Admissions scandal is latest example of ‘elites’ betraying US institutions: Matthew Continetti

The scandal that’s rocking the higher education system is really about questioning the legitimacy of “elites” in this country, Washington Free Beacon editor-in-chief Matthew Continetti argued Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, law enforcement officials announced that 50 individuals had been indicted as part of a nationwide scheme involving wealthy parents committing fraud in order to get their children into prestigious universities. Among those indicted were TV actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin.

During Tuesday's "Special Report" All-Star panel, Continetti -- along with Federalist senior editor Mollie Hemingway and Reuters White House correspondent Jeff Mason -- weighed in on the massive controversy.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE FULL SHOW

Continetti began by insisting that “elites” of all stripes “bend the rules in their favor” by using their money and connections.

“This scandal just shows another sphere of American life where elites have betrayed our country’s institutions and indeed, our country’s people,” Continetti said.

“This scandal just shows another sphere of American life where elites have betrayed our country’s institutions and indeed, our country’s people.”

— Matthew Continetti, Washington Free Beacon editor-in-chief

He explained that the suspects may have gone to great lengths such as bribery to get their kids enrolled in top universities because a degree from such institutions can earn graduates “exponentially” higher salaries.

“We need to think about how our economy is structured so that this wage premium isn’t so slanted toward college degree holders,” Continetti added.

Hemingway called the allegations “stunning,” but predicted that the scandal “will lead to major changes” in how college admissions are operated similarly to how other industries have been reformed in recent years.

Meanwhile, Mason called the controversy “very sad” because of the “lesson” the parents were allegedly teaching to their children.

“They’re teaching their children that it’s OK to lie and that it’s OK to cheat. And it’s incredibly sad,” Mason told the panel.

European Commission’s Timmermans meets hostile reception in Hungary: report

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) – Local media and several unidentified people “intimidated” the lead candidate for the main left-leaning grouping in the European Parliament when he visited Hungary last week to campaign for the upcoming European elections, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported on Friday.

Frans Timmermans, of the Party of European Socialists, is broadly disliked by nationalist parties in Eastern Europe, including in Hungary. He was confronted throughout his visit by antagonistic media outlets who somehow knew his schedule, including parts which had not been made public, the paper said.

Timmermans, a Dutchman, is also vice-president of the European Commission and his commission tasks include promoting adherence to the rule of law, an issue that has led to friction between the EU and leaders in Hungary and Poland.

Timmermans could not be reached for comment.

Hungarian Socialist Party communications director Balazs Lang said on Friday that Timmermans had engaged with “in-your-face propagandists” who greeted him at almost every stop of the visit, which was aimed at drumming up support for the leftist alliance in the May European Parliament elections.

Lang said the Dutchman was surprised that questions from reporters were nearly identical, suggesting a coordinated campaign.

A clip of one such confrontation on YouTube showed a reporter from a Hungarian news outlet accusing Timmermans of trying to bring “refugees” into the country. When Timmermans tried to speak he was frequently cut off or called a liar.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party is at odds with its own right-leaning European ally, the European People’s Party.

Last week European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker called for Fidesz’s exclusion from the European Parliament’s biggest conservative faction due to its anti-immigrant rhetoric and stances.

De Telegraaf quoted Timmermans as saying he “should have expected such hostility from the governing party and its supporting media.”

“Still it’s weird to have to experience this in an EU member state.”

Timmermans is seen as instrumental in a proposal – supported by the bloc’s biggest net contributors – that would cut aid funds to countries that Brussels says are undermining the rule of law, a plan that could potentially cost Hungary and Poland millions of euros.

A European Union parliamentary report this year said media in Hungary has become increasingly concentrated in the hands of pro-Orban oligarchs, undermining freedom of the press.

Pakistan says it shot down 2 Indian warplanes, captured pilot

Pakistan’s air force shot down two Indian warplanes Wednesday after they crossed the Kashmir border and captured a pilot, a Pakistani military official said.

Tensions have been simmering in the region after India launched an airstrike Tuesday following a suicide bombing that killed more than 40 soldiers in India’s section of the disputed territory of Kashmir earlier this month.

Indian air force spokesman Anupam Banerjee in New Delhi told the Associated Press he has no information on the incident.

Tyrant tees: Vietnam T-shirt designer earns bread from Trump-Kim mania

HANOI (Reuters) – A T-shirt bearing the face of one of the world’s most infamous dictators would normally be a tough sell, one would think.

But in summit-mad Hanoi, where streets are being spruced up and businesses from bars to barbers are cashing in on a summit next week between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, anything sells.

“There’s no need to talk about Trump as he’s already a great man. Everybody knows that,” said T-shirt designer Truong Thanh Duc. “But we should always encourage Kim Jong Un to give up his dictatorship for his people”.

“That’s why I put his image on the T-shirt”.

Duc’s shirts have attracted a curious crowd in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, a bustling labyrinth of streets and market stalls popular with tourists.

Duc said he had sold more than 300 of his special edition shirts, the profits of which he said would go towards buying baguettes – which are popular in the former French colony – to distribute to poor people.

One of his shirts bears Kim’s face, enlarged across the length of it. Another shows Trump and Kim together above the word “PEACE”.

“I really admire these two leaders,” said Duc.

“One is the leader of the most technologically advanced country in the world and the other leader, although a bit extreme, has realized his people are too poor and he wants his nation to develop”.

Across the Vietnamese capital, preparations are well underway for the Feb. 27-28 summit. Parts of the city close to the expected venues have been tidied up or repainted.

One Hanoi barber is offering free Trump- or Kim-style haircuts, and bars are selling drinks named “Peace Negroniations” and “Kim Jong Ale”.

Duc is hopeful the summit can help promote reform.

“Kim Jong Un is a dictator but now he has changed,” said Duc.

“He has to give up that status to shake hands with the developed world”.

Trump Jr: Dems Trying to Distract Dad at Summit

President Donald Trump's eldest son is accusing Democrats of trying to distract his father during his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

Donald Trump Jr. told Fox News on Tuesday that he believed the Democrats deliberately scheduled the congressional testimony of Michael Cohen, the president's former fixer, opposite the summit in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Trump Jr. said that the Democrats were trying to "counterprogram the kind of progress" that could be achieved in the Vietnam gathering and that it was evidence of the "disdain" they hold for the president.

He also argued that it was proof the Democrats were more interested in scoring political points than in national security by attempting to "stymie" the denuclearization talks.

Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison for crimes including a campaign finance violation that he says was at the direction of the president.

Cotton, Wyden Want Senators to Be Alerted to Cyber Breaches

Sens. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., are asking the Senate Sergeant at Arms to alert lawmakers to any cyber breaches of Senate computers.

The two made the request in a letter to Senate Sergeant at Arms Michael Stenger. Details of their request were disclosed by The Hill.

Currently there is no requirement in Congress to reveal any breaches.

"Hackers continue to target all manner of government entities, and there is little doubt that Congress is squarely in their sights," they said in the letter. "The Sergeant at Arms must be transparent in providing members of the Senate all information about the possible existence and scale of successful hacks against the Senate.

"Each U.S. Senator deserves to know, and has a responsibility to know, if and how many times Senate computers have been hacked, and whether the Senate's existing cybersecurity measures are sufficient to protect both the integrity of this institution and the sensitive data with which it has been entrusted."

Wyden revealed last year that hackers had targeted personal email accounts of multiple senators and members of their staff.

(Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures were flat on Friday, as investors paused ahead of GDP data, which is expected to show the world’s largest economy maintained a moderate pace of growth in the first quarter.

Gross domestic product probably increased at a 2% annualized rate in the quarter as a burst in exports, strong inventory stockpiling and government investment in public construction projects offset a slowdown in consumer and business spending, according to a Reuters survey of economists.

The Commerce Department report will be published at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The GDP data comes as investors look for fresh catalysts to push the markets higher. The S&P 500 index is about 0.5% below its record high hit in late September, after surging nearly 17% this year.

First-quarter earnings have been largely upbeat, with nearly 78% of the 178 companies that have reported so far surpassing earnings estimates, according to Refinitiv data.

Wall Street now expects S&P 500 earnings to be in line with the year-ago quarter, a sharp improvement from the 2.3% fall expected at the start of April.

Amazon.com Inc rose 0.9% in premarket trading after the e-commerce giant reported quarterly profit that doubled and beat estimates on soaring demand for its cloud and ad services.

Ford Motor Co shares surged 8.5% after the automaker posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings largely due to strong pickup truck sales in its core U.S. market.

Mattel Inc jumped 8% after the toymaker beat analysts’ estimates for quarterly revenue, as a more diverse range of Barbie dolls powered sales in the United States.

At 6:52 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 35 points, or 0.13%. S&P 500 e-minis were down 1.5 points, or 0.05% and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 10.75 points, or 0.14%.

Among decliners, Intel Corp slumped 7.7% after it cut its full-year revenue forecast and missed quarterly sales estimate for its key data center business.

Rival Advanced Micro Devices declined 0.8%.

Oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp are expected to report results later in the day.

WARSAW (Reuters) – Germany could owe Poland more than $850 billion in reparations for damages it incurred during World War Two and the brutal Nazi occupation, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Germany, one of Poland’s biggest trade partners and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO, says all financial claims linked to World War Two have been settled.

The right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) has revived calls for compensation since it took power in 2015 and has made the promotion of Poland’s wartime victimhood a central plank of its appeal to nationalism.

PiS has yet to make an official demand for reparations but its combative stance towards Germany has strained relations.

“Poland lost not only millions of its citizens but it was also destroyed in an unusually brutal way,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who heads the Polish parliamentary committee on reparations, told Reuters in an interview.

“Many (victims) are still alive and feel deeply wronged.”

His comments come a month before European Parliament elections in which populist and nationalist parties are expected to do well. Poland will also hold national elections later this year, with PiS still well ahead of its rivals in opinion polls.

EU LARGESSE

Mularczyk said the reparations figure could amount to more than 10 times the estimated 100 billion euros ($111 billion) that Poland has received so far in European Union funds since it joined the bloc in 2004.

Germany is the biggest net donor to the EU budget and some Germans regard its contributions as generous compensation to recipient countries like Poland which suffered under Nazi rule.

In 1953 Poland’s then-communist rulers relinquished all claims to war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to free East Germany, also a Soviet satellite, from any liabilities. PiS says that agreement is invalid because Poland was unable to negotiate fair compensation.

Mularczyk said his committee hoped to complete its report on the reparations issue by Sept. 1, the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s invasion.

Accusing Berlin of playing “diplomatic games” over the issue, he said: “The matter is being swept under the rug (by Germany) … until it’ll be wiped from the memory, from people’s awareness.”

His comments come after the Greek parliament voted this month to seek billions of euros in German reparations for the Nazi occupation of their country.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States did not pay any money to North Korea as it sought the release of comatose American student Otto Warmbier.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump had approved payment of a $2 million bill from North Korea to cover its care of the college student, who died shortly after he was returned to the United States after 17 months in a North Korean prison.

Al-Qaida in Yemen is vowing to avenge beheadings carried out by Saudi Arabia this week — an indication that some of the 37 Saudis executed on terrorism-related charges were members of the Sunni militant group.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, as the branch is called, posted a statement on militant-linked websites on Friday, accusing the kingdom of offering the blood of the “noble children of the nation just to appease America.”

The statement says al-Qaida will “never forget about their blood and we will avenge them.”

U.S. ally Saudi Arabia on Tuesday executed 37 suspects convicted on terrorism-related charges. Most were believed to be Shiites but at least one was believed to be a Sunni militant.

His body was pinned to a pole in public as a warning to others.

For two friends with checkered pasts it was the luck of a lifetime: a 4 million-pound ($5.2 million) lottery win.

But Mark Goodram and Jon-Ross Watson may see their celebrations cut short.

The Sun newspaper reports that Britain’s National Lottery is withholding the payout as it investigates whether the men, who have a string of criminal convictions, used illicit means to buy the winning ticket.

The Sun said neither man has a bank account, leading lottery organizers to investigate how they obtained the bank-issued debit card that paid for the 10 pound ($13) scratch card.

Camelot, which runs the lottery, said Friday it couldn’t confirm details of the story because of winner-anonymity rules. The firm said it holds a “thorough investigation” if there is any doubt about a claim.
