Golf: Thompson, Ko and Kim fly into clubhouse lead at ANA

LPGA: ANA Inspiration - First Round

April 4, 2019

(Reuters) – Back at the site of the biggest win of her career and also her greatest heartbreak, American Lexi Thompson used a hot putter to earn a share of the first-round lead at the ANA Inspiration in California on Thursday.

Thompson complimented her caddie after switching clubs for her pitch into the par-five 18th, which she birdied for a three-under-par 69 matched by South Koreans Ko Jin-young and Kim Hyo-joo at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage.

They led by one stroke from a large group including American Jessica Korda and New Zealander Lydia Ko with half the field back in the clubhouse.

An ample serving of rough greeted the 112-woman field for the first major of the year, and Thompson found it more often than she would have liked on a day when her driving was not the straightest.

“It was a little bit of an up-and-down day,” American Thompson told reporters. “I hit some great shots and then hit some poor ones off the tee.

“I made some great putts, which is always a big confidence booster for me. Overall I could have hit it better, but still not complaining.”

Thompson’s lone major victory came at Mission Hills in 2014, but three years later she was in tears after incurring a four-stroke penalty for a putting rules violation on the way to losing a playoff to Ryu So-yeon.

Joint leader Ko continued the sizzling form that has made her the hottest player in the women’s game over the past few weeks.

She has a first, second and third in her past three LPGA starts, and Thursday was another good day at the office.

Asked what the key to her round was, Ko was succinct.

“I hit the fairway, so hit the green, two-putt, that’s it,” she said.

Compatriot Kim also came into the event in form after shooting 62 in the final round at the Kia Classic on Sunday.

“I really wanted to be able to take that level into this week of a major,” she said. “Everything really came together today.”

Western diplomats deny Thai accusation of protocol breach

Western diplomatic missions have responded to charges from Thailand's foreign ministry that they violated protocol by observing a Thai politician being charged by police with sedition, calling the action standard diplomatic practice.

They were responding Wednesday to Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai, who said foreign countries are barred from closely observing such internal procedures "not only by etiquette, but also by rules and regulations that the whole world abides by."

Thirteen foreign diplomats were present Saturday at a Bangkok police station where Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, leader of a popular new political party, acknowledged charges of sedition and other crimes. Thanathorn says the charges are politically motivated.

Thanathorn's Future Forward Party ran a strong third in last month's general election and positions itself as being opposed to political interference by Thailand's powerful military.

Brazil’s CAOA in talks to buy Ford factory: source

SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Brazilian automaker CAOA, which produces vehicles with Korea’s Hyundai Motor Co and China’s Chery Automobile Co, is in talks to buy a Ford Motor Co plant in the country that is slated to close by 2019, according to a source with direct knowledge of the matter.

Ford announced earlier this month that it would shut down its São Bernardo do Campo plant, a sprawling complex in a suburb of São Paulo that employs some 3,000 people.

In 2018, Ford said it used only 12 percent of its installed capacity in the plant, which is its oldest in the country. Shutting the plant is part of Ford’s wider move to stop producing heavy commercial trucks in South America. It also produces the Fiesta small car at the plant.

Negotiations have not been finalized, the source said.

Earlier on Tuesday, São Paulo governor João Doria said there were three companies interested in buying Ford’s plant, although he declined to name them. Doria has pledged to help find a buyer for the plant.

São Paulo state government declined to comment on CAOA talks with Ford. A Ford representative denied that CAOA had approached the automaker directly about buying the factory.

CAOA, which started as a chain of dealerships, has expanded into manufacturing in recent years, most recently purchasing half of a factory originally developed by China’s Chery. As part of the move, cars produced in the factory are now co-branded CAOA Chery.

CAOA is already Ford’s single largest distributor in the country.

Smollett Staged Attack to Boost Career, Dissatisfied with Making over $1,000,000 a year

Spread the love

Smollett turned himself in and was arrested early Thursday to face accusations that he filed a false police report when he told authorities he was attacked in Chicago by two men who hurled racist and anti-gay slurs and looped a rope around his neck, police said.

“He took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career,” Johnson told reporters at a news conference.

“This publicity stunt was a scar that Chicago didn’t earn and certainly didn’t deserve,” he later added.

The whispers about Smollett’s account started with reports that he had not fully cooperated with police after telling authorities he was attacked. Then detectives in a city bristling with surveillance cameras could not find video of the beating. Later, two brothers were taken into custody for questioning but were released after two days, with police saying they were no longer suspects. Johnson said Smollett paid the brothers $3,500 to stage the attack.

Following three weeks of mounting suspicions, Smollett was charged Wednesday with felony disorderly conduct, a charge that could bring up to three years in prison and force the actor, who is black and gay, to pay for the cost of the investigation into his report of a Jan. 29 beating.

Cohen Testimony Not Shifting GOP Base, Campaign Vets Say

The marathon testimony of Michael Cohen before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform certainly sounded ominous for President Donald Trump. Among other things, the lawyer charged his former client was a "racist" and a "liar."

But just over a week after Cohen began testifying, three seasoned Republican campaign operatives who spoke to Newsmax agreed he had not made a dent in the president's Republican base.

The analysis of the three echoed a Politico/Morning Consult poll released as Cohen began testifying showing 81 percent of Republicans viewed Trump favorably.

The same poll showed only 11 percent of self-identified Republicans believe there was collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, while 73 percent deny it.

"Grass roots Republicans, in my view, see the Cohen hearings as Washington noise," North Carolina's veteran political analyst Marc Rotterman told Newsmax.

Rotterman believes Cohen's televised salvos against Trump "only strengthen the president with his base. It may well drive many independents into his corner, as nothing seems to get accomplished that helps their families."

Lew Moore, longtime Washington state GOP operative and national campaign manager of Ron Paul's 2012 presidential campaign, agreed.

"Cohen's testimony appears to me to have minimal impact with the roots, and he evidently continues to lie, further damaging his credibility," Moore told us.

He added "grass roots folks I know are furious at what they see as double standards. In news media coverage, by social media companies, and at the Department of Justice, among other places. They see Trump as authentic, and effective in pursuing the conservative agenda, warts and all; while [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi and company are viewed as craven, posturing partisans whose policies have failed, and who are now empowering socialists."

"If Cohen's intent was to bring down the president, then he failed in epic fashion," said Chip Saltsman, former Tennessee Republican chairman and manager of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's 2008 presidential campaign.

The last week, in Saltsman's view, "has been played in Washington and the national media as bad for the president. Again, this is not the effect they were hoping for. The Republicans and independents I have been with think the Democrats have overplayed a weak hand."

Specifically, Saltsman cited "this last document request plus the [special counsel Robert] Mueller report is actually starting to play out as the witch hunt the president described many months ago.

"They are now looking desperate in finding something — anything — to justify all this nonsense. Meanwhile, in the rest of the country, they are seeing record low unemployment, better paying jobs, and companies coming back home."

Saltsman added, with the 2020 Democrats "fighting over who can quadruple the national debt quicker, eliminate any barriers for illegal immigration and give away the most stuff, I'm feeling optimistic for the president."

April 13, 2019

(Reuters) – Honda’s MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez took pole position at the Grand Prix of the Americas for the seventh year in a row on Saturday while title rival Andrea Dovizioso could manage only 13th place on the grid.

The Spaniard will be joined by Yamaha’s 40-year-old Italian great Valentino Rossi and British LCR Honda rider Cal Crutchlow on the front row for Sunday’s race at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Five-times MotoGP world champion Marquez, who set a best lap of two minutes 03.787 seconds, is unbeaten at the track and has won there for the past six seasons.

Italian great Rossi was 0.237 slower than Marquez as he qualified on the front row for the first time since Malaysia last October.

Marquez’s team mate and compatriot Jorge Lorenzo lost time when his bike had a chain problem and he had to lean it against the pitwall before jogging back to the garage for a spare bike. He qualified 11th.

Ducati’s Dovizioso, four points behind championship leader Marquez after two races, failed to make it through the first qualifying session.

The day’s final practice sessions were canceled due to the risk of lightning strikes but the bad weather then eased off in the afternoon, with qualifying run under blue skies.

A Florida measure that would ban sanctuary cities is set for a vote Friday in the state’s Senate after clearing its first hurdle earlier this week.

The bill would effectively make it against the law for Florida’s police departments to refuse to cooperate with federal immigration officials.

“The Governor may initiate judicial proceedings in the name of the state against such officers to enforce compliance,” a draft version of the Senate bill reads.

A House version of the bill, which passed by a 69-47 vote Wednesday, adds that non-complying officials could be suspended or removed from office and face fines of up to $5,000 per day. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign off on the measure, although it’s not clear which version.

FLORIDA MAY SEND A BIG MESSAGE TO SANCTUARY CITIES

LAWRENCE JONES: NEEDLES, DRUG USE AND HUMAN WASTE ARE THE NEW NORMAL IN SAN FRANCISCO

Florida is home to 775,000 illegal immigrants out of 10.7 million present in the United States, ranking the state third among all states.

Nine states — Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, North Carolina, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas — already have enacted state laws requiring law enforcement to comply with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Florida doesn’t have sanctuary cities like the ones in California and other states. But Republican lawmakers say a handful of their municipalities — including Orlando and West Palm Beach – are acting as “pseudo-sanctuary” cities, because they prevent law enforcement officials from asking about immigration status when they make arrests.

“There are still people here in the state of Florida, police chiefs that are just refusing to contact ICE, refusing to detain somebody that they know is here illegally,” Florida Republican Rep. Blaise Ingoglia said earlier this month. “So while the actual county municipality doesn’t have an actual adopted policy, they still have people in power within their sheriff’s department or police department that refuse to do it anyway.”

Florida’s Democratic Party has blasted the anti-Sanctuary measures, while the Miami-Dade Police Department says it should be up to federal authorities to handle immigration-related matters.

“House Republicans today sold out their communities to Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis by passing this xenophobic and discriminatory bill,” the state’s Democratic Party said Wednesday after the House passed their version of the bill. “It’s abhorrent that Republican members who represent immigrant communities are now turning their backs on their constituents and jeopardizing their safety.

“Florida has long stood as a beacon for immigrant communities — and today Republicans did the best they could to destroy that reputation,” they added.

By John Stonestreet and Belén Carreño

MADRID (Reuters) – Spain’s Vox party, aligned to a broader far-right movement emerging across Europe, has become the focus of speculation about last minute shifts in voting intentions since official polling for Sunday’s national election ended four days ago.

No single party is anywhere near securing a majority, and chances of a deadlocked parliament and a second election are high.

Leaders of the five parties vying for a role in government get final chances to pitch for power at rallies on Friday evening, before a campaign characterized by appeals to voters’ hearts rather than wallets ends at midnight.

By tradition, the final day before a Spanish election is politics-free.

Two main prizes are still up for grabs in the home straight. One concerns which of the two rival left and right multi-party blocs gets more votes.

The other is whether Vox could challenge the mainstream conservative PP for leadership of the latter bloc, which media outlets with access to unofficial soundings taken since Monday suggest could be starting to happen.

The right’s loose three-party alliance is led by the PP, the traditional conservative party that has alternated in office with outgoing Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s Socialists since Spain’s return to democracy in the 1970s.

The PP stands at around 20 percent, with center-right Ciudadanos near 14 percent and Vox around 11 percent, according to a final poll of polls in daily El Pais published on Monday.

Since then, however, interest in Vox – which will become the first far-right party to sit in parliament since 1982 – has snowballed.

It was founded in 2013, part of a broader anti-establishment, far-right movement that has also spread across – among others – Italy, France and Germany.

While it is careful to distance itself from the ideology of late dictator Francisco Franco, Vox’s signature policies include repealing laws banning Franco-era symbols and on gender-based violence, and shifting power away from Spain’s regional governments.

TRENDING

According to a Google trends graphic, Vox has generated more than three times more search inquiries than any other Spanish political party in the past week.

Reasons could include a groundswell of vocal activist support at Vox rallies in Madrid and Valencia, and its exclusion from two televised debates between the main party leaders, on the grounds of it having no deputies yet in parliament.

Conservative daily La Vanguardia called its enforced absence from Monday’s and Tuesday’s debates “a gift from heaven”, while left-wing Eldiario.es suggested the PP was haemorrhaging votes to Vox in rural areas.

Ignacio Jurado, politics lecturer at the University of York, agreed the main source of additional Vox votes would be disaffected PP supporters, and called the debate ban – whose impact he said was unclear – wrong.

“This is a party polling over 10 percent and there are people interested in what it says. So we lose more than we win in not having them (in the debates),” he said

For Jose Fernandez-Albertos, political scientist at Spanish National Research Council CSIC, Vox is enjoying the novelty effect that propelled then new, left-wing arrival Podemos to 20 percent of the vote in 2015.

“While it’s unclear how to interpret the (Google) data, what we do know is that it’s better to be popular and to be a newcomer, and that Vox will benefit in some form,” he said.

For now, the chances of Vox taking a major role in government remain slim, however.

The El Pais survey put the Socialists on around 30 percent, making them the frontrunners and likely to form a leftist bloc with Podemos, back down at around 14 percent.

The unofficial soundings suggest little change in the two parties’ combined vote, or the total vote of the rightist bloc.

That makes it unlikely that either bloc will win a majority on Sunday, triggering horse-trading with smaller parties favoring Catalan independence – the single most polarizing issues during campaigning – that could easily collapse into fresh elections.

The Amish population in Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County is continuing to grow each year, despite the encroachment of urban sprawl on their communities.

The U.S. Census Bureau says the county added about 2,500 people in 2018. LNP reports that about 1,000 of them were Amish.

Elizabethtown College researchers say Lancaster County’s Amish population reached 33,143 in 2018, up 3.2% from the previous year.

The Amish accounted for about 41% of the county’s overall population growth last year.

Some experts are concerned that a planned 75-acre (30-hectare) housing and commercial project will make it more difficult for the county to accommodate the Amish.

Donald Kraybill, an authority on Amish culture, told Manheim Township commissioners this week that some in the community are worried about the development and the increased traffic it would bring.

Fox News correspondent Geraldo Rivera has warned that if Democratic 2020 presidential candidates don’t take the crisis at the border seriously, they’ll do so at their own risk.

Speaking with “Fox & Friends” hosts on Friday morning, Rivera discussed the influx of candidates entering the race, including former Vice President Joe Biden, and gave an update on the newest developments at the border.

“If [Democrats] don’t take it seriously they ignore it at their peril,” Rivera said.

He went on to discuss the fact that Mexico is experiencing the same problems dealing with volumes of people at the border as the United States is. Processing facilities, as many have argued, are understaffed and underresourced, resulting in conditions that have been controversial.

“It is very, very difficult when hundreds and hundreds become thousands and thousands ultimately become tens of it is very difficult to have an orderly system,” he said.

Rivera asserted his opinion that the United States could lessen the influx of migrants coming into the country by investing in the development of Central American countries, where many are fleeing from violence and economic instability.

“I believe, as I have said before on this program, that we have to stop the source of the migrant explosion, by a comprehensive system of political and economic reform in Central America where people have the incentive to stay home,” Rivera said.

“I think we have help Mexico with its infrastructure. Mexico has a moral burden, as the president made very clear, not to let unchecked herds of desperate people flow through 2,000 miles of Mexican territory to get our southern border.”

Rivera also brought up President Trump’s controversial comments about Mexican immigrants during his campaign in 2016.

The Fox News correspondent said that having been so excited about Trump’s campaign, the comments made him feel “deflated” as a Hispanic American.

However, as the crisis at the border has accelerated over the last few years, Rivera argued that ultimately, the president’s comments weren’t incorrect.

“He is now in a position where he can justly say I was right, that the that the anarchy at the border doesn’t serve anybody,” Rivera said. “Maybe he said it in a language I felt was a little rough and insensitive, but there is no doubt.”
