NJ major slammed for replying to anti-Semitic tweet says he was ‘misinterpreted’

A New Jersey mayor, accused of anti-Semitism on Twitter after telling a resident to call the cops on "Hasidic and Orthodox Jews" invading parks and beaches, apologized Wednesday and said it was a big "misinterpretation."

A resident of Brick Township reportedly tweeted: "Can we please do something about our parks and beaches. They are being invaded by the Hasidic and Orthodox Jews and being ruined. Our tax paying residents are being forced out while politicians sit and do nothing."

RABBI BLASTS ILHAN OMAR, NYT FOR PUSHING CLAIM JESUS WAS ‘PALESTINIAN,’ NOT JEWISH

Mayor John G. Ducey responded on Twitter: "Our parks security has started already. Just call police with any problems and they will send them out."

Yashar Ali, a high-profile freelance journalist whose work has appeared in the Huffington Post and New York magazine, shared a screenshot of the tweet and pointed out Ducey "makes no mention of the tweeters anti-Semitic tone."

MEDIA DIDN'T CALL SRI LANKA MASSACRE AN ATTACK ON CHRISTIANS. HERE'S WHY A MUSLIM SCHOLAR CALLS IT 'VERY TROUBLING'

The mayor denies his response was anti-Semitic, adding he answers every tweet addressed to him.

“I did not want to acknowledge the bigotry thereby giving the commenter the power he was seeking,” Ducey tweeted to one critic. “I just tried to diffuse things and focus his anger at me. … I’ve done pretty well for six years but this is a learning experience.”

Brick borders Lakewood, which has surged in population with one of the largest Orthodox Jewish communities in the world, according to NJ.com.

On Wednesday morning, Ducey wrote: "This twitter feed (and the world in general) is no place for bigotry or hateful comments. They are hurtful and divisive. They are condemned by me and all who are trying to make a difference in the world. Look for the good in you and others and the world will be a bettter place."

The mayor's office did not immediately respond for comment.

The Latest: Avenatti refuses to testify at civil case

The Latest on new federal charges against attorney Michael Avenatti (all times local):

2:50 p.m.

Attorney Michael Avenatti has refused to testify in a court case involving money he owes a former legal partner.

Avenatti appeared briefly in Los Angeles Superior Court as federal prosecutors outlined fraud and other charges against him in a 36-count indictment.

Avenatti had been scheduled to face questioning about some of nearly $15 million he owes attorney Jason Frank for legal work.

Attorney Ron Hodges says Avenatti, his client, asserted his 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination and didn't testify.

Andrew Stolper, who represents Frank, says Avenatti would have faced questions about money he's charged with stealing from clients.

Avenatti tweeted that he will plead not guilty and fight the charges.

Stolper says Avenatti told Frank outside court that he won't get paid now that federal authorities seized his private jet.

Attorney Michael Avenatti could face a sentence of 335 years in prison if convicted of charges in a 36-count federal indictment.

But even if he is convicted of all counts, it would be unlikely for Avenatti to receive such a lengthy prison term

The indictment announced Thursday in Los Angeles alleges Avenattti stole millions of dollars from clients, didn't pay taxes, committed bank fraud and lied during bankruptcy proceedings.

U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna says the four areas of alleged criminal conduct are all linked to each other because money generated from one set of alleged crimes appears in other sets of alleged crimes.

Officials say a private jet co-owned by Avenatti was seized Wednesday as part of the ongoing investigation.

Avenatti has tweeted denials of all the allegations and says he will plead not guilty.

The indictment filed against attorney Michael Avenatti alleges he stole millions of dollars from clients, did not pay his taxes, committed bank fraud and lied in bankruptcy proceedings.

Avenatti was indicted late Wednesday on the charges following his arrest in New York last month for allegedly trying to shake down Nike for up to $25 million.

The attorney best known for representing porn actress Stormy Daniels in lawsuits against President Donald Trump said Thursday he will plead not guilty.

The new charges say he embezzled from a paraplegic man and four other clients and shuffled money between several accounts to deceive them.

The charges also say Avenatti pocketed payroll taxes from employees of the Tully's coffee chain that he owned.

___

7:30 a.m.

Attorney Michael Avenatti says he will plead not guilty to a 36-count federal indictment filed against him in Southern California.

Avenatti tweeted Thursday that he intends to fight all of the charges and says he looks forward to the truth being known, as opposed to what he characterizes as a "one-sided version."

A statement from prosecutors to news outlets says details of the case will be released Thursday morning by U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna and the Internal Revenue Service in Los Angeles.

The new charges follow Avenatti's arrest in New York last month for allegedly trying to shake down Nike for up to $25 million and on two counts of wire and bank fraud from Southern California, where his firm is based.

Long-outlawed US trade policy wins WTO approval in Canada lumber dispute

By Tom Miles

GENEVA (Reuters) – A World Trade Organization ruling approved a long-outlawed U.S. trade policy on Tuesday, when a panel of adjudicators said Washington’s use of “zeroing” to calculate anti-dumping tariffs was permissible in the case of Canadian softwood lumber.

The WTO’s long-running row over zeroing is a technical dispute that turned into a power struggle between the United States and the arbiters of international trade law.

The United States has suffered a string of defeats at the WTO over zeroing, a calculation method that was ruled to have unfairly increased the level of U.S. anti-dumping duties.

The repeated losses helped to fuel U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign to reform the WTO, where the United States is blocking appointments at the WTO’s Appellate Body, effectively the supreme court of world trade.

Trump said last year the United States could withdraw from the WTO if “they don’t shape up”.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer welcomed the ruling by a WTO dispute panel, which he said showed the “erroneous”, “unpersuasive” and “flawed reasoning” of Appellate Body rulings in the past.

“The United States commends this panel for doing its own interpretive analysis, and for having the courage to stand up to the undue pressure that the Appellate Body has been putting on panels for many years,” Lighthizer said in a statement.

He said the WTO rules did not prohibit zeroing, and the United States would never have signed up to WTO rules that did prohibit the practice.

“WTO Appellate Body reports to the contrary are wrong, and reflect over-reaching by that body,” he said.

Canada launched the WTO dispute in November 2017, saying it would forcefully defend its lumber industry against “unfair, unwarranted and deeply troubling” U.S. tariffs.

The U.S. Commerce Department had accused Canada of unfairly subsidizing and dumping softwood lumber, which is commonly used in the construction of homes. Its duties affected about $5.66 billion worth of imports.

There was no immediate reaction from Canada’s international trade ministry, which could appeal against the ruling.

NHL notebook: Lightning give Cooper multi-year extension

FILE PHOTO: Ice Hockey - 2017 IIHF World Championship - Quarterfinal - Canada v Germany - Cologne, Germany - 18/5/17 - Canada's head coach Jon Cooper watches the game. REUTERS/Wolfgang Rattay

March 27, 2019

The Tampa Bay Lightning announced a multi-year contract extension Tuesday for coach Jon Cooper amid a record-breaking season for the franchise.

With five games left in the regular season, the Lightning lead the NHL with 122 points — nine more than the previous franchise record set last season.

“I am very pleased to announce Jon’s extension today,” vice president and general manager Julien BriseBois said in a statement. “His ability to forge impactful relationships with everyone from players to staff has been a trademark of his tenure with the organization and he is the absolute best coach for our hockey team.”

Cooper, 51, joined the Lightning in March 2013 and owns a 302-157-44 record. He is the longest-tenured and the winningest coach in franchise history.

–New York Islanders forward Andrew Ladd has a torn left ACL but should be healthy in time for training camp next fall, general manager Lou Lamoriello said.

Ladd, 33, tallied three goals and eight assists in 26 games before getting hurt in Sunday’s 2-0 win against Arizona.

Lamoriello said Ladd’s leadership and his postseason experience — including Stanley Cup championships with Carolina in 2006 and Chicago in 2010 — will be missed. “It’s always difficult to lose a veteran who has experience,” Lamoriello said. “He’s played very well the last few games he’s played, but this, it’s part of the game.”

–Philadelphia announced the signing of left wing Michael Raffl to a two-year, $3.2 million extension, keeping him with the Flyers through the 2020-21 campaign.

The 30-year-old Austrian has played all six seasons of his NHL career with the Flyers and has 70 goals and 62 assists (132 points) in 406 career games. He has six goals and 12 assists in 61 games this season.

“We’re happy to have Michael for the next two years,” Philadelphia general manager Chuck Fletcher said in a statement. “Throughout his six seasons with the Flyers he has played a pivotal role in a variety of positions and situations. His versatility, experience and work ethic will be valuable assets to our team going forward.”

Trump says Democrats have become 'anti-Jewish' party, calls bigotry resolution a 'disgrace'

President Trump accused Democrats on Friday of becoming an “anti-Israel” and “anti-Jewish” party, after the House passed a broad resolution that called out bigotry of all kinds without directly condemning freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar for allegedly anti-Semitic remarks.

From the White House lawn before departing for Alabama on Friday, the president called Thursday’s House vote a “disgrace.”

HOUSE PASSES BROAD RESOLUTION CALLING OUT RACISM, 'ANTI-SEMITIC,' COMMENTS --WITHOUT NAMING ILHAN OMAR

“Democrats have become an anti-Israel party. They’ve become an anti-Jewish party,” Trump said. “I think the vote was a disgrace.”

The president said that most lawmakers would agree that the resolution, which did not mention Omar, D-Minn., by name, was a disgrace “if you get an honest answer.”

The final vote on the resolution was 407 to 23—with 23 Republicans voting no, and all Democrats, including Omar, voting yes. The final draft of the resolution was expanded Thursday afternoon to condemn all forms of bigotry, including white supremacy, in what Republicans characterized as a ploy to distract from Omar’s remarks which had prompted the resolution in the first place.

“Today’s resolution vote was a sham put forward by Democrats to avoid condemning one of their own and denouncing vile anti-Semitism,” House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney, R-Wy., said Thursday. “While I stand whole heartedly against discrimination outlined in this resolution, the language before the House today did not address the issue front and center.”

Cheney was among the 23 Republicans who did not support the resolution.

OMAR RETWEETS POST BLASTING MEGHAN MCCAIN FOR 'FAUX OUTRAGE' IN RESPONSE TO OMAR'S REMARKS ON ISRAEL

Meanwhile, Omar and Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Rep. Andre Carson of Indiana called the vote “historic.”

“Today is historic on many fronts,” they said in a statement. “It’s the first time we have voted on a resolution condemning Anti-Muslim bigotry in our nation’s history.”

The measure originally was drafted in response to Omar suggesting that Israel supporters want U.S. lawmakers to pledge “allegiance” to the Jewish state – which was widely condemned as echoing the age-old “dual loyalties” smear against Jewish politicians.

Omar also tweeted in 2012 that “Israel hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evil doings of Israel.” Omar apologized for her comments and deleted the tweet.

"Anti-Semitism is real and I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes,” she said.

(Reuters) – Exxon Mobil Corp on Friday reported first-quarter profit fell sharply on lower oil and gas prices and weakness in its refining and chemicals businesses that offset modest production gains.

The largest U.S. oil producer’s first quarter earnings fell to $2.35 billion, or 55 cents a share, from $4.65 billion, or $1.09 a share, a year ago.

Analysts had expected Exxon to earn 70 cents per share, according to Refinitiv Eikon estimates.

Shares were trading down about 2.7 percent in premarket trading on Friday.

Exxon’s oil equivalent production rose 2 percent to 4 million barrels per day, up from 3.9 million bpd in the same period the year prior. The company said its output in the Permian Basin, the largest U.S. shale basin, rose 140 percent over a year ago.

A Baha’i advocacy group has expressed concerns over the fate of minority Baha’is at the hands of Yemen’s Houthi rebels ahead of the appeals hearing for one of the community leaders sentenced to death.

The Baha’i International Community said in a statement Friday that the hearing for Hamed bin Haydara, detained in 2013 and sentenced to death last year on espionage and apostasy charges, is due on Tuesday.

The statement quotes Bani Dugal, the Baha’i community representative at the United Nations, as saying the prosecution hasn’t addressed Haydara’s appeal but is instead making “absurd, wide-ranging accusations.”

International rights groups have decried the prosecution of Yemeni Baha’is by the Iran-backed Houthis.

Iran has banned the Baha’i religion, which was founded in 1844 by a Persian nobleman considered a prophet by followers.

KABUL (Reuters) – Afghan President Ashraf Ghani encouraged newly-elected lawmakers to participate in the peace process with the Taliban as he opened on Friday the first session of parliament since a controversial election.

Ghani has invited thousands of politicians, religious scholars and rights activists to an assembly known as a loya jirga next week to discuss ways to end the 17-year war.

Several opposition leaders have said they will boycott the four-day assembly in Kabul, saying it was pulled together without their input and is being used by Ghani as he seeks a second term in a September presidential election.

“We have presented the peace plan on a regular basis and we are committed to it,” Ghani said in the first session since parliamentary elections marred by technical problems, militant attacks and accusations of voting fraud last year.

“Based on this plan, there will be no peace deal and negotiation that does not have the green card of the parliament,” he added.

Officials from the United States and the Taliban have held several rounds of talks to end the Afghan war.

U.S. negotiator, Zalmay Khalilzad, has reported some progress toward an accord on a U.S. troop withdrawal and on how the Taliban would prevent extremists from using Afghanistan to launch attacks as al Qaeda did on Sept. 11, 2001.

The insurgents have so far rejected U.S. demands for a ceasefire and talks on the country’s political future that would include Afghan government officials.

The loya jirga, a centuries-old institution used to build consensus among competing tribes, factions and ethnic groups, is an attempt by Ghani to influence the peace talks and cement his position for a second term, Afghan politicians and Western diplomats say.

Amid growing political divisions in Kabul, opposition politicians have demanded that Ghani step down when his mandate ends next month, and give way to an interim government to oversee peace talks with the Taliban. Ghani has ruled that out.

The country’s top court said last week Ghani can stay in office until the presidential election in September.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein Thursday defended special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation while slamming former President Barack Obama’s administration for being slow to take action on Russian interference in U.S. elections and ex-FBI Director James Comey for telling Congress the agency was investigating collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

“Our nation is safer, elections are more secure, and citizens are better informed about covert foreign influence schemes,” Rosenstein said in a speech to the Armenian Bar Association, marking his first public remarks after the Mueller report was released, reports CBS News.

He also pointed out that the investigation revealed a pattern of computer hacking and the use of social media to undermine elections as “only the tip of the iceberg of a comprehensive Russian strategy to influence elections, promote social discord, and undermine America, just like they do in many other countries,” reports The Wall Street Journal.

The Obama administration also made “critical decisions,” including choosing not to publicize the full story about Russian hackers and social media trolling, “and how they relate to a broader strategy to undermine America,” said Rosenstein.

He noted that the Mueller probe began after Comey disclosed during a hearing before Congress that President Donald Trump “pressured him to close the investigation and the president denied that the conversation occurred.”

Rosenstein said two years ago, when he was confirmed, he was told by a Republican senator that he would be in charge of the probe and that he’d report the results to the American people.

However, he said he didn’t promise to do that, because it is “not our job to render conclusive factual findings. We just decide whether it is appropriate to file criminal charges.”

BEIJING (Reuters) – Britain must get to the bottom of the leak of confidential discussions during a top-level security meeting about the role of China’s Huawei Technologies in 5G network supply chains, British finance minister Philip Hammond said on Friday.

News that Britain’s National Security Council, attended by senior ministers and spy chiefs, had agreed on Tuesday to bar Huawei from all core parts of the country’s 5G network and restrict its access to non-core elements was leaked to a national newspaper.

The leak of secret discussions has sparked anger in parliament and amongst Britain’s intelligence community. Britain’s most senior civil servant Mark Sedwill has launched an inquiry and written to ministers who were at the meeting.

“My understanding from London (is) that an investigation has been announced into apparent leaks from the NSC meeting earlier this week,” said Hammond, speaking on the sidelines of a summit on China’s Belt and Road initiative in Beijing.

“To my knowledge there has never been a leak from a National Security Council meeting before and therefore I think it is very important that we get to the bottom of what happened here,” he told Reuters in a pooled interview.

British culture minister Jeremy Wright said on Thursday he could not rule out a criminal investigation. The majority of the ministers at the NSC meeting have said they were not involved, according to media reports.

Hammond said he was unaware of any previous leak from a meeting of the NSC.

“It’s not about the substance of what was apparently leaked. It’s not earth-shattering information. But it is important that we protect the principle that nothing that goes on in national security council meetings must ever be repeated outside the room.”

Allowing Huawei a reduced role in building its 5G network puts Britain at odds with the United States which has told allies not to use its technology at all because of fears it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying. Huawei has categorically denied this.

There have been concerns that the NSC’s conclusion, which sources confirmed to Reuters, could upset other allies in the world’s leading intelligence-sharing network – the Five Eyes alliance of the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

However, British ministers and intelligence officials have said any final decision on 5G would not put critical national infrastructure at risk. Ciaran Martin, head of the cyber center of Britain’s main eavesdropping agency, GCHQ, played down any threat of a rift in the Five Eyes alliance.
