China auto sales fall 14 percent in February, mark eighth month of decline

BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s automobile sales fell 13.8 percent in February from the same month a year earlier, the country’s biggest auto industry association said on Monday, marking the eighth consecutive month of decline in the world’s largest auto market.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said sales fell to 1.48 million vehicles. That followed declines of 16 percent in January and 13 percent in December.

New energy vehicle sales, in contrast, rose 53.6 percent year-on-year in February, it said.

The figures come as China plans billions of dollars in tax cuts and infrastructure spending to support an economy growing at its slowest pace in almost 30 years due to softer domestic demand and a trade war with the United States.

The government is now trying to persuade consumers to spend and has pledged subsidies to boost rural sales of some vehicles as well as the sales of new energy vehicles.

The sales picture from some Chinese automakers has so far been mixed, with Great Wall Motor Co Ltd reporting 18 percent growth for February, whereas Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd reported a 24 percent decline.

Industry executives also said China’s car sales in January and February tend to be affected by the Lunar New Year holiday, around which consumers often hold off on car-buying decisions.

The holiday’s dates change annually but tend to occur in either month. This year, it took place in the first week of February.

Three suitors circle Italy’s Cavalli as it seeks creditor protection

MILAN (Reuters) – Three investors including Italian fashion entrepreneur Renzo Rosso are eyeing a possible bid for luxury label Roberto Cavalli, according to a document filed by the company with a court in Milan as it seeks breathing space from creditors.

The fashion company on Monday filed a request with a bankruptcy court for 120 days of protection from creditors to reach an agreement on its debt and find a new investor, after it struggled to reboot sales and faced a cash crunch.

Cavalli, a red carpet favorite famed for its animal prints, has been 90 percent owned by private equity firm Clessidra since 2015, and the group attempted to overhaul the label including with a new manager and designer.

But it has posted a string of losses since 2014, with the exception of 2015, when it was back in profit after the sale of a property in Paris.

Clessidra hired Rothschild in September to find a new investor to provide the group “with the needed resources to overcome the difficult situation and to relaunch the business”, and it also subscribed to a 15 million euro ($17 million) capital increase in 2018, the document seen by Reuters showed.

But the private equity investor rejected a request by Cavalli’s board in March this year to pump another 47 million euros into the company, the court filing said.

According to a source close to the situation, the fund through which Clessidra owns Cavalli has reached its statutory limit of investment.

Out of 80 potential investors contacted by Rothschild, three expressed interest in buying the company as a whole, the document revealed.

Bluestar, a U.S. holding company which owns fashion brand Bebe, revised its initial offer but expressed “its willingness to evaluate an acquisition of the business within the framework of a debt restructuring agreement”.

Diesel-owner OTB, the group run by Renzo Rosso which had initially denied an interest, also offered to invest in Cavalli together with current shareholders and said it was “available to proceed with a deal as part of creditor procedure”.

German fashion designer Philipp Plein, who has his own brand, could be interested in pursuing takeover negotiations but only after an accord with creditors is reached, the document showed.

Cavalli is liquidating its U.S. unit and closed its stores there this week.

Gillibrand raises $3M in first quarter, trailing many other 2020 candidates

Presidential candidate Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand raised $3 million in the first quarter of this year, trailing all but one of the 2020 candidates who have disclosed their fundraising hauls.

Campaign spokeswoman Meredith Kelly said Sunday that nearly two-thirds of Gillibrand's donors are women, 92 percent were under $200 and the average online donation was $25.

Kelly added that the New York Democrat's campaign has $10.2 million cash on hand.

Gillibrand's fundraising trails all five of her Senate colleagues who are seeking the Democratic nomination. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has raised more than $18 million; California Sen. Kamala Harris was at $12 million. Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has raised $6 million, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar has raised $5.2 million and New Jersey Sen. Corey Booker has raised $5 million. The senator from New York also lags behind former Texas congressman Beto O'Rourke, who hauled in $9.4 million in the first 18 days of his campaign and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who raised $7 million in the first quarter -- and finally declared his candidacy Sunday.

Gillibrand is ahead of New York-based entrepreneur Andrew Yang, who reported raising $1.7 million in the first quarter. The remaining candidates have until Monday to file their fundraising reports with the Federal Election Commission.

Campaign cash, along with polling, is a much-watched barometer of a candidate’s clout, strength, and popularity.

Aides to Gillibrand's campaign have viewed her candidacy in two distinct phases. The first "exploratory" phase began in January when Gillibrand revealed that she was considering a presidential run on during an appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. She then quickly made her first trip to the leadoff caucus state of Iowa and held 60 events across eight states.

The second phase began with the formal launch of her campaign on March 17. Since then, her campaign said she doubled her total number of donors, though the campaign did not disclose the total number of donors or donations to her campaign.

In a memo to supporters obtained by The Associated Press, Gillibrand's campaign also says that she received a fundraising boost from her recent appearance at a CNN town hall. In that memo, Gillibrand's campaign says that of donations to the campaign made within 48 hours of the April 9 town hall, 63 percent were new contributors.

In the same memo, her campaign said though it saw her on strong financial footing, her decision to call on former Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., to step down over allegations of sexual misconduct had an adverse impact.

In the memo, the campaign said there was "no question that the first quarter was adversely impacted by certain establishment donors - and many online - who continue to punish Kirsten for standing up for her values and for women."

Pet deer kills man and injures wife in rural Australia

Police say a man has been killed and his wife critically injured when they were attacked by their pet deer on a rural Australian property.

Police Sergeant Paul Pursell says the 46-year-old man entered the stag's enclosure on Wednesday morning at Moyhu in Victoria state.

Pursell says the wife also entered the enclosure after hearing a commotion and was also attacked.

Police shot the deer before a paramedic treated the couple.

The husband died at the scene and his wife was flown by helicopter to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne where she condition was described as critical.

Pursell says the stag was a cross between a red deer and an elk.

India says it successfully test-fires anti-satellite weapon

India says it has successfully test-fired an anti-satellite weapon in an unexpected announcement just weeks before a general election.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in an address broadcast live Wednesday that Indian scientists had earlier destroyed a low earth orbit satellite with a missile, demonstrating India's capacity as a "space power" alongside the U.S., Russia and China.

The announcement is Modi's latest bid to flex India's military muscle as his party seeks to retain power in polls beginning April 11.

After 40 Indian soldiers were killed in a February suicide bombing in disputed Kashmir, India said it retaliated with a "surgical strike" on a terrorist camp in Pakistan.

Afterward in an air skirmish, Pakistan shot down one of India's Soviet-era fighter jets, prompting scrutiny of India's aging military hardware.

France warehouse fire destroys 2 million bottles of wine worth $13 million

Two million bottles of wine have been destroyed in a freak fire in France just one day after the inferno at Notre Dame Cathedral.

The blaze broke out Tuesday afternoon at a storage center north of Bordeaux, France. Sixty firefighters were dispatched and spent 15 hours trying to put out the flames in the facilty located in the Carbon-Blanc commune on the outskirts of Bordeaux. The wine itself belongs to Sovex Grands Châteaux and cost $12.9 million.

The red, white and rose bottles were packed in boxes and placed on wooden pallets that "erupted in flames" for unknown reasons. However, France 3 Nouvelle-Aquitaine reported that early results from the investigation showed the fire started in the "false ceiling which then collapsed on pallets and crates of alcohol."

About 80 employees were evacuated from the building. No injuries were reported.

Calls to Sovex by Fox News were not immediately returned.

The fire took place less than 24 hours after flames shot through Notre Dame Cathedral. Investigators said Thursday they believe an electrical short-circuit is most likely the cause behind the Paris blaze.

A California man who allegedly fatally shot his ex-girlfriend in broad daylight last month before fleeing the country has been returned to the U.S. following his arrest in Mexico on Wednesday, authorities said.

Julio Cesar Rocha, 25, of Montlcair, is accused of shooting his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend Thalia Flores and a second unidentified male victim March 21 around 2:45 p.m. while the two were sitting in a vehicle in the parking lot of a discount store in Chino. Both communities are about 36 miles east of Los Angeles.

Flores died at the scene. The man, whose name was not released, walked to a nearby hospital where he’s recovering from his gunshot wounds.

Rocha allegedly fled the scene and remained at large for more than a month, the Daily Bulletin reported. He was formally arrested at 4:30 p.m. after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport from Mexico, KTLA-TV reported.

The suspect was booked at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on murder and attempted murder charges, the City of Chino Police Department said on Facebook.

Flores ended her seven-year relationship with Rocha just two months before her death and still lived in fear of him until that point, a sister of the victim, Bernice Flores, told the Daily Bulletin.

“He said himself so many times to other people, ‘If I can’t have her, no one will.’ ” Flores said, adding that her sister stayed in the relationship longer that she would have liked in fear that Rocha would hurt her or her family if they broke up.

Rocha was convicted on misdemeanor battery in 2016 and sentenced to 60 days in prison. He was originally charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, but the charges were lowered in a plea deal, the Daily Bulletin reported.

Rocha was convicted of misdemeanor resisting or obstructing a peace officer in 2014. A second charge of misdemeanor battery was dropped in a plea deal, and Rocha was ordered to complete a 26-week anger management course, according to San Bernardino County Superior Court records. Rocha was later arrested and sentenced to 10 days behind bars for failing to complete the course.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”
