Timeline of police response to New Zealand mosque attacks

New Zealand police on Wednesday released a detailed timeline of their response to the March 15 shootings that left 50 dead at two Christchurch mosques, confirming they arrested the suspected shooter 18 minutes after receiving the first emergency call.

Commissioner Mike Bush released the following second-by-second timeline, saying the New Zealand public should have as much information as possible about the police response:

___

1:40 p.m. — A manifesto written by the gunman and detailing his plan for the shootings is received at New Zealand's Parliament.

1:41 p.m. — Only 44 seconds after receiving the email, an official of Parliamentary Services phones the Southern Communications Center to alert police. The call lasts 12 minutes. "We now know that while police was talking to Parliamentary Services, the attack at Al Noor Mosque was already underway, having begun 44 seconds prior to Parliamentary Services calling," Bush said.

1:43 p.m. — After receiving the first emergency call, police dispatch all available units to Al Noor Mosque.

1:46 p.m. — Officers from the police Armed Offenders Squad arrive near the mosque, leave their vehicles and approach the scene. One stops to assist a critically wounded victim. "At this point the alleged offender is leaving the area and his vehicle is obscured from the view of these AOS members by a bus," Bush said. "At this time there is no vehicle description, no information an offender has left the mosque or how many shooters there are."

1:51 p.m. — First responders arrive at the mosque.

1:52 p.m. — The gunman takes six minutes to drive to Linwood Mosque, where seven people are killed.

1:55 p.m. — The gunman leaves Linwood Mosque.

1:56 p.m. — A member of the public flags down a police car to advise shots had been fired in Linwood.

1:57 p.m. — The gunman's vehicle is seen by police and pursued.

1:59 p.m. — The vehicle is stopped and the suspect arrested.

___

"I reaffirm my previous comments that police staff acted as quickly as humanly possible given the rapidly unfolding nature of the event and the information available to us in that very brief period of time," Bush said.

He said while an investigation of the police response is continuing, the information released Wednesday was the best police had at present.

A 28-year-old Australian man, Brenton Tarrant, has been charged with 50 counts of murder and 39 counts of attempted murder.

"The investigation team continues to be focused on confirming certain details, particularly timings sourced from a number of electronic systems and devices with differing internal clocks," Bush said.

He said New Zealand's terrorist threat level has been reduced from high to medium.

Florida inmate punches public defender in head during court hearing, shocking video shows

A Florida public defender was taken to the hospital after an inmate approached her from behind and punched her in the head during a bond hearing at the Broward County courthouse on Wednesday.

Assistant public defender Julie Chase was standing next to a female when William Green — who was in court for one count of touch or strike battery — walked up to the attorney from behind and punched her in the head, WSVN reported.

A video showed Chase falling to the floor next to the courtroom podium after Green swung his left fist. Courtroom bailiffs rushed in and appeared to tackle the inmate to the ground as Chase got up and walked away from the scene.

The room was filled with other inmates awaiting their bond court hearings.

It’s unclear why the inmate attacked Chase.

Broward Judge Jackie Powell was looking through documents pertaining to Walker’s case when the incident occurred. Powell looked at the monitor and asked, “What happened?” to which another public defender suggested a recess.

Chase was taken to the hospital, though the extent of her injuries were unclear. She has been working for the Public Defender’s Office since 2005, Executive Chief Assistant Gordon Weekes told the Sun-Sentinel.

“[Chase is] a very dedicated attorney,” Weekes said. “This is very unfortunate what happened this morning.”

ST PETERSBURG, Russia (Reuters) – A ballet set to music by The Rolling Stones and choreographed by Mick Jagger’s ballerina girlfriend has premiered in Russia.

The eight-minute “Porte Rouge” (Red Door) show, inspired by the veteran British singer’s zany dance style, delighted a packed crowd at St Petersburg’s famous Mariinsky Theatre on Tuesday night.

Jagger’s partner Melanie Hamrick, a U.S. dancer, masterminded the production featuring classic Stones tracks “Paint it Black,” “Sympathy for the Devil” and “She’s a Rainbow”.

“I tried to incorporate that feel of just the love of dance and the enjoyment when he is in concert,” Hamrick said.

“He has a very unique way of moving, a very free way of moving, so I tried to capture the essence of that.”

Jagger, now 75, curated the music and helped whittle down the tracklist from the Stones’ litany of hits.

“Very impressive, it is interesting to see the songs we all know in this style. The choreography is original, so it was very cool, I think,” said spectator and dancer Nicolas Mackay.

Plane crashes into Connecticut high school baseball field

A small plane reportedly crashed into a high school baseball field in Connecticut Thursday evening, injuring two people and causing a power outage that led the administration to cancel class Friday.

The pilot was performing a touch-and-go drill, which involves landing on a runway and taking off again without coming to a full stop, near Meriden-Markham Airport, when he crashed into ballfields at Wilcox Technical High School in Meriden, public information officer Sgt. Christopher Fry told WTIC.

PLANE CRASH IN COLOMBIA KILLS 14, OFFICIALS SAY

Police were called to the scene around 7 p.m. where first responders found two men, one in his 30s and one in his 50s, near the wreckage, WTNH reported. One man was able to pull himself out of the plane without assistance. The other was pulled from the plane by emergency personnel.

No one died in the crash and no one on the ground was injured. The two occupants of the plane, who are both pilots, were both transported to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed only two people were onboard.

The plane careened into a high tension power line, knocking it into a second power line, which resulted in a power outage. About 17,000 were without electricity due to the crash. Wilcox Technical High School canceled classes Friday.

Eversource Energy, the electric services company in the area, dispatched almost a dozen crew members to the site who were able to restore power by early Friday morning, WTIC reported. Some customers were prevented from going into their homes while crews made repairs.

Athletics: Distance races to continue at Prefontaine despite IAAF changes

March 15, 2019

By Gene Cherry

(Reuters) – Distance races are expected to continue at Oregon’s Prefontaine Classic and at other meetings even though the Diamond League is dropping events longer than 3,000 meters from its globally televised program in 2020, officials say.

The sport’s ruling IAAF said on Monday that starting in 2020 the number of Diamond League disciplines will be cut from 32 to 24 with 12 each for men and women and the longest event on the circuit’s televised program will be 3,000 meters. [L8N20Y3VI]

But that does not prevent meetings from holding other events, according to Tom Jordan, meeting director of the Diamond League’s Prefontaine Classic, and the International Association of Athletics Federations CEO Jon Ridgeon.

“When we’re back at the new Hayward Field (with the Classic) I imagine that we would have the distance night on Friday as we have had in the past that could feature a 10,000 meters, could feature a 5,000 meters, or could feature one of each for men and women,” Jordan told Reuters in a telephone interview.

“We are certainly going to play to our base and that is middle and long distance plus virtually every event,” added Jordan, whose meet is moving to the San Francisco area this year while a new stadium is built in Eugene for the 2021 world championships.

Along with a 90-minute international window for television broadcasts, “DL Meetings will also offer a further 30 minutes plus of additional coverage to their own domestic broadcaster, which will include extra domestic-themed events,” Ridgeon said in a statement.

“If deemed to be of sufficient quality, this additional coverage will also be offered to the International broadcasters if they wish to take it.”

The changes are part of an effort to develop a faster and more concentrated format that is more attractive to audiences.

‘SAD DECISION’

The plans brought immediate disapproval from athletics officials in distance-oriented Ethiopia and Kenya.

“It is a sad decision that will disproportionately affect Ethiopia and Kenya, as well as East Africa as a whole,” Ethiopian running great Haile Gebrselassie told Reuters. [L8N20Z6QF]

Barnaba Korir, chairman of the Athletics Kenya Nairobi region, said track and field would lose its historical significance and financial incentives if the long distances were dropped. [L8N2117C3]

“Historically, the longer distances were the pillar of track and field. Marathon was the pride of the Olympics, and 5,000m and 10,000m races were what made track and field interesting,” the former 10,000m and road runner told Reuters.

The 5,000 and 10,000 meters distances remain part of the world championship and Olympic programs.

The United States and Canadian athletics federations said they were working to increase opportunities for distance runners.

“USATF continues to support athletes in events 3,000m and higher,” the U.S. federation said in a statement.

“The USATF Distance Classic will continue to grow in supporting athletes at distances 3,000m and higher, as will other middle-to-long-distance focused meets.”

The Classic takes place each spring in the Los Angeles area. This year’s event is scheduled for May 16.

“We are kind of doing the opposite (from the Diamond League),” Athletics Canada Chief Operating Officer Mathieu Gentes told Reuters.

“We are trying to build our Canadian 10,000 meters camp, which has recently partnered with the Pacific Distance Carnival and we are trying to build a whole festival.”

The June carnival will include the Canadian 10,000 meters championships, and “we are putting focus on improving the quality and the entertainment value of the event,” Gentes said.

Donna Brazile: Obama did ‘everything he could’ to prevent Russian meddling

Fox News contributor Donna Brazile defended former President Barack Obama on Friday as he faced criticism for his response to Russian meddling during the 2016 election.

"I think they did everything they could without sounding all of the alarm bells," she said of Obama's administration. The subject came up as Fox News host Dana Perino asked Brazile on "The Daily Briefing" about Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report — something Brazile said should be a "wake-up call" due to its troubling findings about Russian interference.

If Obama did more on Russian meddling, she said, critics would have accused him of trying to help his former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, in her race against then-candidate Donald Trump.

KIMBERLEY STRASSEL: MUELLER'S REPORT SPEAKS VOLUMES

"He was in a box," Brazile said of Obama. "Perhaps President Trump is in a box," she added, before calling for action to prevent future meddling. Her comments came as the Obama administration faced renewed scrutiny over spying on the Trump campaign.

Mueller's investigation did not find sufficient evidence to formally accuse Trump's campaign of collusion, although it contained details about activity related to that issue.

During an earlier interview on "Outnumbered," Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., defended the former president, saying that he shouldn't have to apologize, given Mueller's findings. Mueller's report, he said, "laid out a multiplicity of contacts between the Trump campaign and Russians."

Fox News Chief National Correspondent Ed Henry, who joined Brazile on "The Daily Briefing" panel Friday, indicated that Democrats should give Trump associates credit for not taking Russian "bait." "Where's the credit for the Trump folks who didn't take the bait? I mean, we've heard for two years that they did," he said.

KELLYANNE CONWAY, AFTER MUELLER REPORT'S RELEASE, SAYS PRESS APOLOGIES ARE IN ORDER

Brazile countered that the Trump campaign "exploited" information from Wikileaks, an organization with suspected ties to Russia, to create a "false narrative."

"Every day, the Trump campaign would get the Wikileaks information; they would blast it. He used it in his daily rallies and daily meetings," Brazile said.

Brazile, who served as interim Democratic National Committee chair during the election, backed away from making any determination about whether her party should pursue impeaching the president.

That question arose after Mueller's report stopped short of accusing Trump of obstructing justice, but highlighted 10 items that were concerning in relation to that issue.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

"I think it's premature to talk about what the next step is," she said. "Before we can move into what I call the impeachment gear, perhaps we should just dive into this report," she added.

While congressional Democrats have already pushed for more information regarding the investigation, the party as a whole seemed hesitant about impeachment. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has quashed the idea on multiple occasions but newcomers — like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., — have thrown their weight behind impeaching the president. Like Brazile, DNC Chair Tom Perez appeared to sidestep impeachment questions on Thursday and said it was unclear whether or not obstruction occurred.

Australian pilots spells out ‘I’m Bored’ during test flight

An Australian pilot, unenthused with the task of a 2-hour test flight, spelled out the words, “I’m Bored,” on his tracking device Tuesday morning.

The message, which was reportedly “dozens of kilometers” long and flown over Adelaide in South Australia, was seen by aviation followers, but not visible to anyone on the ground. FlightAware captured an image of the pilot’s message which was “drawn” between approximately 9:00 a.m. and noon.

The pilot, who has only been identified in local media as a “young pilot,” was reportedly tasked with testing out a single propeller aircraft at a single speed for two hours in preparation for its sale, Adelaide Now reported.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
