Ukraine denies entry to Italian journalist, says he's biased

Ukrainian authorities have denied entry to an Italian journalist, accusing him of an "anti-Ukrainian" bias.

Marc Innaro, a correspondent for the Italian RAI state television, has been barred from entering Ukraine when he arrived in the country to cover Sunday's presidential vote.

Oleh Slobodyan, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Border Guards, said Monday that Innaro was refused entry because he "frequently engaged in anti-Ukrainian rhetoric in his reports." Slobodyan also charged that Innaro had failed to get accredited with election authorities in advance.

The move follows Ukraine's denial of entry to a journalist from Austria's national broadcaster ORF who was declared a "threat to national security." Austria criticized the ban as an "unacceptable act of censorship."

MUMBAI (Reuters) – Five people were killed and 36 injured when part of a pedestrian bridge collapsed during evening rush hour on Thursday in India’s financial capital Mumbai, police said.

At least three of the dead were women, Mumbai police spokesman Manjunath Singe said. The injured have been taken to hospital.

An excavator was brought in to clear the debris that had blocked the movement of traffic on a busy road in south Mumbai. Fire engines and an ambulance were also at the site.

The bridge connects to one of Mumbai’s biggest local stations, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, which was the site of a militant attack in 2008, and is used by tens of thousands of commuters each day.

Maharashtra state chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Twitter he was pained to hear about the accident and had asked municipal and police officials to ensure speedy relief efforts.

The incident brought back memories of a rush hour stampede that killed at least 22 people and injured 36 in 2017 at a busy railway station in Mumbai.

Weak tech demand shrinks Taiwan export orders, rebound tipped in third-quarter

TAIPEI (Reuters) – Taiwan’s export orders fell for the fifth straight month in March, and at a much sharper pace than expected, as the island’s manufacturers kept struggling with a drop in global tech demand.

Orders in March dropped 9 percent from a year earlier to $38.59 billion, Ministry of Economic Affairs data showed on Monday.

For January-March, export orders slid 8.4 percent, the biggest annual drop for a first quarter since 2009 when they tumbled 30 percent, the ministry said.

March orders fell at almost twice the 5.45 percent forecast in a Reuters poll, though the pace was less than February’s 10.9 percent, the sharpest fall in nearly three years.

Taiwan’s hi-tech factories are major suppliers for global tech heavyweights such as Apple Inc and Qualcomm, and the continued drop in orders suggests global electronic could remain soft for some time.

The ministry said the March shrinkage was also due to declining machinery orders due to business caution in China as the U.S-Sino trade dispute continues.

However, launches of smartphone models and demand for new technology such as artificial intelligence and 5G could support a rebound of orders for electronics in coming months, it said.

The faster 5G networks are coming on line in the United States, China, South Korea and other places this year, but probably will not be widespread until 2020. The telecommunications industry is expected to spend $275 billion over seven years in the United States alone, according to Accenture estimates.

Carl Liu, an analyst at KGI Securities, said Taiwan export orders “are unlikely to return to growth until in June, thanks to re-stocking of electronics ahead of the peak season in the third quarter”.

CAUTION ON OUTLOOK

The ministry said it expects April export orders to decline 6.7-9.2 percent, and that it could be July before orders rebound.

“We remain cautious about orders in the first half and expect a year-on-year decline for the second quarter,” ministry official Lin Lee-jen said.

The slowing tech demand has taken a toll on Taiwan’s supply chain manufacturers. Chipmaker TSMC last week posted its steepest quarterly profit drop in more than seven years partly due to sluggish smartphone sales.

But the company gave an upbeat forecast for the coming months, betting on rising chip demand thanks to a rollout of 5G mobile network.

In March, weak export demand was seen from all Taiwan’s major markets.

Orders from the United States fell 9.7 percent on-year, on top of February’s 5.5 percent decline.

Those from China dropped 13.7 percent, compared with a fall of 14.3 percent the previous month, while orders from Europe slipped 2.4 percent. Japan orders declined 5.8 percent.

Taiwan’s government in February trimmed its 2019 economic growth forecast to 2.27 percent, citing growing uncertainties over global growth.

Rep. Khanna: Bipartisan Work Needed to Protect Elections

There can be bipartisan agreement on keeping Russia or another country from interfering in U.S. elections, but "they always go back to [President Donald] Trump didn't have any involvement," Rep. Ro Khanna said Tuesday.

"We know that the Russians wanted Trump to win and we know that they hacked our emails and they manipulated social media," the California Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"I mean tomorrow, imagine if some foreign power wanted to elect someone on the far left. This is really not a partisan issue. And there are some very, very basic things we can do. Let ads be disclosed on the internet. Let's have coordination between our intelligence agencies and technology."

Khanna appeared on the program with former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul and former Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos, after the trio wrote an opinion piece for The Washington Post warning about election interference.

McFaul commented that Americans should thank special counsel Robert Mueller and his team for their investigation, which while clearing Trump did point to Russian interference in the 2016 race.

Stamos added that Russia "played us" in 2016, and now their playbook is out there and available to other U.S. adversaries.

"Just this morning, my colleagues at Facebook announced they took down another 500 fake accounts and pages that look like they belong to the government of Iran, so we can't just worry about the Russians," he said.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Lonzo Ball and agent Harrison Gaines are splitting amicably, both parties told ESPN on Friday.

“Harrison Gaines has been a trusted advisor and close friend for many years,” Ball told ESPN in a statement. “He guided my NBA career with integrity and always had my best interests at heart.”

Gaines, who signed Ball as his first client when the former UCLA star left for the NBA after his freshman season, thanked Lonzo and his family in a statement.

“Lonzo Ball was the first client to sign with me. He has been nothing short of phenomenal and is one of the bright young NBA Stars. I thank him and his family for giving me an opportunity,” Gaines said, per ESPN. “Mutually, we have decided to part ways. I wish Lonzo great success in the future.”

The Lakers star told the network it had nothing to do with his lawsuit against the co-founder of the family’s Big Baller Brand, which contends in court documents that the man embezzled more than $2 million from him.

Ball filed the suit late Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court against Alan Foster, an ex-con who became friends with family patriarch LaVar Ball shortly after his release from prison.

There was no indication of who would represent Ball going forward.

Lara Trump: Timing of Joe Biden accusations seems ‘very convenient’

Trump 2020 senior campaign advisor Lara Trump expressed some suspicions that accusations of inappropriate touching against former Vice President Joe Biden happened to emerge on the cusp of his expected 2020 presidential announcement.

“I don't know Joe Biden personally I've never met him. I don't really know his character but he's been in the public eye, Sandra, for so long that for all of a sudden the timing of this, it just seems very convenient,” Trump said on “America’s Newsroom.”

"If I were already in the race for the 2020 Democratic nomination I probably would not like to run against Joe Biden.”

A number of women have accused Biden in recent weeks of inappropriate, unwanted touching.

BIDEN SAYS HE'LL BE 'MORE MINDFUL ABOUT RESPECTING PERSONAL SPACE'

SANDERS TEAM DENIES PUSHING BIDEN ACCUSER ALLEGATIONS

Biden attempted to tamp down the controversy with a video in which he vowed to be "more mindful about respecting personal space in the future."

Trump told "America's Newsroom" she feels Biden needs to do a little more explaining but believes the former VP should receive the benefit of the doubt.

“I take everything with a grain of salt these days because I know what it's like and our family knows what it's like better than anyone to have things said about you and you be accused of things and maybe it's not the full truth,” Trump said.

She also addressed the president’s tweet featuring an edited video that poked fun of accusations against Biden.

“We can always count on the president for a little comic relief and a little humor. I think he's having fun with it,” Trump said.

When asked by co-host Sandra Smith if the accusations should disqualify Biden from running Trump left that up to Democratic voters.

“I'll leave that up to the Democrat voters and they can decide,” Trump said.

(Reuters) – Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Friday he had assured China’s Huawei Technologies that it would not face discrimination in the rollout of Italy’s 5G telecoms network.

Conte was speaking on a visit to China where he said he met Huawei’s chief executive, Ren Zhengfei. The prime minister’s comments were carried in Italy by TV broadcaster Sky Italia.

“I told him that we have adopted some precautions, some measures to protect our interests that demand very high levels of security … not only from Huawei but any company entering into the 5G arena,” he said.

Huawei, the world’s biggest producer of telecoms equipment, is under intense scrutiny after the United States told allies not to use its technology because of fears it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying. Huawei has categorically denied this.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump on Friday was expected to announce his intention to revoke the United States’ status as a signatory of the Arms Trade Treaty, which was signed in 2013 by then-President Barack Obama but never ratified by Congress, two U.S. officials said.

Trump was expected to announce the decision in a speech in Indianapolis, to the National Rifle Association, the officials said. The NRA, a powerful gun lobby group, has long been opposed to the treaty, which was negotiated at the United Nations.

A remote controlled robot for the 'Isotopium: Chernobyl' game is seen at the game's location in Brovary

By Margaryta Chornokondratenko

KIEV (Reuters) – A Ukrainian computer game that brings to life a town abandoned after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster may not sound like everyone’s idea of fun but has attracted 60,000 people globally since its launch in October.

Players of “Isotopium: Chernobyl” drive tanks around the ghost town of Prypyat near Chernobyl, knocking out competitors as they search for an energy source called isotopium and collecting points every time they find some.

While the game takes its theme from the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in northern Ukraine, which marked its 33rd anniversary on Friday, it was also inspired by the 2009 science fiction film “Avatar”.

Newcomers to the game think they have entered a virtual world when in fact they are controlling a real robot, equipped with a camera and computer, which makes its way around a model of the town rendered down to the tiniest detail.

“When playing our game, for the first 5-10 minutes many players don’t understand that it is not fictional,” said the game’s co-founder Sergey Beskrestnov. “They message us saying: ‘You have cool texture, you have good graphics, your designer is good, well done. You have a cool operating system.’

“People then reply: ‘It is not an operating system, it is real,’ and the player can’t believe it is real,” said Beskrestnov, speaking mid-game from Prypyat city square as he towers over surrounding five-storey buildings.

Kiev-born Beskrestnov was just 12 years old when on April 26, 1986 a botched test at the nuclear plant in the then Soviet Union sent clouds of smoldering nuclear material across large swathes of Europe, forced over 50,000 people, including Beskrestnov’s family, to evacuate and poisoned unknown numbers of workers involved in its clean-up.

Beskrestnov and his partner Alexey Fateyev used Google maps and hundreds of pictures from the Chernobyl area to recreate Prypyat landmarks, including residential buildings, a hotel, concert hall, amusement park and a stadium.

The game’s real-scale model occupies a 180 square meter (1,938 sq. ft) basement of a residential building in the Ukraine city of Brovary, just 150 km (93 miles) from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and 30 km east of Kiev.

Miniature radioactivity warning signs, graffiti on the walls of abandoned buildings and tables and chairs left scattered inside a small cafe all add to the creepy atmosphere of a once lively town.

“It’s a really neat concept …,” Shaun Prescott wrote in a review of the game published by PC Gamer magazine in January. “Controlling the tanks is kinda cumbersome, but they are tanks, after all.”

An attentive player will notice at least one inaccuracy – the real Chernobyl nuclear power plant is not located in town as it is in the game.

It costs $9 to immerse in the atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic town for an hour but only 20 people at a time can play simultaneously. Beskrestnov’s company, Remote Games, said 62,615 people around the world have registered to play the game, including around 15,000 in France and 10,000 in the United States.

A camera fixed on top of a moving tank broadcasts high quality signal in real time, allowing players from as far apart as Australia and Canada enjoy the game without facing any time delay in delivering video signals.

Its creators next ambition is to devise a game featuring the colonization of Mars in which 1,000 people will be able to simultaneously control robots on different missions involved in the operation.

“Many people advise us to contact Elon Musk directly because it resonates his dreams and ideas,” Beskrestnov jokes.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – Initial optimism over first-quarter results from Starbucks Corp was waning fast on Wall Street on Friday, as analysts questioned the longer-term prospects of its new sales push given subdued overall customer traffic numbers especially in China.

The company on Thursday beat brokerage estimates for quarterly same-store sales on the back of demand for its new Cloud Macchiato, Matcha tea and cold brews in the United States.

However, BTIG’s Peter Saleh was one of a number of sector analysts who said while customers forking out for higher-priced new drinks had helped drive growth in same-store sales, “anemic” traffic at cafes remained a concern.

He and others pointed to a 1 percent decline in footfall at cafes in the Chinese market, viewed as crucial to the chain’s growth for the foreseeable future.

More broadly, transaction numbers, the substitute analysts use for customer traffic, were unchanged in all three of the company’s global regions.

Shares in the company, which hit a record high after the results on Thursday, fell 1 percent in morning trade.

“We remain cautious given near-term headwinds surrounding China, including cannibalization, increasing competition (and) a slowing economy,” Wedbush analyst Nick Setyan said.

Starbucks has also poured money into beefing up its delivery network in China as it battles with local startup Luckin Coffee, whose speedy growth led it to file for an IPO in the United States earlier this week.

New menu items and partnerships with delivery services, the heart of the company’s strategy to win back customers lost to artisanal coffee shops and cheaper fast-food rivals, did help Starbucks’ sales in its home market.

However, analysts said growth in China may continue to be subdued.

Wells Fargo analyst Bonnie Herzog said she expects store expansion in China to take priority over comparable sales growth.

She downgraded her rating on Starbucks’ to “market perform” from “outperform”, arguing that the company facing tough sales comparisons later on in 2019 from last year and the current rich valuation of shares meant the stock had limited room to rise.

“Investors will be hesitant to invest new money in a stock with a topline that, while still strong, is unlikely to meaningfully accelerate,” Herzog said.

Still, the company’s solid same-store growth in the United States, improving profit margins and a lower tax rate for the rest of the year led at least 6 Wall Street brokerages to raise their price targets on the stock to as high as $81.

11 of 29 brokerages rate Starbucks “buy” or higher, 17 “hold” and 1 “sell” or lower. Their median price target is $75.
