Trump Hits Out at 'Low I.Q.' Joe Biden for Misspeaking

President Donald Trump on Monday referred to former Vice President Joe Biden as “another low I.Q. individual,” after he misspoke on Saturday and almost said he was running for president.

Biden, who is considering running for the Democratic nomination in 2020, said at the First State Democratic Dinner in Delaware that he has "the most progressive record of anybody running for the ... anybody who would run" in 2020.

“Joe Biden got tongue tied over the weekend when he was unable to properly deliver a very simple line about his decision to run for President,” Trump tweeted Monday morning. “Get used to it, another low I.Q. individual!”
Trump frequently references I.Q. to insult others. He called actor Robert De Niro a “very low-I.Q. individual,” to MSNBC anchor Mika Brzezinski and California Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters as “low-I.Q.,” and challenged London Mayor Sadiq Khan to take an I.Q. test after the mayor criticized him as ignorant.

Russians lead after pairs short program, French favorites tumble

By Elaine Lies

TOKYO (Reuters) – Russian pair Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov took a commanding lead after the short program at the World Figure Skating Championships in Saitama on Wednesday after a fall left French favorites Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres in seventh.

James and Cipres, undefeated this season and the first French pair to win the European Championship in over 80 years, went down when James botched the landing on their throw triple flip and fell to the ice.

James later said a collision with Italy’s Matteo Guarise during the warm-up prior to their performance had rattled her.

“I didn’t see Matteo, Matteo didn’t see me so we crashed and I fell,” she told the International Skating Union (ISU). “It took me off a little and I was not very comfortable after. I felt a little dizzy, so I tried to stay focused.

“It was a bad skate for us today, and with the fall it was very tiring after.”

Tarasova and Morozov, who placed fourth at the 2018 Winter Olympics and second at last year’s worlds, renewed their season’s best score with 81.21 points in a dramatic, dynamic routine that had the audience clapping along at the Saitama Super Arena, just north of Tokyo.

“During the European Championships we had the same mistake both in short and free programs. Therefore, now we had to train harder not to allow this to happen anymore,” Tarasova said. “We decided to make everything at our maximum.”

James and Cipres were on 68.67 points after their routine, in which Cipres also made an uncharacteristic error when he doubled a toeloop.

“I don’t know what happened,” he said. “The season was long, we were not good on the ice today. It was not our moment, not our day.”

Sui Wenjing and Han Cong of China, who have had an injury-plagued season, were second on 79.24 after delivering a graceful routine, with compatriots Peng Cheng and Jin Yang in third with 75.51.

“While we had several mistakes at the beginning of the program, otherwise the score would be above 80 points, we still performed our best, and we would like to skate well in the free program as well,” Sui said.

The pairs winner will be decided on Thursday with the free program. The championship competitions last until March 23.

CBS: House Dems Plan to Press Barr on Mueller Report

Top House Democrats plan to press Attorney General William Barr on his handling of special counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian collusion during a hearing Tuesday before the House Appropriations Committee, according to CBS News.

Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., plans to tell Barr the way he handled the report was "unacceptable" and his letter about the report "raises more questions than it answers."

Mueller completed his 22-month investigation probe into whether President Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russia on March 22. Two days later, Barr sent a four-page letter to Congress summarizing Mueller's findings.

"I must say, it is extraordinary to evaluate hundreds of pages of evidence, legal documents, and findings based on a 22-month long inquiry and make definitive legal conclusions in less than 48 hours," Lowey, the chairman of the committee, will say. "Even for someone who has done this job before, I would argue it is more suspicious than impressive."

Rep. Jose Serrano, D-N.Y., will ask Barr about reports some members of Mueller's team say the report was more damaging than Barr revealed.

"The American people have been left with many unanswered questions; serious concerns about the process by which you formulated your letter; and uncertainty about when we can expect to see the full report," he will say.

Brussels pushes EU leaders to play public tender card against China

By Philip Blenkinsop

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The European Union executive is urging EU leaders this week to get tough on trade with Beijing and use their 2.4 trillion euro ($2.7 trillion) market in public tenders as leverage to pressure countries such as China to open up.

The bloc has sought to avoid taking sides in a multi-billion dollar trade war between Washington and Beijing, but has become increasingly frustrated by subsidies and state involvement in the Chinese economy, and what it sees as the slow pace of change.

European Commission Vice President Jyrki Katainen told Reuters that the time was gone when China, the EU’s second largest goods trading partner, could argue that it needed to protect its developing economy.

“The old narrative is absolutely obsolete,” he said in an interview.

EU leaders will debate relations with China over dinner at a summit on Thursday.

The Commission now wants to revive a proposal that could lead to the bloc limiting foreign firms’ access to public tenders if there is discrimination against EU firms in their home procurement market.

In such cases, a penalty surcharge of up to 20 percent would be applied to the foreign bids.

The Commission proposed its International Procurement Instrument (IPI) in 2012 and 2016, largely at the instigation of France, but faced resistance from several EU countries.

However, it believes there is more willingness now to be firm with China, notably after EU members late last year backed a system of screening foreign investments for threats to strategic technologies and infrastructure.

“Once they saw concrete acquisitions, everybody started to back the (screening) proposal,” Katainen said. “The same thing will happen with IPI as it’s a way to improve reciprocity.”

Neither the screening law nor the public procurement proposal mention China by name, but the Commission mentioned both in its 10-point action plan on EU-China relations, published last week.

A German EU diplomat welcomed the paper as a whole, calling it “comprehensive and courageous”. However, the northern EU members that are most enthusiastic about free trade fear that the measure smacks of protectionism and could harm taxpayers by shutting out cheaper Chinese providers, for instance.

The Commission says Europe needs to take a coordinated approach and that EU companies face the most discrimination in public procurement worldwide, citing Global Trade Alert data.

Of the 10 countries most discriminated against, five are European, with Germany at the top. However, China comes second, and more than 40 percent of the restrictive measures are applied in or by the United States.

Commission officials said the proposal had in mind restrictions in India, Indonesia, Russia and Turkey, but they would not be drawn on the U.S. Buy American Act at a time when the EU is trying to ease trade tensions with Washington.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the World Bank appeared headed for approval as a nomination deadline passed on Thursday with no challengers emerging, continuing the tradition of the United States choosing the development lender’s president.

David Malpass, the U.S. Treasury undersecretary for international affairs, will move on to an interview with the World Bank’s executive directors in the coming days, the bank said in a statement.

The directors expect to conclude their selection process before the April 12-14 World Bank and International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings, the World Bank said.

Swedish economy expected to slow this year: Reuters poll

OSLO (Reuters) – The Swedish economy will slow this year, as weaker domestic demand and a cooling off in Europe push growth down to a six-year low, a Reuters poll predicted on Friday.

Home to major exporters and such global brands as Ericsson, H&M, Volvo AB and Atlas Copco, Sweden depends on demand from abroad.

Slower public spending and a drop in demand for new homes are among domestic factors expected to restrain the economy, although growth in the final quarter of 2018 was significantly higher than economists had anticipated.

Norway and Denmark, both of which have lagged their Scandinavian neighbor in recent years, will grow at a faster pace than Sweden in 2019, the poll also suggested.

The Swedish economy is expected to slow to 1.6 percent growth in 2019, down from 2.3 percent last year, and below a prediction of 1.9 percent in a Reuters poll in January. That would be the slowest expansion since 2013’s 1.2 percent.

What to know about Bernie Sanders’ Fox News town hall

Bernie Sanders is getting ready to make his pitch for president in front of a large audience at Fox News' town hall next week.

Fox News' Bret Baier, of "Special Report," and Martha MacCallum, of "The Story," will co-anchor the hour-long event. It will be the Vermont senator's first appearance on Fox News Channel since he agreed to be a guest on Baier's show in December 2018. He also participated in Fox News Channel's Democratic town hall back in 2016 alongside his then-competitor Hillary Clinton.

5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT BERNIE SANDERS

Sanders, who raised $18 million in the first six weeks of his campaign, is considered a front-runner among a crowded field of 2020 presidential hopefuls. Before the self-proclaimed Democratic socialist takes the stage next week, here's a look at everything you need to know.

When and where is the Fox News town hall?

The Sanders town hall will take place on Monday, April 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. ET in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

How can I watch it?

You can watch the town hall on the Fox New Channel. The event will also be available via live stream — just log into your TV provider to watch the event in real-time on foxnews.com or the Fox News app.

"The Story with Martha Maccallum" will air on Fox News immediately following the event at 7:30 p.m. ET.

What will Sanders focus on during the town hall?

The 77-year-old — the longest-serving Independent member of Congress ever — is expected to focus on the economy and his plans for U.S. job growth.

"It’s time for an economy that works for all of us, not just the rich," Sanders has repeatedly said in the past.

HOW DID BERNIE SANDERS MAKE HIS MONEY? A LOOK AT HIS WEALTH AND ASSETS

In December 2018, Sanders outlined four ways to "revitalize" the U.S. economy: increasing the minimum wage to $15 by 2024, universal health care, tuition-free colleges and the creation of "millions of jobs" in sustainable energy.

"Our campaign is about creating a government and economy that work for the many, not just the few," tweeted Sanders in February. "We should not have grotesque levels of wealth inequality in which three billionaires own more wealth than the bottom half of the country."

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.

Hundreds of Cuban migrants are reported to be on the run Friday in Mexico after a crowd of more than 1,000 burst out of a troubled immigration detention center on its southern border.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said the mass escape Thursday in Tapachula – which the Associated Press called the largest in recent memory — involved around 1,300 Cuban migrants, although 700 of them have since returned voluntarily.

The migrants reportedly streamed out of the compound without any resistance, as the institute said its agents weren’t armed and “there was no confrontation.”

Federal police with riot shields later rushed in to control the situation, as a crowd of angry Cubans whose relatives were being held at the facility gathered outside. The Cubans claimed their relatives reported overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at the facility.

BORDER PATROL UNION CHIEF BLASTS CONGRESS OVER MIGRANT CARAVANS: ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT’?

“My wife and child have been in there for 27 days in bad conditions,” said Usmoni Velazquez Vallejo, as he waited outside for news. “There is overcrowding, insufficient food and there isn’t even medicine for them.”

Another Cuban detainee told the AFP: “We have many there… we are very tight, we sleep on the floor.”

It’s the third time since October that migrants at the facility staged an uprising, according to the news agency.

The center’s holding capacity is officially listed at less than 1,000 people, but the escape of 1,300 meant it was probably at least at double its capacity, since not everyone being held there escaped. Residents in the area said that sometimes the facility has held as many as 3,000 people, and a Mexican newspaper cited by Reuters said Haitians and Central Americans also are among the large group who still have not been tracked down.

Earlier in the day, Mexico’s top human rights official toured the facility.

Elsewhere in the country, a new caravan estimated to contain up to 10,000 migrants is making its way to the U.S.-Mexico border.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

The Washington Post’s media critic went into meltdown after White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders held a mock press briefing for the children of White House journalists and employees on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

Erik Wemple, the newspaper’s chief media critic, slammed Sanders and the White House for organizing a fun day on Thursday for junior would-be journalists, while not holding an actual press conference for the record number of days.

WHITE HOUSE STAFF TO SKIP CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER AFTER LAST YEAR’S CONTROVERSY

Wemple wrote that Sanders gave to children an important lesson of “the centrality of nonaccountability mechanisms in the affairs of state” after she announced that the mock press briefing was “off the record.”

“When the children head home tonight, perhaps they can pull up archival footage to see how their questions stack up against ye olde press briefings,” he added.

“Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

“Tuesday, after all, marked a record for number of days without a White House press briefing. Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

While some correspondents praised the White House for doing “a lot of work to welcome the children and provide “them an excellent experience,” other journalists echoed Wemple’s criticism and pointed out that Sanders hasn’t held a press briefing in over 40 days.

“Kids of WH Press Corps members are getting ready for a briefing with  @PressSec. Their parents have not had one in 45 days,” tweeted CBS News’ White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang.

REPORTER SHOUTS AT SARAH SANDERS AFTER BRIEFING: ‘DO YOUR JOB, SARAH!’

“The irony of it is that they’re pretending that the White House press briefing is a thing, and they’re pretending that this is how the White House operates, but this is not at all how the White House operates … It’s a relic of an earlier time,” another correspondent quoted by the Post said.

The Post struck a different tune in a column earlier this year, which declared that despite the administration’s criticism of the media, President Trump was “extremely accessible.”

Wemple quoted Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project, who said that Trump held 338 “short question-and-answer” sessions over his time in office, significantly more than 75 such sessions by former President Barack Obama during his first full two years in office.
