‘MAGA’ Hat-Wearing Assailant Attacks Man With Sword

A man in a pirate costume wearing a red “Make America Great Again” slashed another man’s hand with a sword Friday night in San Francisco after the pair got into a verbal dispute, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

The incident happened around 9:50 p.m. outside a popular skating rink in the city’s Western Addition. Police originally said the victim was wearing a MAGA hat but changed their statement Sunday to say it was the suspect who was wearing the hat.

Scott Sweeney, 24, told the Chronicle the assailant was shouting homophobic slurs at him.

“In my mind I didn’t think it was a real sword until we came out later and police were on the scene and there was blood and the hat on ground,” he said.

Robert Rueca, a police spokesperson for the SFPD, said the victim was stabbed after he approached the suspect.

The MAGA hat has become a source of contention since President Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election.

Just last month an 81-year-old New Jersey man was assaulted during an attack stemming over his MAGA hat.

The man was shopping at a supermarket when the scuffle took place.

Wisconsin high school cheerleaders received awards for biggest breasts, butt at banquet

A Wisconsin high school has reportedly come under fire for a cheerleading award ceremony last year that saw some of the teens win awards such as the “Big Boobie” and “Big Booty” awards.

Appalled parents contacted the American Civil Liberties Union and on Tuesday the group sent a warning to the Kenosha Unified School District that it might file a lawsuit over Tremper High School’s mock awards ceremony, The New York Times reported.

EX-NFL CHEERLEADER DETAILS EXTREME WEIGHT LOSS METHODS TEAMMATES WOULD ADOPT

The ACLU accused the cheerleading coaches at the school of making inappropriate comments toward the students and claimed the district was “enabling sexual harassment,” The New York Times reported. The group called on the district to take appropriate action against the coaches.

Tremper High School cheerleading coaches gave out awards to a girl for her supposedly “enormous boobs” and also a “Big Booty” award to another because “everybody loves her butt.” A freshman cheerleader also received the “String Bean” award because she was “so light and skinny.”

Parents who were at the event told The New York Times they were uncomfortable with the content.

“I looked around and thought, ‘Did that just happen?’ If my daughter would have won one of those awards, I would’ve absolutely been rushing the stage. It was just so wrong, in so many ways,” one mother told the newspaper.

Tremper High School Principal Steve Knecht was reportedly contacted about the awards by several other coaches and addressed the issue with cheerleading coach Patti Uttech. The cheerleading coach told Knecht that the awards were first given out in 2017 and that the senior class had originally picked them out because of the things cheerleaders are required to do every day.

“They are always getting butts in their faces and other body parts,” Uttech told school administrators, according to The New York Times.

Uttech was asked to resign in May 2018 and told if she wanted to still be a part of the team it should be in a behind-the-scenes capacity, the newspaper reported. Uttech apologized to the girls but refused to resign.

Tremper High School was told not to give out those kinds of awards at any future banquets.

“In regards to the Tremper incident, a clear expectation has been set that awards of this nature are not acceptable and are not to be given at Tremper cheerleading banquets going forward,” a Kenosha Unified School District spokeswoman told FOX6 in a statement. “As for the investigation, we are not at liberty to share personnel matters.”

European stocks edge lower as threat of U.S. tariffs hits Airbus, suppliers

April 9, 2019

(Reuters) – European shares opened slightly lower on Tuesday, weighed down by planemaker Airbus and its suppliers, which took a hit from proposed U.S. tariffs, while an event-packed week kept investors cautious.

At 0728 GMT, the pan-European STOXX 600 index dipped 0.07 percent, with Paris’s CAC down 0.2 percent and Frankfurt’s trade-sensitive DAX off 0.1 percent.

Shares of planemaker Airbus dropped 2.5 percent after the U.S. Trade Representative proposed tariffs on a list of European Union products including large commercial aircraft and parts. Washington is seeking to retaliate for more than $11 billion worth of EU subsidies to Airbus that the World Trade Organization has found cause “adverse effects” for the United States.

Airbus suppliers such as Safran, Leonardo and Dassault lost between 0.7 percent and 1.2 percent.

Investors are also keeping a close eye on a trade summit between the European Union and China on Tuesday in which the bloc will try to coax Beijing to open up its markets.

The European Central Bank is expected to hold borrowing costs when its policymakers meet on Wednesday, the same day British Prime Minister Theresa May’s request to delay Brexit until June 30 will be formally discussed by EU leaders at a special summit.

Swiss drugmaker Novartis slipped over 2 percent, among the biggest drags on STOXX 600, trading for the first day after completing the spin off its eyecare division Alcon.

Alcon shares surged 32 percent in its debut.

Bechtle AG dropped more than 2 percent and pulled the tech sector lower after Berenberg downgraded the German IT company’s stock to “hold”.

Merck KGaA dipped on winning the backing of Versum’s board for a sweetened $6.5 billion takeover bid, overturning an agreed merger with rival Entegris as it bets on a recovery in electronic materials markets.

Norwegian mobile operator Telenor slipped after agreeing to buy a 54 percent stake in Finnish telecoms firm DNA for 1.5 billion euros ($1.69 billion).

Keeping losses in check were shares of Total SA, which rose after the French oil and gas major and its partners signed a long-awaited deal with Papua New Guinea that will allow initial work to start on a $13 billion plan to double the country’s liquefied natural gas exports.

Brazil central bank chief says needs time to analyze mounting economic risks

Senior banking executive Roberto Campos Neto, nominee by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to head the Brazil's Central Bank, participates a meeting at CAE of the Brazilian Federal Senate in Brasilia

By Jamie McGeever

BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazil’s central bank will take its time analyzing the economic impact from an increasing number of shocks from abroad and rising political tension at home that appear to be slowing the government’s reform process, its president said on Thursday.

In his first press conference as central bank chief, Roberto Campos Neto also said that volatility and uncertainty have increased lately, but noted that the current global economic slowdown is not severe enough to threaten global liquidity.

Speaking after the central bank cut its 2019 economic growth forecast to 2.0 percent from 2.4 percent in its quarterly inflation report, Campos Neto said policymakers must look through short-term market, economic and political volatility when deciding policy.

“Regarding recent shocks, the main message is inflation risks are now symmetrical, down from asymmetrical (to the upside), so we need more time,” he told reporters, noting that this signals policymakers have no bias regarding their next move.

Specifically, growth and inflationary pressures have weakened recently due to persistent slack in the Brazilian economy, a global slowdown, and rising uncertainty over domestic reforms, he added.

Campos Neto said he is confident the government’s signature plan to slash social security spending will be approved, but admitted that the political environment had deteriorated recently and market optimism has diminished.

This has slammed Brazilian markets, prompting the central bank to carry out a $1 billion repurchase operation to relieve pressure on the real. This is an “appropriate” step at the appropriate time, Campos Neto said, and does not represent a change in strategy.

Interest rate traders are almost fully discounting a central bank rate hike from the current record low 6.50 percent within the next year. Last week, they attached a 50-50 probability rates would be cut.

Australia says Sri Lankan allegations should be investigated

Australia says its armed forces have no qualms about working with Sri Lankan security forces accused of grave human rights violations during the country's civil war, but those allegations must be taken seriously and investigated.

Acting Ambassador John Philp said Friday that Australia wants to look to the future following the end of the war 10 years ago.

Government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels were both accused of grave violations during the war.

Philp was speaking abroad the HMAS Canberra, one of four Royal Australian Navy ships visiting Sri Lanka as part of defense corporation between the two countries.

Air Commodore Richard Owen said the two sides are exploring ways of combating common threats in the region. He said Australian defense industry representatives also made a presentation on their products.

February 22, 2019

Jamie Benn recorded his second two-goal game of the season, and the Dallas Stars ended the visiting St. Louis Blues’ franchise-record, 11-game winning streak with a 5-2 decision Thursday.

The Blues had not dropped a game since a 4-3 loss at Los Angeles on Jan. 21.

Radek Faksa and Tyler Seguin each added a goal and an assist for the Stars, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Alexander Radulov also scored for Dallas, which got two assists from Esa Lindell. Stars goalie Anton Khudobin made 43 saves to win for the second time in his past seven games.

Ryan O’Reilly had a goal and an assist for St. Louis, which also got a goal from Vladimir Tarasenko. Blues goalie Jordan Binnington made 20 saves but saw his nine-game winning streak end.

Lightning 2, Sabres 1 (SO)

Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov scored in a shootout to lead host Tampa Bay past Buffalo, the Lightning’s eighth straight win.

Kucherov made history in the second period when he buried his 30th goal for his 100th point, making him the first Lightning player with multiple 100-point seasons. The Russian winger is the first NHL player to record 100 points (30 goals, NHL-best 70 assists) in 62 games or fewer since Mario Lemieux accomplished it in 61 games in the 1996-97 season.

Rasmus Dahlin scored a goal for the Sabres, who lost their fourth straight and dropped three of the four meetings in the season series with Tampa Bay.

Sharks 4, Penguins 0

Martin Jones made 26 saves, Tomas Hertl scored twice, and San Jose rode its special teams to a win at Pittsburgh.

Hertl’s goals came on power plays, and Evander Kane scored short-handed. Brent Burns had a power-play goal and two assists. Kevin Labanc also had two assists.

Jones, who picked up his 29th win, earned his 21st career shutout — first against the Penguins — and second this season. San Jose, which was kicking off a four-game road trip, is 8-1-1 in its past 10 games. Casey DeSmith made 29 saves for Pittsburgh, which had won four of its previous five.

Canadiens 5, Flyers 1

Brendan Gallagher scored his first career NHL hat trick to lead Montreal past visiting Philadelphia.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Tomas Tatar also scored for Canadiens, who improved to 8-1-2 in their past 11 home games. Carey Price saved 29 of 30 shots for his 25th victory of the season.

Michael Raffl scored 10:23 into the third period for Philadelphia’s lone goal of the game. For the second game in a row, goalie Carter Hart was pulled in the first period after allowing three goals on nine shots.

Wild 4, Rangers 1

Zach Parise scored a goal and added an assist as Minnesota snapped a five-game losing streak with a victory at New York.

Jared Spurgeon, Mikael Granlund and Jordan Greenway also scored for the Wild, and Eric Staal and Ryan Donato each had two assists. The Wild had been shut out in their previous two games and won for just the second time (2-7-3) in 11 games since the All-Star break. Devan Dubnyk made 33 saves.

Pavel Buchnevich scored the lone goal for the Rangers, and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 31 of 34 shots.

Predators 2, Kings 1

Roman Josi had a goal with an assist to help Nashville move into first place in the Central Division thanks to a home victory over Los Angeles.

Pekka Rinne made several key saves and 28 total for the Predators, who now sit one point ahead of the slumping Winnipeg Jets for the Central lead. Kyle Turris also scored for Nashville, which has won three of four following an 0-2-1 slide.

The Kings, who got a goal from Michael Amadio, matched a season high with their sixth straight defeat.

Devils 4, Senators 0

Cory Schneider made 30 saves to record his 25th career shutout as New Jersey skated to a victory over Ottawa in Newark, N.J.

Miles Wood collected a goal and an assist before exiting late in the second period with an undisclosed injury. Travis Zajac and Steven Santini also scored, and Kurtis Gabriel recorded his first career NHL goal for the Devils, who have won three of their past four.

The NHL-worst Senators took a ninth loss in their past 12 contests.

Hurricanes 4, Panthers 3

Justin Williams scored two goals — including one that hit him in the face — to help Carolina rally for a win at Sunrise, Fla.

Williams, who also had an assist, left the ice bleeding after he scored Carolina’s first goal — off his right cheekbone. He quickly returned with gauze in his nose and then scored Carolina’s fourth goal, giving the Hurricanes a 4-3 lead with 17:45 left in the third.

The Panthers got three straight second-period goals in a span of 4:15, from Evgenii Dadonov, Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau. That gave Florida a 3-2 lead, but Carolina rallied with two third-period goals, from Justin Faulk and Williams. Nino Niederreiter scored Carolina’s other goal.

Capitals 3, Maple Leafs 2

Tom Wilson scored a short-handed goal and added an assist to help Washington prevail at Toronto.

Alex Ovechkin and Brett Connolly also scored one goal each, and Lars Eller added two assists for the Capitals, who are 3-2-0 during their six-game road trip. Washington’s Braden Holtby stopped 40 shots.

Andreas Johnsson and John Tavares scored for the Maple Leafs, who have lost three in a row. Frederik Andersen made 25 saves.

Coyotes 3, Canucks 2 (OT)

Alex Galchenyuk scored 1:54 into overtime to lead visiting Arizona past Vancouver.

Galchenyuk scored on a fake wraparound as he went one way behind the net and backtracked and tucked the puck in. He also had an assist as the Coyotes posted their fifth win in the past seven games. Jakob Chychrun and Lawson Crouse added goals for the Coyotes.

Bo Horvat and Adam Gaudette tallied for the Canucks, and Antoine Roussel assisted on both goals. Vancouver lost for the fourth time in its past five outings.

Oilers 4, Islanders 3 (OT)

Connor McDavid scored the winner to cap a two-point game, and Leon Draisaitl also notched one goal and one assist as host Edmonton snapped a five-game losing skid with an overtime victory against New York.

McDavid converted a backhand shot 82 seconds into the extra frame, a goal set up by Draisaitl. Sam Gagner and Oscar Klefbom also scored, and Oilers goalie Mikko Koskinen stopped 20 shots.

Brock Nelson, Anders Lee and Cal Clutterbuck tallied for New York, which lost for the second night in a row. Robin Lehner made 37 saves.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Federal Reserve may lower the interest it pays on excess reserves banks leave with it by 5 basis points at its April 30-May 1 policy meeting in a bid to prevent the federal funds rate from drifting higher, Morgan Stanley analysts said on Friday.

This would mark the third such “technical” adjustment on the interest on excess reserves (IOER) following cuts last June and December.

Tennis - Australian Open - Women's Singles Final
FILE PHOTO: Tennis – Australian Open – Women’s Singles Final – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, January 26, 2019. Japan’s Naomi Osaka attends a news conference after winning her match against Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova. REUTERS/Adnan Abidi

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – World number one Naomi Osaka came from behind in the final set to beat Croatian Donna Vekic 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) on Friday and move into the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix semi-finals.

Osaka comfortably won the opening set but was tested by the Croatian, who pushed her to the limit in the second and third. The Japanese made 45 unforced errors as she struggles to get to grips with swapping hard courts for clay.

Osaka was visibly frustrated and trailed 5-1 in the final set but she refused to give up and found her rhythm to break Vekic twice and prevent her from serving for the match.

In the tiebreaker, a confident Osaka upped her baseline game and had two early mini breaks before wrapping up the match in two hours and 18 minutes. An infuriated Vekic even smashed her racket after losing the match.

“I told myself I didn’t want to have any regrets here,” Osaka said. “I was stressed out when I went down 1-5… but this (comeback) was pretty good because I don’t play really well on clay.”

Earlier, world number three Petra Kvitova came back from a set down to beat Anastasija Sevastova 2-6 6-2 6-3 and move into the tournament’s semi-finals for the third time in her career.

Sevastova had a dream start, breaking Kvitova twice to take a 3-0 lead as the Czech struggled with her first serve. Kvitova also made a slew of unforced errors, with many of her returns going long.

Sevastova used the full width of the court to get the better of Kvitova, who played on the back foot for much of the first set as the Latvian gave her little time to catch her breath.

However, Kvitova recovered in the second set and she broke Sevastova’s serve when she was 3-2 up, winning 10 straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Sevastova looked shaken and was broken again to give Kvitova the second set.

Kvitova took command in the final set and broke a visibly upset Sevastova to take a 3-1 lead before easing into the semis.

“In the first set I missed almost everything. I was pretty slow and she just couldn’t miss,” Kvitova said. “In the second set it was very important for me to stay on my serve and the chance to break her came.”

Kiki Bertens plays Angelique Kerber later on Friday and Victoria Azarenka faces Anett Kontaveit in the last quarter-final.

The Latest on fatal pileup on Interstate 70 near Denver (all times local):

10:10 a.m.

Colorado officials say four people have died after a semi-truck hauling lumber plowed into vehicles on Interstate 70, causing a fire so intense that it melted the roadway and metal off of cars.

Authorities had to wait until daylight Friday to confirm the death toll from Thursday’s 28-vehicle pileup because of the devastation caused by the fire.

Six people were taken to hospitals with injuries. Their conditions are unclear.

Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman says the driver of the truck who caused the crash sustained minor injuries. He has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

Officials say the driver was headed down a hill when he slammed into slower traffic. Countryman says there is no indication the crash was intentional.

7:40 a.m.

A truck driver blamed for causing a deadly pileup involving over two dozen vehicles near Denver has been arrested on vehicular homicide charges.

Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman said Friday that there’s no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in Thursday’s crash.

The unidentified driver was headed down a hill on Interstate 70 when he slammed into slower traffic and sparked a massive fire. Countryman said police are looking at whether his brakes were working properly.

He said 28 vehicles were involved, up from the initial 15 vehicles police reported after further sorting through the burned wreckage.

Police still say there were multiple fatalities but are still working to provide an exact number.

The highway is expected to remain closed until Saturday.

Tiger woods celebrates after winning the 2019 Masters
FILE PHOTO: Golf – Masters – Augusta National Golf Club – Augusta, Georgia, U.S. – April 14, 2019 – Tiger Woods of the U.S. celebrates on the 18th hole after winning the 2019 Masters. REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson

April 26, 2019

Tiger Woods is sending a message that he thinks he still has enough left, emotionally and physically, to win three more major championships to tie Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 titles.

Speaking to GolfTV in his first sit-down interview since the Masters, Woods said he has taken some time off since his victory at Augusta National, which still doesn’t feel real.

“Honestly, it’s hard to believe,” Woods said. “I was texting one of my good friends last night … that I couldn’t believe that I won the tournament. That it really hasn’t sunk in. I haven’t started doing anything. I’ve just been laying there. And every now and again, I’ll look over there on the couch and there’s the jacket.”

That’s the fifth green jacket for the 43-year-old Woods, who hadn’t won a major tournament since the 2008 U.S. Open. Along the way, four back surgeries, a divorce and other personal issues derailed him.

He said he has been spending time with his children – daughter Sam, 11, and son Charlie, 10 – who weren’t born when their father was the most dominant golfer on the planet.

“They never knew golf to be a good thing in my life and only the only thing they remember is that it brought this incredible amount of pain to their dad and they don’t want to ever want to see their dad in pain,” Woods said. “And so to now have them see this side of it, the side that I’ve experienced for so many years of my life, but I had a battle to get back to this point, it feels good.”

He said he hopes – maybe expects — they’ll see this side again.

And no one will take Woods for granted at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black Course on Long Island, N.Y., which starts May 16.

Woods said he’ll be ready for a course he already conquered once in a major: the 2002 U.S. Open.

“I’m doing all the visual stuff, but I haven’t put in the physical work yet. But it’s probably coming this weekend,” he said.

Before Woods encountered health and personal problems, it was expected that topping Nicklaus’ major mark was “when” and not “if.” Then the certainty went away, but Woods thought he still had a chance.

“I always thought it was possible, if I had everything go my way. It took him an entire career to get to 18, so now that I’ve had another extension to my career – one that I didn’t think I had a couple of years ago – if I do things correctly and everything falls my way, yeah, it’s a possibility. I’m never going to say it’s not.

“Now I just need to have a lot of things go my way, and who’s to say that it will or will not happen? That’s what the future holds, I don’t know. The only thing I can promise you is this: that I will be prepared.”

Maria Butina, the Russian woman who was accused of being a secret agent for the Russian government, was sentenced to 18 months in prison Friday by a federal judge in Washington after pleading guilty last year to a conspiracy charge.

Butina, who has already served nine months behind bars, will get credit for time served and can possibly get credit for good behavior, the judge said. She will be removed from the U.S. promptly on completion of her time, the judge added, and returned to Russia.

MARIA BUTINA, ACCUSED RUSSIAN SPY, PLEADS GUILTY TO CONSPIRACY

An emotional and apologetic Butina said in court Friday she is “truly sorry” and regrets not registering as a foreign agent.

“I feel ashamed and embarrassed,” she said, adding that her “reputation is ruined.”

Butina has been jailed since her arrest in July 2018. She entered the court Friday wearing a dark green prison jumpsuit and spoke in clear English, with a slight Russian accent.

“Please accept my apologies,” Butina said.

Butina’s lawyer, Robert Driscoll, said after the sentencing they had hoped for a “better outcome,” but expressed a desire for Butina to be released to her family by the fall.

Prosecutors had claimed Butina used her contacts with the National Rifle Association and the National Prayer Breakfast to develop relationships with U.S. politicians and gather information for Russia.

Prosecutors also have said that Butina’s boyfriend, conservative political operative Paul Erickson, identified in court papers as “U.S. Person 1,” helped her establish ties with the NRA.

WHO IS MARIA BUTINA, THE RUSSIAN WOMAN ACCUSED OF SPYING ON US?

In their filings, prosecutors claim federal agents found Butina had contact information for people suspected of being employed by Russia’s Federal Security Services, or FSB, the successor intelligence agency to the KGB. Inside her home, they found notes referring to a potential job offer from the FSB, according to the documents.

Investigators recovered several emails and Twitter direct message conversations in which Butina referred to the need to keep her work secret and, in one instance, said it should be “incognito.” Prosecutors said Butina had contact with Russian intelligence officials and that the FBI photographed her dining with a diplomat suspected of being a Russian intelligence agent.
