Spanish judge issues warrant for North Korea embassy intruders: source

March 27, 2019

MADRID (Reuters) – A Spanish judge has issued international arrest warrants for two of the intruders who forced their way into North Korea’s embassy in Madrid last month and are currently believed to be in the United States, a judicial source said on Wednesday.

The warrants were issued for the group leader and another suspect after an investigation by a Spanish court found that they broke into the embassy, tried to persuade an official to defect and then stole computer equipment.

The suspected leader has been identified by the court in an official document as Adrian Hong Chang, a Mexican who is a U.S. resident. The other suspect sought in the arrest warrant is Sam Ryu, who is a U.S. citizen of Korean descent.

According the court’s official document, which was made public on Tuesday, Hong Chang is believed to have traveled to the United States a day after the raid and contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to pass on information about it. It was not clear how the court knew that the man had contacted the FBI.

Other judicial sources told Reuters the two arrest warrants are likely to be the first of many more since the group of intruders is believed to have had 10 members. The other suspects include South Korean citizens.

The U.S. State Department has said the U.S. government was not involved in the raid while the FBI said it is standard practice to neither confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation.

Three of the intruders took an embassy official into the basement and encouraged him to defect from North Korea. They identified themselves as members of a group who campaigned for the “liberation of North Korea”, the document said.

The Spanish court document gave a detailed account of the intruders’ movements before as well as during the intrusion, including their stay in a hotel and purchases of knives, balaclava masks and fake guns.

The embassy raid occurred shortly before the Feb. 27-28 summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump in Hanoi.

The group kept embassy staff tied up for several hours and then searched the premises for arms before leaving, at which point they separated into four groups and headed to Portugal.

Hong Chang then flew from Lisbon to New York.

In Spain the High Court has the power to investigate criminal offences, after which formal accusations are launched.

(Reuters) – Nike Inc reported a 7 percent rise in quarterly revenue on Thursday, boosted by strong sales on its app and website.

Total revenue rose to $9.61 billion from $8.98 billion, in line with analysts’ average estimate, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

The maker of Jordan sneakers reported a net income of $1.1 billion, or 68 cents per share, for the third quarter ended Feb. 28, compared with a net loss of $921 million, or 57 cents per share, a year earlier, when the company incurred a $2 billion charge related to U.S. tax reform.

Ex-Obama White House Counsel expects to be charged over Ukraine work: statement

April 11, 2019

By Mark Hosenball

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Gregory Craig, a former White House Counsel in the Obama administration, expects to be indicted this week on charges stemming from work for Ukraine in 2012, his lawyers said on Wednesday.

“We expect an indictment by the DC US Attorney’s Office at the request of the (Justice Department’s) National Security Division,” Craig’s lawyers William Taylor and William Murphy said in a statement.

Craig, White House Counsel for President Barack Obama for one year from January 2009, is expected to be charged with making false statements to the Justice Department but other charges could also be brought, sources familiar with the case said.

“Mr. Craig is not guilty of any charge and the government’s stubborn insistence on prosecuting Mr. Craig is a misguided abuse of prosecutorial discretion,” his lawyers said.

They said the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York “thoroughly investigated” the case and decided not to pursue charges.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Craig’s case is one of several that originated in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election and were later referred by Mueller to other U.S. prosecutors for further investigation.

Craig has been accused of lying to the Justice Department about his promotion of a 2012 report aimed at justifying the prosecution of a political enemy of Viktor Yanukovych, the Russian-aligned president of Ukraine at the time.

Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, the New York law firm that produced the report, settled with the Justice Department in January by promising to retroactively register as a foreign agent for Ukraine and agreeing to disgorge the $4.6 million it was paid for the work.

That settlement implicated Craig as the law firm partner who made “false and misleading” statements to the Justice Department unit that enforces the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), increasing the likelihood that Craig would be charged.

Skadden relied on those false statements in deciding not to register under FARA as it should have, the settlement says.

FARA is a law requiring a person lobbying or doing public relations for foreign interests to disclose that work to the Justice Department. It has rarely been prosecuted since it was enacted in 1938 with the aim of countering Nazi propaganda.

That changed with the May 2017 appointment of Mueller, who employed FARA to prosecute a number of people including U.S. President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The Skadden report examined efforts by the Ukrainian government to prosecute Yulia Tymoshenko, the country’s former head of government, who was convicted in 2011 of embezzlement and corruption charges and sentenced to seven years in prison.

Yanukovych’s government used the report to justify to the European Court of Human Rights Tymoshenko’s pretrial detention.

Craig becomes the second former Skadden lawyer who worked on the report to face charges.

Alex van der Zwaan, the Dutch son-in-law of one of Russia’s richest men, served 30 days in prison last year for lying to FBI agents about his communications with two former business partners of Manafort. Van der Zwaan’s case was brought by Mueller.

Man who dug secret tunnels faces trial over deadly fire

A trial opens this week for a wealthy stock trader charged with murder in the death of a man who was helping him dig a network of tunnels beneath his Maryland home when a fire erupted.

Jury selection is scheduled to start Monday for Daniel Beckwitt's trial in Montgomery County. The 27-year-old millionaire is charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the September 2017 death of 21-year-old Askia Khafra.

Prosecutors say Beckwitt recklessly endangered Khafra's life during his secretive campaign to build a bunker beneath his Bethesda home for protection from a nuclear attack.

Beckwitt's lawyers say Khafra's death was a tragic accident, not a crime.

Firefighters found Khafra's charred, naked body when they entered the burning home, which was littered with mounds of trash.

March 27, 2019

(Reuters) – Christian Pulisic scored his 10th goal for the United States before being substituted after picking up a knock in a 1-1 draw with Chile in a friendly in Houston on Tuesday.

Pulisic’s goal after three minutes was canceled out five minutes later by Oscar Opazo’s fierce strike, which appeared to take a deflection on its way into the net.

The United States are unbeaten after four matches under new head coach Gregg Berhalter, though they were under the cosh at times in the second half against the Copa America champions.

Pulisic, who will see out the season at Borussia Dortmund before moving to Chelsea, showed his class with the opening goal.

Put through by a deft Gyasi Zardes pass that sliced the Chile defense open, Pulisic calmly dinked the ball over onrushing goalkeeper Gabriel Arias.

The effort made Pulisic, at 20 years and 189 days, the youngest to score 10 goals for the national team, besting the previous mark held by Jozy Altidore (20 years, 337 days), U.S. Soccer figures showed https://www.ussoccer.com/stories/2018/11/15/14/39/20190326-feat-mnt-christian-pulisic-fastest-mnt-player-10-goals.

Pulisic sustained a right quad injury late in the first half and was substituted.

Malaysian ex-PM Najib due to go on trial over 1MDB-linked graft

By Rozanna Latiff

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Ten years to the day after he was sworn in, disgraced former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is expected to go on trial on Wednesday suspected of corruption linked to a multibillion-dollar scandal that brought down his government.

Najib faces seven charges in the first of several criminal proceedings he is due to face over suspected money laundering of $4.5 billion from state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

The trial relates to suspected transfers totaling 42 million ringgit ($10.3 million) into Najib’s bank account from SRC International, a former 1MDB unit.

Najib has pleaded not guilty to three counts of criminal breach of trust, three counts of money laundering and one count of abuse of power over the transfers, which involve a fraction of the $1 billion investigators allege made its way into his accounts.

Najib has consistently denied wrongdoing and says the charges against him are politically motivated.

Attorney-General Tommy Thomas is expected to deliver the prosecution’s opening statement at Kuala Lumpur High Court, Bernama state news agency reported.

The trial is due to begin at 0600 GMT.

Prosecutors are prepared to call more than 60 witnesses, and three of them – described as government and banking officials – could take the stand on Wednesday, Bernama said, quoting unnamed sources.

The trial was originally set to begin on Feb. 12, but was delayed pending appeals by Najib’s lawyers. On Monday, they asked the highest court to review its decision to lift the stay on the trial, media reported.

The review will be heard on Thursday by the Federal Court, though it was unclear whether it would delay proceedings in the High Court on Wednesday.

Prosecutor V. Sithambaram said it was up to the High Court judge to decide whether the trial should be delayed pending the review. One of Najib’s lawyers, Harvinderjit Singh, declined to comment.

The trial begins nearly a year after Malaysians voted Najib out of office in a general election, marked by public disgust over corruption and rising living costs, that surprisingly brought Mahathir Mohamad, 93, back to power.

Since losing the election, Najib has been slapped with a total of 42 criminal charges, most of them linked to 1MDB and other state entities. Nearly $300 million worth of goods and cash were found at properties linked to Najib after the election.

At least six countries, including the United States, Switzerland and Singapore, have launched money laundering and graft probes into 1MDB, set up by Najib in 2009.

As the trial date neared, Najib, Malaysia’s sixth prime minister, sought a radical change of image, painting himself as a victim of a vindictive government and trying to shed the image of a wealthy, elite politician. [L3N1ZV2LF]

(Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures were flat on Friday, as investors paused ahead of GDP data, which is expected to show the world’s largest economy maintained a moderate pace of growth in the first quarter.

Gross domestic product probably increased at a 2% annualized rate in the quarter as a burst in exports, strong inventory stockpiling and government investment in public construction projects offset a slowdown in consumer and business spending, according to a Reuters survey of economists.

The Commerce Department report will be published at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The GDP data comes as investors look for fresh catalysts to push the markets higher. The S&P 500 index is about 0.5% below its record high hit in late September, after surging nearly 17% this year.

First-quarter earnings have been largely upbeat, with nearly 78% of the 178 companies that have reported so far surpassing earnings estimates, according to Refinitiv data.

Wall Street now expects S&P 500 earnings to be in line with the year-ago quarter, a sharp improvement from the 2.3% fall expected at the start of April.

Amazon.com Inc rose 0.9% in premarket trading after the e-commerce giant reported quarterly profit that doubled and beat estimates on soaring demand for its cloud and ad services.

Ford Motor Co shares surged 8.5% after the automaker posted better-than-expected first-quarter earnings largely due to strong pickup truck sales in its core U.S. market.

Mattel Inc jumped 8% after the toymaker beat analysts’ estimates for quarterly revenue, as a more diverse range of Barbie dolls powered sales in the United States.

At 6:52 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 35 points, or 0.13%. S&P 500 e-minis were down 1.5 points, or 0.05% and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were up 10.75 points, or 0.14%.

Among decliners, Intel Corp slumped 7.7% after it cut its full-year revenue forecast and missed quarterly sales estimate for its key data center business.

Rival Advanced Micro Devices declined 0.8%.

Oil majors Exxon Mobil Corp and Chevron Corp are expected to report results later in the day.

WARSAW (Reuters) – Germany could owe Poland more than $850 billion in reparations for damages it incurred during World War Two and the brutal Nazi occupation, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

Some six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war and Warsaw was razed to the ground following a 1944 uprising in which about 200,000 civilians died.

Germany, one of Poland’s biggest trade partners and a fellow member of the European Union and NATO, says all financial claims linked to World War Two have been settled.

The right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) has revived calls for compensation since it took power in 2015 and has made the promotion of Poland’s wartime victimhood a central plank of its appeal to nationalism.

PiS has yet to make an official demand for reparations but its combative stance towards Germany has strained relations.

“Poland lost not only millions of its citizens but it was also destroyed in an unusually brutal way,” Arkadiusz Mularczyk, who heads the Polish parliamentary committee on reparations, told Reuters in an interview.

“Many (victims) are still alive and feel deeply wronged.”

His comments come a month before European Parliament elections in which populist and nationalist parties are expected to do well. Poland will also hold national elections later this year, with PiS still well ahead of its rivals in opinion polls.

EU LARGESSE

Mularczyk said the reparations figure could amount to more than 10 times the estimated 100 billion euros ($111 billion) that Poland has received so far in European Union funds since it joined the bloc in 2004.

Germany is the biggest net donor to the EU budget and some Germans regard its contributions as generous compensation to recipient countries like Poland which suffered under Nazi rule.

In 1953 Poland’s then-communist rulers relinquished all claims to war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to free East Germany, also a Soviet satellite, from any liabilities. PiS says that agreement is invalid because Poland was unable to negotiate fair compensation.

Mularczyk said his committee hoped to complete its report on the reparations issue by Sept. 1, the 80th anniversary of Hitler’s invasion.

Accusing Berlin of playing “diplomatic games” over the issue, he said: “The matter is being swept under the rug (by Germany) … until it’ll be wiped from the memory, from people’s awareness.”

His comments come after the Greek parliament voted this month to seek billions of euros in German reparations for the Nazi occupation of their country.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said the United States did not pay any money to North Korea as it sought the release of comatose American student Otto Warmbier.

The Washington Post reported on Thursday that Trump had approved payment of a $2 million bill from North Korea to cover its care of the college student, who died shortly after he was returned to the United States after 17 months in a North Korean prison.

Al-Qaida in Yemen is vowing to avenge beheadings carried out by Saudi Arabia this week — an indication that some of the 37 Saudis executed on terrorism-related charges were members of the Sunni militant group.

Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, as the branch is called, posted a statement on militant-linked websites on Friday, accusing the kingdom of offering the blood of the “noble children of the nation just to appease America.”

The statement says al-Qaida will “never forget about their blood and we will avenge them.”

U.S. ally Saudi Arabia on Tuesday executed 37 suspects convicted on terrorism-related charges. Most were believed to be Shiites but at least one was believed to be a Sunni militant.

His body was pinned to a pole in public as a warning to others.

For two friends with checkered pasts it was the luck of a lifetime: a 4 million-pound ($5.2 million) lottery win.

But Mark Goodram and Jon-Ross Watson may see their celebrations cut short.

The Sun newspaper reports that Britain’s National Lottery is withholding the payout as it investigates whether the men, who have a string of criminal convictions, used illicit means to buy the winning ticket.

The Sun said neither man has a bank account, leading lottery organizers to investigate how they obtained the bank-issued debit card that paid for the 10 pound ($13) scratch card.

Camelot, which runs the lottery, said Friday it couldn’t confirm details of the story because of winner-anonymity rules. The firm said it holds a “thorough investigation” if there is any doubt about a claim.
