Lieberman: Outdated Asylum Laws Must Be Reformed

The pressure at the nation's southern border has overwhelmed current asylum laws and it is time for lawmakers on both sides to get together and change them, former Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., said Monday.

"The asylum system is fundamental to American values," Lieberman, a one-time vice-presidential candidate, told Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria." "People come here with a credible fear of prosecution . . . people are coming for different reasons. Everybody ought to sit down together and say we've got a problem, solve it, instead of hurling political bolts at each other."

But Lieberman said he does support allowing asylum to people who have a credible fear of persecution or loss of freedom in their homelands, but the situation at the border is beyond that point.

"We don't want to we don't want to just shut [the border]," Lieberman said "I wouldn't want to shut it. We've got to change the rules."

Lieberman on Monday also said it was a "very good move" for President Donald Trump to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, as "they deserve it."

"They are a terrorist organization," Lieberman said. "They have the blood of hundreds of Americans, more than 600 Americans that they, through the people they trained, killed in Iraq and a lot of others at other terrorist places. This is part of the maximum pressure against Iran following the president's decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear agreement that is working."

In addition, the Iranian government is hurting, the former senator said.

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Byron Jones underwent hip surgery on Wednesday, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer.

Jones, who has not missed a game in his four-year career, is hopeful to be ready for training camp.

Jones, 26, is headed into the final year of his rookie contract, with his fifth-year option set to pay him $6.26 million.

The 27th overall pick in 2015, Jones played primarily cornerback as a rookie before spending the next two years at safety.

Jones moved back to corner full time in 2018 and had a strong season, earning a Pro Bowl nod and second-team All-Pro designation.

Jones has played in all 64 games through four NFL seasons, starting each of the past 58 games (59 starts total) for the Cowboys while collecting two interceptions, 37 passes defensed and 284 tackles.

Man who sent white powder to Trump’s sons to be sentenced

Prosecutors are seeking three years in prison for a Massachusetts man who admitted to sending threatening letters filled with white powder to President Donald Trump's sons and others.

Daniel Frisiello is set to be sentenced Friday in Boston federal court. He pleaded guilty in October.

The letter Frisiello sent to Donald Trump Jr. was opened last year by his now-ex-wife, Vanessa. She was briefly hospitalized as a precaution after she reported feeling ill. The substance turned out to be nonhazardous.

Other recipients of Frisiello's letters included Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow of Michigan.

Frisiello's lawyer is seeking five years of probation, including one year of home confinement. His lawyer says the 25-year-old has developmental delays, is autistic and would be susceptible to "exploitation, violence and isolation" in prison.

Tennis: Osaka faces lawsuit questions on Miami homecoming

MIAMI (Reuters) – World number one Naomi Osaka arrived at the Miami Open on Wednesday to face questions about a multi-million dollar lawsuit for allegedly failing to honor a contract with a former coach.

According to the lawsuit filed in Florida’s state court on Feb. 7 and seen by Reuters, Christophe Jean says he began coaching Osaka and older sister Mari in 2011.

Jean says he entered into a services contract with their father Francois in March 2012 that would pay him 20 percent of Osaka’s future earnings.

Osaka’s attorney Alex Spiro described the lawsuit as a “false claim” that has no merit.

Osaka, who has enjoyed a meteoric rise and won the last two grand slams to reach number one in the world, has career earnings of $10.8 million and has made millions more in endorsements.

Jean says that he signed a contract that would pay him a share of Osaka’s future earnings as her family were unable to pay the going rate for coaching.

Asked about the lawsuit during her pre-tournament news conference Osaka, who grew up less than three miles from Hard Rock Stadium, the new home of the Miami Open, said: “I’m not allowed to say anything. I am unable to make a comment.”

Spiro, however, said Jean was an opportunist looking to cash in.

“While it comes as no surprise that Naomi’s meteoric rise as an international icon and inspiration would lead to some false claim, this silly “contract” that Naomi never saw or signed — which purports to give away part of herself at the age of 14 — is particularly absurd,” Spiro told Reuters in an email. “This case has no merit and we will move past it.”

The 21-year-old U.S.-based Japanese player raised eyebrows last month when she announced she was parting with coach Sascha Bajin, who guided her to the Australian and U.S. Open titles.

That split, however, appeared amicable with both Osaka and Bajin wishing each other the best for the future.

Cannabis constituency? Israeli election rivals warm to pot

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Marijuana has becoming an election issue in Israel now that an upstart far-right party that favors legalizing the drug seems to be drawing voters away from conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Opinion polls originally showed the party, Zehut, would fail to win even a single seat in parliament in the April 9 ballot. But its ultranationalist leader’s focus on decriminalizing cannabis has resonated with voters.

Polls this week predicted Zehut would take at least four seats in the 120-member legislature, giving it a possible linchpin role in the formation of a future coalition government.

A cartoon in one Israeli newspaper depicted Zehut’s leader, Moshe Feiglin, holding a lit joint, with a Pied Piper-like trail of liberal voters rapt at their new, unexpected champion.

Usually focused in his campaign on national security challenges, Netanyahu said he is pondering the issue.

Asked on a TV channel run by his right-wing Likud party about decriminalization, Netanyahu said: “I am now looking into the question that you raised. I will give you an answer soon.”

In the meantime, he said, Israel has increased the use of medical cannabis “to one of the highest levels in the world”.

Medicinal use is allowed with a doctor’s permission.

But as a country with large, religious Jewish and Muslim communities, Israel had long frowned on drug use of any kind. Admission of pot-smoking could once disqualify a young Israeli from mandatory military service or a civil servant from office.

Recreational use remains illegal, if not frequently enforced. People face a potential 3 years’ jail for possessing an amount for personal use – up to 15 grams. Trafficking-level possession carries a maximum 20-year jail term.

On Tuesday, Israel’s police said they had arrested 42 people suspected of using TeleGrass, an encrypted messaging service for selling drugs that enabled Israelis to use an app on their smartphone to order marijuana delivered to their door.

Likud and its strongest challenger, the centrist Blue and White party, which has not taken a position on marijuana legalization, are locked in a closely contested race.

Joining the debate, Avi Gabbay, head of the center-left Labour party, said on Army Radio that he himself had smoked pot and it was time to “get out and join real life” in keeping up with Western leniency on its recreational use.

Israel’s parliament in December approved the export of medical cannabis, a field that the finance and health ministries estimate could reap $265 million in taxes a year. There are eight cannabis cultivation companies in Israel.

Shares of medical cannabis firm Tefen jumped 13 percent, while other cannabis producers were 2.6 percent to 7 percent higher on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange after Netanyahu’s remarks.

Report Clears Acting D-Sec. Shanahan of Ethics Violations

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan "fully complied with his ethics agreements and his ethical obligations," according to the Pentagon's watchdog review of potentially favoring Boeing, The Washington Post reported.

"While Shanahan did routinely refer to his prior industry experience in meetings, witnesses interpreted it, and told us, that he was doing it to describe his experience and to improve government management of DoD programs, rather than to promote Boeing or its products," the probe concluded, according to the Post.

The investigation exoneration of the former Boeing employee and acting defense secretary opens the door for President Donald Trump to officially nominate Shanahan as the official secretary of defense, replacing the resigned James Mattis.

Shanahan, who spent 31 years at Boeing, faced allegations of bias toward Boeing stemmed from his 18 months as deputy defense secretary, beginning in July 2017.

In a written statement summarizing the outcome of its probe, which began March 15, the inspector general's office said it "did not substantiate any of the allegations and determined that Acting Secretary Shanahan fully complied with his ethical obligations and agreements regarding Boeing and its competitors."

A spokesman for Shanahan, Army Lt. Col. Joe Buccino, said Shanahan's ethics agreement "ensures no potential for a conflict of interest with Boeing on any matter." He said Shanahan is focused on "retooling the military for great power competition," executing the national defense strategy and caring for service members and their families.

The 47-page report cited examples of Shanahan strictly adhering to the commitment he made in June 2017 not to be involved in Boeing matters. It said that in September 2017, Air Force Gen. John Hyten, the commander of U.S. Strategic Command, approach Shanahan to brief him on a Boeing program.

"General Hyten told us that Mr. Shanahan said, 'Stop. That's a Boeing program. I can't talk about it.' General Hyten told us that he asked Mr. Shanahan, 'Not even conceptually about future capabilities?' and that Mr. Shanahan said, 'No, I can't talk about that at all.'"

It quoted Mattis, who was among former officials interviewed by the IG's office, as calling Shanahan "my ethical standard bearer" and "part of my solution when it came to ethical endurance."

The report said the IG received allegations about Shanahan from several sources.

In March, a watchdog group called Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed an ethics complaint with the IG. It alleged that Shanahan has appeared to make statements promoting Boeing and disparaging competitors, such as Lockheed Martin. This and all other allegations investigated by the IG were found to be unsubstantiated.

Shanahan, 56, joined Boeing in 1986, rose through its ranks and is credited with rescuing a troubled Dreamliner 787 program. He also led the company's missile defense and military helicopter programs.

Material from the Associated Press was used in this report.

April 26, 2019

By James Davey

LONDON (Reuters) – With Sainsbury’s dream of creating Britain’s biggest supermarket group in tatters, its chastened CEO Mike Coupe needs to reassure investors he has the plan to arrest a sales decline when he presents annual results next week.

Britain’s competition regulator blocked Sainsbury’s 7.3 billion pound ($9.4 billion) takeover of Walmart’s Asda on Thursday, saying the deal would increase prices. Sainsbury’s shares fell 5 percent and are down 22 percent over the last three months.

For Sainsbury’s fourth quarter to March 9 analysts are on average forecasting a 1.6 percent fall in like-for-like sales, which would follow 1.1 percent decline over the Christmas period.

Monthly industry data from researcher Kantar has also shown Sainsbury’s as the weakest performer of the big four grocers this year and this month it lost its status as Britain’s No. 2 supermarket group by market share to Asda.

While Sainsbury’s has struggled, market leader Tesco has gained momentum, this month reporting a 34 percent jump in full year profit.

Prohibition of the deal was a major blow to Coupe, its architect and Sainsbury’s boss since 2014.

Martin Scicluna became Sainsbury’s chairman last month and when bedded-in may decide that if the group needs a major shake-up it is best carried out by a new leader.

Much will depend on the attitude of 22 percent shareholder the Qatar Investment Authority, which has so far declined to comment, as well as Coupe’s own appetite to continue after 15 years at the group.

THE RIGHT STRATEGY?

Coupe said on Thursday he was confident Sainsbury’s was pursuing the right strategy.

That was a clear indication that Wednesday’s results statement will not include radical changes to the group’s plans, such as a big margin reset — sacrificing profit to drive sales.

However, sources connected to Sainsbury’s said Coupe would likely acknowledge that more needs to be done on prices, so the supermarket business can better compete with its big four rivals – Tesco, Asda and No. 4 Morrisons – as well as German-owned discounters Aldi and Lidl.

Coupe’s strategy is based on differentiating Sainsbury’s food offer, growing its general merchandise, clothing business and bank, while investing in convenience and online channels.

Some analysts believe major change is needed.

HSBC analyst David McCarthy reckons Sainsbury’s needs a margin reset, should allocate more space for core lines and needs to drive better store standards. He said Sainsbury’s might consider closing down space in some of its larger stores and reducing its non-food offer.

For the full 2018-19 year analysts are on average forecasting a pretax profit of 626 million pounds, up from 589 million pounds in 2017-18 – a second straight year of profit growth. A full year dividend of 10.5 pence per share is forecast versus 10.2 pence last time.

Bank and lawyer fees related to the proposed combination with Asda were 17 million pounds in the first half and have reportedly jumped to around 50 million pounds.

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada posted a budget surplus in the first 11 months of the 2018/19 fiscal year compared to a deficit the year earlier as revenues increased mostly on higher tax incomes, the finance department said on Friday.

The surplus for April-February was C$3.1 billion, compared to a deficit of C$6 billion in the same 2017/18 period. Revenues climbed by 8.5 percent, mainly due to higher tax receipts, while program expenses rose by 4.8 percent.

The surplus for February was C$4.3 billion compared with C$2.8 billion in February 2018. Revenues jumped by 12.2 percent while program expenses posted a more modest 6.9 percent gain.

Last month, the Liberals unveiled their new budget, projecting a C$14.9 billion deficit in 2018/19, with the deficit rising to C$19.8 billion in fiscal 2019/20.

President Trump said Friday he would beat Joe Biden “easily” in the 2020 presidential election, suggesting the former vice president could not have enough “energy” to hold the post—taking an apparent swipe at his age.

The president, departing the White House, was asked about Biden’s entrance into the Democratic primary field. Biden announced his presidential bid early Thursday morning, marking his third attempt at the White House.

JOE BIDEN OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES 2020 PRESIDENTIAL BID

“I think we’d beat him easily,” Trump told reporters Friday.

Trump, 72, said he feels “young” and is ready for 2020, and another term for his administration.

“I feel like a young man. I am a young, vibrant man,” Trump said. “I look at Joe, I don’t know about him.”

The president’s comments seemingly were a shot at the age of Biden, who is 76.

BIDEN ENTERS WHITE HOUSE RACE WITHOUT OBAMA’S ENDORSEMENT

“I would never say anyone’s too old,” Trump said. “I know they’re all making me look very young both in terms of age and in terms of energy.”

Biden became the 20th candidate to join the crowded Democratic primary field Thursday. But Biden is not the oldest in the pack. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is 77 and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., is 69.

Should Trump be re-elected, he would be 74 on Jan. 20, 2021—Inauguration Day. Should the presidency go to one of the elder Democrats in the field—Biden would be 78; Sanders would be 79; and Warren would be 71.

Meanwhile, in a wide-ranging interview on “Hannity” Thursday night, Trump dismissed Biden’s candidacy, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe,” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Trump also said that while the former vice president has name recognition, he won’t “be able to do the job.”
