Brunei’s crackdown on homosexuality: Why Kingdom is implementing draconian Sharia law

In an age when global awareness in decriminalizing homosexuality is gaining momentum, the excessively wealthy, Muslim-majority nation of Brunei is enraging much of the international community by moving in the opposite direction.

On Wednesday, it will officially apply the final stages of its harsh interpretation of the Islamic Penal Code known as Sharia Law.

According to the Government of Brunei’s website, those who are convicted of stealing could be sentenced with having their right hands chopped off. If they offend a second time, they may lose a left foot. The Southeast Asian nation will also have legal leeway to issue capital punishment to those who perform black magic, along with stoning for adultery and sodomy.

BRUNEI DEFENDS PLANNED EMBRACE OF EXTREME ISLAMIC LAWS

Awash with oil money, the 400,000-person kingdom has been reigned over by its sultan, 72-year-old Hassanal Bolkiah for more than 50 years, who has amassed a net worth of over $20 billion. So why the scathing law now?

According to a source closely connected to the Sultan, those closest to him consider him a “passive” person. Many say that it would be a difficult task to find a doctor in Brunei who would concede to cutting off a hand, and many seem unconvinced it will be brazenly implemented.

“The Sultan is afraid of extreme Muslims, so he wants to keep things in line,” the insider told Fox News. “It doesn’t make it right, but there are reasons.”

BEVERLY HILLS HOTEL BRACES FOR FRESH CELEBRITY BOYCOT AFTER GEORGE CLOONEY CRITICIZES SULTAN OF BRUNEI OWNER FOR SHARIA LAW

The source furthermore elaborated that a close family member – revered nationwide as a devout Muslim – was rumored to be up to “naughty” endeavors when traveling to open, western societies and the reaction of the aging Sultan was to nip the behavior in the bud.

“Apart from criminalizing and deterring acts that are against the teachings of Islam, it also aims to educate, respect and protect the legitimate rights of all individuals, society or nationality of any faiths and race,” Brunei’s Prime Minister said in a statement.

Yet U.S. experts on the issue remain deeply skeptical that it’s mere political posturing.

BILL MAHER SLAMS GEORGE CLOONEY OVER CALL FOR BEVERLY HILLS HOTEL BOYCOTT: 'IT'S CHICKENSH-- TOKENISM'

“For years, punishing homosexuality and adultery with death has not been uncommon in Sharia-law based societies. Brunei is just the latest nation to jump on this extremist, barbaric bandwagon,” Benjamin Ryberg of the Lawfare Project said. “Regardless of the motivation, Brunei’s laws fly in the face of international human rights norms.”

Benjamin Weinthal, a research fellow for the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, concurred.

“The radical Islamic ideology behind the law can rapidly turn into mass executions,” he said, pointing out that Iran’s religious regime has executed upwards of 6000 gay and lesbian people since the country’s 1979 Islamic revolution.

LGBTQ GROUPS CONDEMN TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S CAMPAIGN TO END CRIMINALIZATION OF HOMOSEXUALITY WORLDWIDE AS STUNT

The United Nations high commissioner for human rights, Michelle Bachelet, has called on Brunei to put a stop to the code’s enforcement and the U.S. State Department has expressed “concern,” stating that “some of the punishments in the law appear inconsistent with international human rights obligations.”

Despite the pushback, Brunei’s government is doubling down.

“(The Sultan) does not expect other people to accept and agree with it, but that it would suffice if they just respect the nation in the same way that it also respects them,” the official website reads.

Initial word that the Sultan has brought back Sharia attracted the ire of the Hollywood elite almost five years ago, and for months many boycotted the famed Beverly Hills Hotel and Bel Air Hotel, which are part of the Dorchester Collection that is owned by the Sultan.

George Clooney is calling for the boycott of nine hotels in the U.S. and Europe with ties to Sultan Bolkiah, who's country will implement Islamic criminal laws in April 2019 to punish gay sex by stoning offenders to death.

The protest movement eventually fizzled out with a whimper, only to be revived last week after actor and activist George Clooney penned an op-ed in industry trade Deadline, reminding the entertainment community that the barbaric laws would come into play this coming Wednesday and urged others not to “put money directly into the pockets of men who choose to stone and whip to death their own citizens for being gay or accused of adultery” but staying or dining at Dorchester properties.

According to a source connected to the Beverly Hills Hotel, the restored negative spotlight has many of the staff, who rely on tips, extremely concerned and that there was even a bomb scare over the weekend.

The hotel did not respond to a request for comment, but last week issued a statement vowing that the “Dorchester Collection emphasizes equality, respect and integrity in all areas” and “strongly values people and cultural diversity amongst guests and employees.”

France's Yellow Vests hit streets for 17th time, protest at Paris airport as numbers dwindle

French Yellow Vests protested across the country for the 17th straight weekend, briefly taking over a Paris airport as the movement sought to reignite fervor among France's working class.

Protesters are pressuring the government to reverse economic policies they see as favoring the rich. Some demonstrations have been marred by violence and vandalism.

The Yellow Vest movement has rocked France since November 2018, when hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets demanding President Emmanuel Macron’s resignation.

Late last year, in an effort to quell protests, Macron called for three months of national debate over economic reforms.

He addressed the country in December, promising to speed up tax relief and urging companies to give bonuses to workers. Macron also reiterated his promise to raise the minimum wage and said the government would scrap a planned tax hike on pensioners.

Saturday's march in Paris began near the Arc de Triomphe and was to end at the Luxembourg Gardens near the Senate.

EMMANUEL MACRON URGES EUROPE TO REJECT NATIONALISM AHEAD OF EU ELECTIONS, CALLS FOR ‘RETHINK’ ON MIGRATION

Hundreds of other demonstrators have come up with other ways to get the government's attention, including organizing a so-called flash mob at the Charles de Gaulle airport to protest proposed privatization plans, France24 reported.

A three-day sit-in on the Champ de Mars, a park facing the Eiffel Tower, was planned, but police quickly ended it, according to reports.

The protests unfolded as the Yellow Vests prepared for next Saturday, which would mark the end of Macron’s “Great National Debate.”

FRENCH BOXER-TURNED-‘YELLOW VEST’ PROTESTER CONVICTED FOR POLICE ATTACK

The movement has been gradually losing steam. Last week, only around 40,000 people protested across the whole of France, with about 4,000 in Paris, compared with hundreds of thousands last year.

The Latest: Gantz votes in Israel, calls for ‘new dawn’

The Latest on Israel's election (all times local):

9:40 a.m.

Benny Gantz, the main challenger to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel's general elections, has cast his ballot, calling for a "new dawn" for the country.

Gantz voted early on Tuesday in his hometown of Rosh Haayin in central Israel alongside his wife, Revital. He called on all Israelis to get out and vote, saying they should "take responsibility" for their democracy.

He says that voting will "let us all wake up for a new dawn, a new history."

Gantz's Blue and White party has inched ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud in polls. Netanyahu still appears to have the best chance of forming a coalition, though, with a smattering of small nationalist parties backing him.

___

07:00 a.m.

Voting has begun in the Israeli elections as the country decides whether longtime Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains in power.

Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. Tuesday with exit polls expected at the end of the voting day at 10 p.m. Official results are expected to come in overnight.

Clouded by a series of looming corruption indictments, Netanyahu is seeking a fifth term in office. It would make him Israel's longest-ever serving leader, surpassing founding father David Ben-Gurion.

He faces a stiff challenge from retired military chief Benny Gantz, whose Blue and White party has inched ahead of Netanyahu's Likud in polls. Netanyahu still appears to have the best chance of forming a coalition, though, with a smattering of small nationalist parties backing him.

VIENNA (Reuters) – European Central Bank policymaker Ewald Nowotny said on Thursday that he would favor some measures to mitigate the unintended side effects of negative rates.

“There are attempts to have a discussion around negative interest rates,” Nowotny said. “I would like to see a certain mitigation.”

ECB President Mario Draghi said on Wednesday that the ECB would study whether there were such side effects and whether they needed to be offset.

GOP Praise Trump: ‘Most Accessible President’

President Donald Trump’s sudden focus on healthcare has Republicans concerned, but GOP legislators still praise Trump for being “the most accessible president” they’ve ever seen.

"There is a lot of angst about this whole healthcare bills -- we are dealing with," said a Republican legislator who spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity. "But you aren't going to hear members say 'WTF Mr. President, what the hell did you do that for?'"

Multiple Republicans in Congress told CNN that Trump is more accessible than past presidents, frequently making calls and talking with rank-and-file members of the GOP.

"President Trump is the most accessible president that I have ever seen," said Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., who said that a few months ago he wanted to talk to Trump on a Sunday, only to hear from the president 30 minutes later.

"The first thing he said before I said anything was 'let's talk about you serving another 20 years,'" he said. "I said Mr. President, I am sorry, I called to tell you I'm not going to run for re-election."

"Even people who don't like him, when they are with him, are impressed with how easily he works a room,” Alexander continued. “I think he likes people. He lives in the moment. He's not thinking of the next day or even the next hour or the next person ... he's that kind of personality."

"He calls members frequently and he is completely available to us when we call him," said Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., referring to Trump. "I am very fortunate to have that relationship with the President."

Extraordinary European Union leaders summit in Brussels

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Friday he had assured China’s Huawei Technologies that it would not face discrimination in the rollout of Italy’s 5G telecoms network.

Conte was speaking on a visit to China where he said he met Huawei’s chief executive, Ren Zhengfei. The prime minister’s comments were carried in Italy by TV broadcaster Sky Italia.

“I told him that we have adopted some precautions, some measures to protect our interests that demand very high levels of security … not only from Huawei but any company entering into the 5G arena,” he said.

Huawei, the world’s biggest producer of telecoms equipment, is under intense scrutiny after the United States told allies not to use its technology because of fears it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying. Huawei has categorically denied this.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump on Friday was expected to announce his intention to revoke the United States’ status as a signatory of the Arms Trade Treaty, which was signed in 2013 by then-President Barack Obama but never ratified by Congress, two U.S. officials said.

Trump was expected to announce the decision in a speech in Indianapolis, to the National Rifle Association, the officials said. The NRA, a powerful gun lobby group, has long been opposed to the treaty, which was negotiated at the United Nations.

A remote controlled robot for the 'Isotopium: Chernobyl' game is seen at the game's location in Brovary

By Margaryta Chornokondratenko

KIEV (Reuters) – A Ukrainian computer game that brings to life a town abandoned after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster may not sound like everyone’s idea of fun but has attracted 60,000 people globally since its launch in October.

Players of “Isotopium: Chernobyl” drive tanks around the ghost town of Prypyat near Chernobyl, knocking out competitors as they search for an energy source called isotopium and collecting points every time they find some.

While the game takes its theme from the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in northern Ukraine, which marked its 33rd anniversary on Friday, it was also inspired by the 2009 science fiction film “Avatar”.

Newcomers to the game think they have entered a virtual world when in fact they are controlling a real robot, equipped with a camera and computer, which makes its way around a model of the town rendered down to the tiniest detail.

“When playing our game, for the first 5-10 minutes many players don’t understand that it is not fictional,” said the game’s co-founder Sergey Beskrestnov. “They message us saying: ‘You have cool texture, you have good graphics, your designer is good, well done. You have a cool operating system.’

“People then reply: ‘It is not an operating system, it is real,’ and the player can’t believe it is real,” said Beskrestnov, speaking mid-game from Prypyat city square as he towers over surrounding five-storey buildings.

Kiev-born Beskrestnov was just 12 years old when on April 26, 1986 a botched test at the nuclear plant in the then Soviet Union sent clouds of smoldering nuclear material across large swathes of Europe, forced over 50,000 people, including Beskrestnov’s family, to evacuate and poisoned unknown numbers of workers involved in its clean-up.

Beskrestnov and his partner Alexey Fateyev used Google maps and hundreds of pictures from the Chernobyl area to recreate Prypyat landmarks, including residential buildings, a hotel, concert hall, amusement park and a stadium.

The game’s real-scale model occupies a 180 square meter (1,938 sq. ft) basement of a residential building in the Ukraine city of Brovary, just 150 km (93 miles) from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and 30 km east of Kiev.

Miniature radioactivity warning signs, graffiti on the walls of abandoned buildings and tables and chairs left scattered inside a small cafe all add to the creepy atmosphere of a once lively town.

“It’s a really neat concept …,” Shaun Prescott wrote in a review of the game published by PC Gamer magazine in January. “Controlling the tanks is kinda cumbersome, but they are tanks, after all.”

An attentive player will notice at least one inaccuracy – the real Chernobyl nuclear power plant is not located in town as it is in the game.

It costs $9 to immerse in the atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic town for an hour but only 20 people at a time can play simultaneously. Beskrestnov’s company, Remote Games, said 62,615 people around the world have registered to play the game, including around 15,000 in France and 10,000 in the United States.

A camera fixed on top of a moving tank broadcasts high quality signal in real time, allowing players from as far apart as Australia and Canada enjoy the game without facing any time delay in delivering video signals.

Its creators next ambition is to devise a game featuring the colonization of Mars in which 1,000 people will be able to simultaneously control robots on different missions involved in the operation.

“Many people advise us to contact Elon Musk directly because it resonates his dreams and ideas,” Beskrestnov jokes.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – Initial optimism over first-quarter results from Starbucks Corp was waning fast on Wall Street on Friday, as analysts questioned the longer-term prospects of its new sales push given subdued overall customer traffic numbers especially in China.

The company on Thursday beat brokerage estimates for quarterly same-store sales on the back of demand for its new Cloud Macchiato, Matcha tea and cold brews in the United States.

However, BTIG’s Peter Saleh was one of a number of sector analysts who said while customers forking out for higher-priced new drinks had helped drive growth in same-store sales, “anemic” traffic at cafes remained a concern.

He and others pointed to a 1 percent decline in footfall at cafes in the Chinese market, viewed as crucial to the chain’s growth for the foreseeable future.

More broadly, transaction numbers, the substitute analysts use for customer traffic, were unchanged in all three of the company’s global regions.

Shares in the company, which hit a record high after the results on Thursday, fell 1 percent in morning trade.

“We remain cautious given near-term headwinds surrounding China, including cannibalization, increasing competition (and) a slowing economy,” Wedbush analyst Nick Setyan said.

Starbucks has also poured money into beefing up its delivery network in China as it battles with local startup Luckin Coffee, whose speedy growth led it to file for an IPO in the United States earlier this week.

New menu items and partnerships with delivery services, the heart of the company’s strategy to win back customers lost to artisanal coffee shops and cheaper fast-food rivals, did help Starbucks’ sales in its home market.

However, analysts said growth in China may continue to be subdued.

Wells Fargo analyst Bonnie Herzog said she expects store expansion in China to take priority over comparable sales growth.

She downgraded her rating on Starbucks’ to “market perform” from “outperform”, arguing that the company facing tough sales comparisons later on in 2019 from last year and the current rich valuation of shares meant the stock had limited room to rise.

“Investors will be hesitant to invest new money in a stock with a topline that, while still strong, is unlikely to meaningfully accelerate,” Herzog said.

Still, the company’s solid same-store growth in the United States, improving profit margins and a lower tax rate for the rest of the year led at least 6 Wall Street brokerages to raise their price targets on the stock to as high as $81.

11 of 29 brokerages rate Starbucks “buy” or higher, 17 “hold” and 1 “sell” or lower. Their median price target is $75.

A man accused of fatally beating a 4-month-old boy after finding out the infant wasn’t his son had been previously deported from the United States five times, most recently in late 2016, immigration officials said.

Carlos Zuniga-Aviles, a 33-year-old Honduran national, has used multiple aliases, including the fake name of Jose Agurcia-Avila he gave police in Memphis, Tennessee, following his arrest in the boy’s death earlier this month, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials told WMC-TV.

ICE officials have since filed an immigration detainer against Zuniga-Aviles, who was initially deported back to Honduras in February 2010. He was also returned to the Central American country in 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016.

“ICE will seek to take him into custody to reinstate his removal order following the resolution of the criminal charges he currently faces,” the statement reads. “Mr. Zuniga-Aviles has been removed from the US five prior times: his most recent removal by ICE to Honduras took place in December 2016.”

Zuniga-Aviles later returned to the U.S. following his removal, a felony under federal law, immigration officials said. It’s unclear exactly when he returned, but he was living with his girlfriend and the woman’s 4-month-old son in Memphis at the time of his arrest, WREG reports.
