Sarah Sanders spars with CNN’s Jim Acosta over anti-Semitism allegations

Sarah Sanders sparred with CNN’s Jim Acosta during the first White House press briefing in 42 days on Monday.

The exchange was prompted after NBC’s Hallie Jackson initially asked Sanders if Trump truly believes that “Democrats hate Jews,” following Trump's declaration last week that Democrats are "anti-Israel" and "anti-Jewish." The White House press secretary declined to answer directly, noting that the president has laid out his position on the matter in the past.

TRUMP SCOLDS CNN’S JIM ACOSTA, AS ANGEL MOMS CONFRONT REPORTER IN ROSE GARDEN: ‘YOU HAVE AN AGENDA’

“Democrats have had a number of opportunities to condemn specific comments and have refused to do that,” Sanders said, referring to the ongoing controversy surrounding Rep. Ilhan Omar for making allegedly anti-Semitic remarks.

Sanders eventually called on Acosta, whom she has feuded with on a regular basis during past press briefings.

CNN’s chief White House correspondent opened with a question about whether Trump tried to block AT&T’s merger with Time Warner. After Sanders said she was not aware of any such conversation, Acosta circled back to the situation with “Democrats and Jewish people,” asking if Trump’s rhetoric is “beneath” the American people.

CNN’S JIM ACOSTA MOCKED FOR ACCIDENTALLY PROVING THAT BORDER WALLS WORK

“Do you think that the president has thought, at all, going into the 2020 campaign that the rhetoric just needs to be lowered? Whether it’s talking about Democrats, the media, immigrants, or should we just plan on hearing the president use the same kind of language that we heard in 2016 and all through the first couple years of this administration?” Acosta asked.

Sanders responded that it’s a shame Democrats won’t come together and condemn anti-Semitic remarks.

“I think that is a great shame,” Sanders said. “The president has been clear on what his position is, certainly what his support is for the people and the community of Israel.”

Acosta then asked if it “drags down the rhetoric of a debate” when someone says something that is “patently untrue.” Sanders tried to answer, and the CNN correspondent continued to talk over her.

KELLYANNE CONWAY EMBARRASSES CNN’S JIM ACOSTA DURING HEATED EXCHANGE: 'YOU'RE SUCH A SMARTA--'

“Democrats don’t hate Jewish people, that’s just silly,” Acosta said. “It’s not true.”

Sanders told Acosta that Democrats should call out their members by name if they don’t want to be aligned with anti-Semitic rhetoric. Acosta tried to respond, but Sanders cut him off.

“Sorry, Jim,” she said before calling on the next reporter.

Acosta asked his question anyway, reminding Sanders that Trump once said there were “very fine people” on both sides of the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

“Essentially suggesting that there were very fine people in the Nazis,” Acosta said.

TRUMP SLAMS CNN’S ACOSTA FOR PRESS CONFERENCE PERFORMANCE: ‘YOU ARE A RUDE, TERRIBLE PERSON’

Sanders fired back, “That’s not at all what the president was stating.”

“The president has been incredibly clear in consistently and repeatedly condemning hatred, bigotry and racism in all of its forms, whether it’s in America or anywhere else. To say otherwise is simply untrue,” Sanders said.

Last year, Acosta was briefly banned from the White House after he engaged in a contentious back-and-forth with Trump during a Nov. 7 press conference. During the now-infamous moment, Acosta refused to pass the microphone to a female White House aide.

Acosta’s press pass was restored on Nov. 19 after CNN argued that keeping him out of the White House violated the network and Acosta’s First and Fifth Amendment rights. To coincide with Acosta being allowed to return to the White House, Sanders implemented a series of rules to govern White House press conferences going forward.

Last month, Acosta was scolded by Trump during a Rose Garden announcement and was subsequently confronted by angel moms in attendance.

Tucker Carlson Beats CNN’s Entire Line-Up Combined, So Now CNN Targets His Advertisers

After Tucker Carlson outperformed CNN’s entire prime time line-up combined, CNN published an article attacking his advertisers.

The Fox News host achieved 3,475,000 total viewers last week, beating CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo, who could only muster 2,474,000 viewers between the three of them.

CNN responded with an article lauding the claim that “Carlson’s commercial breaks have had only a smattering of ads from lesser-known brands.”

According to CNN, this is because the Fox News host, “made racist remarks on immigrants in December,” even though he didn’t and was merely making the factual observation that migrant caravans often leave a trail of litter behind them.

CNN then amplified Mimi Chakravorti, the executive director at the branding firm Landor, who basically threatened advertisers that if they continued to appear alongside Tucker’s show, they would be in violation of ‘the great awokening’ – in other words, the increasingly shrinking number of viewpoints that remain acceptable and politically correct to the establishment.

“If you stay you’re saying your brand is aligned with Tucker Carlson — past and present, if you leave, you’re saying you’re not aligned with Tucker’s views,” warned Chakravorti.

This is why they hate Tucker Carlson.

His message resonates with an increasing number of Americans and all CNN can do in response is to abuse their platform by lobbying for boycotts of his advertisers.

Their own tweet attacking Tucker as “racist” got ratioed, with the vast majority of respondents siding with Carlson.

CNN isn’t a media company anymore, it’s an activist organization which now devotes a huge chunk of its resources to silencing its competition.

Geraldo Rivera has ‘little doubt’ Obama DOJ spied on Trump; dismisses ‘disingenuous’ Comey

Geraldo Rivera has “little doubt” the Obama Justice Department spied on the Trump campaign and “made absolutely probable all of the trauma we’ve gone through with this whole Russia thing.”

Speaking on Fox & Friends, Rivera, Fox News’s roaming correspondent-at-large, hailed William Barr as an “impeccable superb professional” after the Attorney General’s testimony this week that “spying did occur” against the 2016 campaign.

Barr’s comments have since been questioned by James Comey, the former FBI Director, as well as Democrats and the media. Comey said during a cybersecurity conference in California Thursday that he had “never thought of” electronic surveillance as “spying”.

Rivera dismissed Comey’s latest comments as “one of the most disingenuous interviews I have heard recently”.

COMEY SCOFFS AT BARR TESTIMONY, CLAIMS 'SURVEILLANCE' IS NOT 'SPYING'

“To say that electronic surveillance and spying are different, what is the exact difference? Is it the method? There is no doubt, I believe they did wiretap…Trump's office here in New York,” Rivera said. “I believe that they turned informants in the way they twisted arms to get people in trouble, get them conflicted. So they had to snitch. Anything they knew about the president.

“[George] Papadopoulos, Carter Page, you have a situation. Poor Michael Flynn, they twisted these people, they got them in the perjury trap, they had them by the short hairs, got them to cooperate, and guess what? There was still no Russian collusion. But there is no doubt, to make a fine distinction between surveillance and spying is, I think, deflecting attention from what is going on," he said.

Despite the backlash from the likes of Comey and Democrats over Barr’s testimony, he appeared to refer to intelligence collection that already has been widely reported and confirmed.

Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants against former Trump campaign aide Carter Page are currently the subject of a Justice Department inspector general investigation looking at potential misconduct in the issuance of those warrants. That review also reportedly is scrutinizing the role of an FBI informant who had contacts with Trump advisers in the early stages of the Russia investigation.

Rivera continued: “President Trump, President-elect Trump, was totally paranoid. That doesn't mean he did not have people spying on him. And as it turns out, everything he said basically is correct.

BARR HAMMERED FOR STATING 'SPYING DID OCCUR', DESPITE CONFIRMATION OF TRUMP TEAM SURVEILLANCE

“They went after him full bore… It is not overstating to say 'spying'. Maybe it’s overstating to say there was an attempted coup. But they were talking about the 25th Amendment, they were talking about high management getting cabinet-level officials to declare the president non-compos mentis, and to take over.

“I mean this was very, very serious. I think the blowback from this is gonna be way bigger than Russia gate was. The collusion illusion is going to dim into history as we find out how a group of non-elected officials try to overthrow the president of the United States.”

Rivera also reserved a few words for Julian Assange, who was arrested in London Thursday after spending years holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy.

“Julian Assange, to me, is an anti-American slimeball whose every action was designed to hurt the United States of America. He did it with Chelsea Manning in the spying in 2010, 2011, when he released those videos of civilian casualties from American airstrikes.”

He added: “I have nothing but contempt for Julian Assange and I hope that justice finally comes calling.”

Study: ‘Phone Addicts’ Have Become the New Drunk Drivers

A new study has concluded phone addicts are the new drunk drivers.

The study was conducted by Zendrive and detailed in a report by Axios.

"Last year, 6,227 pedestrians lost their lives to the hands of drivers who were most likely driving under the influence of a smartphone," the study said. "On a national level, drivers are 10 percent more distracted this year than last. And from out under the shadows, phone addicts have positioned themselves as public enemy number one, replacing drunk drivers as the ultimate threat on public roads."

It noted "phone addicts are glued to their phones, so they are more districted, more dangerous and more likely to cause a crash."

It found "phone addicts" actively ignore the road 28% of the time they are driving and are on the road 1.5 more times than the general population.

"We found that while people are almost universally aware that distracted driving is incredibly dangerous, those same people largely dismiss their own contributions to the problem," Zendrive CEO Jonathan Matus told Axios. "Almost all our respondents thought they were safe drivers, but were willing to admit that they use their phones in the car all the time, signaling a cognitive disconnect between knowing the risks and taking action."

2nd South Dakota diocese publishes list of accused priests

A second South Dakota diocese has released the names of clergy members with substantiated allegations of sexual abuse against a minor.

The Sioux Falls Diocese posted the names of 11 clergy members on its website Wednesday. The website says the allegations were substantiated by law enforcement or the diocese, or in some cases by both. Nine of the priests are dead.

A letter posted on the website by Bishop Paul Swain says he hopes the list will encourage any victim who has been harmed to report it to authorities or the diocese. Swain says he wants bishops from around the country to toughen accountability measures when they hold their semi-annual meeting in June.

The Rapid City Diocese last week published a list of 21 priests credibly accused of sexual abuse.

(Reuters) – Barrick Gold Corp has withdrawn its proposal to buy Newmont Mining Corp, the companies said on Monday, ending a hostile takeover effort that sought to unite the world’s two biggest gold producers.

Newmont and Barrick have instead signed an agreement to create a joint venture for their mining operations in Nevada, the companies said.

Barrick launched an $18 billion takeover offer for Newmont last month, which was rejected by Newmont. The companies have been embroiled in a bitter war of words over the deal.

Last week, top Barrick shareholders urged the gold miner to strike an agreement for the Nevada operations. Both companies agreed to combine their Nevada assets to cut costs, but were so far unable to hammer out a solution on how it should be done.

The companies said on Monday Barrick will operate the joint venture and will be the majority owner, with 61.5 percent stake.

“We are finally taking down the fences to operate Nevada as a single entity in order to deliver full value to both sets of shareholders,” Barrick Chief Executive Officer Mark Bristow said in a statement.

A Florida measure that would ban sanctuary cities is set for a vote Friday in the state’s Senate after clearing its first hurdle earlier this week.

The bill would effectively make it against the law for Florida’s police departments to refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials.

“The Governor may initiate judicial proceedings in the name of the state against such officers to enforce compliance,” a draft version of the Senate bill reads.

A House version of the bill, which passed by a 69-47 vote Wednesday, adds that non-complying officials could be suspended or removed from office and face fines of up to $5,000 per day. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign off on the measure, although it’s not clear which version.

LAWRENCE JONES: NEEDLES, DRUG USE AND HUMAN WASTE ARE THE NEW NORMAL IN SAN FRANCISCO

Florida is home to 775,000 illegal immigrants out of 10.7 million present in the United States, ranking the state third among all states.

Nine states — Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas — already have enacted state laws requiring law enforcement to comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Florida doesn’t have sanctuary cities like the ones in California and other states. But Republican lawmakers say a handful of their municipalities — including Orlando and West Palm Beach – are acting as “pseudo-sanctuary” cities, because they prevent law enforcement officials from asking about immigration status when they make arrests.

“There are still people here in the state of Florida, police chiefs that are just refusing to contact ICE, refusing to detain somebody that they know is here illegally,” Florida Republican Rep. Blaise Ingoglia said earlier this month. “So while the actual county municipality doesn’t have an actual adopted policy, they still have people in power within their sheriff’s department or police department that refuse to do it anyway.”

Florida’s Democratic Party has blasted the anti-Sanctuary measures, while the Miami-Dade Police Department says it should be up to federal authorities to handle immigration-related matters.

“House Republicans today sold out their communities to Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis by passing this xenophobic and discriminatory bill,” the state’s Democratic Party said Wednesday after the House passed their version of the bill. “It’s abhorrent that Republican members who represent immigrant communities are now turning their backs on their constituents and jeopardizing their safety.

“Florida has long stood as a beacon for immigrant communities — and today Republicans did the best they could to destroy that reputation,” they added.

MADRID (Reuters) – Spain’s Vox party, aligned to a broader far-right movement emerging across Europe, has become the focus of speculation about last minute shifts in voting intentions since official polling for Sunday’s national election ended four days ago.

No single party is anywhere near securing a majority, and chances of a deadlocked parliament and a second election are high.

Leaders of the five parties vying for a role in government get final chances to pitch for power at rallies on Friday evening, before a campaign characterized by appeals to voters’ hearts rather than wallets ends at midnight.

By tradition, the final day before a Spanish election is politics-free.

Two main prizes are still up for grabs in the home straight. One concerns which of the two rival left and right multi-party blocs gets more votes.

The other is whether Vox could challenge the mainstream conservative PP for leadership of the latter bloc, which media outlets with access to unofficial soundings taken since Monday suggest could be starting to happen.

The right’s loose three-party alliance is led by the PP, the traditional conservative party that has alternated in office with outgoing Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s Socialists since Spain’s return to democracy in the 1970s.

The PP stands at around 20 percent, with center-right Ciudadanos near 14 percent and Vox around 11 percent, according to a final poll of polls in daily El Pais published on Monday.

Since then, however, interest in Vox – which will become the first far-right party to sit in parliament since 1982 – has snowballed.

It was founded in 2013, part of a broader anti-establishment, far-right movement that has also spread across – among others – Italy, France and Germany.

While it is careful to distance itself from the ideology of late dictator Francisco Franco, Vox’s signature policies include repealing laws banning Franco-era symbols and on gender-based violence, and shifting power away from Spain’s regional governments.

TRENDING

According to a Google trends graphic, Vox has generated more than three times more search inquiries than any other Spanish political party in the past week.

Reasons could include a groundswell of vocal activist support at Vox rallies in Madrid and Valencia, and its exclusion from two televised debates between the main party leaders, on the grounds of it having no deputies yet in parliament.

Conservative daily La Vanguardia called its enforced absence from Monday’s and Tuesday’s debates “a gift from heaven”, while left-wing Eldiario.es suggested the PP was haemorrhaging votes to Vox in rural areas.

Ignacio Jurado, politics lecturer at the University of York, agreed the main source of additional Vox votes would be disaffected PP supporters, and called the debate ban – whose impact he said was unclear – wrong.

“This is a party polling over 10 percent and there are people interested in what it says. So we lose more than we win in not having them (in the debates),” he said

For Jose Fernandez-Albertos, political scientist at Spanish National Research Council CSIC, Vox is enjoying the novelty effect that propelled then new, left-wing arrival Podemos to 20 percent of the vote in 2015.

“While it’s unclear how to interpret the (Google) data, what we do know is that it’s better to be popular and to be a newcomer, and that Vox will benefit in some form,” he said.

For now, the chances of Vox taking a major role in government remain slim, however.

The El Pais survey put the Socialists on around 30 percent, making them the frontrunners and likely to form a leftist bloc with Podemos, back down at around 14 percent.

The unofficial soundings suggest little change in the two parties’ combined vote, or the total vote of the rightist bloc.

That makes it unlikely that either bloc will win a majority on Sunday, triggering horse-trading with smaller parties favoring Catalan independence – the single most polarizing issues during campaigning – that could easily collapse into fresh elections.

The Amish population in Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County is continuing to grow each year, despite the encroachment of urban sprawl on their communities.

The U.S. Census Bureau says the county added about 2,500 people in 2018. LNP reports that about 1,000 of them were Amish.

Elizabethtown College researchers say Lancaster County’s Amish population reached 33,143 in 2018, up 3.2% from the previous year.

The Amish accounted for about 41% of the county’s overall population growth last year.

Some experts are concerned that a planned 75-acre (30-hectare) housing and commercial project will make it more difficult for the county to accommodate the Amish.

Donald Kraybill, an authority on Amish culture, told Manheim Township commissioners this week that some in the community are worried about the development and the increased traffic it would bring.

Fox News correspondent Geraldo Rivera has warned that if Democratic 2020 presidential candidates don’t take the crisis at the border seriously, they’ll do so at their own risk.

Speaking with “Fox & Friends” hosts on Friday morning, Rivera discussed the influx of candidates entering the race, including former Vice President Joe Biden, and gave an update on the newest developments at the border.

“If [Democrats] don’t take it seriously they ignore it at their peril,” Rivera said.

He went on to discuss the fact that Mexico is experiencing the same problems dealing with volumes of people at the border as the United States is. Processing facilities, as many have argued, are understaffed and underresourced, resulting in conditions that have been controversial.

“It is very, very difficult when hundreds and hundreds become thousands and thousands ultimately become tens of it is very difficult to have an orderly system,” he said.

Rivera asserted his opinion that the United States could lessen the influx of migrants coming into the country by investing in the development of Central American countries, where many are fleeing from violence and economic instability.

“I believe, as I have said before on this program, that we have to stop the source of the migrant explosion, by a comprehensive system of political and economic reform in Central America where people have the incentive to stay home,” Rivera said.

“I think we have help Mexico with its infrastructure. Mexico has a moral burden, as the president made very clear, not to let unchecked herds of desperate people flow through 2,000 miles of Mexican territory to get our southern border.”

Rivera also brought up President Trump’s controversial comments about Mexican immigrants during his campaign in 2016.

The Fox News correspondent said that having been so excited about Trump’s campaign, the comments made him feel “deflated” as a Hispanic American.

However, as the crisis at the border has accelerated over the last few years, Rivera argued that ultimately, the president’s comments weren’t incorrect.

“He is now in a position where he can justly say I was right, that the that the anarchy at the border doesn’t serve anybody,” Rivera said. “Maybe he said it in a language I felt was a little rough and insensitive, but there is no doubt.”
