Koepka comfortable to be in chasing pack at Masters

Third round play of the Masters at Augusta National

April 14, 2019

By Frank Pingue

AUGUSTA Ga. (Reuters) – Brooks Koepka relinquished his share of the Masters lead on Saturday but the American is not about to panic given the increased self-belief that helped him bag two of the last three majors.

On a day when Augusta National, which had been softened by rain earlier in the week, was yielding low scores Koepka could only muster a three-under-par 69 that left him alone in fourth place and three shots back of leader Francesco Molinari.

“I’m pretty comfortable being in, being up there on the leaderboard in a major come Sunday,” said Koepka, whose roller-coaster round included an eagle, five birdies and four bogeys. “So I enjoy it, it’s fun, getting definitely more comfortable with it as every major goes by.

“I feel good and I like my chances tomorrow.”

Koepka, who does not have a top-10 finish in three previous starts at the Masters and missed the event in 2018 due to a wrist injury, was chugging along at one-under on the day when he stepped up to the par-five 15th and gave his Green Jacket hopes a boost.

The three-times major champion launched his drive 332 yards up the fairway and then made an eagle after his approach shot settled 10 feet from the cup.

That hole not only salvaged his round but could go a long way to determining if he is to slip into a Green Jacket after Sunday’s final round, which is starting a 7:30 a.m. ET (1130 GMT).

Due to an ominous weather forecast, golfers will go off from the first and 10th tees in threesomes and Koepka will be followed around the course by the final grouping of Molinari, Tiger Woods and Tony Finau.

Koepka has said all week he was focused on his own game and not worrying about what anyone else is doing, but that could prove tough come Sunday with the leaders playing right behind him.

“I can’t control anything that they’re doing with ‑‑ whatever they’re going to do, they’re going to do,” said Koepka. “So just need to go out there and hopefully they can see something on the board where it’ll make them a little nervous.”

Rep. Pete King Blames Ocasio-Cortez For Amazon's NYC Pullout

Rep. Pete King Blames Ocasio-Cortez For Amazon's NYC Pullout

Amazon would have stayed the course with its planned New York City campus if Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., was not an outspoken critic of the deal, Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., said Sunday.

King was on "The Cats Roundtable" radio show with John Catsimatidis and discussed the project that was canceled earlier this week.

"If Joe Crowley was still the congressman, it wouldn’t have happened," King said.

Crowley, a Democrat, served in the House for 20 years. Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described Democratic Socialist who previously worked as a New York City bartender, beat him in last year's Democratic primary and then went on to win the seat in the November midterm election.

"The Democrats now control everything. If the Republicans controlled the state Senate, this would not have happened. And the fact is, that is where it was really killed," said King, referring to New York's Democratic-controlled state legislature.

Ocasio-Cortez and other critics of the Amazon deal, which would have created 25,000 jobs in Long Island City, said the state went too far in offering the online retail giant tax incentives. After multiple discussions, Amazon said Thursday the planned project was canceled.

"It's like putting a sign up that you can't do business in New York," King said Sunday. "Nothing is ever perfect, but in this case, it was as close to it as you're going to get."

Rush: Justice Dept. Reported 25th Amendment Talks 'Silent Coup'

Rush: Justice Dept. Reported 25th Amendment Talks 'Silent Coup'

Justice Department officials’ reported discussions about using the 25th Amendment to oust President Donald Trump was “a silent coup,” radio host Rush Limbaugh said Sunday.

In a interview on “Fox News Sunday,” the conservative Trump ally railed at the explosive remarks by former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe in a "60 Minutes" interview set to air Sunday.

Limbaugh said the intent of the reported discussions was clear — and that those involved ought to be jailed.

“People unelected, simply because they don't … like where he came from… decide …the American people's decision was invalid and began a systematic process to get him thrown out of office. This is a silent coup,” he said.

“These guys, if you ask me, ought to be the ones in jail. They are to be the ones under investigation. What they have done working with agents in the Obama intelligence agencies is simply unprecedented."

Limbaugh also railed at political attempts by “both parties”  to dump the president.

“Both parties have people that are still trying to get rid of Donald Trump,” he said, saying even legislative efforts regarding illegal immigrants carry a message to voters that “electing Trump was pointless, worthless, he can't protect you, you can't stop us, he can't do what he said he was going to do because we hate him so much were not going to allow him to do that.”

Cyprus to EU: Speed up granting name protection for halloumi

Cyprus is urging the European Union to speed up the process granting full name protection to halloumi cheese, the east Mediterranean island nation's top culinary export.

Cyprus government spokesman Prodromos Prodromou told The Associated Press on Wednesday that authorities are pressing the European Commission to speed things up. An application, filed in 2015 amid talks to reunify ethnically split Cyprus, would limit use of the name in EU countries to halloumi made only on both sides of the divide. But Cyprus peace talks collapsed in 2017.

Cyprus recently lost the halloumi trademark in the U.K. due to what officials said was an administrative foul-up.

Italy February business morale falls to lowest in almost three years amid recession

February 27, 2019

Feb 27 (Reuters) – Morale among Italian manufacturers declined to its lowest level in almost three years and consumer sentiment also declined in February after the economy dipped into recession at the end of last year.

ISTAT’s manufacturing confidence index fell to 101.7 in February from a revised 102.0 in January, national statistics office ISTAT said on Wednesday.

The reading was slightly above the median forecast of 101.4 in a Reuters survey of 11 analysts, but the lowest for the index since August 2016.

ISTAT’s composite business morale index, combining surveys of the manufacturing, retail, construction and services sectors, also declined in February to 98.3, its lowest in four years, from a revised 99.1 in January.

Consumer confidence fell in February to 112.4, the index’s lowest level since August 2017, and lower than a median forecast of 113.0 in a Reuters survey of eight analysts. In January, consumer sentiment was a revised 113.9.

The surveys come after Italy’s economy, the euro zone’s third biggest, slumped into its third recession in a decade in the second half of last year.

Sentiment is declining amid rising tensions within the governing populist coalition. Disagreements between the ruling League party and its 5-Star Movement partner have been bubbling up over a series of issues, including the construction of an Alpine tunnel.

The government forecasts GDP growth of 1 percent this year, but most independent bodies expect it to come in at little more than half that rate.

ISTAT gave the following data on the February manufacturing confidence survey:

Santander focused on Europe cost cuts, Latin American profit

By Jesús Aguado

MADRID (Reuters) – Santander assured investors on Wednesday that cost savings in mature markets in Europe and higher profitability growth in Latin America were enough to deliver on midterm financial targets while pushing its digital transformation.

Santander said it was aiming for incremental annual cost savings of 1.2 billion euros ($1.4 billion) in the medium term, of which 1 billion euros would come from Europe.

Europe’s banks are focused on cost savings as they attempt to offset a squeeze on margins due to ongoing record-low interest rates in the euro zone.

Santander shares were up 2.1 percent at 116 GMT against a 1.4 percent rise on the European STOXX banking index.

As part of its focus on efficiency in Europe, it said it was expecting 250 million euros of additional cost savings in Spain from the integration of Popular to boost its underlying profitability to between 14-16 percent from around 11 percent.

When it first announced the acquisition of Popular in 2017, Santander said it was expecting cost synergies of close to 500 million euros per year from 2020.

In Britain, Santander’s third biggest market, it said that as part of its strategy it would focus on cost management and continued risk discipline, without giving any specifics.

Of its main markets, Britain was the area with the lowest underlying profitability target ratio. It set out a target of between 10-12 percent from 9 percent in 2018.

Santander is expecting the British economy to grow around 1 percent over the next couple of years partially due to uncertainty over Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

“It could be better and it could be worse, but your guess is as good as mine. As to what’s going to happen I’m a bit confused,” Sandtander Chairman Ana Botin said when asked about the Brexit outcome. She stressed that the lender was taking a conservative approach toward lending in Britain.

Santander said around 730 million euros of the total cost savings would come from efficiency gains in IT and operations and 220 million euros from shared services across regions, including Britain.

The bank also said it was aiming to reach a cost-income ratio – a measure of efficiency – of between 42 percent and 45 percent at group level in the medium term from 47 percent.

Santander reiterated it was aiming to lift its return on tangible equity (ROTE), a measure of profitability, to 13-15 percent in the medium term from 11.7 percent in 2018.

LATIN AMERICA PROFITABILITY

In Brazil, the bank’s biggest market, Santander said it was expecting low interest rates to maintain growth in its loan book and keep improving its underlying ROTE above 20 percent.

Its business in Latin America, responsible for 43 percent of the bank’s profits, was seen rising its profitability to between 20-22 percent, thanks to high and sustainable revenue growth.

Santander also repeated a mid-term core Tier 1 capital ratio target of 11-12 percent, against 11.3 percent in 2018 but below the average of more than 12.5 percent among its European peers.

Botin dismissed analysts’ concerns over the bank’s capital adequacy, highlighting the lender’s lower risk retail and higher diversification model.

“Being prudent, having more capital, we all want that but at some point enough is enough and if they keep on building buffers and buffers, Europe will not grow, banks in Europe will have increasing problems and they will have less inclination to lend,” Botin told investors in London.

With banks facing increasing competition from so-called new technology entrants, Santander also unveiled a plan to expand its digital bank, Open Bank, to 10 new international markets in order to reach two million customers.

As part of its digital drive, Santander said it would invest over 20 billion euros in technology over the next four years.

A California man who allegedly fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight last month before fleeing the country has been returned to the U.S. following his arrest in Mexico on Wednesday, authorities said.

Julio Cesar Rocha, 25, of Montlcair, is accused of shooting his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend Thalia Flores and a second unidentified male victim March 21 around 2:45 p.m. while the two were sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of a discount store in Chino. Both communities are about 36 miles east of Los Angeles.

Flores died at the scene. The man, whose name was not released, walked to a nearby hospital where he’s recovering from his gunshot wounds.

Rocha allegedly fled the scene and remained at large for more than a month, the Daily Bulletin reported. He was formally arrested at 4:30 p.m. after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport from Mexico, KTLA-TV reported.

The suspect was booked at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on murder and attempted murder charges, the City of Chino Police Department said on Facebook.

Flores ended her seven-year relationship with Rocha just two months before her death and still lived in fear of him until that point, a sister of the victim, Bernice Flores, told the Daily Bulletin.

“He said himself so many times to other people, ‘If I can’t have her, no one will.’ ” Flores said, adding that her sister stayed in the relationship longer that she would have liked in fear that Rocha would hurt her or her family if they broke up.

Rocha was convicted on misdemeanor battery in 2016 and sentenced to 60 days in prison. He was originally charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, but the charges were lowered in a plea deal, the Daily Bulletin reported.

Rocha was convicted of misdemeanor resisting or obstructing a peace officer in 2014. A second charge of misdemeanor battery was dropped in a plea deal, and Rocha was ordered to complete a 26-week anger management course, according to San Bernardino County Superior Court records. Rocha was later arrested and sentenced to 10 days behind bars for failing to complete the course.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”
