March 16, 2019

Aaron Judge smacked a three-run homer to help the New York Yankees roll to a 14-1 victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Friday at Tampa, Fla.

Judge’s blast over the fence in right-center came off right-hander Adam Lau in the second inning and was his fifth of the spring. He relished the fact the homer came on an 0-2 pitch.

“Getting results like that are always good, but I’m looking more at the quality of at-bats,” Judge told reporters afterward. “You never know — I could get jammed on three pitches and get three hits. They could be terrible swings, or I can take three solid swings and have nothing to show for it.

Andrew Benintendi had two of Boston’s six hits and scored the lone run.

Phillies 3, Blue Jays 2

Bryce Harper left in the sixth inning after being hit by a pitch on the right ankle and host Philadelphia later pushed two runs across in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Toronto at Clearwater, Fla. Freddy Galvis and Kevin Pillar homered for Toronto.

Twins 12, Orioles 9

Ehire Adrianza drove in four runs and belted two of Minnesota’s six homers in the victory over visiting Baltimore at Fort Myers, Fla. Drew Jackson hit a two-run blast for the Orioles.

Nationals 11, Mets 3

Yan Gomes and Anthony Rendon smacked two homers apiece and Washington went deep seven times while routing host New York at Port St. Lucie, Fla. Robinson Cano went 1-for-3 for the Mets as his average dropped to .406.

Rays (ss) 7, Tigers 3

Yandy Diaz homered and had four RBIs to help Tampa Bay knock off visiting Detroit at Port Charlotte, Fla. Jeimer Candelario had a two-run double for the Tigers.

Marlins 7, Braves 6

Pedro Alvarez delivered the tiebreaking RBI single in the top of the ninth and Harold Ramirez added one for insurance as Miami edged Atlanta at Kissimmee, Fla. Josh Donaldson hit his first homer of the spring — a two-run shot — for the Braves.

Rockies 2, Royals 1

Ryan McMahon recorded the game-winning single with none out in the bottom of the ninth inning as Colorado edged Kansas City at Scottsdale, Ariz. Jorge Soler had a run-scoring single for the Royals.

Cubs 11, White Sox 9

Albert Almora Jr. homered and drove in three runs as the Cubs outlasted the host White Sox in the battle of Chicago teams at Glendale, Ariz. Yoan Moncada hit a three-run blast for the White Sox.

Angels (ss) 2, Diamondbacks 1

Albert Pujols hit a two-run blast in the third inning as Los Angeles edged visiting Arizona at Tempe, Ariz. The Diamondbacks’ lone run scored in the fifth inning on a wild pitch by Angels right-hander Luke Bard.

Brewers 6, Padres 2

Eric Thames hit a two-run double in a three-run first inning as Milwaukee defeated visiting San Diego at Phoenix. The Padres had four hits, all singles.

Rangers 5, Indians 2

Ronald Guzman drove in two runs to help host Texas defeat Cleveland at Surprise, Ariz. Trayce Thompson homered for the Indians.

Angels (ss) 5, Giants 5

Cesar Puello hit a two-run ground single in the top of the sixth inning as Los Angeles gained a tie with host San Francisco at Scottsdale, Ariz. Anthony Garcia homered and had three RBIs for the Giants.

A Trump speech condemning anti-Muslim bigotry would be 'welcome gesture': Josh Kraushaar

President Trump condemned Friday's massacre in Christchurch, New Zealand, but National Journal politics editor Josh Kraushaar suggested that the president go beyond the remarks he gave at the White House.

The shootings at two mosques left at least 49 dead and dozens more injured. At the White House, Trump called the attack “evil,” but said he didn’t believe that white supremacy violence was on the rise, and said such acts were perpetrated by only a small group of people.

Still, many Democrats and members of the mainstream media have been linking Trump to the terrorist attack and pointing to his past rhetoric, which the critics contend was motivation for the shooting suspect, who referred to the president in his manifesto.

During Friday's "Special Report" All-Star panel, Kraushaar -- along with Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen and the Federalist senior editor Mollie Hemingway -- weighed in on the fallout of the New Zealand attack and the president’s response.

Thiessen began by knocking the left’s “reflex” action of blaming Trump and guns after every mass shooting. He noted the hypocrisy of the left, which refused to connect Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., to the Alexandria, Va., shooting of U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., at the hands of a former Sanders campaign worker.

“If you want to find someone to blame," Thiessen said, "social media is a good place to start. Social media is the accelerant that allows these things to happen."

He then recounted how the New Zealand suspect allegedly live-streamed the attack on Facebook, shared it on YouTube, and engaged with other white nationalists on platforms like Reddit and Twitter.

Kraushaar agreed with Thiessen on the significance of social media in such attacks, but insisted that President Trump could have more forcefully denounced such violence.

“It would be a welcome gesture for President Trump not just to respond in the Oval Office but to give a speech condemning anti-Muslim bigotry and really giving a message from the White House to the rest of the world that this type of rhetoric that inspired this white supremacist killer is absolutely unacceptable,” Kraushaar said.

Meanwhile, Hemingway urged everyone in the media not to “highlight” the killers of these attacks but to focus on the victims instead. She also cautioned against spreading news about the manifesto, saying it could potentially sow divisions among Americans.

“Responsible media outlets should make sure that they’re careful about how they talk about it so that these acts of hatred don’t further spread,” Hemingway said. “Sometimes downplaying the significance of what the hater believed can be helpful and just focusing people on loving one another and not letting these acts of evil overcome.”

Syrian ‘Refugee’ Gang Rape Leader Charged as Child Despite Being 22 Years Old

Spread the love

The reason for the case taking place in juvenile court, rather than an adult court, is due to claims that the 22-year-old was under the age of 21 when the gang rape occurred. New reports also reveal that he is being charged with eight more crimes including the suspect rape of a 19-year-old in 2017 German tabloid BILD reports.

Majd H. who came to Germany in 2014 from Syria and is believed to have links to Kurdish militia groups, is said to have been the leader of the gang rape of a German teen alongside eight other men aged between 19 and 30 outside of a local nightclub over a period of around four hours.

The spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office Martina Wilke has revealed that Majd H. is currently being charged with a total of eight different crimes including another gang rape in a Freiburg apartment in September 2017 along with two other men aged 22 and 23-years-old.

Between the period of April to August of 2018, the 22-year-old Syrian is accused of several crimes including several cases of dangerous bodily harm, assault, acquisition and trafficking of narcotics, attempted sexual assault, and acts of exhibitionism.

The gang-rape case caused widespread condemnation in Germany from various figures including populist Alternative for Germany co-chair Alice Weidel who reacted to the case saying, “The brutalisation of our country by these scum can no longer be endured!”

The case is the second major rape to involve asylum seekers and follows the rape and murder of student Maria Ladenburger in 2017 who was raped and strangled then left to drown in a river by Afghan asylum seeker Hussein Khavari.

Initially, Khavari too sought to claim he was underage, but tests, along with witness testimony from his own father, revealed that he had been an adult. Like Majd H. he had also been accused of crimes in the past including attempted murder of a girl in Greece before coming to Germany.

Buffett says Apple content plan hard to predict, touts airline safety

(Reuters) – Warren Buffett on Thursday said he could not predict the success of Apple Inc’s new suite of services but was confident the public would benefit as content providers vie for their wallets.

The billionaire chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Inc, which owns big stakes in the four largest U.S. airlines, also said that industry would weather fears about safety even after Boeing Co’s 737 MAX planes were pulled from service.

He also said the pace of growth in the U.S. economy, which expanded at a 2.2 percent annualized rate in last year’s fourth quarter, appeared to have slowed down, but “that doesn’t change anything we do” at Berkshire.

“You really want to bet on America,” said Buffett, who was speaking in Grapevine, Texas at an event broadcast by CNBC.

Apple on Monday announced an ambitious plan to reorient itself as an entertainment and financial services company, including a plunge into video streaming and the launch of a Goldman Sachs-branded credit card.

Buffett, whose company owned $40.3 billion of Apple stock at year end, said the iPhone maker “can afford a mistake or two” as companies such as Amazon.com Inc, Netflix Inc and Walt Disney Co compete for customer attention.

“Eyeballs aren’t going to double,” he said. “That’s not an easy game to predict, because you have very smart people with lots of resources trying to figure out how to grab another half hour of your time.”

But he said a decade from now, as the delivery of entertainment content improves, “the public will be the winner.”

Buffett also defended Berkshire’s roughly one-tenth stakes in American Airlines Group Inc, Delta Air Lines Inc, Southwest Airlines Co and United Continental Holdings Inc, despite problems with the 737 MAX.

Berkshire began amassing those stakes in 2016, surprising many investors because Buffett had viewed the sector as too competitive and capital-intensive after making an investment in USAir Group he later regretted.

“I don’t think it’s a suicidal business any more,” he said on Thursday.

Buffett added that Boeing, which has not been a Berkshire investment, “has a lot of work to do very promptly,” but that “the airline industry has been so safe.”

Buffett also showed his usual humor, prompting audience laughter as he removed a flip phone from his pocket during the Apple discussion.

“Alexander Graham Bell lent it to me and I forgot to return it,” said Buffett, 88, who was born eight years after the telephone inventor died.

DOJ Asks SCOTUS to Hear Case on Census Citizenship Question

The Department of Justice has asked the Supreme Court to hear a case involving whether a question about citizenship on the U.S. Census violates the Constitution, Talking Points Memo reports.

Solicitor General Noel Francisco sent a letter to the Supreme Court on Monday asking the court to weigh in on an appeal of a New York case following a California judge's ruling the question is unconstitutional.

"In light of that finding, only if the Court addresses respondents' Enumeration Clause claim can its decision definitively resolve whether the Secretary may reinstate a question about citizenship to the 2020 decennial census," Francisco wrote.

The Supreme Court already is scheduled to hear oral arguments about a New York case involving the citizenship question, in which a federal judge ruled the Trump administration violated the Administrative Procedure Act, but did not rule on whether the question itself is allowed by the Constitution.

"In the alternative, if the Court has any concerns about addressing respondents' Enumeration Clause claim in this case, it should grant the government's petition in the California case and consolidate that case with this one for oral argument," Francisco wrote.

Cyprus police chief: women’s murders ‘unprecedented’ crime

Cyprus' police chief says the discovery of two dead female bodies down an abandoned mineshaft and the disappearance of the six year-old daughter of one of the victims are "unprecedented" in the east Mediterranean island nation's history.

Zacharias Chrysostomou said Monday an ongoing murder probe will be conducted "meticulously" so that the case is airtight when presented in court.

The suspect in the killings, a 35 year-old Greek Cypriot military officer, remains in custody. One of the victims has been identified as a 38 year-old Filipino woman who is the mother of the missing child.

Chrysostomou said it's premature to estimate the scale of the crimes committed and pledged that police will take corrective steps where needed amid a public outcry in how missing persons cases were handled.

A 5-year-old boy who was seriously injured when he was thrown from a third-floor balcony at the Mall of America near Minneapolis remains hospitalized.

Friends of the family have started a crowdfunding effort to help with medical bills. The GoFundMe campaign had raised nearly $400,000 as of Sunday morning.

Bloomington Police Chief Jeffrey Potts said Sunday that the boy is "still alive and receiving care," and that the family wants privacy. Children's Hospital Minneapolis had no information to release.

Authorities haven't released the boy's name. They say he fell nearly 40 feet after a man threw him off the balcony Friday.

Twenty-four-year-old Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, of Minneapolis, is jailed on a suspicion of attempted homicide charge. Jail records don't list an attorney for him. He could be formally charged as early as Monday.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The Federal Reserve may lower the interest it pays on excess reserves banks leave with it by 5 basis points at its April 30-May 1 policy meeting in a bid to prevent the federal funds rate from drifting higher, Morgan Stanley analysts said on Friday.

This would mark the third such “technical” adjustment on the interest on excess reserves (IOER) following cuts last June and December.

Tennis - Australian Open - Women's Singles Final
FILE PHOTO: Tennis – Australian Open – Women’s Singles Final – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, January 26, 2019. Japan’s Naomi Osaka attends a news conference after winning her match against Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova. REUTERS/Adnan Abidi

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – World number one Naomi Osaka came from behind in the final set to beat Croatian Donna Vekic 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) on Friday and move into the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix semi-finals.

Osaka comfortably won the opening set but was tested by the Croatian, who pushed her to the limit in the second and third. The Japanese made 45 unforced errors as she struggles to get to grips with swapping hard courts for clay.

Osaka was visibly frustrated and trailed 5-1 in the final set but she refused to give up and found her rhythm to break Vekic twice and prevent her from serving for the match.

In the tiebreaker, a confident Osaka upped her baseline game and had two early mini breaks before wrapping up the match in two hours and 18 minutes. An infuriated Vekic even smashed her racket after losing the match.

“I told myself I didn’t want to have any regrets here,” Osaka said. “I was stressed out when I went down 1-5… but this (comeback) was pretty good because I don’t play really well on clay.”

Earlier, world number three Petra Kvitova came back from a set down to beat Anastasija Sevastova 2-6 6-2 6-3 and move into the tournament’s semi-finals for the third time in her career.

Sevastova had a dream start, breaking Kvitova twice to take a 3-0 lead as the Czech struggled with her first serve. Kvitova also made a slew of unforced errors, with many of her returns going long.

Sevastova used the full width of the court to get the better of Kvitova, who played on the back foot for much of the first set as the Latvian gave her little time to catch her breath.

However, Kvitova recovered in the second set and she broke Sevastova’s serve when she was 3-2 up, winning 10 straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Sevastova looked shaken and was broken again to give Kvitova the second set.

Kvitova took command in the final set and broke a visibly upset Sevastova to take a 3-1 lead before easing into the semis.

“In the first set I missed almost everything. I was pretty slow and she just couldn’t miss,” Kvitova said. “In the second set it was very important for me to stay on my serve and the chance to break her came.”

Kiki Bertens plays Angelique Kerber later on Friday and Victoria Azarenka faces Anett Kontaveit in the last quarter-final.

The Latest on fatal pileup on Interstate 70 near Denver (all times local):

10:10 a.m.

Colorado officials say four people have died after a semi-truck hauling lumber plowed into vehicles on Interstate 70, causing a fire so intense that it melted the roadway and metal off of cars.

Authorities had to wait until daylight Friday to confirm the death toll from Thursday’s 28-vehicle pileup because of the devastation caused by the fire.

Six people were taken to hospitals with injuries. Their conditions are unclear.

Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman says the driver of the truck who caused the crash sustained minor injuries. He has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

Officials say the driver was headed down a hill when he slammed into slower traffic. Countryman says there is no indication the crash was intentional.

7:40 a.m.

A truck driver blamed for causing a deadly pileup involving over two dozen vehicles near Denver has been arrested on vehicular homicide charges.

Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman said Friday that there’s no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role in Thursday’s crash.

The unidentified driver was headed down a hill on Interstate 70 when he slammed into slower traffic and sparked a massive fire. Countryman said police are looking at whether his brakes were working properly.

He said 28 vehicles were involved, up from the initial 15 vehicles police reported after further sorting through the burned wreckage.

Police still say there were multiple fatalities but are still working to provide an exact number.

The highway is expected to remain closed until Saturday.

Tiger woods celebrates after winning the 2019 Masters
FILE PHOTO: Golf – Masters – Augusta National Golf Club – Augusta, Georgia, U.S. – April 14, 2019 – Tiger Woods of the U.S. celebrates on the 18th hole after winning the 2019 Masters. REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson

April 26, 2019

Tiger Woods is sending a message that he thinks he still has enough left, emotionally and physically, to win three more major championships to tie Jack Nicklaus’ record 18 titles.

Speaking to GolfTV in his first sit-down interview since the Masters, Woods said he has taken some time off since his victory at Augusta National, which still doesn’t feel real.

“Honestly, it’s hard to believe,” Woods said. “I was texting one of my good friends last night … that I couldn’t believe that I won the tournament. That it really hasn’t sunk in. I haven’t started doing anything. I’ve just been laying there. And every now and again, I’ll look over there on the couch and there’s the jacket.”

That’s the fifth green jacket for the 43-year-old Woods, who hadn’t won a major tournament since the 2008 U.S. Open. Along the way, four back surgeries, a divorce and other personal issues derailed him.

He said he has been spending time with his children – daughter Sam, 11, and son Charlie, 10 – who weren’t born when their father was the most dominant golfer on the planet.

“They never knew golf to be a good thing in my life and only the only thing they remember is that it brought this incredible amount of pain to their dad and they don’t want to ever want to see their dad in pain,” Woods said. “And so to now have them see this side of it, the side that I’ve experienced for so many years of my life, but I had a battle to get back to this point, it feels good.”

He said he hopes – maybe expects — they’ll see this side again.

And no one will take Woods for granted at the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black Course on Long Island, N.Y., which starts May 16.

Woods said he’ll be ready for a course he already conquered once in a major: the 2002 U.S. Open.

“I’m doing all the visual stuff, but I haven’t put in the physical work yet. But it’s probably coming this weekend,” he said.

Before Woods encountered health and personal problems, it was expected that topping Nicklaus’ major mark was “when” and not “if.” Then the certainty went away, but Woods thought he still had a chance.

“I always thought it was possible, if I had everything go my way. It took him an entire career to get to 18, so now that I’ve had another extension to my career – one that I didn’t think I had a couple of years ago – if I do things correctly and everything falls my way, yeah, it’s a possibility. I’m never going to say it’s not.

“Now I just need to have a lot of things go my way, and who’s to say that it will or will not happen? That’s what the future holds, I don’t know. The only thing I can promise you is this: that I will be prepared.”

Maria Butina, the Russian woman who was accused of being a secret agent for the Russian government, was sentenced to 18 months in prison Friday by a federal judge in Washington after pleading guilty last year to a conspiracy charge.

Butina, who has already served nine months behind bars, will get credit for time served and can possibly get credit for good behavior, the judge said. She will be removed from the U.S. promptly on completion of her time, the judge added, and returned to Russia.

MARIA BUTINA, ACCUSED RUSSIAN SPY, PLEADS GUILTY TO CONSPIRACY

An emotional and apologetic Butina said in court Friday she is “truly sorry” and regrets not registering as a foreign agent.

“I feel ashamed and embarrassed,” she said, adding that her “reputation is ruined.”

Butina has been jailed since her arrest in July 2018. She entered the court Friday wearing a dark green prison jumpsuit and spoke in clear English, with a slight Russian accent.

“Please accept my apologies,” Butina said.

Butina’s lawyer, Robert Driscoll, said after the sentencing they had hoped for a “better outcome,” but expressed a desire for Butina to be released to her family by the fall.

Prosecutors had claimed Butina used her contacts with the National Rifle Association and the National Prayer Breakfast to develop relationships with U.S. politicians and gather information for Russia.

Prosecutors also have said that Butina’s boyfriend, conservative political operative Paul Erickson, identified in court papers as “U.S. Person 1,” helped her establish ties with the NRA.

WHO IS MARIA BUTINA, THE RUSSIAN WOMAN ACCUSED OF SPYING ON US?

In their filings, prosecutors claim federal agents found Butina had contact information for people suspected of being employed by Russia’s Federal Security Services, or FSB, the successor intelligence agency to the KGB. Inside her home, they found notes referring to a potential job offer from the FSB, according to the documents.

Investigators recovered several emails and Twitter direct message conversations in which Butina referred to the need to keep her work secret and, in one instance, said it should be “incognito.” Prosecutors said Butina had contact with Russian intelligence officials and that the FBI photographed her dining with a diplomat suspected of being a Russian intelligence agent.

Fox News’ Jason Donner, Bill Mears, Greg Norman and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
