Former Rep. Joseph Crowley, who lost to Ocasio-Cortez, joins top lobbying firm

The former New York congressman whose 2018 primary election loss sparked the rise of Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is now going on to work for a top lobbying firm.

Joseph Crowley's move to Squire Patton Boggs -- announced Tuesday -- comes after the 10-term incumbent was unseated by Ocasio-Cortez in the Democratic congressional primary last spring. The firm also employs former House Speaker John Boehner and former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott.

The firm, in a statement, described Crowley as a "blockbuster addition."

Before his defeat, Crowley was considered to be one of the possible successors to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to the Associated Press. In 2017, he became chair of the House Democratic Caucus.

OCASIO-CORTEZ RAISES EYEBROWS AFTER COMPARING TRUMP'S BORDER WALL TO BERLIN WALL

The 29-year-old Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman ever elected to Congress and has emerged as a leader of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

In a statement, Squire Patton Boggs said former Republican Bill Shuster will also be joining its global public policy practice.

As former lawmakers, both Crowley and Shuster must adhere to a one-year cooling off period, which means they can’t lobby their former colleagues or represent a foreign entity. However, this doesn’t include current members of the executive branch or state government officials.

April 26, 2019

Trevor Bauer won his individual matchup against Gerrit Cole, his former UCLA staff mate, and the Cleveland Indians claimed the opener of their four-game series with the host Houston Astros 2-1 Thursday.

Bauer (3-1) allowed at least one baserunner in each of his eight innings yet faced just one batter with a runner in scoring position. The Astros managed one run off Bauer: a 411-foot solo home run from George Springer in the third.

Bauer yielded four hits and six walks while fanning three. Cleveland got solo homers from Leonys Martin in the third inning and Jake Bauers in the fifth. Brad Hand threw a perfect ninth inning for his seventh save.

Cole (1-4) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks in seven innings. He struck out 10.

Diamondbacks 5, Pirates 0

Zack Greinke pitched seven two-hit scoreless innings and tripled and scored to lead visiting Arizona past Pittsburgh, completing a four-game series sweep.

Greinke (4-1) struck out seven and walked one. He retired the final 14 batters he faced. Andrew Chafin pitched the eighth and Yoshihisa Hirano the ninth to complete the combined five-hit shutout.

Christian Walker doubled twice, scored once and drove in a run, and Jarrod Dyson was 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored for Arizona, which has won nine of its last 11.

Angels 11, Yankees 5

David Fletcher drove in a career-high five runs, helping Los Angeles rally from a four-run deficit to beat New York in Anaheim, Calif. The result ended the Yankees’ six-game winning streak.

Fletcher snapped a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning with a two-run single, then added a three-run triple in the seventh inning, extending the Angels’ lead to 11-4. Both hits came with two outs.

Tommy La Stella and Kole Calhoun homered for the Angels. Luke Voit had three hits for the Yankees, who got a home run from Gio Urshela.

Reds 4, Braves 2

Luis Castillo pitched six shutout innings, and Eugenio Suarez drove in three runs and scored another to lift Cincinnati past visiting Atlanta.

Castillo (3-1) allowed eight hits, no walks and struck out a season-low two batters. He also got a base hit — his first of the season — and scored a run. Castillo has posted a 1.16 ERA in his past 11 starts since Aug. 1, 2018.

The Reds won two games in the three-game series and have not lost a series against Atlanta since 2014. Cincinnati has won five of its past seven.

Marlins 3, Phillies 1 (10 innings)

Starlin Castro hit a two-run home run off Hector Neris with two outs in the 10th inning to lift visiting Miami over Philadelphia.

Neil Walker had three hits, including a pair of doubles, while Castro and Jorge Alfaro each added two hits for Miami. Walker’s double in the 10th set up Castro for the go-ahead homer. Tayron Guerrero (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless ninth. Sergio Romo picked up his fourth save in four chances this season.

Sean Rodriguez hit a solo home run and Cesar Hernandez had two hits for the Phillies.

Red Sox 7, Tigers 3

Rick Porcello collected his first victory of the season, rookie Michael Chavis hit his second career homer, and host Boston downed Detroit.

Porcello (1-3), who began the night with an 8.47 ERA, allowed three runs on six hits in six innings with five strikeouts. The Red Sox salvaged the last two games of the four-game series after dropping a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday.

Nicholas Castellanos hit a two-run homer, his first this season, for Detroit. Jordan Zimmermann (0-4) gave up five runs on five hits in three innings.

Dodgers 2, Cubs 1

A pair of runs without the aid of a base hit were all Los Angeles needed to earn a victory at Chicago that salvaged the finale of the three-game series.

The Dodgers scored once in the fifth inning when Chris Taylor’s hot smash to shortstop in the fifth inning eluded the glove of the Cubs’ Javier Baez, allowing Alex Verdugo to score from third. They added an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Cody Bellinger.

The Cubs got their lone run with two outs in the ninth inning when Albert Almora Jr. hit a home run against Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen.

Lady Gaga And Jeremy Renner Spotted Spending Time Together. Here’s What We Know

Katie Jerkovich | Entertainment Reporter

Lady Gaga and actor Jeremy Renner have been spotted out lately spending a lot of time together and it’s got everyone wondering if there’s a new power couple in Hollywood.

Sources close to the 32-year-old singer shared with E! News Thursday that while, yes, she “has been spending time with” the 48-year-old “Avengers” star, they are just friends, and it’s not “romantic.” (RELATED: Take A Look Back At Adriana Lima’s Career With Victoria’s Secret)

“[Gaga] has been friends with Jeremy Renner for a while. They often hang out when they are both in town,” a source shared. “She’s been spending time with him recently, but it’s not romantic.” (RELATED: Mel B Criticizes Lady Gaga For Oscars Performance With Bradley Cooper)

The news comes just one month after reports surfaced that the “Shallow” hitmaker and her fiancée Christian Carino had called off their engagement. (RELATED: Artist Goes After Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus With ‘We All Knew’ Posters Ahead Of Grammys)

Sources close to the “A Star Is Born” actress explained at the time that things just “didn’t work out”: “It just didn’t work out. Relationships sometimes end. There’s no long, dramatic story.”

The insider added, “But things just became serious very fast. Christian is a good, grounding force and understands her career.”

Gaga finally confirmed rumors that she and Carino were engaged in October 2018 after months of speculation.

The “Born This Way” hitmaker recently made headlines following her and co-star Bradley Cooper’s rather steamy performance of their film’s hit song “Shallow” at the Academy Awards, leaving people to wonder if the two had been intimate in real life.

As previously reported, she later addressed the rumors during her appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and said people saw love and that was the whole point.

“Yes, people saw love, and guess what? That’s what we wanted you to see,” Gaga explained. “[‘Shallow’] is a love song, ‘A Star is Born’ is a love story. It was so important to both of us that we were connected the entire time … When you’re singing love songs, that’s what you want people to feel.”

“I’m an artist and I guess [Bradley and I] did a good job … fooled ya!” she added.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – China’s China Changan Automobile Group expects sales at its joint venture with Ford Motor Co to rebound at the end of this year as the U.S. automaker boosts its China product line, Changan’s president said on Tuesday.

Zhu Huarong made the comment to Reuters on the sidelines of the Shanghai Autoshow.

Ford earlier this month announced that it plans to launch more than 30 new models in China over the next three years as it seeks to reverse slumping sales in the world’s biggest auto market.

Warren may be too wonkish to connect with voters, some say

Democratic Party presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s campaign announced the candidate’s next scheduled visits to Iowa on Saturday – amid talk that the senator from Massachusetts may be viewed as too much of a policy wonk to win the party's 2020 nomination.

Warren will return to Iowa March 29-30 with plans to speak at a rally in Storm Lake, hold meet-and-greets in Marshalltown and Perry, and attend an organizing event in West Des Moines, FOX 28 of Cedar Rapids reported.

WILL THE 3 B'S (BETO, BIDEN AND BERNIE) LEAVE ELIZABETH WARREN ON THE SIDELINES IN 2020?

But her focus on breaking up tech giants, ending the electoral college, imposing lobbying bans on elected officials after they leave office and establishing universal pre-K and child care programs – all popular ideas with many Democratic voters – don’t seem to be translating into actual support for Warren, NPR reported.

“You hear from people that [Warren] sort of reminds them of Hillary [Clinton], which they mean in a purely stylistic sense,” Michelle Goldberg, a New York Times columnist, said on the newspaper’s podcast the Argument. “It leads me to wonder: What is the salience of policy in a Democratic primary — or in our politics at all?”

“You hear from people that [Warren] sort of reminds them of Hillary [Clinton], which they mean in a purely stylistic sense.”

— Michelle Goldberg, New York Times columnist

"I just don't know if she would go over nationally," former New Hampshire state Rep. Daniel Hansberry told the Associated Press. He was among 27 current and former state lawmakers who signed a 2015 letter urging Warren to seek the presidency.

"In the Northeast and on the West Coast I wouldn't be a bit surprised if she got a huge vote," Hansberry said. "But I don't know if she's too progressive for other parts of the country."

In other words, when it comes time to choose a candidate, many voters may prefer the sizzle rather than the steak.

That concept may explain why Donald Trump topped Hillary Clinton in 2016, Richard Reeves of the Brookings Institution wrote soon after that election.

"What Donald Trump did during the campaign was to paint in a very broad brush," Reeves wrote. "Rather than having a debate about immigration policy in the round, [Trump asked], 'Are you for or against the wall? Are you for or against the Muslim ban?’”

Warren’s failure to catch fire seems reflected in dollars: A federal filing shows she raised at least $300,000 on the day she launched her campaign – far short of the $6.1 million raised by former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas, the $6 million raised by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., or the $1.5 million raised by Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.

Nevertheless, Warren seems to be sticking with the idea that in 2020 the devil – i.e, the votes – may be in the details.

“The rules of our economy are so rigged in favor of the rich and powerful,” Warren recently told Time magazine, “that we can’t afford to just tinker around the edges. Our fight is for big, structural change.

"The rules of our economy are so rigged in favor of the rich and powerful that we can’t afford to just tinker around the edges. Our fight is for big, structural change."

— U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.

“This is the time for Democrats to identify exactly what’s broken,” she continued, “and lay out exactly how we’ll fix it.”

Aside from the idea the Warren may be focused too sharply on policy details, others note that many voters may associate Warren with an event that worked against her: Her release of DNA results last October in a bid to prove her claims of Native American ancestry – which won her the derisive nickname “Pocahontas” from President Trump.

Warren ended up apologizing to the head of the Cherokee Nation in early February, amid claims that she had exaggerated her ancestry for personal gain. Then just days afterward, reports surfaced that Warren had claimed Native American heritage on a 1986 Texas State Bar registration form.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Finally, Warren – and yes, some other Democrats in the 2020 field -- faces an unfortunate historical fact: Voters seldom back U.S. senators for the presidency, preferring Congress members and governors instead.

When Sen. Barack Obama was elected in 2008, he became just the third sitting senator – behind Warren Harding and John F. Kennedy – to win the White House, Politico reported.

So the obstacles between Warren and the White House would seem to make her potential election as the nation’s first female president even more of an achievement.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Senior White House adviser Jared Kushner said Tuesday that a detailed plan for a merit-based immigration system will be presented to President Trump, giving priority to skilled immigrants rather than those with family ties to the U.S.

“I do believe that the president’s position on immigration has been maybe defined by his opponents by what he’s against as opposed to what he’s for,” Kushner said at the Time 100 Summit in New York City. “What I’ve done is I’ve tried to put together a very detailed proposal for him.”

KUSHNER: RUSSIA INVESTIGATION HAD ‘HARSHER IMPACT’ ON US THAN ELECTION MEDDLING

Kushner announced that the new immigration proposal, which Trump will receive this week or next, will resemble the point-based systems in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and will unify people by ensuring strong wages and secure borders while protecting humanitarian values.

“We want to protect our country’s humanitarian values. We want to make sure we’re reunifying families, and we want to do this in a way that allows our country to be competitive long term,” he said. “And my hope is we can really do something that unifies people around what we’re for on immigration.”

JARED KUSHNER RESPONDS AFTER HASAN MINHAJ CALLS OUT HIS TIES TO SAUDI PRINCE

Kushner denied in the same talk that he has clashed with White House staffer Stephen Miller, who’s seen as tougher on immigration than others, adding that the plan was concocted with the help of Miller and Kevin Hassett, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers.

“And I say that If that if I can get Stephen Miller and Kevin Hassett to agree on an immigration plan, then Middle East peace will be easy by comparison,” Kushner joked, referring to the Israel-Palestine peace plan he’s working on.

After the plan gets presented to Trump, it will likely undergo some changes and then he will decide when to proceed with it, Kushner said.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday said his government must make men aware of the dangers of poor hygiene after expressing dismay over the 1,000 penis amputations that apparently occur in his country each year.

“In Brazil, we have 1,000 penis amputations a year due to a lack of water and soap,” he said while speaking to reporters in Brasilia after visiting the Education Ministry. “We have to find a way to get out of the bottom of this hole.”

The far-right leader called the figure “ridiculous and sad,” Reuters reported. A spokeswoman for the Brazilian urology society told the news agency the number is based on its official data for penis amputations.

The amputations were conducted out of necessity over untreated infections, along with complications from HIV and various cancers, she said.

A top Russian diplomat says Russia is willing to negotiate a new nuclear weapons treaty with the United States and China.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters on Friday Moscow is closely following reports in the United States that the U.S. would like to reach a nuclear weapons deal with both Russia and China, and is “willing” to negotiate. The story was reported by CNN earlier Friday.

Ryabkov also said that Russia “would like to convince” the U.S. to adopt a joint statement that would condemn any use of nuclear weapons.

Ryabkov’s comments come just months after the U.S. withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, a cornerstone of the post-Cold War security, and Russia followed suit. Each claims breaches by the other.

Government dysfunction and an intelligence failure that preceded the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka are traced to simmering divisions between the president and prime minister after a weekslong political crisis that crippled the country last year.

The government has admitted to a “lapse of intelligence” after officials failed to act upon near-specific information received from foreign agencies. Suicide bombers exploded themselves last Sunday in three churches and three luxury hotels, killing 253 people and wounding 400 more. Authorities said eight Muslim militants blew themselves up at their targets while the wife of one of the attackers blasted herself on being rounded up by police.

The carnage has brought forth arguments that worshippers and holidaymakers fell victim to the rivalry and a lack of communication between the country’s two leaders — President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Cabinet led by Wickremesinghe says neither he nor his ministers were informed of the intelligence received by the defense authorities. Sirisena is the head of state, defense minister, minister in charge of the police and head of the armed forces. He also chairs the National Security Council, which includes the heads of security agencies and departments. Traditionally the prime minister also plays an important role on the council.

According to Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne, Sirisena has not included Wickremesinghe in national security affairs since a dispute between them came into the open in October last year. This is an unusual departure from the protocol, he said.

Senaratne said that Sirisena was overseas when the attacks took place and even after that, the National Security Council refused to meet with Wickremesinghe as he tried to give them instructions.

Sirisena has also said that he was not informed of the intelligence received and vowed to overhaul the leadership of the defense forces.

The top bureaucrat at the Defense Ministry, Hemasiri Fernando, has resigned at Sirisena’s insistence.

“It is a major factor,” said Jehan Perera, the head of local activist group National Peace Council, referring to the alleged lack of coordination between the leaders contributing to the failure to prevent the attacks.

“The primary responsibility has to be taken by the president, he did not give the information and he did not act,” Perera said. “He had the Ministry of Defense, took the police from the prime minister, chaired the National Security Council meetings and did nothing,” Perera said.

Kusal Perera, a journalist and political commentator, says security and intelligence officials should have acted on the information whether or not they received orders from politicians.

“If they (Wickremesinghe and his party) were not invited to the National Security Council, why did not they say in Parliament that they were not responsible for the security of the country any longer,” said Perera, who is not related to Jehan Perera.

“Saying that now is taking political advantage, not taking responsibility,” he said.

Sirisena and Wickremesinghe belong to different political parties but came together for Sirisena’s presidential campaign in 2015. Their relationships broke down and their differences exploded last year when Sirisena suddenly sacked Wickremesinghe as prime minister and appointed in his place former strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa, whom he defeated in the presidential election. The crisis crippled the country for more than seven weeks to the point of not being able to pass this year’s national budget on time.

A court decision compelled Sirisena to reappoint Wickremesinghe, but the two leaders have been rivals within the same government.

Rajapaksa, who is the minority leader in Parliament, blames the government for weakening intelligence and dropping its guard, which he had maintained to defeat the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels 10 years ago to end the 26-year-old civil war. He also criticized the government for the detention of intelligence officers accused of extrajudicial killings and abductions during the closing days of the war, which he said crippled the security apparatus before the bombings. According to conservative U.N estimates, some 100,000 people were killed in Sri Lanka’s conflict.

Sirisena summoned an all-party conference Thursday to which Wickremesinghe was also invited. At the conference, Sirisena stressed “setting aside all the political beliefs and difference (so that) everybody should collectively commit towards building a peaceful environment within the country,” a statement from his office said.

“It is not a secret that the disagreements between me and the government aggravated over the past two years,” Sirisena told the country’s media executives Friday. “One of the reasons for that is weakening of military intelligence and arresting military officials unnecessarily and my speaking up against it within and outside the government.”

Jehan Perera said that the security threat could prove politically advantageous to Rajapaksa and his family, with a presidential election scheduled at the end of this year. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, a younger brother of Mahinda, was the powerful defense secretary during his brother’s reign and has expressed his interest to join the contest.

“People are saying we want a stronger leader and they are talking about Gotabhaya. It (the blasts) has worked to their benefit,” Perera said.

Cyprus police are intensifying a search for the remains of more victims at locations where an army officer, who authorities say admitted to killing five women and two girls, allegedly had dumped their bodies.

Police said Friday’s search will concentrate on a military firing range, a reservoir and a man-made lake near an abandoned mine approximately 32 kilometers (20 miles) west of the capital Nicosia.

On Thursday, the 35-year-old suspect told investigators that he had killed four more people than he had previously admitted to. All the suspect’s alleged victims are foreign nationals.

Police have already found the bodies of a 38-year-old Filipino woman and two as yet unidentified women.

Search crews are now looking for the daughter of the 38-year-old, a Romanian mother and daughter and another Filipino woman.
