Donald Trump Jr. appears to mock Joe Biden by retweeting doctored video

Donald Trump Jr. appeared to mock Joe Biden by retweeting a doctored video of the former vice president addressing a series of misconduct allegations leveled against him.

Trump Jr., 41, retweeted the 15-second doctored footage of Biden Wednesday in which he acknowledged his tendency toward physical displays of affection and encouragement have made some women uncomfortable and he promised to be “much more mindful” of respecting personal space.

Biden is seen sitting and talking in the doctored video, while a viral photo of the ex-VP placing his hands on the shoulders of former Secretary of Defense Ash Carter’s wife, Stephanie Carter, is seen lurking in the background. The tweet was captioned, “Noooooooo Joe, NOT DURING THE APOLOGY!"

TRUMP JR. CALLS MAINSTREAM  MEDIA 'A BLIGHT ON OUR REPUBLIC'

Following the news, the photographs of Biden with Carter made their way back into the public eye, Carter wrote a post on Medium defending Biden and saying the photos were “misleading.”

“But a still shot taken from a video — misleadingly extracted from what was a longer moment between close friends — sent out in a snarky tweet — came to be the lasting image of that day,” she wrote.

DONALD TRUMP JR. COMPARES BUZZFEED COVERAGE TO CATHOLIC HS CONFRONTATION, SAYS SCHIFF LEAKING

The video was Biden’s first direct comment on what has tripped up his preparations to enter the 2020 Democratic presidential campaign. He did not directly apologize but seemed to be seeking to ease some people's discomfort, which has raised questions about whether he could wage an effective campaign.

Last week, former Nevada Lt. Gov. candidate Lucy Flores accused Biden of inappropriate conduct during a 2014 campaign event, saying Biden “plant[ed] a big slow kiss on the back of my head.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

UK public inflation expectations hold at highest since 2013: BoE

April 8, 2019

LONDON (Reuters) – The British public’s expectations for the level of inflation over the coming year remained at their highest in five years, while the proportion expecting interest rates to rise has fallen, Bank of England data showed on Monday.

British people surveyed in February expect inflation to average 3.2 percent over the next 12 months, unchanged from November’s survey which was the highest reading since November 2013, according to the quarterly BoE survey.

Some 47 percent of the more than 4,000 people surveyed expect the Bank of England to raise interest rates over the next 12 months, down from 53 percent in November.

British consumer price inflation edged up to 1.9 percent in February after touching a two-year low of 1.8 percent in January, and the BoE forecast in February that inflation is likely to rise slightly above its 2 percent target this year.

However, the BoE has warned that a disruptive, no-deal Brexit would likely weaken sterling and push inflation sharply higher.

Exclusive: Chinese EV car maker NIO restricts its IPO banks from working for rivals – sources

March 29, 2019

By Julia Fioretti and Kane Wu

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker NIO Inc has blocked the eight top investment banks that did its IPO from working for rivals by tying them up in rare year-long non-compete clauses, several people with direct knowledge of the matter said.

The move highlights the fierce competition between China’s EV makers as they seek the capital needed to survive in a fast-growing market, also the world’s largest.

NIO, for its initial public offering in September, had hired Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley and UBS.

These were also the top eight banks worldwide for equity sales in 2018, according to Refinitiv data.

The non-compete clause prevents them from helping NIO’s rivals raise public or private funds for 12 months following the IPO, the sources said, declining to be named as they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

NIO and the banks declined to comment.

The list of rivals covered by the restrictions included up to 10 names, although it may have varied between the individual agreements, the people said.

Xpeng Motors and WM Motor were on that list, three sources said. A separate source said the list included those two and Byton, among others.

NIO’s non-compete demands were particularly restrictive both in their breadth and duration, several sources said.

Typically such deals restrict banks from working with rivals until the transaction closes or for a shorter period such as six months, two of the sources said.

“Issuers sometimes don’t like it when you’re doing an IPO for the competitors on a concurrent timetable because they will worry that you might divulge information to the benefit of the other clients,” said Stephen Chan, partner at law firm Dechert LLP, speaking about general industry practices.

One banker involved in the NIO deal said his bank had lost mandates because of the non-compete clause.

Adding to the banks’ frustration, they had signed up to NIO’s demands when the IPO was expected to raise about double the $1 billion it actually brought in – meaning banks would initially have expected a much larger payout.

“It would have been interesting in hindsight seeing if it could have got the same agreement with people knowing what the actual valuation was going to be,” a senior banker who worked on the deal said.

EV CAPITAL-RAISING RUSH

NIO’s move comes at a time when many Chinese EV makers are considering IPOs or have launched private fundraisings as China cuts the subsidies it has historically offered as part of its efforts to curb pollution.

On Wednesday, China said it had raised its standards for NEVs that qualify for subsidies and reduced the amount it was willing to provide.

In January, Byton was seeking to raise at least $500 million to finance its growth, people familiar with the matter told Reuters at the time.

Earlier this month, WM Motor announced it closed its Series C funding round of 3 billion yuan ($446.16 million).

Reuters reported on Friday that Leap Motor, a smaller EV maker, was seeking a private fundraising of 2.5 billion yuan, advised by Deutsche Bank.

NIO itself did not stop with its IPO.

In January, it sold a $750 million convertible bond to plug the gap between the money it raised in its IPO and what it had expected to raise.

Canada lawmaker says Trudeau’s warning against white supremacy is ethnic attack

FILE PHOTO: Maxime Bernier watches during the Conservative Party of Canada leadership convention in Toronto

By Steve Scherer

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Maxime Bernier, the founder of a right-wing party running in Canada’s October federal election, said on Monday that Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s warnings about the dangers of white supremacy were an attack on an “entire ethnicity.”

Bernier, a former Cabinet minister who quit the Conservative Party last year to form his own faction called the People’s Party of Canada, has focused on limiting immigration and promoting free trade.

His comments on Monday were in reference to last week’s move by the Trudeau government to change a report on terrorist threats in Canada that was first published last year to no longer explicitly mention “Sikh extremism.”

“We’re told the word Sikh was removed because ‘entire religions should never be equated with terrorism.’ And yet, (Trudeau) has been warning us for weeks about the dangers of ‘white supremacy,’ equating an entire ethnicity with terrorism,” Bernier wrote on Twitter and Facebook.

“Hypocrite! It’s all about pandering for votes,” he wrote.

Trudeau’s office declined to comment, but Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale’s office condemned the statement.

“While the vast majority of Canadians celebrate our country’s diversity, toxic elements continue to peddle vile, hateful intolerance,” Goodale’s spokesman, Scott Bardsley, said in an email.

“We condemn Mr. Bernier’s attempt to legitimize them. All political leaders have a responsibility to denounce hatred and intolerance, not court them,” he added.

The Public Safety Ministry said the number of police-reported hate crimes in Canada jumped 47 percent in 2017, the most recent year for which there are official data.

While Canadian politics are not as polarized as those in the United States, there are indications, especially online, of increasing intolerance in Canada, which has a tradition of openness and welcoming immigrants from around the world.

Trudeau attacked Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer in parliament last month for not explicitly condemning white supremacy after the mass shooting at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Opinion polls show that Liberals have lost ground to Conservatives in recent months, with Scheer’s party taking the lead. Scheer defeated Bernier for the Conservative leadership in 2017.

The People’s Party would win 0.5 percent of the national vote if it were held now instead of October, a Nanos Research poll showed last week.

Jurors weigh case of dad accused of tossing girl off bridge

Jurors are deliberating the fate of a Florida man accused of throwing his 5-year-old daughter off a Tampa Bay area bridge.

The panel of seven men and five women was sent home after two hours on Monday evening. They returned Tuesday morning to continue weighing the case of John Jonchuck.

During closing arguments on Tuesday, prosecutors said Jonchuck knew what he was doing when he dropped Phoebe Jonchuck 62 feet (18 meters) to her death four years ago. Defense attorneys say Jonchuck was insane at the time.

Jonchuck faces life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder. Jurors also could find him not guilty by reason of insanity and the judge could send him to a mental health center, where he could eventually be released if doctors deem him fit.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen’s resignation letter

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned Sunday. Read the letter she submitted to President Trump below.

Mr. President,

I hereby resign from the position of Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), effective April 7th 2019. It has been my great honor to lead the men and women of the Department as its sixth Secretary. I could not be prouder of and more humbled by their service, dedication, and commitment to keep our country safe from all threats and hazards. I join all Americans in thanking them for their sacrifices and those of their families.

For more than two years of service beginning during the Presidential Transition, I have worked tirelessly to advance the goals and missions of the Department. I am immensely proud of our successes in transforming DHS to keep pace with our enemies and adversaries — whether it is in cyberspace or against emerging threats from new technologies.

Despite our progress in reforming homeland security for a new age, I have determined that it is the right time for me to step aside. I hope that the next Secretary will have the support of Congress and the courts in fixing the laws which have impeded our ability to fully secure America’s borders and which have contributed to discord in our nation’s discourse. Our country - and the men and women of DHS - deserve to have all the tools and resources they need to execute the mission entrusted to them.

I can say with confidence our homeland is safer today than when I joined the Administration. We have taken unprecedented action to protect Americans. We have implemented historic efforts to defend our borders, combat illegal immigration, obstruct the inflow of drugs, and uphold our laws and values. We have responded decisively to record-breaking natural disasters and helped Americans rebuild. We have prevented the disruption of U.S. elections and guarded against foreign interference in our democracy. We have replaced complacency with consequences in cyberspace, we are holding digital intruders accountable, and we are stepping up our protection of American networks. We have thwarted terrorist plotting against our homeland and launched new efforts to block terrorists and criminals from reaching our shores. And we have ramped up security measures to make it harder for our enemies and adversaries to attack us, whether it is with drones, chemical and biological weapons, or through other means.

Thank you again for the privilege to serve the American people and to lead the outstanding men and women of the Department of Homeland Security. Supporting these patriots has been the honor of a lifetime.

Sincerely
Kirstjen M. Nielsen
Secretary of Homeland Security

Steve Bannon says a Harris-O’Rourke ticket has ‘best shot’ against Trump in 2020

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon believes a Democratic ticket of U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris of California and former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas has the best shot to unseat President Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

Bannon made his claim Friday during an interview with CNBC. But he also said he believes Trump will likely be re-elected.

"I think the best they're going to have, and I don't think these people will defeat him, I think a combination ... of [Kamala] Harris for president and Beto O'Rourke for VP is a way to mobilize their base and give it the best shot," Bannon said on CNBC's "Squawk Box."

Neither candidate has suggested possible running mates.

The Democratic field for the 2020 presidential election is packed with at least a dozen candidates. Speculation is still mounting over whether former Vice President Joe Biden will launch a White House bid.

Bannon said that if no clear candidate has broken out of the pack that can take on Trump “one-on-one” by the fall of 2019, Democrats may have to bring back Hillary Clinton, Politico reported.

"People should not count her out," he said. "She's going to be sitting in the bullpen waiting for the call."

Trump has already launched an offensive against his potential rivals, Bannon said, taking verbal jabs at U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.

"She's probably got some of the most well-formed policy positions, particularly in comparison to some of the other candidates on the left," Bannon said. "He's basically blown her up already. She's in single digits, and I don't think she'll break out."

Trump has also bashed O’Rourke for his hand movements during his candidacy announcement.

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – The grounding of India’s Jet Airways is turning into a quick windfall and long-term opportunity for international airlines keen to scoop up nearly a million outbound passengers from what was once the nation’s biggest airline.

Jet, which previously had a fleet of around 120 largely Boeing Co planes, was forced to indefinitely halt all flight operations on April 17 after its banks rejected the carrier’s plea for emergency funds.

The carrier’s descent into crisis has benefited international airlines in the form of rising fares and demand, data showed.

Fares from India to cities such as Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Bali in the first quarter of 2019 rose between 4 percent and 32 percent from a year ago, according to Indian travel portal MakeMyTrip Ltd.

In the peak travel months of May and June, fares to London have spiked as much as 36 percent and tickets to San Francisco are up nearly 20 percent from a year ago, according to data from travel portal Yatra.com.

“For the next three months it’s actually bonanza time for international players,” said Ashish Nainan, a research analyst at CARE Ratings. “At least until the middle of June, the fares are not going to come down.”

Due to rising demand, even before Jet’s lessors grounded planes, carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines Ltd and United Airlines saw an up to a 27 percent increase in passenger numbers from India in the last quarter of 2018, data from India’s aviation regulator showed. That is the latest period for which the data is available.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, clocking 15-20 percent domestic growth in recent years. It has long had only two full-service long-haul carriers, state-run Air India and Jet.

Jet is now hoping to be bailed out by a new investor, with final bids due on May 10.

INCREASING CAPACITY

Before its grounding, Jet had the biggest share of India’s outbound international air traffic, carrying 12 percent of the 7.8 million passengers headed overseas in the Oct-Dec quarter, down from 14 percent a year earlier, data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.

For an interactive graphic on Jet’s market share, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2WvDQYi

For an interactive graphic on average daily flights by the airline, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2FeFDel

The total number of passengers traveling overseas with Jet fell 10 percent during the last quarter of 2018 even as the outbound travel market grew about 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines posted a 27 percent increase in passengers from India, Cathay registered 17 percent growth and British Airways saw a 10 percent rise in the same period.

Cathay said the events at Jet combined with increasing demand for travel had led it to deploy larger aircraft with more seats on some Indian routes.

“In the long term we would certainly like to be able to offer more capacity into India, not just on our existing routes but by establishing new services to secondary cities,” Cathay said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines, in an email to Reuters, said the Indian market is “very promising” but declined to give details of airfare levels or demand patterns in the wake of Jet’s exit, citing a quiet period before the release of its annual results.

DOMESTIC GAINS

Jet’s grounding has also had a big impact on the domestic market, with inter-city air fares to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata soaring more than 20 percent in May and June, according to Yatra.com.

The spike in fares is expected to underpin strong earnings for IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd, which are set to report results for the quarter ended March 31 in the coming weeks.

“Domestic Indian carriers are the main benefactors, but I suspect if Jet fails to be revived by May 10 then Vistara and other airlines that ply international routes, particularly the lucrative Gulf market, are the main winners,” said Shukor Yusof, the head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics. Vistara is a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

Inadequate bilateral traffic rights between India and other countries, however, could be an impediment to foreign carriers’ hopes of winning business lost by Jet, some analysts said.

“Even before Jet’s operational shutdown, international capacity was significantly constrained,” said Kapil Kaul, CEO for South Asia of consultancy CAPA. “We have now more serious capacity challenge … this is unlikely to be stabilized in the near term.”

A new national government likely to be in place sometime after elections end in May is expected to address the international capacity constraints, and once bilateral agreements are eased airlines including Emirates, Turkish and Qatar would immediately benefit, said Kaul.

“We would love to add more flights but we are at the limit of the allocation granted to us for traffic rights,” Emirates Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori told reporters in Dubai on Wednesday.

(Reuters) – AstraZeneca Plc beat first-quarter sales and earnings expectations on Friday as the British drugmaker benefited from a push into cancer drugs and emerging markets including China.

Newer treatments such as lung cancer drug Tagrisso, now the company’s top selling medicine, have helped the drugmaker’s return to growth after years of crumbling sales due to patent losses on older drugs.

Sales in China have shown explosive growth, more than doubling since 2012, but AstraZeneca executives on Friday said that may not be sustained.

“The enormous growth you currently see in China, 28 percent, probably is not sustainable, but we feel very bullish that the growth will continue to be at a pace of between 15 percent and 20 percent,” Ruud Dobber, executive vice president, BioPharma, told Reuters.

Shares of the company were down 0.2 percent at 5,878 pence at 1031 GMT.

The turnaround in AstraZeneca’s fortunes has been powered by a push into cancer treatments led by Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, who saw off a 2014 takeover bid from Pfizer in part by promising annual sales of $45 billion by 2023.

In the first quarter, sales from its oncology unit rose 59 percent to $1.89 billion, accounting for 35 percent of total product sales.

The company has moved deeper into cancer therapy market through wide-ranging deals, including those for immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Last month, it agreed a multi-billion dollar oncology deal with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd.

“We’re reaching that point where after years of having to keep faith, we have actually got something tangible to believe in,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett said.

AstraZeneca also backed its annual sales and earnings forecast and said it has extensively prepared for UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union, even in the event of a no-deal exit.

The company has already spent more than 40 million pounds ($52 million) on Brexit preparations, including stockpiling six weeks’ worth of drugs in the UK and four weeks in continental Europe to guard against shortages.

AstraZeneca said product sales rose 14 percent at constant currency to $5.47 billion in the quarter, led by its lung cancer drug Tagrisso and respiratory treatment Pulmicort.

China sales increased by 28 percent to $1.24 billion in the quarter, accounting for nearly a quarter of overall product sales.

Core earnings came in at 89 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts on average were expecting core earnings of 85 cents per share and product sales of $5.29 billion, according to a company provided consensus of 19 analysts.

It’s the type of crime that doesn’t happen every day.

Police in the suburbs of Philadelphia say three suspects broke into a medical facility in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, last Saturday and fled with 18 colonoscopies – devices used for examining the health of patients’ colons.

The devices were reportedly worth a total of about $450,000, authorities said.

But police were perplexed about what the suspects might have planned to do with the instruments.

“This is not something that a typical pawn shop might accept,” Lower Merion Police Detective Sergeant Michael Vice told Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV. “My feeling would be that it was some type of black market sales.”

Such a market apparently does exist, Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath told Philly.com.

“They appeared to know precisely where to go, and they pried the door open,” McGrath said of the suspects, who were captured on surveillance video leaving the facility, carrying bulging backpacks.

Police are hoping the suspects will be caught in the end.
