Mom arrested after pulling up to hospital with dead daughter

Sheriff's investigators say a woman pulled up to a hospital in Orlando asking for help for her 11-year-old daughter, but she was already dead from multiple stab wounds.

Then, they say she pulled a knife on hospital workers.

Officials say 28-year-old Rose Alcides Rivera was arrested Sunday morning and charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Aleyda Rivera.

Hospital workers told investigators the mother became "argumentative" with hospital staff before producing a knife. Hospital security detained her.

The Orlando Sentinel reports Winnie Palmer Hospital was briefly locked down and the main entrance remained closed during the incident.

Officials are trying to determine when and where the child was killed.

U.S. senators introduce social media bill to ban ‘dark patterns’ tricks

April 13, 2019

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Two U.S. senators introduced a bill on Tuesday to ban online social media companies like Facebook Inc and Twitter Inc from tricking consumers into giving up their personal data.

The bill from Mark Warner, a Democrat, and Deb Fischer, a Republican, would also ban online platforms with more than 100 million monthly active users from designing addicting games or other websites for children under age 13.

The bill takes aim at practices that online platforms use to mislead people into giving personal data to companies or otherwise trick them. The so-called “dark patterns” were developed using behavioral psychology.

“Misleading prompts to just click the ‘OK’ button can often transfer your contacts, messages, browsing activity, photos, or location information without you even realizing it,” Fischer said in a statement issued by both senators.

Restrictions on how social media companies collect information about users could hurt their ability to sell advertisements, a key source of profit.

A website aimed at tracking dark patterns identifies behavior, such as a website or app showing that a user has new notifications when they do not.

Warner said in an interview on CNBC that the legislation could be included in a federal privacy bill that lawmakers in the Senate Commerce Committee are drafting. Congress has been expected to take up privacy legislation after California passed a strict privacy law that goes into effect next year.

Warner noted that Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, Google and others have expressed support for privacy regulation.

“The platform companies are now going to have an opportunity to put their money where their mouth is, to see if they support this legislation and other approaches,” he said.

The bill would bar companies from choosing groups of people for behavioral experiments unless the companies get informed consent.

Under the terms of the bill, social media companies would create a professional standards body to create best practices to deal with the issue. The Federal Trade Commission, which investigates deceptive advertising, would work with the group.

Facebook, Google, Twitter and other free online services rely on advertising for revenue, and use data collected on users to more effectively target those ads.The story refiles to fix typographical error in last paragraph to make it “rely” instead of “relay”

Rush Limbaugh: Biden is Democrats’ best chance at beating Trump … but he has no chance because of Dems

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here's a look at what you need to know today ...

Rush Limbaugh: Joe Biden is Democrats' best chance at beating Trump, but ...

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh said Tuesday that former Vice President Joseph Biden is the Democrats' best chance to defeat President Trump in 2020 but has no chance to win the primary. "Here's the thing: Joe Biden is probably the best chance they've got, and he doesn't have a chance. They're probably -- Joe Biden? And crazy Bernie [Sanders]? And Mayor Pete [Buttigieg]? Three white guys, two of them are brontosauruses from 'Jurassic Park,' and that isn't going to sit well with the rest of this party, which has gone so far left," Limbaugh said on "The Story with Martha MacCallum." Limbaugh also said Biden may not be fully committed to running in 2020. Biden's long-awaited 2020 presidential bid announcement has been pushed back from Wednesday to Thursday. (Watch Limbaugh's interview above.)

Bernie Sanders' call to let prisoners vote sparks heated debate - and an about-face from a rival
From Meghan McCain and Whoopi Goldberg on "The View" to Cher on Twitter, 2020 presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders caused quite a stir when he said during a CNN town hall Monday that convicted criminals in prison, including Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and rapists, should be allowed to vote. McCain seemed flabbergasted that Goldberg agreed with Sanders. Cher, an unapologetic celebrity liberal icon, blasted Sanders so thoroughly on Twitter that Donald Trump Jr. welcomed her to the Republican Party. The backlash appears to have caused potential 2020 rival, U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., to rethink her views. After initially saying “we should have that conversation” about allowing criminals currently in prison to vote, Harris appeared to be backtracking, saying Tuesday that criminals such as murderers and terrorists should be deprived of their right to vote.

White House fights Democrats' subpoenas, requests for Trump's tax records
The White House will fight House Democrats' subpoena of testimony and documents from ex-White House counsel Don McGahn, Fox News is told -- and almost immediately, House Judiciary Committee chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y, characterized the move as "one more act of obstruction" by the Trump administration. The brewing fight over the McGahn subpoena was poised to set up a series of other contentious legal showdowns as Democrats seek to publicly question more current and former Trump aides who were featured prominently in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report on the Russia investigation. In addition, Carl Kline, a former White House personnel security director subpoenaed by Democrats, did not show up Tuesday for a scheduled deposition. To make matters worse between Democrats and the Trump White House, the administration defied a demand from Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., to turn over six years of Trump's tax returns. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin asked for more time and said he would give the panel a final decision by May 6.

Wall Street hopes for momentum after a super Tuesday
All eyes will be on Wall Street on Wednesday after stocks closed at a new all-time high on Tuesday, as better-than-expected quarterly profits from some of the largest companies encouraged investors. The S&P 500 hit an all-time high, marking the stock market's complete recovery from a nosedive at the end of last year. The benchmark index's previous record was set last September, shortly before the market sank in the fourth quarter amid fears of a recession, an escalating trade war between the U.S. and China, and concern the Federal Reserve was moving too aggressively to raise interest rates. Still, shares were mostly lower in Asia on Wednesday as the rally on Wall Street ran out of steam. Investors seemed unswayed by the S&P 500's performance.

What is ... another new 'Jeopardy!' record?
"Jeopardy!" champ James Holzhauer has just broken another record. On Tuesday's episode, the 34-year-old surpassed $1 million in the shortest time ever. His $118,816 win put his total take at $1,061,554 million after 14 games. This is the third separate record Holzhauer has shattered since he started competing on the game show. Last Wednesday, he won the episode with a total of $131,127, topping the one-day record he set earlier in his run of $110,914.

Sen. Jerry Moran on Julian Assange: ‘I don’t see him as a hero, he broke the law’

After WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested by British police Thursday, U.S. Senator Jerry Moran said: “I don’t see him as a hero, he broke the law.”

Speaking on "America’s Newsroom" Thursday he added: “People who break the law, if they're convicted, then they need to pay the price.”

Assange has been in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since 2012 when British courts ordered the 47-year-old Australian native extradited to face questioning in a sexual assault case. That matter has since been dropped, but Wikileaks, an anti-secrecy site, is facing a federal grand jury investigation over its publication of American diplomatic and military secrets during the Iraq War.

WIKILEAKS FOUNDER JULIAN ASSANGE ARRESTED AFTER ECUADOR WITHDRAWS ASYLUM

Moments before he was arrested, Ecuador announced it had withdrawn Assange's asylum for “repeatedly violating international conventions and protocol.”

“When I learned this news this morning, it was a sense that maybe justice will occur. I don't know exactly what that justice will be but the idea that we'll have the opportunity to question and for Julian Assange to have to stand for the charges that he’s been – allegedly, the things he’s done, I think that’s a good thing,” said Moran, R-Kan., Thursday. “One is justice, the other thing is that we'll get some information particularly about Russian involvement in the election.”

Moran later said he would consider Assange a “villain” if he is convicted of a crime.

On “America’s Newsroom”, Moran also talked about his reaction to Attorney General William Barr stating under oath that “spying did occur” on the Trump campaign ahead of the 2016 election.

MEDIA TAKE ISSUE WITH AG BARR FOR SAYING 'SPYING DID OCCUR' ON TRUMP CAMPAIGN

On Wednesday, Barr told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing, "I think spying did occur, yes. I think spying did occur. The question was whether it was adequately predicated. And I'm not suggesting it wasn't predicated. I need to explore that.”

“Those who are critics of the president, those who are perhaps critics of the attorney general are overemphasizing the word ‘spying,’” said Moran. “I think the attorney general made it clear. I was in the room, I was with the attorney general for about two hours. My takeaway is, what he was talking about was the efforts that commenced this investigation, were they based upon legal authority?”

He added that Barr made clear that he was concerned, “that something may have happened that was inappropriate and the question is, did that occur? That's a very valid request of an attorney general to find out what the facts are. And this kind of overreaction to the word ‘spying’ seems to me just to be about partisan politics. Let's find out what the facts are.”

Moran also said a lot of people have been “demanding answers about the Trump campaign involvement with the Russian interference in our election.”

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

He said: “We want answers. I think the same thing applies here. The people who are wanting those answers ought to want answers in this issue of the investigation and whether unpredicted, as the attorney general might say, spying occurred. In other words, unauthorized, illegal. Something without a warrant.”

Report: Methodist Leaders Reject Easing Same-Sex Restrictions

United Methodist Church leaders have rejected a measure that would have eased restrictions on gay clergy and same-sex marriages, NPR reported.

Delegates twice voted against the "One Church" plan at a special session of the church's General Conference in St. Louis, the news outlet reported.

The delegates were responding to a 2018 report from a special church commission on revising the Methodists' guiding Book of Discipline.

When it formed the commission, the Council of Bishops said it had heard many criticisms that the Book of Discipline "contains language which is contradictory, unnecessarily hurtful, and inadequate for the variety of local, regional and global contexts."

The conference also comes as an increasing number of Methodist clergy have come out as gay, NPR reported.

"They said they have not heard this message before," Jeffrey Warren, a young gay delegate from the Upper New York Conference, told delegates on Monday, NPR reported. "They didn't know God could love them, because their churches said God didn't."

Speaking against the plan was Nancy Denardo, a laity delegate of western Pennsylvania, who cited the Bible's mention of marriage as being between a man and woman.

"The One Church plan does not agree with the words of our savior," Denardo said, warning it "deceives young persons into believing that same-gender marriage is OK with God — when clearly it is not."

"The word became flesh — not the flesh becomes the word," Denardo said. She added, "I'm truly sorry if the truth of the Gospel hurts anyone."

Rev. Byron Thomas of North Georgia compared the dilemma to the church's earlier handling of race.

"In 1939, the UMC was trying to figure out what to do with black people," Thomas said, as quoted by the Iowa Methodist conference. "At that GC, the Central Jurisdiction was voted into being. The late Bishop Thomas wrote that the white folks stood up and clapped, and the black folks sat down and cried."

"I believe we are at another stand up and clap, sit down and cry moment," Thomas was quoted as saying.

The United Methodist Church claims about 12.6 million members worldwide, including nearly 7 million in the U.S. While other mainline Protestant denominations, such as the Episcopal and Presbyterian (U.S.A.) churches, have embraced the two gay-friendly practices, the Methodist church still officially bans them, even though acts of defiance by pro-LGBT clergy have multiplied and talk of a possible breakup has intensified.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s a look at what you need to know today …

EXCLUSIVE: Trump says ‘Sleepy Joe’ Biden doesn’t have what it takes

President Trump, in a wide-ranging, exclusive phone interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, dismissed the launch of former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Biden, the president said, has name recognition but he won’t “be able to do the job.” When asked about Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Trump criticized his record, saying Sanders had “misguided energy” and asserted that Sanders “talks a lot” but hasn’t accomplished anything. The president referred to former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas as “a fluke” who had lost much momentum and outright dismissed Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg — although he said he was “rooting” for Buttigieg. (Trump could address Biden and the other Democratic presidential candidates when he speaks today before the National Rifle Association.)

The Democratic Party’s youth movement: Biden’s biggest challenge?
Former Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Howard Dean warned Joe Biden about the troubles he may face in his presidential campaign, especially from the “35-year-olds” who Dean says have been running the party — a clear nod to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and fellow freshmen Democrats. “This is a very different party than even the party Joe Biden ran in in 2012. Very different,” Dean continued. “A lot of people could win this race. There’s 20 people in there. I think it’s going to take $20 million to get to the starting line. If you can’t raise $20 million, you’re gone, and I think that’s going to take care of about six or eight of these folks. … But it is not the same party that it was five years ago.” A progressive political group that boosted Ocasio-Cortez’s bid for Congress last year vowed to oppose Biden and blasted him as part of the “old guard.”

More tales from the FBI texts
Text messages between former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page indicate they discussed using briefings to the Trump team after the 2016 election to identify people they could “develop for potential relationships,” track lines of questioning and “assess” changes in “demeanor” – language one GOP lawmaker called “more evidence” of irregular conduct in the original Russia probe. Fox News has learned the texts, initially released in 2018 by a Senate committee, are under renewed scrutiny, with GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley and Homeland Security Committee chair Ron Johnson sending a letter Thursday night to Attorney General Bill Barr pushing for more information on the matter. President Trump, speaking on Fox News’ “Hannity” Thursday night, responded to this report by accusing Strzok and Page of an attempted “coup.” “They were trying to infiltrate the administration,” he said.

Kim accuses US of acting in ‘bad faith’
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, fresh off his summit with  Russian President Vladimir Putin, said the U.S. has been acting in “bad faith” since his Hanoi meeting with President Trump over the stalemated issue of North Korean denuclearization. The North Korean leader told the Korean Central News Agency that, “the situation on the Korean Peninsula and the region is now at a standstill and has reached a critical point,” the Straits Times of Singapore reported. Kim warned that the situation “may return to its original state as the U.S. took a unilateral attitude in bad faith at the recent second DPRK-US summit talks,” the Korean Central News Agency added.

NFL Draft 2019: It’s all about defense
The first round of the 2019 NFL Draft saw a run on defensive players, with eight of the top 12 picks in Nashville coming from that side of the ball. After Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was taken first overall by the Arizona Cardinals, the San Francisco 49ers started a run of four straight front-seven players by taking Ohio State defensive end Nick Bosa with the second overall pick — the highest draft slot for any Buckeye since left tackle Orlando Pace went No. 1 overall to the St. Louis Rams in 1997.

Joe Biden’s brain surgeon said his former patient is “totally in the clear” as speculation over the candidate’s health — with Biden possibly becoming the oldest president in U.S. history — is likely to become a campaign issue.

The former vice president, who had been perceived by many as the strongest potential contender for the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential nomination, formally announced his candidacy Thursday.

But Biden’s age – 76 – is expected to become a source of attacks from a younger generation of Democrats not because of obvious generational differences, but possibly for actual health concerns if Biden gets into office.

WHY THE MEDIA ARE CONVINCED JOE BIDEN WILL IMPLODE

Biden himself agreed last year that “it’s totally legitimate” for people to ask questions about his health if he decides to run for president, given his medical history — which has included brain surgery in 1988.

“I think they’re gonna judge me on my vitality,” Biden told “CBS This Morning.” “Can I still run up the steps of Air Force Two? Am I still in good shape? Am I – do I have all my faculties? Am I energetic? I think it’s totally legitimate people ask those questions.”

But Dr. Neal Kassell, the neurosurgeon who operated on Biden for an aneurysm three decades ago, told the Washington Examiner that Biden appears to be “totally in the clear” — and even joked that the operation made Biden “better than how he was.”

“Joe Biden of all of the politicians in Washington is the only one that I’m certain has a brain, because I have seen it,” Kassell said. “That’s more than I can say about all the other candidates or the incumbents.”

At the same time, however, Biden hasn’t been forthcoming about his health at least since 2008 when he released his medical records as a vice presidential candidate. The disclosure that time revealed some fairly minor issues such as an irregular heartbeat in addition to detailing previous operations, including removing a benign polyp during a colonoscopy in 1996, the outlet reported.

It remains unclear if Biden had more aneurysms. Some medical experts say that people who have had an aneurysm can have another one.

An aneurysm, or a weakening of an artery wall, can lead to a rupture and internal bleeding, potentially placing a patient’s life in jeopardy.

Biden won’t be the only Democrat grappling with old age. Sen. Bernie Sanders, another 2020 frontrunner, is currently 77 years old and agreed with Biden last year that their ages will be an issue in the race.

“It’s part of a discussion, but it has to be part of an overall view of what somebody is and what somebody has accomplished,” Sanders told Politico.

“Look, you’ve got people who are 50 years of age who are not well, right? You’ve got people who are 90 years of age who are going to work every day, doing excellent work. And obviously, age is a factor. But it depends on the overall health and wellbeing of the individual.”

German carmaker Daimler endured a weak start to the year, echoing troubles at other major manufacturers, as sales in the big Chinese market stuttered.

The company said Friday that its net income fell to 2.1 billion euros ($2.3 billion) in the first quarter from 2.3 billion euros during the same period a year earlier, while revenue dipped to 39.7 billion euros from 39.8 billion euros.

Vehicle sales fell 4% to 773,800 units, with a double-digit percentage drop in China offsetting gains in other markets like the U.S. and Europe.

The company said there were also problems with high inventories and bottlenecks in the supply chain.

Chairman Dieter Zetsche said that “we cannot and will not be satisfied with this — as expected — moderate start to the year.”
