March 22, 2019

DeMarcus Cousins contributed six points to a third-quarter runaway in his return to the lineup Thursday night, helping the Golden State Warriors blow out the Indiana Pacers 112-89 in Oakland, Calif.

All five starters scored in double figures as the Warriors were able to retain a half-game lead over Denver in their duel for best record in the Western Conference. The Pacers saw their lead over Boston trimmed to a half-game in their fight for the fourth seed in the East.

Cousins, who had missed the final two games of Golden State’s just completed four-game trip with a sore ankle, recorded 19 points and 11 rebounds in 26 minutes of action. Klay Thompson had 18 points, and Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry each scored 15 for the Warriors.

Tyreke Evans had a game-high 20 points off the bench, and Thaddeus Young 18 for the Pacers, who went 0-4 on a Western swing.

Hawks 117, Jazz 114

Rookie Trae Young scored 23 points, including the go-ahead three-point play with 1:47 remaining, and Atlanta hung on to beat visiting Utah.

Dewayne Dedmon made a free throw with 6.2 seconds left to give the Hawks a 117-114 lead. Utah’s Kyle Korver then missed two free throws, the second on purpose, and Donovan Mitchell missed a 3-pointer that was rebounded by Atlanta’s Kent Bazemore as the clock expired.

The win broke Atlanta’s three-game losing streak and snapped Utah’s five-game winning streak. The Jazz got 34 points from Mitchell, his second straight 30-point game.

Nuggets 113, Wizards 108

Nikola Jokic had 15 points and 11 assists, and visiting Denver held off Washington for its fifth straight win.

Eight Nuggets scored in double figures, including Paul Millsap, Gary Harris, Jamal Murray and Torrey Craig at 15 points each.

Bradley Beal scored 25 points for the Wizards, who have lost three straight. Thomas Bryant added 22.

Hornets 113, Timberwolves 106

Kemba Walker scored 31 points, and host Charlotte rolled to a much-needed victory over Minnesota.

The Hornets scored seven straight points early in the fourth quarter to gain a working margin, and then they went on to lead by as many as 11 down the stretch, the latest at 111-100.

The Hornets had lost four of their previous five and 11 of their previous 15. The Timberwolves, who got 21 points and 16 rebounds from Karl-Anthony Towns, have lost five straight.

Kings 116, Mavericks 100

Buddy Hield scored 29 points, and host Sacramento took care of Dallas. The Kings bounced back after blowing a 25-point, fourth-quarter lead in their last outing against visiting Brooklyn on Tuesday, resulting in a 123-121 loss.

Hield connected on seven 3-pointers and now has made 238 treys. He trails Peja Stojakovic by only two for the most in a single season in Kings history. Marvin Bagley III came off the Sacramento bench to score 22 points and grab 12 rebounds, and Willie Cauley-Stein had 10 points and 18 rebounds.

Former Kings forward Justin Jackson led the Mavericks with 19 points. Luka Doncic scored 13 points and hauled down 10 boards.

Pistons 118, Suns 98

Wayne Ellington scored 23 points, hitting six 3-pointers, and Detroit pulled away for a win at Phoenix.

Detroit’s Blake Griffin had 17 points, seven rebounds and eight assists despite shooting 4 of 17 from the field. Andre Drummond supplied 16 points and 19 rebounds, and Luke Kennard also scored 16 points to help the Pistons win for the third time in four games.

Devin Booker led the Suns with 26 points, and rookie Deandre Ayton contributed 20 points and eight rebounds.

Report: Sick student’s bag filled with empty whisky bottles

Authorities say a South Carolina middle schooler who passed out in class last week had a backpack filled with nine empty mini bottles of Fireball Cinnamon Whisky.

The State reports the Union County Sheriff's Office report says a search of the 13-year-old's bag also revealed another half-empty mini bottle and two unopened bottles.

The report says the boy took the whisky from his unwitting grandfather and passed out an undetermined number of bottles to other Sims Middle School students.

It says he appeared to be drunk at school and was vomiting and moving unsteadily. He was hospitalized and later released.

He was arrested and charged with drunkenness and liquor law violations possession at the school. The report says he was then released into his mother's custody.

Soccer: Equal pay still a stretch for French women

CLAIREFONTAINE, France (Reuters) – Women’s soccer has been developing rapidly in France but Frenchwomen do not believe they are in a position to ask for the same financial treatment as the men even though their American counterparts have filed an equal pay lawsuit.

France, fourth in the FIFA women’s world rankings, are among the favorites for this year’s World Cup on home soil, but they are still trailing the U.S., the three-times world champions.

“The guys have a huge exposure, they have results and a lot of people following them,” 21-year-old midfielder Grace Geyoro told Reuters on Tuesday ahead of a friendly game against Japan.

While the U.S. men’s team failed to qualify for last year’s World Cup, Didier Deschamps’s French side emerged triumphant in Russia.

“The bonuses will depend on our performances, on how things are going to pan out, on what kind of exposure we will get,” added Geyoro.

“We would like to get a little bit more. Maybe not as much as the men but a bit more would be great,” striker Valerie Gauvin, who plays at Montpellier, told Reuters.

The 22-year-old is hoping that the World Cup will boost the sport’s visibility and consequently, its financial attractiveness.

“I hope it won’t take too long even if it has been going in the right direction and maybe after this summer things will evolve faster and the World Cup will draw more media and more sponsors.”

Deschamps’s men earned 300,000 euros ($336,000) each after beating Croatia in the 2018 World Cup final and French media reported that the women will receive a 15,000-euro bonus each if they lift the trophy in Lyon on July 7.

Paris St Germain player Geyoro explained that women’s soccer has a higher profile in the U.S. due to the team’s success at multiple World Cups.

“In the U.S., women’s soccer is growing faster,” she said. “Now it is up to us to increase our exposure.”

One of the ways to increase exposure to the media and the fans would be for women to play in the same stadiums as the men.

Last week, 39,000 supporters turned up for a women’s game between Juventus and Fiorentina at Turin’s Allianz Stadium.

“We have played some games at the Parc des Princes for big events and obviously playing in bigger stadiums would attract more people,” said Geyoro.

Women playing in one of France’s top clubs (Lyon, PSG, Marseille, Montpellier) earn an average 4,000 euros a month, according to French federation figures – a far cry from the reported 3 million euros a month earned by PSG’s Neymar.

However, it is not all doom and gloom for the women.

“There are less barriers with the fans, a lot of people can come and see us. There are more and more young girls coming to the stadium to see the training sessions for the games,” said Gauvin, who managed to complete a marketing and communications course while playing football.

Senior Obama cyber official lobbying for China

China's government-linked telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies has hired a senior Obama administration cyber security official as a lobbyist, according to a congressional filing.

Samir Jain, former senior director for cybersecurity policy at the White House National Security Council, notified Congress March 27 that he is registering as a lobbyist for the Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. Jain is now with the lobbying firm Jones Day.

According to his online biography for Jones Day, Jain worked at the White House from 2016 to 2017 and before that was an associate deputy attorney general from 2014 to 2015, where he worked on national security and computer fraud issues.

At the White House, Jain led a team responsible for cyber incident response and was chairman of an interagency group that reviewed proposed cyber operations by the U.S. government. He also worked on international issues, such as a campaign to win support for U.S.-proposed international cyber norms.

While at the Justice Department, Jain also took part in international negotiations "such as China's agreement not to engage in cyber-enabled intellectual property theft for commercial gain," his bio states.

Tesla walks back its plan to close most showrooms

Tesla is walking back its plan to close most of its showrooms worldwide.

The company said Monday that it's still shifting to online sales, but it won't close as many stores as originally thought.

Tesla announced last month that it would shutter most of its stores to cut costs so it could make money on the $35,000 Model 3 electric car.

The $35,000 base Model 3 will still be available but the company will raise prices 3 percent on all other models.

Tesla now says it closed 10 percent of its stores, but a few of those will be reopened. Another 20 percent are being evaluated and some could stay open.

The company gave no numbers. It had 378 stores and service centers worldwide and about 100 U.S. stores.

China to give $989 million to build new highway in Sri Lanka

China has agreed to provide a loan of $989 million to Sri Lanka to build an expressway that will connect the island nation's tea-growing central region to a China-run seaport on the southern coast.

A finance ministry statement said Friday that the Export-Import Bank of China has agreed to provide a concessional loan covering 85 percent of the contract prices for the expressway, whose total estimated cost is $1.16 billion.

The loan comes as Sri Lanka struggles to repay $5.9 billion in foreign loans this year, of which 40 percent must be serviced by the end of this month.

Much of Sri Lanka's foreign debt is from China.

California amputee who lost prosthetic leg while skydiving gets it back after deputy finds it in unlikely spot

A California amputee was able to joke that he'd now lost two legs skydiving after authorities discovered the man's $15,000 prosthetic limb -- which had detached and tumbled to earth during an otherwise successful Sunday jump.

Dion Callaway, who had his leg amputated after a skydiving accident two years ago, told the Press Democrat that, once he'd landed after a 10,000-foot plunge, he spent hours searching for the prosthesis to no avail.

Dion Callaway lost his prosthetic leg while skydiving on Sunday.

“I’ve jumped with the prosthetic before, but a rush of air got inside this time and it just flew off,” Callaway said Monday. “I tried to watch where it was falling, but I was so overwhelmed in that moment I could not keep track.”

The limb was eventually recovered at the nearby Cloverdale lumberyard.

ARMY SERGEANT KILLED IN 'FREAK ACCIDENT' WHILE SKYDIVING IN NORTH CAROLINA

Micah Smith, the lumberyard’s production manager, told the newspaper that a worker spotted the prosthesis -- but mistook it for a soda can.

“Oh, that’s not a soda can, that’s a leg,” Smith recalled thinking when he took a closer look at the object. “It was a nice looking Nike [shoe].”

That report brought out a deputy with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, and authorities then set out to find the owner -- even posting a "classified" ad on social media: "Missing a leg?"

The deputy eventually contacted people at the nearby airport in hopes of finding the leg’s owner and workers there quickly hooked officials up with Callaway.

The deputy was able to find the prosthetic leg's owner after contacting the nearby airport.

NEW JERSEY SKYDIVING ACCIDENT LEAVES 'VERY EXPERIENCED' JUMPER DEAD

Callaway was reunited with his prosthetic leg on Monday and noted it was “in perfect shape — survived 10,000 feet.”

"[Callaway] promises to make a tether and learn from this but fully plans to stick with his passion. Good luck Dion!! Great spirit!!!" the sheriff's office wrote in a Facebook post.

Callaway told the newspaper that he shattered his heel two years ago after he landed on the ground at a high speed. He went through a year of physical therapy before opting to amputate his leg below the knee.

“Skydiving is my everything and the people I do it with are my family,” Callaway said. “I always seem to come back to it.”

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – The grounding of India’s Jet Airways is turning into a quick windfall and long-term opportunity for international airlines keen to scoop up nearly a million outbound passengers from what was once the nation’s biggest airline.

Jet, which previously had a fleet of around 120 largely Boeing Co planes, was forced to indefinitely halt all flight operations on April 17 after its banks rejected the carrier’s plea for emergency funds.

The carrier’s descent into crisis has benefited international airlines in the form of rising fares and demand, data showed.

Fares from India to cities such as Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Bali in the first quarter of 2019 rose between 4 percent and 32 percent from a year ago, according to Indian travel portal MakeMyTrip Ltd.

In the peak travel months of May and June, fares to London have spiked as much as 36 percent and tickets to San Francisco are up nearly 20 percent from a year ago, according to data from travel portal Yatra.com.

“For the next three months it’s actually bonanza time for international players,” said Ashish Nainan, a research analyst at CARE Ratings. “At least until the middle of June, the fares are not going to come down.”

Due to rising demand, even before Jet’s lessors grounded planes, carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines Ltd and United Airlines saw an up to a 27 percent increase in passenger numbers from India in the last quarter of 2018, data from India’s aviation regulator showed. That is the latest period for which the data is available.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, clocking 15-20 percent domestic growth in recent years. It has long had only two full-service long-haul carriers, state-run Air India and Jet.

Jet is now hoping to be bailed out by a new investor, with final bids due on May 10.

INCREASING CAPACITY

Before its grounding, Jet had the biggest share of India’s outbound international air traffic, carrying 12 percent of the 7.8 million passengers headed overseas in the Oct-Dec quarter, down from 14 percent a year earlier, data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.

For an interactive graphic on Jet’s market share, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2WvDQYi

For an interactive graphic on average daily flights by the airline, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2FeFDel

The total number of passengers traveling overseas with Jet fell 10 percent during the last quarter of 2018 even as the outbound travel market grew about 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines posted a 27 percent increase in passengers from India, Cathay registered 17 percent growth and British Airways saw a 10 percent rise in the same period.

Cathay said the events at Jet combined with increasing demand for travel had led it to deploy larger aircraft with more seats on some Indian routes.

“In the long term we would certainly like to be able to offer more capacity into India, not just on our existing routes but by establishing new services to secondary cities,” Cathay said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines, in an email to Reuters, said the Indian market is “very promising” but declined to give details of airfare levels or demand patterns in the wake of Jet’s exit, citing a quiet period before the release of its annual results.

DOMESTIC GAINS

Jet’s grounding has also had a big impact on the domestic market, with inter-city air fares to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata soaring more than 20 percent in May and June, according to Yatra.com.

The spike in fares is expected to underpin strong earnings for IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd, which are set to report results for the quarter ended March 31 in the coming weeks.

“Domestic Indian carriers are the main benefactors, but I suspect if Jet fails to be revived by May 10 then Vistara and other airlines that ply international routes, particularly the lucrative Gulf market, are the main winners,” said Shukor Yusof, the head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics. Vistara is a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

Inadequate bilateral traffic rights between India and other countries, however, could be an impediment to foreign carriers’ hopes of winning business lost by Jet, some analysts said.

“Even before Jet’s operational shutdown, international capacity was significantly constrained,” said Kapil Kaul, CEO for South Asia of consultancy CAPA. “We have now more serious capacity challenge … this is unlikely to be stabilized in the near term.”

A new national government likely to be in place sometime after elections end in May is expected to address the international capacity constraints, and once bilateral agreements are eased airlines including Emirates, Turkish and Qatar would immediately benefit, said Kaul.

“We would love to add more flights but we are at the limit of the allocation granted to us for traffic rights,” Emirates Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori told reporters in Dubai on Wednesday.

(Reuters) – AstraZeneca Plc beat first-quarter sales and earnings expectations on Friday as the British drugmaker benefited from a push into cancer drugs and emerging markets including China.

Newer treatments such as lung cancer drug Tagrisso, now the company’s top selling medicine, have helped the drugmaker’s return to growth after years of crumbling sales due to patent losses on older drugs.

Sales in China have shown explosive growth, more than doubling since 2012, but AstraZeneca executives on Friday said that may not be sustained.

“The enormous growth you currently see in China, 28 percent, probably is not sustainable, but we feel very bullish that the growth will continue to be at a pace of between 15 percent and 20 percent,” Ruud Dobber, executive vice president, BioPharma, told Reuters.

Shares of the company were down 0.2 percent at 5,878 pence at 1031 GMT.

The turnaround in AstraZeneca’s fortunes has been powered by a push into cancer treatments led by Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, who saw off a 2014 takeover bid from Pfizer in part by promising annual sales of $45 billion by 2023.

In the first quarter, sales from its oncology unit rose 59 percent to $1.89 billion, accounting for 35 percent of total product sales.

The company has moved deeper into cancer therapy market through wide-ranging deals, including those for immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Last month, it agreed a multi-billion dollar oncology deal with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd.

“We’re reaching that point where after years of having to keep faith, we have actually got something tangible to believe in,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett said.

AstraZeneca also backed its annual sales and earnings forecast and said it has extensively prepared for UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union, even in the event of a no-deal exit.

The company has already spent more than 40 million pounds ($52 million) on Brexit preparations, including stockpiling six weeks’ worth of drugs in the UK and four weeks in continental Europe to guard against shortages.

AstraZeneca said product sales rose 14 percent at constant currency to $5.47 billion in the quarter, led by its lung cancer drug Tagrisso and respiratory treatment Pulmicort.

China sales increased by 28 percent to $1.24 billion in the quarter, accounting for nearly a quarter of overall product sales.

Core earnings came in at 89 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts on average were expecting core earnings of 85 cents per share and product sales of $5.29 billion, according to a company provided consensus of 19 analysts.

Britain and Ireland are making a new push to restore Northern Ireland’s collapsed government, amid mounting criticism of politicians following the murder of a journalist by a banned militant group.

The two governments are expected to make an announcement Friday about talks to revive the power-sharing administration, which has been suspended for more than two years because of a dispute between the main Protestant and Catholic parties.

Security officials warn that political drift in Northern Ireland could embolden those bent on violence.

Pressure on politicians has grown since the killing of journalist Lyra McKee, shot dead by an Irish nationalist militant during rioting in Londonderry last week.

Police have released video footage of a stocky, masked man they say is a key suspect and have urged residents to help identify him.
