Dems Could Pick Up 2 House Seats in NC Special Elections

North Carolina's Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper recently set the rules and timetable for special elections to fill open U.S. House seats in his state's 9th and 3rd Districts.

Although both districts were firmly in Republican hands for decades, Democrats are expected to make all-out efforts to win both the 3rd District long held by the late Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., and the 9th — recently declared vacant after Republican nominee Mark Harris was found to have hired a political consultant who engaged in the practice of "ballot harvesting" (a way of collecting absentee ballots that is illegal in the Tar heel State).

"Given the controversy over the ballots cast in the November race that cast clouds over the Republican nominee, it has to be said that the Democrat will be the favorite in the special election," former Republican consultant Marc Rotterman told Newsmax.

Democrat Dan McCready, a small business owner and U.S. Marine Corps veteran who saw action in Iraq, lost to Republican Harris by 905 votes last fall. He is a virtual certainty to carry the Democratic banner again in the special election Sept. 10 and is sure to be targeted for support by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic National Committee.

In contrast, 10 Republicans are vying for nomination in the primary May 14.  The early favorites are two-term state Sen. Dan Bishop, considered a strong conservative, and Union County Commissioner Stony Rushing, who has the endorsement of Harris and many of his fellow evangelical conservatives.

If no candidate wins at least 30 percent of the vote in the primary, a run-off between the top two vote-getters will be held Sept. 10 and thus push the general election to Nov. 5.

A Democrat pickup of the seat would mean one of the most durably Republican seats in the South had flipped hands. The 9th has had five U.S. Representatives since 1952, all of them Republican.

The 3rd District (Eastern North Carolina), long a bastion of support for the late conservative hero and Sen. Jesse Helms, R.-N.C., was held by Walter Jones from 1994, when he unseated Rep. Martin Lancaster, D-N.C. Since then, Jones faced challenges in primaries from Republicans who did not like some of his controversial stands (such as opposing President George W. Bush on U.S. involvement in both Afghanistan and Iraq).

But general elections were always cakewalks for Jones. Now, 17 Republicans are competing for nomination in the primary April 30. Among them are three state representatives, three county commissioners, and Michele Nix, who resigned as vice chairman of the state Republican Party to make the race.

Among Democrats, three of the six contenders are considered political heavyweights: New Bern Mayor Dana Outlaw, former Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas, and Richard Bew, a retired U.S. Marine and former legislative director for the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. All three are considered centrist Democrats in the mold of Gov. Cooper.

The general election to fill Jones' seat is scheduled for July 9. But if the top vote-getter in either primary fails to attain 30 percent of the vote April 30, a run-off will be held July 9 and the special election bumped to Sept. 10.

One other factor makes Republicans a bit more uneasy about the 9th and 3rd District contests: in both, there will be an active Libertarian nominee and that usually works against Republicans in close races.

Fired prosecutor reaches settlement with St. Louis County

A veteran assistant prosecutor who was fired in January when Wesley Bell took over as St. Louis County's top prosecutor has reached a $25,000 settlement with the county.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Friday that the settlement with Kathi Alizadeh also calls for the county to pay back pay and legal bills.

Bell is a Democrat who ousted longtime Democratic Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch in the 2018 primary election and ran unopposed in November. He fired Alizadeh on his second day on the job.

Alizadeh worked with McCulloch for many years and presented evidence to the grand jury after the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson in 2014. The grand jury declined to charge the white officer who shot the unarmed black teenager.

A spokeswoman for Bell declined comment Friday.

(Reuters) – Apple Inc said on Thursday Spotify wants all the benefits of a free app without being free, as the iPhone maker responded to the audio streaming service provider’s complaint with European Union antitrust regulators.

Spotify, which launched a year after the 2007 launch of the iPhone, said on Wednesday Apple unfairly limits rivals to its own Apple Music streaming service.

Apple’s control of its App store deprived consumers of choice and rival providers of audio streaming services to the benefit of Apple Music, which began in 2015, Spotify added.

In response, Apple said it has “approved and distributed nearly 200 app updates on Spotify’s behalf, resulting in over 300 million downloaded copies of the Spotify app.”

“The only time we have requested adjustments is when Spotify has tried to sidestep the same rules that every other app follows,” Apple said in a statement. https://apple.co/2TDPBPo

“Spotify is free to build apps for — and compete on — our products and platforms, and we hope they do.”

Chinese woman arrested at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club is denied bail

The Chinese woman accused of lying to briefly gain admission into President Trump's Mar-a-Lago club last month was denied bail Monday by a federal judge, who says there is an "extreme risk of flight" if she were to be set free.

Yujing Zhang, appearing in a West Palm Beach court dressed in a blue jumpsuit with both her wrists and ankles shackled, also pleaded not guilty to federal charges of lying to federal agents and illegal entering.

Federal Magistrate Judge William Matthewman ultimately refused to set bail for the 33-year-old, saying there is an "extreme risk of flight" if she were released. The U.S. doesn't have an extradition treaty with China.

Matthewman remarked that "it appears to the court that Ms. Zhang was up to something nefarious" — a reference to the various electronics she was found to be carrying and that she left in her hotel room. Zhang, however, has not been charged with espionage.

Zhang was arrested March 30 after Secret Service agents say she gained admission to Mar-a-Lago by falsely telling a checkpoint guard she was a member.

The agents say she told a clerk inside she was there for a nonexistent Chinese American event.

3 die in Germany plane crash, 2 more in police car crash

German police say a pilot and two passengers are believed to have died in the crash of a small airplane near Frankfurt and two more people died in a collision with a police vehicle responding to the scene.

Police said the six-seater airplane took off in France and was on its way to the central German town of Egelsbach when it crashed and burned in a field Sunday afternoon near Erzhausen, 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Frankfurt.

Police said they believed three people were aboard but said they were still working on positive identification of the victims as well as confirming the number of occupants.

The dpa news agency, citing police, reported that three people in a police vehicle were seriously injured in the traffic crash while the two people in the other car died.

Georgia man convicted of concealing death of teacher, ex-beauty queen

A Georgia jury on Thursday convicted a man accused of helping to conceal the 2005 murder of a high school teacher and onetime beauty queen and lying to law enforcement about her death.

Bo Dukes, 34, was convicted on two counts of making a false statement, one count of hindering the apprehension of a criminal, and one count of concealing the death of another. He is due to be sentenced at 9 a.m. Friday and faces up to 25 years in prison.

Dukes is the first of two suspects to stand trial in the death of Tara Grinstead, who was last seen alive in October 2005. Her fate was a mystery in her hometown of Ocilla, about 90 miles southeast of Macon, until Dukes and his best friend, Ryan Duke, were arrested in February 2017.

Prosecutors said Dukes confessed in 2006 to an old Army buddy, John McCullough, that he helped dispose of Grinstead's body but lied to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation agent who interviewed him about the case a decade later in 2016.

John Fox, Dukes' defense attorney, said during closing arguments that prosecutors had not proved that Dukes intentionally lied to the GBI agent.

"Dukes told the GBI that he did not recall having a conversation with John McCullough," Fox said. "He didn't tell them he did not have a conversation with John McCullough."

He added: "Considering how intoxicated he was, based on McCullough's own testimony, does that seem unreasonable to you?"

After his a few months later, Dukes said Duke had broken into Grinstead's home and strangled her in her bed, then used a pickup truck he'd borrowed from Dukes to move her body to a pecan orchard owned by Dukes' uncle.

Dukes said his friend took him to Grinstead's body and together they moved it deeper into the woods, built a bonfire atop the corpse and burned it for two days.

Wilcox District Attorney Brad Rigby said Duke and Dukes set fire to the remains of a woman who had "a smile that won beauty pageants" and ensured she was "reduced to bits of skull, vertebra and teeth." He added that Dukes had inflicted "more pain" on the missing woman's family when he lied to authorities in 2016.

"He had the opportunity to make the right decision and tell the truth, but he went in a different direction and he abused honor and he abused trust," Rigby said.

Dukes did not testify in his own defense and his legal team did not present any witnesses.

Ryan Duke has been charged with Grinstead's murder and is scheduled to stand trial in nearby Irwin County, Ga. beginning April 1. Dukes is also scheduled to face trial on charges related to the burning of Grinstead's body in a neighboring county.

GBI agent Jason Shoudel testified at a pretrial court hearing that Duke confessed to killing Grinstead and burning her body. He said DNA from both Duke and Grinstead was found on a latex glove recovered outside her home.

But Duke's defense attorneys say Duke gave a false confession while he was under the influence of drugs. They have said in court documents that Duke was at home asleep the night Grinstead was killed.

April 26, 2019

By James Davey

LONDON (Reuters) – With Sainsbury’s dream of creating Britain’s biggest supermarket group in tatters, its chastened CEO Mike Coupe needs to reassure investors he has the plan to arrest a sales decline when he presents annual results next week.

Britain’s competition regulator blocked Sainsbury’s 7.3 billion pound ($9.4 billion) takeover of Walmart’s Asda on Thursday, saying the deal would increase prices. Sainsbury’s shares fell 5 percent and are down 22 percent over the last three months.

For Sainsbury’s fourth quarter to March 9 analysts are on average forecasting a 1.6 percent fall in like-for-like sales, which would follow 1.1 percent decline over the Christmas period.

Monthly industry data from researcher Kantar has also shown Sainsbury’s as the weakest performer of the big four grocers this year and this month it lost its status as Britain’s No. 2 supermarket group by market share to Asda.

While Sainsbury’s has struggled, market leader Tesco has gained momentum, this month reporting a 34 percent jump in full year profit.

Prohibition of the deal was a major blow to Coupe, its architect and Sainsbury’s boss since 2014.

Martin Scicluna became Sainsbury’s chairman last month and when bedded-in may decide that if the group needs a major shake-up it is best carried out by a new leader.

Much will depend on the attitude of 22 percent shareholder the Qatar Investment Authority, which has so far declined to comment, as well as Coupe’s own appetite to continue after 15 years at the group.

THE RIGHT STRATEGY?

Coupe said on Thursday he was confident Sainsbury’s was pursuing the right strategy.

That was a clear indication that Wednesday’s results statement will not include radical changes to the group’s plans, such as a big margin reset — sacrificing profit to drive sales.

However, sources connected to Sainsbury’s said Coupe would likely acknowledge that more needs to be done on prices, so the supermarket business can better compete with its big four rivals – Tesco, Asda and No. 4 Morrisons – as well as German-owned discounters Aldi and Lidl.

Coupe’s strategy is based on differentiating Sainsbury’s food offer, growing its general merchandise, clothing business and bank, while investing in convenience and online channels.

Some analysts believe major change is needed.

HSBC analyst David McCarthy reckons Sainsbury’s needs a margin reset, should allocate more space for core lines and needs to drive better store standards. He said Sainsbury’s might consider closing down space in some of its larger stores and reducing its non-food offer.

For the full 2018-19 year analysts are on average forecasting a pretax profit of 626 million pounds, up from 589 million pounds in 2017-18 – a second straight year of profit growth. A full year dividend of 10.5 pence per share is forecast versus 10.2 pence last time.

Bank and lawyer fees related to the proposed combination with Asda were 17 million pounds in the first half and have reportedly jumped to around 50 million pounds.

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada posted a budget surplus in the first 11 months of the 2018/19 fiscal year compared to a deficit the year earlier as revenues increased mostly on higher tax incomes, the finance department said on Friday.

The surplus for April-February was C$3.1 billion, compared to a deficit of C$6 billion in the same 2017/18 period. Revenues climbed by 8.5 percent, mainly due to higher tax receipts, while program expenses rose by 4.8 percent.

The surplus for February was C$4.3 billion compared with C$2.8 billion in February 2018. Revenues jumped by 12.2 percent while program expenses posted a more modest 6.9 percent gain.

Last month, the Liberals unveiled their new budget, projecting a C$14.9 billion deficit in 2018/19, with the deficit rising to C$19.8 billion in fiscal 2019/20.

President Trump said Friday he would beat Joe Biden “easily” in the 2020 presidential election, suggesting the former vice president could not have enough “energy” to hold the post—taking an apparent swipe at his age.

The president, departing the White House, was asked about Biden’s entrance into the Democratic primary field. Biden announced his presidential bid early Thursday morning, marking his third attempt at the White House.

JOE BIDEN OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES 2020 PRESIDENTIAL BID

“I think we’d beat him easily,” Trump told reporters Friday.

Trump, 72, said he feels “young” and is ready for 2020, and another term for his administration.

“I feel like a young man. I am a young, vibrant man,” Trump said. “I look at Joe, I don’t know about him.”

The president’s comments seemingly were a shot at the age of Biden, who is 76.

BIDEN ENTERS WHITE HOUSE RACE WITHOUT OBAMA’S ENDORSEMENT

“I would never say anyone’s too old,” Trump said. “I know they’re all making me look very young both in terms of age and in terms of energy.”

Biden became the 20th candidate to join the crowded Democratic primary field Thursday. But Biden is not the oldest in the pack. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is 77 and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., is 69.

Should Trump be re-elected, he would be 74 on Jan. 20, 2021—Inauguration Day. Should the presidency go to one of the elder Democrats in the field—Biden would be 78; Sanders would be 79; and Warren would be 71.

Meanwhile, in a wide-ranging interview on “Hannity” Thursday night, Trump dismissed Biden’s candidacy, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe,” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Trump also said that while the former vice president has name recognition, he won’t “be able to do the job.”
