Texas Catholic priest arrested after allegedly molesting woman while giving her last rites

A Catholic priest in Texas was arrested Thursday after he allegedly molested a woman while giving her last rites.

The Rev. Gerold Langsch, was charged with assault by contact following the encounter in October. He’s currently free on $15,000 bond and is facing a year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000.

The 75-year-old priest is accused of the assault after he visited a woman in hospice care at home for complications from diabetes and administered the sacrament of anointing the sick, a sacrament of absolution.

MICHIGAN PRIEST ACQUITTED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT CHARGES

The woman, who wasn’t identified, says Langsch first anointed her chest with holy water and then began to apply lotion on her body and massage her breast. At one point he allegedly pinched her nipple and asked “Does that feel good?” before attempting to put his hand in her diaper, which he was unable to do.

The alleged incident and priest’s behavior left the woman shocked and confused, she told the police. She said she felt like a “nasty, dirty piece of meat.”

Police said that the reason it took nearly half a year for the authorities to arrest Langsch is because of the woman’s health, which delayed the investigation, even though she reported the crime five days after the incident, according to CBS Austin.

She was reportedly able to identify the priest in a lineup helping officers make an arrest and charge him with the crime.

SEX OFFENDER DRIVING INSTRUCTOR HELD ON SUSPICION OF MOLESTING 17-YEAR-OLD STUDENT, AUTHORITIES SAY

It remains unclear if there are other alleged victims of Langsch. “We would greatly encourage any victims in the Austin area to call 911 or 311 and file a report if they have been a victim with this suspect or any other suspect,” APD Detective Steven McCormick told the outlet.

The Catholic Diocese of Austin on Wednesday said in a statement that Langsch is no longer serving as a priest in the diocese and lost his position at St. Paul Catholic Church in Austin after receiving “an unrelated report that he had failed to maintain proper boundaries with an adult.”

The diocese said the report didn’t involve any physical contact, though, it still removed Langsch from the positions within the diocese, and pledged to fully cooperate with authorities.

Peter Schiff: US Debt the Real National Emergency

On Friday. Pres. Trump declared a national emergency.

Based on that declaration, the president will reallocate $6.5 billion from other government programs to fund a border wall.

In his podcast on Friday, Peter Schiff said there is indeed a national emergency, but it has nothing to do with the border.

“Of course, the real national emergency is not the lack of a wall, the failure to build a wall, but building up the national debt.”

Just last week, the US Treasury said the national debt has eclipsed the $22 trillion mark. When President Trump took office in January 2017, the debt was at $19.95 trillion. That’s a $2.06 trillion increase in the debt in just over two years.

And as Peter pointed out, this is just the tip of a huge iceberg.

“This is just a funded portion of the debt. This is where the US government sells a bond and somebody owns that bond. It doesn’t include liabilities like what the government owes for Social Security, or guaranteed bank deposits, or mortgages, or student loans, or all that nonsense. That’s not there. Those are contingent liabilities. They’re just as real. They’re not even part of the national debt.”

Peter said it’s too bad Trump doesn’t want to do anything about that crisis.

“We are headed for a train wreck in this country because of the national debt. What Trump has been building while he hasn’t been building a wall is he’s been building up the size of government, and he’s been building up the deficits that have been necessary to finance that government buildup.”

And yet nobody seems concerned. The president didn’t even mention the debt in the State of the Union address.  According to a tweet by ABC White House correspondent Tara Palmeri, when asked if Trump was going to talk about the deficit, the president’s chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, said: “nobody cares.”

A lot of people claim that we really don’t need to worry about the debt because, after all, it’s been growing for years and nothing has happened. Peter has a different take.

“Just because we haven’t suffered a crisis – yet- based on this debt doesn’t mean that one isn’t coming. In fact, there’s no way around it. It’s just a question of when. It’s not a question of if, it’s a question of when, and I think when is a lot closer than a lot of people think.”

In this podcast, Peter also covered some more negative economic news, Fed news, including the fact that the Fed is now talking about using quantitative easing “more readily” and the fact that the mainstream doesn’t know what’s going on. It’s like a deer in the headlights.

“You know what happens eventually to the deer in the headlight. He gets hit by the car and he dies.”

DeVos blasts media over ‘shameful’ coverage of Special Olympics proposed cuts

Education Secretary Besty DeVos blasted the media Wednesday, accusing news outlets of reporting “falsehoods” about her department’s plan to cut funding to the Special Olympics.

“It is unacceptable, shameful and counterproductive that the media and some members of Congress have spun falsehoods and fully misrepresented the facts," DeVos said in a statement.

"Make no mistake: we are focused every day on raising expectations and improving outcomes for infants and toddlers, children and youth with disabilities, and are committed to confronting and addressing anything that stands in the way of their success,” she continued.

BETSY DEVOS TO VISIT STRUGGLING SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOLS

DeVos drew attention to the $13.2 billion in federal grants awarded to states for special education.

The secretary faced a storm of criticism after she was grilled by the House Appropriations subcommittee over proposed budget cuts that would eliminate nearly $18 million in federal funding for the athletic competition for disabled youth and adults while calling for a $60 million increase in charter school funding.

She said she has “personally supported” the Special Olympics, but added that it could be supported through philanthropy as well. The Special Olympics received $17.6 million from the Education Department this year, according to records.

In her statement, she said the organization raises more than $100 million annually and that “There are dozens of worthy nonprofits that support students and adults with disabilities that don't get a dime of federal grant money.”

“But given our current budget realities, the federal government cannot fund every worthy program, particularly ones that enjoy robust support from private donations.”

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., who chairs the Senate Appropriations subcommittee, declared Wednesday that the proposed cuts would not be approved.

"I’m a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics and proud that Missouri is home to the largest Special Olympics training facility in the world," Blunt said in a statement, according to the Washington Times. "I was just at the World Games and saw, as I have many times before, what a huge impact the organization has on athletes, their families, and their communities. Our Department of Education appropriations bill will not cut funding for the program."

Just last week, Blunt attended the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games, held in Abu Dhabi, Roll Call reported.

DeVos is expected to present her budget to Blunt's panel Thursday.

New details in Sri Lanka Easter Sunday bombings as death toll rises; Dems divided on impeaching Trump

Developing now, Monday, April 22, 2019

NEW DETAILS IN SRI LANKA BOMBINGS EMERGE AS DEATH TOLL RISES: The series of bombings that ripped through churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday and left at least 290 people dead and more than 500 people wounded were carried out by seven suicide bombers and investigators are examining reports that intelligence agencies had warnings of possible attacks, according to the Associated Press …  No one has taken responsibility for the bombings. Defense Minister Ruwan Wijewardena described the blasts as a terrorist attack by religious extremists, and police said 13 suspects had been arrested.

The identities of some victims of the Easter massacres in Sri Lanka emerged Sunday evening -- including a British mother and her 11-year-old son, along with a TV chef, Shantha Mayadunne, and her daughter, Nisanga. Most of those killed were Sri Lankans. However, the U.S. said “several” Americans were among the dead, while Britain and China said they, too, lost citizens.

BUZZFEED EDITOR TAKES SRI LANKA SHOT AT TRUMP: A BuzzFeed News world editor faced backlash Sunday for taking a swipe at President Trump while tweeting an article about the attacks in Sri Lanka on Easter ... "Suspect we’d be hearing a lot more outrage from Trump and co. if the Christians killed in Sri Lanka were white," Miriam Elder tweeted with a link to BuzzFeed News. Elder’s tweet had received more 6,000 replies, 179 retweets and 423 likes as of early Monday morning. Many of the commenters asked why the BuzzFeed News world editor would politicize the terrorist attacks. When contacted by Fox News, BuzzFeed News responded: “No comment from us.” Trump on Easter morning offered condolences to the people of Sri Lanka, tweeting, "We stand ready to help!”

DEMS DIVIDED ON COLLUSION, SEEKING TRUMP IMPEACHMENT: Leading Democrats appeared divided whether to pursue impeachment against President Trump after last week's release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's redacted report, which found no evidence of collusion and did not draw a conclusion on whether Trump obstructed justice ... Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., chair of the House Oversight Committee, signaled that Democrats are not yet concerned about the possibility of "Russia fatigue" and warned ominously on Sunday that "the Russians aren't getting tired" and are "attacking our electoral system every single day."

Cummings previewed new lines of investigation against Trump and said it might be necessary to hear testimony from former White House Counsel Don McGahn and Mueller himself. In addition, Cummings neither fully endorsed, not rejected the idea of pursuing impeachment against Trump. 2020 presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren and freshman Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. have all called for impeachment.

But other Democrats, including Maryland House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and 2020 presidential candidates Reps. Tim Ryan and Tulsi Gabbard have also said impeachment proceedings would be premature or misguided. (Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif. chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, weighed in on the prospects of impeaching Trump and more on "Fox News Sunday." Click on the video above to watch the full interview.)

Meanwhile, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-NY, argued on Sunday that, despite Mueller deciding not to charge President Trump with obstruction of justice, he believes there is still plenty of evidence of obstruction and wondered why Donald Trump Jr. isn't facing charges for the infamous Trump Tower meeting with Russian operatives in June 2016.

REPORT: U.S TO SANCTION FIVE NATIONS OVER IRANIAN OIL - The Trump administration is set to inform five nations that they will no longer be exempt from U.S. sanctions if they continue to import oil from Iran, reports said Sunday ... Secretary of State Mike Pompeo plans to announce the policy move on Monday, which would no longer renew sanctions waivers for allies Japan, South Korea, and Turkey. The other countries no longer exempt are China and India. The waivers for sanctions will expire on May 2. The Washington Post first reported on the move, and three sources confirmed the report to the Associated Press.

AOC FACING EARLY RE-ELECTION CHALLENGE: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s surging national profile has inspired a trio of Republican opponents from her home district — along with a multimillionaire mystery donor who could help close the gap in her foes’ long-shot race against her ... Just three months after taking office, the Democratic socialist congresswoman’s challengers include an Egyptian American journalist, who has already tossed her hat in the ring, and an NYPD cop-turned-high-school-civics teacher and conservative talk-radio producer, both of whom are seriously exploring a run against her. And the fledgling challengers could get help from a wealthy New Yorker committed to backing an Ocasio-Cortez opponent, the New York Post reports.

Australian who drove into crowd, killed 6, sentenced to life

A man who drove a stolen car into lunchtime crowds in downtown Melbourne and killed six people was sentenced to life imprisonment in what the judge described as "one of the worst examples of mass murder in Australian history."

James Gargasoulas, 29, showed little emotion when sentenced Friday in Victoria state's Supreme Court. Under the terms of his sentence, he will spend at least 46 years in jail before he's eligible for parole.

Families of the victims filled the courtroom for Justice Mark Weinberg's ruling. Gargasoulas was in a drug-induced psychosis in January 2017 when he killed the six people and injured dozens more in the busy Bourke St. Mall.

His victims included a 3-month-old baby who was thrown 60 meters (200 feet) from his stroller and a 10-year-old girl.

Trump: Google Helping China's Military Rather Than US

President Donald Trump said Alphabet Inc.’s Google is helping China’s military instead of the U.S., repeating an assertion by his acting defense secretary.

Google in October dropped out of the bidding for a Pentagon cloud-computing contract valued at as much as $10 billion, saying the project may conflict with its corporate values.

Trump’s Twitter blast followed comments by Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan citing Google’s “support to China and their lack of support to the Department of Defense.” China’s armed forces benefit from Google because of the country’s “fusion of commercial business with military” operations, Shanahan told the Armed Services Committee on Thursday.

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Lockheed Martin offered India a new combat jet, F-21, on Wednesday to be made locally, in a bid to win a large military order worth over $15 billion.

The U.S. defence firm had earlier offered its F-16 fighter used by countries around the world for the Indian air force’s ongoing competition for 114 planes to be made in India.

But Lockheed, unveiling the plan at an airshow in the southern city of Bengaluru, said it was offering India a new plane configured for its needs.

“The F-21 is different, inside and out,” Vivek Lall, vice president of Strategy and Business Development for Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, said in a statement.

The company will build the plane in collaboration with Tata Advanced Systems, the firm said.

Lockheed is competing with Boeing’s F/A-18, Saab’s Gripen, Dassault Aviation’s Rafale, the Eurofighter Typhoon and a Russian aircraft for the air force order.

It’s the type of crime that doesn’t happen every day.

Police in the suburbs of Philadelphia say three suspects broke into a medical facility in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, last Saturday and fled with 18 colonoscopies – devices used for examining the health of patients’ colons.

Suspects are seen leaving a medical facility in Wynnewood, Pa., allegedly carrying 18 colonoscopes worth about $450,000. (Lower Merion Police Department)

The devices were reportedly worth a total of about $450,000, authorities said.

But police were perplexed about what the suspects might have planned to do with the instruments.

“This is not something that a typical pawn shop might accept,” Lower Merion Police Detective Sergeant Michael Vice told Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV. “My feeling would be that it was some type of black market sales.”

Such a market apparently does exist, Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath told Philly.com.

“They appeared to know precisely where to go, and they pried the door open,” McGrath said of the suspects, who were captured on surveillance video leaving the facility, carrying bulging backpacks.

Police are hoping the suspects will be caught in the end.

BEIJING (Reuters) – British finance minister Philip Hammond said on Friday that he had a “very constructive meeting” with his counterpart in the opposition Labour Party before leaving for Beijing and that he was optimistic about finding common ground.

Hammond, speaking on the sidelines of a summit on China’s Belt and Road initiative in Beijing, said talks with Labour aimed at finding a way forward on Brexit had not stalled.

“I’m optimistic that we will find common ground,” he said. “Both sides have got clear positions and both sides will have to compromise in order to reach an agreement.”

Hammond added that he absolutely did not favor a no deal exit from the European Union.

NICOSIA (Reuters) – Cypriot police searched on Friday for more victims of a suspected serial killer, in a case which has shocked the Mediterranean island and exposed the authorities to charges of “criminal indifference” because the dead women were foreigners.

The main opposition party, the left-wing AKEL, called for the resignation of Cyprus’s justice minister and police chief.

Police were combing three different locations west of the capital Nicosia for victims of the suspected killer, a 35-year-old army officer who has been in detention for a week.

The bodies of three women, including two thought to be from the Philippines, have been recovered. Police sources said the suspect had indicated the location of the third body, found on Thursday, and had said the person was “either Indian or Nepali”.

Police said they were searching for a further four people, including two children, based on the suspect’s testimony.

“These women came here to earn a living, to help their families. They lived away from their families. And the earth swallowed them, nobody was interested,” AKEL lawmaker Irene Charalambides told Reuters.

“This killer will be judged by the court but the other big question is the criminal indifference shown by the others when the reports first surfaced. I believe, as does my party, that the justice minister and the police chief should resign. They are irrevocably exposed.”

Police have said they will investigate any perceived shortcomings in their handling of the case.

One person who did attempt to alert the authorities over the disappearances, a 70-year-old Cypriot citizen, said his motives were questioned by police.

The bodies of the two Filipino women reported missing in May and August 2018 were found in an abandoned mine shaft this month. Police discovered the body of the third woman at an army firing range about 14 km (9 miles) from the mine shaft.

Police are now searching for the six-year-old daughter of the first victim found, a Romanian mother who disappeared with her eight-year-old child in 2016, and a woman from the Phillipines who vanished in Dec. 2017.

The suspect has not been publicly named, in line with Cypriot legal practice.

A public vigil for the missing was planned later on Friday.

LONDON, April 26 – British factories stockpiled raw materials and goods ahead of Brexit at the fastest pace since records began in the 1950s, and they were increasingly downbeat about their prospects, a survey showed on Friday.

The Confederation of British Industry’s (CBI) quarterly survey of the manufacturing industry showed expectations for export orders in the next three months fell to their lowest level since mid-2009, when Britain was reeling from the global financial crisis.

The record pace of stockpiling recorded by the CBI was mirrored by the closely-watched IHS Markit/CIPS purchasing managers’ index published earlier this month.

Nearly a week later, even after the cleaners have come through, the blood can still be seen clearly. The statues of Jesus and the saints are still speckled with fragments of shrapnel. The smell of death is everywhere, though the bodies are long gone.

Yet somehow, there’s a beauty to St. Sebastian’s, a neighborhood church in a Catholic enclave north of Sri Lanka’s capital, where a man calmly walked in during Easter services with a heavy backpack and blew himself up.

You can see the beauty in the broken stained-glass windows. It’s there as the sun shines through the roof’s gaping holes. It’s there in the little statues that refused to fall over, and despite the swarms of police and soldiers who seem to be everywhere now in the streets of the seaside town of Negombo.

For more than 50 years, St. Sebastian’s had been the scene of weddings and baptisms, of Christmas celebrations and countless Masses.

It’s still not clear exactly how many died Sunday at the Negombo church, but perhaps nearly half of the roughly 250 people killed in the Easter bombings that targeted churches and high-end hotels. Authorities say a once-obscure militant Muslim group carried out the attacks.

In a largely Buddhist country, Negombo is mostly Catholic town with dozens of churches. For days, it has been in mourning.

St. Sebastian’s walls are now blackened near where the bomber stood when he killed himself, spraying shrapnel in every direction. From inside, you see destruction wherever you look.

But from outside the church, if you ignore the police tape and if you’re standing far enough away, you might think nothing had happened there at all.

You might think St. Sebastian’s is a place known only for weddings and baptisms, for Christmas celebrations and countless Masses.
