Working for the weekend: China extends holiday to spur consumers

BEIJING (Reuters) – China is extending a public holiday to get people to travel and spend more as the government pins its hopes on a vast consumer base to help cushion an economic slowdown.

People can have two more days off for the Labour Day holidays that start on May 1, which falls on a Wednesday this year, creating a 4-day break through May 4 to encourage more travel, the state council said on Friday.

To compensate for the extra time off, people will have to work on April 28 and May 5, both Sundays.

Retail sales growth slid to the lowest in over a decade last year as consumers bought fewer cars, electronics and home appliances.

The Labour Day holidays are one of the peak seasons for people to travel and spend in China.

It was reduced to a one-day holiday in 2018, but the government extends the break to three or four days when it falls close to a weekend.

CHICAGO (Reuters) – American Airlines Group Inc said on Sunday it is extending Boeing Co 737 MAX cancellations through Aug. 19, leading to about 115 daily canceled flights, or 1.5 percent of its daily summer flying schedule.

In a letter to employees and customers, Chief Executive Doug Parker and President Robert Isom said they believe the 737 MAX will be recertified before Aug. 19, but they want to ensure reliability “for the peak travel season and provide confidence to our customers and team members when it comes to their travel plans.”

Boeing’s 737 MAX aircraft was grounded worldwide in March following a fatal crash on Ethiopian Airlines that killed all 157 aboard, just five months after a similar crash on Lion Air that killed all 189 passengers and crew.

American Airlines owns 24 MAX jets and is awaiting delivery of 16 more this year.

Chicago-based Boeing has been developing a software upgrade for an anti-stall system under scrutiny in both crashes.

Parker and Isom said they are “confident” in Boeing’s impending software updates and new training proposals, and remain in continuous contact with regulatory authorities over the MAX recertification process.

Once the aircraft is recertified, which the executives said they expect will happen “soon,” American plans to initially bring its MAX aircraft back on line as spares to supplement its operation as needed during the summer.

Fox News Poll: Approval of President Trump steady since Mueller probe ended

President Trump’s job approval stands at 45 percent, while 51 percent of voters disapprove, according to a new Fox News Poll.  And that is almost exactly where it was last month, 46-51 percent, before Special Counsel Robert Mueller completed his Russia probe March 22.

That makes sense given two-thirds of voters (65 percent) say Mueller’s investigation has not changed how they feel about Trump.  One in ten (10 percent) say they feel better about the president, while nearly two in ten (17 percent) feel worse.

CLICK HERE TO READ THE POLL RESULTS

The Justice Department will release a redacted version of Mueller’s report Thursday.  Attorney General William Barr released his summary March 24.  Congressional Democrats want the full report released, as do 80 percent of voters according to a Fox News Poll conducted March 17-20.

But don’t expect the release of Mueller’s report to put the issue to rest.  The poll finds 35 percent of voters think the Russia investigation proves there was no collision, while 64 percent disagree or have no opinion.

In addition, 57 percent think it is at least somewhat likely U.S. intelligence agencies broke the law when they started investigating the Trump campaign in the first place: 22 percent think it is “extremely” likely, 12 percent “very” likely, 23 percent “somewhat” likely. A third, 35 percent, think it is “not at all” likely that there were illegalities in the investigation.

Meanwhile, 33 percent of voters are “not at all” confident the government can prevent Russia or others from hacking into U.S. election systems in future elections.  Less than a quarter (22 percent) are “extremely” or “very” confident.

Poll-pourri

Mueller receives a better net favorable score than Barr or Trump.  He’s at +12 points (42 favorable vs. 30 unfavorable).  Barr, who nearly half of voters can’t rate, is in negative territory by just one point (26-27), while Donald Trump is underwater by 9 (44-53).

Among Republicans, 87 percent have a favorable opinion of Trump and 44 percent like Barr.

Thirty-one percent of Republicans and 54 percent of Democrats view Mueller positively.

Overall, voters view both Russian President Vladimir Putin and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange negatively.  Putin receives a net -65 (9 favorable vs. 74 unfavorable), and Assange -25 (16-41).  Some 43 percent have never heard of or can’t rate Assange.

Recently Trump tweeted about comments Rep. Ilhan Omar made about the 9/11 terrorist attacks.  Omar is a Democrat from Minnesota and one of the first Muslim women in the House.  Democrats view Omar more positively than negatively by 10 points.  Among Republicans, she has a net negative score by 43 points.  Half of all voters, 50 percent, don’t know enough about the congresswoman to have an opinion.

Trump is losing his on-going feud with the late Arizona Sen. John McCain:  by a 51-27 percent margin, more voters admire McCain than Trump.

Conducted April 14-16, 2019 under the joint direction of Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company (R), this Fox News Poll includes interviews with 1,005 randomly chosen registered voters nationwide who spoke with live interviewers on both landlines and cellphones.  The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points for all registered voters.

Thai activists protest against commission after chaotic poll

March 31, 2019

By Patpicha Tanakasempipat

BANGKOK (Reuters) – More than 100 opposition activists protested in central Bangkok on Sunday, accusing the election commission of delaying and manipulating the results of the first polls since a 2014 coup.

A week after the March 24 vote, the outcome of Thailand’s national election remains uncertain and might not be known until after the commission publishes official results due on May 9.

The body released partial results the night of the vote, and took four more days to publish fuller counts, showing a party supporting the ruling military junta winning the popular vote but the opposition Pheu Thai party ahead in partial results of House of Representatives seats.

Both the Palang Pracharat party – which seeks to keep junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha in office – and an anti-junta “democratic front” of seven parties, led by Pheu Thai, have claimed a mandate to form the next government.

“Get out! Stop cheating! Respect the people!” chanted the protesters close to the city’s Victory Monument.

They urged bystanders to add to the 830,000 signatures on an online petition to impeach the commission. The commission has declined to comment on criticism of its handling of the results.

The post-election standoff could raise tensions just as the Southeast Asian country prepares for the elaborate coronation of King Maha Vajiralongkorn in May.

On Saturday, the king issued an order revoking royal decorations that had been awarded to former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in an earlier 2006 army coup and is linked to the Pheu Thai party.

The move could hurt the standing of Thaksin and the affiliated party in the eyes of many Thais, because the monarchy is revered without question in Thai culture.

Thaksin-linked parties have won every election since 2001. The 2014 coup ousted a Pheu Thai-led government that had Thaksin’s sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, as prime minister.

Watch the game or have a pint? World Cup fans may face a choice

February 20, 2019

By Jack Tarrant

TOKYO (Reuters) – When an estimated 400,000 rugby fans descend on Japan later this year for the Rugby World Cup, finding a place to quench their thirst will not be a problem. Finding a bar to watch the game, however, could be.

Government figures show that while Tokyo has 217 bars per 100,000 people, the majority are ‘izakayas’, informal Japanese-style pubs where customers sit on the floor, at tables or at the bar to eat, drink and chat.

Watching live sport at an izakaya would be an alien concept to many and several of these establishments told Reuters they had no intention of screening games during the Sept. 20 to Nov. 2 rugby showpiece.

Hiroshi Matthews, who spent much of his childhood in Australia, says he loves not having the distraction of live sport blaring from a television when he is out with friends.

“I like that we meet in izakayas just to talk and don’t have to worry about people shouting at the television or listening to the commentary,” he said on a night out with three friends.

“I am a big basketball fan but I prefer to watch games at home, where I can fully concentrate on them.”

While some businesses are sticking their heads in the sand, others are rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of cashing in on one of world sport’s biggest events.

A study commissioned by Japan Rugby 2019 last year predicted the tournament could deliver nearly 216.6 billion JPY ($1.9 billion) of additive value to the Japanese economy.

Tsuyoshi Ohta, the president of a nationwide chain of British-style pubs that regularly show international sport, said ‘Hub’ had learned from Japan’s experience during the football World Cup in 2002 and that their 107 venues across the country were taking steps to prepare for the influx of rugby fans.

“We found that foreigners drink in the daytime, not like us who drink at night, usually at izakaya-style bars,” Ohta told Reuters in an interview. “We don’t have that kind of culture.

“So we have decided to open the store from noon and we would like to offer a casual setting for people to drink from lunchtime.”

Ohta also highlighted figures that showed Hub venues make 80 percent of their sales on drinks while at izakayas that figure is only 40 percent.

In preparation for the seven-week tournament, Hub has encouraged their staff to join an English language program and is opening a new venue just for the tournament in Fukuoka, which will host three World Cup matches, said Ohta.

A TURNING POINT

While football World Cups are often marred by fan violence, the rugby equivalent typically passes off without major incident and Ohta said there was a clear difference in the atmosphere at Hubs during the screening of the sports.

“Fans who come and watch rugby games are, in general, gentlemen and they are more likely to clap their opponents too. I don’t see that kind of scenario during soccer games,” said Ohta.

“I have seen a lot of people come to watch rugby games and I realised they are gentlemen. So, how they drink will be gentle as well.

“I am not really worried about bad behavior as much as I was when we have the soccer games.”

By bringing the Rugby World Cup to Asia for the first time, those at the top of the game hope it will ignite interest in the sport across the world’s most populous continent and open up new revenue streams.

Some 25 million people in Japan watched their Brave Blossoms team play against Samoa at the 2015 World Cup but World Rugby hope to smash that record at the 2019 tournament.

Establishing a Super Rugby team in Tokyo, the Sunwolves, was another move aimed at gaining a foothold in a potentially lucrative market and some fans think the World Cup could have a huge impact on not just the sport but how people enjoy it.

“It could change how people want to watch sport,” said Hiro Takeda, part of a small group of die-hard Sunwolves fans watching their team on television at a Hub near the club’s Chichibunomiya Stadium.

“It is better to watch together and I am looking ahead to watching with people visiting for the Rugby World Cup.”

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – The grounding of India’s Jet Airways is turning into a quick windfall and long-term opportunity for international airlines keen to scoop up nearly a million outbound passengers from what was once the nation’s biggest airline.

Jet, which previously had a fleet of around 120 largely Boeing Co planes, was forced to indefinitely halt all flight operations on April 17 after its banks rejected the carrier’s plea for emergency funds.

The carrier’s descent into crisis has benefited international airlines in the form of rising fares and demand, data showed.

Fares from India to cities such as Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Bali in the first quarter of 2019 rose between 4 percent and 32 percent from a year ago, according to Indian travel portal MakeMyTrip Ltd.

In the peak travel months of May and June, fares to London have spiked as much as 36 percent and tickets to San Francisco are up nearly 20 percent from a year ago, according to data from travel portal Yatra.com.

“For the next three months it’s actually bonanza time for international players,” said Ashish Nainan, a research analyst at CARE Ratings. “At least until the middle of June, the fares are not going to come down.”

Due to rising demand, even before Jet’s lessors grounded planes, carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines Ltd and United Airlines saw an up to a 27 percent increase in passenger numbers from India in the last quarter of 2018, data from India’s aviation regulator showed. That is the latest period for which the data is available.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, clocking 15-20 percent domestic growth in recent years. It has long had only two full-service long-haul carriers, state-run Air India and Jet.

Jet is now hoping to be bailed out by a new investor, with final bids due on May 10.

INCREASING CAPACITY

Before its grounding, Jet had the biggest share of India’s outbound international air traffic, carrying 12 percent of the 7.8 million passengers headed overseas in the Oct-Dec quarter, down from 14 percent a year earlier, data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.

For an interactive graphic on Jet’s market share, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2WvDQYi

For an interactive graphic on average daily flights by the airline, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2FeFDel

The total number of passengers traveling overseas with Jet fell 10 percent during the last quarter of 2018 even as the outbound travel market grew about 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines posted a 27 percent increase in passengers from India, Cathay registered 17 percent growth and British Airways saw a 10 percent rise in the same period.

Cathay said the events at Jet combined with increasing demand for travel had led it to deploy larger aircraft with more seats on some Indian routes.

“In the long term we would certainly like to be able to offer more capacity into India, not just on our existing routes but by establishing new services to secondary cities,” Cathay said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines, in an email to Reuters, said the Indian market is “very promising” but declined to give details of airfare levels or demand patterns in the wake of Jet’s exit, citing a quiet period before the release of its annual results.

DOMESTIC GAINS

Jet’s grounding has also had a big impact on the domestic market, with inter-city air fares to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata soaring more than 20 percent in May and June, according to Yatra.com.

The spike in fares is expected to underpin strong earnings for IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd, which are set to report results for the quarter ended March 31 in the coming weeks.

“Domestic Indian carriers are the main benefactors, but I suspect if Jet fails to be revived by May 10 then Vistara and other airlines that ply international routes, particularly the lucrative Gulf market, are the main winners,” said Shukor Yusof, the head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics. Vistara is a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

Inadequate bilateral traffic rights between India and other countries, however, could be an impediment to foreign carriers’ hopes of winning business lost by Jet, some analysts said.

“Even before Jet’s operational shutdown, international capacity was significantly constrained,” said Kapil Kaul, CEO for South Asia of consultancy CAPA. “We have now more serious capacity challenge … this is unlikely to be stabilized in the near term.”

A new national government likely to be in place sometime after elections end in May is expected to address the international capacity constraints, and once bilateral agreements are eased airlines including Emirates, Turkish and Qatar would immediately benefit, said Kaul.

“We would love to add more flights but we are at the limit of the allocation granted to us for traffic rights,” Emirates Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori told reporters in Dubai on Wednesday.

(Reuters) – AstraZeneca Plc beat first-quarter sales and earnings expectations on Friday as the British drugmaker benefited from a push into cancer drugs and emerging markets including China.

Newer treatments such as lung cancer drug Tagrisso, now the company’s top selling medicine, have helped the drugmaker’s return to growth after years of crumbling sales due to patent losses on older drugs.

Sales in China have shown explosive growth, more than doubling since 2012, but AstraZeneca executives on Friday said that may not be sustained.

“The enormous growth you currently see in China, 28 percent, probably is not sustainable, but we feel very bullish that the growth will continue to be at a pace of between 15 percent and 20 percent,” Ruud Dobber, executive vice president, BioPharma, told Reuters.

Shares of the company were down 0.2 percent at 5,878 pence at 1031 GMT.

The turnaround in AstraZeneca’s fortunes has been powered by a push into cancer treatments led by Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, who saw off a 2014 takeover bid from Pfizer in part by promising annual sales of $45 billion by 2023.

In the first quarter, sales from its oncology unit rose 59 percent to $1.89 billion, accounting for 35 percent of total product sales.

The company has moved deeper into cancer therapy market through wide-ranging deals, including those for immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Last month, it agreed a multi-billion dollar oncology deal with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd.

“We’re reaching that point where after years of having to keep faith, we have actually got something tangible to believe in,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett said.

AstraZeneca also backed its annual sales and earnings forecast and said it has extensively prepared for UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union, even in the event of a no-deal exit.

The company has already spent more than 40 million pounds ($52 million) on Brexit preparations, including stockpiling six weeks’ worth of drugs in the UK and four weeks in continental Europe to guard against shortages.

AstraZeneca said product sales rose 14 percent at constant currency to $5.47 billion in the quarter, led by its lung cancer drug Tagrisso and respiratory treatment Pulmicort.

China sales increased by 28 percent to $1.24 billion in the quarter, accounting for nearly a quarter of overall product sales.

Core earnings came in at 89 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts on average were expecting core earnings of 85 cents per share and product sales of $5.29 billion, according to a company provided consensus of 19 analysts.

It’s the type of crime that doesn’t happen every day.

Police in the suburbs of Philadelphia say three suspects broke into a medical facility in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, last Saturday and fled with 18 colonoscopies – devices used for examining the health of patients’ colons.

The devices were reportedly worth a total of about $450,000, authorities said.

But police were perplexed about what the suspects might have planned to do with the instruments.

“This is not something that a typical pawn shop might accept,” Lower Merion Police Detective Sergeant Michael Vice told Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV. “My feeling would be that it was some type of black market sales.”

Such a market apparently does exist, Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath told Philly.com.

“They appeared to know precisely where to go, and they pried the door open,” McGrath said of the suspects, who were captured on surveillance video leaving the facility, carrying bulging backpacks.

Police are hoping the suspects will be caught in the end.
