In summer movie season, superheroes and a king may set movie records for Disney

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The final chapter in a decade-long superhero saga and the remake of a big-screen classic could topple box-office records during a summer movie season expected to be dominated by Walt Disney Co.

“Avengers: Endgame” from Disney’s Marvel Studios kicks off Hollywood’s parade of potential blockbusters on Wednesday, and it is expected to start with a bang. Industry experts say “Endgame” will likely deliver the biggest opening weekend ever in the United States and Canada.

Then in July, a new version of Disney hit “The Lion King” has a shot at dethroning “Avatar” as the highest-grossing film in Hollywood history, according to box office analysts.

Those movies and others are giving theater owners hope for a turnaround after a sluggish start to 2019. Ticket sales so far are running 16 percent below last year’s bonanza, data from measurement company Comscore showed.

Studios used to reserve their big-budget films for summer, making it Hollywood’s most lucrative season, but now spread them throughout the year.

“I counted over 30 huge movies coming out this year,” said Adam Aron, chief executive of AMC Entertainment, the world’s largest theater operator. Aron said he now considers summer film season to be “March 1 to December 31.”

Possible heavy hitters include “Detective Pikachu” and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” from AT&T Inc’s Warner Bros, “The Secret Life of Pets 2” from Comcast Corp’s Universal Pictures, and Sony Corp’s “Spider-Man: Far from Home.”

STRONGEST FILM SLATE

But Disney’s lineup is seen as the most formidable. The company’s other 2019 releases include “Toy Story 4,” a remake of “Aladdin,” “Frozen 2” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

“Disney has probably the strongest film slate in the history of the industry this year,” Cowen & Co analyst Doug Creutz said.

The new “Lion King” tells the well-known story of the plucky cub Simba through computer-generated imagery designed to look like live action. A trailer released at Thanksgiving generated 224.6 million views within 24 hours, a Disney record.

Even so, it will not be easy for the king of the jungle to reach the top of the box office mountain. “Avatar” grossed $2.8 billion after its 2009 release and is one of only four movies ever to cross $2 billion.

“Lion King” boosters noted the original film hauled in $968.5 million way back in 1994, with lower ticket prices. This time, it will play in a booming Chinese movie market that has grown to the world’s second-largest, positioning it to take in far more than the original’s $5 million in the country.

Plus, the story of Simba’s challenges and triumphs has wide appeal.

“That is a movie that will travel very, very well,” said Vue International cinemas CEO Tim Richards. “It has common themes that hit a chord with all of our audiences internationally. It’s for all ages.”

‘ENDGAME’ IS CULMINATION

“Endgame,” the culmination of 22 Marvel films since 2007, also has generated huge buzz. Website Fandango said “Endgame” sold five times as many tickets as last year’s “Avengers: Infinity War” over its first seven days of advance sales. Theaters were adding show times to meet demand.

“Infinity War” in 2018 holds the current opening weekend record, generating $257.7 million domestically over its first three days. The movie ended with an epic cliffhanger that will lure fans back to theaters in droves for “Endgame,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

He predicts between $250 million and $275 million for “Endgame,” which will wrap up the story started by Iron Man, Thor and four other Avengers.

“I don’t see how anticipation could be any higher,” Dergarabedian said. “Audiences have developed an ongoing relationship with these characters and these stories. It’s a must-see movie.”

Prince Charles visit shines spotlight on Cuba’s classic British cars

HAVANA (Reuters) – Cuba’s rolling museum of vintage U.S. cars may be world-renowned, but it was the island’s collection of British vehicles, from Jaguars to MGs, that were on display on Tuesday for Prince Charles and his wife Camilla during their historic trip to Havana.

On his second full day in Cuba, the heir to the UK throne drove a black 1953 MG TD to a rally of British cars at a park known as the island’s most British corner, with its statue of John Lennon and Yellow Submarine bar.

While local musicians played covers of songs by British bands like the Beatles and Queen, the Prince of Wales spoke with owners of the cars, which like their U.S. counterparts, predate Communist-run Cuba’s 1959 revolution.

The royals’ three-day visit comes as Britain seeks to strengthen relations with Cuba as part of the island’s broader normalization of relations with the West, although the Trump administration has rowed back on the U.S.-Cuban detente.

On Monday evening, they met at the presidential Palace of the Revolution with the Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, who said their visit was an honor for Cuba that underscored the good state of bilateral relations.

“This visit is a real boost to the club, which has only met up a few times so far,” said Lupe Fuentes, 66, who co-founded the group last year after realizing there was a wealth of British cars on the Caribbean’s largest island.

Many of the around 50 members are Cubans who inherited the cars from their parents and grandparents and for whom they are now prized family possessions in a country where cars are expensive and hard to come by.

“He asked us how old the car was and how we managed to preserve them,” said Fuentes, adding that the club served to pool knowledge and resources for restoring the cars.

“British cars are harder to maintain than the U.S. ones because there is a constant inflow of U.S. parts but many of the British ones are no longer even made,” said Fuentes’ partner Ricardo Medell, 63. “We end up inventing a lot.”

He said Cubans often replaced the original parts with alternative or homemade parts. His car, a red and white Austin Healy from 1959, was now probably 90 percent “fabricated,” he said.

The club posted ad on Cuban state-run TV and radio in order to find other owners of British cars, and stopped some they spotted on the street to invite them to join.

That’s how they convinced Fernando Gonzalez, 30, who runs a silver Jaguar from 1958 as a taxi, to join.

“The prince asked me how difficult it was to maintain and I said the most difficult thing was the steering system because of all the potholes,” said Gonzalez.

“I expected him to be more reserved but he was very chatty.”

Charles and Camilla, who tacked the Cuba stop onto a two-week Caribbean tour of former and current British territories, also stopped to talk with members of a club of British motorbike owners and UK expats living in Havana, who were waving flags.

They also talked to enthusiastic local residents who eschewed royal protocol to display Cuban warmth, with one woman hugging Charles enthusiastically.

On heels of ‘Unplanned,’ Dem-majority MI county evicts Planned Parenthood after locals storm board meeting

It could be a coincidence, but probably not.

Hundreds of folks flooded a Michigan county board meeting Tuesday to demand officials shutter a Planned Parenthood facility in the wake of the eye-opening documentary Unplanned, which is currently playing in several local theaters.

The line to speak at the meeting streamed out of the building and down the sidewalk, and it appeared most who attended were against renewing a lease with Planned Parenthood at a county building in downtown Muskegon. Several toted signs that read “Evict Planned Parenthood” and “Women for Reclaiming our Health Department” as commissioners listened to more than four hours of public comments, Fox 17 reports.

Muskegon County Public Health Director Kathy Moore told commissioners the health department desperately needs the space. County officials also cited Planned Parenthood’s low rent and pro-abortion politics.

“We just absolutely need the space,” Moore said. “We have nurses that have complained of unsanitary conditions for them, confidentiality issues, safety issues as well as compliance issues.”

Ultimately, the board of commissioners voted 6-2 to end the county’s lease with Planned Parenthood, which paid only $1,500 a year in rent. The majority of the board are Democrats.

New research indicates that organ donors are still conscious even when having their organs removed for donation. Mike Adams hosts and exposes the organ harvesting industry.

Planned Parenthood now has 90 days to move out, which made Zach Lahring, a Republican elected in 2018 on a campaign to oust Planned Parenthood, “very pleased,” Mlive.com reports.

“The public showed up and spoke and the commissioners voted after listening to people,” he said, adding that local health officials hope to improve on Planned Parenthood’s less than stellar work in the community.

“They’ve left Muskegon County with the third highest STD rates in the state,” Lahring said. “The county will take over that process and Planned Parenthood will move out and perform whatever services they want elsewhere.”

Residents roared with approval after commissioners cast their votes to evict Planned Parenthood, which does not perform abortion services at the Muskegon location. The facility provides referrals, birth control, pregnancy testing, emergency contraceptives, HIV and STD testing, as well as “general women’s, men’s and LGBTQ healthcare services,” Mlive reports.

Regardless, Planned Parenthood’s strong ties to the abortion industry was enough to motivate many in Muskegon to attend the board meeting, where many carried pictures of ultrasounds, and cited abortion statistics and Bible verses to illustrate their opposition.

“I keep hearing about discrimination, and I keep hearing about access to healthcare, but those individuals who were aborted did not get that,” one commenter told the board, according to Fox 17.

Jim Norton, vice president of development for Planned Parenthood of Michigan, attended the meeting and complained about politics playing into the decision to show his organization the door.

“There is no question it was political. I mean, let’s look at the facts. I mean, we got a council member that ran on a platform that he wanted to close Planned Parenthood. Period, full stop. That’s what he ran on,” Norton said. “Now we’re going to ask if this is political?”

“Clearly it’s not about the facts it’s about the politics of it,” he said.

Norton may not be wrong.

The wildly popular pro-life film “Unplanned” is currently showing in most of the area’s popular cinemas. The movie details the real-life story of Abby Johnson, the youngest clinic director in the history of Planned Parenthood until a life-changing experience turned her into a fierce anti-abortion advocate.

The movie faced discrimination with an ‘R’ rating and problems advertising on social media in the lead-up to it’s debut, which has only helped to fuel interest in the film and momentum to end public funding for an organization that’s responsible for an estimated 60 million abortions since 1973.

The need for the government to distance itself from Planned Parenthood was a re-emerging theme discussed Muskegon, where many take offense to the “controversial” and partisan private organization.

“I don’t see why this meeting is even necessary,” Rev. Bill Randall told Mlive. “You have the responsibility for the use of our building and our tax dollars. I’m opposed to Planned Parenthood using county property and confusing people that this agency is somehow connected with our county health department.”

The health director, Kathy Moore, said the county will continue to offer its own family planning services, and will use the space currently occupied by Planned Parenthood to create more private rooms and larger workstations for nurses to expand STD and HIV services.

Norton said Planned Parenthood has no plans to open in a different location.

Hogan Gidley on Nadler’s push for unredacted Mueller report: ‘This is just more political grandstanding’

Deputy White House Press Secretary Hogan Gidley said Friday House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler’s push for Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s “complete and unredacted” Russia report is “just more political grandstanding.”

Gidley made the comments on “America’s Newsroom” when he was asked if the White House has a problem giving Nadler the full, unredacted report.

Nadler, D-N.Y., issued a subpoena Friday to obtain the "complete and unredacted" version of Mueller's report, as well as the underlying materials.

“I’m shocked,” Gidley said sarcastically.

HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE ISSUES SUBPOENA FOR 'COMPLETE AND UNREDACTED' MUELLER REPORT

He added, “Jerry Nadler is irrelevant in the situation. The American people now know that regardless of what the Democrats were saying about the president, lies they were telling with zero evidence and zero proof, now he wants to go deeper. When does this ever stop? I mean, if we gave him the unredacted report, if we gave him all the tax returns unredacted as well, he would still want something else.”

Gidley was then asked again if he would have a problem releasing the full report.

“We are not going to deal with Jerry Nadler in that matter. We have already cooperated so much with the House Democrats and we’ll continue to do so,” Gidley said in response. “But the fact is, this is just more political grandstanding by someone who has nothing to run on, nothing to talk about, other than trying to attack a man who has now been proven completely innocent of any crime.”

After two years of suspense, Mueller’s report was released into Washington’s partisan scrum Thursday showing investigators did not find evidence of collusion between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia – as Attorney General Bill Barr declared last month – but also revealing an array of controversial actions by the president that were examined as part of the investigation’s obstruction inquiry.

Mueller ultimately did not reach a conclusion on whether the president's conduct amounted to obstruction, stating: "[W]hile this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him."

On Friday, Gidley also reacted to Rep. Adam Schiff’s, D-Calif., recent claim that "significant evidence of collusion" existed.

BIDEN EXPECTED TO DECLARE 2020 BID ON WEDNESDAY: SOURCES

“Yesterday he was on another network and they asked him about moving to impeach the president and he sided with Nancy Pelosi. She said it wouldn't be worthwhile, quote unquote, to do that, but he said the reason we won’t is because we need overwhelming and demonstrable evidence against this president. Wait a minute. You've been on network television telling everyone you had this evidence,” said Gidley.

“Just like the special counsel, it's time to put up or shut up. If you have the evidence, show it. The problem is, he doesn't, he knows it. He's been lying to the American people. He's been lying to all of us, accusing this president of treason for two and a half years.”

When asked if he welcomes Joe Biden into the 2020 race, Gidley answered, “Absolutely.”

He added, “The president is going to beat anyone and everyone who comes into this race.”

Joe Biden is expected to declare his candidacy for president next week, two sources with knowledge of the former vice president’s plans confirmed to Fox News on Friday.

Coach: Man accused of killing University of South Carolina student is ‘not the Nate everyone knows and loves’

A coach who knew the man suspected of kidnapping and killing University of South Carolina student Samantha Josephson said he was shocked to hear the reports.

Justin Waiters coached suspect Nathaniel David Rowland when he played Amateur Athletic Union basketball as a senior at East Clarendon High School.

"This doesn’t sound like the person we know and love," Waiters told the Greenville News.

Waiters said the last time he saw Rowland was around a year ago and called him a “great kid” who is part of a “very involved family.” He described Rowland as polite and hardworking. Waiters said his work ethic led him to pick Rowland for the role of captain of the basketball team.

MURDERED UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA STUDENT'S CAUSE OF DEATH REVEALED

"When his father spoke and said that’s not the son he raised, I have to second that," Waiters said of Rowland. "That is not the Nate everyone knows and loves."

Rowland’s cousin, Dominique Rhodes, echoed Waiters comments saying she was surprised to hear he was arrested.

"I just wish they could really get to the bottom of the investigation," Rhodes said.

Police said 21-year-old Josephson was kidnapped and killed early Friday after she got into a car that she mistakenly believed was an Uber. The child safety locks were activated in the car and Josephson couldn't escape, officials said.

Rowland has been charged with Josephson’s kidnapping and murder. Josephson’s body was found Friday afternoon in Clarendon County, about 65 miles from the state's capital of Columbia.

SOUTH CAROLINA MAN CHARGED WITH KIDNAPPING, MURDER OF COLLEGE STUDENT ACTIVATED CHILD LOCKS IN CAR, POLICE SAY

Josephson’s family said she planned to attend law school at Drexel University in Philadelphia after graduation in May. Her boyfriend, Greg Corbishley, said at a vigil on Tuesday night that the college student “was the love of my life," ABC News reported.

"I see why she loved all you guys so much," Corbishley said. "I saw myself 10 years from now coming back to this place with her."

COLOMBO (Reuters) – Sri Lanka’s former wartime defense chief, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, said on Friday he would run for president in elections this year and would stop the spread of Islamist extremism by rebuilding the intelligence service and surveilling citizens.

Gotabaya, as he is popularly known, is the younger brother of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the two led the country to a crushing defeat of separatist Tamil rebels a decade ago after a 26-year civil war.

More than 250 people were killed in bomb attacks on hotels and churches on Easter Sunday that the government has blamed on Islamist militants and that Islamic State has claimed responsibility for.

Gotabaya said the attacks could have been prevented if the island’s current government had not dismantled the intelligence network and extensive surveillance capabilities that he built up during the war and later on.

“Because the government was not prepared, that’s why you see a panic situation,” he said in an interview with Reuters.

Gotabaya said he would be a candidate “100 percent”, firming up months of speculation that he plans to run in the elections, which are due by December.

He was critical of the government’s response to the bombings. Since the attacks, the government has struggled to provide clear information about how they were staged, who was behind them and how serious the threat is from Islamic State to the country.

“Various people are blaming various people, not giving exactly the details as to what happened, even people expect the names, what organization did this, and how they came up to this level, that explanation was not given,” he said.

On Friday, President Maithripala Sirisena said the government led by premier Ranil Wickremesinghe should take responsibility for the attacks and that prior information warning of attacks was not shared with him.

Wickremesinghe said earlier he was not advised about warnings that came from India’s spy service either, presenting a picture of a government still in disarray since the two leaders fell out last October.

Gotabaya is facing lawsuits in the United States, where he is a dual citizen, over his role in the war and afterwards.

The South Africa-based International Truth and Justice Project, in partnership with U.S. law firm Hausfeld, filed a civil case in California this month against Gotabaya on behalf of a Tamil torture survivor.

In a separate case, Ahimsa Wickrematunga, the daughter of murdered investigative editor Lasantha Wickrematunga, filed a complaint for damages in the same U.S. District Court in California for allegedly instigating and authorizing the extrajudicial killing of her father.

Gotabaya said the cases were baseless and only a “little distraction” as he prepared for the election campaign. He said he had asked U.S. authorities to renounce his citizenship and that process was nearly done, clearing the way for his candidature.

‘DISMANTLE THE NETWORKS’

He said that if he won, his immediate focus would to be tackle the threat from radical Islam and to rebuild the security set-up.

“It’s a serious problem, you have to go deep into the groups, dismantle the networks,” he said, adding he would give the military a mandate to collect intelligence from the ground and to mount surveillance of groups turning to extremism.

Gotabaya said that a military intelligence cell he had set up in 2011 of 5,000 people, some of them with Arabic language skills and that was tracking the bent towards extremist ideology some of the Islamist groups were taking in eastern Sri Lanka was disbanded by the current government.

“They did not give priority to national security, there was a mix-up. They were talking about ethnic reconciliation, then they were talking about human rights issues, they were talking about individual freedoms,” he said.

President Sirisena’s government sought to forge reconciliation with minority Tamils and close the wounds of the war and launched investigations into allegations of rights abuse and torture against military officers.

Officials said many of these secret intelligence cells were disbanded because they faced allegations of abuse, including torture and extra judicial killings.

Muslims make up nearly 10 percent of Sri Lanka’s population of 22 million, which is predominantly Buddhist.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Federal Reserve may lower the interest it pays on excess reserves banks leave with it by 5 basis points at its April 30-May 1 policy meeting in a bid to prevent the federal funds rate from drifting higher, Morgan Stanley analysts said on Friday.

This would mark the third such “technical” adjustment on the interest on excess reserves (IOER) following cuts last June and December.

In response to the news that the U.S. economy rose 3.2 percent in the first quarter of 2019, White House National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow said that this “prosperity cycle” will continue if President Trump‘s policies stay in place.

Calling the advance in gross domestic product a “blow-out number,” Kudlow told “America’s Newsroom” Friday that it serves as concrete proof Trump’s measures to grow the economy have been successful.

“I’ll just say, Trump’s policies to rebuild the economy, lower taxes, regulations, opening energy, trade reform. Look, this stuff is working,” he said.

“It tells me, among other things, that the prosperity cycle we have entered into is continuing, it is strong. It has legs and momentum and frankly it is going to go on for quite some time,” he continued. “This is the new Trump economy. Some people don’t like that or they don’t agree with that. I respect the differences but I’ll tell you it’s working.”

STUART VARNEY: THANKS TO TRUMP, AMERICANS ARE FEELING BETTER ABOUT THEIR FINANCES

39 MILLION ADULTS CANNOT AFFORD A SUMMER VACATION

Kudlow added that Trump has “ended the war” on business and success, and is rallying for the small business owners of America.

“The president is rebuilding incentives, he is rebuilding confidence, he the rebuilding optimism,” he said. “He is basically saying you should keep more of what you earn. He is basically saying to small businesses we’ll cut the paperwork back and make it easier for you to start a business and prosper.”

Kudlow said the Trump administration is also working with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders to implement bipartisan deals to ensure the continuation of the GDP’s success.

“If the policies and the principles remain in place — and I believe they will — then I believe this new prosperity expansion cycle is going to go on for a whole bunch of more years,” he said.

(Reuters) – World number one Naomi Osaka came from behind in the final set to beat Croatian Donna Vekic 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) on Friday and move into the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix semi-finals.

Osaka comfortably won the opening set but was tested by the Croatian, who pushed her to the limit in the second and third. The Japanese made 45 unforced errors as she struggles to get to grips with swapping hard courts for clay.

Osaka was visibly frustrated and trailed 5-1 in the final set but she refused to give up and found her rhythm to break Vekic twice and prevent her from serving for the match.

In the tiebreaker, a confident Osaka upped her baseline game and had two early mini breaks before wrapping up the match in two hours and 18 minutes. An infuriated Vekic even smashed her racket after losing the match.

“I told myself I didn’t want to have any regrets here,” Osaka said. “I was stressed out when I went down 1-5… but this (comeback) was pretty good because I don’t play really well on clay.”

Earlier, world number three Petra Kvitova came back from a set down to beat Anastasija Sevastova 2-6 6-2 6-3 and move into the tournament’s semi-finals for the third time in her career.

Sevastova had a dream start, breaking Kvitova twice to take a 3-0 lead as the Czech struggled with her first serve. Kvitova also made a slew of unforced errors, with many of her returns going long.

Sevastova used the full width of the court to get the better of Kvitova, who played on the back foot for much of the first set as the Latvian gave her little time to catch her breath.

However, Kvitova recovered in the second set and she broke Sevastova’s serve when she was 3-2 up, winning 10 straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Sevastova looked shaken and was broken again to give Kvitova the second set.

Kvitova took command in the final set and broke a visibly upset Sevastova to take a 3-1 lead before easing into the semis.

“In the first set I missed almost everything. I was pretty slow and she just couldn’t miss,” Kvitova said. “In the second set it was very important for me to stay on my serve and the chance to break her came.”

Kiki Bertens plays Angelique Kerber later on Friday and Victoria Azarenka faces Anett Kontaveit in the last quarter-final.

President Donald Trump says he feels “young” and “vibrant” at age 72 and thinks he can beat 76-year-old Joe Biden “easily.”

A reporter asked Trump at the White House on Friday how old is too old to be president of the United States.

Trump said: “I just feel like a young man. I’m so young. I can’t believe it. … I’m a young vibrant man.”

Then he smiled and said he’s not sure about Democratic presidential contender Biden, the second-oldest contender in the race behind Bernie Sanders.

Trump said: “I look at Joe. I don’t know about him.”

Biden, in an interview on ABC’s “The View,” joked in response that if Trump “looks young and vibrant compared to me, I should probably go home.”
