GESIOTTO: Media’s Stages Of Grief Over Mueller Report Are Playing Out On Live TV

Madison Gesiotto | Contributor

When the news dropped that Robert Mueller had submitted his report to Attorney General Bill Barr without any further indictments, liberal pundits had to process their dismay on live television, and the result was a combination of hysteria, disbelief, and denial.

Chris Matthews, for instance, famously felt a thrill go up his leg over Barack Obama in 2009, but he seemed to feel a chill going down his spine as he reported that Mueller would not be making any further indictments.

The MSNBC host was in rare form Friday night, angrily biting off each word as he demanded to know, “Why. Was there never. An interrogation. Of this president.”

Matthews refused to believe that the “experts” who have been assuring him and his liberal audience for nearly two years that Mueller’s investigation would result in criminal charges against President Trump could have been wrong the whole time.

Matthews long ago determined in his own mind that the president is guilty of obstruction of justice and collusion, and the “experts” he hosts on his show have reinforced that conclusion so firmly that Matthews seemed genuinely unable to understand why Mueller did not file any charges against Donald Trump, asking, “How can they let Trump off the hook?”

The host was particularly incensed that President Trump never had to “sit down with the Special Counsel Mueller and answer his damn questions,” wondering, “How can that happen?!”

Matthews was obviously experiencing the second stage of grief, which is anger. His MSNBC colleague, Rachel Maddow, on the other hand, expressed her anguish somewhat differently. Apparently, she was still stuck in the first stage, which is denial.

“Our job tonight as a country sort of — or at least what everybody in the country is going to be doing tonight, is trying to figure out what it means that the report of special counsel Robert Mueller has finally been submitted,” Maddow said near the beginning of her show, in between pained facial expressions.

“In terms of what that means and what Mueller found, we know only the smallest little bits,” she added. “This is the start of something, apparently, not the end of something.”

That assessment is a comical mix of wishful thinking and delusion. The fact that Mueller submitted his report means only one thing: that he’s finished with his investigation. Maddow is probably correct that “this is the start of something,” since Democrats in Congress have made it clear that they plan to subject President Trump to endless investigations in the hopes of uncovering something that Mueller couldn’t, but the Mueller probe is over, no matter how cartoonishly Maddow grimaces.

In between the Matthews and Maddow meltdowns, a stone-faced Jim Acosta went on CNN to discuss the “glee” that the President’s supporters are feeling now that Mueller has submitted his report and will not pursue any additional indictments.

Acosta very evidently didn’t share in that glee, sounding as though he was on the verge of gagging when he quoted a Trump campaign advisor as saying that “this is a great day for America.”

To wash the taste of MAGA out of his mouth, Acosta immediately pivoted to speculating that Mueller’s report might still contain damaging information about President Trump. Realizing that such a long-shot hypothetical circumstance probably offered cold comfort to CNN viewers, Acosta also interjected that “we still don’t know the conclusion of what’s happening in the Southern District of New York,” then reminded his audience that Democrats in Congress will accuse the administration of a cover-up if so much as a single word is redacted from the Mueller report when it is released to the public.

This is despite the fact that Acosta and congressional leaders are well aware that information derived from grand jury testimony and a host of other sources cannot be disclosed by the attorney general.

The mixture of sputtering outrage, wishful thinking, and excuse-making that pervaded the cable news networks Friday night reveals that even the most liberal partisans know that Mueller’s report will be the death knell of the Russia collusion hoax they’ve been perpetuating since before Mueller was even appointed.

They’ll sort through their grief eventually through the next stages, but that won’t end their public displays of humiliation, evidently.

Cartel member leads Mexican authorities to secret mass grave

A tip from a cartel member led Mexican police to a secret site containing more than 30 graves in the state of Veracruz.

Each grave may contain several people, Mexican authorities said, according to The Daily Mail.

The site covers such a large area that Jorge Winckler, the Veracruz State attorney general, said, 'We will begin the extraction of remains, but we do not know how long it will take us.”

Workers began digging up the area on Wednesday, and have only recovered remains from about 10 percent of the entire area were many more graves are believed to be, the newspaper said.

Secret mass graves have become commonplace in Mexico, where tens of thousands of people are reported missing. Cartels tend to be behind the secret grave sites, where they discard people they kidnapped or rivals they have killed.

Lucia Diaz, whose son, Guillermo Lagunes Dias, has been missing since he was kidnapped in 2013, was quoted by The Daily Mail as saying: 'It shows what we already know -- that Veracruz is strewn with corpses. That is the reality of the state and of Mexico.”

CRUELTY OF EL CHAPO'S SINALOA CARTEL KNOWS NO BOUNDS

The discovery of the mass grave in Veracruz comes just days after Mexican officials confirmed the discovery of up to 30 bodies in clandestine burial sites in the state of Sonora.

In this Feb. 27, 2011, photo, state police guard the site where at least 5 bodies were found in a clandestine grave in Santa María Tlalmanalco on the outskirts of Mexico City. Veracruz has been the scene of bloody turf battles between the Zeta and Jalisco drug cartels, but the state also has suffered waves of kidnappings and extortions. In September, authorities found a mass grave -- one of the largest in recent years -- with 168 human skulls in Veracruz State. Prosecutors found the field after a witness told them that "hundreds of bodies" were buried there. Investigators used drones, probes and ground-penetrating radar to locate the pits.

Violence in Mexico has worsened in the last year, with homicides running at their highest rate on record and surpassing the previous peak set in 2011.

Earlier this month, a woman with gunshot wounds was executed inside an ambulance in Mexico’s Pacific state of Guerrero, and paramedics were reportedly beaten by the perpetrators.

Recently, the archdiocese of the central state of Puebla said in a statement that Rev. Ambrosio Arellano Espinoza, a 78-year-old priest, was apparently tortured during a robbery attempt. It said he had been found with severe burns on his hands and feet, but was at a hospital in stable but serious condition.

While hundreds of mass grave sites date back to the height of the drug war from 2010 to 2016, some are more recent.

James Cracknell becomes oldest Boat Race winner at 46

James Cracknell became the oldest winner of the Boat Race at age 46 on Sunday when Cambridge beat Oxford by one length in the 165th edition on the River Thames.

The double Olympic gold medalist — a Peterhouse College masters student — is eight years older than the previous record holder, 1992 Cambridge cox Andy Prober.

Cracknell has recovered after suffering a traumatic brain injury when he fractured his skull in a cycling accident in Arizona in 2010.

Before the Cambridge men won for the third time in four years, the university's women's team beat Oxford for a third year in a row.

Michael Moore Destroys Pelosi: Her ‘Old Tired Privileged Ways Are Over’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi needs to step aside and let the far-left take over the Democrat Party, said far-left filmmaker Michael Moore.

Moore tore into Pelosi after her “60 Minutes” interview on Sunday where she bashed socialism, the far-left wing of her party, and their policy proposals.

“White people. Nobody likes giving up power. And they never see the writing on the wall. The new day arrives and no one has the heart to tell them they and their old tired privileged ways are over,” Moore tweeted Monday.

Pelosi ripped into socialism and the Democrats’ de facto leader Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, saying the far-left wing of the party consisted of “like five people,” when in reality dozens of Dem lawmakers voted with her 95% of the time since January.

“I do reject socialism as an economic system. If people have that view, that’s their view. That is not the view of the Democratic Party,” Pelosi said.

“By and large, whatever orientation [House Democrats] came to Congress with, they know that we have to hold the center, that we have to go down the mainstream.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is now being criticized for changing her tone while speaking to a group of African Americans. Alex Jones calls in from the road to break down the condescending attitude now common on the left.

Media Can’t Admit Spying Because They Are Complicit

LAURA INGRAHAM: The media reaction to barr was what you would expect. Three outlets, particularly burned by the shifting Mueller narrative, were quick to paint the AG's comments as purely political. CNN's Manu Raju tweeting: "Barr's comments here bound to please Trump." "The Washington Post" Aaron Blake tweeting: "The use of 'spying' is obviously a loaded term and one Trump favors." An MSNBC legal analyst Cynthia Oxney offered this: "I think that is crazy. Obviously, Barr feels the need to curry favor with Trump, and I don't understand why a man of his standing and reputation would feel the need to count on to the president in such a way."

Was Cynthia upset when old Eric Holder said he was Obama's wingman? Here to react, Mollie Hemingway, senior editor at The Federalist. I've never seen anything like this, I call them the smear squads. It's not just the cable talkers. You are seeing people like Leon Panetta and Chris Coons, reasonable people.

MOLLIE HEMINGWAY: It is interesting if you watch Attorney General Barr, he is so calm, so sober, so evenhanded. He is not saying anything extreme, just stating the facts as they are known, and contrary to what we just heard, there is no dispute about whether there was spying or not. That is a common way to describe what happened. They use multiple human informants. There were wiretaps and other electronic surveillance, there were national security letters. If it were about anything other than the Trump campaign, we would all acknowledge that is spying. That is a good word to use to sum up what was going on there.

The media can't use that word because they were complicit in this operation in two ways. One, the perpetuated the Russia collusion hoax. They accepted these leaks. They were not critical about them at all. They claimed they had all these bombshells. On one side, they gave into the hoax. On the other hand, they never covered what was troubling about the actions by these federal agents, not just the FBI, but other agencies, to go against domestic political opponents.

LAURA INGRAHAM: They are supposed to be civil libertarians that care about American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU should have been leading the charge for Americans' privacy.

MOLLIE HEMINGWAY: There are a lot of people that should care about this but are unable to because they are obsessed with hating Trump.

LAURA INGRAHAM: Your friend, [former CIA director John] Brennan, until 5 minutes before the report came out, was still basically saying that Putin was spooning with Trump. He said this today.

JOHN BRENNAN: Over the past several weeks, I have been very disappointed in Attorney General Barr. I had higher expectations for him. He shaped the narrative after the Mueller report. He, in fact, also had a testimony today that I think was very carefully nuanced as a way to try to support Donald Trump's positions. He acted more like a personal lawyer for Donald Trump today, rather than the Attorney General.

LAURA INGRAHAM: You wrote today in "The Federalist," he actually briefed -- Brennan briefed Harry Reid on this ongoing operation. A lot of people don't know that, tell us.

MOLLIE HEMINGWAY: He separately briefed Harry Reid from the rest of the gang of eight. Harry Reid said he understood he was getting a separate briefing so he could publicize the Russia investigation during the 2016 campaign. People who care about election meddling should care about that story. We haven't really even begun to investigate how Brennan, Clapper, other intel chiefs were involved in this narrative, not just during the election but also the first two years of the administration.

There is truth in what he says there, he's troubled by Barr going against the narrative that they set. They put a lot of work into a narrative that is being blown up just by people saying obvious facts, such as, that what was spying and we should make sure we don't do this against domestic political opponents. I get the feeling Barr is the adult who came in and said, okay, you've had your games, we are going to try to restore the credibility of the FBI and Department of Justice now.

LAURA INGRAHAM: Conservatives really believe this was an effort to take down Trump, before and after the election, but now it hasn't worked so now they have to take down Barr. They have to clear the decks of anyone, almost deprive Trump of a staff.

MOLLIE HEMINGWAY: Of having an Attorney General? Which is a threat to the constitutional republic because we believe that we have political accountability for agencies.

Utah teacher forces student to wash off Ash Wednesday cross

A teacher in the predominantly Mormon state of Utah was placed on administrative leave after she forced a Catholic student to wash off the Ash Wednesday cross from his forehead.

William McLeod, 9, had just returned to his school near Salt Lake City after attending Catholic mass when his fourth-grade teacher called the ash marking "inappropriate" and gave him a hand wipe to clean it off in front of his classmates, grandmother Karen Fisher said.

At first William explained that he couldn't remove it because it was important for the beginning of Easter but eventually obliged, Fisher said.

"He went to see the school's psychologist crying," said Fisher. "He was embarrassed."

The incident at Valley View Elementary in Bountiful, Utah, is being taken very seriously and an investigation into whether disciplinary action will be levied against William's teacher has been opened, said Davis School District spokesman Chris Williams. In the meantime, she isn't teaching, he said.

"The actions were unacceptable," Williams said. "No student should ever be asked or required to remove an ash cross from his or her forehead."

The teacher, Moana Patterson, was called into a meeting with the principal about the incident, Williams said. After that meeting, she called Fisher to apologize, he said.

Fisher, who lives with William, said Patterson gave a handwritten note and candy bar to William as an apology.

Patterson didn't immediately return an email seeking comment about the incident.

Williams said he doesn't know Patterson's religious affiliation.

In Utah, Catholics are the minority. The 330,000 Catholics in the state account for about 10 percent of the population, according to Jean Hill at the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City.

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints account for about two-thirds of the state. The faith's headquarters are in Salt Lake City.

Mormons celebrate Easter, but don't observe Ash Wednesday, a Christian holy day of prayer and repentance that falls on the first day of Lent, six weeks before Easter. The use of ash is a sign of mortality and has a long history in Christian and Jewish worship.

"We understand that mistakes happen," Hill said in a statement. "The diocese is also very grateful to the young student who used the situation to educate his teacher about a part of his faith and its importance to him."

Fisher said Patterson asked if she could reapply the ashes herself. "I told her that's not how it works," Fisher said.

The school district's director of educational equity, who happens to ordained as a Catholic deacon, came to the school to reapply the ashes, Williams said.

"Learning about one another is one way we build community across religious, political, racial, ethnic and other borders," Hill said.

This version of the story clarifies that the Catholic deacon is a member of the school district.

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – The grounding of India’s Jet Airways is turning into a quick windfall and long-term opportunity for international airlines keen to scoop up nearly a million outbound passengers from what was once the nation’s biggest airline.

Jet, which previously had a fleet of around 120 largely Boeing Co planes, was forced to indefinitely halt all flight operations on April 17 after its banks rejected the carrier’s plea for emergency funds.

The carrier’s descent into crisis has benefited international airlines in the form of rising fares and demand, data showed.

Fares from India to cities such as Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Bali in the first quarter of 2019 rose between 4 percent and 32 percent from a year ago, according to Indian travel portal MakeMyTrip Ltd.

In the peak travel months of May and June, fares to London have spiked as much as 36 percent and tickets to San Francisco are up nearly 20 percent from a year ago, according to data from travel portal Yatra.com.

“For the next three months it’s actually bonanza time for international players,” said Ashish Nainan, a research analyst at CARE Ratings. “At least until the middle of June, the fares are not going to come down.”

Due to rising demand, even before Jet’s lessors grounded planes, carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines Ltd and United Airlines saw an up to a 27 percent increase in passenger numbers from India in the last quarter of 2018, data from India’s aviation regulator showed. That is the latest period for which the data is available.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, clocking 15-20 percent domestic growth in recent years. It has long had only two full-service long-haul carriers, state-run Air India and Jet.

Jet is now hoping to be bailed out by a new investor, with final bids due on May 10.

INCREASING CAPACITY

Before its grounding, Jet had the biggest share of India’s outbound international air traffic, carrying 12 percent of the 7.8 million passengers headed overseas in the Oct-Dec quarter, down from 14 percent a year earlier, data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.

For an interactive graphic on Jet’s market share, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2WvDQYi

For an interactive graphic on average daily flights by the airline, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2FeFDel

The total number of passengers traveling overseas with Jet fell 10 percent during the last quarter of 2018 even as the outbound travel market grew about 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines posted a 27 percent increase in passengers from India, Cathay registered 17 percent growth and British Airways saw a 10 percent rise in the same period.

Cathay said the events at Jet combined with increasing demand for travel had led it to deploy larger aircraft with more seats on some Indian routes.

“In the long term we would certainly like to be able to offer more capacity into India, not just on our existing routes but by establishing new services to secondary cities,” Cathay said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines, in an email to Reuters, said the Indian market is “very promising” but declined to give details of airfare levels or demand patterns in the wake of Jet’s exit, citing a quiet period before the release of its annual results.

DOMESTIC GAINS

Jet’s grounding has also had a big impact on the domestic market, with inter-city air fares to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata soaring more than 20 percent in May and June, according to Yatra.com.

The spike in fares is expected to underpin strong earnings for IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd, which are set to report results for the quarter ended March 31 in the coming weeks.

“Domestic Indian carriers are the main benefactors, but I suspect if Jet fails to be revived by May 10 then Vistara and other airlines that ply international routes, particularly the lucrative Gulf market, are the main winners,” said Shukor Yusof, the head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics. Vistara is a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

Inadequate bilateral traffic rights between India and other countries, however, could be an impediment to foreign carriers’ hopes of winning business lost by Jet, some analysts said.

“Even before Jet’s operational shutdown, international capacity was significantly constrained,” said Kapil Kaul, CEO for South Asia of consultancy CAPA. “We have now more serious capacity challenge … this is unlikely to be stabilized in the near term.”

A new national government likely to be in place sometime after elections end in May is expected to address the international capacity constraints, and once bilateral agreements are eased airlines including Emirates, Turkish and Qatar would immediately benefit, said Kaul.

“We would love to add more flights but we are at the limit of the allocation granted to us for traffic rights,” Emirates Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori told reporters in Dubai on Wednesday.

(Reuters) – AstraZeneca Plc beat first-quarter sales and earnings expectations on Friday as the British drugmaker benefited from a push into cancer drugs and emerging markets including China.

Newer treatments such as lung cancer drug Tagrisso, now the company’s top selling medicine, have helped the drugmaker’s return to growth after years of crumbling sales due to patent losses on older drugs.

Sales in China have shown explosive growth, more than doubling since 2012, but AstraZeneca executives on Friday said that may not be sustained.

“The enormous growth you currently see in China, 28 percent, probably is not sustainable, but we feel very bullish that the growth will continue to be at a pace of between 15 percent and 20 percent,” Ruud Dobber, executive vice president, BioPharma, told Reuters.

Shares of the company were down 0.2 percent at 5,878 pence at 1031 GMT.

The turnaround in AstraZeneca’s fortunes has been powered by a push into cancer treatments led by Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, who saw off a 2014 takeover bid from Pfizer in part by promising annual sales of $45 billion by 2023.

In the first quarter, sales from its oncology unit rose 59 percent to $1.89 billion, accounting for 35 percent of total product sales.

The company has moved deeper into cancer therapy market through wide-ranging deals, including those for immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Last month, it agreed a multi-billion dollar oncology deal with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd.

“We’re reaching that point where after years of having to keep faith, we have actually got something tangible to believe in,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett said.

AstraZeneca also backed its annual sales and earnings forecast and said it has extensively prepared for UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union, even in the event of a no-deal exit.

The company has already spent more than 40 million pounds ($52 million) on Brexit preparations, including stockpiling six weeks’ worth of drugs in the UK and four weeks in continental Europe to guard against shortages.

AstraZeneca said product sales rose 14 percent at constant currency to $5.47 billion in the quarter, led by its lung cancer drug Tagrisso and respiratory treatment Pulmicort.

China sales increased by 28 percent to $1.24 billion in the quarter, accounting for nearly a quarter of overall product sales.

Core earnings came in at 89 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts on average were expecting core earnings of 85 cents per share and product sales of $5.29 billion, according to a company provided consensus of 19 analysts.

It’s the type of crime that doesn’t happen every day.

Police in the suburbs of Philadelphia say three suspects broke into a medical facility in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, last Saturday and fled with 18 colonoscopies – devices used for examining the health of patients’ colons.

The devices were reportedly worth a total of about $450,000, authorities said.

But police were perplexed about what the suspects might have planned to do with the instruments.

“This is not something that a typical pawn shop might accept,” Lower Merion Police Detective Sergeant Michael Vice told Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV. “My feeling would be that it was some type of black market sales.”

Such a market apparently does exist, Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath told Philly.com.

“They appeared to know precisely where to go, and they pried the door open,” McGrath said of the suspects, who were captured on surveillance video leaving the facility, carrying bulging backpacks.

Police are hoping the suspects will be caught in the end.
