NEW YORK (Reuters) – The European Central Bank is committed to keeping monetary policy loose until inflation returns to its target, ECB policymaker Francois Villeroy de Galhau said on Monday.

Villeroy, who is also governor of the Bank of France, said that euro zone inflation was expected to ease over the course of this year before it begins to gradually recover.

“We are clearly determined to maintain an ample degree of monetary accommodation for as long as necessary to reach our target of inflation below but close to 2 percent,” Villeroy told a conference sponsored by the Paris Europlace New York.

The Eurostat European statistics agency estimated euro zone inflation eased in March to 1.4%, while core inflation, which excludes volatile items like energy, slipped to 0.8%.

Pete Buttigieg’s Fake Feud With Mike Pence

Tucker Carlson said Democrats use victimhood status and oppression to seem relatable to voters in the monologue of his Wednesday FOX News program.

TUCKER CARLSON, FOX NEWS: Imagine being a Democratic presidential candidate right now. It’s pretty hard to stand out. There seem to be dozens of them, possibly as many as a thousand. It’s a big group but they don’t disagree on much. They’re not allowed to. Like all fundamentalist religious sects, the Democratic Party won’t tolerate dissent. Everyone believes the same things. The Amish have more intellectual diversity. As a Democratic, the only way to the nomination is by winning gold in the victimhood olympics. You’re got to convince voters that you’ve suffered more than anyone else in the field. That’s not always easy. Cory Booker, for example, grew up in an all-white neighborhood, the son of two IBM executives. He went to Stanford, Oxford, and then Yale Law School. Yet with a straight face Booker will tell you all about his triumph over racism. Kirsten Gillibrand came from privilege, and went to Dartmouth College. She was literally given a US Senate seat. She doesn’t mention any of that now. She talks about the sexism and harassment she supposedly faced. You see the point. In 2019, whining is power. Pete Buttigieg understands this. Buttigieg may be the least oppressed of all. Both his parents were college professors. He went to Harvard, and then to Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. After that, Buttigieg spent three years at McKinsey. That’s where ruling class drones are taught the finer points of sucking up to corporate America. He got an “A” in that class.

Our system has been very good to Pete Buttigieg. If he’s a “victim,” who isn’t? The term has no meaning. So how does Buttigieg win his party’s victimhood olympics? Simple: with the Mike Pence story. Pence was the governor of Indiana when Buttigieg became mayor of South Bend. As Buttigieg has suggested recently, this set the two on a collision course. Buttigieg is gay. Pence is a traditional Christian. Meaning he pines for the social structure of 12th century, and above all passionately hates gay people. How much does he hate them? Watch this explosive exchange from 2015, where Pence was asked directly about Buttigieg. You can see the rage in his eyes, the venom that flecks his lips. He looks dangerous. Brace yourself for this:

I hold Mayor Buttigieg in the highest personal regard. We have a great working relationship. I see him as a dedicated public servant, and a patriot.

See that? Could you feel the hate? “Highest personal regard.” In other words, “away from me, sinner! You are filthy and disgusting.” “Great working relationship,” says Pence. Sure. Among evangelicals, that’s code for, “Once I establish my theocracy, I will throw you in my dungeon and let you rot for eternity.” “Dedicated public servant. Patriot.” Oh please. Pence might as well have spit in Buttigieg’s face and called him a reprobate. It’s the same thing: gay bashing.

Buttigieg responded to attacks like these as you’d expect. He gave Governor Pence an “I Love South Bend” shirt and joined him on a fitness walk. Buttigieg wrote about it on Facebook at the time if you want to read the unnerving details. To this day, he seems traumatized by the experience. Buttigieg recently told a crown in Austin to not, quote, “judge my state by our former governor.” He accused Pence of “social extremism” and dubbed him a “cheerleader of the porn star presidency.” On CNN, he suggested that even god disapproves of Mike Pence:

My marriage to Chasten has made me a better man and yes Mr. VP it has moved me closer to God.

And that’s the thing I wish the Mike Pences of the world would understand that if you have a problem with who I am your problem is not with me. Your quarrel sir is with my creator.

You can imagine how Pence responded to this. When you call out a man as hateful as Mike Pence, you’re likely to get a hate tsunami in return. And that’s exactly what Pence delivered. Watch:

I've known Mayor Pete for many years. We've worked very closely together when I was governor and I considered him a friend and he knows I don't have a problem with him.

Oh, these Evangelicals. When will they start loving their enemies? Pete Buttigieg, by contrast, is an Episcopalian. He expresses his Christian faith by defending late term abortion and relentlessly attacking people who’ve been kind to him. It’s more effective than talking about the city he leads. In 2015, South Bend had a higher murder almost the same as Chicago’s. Aggravated assaults more than tripled since Buttigieg became mayor. Rapes have nearly doubled. Buttigieg doesn’t want to talk about any of that. He wants to talk about the real victim here: himself.

Italian government defuses row over rail link, halts tenders

March 9, 2019

MILAN (Reuters) – Italy’s prime minister halted on Saturday the launch of tenders for a high-speed rail link to France, defusing a dispute within the ruling coalition over the project that had threatened to bring down the government.

The multibillion-euro TAV project (Treno Alta Velocita) is backed by Matteo Salvini’s League party but strongly opposed by its coalition partner, 5-Star Movement, which argues that Italy’s share of the funding would be better spent upgrading existing roads and bridges.

Tensions between the two sides had escalated ahead of a Monday deadline for the company overseeing the project, TELT, to launch tenders to carry out works on it.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said in a post on Facebook he had asked TELT to halt the tenders because his government had committed to “totally re-discussing” the project.

Conte published a response from TELT, which said it would only launch the tenders for the French portion of the rail link on Monday in order to avoid losing European Union funding.

Conte said that Italy would hold discussions with France and the EU in light of a recent cost-benefit analysis commissioned by the Italian government, which found the TAV was a waste of public money.

Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio, who is leader of the 5-Star Movement, said earlier in a Facebook post that the dispute was “being resolved positively.”

“Let’s talk about something else and carry on,” he wrote.

The TAV is a joint venture between the Italian and French states to link the cities of Turin and Lyon with a 58-km (36-mile) tunnel through the Alps on which work has already begun.

The EU has pledged to fund up to 40 percent of the costs of the TAV, Italy up to 35 percent and France up to 25 percent.

Italy’s transport minister, a 5-Star official, puts the total price tag at more than 20 billion euros ($22.6 billion).

His French counterpart, Elisabeth Borne, said on Friday the European Commission had let it be known it was willing to increase its share to 50 percent, leaving France and Italy to finance 25 percent each.

A European Union official had told Reuters the project could lose up to 300 million euros of EU funds if the tenders were not launched by the end of March.

The long-running dispute suddenly escalated late on Thursday and raised the risk of a government collapse, with Di Maio accusing Salvini of acting irresponsibly by insisting the train link should go ahead.

Salvini reiterated on Friday that the League would “never” vote in parliament to block the project, as 5-Star wants.

But on Saturday he sought to quell fears that the government could fall over the rail link.

“Italy needs a government … There won’t be a crisis,” he said in an interview with news channel Sky TG24.

Wolf-Dog Hybrid Gains National Attention

A wolf-dog hybrid housed in a Florida sanctuary has gained quite the following, reports The Miami Herald.

“Yuki The Giant Wolfdog” was rescued by Shy Wolf Sanctuary in Naples in 2008 after his owner couldn’t care for him anymore due to health issues.

He’s 87.5 percent gray wolf, 8.6 percent Siberian Husky and 3.9 percent German Shephard, according to the sanctuary.

The International Wolf Center says its "rare" that hybrids can come about naturally, as "the territorial nature of wolves leads them to protect their home ranges from intruding canines such as dogs, coyotes and other wolves.”

Yuki gained attention recently after a sanctuary volunteer posted photos of him to her Instagram account. Many people have reached out to the sanctuary about adopting Yuki, but he has blood cancer and is not available for adoption. Instead, they ask for donations to help with vet bills.

Yuki, 12, weighs about 120 pounds.

Dem leaders defend House campaign arm after attacks from Ocasio-Cortez and allies

House Democratic leaders on Tuesday defended their campaign arm in the face of complaints from freshmen like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, maintaining that the group's big-picture goal is to “protect and preserve” the party's majority in the House.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., the House Democratic Caucus Chair, was responding to criticism of a move by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to blacklist political firms that work with primary challengers to sitting members of Congress. Reps. Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, both of whom scored primary upsets last year, blasted the decision.

HOUSE DEMOCRATS' CAMPAIGN ARM WARNS CONSULTANTS AGAINST HELPING PRIMARY CHALLENGERS

Jeffries downplayed the rift during a press conference Tuesday, suggesting the leadership would hear everybody out but reiterating the mission statement of the DCCC itself.

“We are in the middle of ongoing conversations because we embrace different positions,” Jeffries said. “But at the end of the day, the single mission of the DCCC is to protect and preserve the majority.”

Jeffries added: “The core mission of the DCCC is to make sure House Democrats remain in the majority.”

Jeffries comments come after both Ocasio-Cortez and Pressley blasted the DCCC policy over the weekend, with Ocasio-Cortez even urging a pause in all donations to the DCCC and encouraging donors to give directly to “swing candidates” themselves.

Their fight has, in turn, been promoted and cheered by allies on the left, including Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., the vice-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Arguing that the DCCC policy “stifles competition and blackballs any consultant who works for a challenger,” Khanna complained in comments to The Intercept that the DCCC policy was “heavy-handed.”

“This unprecedented grab of power is a slap in the face of Democratic voters across the nation,” Khanna said. “Let’s be clear. If this policy remains in place, it will mean that we will not allow new Ayanna Pressleys or AOCs to emerge. It’s simply wrong.”

Rep. Katherine Clark, D-Mass., the vice chairwoman of the House Democratic Caucus, argued on Tuesday that her party’s attention should not be focused on dealing with outside political groups, but on making sure that Democratic votes are counted and the party’s initiatives are fulfilled.

“The focus of the caucus is not political consultants, it’s to protect the vote,” she said.

The DCCC has previously stated in a letter that its core mission is keeping the party's newly won majority in the House by “electing House Democrats, which includes supporting and protecting incumbents.”

The letter then clearly states that the committee “will not conduct business with, nor recommend to any of its targeted campaigns, any consultant that works with an opponent of a sitting Member of the House Democratic Caucus."

Britain’s Boris Johnson criticized for failing to declare stake in property

LONDON (Reuters) – Boris Johnson has been reprimanded for a second time in five months by the British parliament’s standards watchdog for failing to declare private income within the correct time limits.

The office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards found Johnson was a year late in registering a 20 percent share in a property in Somerset, in the west of England, from which he drew rental income.

It criticized what it described as Johnson’s “lack of respect” and accused him of “a pattern of behavior” after he had to apologize in December for failing to declare royalties from books he has written.

Johnson’s parliamentary office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The standards commission said Johnson displayed “an over-casual attitude toward obeying the rules”. It said Johnson was “not demonstrating the leadership” expected of a senior member of parliament.

Johnson, who led the 2016 Brexit campaign, is viewed as a possible contender to replace Prime Minister Theresa May as Conservative Party leader.

Since resigning as foreign secretary last year in opposition to May’s Brexit plans, Johnson has been writing a weekly column for Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, on a yearly salary of 275,000 pounds ($358,820).

In December, Johnson apologized for failing to declare almost 53,000 pounds earnings on time.

New Zealander pleads guilty to sharing mosque shooting video

A Christchurch businessman has pleaded guilty to sharing a livestream video that was recorded by a gunman last month as he began killing 50 people at two mosques.

Philip Arps pleaded guilty to two counts of distributing the mosque video and will remain in jail until he's sentenced on June 14. He faces a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison.

Prosecutors accused the 44-year-old of sending the video to an unknown person and instructing that person to insert crosshairs and to include a kill count. Prosecutors say he then forwarded the entire chilling 17-minute video to 30 associates.

New Zealand's Chief Censor David Shanks banned both the video and a manifesto written by the white supremacist accused of the attack, making it illegal to view, possess or distribute them.

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

A Baha’i advocacy group has expressed concerns over the fate of minority Baha’is at the hands of Yemen’s Houthi rebels ahead of the appeals hearing for one of the community leaders sentenced to death.

The Baha’i International Community said in a statement Friday that the hearing for Hamed bin Haydara, detained in 2013 and sentenced to death last year on espionage and apostasy charges, is due on Tuesday.

The statement quotes Bani Dugal, the Baha’i community representative at the United Nations, as saying the prosecution hasn’t addressed Haydara’s appeal but is instead making “absurd, wide-ranging accusations.”

International rights groups have decried the prosecution of Yemeni Baha’is by the Iran-backed Houthis.

Iran has banned the Baha’i religion, which was founded in 1844 by a Persian nobleman considered a prophet by followers.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani speaks during the inauguration of the newly-elected parliament in Kabul

KABUL (Reuters) – Afghan President Ashraf Ghani encouraged newly-elected lawmakers to participate in the peace process with the Taliban as he opened on Friday the first session of parliament since a controversial election.

Ghani has invited thousands of politicians, religious scholars and rights activists to an assembly known as a loya jirga next week to discuss ways to end the 17-year war.

Several opposition leaders have said they will boycott the four-day assembly in Kabul, saying it was pulled together without their input and is being used by Ghani as he seeks a second term in a September presidential election.

“We have presented the peace plan on a regular basis and we are committed to it,” Ghani said in the first session since parliamentary elections marred by technical problems, militant attacks and accusations of voting fraud last year.

“Based on this plan, there will be no peace deal and negotiation that does not have the green card of the parliament,” he added.

Officials from the United States and the Taliban have held several rounds of talks to end the Afghan war.

U.S. negotiator, Zalmay Khalilzad, has reported some progress toward an accord on a U.S. troop withdrawal and on how the Taliban would prevent extremists from using Afghanistan to launch attacks as al Qaeda did on Sept. 11, 2001.

The insurgents have so far rejected U.S. demands for a ceasefire and talks on the country’s political future that would include Afghan government officials.

The loya jirga, a centuries-old institution used to build consensus among competing tribes, factions and ethnic groups, is an attempt by Ghani to influence the peace talks and cement his position for a second term, Afghan politicians and Western diplomats say.

Amid growing political divisions in Kabul, opposition politicians have demanded that Ghani step down when his mandate ends next month, and give way to an interim government to oversee peace talks with the Taliban. Ghani has ruled that out.

The country’s top court said last week Ghani can stay in office until the presidential election in September.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein Thursday defended special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation while slamming former President Barack Obama’s administration for being slow to take action on Russian interference in U.S. elections and ex-FBI Director James Comey for telling Congress the agency was investigating collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

“Our nation is safer, elections are more secure, and citizens are better informed about covert foreign influence schemes,” Rosenstein said in a speech to the Armenian Bar Association, marking his first public remarks after the Mueller report was released, reports CBS News.

He also pointed out that the investigation revealed a pattern of computer hacking and the use of social media to undermine elections as “only the tip of the iceberg of a comprehensive Russian strategy to influence elections, promote social discord, and undermine America, just like they do in many other countries,” reports The Wall Street Journal.

The Obama administration also made “critical decisions,” including choosing not to publicize the full story about Russian hackers and social media trolling, “and how they relate to a broader strategy to undermine America,” said Rosenstein.

He noted that the Mueller probe began after Comey disclosed during a hearing before Congress that President Donald Trump “pressured him to close the investigation and the president denied that the conversation occurred.”

Rosenstein said two years ago, when he was confirmed, he was told by a Republican senator that he would be in charge of the probe and that he’d report the results to the American people.

However, he said he didn’t promise to do that, because it is “not our job to render conclusive factual findings. We just decide whether it is appropriate to file criminal charges.”

BEIJING (Reuters) – Britain must get to the bottom of the leak of confidential discussions during a top-level security meeting about the role of China’s Huawei Technologies in 5G network supply chains, British finance minister Philip Hammond said on Friday.

News that Britain’s National Security Council, attended by senior ministers and spy chiefs, had agreed on Tuesday to bar Huawei from all core parts of the country’s 5G network and restrict its access to non-core elements was leaked to a national newspaper.

The leak of secret discussions has sparked anger in parliament and amongst Britain’s intelligence community. Britain’s most senior civil servant Mark Sedwill has launched an inquiry and written to ministers who were at the meeting.

“My understanding from London (is) that an investigation has been announced into apparent leaks from the NSC meeting earlier this week,” said Hammond, speaking on the sidelines of a summit on China’s Belt and Road initiative in Beijing.

“To my knowledge there has never been a leak from a National Security Council meeting before and therefore I think it is very important that we get to the bottom of what happened here,” he told Reuters in a pooled interview.

British culture minister Jeremy Wright said on Thursday he could not rule out a criminal investigation. The majority of the ministers at the NSC meeting have said they were not involved, according to media reports.

Hammond said he was unaware of any previous leak from a meeting of the NSC.

“It’s not about the substance of what was apparently leaked. It’s not earth-shattering information. But it is important that we protect the principle that nothing that goes on in national security council meetings must ever be repeated outside the room.”

Allowing Huawei a reduced role in building its 5G network puts Britain at odds with the United States which has told allies not to use its technology at all because of fears it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying. Huawei has categorically denied this.

There have been concerns that the NSC’s conclusion, which sources confirmed to Reuters, could upset other allies in the world’s leading intelligence-sharing network – the Five Eyes alliance of the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

However, British ministers and intelligence officials have said any final decision on 5G would not put critical national infrastructure at risk. Ciaran Martin, head of the cyber center of Britain’s main eavesdropping agency, GCHQ, played down any threat of a rift in the Five Eyes alliance.
