Substance behind some leading Dem candidates called into question on ‘MacCallum’

Former Democratic National Committee chairmanship candidate Jehmu Greene and Washington Examiner opinion editor Charlie Hurt both voiced concerns with some leading 2020 Dems in an appearance on “The Story with Martha MacCallum” on Thursday.

“My question to Mayor Pete [Buttigieg], to a lot of these you know almost running folks. Where's the substance?” Greene asked.

HOWARD SCHULTZ: TRUMP WILL GET RE-ELECTED IF BERNIE SANDERS WINS DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION

“You know we've seen from Kamala Harris a plan to give teachers a pay raise that they so desperately need. We've seen policy positions from Elizabeth Warren that go into just so much detail whether it's breaking up Facebook and other tech giants or universal child care.”

Greene took some of the more popular candidates to task for relying on personality rather than offering clearer plans for their presidencies.

“There's a real issue I have with the intention that Howard Schultz and some of these other ‘B’ brothers who are running on the Democratic side, the attention they get for the personality versus the substance,” Greene said, noting many of the male prospects have B’s in their name (Beto O'Rourke, Joe Biden, Peter Buttigieg, Bernie Sanders).

Hurt took the Democrats to task for their “fringe” policies and noted that President Trump seems very confident so far with the field taking shape (Biden, to be technical, has not yet officially declared his intent to run, but has been discussed alongside the official contenders.)

“You've got a party that is built on identity politics and for two old white guys to be sort of collecting the lion's share of the support at the moment is trouble,” Hurt said.

“You know Donald Trump looks at this field and he feels very confident because he sees these Democrats they're all falling over one another and trying to support things like open borders or reparations now or ...live-birth abortion, all these crazy things that are really fringe.”

Speedway: Triple champion Woffinden setting his sights on seven

By Alan Baldwin

LONDON (Reuters) – Tai Woffinden has so many tattoos, he is not sure where he would put one to celebrate a record seventh speedway world championship.

The Briton, who grew up in Western Australia, has ‘only’ the three titles so far but has no doubt he will need to save some space on his skin.

“I want to be the greatest of all time. There’s two guys that have won six so I want to be one better and be the greatest,” he told Reuters.

“I’m 28. If I stay enthusiastic I’ve got another 15 years at it,” added Woffinden, in London to collect the Royal Automobile Club’s Torrens Trophy.

Woffinden has so far refrained from inking any of his speedway successes onto his body because the target is not yet half reached, but the canvas is shrinking.

He has ‘Pain is weakness leaving the body’ written on his upper torso and he has had plenty of broken bones to know about that, and suffering too.

“My wife’s brother is a tattoo artist. I’m at the point now where if I see a gap, I need to fill it. So there’s a gap here on my wrist, a tattoo needs to go here to fill that gap,” he said.

“I can’t have a three time world champion on my wrist because then when I am a seven times world champion, I won’t have enough room on my wrist to put it. So I’ll wait until I’m finished and then I can get it.

“I haven’t done my legs yet so there’s still plenty of space.”

Speedway is motorsport in the raw — 500cc motorbikes with a single gear and no brakes that accelerate faster than a Formula One car and power-slide around shale-based oval circuits at speeds of up to 130kph and a heady whiff of methanol.

Tough on riders, with the constant risk of injury, it was once hugely popular in Britain but now struggles for media attention despite crowds of 50,000 for the showcase British Grand Prix at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.

MINORITY SPORT

“I’d love for somebody like (snooker and darts entrepreneur) Barry Hearn in his spare time to come and look into it and say ‘yeah, I’ll take that on,'” said Woffinden, whose late father Rob was also a speedway rider.

“It’s an exciting sport but it’s classed as a minority sport. You walk through the grandstand and there seems to be a lot more older people, there’s no younger people yet it’s a younger generation of kids that are riding bikes.

“We are all in our 20s so why isn’t that attracting a 20-year-old fanbase? Because its relatable. They can go, ‘Wow, look at this guy he’s the same age as me and he’s doing this, this and this.”

Woffinden races mostly in Sweden and Poland, where it is so mainstream that there are even speedway hooligans and his WTS Wroclaw club’s 17,000 seat stadium is sold out for home races.

In Britain he is used to being recognized — the big discs in his earlobes an easy spot — but not when it comes to events such as the BBC sports personality of the year, where he failed to make it onto the shortlist last year.

In 1966, England’s World Cup winning soccer captain Bobby Moore won with speedway rider Barry Briggs runner-up. Geoff Hurst, England’s hat-trick hero in the final, was third.

“There will be a point where they can’t overlook me. Maybe when I win my seventh and become the greatest of all time. At that point they will physically not be able to do it,” said Woffinden.

Growing up in Perth, with an Australian passport and spending his winters there, he started out in taekwondo but abandoned it for speedway after reaching black belt.

If he sounds more like an Antipodean than someone born in Scunthorpe, he is also proud to race for the country of his birth.

“The Australians call me their adopted world champion and some of the Brits call me a British world champion,” he said.

“And some of the Brits also call me a stupid Australian idiot and say I should represent Australia because I love Australia more than I love England.

“But at the end of the day, mate, my parents are English and I was born in England and I represent England.”

Prosecutors weigh charges for Pennsylvania official arrested

Prosecutors said Friday they are weighing criminal charges against an elected official from Pennsylvania after she had an altercation with police officers at a Detroit hotel.

Allegheny County Controller Chelsa Wagner interfered with officers as they were preparing to remove her husband, Khari Mosley, from the premises of the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel early Wednesday, according to police Chief James Craig. He said body camera video shows that Wagner grabbed an officer's jacket and tried to block an elevator.

Wagner, a Democrat, was arrested and spent about 12 hours in jail.

Her lawyer disputed the chief's account, contending that police assaulted Wagner, a former state representative serving her second term as Allegheny County's chief fiscal officer. Allegheny County includes Pittsburgh.

Craig said Wagner could face charges that include assault and battery. Prosecutors in Detroit confirmed Friday they have received a "warrant request" for a "Pittsburgh official" but said no decision on charges has been made.

"The matter is currently being reviewed," said a statement from the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. "No further information will be released until a charging decision is made."

Wagner and Mosley were in Detroit for a concert. Afterward, Wagner went to their room while Mosley went to the hotel bar. Chief Craig said officers were called to the Westin by hotel security. He said they escorted Mosley back to his room but returned when the hotel again asked for help to remove him from the premises.

Craig told reporters Friday that Mosley and Wagner "appeared to be under some level of intoxication," based on his training and his viewing of the body camera video.

The Associated Press left a message requesting comment on Craig's statement that Wagner appeared to be under the influence with her lawyer, Heather Heidelbaugh.

Heidelbaugh told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Wagner saw her husband in handcuffs and asked officers where they were taking him. She said Wagner tried getting on an elevator ahead of police and her husband. At that point, she said, "the cop grabs her, pulls her out of the elevator and throws her to the ground."

Craig said the video backs up his account of what happened.

"She grabbed officer's jacket first; she was interfering and tried to block the elevator," Craig told The Detroit News. "The officers were being very polite, saying 'ma'am, please.' At some point she decided to grab the officer, and he pushed her off him. She started to fall, and the officer tried to grab her to break her fall, because he didn't want her to be injured."

Global economic growth risks skewed to the downside: IMFC

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Global financial officials on Saturday said risks to worldwide economic growth were “tilted to the downside” due to factors such as trade tensions, policy uncertainty and the sudden tightening of financial conditions.

The heightened risks are presenting themselves against a backdrop of limited policy space, historically high debt levels and heightened financial vulnerabilities, officials said in the joint communique of the International Monetary Fund’s steering committee. The statement was released at the spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington.

Earlier, China took a swipe at U.S. President Donald Trump’s “America First” policies that have sparked a trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies, including tit-for-tat tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of goods.

“The protectionism of some countries has harmed mutual trust among countries, limited the scope for multilateral cooperation, and impeded the willingness to achieve it,” Chen Yulu, a vice governor at the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), said in a statement to the International Monetary and Financial Committee, or IMFC.

“Unilateralism and protectionism can only exacerbate domestic imbalances and impair necessary structural adjustments, which can negatively affect the countries concerned as well as global growth,” he said.

House Votes to Block Trump's Border Emergency Declaration

In a stinging rebuke to President Donald Trump, the House of Representatives on Tuesday brushed aside veto threats and passed legislation to terminate the emergency he declared at the U.S.-Mexico border in order to build a wall there.

By a vote of 245-182, the House passed the resolution, setting up a vote in the Republican-controlled Senate where the resolution's chances were slimmer, but seemed to be improving.

While passage was a victory for Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the tally was short of what she would likely need to override a possible veto by Republican Trump. Only 13 Republicans supported the move to stop the president's declaration.

During floor debate, Democratic Representative Joaquin Castro, the main sponsor of the controversial legislation, said, "There is no emergency at the border," adding, "Border crossings are at a four-decades low."

Democrats and some Republicans worry that with the emergency declaration unilaterally funding his border wall without lawmakers' approval, Trump was presenting a dangerous challenge to the constitutional balance of powers between Congress and the executive branch of government.

Hours before the House vote, Republican Senator John Barrasso, a member of the Senate's leadership, told MSNBC in an interview that the legislation "may actually pass the Senate."

Following a closed meeting of Republican senators and Vice President Mike Pence, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to predict the outcome, including whether senators ultimately could override a Trump veto.

McConnell said Republican senators and Pence held a "robust, vigorous discussion" and that he had not "reached a total conclusion" over whether Trump's emergency proclamation was legal.

Meanwhile, the White House formally notified Congress, as expected, that if the measure passes Congress, Trump's advisers would recommend that he veto it in order to maintain the power he activated on Feb. 15 as a way of circumventing Congress.

Trump argues he has the power to proclaim a national emergency to unilaterally direct existing money for building a border wall that Congress has refused to fully fund.

"The current situation at the southern border presents a humanitarian and security crisis that threatens core national security interests and constitutes a national emergency," the White House statement said.

A Trump veto would be the first of his presidency and the first since Republicans lost majority control of the House in last November's congressional elections.

Overriding such a veto in Congress would require two-thirds majorities in both chambers, making it highly unlikely, said lawmakers.

The battle in Congress is the latest chapter in a long-running war between Trump and Democrats over border security, immigration policy and the "great, great wall" that Trump has pledged to build since becoming a presidential candidate.

He originally promised that Mexico would pay for it, but after Mexico refused, he asked U.S. taxpayers to foot the bill for a project Democrats say is unneeded and will not be effective.

In his first two years in office, Trump's Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress, which under the U.S. Constitution holds the national purse strings.

During that time they failed to appropriate all the money Trump was seeking to build a wall. This year, with Democrats in control of the House, Congress refused Trump's demand for $5.7 billion in wall funding. Instead, he got $1.37 billion for border barriers this fiscal year.

Angry over that decision, Trump declared the emergency and vowed to divert funds toward the wall from accounts already committed by Congress for other purposes.

On a separate track from Congress, the future of Trump's emergency declaration is also likely to be litigated in the courts.

A coalition of 16 U.S. states led by California has already sued Trump and top members of his administration to block his emergency declaration.

Writing on Twitter on Monday, Trump, who says the wall is needed to stop illegal immigration and drugs, warned Republicans not to "fall into the Democrats 'trap' of Open Borders and Crime!"

Republican Representative Justin Amash was the lone Republican co-sponsoring the resolution in the House.

"The same congressional Republicans who joined me in blasting Pres. Obama’s executive overreach now cry out for a king to usurp legislative powers," Amash wrote on Twitter.

The White House was working to limit Republican support for the measure, especially in the Senate.

Nevertheless, Republican Senator Thom Tillis, in an opinion article published in the Washington Post, said he backed Trump on border security, but would vote for the resolution because he "cannot justify providing the executive with more ways to bypass Congress."

Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski on Tuesday told reporters she would back the resolution. Previously, her Republican colleague, Susan Collins had said she likely would support the measure, too. For it to pass the Senate, at least one more Republican vote would be needed, assuming all Democrats and two independents back it.

A California man who allegedly fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight last month before fleeing the country has been returned to the U.S. following his arrest in Mexico on Wednesday, authorities said.

Julio Cesar Rocha, 25, of Montlcair, is accused of shooting his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend Thalia Flores and a second unidentified male victim March 21 around 2:45 p.m. while the two were sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of a discount store in Chino. Both communities are about 36 miles east of Los Angeles.

Flores died at the scene. The man, whose name was not released, walked to a nearby hospital where he’s recovering from his gunshot wounds.

Rocha allegedly fled the scene and remained at large for more than a month, the Daily Bulletin reported. He was formally arrested at 4:30 p.m. after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport from Mexico, KTLA-TV reported.

The suspect was booked at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on murder and attempted murder charges, the City of Chino Police Department said on Facebook.

Flores ended her seven-year relationship with Rocha just two months before her death and still lived in fear of him until that point, a sister of the victim, Bernice Flores, told the Daily Bulletin.

“He said himself so many times to other people, ‘If I can’t have her, no one will.’ ” Flores said, adding that her sister stayed in the relationship longer that she would have liked in fear that Rocha would hurt her or her family if they broke up.

Rocha was convicted on misdemeanor battery in 2016 and sentenced to 60 days in prison. He was originally charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, but the charges were lowered in a plea deal, the Daily Bulletin reported.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”
