Kansas woman buys out shoe store for Nebraska flood victims

A Kansas woman donated 204 pairs of shoes to Nebraska flood victims after buying everything that was left at a closing Payless store.

The Hays Post reports the shoes were part of a flood relief shipment taken to farmers in Nebraska by Fort Hays State's agriculture sorority, Sigma Alpha, during the weekend.

A graduate of Fort Hays State, Addy Tritt, said she wanted to help others because so many people have helped her in the past.

When the price at a Hays store dropped to $1 per pair, Tritt negotiated with the business to buy the remaining shoes for $100.

They included 162 pairs of baby shoes and two pairs of men's shoes. The rest were women's shoes.

The retail price of the shoes would have been more than $6,000.

March 18, 2019

LONDON (Reuters) – Chemicals giant Ineos, owned by Britain’s richest man Jim Ratcliffe, is set to become the new sponsor of cycling’s Tour de France-winning Team Sky, according to media reports on Monday.

Broadcaster Sky announced last December that it would end its involvement in the British-based team and professional cycling after the 2019 season.

The hugely successful team, founded in 2010 with the ambitious goal of securing a first Tour de France victory by a British cyclist within five years, have won eight Grand Tours since 2012.

Bradley Wiggins, four times winner Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas have all triumphed on the Tour de France with Sky. Froome also won the Vuelta a Espana and Giro d’Italia.

The BBC said the team would be renamed Team Ineos.

Ratcliffe, chief executive of the country’s largest private company, topped last year’s Sunday Times rich list with a net worth of 21 billion pounds ($27.81 billion).

Wiggins said the deal, if confirmed, could be an ideal partnership and bring peace of mind to the cast of top riders.

“There are a lot of big names in that team who would potentially have had to look for new sponsors and there’s limited places now with the amount of teams that have folded,” Wiggins said on his Eurosport show.

“I’m sure if that’s true and it all comes off, it’s signed and the money’s in the bank then I think that’ll be a big weight off the like of Geraint, Froome’s shoulders before they go into the Grand Tours really.”

Wiggins said team principal Dave Brailsford would want to retain control.

“It’s an ideal situation for Dave because he can continue running out this team with all his plans and philosophies and he’s answerable, you’d imagine, to one man.”

Iowa man who went missing in Canyonlands National Park found dead

An Iowa man who vanished while he was hiking in Canyonlands National Park in Utah was found dead Friday after an apparent fall, officials said.

Jonathan Hogue, 33, a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Iowa, was reported missing last Tuesday, sparking a dayslong search until crews found his body Friday at the base of the Green River Overlook.

Authorities believe Hogue fell 500 feet to his death, although an investigation is still being conducted.

Hogue’s car was discovered Sunday near the overlook in Canyonlands National Park’s Island in the Sky section. Officials said Hogue did not leave his trip itinerary with anyone.

Trump receptive to Graham's call for 2nd special counsel to review Russia probe origins, source says

President Trump was enthusiastic about the idea of appointing a second special counsel to review the origins of the Russia investigation when it came up during a meeting Tuesday with Republican senators, a source familiar with the discussions told Fox News.

The president was specifically reacting to GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham's call for another special counsel as well as the senator's vow to look into issues like the alleged abuse of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act at the dawn of the Russia probe. The source told Fox News that the president seemed excited about that course during a Senate GOP lunch on Capitol Hill, which Graham and other senators attended.

The topic of a new special counsel resurfaced this week when Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Graham, R-S.C., urged Attorney General Bill Barr to appoint someone to look into alleged abuses in the case following the conclusion of Robert Mueller's investigation -- which did not uncover evidence of a Trump-Russia conspiracy in 2016, according to Barr's summary.

LINDSEY GRAHAM WILL PROBE ALLEGED FISA ABUSES AT FBI, CALLS ON BARR TO APPOINT NEW SPECIAL COUNSEL

Graham said that due to “the emotional nature of this,” he believed a new appointment was necessary.

“I’d like to find somebody, like a Mr. Mueller, that can look into what happened with the FISA warrants, the counterintelligence investigation. Am I right to be concerned? It seems pretty bad on its face—but there are some people that are never going to accept the Mueller report, but by any reasonable standard, Mueller thoroughly investigated the Trump campaign. You cannot say that about the other side of the story,” Graham told reporters Monday.

“I hope Mr. Barr will appoint somebody outside the current system to look into these allegations, somebody we all trust, and let them do what Mueller did,” he continued, adding that he'd been calling for the appointment of a second special counsel since 2017 to investigate “whether or not a counterintelligence investigation was opened as a back door to spy on the Trump campaign.”

The source told Fox News that the president also was excited about Graham’s plans to conduct a “deep dive” into the “other side of the story,” referring to the early phase of the Russia investigation at the Justice Department and the FBI.

BULK OF MUELLER CASES AGAINST TRUMP ASSOCIATES BASED ON FALSE STATEMENTS

“Was it a ruse to get into the Trump campaign?” Graham asked Monday. “I don’t know, but I’m going to try to find out.”

Graham said he wanted answers on how much money the Democrats paid research firm Fusion GPS to commission the dossier, or if the contents of the dossier ever were verified. Republicans also have long scrutinized the decision to surveil Trump adviser Carter Page in 2016, based in part on dossier allegations.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement after Tuesday's meeting: “Today, President Trump delivered remarks at the Senate Republican Policy Lunch and thanked the members for their support and past votes, addressed his complete and total vindication in the Mueller investigation, the Republican Party helping all Americans as ‘The Party of Healthcare,’ the defeat of ISIS in Syria and rebuilding the military.”

After the release of the Mueller report, the president touted the findings and again stated the need for an investigation of “the other side.”

“This was an illegal takedown that failed. And, hopefully, somebody’s going to be looking at the other side,” Trump said Monday. “So, it’s complete exoneration. No collusion, no obstruction.”

The attorney general on Sunday released a summary of Mueller’s findings, revealing that the special counsel found no evidence of collusion between members of, or anyone associated with, the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential election.

Graham vowed to call Barr to testify on the Mueller report but suggested he also could call on Justice Department official Bruce Ohr and former FBI Director James Comey to appear before his committee.

Former Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, first launched investigations into alleged abuses or wrongdoing at the Justice Department related to the Russia investigation in 2017. A source close to Grassley told Fox News on Wednesday that Grassley expected the committee to move forward with the probes and follow through with many of the inquiries. The source also said Grassley hoped the committee had the ability to investigate those matters.

It's not clear whether Barr would even entertain the idea of a second special counsel -- something Trump's closest allies in Congress have long demanded. Trump's lawyers were even calling for such an appointment as far back as late 2017.

Under political pressure, then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions tasked U.S. Attorney John Huber with leading a review into a range of controversies involving Justice Department and FBI conduct, including those concerning Hillary Clinton. At the time, Sessions did not agree to appoint a second special counsel.

Giuliani: Manafort Sentence Fair, Charge Cohen With Perjury

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani said Friday that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's sentence is fair and Michael Cohen should face prosecution for perjury.

On Hill.TV, Giuliani described Manafort's 47-month sentence as "justice," and said, "The fact is that if we take out their desire to try to crack him, to try to get him to cooperate, this is a tax evasion case. Big money, no question about that."

"The reality is, a first-time tax offender, most often you don't put them in jail. The number here is big enough so that it warrants a jail sentence," he continued. "The judge was right on target."

"What we have on the other side are completely overzealous prosecutors. They'd put this man in solitary confinement for six, seven months," Giuliani added. "They raided his home in the morning like this was John Gotti. He's not dangerous to anybody. He committed a white collar crime."

The former New York City mayor added if Cohen is not prosecuted for allegedly committing perjury, "it would be a complete outrage after what they did to [former National Security Adviser Michael] Flynn and a bunch of other people."

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
