Gobert helps Jazz slam past Suns

NBA: Phoenix Suns at Utah Jazz

March 26, 2019

Rudy Gobert scored a season-high 27 points and collected 10 rebounds to lead the Utah Jazz to a 125-92 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Monday night.

Gobert broke the NBA single season dunk record while picking up his 59th double-double of the season.

Derrick Favors and Ricky Rubio added 18 points apiece for the Jazz. Utah won for the seventh time in eight games. As a team, the Jazz shot 55.8 percent from the field and outscored Phoenix 70-32 in the paint.

Devin Booker scored a season-high 59 points on 19-for-34 shooting to lead the Suns. Booker also went 16 of 17 from the free throw line. It wasn’t enough to prevent Phoenix from losing for the seventh time in the last nine games.

Utah used a 10-0 run to surge ahead of Phoenix 20-14 late in the first quarter. Rubio sparked the run with a pair of free throws and a basket. Both teams shot 50 percent from the field in the quarter, but the Jazz gained an edge after going 8 of 8 from the free-throw line.

Things spiraled out of control for the Suns during the second quarter. Utah opened the quarter on a 19-4 run highlighted by 3-pointers from Mitchell, Kyle Korver and Jae Crowder. Mitchell finished off the run with back-to-back baskets that gave the Jazz a 45-25 lead.

Booker scored 18 of his team’s 22 points in the second quarter. He helped the Suns cut the deficit to 49-38 at one point.

Joe Ingles drained a 3-pointer and then Rubio and Gobert followed with back-to-back baskets to keep Phoenix from cutting the lead to single digits. Gobert’s basket and free throw put the Jazz up 57-40.

Utah held onto its double-digit lead throughout the second half.

Factbox: Who will succeed Carney to run Britain’s central bank?

FILE PHOTO: The Governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney leaves after a news conference at the Bank of England in London

April 24, 2019

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain is searching for a new governor of the Bank of England to succeed Mark Carney in early 2020.

Finance minister Philip Hammond is hoping that concerns about Brexit will not deter potential applicants.

Below are possible contenders to run the BoE which oversees the world’s fifth-biggest economy and its huge finance industry.

ANDREW BAILEY

The former deputy BoE governor was tipped by analysts as Carney’s most likely successor. But delays to the search, after Carney extended his time in London, have raised questions about whether Hammond sees him as the best candidate.

Bailey, 60, was deputy governor with a focus on banks before becoming chief executive of the Financial Conduct Authority, a markets regulator.

While at the BoE, Bailey helped to steer Britain’s banks through the global financial crisis.

Heading the FCA is fraught with risks. Lawmakers criticised Bailey for not publishing all of a report into alleged misconduct by bank RBS. Bailey cited privacy restrictions.

As FCA boss, Bailey sits on important panels at the BoE that oversee banks. Although he has never been interest-rate setter, he once ran the BoE international economic analysis team.

RAGHURAM RAJAN

Rajan, 56, headed the Reserve Bank of India from 2013 to 2016, and was chief economist at the International Monetary Fund between 2003 and 2006 when he warned of the risk of a financial crisis.

Now a professor at Chicago Booth business school, Rajan has published a book on dissatisfaction with markets and the state – touching on some of the underlying issues behind Brexit.

Rajan unexpectedly did not seek a renewal of his three-year term at the RBI, having faced hostility from some sections of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP party who disliked his less nationalist stance and brief forays into political territory.

Rajan declined to comment when asked by Reuters last week whether he would consider a return to active policymaking.

MINOUCHE SHAFIK

Egyptian-born Shafik, 57, was a BoE deputy governor between 2014 and 2017, in charge of markets and banking, including the central bank’s asset purchase programme. She quit the job early to become director of the London School of Economics.

Between 2008 and 2011 she was the top civil servant at Britain’s ministry for overseas aid and was then deputy managing director at the International Monetary Fund, where she represented the fund in the Greek debt crisis.

Shafik would become the first woman to head the BoE, and was only its second female deputy governor.

BEN BROADBENT AND DAVE RAMSDEN

Broadbent, 54, and Ramsden, 55, are deputy governors for monetary policy and for markets and banking respectively.

Broadbent, a former Goldman Sachs economist who trained as a classical pianist, is respected for his economic analysis but has less experience on banking oversight.

Ramsden was the Treasury’s chief economic advisor.

The two other BoE deputy governors, Jon Cunliffe and Sam Woods, are less likely contenders. Woods focuses mostly on financial regulation while Cunliffe – a former British ambassador to the European Union – would be aged 66 at the start of the term which usually runs for eight years.

SHRITI VADERA

Vadera, 56, has no central banking experience but is seen as a contender due to her current role as non-executive chairwoman of Santander UK, one of Britain’s biggest banks, and her time as a junior business minister during the financial crisis.

Vadera served as a minister from 2007 to 2009 after a career in investment banking and a period at the finance ministry.

In 2008, she was part of a small group of ministers and officials who devised a plan worth hundreds of billions of pounds in loan guarantees to keep high-street banks in business.

ANDY HALDANE

The BoE’s chief economist, Haldane has developed a reputation for floating unconventional ideas, including the possibility that music apps such as Spotify and multiplayer online games might give central bankers just as a good a sense of what is going on in the economy as traditional surveys.

In 2012, he praised the anti-capitalist Occupy movement for suggesting new ways to fix the shortcomings of global finance. Haldane has experience of both sides of the BoE, having served as executive director for financial stability, overseeing the risks to the economy from the banking system. But he might be seen as too much of a maverick to take the job of governor.

A LABOUR PARTY GOVERNOR?

The prospect of the left-wing Labour Party taking power has grown as Prime Minister Theresa May struggles to break the Brexit impasse.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and his would-be finance minister John McDonnell are socialists and have in the past proposed that the BoE should fund investment in infrastructure, a big change from its current focus on inflation.

Former members of Labour’s economic advisory committee included U.S. academic and Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz and Ann Pettifor, a British economist who is an austerity critic, and former BoE rate-setter David Blanchflower.

The Latest: Body of Pakistani victim Ahmed returned home

The Latest on the mosque attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand (all times local):

7 p.m.

The body of a 26-year-old Pakistani who was among 50 worshippers killed during attacks on mosques in New Zealand has arrived at an airport in the southern port city of Karachi.

Syed Areeb Ahmed was among nine Pakistanis who were killed on March 15 when a white supremacist shot people inside two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.

On Monday, his sobbing father Syed Ayaz Ahmed, family members and government officials received his body.

Ahmed was an only son who had immigrated to New Zealand for work, according to his uncle Muhammad Muzaffar Khan.

Last week, Pakistan observed a day of mourning for the victims and honored another Pakistani, Naeem Rashid, who died along with his son after trying to tackle the gunman.

___

3 p.m.

New Zealand's prime minister has announced a top-level inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the massacre of 50 people in two Christchurch mosques.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the country's highest form of investigation, a royal commission of inquiry, was appropriate for "matters of the gravest public importance."

Her Cabinet had previously agreed on holding an inquiry, but had not decided what kind of investigation would be held.

She said the Cabinet agreed Monday a royal commission of inquiry "will look at what could have or should have been done to prevent the attack."

An Australian white supremacist has been charged with murder for the March 15 attacks.

Chinese food-to-ticketing app Meituan Dianping sees losses widen in fourth quarter

March 11, 2019

By Josh Horwitz

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – China’s Meituan Dianping, an online food delivery-to-ticketing firm, said its fourth-quarter operating loss more than doubled as fast revenue growth was offset by sharply rising labor costs as it took on more staff.

The company, which is backed by tech giant Tencent Holdings Ltd and listed on the stock market last September, said its revenue grew 89 percent in October-December to 19.8 billion yuan ($2.9 billion).

Food orders made up the majority of sales in the quarter, as they did in the third quarter and the company reported a growing user base and increasing gross merchandise volume for its delivery service. However, these gains were offset by having to pay higher labor costs as order volumes jumped.

As a result, Meituan reported a net loss of 3.4 billion yuan for the quarter ended Dec. 31, increasing from a 2.2 billion yuan loss in the year-earlier period.

The company, which raised $4.2 billion in its IPO, faces stiff competition from rivals such as Alibaba Group Holding Ltd’s delivery platform Ele.me and also ride-hailing firm Didi Chuxing, backed by Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp.

Meituan said its overall transaction volume grew 32.5 percent in the fourth quarter from a year earlier.

Meituan is a so-called super app, offering many services and is a sort of cross between U.S. discounting platform Groupon Inc and online review firm Yelp Inc.

Revenues from “New Initiatives and others” which includes Meituan’s bike-sharing division Mobike and its new ride-hailing service, made up 21.2 percent of total sales.

Meituan’s September IPO was seen by some as a gauge of China’s tech sector, which seemed poised for a slowdown after years of rising stock prices and free-flowing venture capital funding. But its stock has since lost nearly a fifth of its value.

Tencent, which is due to report fourth-quarter results later this month, has seen slowing revenue growth over the last four quarters while companies such as JD.com and Didi Chuxing have announced layoffs in recent months.

Florida dad who dropped daughter off bridge claims insanity

A jury has been selected in the murder trial of a Florida man who threw his 5-year-old daughter off a Tampa bridge.

It took a week for lawyers to agree on 12 jurors and four alternates to decide the fate of 29-year-old John Jonchuck.

Prosecutors are slated for opening statements at 1 p.m. Monday at the Pinellas County Courthouse.

No one disputes that Jonchuck dropped his daughter Phoebe 62 feet (18 meters) into Tampa Bay on Jan. 8, 2015, and prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty. If convicted of first-degree murder, he'll automatically go to prison for life.

Jonchuck's lawyers are using an insanity defense. They must convince jurors his mental illness was so severe that he didn't know what he was doing.

Rep. Ilhan Omar accuses President Trump of lying about “border crisis,” calls wall “monument to racism”

Controversial freshman congresswoman Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., responded to a tweet from President Trump Wednesday by accusing him of “lying about the border” and calling the often debated border wall a “monument to racism.”

“This is a fake emergency! Donald Trump is lying about the border in order to build his monument to racism,” Omar tweeted Wednesday.

Omar was responding to a tweet by Trump calling on Congress to “eliminate the loopholes” and saying if they don’t act, he would close “large sections” of the border.

NIELSEN: IT'S A 'CAT 5' IMMIGRATION CRISIS

“Congress must get together and immediately eliminate the loopholes at the Border! If no action, Border, or large sections of Border, will close. This is a National Emergency!,” the president tweeted.

The president has threatened to close the border this week, prompting outrage from Democrats, and called on Mexico to help prevent illegal immigration by using its own “strong” immigration laws. He also threatened to shut down aid to three Central American countries.

Omar, in just her fourth month in Congress has become a lightning rod for controversy.

Last February, she was accused of tweeting anti-Semitic and anti-Israeli messages, then re-ignited the flames in March when she once again suggested that groups supportive of Israel were pushing members of Congress to have "allegiance to a foreign country."

The backlash resulted in a watered-down resolution condemning hatred that was originally aimed at Omar.

The president during that time called on Omar to resign from Congress.

HOUSE PASSES BROAD RESOLUTION DENOUNCING RACISM WITHOUT NAMING REP. OMAR

Last month, she reportedly made comments critical of former President Barack Obama, suggesting he was a “pretty face” who got away with “murder.”

Omar then disputed the comments, saying the interviewer from Politico ‘distorted’ her comments, then releasing audio.

However, many journalists defended the characterizations and said Omar’s audio actually proved the opposite.

Just this week the Minnesota’s Campaign Finance Board announced it was wrapping up an investigation into whether Omar used campaign funds improperly, including $6,000 dollars on a divorce attorney and personal travel.

It’s the type of crime that doesn’t happen every day.

Police in the suburbs of Philadelphia say three suspects broke into a medical facility in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, last Saturday and fled with 18 colonoscopies – devices used for examining the health of patients’ colons.

The devices were reportedly worth a total of about $450,000, authorities said.

But police were perplexed about what the suspects might have planned to do with the instruments.

“This is not something that a typical pawn shop might accept,” Lower Merion Police Detective Sergeant Michael Vice told Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV. “My feeling would be that it was some type of black market sales.”

Such a market apparently does exist, Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath told Philly.com.

“They appeared to know precisely where to go, and they pried the door open,” McGrath said of the suspects, who were captured on surveillance video leaving the facility, carrying bulging backpacks.

Police are hoping the suspects will be caught in the end.

BEIJING (Reuters) – British finance minister Philip Hammond said on Friday that he had a “very constructive meeting” with his counterpart in the opposition Labour Party before leaving for Beijing and that he was optimistic about finding common ground.

Hammond, speaking on the sidelines of a summit on China’s Belt and Road initiative in Beijing, said talks with Labour aimed at finding a way forward on Brexit had not stalled.

“I’m optimistic that we will find common ground,” he said. “Both sides have got clear positions and both sides will have to compromise in order to reach an agreement.”

Hammond added that he absolutely did not favor a no deal exit from the European Union.

NICOSIA (Reuters) – Cypriot police searched on Friday for more victims of a suspected serial killer, in a case which has shocked the Mediterranean island and exposed the authorities to charges of “criminal indifference” because the dead women were foreigners.

The main opposition party, the left-wing AKEL, called for the resignation of Cyprus’s justice minister and police chief.

Police were combing three different locations west of the capital Nicosia for victims of the suspected killer, a 35-year-old army officer who has been in detention for a week.

The bodies of three women, including two thought to be from the Philippines, have been recovered. Police sources said the suspect had indicated the location of the third body, found on Thursday, and had said the person was “either Indian or Nepali”.

Police said they were searching for a further four people, including two children, based on the suspect’s testimony.

“These women came here to earn a living, to help their families. They lived away from their families. And the earth swallowed them, nobody was interested,” AKEL lawmaker Irene Charalambides told Reuters.

“This killer will be judged by the court but the other big question is the criminal indifference shown by the others when the reports first surfaced. I believe, as does my party, that the justice minister and the police chief should resign. They are irrevocably exposed.”

Police have said they will investigate any perceived shortcomings in their handling of the case.

One person who did attempt to alert the authorities over the disappearances, a 70-year-old Cypriot citizen, said his motives were questioned by police.

The bodies of the two Filipino women reported missing in May and August 2018 were found in an abandoned mine shaft this month. Police discovered the body of the third woman at an army firing range about 14 km (9 miles) from the mine shaft.

Police are now searching for the six-year-old daughter of the first victim found, a Romanian mother who disappeared with her eight-year-old child in 2016, and a woman from the Phillipines who vanished in Dec. 2017.

The suspect has not been publicly named, in line with Cypriot legal practice.

A public vigil for the missing was planned later on Friday.

LONDON, April 26 – British factories stockpiled raw materials and goods ahead of Brexit at the fastest pace since records began in the 1950s, and they were increasingly downbeat about their prospects, a survey showed on Friday.

The Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) quarterly survey of the manufacturing industry showed expectations for export orders in the next three months fell to their lowest level since mid-2009, when Britain was reeling from the global financial crisis.

The record pace of stockpiling recorded by the CBI was mirrored by the closely-watched IHS Markit/CIPS purchasing managers’ index published earlier this month.

Nearly a week later, even after the cleaners have come through, the blood can still be seen clearly. The statues of Jesus and the saints are still speckled with fragments of shrapnel. The smell of death is everywhere, though the bodies are long gone.

Yet somehow, there’s a beauty to St. Sebastian’s, a neighborhood church in a Catholic enclave north of Sri Lanka’s capital, where a man calmly walked in during Easter services with a heavy backpack and blew himself up.

You can see the beauty in the broken stained-glass windows. It’s there as the sun shines through the roof’s gaping holes. It’s there in the little statues that refused to fall over, and despite the swarms of police and soldiers who seem to be everywhere now in the streets of the seaside town of Negombo.

For more than 50 years, St. Sebastian’s had been the scene of weddings and baptisms, of Christmas celebrations and countless Masses.

It’s still not clear exactly how many died Sunday at the Negombo church, but perhaps nearly half of the roughly 250 people killed in the Easter bombings that targeted churches and high-end hotels. Authorities say a once-obscure militant Muslim group carried out the attacks.

In a largely Buddhist country, Negombo is mostly Catholic town with dozens of churches. For days, it has been in mourning.

St. Sebastian’s walls are now blackened near where the bomber stood when he killed himself, spraying shrapnel in every direction. From inside, you see destruction wherever you look.

But from outside the church, if you ignore the police tape and if you’re standing far enough away, you might think nothing had happened there at all.

You might think St. Sebastian’s is a place known only for weddings and baptisms, for Christmas celebrations and countless Masses.
