Rep. Tim Ryan, weighing 2020 run, warns Democrats perceived as 'hostile to business'

CONCORD, N.H. – Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan, who is considering a 2020 presidential run, said Wednesday that his party has to be “very careful” not to appear too anti-business as it tries to win back the White House.

“I think we’ve got to be very careful. We come off sometimes as hostile to business,” the Ohio congressman lamented as he spoke with Fox News and two New Hampshire news organizations on Wednesday.

TIM RYAN MULLING 2020 BID

The comments come a day after Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has played an influential role pulling presidential candidates to the left on several issues, entered the White House race. Ryan, who raised his national profile with an unsuccessful leadership challenge against Nancy Pelosi in 2016, said Wednesday he’s “getting close” to making his own decision on whether to run for president.

Ryan argued that to get things accomplished, “we’ve got to come together. And that includes being engaged with the business community. You can be hostile to greed, you can be hostile to income inequality, to can be for raising raises…but you can’t be hostile businesses because 98 percent of businesses are small business people.”

“We can’t green the economy without the power of the free-market system,” he added.

Ryan spoke during a three-day swing through the first-in-the-nation primary state of New Hampshire. The trip is full of private meetings with leading Democratic state and local lawmakers, rainmakers and union leaders.

Ryan, who made multiple trips to New Hampshire over the past two years, said: “I think there’s plenty of time to get to know people in Iowa and New Hampshire and the early states and raise the kind of money that you would need. I think you’ve got to make a decision soon, but I’m not feeling like we missed the opportunity.”

SANDERS RAISES $6 MILLION IN 1ST 24 HOURS IN RACE

Asked how he could compete for the nomination with candidates with bigger bank accounts and much stronger name ID, Ryan cited one-time longshot candidates Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Donald Trump, who all made it to the White House.

“Nobody thought any of them had a chance to win. So my bet would be conventional wisdom never really works out,” he highlighted.

If he runs, Ryan may very well face competition from within his own state. Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio is visiting the early voting primary and caucus states as he moves toward a possible presidential run.

“We kind of come from the same kind of place,” Ryan said as he welcomed a Brown campaign for president.

But Ryan admitted that he and Brown could take votes from each other, saying “there probably would be some of that.”

Ryan said he’d stand out in a large field of 2020 Democratic contenders because of his experience living in northeast Ohio, where he’s watched “this economic train wreck happen to my family, my friends, my community ... and in 16 years in Congress, I’ve been working extremely hard to rebuild these communities.”

Ryan, a nine-term congressman who was one of the leaders of the failed intra-party attempt to prevent Pelosi returning to the speakership, also took aim at Republican President Trump.

“I’m very concerned with where the country is right now. I don’t think we have a long term game plan. We’re divided,” he charged. “The tax cut didn’t work and the volatility and the division is killing us.”

Ahead of his trip, the Republican National Committee targeted the congressman for his “embrace of government-run healthcare and sky high taxes.”

“Tim Ryan is just another out-of-touch 2020 wannabe that will ultimately fail when stacked up against President Trump's record of success,” added RNC Spokesperson Mandi Merritt.

Prosecutor: Charges not certain in 5th grader’s fight death

A prosecutor says it's too early to say whether there will be any criminal charges in the investigation into the death of a fifth grader during an elementary school fight in South Carolina.

Solicitor Duffie Stone said Friday tests will need to be done on tissue and other samples taken from 10-year-old Raniya Wright's body before any determination can be made if a crime was committed.

Authorities say the girl got into a fight Monday at Forest Hills Elementary School in Walterboro and died at the hospital two days later. The other fifth grader involved in the fight has been suspended.

Colleton County Sheriff Andy Strickland says it may take several weeks to conclude the investigation into the girl's death. He says his deputies are using every resource they have.

FIFA head wants refs to end soccer games if racism persists

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called for a crackdown on racism at soccer games after several high-profile incidents, and encouraged referees to abandon matches in the worst cases.

The head of world soccer's governing body says "we will not hesitate to do everything in our power to eradicate racism, and any other form of discrimination, from football, at any level and anywhere in the world."

In a statement on Saturday, Infantino says "we introduced the so-called 'three-step procedure' at our tournaments: a mechanism that allows referees to go as far as to abandon a match in case of discriminatory incidents."

Infantino says all member associations, leagues, clubs and disciplinary bodies should "apply harsh sanctions for any such kind of behavior" and that "racism has no place in football, just as it has no place in society either."

Infantino's intervention comes one day after Amiens' French league game at Dijon was temporarily halted after the visiting side's captain Prince Gouano was subjected to racist insults.

"I heard monkey noises," said Gouano, who asked the referee to stop the game.

FIFA says it fully supports Gouano, as well as players such as Kalidou Koulibaly, Raheem Sterling and Danny Rose, who were also subjected to racist abuse.

Three US troops, 1 contractor killed in Afghanistan IED blast, Pentagon says

Three US troops and 1 contractor were killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan Monday near Bagram Air Base, the Pentagon announced. Three U.S. service members were also wounded in the blast.

Those hurt were evacuated and are receiving care, the Pentagon said. The names of those killed are being held back for 24 hours until the notification of next of kin has been completed, as per U.S. Department of Defense policy.

The violence follows recent signs of support of US outreach to the Taliban.

Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah says he supports U.S. efforts to pursue a cease-fire with the Taliban, who effectively control half of Afghanistan and refuse to negotiate with his government. Abdullah Abdullah shares power with President Ashraf Ghani in a U.S.-brokered unity government. Abdullah spoke to The Associated Press on Sunday at the World Economic Forum in Jordan.

Abdullah says the Taliban could take part in elections and even compete for the presidency if they renounce violence. He says Afghans want peace, but "they don't want to live the way that the Taliban want them to live."

The Taliban have held talks with a U.S. envoy in recent months while continuing to carry out daily attacks on Afghan forces. The insurgents dismiss the Afghan government as a U.S. puppet.

Biden vows that ‘America is coming back,’ sparking ‘MAGA’ comparisons

The latest entry in the 2020 race, former Vice President Joe Biden, promised Thursday that “America is coming back,” which many critics compared to President Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

Biden, who officially launched his 2020 presidential campaign with a video, was swarmed by reporters in Wilmington, Delaware, and was asked if he had a “message for the rest of the world.”

“Yes,” Biden firmly responded. “America’s coming back like it used to be; ethical, straight, telling the truth… supporting our allies. All those good things."

Many on Twitter compared his remarks to Trump’s famous election slogan.

Others mocked Biden’s claim that America is “straight.”

Biden enters the race without the endorsement of his former running mate, President Obama.

He does, however, have a comfortable lead in the polls, averaging at 29.3 percent among primary voters according to Real Clear Politics.

Cohen told by lawyer he could 'sleep well' after contact with Giuliani about pardon: report

A lawyer told Michael Cohen in an email in April 2018 that he can “sleep well” because he has “friends in high places,” following an alleged "back channel" communication with President Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani, where the pardon issue was raised, a report said.

Cohen, Trump’s former personal attorney who will serve three years in jail for multiple crimes, has recently come under scrutiny over his testimony on the Capitol Hill, in particular, his statement that he "never asked for, nor would" accept a pardon from Trump.

Lanny Davis, one of Cohen's lawyers, admitted that Cohen "directed his attorney" to ask about a possible pardon. Stephen Ryan, a former lawyer for Cohen, reportedly discussed the issue with Trump's lawyers after FBI agents raided his client's home, office and a hotel room. Trump's legal team ruled out giving Cohen a pardon.

MICHAEL COHEN LAWYER ATTEMPTS TO CLARIFY TESTIMONY ABOUT PRESIDENTIAL PARDON, AMID CRITICISM

Cohen asked another lawyer to reach out to the president’s legal team on his behalf and through the attorney, Robert J. Costello, had a dozen conversations with Giuliani that were described as "a back channel of communication," the New York Times reported.

Costello reportedly wrote to Cohen, "Sleep well tonight, you have friends in high places" after reported email exchanges with Giuliani. Part of the correspondence reportedly included asking if Trump would be willing to put a pardon "on the table" for Cohen.

Costello advised Cohen that speaking about pardons with Trump’s team was premature, yet he did it anyway, the report said. When asked about it, the former New York mayor apparently told Costello that Trump was unwilling to talk about pardons.

“He got a little annoyed,” Costello told the Times. “I got the message. You only have to tell me once, Rudy.”

Fox News reached out to Giuliani early Thursday and did not immediately hear back.

“[Rudy Giuliani] got a little annoyed. I got the message. You only have to tell me once, Rudy.”

MICHAEL COHEN'S ATTORNEY ASKED TRUMP'S LAWYERS ABOUT PARDON AFTER FBI RAID

Giuliani confirmed to the Associated Press that Costello reached out to him after Cohen’s properties were raided last year.

“My answer was the president is not going to consider or give any pardons now,” Giuliani said. “As I have said in the past, the president has the right to, and that doesn’t mean he won’t consider it when the investigation is over.”

Federal prosecutors have now requested copies of communications Cohen had with Costello amid allegations of “possible violations of federal criminal law.”

“We have documents to back our position up, and are preparing to provide these to the U.S. Attorney’s office, who has asked for them,” Costello said in the statement, adding that Cohen’s account of the pardon discussions as “utter nonsense.”

BERLIN (Reuters) – Wulf Matthias will not stand for a second term as Wirecard’s chairman in 2020, German daily Handelsblatt said on Friday, citing sources in the financial industry.

For age reasons alone this would not be an option for Matthias, aged 75, Handelsblatt added.

Matthias will keep his mandate until it ends in 2020, the paper quoted a company spokeswoman as saying.

Wirecard was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.

Spain appears to have stemmed a surge in illegal migration that made it Europe’s main entry point for sea arrivals, after boosting joint efforts with neighboring Morocco to clamp down on the flow.

The country, which holds a national election Sunday, saw nearly 60,000 people reach its shores irregularly in 2018, most from Morocco and West Africa. But sea arrivals have plummeted since February.

While the migrant flow often fluctuates due to weather and other factors, an internal European Union report obtained by The Associated Press suggests intensified efforts to stop the migrants before they’re able to reach European waters are paying off.

The report doesn’t specify what Morocco did to hold back migrants or what it got in return other than “explicit recognition and support” from the Spanish government and the EU’s executive Commission in Brussels.

ZURICH (Reuters) – Shareholders approved Credit Suisse’s 2018 compensation report with an 82 percent majority on Friday, overriding frustrations expressed at its annual general meeting over jumps in executive pay during a year its share price plummeted.

Three shareholder advisers had recommended investors vote against Switzerland’s second-biggest bank’s remuneration report, while a fourth backed the report but expressed reservations about whether management pay matched performance.

The approval marked a slight increase over the 80.8 percent support garnered for the bank’s 2017 compensation report.

A nationwide teachers’ strike is spurring Poland’s government to hold meetings with educators, parents and experts to discuss ways to improve the country’s public schools.

Teachers’ unions refused to participate in Friday’s talks to protest the government’s refusal to grant pay increases, the unmet demand behind the nearly three-week strike that closed a majority of schools.

The unions have suspended the strike until September to allow for end-of-high-school exams and to give the government time to propose ways to satisfy teachers.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said improvements to the education system are urgently need to allow for better salaries and higher quality teaching.

Teachers want a 30% raise to their monthly earnings, which range from 1,800 zlotys to 3,000 zlotys ($470 to $780.)

LONDON (Reuters) – Activist investor Edward Bramson is likely to fail in his attempt to get a board seat at Barclays’ annual meeting next week, even though shareholders are dissatisfied with performance of the group’s investment bank.

New York-based Bramson’s Sherborne Investors and the board of the British bank have been sparring for months over Barclays’ strategy.

Bramson wants to scale back Barclays’ investment bank to reduce risk and boost shareholder returns. Barclays Chief Executive Jes Staley remains staunchly committed to growing the business out of trouble.

After failing to persuade Staley to change course since he began building a 5.5 percent stake in the bank in March last year, Bramson hopes a board seat will rachet up the pressure.

Both sides have written to shareholders pitching their case and Bramson has courted investors in one-on-one meetings, although none have publicly backed him yet.

Interviews by Reuters with five institutional investors in Barclays suggest Bramson has failed to persuade them.

Sherborne declined to comment.

Mirza Baig, head of investment stewardship at top-40 shareholder Aviva Investors, said Bramson was welcome on the bank’s register but the boardroom was a step too far.

“He has created a lot of value at other businesses, but, generally, when he has come in as executive chair and taken full control. This would be a different case where he would just be one lone voice on the board,” he said.

A second Barclays shareholder said he backed Bramson’s goal of improving returns but via an “evolutionary” approach.

“If you look at banks that have tried to restructure their operations in investment banking – you look at Natwest Markets, Deutsche Bank – I struggle to think of an example where a roughshod restructuring has been accretive to shareholder value.”

A third, top-30 investor said he had been impressed by incoming Chairman Nigel Higgins’ grasp of the challenge in hand, and felt investors would give him time.

“Management know they have to execute and deliver improved returns… [Higgins] will continue to re-shape the board but obviously he didn’t feel that having someone with a diametrically opposed view on it would be helpful.”

A fourth, top-30 investor agreed: “We voted for the chairman to come in and it would be crazy to allow an activist to join the board (at this time).”

Jupiter Fund Management, the 24th largest investor, said it also planned to vote against Bramson.

Barclays has nearly 500 institutional shareholders, Refinitiv data showed.

Since Staley joined Barclays in 2015, the investment bank returns relative to capital invested have increased but are still underperforming the overall business.

Barclays’ first-quarter figures showed the investment bank posted a 6 percent drop in income from its markets business and a 17 percent fall in banking advisory fees.

Returns in the investment bank fell to 9.5 percent from 13.2 percent a year ago.

Famed for successful campaigns against smaller British companies in sectors from chemicals to advertising, Bramson’s board seat pitch has been rebuffed by shareholder advisory firms.

Institutional Shareholder Services, the world’s biggest, said Bramson’s proposal “falls short of what can reasonably be expected from a shareholder trying to address issues at a 28 billion pounds, systemically important bank”.

Glass Lewis also flagged concern about Bramson’s lack of banking experience and “questionable” shareholding structure, referring to Sherborne’s use of derivative contracts to hedge losses should its strategy fail.

Critics said the arrangement meant his interests are not truly aligned with those of other long-term shareholders.

British advisory firm Pirc, however, said it recommended that investors abstain in the vote on Bramson’s proposal as a challenge to the board to do better in the year ahead – or face a similar contest in 2020.
