Q-Poll: Va. Gov. Ralph Northam's Approval Takes Dive

Virginia Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam's approval ratings are under water in the wake of a blackface furor, but a plurality of voters want him to stay in office, a new poll showed.

The Quinnipiac University survey, released Wednesday found Northam's approval rating at 39 percent, with 44 percent disapproving. That compares with a June 2018 survey that showed him with a 49 percent approval rating and 25 percent disapproving.

Voters say 48 percent to 42 percent Northam should not resign, the survey found. The breakdown is 60 percent of GOP voters and 46 percent of white voters want Northam to step down, compared with a third of Democratic voters and 31 percent of black voters.

"The good news for Gov. Ralph Northam is that Virginia voters have mixed feelings about him – not terrible but hardly reassuring in the wake of the brouhaha over his alleged use of blackface when he was a medical student more than three decades ago," Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll said in a statement.

Northam initially faced calls to resign after the publication of a photo from his medical yearbook showing a person in blackface next to a person dressed as a member of the KKK. Northam first apologized, indicating he was pictured in the photo, then denied it was a photo of him —and admitted he had worn blackface on a different occasion.

As for Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, who is facing accusation of rape and sexual assault by two women, voters are divided 36-36 percent on whether he should resign, but say 54-24 percent he should not be impeached. He gets a negative 11-36 percent favorability rating, the poll found.

The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.

Media ‘obsessed’ with Trump, guests Tammy Bruce and Jeffrey Lord tell Laura Ingraham

Independent Women’s Voice President Tammy Bruce and former CNN contributor Jeffrey Lord called the mainstream media “obsessed” with President Trump and compared them to drug addicts avoiding rehab Friday while appearing on the “Ingraham Angle” to discuss the aftermath of the Mueller report release.

“At this point, with the clips you showed, it's turned into fan fiction. ... It's almost as if they know it's absolutely impossible. But they can't let it go. It's like that show, ‘Intervention,’ where the person starts to run across the parking lot because they don't want to get into the van to go to the airport to go to the rehab center,” Bruce said.

TRUMP CAMPAIGN GOES ON POST-MUELLER OFFENSIVE

“They've completely lost any sense of normalcy of any kind of sense of reality. They know it. They don't care. They just think, well, maybe this is going to be click bait and maybe some of our audience will come back.”

Ingraham played both Bruce and Lord a montage of CNN hosts and pundits talking about how the Mueller report release and results were a win for Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

TRUMP WORRIED MUELLER APPOINTMENT WOULD DISTRACT FROM HIS PRESIDENCY: 'THIS IS THE END. I'M F---ED'

“Let’s be clear this report is a gift to the government of Russia,” one CNN commentator said in the montage.

The Mueller report was released Thursday and showed investigators did not find evidence of collusion between the 2016 Trump presidential campaign and Russian operatives.

Lord said he believes the media is “obsessed” with President Trump and disappointed the report didn’t find evidence of collusion. He also said he believes the investigation into how the Russia investigation began will deliver the “real truth.”

“They're about to get the real truth with all of these deep-state people in the FBI and the Department of Justice who were colluding with members of the media to trap Donald Trump, to frame Donald Trump. And they were obsessed about it. They're still obsessed about it,” Lord said.

“They're so disappointed they didn't get him and they're going to try again. The only one they're going to get is themselves.”

Finland tops global happiness index for 2nd consecutive year

Finland has topped an index of the happiest nations for the second consecutive year, with researchers saying the small Nordic country has succeeded in generating a happiness recipe not simply dependent on economic wealth.

The World Happiness Report, produced by the U.N Sustainable Development Solutions Network, ranks 156 countries by how happy their citizens see themselves to be. It's based on factors including economic wealth, life expectancy, social support and freedom to make life choices.

The index, published Wednesday, showed the other Nordic countries did well, with Denmark, Norway and Iceland taking the next spots.

The United States dropped from the 18th to 19th place.

Happiness has declined the most drastically in the past ten years in the 108th placed Venezuela, currently in political crisis.

April 6, 2019

Tennessee Tech announced Saturday that it has hired John Pelphrey as its basketball coach.

Pelphrey served on Alabama’s coaching staff for the past three seasons. He was a former head coach at South Alabama (2002-07) and Arkansas (2007-11).

“It’s an honor and privilege to be at Tennessee Tech,” Pelphrey said in a school news release. “My family and I, and our staff, were looking for a place where we could go and learn, lead and take on challenges in college basketball. We’re very appreciative of (athletic director) Mark Wilson and his pursuit of us. We have complete confidence and trust in him.

“We love the alignment between him and President (Phil) Oldham and their vision for basketball at Tennessee Tech moving into the future, and we are very, very excited to be a part of that. We understand that there’s a lot of work to do, but we’re going to embrace that.”

Pelphrey, 50, replaces Steve Payne, who compiled a 118-134 in eight seasons. The Golden Eagles were just 8-23 this past season.

Pelphrey went 80-67 at South Alabama and made the NCAA Tournament in 2006 as his club finished 24-7. He went 20-12 the following season before departing for Arkansas.

The Razorbacks went 23-12 and made the NCAA Tournament in his first season (2007-08). But the team had losing campaigns the following two seasons and he went 69-59 in four seasons before being fired in March 2011.

Pelphrey played college basketball at Kentucky and averaged 11.0 points in 114 games (89 starts) over four seasons (1988-92).

Tennis: Del Potro knocked out in Delray Beach quarters, pulls out of Acapulco

February 23, 2019

(Reuters) – Top seed Juan Martin del Potro’s comeback from injury ended in the quarter-finals of the Delray Beach Open following a 6-4 3-6 7-6(5) defeat by American Mackenzie McDonald.

Del Potro, playing his first tournament since he injured his knee at the Shanghai Masters in October last year, played with a heavily strapped knee on Friday. He also pulled out of next week’s Mexican Open in Acapulco, a tournament he won last year.

“I wanted to do a big effort tonight. I fought until the last ball and had many opportunities, but it’s hard to win matches when you can’t move at 100 percent,” Del Potro, whose career has been blighted with injuries, told reporters.

“The doctors say I need time if I want to be 100 percent, but I don’t want to be home watching the tournaments on TV. I’ve done that before and it was really bad for me.

“I played three matches after four months away and that’s the best thing for me. I know how good I can be when I’m ready, but I’m not in the physical condition to play at this level yet.”

Del Potro fired 16 aces in the match but could not outlast the 23-year-old McDonald with his injured knee visibly slowing him down. The Argentine managed to defend two match points in the third set tiebreak before eventually bowing out.

It was McDonald’s biggest win of his career and the first over a player ranked in the top five, as he moved into his first ever ATP Tour semi-final where he will take on Moldovan Radu Albot.

AOC Ponders If It's Ethical to Have Kids Amid Climate Crisis

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., suggested it might not be ethical to have children, given the problems climate change will likely cause in the years to come.

In a live stream on her Instagram posted on Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez suggested to her 2.5 million followers the answer is not clear.

"There's scientific consensus that the lives of children are going to be very difficult – and it does lead young people, I think, to have a legitimate question: Is it OK to still have children?" she asked.

"Even if you don't have kids, there are still children still here, and we have a moral obligation . . . to leave a better world for them . . . a lack of urgency is going to kill us."

Ocasio-Cortez introduced the Green New Deal — a plan that would refocus the economy on renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuel and coal. The plan would also work to strengthen labor laws, healthcare, access to higher education, housing, and public ownership of certain institutions.

The proposal, which a GOP-aligned think tank has reportedly estimated could cost $93 trillion, follows release of UN report predicting we have only 12 years to limit or reverse the effects of climate change before its impact causes unmanageable drought, floods, extreme heat, and life-threatening weather events.

A number of Democratic presidential candidates have embraced the Green New Deal, including Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Cory Booker, D-N.J., Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

Following the proposal's introduction, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced the Senate will vote on a non-binding measure to force Democrats to go on the record with their support of the controversial plan.

BERLIN (Reuters) – Wulf Matthias will not stand for a second term as Wirecard’s chairman in 2020, German daily Handelsblatt said on Friday, citing sources in the financial industry.

For age reasons alone this would not be an option for Matthias, aged 75, Handelsblatt added.

Matthias will keep his mandate until it ends in 2020, the paper quoted a company spokeswoman as saying.

Wirecard was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.

ZURICH (Reuters) – Shareholders approved Credit Suisse’s 2018 compensation report with an 82 percent majority on Friday, overriding frustrations expressed at its annual general meeting over jumps in executive pay during a year its share price plummeted.

Three shareholder advisers had recommended investors vote against Switzerland’s second-biggest bank’s remuneration report, while a fourth backed the report but expressed reservations about whether management pay matched performance.

The approval marked a slight increase over the 80.8 percent support garnered for the bank’s 2017 compensation report.

LONDON (Reuters) – Activist investor Edward Bramson is likely to fail in his attempt to get a board seat at Barclays’ annual meeting next week, even though shareholders are dissatisfied with performance of the group’s investment bank.

New York-based Bramson’s Sherborne Investors and the board of the British bank have been sparring for months over Barclays’ strategy.

Bramson wants to scale back Barclays’ investment bank to reduce risk and boost shareholder returns. Barclays Chief Executive Jes Staley remains staunchly committed to growing the business out of trouble.

After failing to persuade Staley to change course since he began building a 5.5 percent stake in the bank in March last year, Bramson hopes a board seat will rachet up the pressure.

Both sides have written to shareholders pitching their case and Bramson has courted investors in one-on-one meetings, although none have publicly backed him yet.

Interviews by Reuters with five institutional investors in Barclays suggest Bramson has failed to persuade them.

Sherborne declined to comment.

Mirza Baig, head of investment stewardship at top-40 shareholder Aviva Investors, said Bramson was welcome on the bank’s register but the boardroom was a step too far.

“He has created a lot of value at other businesses, but, generally, when he has come in as executive chair and taken full control. This would be a different case where he would just be one lone voice on the board,” he said.

A second Barclays shareholder said he backed Bramson’s goal of improving returns but via an “evolutionary” approach.

“If you look at banks that have tried to restructure their operations in investment banking – you look at Natwest Markets, Deutsche Bank – I struggle to think of an example where a roughshod restructuring has been accretive to shareholder value.”

A third, top-30 investor said he had been impressed by incoming Chairman Nigel Higgins’ grasp of the challenge in hand, and felt investors would give him time.

“Management know they have to execute and deliver improved returns… [Higgins] will continue to re-shape the board but obviously he didn’t feel that having someone with a diametrically opposed view on it would be helpful.”

A fourth, top-30 investor agreed: “We voted for the chairman to come in and it would be crazy to allow an activist to join the board (at this time).”

Jupiter Fund Management, the 24th largest investor, said it also planned to vote against Bramson.

Barclays has nearly 500 institutional shareholders, Refinitiv data showed.

Since Staley joined Barclays in 2015, the investment bank returns relative to capital invested have increased but are still underperforming the overall business.

Barclays’ first-quarter figures showed the investment bank posted a 6 percent drop in income from its markets business and a 17 percent fall in banking advisory fees.

Returns in the investment bank fell to 9.5 percent from 13.2 percent a year ago.

Famed for successful campaigns against smaller British companies in sectors from chemicals to advertising, Bramson’s board seat pitch has been rebuffed by shareholder advisory firms.

Institutional Shareholder Services, the world’s biggest, said Bramson’s proposal “falls short of what can reasonably be expected from a shareholder trying to address issues at a 28 billion pounds, systemically important bank”.

Glass Lewis also flagged concern about Bramson’s lack of banking experience and “questionable” shareholding structure, referring to Sherborne’s use of derivative contracts to hedge losses should its strategy fail.

Critics said the arrangement meant his interests are not truly aligned with those of other long-term shareholders.

British advisory firm Pirc, however, said it recommended that investors abstain in the vote on Bramson’s proposal as a challenge to the board to do better in the year ahead – or face a similar contest in 2020.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.
