Jim Jordan: Mueller Report Not 'Bombshell' Dems Expected

House Democrats don’t think special counsel Robert Mueller’s final report is the “bombshell they anticipated” — and have pivoted to conducting their own probes of President Donald Trump, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said Sunday.

In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Jordan said “we haven’t seen any” indication of the “central charge of the special counsel … to see if this was conspiracy, coordination, or collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia to impact the election.”

“They don't think this Mueller report is going to be the bombshell they anticipated,” he said of House Democrats. “Now they're launching other charges, other investigations.”

He also chided Democrats for clamoring for Mueller to head the nearly two year investigation.

“Remember, this is Bob Mueller — the guy the Democrats, the Republicans, everyone in town said, ‘this is the guy we need to pick. He can almost walk on water. He's right next to Jesus. This is the guy,’” he said.

“But all indications are that there is not going to be any finding of any collusion whatsoever,” he said.

With eight games remaining in the season, the Los Angeles Lakers announced that LeBron James will sit out Wednesday night’s contest at Utah against the Jazz.

James, who has been on a minutes restriction ever since the Lakers fell out of playoff contention, played 35 minutes against the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, three minutes over his suggested playing time. He then played 34 minutes Tuesday against the Washington Wizards.

Those most recent games for James came after he tweaked his right knee in the closing minutes of Friday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets.

James has led the Lakers in assists in each of the past three games, collecting 14 in Tuesday’s 124-106 victory over the Wizards. He has scored 27.4 points per game in his first season in Los Angeles with 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists.

At 33-41, the Lakers are next to last in the Pacific Division, ahead of only the Phoenix Suns. Los Angeles was officially eliminated from playoff contention after Friday’s defeat to the Nets.

Teacher fired over topless photo, threatens $3M federal lawsuit, alleges gender discrimination: report

A middle school teacher in one of New York City's Long Island suburbs claims she was fired last week for an old topless selfie and is now threatening to sue her former school district for gender discrimination.

Lauren Miranda, 25, a former math teacher at Bellport Middle School, took a topless selfie in 2016 and sent it to her then-boyfriend, who also works at the school, Miranda’s attorney, John Ray, said during a news conference Monday. In January, a student somehow obtained the selfie, and the image circulated through the school, Ray said.

Miranda said she had no idea how the student obtained the photo. She was subsequently placed on paid administrative leave and then fired. She said she plans to file a $3 million federal lawsuit alleging gender discrimination unless she’s reinstated, WPIX-TV reported.

"I loved my job, I never woke up in the morning and didn't want to go. I loved my students, my faculty. I really thought this is where I was going to spend the next thirty years of my life," she said.

WOUNDED TEACHER EXPECTED SHOTS AT SCHOOL, NOT ON DRIVE HOME

According to court documents provided by Ray’s law firm, the district had said Miranda was not a good role model because of the photo.

“My career has been ruined, my reputation has been tarnished, I have been stigmatized,” Miranda said. “Everything I have worked so hard for since I was 18 years old has been stolen from me because of one innocuous selfie.”

Ray accused the school district of sexism, arguing that a male teacher would not have been fired had the same thing happened to him.

“Anytime a man has ever exposed his chest, no one has ever commented or had any problem with it whatsoever. But when a woman displays her chest, as happened here, she gets fired from her job,” he said.

The school district has not commented on the litigation.

Swedish teen climate activist joins London protest as arrests top 830

April 21, 2019

LONDON (Reuters) – Swedish teenage environmental activist Greta Thunberg on Sunday urged hundreds of climate-change protesters in London to never give up their campaign to save the planet as police arrests over disruptions to the city’s landmarks rose above 830.

Climate group Extinction Rebellion has targeted sites such as Oxford Circus and Waterloo Bridge in a campaign of non-violent civil disobedience with the aim of stopping what it calls a global climate crisis.

Police said the number of arrests in connection with the protests rose to 831 on Sunday, and 40 people had been charged with offences such as obstructing a highway and obstructing the police.

Thunberg, a 16-year-old student, spoke to hundreds of activists at Marble Arch, one of a number of London landmarks that have been brought to a standstill over seven days of direct action. Police were allowing the protest to continue at the site.

“We are the ones making a difference – we the people in Extinction Rebellion and the children’s School Strike for the Climate – we are the ones making a difference,” she told cheering crowds.

“And we will never stop fighting, we will never stop fighting for this planet, for ourselves, our futures and for the futures of our children and grandchildren.”

Thunberg inspired a movement of children against global warming when she took a stand in front of Stockholm’s Parliament House last August with her “school strike for climate” sign.

Thousands of students around the world have since copied her, and the schoolgirl took her campaign to European leaders in Strasbourg on Tuesday and to the Vatican, where she met Pope Francis, on Wednesday. [nL5N21Y566] [nL5N21Z31L]

London police said they had moved protesters from roads around Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus and Parliament Square, and they were working to re-open Waterloo Bridge.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said on Saturday that the protests had caused “miserable disruption”. She said there were now 1,500 police officers, up from 1,000 previously, working to clear the roads. [nL5N2220GH]

Murder scene of Putin's foe in London was 'trashy set up of a suicide', devastated daughter says

The murder scene of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s enemy was a “trashy set up of a suicide,” his daughter said on the one-year anniversary of the ordeal.

Nikolai Glushkov, a 68-year-old London-based Russian businessman, was murdered last year in his London home after an autopsy revealed that he died from compression to the neck.

This prompted British authorities to launch a murder investigation, with detectives saying that he may have been murdered because of “the associations Mr. Glushkov is believed to have had.”

'NOTHING CRIMINAL' ABOUT 2 SUSPECTS IN NOVICHOK POISONING, PUTIN SAYS

He was closely associated with Boris Berezovsky, a Russian oligarch and strong Kremlin critic who died under disputed circumstances in 2013, and a friend of assassinated Alexander Litvinenko.

Speaking out about the ordeal for the first time since her father's death, Natalia Glushkova is now providing more details about the murder that so far netted no identified suspects.

She told the Guardian in a series of interviews that the murder scene looked like a targeted hit, with no sign of a break-in and no noise from her father’s ridgeback dog.

“I could see some traces of physical harm done to him. The picture was so trashy,” She said. “It looked like a cheap set-up of a suicide. My father was a kind soul, always positive, and a very refined person. I had never seen any sort of depression in him.”

Glushkov’s death last year also came just a week after the poisoning of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury by agents of Russian military intelligence.

EX-RUSSIAN SPY SERGEI SKRIPAL'S POISONING: WHAT TO KNOW

Glushkova said her father’s death may have been linked to the poison attack. “Skripal’s case was very loud. If you want something to go unnoticed you make a firework,” she told the newspaper.

She said it’s “literally devastating” that a year after the murder, the authorities haven’t produced a single suspect and told others to “care and spend time with the ones they love, as much as they can, and never think there is a tomorrow for somebody they care about.”

Commander Clarke Jarrett, head of the Met's counter-terrorism command, which is investigating the murder, told the Telegraph that inquiries have been made concerning the murder and said that nearly 2,000 witnesses were contacted in addition to watching over 2,200 hours of CCTV footage.

“Mr Glushkov was murdered a year ago and we have made and continue to make extensive inquiries to establish the motive and identify anyone who may have been involved,” he said.

Asia shares, bonds buoyed as Fed seen dovish

SYDNEY (Reuters) – Asian share markets crept ahead on Monday while bonds were in demand globally on speculation the U.S. Federal Reserve will sound decidedly dovish at its policy meeting this week.

Japan’s Nikkei led the way with a rise of 0.7 percent, and MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan edged up 0.1 percent.

E-Mini futures for the S&P 500 were just a fraction lower. The S&P 500 boasted its best weekly gain since the end of November last week, while the Nasdaq had its best week so far this year.

There is much talk Fed policymakers will lower their interest rate forecasts, or “dot plots”, to show little or no further tightening this year.

Also expected is more detail on a plan to stop culling the Fed’s holdings of nearly $3.8 trillion in bonds. The two-day meeting ends with a news conference on Wednesday.

As a result, yields on three and five-year Treasuries are dead in line with the effective Fed funds rate, while futures imply a better-than-even chance of a rate cut by year end.

“Long-term bond yields remain noticeably lower across a wide range of countries,” said Alan Oster, group chief economist at National Australia Bank.

“Markets are pricing in little or no chance of a rate hike by the major central banks this year, outside of the Bank of England. The Fed is indicating that it will be patient and we don’t expect any rate hikes this year.”

Data on Friday showed U.S. manufacturing output fell for a second straight month in February and factory activity in New York state hit nearly a two-year low this month, offering further evidence of a sharp slowdown in economic growth early in the first quarter.

A marked decline in Treasury yields has dragged on the dollar, leaving it at 111.55 yen from a top of 111.89 on Friday. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar was pinned at 96.583 having shed 0.7 percent last week.

The euro was holding at $1.1321, well up from the recent trough of $1.1174 which was hit when the European Central Bank took a dovish turn of its own.

Sterling was steady at $1.3292 as markets await some clarity on where the Brexit drama was heading.

British Prime Minister Theresa May’s government is scrambling to get support in parliament for her Brexit deal.

May has only three days to win approval for her deal to leave the European Union if she wants to go to a summit with the bloc’s leaders on Thursday with something to offer them in return for more time.

In commodity markets, spot gold was supported by the widespread decline in bond yields and stood at $1,300.35 per ounce.

Oil prices were near their highest for the year so far. U.S. crude was last off 6 cents at $58.46 a barrel, while Brent crude futures added 2 cents to $67.18.

Portugal antitrust body says top retail chains fixed drinks prices

March 22, 2019

LISBON (Reuters) – Portugal’s competition authority on Friday accused six big supermarket chains of illegally fixing prices for some drinks in collusion with three beverage suppliers between 2003 and 2017.

It said it found that Modelo Continente, owned by Portugal’s retailer Sonae, Pingo Doce, run by Jeronimo Martins, and France’s Auchan and Intermarche aligned prices for beer and beverages distributed by Heineken-owned Central de Cervejas e Bebidas and by the local Super Bock Group.

The four supermarket chains, as well as the local units of Germany’s Lidl and France’s E.Leclerc, also used the same scheme with the Portuguese wine and liquor distributor Prime Drinks, the authority said.

“If confirmed, that conduct is very serious,” the competition authority said in a statement late on Friday, adding that the case was one of the first “hub-and-spoke” schemes to be investigated in Portugal.

“This practice is equivalent to a cartel where distributors, without communicating between themselves, resort to bilateral contracts with suppliers to promote and guarantee that all practice the same public price in the retail market.”

Central de Cervejas e Bebidas denied any wrongdoing and said in a statement that it would cooperate with the authority to prove that it had acted in line with anti-trust rules.

Pingo Doce also denied wrongdoing and said it was surprised by the accusations because half of its revenues come from promotional campaigns, in which prices are often discounted.

Nobody was available for comment at the other companies.

The competition authority said it would not pre-judge the final outcome of the investigation, and that the companies will have an opportunity to defend themselves. It did not say what sanctions they could face.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
