Portland Trail Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic had surgery Tuesday to repair compound fractures in his left leg, the team announced.

Nurkic will miss the rest of this season, and there is no timetable for his recovery process.

The 7-footer fractured his left tibia and fibula at the 2:22 mark of the second overtime of a game Monday night against the Brooklyn Nets when his left foot came down on the shoe of Nets forward Jared Dudley, forcing his leg to bend awkwardly.

Nurkic tallied 32 points and 16 rebounds against Brooklyn and finished the season averaging a career-high 15.6 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 72 games, all starts.

–New Orleans Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday had surgery to repair a core muscle injury and will miss the rest of the season, the team announced.

Holiday has not played since March 6, missing the last eight games with what the team called a lower abdominal strain. The surgery was performed in Philadelphia, and Holiday will not resume basketball activities for at least six weeks.

Holiday, 28, averaged a career-high 21.2 points, 7.7 assists and 5.0 rebounds in 67 games this season, his 10th in the NBA and sixth with the Pelicans.

–The Toronto Raptors signed veteran guard Jodie Meeks.

Terms were not disclosed. According to multiple reports, the deal is for the remainder of the season.

Meeks, 31, originally signed a 10-day contract with Toronto on Feb. 20 and has appeared in two games, averaging 7.5 points and 2.0 rebounds. In 533 career games (204 starts) with seven NBA teams, Meeks has averaged 9.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists.

O’Rourke Says Immigrants Strengthen US

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke told 1,000-plus supporters near the Texas-Mexico border that immigrants make the country stronger.

Formally kicking off his campaign in his hometown of El Paso on Saturday, O'Rourke offered support for unapologetically liberal positions, including backing federal legalization of marijuana. He promised to strengthen unions nationwide, make it easier to register to vote and end U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The former congressman again vowed to work with Republicans, saying that a unified campaign will help him win his party's 2020 nomination and "defeat Donald Trump."

President Donald Trump has threatened to shutter the U.S.-Mexico border to combat a rise in the number of immigrants crossing.

Speaking mere blocks from the border, O'Rourke said, "We have learned not to fear our differences but to respect and embrace them."

O'Rourke is formally kicking off his presidential campaign with three rallies across his home state, where he came close enough to upsetting Sen. Ted Cruz to generate the national buzz now buoying his 2020 White House bid.

The Democratic ex-congressman was then set to travel to historically black Texas Southern University in Houston before an evening event in the shadow of Austin's state Capitol.

Texas is America's largest red state, but Democrats aren't writing it off in 2020. Another presidential candidate, California Sen. Kamala Harris, drew large crowds at Texas Southern last weekend.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Actress Rosario Dawson, whose film credits include “Rent” and “Men in Black II,” has confirmed reports she is dating U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Cory Booker, calling him “a wonderful human being” who she loves and admires.

Dawson, 39, went public about her relationship with the New Jersey Democrat in an on-camera interview with the celebrity news website TMZ.com as she was strolling through Reagan National Airport near Washington. The video was posted on Thursday.

Asked if there was any truth to recent media reports that she was involved with the 49-year-old bachelor politician, Dawson gamely replied, “Yes, very much so.”

“He’s a wonderful human being. It’s great to spend time together when we can,” she said.

Asked whether an engagement might be on the horizon, she said, “I have no idea. I’m just grateful to be to be with someone that I respect and love and admire so much who is so brilliant and kind and caring and loving.”

The New York Post reported in January that the actress and former Newark, New Jersey, mayor had been seeing each other since at least December 2018.

Neither Booker nor his representatives were immediately available for comment. Asked during a radio interview last month about how his bachelor status might play in the presidential race, Booker said he was “dating somebody now who’s very special.” Questioned whether she would make a “nice first lady,” he replied, “Yes, she would.”

The senator, who gained national prominence in the fight over Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation, formally launched his presidential campaign on Feb. 1, joining a crowded field of Democrats seeking their party’s nomination for the White House in 2020.

Booker initially won his Senate seat in a 2013 special election, and then was re-elected to a full six-year term in 2014. He became the second African-American to enter the 2020 presidential race, after fellow Democratic Senator Kamala Harris of California.

Dawson, a native New Yorker of Puerto Rican and Cuban ancestry, made her film debut in the 1995 indie drama “Kids.” Her movie credits include two Spike Lee dramas – “He Got Game” and “25th Hour” – “Sin City,” “Josie and the Pussycats” along with “Rent” and “Men in Black II.”

Declining U.S. market ratchets up competition for SUV sales

By Nick Carey and David Shepardson

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Falling U.S. new vehicle sales through the rest of 2019 and into 2020 will bring more intense competition in the increasingly crowded market for SUVs and a continued decline in passenger car sales, executives and economists said at this week’s auto show in New York.

“There are more and more SUVs coming to market and I continue to see that market growing,” said Fred Diaz, chief executive of Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corp. “It’s hyper competitive.”

The new SUVs at this week’s auto show included models from Toyota Motor Corp, Ford Motor Co, Subaru Corp, Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai Motor Co.

After a long bull run, U.S. auto sales are expected to fall about 3 percent to 16.8 million units. That is still a respectable number, but the decline will increase competition for market share.

Much of the decrease will be driven by falling sedan sales. As recently as 2012, passenger cars made up more than 50 percent of U.S. new vehicle sales. But that number has dropped rapidly as American consumers have sought the greater comfort and space provided by larger pickup trucks and SUVs.

While those bigger vehicles are far more profitable for automakers, increased competition could lead to higher incentives in that segment that could squeeze profit margins just like with sedans over the years, industry officials said.

Executives also cited slowly climbing auto interest rates and the rising cost of new vehicles. Honda Senior Vice President Henio Arcangeli said uncertainty about the revised U.S. tax code also had an impact on sales.

In the first quarter, cars made up just over 30 percent of new vehicle sales.

Bob Carter, head of U.S. sales at Toyota, said the industry-wide passenger car market share could still fall slightly before hitting a bottom.

But for SUVs, the market has continued to grow and may see slight growth in 2019. That has automakers pushing out new SUVs to fight for sales.

According to data from automotive consultancy LMC Automotive, by the year 2023 there will be 90 mainstream SUV and crossover models on the U.S. market, as well as 90 luxury models. Those numbers compare with 2017 levels of 65 mainstream SUV and crossover models and 53 luxury models.

Patrick Manzi, senior economist at the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), said the growing competition favors those automakers bringing fresh vehicles to the market to grab consumers’ attention.

“If you don’t have the newest, hottest product, you’re going to have to stand out somehow,” he said.

One way to stand out with an older vehicle is to offer steeper discounts to potential buyers, Manzi added.

At the show, Ford’s luxury Lincoln brand launched a new SUV, the Corsair, which chief marketing officer Joy Falotico said had turned out to be “lucky timing.”

Lincoln sales rose 11.2 percent in the first quarter, driven by SUV sales even as Ford brand sales fell 2.2 percent.

“I am confident that sales trend will continue,” Falotico said.

Despite falling sedan sales, executives at Nissan Motor Co Ltd and Toyota said they remain committed to the segment.

Toyota’s Carter noted Americans still bought 5.3 million sedans in 2018.

“So maybe it drops another 10 percent, it’s still 4.8 million units and I care desperately about that market,” he said. “We’re absolutely committed to the truck and SUV market. But we’re as equally committed to the car market.”

Papadopoulos to Newsmax TV: Campaign Spying 'Illicit Behavior'

George Papadopoulos, the former Trump campaign adviser who got caught up in the Russia investigation, would not tell Newsmax TV he thinks former FBI Director James Comey should be in jail — but he did call out what he termed "possibly illegal and definitely illicit behavior" related to the intelligence community surveilling him.

Papadopoulos was on Thursday's "Newsmax Now" and was asked by host John Bachman if he thinks Comey deserves to be prosecuted for purported abuses of intelligence-gathering practices.

"I believe in due process in this country, and I believe everybody deserves a fair trial," said Papadopoulos, who served 12 days in federal prison last fall for lying to the FBI as part of the Russia investigation. "So, I don't have a prediction or an opinion of whether Jim Comey should go to jail, because I'm not sure to the extent that he was involved in possibly illegal and definitely illicit behavior and surveillance of the Trump campaign."

Papadopoulos, who tells his story in a new book titled "Deep State Target: How I Got Caught in the Crosshairs of the Plot to Bring Down President Trump," told Bachman he is convinced something wrong was happening in the intelligence community while he was on the Trump campaign. He said the FBI was involved in setting him up in the form of meetings he held overseas with various individuals.

"I think it's time for people to hold onto their seatbelts, because I think some of the information in my book is really going to open up a lot of new doors and raise a lot of new questions instead of close this particular chapter in American history," he said.

Giants owner Mara: ‘Reluctant’ to approve Beckham trade

March 25, 2019

New York Giants co-owner John Mara admitted Sunday that he was reluctant to sign off on the decision to trade wideout Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns earlier this month.

“I will tell you that it was a reluctant approval on my part because I happen to like Odell very much,” Mara said from the NFL owners’ meetings in Phoenix, his first public comments since the trade. “I recognize the unique talent that he has. It is not easy to trade that player to another team.

“I understand also that we have a lot of holes that we need to fill. If we make the right decisions with the pick and the pick, we obviously like Jabrill Peppers a lot, which filled a need for us. I ultimately gave my 50 percent share of the approval.”

The Browns sent the Giants their first-round pick (17th overall), a third-rounder and Peppers, who was drafted 25th overall in 2017, in return for Beckham. General manager Dave Gettleman told reporters last week that it was an offer he “couldn’t refuse,” despite his previous statement that the team did not sign Beckham to an extension only to trade him.

With a player of Beckham’s prominence — and less than a year removed from making him the NFL’s highest-paid wideout — the deal had to be approved by Mara and fellow co-owner Steve Tisch.

As Mara and Tisch recounted at a joint news conference Sunday, Gettleman called both men to relay news of the offer, and both had to think about it before ultimately deciding to go through with a deal.

“This was not a decision that was made quickly, without a lot of thought and a lot of conversation discussing with both Dave and [head coach Pat Shurmur] and the impact, what it would mean to the club,” Tisch said. “It is a tough decision. One of the toughest we have had to make in a long time. Many, many years.”

“It was not easy, that’s why it took this long,” Mara added. “It took a long time to come to grips with the fact that we were moving him to another team. I just didn’t think that was going to happen all winter. I think what we are getting in return will make us better if we make the right decisions.”

Mara also acknowledged that Beckham’s personality and tendency to make headlines for things not directly related to football played a small part in the decision.

“I had conversations with him about it, but it was never to the point where we said to Dave that he had to get rid of him,” Mara said. “It never reached that point. Was it a factor in the final decision? Yes, it is a factor. The thing about him, though, is that it never — he is a good guy. He did good things with us.”

Both owners wished Beckham well in Cleveland, but Mara admitted it will be difficult watching the former Giants first-round pick in another uniform.

“It is not going to be easy, I am not going to lie to you,” Mara said. “It won’t be easy. He is a great player and I hope he has a great career with the Browns. It makes it a little bit easier that he is not in our conference.”

COLOMBO (Reuters) – Sri Lanka’s former wartime defense chief, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, said on Friday he would run for president in elections this year and would stop the spread of Islamist extremism by rebuilding the intelligence service and surveilling citizens.

Gotabaya, as he is popularly known, is the younger brother of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the two led the country to a crushing defeat of separatist Tamil rebels a decade ago after a 26-year civil war.

More than 250 people were killed in bomb attacks on hotels and churches on Easter Sunday that the government has blamed on Islamist militants and that Islamic State has claimed responsibility for.

Gotabaya said the attacks could have been prevented if the island’s current government had not dismantled the intelligence network and extensive surveillance capabilities that he built up during the war and later on.

“Because the government was not prepared, that’s why you see a panic situation,” he said in an interview with Reuters.

Gotabaya said he would be a candidate “100 percent”, firming up months of speculation that he plans to run in the elections, which are due by December.

He was critical of the government’s response to the bombings. Since the attacks, the government has struggled to provide clear information about how they were staged, who was behind them and how serious the threat is from Islamic State to the country.

“Various people are blaming various people, not giving exactly the details as to what happened, even people expect the names, what organization did this, and how they came up to this level, that explanation was not given,” he said.

On Friday, President Maithripala Sirisena said the government led by premier Ranil Wickremesinghe should take responsibility for the attacks and that prior information warning of attacks was not shared with him.

Wickremesinghe said earlier he was not advised about warnings that came from India’s spy service either, presenting a picture of a government still in disarray since the two leaders fell out last October.

Gotabaya is facing lawsuits in the United States, where he is a dual citizen, over his role in the war and afterwards.

The South Africa-based International Truth and Justice Project, in partnership with U.S. law firm Hausfeld, filed a civil case in California this month against Gotabaya on behalf of a Tamil torture survivor.

In a separate case, Ahimsa Wickrematunga, the daughter of murdered investigative editor Lasantha Wickrematunga, filed a complaint for damages in the same U.S. District Court in California for allegedly instigating and authorizing the extrajudicial killing of her father.

Gotabaya said the cases were baseless and only a “little distraction” as he prepared for the election campaign. He said he had asked U.S. authorities to renounce his citizenship and that process was nearly done, clearing the way for his candidature.

‘DISMANTLE THE NETWORKS’

He said that if he won, his immediate focus would to be tackle the threat from radical Islam and to rebuild the security set-up.

“It’s a serious problem, you have to go deep into the groups, dismantle the networks,” he said, adding he would give the military a mandate to collect intelligence from the ground and to mount surveillance of groups turning to extremism.

Gotabaya said that a military intelligence cell he had set up in 2011 of 5,000 people, some of them with Arabic language skills and that was tracking the bent towards extremist ideology some of the Islamist groups were taking in eastern Sri Lanka was disbanded by the current government.

“They did not give priority to national security, there was a mix-up. They were talking about ethnic reconciliation, then they were talking about human rights issues, they were talking about individual freedoms,” he said.

President Sirisena’s government sought to forge reconciliation with minority Tamils and close the wounds of the war and launched investigations into allegations of rights abuse and torture against military officers.

Officials said many of these secret intelligence cells were disbanded because they faced allegations of abuse, including torture and extra judicial killings.

Muslims make up nearly 10 percent of Sri Lanka’s population of 22 million, which is predominantly Buddhist.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Federal Reserve may lower the interest it pays on excess reserves banks leave with it by 5 basis points at its April 30-May 1 policy meeting in a bid to prevent the federal funds rate from drifting higher, Morgan Stanley analysts said on Friday.

This would mark the third such “technical” adjustment on the interest on excess reserves (IOER) following cuts last June and December.

In response to the news that the U.S. economy rose 3.2 percent in the first quarter of 2019, White House National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow said that this “prosperity cycle” will continue if President Trump‘s policies stay in place.

Calling the advance in gross domestic product a “blow-out number,” Kudlow told “America’s Newsroom” Friday that it serves as concrete proof Trump’s measures to grow the economy have been successful.

“I’ll just say, Trump’s policies to rebuild the economy, lower taxes, regulations, opening energy, trade reform. Look, this stuff is working,” he said.

“It tells me, among other things, that the prosperity cycle we have entered into is continuing, it is strong. It has legs and momentum and frankly it is going to go on for quite some time,” he continued. “This is the new Trump economy. Some people don’t like that or they don’t agree with that. I respect the differences but I’ll tell you it’s working.”

STUART VARNEY: THANKS TO TRUMP, AMERICANS ARE FEELING BETTER ABOUT THEIR FINANCES

39 MILLION ADULTS CANNOT AFFORD A SUMMER VACATION

Kudlow added that Trump has “ended the war” on business and success, and is rallying for the small business owners of America.

“The president is rebuilding incentives, he is rebuilding confidence, he the rebuilding optimism,” he said. “He is basically saying you should keep more of what you earn. He is basically saying to small businesses we’ll cut the paperwork back and make it easier for you to start a business and prosper.”

Kudlow said the Trump administration is also working with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders to implement bipartisan deals to ensure the continuation of the GDP’s success.

“If the policies and the principles remain in place — and I believe they will — then I believe this new prosperity expansion cycle is going to go on for a whole bunch of more years,” he said.

Tennis - Australian Open - Women's Singles Final

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – World number one Naomi Osaka came from behind in the final set to beat Croatian Donna Vekic 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) on Friday and move into the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix semi-finals.

Osaka comfortably won the opening set but was tested by the Croatian, who pushed her to the limit in the second and third. The Japanese made 45 unforced errors as she struggles to get to grips with swapping hard courts for clay.

Osaka was visibly frustrated and trailed 5-1 in the final set but she refused to give up and found her rhythm to break Vekic twice and prevent her from serving for the match.

In the tiebreaker, a confident Osaka upped her baseline game and had two early mini breaks before wrapping up the match in two hours and 18 minutes. An infuriated Vekic even smashed her racket after losing the match.

“I told myself I didn’t want to have any regrets here,” Osaka said. “I was stressed out when I went down 1-5… but this (comeback) was pretty good because I don’t play really well on clay.”

Earlier, world number three Petra Kvitova came back from a set down to beat Anastasija Sevastova 2-6 6-2 6-3 and move into the tournament’s semi-finals for the third time in her career.

Sevastova had a dream start, breaking Kvitova twice to take a 3-0 lead as the Czech struggled with her first serve. Kvitova also made a slew of unforced errors, with many of her returns going long.

Sevastova used the full width of the court to get the better of Kvitova, who played on the back foot for much of the first set as the Latvian gave her little time to catch her breath.

However, Kvitova recovered in the second set and she broke Sevastova’s serve when she was 3-2 up, winning 10 straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Sevastova looked shaken and was broken again to give Kvitova the second set.

Kvitova took command in the final set and broke a visibly upset Sevastova to take a 3-1 lead before easing into the semis.

“In the first set I missed almost everything. I was pretty slow and she just couldn’t miss,” Kvitova said. “In the second set it was very important for me to stay on my serve and the chance to break her came.”

Kiki Bertens plays Angelique Kerber later on Friday and Victoria Azarenka faces Anett Kontaveit in the last quarter-final.

President Donald Trump says he feels “young” and “vibrant” at age 72 and thinks he can beat 76-year-old Joe Biden “easily.”

A reporter asked Trump at the White House on Friday how old is too old to be president of the United States.

Trump said: “I just feel like a young man. I’m so young. I can’t believe it. … I’m a young vibrant man.”

Then he smiled and said he’s not sure about Democratic presidential contender Biden, the second-oldest contender in the race behind Bernie Sanders.

Trump said: “I look at Joe. I don’t know about him.”

Biden, in an interview on ABC’s “The View,” joked in response that if Trump “looks young and vibrant compared to me, I should probably go home.”
