From Israel, Pompeo arrives in Beirut for two-day meetings

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has arrived in Lebanon, the last leg of a Mideast tour that took him to Kuwait and Israel.

Pompeo is scheduled to meet with a host of Lebanese officials, including allies of the Iran-backed Hezbollah during the two-day visit, his first as secretary of state.

Pompeo hopes to step up pressure on the Shiite militant group, but could face resistance even from America's local allies, who fear that pushing too hard could spark a backlash and endanger the tiny country's fragile peace.

Pompeo's plane arrived on Friday travelling through the Cypriot airspace, as Lebanon, which is technically in a state of war with Israel, bans direct flights from Israel.

Don’t Let Vapid Celebs Influence Your Life

The college admissions scandal underscores a simple question: why are millions of people following these so-called “social media influencers” like Olivia Jade?

You’ve probably heard that Jade’s mother, Full House star Lori Loughlin, and nearly 50 others have been charged with a scheme in which federal prosecutors say wealthy parents allegedly bribed college insiders to get their children into some of the country’s most elite schools.

“The social media pages of Lori Loughlin‘s daughter were flooded with angry comments Tuesday — after the Full House actress was busted for allegedly paying bribes to get the teen into college,” reported Page Six. “The deluge began after federal prosecutors accused Loughlin and her fashion designer hubby, Mossimo Giannulli, of agreeing to pay $500,000 to get daughters Olivia Jade and Isabella Rose Giannulli designated as recruits to the University of Southern California crew team — even though they didn’t actually participate in the sport.”

Well, after surfing over to Olivia Jade’s Instagram account, one might ask why does she have over 1.3 million followers?

Instagram screenshot

Her profile looks like a generic fashion shoot album. In fact, some might even call it vapid. And yet, it apparently attracts over a million eyeballs.

This points to a societal problem in which too many people equate personal success with simply having an audience. Case in point, what exactly has this girl done besides generate a large audience for the sake of having an audience? And how has her audience benefited personally from this exchange?

But throughout history (and until recently apparently), the definition of personal success was much broader than that. It had included serving your country, being a integral part of your community, embracing self-reliance and self-determination, having a family, being an entrepreneur, creating innovations, etc.

Here the Wright Bros. achieve personal success with only a handful of onlookers as their audience.

It was never limited to simply having an audience, because in the times before the Internet, it was difficult to even have an audience and only worth doing if your livelihood depended on it, like for P.T. Barnum for example.

But now, millions of people have been socially engineered into believing that the only barometer of personal success is how many people are paying attention to you, whether you’re a so-called “social media influencer” or a suburban status chaser with an 80k truck sitting in the driveway.

Of course, a lot of these people will never have a large following, so the next best thing for them is to simply join an existing audience of some “influencer” so they can feel like they’re part of the winning team.

That mindset unfortunately handicaps people from doing something they can actually accomplish on their own, a form of personal success that they’re currently too blind to see.

Why live vicariously through your favorite football player and feel insecure about your status in life? Why not accept the fact that your own standards of personal success for yourself are different from that of an athlete who’s been randomly gifted with stellar genetics? Why not play off on your own personal strengths?

In short, personal success will never be monopolized by those who attract the most eyeballs, and that’s why a lot of these “social media influencers” have such vapid content despite attracting so much attention. But the substance is the real success!

And outside of Instagram photos and product placement, what have these “influencers” actually accomplished?

That’s why you’ve probably heard stories of Hollywood celebrities who still feel empty inside despite what they’ve achieved professionally. They don’t feel personally fulfilled by profession success and public attention alone.

And all this does tie back into the college admission scandal, namely how 20 and 30-somethings had bought into the idea that they would never be successful unless they went to college. Yet the Internet is now littered with personal stories from countless people who now have well over 100K in student loan debt because they got a vapid, non-STEM degree.

Because so many people are now taught to be followers, they unfortunately equate simply having a college degree to personal success and thus they don’t factor in the cost – and the ensuing debt.

But again, personal success is a broad concept, and it’s not just limited to simply having a college degree. Fortunately, more people are now equating success to vocational careers in which they avoid drowning under debt while make good money.

The conspiracy regarding college admissions has become a perfect example of the greed of the elite and could actually take down Deep State actors in the process.

China’s Huawei makes second attempt at Brazil smartphone market

SAO PAULO (Reuters) – China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is making a second attempt at cracking the Brazilian smartphone market, the fourth-largest in the world, with the launch of two high-end handsets this month, after its cheaper offerings failed to catch on earlier in the decade.

The move will take Huawei beyond its current role in Brazil as a supplier of cellular network equipment to challenge Samsung Electronics Co and Lenovo Group’s Motorola brand which dominate the local smartphone market.

“Brazil is a market with very significant opportunities for Huawei and we have a competitive portfolio to satisfy consumers’ expectations,” said Ketrina Dunagan, Huawei’s vice president of marketing for the Americas, in a statement emailed to Reuters.

Huawei’s plans for Brazil underscore the rise of Chinese companies expanding in Latin America’s technology and consumer sectors, moving beyond a traditional focus on commodities and infrastructure.

Brazil is a rare Latin American market where Huawei’s phones are still absent from store shelves. The company currently sells handsets in more than a dozen countries in the region, often with a double-digit market share.

Huawei, the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer, first launched a smartphone in Brazil in 2014, but the Ascend P7 handset met with weak demand and the project was discontinued.

Now, Huawei is planning to import two premium devices from the new P30 Series equipped with high-resolution cameras, the company said, withholding details ahead of the April 30 launch.

“The commercial strategy is completely different this time because the brand is still not well-known by Brazilians,” said a person familiar with the matter, requesting anonymity to speak openly about plans that have not been made public.

Whereas five years ago, Huawei set up as a supplier to mobile carriers, which sell just a tenth of new smartphones in Brazil, this time the company is looking to partner with retail chains that sell more than two-thirds of handsets, the source said.

More cutting-edge models should also help Huawei lure the attention of increasingly sophisticated buyers.

“The Brazilian market has reached a maturity level and manufacturers must bring novelties to convince consumers to replace their smartphones for new ones,” said Renato Meireles, a research analyst at IDC Brasil.

Smartphone sales in Brazil are expected to fall 4.3 percent this year, Meireles added, after a 6.8 percent drop in 2018.

“The first semester is still affected by economic and political turbulences, but sales should improve in the second semester with the arrival of new players”, he said.

DNA leads to arrest in cold case murders of two Alabama girls, reports say

A man was arrested Saturday in the cold case killings of two 17-year-old Alabama girls 20 years ago — one of Alabama’s highest-profile cold cases, according to reports.

Cops investigating the deaths of high school seniors Tracie Hawlett and J.B. Beasley in Ozark, Ala., got a break when DNA and a search of a public genealogy website linked Coley McCraney, 45, to the crime, local media reported.

Investigators found their bodies in the trunk of J.B.’s car on Aug. 1, 1999, a day after their families reported them missing. The girls were going to a birthday party for J.B. when they disappeared, the Dothan Eagle reported.

One of the girls was raped.

The search of the genealogy website was conducted using DNA from the crime scene, according to the paper.

The newspaper quoted Tracie’s mother as saying at a vigil on the tenth anniversary of the murders that she prayed every day law enforcement would come up with answers.

“Some days you go to work, get home and tears start. You go to sleep crying,” Carol Roberts said. “Through God’s grace and strength, we’ve come this far, and that’s what Tracie would want us to do.”

She said in 2007 that her daughter and J.B. wound up in Ozark after getting lost driving to the party, WDHN-TV reported.

“She said, ‘Mom, we’re on our way home,’” Roberts said, according to the station.

Online records show McCraney, a married Dothan, Ala., man with children, was booked into the Dale County Jail on five counts of capital murder and one count of rape.

BUDAPEST (Reuters) – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has written to conservative European leaders who initiated the expulsion of his Fidesz party from the European People’s Party group, apologizing for offensive language but maintaining his political positions.

According to a copy of a letter obtained by Reuters on Thursday, Orban asked the leader of the Flemish Christian Democrats, Wouter Beke, to reconsider his proposal to eject Fidesz. A government spokesman said similar letters were sent to all 13 parties that joined in the proposal.

Charles Payne: Democrats are ‘afraid’ of their ‘de facto leader’ Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is making major waves in the party, and her fellow lawmakers are afraid of her, according to Fox Business host Charles Payne.

In response to President Trump's comments about the Democrat from New York and her proposed climate change reform, the Green New Deal, Payne said Ocasio-Cortez has "thrown her weight around" in Congress and terrified those around her.

"We just saw a vote where the Democrats ran away from it [the Green New Deal] when they had the opportunity to, but as soon as the Green New Deal came out, all of the major presidential candidates jumped on board, and in fact, many of them are doubling down," Payne said on "America's Newsroom" on Wednesday.

CHARLES PAYNE CALLS OCASIO-CORTEZ'S DEFENSE OF GREEN NEW DEAL 'DISINGENUOUS'

President Trump has consistently taken aim at Ocasio-Cortez and the Green New Deal, most recently during a speech at the National Republican Congressional Committee's spring dinner on Tuesday. While addressing attendees, he encouraged them not to vote down the Green New Deal just yet because he wants to run against it in 2020.

"If they beat me with the Green New Deal, I deserve to lose," President Trump said. A vote on the Green New Deal was set last week by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in a bid to divide Democratic senators on the issue, and the majority of lawmakers voted not to begin debate on the non-binding resolution.

In response, Payne labeled the Democrats behavior towards the plan as "absurd," and said that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is "running the show over there, bottom line."

"Alexandria Ocasio Cortez has thrown her weight around on a number of things, and she's dramatically changed the Democratic party, and she has become the de facto leader without a doubt," he continued.

ZURICH (Reuters) – Shareholders approved Credit Suisse’s 2018 compensation report with an 82 percent majority on Friday, overriding frustrations expressed at its annual general meeting over jumps in executive pay during a year its share price plummeted.

Three shareholder advisers had recommended investors vote against Switzerland’s second-biggest bank’s remuneration report, while a fourth backed the report but expressed reservations about whether management pay matched performance.

The approval marked a slight increase over the 80.8 percent support garnered for the bank’s 2017 compensation report.

LONDON (Reuters) – Activist investor Edward Bramson is likely to fail in his attempt to get a board seat at Barclays’ annual meeting next week, even though shareholders are dissatisfied with performance of the group’s investment bank.

New York-based Bramson’s Sherborne Investors and the board of the British bank have been sparring for months over Barclays’ strategy.

Bramson wants to scale back Barclays’ investment bank to reduce risk and boost shareholder returns. Barclays Chief Executive Jes Staley remains staunchly committed to growing the business out of trouble.

After failing to persuade Staley to change course since he began building a 5.5 percent stake in the bank in March last year, Bramson hopes a board seat will rachet up the pressure.

Both sides have written to shareholders pitching their case and Bramson has courted investors in one-on-one meetings, although none have publicly backed him yet.

Interviews by Reuters with five institutional investors in Barclays suggest Bramson has failed to persuade them.

Sherborne declined to comment.

Mirza Baig, head of investment stewardship at top-40 shareholder Aviva Investors, said Bramson was welcome on the bank’s register but the boardroom was a step too far.

“He has created a lot of value at other businesses, but, generally, when he has come in as executive chair and taken full control. This would be a different case where he would just be one lone voice on the board,” he said.

A second Barclays shareholder said he backed Bramson’s goal of improving returns but via an “evolutionary” approach.

“If you look at banks that have tried to restructure their operations in investment banking – you look at Natwest Markets, Deutsche Bank – I struggle to think of an example where a roughshod restructuring has been accretive to shareholder value.”

A third, top-30 investor said he had been impressed by incoming Chairman Nigel Higgins’ grasp of the challenge in hand, and felt investors would give him time.

“Management know they have to execute and deliver improved returns… [Higgins] will continue to re-shape the board but obviously he didn’t feel that having someone with a diametrically opposed view on it would be helpful.”

A fourth, top-30 investor agreed: “We voted for the chairman to come in and it would be crazy to allow an activist to join the board (at this time).”

Jupiter Fund Management, the 24th largest investor, said it also planned to vote against Bramson.

Barclays has nearly 500 institutional shareholders, Refinitiv data showed.

Since Staley joined Barclays in 2015, the investment bank returns relative to capital invested have increased but are still underperforming the overall business.

Barclays’ first-quarter figures showed the investment bank posted a 6 percent drop in income from its markets business and a 17 percent fall in banking advisory fees.

Returns in the investment bank fell to 9.5 percent from 13.2 percent a year ago.

Famed for successful campaigns against smaller British companies in sectors from chemicals to advertising, Bramson’s board seat pitch has been rebuffed by shareholder advisory firms.

Institutional Shareholder Services, the world’s biggest, said Bramson’s proposal “falls short of what can reasonably be expected from a shareholder trying to address issues at a 28 billion pounds, systemically important bank”.

Glass Lewis also flagged concern about Bramson’s lack of banking experience and “questionable” shareholding structure, referring to Sherborne’s use of derivative contracts to hedge losses should its strategy fail.

Critics said the arrangement meant his interests are not truly aligned with those of other long-term shareholders.

British advisory firm Pirc, however, said it recommended that investors abstain in the vote on Bramson’s proposal as a challenge to the board to do better in the year ahead – or face a similar contest in 2020.

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.
