Michigan parents claim nanny cam captured ghost that left scratches on baby

A Michigan couple is worried their home may be haunted after they claimed they saw a ghost in their daughter’s room that allegedly left scratches on her face.

Heather Brough, 30, and Joshua Higgins, 25, told WXYZ they think a ghost is lurking around their Highland, Mich., house after they saw a figure move across the screen on their nanny cam. In the video captured a few weeks ago, a figure appears to in front of their young daughter Lily’s crib.

"It was chilling," Higgins said. "It was literally a chill down your spine, like that 'what if' factor – Is this what I just saw?"

Higgins told the media outlet when he saw the figure on the nanny cam he immediately “ran upstairs and grabbed” his daughter.

Brough said her daughter had mysterious scratches on her face and believed the ghost may have harmed her.

"It scares us that it could do something else," Brough said. "I mean, there was a morning I woke up and I felt like someone’s hands were around my neck."

Paranormal investigators inspected the home but Higgins’ father offered an explanation.

"The gentleman that lived here originally committed suicide apparently by jumping out this window, which is one story down," Jim Higgins told WXYZ.

The couple said they are hoping to save up enough money so they can move out of the home, which is owned by Higgins’ mother.

ZURICH (Reuters) – Proxy adviser Ethos Foundation on Friday recommended UBS shareholders reject all of the Swiss bank’s executive and board pay proposals at its upcoming annual general meeting, including binding votes on 2018 bonuses and 2019 pay packages.

“Ethos considers the amount of 73.3 million Swiss francs ($73.18 million), proposed as the 2018 bonus of the 13 executive board members, to be inappropriate given the bank’s negative stock price performance in 2018,” it said in a statement.

On Tuesday, another proxy adviser, Glass Lewis, also said the bank’s shareholders should oppose its 2018 compensation report.

British ISIS Bride admits she was ‘brainwashed’ into believing ISIS, hopes for second chance

British ISIS bride Shamima Begum admitted that she’s unlikely to come back to Britain after the government revoked her citizenship, but insisted that the terror group “brainwashed” her.

The 19-year-old, who fled her life in London for the Islamic State in her teens, has been stuck in a refugee camp for months now, attracting international attention amid her pregnancy and vocal plans to return to her home country.

Since the media scrutiny, Begum’s British citizenship was revoked by the government for supporting terrorism, while her third baby died last month. Her previous two children died during her life in the so-called caliphate while she was married to Dutch ISIS militant Yago Riedijk.

But Begum now says that she traveled to Syria to join ISIS in 2015 because she believed “everything that I had been told, while knowing little about the truths of my religion".

“I have sat down and thought about how long I would have to stay here. And I have kind of accepted that I will have to stay here, I will have to make this like a second home,” she told the London Times.

She said that since leaving Baghouz, a previously ISIS-held territory that was liberated earlier this year, she came to regret decisions she made and hoped the government may take a second look at her case.

“Since I left Baghouz I really regretted everything I did, and I feel like I want to go back to the UK for a second chance to start my life over again. I was brainwashed,” she said.

Begum was subject to criticism following multiple interviews with media outlets in which she didn’t express remorse for joining the terrorist group. She even went on to suggest that a 2017 terror attack in the UK was justified due to British military participation in the war against ISIS.

She explained to the Times that the reason she made the offensive comments was because of pressure and fear of revenge from the jihadists in the refugee camp.

Japan’s banks can’t blame BOJ for their problems, new head of lobby says

By Junko Fujita and Taro Fuse

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japanese lenders should not blame the Bank of Japan’s ultra-loose monetary policy for their inability to boost trading revenue or for poor returns borne of lax risk management, the newly appointed head of the country’s banking lobby said.

Makoto Takashima said banks should instead be responsible for their own risk appetite and investment strategy, wading into a long-brewing debate about the impact of ultra-low interest rates on commercial lenders.

Japanese banks have complained about the central bank’s ultra-loose policy, which they say has diminished returns from traditional lending and hurt their bottom line. Banks, particularly smaller, regional lenders, have also been squeezed by a declining population.

“I don’t think it’s quite right for banks to blame monetary policy for their changing risk appetite, or poor investment performance as a result of loosening their risk control,” Takashima said in an interview with Reuters.

“Each bank should be responsible for their risk appetite to respond to their customer needs and boost revenue,” he said.

Takashima also heads the main unit of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc, Japan’s third-largest lender by assets. He takes over as chairman of the Japanese Bankers Association from Monday.

His comments appear to be something of a departure from those of his predecessor, Koji Fujiwara, who had urged the BOJ to review its 2 percent inflation target and ultra-loose monetary policy – in what had been some of the strongest comments to date from the banking lobby.

Separately, Isao Kubota, the chairman of Nishi-Nippon City Bank in southern Japan recently told Reuters that the central bank’s stimulus program is hurting profits so badly that even mergers among regional banks could not be a solution.

Although Takashima said he agreed with much of his predecessor’s comments, he stressed that banks themselves were responsible to execute their businesses under the central bank’s monetary policy.

Still, the industry faces some headwinds: the ultra-loose monetary policy is expected to continue, while banks are under pressure to restructure their retail businesses as the population continues to shrink and as more customers change how they conduct financial transactions.

Mizuho Financial Group, Japan’s second-largest bank by assets, last month slashed its full-year profit outlook by 86 percent, citing costs to close retail branches at home and restructuring of its securities portfolio of foreign bonds.

Fires at Missouri city hall, police station, ex-mayor’s home have some suspecting cover-up, others hate crime

Shortly after Tyus Byrd ended her tenure as mayor and swore in a new leader for Parma, Missouri -- the politician who had bested Byrd in the election --  fires broke out at Byrd's home, the city's police station and city hall.

Police have called the fire in the former mayor’s home suspicious, and say the blaze at Parma City Hall was caused by arson.

The fires caused considerable damage. Byrd’s home was completely destroyed, and the main computer and many official records at Parma City Hall have been ruined, officials said.

Adding further intrigue is an announcement by state auditors about an investigation into the handling of finances -- while Byrd was mayor.

Several government agencies at the local, county and state levels are offering rewards for information leading to a conviction, KFVS12.com reported.

But in the absence of a clear suspect, there are predominantly two theories swirling about the multiple blazes, according to The New York Times. One possibility is that the fires may have been set to destroy evidence. Others, however, believe the blazes targeted Byrd, who was the city's first black mayor.

“There are tons of theories,” New Madrid County Deputy Sheriff Chris Hensley told the New York Times. “Whenever we go to the local store to get water or sodas, people are steadily talking about this and trying to help us with it.”

MICHIGAN MOTHER ORDERED TO STAND TRIAL AFTER FIRE KILLS KIDS

The new mayor, Rufus Williamson Jr., is trying to stay clear of the speculation, but the fires have undeniably affected the nascent administration, which has to get up and running without the assistance of some crucial town records.

“I hear a lot of rumors, a lot of this and that,” he told the Times. “But I don’t really have anything to tell you I can put my foot on.”

The investigation into the city’s finances during Byrd's time in office arose from a whistle-blower tip the state auditor received about questionable practices in payroll and the management of municipal assets, among other things.

The state started the investigation in January and found the tip to be credible, the Times reported, leading the agency to take a deeper look.

Those who believe Byrd, because of her race, is not a suspect but a victim of the near-simultaneous fires note the resignations of several Parma employees -- including four of the city’s six police officers – just before Byrd was sworn in as mayor in 2015. Byrd, a former city clerk, took office after defeating Randall Ramsey, who had held the job for 37 years.

Since the employees who quit were all white, and their resignations happened amid the backdrop of protests and racial tensions in Ferguson, Missouri following the police shooting of Michael Brown, an African-American teenager, the exodus was viewed by some as being racially motivated.

But, the New York Times noted, others attributed it to differences between the former mayoral administration and Byrd’s incoming one.

A Parma city official, Alderman Allen Hampton, told the Times the Internal Revenue Service said the city was thousands of dollars in arrears. Businesses accused the former administration of not paying money owed to them.

Hampton, for one, believes the fires were an attempt at a cover-up.

“It was definitely arson,” he said. “And it was, everyone would assume, to cover up and burn evidence."

Meanwhile, Byrd’s husband, Adrian, is convinced the fire at their home was a hate crime.

But Hensley, the deputy sheriff, said there is no evidence pointing authorities to such a conclusion.

Byrd’s father, Simon Wofford, who is a city alderman, denied any attempt to destroy financial records.

“When my daughter came in the office, she made some changes to make things better,” Wofford said.

Syndergaard expresses frustration with Mets’ decisions

March 24, 2019

Pitcher Noah Syndergaard fired a shot at the New York Mets front office Sunday, expressing frustration that teammate Jacob deGrom hasn’t been signed to a contract extension and that the team has an unconventional travel schedule prior to Opening Day.

The Mets and deGrom, who won the 2018 National League Cy Young Award, talked in the offseason, but deGrom told reporters Saturday he wasn’t confident of an agreement in the next few days.

The Mets and deGrom agreed to a one-year, $17 million contract rather than go to arbitration in January. He is eligible to become a free agent in 2021, and Syndergaard said he doesn’t want it to reach that point.

“Jake’s the best pitcher in baseball right now. I think he deserves whatever amount he’s worth. I want to keep him happy, so when it does come time for him to reach free agency, he stays on our side pitching for the Mets. I just think they should quit all this fuss and pay the man already,” Syndergaard told reporters.

This weekend, the Boston Red Sox and ace Chris Sale agreed to a five-year, $145 million extension, and the Houston Astros reached a two-year, $66 million deal with former Cy Young winner Justin Verlander.

“If there wasn’t a trend of other guys getting contract extensions, I don’t know what the circumstance would be. But you can see Chris Sale, Verlander, those guys getting extensions. I think it’s time Jacob gets one, too,” Syndergaard said.

The right-hander also said he didn’t understand the reasoning behind the Mets not returning to the Big Apple before their season opener Thursday. Instead, the team will leave Sarasota, Fla., and travel to Syracuse, N.Y., before heading to Washington, D.C., for the opener with the Nationals.

“I don’t know whose idea that was, but it’s not a smart one,” Syndergaard said. “I don’t think that’s conducive for winning ballgames, really — that much travel. I mean, I’m sure the amenities in Syracuse aren’t the best for a Major League Baseball team to go up there and have one last workout before the regular season starts, but those kinds of decisions are above my pay grade.”

Deutsche-Commerzbank merger talk brightens mood for European stocks

March 18, 2019

(Reuters) – European stocks extended a recent run of gains on Monday, helped by a jump in shares in German lenders Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank after they confirmed over the weekend they were in talks to merge.

Deutsche Bank’s shares rose 3.4 percent and Commerzbank’s shares jumped 5.4 percent, lifting Europe’s banking sector by 0.6 percent.

The banks issued short statements following separate meetings of their management boards, indicating a quickening of pace in the merger process, although both also warned that a deal was far from certain.

They topped the gainers on the pan-European STOXX 600 index, which gained 0.14 percent at 0823 GMT, surpassing a five-month closing high it hit on Friday on the back of hopes of a less chaotic Brexit and progress in U.S.-China trade talks.

London’s FTSE 100 outperformed its euro-peers with a 0.3 percent gain at the start of a week that is expected to see parliament voting for a third time on Prime Minister’s Theresa May’s Brexit plan after ruling out a near-term no-deal exit.

Among other individual movers, Germany’s automotive cable and wiring system specialist Leoni sank almost 20 percent to its lowest in nearly nine years after the company abandoned a 2019 profit target it issued just last month, unveiled job cuts as well as possible divestments and said its finance chief would quit.

Boeing’s Frankfurt-listed shares dropped 2 percent after the Seattle Times reported the plane maker’s safety analysis of a new flight control system on MAX jets, one of those that crashed last week in Ethiopia.

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – The grounding of India’s Jet Airways is turning into a quick windfall and long-term opportunity for international airlines keen to scoop up nearly a million outbound passengers from what was once the nation’s biggest airline.

Jet, which previously had a fleet of around 120 largely Boeing Co planes, was forced to indefinitely halt all flight operations on April 17 after its banks rejected the carrier’s plea for emergency funds.

The carrier’s descent into crisis has benefited international airlines in the form of rising fares and demand, data showed.

Fares from India to cities such as Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Bali in the first quarter of 2019 rose between 4 percent and 32 percent from a year ago, according to Indian travel portal MakeMyTrip Ltd.

In the peak travel months of May and June, fares to London have spiked as much as 36 percent and tickets to San Francisco are up nearly 20 percent from a year ago, according to data from travel portal Yatra.com.

“For the next three months it’s actually bonanza time for international players,” said Ashish Nainan, a research analyst at CARE Ratings. “At least until the middle of June, the fares are not going to come down.”

Due to rising demand, even before Jet’s lessors grounded planes, carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines Ltd and United Airlines saw an up to a 27 percent increase in passenger numbers from India in the last quarter of 2018, data from India’s aviation regulator showed. That is the latest period for which the data is available.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, clocking 15-20 percent domestic growth in recent years. It has long had only two full-service long-haul carriers, state-run Air India and Jet.

Jet is now hoping to be bailed out by a new investor, with final bids due on May 10.

INCREASING CAPACITY

Before its grounding, Jet had the biggest share of India’s outbound international air traffic, carrying 12 percent of the 7.8 million passengers headed overseas in the Oct-Dec quarter, down from 14 percent a year earlier, data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.

For an interactive graphic on Jet’s market share, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2WvDQYi

For an interactive graphic on average daily flights by the airline, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2FeFDel

The total number of passengers traveling overseas with Jet fell 10 percent during the last quarter of 2018 even as the outbound travel market grew about 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines posted a 27 percent increase in passengers from India, Cathay registered 17 percent growth and British Airways saw a 10 percent rise in the same period.

Cathay said the events at Jet combined with increasing demand for travel had led it to deploy larger aircraft with more seats on some Indian routes.

“In the long term we would certainly like to be able to offer more capacity into India, not just on our existing routes but by establishing new services to secondary cities,” Cathay said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines, in an email to Reuters, said the Indian market is “very promising” but declined to give details of airfare levels or demand patterns in the wake of Jet’s exit, citing a quiet period before the release of its annual results.

DOMESTIC GAINS

Jet’s grounding has also had a big impact on the domestic market, with inter-city air fares to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata soaring more than 20 percent in May and June, according to Yatra.com.

The spike in fares is expected to underpin strong earnings for IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd, which are set to report results for the quarter ended March 31 in the coming weeks.

“Domestic Indian carriers are the main benefactors, but I suspect if Jet fails to be revived by May 10 then Vistara and other airlines that ply international routes, particularly the lucrative Gulf market, are the main winners,” said Shukor Yusof, the head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics. Vistara is a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

Inadequate bilateral traffic rights between India and other countries, however, could be an impediment to foreign carriers’ hopes of winning business lost by Jet, some analysts said.

“Even before Jet’s operational shutdown, international capacity was significantly constrained,” said Kapil Kaul, CEO for South Asia of consultancy CAPA. “We have now more serious capacity challenge … this is unlikely to be stabilized in the near term.”

A new national government likely to be in place sometime after elections end in May is expected to address the international capacity constraints, and once bilateral agreements are eased airlines including Emirates, Turkish and Qatar would immediately benefit, said Kaul.

“We would love to add more flights but we are at the limit of the allocation granted to us for traffic rights,” Emirates Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori told reporters in Dubai on Wednesday.

(Reuters) – AstraZeneca Plc beat first-quarter sales and earnings expectations on Friday as the British drugmaker benefited from a push into cancer drugs and emerging markets including China.

Newer treatments such as lung cancer drug Tagrisso, now the company’s top selling medicine, have helped the drugmaker’s return to growth after years of crumbling sales due to patent losses on older drugs.

Sales in China have shown explosive growth, more than doubling since 2012, but AstraZeneca executives on Friday said that may not be sustained.

“The enormous growth you currently see in China, 28 percent, probably is not sustainable, but we feel very bullish that the growth will continue to be at a pace of between 15 percent and 20 percent,” Ruud Dobber, executive vice president, BioPharma, told Reuters.

Shares of the company were down 0.2 percent at 5,878 pence at 1031 GMT.

The turnaround in AstraZeneca’s fortunes has been powered by a push into cancer treatments led by Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, who saw off a 2014 takeover bid from Pfizer in part by promising annual sales of $45 billion by 2023.

In the first quarter, sales from its oncology unit rose 59 percent to $1.89 billion, accounting for 35 percent of total product sales.

The company has moved deeper into cancer therapy market through wide-ranging deals, including those for immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Last month, it agreed a multi-billion dollar oncology deal with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd.

“We’re reaching that point where after years of having to keep faith, we have actually got something tangible to believe in,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett said.

AstraZeneca also backed its annual sales and earnings forecast and said it has extensively prepared for UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union, even in the event of a no-deal exit.

The company has already spent more than 40 million pounds ($52 million) on Brexit preparations, including stockpiling six weeks’ worth of drugs in the UK and four weeks in continental Europe to guard against shortages.

AstraZeneca said product sales rose 14 percent at constant currency to $5.47 billion in the quarter, led by its lung cancer drug Tagrisso and respiratory treatment Pulmicort.

China sales increased by 28 percent to $1.24 billion in the quarter, accounting for nearly a quarter of overall product sales.

Core earnings came in at 89 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts on average were expecting core earnings of 85 cents per share and product sales of $5.29 billion, according to a company provided consensus of 19 analysts.

It’s the type of crime that doesn’t happen every day.

Police in the suburbs of Philadelphia say three suspects broke into a medical facility in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, last Saturday and fled with 18 colonoscopies – devices used for examining the health of patients’ colons.

The devices were reportedly worth a total of about $450,000, authorities said.

But police were perplexed about what the suspects might have planned to do with the instruments.

“This is not something that a typical pawn shop might accept,” Lower Merion Police Detective Sergeant Michael Vice told Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV. “My feeling would be that it was some type of black market sales.”

Such a market apparently does exist, Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath told Philly.com.

“They appeared to know precisely where to go, and they pried the door open,” McGrath said of the suspects, who were captured on surveillance video leaving the facility, carrying bulging backpacks.

Police are hoping the suspects will be caught in the end.
