Gaston Sauro’s first-half goal was the difference when Columbus Crew SC remained unbeaten with a 1-0 victory against FC Dallas at Mapfre Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday.

Zack Steffen made two saves for his second consecutive shutout for the Crew (2-0-1) and his 21st in 66 career MLS games.

Jesse Gonzalez also had two saves for Dallas (1-1-1), which played its first away match.

Sauro was at the edge of the 6-yard box to flick in a corner kick by Pedro Santos in the 10th minute to give the center back his second goal of the season as his comeback continues.

He missed the entire 2017 season after surgery to repair severe cartilage damage incurred from a posterior cruciate ligament injury in May 2016. He did not return to the field until May 27 of last season and appeared in seven regular season and two postseason games.

He had gone 24 matches without a goal until scoring from a header off corner kick in the season opener versus the New York Red Bulls on March 2.

The Crew squandered an opportunity to make it 2-0 in the 22nd minute when Gyasi Zardes couldn’t corral a bouncing rebound of a shot by Robinho that Gonzalez pushed away.

Dallas in the first half was outshot 7-2 and had none on target compared to two for the Crew despite the possession being nearly equal.

The first Dallas shot on goal almost resulted in the equalizer by Michael Barrios in the 57th minute. He took a turnover by Wil Trapp and forced Steffen off his line to make the point-blank stop that Sauro cleared it.

Dallas defender Matt Hedges made his 213th appearance to move past Bobby Rhine into second place on the team’s all-time games played list behind Jason Kreis’ 247.

The Crew plays the first of four straight Eastern Conference games when it goes to Philadelphia on March 23. FC Dallas hosts Colorado the same day.

A combined funeral for 4 co-workers slain in North Dakota

A combined memorial service will be held for a Mandan business owner and three employees found slain earlier this week.

The service for Robert Fakler, William and Lois Cobb and Adam Fuehrer will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bismarck Community Church. Fakler was co-owner of RJR Maintenance and Management and the Cobbs and Fuehrer were employees of the Mandan business where their bodies were found Monday morning. Police say the deaths are homicides, but have not said how the victims died. No one is in custody.

Eastgate Funeral and Cremation Service director Bob Eastgate tells the Bismarck Tribune the families decided to have a combined service because the four were not only co-workers, but good friends.

The memorial service is open to the public.

Alabama police chief “disgusted” by arrest video

An Alabama police chief said Wednesday that he is "disgusted" by a video recording showing an officer threatening and cursing a woman during a traffic stop that turned violent.

Tuscaloosa Police Chief Steve Anderson commented during a news conference in which he released police bodycam video of the arrest of Jhasmynn Sheppard, 22. The way officers treated the woman was "not what we teach," he said.

Both an officer who initially stopped the woman and another officer who arrived as a backup have been placed on desk duty and face disciplinary procedures, Anderson said. He didn't release the full name of either man.

Sheppard was suspected of leaving the scene of a car accident Friday. The video shows an officer trying to handcuff her less than 10 seconds after requesting her driver's license. Another officer arrives moments later.

"Sir, please don't do me like this," the woman is heard saying early in the confrontation. She struggled as an officer tried to handcuff her, and both wound up on the pavement. Video shot by bystanders showed an officer hitting the woman with a collapsible baton.

The video released by Anderson shows an officer cursing the woman, threatening to kick out her teeth and saying he could have shot her. The initial physical confrontation between the officer and the woman appeared justified, the chief said, but the curses and threats were out of bounds.

Anderson said he was "disgusted" and "very disappointed" by the video, which he said shows officers violated department training throughout the encounter.

One officer's account of the arrest was previously detailed in court documents filed Tuesday.

The officer said the woman was making "furtive" movements and incoherent statements and then resisted arrest. The officer said the woman took his baton, but on video a man is heard claiming she grabbed his genitals.

Montana shootings leave 1 dead, trooper and 2 others wounded

A Montana Highway Patrol trooper who was investigating a shooting that killed one person and injured two others was himself shot and critically injured Friday after finding the suspect's vehicle, officials said. Authorities later arrested a 29-year-old suspect.

Trooper Wade Palmer, 35, was among the officers searching for the driver of a Cadillac Escalade who flashed his lights at a pickup truck ahead of him and then opened fire on the truck's occupants when it stopped Thursday night in Missoula, according to charging documents.

The bullets struck Casey Blanchard and Shelley Hayes, along with Blanchard's mother, Julie, who had driven to a Missoula bar to pick the friends up, Julie Blanchard told investigators. Authorities found Hayes dead in the truck's backseat. Casey Blanchard had been shot multiple times but was conscious and Julie Blanchard also had been shot and was conscious, according to the court documents.

Julie Blanchard said the Cadillac followed them from the bar and she pulled over thinking the driver may need help, according to the charging documents filed by Missoula County Chief Deputy Attorney Jason Marks. Investigators said it appeared two handguns and "an AR-15 style rifle" had been used in the shooting.

A little over an hour after that shooting, Palmer found the Escalade on U.S. Highway 93 near a bar in the small town of Evaro about 10 miles (16 kilometers) away. Palmer reported to dispatchers that he was under fire, and then didn't answer his radio, Marks wrote.

Another trooper arrived and found Palmer wounded and still buckled into his patrol car, a statement from Montana Highway Patrol officials said. The shooter had fled.

Police shut down that stretch of U.S. Highway 93, warned residents to lock their doors and then spent hours searching before they arrested Johnathan Bertsch at about 6:15 a.m. He has been charged with deliberate homicide and three counts of attempted deliberate homicide.

He was being held in the Missoula County Detention Center, and it was unclear whether he had a lawyer. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, Marks said.

Palmer initially was taken to a Missoula hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. Dozens of patrol cars crowded the hospital's parking lot as officers from various law enforcement agencies gathered to pay their respects, and they later joined a motorcade that accompanied Palmer to the airport to be transferred to a Salt Lake City hospital for treatment.

Authorities found Bertsch with the help of his father, Burton Bertsch, who said his son had called him and told him, "I had a road rage incident. ... I think I might have shot a cop," according to the charging documents.

Authorities spoke to Johnathan Bertsch using Burton's phone, but he refused to tell officers where he was. They found him after someone called 911 to report the Cadillac parked at the bottom of the driveway along a road near the bar, documents said.

Palmer has been a trooper since 2012. He has a wife and two children, and he won the law enforcement agency's highest honor, the Medal of Valor, in 2015.

Western banks help Saudis raise $12 billion in bonds

Saud Arabia's oil company Aramco - the most profitable company in the world - has raised $12 billion in a bond issue that shows Western investors are keen to do business with the kingdom despite the scandal over the killing of a dissident journalist last year.

Bonds from Saudi Aramco began trading in London on Wednesday after strong interest from investors, with bids reportedly reaching as much as $100 billion. The Saudis had initially wanted to raise $10 billion but issued $12 billion in the end, according to financial information provider FactSet.

Saudi Arabia faced international condemnation after the assassination in October of Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi agents in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. But the bond sale, which was run by JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, and others, shows continued interest from Western companies.

Man arrested in reputed New York crime boss killing

A man accused of killing the reputed boss of New York's Gambino crime family has been arrested ahead of a court appearance.

The New York Police Department says Anthony Comello was booked on murder, assault and weapon possession charges at around 4 a.m. on Monday.

Comello, who's 24, is accused of gunning down Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali outside the mobster's Staten Island home.

He was initially taken into custody in New Jersey and agreed on March 18 to be extradited to New York.

Authorities say the March 13 slaying may have been related to a romantic dispute instead of mob business.

Comello's attorney has said he'll fight the charges. Robert Gottlieb says the accusations contradict the characterizations of people who know Comello best.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States designated Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard Corps a foreign terrorist organization, President Donald Trump said on Monday, marking the first time Washington has formally labeled another country’s military a terrorist group.

Critics have warned that the move could open U.S. military and intelligence officials to similar actions by unfriendly governments. The United States has already blacklisted dozens of entities and people for affiliations with the IRGC, but not the organization as a whole.

SEOUL (Reuters) – K-pop and drama star Park Yu-chun was arrested on Friday on charges of buying and using illegal drugs, a court said, the latest in a series of scandals to hit the South Korean entertainment business.

Suwon District Court approved the arrest warrant for Park, 32, due to concerns over possible destruction of evidence and flight risk, a court spokesman told Reuters.

Park is suspected of having bought about 1.5 grams of methamphetamine with his former girlfriend earlier this year and using the drug around five times, an official at the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency said.

Park has denied wrongdoing, saying he had never taken drugs, and he again denied the charges in court, Yonhap news agency said.

Park’s contract with his management agency had been canceled and he would leave the entertainment industry, Park’s management agency, C-JeS Entertainment, said on Wednesday.

Park was a member of boyband TVXQ between 2003 and 2009 before leaving the group with two other members, forming the group JYJ.

A scandal involving sex tapes, prostitutes and secret chat about rape led at least four other K-pop stars to quit the industry earlier this year.

The cases sparked a nationwide drugs bust and investigations into tax evasion and police collusion at night clubs and other nightlife spots.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Reuters) – Four years ago, Donald Trump campaigned in small towns like Marshalltown, Iowa, vowing to restore economic prosperity to the U.S. heartland.

In his bid to replace Trump in the White House, Pete Buttigieg is taking a similar tack. The difference, he says, is that he can point to a model of success: South Bend, Indiana, the revitalized city where he has been mayor since 2012.

The Democratic presidential contender has vaulted to the congested field’s top tier in recent weeks, drawing media and donor attention for his youth, history-making status as the first openly gay major presidential candidate and a resume that includes military service in Afghanistan.

But Buttigieg’s main argument for his candidacy is that he is a turnaround artist in the mold of Trump, although the Democrat does not expressly invoke the comparison with the Republican president.

“I’m not going around saying we’ve fixed every problem we’ve got,” Buttigieg, 37, said after a house party with voters in Marshalltown. “But I’m proud of what we have done together, and I think it’s a very powerful story.”

Critics argue improving the fortunes of a Midwestern city of 100,000 people does not qualify Buttigieg, who has never held national office, for the presidency of a country of 330 million. Others say South Bend still has pockets of despair and that minorities, in particular, have failed to benefit from its growth.

Buttigieg has told crowds in Iowa and elsewhere that his experience in reviving a struggling Rust Belt community allows him to make a case to voters that other Democratic candidates cannot. That may give him the means to win back some of the disaffected Democratic voters who turned their backs on Hillary Clinton in 2016 to vote for Trump.

Watching Buttigieg at a union hall in Des Moines last week, Rick Ryan, 45, a member of the United Steelworkers, lamented how many of his fellow union workers voted for Trump. The president turned in the best performance by a Republican among union households since Ronald Reagan in 1984.

Ryan said he hoped someone like Buttigieg could return them to the Democratic fold.

“He’s aware of the decline in the labor force in America, not just in Indiana or Des Moines or anywhere else,” Ryan said. “Jobs are going overseas. We need a find to way to bring that back.”

Randy Tucker, 56, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, said Trump appealed to union members “desperate for somebody to reach out to them, to help them, to listen to their voice.”

Buttigieg could do the same, he said. “In my heart right now, he’s No. 1.”

PAST VS. FUTURE

Buttigieg stresses a key difference in his and Trump’s approaches.

Trump, he tells crowds, is mired in the past, promising to rebuild the 20th century industrial economy. Buttigieg argues the pledge is misleading and unrealistic.

Buttigieg says his focus is on the future, and he often talks about what the country might look like decades from now.

“The only way that we can cultivate what makes America great is to look to the future and not be afraid of it,” Buttigieg said in Marshalltown.

Buttigieg knows his sexual preference may be a barrier to winning some blue-collar voters. But he notes that after he came out as gay in 2015, he won a second term as mayor with 80 percent of the vote in conservative Indiana.

Earlier this month, he announced his presidential bid at the hulking plant in South Bend that stopped making Studebaker autos more than 50 years ago. After lying dormant for decades, the building is being transformed into a high-tech hub after Buttigieg and other city leaders realized it would never again attract a large-scale industrial company.

“That building sat as a powerful reminder. We hoped we would get back that major employer that would fix our economy,” said Jeff Rea, president of the regional Chamber of Commerce.

Buttigieg is praised locally for spurring more than $100 million in downtown investment. During his two terms, unemployment has fallen to 4.1 percent from 11.8 percent.

But a study released in 2017 by the nonprofit group Prosperity Now said not all of the city’s residents had shared in its rebound. The median income for African-Americans remained half that of whites, while the unemployment rate for blacks was double.

Regina Williams-Preston, a city councilor running to replace Buttigieg as mayor, credits him for the revitalized downtown. But she said he had a “blind spot” when it came to focusing on troubled neighborhoods like the one she represents and only grew more engaged after community pressure.

“He understands it now,” she said. “The next step is figuring out how to open the doors of opportunity for everyone.”

‘ONE OF US’

Trump touts the fact that the United States added almost 300,000 manufacturing jobs last year as evidence he made good on his promise to restore the industrial sector. But that growth still left the country with fewer manufacturing jobs than in 2008.

The robust U.S. economy is likely the president’s greatest asset in his re-election bid, particularly in states he carried in 2016 such as Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. He won Buttigieg’s home state by 19 points over Clinton in 2016.

Sean Bagniewski, chairman of the Democratic Party in Polk County, Iowa, said Buttigieg would be well positioned to compete with Trump in the Midwest.

“People love the fact that he’s a mayor,” said Bagniewski, who has not endorsed a candidate in the nominating contest. “If you can talk about a positive future, and if you actually have experience that can do it, that’s a compelling vision in Iowa.”

Nan Whaley, the mayor of Dayton, Ohio, which faces many of the same challenges as South Bend, agreed.

“He’s one of us,” Whaley said. “That helps.”

MONTREAL/OTTAWA (Reuters) – Rising waters were prompting further evacuations in central Canada on Thursday, with the mayor of the country’s capital, Ottawa, declaring a state of emergency and Quebec authorities warning that a hydroelectric dam was at risk of breaking.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson declared the emergency in response to rising water levels along the Ottawa River and weather forecasts that called for significant rainfall on Friday.

In a statement on Twitter, Watson asked for help from the Ontario provincial government and the country’s military.

He warned that “flood levels are currently forecasted to exceed the levels that caused significant damage to numerous properties in the city of Ottawa in 2017.”

Spring flooding had killed one person and forced more than 900 people from their homes in Canada’s Quebec province as of 1 p.m. on Thursday, according to a government website.

Ottawa has received 80 requests for service related to potential flooding such as sandbagging, a city spokeswoman said.

The prospect of more rain over the next 24 to 48 hours triggered concerns on Thursday that the hydroelectric dam at Bell Falls in the western part of Quebec could be at risk of failing because of rising water levels.

Quebec’s provincial police said 250 people were protectively removed from homes in the area as of late afternoon in case the dam on the Rouge River breaks.

The dam is now at its full flow capacity of 980 cubic meters per second of water, said Francis Labbé, a spokesman for the province’s state-owned utility, Hydro Quebec. He said Hydro Quebec expected the flow could rise to 1,200 cubic meters per second of water over the next two days.

“We have to take the worst-case scenario into consideration, since we`re already at the maximum capacity,” Labbé said by phone.

The dam is part of a power station that no longer produces electricity, but is regularly inspected by Hydro Quebec, he said.

BELFAST (Reuters) – Detectives investigating the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Northern Ireland last week suspect the gunman who shot her dead is in his late teens as they made a further appeal to the local community who they believe know his identity.

McKee’s killing by an Irish nationalist militant during a riot in Londonderry has sparked outrage in the province where a 1998 peace deal mostly ended three decades of sectarian violence that cost the lives of some 3,600 people.

The New IRA, one of a small number of groups that oppose the peace accord, has said one of its members shot the 29-year-old reporter dead in the Creggan area of the city on Thursday when opening fire on police during a riot McKee was watching.

The killing, which followed a large car bomb in Londonderry in January that police also blamed on the New IRA, has raised fears that small marginalized militant groups are exploiting a political vacuum in the province and tensions caused by Britain’s decision to leave the European Union.

Police released footage on Friday of immediately before and after the shooting showing three men who were involved in the rioting and identified one as the gunman who they believe is in his late teens.

“I believe that the information that can help us to bring those responsible for her murder to justice lies within the community. I need the public to tell me who he is,” Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy told reporters.

Murphy said those involved in the disorder on the night were teenagers or in their early 20s, and that about 100 people were on the ground watching the trouble as it unfolded.

He added that police believed the gun used in the attack was of a similar caliber to those used before in paramilitary type attacks in Creggan.

“I recognize that people living in Creagan may find it’s difficult to come forward to speak to police. Today, I want to provide a personal reassurance that we are able to deal with those issues sensitively,” Murphy said, echoing similar appeals in recent days.
