Hail pelts northern Texas ‘like a snowstorm,' damaging homes and vehicles

A round of severe thunderstorms moving through North Texas late Sunday blasted the region with damaging hail and left some neighborhoods looking like a winter wonderland.

The National Weather Service said the storms across the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex were fueled by a cold front that brought the risk of "large hail and damaging downburst winds."

The largest hail reports came from the Collin, Denton, and Hopkins Counties located just outside of Dallas.

“It was a good 30, 45 minutes of solid, getting smaller then bigger, golf ball size hail,” Frisco resident Marianne Ganow told FOX4.

The NWS said a preliminary report of the severe hail shows that hailstones measured between 1 inch and 2 inches, with some greater sizes reported, too.

"The largest reported hailstone occurred between Frisco and McKinney and was measured at 2.75 [inches] or about the size of a baseball!" the agency said.

The storms left behind hail that blanketed neighborhoods, and had some people sharing videos on Twitter of the spring scene that resembled something "like a snowstorm."

McKinney resident Ejae Dolor told KTVT that golf ball-sized hail broke her kitchen and car windows as it fell across the county.

“At first you hear a little hail…then it just got worse,” Dolor told the television station. “The hail was getting bigger and bigger."

The hailstorm also left numerous vehicles damaged. One family was seen by FOX4 scooping hail out of the backseat of a Toyota Camry that had its back window damaged.

Alleged College Scammer Co-hosted Gillibrand Fundraiser

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., a 2020 presidential candidate, attended a fundraiser co-hosted by a woman indicted in the college admissions scandal, Page Six reports.

Marketing CEO Jane Buckingham allegedly paid $50,000 for an ACT proctor to take the exam in her son's place so he would get into the University of Southern California. She was charged Tuesday along with 33 other parents in the massive college cheating scandal.

Buckingham also paid $2,800 to be co-host of an event for Gillibrand at the home of Los Angeles FC owner Larry Berg and his wife, Allison, last Saturday.

Other co-hosts included Will Ferrell, Harvard MBA and author Samantha Ettus, "Scandal" creator Shonda Rhimes and her agent Chris Silbermann.

Duterte Vows to Declare War on Canada for Garbage Smuggling

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Tuesday he would send back garbage that came to the Philippines from Canada and threatened to declare war against Ottawa.

“I give a warning to Canada, maybe next week, they better pull their thing up or I will set sail to Canada, I will pour their garbage there,” the president said as quoted by Rappler portal, adding that he would declare war against the North American state if it gave no response.

He also advised Canada to get ready to receive the garbage. The president also ordered the container vans to drop the garbage near the Canadian embassy in Makati. Duterte also threatened to fire the customs personnel who were responsible for letting Canadian trash into the country.

Recently, the Philippines has lashed out at Canada, saying that private importers have been smuggling tonnes of Canadian garbage into the Philippines for several years. Facing protests by environmentalists, Canada nevertheless has refused to have the trash back, justifying it by the authorities’ inability to compel the private shipper to return the garbage.

The garbage reportedly consisted of used adult diapers, newspapers, plastic bottles and bags. According to some experts, the garbage violated international law and went against multiple parts of the Basel Convention, a 30-year-old treaty that prevents countries from shipping hazardous waste to the developing world without government consent.

March 12, 2019

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) – Two former policemen were arrested in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday in connection with the murder of a local councilwoman and her driver, Rio de Janeiro police and prosecutors said.

The operation that resulted in the arrests came on the eve of the first anniversary of the deaths of the councilwoman, Marielle Franco, and Anderson Gomes.

The suspects were identified as Ronnie Lessa, a retired military police officer, and Élcio Vieira de Queiroz, a former policeman who was expelled from the force.

“Two police officers were arrested with a direct and effective participation in the crime,” said Marcus Vinícius Braga, Rio de Janeiro state police secretary. “With the these arrests, we get close to solving the crime.”

Investigators said Lessa fired the shots that killed Franco and Gomes on March 14, 2018, on the north side of Rio. Queiroz drove the car that ambushed them, investigators said.

Franco, an activist for human rights and women’s causes, was a rising star in the Socialism and Liberty Party. Her press secretary, Fernanda Chaves, who was traveling in the same vehicle as Franco and Gomes, suffered minor injuries.

One of the detained policemen lives in the same gated community where Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has a home and lived before being elected last year. The police did not explain whether that had any significance and so far the president has not been tied to the case in any manner.

The president’s press office did not immediately reply to request for comment.

Britain urges ‘stronger measures’ at U.N. if no progress on Yemen’s Hodeidah deal

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The United Nations’ Security Council should consider “stronger measures” if there was no progress in the coming weeks on a deal between Yemen’s warring parties on a key port, Britain said on Monday, as the U.N. mediator admitted it was “taking longer than we had hoped.”

In an illustration of the delay, U.N. Yemen envoy Martin Griffiths told the council both sides had accepted a detailed operational plan for step one in a withdrawal of forces from the Red Sea port and city of Hodeidah – two months after the world body announced an initial deal on that measure.

“Let us be clear that when – and I hope it is when, not if – these redeployments happen they will be the first voluntary withdrawals of forces in this long conflict,” Griffiths told the 15-member council. “Of course it has taken longer than we had hoped but that it should happen at all is extremely welcome.”

The Iran-aligned Houthi movement and the Saudi-backed government initially agreed in December to withdraw troops by Jan. 7 from Hodeidah – a lifeline for millions facing famine – under a truce aimed at averting a full-scale assault on the port and paving the way for negotiations to end the four-year war.

Although the ceasefire agreed for Hodeidah largely holds, violence continues elsewhere and has escalated in recent weeks.

Britain’s U.N. Ambassador Karen Pierce said the lack of implementation of the deal reached in Sweden is “very worrying.”

“The stakes are too high for us to let that fail and the council in our view should be ready to take stronger measures if there’s no progress by our next meeting,” Pierce told the council, which traditionally meets once a month on Yemen.

Griffiths did not say when the first stage of troop withdrawals from Hodeidah could start, adding that talks would continue on phase two of a redeployment and the status of local security forces.

Acting U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Jonathan Cohen warned the Houthis that Washington would be “watching closely to see if they make good on that agreement” to phase one.

“The Yemeni government has demonstrated a clear commitment to the United Nations-led process. It’s time for the Houthis to also show the international community that they too are serious,” Cohen told the council.

U.N. aid chief Mark Lowcock painted a dire picture of the humanitarian situation in Yemen, appealing for more money for “the world’s largest aid operation” and more access.

Saudi Arabia to meet banks on export-credit finance plans, sources say

DUBAI (Reuters) – Saudi Arabia will soon discuss with international banks its plans to use export-credit agencies in other countries to help it finance infrastructure projects, sources familiar with the matter said.

Saudi Arabia has embarked on an ambitious economic transformation plan involving infrastructure projects worth billions of dollars, in areas ranging from housing to transport.

But it has accumulated almost $60 billion of debt in just over two years, and that has not included financing linked to the infrastructure projects.

In January last year, the country’s debt-management office said it had asked banks to submit proposals for potential financing backed by export-credit agencies (ECAs). Those agencies offer loan guarantees and sometimes financing to encourage trade and lower the costs of international business.

Some Saudi entities have already used such financing. Aramco, the state-owned oil company, last year signed a $2 billion line of credit with UK Export Finance, the British ECA.

But more than a year after requesting proposals, the government has not appointed a financial adviser, the sources said. Nor has it said what specific projects the financing would support.

The debt management office did not respond to a request for comment.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Saudi Arabia has spent billions of dollars on mega-projects over the past decades, but a slump in construction and delays in payments to contractors have stalled existing developments. At the same time, lower oil prices have squeezed the state budget.

Work on King Abdullah Financial District, for example, a $10 billion project in Riyadh, began in 2006. But it has run into construction delays, cost overruns and doubts about an initial economic feasibility study.

The kingdom said last month it planned to start developing the first area of NEOM, a high-tech $500 billion business zone, in the first quarter of 2019.

ECA-backed financing could be useful for similar large projects requiring foreign equipment and contractors, as well as cheap debt financing over long periods, the sources said. But, they added, the government has not started talks yet on ECA-backed financing for NEOM.

The government has taken some steps toward project funding. Last November, the debt management office appointed as a temporary adviser MUFG banker Hirofumi Sakioka, who is the deputy head of ECA Finance EMEA at MUFG Bank.

The sources said his appointment was aimed at coordinating ECA financing requirements from various Saudi ministries.

About two years ago, the government asked ministries to review billions of dollars’ worth of unfinished projects with a view to shelving or restructuring them.

Many of the projects are relics of an era of high oil prices and lavish state spending, which ended when oil prices began to fall in mid-2014, making it increasingly difficult for Riyadh to find the money needed to complete them.

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – The grounding of India’s Jet Airways is turning into a quick windfall and long-term opportunity for international airlines keen to scoop up nearly a million outbound passengers from what was once the nation’s biggest airline.

Jet, which previously had a fleet of around 120 largely Boeing Co planes, was forced to indefinitely halt all flight operations on April 17 after its banks rejected the carrier’s plea for emergency funds.

The carrier’s descent into crisis has benefited international airlines in the form of rising fares and demand, data showed.

Fares from India to cities such as Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Bali in the first quarter of 2019 rose between 4 percent and 32 percent from a year ago, according to Indian travel portal MakeMyTrip Ltd.

In the peak travel months of May and June, fares to London have spiked as much as 36 percent and tickets to San Francisco are up nearly 20 percent from a year ago, according to data from travel portal Yatra.com.

“For the next three months it’s actually bonanza time for international players,” said Ashish Nainan, a research analyst at CARE Ratings. “At least until the middle of June, the fares are not going to come down.”

Due to rising demand, even before Jet’s lessors grounded planes, carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines Ltd and United Airlines saw an up to a 27 percent increase in passenger numbers from India in the last quarter of 2018, data from India’s aviation regulator showed. That is the latest period for which the data is available.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, clocking 15-20 percent domestic growth in recent years. It has long had only two full-service long-haul carriers, state-run Air India and Jet.

Jet is now hoping to be bailed out by a new investor, with final bids due on May 10.

INCREASING CAPACITY

Before its grounding, Jet had the biggest share of India’s outbound international air traffic, carrying 12 percent of the 7.8 million passengers headed overseas in the Oct-Dec quarter, down from 14 percent a year earlier, data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.

For an interactive graphic on Jet’s market share, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2WvDQYi

For an interactive graphic on average daily flights by the airline, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2FeFDel

The total number of passengers traveling overseas with Jet fell 10 percent during the last quarter of 2018 even as the outbound travel market grew about 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines posted a 27 percent increase in passengers from India, Cathay registered 17 percent growth and British Airways saw a 10 percent rise in the same period.

Cathay said the events at Jet combined with increasing demand for travel had led it to deploy larger aircraft with more seats on some Indian routes.

“In the long term we would certainly like to be able to offer more capacity into India, not just on our existing routes but by establishing new services to secondary cities,” Cathay said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines, in an email to Reuters, said the Indian market is “very promising” but declined to give details of airfare levels or demand patterns in the wake of Jet’s exit, citing a quiet period before the release of its annual results.

DOMESTIC GAINS

Jet’s grounding has also had a big impact on the domestic market, with inter-city air fares to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata soaring more than 20 percent in May and June, according to Yatra.com.

The spike in fares is expected to underpin strong earnings for IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd, which are set to report results for the quarter ended March 31 in the coming weeks.

“Domestic Indian carriers are the main benefactors, but I suspect if Jet fails to be revived by May 10 then Vistara and other airlines that ply international routes, particularly the lucrative Gulf market, are the main winners,” said Shukor Yusof, the head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics. Vistara is a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

Inadequate bilateral traffic rights between India and other countries, however, could be an impediment to foreign carriers’ hopes of winning business lost by Jet, some analysts said.

“Even before Jet’s operational shutdown, international capacity was significantly constrained,” said Kapil Kaul, CEO for South Asia of consultancy CAPA. “We have now more serious capacity challenge … this is unlikely to be stabilized in the near term.”

A new national government likely to be in place sometime after elections end in May is expected to address the international capacity constraints, and once bilateral agreements are eased airlines including Emirates, Turkish and Qatar would immediately benefit, said Kaul.

“We would love to add more flights but we are at the limit of the allocation granted to us for traffic rights,” Emirates Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori told reporters in Dubai on Wednesday.

(Reuters) – AstraZeneca Plc beat first-quarter sales and earnings expectations on Friday as the British drugmaker benefited from a push into cancer drugs and emerging markets including China.

Newer treatments such as lung cancer drug Tagrisso, now the company’s top selling medicine, have helped the drugmaker’s return to growth after years of crumbling sales due to patent losses on older drugs.

Sales in China have shown explosive growth, more than doubling since 2012, but AstraZeneca executives on Friday said that may not be sustained.

“The enormous growth you currently see in China, 28 percent, probably is not sustainable, but we feel very bullish that the growth will continue to be at a pace of between 15 percent and 20 percent,” Ruud Dobber, executive vice president, BioPharma, told Reuters.

Shares of the company were down 0.2 percent at 5,878 pence at 1031 GMT.

The turnaround in AstraZeneca’s fortunes has been powered by a push into cancer treatments led by Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, who saw off a 2014 takeover bid from Pfizer in part by promising annual sales of $45 billion by 2023.

In the first quarter, sales from its oncology unit rose 59 percent to $1.89 billion, accounting for 35 percent of total product sales.

The company has moved deeper into cancer therapy market through wide-ranging deals, including those for immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Last month, it agreed a multi-billion dollar oncology deal with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd.

“We’re reaching that point where after years of having to keep faith, we have actually got something tangible to believe in,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett said.

AstraZeneca also backed its annual sales and earnings forecast and said it has extensively prepared for UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union, even in the event of a no-deal exit.

The company has already spent more than 40 million pounds ($52 million) on Brexit preparations, including stockpiling six weeks’ worth of drugs in the UK and four weeks in continental Europe to guard against shortages.

AstraZeneca said product sales rose 14 percent at constant currency to $5.47 billion in the quarter, led by its lung cancer drug Tagrisso and respiratory treatment Pulmicort.

China sales increased by 28 percent to $1.24 billion in the quarter, accounting for nearly a quarter of overall product sales.

Core earnings came in at 89 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts on average were expecting core earnings of 85 cents per share and product sales of $5.29 billion, according to a company provided consensus of 19 analysts.

It’s the type of crime that doesn’t happen every day.

Police in the suburbs of Philadelphia say three suspects broke into a medical facility in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, last Saturday and fled with 18 colonoscopies – devices used for examining the health of patients’ colons.

The devices were reportedly worth a total of about $450,000, authorities said.

But police were perplexed about what the suspects might have planned to do with the instruments.

“This is not something that a typical pawn shop might accept,” Lower Merion Police Detective Sergeant Michael Vice told Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV. “My feeling would be that it was some type of black market sales.”

Such a market apparently does exist, Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath told Philly.com.

“They appeared to know precisely where to go, and they pried the door open,” McGrath said of the suspects, who were captured on surveillance video leaving the facility, carrying bulging backpacks.

Police are hoping the suspects will be caught in the end.
