Spicer: Dems Recognize They Are Playing a Losing Hand on Mueller

Democrats have “dug a hole so deep” with the Mueller probe they don’t know how to get out of it and are doubling down on calls for Attorney General William Barr to release the special counsel’s full report on his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday.

“I think Democrats recognize that they are playing a losing hand,” he said during an appearance on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.”

“So that the only way to do this is to pivot further away from what they originally started at, which was just allowing Mueller to investigate this issue. Once he came up with a conclusion that wasn't what they wanted, they had to pivot to something else.”

Mueller's report, as summarized on March 24 by Barr, "did not find that the Trump campaign or anyone associated with it conspired or coordinated with Russia in its efforts to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election.”

Barr will release a redacted copy of Mueller’s report by mid-April, but Spicer said he “doesn’t have to do it according to law.”

There are “two issues with the current report – one is there’s grand jury testimony and, two, there’s classified information in it that he has to protect by law. … So Attorney General Barr is going above and beyond what he is required to do. And I think Democrats recognize that they are playing a losing hand.”

Jordan demands answers over Democrats’ secret meetings about Trump-focused probes

House Oversight Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan demanded answers from committee Chairman Elijah Cummings Tuesday over the secret meetings he held with other House committee leaders related to their sweeping Trump-focused investigations.

Jordan, R-Ohio, who first raised questions about a secret Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU, between Cummings, D-Md., and House Financial Services Committee Chairwoman Maxine Waters, D-Calif., last week, further pressed the committee’s top Democrat and suggested he violated House rules.

WHITE HOUSE TELLS EX-SECURITY OFFICIAL CARL KLINE TO DEFY HOUSE SUBPOENA

“Your nonpublic MOU with Chairwoman Waters cites no specific authority allowing you to execute an MOU that could affect future investigatory actions you take as chairman on behalf of the Committee,” Jordan wrote Tuesday. “I ask again whether you could explain the authority that allows you to execute an MOU that affects potential Committee action without first obtaining approval of Committee Members.”

Jordan also outlined House rules, which authorize Cummings to “take specific, enumerated actions as chairman with respect to the Committee’s oversight and legislative business—convening hearings, initiating investigations, authorizing and issuing subpoenas, ordering depositions, and appointing task forces.”

Jordan first raised questions about the secret Cummings-Waters meeting last week. The Washington Examiner first reported that Jordan accused Democrats of coordinating in secret related to their investigations into the president while keeping Republicans in the dark. The Examiner also reported that House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., was part of the secret meeting.

DEMS RAMP UP ANTI-TRUMP PROBES POST-MUELLER, DESPITE PLEDGE TO FOCUS ON AGENDA

Last week Jordan demanded answers as to why Cummings held a meeting and did not “conduct with Republican Members of the Committee or allow Members to consider and debate the terms” of the MOU before holding it.

“If you intend to continue to use the Committee's limited resources to attack President Trump for political gain, I hope that you will at least be transparent about your actions,” Jordan wrote. “Your ability to function as a fair and unbiased finder of fact is now at grave risk. The Members of the Committee — and, more importantly, the American citizens we represent —deserve to know exactly how you are leading this Committee.”

A spokesperson for Cummings did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

Jordan’s questions and Cummings’ meetings come amid sweeping Trump-focused investigations throughout the House of Representatives. Cummings’ committee is leading an investigation into the controversial security clearance process for Trump administration officials, and also subpoenaing materials related to the president’s personal finances. Last week, Cummings vowed to subpoena Trump’s accountant.

Meanwhile, Schiff’s committee is investigating the president’s foreign business dealings and Russian election meddling, maintaining that despite the results of Mueller’s probe, there is evidence of collusion.

Schiff’s panel has also weighed subpoenaing the interpreter who was present for meetings between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, to obtain notes from the summits.

Waters’ committee is also probing the president, coordinating with Schiff’s committee on money-laundering inquiries. The House Foreign Affairs Committee, chaired by Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., is also involved.

Schiff and Waters have together said they would run a joint investigation into Deutsche Bank—which has done extensive business dealings with the president. Last year, Schiff charged that Trump’s financial records with Deutsche Bank and Russia may reveal a “form of compromise” that “needs to be exposed.” Schiff has long maintained that there had to be some reason that the German banking giant, which he said has a “history of laundering Russian money,” was willing to work with the Trump Organization.

Sen. Rick Scott: Fix Healthcare Price Problems ‘Piece by Piece’

The problem with healthcare in America isn’t access — it’s the too-high price tag, Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said Sunday.

In an interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Scott said he prefers to fix the problem “piece by piece.”

“I know in the end the White House is going to have their plan,” he predicted, but added: “I’m going to focus on how you drive down cost… Democrats constantly focus on access. The problem is the cost of healthcare is too high in this country.

Scott said Democrats only worsen the rising cost issue.

“The problem that Democrats have is everything they keep doing is raising the cost of healthcare,” he said. “Let's look at Obamacare. Premiums went up, copayments went up.”

He said he wants to focus “first on prescription drug prices. “

“They're way too high,” he said “We shouldn't be paying more than what they pay in Europe. It's unfair to Americans. And let's go piece by piece to try to fix it. ….I know a lot of people like the grand bargains. I don't believe in grand bargains. I believe in piece by piece fixing things.”

The Latest: 115 reported dead after attack on Malian village

The Latest on the Mali village attack (all times local):

5:35 p.m.

A group representing ethnic Peulhs in central Mali says the provisional death toll from a morning militia attack has risen to 115.

Abdoul Aziz Diallo, president of Tabital Pulaaku, gave the figure Saturday after receiving detailed information from authorities at the scene. Initially, witnesses said at least 40 had been slain.

Diallo said the victims included pregnant women and small children. Another leader of a local Peulh militia said the village chief of Egossagou had also been killed along with some of his grandchildren.

It was not immediately possible to independently corroborate the death toll.

Members of the Dogon group accuse the Peulhs of supporting these jihadists linked to terror groups in the country's north and beyond. Peulhs have in turn accused the Dogon of supporting the Malian army in its effort to stamp out extremism.

5:05 p.m.

Witnesses in a central Malian village say at least 40 people have been slain and dozens wounded after an attack blamed on an ethnic militia.

Sekou Allaye Bolly told The Associated Press that the Dogon fighters had descended upon the Peulh village of Egossogou just after 5 a.m. Saturday.

The dead included the village chief and his grandchildren.

The Dogon and Peulh communities have long co-existed in central Mali though the emergence of jihadists from other parts of the country has unraveled the peace between them.

Rush Limbaugh: Leading Dem Biden Can’t Beat Trump

Radio host Rush Limbaugh thinks former Vice President Joe Biden is the Democrats' best hope for winning the 2020 election — but he said Biden has no chance of defeating President Donald Trump.

Limbaugh was on Fox News' "The Story" and gave host Martha MacCallum his early thoughts on 2020.

"I remain stunned and amazed that the Democrat Party and the media still do not understand who Donald Trump is," Limbaugh said. "They don't understand how he won, they don't understand how he is going to win again in 2020. They don't understand the people who voted for him or why. They hold all of that in contempt.

"Here's the thing: Joe Biden is probably the best chance they've got, and he doesn't have a chance. Joe Biden? And crazy Bernie [Sanders]? And Mayor Pete [Buttigieg]? Three white guys, two of them are brontosauruses from Jurassic Park, and that isn't going to sit well with the rest of this party, which has gone so far left."

Limbaugh then wondered aloud how much Biden really wants to be president. The 76-year-old worked in Washington for more than 40 years as a senator and the vice president and has already run for president twice.

Biden is expected to announce his candidacy for president this week.

"I don't know how badly he really wants this," Limbaugh said. "And you have to really want this if you are going to have any chance of winning it."

Kellyanne Conway, after Mueller report’s release, says press apologies are in order

Kellyanne Conway, close adviser to President Trump, had some words for reporters after the Justice Department released Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report and discounted the possibility that the president had colluded with Russia.

"We’re accepting apologies today, too, for anybody who feels the grace in offering them," she said before criticizing the way the press handled the issue.

On Twitter, Conway singled out The New York Times, which she said should print a "16-page apology."

Conway, who served as Trump's 2016 campaign manager, said the report dispelled concerns that the president unfairly beat former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in the last presidential election.

"It should make [people] feel really great that a campaign that I managed to its successful end did not collude with any Russians," she said. During an interview with Fox News, Conway said the report showed "we didn't need WikiLeaks or anything beyond Hillary Clinton herself to get negative information."

"You know how what I did as campaign manager to get negative information on Hillary Clinton? I got it from Hillary Clinton. She was an awful candidate," she told Fox News host Harris Faulkner.

KELLYANNE CONWAY REITERATES CALL FOR ADAM SCHIFF'S RESIGNATION AFTER MUELLER REPORT'S RELEASE

Though Mueller's report didn't "exonerate" Trump, it also didn't conclude that the president's campaign had colluded with Russia. Democrats have seized on Mueller's other findings, however, saying the report points to other potential instances of obstruction.

Like others, Conway argued that Trump was innocent of obstruction because his intent was not to violate the law. "Intent has never mattered to any of you, respectfully, throughout this whole thing," she told reporters.

"Was there intent to collude? Was there an intent to commit a crime? Was there an intent to conspire with Russians? Was there intent to steal the election from poor old Hillary Clinton, I'm sure for whom most of you voted?"

She also accused the press of helping to spread a lie over the past two years. "And so intent matters and I know you want to cherry-pick one line here or one line there because the big lie that you’ve let fly for two years, it’s over, folks," she said.

MEDIA OUTLETS PAN AG BARR BEFORE RELEASE OF REDACTED MUELLER REPORT

Conway took a jab at congressional Democrats who spent much of their time focusing on the Russia issue. Holding up a blank sheet of paper, Conway said, "this is the success of the Democrats in the first 100 days in Congress."

During her interview with Faulkner, Conway also said Democrats "got nothin'" going into the 2020 presidential election.

For their part, the Dems have demanded an unredacted version of the Mueller report and indicated they would pursue Mueller's concerns about potential obstruction of justice.

MONTREAL/OTTAWA (Reuters) – Rising waters are leading to further evacuations in central Canada, with the mayor of the country’s capital Ottawa declaring a state of emergency, and Quebec authorities warning that a hydroelectric dam was at risk of breaking.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson declared a state of emergency for the city in response to rising water levels along the Ottawa River and weather forecasts that called for significant rainfall on Friday.

In a statement on Twitter, Watson asked for help from the Canadian province of Ontario and the country’s military.

He warned that “flood levels are currently forecasted to exceed the levels that caused significant damage to numerous properties in the city of Ottawa in 2017.”

Spring flooding has killed one person and forced more than 900 people from their homes in Canada’s Quebec province as of Thursday at 1 p.m., according to a government website.

Quebec’s Public Security Ministry warned on Thursday that the hydroelectric dam at Bell Falls on the Rouge River in the western part of the province was at risk of failure because of rising water levels.

Quebec’s provincial police said 250 people were protectively being removed from their homes as of late afternoon in case the dam breaks.

LONDON (Reuters) – With Sainsbury’s dream of creating Britain’s biggest supermarket group in tatters, its chastened CEO Mike Coupe needs to reassure investors he has the plan to arrest a sales decline when he presents annual results next week.

Britain’s competition regulator blocked Sainsbury’s 7.3 billion pound ($9.4 billion) takeover of Walmart’s Asda on Thursday, saying the deal would increase prices. Sainsbury’s shares fell 5 percent and are down 22 percent over the last three months.

For Sainsbury’s fourth quarter to March 9 analysts are on average forecasting a 1.6 percent fall in like-for-like sales, which would follow 1.1 percent decline over the Christmas period.

Monthly industry data from researcher Kantar has also shown Sainsbury’s as the weakest performer of the big four grocers this year and this month it lost its status as Britain’s No. 2 supermarket group by market share to Asda.

While Sainsbury’s has struggled, market leader Tesco has gained momentum, this month reporting a 34 percent jump in full year profit.

Prohibition of the deal was a major blow to Coupe, its architect and Sainsbury’s boss since 2014.

Martin Scicluna became Sainsbury’s chairman last month and when bedded-in may decide that if the group needs a major shake-up it is best carried out by a new leader.

Much will depend on the attitude of 22 percent shareholder the Qatar Investment Authority, which has so far declined to comment, as well as Coupe’s own appetite to continue after 15 years at the group.

THE RIGHT STRATEGY?

Coupe said on Thursday he was confident Sainsbury’s was pursuing the right strategy.

That was a clear indication that Wednesday’s results statement will not include radical changes to the group’s plans, such as a big margin reset — sacrificing profit to drive sales.

However, sources connected to Sainsbury’s said Coupe would likely acknowledge that more needs to be done on prices, so the supermarket business can better compete with its big four rivals – Tesco, Asda and No. 4 Morrisons – as well as German-owned discounters Aldi and Lidl.

Coupe’s strategy is based on differentiating Sainsbury’s food offer, growing its general merchandise, clothing business and bank, while investing in convenience and online channels.

Some analysts believe major change is needed.

HSBC analyst David McCarthy reckons Sainsbury’s needs a margin reset, should allocate more space for core lines and needs to drive better store standards. He said Sainsbury’s might consider closing down space in some of its larger stores and reducing its non-food offer.

For the full 2018-19 year analysts are on average forecasting a pretax profit of 626 million pounds, up from 589 million pounds in 2017-18 – a second straight year of profit growth. A full year dividend of 10.5 pence per share is forecast versus 10.2 pence last time.

Bank and lawyer fees related to the proposed combination with Asda were 17 million pounds in the first half and have reportedly jumped to around 50 million pounds.

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada posted a budget surplus in the first 11 months of the 2018/19 fiscal year compared to a deficit the year earlier as revenues increased mostly on higher tax incomes, the finance department said on Friday.

The surplus for April-February was C$3.1 billion, compared to a deficit of C$6 billion in the same 2017/18 period. Revenues climbed by 8.5 percent, mainly due to higher tax receipts, while program expenses rose by 4.8 percent.

The surplus for February was C$4.3 billion compared with C$2.8 billion in February 2018. Revenues jumped by 12.2 percent while program expenses posted a more modest 6.9 percent gain.

Last month, the Liberals unveiled their new budget, projecting a C$14.9 billion deficit in 2018/19, with the deficit rising to C$19.8 billion in fiscal 2019/20.

President Trump said Friday he would beat Joe Biden “easily” in the 2020 presidential election, suggesting the former vice president could not have enough “energy” to hold the post—taking an apparent swipe at his age.

The president, departing the White House, was asked about Biden’s entrance into the Democratic primary field. Biden announced his presidential bid early Thursday morning, marking his third attempt at the White House.

JOE BIDEN OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES 2020 PRESIDENTIAL BID

“I think we’d beat him easily,” Trump told reporters Friday.

Trump, 72, said he feels “young” and is ready for 2020, and another term for his administration.

“I feel like a young man. I am a young, vibrant man,” Trump said. “I look at Joe, I don’t know about him.”

The president’s comments seemingly were a shot at the age of Biden, who is 76.

BIDEN ENTERS WHITE HOUSE RACE WITHOUT OBAMA’S ENDORSEMENT

“I would never say anyone’s too old,” Trump said. “I know they’re all making me look very young both in terms of age and in terms of energy.”

Biden became the 20th candidate to join the crowded Democratic primary field Thursday. But Biden is not the oldest in the pack. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is 77 and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., is 69.

Should Trump be re-elected, he would be 74 on Jan. 20, 2021—Inauguration Day. Should the presidency go to one of the elder Democrats in the field—Biden would be 78; Sanders would be 79; and Warren would be 71.

Meanwhile, in a wide-ranging interview on “Hannity” Thursday night, Trump dismissed Biden’s candidacy, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe,” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Trump also said that while the former vice president has name recognition, he won’t “be able to do the job.”
