Americans to bet $8.5 billion on NCAA’s ‘March Madness’ basketball tournament: report

NEW YORK (Reuters) – About 47 million people – one in five American adults – are expected to bet a combined $8.5 billion on “March Madness,” the annual men’s college basketball tournament, a new report said on Monday.

A plurality of bettors – 29 percent – favor Duke University’s Blue Devils to win, according to a report from the American Gaming Association (AGA), a casino industry group.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association’s tournament to determine the Division I men’s basketball champions begins on Tuesday and ends April 8 in Minneapolis.

This year is the first time the tournament will be held since a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in May 2018 allowed states to legalize, regulate and tax sports betting.

Eight states now offer legal sports wagers, including Nevada, which was never subject to a ban.

More than $5.9 billion has been bet on sports in those eight states since the court decision, the AGA said in its report.

As the nascent legal U.S. sports betting industry expands, major events like the NCAA’s March Madness are providing first glimpses of how many betters may want to move from illegal to legal wagering, and how much money casinos, racetracks and bookmakers stand to make in the years to come.

Forecasts had suggested Americans would wager $325 million this year on another traditionally huge betting event, the Super Bowl.

But the two biggest state markets so far – Nevada and New Jersey – fell short. Nevada handled just $146 million of legal bets, an 8 percent drop from the previous year’s record $159 million.

A report from Eilers & Krejcik gaming analysts on Friday estimated that if all 50 U.S. states had legal online sports betting, sportsbooks would handle $15.2 billion of total wagers just for March Madness alone, grossing about $1.2 billion of revenue.

By March of 2023, as many as 39 states could have legal sports betting, Eilers & Krejcik found.

As for this year, March Madness will likely generate $4.6 billion of wagers from 40 million people betting with friends and colleagues through a total 149 million brackets, the AGA said.

The remaining $3.9 billion of wagers will come mostly by way of illegal offshore websites and bookies, though 4.1 million people will also place legal bets through licensed casinos and sportsbook operators.

“These results indicate there’s still work to do to eradicate the vast illegal sports betting market in this country,” said AGA Chief Executive Officer Bill Miller in a statement.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – One of President Donald Trump’s prospective Federal Reserve nominees, businessman Herman Cain, said on Thursday he was not withdrawing from consideration for the post, although his chances of winning the Senate’s needed approval appear dim.

In an interview with Fox News Channel, Cain said it was not clear that the minds of four Republican senators who have voiced concerns about his nomination cannot be changed.

If their opposition holds, and if all Senate Democrats and the two independents who caucus with them also oppose Cain, his nomination would fail to win the majority backing needed in the Senate for Cain’s confirmation.

Regulators fine Wynn Resorts $20 M over sex allegations

Nevada gambling regulators have fined casino mogul Steve Wynn's former company a record $20 million for failing to investigate claims of sexual misconduct made against him before he resigned a year ago.

The penalty announced Tuesday against Wynn Resorts Ltd. settles an investigation that began after The Wall Street Journal reported that several women said the company founder harassed or assaulted them.

The agreement with the Nevada Gaming Commission allows Wynn Resorts to keep its gambling license.

The fine tops the previous highest in state history: a $5.5 million penalty in 2014 against the sports betting company now known as CG Technology.

Steve Wynn himself is not part of the Wynn Resorts settlement. He has denied any allegations of wrongdoing.

Tucker Carlson roasts Mexican official over his country’s treatment of immigrants

Fox News' Tucker Carlson became frustrated Wednesday night when a Mexican state-level official refused to address how the Mexican government treats illegal immigrants -- or even address the official's own past comments that Carlson described as "hostile" toward the U.S.

“Why not let them stay forever? Vote in your elections? But remain Guatemalan and Hondurans ... Why don’t you let them do that?" Carlson said to Juan Hernandez, secretary of migrant and foreign affairs for the Mexican state of Guanajuato.

"And they can account for a third of your population? Why would that be bad? Why are you kicking them out after a year?” Carlson continued on "Tucker Carlson Tonight."

TED CRUZ WARNS CLOSING THE BORDER WOULD BE DEVASTATING TO TEXAS

“These are individuals escaping hunger and violence. ... These are good people. Looking for a better life. These good people, these are not bad people,” Hernandez responded.

“Please answer my question. They’re in Mexico. Why are you kicking them out? They’re good people who just want to work,” Carlson pressed.

Hernandez paused before adding, “Mexico today has now deported more people to Central America than the U.S. has.”

The immigration crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border continues to be a top political topic as President Trump threatens to shut down “large sections” of the border and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen compares the crisis to a "Cat 5" hurricane.

Carlson earlier told Hernandez the Mexican government was “clearly hostile to American interests,” and asked the Mexican official about comments he made in the past, including saying that the “Mexican population is 100 million in Mexico and 23 million who live in the United States ... We are a united nation."

“I wonder if a government takes that position, that it’s sending foreign nationals into your country,” Carlson told Hernandez. “That’s a hostile act. So why are we sending money to a country committing hostile acts against us?”

“No no, it’s not a hostile act at all,” Hernandez said, laughing off the comments he said were from 15 years ago.

“The United States and Mexico are friends, they are partners.”

Carlson grew frustrated with conversation, saying, “You can lie about it all you want. But it is. Why are we paying you money?”

“Don’t call me a liar, my friend. Let’s talk about these immigrants,” Hernandez said before the conversation became repetitive.

(Reuters) – Swiss drugmaker Roche will close its manufacturing plant in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, shuttering operations over the next five years before selling the plot, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

Located in the neighborhood of Jacarepagua, the plant makes products for Latin America and Europe, and currently employees 440 Roche workers and around 200 contractors, the company said.

“In light of the evolving product portfolio and future lower production volumes, Roche took the difficult decision to plan the phase-out of operations at the manufacturing site in Rio de Janeiro,” the company said.

“Employees on site will receive the best possible support during the coming years, while Roche stays committed to reliably supply high-quality products to patients until closure of the site.”

It added that it would continue to operate in Brazil at its two plants in Sao Paulo and Goias states.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

Lakewood police tweeted there were multiple fatalities but did not give a specific number. Six people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released, according to the paper.

Lanes in both directions were closed and expected to remain so into Friday morning.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
