April 4, 2019

Coach Kelvin Sampson has reached an agreement on a long-term contract extension at Houston, the school announced Thursday.

The deal runs through the 2024-25 season. Financial terms were not made public, but school officials previously said they had offered the 63-year-old coach a six-year, $18 million extension.

That deal would make Sampson one of the top 25 highest-paid coaches in the nation.

Sampson guided the Cougars (33-4) to the American Athletic Conference regular-season title and their first Sweet 16 appearance since 1984.

Sampson, who has been at Houston since 2014, reached a restructured deal in 2016 that bumped his annual salary to $1.4 million.

He has a 116-52 record with the Cougars and is 541-279 for his career, which includes previous stints at Washington State (1987-94), Oklahoma (1994-2006) and Indiana (2006-08).

He had been among the list of candidates for the coaching opening at Arkansas.

Clashes break out in Yemen's key port city after cease-fire

Yemeni security officials and eyewitnesses say that fighting has erupted in the key port city of Hodeida, the first significant clashes since warring sides agreed to a U.N.-brokered cease-fire deal in December.

They say the combat began overnight into Sunday, leaving fires burning on the main front lines in the city's east and south, while exchanges of artillery fire shook the beleaguered city.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren't authorized to brief journalists, while witnesses did so for fear of their safety.

The fighting comes days after the internationally recognized Yemeni government, along with allies Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, accused the Houthi rebel foes of breaking the cease-fire and refusing to withdraw their forces from the city in line with the December agreement.

Trump says ‘young bartender’ AOC has Dems ‘shaking’: ‘They’re petrified of her’

President Donald Trump mocked freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., on Tuesday over her signature Green New Deal, referring to the progressive proposal to combat climate change as being “done by a young bartender.”

Trump didn’t explicitly name Ocasio-Cortez in his address at the National Republican Congressional Committee dinner in Washington, though he cautioned lawmakers against being too quick to defeat the plan, in hopes of campaigning against it in his 2020 re-election bid, the Hill reported.

OCASIO-CORTEZ: WE REACTED TO 9/11, SO WHERE'S THE REACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE?

"The Green New Deal, done by a young bartender, 29 years old," Trump told the crowd of House GOP lawmakers. "A young bartender, wonderful young woman.”

Trump then blasted the Green New Deal as “the craziest thing,” and chided establishment Democrats as “petrified” of Ocasio-Cortez and her progressive ideas, the Hill reported.

WHAT IS THE GREEN NEW DEAL? A LOOK AT THE ECONOMIC AND CLIMATE CONCEPT PUSHED BY PROGRESSIVES

"The Green New Deal. The first time I heard it, I said, 'That’s the craziest thing.' You have senators that are professionals, that you guys know, that have been there for a long time ... and they’re standing behind her shaking. They’re petrified of her," Trump said.

The Green New Deal calls for a massive overhaul of the nation’s economy and energy use, with an estimated cost that could reach well into the tens of trillions of dollars. The legislation failed to pass a test vote last week in the Senate.

Ocasio-Cortez worked as a bartender and political organizer in New York City before unseating 10-term incumbent U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley in a Democratic primary last year.

A rising star in the Democratic Party, Ocasio-Cortez recently rallied the progressive base against a plan by the Democratic Party's campaign arm to protect incumbents from would-be primary challengers such as herself.

The Real National Emergency Is Not at the Border

The Real National Emergency Is Not at the Border

Unlike Donald Trump's manufactured crisis and his vanity wall at the Mexico border, severe income inequality and economic greed are true national emergencies. Still, the President plans to ask for $8.6 billion for the wall and a 5% cut across federal agencies -- except for defense -- in his 2020 fiscal budget.

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – Last year was a low point for Danske Bank due to the massive money laundering scandal linked to its Estonian branch, but also a turning point for the Danish bank, its chairman told investors at an annual general meeting in Copenhagen on Monday.

“2018 became a low point for Danske Bank. But I also see it as a turning point,” Karsten Dybvad said, adding the bank began an internal dialogue about its role in society.

Maryland man allegedly attacked for wearing MAGA hat says it won’t stop him from putting it on again

The Maryland man who police say was attacked for wearing a 'Make America Great Again' hat said he will not stop wearing the cap showing his support for President Trump.

Atsu Mable, in an appearance on "Fox & Friends" Wednesday, also said he forgives the two strangers alleged to have gone after him Saturday night in Germantown, outside of Washington, D.C.

“I have a message for love – that Jesus said in the Bible that you must love your neighbor, so I still love them,” he told Fox News. “I think whatever happened to me that day should not happen to anybody.

“I forgive them. I’m ready to make peace with them if I could see them again,” he added.

Jovan Crawford, left, and Scott Duncan Roberson are accused of attacking a man in Maryland because he was wearing a 'Make America Great Again' hat.

Mable said he was walking off his dinner that night when he was approached by strangers, one of which told him “you shouldn’t be wearing that hat, bro.”

“I said ‘this is not your problem – it doesn’t matter – it’s a personal reason,’” Mable told ‘Fox & Friends’.

Mable said he then walked away but felt someone punch his back, and a fight ensued. Possessions belonging to Mable were taken by the suspects and destroyed during the brawl, the Montgomery County Department of Police said in a statement.

Officers later tracked down Jovan Crawford, 27, and Scott Duncan Roberson, 25, who were: “attempting to hide among a group of children playing basketball”.

Both men are now facing numerous charges, including robbery, attempted theft, and second-degree assault.

“I like the message that the president brought back in 2015 when he was running,” Mable said.

“I’m very proud of wearing the hat,” he added, noting that he will put it on again in the future.

US cautions Russia over military mission in Venezuela

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has told the Russian foreign minister that Russia's dispatch of military personnel to Venezuela is increasing tensions there.

U.S. State Department spokesman Robert Palladino says Pompeo called Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday and said "the United States and regional countries will not stand idly by" while Russia takes steps to support its ally, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Pompeo's call came after a Venezuelan official said Russian aircraft arrived in Caracas this weekend as part of ongoing military cooperation. Reports that two Russian air force planes arrived could not be independently confirmed.

The U.S. and dozens of other countries support Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, who says Maduro's re-election last year was rigged. Maduro alleges the U.S. and Guaido are plotting a coup.

BERLIN (Reuters) – Wulf Matthias will not stand for a second term as Wirecard’s chairman in 2020, German daily Handelsblatt said on Friday, citing sources in the financial industry.

For age reasons alone this would not be an option for Matthias, aged 75, Handelsblatt added.

Matthias will keep his mandate until it ends in 2020, the paper quoted a company spokeswoman as saying.

Wirecard was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.

ZURICH (Reuters) – Shareholders approved Credit Suisse’s 2018 compensation report with an 82 percent majority on Friday, overriding frustrations expressed at its annual general meeting over jumps in executive pay during a year its share price plummeted.

Three shareholder advisers had recommended investors vote against Switzerland’s second-biggest bank’s remuneration report, while a fourth backed the report but expressed reservations about whether management pay matched performance.

The approval marked a slight increase over the 80.8 percent support garnered for the bank’s 2017 compensation report.

LONDON (Reuters) – Activist investor Edward Bramson is likely to fail in his attempt to get a board seat at Barclays’ annual meeting next week, even though shareholders are dissatisfied with performance of the group’s investment bank.

New York-based Bramson’s Sherborne Investors and the board of the British bank have been sparring for months over Barclays’ strategy.

Bramson wants to scale back Barclays’ investment bank to reduce risk and boost shareholder returns. Barclays Chief Executive Jes Staley remains staunchly committed to growing the business out of trouble.

After failing to persuade Staley to change course since he began building a 5.5 percent stake in the bank in March last year, Bramson hopes a board seat will rachet up the pressure.

Both sides have written to shareholders pitching their case and Bramson has courted investors in one-on-one meetings, although none have publicly backed him yet.

Interviews by Reuters with five institutional investors in Barclays suggest Bramson has failed to persuade them.

Sherborne declined to comment.

Mirza Baig, head of investment stewardship at top-40 shareholder Aviva Investors, said Bramson was welcome on the bank’s register but the boardroom was a step too far.

“He has created a lot of value at other businesses, but, generally, when he has come in as executive chair and taken full control. This would be a different case where he would just be one lone voice on the board,” he said.

A second Barclays shareholder said he backed Bramson’s goal of improving returns but via an “evolutionary” approach.

“If you look at banks that have tried to restructure their operations in investment banking – you look at Natwest Markets, Deutsche Bank – I struggle to think of an example where a roughshod restructuring has been accretive to shareholder value.”

A third, top-30 investor said he had been impressed by incoming Chairman Nigel Higgins’ grasp of the challenge in hand, and felt investors would give him time.

“Management know they have to execute and deliver improved returns… [Higgins] will continue to re-shape the board but obviously he didn’t feel that having someone with a diametrically opposed view on it would be helpful.”

A fourth, top-30 investor agreed: “We voted for the chairman to come in and it would be crazy to allow an activist to join the board (at this time).”

Jupiter Fund Management, the 24th largest investor, said it also planned to vote against Bramson.

Barclays has nearly 500 institutional shareholders, Refinitiv data showed.

Since Staley joined Barclays in 2015, the investment bank returns relative to capital invested have increased but are still underperforming the overall business.

Barclays’ first-quarter figures showed the investment bank posted a 6 percent drop in income from its markets business and a 17 percent fall in banking advisory fees.

Returns in the investment bank fell to 9.5 percent from 13.2 percent a year ago.

Famed for successful campaigns against smaller British companies in sectors from chemicals to advertising, Bramson’s board seat pitch has been rebuffed by shareholder advisory firms.

Institutional Shareholder Services, the world’s biggest, said Bramson’s proposal “falls short of what can reasonably be expected from a shareholder trying to address issues at a 28 billion pounds, systemically important bank”.

Glass Lewis also flagged concern about Bramson’s lack of banking experience and “questionable” shareholding structure, referring to Sherborne’s use of derivative contracts to hedge losses should its strategy fail.

Critics said the arrangement meant his interests are not truly aligned with those of other long-term shareholders.

British advisory firm Pirc, however, said it recommended that investors abstain in the vote on Bramson’s proposal as a challenge to the board to do better in the year ahead – or face a similar contest in 2020.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.
