Israel PM convenes military brass after apparent rocket fire

Israel's prime minister has convened an urgent meeting with senior military officials following a rocket attack on Tel Aviv from the Gaza Strip.

Israeli media said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is also Israel's defense minister, was meeting with his military chief and other senior advisers late Thursday to plan a response.

The military said two rockets were apparently fired from Gaza, setting off air raid sirens in Israel's commercial and cultural capital. It was the first time Tel Aviv has been targeted since a 2014 war with Gaza militants.

The rare attack is an escalation and was likely to trigger a harsh Israeli response.

Nicaragua police deny permit for protest anniversary march

Nicaragua's national police have denied a permit request for a march to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the start of anti-government protests, setting up a possible conflict with the opposition, which has called for the march to go on.

The police say the request did not meet legal requirements. The opposition Blue and White National Unity coalition had sought the permit for a march on Wednesday, but police said the two people who applied were involved in serious public disturbances in previous weeks.

Public demonstrations have been effectively banned for months.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on Tuesday urged the government to allow protests and "avoid repression."

The government said it had released 636 prisoners to home detention, but it was unclear how many were political prisoners.

Portuguese PM withstands no confidence motion in parliament

By Catarina Demony

LISBON (Reuters) – Portugal’s minority Socialist government of Prime Minister Antonio Costa on Wednesday survived an opposition motion of no confidence lodged over a recent wave of public sector strikes.

The motion, fielded by the conservative CDS-PP party last week and seen as largely symbolic because the Socialists are backed in parliament by the far-left Communists and Left Block, was rejected by a 115-103 margin in the 230-seat parliament.

Portugal, which faces a general election in October, has seen various public sector walkouts and street protests in the past few months, from nurses fighting for better salaries to firefighters and police officers protesting inadequate funding.

The Socialists are far ahead of other parties in opinion polls, though still well shy of a parliamentary majority.

“The strikes reveal a government unable to maintain social peace,” CDS-PP leader Assuncao Cristas told parliament before the vote. The CDS-PP was part of the previous centre-right administration, whose painful austerity campaign during Portugal’s 2011-14 bailout caused widespread strife.

Earlier on Wednesday, the leader of one of Portugal’s main nurses’ unions began a hunger strike to demand better pay and working conditions while criticising the authorities for clamping down on the strike, declared “unlawful” by the prosecutor general’s office on Tuesday.

Defending his government’s record, which includes lower taxes, wage and pension increases, Costa said the vote “only showed that the right is still a minority” in Portugal.

Finance Minister Mario Centeno previously labelled the increase in strike action as “absolutely normal” in a growing economy that was making workers more demanding even as the state increased spending.

The Socialists and their allies have reversed some austerity steps while maintaining budget discipline to reduce the deficit and keeping growth rates at above the euro zone’s average in the past two years. Unemployment has dropped to 16-year lows.

Sperm donor tells Australian High Court he is legally father to lesbian couple’s daughter

The High Court of Australia has begun hearing arguments over whether a sperm donor can have custody over the child he helped create.

Robert Masson, as he is known to the court, has taken a lesbian couple to the country’s High Court, claiming he is legally the father to their young daughter, according to the Australian Associated Press.

He claims one of the females, a friend of over 25 years, approached him in 2006 about donating sperm on the understanding that he would play an important role emotionally and financially in the child’s life.

Masson is listed as the father on the girl’s birth certificate, according to the Australian, and his legal team has argued the significant presence in the daughter’s life and that he is referred to as “Daddy” by both his biological daughter as well as the couple’s other child.

AMERICAN EXTRADITED TO AUSTRALIA CHARGED WITH GRUESOME BOUND AND GAG MURDER

When the couple attempted to leave the country with Masson’s daughter, he decided to take legal action to keep her in Australia.

The case has become a constitutional issue after both parties argued a discrepancy between the state and Commonwealth laws. State law argues that a sperm donor is not a parent, while Commonwealth law states that the biological parent is responsible for the child.

The result will become a landmark decision in the argument over what the legal requirements are to be a parent.

DUTCH FERTILITY DOCTOR SECRETLY FATHERED 49 CHILDREN, DNA TESTS REVEAL

A judge presiding over the case asked Tuesday: “Is there not a difference between the university student who is a donor to a sperm bank for a few bob and the sperm donor who plays a role in the life of the child?”

The case was originally argued in Family court where the women were barred from crossing the border with Masson’s biological child. The ruling judge found that the father must be consulted on long-term decisions affecting the child.

“Being a biological parent is not the whole answer to the question ‘who is a parent?’,” ruling Justice Margaret Cleary said in an official statement.

According to the Court’s calendar, they will continue hearing arguments this week.

Kellyanne Conway Defends Trump Against Husband's Attacks

Kellyanne Conway on Wednesday criticized her husband for ripping into President Donald Trump and defended her boss, calling him a “counterpuncher” who shouldn’t take the attacks sitting down.

“He left it alone for months out of respect for me,” Conway, a counselor to the president, told Politico in a telephone interview. “But you think he shouldn’t respond when somebody, a non-medical professional accuses him of having a mental disorder? You think he should just take that sitting down?”

Trump’s feud with George Conway has played out with hated rhetoric on social media. George Conway last week questioned Trump’s mental health, to which the president fired back:

“George Conway, often referred to as Mr. Kellyanne Conway by those who know him, is VERY jealous of his wife’s success & angry that I, with her help, didn’t give him the job he so desperately wanted. I barely know him but just take a look, a stone cold LOSER & husband from hell!”

Kellyanne Conway told Politico her husband shouldn’t “play psychiatrist” and said the president was “obviously defending me. He could privately say to me, ‘Honey you’re a distraction. We love you. You'll always be a part of the family but go be with your kids. They need you. Go make a million dollars an hour. Go do that honey.’ It’s the opposite.”

Biden joins striking union members in Boston as speculation mounts over 2020 run

Former Vice President Joe Biden made an appearance on Thursday at a rally for striking grocery store workers in Boston, where he expressed his solidarity with the union members and his anger at corporate America.

Biden, who is widely expected to soon announce a run for the presidency, highlighted his working-class upbringing in Pennsylvania and his disdain for unfair labor practices.

“Wall Street CEOs and bankers did not build America, you built America,” Biden told a crowd of United Food and Commercial Workers International Union gathered outside a Stop & Shop market in the Dorchester neighborhood.

TRUMP PREDICTS BIDEN, SANDERS, WILL BE THE TWO DEM 2020 FINALISTS

More than 30,000 UFCW Stop & Shop workers have been on strike since April 11 as they fight the company over what they've called unreasonable contract and benefit cuts.

“This is morally wrong what is going on around the country, and I’m sick of it, and I’ve had enough of it,” Biden said. “We’ve got to stand to together, and we will take back our country.”

While Biden has not officially declared that he plans to challenge President Trump for the White House, recent polling indicates that he is considered one of the front-runners for the Democratic nomination, alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. A recent poll by Fox News shows that Biden holds a seven-point lead in a head-to-head race against Trump, while Sanders holds a three-point lead over Trump.

POLLS SUGGEST VOTERS SHRUGGING OFF BIDEN INAPPROPRIATE TOUCHING CONTROVERSY

Looking ahead to his re-election campaign, Trump predicted in a tweet earlier this week that he would face either Biden or Sanders in the general election next year.

Sanders is leading a crowded 2020 Democratic presidential field in fundraising so far, raising $18 million.

Winning back working class voters is of major importance to the 2020 Democratic after the party suffered major losses in union-heavy states like Michigan and Pennsylvania in the 2016 election. Biden has already been courting union voters even before he has officially entered the race.

“You are coming back," he told the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers last week. "We need you back."

CLICK HERE FOR THE FOX NEWS APP

Biden is not the only potential candidate courting union votes: Sanders’ campaign became the first in U.S. history with a unionized workforce, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren joined striking Stop & Shop workers on a picket line in New Hampshire last Friday and California Sen. Kamala Harris hired a top Service Employees International Union executive for her campaign and made her first proposal one to raise teacher's pay.

Major union endorsements are likely several months away, especially because the labor movement is treading carefully after complaints that its leadership was too quick to back Hillary Clinton in the 2016 primary over Sanders.

HOUSTON (Reuters) – Chevron Corp on Friday pushed back at the potential for a rival to break up its $33 billion deal for Anadarko Petroleum Corp, saying the two companies had already begun meetings on a merger plan.

Occidental Petroleum on Thursday sought to scuttle the proposed deal, submitting a higher, $38 billion cash-and-stock offer for Anadarko. Anadarko’s board said on Thursday it would evaluate the new proposal.

“I’ll just remind everyone that we’ve got a signed deal that has been approved by both boards and we’ve moving forward with integration planning,” said Chevron Chief Executive Michael Wirth on a conference call with analysts. He said a “sizeable” group of employees had already met.

Wirth declined to say whether Chevron would raise its offer in light of Occidental’s higher bid. Chevron has the ability revise the structure of its 75 percent stock, 25 percent cash bid, Chevron finance chief Pierre Breber said on the same call. “We could put more cash in if that’s what Anadarko wanted to do,” he said.

LONDON (Reuters) – A London court case to extradite Arif Naqvi, founder of collapsed private equity firm Abraaj Group, to the United States on fraud charges was adjourned until May 24, a court official said on Friday.

Naqvi was remanded in custody until that date, the official said. A former managing partner of Dubai-based Abraaj, Sev Vettivetpillai, was released on conditional bail to appear again at Westminster Magistrates Court on June 12, the official said.

Under the U.S. charges, both men are accused of defrauding U.S. investors by inflating positions held by Abraaj in order to attract greater funds from them, causing them financial loss, the official said.

Vettivetpillai could not be reached for a comment.

Naqvi, in a statement released through a PR firm, has pleaded innocent.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alleges that Naqvi and his firm raised money for the Abraaj Growth Markets Health Fund, collecting more than $100 million over three years from U.S.-based charitable organizations and other U.S. investors.

Naqvi and Vettivetpillai were arrested in Britain earlier this month. Another executive, Mustafa Abdel-Wadood was arrested at a New York hotel, Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrea Griswold said at a hearing in Manhattan federal court on April 11.

Abdel-Wadood appeared at the Manhattan hearing and pleaded not guilty to securities fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy charges.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, in his first interview as a Democratic presidential candidate, said on Friday that he does not believe he treated law professor Anita Hill badly during the 1991 confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

Biden had joined the burgeoning 2020 Democratic field a day earlier.

Biden’s conduct during those hearings, when he was chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, became a renewed subject of controversy after the New York Times reported that Biden had called Hill earlier this month in the run-up to his presidential bid and that Hill was dissatisfied with Biden’s expression of regret.

Appearing on ABC’s “The View,” Biden largely defended his actions as a senator almost 30 years ago, saying he believed Hill’s allegations of sexual harassment levied at Thomas and tried to derail his confirmation.

Activists have long been unhappy that Hill was questioned in graphic detail by the all-white, all-male committee chaired by Biden.

“I’m sorry she was treated the way she was treated,” Biden said, but later, he asserted, “I don’t think I treated her badly. … How do you stop people from asking inflammatory questions?”

“There were a lot of mistakes made across the board and for those I apologize,” he said.

Biden praised Hill as “remarkable” and said she is “one of the reasons we have the #MeToo movement.”

Asked why he had not reached out to Hill earlier, Biden said he had previously publicly stated he had regrets about her treatment and that he “didn’t want to quote invade her space.”

That seemed to be a reference to another controversy that looms over Biden’s presidential run: allegations by several women that he made them uncomfortable by touching them at political events.

Biden also addressed that criticism, saying he was now more “cognizant” about a woman’s “private space.” But he maintained that he had been “trying to bring solace.”

He suggested he was still trying to sort out the guidelines for his conduct going forward.

“I should be able to read better,” he said. “I have to be more careful.”

Pressed by the show’s panel for an apology to his accusers, Biden would not entirely capitulate.

“So, I invaded your space,” he replied. “I mean, I’m sorry this happened. But I’m not sorry in a sense that I think I did anything that was intentionally designed to do anything wrong or be inappropriate.”

Biden, 76, served as former President Barack Obama’s vice president for two terms. He is competing with 19 others for the Democratic presidential nomination and the chance to likely face President Donald Trump next year in the general election.

His first public event as a presidential candidate is scheduled for Monday in Pittsburgh.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – Tesla Inc’s stock slumped over 4% on Friday to its lowest price in two years, rounding out a rough week that included worse-than-expected quarterly results and a pitch by Chief Executive Elon Musk on autonomous cars that failed to win over investors.

With investors betting Tesla will soon raise capital, the stock has fallen 13% for the week to its lowest level since January 2017, before the launch of the Model 3 sedan aimed at making the electric car maker profitable.

One positive development for Tesla: a U.S. District Court judge on Friday granted a request by Musk and the Securities and Exchange Commission for a second extension to resolve a dispute over Musk’s use of Twitter.

On Wednesday, Tesla posted a worse-than-expected loss of $702 million for the March quarter. Musk said Tesla would return to profit in the third quarter and that there was “some merit” to raising capital.

Musk is still battling to convince investors that demand for the Model 3, the company’s first car aimed at the mass consumer market, is “insanely” high, and that it can be delivered efficiently to customers around the world.

Tesla ended its first quarter with $2.2 billion, down from $3.7 billion in the prior quarter, and the company is planning expansions including a Shanghai factory, an upcoming Model Y SUV, and other projects.

(GRAPHIC: Tesla’s cash – https://tmsnrt.rs/2DyJjX6)

On Monday, Musk hosted a self-driving event, where he predicted Tesla would have over a million autonomous vehicles by next year. Some analysts perceived the presentation as a way to deflect attention from questions about demand, margin pressure, increasing competition and even Musk’s ongoing battle with U.S. regulators.

Tesla’s stock has now fallen 29 percent in 2019 and the company’s market capitalization has declined to $41 billion from $63 billion in mid-December.

(GRAPHIC: Tesla’s declining market cap – https://tmsnrt.rs/2Dwd62r)

Analysts now expect Tesla’s revenue to expand 19% in 2019, compared with 83% growth in 2018 and 68% growth in 2017, according to Refinitiv.

Following Tesla’s quarterly report, 12 analysts recommend selling the stock, while 11 recommend buying and eight are neutral. The median analyst price target is $275, up 16% from the stock’s current price of $236. Berenberg analyst Alexander Haissl has the most optimistic price target, at $500, while Cowen and Company’s Jeffrey Osborne has the lowest, at $160, according to Refinitiv.

Former CIA Director John Brennan pushed back Friday on President Trump’s charge that he knew about or participated in an attempt to overthrow the American government.

“I don’t think it’s surprising at all that we continue to hear the sociopathic ramblings of Mr. Trump claiming that there was this effort to try to prevent him from being elected or to unseat him,” he told MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson.

Brennan was reacting to comments Trump made during an interview with Sean Hannity on Thursday night.

Trump specifically criticized Brennan, along with former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, former FBI Director James Comey, and former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, in the fiery interview.

ROSENSTEIN SLAMS OBAMA ADMINISTRATION FOR CHOOSING ‘NOT TO PUBLICIZE FULL STORY’ OF RUSSIA HACKING

His comments followed the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s report which stopped short of accusing the president of either obstruction of justice or collusion with Russia.

Brennan added he welcomed further investigation into his and other officials’ conduct while they served in government. “I’ve testified in front of Congress … Absolutely, I’ll do it again,” he said.

Brennan also disputed Sen. Rand Paul’s, R-Ky., claim that he “insisted that the unverified and fake Steele dossier be included in the Intelligence Report.”

Journalist Bob Woodward similarly promoted the idea that the CIA pushed to include the Steele dossier in the intelligence community assessment surrounding Russian election interference.

“That’s absolutely incorrect and 180 degrees from the truth. It was CIA that was pushing not to have it included and not to be taken into account at all in that intelligence community assessment.
