Climate group’s attempt to ‘shut down’ London Heathrow airport fails after only a few handfuls of people show up

A climate activist group’s reported vow to “shut down” Europe’s busiest airport Friday turned into a flop when only a few handfuls of people showed up – and were quickly surrounded by police officers.

Videos circulating on social media showed British cops standing in a ring around activists from the Extinction Rebellion group, while cars streamed a few feet away – undeterred -- into London’s Heathrow airport. The group, which has snarled traffic and public transit in the U.K.’s capital this week through a series of blockades and protests, has been trying to force the British Parliament into accepting their climate action-related demands.

“Tomorrow we raise the bar. We are going to shut down Heathrow,” the group reportedly told its followers Thursday, according to the LBC radio station.

Yet only a small number, estimated to be less than 20 – and all of which Extinction Rebellion claims were under the age of 17 years old -- made it out to the airport Friday. Some, in a video the group streamed on Facebook, were in tears after the police arrived.

BRITISH COPS FILMED DANCING WITH CLIMATE PROTESTERS ARE BLASTED BY THEIR BOSSES FOR ‘UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR’

“I shouldn’t be here, I should be revising for my end-of-year exams,” Talia Woodin, a university student, told The Guardian newspaper. “But I have to be here. What good is a degree if there is a possibility that there is no future?”

“I’m Mia, I’m 13,” Extinction Rebellion’s website quoted another teen as saying. “I’m doing this because something has to change, I’m being told to make decisions about my future when it can’t even be guaranteed the Earth has one.”

As of late Friday afternoon at Heathrow, traffic was still flowing smoothly. It’s not clear if the protesters have anything planned for later in the evening.

But London is where they have had greater success drawing attention to their demands, which include that British Parliament “act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025,” while also pushing Parliament to “create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.”

The Metropolitan Police said as of Friday morning, 570 arrests linked to the protests have been made.

“The protesters are using tactics of lying on the ground when approached,” the police said in a statement. “This means that it takes at least four officers to remove one person to ensure their safety, which is resource intensive.”

Police officials have also decided to cancel officers’ scheduled vacation days in order to be able to have all hands on deck this Easter weekend to deal with the ongoing demonstrations.

The Metropolitan Police say “we have now asked officers on the boroughs to work 12-hour shifts; we have cancelled rest days and our Violent Crime Task Force have had their leave cancelled. This allows us to free up significant numbers of officers whilst responding to local policing.”

One person on Twitter who identified herself as a British police officer lamented the decision, while also chiding the protesters for the effects of their actions, which some have said aren’t so environmentally-friendly.

“My valuable #Easter holiday with my family, who I haven’t been able to see in a while, is now not happening because my rest days have been cancelled for the protests,” she tweeted. “To make it worse, because of the start time I have to drive to work, therefore increasing my carbon footprint.”

Money Funneled to AOC’s Boyfriend Sparks Investigation

Spread the love

A Republican advocacy group has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission arguing that Riley Roberts – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ boyfriend – illegally received $6,000 through a political action committee (PAC) allied with her congressional campaign.

The PAC is called Justice Democrats, founded by progressive commentator Cenk Uygur and Saikat Chakrabarti.

Chakrabarti now serves as AOC’s chief of staff.

Fox News’ Perry Chiaramonte has more:

Members of the Washington, D.C.-based Coolidge Reagan Foundation allege in their complaint that when the Brand New Congress PAC (BNC) — a political arm of Brand New Congress LLC, a company that was hired by Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., to run and support her campaign — paid Roberts for marketing services, it potentially ran afoul of campaign finance law.

“It’s not illegal for [Ocasio-Cortez] to pay her boyfriend, but it appears that they created some sort of scheme to avoid claiming the money [as a campaign expense],” Dan Backer, a D.C.-based attorney who filed the complaint on behalf of the foundation, told Fox News. “What exactly did he do for that money?”

It was first reported last week that the Brand New Congress PAC paid Roberts during the early days of the Ocasio-Cortez campaign. According to FEC records, the PAC made two payments to Roberts – one in August 2017 and one in September 2017 – both for $3,000.

The FEC complaint specifically cites the use of “intermediaries” to make the payments, “the vague and amorphous nature of the services Riley ostensibly provided,” the relatively small amount of money raised by the campaign at that stage and “the romantic relationship between Ocasio-Cortez and Riley” in asserting the transactions might violate campaign finance law.

US Leaders Ignoring Inflation for Political Reasons

We got more signs that the economy is slowing down this week. And yet pundits and policymakers keep insisting everything is great.

In his latest podcast, Peter Schiff says he thinks people like Donald Trump and Larry Kudlow know deep down that things aren’t that great, but they want to keep kicking the can down the road for political reasons.

US manufacturing remained flat in March after two straight months of declines. It was the first quarterly drop in production since Pres. Trump took office.  Economists had expected a slight rise in manufacturing in March.

Factory production dropped at a 1.1% annualized rate in the first quarter.

According to Reuters, “Soft manufacturing and slowing economic growth reflect the ebbing stimulus from a $1.5 trillion tax cut package and supply chain disruptions caused by Washington’s trade war with China.”

Factory employment fell in March for the first time since July 2017.

Industrial production also dropped last month, falling 0.1% and missing Wall Street expectations of a o.1% gain.

Capacity utilization was also off. It was at 79 in February. Analysts expected an improvement to 79.1. Instead, it fell to 78.8.

Peter noted that Larry Kudlow said he doesn’t expect another Federal Reserve interest rate hike in his lifetime. And of course, Trump has actually been calling for more monetary stimulus. Why? Because they know that the economy isn’t really in very good shape and the want to keep the bubble inflated so Trump can get reelected.

“How can Donald Trump be saying on the one hand that we have the greatest economy in the history of the world, on the other hand, we need the same emergency monetary policy we needed in the depths of the Great Recession? That doesn’t make sense. We have the greatest economy, but we need emergency quantitative easing. Well, the reason it makes sense is because Trump knows we don’t have a great economy; he knows we have a great bubble. He knew we had a bubble as a candidate. He criticized the Fed for doing quantitative easing — for inflating the bubble. But now that he owns the bubble, he needs the Fed to do more QE to keep it from popping before the next election.”

Peter said one thing everybody is ignoring is inflation. The conventional wisdom is that there is no inflation. But there is. Federal Reserve money printing is inflation. Just because we haven’t seen it in the government consumer price numbers doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Inflation is all around us – in the stock markets, in the bond markets, in real estate and in a lot of prices.

This is why everybody is so sanguine about interest rates.

“See, the Fed can only keep rates low so long as there’s no inflation threat. So, that’s why initially they’re saying, ‘Well, we’re OK with inflation more than 2%. We’re OK if it’s symmetrical.’ … The reason they keep lowering the bar is because they can’t do anything about it. They have to keep pretending that inflation is not a threat because if they ever admit it’s a threat, what are they going to do? Nothing! They can’t raise interest rates. That is the problem. The reason they had to stop raising interest rates, the reason Larry Kudlow is so confident that we’re never going to have another rate hike, is because he knows the whole economy would implode.”

Simply put, if the Fed brought rates back to 4, 5, or 6% — where they historically have been — the entire house of cards would collapse.

Peter said the Fed will eventually have to raise rates because inflation will spiral out of control in the midst of a recession.

That’s stagflation.

“The Fed is going to have to raise rates to protect the dollar, to prevent high inflation from becoming runaway or hyperinflation. That is the choice the Fed is going to have to make.”

Of course, raising rates and allowing the bubble to deflate will be extremely painful.

“Every time they make the problems bigger by kicking the can down the road, there’s more political motivation to kick it again. Because the worse the problems are, the more painful is the resolution and of course, nobody wants to be blamed. Nobody wants to be the messenger that gets shot full of holes because they deliver the bad news.”

In this podcast, Peter also talks about income taxes and explains why the entire system is unconstitutional.

Gerald Celente hosts and gives his expert analysis on the current trends in the economy as well as actions Trump is taking to keep the economy strong and win 2020.

Exclusive: Markets underpricing ‘no-deal’ Brexit risk, ECB’s Draghi told EU leaders

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Financial markets are not fully pricing in the risk of Britain’s exit from the European Union without a deal, European Central Bank head Mario Draghi told EU leaders last week, according to accounts of several senior officials in the bloc.

The officials reported Draghi as telling EU leaders last week that the ECB, the Bank of England and the European Commission had made all the necessary preparations for the “no-deal” scenario, expected to be highly disruptive.

But Draghi also said that private sector preparations were still incomplete and stressed that markets were underpricing the risks.

“He said that markets are underpricing the no-deal risk,” one euro zone official said.

Elizabeth Warren on Wells Fargo CEO’s resignation: ‘About damn time’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., tweeted her pleasure in reaction to the news that Wells Fargo CEO Tim Sloan will step down from his position Thursday after a 31-year career with the financial institution.

“About damn time. Tim Sloan should have been fired a long time ago. He enabled Wells Fargo's massive fake accounts scam, got rich off it, & then helped cover it up. Now—let's make sure all the people hurt by Wells Fargo's scams get the relief they're owed,” posted Warren, who has long crusaded against shady practices from Wall Street and big banks.

The 2020 presidential candidate has been among the most ardent critics of Sloan, 58, and Wells Fargo, which has been besieged by scandals in recent years. He will retire from the lender on June 30 and will be replaced by the firm’s general counsel Allen Parker on an interim basis, Bloomberg reported.

“It has become apparent that the focus on me has become a distraction that impacts our ability to successfully move Wells Fargo forward,” Sloan said on a conference call after the announcement.

WELLS FARGO PLANS TO SLASH HEADCOUNT IN THE NEXT 3 YEARS

Sloan had faced calls for his resignation since taking the helm of the fourth-largest bank in the U.S. in 2016, with the mandate of cleaning it after his predecessor was forced out. Critics, including Warren and other Democrats, didn't feel Sloan was up to the task after a series of high-profile scandals that included employees illegally opening fictitious accounts in customers' names to meet aggressive sales goals and overcharging customers for mortgages and auto loans.

Both scandals resulted in Wells Fargo paying penalties totaling billions.

In a series of tweets Thursday, Warren called for an investigation into the CEO for his role in Wells Fargo's crimes.

WELLS FARGO TO PAY $2.1 BILLION FOR ROLE IN HOUSING BUBBLE

"By the way, getting fired shouldn't be the end of the story for Tim Sloan. He shouldn't get a golden parachute. He should be investigated by the SEC and the DOJ for his role in all the Wells Fargo scams. And if he's guilty of any crimes, he should be put in jail like anyone else," she posted.

At a contentious House Financial Services Committee hearing earlier this month, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused Wells Fargo of "financing the caging of children" and suggested it should bear the costs for oil spills and climate change.

During the same hearing, Sloan tried to assuage concerns from lawmakers that he was not acting quickly enough to address the lender's long list of scandals.

“With all of this experience and the length of time that you have been there, the roles that you have played, you have not been able to keep Wells Fargo out of trouble, you keep getting fined,” panel Chairwoman Maxine Waters, D-Calif., said. “Why should Wells Fargo continue to be the size that it is?”

News of Sloan’s departure was met with cheer from Democrats.

“Tim Sloan needed to go, and he should not take a huge payout with him. But Wells Fargo’s mismanagement is about more than one CEO – this bank needs a complete culture shift,” Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio tweeted Thursday.

“Thank u, next,” tweeted California Rep. Katie Porter.

Some Republicans were just as happy to see Sloan go.

“The bottom line is that we’ve not seen the type of cultural or institutional change so desperately needed at Wells Fargo,” said Patrick McHenry, the top Republican sitting on the House Financial Services Committee.

Sloan will retire with a standard retirement package and has stock options estimated at about $24.5 million.

Germany seeks to deter future militants by voiding nationality

By Paul Carrel

BERLIN (Reuters) – Germans with a second nationality who fight abroad for groups like Islamic State will lose their citizenship, the cabinet agreed in a draft law on Wednesday intended to deter future militants.

Like other Western countries, Germany faces a conundrum of how to deal with citizens who travel to the Middle East to join violent Islamist causes like IS whose self-proclaimed “caliphate” was eliminated last month.

The measure, which needs parliamentary approval, would exclude minors, cover only future cases, and not apply to single nationality Germans who could otherwise be left stateless.

“This will send a signal to IS supporters, to those thinking of traveling to IS areas,” government spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters.

More than 1,000 Germans have left their country for Middle East war zones since 2013 and the government has been debating how to deal with them as U.S.-backed forces took IS’s last patch of territory in Syria and rounded up prisoners.

About a third have returned to Germany, another third are believed to have died, and the rest are thought to be still in Iraq and Syria, including those detained by Iraqi forces and U.S.-backed fighters in Syria, according to German intelligence officials.

In February, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Britain, France and Germany to take back more than 800 captured Islamic State fighters and put them on trial.

Germany said it would take back fighters only if the suspects have consular access, adding that in principle, all of its citizens and those suspected of having fought for IS have the right to return.

In one high-profile case, Britain in February revoked the citizenship of a teenager who had left London aged 15 to join IS in Syria. The case of Shamima Begum highlighted the security, legal and ethical dilemmas facing European governments dealing with those who swore allegiance to a group determined to destroy the West.

Germany joined the military campaign against IS militants in Syria in a support role by deploying Tornado reconnaissance jets, refuelling aircraft and a frigate to the region, after an appeal from close partner France for Berlin to do more.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday said his government must make men aware of the dangers of poor hygiene after expressing dismay over the 1,000 penis amputations that apparently occur in his country each year.

“In Brazil, we have 1,000 penis amputations a year due to a lack of water and soap,” he said while speaking to reporters in Brasilia after visiting the Education Ministry. “We have to find a way to get out of the bottom of this hole.”

The far-right leader called the figure “ridiculous and sad,” Reuters reported. A spokeswoman for the Brazilian urology society told the news agency the number is based on its official data for penis amputations.

The amputations were conducted out of necessity over untreated infections, along with complications from HIV and various cancers, she said.

A top Russian diplomat says Russia is willing to negotiate a new nuclear weapons treaty with the United States and China.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters on Friday Moscow is closely following reports in the United States that the U.S. would like to reach a nuclear weapons deal with both Russia and China, and is “willing” to negotiate. The story was reported by CNN earlier Friday.

Ryabkov also said that Russia “would like to convince” the U.S. to adopt a joint statement that would condemn any use of nuclear weapons.

Ryabkov’s comments come just months after the U.S. withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, a cornerstone of the post-Cold War security, and Russia followed suit. Each claims breaches by the other.

Government dysfunction and an intelligence failure that preceded the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka are traced to simmering divisions between the president and prime minister after a weekslong political crisis that crippled the country last year.

The government has admitted to a “lapse of intelligence” after officials failed to act upon near-specific information received from foreign agencies. Suicide bombers exploded themselves last Sunday in three churches and three luxury hotels, killing 253 people and wounding 400 more. Authorities said eight Muslim militants blew themselves up at their targets while the wife of one of the attackers blasted herself on being rounded up by police.

The carnage has brought forth arguments that worshippers and holidaymakers fell victim to the rivalry and a lack of communication between the country’s two leaders — President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Cabinet led by Wickremesinghe says neither he nor his ministers were informed of the intelligence received by the defense authorities. Sirisena is the head of state, defense minister, minister in charge of the police and head of the armed forces. He also chairs the National Security Council, which includes the heads of security agencies and departments. Traditionally the prime minister also plays an important role on the council.

According to Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne, Sirisena has not included Wickremesinghe in national security affairs since a dispute between them came into the open in October last year. This is an unusual departure from the protocol, he said.

Senaratne said that Sirisena was overseas when the attacks took place and even after that, the National Security Council refused to meet with Wickremesinghe as he tried to give them instructions.

Sirisena has also said that he was not informed of the intelligence received and vowed to overhaul the leadership of the defense forces.

The top bureaucrat at the Defense Ministry, Hemasiri Fernando, has resigned at Sirisena’s insistence.

“It is a major factor,” said Jehan Perera, the head of local activist group National Peace Council, referring to the alleged lack of coordination between the leaders contributing to the failure to prevent the attacks.

“The primary responsibility has to be taken by the president, he did not give the information and he did not act,” Perera said. “He had the Ministry of Defense, took the police from the prime minister, chaired the National Security Council meetings and did nothing,” Perera said.

Kusal Perera, a journalist and political commentator, says security and intelligence officials should have acted on the information whether or not they received orders from politicians.

“If they (Wickremesinghe and his party) were not invited to the National Security Council, why did not they say in Parliament that they were not responsible for the security of the country any longer,” said Perera, who is not related to Jehan Perera.

“Saying that now is taking political advantage, not taking responsibility,” he said.

Sirisena and Wickremesinghe belong to different political parties but came together for Sirisena’s presidential campaign in 2015. Their relationships broke down and their differences exploded last year when Sirisena suddenly sacked Wickremesinghe as prime minister and appointed in his place former strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa, whom he defeated in the presidential election. The crisis crippled the country for more than seven weeks to the point of not being able to pass this year’s national budget on time.

A court decision compelled Sirisena to reappoint Wickremesinghe, but the two leaders have been rivals within the same government.

Rajapaksa, who is the minority leader in Parliament, blames the government for weakening intelligence and dropping its guard, which he had maintained to defeat the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels 10 years ago to end the 26-year-old civil war. He also criticized the government for the detention of intelligence officers accused of extrajudicial killings and abductions during the closing days of the war, which he said crippled the security apparatus before the bombings. According to conservative U.N estimates, some 100,000 people were killed in Sri Lanka’s conflict.

Sirisena summoned an all-party conference Thursday to which Wickremesinghe was also invited. At the conference, Sirisena stressed “setting aside all the political beliefs and difference (so that) everybody should collectively commit towards building a peaceful environment within the country,” a statement from his office said.

“It is not a secret that the disagreements between me and the government aggravated over the past two years,” Sirisena told the country’s media executives Friday. “One of the reasons for that is weakening of military intelligence and arresting military officials unnecessarily and my speaking up against it within and outside the government.”

Jehan Perera said that the security threat could prove politically advantageous to Rajapaksa and his family, with a presidential election scheduled at the end of this year. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, a younger brother of Mahinda, was the powerful defense secretary during his brother’s reign and has expressed his interest to join the contest.

“People are saying we want a stronger leader and they are talking about Gotabhaya. It (the blasts) has worked to their benefit,” Perera said.

Cyprus police are intensifying a search for the remains of more victims at locations where an army officer, who authorities say admitted to killing five women and two girls, allegedly had dumped their bodies.

Police said Friday’s search will concentrate on a military firing range, a reservoir and a man-made lake near an abandoned mine approximately 32 kilometers (20 miles) west of the capital Nicosia.

On Thursday, the 35-year-old suspect told investigators that he had killed four more people than he had previously admitted to. All the suspect’s alleged victims are foreign nationals.

Police have already found the bodies of a 38-year-old Filipino woman and two as yet unidentified women.

Search crews are now looking for the daughter of the 38-year-old, a Romanian mother and daughter and another Filipino woman.

Flores ended her seven-year relationship with Rocha just two months before her death and still lived in fear of him until that point, a sister of the victim, Bernice Flores, told the Daily Bulletin.

“He said himself so many times to other people, ‘If I can’t have her, no one will.’ ” Flores said, adding that her sister stayed in the relationship longer that she would have liked in fear that Rocha would hurt her or her family if they broke up.

Rocha was convicted on misdemeanor battery in 2016 and sentenced to 60 days in prison. He was originally charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, but the charges were lowered in a plea deal, the Daily Bulletin reported.
