US military vet recounts arrests in Haiti to AP

An American security contractor at the center of a mysterious case roiling Haitian politics says that he and a group of fellow veterans were sent to Haiti on a mission to protect a businessman signing a more than $50 million contract at the country's central bank.

Chris Osman tells The Associated Press that he and six fellow contractors were arrested by Haitian police during what was supposed to be a simple reconnaissance of the route their client would take to the bank the following day.

The 44-year-old retired Navy SEAL says the operations "went bad for us." It's the first on-the-record interview by any of the arrested men.

The contractors' unexplained release and the still-murky nature of their mission have helped fuel political chaos in Haiti.

VIDEO: Man punches woman who tried to stop him harassing other women on NYC subway

A man harassing women at a New York City subway brutally punched a 52-year-old woman in the face, breaking her nose, after she told him to stop, a shocking video shows.

Authorities released surveillance footage showing a man in a white long-sleeve shirt slugging a woman coming out of the Church Avenue subway station in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn at about 7:15 p.m. on March 21.

He appears to yell at the woman, and when she tries to go around him, the man socks her in the face, breaking her nose.

DEPORTED MS-13 MEMBER, A CONVICTED KILLER IN THE US, CAUGHT BACK ON NEW YORK'S LONG ISLAND

Police said that moments earlier, the woman had told him to stop harassing other women at the subway station.

“(He was using) foul-mouthed language to insult them and scream at them,” the woman, who asked not to be identified, told ABC7.

She said the man became enraged when she called it him out on his language and then followed her when she got off the train.

He hurled insults at her as she walked out of the station, and then, she says, the situation turned violent.

"He turned around, and just said 'now I can hit you,' and that was the moment where I already felt him hitting me," the victim said, adding that it was like an “out of body experience.”

"I never felt like a victim for some reason. I just felt this was so bizarre to me -- I did not expect it," she added.

The woman refused medical attention at the scene.

Polish leader: LGBT rights an import that threatens nation

The chairman of Poland's conservative ruling party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has called the LGBT rights movement a foreign import that threatens the Polish nation.

Kaczynski, Poland's most important politician, also said "everyone must accept Christianity" and that questioning the powerful Roman Catholic in Poland is unpatriotic.

The positions that Kaczynski took Wednesday in a lecture on patriotism in the central city of Wroclawek come ahead of elections next month to the European Parliament and a general election in Poland in the fall.

His Law and Justice party has made opposition to LGBT rights a campaign issue, which Kaczynski called "a direct attack on family and children."

Calling the LGBT rights movement "imported," he said it "actually threatens our identity, our nation, its continuation and therefore the Polish state."

Scottish leader to give update on independence plans

Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon is due to outline her plans for a new referendum on independence from the U.K.

The first minister is scheduled to update the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh Wednesday on "Brexit and Scotland's future." Her office did not say whether Sturgeon will set a date for a new vote.

Scots voted against independence by 55% to 45% in a 2014 referendum billed as a once-in-generation poll.

In 2016, the U.K. as a whole voted to leave the European Union, but Scotland voted strongly to remain.

Sturgeon, who leads the pro-independence Scottish National Party, argues that Brexit changes everything because Scotland should not be taken out of the EU against its will.

A referendum would need approval from the British government, which says the time is not right.

Suspect in NJ nanny’s murder is illegal immigrant from Honduras, authorities say

A New Jersey man who was arrested Sunday in the death of a woman whose body was found in a city park's lake last week is an illegal immigrant from Honduras, authorities confirmed.

Jorge Rios, 33, was taken into custody in connection with the death of 45-year-old Carolina Cano, a nanny originally from Peru, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. Her body was found March 24 in a lake in Lincoln Park in Jersey City.

Cano’s roommate told New York's WNBC-TV that Cano had gone for a jog around 5:30 a.m. but never returned. Her body was found around 7:30 a.m. The county Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Cano had been raped, strangled and submerged in the lake.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, citing video evidence, told reporters Monday that Rios and Canos did not know each other and that the attack appeared to have been random.

Chloe Jackson scored the go-ahead basket with 40 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter as top-seeded Baylor advanced to the NCAA Women’s Tournament championship game with a 72-67 victory over second-seeded Oregon on Friday night in Tampa, Fla.

Kalani Brown scored 22 points, and Lauren Cox had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Bears (36-1), who won their 28th straight game and will attempt to capture their first title since the Brittney Griner-led undefeated team in 2012.

Baylor, which shot 54.4 percent from the field, will face defending champion Notre Dame after the Irish defeated second-seeded Connecticut 81-76 in the other semifinal Friday night.

Pac-12 Player of the Year Sabrina Ionescu scored 18 points, and Satou Sabally added 16 for the Ducks (33-5), who remained in the contest on the strength of 12 3-pointers despite shooting 36.8 percent from the field overall.

Sabally sank a 3-pointer to even the game at 67 with 1:40 to play, marking the 12th tie of the contest. It didn’t last long, as Jackson benefited from a high screen to breeze past Erin Boley for the go-ahead basket with 40 seconds to play.

Sabally was unable to answer at the other end of the court, as her jumper failed to go down. Cox made a pair of free throws to push Baylor’s lead to 71-67 with 18 seconds left. Ionescu and Sabally each missed 3-point attempts in the closing seconds.

Baylor worked the interior as DiDi Richards made a layup and sank a free throw to push the lead to four early in the fourth quarter, but she committed her fourth foul on the next possession.

Oti Gildon cleaned up Boley’s 3-point misfire for an easy putback to halve the deficit, and teams traded baskets before Oregon went on a 7-0 run.

Ruthy Hebard made a layup, Boley connected on a jumper and Maite Cazorla sank a 3-pointer to give the Ducks a 64-61 lead with 6:13 remaining in the fourth quarter. Cox and Brown answered by each sinking a jumper to regain Baylor’s advantage with 3:50 left.

Boley drained a 3-pointer to give Oregon a 55-52 lead with 1:10 remaining in the third quarter before Brown answered with a jumper on the next possession. Boley misfired on another 3-point attempt, and Cox recorded an offensive rebound and quick putback to give Baylor a 56-55 advantage at the end of the quarter.

The Ducks led 34-33 at halftime after a four-point play by Ionescu with eight seconds remaining.

Exit poll shows comedian leading Ukraine presidential election: ‘The first step toward a great victory’

A comedian with no political experience received the most votes in the first round of Ukraine's presidential election, an exit poll projected Sunday night, with incumbent President Petro Poroshenko projected to place a distant second.

"This is only the first step toward a great victory," Volodymyr Zelenskiy, 41, told reporters in Kiev after the polls closed.

Zelenskiy, the star of a TV sitcom about a teacher who became president after a video of him denouncing corruption went viral, led the field of 39 candidates with 30.4 percent of the vote, according to an exit poll by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology and the Razumkov public opinion organization. Poroshenko tallied with 17.8 percent support while former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko placed third 14.2 percent, it said.

Officials results will be expected Monday morning, but if the exit poll result holds, Zelenskiy and Poroshenko will square off in a runoff election April 21.

In a case of life imitating art, Zelenskiy made corruption a focus of his candidacy. He proposed a lifetime ban on holding public office for anyone convicted of graft. He also called for direct negotiations with Russia on ending the fighting in eastern Ukraine.

"A new life, a normal life is starting," Zelenskiy said after he cast his ballot in Kiev. "A life without corruption, without bribes."

The vote was shadowed by allegations of widespread vote buying. Police said they had received more than 1,600 complaints of violations on voting day alone in addition to hundreds of earlier voting fraud claims, including bribery attempts and removing ballots from polling places. Ukraine's interior minister said his department was "showered" with hundreds of claims that supporters of Poroshenko and Tymoshenko had offered money in exchange for votes.

Zelenskiy's lack of experience helped his popularity with voters amid broad disillusionment with the country's political elite.

"Zelenskiy has shown us on the screen what a real president should be like," said voter Tatiana Zinchenko, 30. "He showed what the state leader should aspire for — fight corruption by deeds, not words, help the poor, control the oligarchs."

"(We have) no trust in old politicians. They were at the helm and the situation in the country has only gotten worse — corruption runs amok and the war is continuing," said businessman Valery Ostrozhsky, 66, another Zelenskiy voter.

The 53-year-old Poroshenko, a onetime confectionary tycoon, pushed successfully for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to be recognized as self-standing rather than a branch of the Russian church.

However, he saw approval of his governing sink amid Ukraine's economic woes and a sharp plunge in living standards. Poroshenko campaigned on promises to defeat the rebels in the east and to wrest back control of Crimea, which Russia took over in 2014 in a move that has drawn sanctions against Russia from the U.S. and the European Union.

A military embezzlement scheme that allegedly involved top Poroshenko associates, as well as a factory controlled by the president, dogged Poroshenko ahead of the election. Ultra-right activists shadowed him throughout the campaign, demanding the jailing of the president's associates accused in the scheme.

On Sunday night, Poroshenko called his second-place finish sobering, telling a news conference: "I don't feel any kind of euphoria. I critically and soberly understand the signal that society gave today to the acting authorities."

Zelenskiy and Tymoshenko both used the alleged embezzlement to take hits at Poroshenko, who shot back at his rivals. He described them as puppets of a self-exiled billionaire businessman Igor Kolomoyskyi, charges that Zelenskiy and Tymoshenko denied.

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.

Hundreds of Cuban migrants are reported to be on the run Friday in Mexico after a crowd of more than 1,000 burst out of a troubled immigration detention center on its southern border.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said the mass escape Thursday in Tapachula – which the Associated Press called the largest in recent memory — involved around 1,300 Cuban migrants, although 700 of them have since returned voluntarily.

The migrants reportedly streamed out of the compound without any resistance, as the institute said its agents weren’t armed and “there was no confrontation.”

Federal police with riot shields later rushed in to control the situation, as a crowd of angry Cubans whose relatives were being held at the facility gathered outside. The Cubans claimed their relatives reported overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at the facility.

BORDER PATROL UNION CHIEF BLASTS CONGRESS OVER MIGRANT CARAVANS: ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT’?

“My wife and child have been in there for 27 days in bad conditions,” said Usmoni Velazquez Vallejo, as he waited outside for news. “There is overcrowding, insufficient food and there isn’t even medicine for them.”

Another Cuban detainee told the AFP: “We have many there… we are very tight, we sleep on the floor.”

It’s the third time since October that migrants at the facility staged an uprising, according to the news agency.

The center’s holding capacity is officially listed at less than 1,000 people, but the escape of 1,300 meant it was probably at least at double its capacity, since not everyone being held there escaped. Residents in the area said that sometimes the facility has held as many as 3,000 people, and a Mexican newspaper cited by Reuters said Haitians and Central Americans also are among the large group who still have not been tracked down.

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

The Washington Post’s media critic went into meltdown after White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders held a mock press briefing for the children of White House journalists and employees on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

Erik Wemple, the newspaper’s chief media critic, slammed Sanders and the White House for organizing a fun day on Thursday for junior would-be journalists, while not holding an actual press conference for the record number of days.

WHITE HOUSE STAFF TO SKIP CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER AFTER LAST YEAR’S CONTROVERSY

Wemple wrote that Sanders gave to children an important lesson of “the centrality of nonaccountability mechanisms in the affairs of state” after she announced that the mock press briefing was “off the record.”

“When the children head home tonight, perhaps they can pull up archival footage to see how their questions stack up against ye olde press briefings,” he added.

“Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

“Tuesday, after all, marked a record for number of days without a White House press briefing. Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

While some correspondents praised the White House for doing “a lot of work to welcome the children and provide “them an excellent experience,” other journalists echoed Wemple’s criticism and pointed out that Sanders hasn’t held a press briefing in over 40 days.

“Kids of WH Press Corps members are getting ready for a briefing with  @PressSec. Their parents have not had one in 45 days,” tweeted CBS News’ White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang.

REPORTER SHOUTS AT SARAH SANDERS AFTER BRIEFING: ‘DO YOUR JOB, SARAH!’

“The irony of it is that they’re pretending that the White House press briefing is a thing, and they’re pretending that this is how the White House operates, but this is not at all how the White House operates … It’s a relic of an earlier time,” another correspondent quoted by the Post said.

The Post struck a different tune in a column earlier this year, which declared that despite the administration’s criticism of the media, President Trump was “extremely accessible.”

Wemple quoted Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project, who said that Trump held 338 “short question-and-answer” sessions over his time in office, significantly more than 75 such sessions by former President Barack Obama during his first full two years in office.
