Hail pelts northern Texas ‘like a snowstorm,' damaging homes and vehicles

A round of severe thunderstorms moving through North Texas late Sunday blasted the region with damaging hail and left some neighborhoods looking like a winter wonderland.

The National Weather Service said the storms across the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex were fueled by a cold front that brought the risk of "large hail and damaging downburst winds."

The largest hail reports came from the Collin, Denton, and Hopkins Counties located just outside of Dallas.

“It was a good 30, 45 minutes of solid, getting smaller then bigger, golf ball size hail,” Frisco resident Marianne Ganow told FOX4.

The NWS said a preliminary report of the severe hail shows that hailstones measured between 1 inch and 2 inches, with some greater sizes reported, too.

"The largest reported hailstone occurred between Frisco and McKinney and was measured at 2.75 [inches] or about the size of a baseball!" the agency said.

The storms left behind hail that blanketed neighborhoods, and had some people sharing videos on Twitter of the spring scene that resembled something "like a snowstorm."

McKinney resident Ejae Dolor told KTVT that golf ball-sized hail broke her kitchen and car windows as it fell across the county.

“At first you hear a little hail…then it just got worse,” Dolor told the television station. “The hail was getting bigger and bigger."

The hailstorm also left numerous vehicles damaged. One family was seen by FOX4 scooping hail out of the backseat of a Toyota Camry that had its back window damaged.

Name change at heart of North Macedonia election

The first round of presidential elections in North Macedonia on Sunday is seen as a key test for the center-left government's survival in a society deeply divided by the country's name change to end a decades-old dispute with neighboring Greece.

The name change from just "Macedonia," which paves the way for the country to join NATO and the European Union, has been the main campaign issue, with one of the two front-runners vowing to challenge the agreement in the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Three university law professors, including one from the country's ethnic Albanian minority, are vying for the largely ceremonial post.

Skopje and Athens struck a deal last June for the former Yugoslav republic to change its name in exchange for Greece dropping its objections to the country joining NATO. The neighbors have been at odds over the issue since the country's independence in the early 1990s— Greece said use of the term "Macedonia" implied territorial aspirations on its own northern province of the same name and usurped its cultural and ancient heritage.

The deal has faced vociferous opposition in both countries, with critics accusing their respective governments of conceding too much.

Outgoing President Gjorge Ivanov, whose second and final five-year term ends on May 12, had tried to derail or delay the deal with Greece.

His opposition is echoed by Conservative VMRO-DPMNE party candidate Gordana Siljanovska Davkova, 63, who is the first woman to run for president in the country. She has argued the name change was a "painful and unconstitutional" move that did not enjoy popular support. She says the agreement with Greece has no legitimacy as a September referendum that approved it failed to produce a big enough turnout to be valid.

"Our victory would mean the defeat of (the government's) anti-Macedonian and anti-national policies," Siljanovska said.

Her rival, 56-year-old center-left Stevo Pendarovski, has fiercely defended the name change. Pendarovski, who was defeated by Ivanov in 2014 elections, is being supported by the governing social democrats and their junior government coalition partner, the ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration.

"We have managed to throw the clutches of the (previous conservative) regime and now we are following the path of integration, economic development and overall social progress," Pendarovski said at a rally in the capital Skopje last weekend.

"We are now recognized as serious partner by the democratic world."

Blerim Reka, a candidate for two small ethnic Albanian opposition parties who is campaigning mainly in minority areas, also supports the name change for the NATO and EU accession prospects it opens up.

Recent opinion polls indicate Pendarovski is slightly ahead of Siljanovska. A survey by the Institute for Democracy Societas Civils put Pendarovski at 27.2% support, ahead of Siljanovska with 23.5% with Blerim Reka on 11%. It put the margin of error at 3.1%.

A candidate needs 50% plus one vote of the 1.8 million registered voters to win outright in the first round, which is considered highly unlikely. A runoff has been set for May 5.

The State Electoral Commission has said more than 3,000 domestic and about 420 international observers will monitor the election.

Dem Media Won’t Admit What Obama Team Did to Trump

TUCKER CARLSON, FOX NEWS: What happens when you can no longer denounce your political opponents as Russian spies? You call them “white nationalists” instead. It’s every bit as stupid and slanderous, and even more effective in shutting them up. But what does it do the country when you whip up hatred and fear like that? We’ll tell you, just ahead.

But first tonight, attorney general William Barr has finally confirmed what has been obvious for months: The Obama administration spied on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Nothing like this has happened in modern American history. Barr dropped the news almost in passing, during testimony before Congress this morning:

BARR: I think spying on a political campaign is a big deal, a big deal.

SHAHEEN: So you are not suggesting though that spying occurred?

BARR: Well, I guess -- I think spying did occur. Yes, I think spying did occur. ... I am not suggesting that it wasn’t adequately predicated but I need to explore that.

There’s no disputing Barr’s first point: Spying on a presidential campaign is a big deal, especially when it was authorized by a rival administration. Imagine if, a year from now, the Trump administration allowed the FBI to surveil officials in the Kamala Harris for president campaign. Imagine if, when caught, Trump pointed to opposition research generated by the RNC as justification for that surveillance. How would the media react to that? Like it was a major, jaw-dropping scandal. And this show would heartily agree. We wouldn’t defend it. Law enforcement should never be used as a partisan political tool, no matter who it benefits.

But the media doesn’t feel that way about Obama’s spying. They refuse to admit it was even spying. Professional dumb person, Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post, attacked the attorney general for daring to bring up the topic at all. She called Barr “Trump’s toad.” CNN, meanwhile, assured it’s viewers that there is “little evidence” that spying occurred. But that’s a lie. There is plenty of evidence. We’ve had it for months. In 2016 and 2017, the FBI wiretapped Paul Manafort, Trump’s former campaign chairman. Former Trump aide Carter Page was spied on extensively, even though it was obvious from day one that he wasn’t a Russian spy. Last year, we learned that the FBI used an informant to feed them information from inside the Trump campaign. This is all spying. There’s no other word for it. When Trump complained about it, Democrats and their employees in the media called him a liar:

ADAM SCHIFF: there is no evidence to support any allegation that the FBI or any intelligence agency placed a spy in the trump campaign

DON LEMON: His baseless claims of spies.

JEFFREY TOOBIN: The so-called spy issue, first of all, there's absolutely no evidence there was a spy. So, it's really a fake issue.

DAVID CORN: This phony baloney story about a spy in the campaign. (edit) To call them a conspiracy theory is to give them too much credit. Just fake facts.

ERIN BURNETT: All the other people who've seen the intelligence in your own party are saying there's just no there-there. I'm wondering what it will take for you, Congressman Zeldin, to say he's full of it.

He lied. He’s crazy. It’s a “conspiracy theory.” As it turns out, there was in fact a conspiracy to hide the truth. But Trump wasn’t leading it. Jim Clapper was:

JOY BEHAR: Was the FBI spying on Trump's campaign?

JAMES CLAPPER: No, they were not. They were spying on, a term I don't particularly like, but on what the Russians were doing, trying to understand were the Russians infiltrating, trying to gain access, trying to gain leverage and influence. It's what they do.

JOY BEHAR: So, why doesn't he like that? He should be happy about that?

CLAPPER: He should be.

Got that? The Obama administration wasn’t spying. They were just watching him without his knowledge. On behalf of the opposing party. In the closing months of a bitter presidential campaign. No big deal. Trump ought to be grateful for it. The Obama people cared enough to surveil his staff. They’re patriotic that way. Big hearted people.

Come on. There’s got to be a limit to how much lying a country can take from its leaders. We’re definitely reached ours. Russian collusion didn’t happen. Domestic spying did. We have a right to know who participated in it, who authorized it and what their motives were. We have have a right to know that immediately, right now, without redactions. This country doesn’t belong to retired Obama staffers, intel agency heads and mindless CNN contributors. It’s a democracy. We ought to act like it.

Florida man in Easter bunny costume caught in viral brawl reveals who he is, why he hopped into action

A costumed stranger fighting for justice removed his mask Monday -- but it wasn't Bruce Wayne revealing he's Batman or Peter Parker confessing he's Spider-Man.

It turns out the person seen in an Easter bunny outfit brawling with two others this weekend in a viral video has a familiar identity: Florida man.

Antoine McDonald, still dressed in the holiday getup he purchased at Walmart, admitted to being the man behind the whiskers and wiggling nose during an interview Monday with FOX35 Orlando.

McDonald said he was out Easter Sunday with his cousin and friend heading to a club in downtown Orlando -- and dressed from floppy ear to thumper in the rabbit attire -- when the group saw a man spit on a woman, who then retaliated by punching the expectorator.

“I see this lady and this guy going back and forth, and I’m just looking at it and walking," McDonald told FOX35 Orlando. "Then I see him spit on her, and she starts hitting him, so I walk over there, I try to help."

At that point, the man and woman started tussling.

"I try to break up the fight at first," McDonald said. "I felt I had to do something to help get him off of her to make sure she got away from the fight safely and unharmed.”

Video taken by a club promoter, who goes by "workfth" on Instagram, showed a person in an Easter bunny costume appearing to try to pull two people apart before eventually throwing several punches himself.

Antoine McDonald identified himself as the person underneath the Easter bunny suit.

The fight continued for several seconds, with the costumed Easter bunny delivering vicious body blows (instead of the usual chocolate-filled baskets). Bystanders watched and shouted as the surreal scene before a police officer finally jumped in and broke up the bunny beatdown.

“Only in Florida. only in Orlando you see a bunny fighting. You’ve got to pull your phone out,” the promoter told FOX35.

The video was posted on Instagram on Sunday night and, quick as a rabbit, garnered more than 1 million views in a day.

No arrests were made Sunday night and McDonald said he and his friends departed the scene and continued with their festivities. He said he didn’t expect to receive so much attention from the bizarre incident.

ISTANBUL (Reuters) – Turkey’s unemployment rate jumped to 13.5 percent in the November-January period, its highest level in nine years, official data showed on Friday, in a fresh sign of the impact of last year’s currency crisis.

The economy contracted a sharper than expected 3 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018, its worst performance in nearly a decade, indicating last year’s near 30 percent slide in the lira had tipped it into recession.

The number of people registered as unemployed jumped to 4.3 million in the three months to January, a surge of more than one million from a year earlier when the jobless rate stood at 12.7 percent, data from the Turkish Statistical Institute showed.

In the last three months of 2018, the unemployment rate was 12.3 percent.

In February, the government and Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges launched a campaign to boost employment, which they say will provide jobs for 2.5 million people.

Both President Tayyip Erdogan and his son-in-law Finance Minister Berat Albayrak have said Turkey has left the worst of its economic troubles behind.

Non-agricultural unemployment stood at 15.6 percent in the November-January period, the data showed, up from 14.3 percent during October-December.

ECB’s Enria says merged banking giant must have extra capital, be ‘resolvable’

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – A new banking giant resulting from a merger must have extra capital and a legal structure that allows authorities to wind it down if it fails, the European Central Bank’s top watchdog said on Thursday.

“If a bank becomes too big, complex or interconnected… it needs to have additional capital,” Andrea Enria said when asked in the European Parliament about a possible tie-up between Germany’s Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank.

“Even if you become big you should be resolvable so the banks should prove that they have structures that are not preventing a smooth resolution in case of crisis,” he added.

“These are the two main safeguards that you need to look at when you look at mergers,” Enria said.

(Reuters) – Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Friday he had assured China’s Huawei Technologies that it would not face discrimination in the rollout of Italy’s 5G telecoms network.

Conte was speaking on a visit to China where he said he met Huawei’s chief executive, Ren Zhengfei. The prime minister’s comments were carried in Italy by TV broadcaster Sky Italia.

“I told him that we have adopted some precautions, some measures to protect our interests that demand very high levels of security … not only from Huawei but any company entering into the 5G arena,” he said.

Huawei, the world’s biggest producer of telecoms equipment, is under intense scrutiny after the United States told allies not to use its technology because of fears it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying. Huawei has categorically denied this.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump on Friday was expected to announce his intention to revoke the United States’ status as a signatory of the Arms Trade Treaty, which was signed in 2013 by then-President Barack Obama but never ratified by Congress, two U.S. officials said.

Trump was expected to announce the decision in a speech in Indianapolis, to the National Rifle Association, the officials said. The NRA, a powerful gun lobby group, has long been opposed to the treaty, which was negotiated at the United Nations.

By Margaryta Chornokondratenko

KIEV (Reuters) – A Ukrainian computer game that brings to life a town abandoned after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster may not sound like everyone’s idea of fun but has attracted 60,000 people globally since its launch in October.

Players of “Isotopium: Chernobyl” drive tanks around the ghost town of Prypyat near Chernobyl, knocking out competitors as they search for an energy source called isotopium and collecting points every time they find some.

While the game takes its theme from the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in northern Ukraine, which marked its 33rd anniversary on Friday, it was also inspired by the 2009 science fiction film “Avatar”.

Newcomers to the game think they have entered a virtual world when in fact they are controlling a real robot, equipped with a camera and computer, which makes its way around a model of the town rendered down to the tiniest detail.

“When playing our game, for the first 5-10 minutes many players don’t understand that it is not fictional,” said the game’s co-founder Sergey Beskrestnov. “They message us saying: ‘You have cool texture, you have good graphics, your designer is good, well done. You have a cool operating system.’

“People then reply: ‘It is not an operating system, it is real,’ and the player can’t believe it is real,” said Beskrestnov, speaking mid-game from Prypyat city square as he towers over surrounding five-storey buildings.

Kiev-born Beskrestnov was just 12 years old when on April 26, 1986 a botched test at the nuclear plant in the then Soviet Union sent clouds of smoldering nuclear material across large swathes of Europe, forced over 50,000 people, including Beskrestnov’s family, to evacuate and poisoned unknown numbers of workers involved in its clean-up.

Beskrestnov and his partner Alexey Fateyev used Google maps and hundreds of pictures from the Chernobyl area to recreate Prypyat landmarks, including residential buildings, a hotel, concert hall, amusement park and a stadium.

The game’s real-scale model occupies a 180 square meter (1,938 sq. ft) basement of a residential building in the Ukraine city of Brovary, just 150 km (93 miles) from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and 30 km east of Kiev.

Miniature radioactivity warning signs, graffiti on the walls of abandoned buildings and tables and chairs left scattered inside a small cafe all add to the creepy atmosphere of a once lively town.

“It’s a really neat concept …,” Shaun Prescott wrote in a review of the game published by PC Gamer magazine in January. “Controlling the tanks is kinda cumbersome, but they are tanks, after all.”

An attentive player will notice at least one inaccuracy – the real Chernobyl nuclear power plant is not located in town as it is in the game.

It costs $9 to immerse in the atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic town for an hour but only 20 people at a time can play simultaneously. Beskrestnov’s company, Remote Games, said 62,615 people around the world have registered to play the game, including around 15,000 in France and 10,000 in the United States.

A camera fixed on top of a moving tank broadcasts high quality signal in real time, allowing players from as far apart as Australia and Canada enjoy the game without facing any time delay in delivering video signals.

Its creators next ambition is to devise a game featuring the colonization of Mars in which 1,000 people will be able to simultaneously control robots on different missions involved in the operation.

“Many people advise us to contact Elon Musk directly because it resonates his dreams and ideas,” Beskrestnov jokes.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – Initial optimism over first-quarter results from Starbucks Corp was waning fast on Wall Street on Friday, as analysts questioned the longer-term prospects of its new sales push given subdued overall customer traffic numbers especially in China.

The company on Thursday beat brokerage estimates for quarterly same-store sales on the back of demand for its new Cloud Macchiato, Matcha tea and cold brews in the United States.

However, BTIG’s Peter Saleh was one of a number of sector analysts who said while customers forking out for higher-priced new drinks had helped drive growth in same-store sales, “anemic” traffic at cafes remained a concern.

He and others pointed to a 1 percent decline in footfall at cafes in the Chinese market, viewed as crucial to the chain’s growth for the foreseeable future.

More broadly, transaction numbers, the substitute analysts use for customer traffic, were unchanged in all three of the company’s global regions.

Shares in the company, which hit a record high after the results on Thursday, fell 1 percent in morning trade.

“We remain cautious given near-term headwinds surrounding China, including cannibalization, increasing competition (and) a slowing economy,” Wedbush analyst Nick Setyan said.

Starbucks has also poured money into beefing up its delivery network in China as it battles with local startup Luckin Coffee, whose speedy growth led it to file for an IPO in the United States earlier this week.

New menu items and partnerships with delivery services, the heart of the company’s strategy to win back customers lost to artisanal coffee shops and cheaper fast-food rivals, did help Starbucks’ sales in its home market.

However, analysts said growth in China may continue to be subdued.

Wells Fargo analyst Bonnie Herzog said she expects store expansion in China to take priority over comparable sales growth.

She downgraded her rating on Starbucks’ to “market perform” from “outperform”, arguing that the company facing tough sales comparisons later on in 2019 from last year and the current rich valuation of shares meant the stock had limited room to rise.

“Investors will be hesitant to invest new money in a stock with a topline that, while still strong, is unlikely to meaningfully accelerate,” Herzog said.

Still, the company’s solid same-store growth in the United States, improving profit margins and a lower tax rate for the rest of the year led at least 6 Wall Street brokerages to raise their price targets on the stock to as high as $81.

11 of 29 brokerages rate Starbucks “buy” or higher, 17 “hold” and 1 “sell” or lower. Their median price target is $75.
