Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez’s Progressive Democrats Critical of Biden’s Bid

Former Vice President Joe Biden is running into immediate headwinds from some progressive Democrats from the party's left wing as he launches his 2020 presidential bid.

A group aligned with New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called Justice Democrats says in a lengthy statement that Biden is a centrist Democrat who could "divide the party." It says Biden could squelch progressive enthusiasm for policies like single-payer healthcare and a Green New Deal.

The group said Thursday the "old guard" already failed to defeat President Donald Trump in 2016 and cannot be counted on to excite the base in 2020. But the statement still notes that Justice Democrats will support whoever wins the Democratic nomination next year.

Biden joined the crowded Democratic presidential contest on Thursday morning, declaring the "soul of this nation" at stake if Trump wins re-election.

Report: NKorea Could Start Stealing Intellectual Property

North Korea reportedly could turn to stealing business secrets to crank up their economy, according to Axios.

Citing a theory from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, Axios reported North Korea is one of the "big four" hacking threats — along with China, Russia, and Iran — but it currently focuses on cash.

According to Axios, North Korea's long-held strategy had emphasized parallel development of nuclear and economic power. Since they have announced they achieved the first goal, that leaves the economic goal as a focus.

"North Korea will want to leapfrog its way into the global economy," Adam Meyers, vice president of intelligence at CrowdStrike, told Axios. "Vietnam is frequently mentioned as the model North Korea would follow to build a sustainable economy. But China would be on the table, too."

While CrowdStrike does not see any current intellectual property theft, Meyers suggested a shift could happen in the next two years, Axios reported.

Jenny Town, an analyst for the Stimson Center and managing editor of its North Korea-focused 38 North blog, told Axios the shift CrowdStrike is predicting is something to watch out for.

"It has been dangerous in the past to underestimate North Korea on these things," she said.

Still, Axios noted, North Korea lacks the infrastructure for the kinds of high-tech manufacturing that China succeeded with — and does not have the equipment to mass-produce cheap, modern products.

"They're making a fair amount of money through hard currency, and they'd have to reassign those resources to do this," Adam Segal, director of the digital and cyberspace policy program at the Council on Foreign Relations, told Axios.

But Robert Manning, an Atlantic Council resident senior fellow, told Axios any intellectual property theft would probably favor goods that are easy to fabricate — like pharmaceuticals and pirated movies.

(Reuters) – Viacom Inc signed a content distribution agreement with T-Mobile US Inc, under which the media company’s brands including MTV and Nickelodeon would be available to the wireless carrier’s 80 million customers, the companies said on Wednesday.

The deal enables T-Mobile to bring together live feeds of Viacom’s channels as well as a broad range of on-demand content to T-Mobile’s customers.

Last month, Viacom renewed its carriage contract with AT&T Inc, avoiding a blackout of MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central for users of the telecom carrier’s pay TV service DirecTV.

Viacom needed to resolve the AT&T contract before considering any other strategic moves, including a potential tie-up with CBS Corp, sources had told Reuters.

Shares of Viacom were up 1.5 percent at $29.26 before the bell.

South American leaders launch Prosur bloc to replace Unasur

A group of South American presidents has launched a new regional bloc to replace the Union of South American Nations that was promoted by the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to counter U.S. influence in the region.

The Unasur group was started in 2008 when many of the founding nations were still led by leftists.

But enthusiasm for the group waned, especially under more moderate or conservative successor governments, and eventually the 12 nations suspended their memberships.

Leaders of the Prosur bloc launched Friday in the Chilean capital of Santiago said it will focus on defending democracy and freedom. It was started by the presidents of: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru.

Chavez's successor, President Nicolas Maduro, was not invited not the meeting.

California ISIS supporter who bragged of bomb plots gets more than 15 years in prison

A California man who admitted to setting up social media accounts to support the Islamic State (ISIS) and told an undercover FBI agent that he wanted to attack bars and nightclubs in the Bay Area was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years and eight months behind bars by a federal judge.

Amer Alhaggagi, 23, pleaded guilty in July to one count of attempting to provide services and personnel to ISIS, one count of possessing an identity theft device, one count of unauthorized identity theft and one count of aggravated identity theft. U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer ordered Alhaggagi to serve 10 years of supervised release in addition to his prison term.

The Justice Department said in a statement that Alhaggagi admitted to creating Facebook, Twitter and Gmail accounts for two ISIS supporters he met online in the fall of 2016, and created similar accounts for other people that "he believed were ISIS supporters."

ISIS BRIDE'S DAD SUING TRUMP, US TO LET HER BACK IN THE COUNTRY

Prosecutors said Alhaggagi posted a series of threats online in which he promised to "redefine terror" and vowed that "the whole Bay Area [gonna] be in flames." Authorities say one of his plans called for the detonation of a car bomb outside a gay nightclub in San Francisco and the planting of backpack bombs on streets used by emergency vehicles in a bid to kill first responders.

On another occasion, Alhaggagi was driving with an undercover agent when he pointed out bars and clubs in Berkeley "where all the students are."

"It’s a nice area to attack," Alhaggagi allegedly told the informant. "It’s like, everybody’s in their own world, just doing their thing. ... It’s not hard to target places, because there’s people everywhere. But I was trying to target, you know, like clubs, you know, like dance clubs, bars ... stuff like that."

CONVOY OF CIVILIANS LEAVES LAST ISIS VILLAGE IN SYRIA

"Alhaggagi wanted to carry out deadly terrorist attacks in the United States in the name of ISIS," Assistant Attorney General John Demers of the Justice Department's National Security Division said in a statement. "Today’s sentencing shows the dedication of the National Security Division and our partners to hold accountable those who seek to provide material support to foreign terrorist organizations and to conduct violence on their behalf."

Alhaggagi and his attorneys tried to portray the Berkeley High School graduate as an out-of-work, pot-smoking internet "troll" seeking only to provoke and annoy with violent, anti-American claims. Attorney Mary McNamara called the oldest son of Yemeni-born parents a "class clown." Federal probation officials recommended a four-year prison sentence, and 150 members of Oakland's Yemeni community signed a letter given to Judge Breyer that urged leniency. The letter said the community was creating an educational program to teach children about online behavior and speech and how to properly respond to online strangers advocating terrorism.

"I find it hard to look and listen to all the horrible things I said to the undercover agent," Alhaggagi told the court before he was sentenced. "I made myself look like a crazy person."

However, Breyer rejected the defense's portrayal of Alhagaggi.

"Words matter," the judge said. "The most disturbing thing in Alhaggagi is the lack of empathy for others. That is chilling."

Trump tweets donation check to Homeland Security

President Donald Trump has tweeted a picture of a $100,000 check he recently wrote to the Department of Homeland Security, his latest donation to a federal agency.

Trump pledged as a candidate in 2016 to not accept the $400,000 annual presidential salary he would be due if elected.

Trump says the press doesn't like writing about his donations "nor do I need them to."

He also claims if he didn't make the donations, there would be "hell to pay from the FAKE NEWS MEDIA!"

By law, he must be paid, so Trump has donated the quarterly payments to various federal departments and agencies.

(Reuters) – Viacom Inc said on Wednesday it will provide programming on fuboTV’s live TV streaming service, part of an industry trend of cord-cutting that also has Viacom distributing content through “vitual pay-TV” providers Sling TV, DirectTV Now and Philo.

New York-based fuboTV is a four-year-old streaming service that focused on soccer before expanding into other sports and carrying entertainment programming from networks such as FX and Showtime.

Viacom will include content from its nine core media networks, which include Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon, in fuboTV’s base package, “fubo,” which costs $44.99 per month. Additional Viacom channels will be available in the premier package, “fubo Extra,”for $49.99 per month.

Disney, AT&T and Apple are expected to launch streaming services this year. Comcast, through NBCUniversal, plans to launch an ad-supported streaming service next year.

In January, Viacom acquired Pluto TV, a free video streaming service, for $340 million in cash in an effort to expand its advanced advertising business.

A California man who allegedly fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight last month before fleeing the country has been returned to the U.S. following his arrest in Mexico on Wednesday, authorities said.

Julio Cesar Rocha, 25, of Montlcair, is accused of shooting his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend Thalia Flores and a second unidentified male victim March 21 around 2:45 p.m. while the two were sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of a discount store in Chino. Both communities are about 36 miles east of Los Angeles.

Flores died at the scene. The man, whose name was not released, walked to a nearby hospital where he’s recovering from his gunshot wounds.

Rocha allegedly fled the scene and remained at large for more than a month, the Daily Bulletin reported. He was formally arrested at 4:30 p.m. after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport from Mexico, KTLA-TV reported.

The suspect was booked at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on murder and attempted murder charges, the City of Chino Police Department said on Facebook.

Flores ended her seven-year relationship with Rocha just two months before her death and still lived in fear of him until that point, a sister of the victim, Bernice Flores, told the Daily Bulletin.

“He said himself so many times to other people, ‘If I can’t have her, no one will.’ ” Flores said, adding that her sister stayed in the relationship longer that she would have liked in fear that Rocha would hurt her or her family if they broke up.

Rocha was convicted on misdemeanor battery in 2016 and sentenced to 60 days in prison. He was originally charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, but the charges were lowered in a plea deal, the Daily Bulletin reported.

Rocha was convicted of misdemeanor resisting or obstructing a peace officer in 2014. A second charge of misdemeanor battery was dropped in a plea deal, and Rocha was ordered to complete a 26-week anger management course, according to San Bernardino County Superior Court records. Rocha was later arrested and sentenced to 10 days behind bars for failing to complete the course.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”
