Bear cubs found by California highway may have been poached

Wildlife officials say they believe someone illegally separated two bear cubs from their mother and left the young animals along a Northern California highway.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says its investigators are processing evidence discovered with the cubs March 9 along State Route 96.

Game wardens say they couldn't find the mother, so they took the cubs to be evaluated by wildlife veterinarians who determined they were healthy.

The cubs were then transferred to a rehabilitation facility in South Lake Tahoe.

Investigators from the department are seeking tips from the public. They said there are only a few hundred wildlife officers spread throughout California and they need help from residents to combat poaching.

ISIS bride claims she’d be model citizen if she’s allowed to return to US: ‘I didn’t hate America’

NORTHERN SYRIA -- In the dying days of the caliphate, thousands of ISIS families fled into the Syrian desert trying to escape the incessant bombardment of U.S. airpower.

Among them, Hoda Muthana, the woman born in America who joined ISIS. She is now living in a squalid camp in Northern Syria – and Fox News tracked her down.

“I just want to go back home,” she said. “I want my son to see my family, I want him to be safe in Syria. It’s not safe here, no matter what my government tells me.”

But the U.S. insists Muthana is not and has never been a U.S. citizen because her father was a Yemeni diplomat at the time of her birth. Her lawyer is fighting this.

President Trump and secretary of State Mike Pompeo have both said she’s not welcome. In February, Trump tweeted that he instructed Pompeo to not “allow Hoda Muthana back into the country.”

While she was a part of ISIS, she became a mouthpiece for the terror group, calling for Americans to be killed.

“Americans wake up! Men and women altogether. You have much to do while you live under our greatest enemy, enough of your sleeping! Go on drive-bys and spill all of their blood, or rent a big truck and drive all over them. Veterans, Patriot, Memorial etc Day parades..go on drive by’s + spill all of their blood or rent a big truck n drive all over them. Kill them,” she tweeted last month in a post that has since been taken down.

She claims ISIS took over her Twitter account, and that now, with therapy, she could become a model citizen.

“Before I came, I’ve never done any crime and I’m sure I’m not going to be doing any crimes in the future,” she said, “and I know I’ve come to Syria and look like I am a supporter of the worst terror group in history.”

HODA MUTHANA CASE: IS ISIS BRIDE IN ‘SIGNIFICANT' DANGER IN SYRIAN REFUGEE CAMP?

Muthana was born in New Jersey and lived in Hoover, Ala., and claims she was radicalized online. A shy unassuming girl, she began living a double life on social media after being given a smart phone at 18.

In 2014, ISIS was ascendant, committing horrible atrocities, enslaving, raping women, beheading and stoning people, conquering vast areas of territory. It eventually ruled over 8 million people. Muthana, then 19, was was seduced and went to join them.

“I didn’t hate America” she told Fox News. “I didn’t hate anything. I just thought it was obligatory – when I started practicing I was very scared of the concept of hellfire. The Koran told me to go.”

She took some money earmarked for college, and got on a plane to Turkey, from where she was smuggled across the border to Syria. It was only then that she turned on a phone and called home – telling her mother she was with the terror group.

They have always condemned her move. She said she was ‘brainwashed.”

Once in the ISIS capital of Raqqa – she was held in a locked house for women until marrying. Her first husband, Suhan Rahman, was a well-known Australian fighter

She went on to marry two more men – all are now dead. She had a child who’s now 19 months old. In the early days of the caliphate, life was alright, she was able get food, and fully embrace the ideology of the caliphate – even though it committed such terror.

But as the U.S.-led coalition began to tighten the noose, life became hard, food started to dry up.  And when Presidnet Trump took office, he told the U.S. military to take the gloves off, at which point the airstrikes picked up and ISIS families were moved from one town to another. They eventually ended up in the town of Baghouz, where they made their last stand.

Today, every ISIS member I speak to says they regret their decision. But it seems clear they only changed their mind when it became clear their caliphate had been defeated.

Toronto man recreates da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’ on backyard ice rink

A Canadian man channeled his inner Leonardo da Vinci – and made shoveling up snow fun – to recreate his most famous work on his backyard ice rink.

Robert Greenfield of Toronto shot a time-lapse video as he went out to his small rink and created his version of the 'Mona Lisa'.

“This is not exactly a masterpiece, but I present the Snowna Lisa!” he wrote on Facebook. “Oh you think that’s bad? Wait till I tell you it should be hanging in the Igloovre.”

WINTER STORM BRINGING 'WIDESPREAD HAZARDOUS WEATHER' STRETCHING FROM MIDWEST TO NORTHEAST

The video, which he posted last week, quickly went viral.

Greenfield told Global Toronto that he just wanted to have some fun with the winter chore.

“I just thought it would be fun to treat the rink like a big Etch-a-Sketch and carve things in there,” he said. “I’ve done about a dozen. I’ve done the American flag, I’ve done the Canadian flag. I’ve done Snoopy.”

Buttigieg says he’s proud of his record as South Bend mayor

Democratic presidential contender Pete Buttigieg said Wednesday that he's proud of his record as mayor of South Bend, Indiana, but realizes some problems remain.

"This is not a rags-to-riches story," he told The Associated Press after a campaign stop in Marshalltown. "This is a story about transforming our trajectory."

His record overseeing the midsize Midwestern city of about 100,000 residents since 2012 has been scrutinized in recent weeks as his campaign has surged. While the median household income in South Bend has increased and the poverty rate has declined under his watch, Buttigieg's detractors have noted those figures lag statewide and national trends.

But on Wednesday, Buttigieg, 37, said that he was proud of his work eliminating blighted properties and improving unemployment in the city and that "things have come to be headed in the right direction" in South Bend.

"I'm not going around saying we've fixed every problem we've got, but I'm so proud of what we've done together," he said.

The campaign stop in Iowa drew a strong turnout of around 150 voters to the backyard of a Marshalltown home. Also in attendance were three religious protesters, two of whom had trailed Buttigieg during his previous day of campaigning in Iowa. On Wednesday, the duo dressed as Buttigieg and the devil and set up a loudspeaker in the adjacent alleyway to amplify their message.

Buttigieg, however, didn't acknowledge the protesters and spoke over them about issues such as veterans' health care and child care affordability. He also answered a question from a voter who identified herself as Christian about what he would do to protect religious freedom.

"We support everybody's right to practice their faith. We also make sure that we have a system that protects anybody from harming somebody else, and just because your religion made you do it doesn't mean it's OK," he said.

Following the event, Buttigieg shrugged off the protesters as par for the course for a candidate running for public office.

"I think when you're in politics, especially at this level, you're going to see the good, the bad, the ugly and the peculiar," he told reporters.

"Look, the next president is going to have to confront things a lot more challenging than being interrupted or having to talk over a little noise at an event," Buttigieg added. "So it may be irritating, but it's also part of the landscape."

Cole Hamels (1-0) limited the Brewers to two runs on six hits in six innings. He walked none and struck out five.

Lorenzo Cain, Ryan Braun and Eric Thames homered to lead the Brewers. Milwaukee had won its previous six in a row.

Diamondbacks 5, Red Sox 4

Carson Kelly drove in three runs and delivered a two-out, walk-off single as Arizona beat Boston in Phoenix.

Kelly lined a 1-1 pitch from Colten Brewer (0-1) to left field as Nick Ahmed had no trouble scoring from second. Kelly also had a two-run double in the Diamondbacks’ four-run second inning.

Andrew Benintendi had two of the six hits for Boston, which lost its third in a row. The Red Sox are 2-8, tied for the worst 10-game start in franchise history, according to ESPN.

Tigers 7, Royals 4

Rookie Christin Stewart blasted a grand slam with two outs in the seventh to help catapult host Detroit past Kansas City.

With the Tigers trailing 4-3, Stewart hit a 2-2 changeup from Royals reliever Wily Peralta that glanced off of the foul pole in right field and gave the Tigers a 7-4 lead.

Tigers closer Shane Greene earned his sixth save as Detroit won its fourth consecutive game. The Royals have dropped five straight since starting the year 2-0.

Mets 6, Nationals 5

Keon Broxton’s two-out RBI single capped a three-run eighth inning for New York, which came back to edge visiting Washington.

The Mets squandered leads of 1-0 and 3-1 and fell behind 5-3 in the top of the eighth, when Anthony Rendon hit a leadoff homer and Wilmer Difo hit a two-run, two-out shot, both off Jeurys Familia.

But the Mets wasted no time coming back in the bottom of the inning, when Pete Alonso and Robinson Cano opened the inning with home runs, the fourth and fifth of the day for New York, tying a single-game high at Citi Field. J.D. Davis hit solo homers in the fourth and sixth, and Michael Conforto had a solo homer in the sixth.

Pirates 6, Reds 5 (10 innings)

Dodgers 7, Rockies 2

Justin Turner had three hits and scored two runs, A.J. Pollock had two RBIs, Alex Verdugo homered and added an RBI triple, and Los Angeles defeated Colorado in Denver.

Dodgers starter Walker Buehler (1-0) allowed three hits, two walks and one run in five innings. He struck out four. Kenley Jansen threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his fourth save of the season for the Dodgers, who have won seven straight over the Rockies.

Colorado’s David Dahl had a solo homer and an RBI single among his three hits.

Twins 6, Phillies 2

Eddie Rosario hit a three-run homer, and Michael Pineda picked up his first victory in 21 months as Minnesota won at Philadelphia.

Pineda, making his second start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in July 2017, allowed two runs on four hits over five innings in picking up his first victory since June 30, 2017, when he was a member of the New York Yankees. He walked one and struck out five.

Max Kepler had two hits, including a home run, and Willians Astudillo also homered for the Twins. Rhys Hoskins homered and Bryce Harper had two hits for Philadelphia, which had its streak of six straight games of scoring five or more runs snapped.

Mariners 9, White Sox 2

Tim Beckham went 4-for-5 with a homer, a double and three RBIs, and Jay Bruce hit two solo homers as Seattle won at Chicago.

Mariners starter Mike Leake (2-0) pitched 6 1/3 solid innings. Leake allowed two runs — solo homers by Jose Abreu and Tim Anderson — on nine hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out six. Seattle relievers Brandon Brennan, Roenis Elias and Connor Sadzeck combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

White Sox starter Lucas Giolito (1-1) lasted just 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits. He walked four and struck out four.

Padres 6, Cardinals 4

Austin Hedges and Manny Machado each followed walks with two-run, eighth-inning homers as visiting San Diego rallied to defeat St. Louis. Cardinals pitchers issued 10 walks, eight of them from starter Michael Wacha.

Hedges’ first homer of the season followed an inning-opening walk by rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. Ian Kinsler drew a one-out walk ahead of Machado’s second homer with the Padres. Both right-handed hitters reached the second deck in left off pitches from left-hander Andrew Miller (0-1).

The Padres’ Eric Hosmer and the Cardinals’ Marcell Ozuna also homered in the game.

Giants 6, Rays 4

Brandon Belt hit a home run during a four-run fifth inning as San Francisco rallied past visiting Tampa Bay.

SEOUL (Reuters) – The world’s biggest smartphone maker, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, on Thursday said it had received “a few” reports of damage to the main display of samples of its upcoming foldable handset.

“We will thoroughly inspect these units in person to determine the cause of the matter,” Samsung said in a statement, noting that a limited number of early Galaxy Fold samples were provided to media for review.

It added that removal of a protective layer on the handset’s display might cause damage and that the company would deliver such information to customers clearly.

Samsung’s comments followed reviews by some U.S. journalists who reported their Galaxy Fold samples malfunctioned.

Serbian students rally over anti-govt protest detentions

Dozens of Serbian high school students have staged a sit-down protest demanding that authorities release a fellow student who was jailed during weekend anti-government protests in Serbia.

The students marched Monday from their school in downtown Belgrade toward the main police station in the Serbian capital, where they sat on the ground.

Authorities say they detained 18 people following incidents during demonstrations Saturday and Sunday against Serbia's populist President Aleksandar Vucic.

Protesters on Saturday burst into the state-TV building in Belgrade. More skirmishes with police took place Sunday when protesters surrounded the Serbian presidency during Vucic's press conference.

Protests against Vucic have been going on weekly for three months demanding democratic and media freedoms. Vucic has accused the protesters of violence, saying perpetrators will be punished.

Cyprus police on Friday widened their search for more victims of a suspected serial killer after the 35-year-old national guard captain told investigators he killed four more people that he previously admitted to on the small Mediterranean nation.

The count now has climbed to seven.

CYPRUS FEARS POSSIBLE SERIAL KILLER AFTER BODIES OF TWO WOMEN ARE DISCOVERED IN MINESHAFT

Authorities said they are focusing on a military firing range, a man-made lake and an abandoned mine about 20 miles west of the capital Nicosia.

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades expressed “deep sorrow and concern” at the slayings and said he shared the public’s revulsion at “murders that appear to have selectively targeted foreign women who are in our country to work.”

“Such instincts are contrary to our culture’s traditions and values,” he said in a statement from China, where he was on an official visit. He urged calm so police can complete their investigation.

The scale of the alleged crimes by a Cypriot National Guard captain has horrified the small nation of over a million people, where multiple killings are rare. Five British law enforcement officials — including a coroner, a psychiatrist and investigators who specialize in multiple homicides — have been dispatched to help with the investigation.

On Thursday, the 35-year-old suspect, who can’t yet be named because he hasn’t been formally charged, told investigators that he had killed four more people than he had previously admitted to. Police said the suspect will appear in court Saturday for another custody hearing.

Cypriot investigators and police officers search a flooded mineshaft where two female bodies were found, outside of Mitsero village, near the capital Nicosia, Cyprus, Monday, April 22, 2019. Police on the east Mediterranean island nation, along with the help of the fire service, are conducting the search Monday in the wake of last week's discovery of the bodies in the abandoned mineshaft and the disappearance of the six-year-old daughter of one of the victims.

The victims — all foreigners— include Marry Rose Tiburcio, 38, from the Philippines, whose bound body was found April 14 in a flooded mineshaft. She and her six-year-old daughter had been missing since May of last year.

The girl remains missing and authorities believe she was also slain by the suspect. Divers have entered the reservoir to search for her but have not found her body yet.

CYPRUS: GROUND NOT YET READY FOR PEACE TALKS RESUMPTION

Authorities tracked down the officer last week by scouring Tiburcio’s online messages.

Six days later, police discovered another body April 20 in the same mineshaft, identified by Cypriot media as 28-year-old Arian Palanas Lozano, also from the Philippines.

A third alleged victim, also of Filipino descent, is 31-year-old Maricar Valtez Arquiola, who had been missing since December 2017. The suspect initially denied killing Arquiola but reversed himself after a court hearing Thursday, a police official said.

The suspect on Thursday also pointed investigators to a military firing range, where they discovered another unidentified body, which according to the suspect belongs to a woman of either Nepalese or Indian descent.

SERIAL KILLER WHO MAY HAVE COMMITTED 90 MURDERS IS LINKED TO YET ANOTHER KILLING

Cypriot police are also looking for a Romanian mother and daughter. Cypriot media identified them as Livia Florentina Bunea, 36, and eight-year-old Elena Natalia Bunea, who are believed to have been missing since September 2016.

The man-made lake remains off-limits to a manned search because of high levels of toxic heavy metals from the copper pyrite mine, Fire Service Chief Marcos Trangolas said, adding that authorities will use other means to scour the lake.

Police chief Zacharias Chrysostomou said a three-member panel has been assigned to probe whether police followed all the correct protocol in recent missing persons cases.

According to the state-run Cyprus News Agency, an investigator had told the court at an earlier hearing that the suspect admitted to killing one woman he met online after having sex with her.

By James Davey

LONDON (Reuters) – With Sainsbury’s dream of creating Britain’s biggest supermarket group in tatters, its chastened CEO Mike Coupe needs to reassure investors he has the plan to arrest a sales decline when he presents annual results next week.

Britain’s competition regulator blocked Sainsbury’s 7.3 billion pound ($9.4 billion) takeover of Walmart’s Asda on Thursday, saying the deal would increase prices. Sainsbury’s shares fell 5 percent and are down 22 percent over the last three months.

For Sainsbury’s fourth quarter to March 9 analysts are on average forecasting a 1.6 percent fall in like-for-like sales, which would follow 1.1 percent decline over the Christmas period.

Monthly industry data from researcher Kantar has also shown Sainsbury’s as the weakest performer of the big four grocers this year and this month it lost its status as Britain’s No. 2 supermarket group by market share to Asda.

While Sainsbury’s has struggled, market leader Tesco has gained momentum, this month reporting a 34 percent jump in full year profit.

Prohibition of the deal was a major blow to Coupe, its architect and Sainsbury’s boss since 2014.

Martin Scicluna became Sainsbury’s chairman last month and when bedded-in may decide that if the group needs a major shake-up it is best carried out by a new leader.

Much will depend on the attitude of 22 percent shareholder the Qatar Investment Authority, which has so far declined to comment, as well as Coupe’s own appetite to continue after 15 years at the group.

THE RIGHT STRATEGY?

Coupe said on Thursday he was confident Sainsbury’s was pursuing the right strategy.

That was a clear indication that Wednesday’s results statement will not include radical changes to the group’s plans, such as a big margin reset — sacrificing profit to drive sales.

However, sources connected to Sainsbury’s said Coupe would likely acknowledge that more needs to be done on prices, so the supermarket business can better compete with its big four rivals – Tesco, Asda and No. 4 Morrisons – as well as German-owned discounters Aldi and Lidl.

Coupe’s strategy is based on differentiating Sainsbury’s food offer, growing its general merchandise, clothing business and bank, while investing in convenience and online channels.

Some analysts believe major change is needed.

HSBC analyst David McCarthy reckons Sainsbury’s needs a margin reset, should allocate more space for core lines and needs to drive better store standards. He said Sainsbury’s might consider closing down space in some of its larger stores and reducing its non-food offer.

For the full 2018-19 year analysts are on average forecasting a pretax profit of 626 million pounds, up from 589 million pounds in 2017-18 – a second straight year of profit growth. A full year dividend of 10.5 pence per share is forecast versus 10.2 pence last time.

Bank and lawyer fees related to the proposed combination with Asda were 17 million pounds in the first half and have reportedly jumped to around 50 million pounds.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey rejected demands from a secular group to remove posts on social media where he sent Easter greetings and cited a Bible verse, offering to provide copies of the Constitution to his critics.

Ducey, who’s a practicing Catholic, has been bombarded with calls from Secular Communities for Arizona to remove the post, which included a cross, a Bible verse, and the phrase, “He is risen.”

ARIZONA’S GOP GOVERNOR WAGING WAR AGAINST OCCUPATIONAL LICENSING LAWS

The group argued the posts crossed a line into government sponsorship of religious messages and was unconstitutional.

The governor fired back at the group, saying in a tweet that he will never remove the posts or other religious ones.

“We won’t be removing this post. Ever. Nor will we be removing our posts for Christmas, Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah, Palm Sunday, Passover or any other religious holiday,” he tweeted. “We support the First Amendment, and are happy to provide copies of the Constitution to anyone who hasn’t read it.”

Dianne Post, an attorney for the secular group, told the Arizona Republic “elected officials should not use their government position and government property to promote their religious views.”

LICENSE REQUIRED TO REPAIR DOORS? REGS SPARK HEATED DEBATE IN ARIZONA

She added the courts have repeatedly “struck down symbolism that unites government with religion,” adding that Ducey’s office must “represent and protect the rights of all residents of Arizona, including those who do not believe in a monotheistic God or any gods at all.”

Many congratulated Ducey for not backing down amid the pressure, though some Facebook users sided with the secular group and criticized the governor on his original post.

“Why do you use a government platform to bring up your personal religion?” asked one person. “Are there no citizens in your jurisdiction that believe differently from you?”

Another stipulated that the post was somewhat discriminatory. “Great sensitivity, Doug. That’s the last time this Jew votes for you,” one person wrote.

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada posted a budget surplus in the first 11 months of the 2018/19 fiscal year compared to a deficit the year earlier as revenues increased mostly on higher tax incomes, the finance department said on Friday.

The surplus for April-February was C$3.1 billion, compared to a deficit of C$6 billion in the same 2017/18 period. Revenues climbed by 8.5 percent, mainly due to higher tax receipts, while program expenses rose by 4.8 percent.

The surplus for February was C$4.3 billion compared with C$2.8 billion in February 2018. Revenues jumped by 12.2 percent while program expenses posted a more modest 6.9 percent gain.

Last month, the Liberals unveiled their new budget, projecting a C$14.9 billion deficit in 2018/19, with the deficit rising to C$19.8 billion in fiscal 2019/20.

President Trump said Friday he would beat Joe Biden “easily” in the 2020 presidential election, suggesting the former vice president could not have enough “energy” to hold the post—taking an apparent swipe at his age.

The president, departing the White House, was asked about Biden’s entrance into the Democratic primary field. Biden announced his presidential bid early Thursday morning, marking his third attempt at the White House.

JOE BIDEN OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES 2020 PRESIDENTIAL BID

“I think we’d beat him easily,” Trump told reporters Friday.

Trump, 72, said he feels “young” and is ready for 2020, and another term for his administration.

“I feel like a young man. I am a young, vibrant man,” Trump said. “I look at Joe, I don’t know about him.”

The president’s comments seemingly were a shot at the age of Biden, who is 76.

BIDEN ENTERS WHITE HOUSE RACE WITHOUT OBAMA’S ENDORSEMENT

“I would never say anyone’s too old,” Trump said. “I know they’re all making me look very young both in terms of age and in terms of energy.”

Biden became the 20th candidate to join the crowded Democratic primary field Thursday. But Biden is not the oldest in the pack. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is 77 and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., is 69.

Should Trump be re-elected, he would be 74 on Jan. 20, 2021—Inauguration Day. Should the presidency go to one of the elder Democrats in the field—Biden would be 78; Sanders would be 79; and Warren would be 71.

Meanwhile, in a wide-ranging interview on “Hannity” Thursday night, Trump dismissed Biden’s candidacy, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe,” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Trump also said that while the former vice president has name recognition, he won’t “be able to do the job.”
