Venezuelan forces search homes of 2 opposition figures

Venezuelan security forces have searched the homes of two key supporters of opposition leader Juan Guaido, who is escalating a campaign to oust President Nicolas Maduro.

Venezuelan intelligence agents early Thursday entered the homes of opposition lawmaker Sergio Vergara and of Roberto Marrero, a lawyer who heads Guaido's office. Both men accompanied Guaido on a recent Latin American tour to build international support for his efforts to remove Maduro.

Guaido confirmed the operation against his aides in a Twitter post. Vergara also tweeted about security forces entering his home, saying they were violating his parliamentary immunity.

Guaido says he is the rightful leader of Venezuela and that Maduro's re-election last year was illegitimate. Maduro says Guaido is a collaborator in a U.S. plot to overthrow his government.

Merkel calls for end to military push on Tripoli

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is urging Field Marshal Khalifa Hifter to end his self-styled Libyan National Army's push on Tripoli, saying there can be no military solution to the country's problems.

Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said Thursday that Merkel made the comments in a telephone call to Fayez Sarraj, the leader of the U.N.-backed transitional government in Tripoli.

The oil-rich North African country is now governed by rival administrations — a U.N.-backed government in Tripoli and the west and Hifter and his supporters in the east

Seibert says "the chancellor condemned the advance of General Hifter's troops on Tripoli. The German government urgently demands that General Hifter and his supporters immediately end all military operations."

Merkel also called for all parties involved to return to the negotiation table.

Mexico deports 204 migrants back to Honduras

Mexican immigration officials have sent 204 migrants back to Honduras.

The National Migration Institute said Sunday that the migrants' stay in Mexico was "irregular" and that they were flown from the southeastern Mexican state of Veracruz to San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

The institute said most of the migrants were families traveling with underage children.

This year, the Mexican government abruptly stopped issuing humanitarian visas at the border with Guatemala. The visas had given migrants legal status while they made their way to the U.S. border.

In response, some have forced their way into Mexico.

Mexican officials have come under pressure from the Trump administration to help stem the flow of migrants trying to reach the U.S.

CNN’S S.E. Cupp on Trump: ‘Beat Him at the Ballot Box’

A conservative host on CNN cannot reach liberal viewers without trumpeting for the ouster of President Donald Trump, but S.E. Cupp does it with a call to "beat him at the ballot box" – the way the U.S. Democracy intended – and not moving to impeach him.

"This president is unfit to lead," she said on CNN's "S.E. Cupp Unfiltered." "He has shown time and time again his utter disdain for democratic process, separation of powers, the law. He's got to go. But not by impeachment."

Cupp was pointing to the political attacks on President Trump from the Mueller report, which concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove a crime but passed the buck to Congress to decide the president's fate on potential impeachment proceedings.

"The reality is without bipartisan support for such a drastic and disruptive maneuver it will only rip us apart even further and that benefits Trump, not America," she said of impeachment. "Beat him at the ballot box.

"Beat him with ideas and policies. Beat him with an agenda that doesn't divide us further, that isn't just designed to piss off half the country or punish people who voted for him."

Cupp said toppling the president using "respect, hope, and optimism" should not be hard.

There has not been much in the way of respect, hope, or optimism for President Trump from his political opposition, particularly with an estimated $35 million Mueller report which features – for those critics – the most memorable conclusion being not "no collusion, no obstruction" but this line: "While this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him."

Ostensibly, for President Trump's opposition: politically guilty because potentially not proven innocent criminally.

(Reuters) – Asian wheat millers are snapping up cargoes of the grain from Argentina to arrive in the first-half of the year, typically peak-export season for traditional supplier Australia where a second year of drought is hitting production.

Large volumes of exports to Asia from Argentina could further chip away at Australia’s dominance of the region’s wheat supply, which has already been eroded by growing Black Sea shipments over the past few years.

Indonesia, the world’s second-largest wheat importer, has booked close to 1 million tonnes of Argentinian wheat for arrival between February and April, while Malaysia and Vietnam have also contracted shipments, according to estimates from two Singapore-based traders who were involved in some of the deals.

“It is for the first time we are seeing such large volumes of wheat coming from Argentina,” said one of the traders, who did not want to be identified as he was not authorized to speak to media.

“This is largely because Australia is absent from the market.”

Argentinian wheat with 12-pct protein has been traded in Asia at around $255-$265 a tonne, including cost and freight (C&F). That compares with similar quality Australian grain quoted around $300 a tonne C&F to Asia.

Asia is the world’s biggest wheat consumer and importer.

Australia’s wheat production fell to an 11-year low during the 2018/19 season, the country’s chief commodity forecaster said this week, after an east coast drought wilted crops in the world’s No. 4 exporter.

Output totaled 17.3 million tonnes, down from 21.24 million tonnes a year earlier, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences said in its final tally for the recently harvested crop.

Chicago wheat prices rose on Wednesday after falling for the last three sessions to their lowest since late October on concerns over poor demand for U.S. supplies.

“We expect wheat from Argentina to dominate in Asia until April or May, after which U.S. wheat will be the key origin supplying wheat,” said the second trader.

Argentina is expected to produce 19.20 million tonnes of wheat in the year to June 2019, up from 18.50 million tonnes the year before year and sharply higher than 11.30 million tonnes in 2015/16, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data.

Venezuelan intel agents arrest top opposition aide after allegedly planting firearms, grenade in night raid

Venezuelan intelligence agents have “kidnapped” a top aide to interim leader Juan Guaidó following a middle-of-the-night raid at gunpoint, where agents allegedly planted firearms and a grenade to justify the arrest.

The detention of Guaido’s chief of staff, Roberto Marrero, came shortly after the Venezuelan authorities entered and searched the homes of Marrero and opposition lawmaker Sergio Vergara on Thursday. Vergara said he was woken up by heavy banging at his door and agents pointing weapons at him.

Both officials accompanied the interim leader on a recent Latin American tour to galvanize opposition to the socialist Nicolas Maduro regime and shore up support for Guaido as the legitimate leader of the country.

CITIGROUP TO SELL MORE THAN $1B IN VENEZUELAN GOLD IN BLOW TO MADURO REGIME, REPORTS SAY

Guaido accused the regime of kidnapping and urged it to release his aide, whose location remains unknown, the BBC reported.

The opposition leader said Venezuelan intelligence agents planted “two rifles and a grenade” at his aide’s home during the raid. “We don’t know where he is. He should be freed immediately,” Guaido tweeted.

The Trump administration, meanwhile, condemned the raids and threatened Maduro’s regime with consequences.

“The United States condemns raids by Maduro’s security services and detention of Roberto Marrero, Chief of Staff to Interim President @jguaido,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wrote in a tweet. “We call for his immediate release. We will hold accountable those involved.”

VENEZUELA IN CHAOS AFTER MASSIVE POWER OUTAGE, MADURO'S REGIME BLAMES MARCO RUBIO

Vergara was reportedly also briefly detained following the raids. According to the BBC, he said over 40 heavily armed officers from the intelligence agency raided the properties.

Most Western governments, including the U.S., are backing Guaidó and recognize his legitimacy. Venezuelan prosecutors say Guaidó is being investigated for alleged links to violence as well as for any connection to the nation’s worst power outages that plunged the country into darkness for extensive time periods.

Venezuelan government officials directly blamed the U.S. -- including Florida Senator Marco Rubio -- for the outages. More reliable sources peg the blackouts as being caused due to crumbling infrastructure.

LONDON (Reuters) – Citigroup is in talks to buy the tower housing its European headquarters in London’s Canary Wharf district, which is on the market with a price tag of around 1.2 billion pounds ($1.55 billion), a source familiar with the matter said.

The tower at 25 Canada Square, which already houses many of the bank’s 6,000 London-based staff, was put up for sale in October by AGC Equity Partners. The source said a deal had yet to be agreed, with Citi unlikely to offer the full asking price.

Should Citi agree the purchase, with a decision likely in the next couple of months, the bank would look to move staff currently based in a second building in the area, 33 Canada Square, to the larger tower, the source said.

News of the talks was earlier reported by the Financial Times.

Such a move would be in line with Citi’s strategy of buying buildings in locations where it has and intends to retain a presence, and follows a deal in 2016 to buy the group’s New York office, the source said.

The deal would be a boost for London’s commercial property market ahead of Brexit. Around 60 percent of Citi’s Europe-based staff already work outside of Britain, which has meant very few – around 60 – were expected to be moved as part of preparations for Britain’s exit from the European Union, the source said.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
