Taiwan March export orders seen dropping for fifth straight month: Reuters poll

TAIPEI (Reuters) – Taiwan’s export orders likely declined for a fifth month in March but at a slower pace than in the previous month, a Reuters poll showed, as a prolonged downturn in global tech demand hurts manufacturers in the trade-reliant economy.

The median forecast from the poll of 14 economists was for March export orders to drop 5.45 percent from a year earlier. Forecasts ranged from a decline of 10.3 percent to growth of 3.5 percent.

In February, Taiwan’s export orders fell 10.9 percent, the most in nearly three years due to cautious machinery orders from China as the United States-China trade dispute wears on, pointing to a further slowdown for the island’s economy.

Taiwan export orders are an indicator of demand for Asia’s hi-tech gadgets, and typically lead actual exports by two to three months.

Trump administration to allow lawsuits over seizures of US property in Cuba

The Trump administration intends to announce Wednesday that it will allow U.S. citizens to sue companies doing business in Cuba, according to a senior administration official.

Marking another break from Trump’s predecessors that threatens to upend relations with allies, the administration plans to enforce a provision of a 1996 law known as Helms-Burton that allows Cubans who fled Fidel Castro’s regime to sue companies that have used their former property on the island.

CUBA CITES LACK OF EVIDENCE IN MYSTERIOUS SONIC ATTACKS ON DIPLOMATS

Every president since Bill Clinton has suspended the section of the act that would allow such lawsuits because they could snarl companies from U.S.-allied countries – like the U.K., France and Spain – in years of complicated litigation that could prompt international trade claims against the United States.

The senior administration official said going forward, there will be no more waivers. The official spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of the official announcement.

The Trump administration has signaled plans to end the waivers. It's taking the step in retaliation for Cuba's support of embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom the U.S. is trying to oust in favor of opposition leader Juan Guaido.

White House National Security Adviser John Bolton plans to deliver a speech in Miami -- home to thousands of exiles and immigrants from Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua – criticizing those governments as a “troika of tyranny.”

The speech at the Bay of Pigs Veterans Association is being delivered on the 58th anniversary of the United States' failed 1961 invasion of the island, an attempt to overthrow the Cuban government.

Trump Smears Ilhan Omar as an Enemy of America

X

Story Stream

recent articles

President Trump has summoned Joseph Welch from the grave. Welch stood up to Sen. Joseph McCarthy in 1954 when the demagogic Wisconsin Republican smeared Welch's associate, Fred Fisher, as a communist sympathizer. When McCarthy persisted, Welch earned his way into every Bartlett's by saying, "Have you no decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?" McCarthy had none and neither does his heir in slime, Donald John Trump.

The latest proof is Trump's attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar, the Minnesota Democrat. Omar, whose true talent may be sloppy, irresponsible speech, clumsily referred to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks by saying "some people did something," which, taken out of context, shockingly trivialized mass murder. Predictably, her remarks were indeed taken out of context, first by the journalistically squalid New York Post and then by the object of its affections, the president of the United States.

The New York tabloid put a picture of the burning Twin Towers on its cover with the virtually neon headline, "Here's your something," and then, "2,977 people dead by terrorism." The New York Post is Trump's virtual brain trust. So it was no surprise that Trump followed up with a tweet declaring "WE WILL NEVER FORGET" along with a video showing Omar saying the offending words and segueing to images of Lower Manhattan after the terrorist attacks.

The White House was instantly criticized for that tweet as yet another attempt by Trump to incite hatred. Quickly, a good chunk of the flash mob that has materialized to seek the Democratic presidential nomination came to her defense without any of them suggesting that she think before she opens her mouth. She has, after all, said some doozies. "It's all about the Benjamins baby," she tweeted back in February, implying that overwhelming congressional support for Israel is bought by Jewish money. She apologized for the tweet. But then she told a D.C. audience that American supporters for Israel are pushing "for allegiance to a foreign country."

That was a shockingly dumb remark that Congress could not bring itself to condemn on its own. Instead, it subsumed into a general condemnation of everything vile: bigotry directed at "African Americans, Native Americans, and other people of color, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, immigrants and others." It is that "and others" that managed to render the whole exercise both silly and offensive.

Here is a fact: Omar was elected by 267,703 people in Minnesota. Here is another: There are 327.2 million people in America. Omar is a first-term congresswoman, chairperson of no committee, and should matter little. That she does matter is partly attributable to her being a political exotic and partly to her gift for offensive statements. If you listen to the entirety of her remarks about the 9/11 attacks, even if you want very much to find them offensive, you will come away uncertain. The supposedly clear case dissolves under scrutiny.

Actually, it was not Omar who denigrated those terrorist attacks. It was first Rupert Murdoch's New York Post and then his Fox News and finally Trump. They were the ones who exploited this horrid crime for political purposes. They are intent on making Omar the face of the Democratic Party -- a caricature that's thoroughly leftist, repellently anti-Semitic, frighteningly non-white and terrifyingly non-Christian. The end is nigh.

As Trump has repeatedly shown, he has no shame and he has no empathy. His continuing feud with the quite dead John McCain seems out of Shakespeare -- some deranged character haranguing the ghost of an old foe. Trump's inability to appreciate how intensely McCain suffered as a prisoner of war in Vietnam evinces a meanness and moral rottenness that shames both himself and the many in his party who look the other way.

But in the way a Typhoid Mary can spread a disease but is immune to it, so is Trump immune to shame. He has, though, infected the Republican Party. It has to know that Trump is exploiting the horror of 9/11 to rally the faithful for his reelection effort, but it says nothing. The party has become a kind of horror film, Republican after Republican arising from a swamp -- the living dead, marching toward political survival, lacking only a soul.

Ilhan Omar is both as important and unimportant as Fred Fisher, the young lawyer that McCarthy attacked and Welch defended. They were both meant to represent larger forces -- communism in Fisher's case and Islamism in Omar's case -- but they came instead to represent something their antagonists did not intend: victims of a shameful abuse of political power.

Democrats will rig 2020 primary against Bernie again, Michael Knowles says

Spread the love

Conservative commentator Michael Knowles, a show host at the Daily Wire and a Fox News opinion writer said Saturday on “Fox and Friends” that the Democratic Party will rig the 2020 primary against Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

“I’m not feeling the Bern,” Knowles said. “I think people have amnesia. They are forgetting that 12 years ago, Ron Paul raised exactly the same amount of money in exactly the same amount of time, $6 million in 24 hours. As you will recall, Ron Paul never won the GOP presidential nomination. Bernie Sanders will not win the Democrat nomination.”

He continued: “The problem for Bernie is that he’s a victim of his own success. Bernie Sanders has so successfully radicalized the Democrat party, brought it over to the extreme left, had it redefine itself along socialist lines that now the question is if every other candidate in the field is spouting the same sort of things that Bernie Sanders does, then why would anybody vote for Bernie Sanders?”

He added: “Especially today in a Democrat party that is obsessed with identity politics? If you’ve got the same radicalism from everybody, why would you vote for the fairly ancient old white guy?”

WATCH:

“Fortunately for Democrats, the party is so corrupt that they will probably just rig it again and keep Bernie Sanders out of the election,” he added. “What really helped Bernie in 2016 is that he was running as the anti-Hillary vote. He opposed Hillary Clinton and all of her empty promises and all of her wickedness.”

Indonesia March inflation seen at bottom of central bank target range: Reuters poll

March 29, 2019

JAKARTA (Reuters) – Indonesia’s annual inflation rate likely slowed for a fourth straight month in March to a decade low and hit the lower end of the central bank’s target range, according to a Reuters poll.

March’s annual inflation rate is forecast by 13 analysts to ease to 2.50 percent on year, compared with February’s 2.57 percent, and right at the floor of Bank Indonesia’s (BI) 2.5-4.5 percent target range.

If proven correct, the March reading would be the lowest since late 2009, Refinitiv Eikon data showed.

“The harvest that began at the end of February continued through the month so prices of produces were very low, but rising plane ticket prices might have driven inflation,” said Damhuri Nasution, chief economist of Danareksa Research Institute.

Low inflation readings in recent months have prompted a growing number of analysts to argue that BI has room to unwind its six interest rate hikes last year and take advantage of the dovish stance taken by the world’s major central banks.

However, Nasution cautioned against a premature rate cut by BI, saying inflation might accelerate later in the year if the government adjusts prices after the April 17 elections or if the El Nino weather pattern hits crops.

Bank Mandiri’s economist Andry Asmoro predicted inflation to bounce back to 3.79 percent at the end of the year.

Underpinning the current benign inflation are President Joko Widodo’s populist policies of keeping fuel and electricity tariffs flat, while maintaining food prices low by setting maximum retail prices for some foodstuffs and stocking enough supply through imports.

Widodo is running for re-election against retired general Prabowo Subianto in a rerun of the 2014 race.

At its latest policy meeting on March 21, BI predicted inflation would stay within its target range through 2019, while keeping rates unchanged.

In the poll, the March core inflation rate, which excludes government-controlled and volatile food prices, was seen at 3.06 percent or at the same pace as in February.

Tlaib continues call for Trump's impeachment, says he's 'most dangerous threat' to democracy

U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., is continuing to push for the impeachment of President Trump -- even after Special Counsel Robert Mueller has concluded there was no collusion with Russia.

The freshman Democrat, who caused an uproar within hours of being sworn into Congress with a profanity-laced call to charge the president with misconduct in office, is not backing down and is seeking support from her fellow progressives to back a resolution to effectively start the impeachment process.

Tlaib reportedly began circulating a letter Monday, just a day after Attorney General William Barr released a summary of Mueller's findings, in which she urged others to support the effort to investigate Trump’s “impeachable actions” following his inauguration in 2017.

TRUMP IMPEACHMENT BACKERS NOT GIVING UP AFTER MUELLER REPORT

“The actions of President Trump before he was officially sworn in as President of United States is [sic] currently being investigated by the Southern District of New York and much of it is part of the completed report by independent investigator, Robert Mueller,” she wrote in a letter, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

“However, the most dangerous threat to our democracy is President Trump's actions since taking the oath of office,” she continued.

“However, the most dangerous threat to our democracy is President Trump's actions since taking the oath of office.”

— U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich.

“The fact that President Trump has yet to comply with various clauses of our U.S. Constitution sets a dangerous precedent. Much of the allegations have yet to be fully investigated by this body who also took an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution."

She added: “I urge your support in recommending that the House Committee on Judiciary begin hearings, take depositions and issue subpoenas to answer this question that is fundamental to the rule of law and the preservation of our democracy.”

Multiple Democrats, such as U.S. Reps. Eric Swalwell and Adam Schiff, both of California, have vowed to continue investigating the White House even as the Mueller report cleared the president of collusion with Russia -- though they don’t portray their probes as a way to impeach the president.

At the same time, some leading advocates of impeachment have already announced that they will continue to push for it even in the wake of the Mueller report.

READ THE MUELLER REPORT FINDINGS

Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, who along with Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., introduced articles of impeachment against the president at the start of the year, tweeted Sunday that “impeachment is not dead.”

Green tweeted that Mueller's report “did NOT investigate bigotry emanating from the Presidency harming our country.”

He added: "The findings do NOT negate the President’s bigotry. As long as bigotry influences the President’s policies, I will continue to seek his impeachment. #ImpeachmentIsNotDead."

But Tlaib’s push is likely to be met with opposition from her own party’s leadership, which is skeptical at the prospect of trying to impeach the president.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shot down Democrats calling for impeachment in an interview earlier this month, warning the process just isn’t worth pursuing.

“I’m not for impeachment,” Pelosi told the Washington Post Magazine. “Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country.”

She added: “And he’s just not worth it.”

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries also dismissed Tlaib’s latest efforts, telling reporters on Monday that “We didn’t run on impeachment. We’re not focused on impeachment.”

MOSCOW/MINSK (Reuters) – Russia is confident it can soon resolve a problem of polluted Russian oil contaminating a major pipeline serving Europe and affecting supplies as far west as Germany, a senior official said on Friday at talks with importers about the issue.

Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin did not give a precise timeframe but Moscow has previously said it would pump clean oil to the border with Belarus from April 29, seeking to end a crisis hitting the world’s second-largest crude exporter.

Sorokin was speaking at talks with officials from Belarus, Poland and Ukraine in Minsk on the issue. Belarus said the issue had cost it $100 million, while analysts say alternative supply routes for refiners cannot fully fill the gap.

Poland, Germany, Ukraine and Slovakia have suspended imports of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline. Halting those supplies has knock-on effects further along the network.

The problem arose last week when an unidentified Russian producer contaminated oil with high levels of organic chloride used to boost oil output but which must be separated before shipment as it can destroy refining equipment.

Russia’s Energy Ministry said pipeline monopoly Transneft and other Russian companies had a plan to mitigate the effects of the contaminated oil. It did not give details.

Russian officials have said contaminated oil has already been pumped into storage in Russia and Friday’s talks would focus on how to partially withdraw the tainted crude from the Druzhba pipeline running via other countries.

The suspension cuts off a major supply route for Polish refineries owned by Poland’s PKN Orlen and Grupa Lotos, as well as plants in Germany owned by Total, Shell, Eni and Rosneft.

Some refiners have outlined plans for alternative supplies, but analysts say other routes cannot meet the shortfall.

OIL PRICES

Ukraine’s Ukrtransnafta suspended the transit of oil through the pipeline on Thursday, closing supplies via Druzhba’s southern route to Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

The pipeline issue, which has supported global oil prices, lifted Russian Urals crude differentials to an all-time high on Thursday.

With pipeline supplies to Europe shut, Russia faces a challenge of how to divert about 1 million barrels per day (bpd) that was meant to be shipped through the network to other destinations at the time when export capacity is at its limits.

State-run Russian Railways held talks with energy firms on using up to 5,000 rail tankers to transport crude, RIA news agency reported on Friday.

Concerns about the quality of Urals crude also caused delays in loadings at the Baltic port of Ust-Luga, when buyers refused to lift cargoes, resulting in a brief shutdown of the port on Wednesday and Thursday. An Ust-Luga official and traders said on Friday loadings had resumed.

Russian loading plans indicate it aims to boost Urals exports in May before the expiry of a deal on output cuts agreed with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, Reuters calculations and Energy Ministry data show.

The provisional loading plan for Russia’s Baltic Sea ports and Novorossiisk in May show exports rising to 10.7 million tonnes, the highest level in half a decade.

Minsk estimated its loss from lower oil product exports due to contaminated Russian oil at around $100 million, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported on Thursday, citing Belarusian state oil company Belneftekhim.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, in charge of government energy policy, said this week that those found responsible for contaminating the oil could be fined. He did not provide names.

(Reuters) – India has once again delayed the implementation of higher tariffs on some goods imported from the United States to May 15, a government official said on Friday.

The new tariff structure was to come into force from May 2, the spokeswoman said without citing reasons for the delay.

Angered by Washington’s refusal to exempt it from new steel and aluminum tariffs, New Delhi decided in June last year to raise the import tax from Aug. 4 on some U.S. products including almonds, walnuts and apples.

But since then, New Delhi has repeatedly delayed the implementation of the new tariff.

Trade friction between India and the U.S. has escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans earlier this year to end preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry for up to $5.6 billion worth of its exports to the United States.

In a further blow, U.S. on Monday demanded buyers of Iranian oil stop purchases by May or face sanctions, ending six months of waivers which allowed Iran’s eight biggest buyers including India to continue importing limited volumes.

One of Joe Biden’s newly-hired senior advisers has seemingly had a very recent change of heart.

Symone Sanders, a prominent Democratic strategist and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., staffer in 2016, was announced as one of the big-name members of Team Biden on Thursday.

But Sanders, who has also served as a CNN contributor, is seen in resurfaced footage from November 2016 expressing her opposition to a white person leading her party after Donald Trump’s election.

“In my opinion, we don’t need white people leading the Democratic party right now,” Sanders told host Brianna Keilar during a discussion on Howard Dean potentially becoming DNC chairman.

BIDEN HIRES FORMER BERNIE SANDERS’ SPOKESPERSON AS SENIOR ADVISER

“The Democratic party is diverse, and it should be reflected as so in leadership and throughout the staff, at the highest levels. From the vice chairs to the secretaries all the way down to the people working in the offices at the DNC,” she said.

Sanders wrapped up her remarks by saying: “I want to hear more from everybody. I want to hear from the millennials and the brown folks.”

Footage of the interview was resurfaced by RealClearPolitics.

After news of her hiring broke on Thursday, Sanders backed her new boss on Twitter.

TRUMP ASSESSES 2020 DEMS; TAKES SWIPES AT BIDEN, SANDERS; DISMISSES HARRIS, O’ROURKE; SAYS HE’S ROOTING FOR BUTTIGIEG

“@JoeBiden & @DrBiden are a class act. Over the course of this campaign, Vice President Biden is going to make his case to the American ppl. He won’t always be perfect, but I believe he will get it right,” she wrote.

The hiring of Sanders has been viewed as another indication of the expected tough fight that Biden and Sanders are in for as the two frontrunners battle a deep Democratic field.

While Sanders himself didn’t torch Biden as he jumped into the race, it’s clear that many of his progressive supporters view the former vice president as a threat.

Biden’s entry into the race – at least in the early going – sets up a battle between himself and Sanders, who thanks to his fierce fight with eventual nominee Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic nomination, enjoys name ID on the level of the former vice president.

BIDEN VOWS THAT ‘AMERICA IS COMING BACK,’ SPARKING ‘MAGA’ COMPARISONS

Justice Democrats — who also called Biden “out-of-touch” – is an increasingly influential group among the left of the party. They’ve championed progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York as well as Sanders. The group was founded by members of Sanders 2016 presidential campaign.

Biden has pushed back against the perception that he’s a moderate in a party that’s increasingly moving to the left. Earlier this month he described himself as an “Obama-Biden Democrat.”

And Biden said he’d stack his record against “anybody who has run or who is running now or who will run.”

Former Democratic National Committee chair Donna Brazile – a Fox News contributor – highlighted that “Joe Biden can occupy his own lane in large part because he’s earned it. He’s earned the right to call himself whatever.”

But she emphasized that “elections are not about the past, they’re about the future…I do believe he has the right ingredients. The question is can he find enough people to help him stir the pot.”

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, who is facing increased calls for her immediate resignation, remains in poor health and is not “lucid” enough to decide whether to step down, her attorney told reporters late Thursday.

Steve Silverman, speaking outside one of Pugh’s residences which was raided by the FBI and IRS earlier in the day, said the embattled city leader could make a decision as early as next week.

“She is leaning toward making the best decision in the best interest in the citizens of Baltimore City,” he said, adding that Pugh has “several options” to consider.

“She just needs to be physically and mentally sound and lucid enough to make appropriate decisions.”

BALTIMORE MAYOR CATHERINE PUGH, ON LEAVE AMID BOOK PROBE, HAS HOMES AND CITY HALL OFFICE RAIDED BY FEDS

Silverman said Pugh met with a doctor at home Thursday and plans to do so again Friday, the Baltimore Sun reported.

In the latest image-tarnishing scandal for struggling Baltimore, the first-term Democratic mayor faces accusations that she used children’s book deals to cover up kickbacks for favorable treatment as a state lawmaker and city leader that earned her roughly $800,000 over several years.

BALTIMORE’S ACTING MAYOR SAYS HE ‘WOULD HATE TO SEE’ EMBATTLED MAYOR RETURN AFTER BOOK SCANDALS

As a state senator, 69-year-old Pugh sold $500,000 worth of her self-published “Healthy Holly” illustrated paperbacks to the University of Maryland Medical System, a major state employer whose board she sat on for nearly 20 years.

UMMS reportedly paid Pugh for 100,000 copies of her books between 2011 and 2018 with the stated intention of distributing the books to schools and day care centers. But some 50,000 copies remain unaccounted for and officials are probing if they were even printed.

Pugh also made $300,000 in bulk sales to other customers including health carriers that did business with the city of Baltimore.

BALTIMORE CITY COUNCIL CALLS ON EMBATTLED MAYOR CATHERINE PUGH TO RESIGN IMMEDIATELY

The politically isolated Pugh slipped out of sight on April 1 after a hastily organized press conference where she called her no-contract book deals a “regrettable mistake.” That same day, Maryland’s governor called on the state prosecutor to investigate allegations of “self-dealing.”

Pugh took an indefinite leave of absence, citing her health deteriorating intensely after a bout with pneumonia.

On Thursday morning, agents with the FBI and IRS searched her two Baltimore homes, her City Hall offices, and a nonprofit organization she once led. The home of at least one of Pugh’s aides was also scoured.

Silverman said federal agents also served a subpoena at his law firm, retrieving Pugh’s original financial records. They did not seek any attorney-client privileged communications, he said.

Pugh’s attorney said she was “emotionally extremely distraught” following the searches by FBI and IRS agents.

“There was nothing incriminating that came out of her home,” Silverman said.

UMMS spokesman Michael Schwartzberg told reporters that the medical system received a grand jury witness subpoena seeking documents and information related to Pugh.

Other probes against Pugh include a review by the city ethics board and the Maryland Insurance Administration.

In recent weeks, the calls for Pugh’s resignation have intensified with the strongest voice coming from Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, who did not mince words after Thursday’s early morning raids.

“Now more than ever, Baltimore City needs strong and responsible leadership. Mayor Pugh has lost the public trust,” he said. “She is clearly not fit to lead. For the good of the city, Mayor Pugh must resign.”

Many of her fellow Democrats, including those on Baltimore’s demoralized City Council and state lawmakers, are also insisting that Pugh put the citizens’ interests above any attempt to preserve her political career.

City Council member Brandon Scott called the Thursday raids “an embarrassment to the city.”

However, only a conviction can trigger a mayor’s removal from office, according to the city solicitor. Baltimore’s mayor-friendly City Charter currently provides no options for ousting its executive.

Six of Pugh’s staffers joined her on paid leave earlier this month; three of them were fired this week by the acting mayor.

Pugh came to office in late 2016 after edging out ex-Mayor Sheila Dixon, who had spent much of her tenure fighting corruption charges before being forced to depart office in 2010 as part of a plea deal connected to the misappropriation of about $500 in gift cards meant for needy families.

She would certainly face a bruising 2020 Democratic primary if she were to return and run for reelection. Veteran City Council leader Bernard “Jack” Young, who is serving as acting mayor, said as she went on leave that he would merely be a placeholder. But this week, before the raids, he said “it could be devastating for her” if she tried to return.

Syria’s ambassador to the United Nations has blasted the United State and the European Union for imposing sanctions on his country, describing them as “economic terrorism.”

Bashar Ja’afari made his comments Friday in the Kazakh capital of Astana where Russia, Turkey and Iran held a new round of talks with the Syrian government and the opposition on steps to bring peace to the country.

His comments came as government-held parts of Syria are witnessing widespread fuel shortages that are largely the result of Western sanctions on Syria and its key ally Iran.

Ja’afari says: “This is economic terrorism that is escalating through unilateral economic measures.”

A final statement issued at the end of Astana’s 12th round rejected President Donald Trump’s formal recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over Syria’s occupied Golan Heights.
