Irish authorities find parcel bomb similar to UK packages

Authorities in Ireland say a parcel bomb found at an Irish postal depot appears identical to a series of devices sent to Britain earlier this month.

Irish leader Leo Varadkar said it was found at a return mail office in Limerick. The Irish police, the Garda, called military bomb disposal experts after the package was discovered Friday morning.

Irish Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan says a stamp on the package was similar to small letter bombs sent to the U.K. earlier this month.

Those devices had been designed to cause fires at Waterloo rail station in central London, offices at Heathrow and London City airports, and the University of Glasgow. One of the devices partially burned when opened.

An Irish dissident group claimed responsibility.

Kamala Harris backtracks, now says criminals like Boston bomber ‘should be deprived’ of right to vote

U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., is now backtracking after initially saying “we should have that conversation” about allowing criminals currently in prison -- such as the Boston Marathon bomber -- to vote.

Appearing at a televised town hall event following 2020 Democratic frontrunner Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. -- who made headlines by advocating for voting rights for felons serving time. -- Harris was also asked to weigh in.

“I think we should have that conversation,” Harris told CNN anchor Don Lemon.

GUTFELD ON BERNIE SANDERS LETTING FELONS VOTE FROM PRISON

Well, that conversation appears to have ended.

Sanders had said that those convicted of sexual assault and of crimes like terrorism -- like Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev -- should be able to vote in order for the U.S. to sustain a “vibrant democracy” and to increase voter turnout.

But on Tuesday, while speaking to a press gaggle in New Hampshire, Harris expanded on her remarks at the CNN town hall and gave what her national press secretary Ian Sams called a “thoughtful answer.”

Harris called the issue of allowing felons to vote in prison “complex” and said she was going to “talk to experts” about the matter.

She added that there was “a lot of work to do” regarding 6 million people who are currently in prison without voting rights.

“Do I think that people who commit murder, people who are terrorists should be deprived of their rights? Yeah, I do. I’m a prosecutor,” Harris said. “There has to be serious consequences for the most extreme types of crimes.”

Also during Monday night’s town hall, Harris joined her colleague, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., in calling for President Trump’s impeachment. She also vowed to take executive action on gun control if Congress doesn’t act in her first 100 days in office as president.

Barclays opposes activist Bramson’s demand to be named to board

(Reuters) – Barclays Plc on Thursday opposed activist Sherborne Investors’ demand to name the investor’s founder Edward Bramson to the board of the British bank.

While the bank said it recognized that it does not “yet perform at the level at which it should”, it added that it does not need another strategic overhaul.

Bramson has so far failed in attempts to get the lender to scale back its investment banking activities, which he says have weighed on shareholder returns and run the risk of the bank needing to raise fresh capital.

Sherborne had on Monday written again to shareholders of Barclays seeking to drum up support for the election of Bramson to the bank’s board. It is the third largest shareholder in Barclays with a 5.48 percent stake, according to Refinitiv Eikon data.

Sherborne Investors could not be immediately reached for a comment.

Barclays had first revealed in March last year that Bramson had built a stake in the bank.

While Barclays has said it remains committed to its strategy, Chief Executive Jes Staley last month ousted the head of its investment banking division and instead took direct control of the unit, a move referenced in Sherborne’s latest letter.

Barclays said on Thursday that Bramson’s prior investments and the company’s engagement with him suggest “he would be a disruptive and uncollaborative influence on the board,” adding that he does not possess the banking experience.

The bank said it has and would continue to engage with Bramson, but believes that “Sherborne’s interests are not aligned with the wider shareholder base.”

Barclays is due to hold its annual general meeting of shareholders on May 2.

Timeline: Key events since Thailand's last general election

Thailand will hold its first general election Sunday since the military ousted the elected government in a coup nearly five years ago.

Thailand has a long history of cycling through elected governments that are then ousted by the army, which in time allows fresh elections.

Here's a look the key political events since Thailand's last general election.

_____

July 3, 2011: The Pheu Thai Party led by Yingluck Shinawatra, the sister of fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, wins a landslide majority in the general election. Thaksin was ousted by a 2006 military coup and fled Thailand in 2008 to avoid serving a prison term for a conflict of interest conviction.

Aug. 5, 2011: The House of Representatives elects Yingluck to become Thailand's first female prime minister.

_____

June 2012: Yingluck's ruling party pushes legislation to promote national reconciliation with the stated goal of ending the sometimes violent political conflict that has roiled the country since the 2006 coup. Critics charge it is meant to help Thaksin escape justice and return to Thailand as a free man.

_____

April 2013: The Constitutional Court rules that Yingluck's government cannot make amendments to the 2007 constitution, which was enacted by an interim government that had been installed by the 2006 coup.

Nov. 1, 2013: Mass rally held against bill proposing amnesty for political offenses committed since 2006. The protesters claim its main purpose is to vacate the conflict of interest conviction against Thaksin.

Nov. 24, 2013: As many as 100,000 anti-government protesters rally in Bangkok, demanding that Yingluck's government step down.

Nov. 29, 2014: Veteran Democrat Party politician Suthep Thaugsuban forms the People's Democratic Reform Committee to demand the dissolution of Yingluck's government and the establishment of an unelected "people's council" to reform the country.

Nov. 30, 2013-Jan. 31, 2014: The anti-government protests become increasingly violent, with pitched street battles against the police and forced occupations of government offices and installations that practically immobilized government functions. The army, which used armed force in 2010 to quash aggressive protests by supporters of Thaksin, does not intervene to defend the government.

Dec. 9, 2013: Yingluck dissolves the House of Representatives and calls early elections for Feb. 2, 2014.

Dec. 21, 2013: The opposition Democrat Party announces it will boycott the elections so that reforms of the sort demanded by the protesters can first be enacted.

_____

Feb. 2, 2014: A general election is held but disrupted by anti-government protesters who prevent polling from being held in all areas.

March 21, 2014: The Constitutional Court rules the February election invalid because voting did not take place on the same day nationwide in violation of a constitutional clause. There had been fresh balloting in March in several provinces where protesters had prevented voting on the original election date.

May 7, 2014: The Constitutional Court removes Yingluck and several ministers of her caretaker government for abuse of power in connection with the 2011 transfer of a high-ranking civil servant.

May 8, 2014: National Anti-Corruption Commission finds Yingluck guilty of criminal negligence for implementing a state rice-buying subsidy scheme.

May 22, 2014: Army Commander Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha stages a coup, ousting the government, abrogating the constitution and outlawing political gatherings. He later becomes prime minister in addition to heading the ruling junta.

_____

Aug 7, 2016: A national referendum approves a new constitution drafted under the auspices of the ruling junta, along with new rules governing how the prime minister is chosen. Campaigning against the proposed charter had been banned.

Oct. 13, 2016: King Bhumibol Adulyadej dies at the age of 88, and a year-long mourning period is declared. He is succeeded by his son, who becomes King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

_____

April. 6, 2017: The new constitution takes effect.

Oct. 26, 2017: Cremation rites are held for the late king.

_____

Jan. 23, 2019: The Election Commission announces the general election will be held on March 24, after several earlier target dates had been pushed back.

Feb. 8, 2019: The Thaksin-affiliated Thai Raksa Chart Party registers the king's elder sister, Princess Ubolratana Mahidol, as its candidate for prime minister, breaking with the idea that members of the royal family are above politics. That same day, the king issues a royal order calling her registration inappropriate and contrary to the constitution.

March 8, 2019: The Constitutional Court dissolves the Thai Raksa Chart Party for registering the princess as its candidate for prime minister.

March 24, 2019: Thailand is scheduled to hold general election.

Indian regional party ties up with Modi’s BJP for general election

MUMBAI (Reuters) – A hardline Hindu nationalist group in western India will partner with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in coming elections after agreeing a seat-sharing plan in Maharashtra state, the parties said on Monday.

The tie-up with the Shiv Sena, a partner in the governing coalition led by the BJP, is a boost to Modi as he seeks alliances ahead of the general election, which is due to be held by May. The Shiv Sena had said last year it would contest the election on its own.

In Maharashtra state, the Shiv Sena and the BJP would contest 23 and 25 seats respectively, state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also a member of the BJP, told a news conference in Mumbai, the state capital and the country’s financial capital, where the Shiv Sena is headquartered.

The Shiv Sena enjoys considerable political clout across Maharashtra. Like the BJP, it believes India is a fundamentally Hindu nation, despite the country’s secular constitution.

Maharashtra sends 48 lawmakers to parliament, second only to northern Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state, which elects 80 lawmakers.

“We have entered into the alliance to keep the opposition parties out,” Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray said.

Modi’s BJP has been scrambling to make an alliance with regional parties for the general election, which pollsters say could produce a fractured mandate.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), traditional political rivals in Uttar Pradesh, last month forged an alliance in an effort to defeat the BJP.

In a fillip to opposition parties, the BJP lost power in three states in December, dealing Modi his biggest defeat since he took office in 2014.

Elizabeth Warren sprints to catch New York City train in viral video: 'Try and keep up'

Like a typical New Yorker, Sen. Elizabeth Warren was seen sprinting to catch a train at New York City's Penn Station — surprising at least one reporter who struggled to keep up.

The 2020 presidential hopeful didn't have much time to answer a TMZ reporter's questions Monday afternoon, as she was concerned about missing her scheduled train. The Democratic senator from Massachusetts was in New York for an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," which aired later that night.

"You're the fastest presidential nominee that's ever ... run for a train," the reporter joked as he filmed Warren.

ELIZABETH WARREN TELLS COLBERT SHE DOESN’T TRUST AG BARR’S MUELLER SUMMARY, WANTS FULL REPORT MADE PUBLIC

In a two-minute video published by TMZ, Warren can be seen running into Penn Station from 8th Avenue and down the stairs, even as the TMZ reporter tried to keep up.

“Hi how are you,” she can be heard saying in the video. She also quickly apologized as she rushed past the reporter: “Sorry, I’m running for a train.”

When she arrived in the station and the reporter had caught up, she answered some of his questions about the campaign and Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s newly released report on his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The senator hardly seemed out of breath as she reiterated that Mueller’s report should be made public, though she added that voters aren’t as interested in the special counsel’s findings as they are about other issues.

WARREN MAY BE TOO WONKISH TO CONNECT TO VOTERS, SOME SAY

“I just spent the last two days doing public events in New Hampshire. I took a ton of questions. Do you know how many questions I got about the Mueller report? Zero,” she said in the video, which has been viewed more than 4,000 times on YouTube.

“People want to know about the things that touch their lives every day,” she added, in part, before apologizing for "running off" earlier.

The senator later tweeted at the outlet, which compared her to Olympic sprinter Usain Bolt, saying: “Try and keep up, @TMZ.” The tweet garnered nearly 900 retweets by Tuesday afternoon.

Attorney General William Barr released his summary of Mueller's investigation on Sunday, in which he revealed the investigation found no indication that President Trump or his administration colluded with Russian forces to meddle in the 2016 election or obstruct justice in the years that have followed. Although Mueller also noted his report did not "exonerate" Trump on obstruction, Barr wrote, the "report does not recommend any further indictments, nor did the Special Counsel obtain any sealed indictments that have yet to be made public."

The House of Representatives voted unanimously 420-0 that the Mueller's report — not just Barr's summary — should be made public upon its completion. On Monday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blocked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's attempt to unanimously pass the non-binding measure without a roll call vote. The passage of the measure was previously challenged by Sen. Lindsey Graham, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, earlier this month.

April 26, 2019

By James Davey

LONDON (Reuters) – With Sainsbury’s dream of creating Britain’s biggest supermarket group in tatters, its chastened CEO Mike Coupe needs to reassure investors he has the plan to arrest a sales decline when he presents annual results next week.

Britain’s competition regulator blocked Sainsbury’s 7.3 billion pound ($9.4 billion) takeover of Walmart’s Asda on Thursday, saying the deal would increase prices. Sainsbury’s shares fell 5 percent and are down 22 percent over the last three months.

For Sainsbury’s fourth quarter to March 9 analysts are on average forecasting a 1.6 percent fall in like-for-like sales, which would follow 1.1 percent decline over the Christmas period.

Monthly industry data from researcher Kantar has also shown Sainsbury’s as the weakest performer of the big four grocers this year and this month it lost its status as Britain’s No. 2 supermarket group by market share to Asda.

While Sainsbury’s has struggled, market leader Tesco has gained momentum, this month reporting a 34 percent jump in full year profit.

Prohibition of the deal was a major blow to Coupe, its architect and Sainsbury’s boss since 2014.

Martin Scicluna became Sainsbury’s chairman last month and when bedded-in may decide that if the group needs a major shake-up it is best carried out by a new leader.

Much will depend on the attitude of 22 percent shareholder the Qatar Investment Authority, which has so far declined to comment, as well as Coupe’s own appetite to continue after 15 years at the group.

THE RIGHT STRATEGY?

Coupe said on Thursday he was confident Sainsbury’s was pursuing the right strategy.

That was a clear indication that Wednesday’s results statement will not include radical changes to the group’s plans, such as a big margin reset — sacrificing profit to drive sales.

However, sources connected to Sainsbury’s said Coupe would likely acknowledge that more needs to be done on prices, so the supermarket business can better compete with its big four rivals – Tesco, Asda and No. 4 Morrisons – as well as German-owned discounters Aldi and Lidl.

Coupe’s strategy is based on differentiating Sainsbury’s food offer, growing its general merchandise, clothing business and bank, while investing in convenience and online channels.

Some analysts believe major change is needed.

HSBC analyst David McCarthy reckons Sainsbury’s needs a margin reset, should allocate more space for core lines and needs to drive better store standards. He said Sainsbury’s might consider closing down space in some of its larger stores and reducing its non-food offer.

For the full 2018-19 year analysts are on average forecasting a pretax profit of 626 million pounds, up from 589 million pounds in 2017-18 – a second straight year of profit growth. A full year dividend of 10.5 pence per share is forecast versus 10.2 pence last time.

Bank and lawyer fees related to the proposed combination with Asda were 17 million pounds in the first half and have reportedly jumped to around 50 million pounds.

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada posted a budget surplus in the first 11 months of the 2018/19 fiscal year compared to a deficit the year earlier as revenues increased mostly on higher tax incomes, the finance department said on Friday.

The surplus for April-February was C$3.1 billion, compared to a deficit of C$6 billion in the same 2017/18 period. Revenues climbed by 8.5 percent, mainly due to higher tax receipts, while program expenses rose by 4.8 percent.

The surplus for February was C$4.3 billion compared with C$2.8 billion in February 2018. Revenues jumped by 12.2 percent while program expenses posted a more modest 6.9 percent gain.

Last month, the Liberals unveiled their new budget, projecting a C$14.9 billion deficit in 2018/19, with the deficit rising to C$19.8 billion in fiscal 2019/20.

President Trump said Friday he would beat Joe Biden “easily” in the 2020 presidential election, suggesting the former vice president could not have enough “energy” to hold the post—taking an apparent swipe at his age.

The president, departing the White House, was asked about Biden’s entrance into the Democratic primary field. Biden announced his presidential bid early Thursday morning, marking his third attempt at the White House.

JOE BIDEN OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES 2020 PRESIDENTIAL BID

“I think we’d beat him easily,” Trump told reporters Friday.

Trump, 72, said he feels “young” and is ready for 2020, and another term for his administration.

“I feel like a young man. I am a young, vibrant man,” Trump said. “I look at Joe, I don’t know about him.”

The president’s comments seemingly were a shot at the age of Biden, who is 76.

BIDEN ENTERS WHITE HOUSE RACE WITHOUT OBAMA’S ENDORSEMENT

“I would never say anyone’s too old,” Trump said. “I know they’re all making me look very young both in terms of age and in terms of energy.”

Biden became the 20th candidate to join the crowded Democratic primary field Thursday. But Biden is not the oldest in the pack. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is 77 and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., is 69.

Should Trump be re-elected, he would be 74 on Jan. 20, 2021—Inauguration Day. Should the presidency go to one of the elder Democrats in the field—Biden would be 78; Sanders would be 79; and Warren would be 71.

Meanwhile, in a wide-ranging interview on “Hannity” Thursday night, Trump dismissed Biden’s candidacy, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe,” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Trump also said that while the former vice president has name recognition, he won’t “be able to do the job.”
