U.S.-backed SDF hand Iraqi, foreign Islamic State fighters to Iraq

February 21, 2019

BAGHDAD (Reuters) – U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) handed over more than 150 Iraqi and other foreign Islamic State fighters to Iraq on Thursday.

The handover was the first of several, two Iraqi military sources told Reuters, under an agreement brokered to handover a total of 502 fighters.

“The majority of the fighters are Iraqi,” said a military colonel whose unit is stationed at the Syrian border. “But we have a few foreigners.”

The mayor of Iraqi border town Al-Qaim, Ahmed al-Mahallawi, said some fighters’ families were also transferred.

“Early this morning, 10 trucks loaded with Daesh fighters and their families were handed over by SDF forces to the Iraqi army,” he said, using the Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

“The majority of them are Iraqis and the convoy was under maximum security protection headed to the Jazeera and Badiya military headquarters.” Both bases are located in Anbar province.

The SDF and the U.S.-backed coalition could not immediately be reached for comment.

News of the handover came as U.S.-backed forces were readying for an assault on the militant group’s final enclave in eastern Syria. The last civilians are expected to be evacuated on Thursday, to clear the way for the assault, the SDF said.

Around 800 of foreign jihadist fighters who joined Islamic State, including many Iraqis, are being held in Syria by the SDF, the group said. More than 2,000 family members are also in camps, with dozens more arriving each day.

Their fate has become more pressing in recent days as U.S.-backed fighters planned their assault to capture the last remnants of the group’s self-styled caliphate.

On Tuesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi said Iraq was carefully monitoring the situation at its Syrian border amid concerns that the remaining Islamic State fighters could stream across the border.

The militant group still poses a threat in Iraq and some western officials believe that the group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, may still be hiding there.

Judge rips into Roger Stone, bars him from speaking publicly on case: 'There will be no third chance'

A federal judge has completely barred former Trump political adviser Roger Stone from speaking publicly about his ongoing prosecution on obstruction and false statement charges, following a hearing on Thursday in which Stone took the stand to insist he was "heartfully sorry" for the picture of the judge that appeared on his Instagram showing what seemed to be crosshairs in the background.

U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson tore into Stone, saying she simply didn't believe his explanation that an unnamed "volunteer" had selected the image.

"I have serious doubts about whether you learned anything at all," Jackson said. "From this moment on, the defendant may not speak publicly about this case -- period. No statements about the case on TV, radio, print reporters, or Internet. No posts on social media. [You] may not comment on the case through surrogates. You may send out emails about donating to the Roger Stone defense fund."

Jackson added an apparent threat to revoke Stone's bail and send him to jail: "This is not baseball. There will be no third chance. If you cannot abide by this, I will be forced to change your surroundings so you have no temptations."

Jackson had issued a limited gag order in Stone's case last week, preventing him from discussing the case near the courthouse. Stone was being questioned Thursday by Jackson and government lawyers as to why Jackson should not issue a full gag order, or modify or revoke Stone's bail -- potentially sending him to jail.

On Thursday, Stone made the risky decision to take the stand. He denied using his phone to post the image himself, and under questioning from prosecutors and Jackson, claimed that an unnamed "volunteer" had picked the image -- even though he said he accepted responsibility for the post. The image was accompanied by a caption referring to "deep state hitman Robert Mueller" and called his prosecution a "show trial."

At one point during Thursday's hearing, Stone's lawyer, Bruce Rogow, called the post that featured Jackson's image "indefensible." Jackson replied: "I agree with you there."

The government is asking for additional restrictions on Stone's ability to talk about this case, while Stone's attorneys are requesting a more detailed court order that still allows Stone to be able to retain his ability to speak publicly about the case, citing his First Amendment rights. A final ruling from Jackson could come within minutes.

"I am under enormous pressure," Stone testified. "I now have TV people saying I will be raped if I go to jail. I'm having trouble putting food on the table and paying the rent." (Indeed, CNN senior political analyst David Gergen pondered on air Monday if Stone -- whom he called a "dandy" -- would be raped in prison.)

Stone deleted the Instagram photo, but later posted the same one again, this time without the apparent crosshairs, and slammed the trial in a caption.

In court, Stone said he "didn’t recognize it as a crosshair" and "didn't notice" a crosshair in the image. Stone claimed a "volunteer" has selected the image, although Stone acknowledged reviewing the image before it was posted.

"This was a screwup," Stone said. "I admit it."

Rather than crosshairs, Stone said, he thought the image contained a "Celtic occult" symbol. But, he added, he wasn't sure what the symbol meant, because "I’m not into the occult."

CNN ANALYST PONDERS: WILL STONE BE SUBJECT TO RAPE IN PRISON?

Jackson reminded Stone before his testimony that he would be subject to government cross-examination and was under oath. Asked whether he understood the picture could be construed as a threat, Stone replied: "I now recognize that. … I can’t rationalize my thinking because I wasn’t thinking, and that’s my fault."

"I am kicking myself for my own stupidity, but not more than my wife is kicking me," Stone later told Jackson. He added that "my consulting business has dried up" and said, "I've exhausted my savings."

"This is not baseball. There will be no third chance."

— U.S. District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson

Stone acknowledged that "the posting was my responsibility, and I regret it. This was an egregious stupid error, for which I apologize again to the court."

Stone and his lawyers filed a notice on Monday night, admitting that sharing the picture wasn't appropriate and that he was sorry.

Stone pleaded not guilty last month to obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and making false statements to Congress after being indicted last month as part of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe, was also ordered not to travel anywhere other than Washington, the Eastern District of New York, and the Southern District of Florida while the case is pending.

Stone is not permitted to have a passport in his possession or apply for any new passport. Stone was also ordered to return to court “whenever required.”

This is a developing story. Check back soon for more updates.

(Reuters) – Double Olympic champion James Cracknell is set to become the oldest person to compete in the Varsity boat race, with his Cambridge crew ranked as firm favorites to win the event on Sunday.

The 46-year-old retired from competitive rowing in 2006 but qualified for the event because he is studying a Master of Philosophy degree in human evolution at the University.

Cracknell, who won Olympic gold at Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004, would also become the most decorated man to row in the annual contest between Cambridge and Oxford.

British bookmaker William Hill said Cracknell’s inclusion has steered Cambridge from 11/10 outsiders to firm favorites at 1/5. Oxford are 7/2 to win the race.

“We aren’t sure whether it is the presence of James Cracknell in the Cambridge boat that has persuaded punters to part with their cash or the fact that people think they are much better,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly.

“Regardless of the reason, 62 percent of all bets and 95 percent of all the money placed on the race has been for Cambridge.”

Cambridge won all four races against Oxford last year, triumphing in the men’s, women’s and both reserve crew races at the event held on River Thames.

MLB notebook: Giants, Phillies reportedly in lead for Harper

February 21, 2019

Free agent outfielder Bryce Harper, still hunting for a long-term deal, has reportedly turned down multiple offers worth at least $300 million in recent weeks, according to a report Wednesday by Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

All eyes are on Harper after the San Diego Padres reportedly agreed this week to give shortstop Manny Machado a 10-year, $300 million deal, the second-biggest in major league history in terms of total value.

That leaves Harper as the gem of this free agent class, and he’s looking to top the Machado deal.

Heyman wrote that five teams are in contact with Harper and agent Scott Boras, but two teams appear to be in the lead — the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies — while other reports indicate teams are dropping out. Harper’s former team, the Washington Nationals, could still be in the picture, according to reports.

–Free agent infielder Josh Harrison has reached an agreement on a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

The deal reportedly is pending a physical. Harrison is expected to be the Tigers’ everyday second baseman.

Harrison, 31, has spent his eight-year career with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a utility player, starting 352 games at second base, 207 at third base, 80 in the outfield and 22 at shortstop. He was selected to the All-Star Game in 2014 and ’17.

–Jed Lowrie’s preparation for his first season with the New York Mets will slow down considerably after an issue with his left knee was deemed serious enough for an MRI.

Lowrie, who turns 35 in April, said at spring training in Port St. Lucie, Fla., that the back of his left knee has been giving him discomfort. He signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Mets last month.

The 11-year veteran is coming off a season with the Oakland Athletics in which he hit a career-best 23 home runs with 99 RBIs and made his first All-Star Game appearance. He also finished 20th in American League MVP voting.

–Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season, but he is open to signing a contract extension before it comes to that point.

Rendon, 28, spoke with reporters about his willingness to stay in Washington if the deal is right. He has clubbed at least 20 home runs in each of the past three seasons, and he has eclipsed .300 in back-to-back seasons.

“We talked about (an extension) over the last year or so, and if both parties can be happy, then we’ll see,” Rendon said in comments published by MASNSports.com. “If not, then we’ll see what happens. We had more discussions (this winter), but I can’t lay all the cards out on the table for y’all. I’ve got to leave y’all in suspicion.”

Brother of Iran's president goes on trial for corruption

The trial has begun for Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's brother and close confidante, who faces corruption allegations brought by hard-liners who dominate the country's judiciary.

The semi-official ISNA news agency reported that Hossein Fereidoun, who was on the team that negotiated Iran's 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers, went on trial Tuesday with four other defendants. They are charged with financial misconduct dating back to 2016.

Earlier this month, hard-line Iranian lawmakers called on the judiciary to expedite the trial. Fereidoun spent the night in prison in 2017 but has since been free on bail.

Rouhani, a relative moderate within Iran's political system, changed his surname decades ago.

Iran has jailed allies of former presidents for similar charges.

BERLIN (Reuters) – Wulf Matthias will not stand for a second term as Wirecard’s chairman in 2020, German daily Handelsblatt said on Friday, citing sources in the financial industry.

For age reasons alone this would not be an option for Matthias, aged 75, Handelsblatt added.

Matthias will keep his mandate until it ends in 2020, the paper quoted a company spokeswoman as saying.

Wirecard was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.

ZURICH (Reuters) – Shareholders approved Credit Suisse’s 2018 compensation report with an 82 percent majority on Friday, overriding frustrations expressed at its annual general meeting over jumps in executive pay during a year its share price plummeted.

Three shareholder advisers had recommended investors vote against Switzerland’s second-biggest bank’s remuneration report, while a fourth backed the report but expressed reservations about whether management pay matched performance.

The approval marked a slight increase over the 80.8 percent support garnered for the bank’s 2017 compensation report.

LONDON (Reuters) – Activist investor Edward Bramson is likely to fail in his attempt to get a board seat at Barclays’ annual meeting next week, even though shareholders are dissatisfied with performance of the group’s investment bank.

New York-based Bramson’s Sherborne Investors and the board of the British bank have been sparring for months over Barclays’ strategy.

Bramson wants to scale back Barclays’ investment bank to reduce risk and boost shareholder returns. Barclays Chief Executive Jes Staley remains staunchly committed to growing the business out of trouble.

After failing to persuade Staley to change course since he began building a 5.5 percent stake in the bank in March last year, Bramson hopes a board seat will rachet up the pressure.

Both sides have written to shareholders pitching their case and Bramson has courted investors in one-on-one meetings, although none have publicly backed him yet.

Interviews by Reuters with five institutional investors in Barclays suggest Bramson has failed to persuade them.

Sherborne declined to comment.

Mirza Baig, head of investment stewardship at top-40 shareholder Aviva Investors, said Bramson was welcome on the bank’s register but the boardroom was a step too far.

“He has created a lot of value at other businesses, but, generally, when he has come in as executive chair and taken full control. This would be a different case where he would just be one lone voice on the board,” he said.

A second Barclays shareholder said he backed Bramson’s goal of improving returns but via an “evolutionary” approach.

“If you look at banks that have tried to restructure their operations in investment banking – you look at Natwest Markets, Deutsche Bank – I struggle to think of an example where a roughshod restructuring has been accretive to shareholder value.”

A third, top-30 investor said he had been impressed by incoming Chairman Nigel Higgins’ grasp of the challenge in hand, and felt investors would give him time.

“Management know they have to execute and deliver improved returns… [Higgins] will continue to re-shape the board but obviously he didn’t feel that having someone with a diametrically opposed view on it would be helpful.”

A fourth, top-30 investor agreed: “We voted for the chairman to come in and it would be crazy to allow an activist to join the board (at this time).”

Jupiter Fund Management, the 24th largest investor, said it also planned to vote against Bramson.

Barclays has nearly 500 institutional shareholders, Refinitiv data showed.

Since Staley joined Barclays in 2015, the investment bank returns relative to capital invested have increased but are still underperforming the overall business.

Barclays’ first-quarter figures showed the investment bank posted a 6 percent drop in income from its markets business and a 17 percent fall in banking advisory fees.

Returns in the investment bank fell to 9.5 percent from 13.2 percent a year ago.

Famed for successful campaigns against smaller British companies in sectors from chemicals to advertising, Bramson’s board seat pitch has been rebuffed by shareholder advisory firms.

Institutional Shareholder Services, the world’s biggest, said Bramson’s proposal “falls short of what can reasonably be expected from a shareholder trying to address issues at a 28 billion pounds, systemically important bank”.

Glass Lewis also flagged concern about Bramson’s lack of banking experience and “questionable” shareholding structure, referring to Sherborne’s use of derivative contracts to hedge losses should its strategy fail.

Critics said the arrangement meant his interests are not truly aligned with those of other long-term shareholders.

British advisory firm Pirc, however, said it recommended that investors abstain in the vote on Bramson’s proposal as a challenge to the board to do better in the year ahead – or face a similar contest in 2020.

(Reuters) – U.S. oil and natural gas producer Chevron Corp reported a 27 percent fall in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by lower crude prices and weaker margins in its refining and chemicals businesses.

Net income attributable to the company fell to $2.65 billion, or $1.39 per share, for the first quarter ended March 31, from $3.64 billion, or $1.90 per share, a year earlier.

Earlier in the day, larger rival Exxon Mobil Corp reported earnings well below analysts’ estimates, as margins in its refining business were hurt by higher Canadian prices and heavy scheduled maintenance.
