Billionaire Steyer Launches Post-Mueller Ad for Impeachment

Billionaire Democratic donor Tom Steyer is launching a new 30-second television ad urging that President Donald Trump be impeached, Politico is reporting.

The ad is costing Steyer’s Need to Impeach group $325,000. It will be shown nationally on MSNBC and CNN and on Fox News, CNN and MSNBC in the Washington, D.C. area, according to Politico.

In the ad, Steyer holds up the report by special counsel Robert Mueller and says:  "It's all here: 10 detailed acts of obstruction of justice. Robert Mueller's report lays out a road map for impeachment proceedings against this president, and challenges Congress to do its job. I'm Tom Steyer, and we can't let this president destroy the public trust, break his oath of office and get away with it. Congress has to do its job and hold him accountable. Please call them at this number. Tell them to get going."

Growth of Germany’s foreign population slows in 2018

The number of foreigners living in Germany increased by 2.7% last year, a slower rate than in previous years although there was a marked increase in the number of non-European Union citizens with work permits.

The Federal Statistical Office said Monday that nearly 10.92 million people with only foreign citizenship were registered residents at the end of 2018 in Germany, a country of 83 million. That was up from 10.62 million in 2017.

Germany's foreign population grew 11.7% in 2015 and 10.2% in 2016 amid an influx of migrants from conflicts in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere. It grew 5.8% in 2017.

The statistical office said some 266,000 non-EU citizens had work permits in Germany at the end of last year, up from 217,000 a year earlier.

Chicago Police Union President: Kim Foxx should step down, Smollett case was ‘tip of the iceberg’

The Jussie Smollett case was the 'tip of the iceberg' in regard to mishandlings by Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx, according to Chicago Police Union President Kevin Graham, who has joined a chorus of those calling for her resignation.

Graham said during an appearance on "America's Newsroom" on Friday that Foxx's shocking decision to drop all 16 charges against Jussie Smollett last week represents a trend by the State's Attorney of choosing not to pursue felony charges.

"We have had problems getting felony charges approved for battery to police officers," Graham said. "I've had officers, in my office, where their kneecaps were broken, where their fingertips were nearly bit off, and we can't get felony charges approved on this."

He continued by discussing the Fraternal Order of Police's recent vote of no confidence on the State's Attorney, which indicates the group's pointed lack of support in Foxx.

"We're saying: this is enough," Graham continued. "We're asking for her to step down, the FOP in Chicago took a vote of no confidence and so did the police chiefs around Cook County."

In response to the no-confidence vote, Foxx issued a statement standing firm in her value and dedication to the position, while hinting that she may plan to seek re-election when her term is up.

"I was elected by the people of Cook County to pursue community safety, prevent harm, and uphold the values of fairness and equal justice,” Foxx said in the statement obtained by the Chicago Tribune. “I’m proud of my record in doing that, and I plan to do so through the end of my term and, if the people so will it, into the future.”

Graham recognized that the rising pressure on Foxx to resign can't exactly force her to do so.

JUSSIE SMOLLET WON'T REIMBURSE CHICAGO'S INVESTIGATION COSTS; CITY VOWS CIVIL SUIT

CHICAGO SEEKS $130G FROM JUSSIE SMOLLETT AS ACTOR'S LEGAL TEAM DEMANDS APOLOGY FROM MAYOR, POLICE CHIEF

"If she steps down, she'd have to do it on her own," he said. "But we'd like to have her step down and have someone in there who is actually going to prosecute cases. We want her to do her job."

An additional layer of the Smollett controversy is the possibility of a civil suit being filed against the "Empire" actor for refusing to repay the city for the cost of the investigation into his allegedly false claims that he was the victim of a homophobic, racist attack last month.

According to Graham, the city spent more than $130,000 in overtime alone for officers investigating Smollett's claims.

Smollett's lawyer Mark Geragos issued a statement in response, saying that his client refused to be "intimidated" by the suit and be further victimized by claims that he fabricated the story about the alleged attack.

"Mr. Smollett will not be intimidated into paying the demanded sum," Geragos said. "Your claim that Smollett files a false police report and orchestrated his own attack is false and defamatory."

In response to the civil suit, Graham said it would be wise for Smollett to just pay the fine and move forward with his life.

"It would be my advice that Mr. Smollett should pay that money and move on," he said. "I think he already got a huge break, and we believe there is going to be a federal investigation. We certainly called for one."

February 27, 2019

PARIS (Reuters) – “Birdman” and “21 Grams” director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu will head the jury at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, becoming the first Mexican to do so, organizers said on Wednesday.

Inarritu, 55, won the best director award in Cannes in 2006 for “Babel”, a film with a web of narratives spanning three continents and exploring cultural prejudices.

He also won back-to-back best director Oscars in 2014 and 2015, for “Birdman”, a black comedy about a washed-up actor starring Michael Keaton, and “The Revenant”, which featured Leonardo DiCaprio as a bear trapper battling the elements in the American wilderness.

“Cannes embraces all types of cinema, and through the presence of… Babel’s director, it is Mexican cinema that the Festival will be celebrating,” organizers including Pierre Lescure, President of the Festival de Cannes, said in a statement.

They cited “Carne y Arena” (Flesh and Sand) – a virtual reality project showing life as an immigrant and presented by Inarritu at Cannes in 2017 – as a recent highlight of work he has launched in France.

Other jury members for the 72nd edition of the festival, which runs from May 14 to 25, will be announced at a later date.

Inarritu succeeds Australian actress Cate Blanchett as jury head. Last year the top “Palme d’Or” award went to “Shoplifters”, by Japanese director Kore-eda Hirokazu.

Inarritu is among a trio of Mexican film directors who have risen to global prominence in recent years, alongside Alonso Cuaron, who won this year’s best director Oscar for “Roma”, and Guillermo del Toro, whose feature “The Shape of Water” won the best picture Oscar in 2018.

Ohio police peg person of interest in case of missing boy, 14

The search for an Ohio teen who disappeared on Saturday has shifted to a criminal investigation, with police ID'ing a person of interest in the case.

Jonathan Minard, 14, was last seen working on a farm in New Harrisburg, about eight miles from his home in Dellroy.

According to investigators, Minard was helping his 29-year-old friend on the dairy farm of the friend's dad when he began to complain of a toothache, The Canton Repository reported. The pair are said to have headed to the friend’s home to call the teen's mother.

Williams said that investigators have now identified a person of interest. He is described as a 29-year-old man with a criminal record, consisting of mainly drug offenses, Fox 8 reported.

It was not immediately clear if the person of interest was Minard’s friend from the farm.

Minard has blue eyes and brown hair. He is 5-foot-7 and weighs about 145 pounds. Police say he was last seen wearing a blue hoodie, brown pants and boots.

March 12, 2019

(Reuters) – World number two Simona Halep was run ragged and ultimately dumped out of the BNP Paribas Open by Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova 6-2 3-6 6-2 in the fourth round at Indian Wells on Tuesday.

Halep, who received medical treatment for blisters on her foot during the match, won less than half of her first-service points and hit just six winners to go with 36 unforced errors.

The win was 19-year-old Vondrousova’s first over a top-10 player in six attempts.

Vondrousova will face either Elina Svitolina or Ashleigh Barty in the quarter-finals.

Another teenager, unseeded Canadian Bianca Andreescu, upset 18th seed Wang Qiang of China 7-5 6-2 to book her place in the quarters.

The win was the 18-year-old Andreescu’s 25th of the year, the most of any WTA player.

She will face Garbine Muguruza for the first time after the Spaniard battled back to dispatch Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands 5-7 6-1 6-4.

April 26, 2019

By James Davey

LONDON (Reuters) – With Sainsbury’s dream of creating Britain’s biggest supermarket group in tatters, its chastened CEO Mike Coupe needs to reassure investors he has the plan to arrest a sales decline when he presents annual results next week.

Britain’s competition regulator blocked Sainsbury’s 7.3 billion pound ($9.4 billion) takeover of Walmart’s Asda on Thursday, saying the deal would increase prices. Sainsbury’s shares fell 5 percent and are down 22 percent over the last three months.

For Sainsbury’s fourth quarter to March 9 analysts are on average forecasting a 1.6 percent fall in like-for-like sales, which would follow 1.1 percent decline over the Christmas period.

Monthly industry data from researcher Kantar has also shown Sainsbury’s as the weakest performer of the big four grocers this year and this month it lost its status as Britain’s No. 2 supermarket group by market share to Asda.

While Sainsbury’s has struggled, market leader Tesco has gained momentum, this month reporting a 34 percent jump in full year profit.

Prohibition of the deal was a major blow to Coupe, its architect and Sainsbury’s boss since 2014.

Martin Scicluna became Sainsbury’s chairman last month and when bedded-in may decide that if the group needs a major shake-up it is best carried out by a new leader.

Much will depend on the attitude of 22 percent shareholder the Qatar Investment Authority, which has so far declined to comment, as well as Coupe’s own appetite to continue after 15 years at the group.

THE RIGHT STRATEGY?

Coupe said on Thursday he was confident Sainsbury’s was pursuing the right strategy.

That was a clear indication that Wednesday’s results statement will not include radical changes to the group’s plans, such as a big margin reset — sacrificing profit to drive sales.

However, sources connected to Sainsbury’s said Coupe would likely acknowledge that more needs to be done on prices, so the supermarket business can better compete with its big four rivals – Tesco, Asda and No. 4 Morrisons – as well as German-owned discounters Aldi and Lidl.

Coupe’s strategy is based on differentiating Sainsbury’s food offer, growing its general merchandise, clothing business and bank, while investing in convenience and online channels.

Some analysts believe major change is needed.

HSBC analyst David McCarthy reckons Sainsbury’s needs a margin reset, should allocate more space for core lines and needs to drive better store standards. He said Sainsbury’s might consider closing down space in some of its larger stores and reducing its non-food offer.

For the full 2018-19 year analysts are on average forecasting a pretax profit of 626 million pounds, up from 589 million pounds in 2017-18 – a second straight year of profit growth. A full year dividend of 10.5 pence per share is forecast versus 10.2 pence last time.

Bank and lawyer fees related to the proposed combination with Asda were 17 million pounds in the first half and have reportedly jumped to around 50 million pounds.

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada posted a budget surplus in the first 11 months of the 2018/19 fiscal year compared to a deficit the year earlier as revenues increased mostly on higher tax incomes, the finance department said on Friday.

The surplus for April-February was C$3.1 billion, compared to a deficit of C$6 billion in the same 2017/18 period. Revenues climbed by 8.5 percent, mainly due to higher tax receipts, while program expenses rose by 4.8 percent.

The surplus for February was C$4.3 billion compared with C$2.8 billion in February 2018. Revenues jumped by 12.2 percent while program expenses posted a more modest 6.9 percent gain.

Last month, the Liberals unveiled their new budget, projecting a C$14.9 billion deficit in 2018/19, with the deficit rising to C$19.8 billion in fiscal 2019/20.

President Trump said Friday he would beat Joe Biden “easily” in the 2020 presidential election, suggesting the former vice president could not have enough “energy” to hold the post—taking an apparent swipe at his age.

The president, departing the White House, was asked about Biden’s entrance into the Democratic primary field. Biden announced his presidential bid early Thursday morning, marking his third attempt at the White House.

JOE BIDEN OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES 2020 PRESIDENTIAL BID

“I think we’d beat him easily,” Trump told reporters Friday.

Trump, 72, said he feels “young” and is ready for 2020, and another term for his administration.

“I feel like a young man. I am a young, vibrant man,” Trump said. “I look at Joe, I don’t know about him.”

The president’s comments seemingly were a shot at the age of Biden, who is 76.

BIDEN ENTERS WHITE HOUSE RACE WITHOUT OBAMA’S ENDORSEMENT

“I would never say anyone’s too old,” Trump said. “I know they’re all making me look very young both in terms of age and in terms of energy.”

Biden became the 20th candidate to join the crowded Democratic primary field Thursday. But Biden is not the oldest in the pack. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is 77 and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., is 69.

Should Trump be re-elected, he would be 74 on Jan. 20, 2021—Inauguration Day. Should the presidency go to one of the elder Democrats in the field—Biden would be 78; Sanders would be 79; and Warren would be 71.

Meanwhile, in a wide-ranging interview on “Hannity” Thursday night, Trump dismissed Biden’s candidacy, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe,” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Trump also said that while the former vice president has name recognition, he won’t “be able to do the job.”
