Conservative lawmakers praise the President’s decision to declare a National Emergency

Conservative lawmakers praise the President’s decision to declare a National Emergency

OAN Newsroom
UPDATED 10:27 AM PT — Friday, February 15, 2019

Top conservatives are praising the president’s decision to declare a National Emergency at the southern border.

Representative Mark Meadows tweeted Friday, saying he is seeing speculation Congress could override a presidential veto with GOP votes. However, he said that will not happen, because the votes aren’t there.

Meadows also said there is broad Republican and American support for the president to take legal action to protect families.

Meanwhile Representative Jim Jordan also chimed in by simply tweeting out “of course it’s a national emergency.” He then listed reasons why, which included caravans and angel families losing loved ones.

The lawmaker also asked what will it take for the left to acknowledge the crisis at the border.

Brunei urges tourism while at the same time implementing draconian Sharia Law

Culture. Heritage. Nature. Contemporary Asia. A distinctive, exciting, and undiscovered travel destination in Asia.

It sounds like a whimsical haven, and it is part of the marketing materials being issued by Brunei’s Tourism arm in a reinvigorated push to draw tourists to the tiny, oil-rich monarchy. Problem is, the glossy allure comes at the same time the country is being cast under an ugly international spotlight for implementing the harshest array of Sharia Law regulations.

“The four pillars of Brunei’s tourism products, these elements offer a unique blend of modern refinement, scenic culture, cultural reverence and majestic opulence for the discerning traveler,” the “Imagine Brunei” campaign continues. “With recent increases in manpower and expertise, including the hiring of international tourism consultants, and a clear strategy with ambitious but feasible goals, Brunei Tourism is working to market its undiscovered tourism potential in the competitive regional tourism market.”

BRUNEI INVOKES LAWS ALLOW STONING FOR GAY SEX, ADULTERY

Last month, the state-owned Royal Brunei Airlines announced that it would also be stepping up its the marketing push in the bid to entice tourists, according to travel site Skift.

But now that very airline has come under fire. On Wednesday, in the face of much international outcry and condemnation, Brunei’s ruler the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah went ahead and imposed the final phase of its barbaric Islamic penal code.

“There is much speculation that tourism will suffer. Already an Australian lobby group is pressing the government to revoke Royal Brunei Airlines’ landing rights in Australia, calling on Melbourne Airport to halt the acceptance of flights from Royal Brunei and for travel agents to stop selling the airline’s flights,” Benjamin Ryberg, director of research at The Lawfare Project, told Fox News.

Homosexuality has long been deemed illegal in Brunei and comes with a punishment of up to a decade behind bars, but the new, stricter legislation makes being gay, or convicted of adultery, a capital offense punishable by stoning. Moreover, those found guilty of stealing could also see their limbs chopped off.

VACATIONS ON THE EDGE: THE RISE OF THE WAR TOURISM INDUSTRY

Despite already having the death penalty on its books, the last time anyone was sent to the gallows was in 1957, human rights group The Brunei Project documented.

Analysts and inside sources told Fox News that the Sultan, now 72, wants to shore up his reputation as a devout Muslim leader and wants to ensure the 400,000-person nation doesn’t dip in delinquency in years to come.

While the new laws may have many potential Western tourists or investors running in the opposite direction, other reports suggest that the opening tourist and development market may very well find its feet – from China. Chinese companies are investing huge sums in the kingdom, according to the South China Morning Post.

BRUNEI'S CRACKDOWN ON HOMOSEXUALITY: WHY KINGDOM IS IMPLEMENTING DRACONIAN SHARIA LAW

China’s President Xi Jinping is said to have visited Brunei in November last year – marking the first time a Chinese leader had done so in over 13 years.

The government has continued to double-down on its decision despite the uproar, and in a statement said that sharia law “aims to educate, respect and protect the legitimate rights of all individuals.”

Neighboring and far poorer South East Asian nations such as Cambodia and Laos draw millions of visitors annually, as wealthy Brunei reportedly draws less than 300,000.

And despite resources being devoted to changing that, the new laws may only dash such dreams further.

Meanwhile, the Beverly Hills Hotel – owned by the Sultan – continues to come under the Hollywood wrath. A protest movement first ignited five years ago, in which scores of celebrities boycotted the gabled pink-and-white hotel, eventually withered only to reignited by George Clooney last week ahead of the law’s implementation.

Whether or not it will stick this time, remains to be seen. According to a source connected to the hotel, which falls under the Dorchester Collection of nine luxury hotels owned by Brunei’s investment wing, they have not yet been notified of any permit applications submitted to police for protesting.

Furthermore, a source connected to the Sultan says he is seemingly unperturbed by the hoopla.

“He has money, all his people are on free healthcare, free education, and the list goes on,” added the insider. “Do you think he cares about the mess here?”

GOP Sen. John Kennedy: 'No Sympathy' for 'Sleaze' Manafort

There was not any evidence of collusion with Russia in connection with President Donald Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort's conviction, but Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said Wednesday his offenses are still serious and he does not feel sorry for him.

"Mr. Manafort was convicted of bank fraud and tax fraud," Sen. Kennedy told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" before Manafort was to be sentenced in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. "There was no evidence of any collusion with Russia or any of that, but bank and tax fraud are serious offenses against the American people and he always played on the margins."

Further, Kennedy said he thinks he has called Manafort a "sleaze" in the past, and "he is. I don't have any sympathy for him."

Kennedy also said Wednesday he found revelations in testimony documents released by House Judiciary Committee Republicans from last year's questioning of former FBI attorney Lisa Page "disgusting."

"Ninety-nine percent of the men and women at the FBI and at Justice are good people," said Kennedy, "but you've got a 99 small minority over there, or you did, maybe you still do, most of them appear to be anti-Trump though I'm sure there are some anti-[Hillary] Clinton but they'll act from their political beliefs. Then they want to go out and sell books."

Deputy FBI Director Andy McCabe, in particular, "acts like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth," but everyone forgets he was fired for lying to the FBI, Kennedy said.

March 27, 2019

BEIJING (Reuters) – China has raised its standards for new energy vehicles (NEV) that qualify for subsidies and reduced the amount it is willing to provide to relevant companies, as it looks to wean the sector off government support.

The country rolled out a generous 5-year subsidy program for the NEV sector in 2016 to support sales and encourage innovation. But it has been slowly rolling back the program and plans to phase out subsidies after 2020 amid criticism that some firms have become overly reliant on the funds.

The Chinese finance ministry late on Tuesday said in a document on its website that it would cut the subsidy for battery electric cars with a range of 400 kilometers and above to 25,000 yuan ($3,720.07) per vehicle from 50,000 yuan in the next three months.

It also raised the standards for vehicles eligible for subsidies, saying that electric cars need to have a range of at least 250 kilometers, compared with 150 kilometers previously, according to the statement.

The ministry also said local governments should improve policies and stop offering some subsidies, but to support infrastructure construction such as that of electricity charging machines.

Shares in NEV makers such as BYD, BAIC BluePark, and battery suppliers like Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd fell between 1 percent and 2.5 percent on Wednesday even as the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges gained.

China’s NEV market has continued to grow significantly even as overall auto sales declined last year for the first time since the 1990s.

February 19, 2019

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Pop superstar and Oscar nominee Lady Gaga has split with her fiance, her second broken relationship in three years.

A representative for the 32-year-old Gaga on Tuesday confirmed celebrity media reports that the “Shallow” singer and Christian Carino, who is also her talent agent, had ended their engagement, but gave no details.

“It just didn’t work out. Relationships sometimes end,” an unidentified source told People magazine. “There’s no long dramatic story.”

News of the split came days before Sunday’s Oscar ceremony. Gaga is a best actress nominee for her role in the musical romance “A Star is Born.”

The singer will perform “Shallow” from “A Star is Born” on the Oscars telecast, which is seen as a front runner to win the Academy Award for best original song.

Gaga announced in October that she and Carino were engaged. They began dating in February 2017, a few months after she ended her five-year relationship with “Chicago Fire” actor Taylor Kinney.

Gaga and Carino had appeared close when they attended the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards in Los Angeles in January, but fans noticed she was not wearing her large engagement ring when she sang at the Grammy Awards on Feb. 10.

March 9, 2019

Aleksander Barkov set a franchise record with five assists, and MacKenzie Weegar and Mike Matheson scored twice each to lead the Florida Panthers to a 6-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Friday in Sunrise, Fla.

Panthers rookie goalie Sam Montembeault, making just his second NHL start, stopped 26 shots for his first win.

Jonathan Huberdeau and Mike Hoffman also scored for the Panthers. Florida’s top line — Barkov, Huberdeau and Evgenii Dadonov — combined for 12 points.

J.T. Brown and Marcus Foligno scored for Minnesota. Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk, who on Thursday shut out the best team in hockey, the Tampa Bay Lightning, lasted just one period, making four saves while allowing three goals. Alex Stalock entered and allowed three goals on 22 shots.

Jets 8, Hurricanes 1

Winnipeg scored three goals in the first 10 minutes on the way to a blowout win at Raleigh, N.C.

Andrew Copp scored twice, and Kevin Hayes, Blake Wheeler, Ben Chiarot, Nikolaj Elhers, Kyle Connor and Adam Lowry also had goals for the Jets, who delivered Carolina its most lopsided setback of the season.

The Jets have won three of their past four games. The Hurricanes, who got a goal from Greg McKegg, had a season-best six-game points streak snapped. Coupled with an overtime loss at Boston on Tuesday, they have dropped consecutive games for the first time in nearly two months.

Capitals 3, Devils 1

Andre Burakovsky, Nicklas Backstrom and Lars Eller each scored, and Braden Holtby finished with 25 saves as Washington extended its winning streak to six games with a victory over visiting New Jersey.

Burakovsky scored early in the first period, and Backstrom and Eller added their tallies in the third. Holtby improved to 6-1-0 in his past seven games.

New Jersey, which dropped its fifth consecutive game, got a 33-save performance from Mackenzie Blackwood.

Ducks 8, Canadiens 2

Adam Henrique scored twice, and rookie Troy Terry produced his second consecutive three-point game as host Anaheim handed Montreal a second loss in as many nights.

Goalie John Gibson stopped 35 shots for the Ducks, who got single goals from Terry, Corey Perry, Rickard Rakell, Devin Shore, Daniel Sprong and Max Jones (the first of his career). The eight goals were a season high for Anaheim, which went into the night the lowest-scoring team in the league.

Montreal netminder Carey Price was looking to supplant the legendary Jacques Plante for most wins among goaltenders in franchise history, but he remains at 314 victories after saving 21 of 29 shots. Paul Byron and Shea Weber (the 200th of his career) found the net for the Canadiens.

LONDON, April 26 – British factories stockpiled raw materials and goods ahead of Brexit at the fastest pace since records began in the 1950s, and they were increasingly downbeat about their prospects, a survey showed on Friday.

The Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) quarterly survey of the manufacturing industry showed expectations for export orders in the next three months fell to their lowest level since mid-2009, when Britain was reeling from the global financial crisis.

The record pace of stockpiling recorded by the CBI was mirrored by the closely-watched IHS Markit/CIPS purchasing managers’ index published earlier this month.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Fewer than half of Malaysians approve of Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, an opinion poll showed on Friday, as concerns over rising costs and racial matters plague his administration nearly a year after taking office.

The survey, conducted in March by independent pollster Merdeka Center, showed that only 46 percent of voters surveyed were satisfied with Mahathir, a sharp drop from the 71 percent approval rating he received in August 2018.

Mahathir’s Pakatan Harapan coalition won a stunning election victory in May 2018, ending the previous government’s more than 60-year rule.

But his administration has since been criticized for failing to deliver on promised reforms and protecting the rights of majority ethnic Malay Muslims.

Of 1,204 survey respondents, 46 percent felt that the “country was headed in the wrong direction”, up from 24 percent in August 2018, the Merdeka Center said in a statement. Just 39 percent said they approved of the ruling government.

High living costs remained the top most concern among Malaysians, with just 40 percent satisfied with the government’s management of the economy, the survey showed.

It also showed mixed responses to Pakatan Harapan’s proposed reforms.

Some 69 percent opposed plans to abolish the death penalty, while respondents were sharply divided over proposals to lower the minimum voting age to 18, or to implement a sugar tax.

“In our opinion, the results appear to indicate a public that favors the status quo, and thus requires a robust and coordinated advocacy efforts in order to garner their acceptance of new measures,” Merdeka Center said.

The survey also found 23 percent of Malaysians were concerned over ethnic and religious matters.

Some groups representing Malays have expressed fear that affirmative-action policies favoring them in business, education and housing could be taken away and criticized the appointments of non-Muslims to key government posts.

Last November, the government reversed its pledge to ratify a UN convention against racial discrimination, after a backlash from Malay groups.

Earlier this month, Pakatan Harapan suffered its third successive loss in local elections since taking power, which has been seen as a further sign of waning public support.

Despite the decline, most Malaysians – 67 percent – agreed that Mahathir’s government should be given more time to fulfill its election promises, Merdeka Center said.

This included a majority of Malay voters who were largely more critical of the new administration, it added.

(Reuters) – European shares slipped on Friday after losses in heavyweight banks and Glencore outweighed gains in healthcare and auto stocks, while investors remained on the sidelines ahead of U.S. economic data for the first quarter.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index was down 0.1 percent by 0935 GMT, eyeing a modest loss at the end of a holiday-shortened week. Banks-heavy Italian and Spanish indices were laggards.

The banking index fell for a fourth day, at the end of a heavy earnings week for lenders.

Britain’s Royal Bank of Scotland tumbled after posting lower first quarter profit, hurt by intensifying competition and Brexit uncertainty, while its investment bank also registered poor returns.

Weakness in investment banking also dented Deutsche Bank’s quarterly trading revenue and sent its shares lower a day after the German bank abandoned merger talks with smaller rival Commerzbank.

“The current interest rate environment makes it challenging for banks to make proper earnings because of their intermediary function,” said Teeuwe Mevissen, senior market economist eurozone, at Rabobank.

Since the start of April, all country indexes were on pace to rise between 1.8 percent and 3.4 percent, their fourth month of gains, while Germany was strongly outperforming with 6 percent growth.

“For now the current sentiment is very cautious as markets wait for the first estimates of the U.S. GDP growth which could see a surprise,” Mevissen said.

U.S. economic data for the first-quarter is due at 1230 GMT. Growth worries outside the United States resurfaced this week after South Korea’s economy unexpectedly contracted at the start of the year and weak German business sentiment data for April also disappointed.

Among the biggest drags on the benchmark index in Europe were the basic resources sector and the oil and gas sector, weighed down by Britain’s Glencore and France’s Total, respectively.

Glencore dropped after reports that U.S authorities were investigating whether the company and its subsidiaries violated certain provisions of the commodity exchange act.

Energy major Total said its net profit for the first three months of the year fell compared with a year ago due to volatile oil prices and debt costs.

Chip stocks in the region including Siltronic, Ams and STMicroelectronics lost more than 1 percent after Intel Corp reduced its full-year revenue forecast, adding to concerns that an industry-wide slowdown could persist until the end of 2019.

Meanwhile, healthcare, which is also seen as a defensive sector, was a bright spot. It was helped by French drugmaker Sanofi after it returned to growth with higher profits and revenues for the first-quarter.

Luxembourg-based satellite operator SES led media stocks higher after it maintained its full-year outlook on the back of the company’s Networks division.

Automakers in the region rose 0.4 percent, led by Valeo’s 6 percent jump as the French parts maker said its performance would improve in the second half of the year.

Continental AG advanced after it backed its outlook for the year despite reporting a fall in first-quarter earnings.

Renault rose more than 3 percent as it clung to full-year targets and pursues merger talks with its Japanese partner Nissan.

(Reuters) – The “i word” – impeachment – is swirling around the U.S. Congress since the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s redacted Russia report, which painted a picture of lies, threats and confusion in Donald Trump’s White House.

Some Democrats say trying to remove Trump from office would be a waste of time because his fellow Republicans still have majority control of the Senate. Other Democrats argue they have a moral obligation at least to try to impeach, even though Mueller did not charge Trump with conspiring with Russia in the 2016 U.S. election or with obstruction of justice.

Whether or not the Democrats decide to go down this risky path, here is how the impeachment process works.

WHAT ARE GROUNDS FOR IMPEACHMENT?

The U.S. Constitution says the president can be removed from office by Congress for “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” Exactly what that means is unclear.

Before he became president in 1974, replacing Republican Richard Nixon who resigned over the Watergate scandal, Gerald Ford said: “An impeachable offense is whatever a majority of the House of Representatives considers it to be at a given moment in history.”

Frank Bowman, a University of Missouri law professor and author of a forthcoming book on the history of impeachment, said Congress could look beyond criminal laws in defining “high crimes and misdemeanors.” Historically, it can encompass corruption and other abuses, including trying to obstruct judicial proceedings.

HOW DOES IMPEACHMENT PLAY OUT?

The term impeachment is often interpreted as simply removing a president from office, but that is not strictly accurate.

Impeachment technically refers to the 435-member House of Representatives approving formal charges against a president.

The House effectively acts as accuser – voting on whether to bring specific charges. An impeachment resolution, known as “articles of impeachment,” is like an indictment in a criminal case. A simple majority vote is needed in the House to impeach.

The Senate then conducts a trial. House members act as the prosecutors, with senators as the jurors. The chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court presides over the trial. A two-thirds majority vote is required in the 100-member Senate to convict and remove a president from office.

No president has ever been removed from office as a direct result of an impeachment and conviction by Congress.

Nixon quit in 1974 rather than face impeachment. Presidents Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998 were impeached by the House, but both stayed in office after the Senate acquitted them.

Obstruction of justice was one charge against Clinton, who faced allegations of lying under oath about his relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Obstruction was also included in the articles of impeachment against Nixon.

CAN THE SUPREME COURT OVERTURN?

No.

Trump said on Twitter on Wednesday that he would ask the Supreme Court to intervene if Democrats tried to impeach him. But America’s founders explicitly rejected making a Senate conviction appealable to the federal judiciary, Bowman said.

“They quite plainly decided this is a political process and it is ultimately a political judgment,” Bowman said.

“So when Trump suggests there is any judicial remedy for impeachment, he is just wrong.”

PROOF OF WRONGDOING?

In a typical criminal court case, jurors are told to convict only if there is “proof beyond a reasonable doubt,” a fairly stringent standard.

Impeachment proceedings are different. The House and Senate “can decide on whatever burden of proof they want,” Bowman said. “There is no agreement on what the burden should be.”

PARTY BREAKDOWN IN CONGRESS?

Right now, there are 235 Democrats, 197 Republicans and three vacancies in the House. As a result, the Democratic majority could vote to impeach Trump without any Republican votes.

In 1998, when Republicans had a House majority, the chamber voted largely along party lines to impeach Clinton, a Democrat.

The Senate now has 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents who usually vote with Democrats. Conviction and removal of a president would requires 67 votes. So that means for Trump to be impeached, at least 20 Republicans and all the Democrats and independents would have to vote against him.

WHO BECOMES PRESIDENT IF TRUMP IS REMOVED?

A Senate conviction removing Trump from office would elevate Vice President Mike Pence to the presidency to fill out Trump’s term, which ends on Jan. 20, 2021.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s lawyers on Friday are set to ask a Florida judge to toss out hidden-camera videos that prosecutors say show the 77-year-old billionaire receiving sexual favors for money inside a Florida massage parlor.

The owner of the reigning Super Bowl champions plans wants the video to not be used as evidence against him as he contests two misdemeanor counts of soliciting prostitution at the Orchids of Asia Spa in Jupiter, Florida, along with some two dozen other men.

His legal team is fresh off a win on Tuesday, when they successfully persuaded Palm Beach County Judge Leonard Hanser to block prosecutors from releasing the hidden-camera footage to media outlets, which had requested copies under the state’s robust open records law.

Kraft, who has owned the franchise since 1994, pleaded not guilty, but has issued a public apology for his actions.

His attorneys have argued in court papers that the surreptitious videotaping of customers, including Kraft, inside a massage parlor was governmental overreach and the result of an illegally obtained search warrant.

The warrant, Kraft’s lawyers claim, was secured under false pretenses because police officers cited human trafficking as a potential crime in their application. Prosecutors have since acknowledged that the investigation yielded no evidence of trafficking.

Palm Beach County prosecutors in a court filing on Wednesday said Kraft’s motion should be rejected because he could not have had any expectation of privacy while visiting a commercial establishment to engage in criminal activity.

That prompted an indignant response from Kraft’s attorneys, who said the prosecution’s position on privacy was “unhinged.”

“It should go without saying that Mr. Kraft and everyone else in the United States have a reasonable expectation that the government will not secretly spy on them while they undress behind closed doors,” they wrote.
