Minnesota mom allegedly kills 2 children, then herself: investigators

A mother in Minnesota allegedly killed her two children before fatally shooting herself, officials said on Monday.

Emma LaRoque, 28, and her two children were found dead in a home in Ogema, a rural city roughly 60 miles northeast of Fargo, N.D., after authorities received a report about a "possible incident," the Becker County Medical Examiner's Office said in a news release.

ELDERLY ILLINOIS COUPLE DEAD IN SUSPECTED MURDER, POLICE SAY

LaRoque's death was ruled a suicide, while her children — Shane Woods, 9, and Frederick York, 4, — both "died of homicidal violence," according to the office.

LaRoque's father, Mike, is the director of public safety for the White Earth Nation tribe, according to the Star Tribune.

A neighbor told the news outlet she saw the mother and her two children at a tribal meeting a couple of weeks ago.

Missing boy’s grandmother hopes hoax will generate new leads

The grandmother of a boy who went missing in 2011 from Illinois said she believes her grandson is still alive and hopes publicity surrounding a hoax perpetrated by an Ohio man claiming to be the 14-year-old boy will generate new leads in the authorities search for him.

Linda Pitzen, 71, told The Wooster Daily Record she tried to manage her expectations when she heard Wednesday that Timmothy Pitzen, missing since age 6, might be the teenager who told police he was Timmothy. She said she found it frightening to wonder whether Timmothy would remember his name after "supposedly being kept captive" for so long.

"You don't want to get your hopes up, but yet you are hoping that it could be him," Linda Pitzen said.

The teen was in fact 23-year-old Brian Rini , of Medina, Ohio, a convicted felon released from prison in March after serving a sentence for burglary and vandalism. Rini has been charged with make false statements to authorities in federal court in Cincinnati.

Timmothy vanished after his mother, Amy Fry-Pitzen, pulled him out of kindergarten in Aurora, Illinois, nearly eight years ago, took him on a two-day road trip to the zoo and a water park, and then killed herself at a hotel. She left a note saying that her son was safe with people who would love and care for him, and added: "You will never find him."

Rini was found wandering the streets Wednesday in northern Kentucky and told authorities he had just escaped his captors after years of abuse, officials said. He claimed he had been forced to have sex with men, according to the FBI.

When confronted with DNA results proving he wasn't Timmothy, Rini acknowledged his identity, saying he had watched a story about the missing boy on ABC's "20/20" and wanted to get away from his own family, the FBI said.

"I just hope this young man who claimed to be Tim realizes how much hurt he caused," Linda Pitzen said. "And now everybody is hurting. And I just don't understand how somebody could be so sick to do this."

She said she hoped Rini would get mental health treatment so that he would never hurt a family like this again.

A court docket shows a Medina Municipal Court judge in 2013 ordered Rini to be "compliant" in taking his psychiatric medication. In 2017, Rini was treated at an Ohio center for people with mental health or substance abuse problems, according to court documents.

Rini's brother, 21-year-old Jonathan Rini, told The Associated Press on Saturday that his family struggled while growing up. He said it has been four years since he has spoken to his brother.

"I wasn't surprised he did something stupid," Jonathan Rini said. "I was just surprised he stooped that low for attention."

Jonathan Rini said that while he has no compassion for his brother, he has "deep sorrows" for Timmothy's family.

"It's too much for them," he said. "They shouldn't have to go through this. "No one in the world should have to go through this."

Swedish TV says Swedbank linked to Baltic money laundering scandal

February 20, 2019

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) – Swedish television (SVT) said on Wednesday it had uncovered documents linking Swedbank to a money laundering scandal involving Denmark’s Danske Bank.

At least 40 billion Swedish crowns ($4.30 billion) had been transferred between accounts at Swedbank and Danske in the Baltics between 2007 and 2015, SVT’s Uppdrag Granskning investigative program reported.

The program said that transactions by 50 clients should have raised red flags at Swedbank as they were companies with no visible operations, had unknown beneficial owners or were represented by so-called “goalkeepers” – people who only provide a front for an organization.

“The investigation covers more than 1,000 of Swedbank’s clients in high-risk countries who are known from the money laundering scandal in Danske Bank,” SVT said on its website.

In a statement, Swedbank spokesman Gabriel Francke Rodau said that fighting money laundering was one of Swedbank’s top priorities.

“We are comfortable with the systems and processes we have to prevent and avert money laundering. When we get signals, we act,” he said.

Swedbank said it could not comment on all the details in the program as a result of bank secrecy laws.

Danske is under investigation in Denmark, Estonia, Britain and the United States over some 200 billion euros ($226 billion) in payments from Russia, ex-Soviet states and elsewhere that were found to have flowed through its Estonian arm.

Taiwan leader tours Pacific allies, with Hawaii stopover

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen is visiting her island's diplomatic allies in the Pacific on a tour that will end with a stopover in Hawaii.

Taiwan's official Central News Agency says Tsai will travel Thursday to March 28 to visit Palau, Nauru and the Marshall Islands. She will transit through Hawaii on her way back.

Taiwan's list of allies has dwindled as countries choose instead to establish relations with Beijing, which considers the self-governing island part of Chinese territory.

Only 17 mainly small, developing countries still recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation. The island split from mainland China amid a civil war in 1949.

Beijing has recently ratcheted up its rhetoric around "re-unifying" Taiwan, which has a democratic government, with the Communist Party-ruled mainland.

San Francisco suburb says ‘Yabba Dabba Don’t’ to Flintstones house, owner fighting back

It's a page right out of history.

The grounds of an unusual home in an elusive San Francisco suburb that pays homage to the "The Flintstones" family -- complete with dinosaurs and a life-sized Fred Flintstone -- has ended up in the middle of a legal fight between town officials and a property owner.

The house in Hillsborough that's visible from Interstate 280 has featured the new addition of several dinosaurs to the garden, in addition to other sculptures that has drawn the ire of city officials due to the owner not getting required permits for the work.

Local politics. Meet local politics.

"We don't like it when people build things first, and then come in and demand or ask for permission later," Assistant City Attorney Mark Hudak told KTVU last month. "That's not fair to everyone else who goes through the process."

TOWN CALLS 'FLINTSTONE HOUSE' A PUBLIC NUISANCE, SUES OWNER

The 2,730-square-foot house --- currently painted red and purple with a giant "Yabba Dabba Do" sign near the driveway -- was built in 1976. It was purchased by Florence Fang, a prominent philanthropist who once published the San Francisco Examiner, in June 2017 for $2.8 million.

Fang is not the "Wilma" of a modern stone-age family, however.

Fang, who doesn't live in the home, instead uses it for entertainment purposes and charitable events.

The San Francisco Bay Area suburb of Hillsborough is suing the owner of the so-called Flintstone House, saying that she installed dangerous steps, dinosaurs and other Flintstone-era figurines without necessary permits.

City officials said that Fang was given three stop work notices, a code violation citation, and then a hearing in front of an administrative panel made up of neighbors before a lawsuit was ultimately filed in March over unpermitted garden installations.

"If the lawsuit is successful, the judge will order her to remove the statues and the mushrooms and the Yabba Dabba Do sign," Hudak told KTVU. "There are some other safety code violations that she needs to correct and the judge would order that as well."

But an attorney for the 84-year-old told the Associated Press that snobby officials are after Fang's constitutional right to enjoy her yard.

"Mrs. Fang has made people smile, she's giving them joy. What's not to love about Dino, who acts like a dog?" Angela Alioto, a former San Francisco supervisor, told the AP. "What is wrong with these people?"

While inviting reporters on a tour of the home this week, Alioto told the San Mateo Daily Journal the home is Fang's "happy place."

“She’s had an incredible life and I think it’s wonderful that, at 84 years old, she has found something that makes her so happy," she told the newspaper.

Alioto added that Fang plans to file a cross-complaint against city officials on April 11, saying her constitutional rights to free speech and religion were violated.

Tim Iglesias, a property professor at the University of San Francisco School of Law, told the AP that it was unusual for Fang to ignore 3 stop-work orders issued by the city. She also ignored an administrative order to remove the installations by Dec. 5, 2018, although she paid a $200 fine.

Iglesias noted that the government has the right to enforce public safety codes and to ensure property owners don't impinge on the rights of other property owners.

"This is a situation where a very wealthy, sophisticated homeowner has basically thumbed her nose at the city consistently," he told the AP. "If they let her get away, then all the other wealthy people in Hillsborough can say, 'Hey, I can do whatever I want with my property. Who cares about the planning department?'"

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

NBA notebook: Stunned LeBron stands behind Lakers’ plan

NBA: Portland Trail Blazers at Los Angeles Lakers

April 11, 2019

Count Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James among those who were stunned by team president Magic Johnson’s resignation on Tuesday night. But according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne on Wednesday, James still stands behind the organization and Lakers owner Jeanie Buss.

ESPN also reported that head coach Luke Walton participated in exit meetings with the players on Wednesday. Walton’s job security is in jeopardy after the Lakers (37-45) missed the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season despite the offseason signing of James to a four-year, $154 million deal.

James, 34, battled injuries and appeared in a career-low 55 games and averaged 27.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game in 2018-19.

–Following his meeting with Walton, James headed to New York, where he, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony watched Dwyane Wade play his final NBA game. The Miami Heat closed out the season against the Brooklyn Nets.

After a pregame video tribute to Wade, the retiring superstar went over and hugged each of his three friends. The four have been friends for years, their bond immortalized by a photo of James, Wade and Paul riding a banana boat together while on vacation in 2015. Anthony was not in the picture but was also on vacation with the group.

–Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart has a torn left oblique and could miss the first two rounds of the Eastern Conference playoffs, according to a report from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Smart averaged 8.9 points, 4.0 assists and 2.9 rebounds this season for the Celtics, who will be the fourth seed in the East after posting a 49-33 regular-season record. Boston will open at home this weekend against the fifth-seeded Indiana Pacers. The physical guard is noted as one of the NBA’s top defenders.

Smart sustained the injury in a game against the Orlando Magic on Sunday, and he did not play in Tuesday’s regular-season finale at Washington.

–Anthony Davis acknowledged that despite his desire to leave New Orleans, he could begin the 2019-20 season with the Pelicans.

“I’m under contract still,” Davis said during an informal season-ending news conference. “I have a year left. Obviously it’s a possibility it could happen. I don’t have ill will toward anybody. I know that it’s a possibility that next year I could be here as well. So I can’t be mad if I’m here next year.”

Davis said his next step will be to see who emerges as the general manager for the Pelicans. Dell Demps was fired in February after his handling of the Davis situation, and Danny Ferry is the interim general manager.

–The Phoenix Suns have hired longtime NBA general manager Jeff Bower as their vice president of operations, Wojnarowski reported.

Bower, 57, was general manager of the then-New Orleans Hornets from October 2005 to July 2010, and he also served as the team’s head coach for most of the 2009-10 season after the firing of Byron Scott.

The Suns have been without a general manager since Ryan McDonough was fired a week before the start of the 2018-19 season.

–The Minnesota Timberwolves plan to offer interim coach Ryan Saunders a multiyear deal as early as this week, league sources told ESPN.

Saunders, 32, is the youngest head coach in the league. He took over when Tom Thibodeau was fired in early January and has earned the endorsement of his players, most notably from All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns.

The Timberwolves were 36-45 entering Wednesday night’s season finale at Denver, including a 17-24 mark under Saunders’ leadership. Saunders reportedly will receive a three-year deal with a team option on the final season.

–The Timberwolves also announced that guard Jeff Teague underwent successful debridement surgery Tuesday to clean out his left ankle. The team had no additional updates as to any recovery timetable.

Teague played in 42 games for the Minnesota this season, averaging 12.1 points and a career-best 8.2 assists in 30.1 minutes. The team shut him down for the season in mid-March.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said trade talks with China are going very well, as the world’s two largest economies seek to end talks with a trade agreement to defuse tensions.

Trump said on Thursday he would soon host China’s President Xi Jinping at the White House.

Earlier this week, the White House said that Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer would travel to Beijing for more talks on a trade dispute marked by tit-for-tat tariffs between the two countries.

MOSCOW/MINSK (Reuters) – Russia is confident it can soon resolve a problem of polluted Russian oil contaminating a major pipeline serving Europe and affecting supplies as far west as Germany, a senior official said on Friday at talks with importers about the issue.

Russian Deputy Energy Minister Pavel Sorokin did not give a precise timeframe but Moscow has previously said it would pump clean oil to the border with Belarus from April 29, seeking to end a crisis hitting the world’s second-largest crude exporter.

Sorokin was speaking at talks with officials from Belarus, Poland and Ukraine in Minsk on the issue. Belarus said the issue had cost it $100 million, while analysts say alternative supply routes for refiners cannot fully fill the gap.

Poland, Germany, Ukraine and Slovakia have suspended imports of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline. Halting those supplies has knock-on effects further along the network.

The problem arose last week when an unidentified Russian producer contaminated oil with high levels of organic chloride used to boost oil output but which must be separated before shipment as it can destroy refining equipment.

Russia’s Energy Ministry said pipeline monopoly Transneft and other Russian companies had a plan to mitigate the effects of the contaminated oil. It did not give details.

Russian officials have said contaminated oil has already been pumped into storage in Russia and Friday’s talks would focus on how to partially withdraw the tainted crude from the Druzhba pipeline running via other countries.

The suspension cuts off a major supply route for Polish refineries owned by Poland’s PKN Orlen and Grupa Lotos, as well as plants in Germany owned by Total, Shell, Eni and Rosneft.

Some refiners have outlined plans for alternative supplies, but analysts say other routes cannot meet the shortfall.

OIL PRICES

Ukraine’s Ukrtransnafta suspended the transit of oil through the pipeline on Thursday, closing supplies via Druzhba’s southern route to Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary.

The pipeline issue, which has supported global oil prices, lifted Russian Urals crude differentials to an all-time high on Thursday.

With pipeline supplies to Europe shut, Russia faces a challenge of how to divert about 1 million barrels per day (bpd) that was meant to be shipped through the network to other destinations at the time when export capacity is at its limits.

State-run Russian Railways held talks with energy firms on using up to 5,000 rail tankers to transport crude, RIA news agency reported on Friday.

Concerns about the quality of Urals crude also caused delays in loadings at the Baltic port of Ust-Luga, when buyers refused to lift cargoes, resulting in a brief shutdown of the port on Wednesday and Thursday. An Ust-Luga official and traders said on Friday loadings had resumed.

Russian loading plans indicate it aims to boost Urals exports in May before the expiry of a deal on output cuts agreed with the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies, Reuters calculations and Energy Ministry data show.

The provisional loading plan for Russia’s Baltic Sea ports and Novorossiisk in May show exports rising to 10.7 million tonnes, the highest level in half a decade.

Minsk estimated its loss from lower oil product exports due to contaminated Russian oil at around $100 million, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported on Thursday, citing Belarusian state oil company Belneftekhim.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, in charge of government energy policy, said this week that those found responsible for contaminating the oil could be fined. He did not provide names.

(Reuters) – India has once again delayed the implementation of higher tariffs on some goods imported from the United States to May 15, a government official said on Friday.

The new tariff structure was to come into force from May 2, the spokeswoman said without citing reasons for the delay.

Angered by Washington’s refusal to exempt it from new steel and aluminum tariffs, New Delhi decided in June last year to raise the import tax from Aug. 4 on some U.S. products including almonds, walnuts and apples.

But since then, New Delhi has repeatedly delayed the implementation of the new tariff.

Trade friction between India and the U.S. has escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans earlier this year to end preferential trade treatment for India that allows duty-free entry for up to $5.6 billion worth of its exports to the United States.

In a further blow, U.S. on Monday demanded buyers of Iranian oil stop purchases by May or face sanctions, ending six months of waivers which allowed Iran’s eight biggest buyers including India to continue importing limited volumes.

One of Joe Biden’s newly-hired senior advisers has seemingly had a very recent change of heart.

Symone Sanders, a prominent Democratic strategist and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., staffer in 2016, was announced as one of the big-name members of Team Biden on Thursday.

But Sanders, who has also served as a CNN contributor, is seen in resurfaced footage from November 2016 expressing her opposition to a white person leading her party after Donald Trump’s election.

“In my opinion, we don’t need white people leading the Democratic party right now,” Sanders told host Brianna Keilar during a discussion on Howard Dean potentially becoming DNC chairman.

BIDEN HIRES FORMER BERNIE SANDERS’ SPOKESPERSON AS SENIOR ADVISER

“The Democratic party is diverse, and it should be reflected as so in leadership and throughout the staff, at the highest levels. From the vice chairs to the secretaries all the way down to the people working in the offices at the DNC,” she said.

Sanders wrapped up her remarks by saying: “I want to hear more from everybody. I want to hear from the millennials and the brown folks.”

Footage of the interview was resurfaced by RealClearPolitics.

After news of her hiring broke on Thursday, Sanders backed her new boss on Twitter.

TRUMP ASSESSES 2020 DEMS; TAKES SWIPES AT BIDEN, SANDERS; DISMISSES HARRIS, O’ROURKE; SAYS HE’S ROOTING FOR BUTTIGIEG

“@JoeBiden & @DrBiden are a class act. Over the course of this campaign, Vice President Biden is going to make his case to the American ppl. He won’t always be perfect, but I believe he will get it right,” she wrote.

The hiring of Sanders has been viewed as another indication of the expected tough fight that Biden and Sanders are in for as the two frontrunners battle a deep Democratic field.

While Sanders himself didn’t torch Biden as he jumped into the race, it’s clear that many of his progressive supporters view the former vice president as a threat.

Biden’s entry into the race – at least in the early going – sets up a battle between himself and Sanders, who thanks to his fierce fight with eventual nominee Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic nomination, enjoys name ID on the level of the former vice president.

BIDEN VOWS THAT ‘AMERICA IS COMING BACK,’ SPARKING ‘MAGA’ COMPARISONS

Justice Democrats — who also called Biden “out-of-touch” – is an increasingly influential group among the left of the party. They’ve championed progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York as well as Sanders. The group was founded by members of Sanders 2016 presidential campaign.

Biden has pushed back against the perception that he’s a moderate in a party that’s increasingly moving to the left. Earlier this month he described himself as an “Obama-Biden Democrat.”
