Rep. Eric Swalwell Enters Dem Race for President

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., revealed Monday he is joining the growing field of Democrats running for president.

Swalwell made the announcement during a taping of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," which will air Monday evening. The show posted a video on Twitter of Swalwell making the news.

Swalwell began the segment by explaining how he's traveled the country and talked to regular Americans about the challenges they face and the frustrations they have with elected officials.

"I see a country in quicksand, unable to solve problems and threats from abroad, unable to make life better for people here at home. Nothing gets done," he said.

"I'm ready to solve these problems. I'm running for president of the United States."

The crowd then erupted in applause, to which Swalwell replied, "It's official. Boy, did it feel good to say that."

Swalwell has been outspoken about his disagreement with Republicans on many issues and his belief that President Donald Trump worked with Russia to defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.

Swalwell was mulling over a presidential run and indicated last month that if he were to run, his top campaign issues would be healthcare and racial equality.

Freshman guard DeVante Jones pumped in a game-high 32 points Monday night as Coastal Carolina routed West Virginia 109-91 in the CBI quarterfinals at WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.

Jones, who was 10 of 15 from the field and 6 of 8 on 3-pointers, added seven rebounds and seven assists for the Chanticleers (17-16). Tommy Burton added 16 points, Zac Cuthbertson scored 15 to go along with eight boards, and Ebrima Dibba contributed 14. Ajay Sanders and Tyrell Gumbs-Frater each chipped in 11 points.

Six players scored in double figures for the Mountaineers, which ended a disappointing season with a 15-21 record. Lamont West and Emmitt Matthews each scored 21 points to lead the way. Chase Harler added 15 points, while Jermaine Haley finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan McCabe and Derek Culver chipped in 11 points apiece.

Coastal Carolina led for more than 36 minutes, pulling away late in the first half with a barrage of 3-point shots. Jones and Sanders each drained 3s to spark a spurt that gave the Chants a 50-36 halftime lead. They were 7 of 16 from the arc in the half, a stark contrast to West Virginia’s 4 of 18 marksmanship.

It got no better for the Mountaineers after halftime. Coastal Carolina scored on its first 13 possessions of the half to turn the game into a laugher. When Jones sank a 3-ball with 15:21 left to increase the margin to 69-47, the only question seemed to be when the Chants would reach 100 points.

The answer came with 2:58 remaining when Cuthbertson converted a layup to give Coastal Carolina a 100-79 advantage. It was the first time in coach Bob Huggins’ 421 games at West Virginia that one of his teams allowed 100 points.

The Chants finished the night shooting 58.1 percent from the field, including a blistering 26 of 39 in the second half. They also made 13 of 28 from the 3-point line.

Coastal Carolina advances to the CBI semifinals on Wednesday night against an opponent to be determined.

Central Banks Worldwide Abandoning Dollar

We’ve been following a number of central banks that have been buying gold recently, specifically the Russians and Chinese. But these two central banks aren’t alone. In fact, central bank gold-buying has surged over the last couple of years. What’s behind this trend?

In total, the world’s central banks accumulated 651.5 tons of gold last year. The World Gold Council noted that 2018 marked the highest level of annual net central bank gold purchases since the suspension of dollar convertibility into gold in 1971, and the second highest annual total on record. Russia was the leading purchaser of the yellow metal in 2018. Central banks in Turkey and Kazakhstan were also big buyers. We even saw increases in gold reserves from two EU banks – Hungary and Poland.

As we’ve been saying, these banks are seeking to minimize their exposure to US dollars. A recent article in The Street came to the same conclusion in rather colorful terms.

“There was a point in the early 1990s when lunchtime London wine tipplers above a certain pay-grade would boast of being in the ABC club: ‘anything but Chardonnay.’ Now it seems central bank reserve managers have founded a rather less bibulous fraternity of their own, the ABD club: “anything but (US) dollars.” A snobbish revulsion to a grape that produces the finest white burgundies was largely pretentious. A reticence among reserve managers to increase US dollar exposure, on the other hand, can be viewed as economically rational. One big beneficiary has been gold.”

It’s pretty clear why countries like Russia and China would want to minimize exposure to the greenback given the United States’ propensity to weaponize the dollar. The fact that the primary system for facilitating monetary transactions globally uses the dollar.

The globalists have chosen China as the country that will lead the way into humanity’s future. Alex Jones breaks down how a one-sided deal made 50 years ago puts China in the driver’s seat.

SWIFT stands for the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication. The system enables financial institutions to send and receive information about financial transactions in a secure, standardized environment. Since the dollar is the world reserve currency, SWIFT facilitates the international dollar system.

SWIFT give the US a great deal of leverage over other countries. The US has used the system as a stick before. In 2014 and 2015, it blocked several Russian banks from SWIFT as relations between the two countries deteriorated. Last fall, the US threatened to lock China out of the dollar system if it didn’t follow UN sanctions on North Korea.

The Street pointed out a more recent example of US bullying.

“Volkswagon, Europe’s biggest carmaker, has been told to close its business in Iran due to US sanctions if it wants to continue to doing business in the US or accessing US financial markets. Volkswagen felt compelled to comply despite this being at odds with the view of the German government and the broader European Union.”

As The Street article points out, due to the dollar’s status as the reserve currency, the US also enjoys the “exorbitant privilege” of a constant demand for its currency. This enables the US to finance itself cheaply in global markets.

Interestingly, the use of the dollar in global trade is dropping. It currently makes up about 40% of SWIFT transactions. This is modestly lower than the peak in 2014.

There are also a growing number of efforts to circumvent the dollar system. The Russians have developed an alternative payment system that has reportedly surpassed SWIFT in popularity within the country. According to the Central Bank of Russia, 416 Russian companies and government organizations had joined the System for Transfer of Financial Messages (SPFS) as of September. And in September 2018, the EU announced plans to develop a special payment channel to circumvent US economic sanctions and facilitate trade with Iran.

As The Street notes, it’s not surprising that central banks most at loggerheads with the US are the ones most aggressively attempting to de-dollarize. The Russians have cut dollar reserves from 46% of their overall portfolio in 2017 to just 22% last year. The Russians have also increased their allocation to the Chinese yuan sharply over that timespan.

“Over time the reserve holdings of dollars should broadly align with its use in trade. That is a significant (negative) adjustment. Yuan, copper, or other commodities may be an alternative to the USD for some investors. But conservative reserve managers are returning to an asset they know well. Since they turned net buyers of gold in 2009/10, the price has remained above $1,000/oz. That central bank bid and the ABCs of Anything But the Dollar should keep gold prices well supported.”

President Trump spoke out many times about the dangers of vaccinating young children before he became president. Alex exposes the globalist agenda to use vaccines for population control.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Malaysia has offered an alternative charge against a Vietnamese woman accused of killing the brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, prosecutors said on Monday.

Doan Thi Huong, 30, is facing a murder charge after smearing Kim Jong Nam’s face with VX poison, a lethal chemical weapon, at Kuala Lumpur airport in February 2017.

Prosecutors offered an alternative charge of voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means, Huong’s lawyer Salim Bashir told reporters.

Prosecutors told the court they made the offer after receiving representations from the Vietnamese embassy and Huong’s lawyers.

Exclusive: Spain’s Repsol suspends swap deal for Venezuelan oil under U.S. pressure

HOUSTON/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Spain’s Repsol has suspended its swaps of refined products for crude with Venezuela’s state-run oil company PDVSA, people familiar with the matter said, as U.S. officials weigh penalties for foreign firms doing business with Venezuela.

The Spanish oil company has been swapping fuel and waiving payments due from a joint venture with PDVSA in exchange for crude, even as the United States rolled out new sanctions aimed at ousting Venezuela’s socialist President Nicolas Maduro.

The arrangement made Repsol one of the OPEC-member nation’s main fuel suppliers, alongside Russia’s Rosneft and India’s Reliance Industries, according to three sources and vessel-tracking data.

The Trump administration blames Maduro for a severe economic crisis that has forced millions of Venezuelans to flee. The United States and dozens of other countries recognize Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as the nation’s interim president. Maduro considers Guaido a U.S. puppet.

A final decision on whether Repsol will cancel the Venezuelan swap deal altogether, after it was first arranged in late 2018, has not yet been made, the sources said.

A Repsol spokesman declined to comment on the petroleum swaps. But one of the sources said the company had been communicating with the Trump administration through the U.S. embassy in Spain, which declined to comment.

Repsol has said previously that it was complying with U.S. sanctions on PDVSA, which bar any use of the U.S. financial system or subsidiaries based in the United States for oil deals with Venezuela.

Companies have been given until April 28 to wind down their existing transactions.

Repsol’s most recent shipment of gasoline arrived in Venezuela on March 25 aboard the Torm Laura, according to vessel-tracking data from Refinitiv Eikon and consulting firm Kpler.

As of Wednesday, the Achilleas, a Suezmax tanker chartered by Repsol, remained anchored off Venezuela’s Jose oil port, after loading about 1 million barrels of heavy crude on April 6, the Refinitiv data showed.

Another Suezmax chartered by Repsol has been anchored off Jose for at least a week after loading Venezuelan oil, according to shipping sources and Refinitiv data.

The tankers are awaiting directions from Repsol before they set sail, according to one of the sources.

A separate group of 11 loaded tankers, chartered by U.S. firms Chevron Corp, Valero Energy and Citgo Petroleum have been anchored off Jose for over two months following payment complications from sanctions.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton told Reuters last month the administration was considering imposing sanctions on any companies outside the United States that do business with Venezuela.

On Wednesday in Miami, Bolton announced a series of new sanctions against Cuba and Venezuela, ratcheting up pressure on Maduro and the countries that support him.

In February, Spain imported some 75,920 barrels per day (bpd) of Venezuelan oil, down from 84,650 bpd the month before, when arrivals were boosted by the Repsol-PDVSA swap. The European country imported an average of 12,630 bpd of the crude during 2018.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – U.S. social media company Twitter will launch a new tool next week to make it easier for users to flag deliberate attempts to mislead voters taking part in key European Parliament elections next month.

Twitter, together with Google and Facebook, are under pressure to be more proactive in tackling fake news aimed at eroding democratic processes and stoking social and political tensions.

The European Commission in its March report on the three tech giants on Tuesday said the companies still fell short of their pledge to curb the spread of fake news.

“Today, we are further expanding our enforcement capabilities in this area by creating a dedicated reporting feature within the product to allow users to more easily report this content to us,” Twitter said in a blog.

Users who see a tweet with misleading information can report this by clicking on a drop down menu, select “It’s misleading about voting”, choose an option that explains how the tweet is misleading and submit the report to Twitter.

Examples of misleading information include telling voters to vote via a text message, email or phone call, identification requirements, the announced date or time of an election.

The new tool will be available from April 29 to a week after the May 23-26 European Parliament elections. It will be rolled out in India, where general elections are now ongoing, on Thursday.

Dershowitz: Mueller 'hedged,' should have said 'unequivocally' no obstruction

Former Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz said Monday on “Fox & Friends” that while Robert Mueller got most things right in his report on possible collusion between the president and Russia, he ultimately “hedged” and left the report open for political debate.

“Two cheers for Mueller… He was right about collusion or conspiracy and he was right in the end about obstruction, not bringing any charges. But he was wrong not to say unequivocally ‘look we looked at the evidence and there is no case for obstruction,’” Dershowitz said.

“There is no case for obstruction. You can’t obstruct justice if you engage in your constitutionally authorized acts.  Firing, pardoning, helping the Justice Department make decisions. That should have been the end of the inquiry."

WATCH FOX NEWS' LIVE COVERAGE AFTER THE RELEASE OF AG BARR'S LETTER OF 'PRINCIPAL CONCLUSIONS' FROM MUELLER'S RUSSIA PROBE

Attorney General William Barr released "principal conclusions" of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's completed Russia probe in a four-page letter sent Sunday to Capitol Hill lawmakers.

The letter stated that Mueller did not establish evidence that President Trump's team or any associates of the Trump campaign had conspired with Russia to sway the 2016 election -- "despite multiple offers from Russian-affiliated individuals to assist the Trump campaign."

Dershowitz added that Mueller's conclusive report ultimately mirrored former FBI director James Comey’s investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying he would not indict her but condemning her actions.

“Now what we have is a Comey situation, like with Hillary Clinton.  Comey said ‘on the one hand I’m not going to indict Clinton, on the other hand what she did was terrible.’ So, Democrats got something out of it. Republicans got something out of it,” Dershowitz said.

“Same thing is true here, the Republicans are saying vindication, the Democrats are saying this is an invitation to more investigations.”

'THIS IS A GRAND SLAM:' TRUMP TEAM 'CONFIDENT' NO COLLUSION IN MUELLER REPORT

Dershowitz added, “That’s not what prosecutors are supposed to do, they’re supposed to decide up and down, indict or not indict and then shut up. That’s it. Move on.”

The attorney also spoke out against critics who have maligned him over his analysis of the Trump investigation. Dershowitz, who describes himself as a liberal Democrat who voted for Hillary Clinton, defended himself saying “I call them as I see them.”

“What they want is to distort the facts and the law to come out against Trump,” Dershowitz said.

Senior White House adviser Jared Kushner said Tuesday that a detailed plan for a merit-based immigration system will be presented to President Trump, giving priority to skilled immigrants rather than those with family ties to the U.S.

“I do believe that the president’s position on immigration has been maybe defined by his opponents by what he’s against as opposed to what he’s for,” Kushner said at the Time 100 Summit in New York City. “What I’ve done is I’ve tried to put together a very detailed proposal for him.”

KUSHNER: RUSSIA INVESTIGATION HAD ‘HARSHER IMPACT’ ON US THAN ELECTION MEDDLING

Kushner announced that the new immigration proposal, which Trump will receive this week or next, will resemble the point-based systems in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and will unify people by ensuring strong wages and secure borders while protecting humanitarian values.

“We want to protect our country’s humanitarian values. We want to make sure we’re reunifying families, and we want to do this in a way that allows our country to be competitive long term,” he said. “And my hope is we can really do something that unifies people around what we’re for on immigration.”

JARED KUSHNER RESPONDS AFTER HASAN MINHAJ CALLS OUT HIS TIES TO SAUDI PRINCE

Kushner denied in the same talk that he has clashed with White House staffer Stephen Miller, who’s seen as tougher on immigration than others, adding that the plan was concocted with the help of Miller and Kevin Hassett, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers.

“And I say that If that if I can get Stephen Miller and Kevin Hassett to agree on an immigration plan, then Middle East peace will be easy by comparison,” Kushner joked, referring to the Israel-Palestine peace plan he’s working on.

After the plan gets presented to Trump, it will likely undergo some changes and then he will decide when to proceed with it, Kushner said.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday said his government must make men aware of the dangers of poor hygiene after expressing dismay over the 1,000 penis amputations that apparently occur in his country each year.

“In Brazil, we have 1,000 penis amputations a year due to a lack of water and soap,” he said while speaking to reporters in Brasilia after visiting the Education Ministry. “We have to find a way to get out of the bottom of this hole.”

The far-right leader called the figure “ridiculous and sad,” Reuters reported. A spokeswoman for the Brazilian urology society told the news agency the number is based on its official data for penis amputations.

The amputations were conducted out of necessity over untreated infections, along with complications from HIV and various cancers, she said.

A top Russian diplomat says Russia is willing to negotiate a new nuclear weapons treaty with the United States and China.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters on Friday Moscow is closely following reports in the United States that the U.S. would like to reach a nuclear weapons deal with both Russia and China, and is “willing” to negotiate. The story was reported by CNN earlier Friday.

Ryabkov also said that Russia “would like to convince” the U.S. to adopt a joint statement that would condemn any use of nuclear weapons.

Ryabkov’s comments come just months after the U.S. withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, a cornerstone of the post-Cold War security, and Russia followed suit. Each claims breaches by the other.

Government dysfunction and an intelligence failure that preceded the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka are traced to simmering divisions between the president and prime minister after a weekslong political crisis that crippled the country last year.

The government has admitted to a “lapse of intelligence” after officials failed to act upon near-specific information received from foreign agencies. Suicide bombers exploded themselves last Sunday in three churches and three luxury hotels, killing 253 people and wounding 400 more. Authorities said eight Muslim militants blew themselves up at their targets while the wife of one of the attackers blasted herself on being rounded up by police.

The carnage has brought forth arguments that worshippers and holidaymakers fell victim to the rivalry and a lack of communication between the country’s two leaders — President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Cabinet led by Wickremesinghe says neither he nor his ministers were informed of the intelligence received by the defense authorities. Sirisena is the head of state, defense minister, minister in charge of the police and head of the armed forces. He also chairs the National Security Council, which includes the heads of security agencies and departments. Traditionally the prime minister also plays an important role on the council.

According to Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne, Sirisena has not included Wickremesinghe in national security affairs since a dispute between them came into the open in October last year. This is an unusual departure from the protocol, he said.

Senaratne said that Sirisena was overseas when the attacks took place and even after that, the National Security Council refused to meet with Wickremesinghe as he tried to give them instructions.

Sirisena has also said that he was not informed of the intelligence received and vowed to overhaul the leadership of the defense forces.

The top bureaucrat at the Defense Ministry, Hemasiri Fernando, has resigned at Sirisena’s insistence.

“It is a major factor,” said Jehan Perera, the head of local activist group National Peace Council, referring to the alleged lack of coordination between the leaders contributing to the failure to prevent the attacks.

“The primary responsibility has to be taken by the president, he did not give the information and he did not act,” Perera said. “He had the Ministry of Defense, took the police from the prime minister, chaired the National Security Council meetings and did nothing,” Perera said.

Kusal Perera, a journalist and political commentator, says security and intelligence officials should have acted on the information whether or not they received orders from politicians.

“If they (Wickremesinghe and his party) were not invited to the National Security Council, why did not they say in Parliament that they were not responsible for the security of the country any longer,” said Perera, who is not related to Jehan Perera.

“Saying that now is taking political advantage, not taking responsibility,” he said.

Sirisena and Wickremesinghe belong to different political parties but came together for Sirisena’s presidential campaign in 2015. Their relationships broke down and their differences exploded last year when Sirisena suddenly sacked Wickremesinghe as prime minister and appointed in his place former strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa, whom he defeated in the presidential election. The crisis crippled the country for more than seven weeks to the point of not being able to pass this year’s national budget on time.

A court decision compelled Sirisena to reappoint Wickremesinghe, but the two leaders have been rivals within the same government.

Rajapaksa, who is the minority leader in Parliament, blames the government for weakening intelligence and dropping its guard, which he had maintained to defeat the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels 10 years ago to end the 26-year-old civil war. He also criticized the government for the detention of intelligence officers accused of extrajudicial killings and abductions during the closing days of the war, which he said crippled the security apparatus before the bombings. According to conservative U.N estimates, some 100,000 people were killed in Sri Lanka’s conflict.

Sirisena summoned an all-party conference Thursday to which Wickremesinghe was also invited. At the conference, Sirisena stressed “setting aside all the political beliefs and difference (so that) everybody should collectively commit towards building a peaceful environment within the country,” a statement from his office said.

“It is not a secret that the disagreements between me and the government aggravated over the past two years,” Sirisena told the country’s media executives Friday. “One of the reasons for that is weakening of military intelligence and arresting military officials unnecessarily and my speaking up against it within and outside the government.”

Jehan Perera said that the security threat could prove politically advantageous to Rajapaksa and his family, with a presidential election scheduled at the end of this year. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, a younger brother of Mahinda, was the powerful defense secretary during his brother’s reign and has expressed his interest to join the contest.

“People are saying we want a stronger leader and they are talking about Gotabhaya. It (the blasts) has worked to their benefit,” Perera said.

Cyprus police are intensifying a search for the remains of more victims at locations where an army officer, who authorities say admitted to killing five women and two girls, allegedly had dumped their bodies.

Police said Friday’s search will concentrate on a military firing range, a reservoir and a man-made lake near an abandoned mine approximately 32 kilometers (20 miles) west of the capital Nicosia.

On Thursday, the 35-year-old suspect told investigators that he had killed four more people than he had previously admitted to. All the suspect’s alleged victims are foreign nationals.

Police have already found the bodies of a 38-year-old Filipino woman and two as yet unidentified women.

Search crews are now looking for the daughter of the 38-year-old, a Romanian mother and daughter and another Filipino woman.
