A Washington state sheriff's deputy was shot and killed in the line of duty Saturday night after responding to a report of a disabled vehicle blocking a roadway, officials said.

Deputy Justin DeRosier, 29, had arrived at the scene northeast of Kalama around 10 p.m., the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook.

DeRosier was shot soon afterwards and received medical care. He died at a nearby hospital, officials said.

Washington homeowner shoots, kills burglary suspect while on the phone with 911, police say

A suspected burglar was shot dead by a Washington state homeowner Monday, who pulled the trigger while still on the phone with a 911 operator reporting the break-in, officials said.

The King County Sheriff's Office said on Twitter the incident happened around 2:30 a.m. in White Center, located south of Seattle, after the homeowner woke up to find the suspect inside his home.

“Initially he thought there were three suspects,” King County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Abbott told Q13 News. “So far the investigation is proving that not to be true, it just appears to be one suspect that acted alone at this time.”

At some point, with the 35-year-old homeowner on the phone with 911, he opened fire on the intruder, killing him.

“You have every right to protect yourself or your family if you’re in fear for your life or safety, and it appears that’s what happened in this instance so far,”  Abbott told Q13 News.

Police said a K9 tracking team went out to search for a possible second suspect, but no one else ended up being located.

Neighbors told dQ13 News they already feel uneasy about crime reports in the area, and wonder how the homeowner is holding up after the shooting.

"I’m not glad he did it, but you got to do what you got to do,” neighbor Dale Matthews said.

Counter-extremism expert says media, politicians should identify attacks in Sri Lanka for what they are

The founder of a London-based think tank that focuses on counter-extremism criticized media outlets and prominent political figures for not being forthright about this past Sunday's suicide bombings in Sri Lanka aimed at Christians.

Six suicide bombings were orchestrated by Jihadi extremists against Sri Lanka's Christian community killing over 300 people.

The media and prominent political figures went out of their way to downplay the religious aspects of the attacks prompting criticism, host Tucker Carlson said.

SRI LANKA AUTHORITIES WARNED OF EASTER CHURCH BOMBINGS WEEKS BEFORE SUNDAY’S MASSACRE, OFFICIALS SAY

"They have been unable to name Islamist extremism by name and jihadist terrorism being a violent manifestation because they genuinely believe that a bigger threat due to their political perspective is white supremacist and far-right extremism and then, of course, there's the pragmatic political side of things. They are pandering to a certain vote base and they fear by naming these things even if they wanted to, it would cause them trouble with their base and that's not how I operate and that's not how I think any decent human being should operate," Maajid Nawaz, founder of Quilliam said on "Tucker Carlson Tonight."

"What happened in New Zealand was a white supremacist terrorist attack and what's happened in Sri Lanka is a jihadist terrorist attack and it moves us all to speak plainly about this so we can address these problems."

Former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tweeted their condolences Sunday to Sri Lanka but made it a point to avoid calling the victims Christians, instead calling them "Easter worshippers."

The Washington Post published an analytical piece Monday entitled "Christianity under attack? Sri Lanka church bombings stoke far-right anger in the West."

Nawaz lamented the political angles being played during tragedy.

"I think sadly too many people play politics with tragedy and they allow for their own framework of their own bias to influence how they view human tragedy and then they use that to peddle their own political narrative," Nawaz said.

France and Germany launch alliance to back multilateralism

France and Germany have announced the launch of an Alliance for Multilateralism to promote global cooperation at a time of rising nationalism in Europe, the United States and elsewhere.

France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told a joint news conference with Germany's Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Tuesday that their first objective is to show that states that "support multilateralism and support the United Nations remain the majority in the world."

The second objective, he said, is to create a network of countries ready to support multilateralism and cooperate, including to fight inequality, tackle climate change and address the consequences of new technologies.

Le Drian said the alliance also wants "to show the world what could be the consequences of unilateralism and isolationism enabling nationalism and extremist speeches to flourish."

He said the alliance is a response to the risk of shattering the post-World War II world order that established the United Nations and other international institutions.

U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres opened last September's annual gathering of world leaders at the General Assembly declaring that global cooperation is the world's best hope and warning that "multilateralism is under fire precisely when we need it most."

U.S. President Donald Trump's speech, soon after Guterres.' poured scorn on multilateralism, touted his "America First" policy, and rejected "the ideology of globalism."

Nonetheless, General Assembly President Maria Espinosa Garces said at the end of the week-long meeting during which all 193 U.N. member nations spoke that one of its major achievements was strong global backing for the U.N. and multilateralism.

Le Drian said cooperation is never easy but it is key to security "because there is security only if it is collective, and it is the best guarantee for long-lasting peace."

He said France and Germany will pursue the initiative in the coming months and try to convince as many countries as possible to join before leaders gather this September.

Le Drian noted that he and Maas discussed the alliance with Canada and Japan, but he made no mention of the United States.

Asked about possible support from the Trump administration, and whether it had been contacted, Le Drian said: "Whoever wants to join us can join us — It is against nobody."

Maas said he hasn't talked to Trump about it yet.

"This alliance is an inclusive alliance," he said. "So we don't want a situation where countries are left out. We don't lock out anyone. But, of course, we see multilateralism is under threat ... and all of those who want to join such an initiative (should) also declare themselves to be multilateralists."

"We would be happy, of course, if the United States were to join such an initiative, but this initiative has the aim to promote and strengthen the rules-based order and strengthen the international order," Maas said. "In the end, everyone will have to decide on which side they're on."

European soccer players back Italian following racial abuse

A black player for Italy's most popular soccer club won support from other European players Wednesday, a day after he was subjected to a torrent of racist abuse from an opposing team's fans.

Juventus forward Moise Kean scored his team's second goal against Cagliari late in the 2-0 victory Tuesday and stood in front of the home fans with his arms outstretched. That seemed to trigger a furious and openly racist outcry from the fans.

One of his teammates, Leonardo Bonucci, added fuel to the fire by saying Kean was partly to blame for the angry response. That prompted players on other teams to rush to Kean's defense.

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling, who is black, ridiculed the remark: "Leonardo Bonucci ... All you can do now is laugh." He also posted a screenshot on Twitter.

"I support every fight against racism, we're all equal," Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba wrote in an Instagram post of Kean celebrating his goal. The Frenchman, who used to play for Juventus, then added, in Italian: "Good Italians wake up, you can't let a small group of racists talk for you."

Kean, a 19-year-old Italian whose parents are from Ivory Coast, was insulted by home fans during much of Tuesday's game in Cagliari. He received a yellow card for faking an injury in the first half.

His goal and ensuing celebration seemed to push the home fans over the edge.

Cagliari captain Luca Ceppitelli tried to protect Kean, rushing to his side and pleading with the fans to stop. Instead, Ceppitelli was almost hit on the head by a bottle thrown from the stands.

In his comments partially blaming Kean, Bonucci said: "There were racist boos after Kean's celebration and (Blaise) Matuidi got angry but I think the blame is 50-50."

He added: "Kean made a mistake and the fans made a mistake."

Matuidi, who is also black and won the World Cup with France last year, was subjected to racist abuse in Cagliari last year.

The incident involving Kean is but the latest example of racism in soccer this season. Last week, several England players were targeted with monkey chants during the team's 5-1 victory in Montenegro.

Former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, a four-time African player of the year from Ivory Coast, said players who are being targeted should walk off the field.

"Yeah, let's do this," Toure said at a UEFA conference on diversity in soccer. "When something like that happens we have to send a strong message."

As criticism mounted Wednesday, Bonucci backtracked on his comments in an Instagram post.

"After 24 hours I want to clarify my feelings," he wrote. "I was interviewed right at the end of the game, and my words have been clearly misunderstood, probably because I was too hasty in the way I expressed my thoughts. Hours and years wouldn't be enough to talk about this topic. I firmly condemn all forms of racism and discrimination. The abuses are not acceptable at all and this must not be misunderstood."

Another teammate from both Juventus and Italy's national team, Giorgio Chiellini, defended Kean in a story posted on the club's website, calling him "a positive figure of Italian football."

"The only thing he did wrong today was the simulation (faking injury), that he surely won't repeat, but he's here to learn," Chiellini said. "He's a very positive figure and he certainly didn't deserve the insults he received."

Kean, who scored in both of Italy's qualifying matches for the 2020 European Championship, also won backing from Mario Balotelli — another black Italian born to African parents and who played for the country's national team.

"And tell Bonucci that his luck is that I wasn't there," Balotelli wrote on Instagram. "Instead of defending you he does this? I'm shocked I swear. I love you brother!"

Kean hasn't spoken publicly about the incident, but posted a photo of his goal celebration on Instagram.

"The best way to respond to racism," Kean wrote, "#notoracism."

US Jewish Leaders Slam Netanyahu's Parliament Moves

Jewish-American rabbis, organizations, and donors have lashed out at Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's efforts to ensure a racist, far-right party is part of the next parliament.

Netanyahu has pushed for weeks for an election pact between Otzma Yehudit, an extremist party that includes supporters of the racist Rabbi Meir Kahane, and the religious-Zionist Habayit Hayehudi party, Haaretz reported.

He convinced both to join forces Wednesday and run on a joint ticket in the April 9 election, increasing their chances of winning seats in the Knesset.

"This will complicate efforts to advocate for Israel, especially within the Jewish community. What are we supposed to tell our children?" former Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., warned, per Haaretz.

"We, Zionists, and supporters of Israel in America, spend so much effort to rightly expose and highlight incitement on the Palestinain side. So, when the prime minister gives this legitimacy to such an extreme party, it hurts our efforts. I fear that it will introduce some degree of moral equivalence and serve to rationalize incitement. That's not helpful."

Rabbi Rick Jacobs, head of the Union for Reform Judaism – the largest Jewish organization in North America – called it "deeply distressing to imagine that those who follow in the footsteps of Meir Kahane could be welcomed into Prime Minister Netanyahu's political circle," Haaretz reported.

And Susie Gelman, a major Jewish philanthropist who has supported Jewish and Israeli institutions for decades, told the news outlet she found the efforts "absolutely shocking."

"I have had policy disagreements with Netanyahu before, but this raises a new question: Is there any line of decency and morality that he will not cross?" she added, Haaretz reported.

Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt also weighed in on social media.

"There should be no room for racism & no accommodation for intolerance in Israel or any democracy," he tweeted. "ADL previously has spoken out on hate-filled rhetoric of leaders of the Otzma Yehudit party, it is troubling that they are being legitimized by this union."

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – The grounding of India’s Jet Airways is turning into a quick windfall and long-term opportunity for international airlines keen to scoop up nearly a million outbound passengers from what was once the nation’s biggest airline.

Jet, which previously had a fleet of around 120 largely Boeing Co planes, was forced to indefinitely halt all flight operations on April 17 after its banks rejected the carrier’s plea for emergency funds.

The carrier’s descent into crisis has benefited international airlines in the form of rising fares and demand, data showed.

Fares from India to cities such as Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Bali in the first quarter of 2019 rose between 4 percent and 32 percent from a year ago, according to Indian travel portal MakeMyTrip Ltd.

In the peak travel months of May and June, fares to London have spiked as much as 36 percent and tickets to San Francisco are up nearly 20 percent from a year ago, according to data from travel portal Yatra.com.

“For the next three months it’s actually bonanza time for international players,” said Ashish Nainan, a research analyst at CARE Ratings. “At least until the middle of June, the fares are not going to come down.”

Due to rising demand, even before Jet’s lessors grounded planes, carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines Ltd and United Airlines saw an up to a 27 percent increase in passenger numbers from India in the last quarter of 2018, data from India’s aviation regulator showed. That is the latest period for which the data is available.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, clocking 15-20 percent domestic growth in recent years. It has long had only two full-service long-haul carriers, state-run Air India and Jet.

Jet is now hoping to be bailed out by a new investor, with final bids due on May 10.

INCREASING CAPACITY

Before its grounding, Jet had the biggest share of India’s outbound international air traffic, carrying 12 percent of the 7.8 million passengers headed overseas in the Oct-Dec quarter, down from 14 percent a year earlier, data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.

For an interactive graphic on Jet’s market share, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2WvDQYi

For an interactive graphic on average daily flights by the airline, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2FeFDel

The total number of passengers traveling overseas with Jet fell 10 percent during the last quarter of 2018 even as the outbound travel market grew about 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines posted a 27 percent increase in passengers from India, Cathay registered 17 percent growth and British Airways saw a 10 percent rise in the same period.

Cathay said the events at Jet combined with increasing demand for travel had led it to deploy larger aircraft with more seats on some Indian routes.

“In the long term we would certainly like to be able to offer more capacity into India, not just on our existing routes but by establishing new services to secondary cities,” Cathay said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines, in an email to Reuters, said the Indian market is “very promising” but declined to give details of airfare levels or demand patterns in the wake of Jet’s exit, citing a quiet period before the release of its annual results.

DOMESTIC GAINS

Jet’s grounding has also had a big impact on the domestic market, with inter-city air fares to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata soaring more than 20 percent in May and June, according to Yatra.com.

The spike in fares is expected to underpin strong earnings for IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd, which are set to report results for the quarter ended March 31 in the coming weeks.

“Domestic Indian carriers are the main benefactors, but I suspect if Jet fails to be revived by May 10 then Vistara and other airlines that ply international routes, particularly the lucrative Gulf market, are the main winners,” said Shukor Yusof, the head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics. Vistara is a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

Inadequate bilateral traffic rights between India and other countries, however, could be an impediment to foreign carriers’ hopes of winning business lost by Jet, some analysts said.

“Even before Jet’s operational shutdown, international capacity was significantly constrained,” said Kapil Kaul, CEO for South Asia of consultancy CAPA. “We have now more serious capacity challenge … this is unlikely to be stabilized in the near term.”

A new national government likely to be in place sometime after elections end in May is expected to address the international capacity constraints, and once bilateral agreements are eased airlines including Emirates, Turkish and Qatar would immediately benefit, said Kaul.

“We would love to add more flights but we are at the limit of the allocation granted to us for traffic rights,” Emirates Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori told reporters in Dubai on Wednesday.

(Reuters) – AstraZeneca Plc beat first-quarter sales and earnings expectations on Friday as the British drugmaker benefited from a push into cancer drugs and emerging markets including China.

Newer treatments such as lung cancer drug Tagrisso, now the company’s top selling medicine, have helped the drugmaker’s return to growth after years of crumbling sales due to patent losses on older drugs.

Sales in China have shown explosive growth, more than doubling since 2012, but AstraZeneca executives on Friday said that may not be sustained.

“The enormous growth you currently see in China, 28 percent, probably is not sustainable, but we feel very bullish that the growth will continue to be at a pace of between 15 percent and 20 percent,” Ruud Dobber, executive vice president, BioPharma, told Reuters.

Shares of the company were down 0.2 percent at 5,878 pence at 1031 GMT.

The turnaround in AstraZeneca’s fortunes has been powered by a push into cancer treatments led by Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, who saw off a 2014 takeover bid from Pfizer in part by promising annual sales of $45 billion by 2023.

In the first quarter, sales from its oncology unit rose 59 percent to $1.89 billion, accounting for 35 percent of total product sales.

The company has moved deeper into cancer therapy market through wide-ranging deals, including those for immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Last month, it agreed a multi-billion dollar oncology deal with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd.

“We’re reaching that point where after years of having to keep faith, we have actually got something tangible to believe in,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett said.

AstraZeneca also backed its annual sales and earnings forecast and said it has extensively prepared for UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union, even in the event of a no-deal exit.

The company has already spent more than 40 million pounds ($52 million) on Brexit preparations, including stockpiling six weeks’ worth of drugs in the UK and four weeks in continental Europe to guard against shortages.

AstraZeneca said product sales rose 14 percent at constant currency to $5.47 billion in the quarter, led by its lung cancer drug Tagrisso and respiratory treatment Pulmicort.

China sales increased by 28 percent to $1.24 billion in the quarter, accounting for nearly a quarter of overall product sales.

Core earnings came in at 89 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts on average were expecting core earnings of 85 cents per share and product sales of $5.29 billion, according to a company provided consensus of 19 analysts.

Britain and Ireland are making a new push to restore Northern Ireland’s collapsed government, amid mounting criticism of politicians following the murder of a journalist by a banned militant group.

The two governments are expected to make an announcement Friday about talks to revive the power-sharing administration, which has been suspended for more than two years because of a dispute between the main Protestant and Catholic parties.

Security officials warn that political drift in Northern Ireland could embolden those bent on violence.

Pressure on politicians has grown since the killing of journalist Lyra McKee, shot dead by an Irish nationalist militant during rioting in Londonderry last week.

Police have released video footage of a stocky, masked man they say is a key suspect and have urged residents to help identify him.
