Kaepernick's Lawyer Predicts NFL Return

Kaepernick's Lawyer Predicts NFL Return

Now that Colin Kaepernick has settled his collusion grievances with the NFL, the next step is getting him back in the league, his lawyer said Saturday night.

Attorney Mark Geragos told CNN that Kaepernick "absolutely wants to play" and made a pretty bold prediction about when that might happen.

"I think you're going to see ... within the next two weeks that somebody is going to step up and do the right thing, and you want me to predict who?" Geragos asked, per ESPN. "Besides the Panthers, it would not surprise me if Bob Kraft makes a move."

Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, is among the founders of an organization launched last month to seek criminal justice reform.

The settlement of the grievance filed by Kaepernick and Eric Reid was announced in a joint statement released by their attorneys and the league on Friday.

"For the past several months, counsel for Mr. Kaepernick and Mr. Reid have engaged in an ongoing dialog with representatives of the NFL," the statement reads. "As a result of those discussions, the parties have decided to resolve the pending grievances. The resolution of this matter is subject to a confidentiality agreement so there will be no further comment by any party."

According to Yahoo Sports, the final hearing in the players' joint collusion case against the NFL was scheduled for later this month. Yahoo added that sources previously said Kaepernick would only withdraw his grievance for a lucrative settlement.

The NFL Players Association released a statement supporting the resolution.

"Today, we were informed by the NFL of the settlement of the Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid collusion cases," the statement reads. "We are not privy to the details of the settlement, but support the decision by the players and their counsel. We continuously supported Colin and Eric from the start of their protests, participated with their lawyers throughout their legal proceedings and were prepared to participate in the upcoming trial in pursuit of both truth and justice for what we believe the NFL and its clubs did to them.

"We are glad that Eric has earned a job and a new contract, and we continue to hope that Colin gets his opportunity as well."

Kaepernick filed his grievance in October 2017, alleging collusion by NFL owners to keep him out of the league, as he remained unsigned as a free agent through the fall after opting out of a contract with the San Francisco 49ers that spring. A number of owners, executives, coaches and other figures have been deposed as part of the grievance, and a motion by the NFL to have the grievance dismissed was denied in August.

Reid, who was the first player to join Kaepernick in 2016 with the 49ers by kneeling during the national anthem in protest, filed his own collusion case against the NFL in May 2018. It appears the two grievances were combined into a joint case, but it's unclear when that occurred.

Reid became a free agent in March 2018 and remained unsigned until mid-September, when the Carolina Panthers brought him in after an injury to safety Da'Norris Searcy. With his one-year deal expiring after the season, Reid signed a three-year extension for a reported $22 million with Carolina last week.

The 31-year-old Kaepernick remains unsigned, having not played a game since the 2016 regular-season finale. He led the 49ers to a Super Bowl XLVII appearance after the 2012 season.

Mixed martial arts-Bellator set to go toe-to-toe with UFC in Europe

By Philip O’Connor

DUBLIN (Reuters) – A new TV deal in Britain and a focus on the European market from American mixed martial arts promotion Bellator will open more opportunities for fighters outside of the dominance of the UFC, Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh has told Reuters.

The Irish MMA pioneer says that Saturday’s event in his hometown of Dublin, which will be broadcast on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland, will mark the start of a new era in the sport.

“Saturday night is a changing point for what it is to be an MMA fighter in Ireland and the UK. Until now if you’re a pro on the local scene, you’re fighting for a couple of hundred euros.

“Now with Bellator and the Sky Sports deal, there’s opportunities for guys to make a living, and not just the top guys,” explained Kavanagh, who shepherded former two-weight champion McGregor and many others to success in the UFC.

Aspiring pro fighters like McGregor who trained at Kavanagh’s Straight Blast Gym previously aimed to get to the UFC. But Kavanagh says that Bellator’s rise has opened up more opportunities, and that the vast majority of his current fighters have signed deals with them.

“The UFC is going to do what the UFC is going to do, think they are more invested in the American and maybe the Chinese market now as of late, and Bellator are more in the European market,” he said.

“My relationship is very strong with Bellator and I’m committed to helping them corner the European market.”

Fighters and officials spoke to the media on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s Bellator 216 card at Dublin’s O2 Arena where brash 22-year-old James Gallagher, thought of as the heir to McGregor, tops the bill in a bantamweight bout against Steven Graham.

Asked what made him choose Bellator over the UFC or another rival promotion, Gallagher laughs.

“A load of money! I’ve always wanted to display my skills on the biggest stage, and the offer they made me changed my life. It enables me to train day in, day out. I’ve got no worries, only to show up, train and win,” the submission specialist from Strabane in Northern Ireland told Reuters.

European fighters trying to make their mark in the sport often struggle to make ends meet financially, and former amateur world champion Leah McCourt says Bellator’s investment and the Sky TV deal will make it easier for them.

“It’s life-changing for all of us, to be able to make a living rather than being in debt after every fight and paying our expenses,” she said.

“I think we work harder than any athletes in the world to be able to step in that cage and fight, so it’s so exciting to have such a massive audience now.”

STRUGGLE TO COMPETE

Started in California in 2008, Bellator has previously struggled to compete on an equal footing with the UFC, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2018 and boasts big names like McGregor, Jon Jones and the retired Ronda Rousey.

The UFC introduced the concept of staging fights with very limited rules in an octagonal cage back in 1993 and generates much of its revenue from pay-per-view events staged mostly in the U.S.

It was sold in 2017 for around four billion dollars to Talent agency WME-IMG and no other promotion has ever really threatened its dominance.

More recently, Bellator has tried to take them on by signing popular ex-UFC fighters and staging high-profile fights of their own. But the sudden pivot to Europe and the announcement of deals in Britain with Sky Sports and Channel 5 is a huge boost to the promotion’s credibility and visibility.

“We are coming here and it’s not just a toe in the water – it’s coming in fully-fledged with a really big proposal, to come into Europe and put on some really big shows, showcase the talent and give them a roadmap to fighting all over the world,” David Green, Bellator’s Head of Europe, told Reuters.

Though the TV deal with Sky Sports is only for one year initially, Green says that the promotion is taking a long-term view.

“We don’t need a quick win. We’re trying to build this in the right way, building public awareness, brand awareness, the size of the gates… certainly, there is an opportunity to be the biggest in Europe, without a doubt.”

Can they be the biggest in the world?

“Well, you know, you’ve got to aim high,” Green said with a wry smile.

Tennis: ITF’s new pathway to help dreamers reach the top

LONDON (Reuters) – Armed with his talent and a racket bag full of hope, Frenchman Evan Furness is one of the dreamers hoping to climb from tennis’s lowest rungs up onto the biggest stages of all.

The trouble is the vast majority of the thousands of players who venture, like 20-year-old Furness, into the jungle of world tennis find the path leads not to fame and fortune, but to a dead end and debt.

Far from emulating the likes of Roger Federer or Serena Williams, most never even reach the lucrative ATP or WTA Tours, and hundreds never earn a bean for all their hard graft.

In 2017, there were 14,000 so-called tennis professionals, but fewer than 600 broke even before coaching costs.

While the likes of Novak Djokovic and Serena earn fortunes from the sport and even men’s 100th-ranked Vasek Pospisil has banked $5.2 million in a decade on Tour, around 80 percent of professionals quit having earned next to nothing.

In truth, for the majority, a career as a tennis pro has been more fantasy than reality.

Which is why the International Tennis Federation (ITF) has acted on its three-year Player Pathway review, a comprehensive study into the professional game published in 2017, and why players like Furness now see light at the end of the tunnel.

The new ITF World Tennis Tour, a transition circuit of 1,600 junior and entry-level tournaments, began in January to provide a streamlined progression between the junior and senior game, enabling more professional players to make a living.

Prize money pools of $15,000 and $25,000 will be available for entry-level men’s and women’s events while, crucially, “reserved places” will be available in higher level tournaments.

Jackie Nesbitt, Executive Director of the ITF Pro Circuits, said the initial indications were positive.

“As a sport it was clear we needed to do much better for the players,” she told Reuters by telephone. “The new structure has a clear aim and that is to support the best young male and female players and to deliver them to the ATP and WTA Tours.

“It’s about fast-tracking on merit, allowing the best players in the entry-level tournaments to move up through the professional pathway quicker and at less cost to themselves.”

The new system features an ITF World Tour ranking list which will run separately from the ATP and WTA rankings, both of which will be trimmed back to 750 players.

Top-100 ranked juniors will be eligible for reserved places in $15k tournaments, while Level 2 $25k draws will also have places for players doing well at a lower level.

Four reserved places will be available for ITF-ranked players in ATP Challenger, one level below the full ATP Tour.

Frenchman Furness took advantage of a reserved spot to win a $25k event in Hong Kong and then won another title in Switzerland – proof, Nesbitt said, that the system worked.

“We are really encouraged,” Nesbitt said. “It shows they are competing at the right level and are competitive at that level.”

While reducing the quantity of players might seem counter-intuitive, ITF president David Haggerty said offering better rewards will help “retain the best talent”.

But how many players will make money?

“Too many people were competing for the prize money available,” Nesbitt said. “We want to see a significant uplift (in players making money). It will be one of our key performance indicators that tell us how successful these reforms have been.”

With minimal rewards, the lowest rungs of professional tennis have been vulnerable to potential match-fixing.

Of the 264 match alerts flagged up to the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU) by the betting industry in 2018, 163 were in entry-level men’s events compared with five on the ATP Tour.

Nesbitt believes offering a clearer path to the higher echelons of the game can help fight corruption.

“Better-targeted prize money will help more players earn a living from the game,” she said. “We are creating a good environment for juniors to learn their trade, be educated in integrity and doping matters, and they know they will be rewarded for doing well in the juniors.”

Jerry Nadler Demands Barr Give Congress Unredacted Mueller Report

The Democratic chairman of the House Judiciary Committee is reiterating his demand that Attorney General William Barr provide Congress with the complete, unredacted report submitted by special counsel Robert Mueller on Russian election interference rather than a copy scrubbed of grand jury testimony and classified information.

A short time after Barr announced he would provide Congress a redacted copy of Mueller's report by the middle of April, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., pushed back hard.

"As I informed the attorney general earlier this week, Congress requires the full and complete Mueller report, without redactions, as well as access to the underlying evidence, by April 2. That deadline still stands," Nadler said in a statement.

"As I also informed him, rather than expend valuable time and resources trying to keep certain portions of this report from Congress, he should work with us to request a court order to release any and all grand jury information to the House Judiciary Committee — as has occurred in every similar investigation in the past."

Nadler claimed "ample precedent" exists for the DOJ to provide unredacted documents that have been requested by committees on Capitol Hill.

Nadler and other Democrats are particularly interested in why Mueller was unable to definitively say whether or not President Donald Trump obstructed justice. Trump and his campaign were cleared of conspiring with the Russians to win the 2016 election, but his critics are still demanding to see Mueller's entire report.

Report: Rove Joins 5G Battle That’s Dividing Trump Advisers

Veteran GOP strategist Karl Rove is contacting lawmakers' offices on Capitol Hill to warn against bipartisan efforts to ban government control of super-fast 5G wireless technology — a fight that has split President Donald Trump's advisers, Politico reported.

The outreach has included staffers in the office of Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, one of several lawmakers sponsoring the legislation, Politico reported.

Rove has also been at meetings with House and Senate Armed Services committee offices organized by a lobbyist for Rivada Networks, which wants the government to manage the sharing of 5G airwaves with wireless providers, company spokesperson Brian Carney said Thursday. Carney told Politico that Rove is not a lobbyist for the company.

Rivada, which is backed by tech investor and Trump ally Peter Thiel, would have the administration take wireless spectrum from the Defense Department and use a third-party operator — ideally Rivada — to make those airwaves available to providers who need it on a rolling wholesale basis, much like in the electricity market, Politico reported.

Rove has been helping Rivada cultivate a network of advocates to push its 5G concept — pitting them against the telecom industry and many Trump administration officials and lawmakers who believe private companies like AT&T and Verizon should manage the buildout of 5G and Rivada's plan smacks of "nationalization," Politico reported.

The fight comes as the United States races China and other countries to be first to deploy 5G wireless networks.

(Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures were flat on Friday, as investors paused ahead of GDP data, which is expected to show the world’s largest economy maintained a moderate pace of growth in the first quarter.

Gross domestic product probably increased at a 2% annualized rate in the quarter as a burst in exports, strong inventory stockpiling and government investment in public construction projects offset a slowdown in consumer and business spending, according to a Reuters survey of economists.

The Commerce Department report will be published at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The GDP data comes as investors look for fresh catalysts to push the markets higher. The S&P 500 index is about 0.5% below its record high hit in late September, after surging nearly 17% this year.

First-quarter earnings have been largely upbeat, with nearly 78% of the 178 companies that have reported so far surpassing earnings estimates, according to Refinitiv data.

Wall Street now expects S&P 500 earnings to be in line with the year-ago quarter, a sharp improvement from the 2.3% fall expected at the start of April.

Amazon.com Inc rose 0.9% in premarket trading after the e-commerce giant reported quarterly profit that doubled and beat estimates on soaring demand for its cloud and ad services.

Ford Motor Co shares surged 8.5% after the automaker posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings largely due to strong pickup truck sales in its core U.S. market.

Mattel Inc jumped 8% after the toymaker beat analysts’ estimates for quarterly revenue, as a more diverse range of Barbie dolls powered sales in the United States.

At 6:52 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 35 points, or 0.13%. S&P 500 e-minis were down 1.5 points, or 0.05% and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 10.75 points, or 0.14%.

Among decliners, Intel Corp slumped 7.7% after it cut its full-year revenue forecast and missed quarterly sales estimate for its key data center business.

Rival Advanced Micro Devices declined 0.8%.

Oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp are expected to report results later in the day.

WARSAW (Reuters) – Germany could owe Poland more than $850 billion in reparations for damages it incurred during World War Two and the brutal Nazi occupation, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Germany, one of Poland’s biggest trade partners and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO, says all financial claims linked to World War Two have been settled.

The right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) has revived calls for compensation since it took power in 2015 and has made the promotion of Poland’s wartime victimhood a central plank of its appeal to nationalism.

PiS has yet to make an official demand for reparations but its combative stance towards Germany has strained relations.

“Poland lost not only millions of its citizens but it was also destroyed in an unusually brutal way,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who heads the Polish parliamentary committee on reparations, told Reuters in an interview.

“Many (victims) are still alive and feel deeply wronged.”

His comments come a month before European Parliament elections in which populist and nationalist parties are expected to do well. Poland will also hold national elections later this year, with PiS still well ahead of its rivals in opinion polls.

EU LARGESSE

Mularczyk said the reparations figure could amount to more than 10 times the estimated 100 billion euros ($111 billion) that Poland has received so far in European Union funds since it joined the bloc in 2004.

Germany is the biggest net donor to the EU budget and some Germans regard its contributions as generous compensation to recipient countries like Poland which suffered under Nazi rule.

In 1953 Poland’s then-communist rulers relinquished all claims to war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to free East Germany, also a Soviet satellite, from any liabilities. PiS says that agreement is invalid because Poland was unable to negotiate fair compensation.

Mularczyk said his committee hoped to complete its report on the reparations issue by Sept. 1, the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s invasion.

Accusing Berlin of playing “diplomatic games” over the issue, he said: “The matter is being swept under the rug (by Germany) … until it’ll be wiped from the memory, from people’s awareness.”

His comments come after the Greek parliament voted this month to seek billions of euros in German reparations for the Nazi occupation of their country.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States did not pay any money to North Korea as it sought the release of comatose American student Otto Warmbier.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump had approved payment of a $2 million bill from North Korea to cover its care of the college student, who died shortly after he was returned to the United States after 17 months in a North Korean prison.

Al-Qaida in Yemen is vowing to avenge beheadings carried out by Saudi Arabia this week — an indication that some of the 37 Saudis executed on terrorism-related charges were members of the Sunni militant group.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, as the branch is called, posted a statement on militant-linked websites on Friday, accusing the kingdom of offering the blood of the “noble children of the nation just to appease America.”

The statement says al-Qaida will “never forget about their blood and we will avenge them.”

U.S. ally Saudi Arabia on Tuesday executed 37 suspects convicted on terrorism-related charges. Most were believed to be Shiites but at least one was believed to be a Sunni militant.

His body was pinned to a pole in public as a warning to others.

For two friends with checkered pasts it was the luck of a lifetime: a 4 million-pound ($5.2 million) lottery win.

But Mark Goodram and Jon-Ross Watson may see their celebrations cut short.

The Sun newspaper reports that Britain’s National Lottery is withholding the payout as it investigates whether the men, who have a string of criminal convictions, used illicit means to buy the winning ticket.

The Sun said neither man has a bank account, leading lottery organizers to investigate how they obtained the bank-issued debit card that paid for the 10 pound ($13) scratch card.

Camelot, which runs the lottery, said Friday it couldn’t confirm details of the story because of winner-anonymity rules. The firm said it holds a “thorough investigation” if there is any doubt about a claim.
