Denver airport’s $14.5M taxpayer-funded sign busted after less than 2 years in use: reports

Denver International Airport built a wall of sorts -- a 1,000-foot-long collection of illuminated poles interrupted by large television screens for displaying ads -- but now the wall doesn't work right.

The $14.5 million government-funded Panasonic sign has broken down after only 16 months in operation, leaving many questioning if the sign will ever rake in enough ad dollars to recoup the large investment, according to a report.

LAX TRAVELERS WARNED ABOUT POSSIBLE MEASLES EXPOSURE AGAIN

The structure had been gradually deteriorating since being activated in 2017. The airport decided to shut off the “sticks” on April 5 until Panasonic can repair the problems, the Denver Post reported. The sign will still display advertisements on its large television screens in the meantime.

Panasonic received $11.5 from Denver International to build the sign and another $3 million to maintain it over 12 years, the Post reported. The airport grossed only $21,000 on its investment in 2018, prompting city officials to step in to ramp up ad sales, Denver's FOX 31 reported.

The Denver City Council hired an outside advertising firm, Outfront Media LLC, in February, to try to convince companies to place their ads on the multimillion-dollar sign. As per the contract, the airport will receive a minimum of $12,500 in monthly revenue until the sign begins to generate more revenue.

The airport will receive 67 percent of gross ad sales, the rest going to the firm, Denver International told FOX 31. However, the airport expects to generate revenue at a higher pace in the coming months, expecting $1.2 worth of ad sales by the end of the contract’s first year.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – South Korean government officials are expected to press for extending a sanctions waiver on Iran’s petroleum exports that expires in May on a visit to Washington this week.

South Korea’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs Yoon Kang-hyun and other leaders will meet with U.S. State Department officials on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss the waiver issued in November to keep buying Iranian oil in exchange for having reduced such purchases, the Seoul government said in a news release on Monday.

The Trump administration has unilaterally reimposed sanctions on Iran’s oil exports, the lifeblood of its economy, as it seeks to curb Tehran’s nuclear and missile ambitions and its influence Syria and other countries in the Middle East

Washington issued sanctions waivers for eight economies in November, including for South Korea, Iran’s fourth largest oil customer in Asia. But the administration has said it wants the exports to go to zero as quickly as possible.

The current U.S. goal is to reduce the number of sanctions waivers and to cut Iran’s oil exports about 20 percent, to below 1 million barrels of oil per day from May, sources said this month.

The South Korean officials will meet with the State Department’s top energy diplomat Francis Fannon on Thursday. On Wednesday they will meet with Brian Hook, the U.S. special representative for Iran, and David Peyman, the deputy assistant secretary of state for counter threat finance and sanctions. The State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the meetings.

Peyman met with South Korean officials in Asia earlier this month. He offered “to continue to closely consult on the extension of sanctions exemption and Korean companies’ technical issues regarding trade with Iran,” a statement from Seoul’s foreign ministry said at the time.

South Korea is a large buyer of a light oil called condensates from Iran and has told a former U.S. official that there are few options for getting the same quality of condensate from other suppliers.

South Korea’s oil imports from Iran fell 12.5 percent year-on-year in February, customs data showed this month.

Yonhap news agency quoted a South Korean official as saying that Seoul has had discussions since November with Washington on gaining an extended exception and that ending the purchases of condensates would affect its economy. “No extension means no imports of Iranian condensate,” an official told Yonhap.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Any trade deal between China and the United States should be a long-lasting one that is consistent with multilateralism and addresses structural factors like intellectual property, a senior International Monetary Fund official said on Friday.

Changyong Rhee, director of the IMF’s Asia and Pacific department, also said market optimism over the fate of trade talks between Washington and Beijing could mean that the failure to reach an agreement could trigger a sharp market reaction.

“What we’re worried is that if there is no agreement reached, the market can react quite negatively,” he told a news conference during the spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington.

Rep. Maxine Waters: Barr a ‘Lackey and a Sycophant’ for Trump

Rep. Maxine Waters Wednesday slammed Attorney General William Barr as a "lackey and a sycophant" for President Donald Trump and claimed he will submit a heavily redacted copy of special counsel Robert Mueller's report to Congress on Thursday.

"He was chosen to protect the president of the United States and that's exactly what he's doing," the California Democrat told MSNBC's Chris Hayes. "I'm not surprised. I'm not even disgusted because I knew that once he came out and he said there had been no obstruction of justice and no collusion, that he absolutely stepped out early to defend the president, to protect the president. I don't expect any reversal of that."

Late Wednesday, The Washington Post reported the report itself will be "lightly redacted," and that an even less redacted report will be released to congressional leaders.

Democrats, though, are crying foul as Barr and former acting Attorney General Rod Rosenstein plan to hold a press conference at about 9:30 a.m., almost two hours before the report itself will be released to members of Congress and then to the public.

“I never expected Barr to do anything that would be respectful to the members of Congress or to include us in any real way,” Waters, who chairs the House Financial Services Committee, told Hayes. "He auditioned for this job."

Waters said she hopes Mueller will come before Congress to present his side about the report, as "the president and his minions are absolutely ridiculous and they disrespect the members of Congress."

She also made another call for Trump's impeachment, telling Hayes he should have "been gotten rid of already."

Fla. Mayor Eyes 2020; Wants to Wipe Out Student Loan Debt

Miramar, Florida Mayor Wayne Messam, who will likely run for the Democratic nomination for president, wants to use his campaign to call for canceling over $1.5 trillion in student debt.

Messam announced his forming a presidential exploratory committee on Wednesday, saying in a telephone interview with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that the panel will help “ensure that once a decision” on running for president “is officially made, that we’re off to a sharp and a quick start.”

“The mayor firmly believes you cannot just move to debt free college when student loan debt is stifling the American dream today,” an aide to the mayor, who was re-elected to earlier this week, told BuzzFeed News. “We’re declaring it as an issue that threatens the economic security of this country. We don’t have to walk into another Great Recession.”

“We must resolve the 1.5 trillion in student loan debt and give Americans a chance at the American Dream,” the aide added to explain the mayor’s position. “Americans struggling to make ends meet should be the priority.”

Messam, a 44-year-old businessman who started a construction company before entering politics, was first elected mayor in 2015, and was the first African-American mayor in the city’s history. Earlier this week he won re-election with 86 percent of the vote, although only 8 percent of the city’s eligible voters actually voted, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

BEIRA, Mozambique (Reuters) – There have been five confirmed cases of cholera in Mozambique in the wake of a powerful tropical cyclone, a senior Mozambican health official said on Wednesday, adding that the disease would spread.

Health officials were also battling 2,700 cases of acute watery diarrhea – which could be a symptom of cholera – the official, Ussein Isse, said.

“We did the lab tests and can confirm that these five people test positive for cholera,” he said. “It will spread. When you have one case, you have to expect more cases in the community.”

Uganda denies backing Rwandan rebels as tensions grow

Uganda's president is denying support for rebels opposed to Rwanda's government as tensions rise between the two East African neighbors.

In a letter to Rwandan President Paul Kagame published on Tuesday in government-controlled media, President Yoweri Museveni says that "there is no question of Uganda supporting anti-Rwanda elements."

Museveni acknowledges he recently met with a member of a Rwandan opposition group in exile who spoke of "bad things" happening in Rwanda and who "wanted us to support them."

Rising tensions have led to fears of a possible armed conflict between the countries sharing strong ethnic and social ties.

Rwanda's government has closed a busy border crossing with Uganda, stranding traders in what Uganda describes as a trade embargo, as officials allege that anti-Kagame forces are receiving help in Uganda.

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.

Hundreds of Cuban migrants are reported to be on the run Friday in Mexico after a crowd of more than 1,000 burst out of a troubled immigration detention center on its southern border.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said the mass escape Thursday in Tapachula – which the Associated Press called the largest in recent memory — involved around 1,300 Cuban migrants, although 700 of them have since returned voluntarily.

The migrants reportedly streamed out of the compound without any resistance, as the institute said its agents weren’t armed and “there was no confrontation.”

Federal police with riot shields later rushed in to control the situation, as a crowd of angry Cubans whose relatives were being held at the facility gathered outside. The Cubans claimed their relatives reported overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at the facility.

BORDER PATROL UNION CHIEF BLASTS CONGRESS OVER MIGRANT CARAVANS: ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT’?

“My wife and child have been in there for 27 days in bad conditions,” said Usmoni Velazquez Vallejo, as he waited outside for news. “There is overcrowding, insufficient food and there isn’t even medicine for them.”

Another Cuban detainee told the AFP: “We have many there… we are very tight, we sleep on the floor.”

It’s the third time since October that migrants at the facility staged an uprising, according to the news agency.

The center’s holding capacity is officially listed at less than 1,000 people, but the escape of 1,300 meant it was probably at least at double its capacity, since not everyone being held there escaped. Residents in the area said that sometimes the facility has held as many as 3,000 people, and a Mexican newspaper cited by Reuters said Haitians and Central Americans also are among the large group who still have not been tracked down.

Earlier in the day, Mexico’s top human rights official toured the facility.

Elsewhere in the country, a new caravan estimated to contain up to 10,000 migrants is making its way to the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

The Washington Post’s media critic went into meltdown after White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders held a mock press briefing for the children of White House journalists and employees on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

Erik Wemple, the newspaper’s chief media critic, slammed Sanders and the White House for organizing a fun day on Thursday for junior would-be journalists, while not holding an actual press conference for the record number of days.

WHITE HOUSE STAFF TO SKIP CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER AFTER LAST YEAR’S CONTROVERSY

Wemple wrote that Sanders gave to children an important lesson of “the centrality of nonaccountability mechanisms in the affairs of state” after she announced that the mock press briefing was “off the record.”

“When the children head home tonight, perhaps they can pull up archival footage to see how their questions stack up against ye olde press briefings,” he added.

“Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

“Tuesday, after all, marked a record for number of days without a White House press briefing. Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

While some correspondents praised the White House for doing “a lot of work to welcome the children and provide “them an excellent experience,” other journalists echoed Wemple’s criticism and pointed out that Sanders hasn’t held a press briefing in over 40 days.

“Kids of WH Press Corps members are getting ready for a briefing with  @PressSec. Their parents have not had one in 45 days,” tweeted CBS News’ White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang.

REPORTER SHOUTS AT SARAH SANDERS AFTER BRIEFING: ‘DO YOUR JOB, SARAH!’

“The irony of it is that they’re pretending that the White House press briefing is a thing, and they’re pretending that this is how the White House operates, but this is not at all how the White House operates … It’s a relic of an earlier time,” another correspondent quoted by the Post said.

The Post struck a different tune in a column earlier this year, which declared that despite the administration’s criticism of the media, President Trump was “extremely accessible.”

Wemple quoted Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project, who said that Trump held 338 “short question-and-answer” sessions over his time in office, significantly more than 75 such sessions by former President Barack Obama during his first full two years in office.
