Hillary Clinton compares ‘Game of Thrones’ to real life political drama

White walkers in the White House?

Hillary Clinton joked Thursday that “Game of Thrones” most closely resembles reality in politics during a speaking engagement with her husband, former president Bill Clinton, at the Beacon Theater in New York.

‘GAME OF THRONES’ STAR KIT HARINGTON TO USE JON SNOW STATUE AS A ‘SCARECROW’ FOR HIS VEGETABLE GARDEN

“Which is closer to the reality of life in politics? Which TV show? The West Wing or Veep?” the moderator asked Clinton. “Probably Game of Thrones”, the former 2016 Democratic presidential candidate said, pausing as the crowd roared in laughter before adding “at least in my experience.”

The HBO series "Game of Thrones" first aired in 2011 and has grown wildly popular over its seven-season span. Fans became hooked on the dramatic tales of royals committing incest, dragons, flawed kings and even zombie armies all vying for power. Its final season begins airing Sunday.

While Clinton’s extensive political career may fall a few dragons short of "Game of Thrones" level controversy, the former Secretary of State addressed other dramas she’s faced in her pursuit of her own Iron Throne, most notably her experience with disgraced WikiLeaks creator Julian Assange.

WikiLeaks was accused of affecting Clinton’s shot at the White House when the organization disseminated information from stolen internal communications at the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton presidential campaign in 2016.

Assange was arrested Thursday at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to be extradited to the U.S. where he faces conspiracy charges in stealing military secrets with Chelsea Manning, a former Army intelligence analyst who leaked classified documents to WikiLeaks.

Clinton is, therefore, no stranger to the cutthroat world of politics. the "Game of Thrones" final season, which will have a total of 13 episodes, kicks off Sunday.

The Latest on the fate of a Pennsylvania man who authorities say raped, murdered and dismembered his girlfriend's daughter (all times local):

2:30 p.m.

The mother of a slain 14-year-old girl says her daughter had a tendency to be a "very difficult child."

Sara Packer wore a red prison jumpsuit Wednesday as she took the stand in a sentencing hearing for her boyfriend who pleaded guilty in the 2016 rape, murder and dismemberment of Grace Parker. A jury outside Philadelphia must decide on a sentence of death or life without parole.

Sara Packer agreed to plead guilty in her adoptive daughter's murder in exchange for a life sentence.

She said Wednesday she has a psychology degree and an IQ over 140. She lost her job as an adoptions supervisor in 2010.

Prosecutors say she hated Grace and shared a rape-murder fantasy with Jacob Sullivan.

12:40 p.m.

The younger brother of a slain 14-year-old girl says the only way he can bear his loss is if adults know her story and then act to prevent child abuse.

A detective read Josh Packer's statement in court Wednesday as a jury considers the sentence for his sister's killer.

Forty-six-year-old Jacob Sullivan pleaded guilty in the 2016 rape, murder and dismemberment of Grace Packer. A jury outside Philadelphia must decide on a sentence of death or life without parole.

Grace's adoptive mother, Sara Packer, has agreed to plead guilty in her murder in exchange for a life sentence.

Josh Packer says if his sister was told she could save other kids' lives by giving her own, she would ask, "What do I have to do?"

Farrakhan claims to be Jesus in ‘Saviours’ Day’ address: ‘I am the Messiah’

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who has reportedly led a chant of "death to America" and recently called for a separate state for black Americans, has made more controversial comments, claiming to be Jesus and clarifying his "anti-termite" statement.

Farrakhan made many shocking claims during NOI's Saviours' Day keynote address in February at the United Center arena in Chicago. He told Rep. Ilhan Omar "you have nothing to apologize for," and he praised her fellow colleague freshman, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

LOUIS FARRAKHAN, NATION OF ISLAM LEADER, LEADS 'DEATH TO AMERICA' CHANT IN IRAN

The preacher of Islam then appeared to mock one of the most famous passages from the Bible, John 3:16:

"God does not love this world. God never sent Jesus to die for this world. Jesus died because he was 2,000 years too soon to bring about the end of the civilization of the Jews. He never was on a cross, there was no Calvary for that Jesus," Farrakhan said.

Instead, he said, Jesus's name would live until the one that came that he was prefigured for.

LOUIS FARRAKHAN CALLS FOR SEPARATE STATE FOR BLACK AMERICANS, SAYS THAT'S 'WHAT GOD WANTS'

"The real story is what I tried to tell you from the beginning. It didn’t happen back there. It’s happening right while you’re alive looking at it," Farrakhan told the audience. "I represent the Messiah. I represent the Jesus and I am that Jesus. If I am not, take my life."

Farrakhan said he makes the deaf hear and dumb speak, and he added: "when I made the call in 1995 to Black people, with the Million Man March, that was like Jesus calling Lazarus and Lazarus came forth."

He said the cross is for him.

"Some of you do today reject because the white man told you I’m an evil man, I’m a hater, I’m an anti-Semite. I hate Jewish people, I hate gay people. Here I am in front of you. I represent the Jesus that saves. I don’t represent somebody that came to judge you and me for our errors and mistakes…Everywhere I went I found myself rejected. My black people, they accepted me. But now white people are frightening the hell out of black people. College presidents are punished for allowing me or anyone that represents me to come on the college campus because they fear what’s in my mouth from my teacher the Honorable Elijah Muhammad."

TWITTER GIVES LOUIS FARRAKHAN A SLAP ON THE WRIST AFTER POSTING ANTI-SEMITIC 'SATANIC JEW' VIDEO

Farrakhan said the "anti-termite" reference was not to all Jews but "the richest 10 percent of Americans" who own "84 percent of all stocks."

Farrakhan has a long history of anti-Semitic comments. Last year, he lost his verified status on Twitter after posting a video in which he asked: "I wonder, will you see the Satanic Jew and the Synagogue of Satan, which has many races in it because Satan has deceived the whole world?" Farrakhan has also said that he is not an anti-Semite, but rather "anti-termite," and led a "Death to Israel" chant during a visit to Iran in November.

In January, Farrakhan posted a clip from a 2015 interview to Instagram in which he called for a separate nation-state for black Americans, saying: "Most of our people don't want it here ... God has something else for us."

U.S.-backed Syrian force still battling Islamic State

QAMISHLI, Syria (Reuters) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) battled Islamic State militants holed up in the Baghouz area overnight, supported by U.S.-led coalition air strikes, the SDF said, seeking to defeat the last pockets of jihadist resistance.

The SDF has been battling for weeks to defeat Islamic State at the Baghouz enclave in southeastern Syria at the Iraqi border, all that remained of the territory the militants ruled, which once spanned a third of Syria and Iraq.

While the U.S.-backed SDF has captured most of the area, Mustafa Bali, head of the SDF media office, told Reuters SDF fighters were clashing late on Thursday with IS militants in more than two positions where they were refusing to surrender.

The jihadists were holed up in what appeared to be caves in a rocky shelf overlooking Baghouz, and in trenches by the nearby Euphrates River, he said. U.S.-led coalition war planes had conducted two raids on Thursday evening against IS movements.

“Our forces are trying to force them to surrender, but so far the clashes are continuing,” Bali said.

Though the defeat of Islamic State at Baghouz ends its grip over populated territory, the group remains a threat, with fighters operating in remote territory elsewhere and capable of mounting insurgent attacks.

WTO chief sees difficult road for trade liberalization

The World Trade Organization sees a "challenging" and "difficult" road ahead for international trade liberalization due to the current political climate.

The WTO's director-general says he's confident Mexico and the United States can sort out their current trade difficulties, which include a border-crossing slowdown, U.S. threats to close the border and the still-pending ratification of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement.

But Roberto Azevedo said Thursday the fight to expand free trade "is going to be challenging, is going to be difficult, above all because of the political conditions we have in the world today."

Mexico's Economy Secretary said a slowdown on border crossing would affect U.S. consumers because "soon they won't find fresh vegetables on store shelves."

School threat system fields thousands of tips in first month

Pennsylvania's new mandatory threat reporting system for schools is drawing thousands of tips in its first month.

Officials say this week the Safe 2 Say Something program run by the attorney general's office fielded more than 4,900 reports since it was launched in early January.

The program passed the Legislature with near unanimity last year, mandating participation by all K-12 students in Pennsylvania. That includes charter, private and vocational-technical schools.

The reports come in through the phone, by email and via an app. They're fielded by a team at the attorney general's office in downtown Harrisburg.

Callers are assured of anonymity.

Similar programs are mandated in four other states. Officials say Pennsylvania is the first state to do a comprehensive launch of the program.

Catalan leader says Spanish PM might back down on independence vote

MADRID (Reuters) – A jailed Catalan separatist leader standing in Spain’s national election this month said on Thursday he expected Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to consider a possible referendum on the region’s independence to help secure a second term in office.

In a news conference from the Madrid prison where he is being held, Jordi Sanchez – his party’s top candidate in the April 28 ballot – suggested the likely need for coalition deals would spur his namesake to cooperate.

Sanchez is standing trial for sedition for his role in a failed independence bid in 2017, and the wealthy region’s undimmed ambition to split from Spain is among the most emotive campaign issues in the election.

Pedro Sanchez’s Socialists are expected to win the most seats, but will need support from one or more other party – possibly including the Catalan separatists – to form a parliamentary majority.

He has taken a more conciliatory tone towards political dialogue with Catalonia than his conservative predecessor.

But, along with other mainstream leaders in Madrid, he has consistently rejected the idea of an independence referendum or any unilateral secession bid, and hardened his position as the election campaign has heated up.

On Thursday, in an interview with radio station Onda Cero given after the Catalan leader’s comments, he reiterated that there would be “no referendum, no independence” for the region.

Jordi Sanchez, a member of exiled former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont’s PDeCAT party, said he thought political circumstances might persuade the outgoing prime minister – to whom he is not related – to have a rethink.

The secessionist movement would act on “the will that the citizens express themselves democratically at the ballot box, and we are convinced that sooner or later the Spanish Socialist party will accept this way,” Sanchez said.

Speaking to reporters via a videoconference organized by national news agency EFE, he said any other decision would “lead either to a permanent blockage (of the Catalonia independence debate) or pave the way for a government of the right.”

Opposition to Catalan independence has been a core rallying cry for the conservative People’s Party, center-right Ciudadanos and far-right Vox, which could potentially win enough seats combined to form a viable coalition.

Jordi Sanchez and three other jailed Catalan politicians said last week the separatists should be more flexible about entering negotiations with Madrid, provided a vote on independence remained an option.

During Thursday’s news conference he spoke mainly Catalan and sat in front of two symbols of Spanish unity: the red and yellow flag and a portrait of King Felipe.

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.

Hundreds of Cuban migrants are reported to be on the run Friday in Mexico after a crowd of more than 1,000 burst out of a troubled immigration detention center on its southern border.

Mexico’s National Immigration Institute said the mass escape Thursday in Tapachula – which the Associated Press called the largest in recent memory — involved around 1,300 Cuban migrants, although 700 of them have since returned voluntarily.

The migrants reportedly streamed out of the compound without any resistance, as the institute said its agents weren’t armed and “there was no confrontation.”

Federal police with riot shields later rushed in to control the situation, as a crowd of angry Cubans whose relatives were being held at the facility gathered outside. The Cubans claimed their relatives reported overcrowding and unsanitary conditions at the facility.

BORDER PATROL UNION CHIEF BLASTS CONGRESS OVER MIGRANT CARAVANS: ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT’?

“My wife and child have been in there for 27 days in bad conditions,” said Usmoni Velazquez Vallejo, as he waited outside for news. “There is overcrowding, insufficient food and there isn’t even medicine for them.”

Another Cuban detainee told the AFP: “We have many there… we are very tight, we sleep on the floor.”

It’s the third time since October that migrants at the facility staged an uprising, according to the news agency.

The center’s holding capacity is officially listed at less than 1,000 people, but the escape of 1,300 meant it was probably at least at double its capacity, since not everyone being held there escaped. Residents in the area said that sometimes the facility has held as many as 3,000 people, and a Mexican newspaper cited by Reuters said Haitians and Central Americans also are among the large group who still have not been tracked down.

Earlier in the day, Mexico’s top human rights official toured the facility.

Elsewhere in the country, a new caravan estimated to contain up to 10,000 migrants is making its way to the U.S.-Mexico border.

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

The Washington Post’s media critic went into meltdown after White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders held a mock press briefing for the children of White House journalists and employees on Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

Erik Wemple, the newspaper’s chief media critic, slammed Sanders and the White House for organizing a fun day on Thursday for junior would-be journalists, while not holding an actual press conference for the record number of days.

WHITE HOUSE STAFF TO SKIP CORRESPONDENTS’ DINNER AFTER LAST YEAR’S CONTROVERSY

Wemple wrote that Sanders gave to children an important lesson of “the centrality of nonaccountability mechanisms in the affairs of state” after she announced that the mock press briefing was “off the record.”

“When the children head home tonight, perhaps they can pull up archival footage to see how their questions stack up against ye olde press briefings,” he added.

“Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

“Tuesday, after all, marked a record for number of days without a White House press briefing. Accordingly, Sanders was doing more than just providing a fun interlude for the kids; she was headlining a reenactment, anchoring a bona fide historical site.”

While some correspondents praised the White House for doing “a lot of work to welcome the children and provide “them an excellent experience,” other journalists echoed Wemple’s criticism and pointed out that Sanders hasn’t held a press briefing in over 40 days.

“Kids of WH Press Corps members are getting ready for a briefing with  @PressSec. Their parents have not had one in 45 days,” tweeted CBS News’ White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang.

REPORTER SHOUTS AT SARAH SANDERS AFTER BRIEFING: ‘DO YOUR JOB, SARAH!’

“The irony of it is that they’re pretending that the White House press briefing is a thing, and they’re pretending that this is how the White House operates, but this is not at all how the White House operates … It’s a relic of an earlier time,” another correspondent quoted by the Post said.

The Post struck a different tune in a column earlier this year, which declared that despite the administration’s criticism of the media, President Trump was “extremely accessible.”

Wemple quoted Martha Joynt Kumar, director of the White House Transition Project, who said that Trump held 338 “short question-and-answer” sessions over his time in office, significantly more than 75 such sessions by former President Barack Obama during his first full two years in office.

In terms of total instances of access to the media, which include interviews, short sessions, and news conferences, Trump was accessible least 577 times in his first two years in office.
