Researchers find hammerhead 'nursery' off Galapagos Island

Researchers in Ecuador say they have discovered a "nursery" of hammerhead sharks off the coast of the Galapagos Islands, a find that may help them track and protect the endangered predators.

The head of the project, Eduardo Espinosa, said the group had found 20 hammerheads in the area along Santa Cruz island, and was able to attach monitors to five of them.

"That site, where the babies spent two or three years, is important not only for the Galapagos but on a world scale because it gives hope for the protection and conservation of a species," he said.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature lists hammerhead sharks as endangered species that have suffered sharply declining numbers in recent years around the world. They are vulnerable partly because they breed relatively few times, their schools are sometimes caught in fishing nets and their fins are prized in Asian markets.

Marine biologist Alex Hearn of San Francisco University in Quito said researchers had believed that the hammerheads gave birth along continental coasts, so the discovery of the island nursery opens new lines of study.

The hammerheads are an attraction for divers visiting the Galapagos, about 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) west of the mainland, and an image of a hammerhead is part of the Galapagos National Park's emblem.

India inflation seen inching up in March, but still below RBI target: Reuters poll

By Anisha Sheth

BENGALURU (Reuters) – India’s retail inflation is expected to have accelerated in March on slightly higher food prices but remain under the Reserve Bank of India’s medium-term target of 4 percent, a Reuters poll predicted.

If the forecast is realized, March will be the eighth month in a row with below-target inflation, giving the RBI room to squeeze in another rate cut this year.

According to the median consensus of over 40 economists polled by Reuters between April 4-8, consumer prices rose at an annual rate of 2.80 percent in March, up from 2.57 percent in February.

Forecasts ranged between 2.43 percent and 3.10 percent.

“Headline CPI inflation will have remained low in March, even if, as we suspect, it rose slightly as food inflation continues to pick up. In particular, the sharp fall in vegetable inflation over recent months appears to have bottomed out,” said Shilan Shah, senior India economist at Capital Economics.

Food prices, which constitute nearly half of India’s CPI basket, declined 0.66 percent on-year in February compared with a drop of 2.24 percent in January.

Oil – India’s biggest import item – has risen over 30 percent this year and is currently trading at around $70 per barrel.

“Transport and utilities – which are clearly being driven by the rise in oil prices – are (also) driving headline inflation higher on a year-on-year basis,” said Prakash Sakpal, Asia economist at ING.

At its April 4 monetary policy meeting, the RBI lowered borrowing costs for the second consecutive time to spur growth, bringing the repo rate to 6.0 percent.

The rapid policy easings come just weeks before voting begins in a national election, the results of which will be announced in May.

“The growth argument is not strong for easing policy just yet. Growth is slowing indeed, but it is not just India, it is slowing everywhere. (But) India still has very strong domestic demand,” said ING’s Sakpal.

According to a Reuters poll last week, economic growth is forecast to average 7.2 percent over the coming year.

But while inflation is predicted to rise to the RBI’s target this year, just under half of economists polled by Reuters last week predicted another rate cut.

“The RBI will almost certainly follow up its cumulative 50bp of rate cuts this year with further loosening, perhaps as soon as June,” said Shah at Capital Economics.

“But with core inflation still elevated, we think that further policy loosening will prove to be a policy mistake.”

Steve Yzerman is coming home to become general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, according to TSN’s Gord Miller.

“The Red Wings will introduce Steve Yzerman as their new GM this afternoon, Ken Holland to remain as Sr Vice President,” Miller tweeted on Friday morning.

The Red Wings also announced that Yzerman and Holland would be part of a press conference at 3 p.m. ET.

Yzerman, who played in Detroit for his entire 22-year career, stepped down from his role as the Tampa Bay Lightning GM just before the season.

Yzerman, 53, had been general manager of the Lightning since 2010. His family still lived in Detroit during that stint.

He was named the league’s General Manager of the Year for the 2014-15 season. During his tenure, the Lightning have won a conference title and a division title and made the playoffs five times.

Yzerman was a Hall of Fame center and longtime captain during his playing days with the Detroit Red Wings from 1983-2006.

Budget carrier FlyDubai ends 2018 with $43.5M loss

FlyDubai says revenues rose to $1.7 billion in 2018, but the company ended the year with a loss of $43.5 million.

In a statement Wednesday, Dubai's government-owned budget carrier blamed fuel costs, rising interest rates and "unfavorable currency exchange movements" for the loss. It had made $1.5 billion in revenue in 2017, earning a narrow profit of $10 million that year.

FlyDubai said it flew 11 million passengers last year, just slightly up from the 10.9 million it flew in 2017.

The low-cost carrier has operations out of both of Dubai's airports, including Dubai International Airport, which is ranked the world's busiest for international travel. FlyDubai also has code-share flights with Dubai's flagship long-haul carrier Emirates.

Hollywood celebrates the finale of the ‘Avengers’ movies

By Lisa Richwine

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Marvel’s star-studded Avengers superhero team descended on Los Angeles on Monday at a lavish premiere to celebrate the final chapter in a 22-movie saga that ranks as the movie industry’s highest-grossing franchise of all time.

Hundreds of industry VIPs, cast members, fans and media watched the first showing of “Avengers: Endgame,” the three-hour action spectacle that has been held tightly under wraps.

The movie begins rolling out in theaters around the world on Wednesday.

Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Chris Evans (Captain America), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) and others walked a purple carpet underneath a giant, spinning Avengers logo set up inside the Los Angeles Convention Center.

“I’m excited that I’m finally going to get to see the movie,” said Paul Rudd, who plays Ant-Man and, like other cast members, had not seen the finished film due to Marvel’s secrecy around the project.

Rudd said he had been traveling the world to promote the movie and “trying to talk about it the best we can, and to do all of that without having seen the film is a strange experience. So now, to finally see the movie is great.”

Other A-list stars packed the premiere, including Chris Hemsworth’s brother Liam and his wife Miley Cyrus.

“Endgame” concludes the story of the six original Avengers in Marvel’s cinematic universe – Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Hulk and Thor.

It picks up after last year’s “Avengers: Infinity War” left fans hanging when many of the Marvel heroes seemed to turn to dust at the hand of the villain Thanos, played by Josh Brolin. In “Endgame,” the surviving superheroes plot to kill Thanos and try to undo his damage.

After the screening, the film’s stars gathered on stage and hugged. Evans said he “cried like six times” while watching the film. “I cried more than six times, Chris,” Hemsworth said.

Mark Ruffalo, who plays the Hulk, said working on the films had been “the trip of a lifetime.”

The 21 previous movies from the Walt Disney Co-owned Marvel studio are the highest-grossing franchise in film history, generating more than $18.6 billion at global box offices since 2007.

“Endgame” may set an opening weekend record in the domestic market, according to box office analysts. “Infinity War” holds the current record of $257.7 million over its first three days in the United States and Canada.

While the film wraps up the “Avengers” story, some characters will live on in future movies. Spider-Man, for example, returns to the big screen in July in “Spider-Man: Far from Home.”

A “Black Panther” sequel is also in the works.

A California man who allegedly fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight last month before fleeing the country has been returned to the U.S. following his arrest in Mexico on Wednesday, authorities said.

Julio Cesar Rocha, 25, of Montlcair, is accused of shooting his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend Thalia Flores and a second unidentified male victim March 21 around 2:45 p.m. while the two were sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of a discount store in Chino. Both communities are about 36 miles east of Los Angeles.

Flores died at the scene. The man, whose name was not released, walked to a nearby hospital where he’s recovering from his gunshot wounds.

Rocha allegedly fled the scene and remained at large for more than a month, the Daily Bulletin reported. He was formally arrested at 4:30 p.m. after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport from Mexico, KTLA-TV reported.

The suspect was booked at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on murder and attempted murder charges, the City of Chino Police Department said on Facebook.

Flores ended her seven-year relationship with Rocha just two months before her death and still lived in fear of him until that point, a sister of the victim, Bernice Flores, told the Daily Bulletin.

“He said himself so many times to other people, ‘If I can’t have her, no one will.’ ” Flores said, adding that her sister stayed in the relationship longer that she would have liked in fear that Rocha would hurt her or her family if they broke up.

Rocha was convicted on misdemeanor battery in 2016 and sentenced to 60 days in prison. He was originally charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, but the charges were lowered in a plea deal, the Daily Bulletin reported.

Rocha was convicted of misdemeanor resisting or obstructing a peace officer in 2014. A second charge of misdemeanor battery was dropped in a plea deal, and Rocha was ordered to complete a 26-week anger management course, according to San Bernardino County Superior Court records. Rocha was later arrested and sentenced to 10 days behind bars for failing to complete the course.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”
