on Interstate 70 when he slammed into slower traffic and sparked a massive fire. Countryman said police are looking at whether his brakes were working properly.

He said 28 vehicles were involved, up from the initial 15 vehicles police reported after further sorting through the burned wreckage.

Police still say there were multiple fatalities but are still working to provide an exact number.

The highway is expected to remain closed until Saturday.

Tiger woods celebrates after winning the 2019 Masters
FILE PHOTO: Golf – Masters – Augusta National Golf Club – Augusta, Georgia, U.S. – April 14, 2019 – Tiger Woods of the U.S. celebrates on the 18th hole after winning the 2019 Masters. REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson

April 26, 2019

Tiger Woods is sending a message that he thinks he still has enough left, emotionally and physically, to win three more major championships to tie Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 titles.

Speaking to GolfTV in his first sit-down interview since the Masters, Woods said he has taken some time off since his victory at Augusta National, which still doesn’t feel real.

“Honestly, it’s hard to believe,” Woods said. “I was texting one of my good friends last night … that I couldn’t believe that I won the tournament. That it really hasn’t sunk in. I haven’t started doing anything. I’ve just been laying there. And every now and again, I’ll look over there on the couch and there’s the jacket.”

That’s the fifth green jacket for the 43-year-old Woods, who hadn’t won a major tournament since the 2008 U.S. Open. Along the way, four back surgeries, a divorce and other personal issues derailed him.

He said he has been spending time with his children – daughter Sam, 11, and son Charlie, 10 – who weren’t born when their father was the most dominant golfer on the planet.

“They never knew golf to be a good thing in my life and only the only thing they remember is that it brought this incredible amount of pain to their dad and they don’t want to ever want to see their dad in pain,” Woods said. “And so to now have them see this side of it, the side that I’ve experienced for so many years of my life, but I had a battle to get back to this point, it feels good.”

He said he hopes – maybe expects — they’ll see this side again.

And no one will take Woods for granted at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black Course on Long Island, N.Y., which starts May 16.

Woods said he’ll be ready for a course he already conquered once in a major: the 2002 U.S. Open.

“I’m doing all the visual stuff, but I haven’t put in the physical work yet. But it’s probably coming this weekend,” he said.

Before Woods encountered health and personal problems, it was expected that topping Nicklaus’ major mark was “when” and not “if.” Then the certainty went away, but Woods thought he still had a chance.

“I always thought it was possible, if I had everything go my way. It took him an entire career to get to 18, so now that I’ve had another extension to my career – one that I didn’t think I had a couple of years ago – if I do things correctly and everything falls my way, yeah, it’s a possibility. I’m never going to say it’s not.

“Now I just need to have a lot of things go my way, and who’s to say that it will or will not happen? That’s what the future holds, I don’t know. The only thing I can promise you is this: that I will be prepared.”

Maria Butina, the Russian woman who was accused of being a secret agent for the Russian government, was sentenced to 18 months in prison Friday by a federal judge in Washington after pleading guilty last year to a conspiracy charge.

Butina, who has already served nine months behind bars, will get credit for time served and can possibly get credit for good behavior, the judge said. She will be removed from the U.S. promptly on completion of her time, the judge added, and returned to Russia.

MARIA BUTINA, ACCUSED RUSSIAN SPY, PLEADS GUILTY TO CONSPIRACY

An emotional and apologetic Butina said in court Friday she is “truly sorry” and regrets not registering as a foreign agent.

“I feel ashamed and embarrassed,” she said, adding that her “reputation is ruined.”

Butina has been jailed since her arrest in July 2018. She entered the court Friday wearing a dark green prison jumpsuit and spoke in clear English, with a slight Russian accent.

“Please accept my apologies,” Butina said.

Butina’s lawyer, Robert Driscoll, said after the sentencing they had hoped for a “better outcome,” but expressed a desire for Butina to be released to her family by the fall.

Prosecutors had claimed Butina used her contacts with the National Rifle Association and the National Prayer Breakfast to develop relationships with U.S. politicians and gather information for Russia.

Prosecutors also have said that Butina’s boyfriend, conservative political operative Paul Erickson, identified in court papers as “U.S. Person 1,” helped her establish ties with the NRA.

WHO IS MARIA BUTINA, THE RUSSIAN WOMAN ACCUSED OF SPYING ON US?

In their filings, prosecutors claim federal agents found Butina had contact information for people suspected of being employed by Russia’s Federal Security Services, or FSB, the successor intelligence agency to the KGB. Inside her home, they found notes referring to a potential job offer from the FSB, according to the documents.

Investigators recovered several emails and Twitter direct message conversations in which Butina referred to the need to keep her work secret and, in one instance, said it should be “incognito.” Prosecutors said Butina had contact with Russian intelligence officials and that the FBI photographed her dining with a diplomat suspected of being a Russian intelligence agent.
