California mom, daughter chases down, wrestles burglary suspect: report

Talk about picking the wrong house.

Authorities in Granite Bay, Calif., on Sunday said a mother and daughter duo chased down a burglary suspect and wrestled him after they drove up to their home and saw that it had been ransacked, reports said.

Julie Rux told Fox 5 San Diego that she did not think twice about giving him chase, but admitted it “was probably not the smartest thing to do” after police told her he was armed at the time with a.38 he lifted from her home.

The suspect was identified as Richard Holesapple, who police said managed to escape the mother-daughter duo. He was arrested hours later in the area, the report said. Authorities said he left his backpack at her home and the backpack had an ID.

Man arrested in death of nanny found dead in New Jersey park after jog, prosecutors say

A man was arrested Sunday in the death of a nanny who was found murdered in a New Jersey park after going for a jog last week, prosecutors said.

Jorge Rios was taken into custody a week after authorities found Carolina Cano’s body dumped in a lake at Jersey City’s Lincoln Park, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office tweeted Sunday. Authorities are expected to release more information on the arrest later in the day.

The 45-year-old nanny went for a jog about 5:30 a.m. last Sunday and never returned home, Cano’s roommate told NBC New York. By 7:30 a.m., authorities found Cano’s body in the park’s lake, not far from where she lived, and she was pronounced dead two hours later.

"She was a working woman, a good woman," her roommate told the news station. "She didn’t bother anyone. She was a woman that was always with God, that’s how she lived. She was really a beautiful woman. She had a very beautiful heart."

The medical examiner discovered marks around Cano’s neck that indicated she was strangled, sources told NBC New York.

The roommate said Cano was from Peru and lived in her Jersey City apartment for two years prior to her death.

"It has affected us so much because it happened so suddenly," Cano’s roommate said. "It didn't happen because she was sick, it happened from one moment to the next."

UN extends experts monitoring North Korea sanctions

The U.N. Security Council has voted unanimously to extend the mandate of the U.N. panel of experts monitoring sanctions on North Korea, with Russia urging that panel members "correct" the negative impact of the tough measures on the lives of ordinary citizens.

Adoption of the resolution was delayed until Wednesday over Russia's demands that the committee address the humanitarian impact of sanctions.

Deputy Russian ambassador Vladimir Safronkov said after the vote to extend the experts' mandate until April 24, 2020, that the panel must quickly address "the negative impact of sanctions," especially on women and children.

Britain's deputy political coordinator, David Clay, says North Korea and some countries "seek to blame sanctions for the humanitarian situation." He blames the problems on North Korea's policies, including diverting money to nuclear weapons.

Man convicted of killing woman out running in NYC park

A man has been convicted of killing a woman out running near her New York City home, in a case that stirred urban fears.

A Queens jury delivered its verdict Monday night in Chanel (shuh-NEHL') Lewis' retrial, convicting him of murder in Karina Vetrano's death. A previous trial ended in a hung jury.

Vetrano's father found her body, sexually abused and strangled, in a park in August 2016. She was 30.

Lewis was arrested six months later. Authorities said his DNA was found on Vetrano, and he confessed, saying he was upset at someone else and "lost it" when he saw Vetrano. He said he strangled her but didn't sexually abuse her.

Lewis' defense questioned the DNA evidence and said the confession was coerced and didn't match Vetrano's injuries.

Belgium gears up for economic hit from hard Brexit

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Belgium’s economy would contract nearly 1 percent and Belgians would become poorer if Britain crashes out of the European Union in a chaotic way, a central bank official said on Thursday.

Belgium, whose North Sea ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge are the gateway for large amounts of goods trade with the United Kingdom, is one of the EU countries most exposed to the impact of Brexit.

“The national bank estimates the economic cost of a hard Brexit at 0.9 percent of GDP,” Hand Geeroms, the central bank’s senior EU policy adviser told a news conference afterwards.

“The most optimistic scenario gives a loss in purchasing power of 0.4 percent. The most pessimistic scenario gives a loss in purchasing power of 2.5 percent.”

“This is the price Belgians will pay for a decision of the British people to leave the single market,” he said.

Exports to Britain from Belgium’s northern region of Flanders, which account for 87 percent of the country’s total exports to the UK, come to roughly 28 billion euros per year. That is not much lower than the UK-bound exports from France.

Some 4,000 containers head for the UK from Zeebrugge every day, and Belgium is hiring hundreds of customs officials for its ports.

Leuven university has previously estimated that a no-deal Brexit could lead to 28,000 job losses in the country of 11.5 million people.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel told the news conference his government was pushing ahead with preparations for such a scenario.

“But I also say clearly that I know we will face problems. It won’t be a walk in the park. We know that very well,” he added.

For now, Belgium and the other EU states staying on together are left guessing the eventual outcome of Brexit, with options still ranging from a disruptive no-deal to a long delay or even a reversal of Brexit.

The EU has given Britain until April 12 to decide on its next steps if it cannot ratify this week the divorce deal that Prime Minister Theresa May finished negotiating with the bloc last November.

Arkansas fired head coach Mike Anderson on Tuesday following an 18-16 season, ending his eight-year tenure as head coach and his 25 years with the program.

“After a review of the program, including an analysis of the past eight years and a look forward, I have made a decision that a change in leadership will best position our men’s basketball program for future success,” athletic director Hunter Yurachek said in a prepared statement. “In the past eight seasons, we have won a number of games and have made appearances in both the NIT and the NCAA Tournaments.

“However, in my evaluation, we have not sustained a consistent level of success against the most competitive teams in the nation to enable us to compete for SEC and NCAA Championships on an annual basis. That will continue to be the benchmark for our success throughout our athletic program.”

Yurachek said a national search for the next coach will begin immediately. Associate head coach Melvin Watkins will lead the program until a coach is hired.

Anderson, 59, was named head coach in March 2011, replacing John Pelphrey, who was fired. In eight seasons, Anderson compiled a 169-102 record

His hiring was a return home for Anderson, who was on the Razorbacks staff for 17 seasons (1985-2002) before becoming head coach at UAB (2002-06) and Missouri (2006-11).

Overall, his teams were 369-200 and made nine appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The Razorbacks played in three NCAA tournaments (2015, 2017 and 2018) and in the NIT twice (2014, 2019) under Anderson’s leadership.

Arkansas’ season ended Saturday with a 63-60 loss to top-seeded Indiana in the second round of the NIT.

Fort Smith, Ark.-based KFSM-TV reported Tuesday that the Razorbacks bought out Anderson’s contract, which had three years remaining, and will pay him $3 million.

Four Southeastern Conference teams now have openings: Arkansas, Alabama, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt.

Futures muted with U.S.-China trade negotiations in focus

(Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures treaded water on Thursday, as investors awaited more details on the progress in U.S.-China trade negotiations amid lingering fears of slowing economic growth.

A Reuters report said China has made unprecedented proposals on a range of issues including forced technology transfer, though sticking points still remained and there was no definite timetable for a deal.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer looked forward to “productive meetings” as they arrived in Beijing leading a delegation for trade talks.

Meanwhile, Wall Street continued to be in the grip of global growth worries in the face of weak economic data and the Federal Reserve’s decision last week to abandon projections for any interest rate hikes this year.

Wall Street’s main indexes came under pressure on Friday when the U.S. Treasury yield curve inverted for the first time since 2007. If it remains inverted for long, it could indicate that a recession is likely in one to two years. [US/]

Treasury prices continued its rally on Thursday, pushing the benchmark 10-year yields to fresh 15-month lows.

At 7:15 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were up 4 points, or 0.02 percent. S&P 500 e-minis were down 0.25 points, or 0.01 percent and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 0.25 points, or 0 percent.

Credit rating agency S&P Global became the latest to cut its 2019 euro zone growth forecast to 1.1 percent from 1.6 percent.

Investors will look to gauge the pace of economic growth in the United States from the Commerce Department’s final estimate of fourth-quarter gross domestic product. The report is set to be released at 8:30 a.m. ET and is expected to show the economy grew at an annualized rate of 2.4 percent.

Energy stocks fell in premarket trading as crude prices dropped, extending losses into a second consecutive session, following a surprise rise in U.S. crude inventories.

Boeing Co edged up 0.2 percent, extending the previous day’s gains, after the planemaker unveiled software fixes to defend its 737 MAX airliners.

Nielsen Holdings Plc fell 9.9 percent in light volumes after a report that private equity firm Blackstone Group backed out of an auction to buy the ratings company.

Lululemon Athletica Inc rose 12.3 percent after company forecast full-year profit above analysts’ estimates.

MONTREAL/OTTAWA (Reuters) – Rising waters were prompting further evacuations in central Canada on Thursday, with the mayor of the country’s capital, Ottawa, declaring a state of emergency and Quebec authorities warning that a hydroelectric dam was at risk of breaking.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson declared the emergency in response to rising water levels along the Ottawa River and weather forecasts that called for significant rainfall on Friday.

In a statement on Twitter, Watson asked for help from the Ontario provincial government and the country’s military.

He warned that “flood levels are currently forecasted to exceed the levels that caused significant damage to numerous properties in the city of Ottawa in 2017.”

Spring flooding had killed one person and forced more than 900 people from their homes in Canada’s Quebec province as of 1 p.m. on Thursday, according to a government website.

Ottawa has received 80 requests for service related to potential flooding such as sandbagging, a city spokeswoman said.

The prospect of more rain over the next 24 to 48 hours triggered concerns on Thursday that the hydroelectric dam at Bell Falls in the western part of Quebec could be at risk of failing because of rising water levels.

Quebec’s provincial police said 250 people were protectively removed from homes in the area as of late afternoon in case the dam on the Rouge River breaks.

The dam is now at its full flow capacity of 980 cubic meters per second of water, said Francis Labbé, a spokesman for the province’s state-owned utility, Hydro Quebec. He said Hydro Quebec expected the flow could rise to 1,200 cubic meters per second of water over the next two days.

“We have to take the worst-case scenario into consideration, since we`re already at the maximum capacity,” Labbé said by phone.

The dam is part of a power station that no longer produces electricity, but is regularly inspected by Hydro Quebec, he said.

BELFAST (Reuters) – Detectives investigating the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Northern Ireland last week suspect the gunman who shot her dead is in his late teens as they made a further appeal to the local community who they believe know his identity.

McKee’s killing by an Irish nationalist militant during a riot in Londonderry has sparked outrage in the province where a 1998 peace deal mostly ended three decades of sectarian violence that cost the lives of some 3,600 people.

The New IRA, one of a small number of groups that oppose the peace accord, has said one of its members shot the 29-year-old reporter dead in the Creggan area of the city on Thursday when opening fire on police during a riot McKee was watching.

The killing, which followed a large car bomb in Londonderry in January that police also blamed on the New IRA, has raised fears that small marginalized militant groups are exploiting a political vacuum in the province and tensions caused by Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

Police released footage on Friday of immediately before and after the shooting showing three men who were involved in the rioting and identified one as the gunman who they believe is in his late teens.

“I believe that the information that can help us to bring those responsible for her murder to justice lies within the community. I need the public to tell me who he is,” Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy told reporters.

Murphy said those involved in the disorder on the night were teenagers or in their early 20s, and that about 100 people were on the ground watching the trouble as it unfolded.

He added that police believed the gun used in the attack was of a similar caliber to those used before in paramilitary type attacks in Creggan.

“I recognize that people living in Creagan may find it’s difficult to come forward to speak to police. Today, I want to provide a personal reassurance that we are able to deal with those issues sensitively,” Murphy said, echoing similar appeals in recent days.

(Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures were flat on Friday, as investors paused ahead of GDP data, which is expected to show the world’s largest economy maintained a moderate pace of growth in the first quarter.

Gross domestic product probably increased at a 2% annualized rate in the quarter as a burst in exports, strong inventory stockpiling and government investment in public construction projects offset a slowdown in consumer and business spending, according to a Reuters survey of economists.

The Commerce Department report will be published at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The GDP data comes as investors look for fresh catalysts to push the markets higher. The S&P 500 index is about 0.5% below its record high hit in late September, after surging nearly 17% this year.

First-quarter earnings have been largely upbeat, with nearly 78% of the 178 companies that have reported so far surpassing earnings estimates, according to Refinitiv data.

Wall Street now expects S&P 500 earnings to be in line with the year-ago quarter, a sharp improvement from the 2.3% fall expected at the start of April.

Amazon.com Inc rose 0.9% in premarket trading after the e-commerce giant reported quarterly profit that doubled and beat estimates on soaring demand for its cloud and ad services.

Ford Motor Co shares surged 8.5% after the automaker posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings largely due to strong pickup truck sales in its core U.S. market.

Mattel Inc jumped 8% after the toymaker beat analysts’ estimates for quarterly revenue, as a more diverse range of Barbie dolls powered sales in the United States.

At 6:52 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 35 points, or 0.13%. S&P 500 e-minis were down 1.5 points, or 0.05% and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 10.75 points, or 0.14%.

Among decliners, Intel Corp slumped 7.7% after it cut its full-year revenue forecast and missed quarterly sales estimate for its key data center business.

Rival Advanced Micro Devices declined 0.8%.

Oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp are expected to report results later in the day.

WARSAW (Reuters) – Germany could owe Poland more than $850 billion in reparations for damages it incurred during World War Two and the brutal Nazi occupation, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Germany, one of Poland’s biggest trade partners and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO, says all financial claims linked to World War Two have been settled.

The right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) has revived calls for compensation since it took power in 2015 and has made the promotion of Poland’s wartime victimhood a central plank of its appeal to nationalism.

PiS has yet to make an official demand for reparations but its combative stance towards Germany has strained relations.

“Poland lost not only millions of its citizens but it was also destroyed in an unusually brutal way,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who heads the Polish parliamentary committee on reparations, told Reuters in an interview.

“Many (victims) are still alive and feel deeply wronged.”

His comments come a month before European Parliament elections in which populist and nationalist parties are expected to do well. Poland will also hold national elections later this year, with PiS still well ahead of its rivals in opinion polls.

EU LARGESSE

Mularczyk said the reparations figure could amount to more than 10 times the estimated 100 billion euros ($111 billion) that Poland has received so far in European Union funds since it joined the bloc in 2004.

Germany is the biggest net donor to the EU budget and some Germans regard its contributions as generous compensation to recipient countries like Poland which suffered under Nazi rule.

In 1953 Poland’s then-communist rulers relinquished all claims to war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to free East Germany, also a Soviet satellite, from any liabilities. PiS says that agreement is invalid because Poland was unable to negotiate fair compensation.

Mularczyk said his committee hoped to complete its report on the reparations issue by Sept. 1, the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s invasion.

Accusing Berlin of playing “diplomatic games” over the issue, he said: “The matter is being swept under the rug (by Germany) … until it’ll be wiped from the memory, from people’s awareness.”

His comments come after the Greek parliament voted this month to seek billions of euros in German reparations for the Nazi occupation of their country.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States did not pay any money to North Korea as it sought the release of comatose American student Otto Warmbier.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump had approved payment of a $2 million bill from North Korea to cover its care of the college student, who died shortly after he was returned to the United States after 17 months in a North Korean prison.
