Britain says jailing of Hong Kong pro-democracy activists is deeply disappointing

LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s foreign minister Jeremy Hunt said on Thursday the jailing of four leaders of Hong Kong’s 2014 pro-democracy protests was deeply disappointing.

The sentencing of the activists followed a near month-long trial that was closely watched as China’s Communist Party leaders have put Hong Kong’s autonomy under increasing strain.

Britain returned Hong Kong to Chinese rule in 1997 under a “one country, two systems” principle, with the guarantee of a high degree of autonomy and freedoms not enjoyed elsewhere in China.

“The sentences handed to the ‘Occupy’ activists in Hong Kong are deeply disappointing,” Hunt said on Twitter. “One Country Two Systems and the Joint Declaration are about respect for civil and political freedoms.”

Australia's right wing party blames alcohol on loose tongue after asking for donations from NRA

Australian right-wing party officials have blamed alcohol after they were apparently caught seeking a donation from the U.S. National Rifle Association in an effort to lobby a change in gun laws in the country.

The One Nation party was criticized by Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Tuesday for trying to “sell Australia’s gun laws to the highest bidders” after asking for the donations.

The criticism came after an Al Jazeera undercover documentary in which One Nation party officials, Steve Dickson and James Ashby, flew to the U.S. and met with NRA officials.

They were caught allegedly asking for financial support just weeks before the Australian Parliament banned foreign political donations.

But the party defended itself this week, blaming alcohol for the officials’ loose tongues and slammed the broadcaster for putting their comments out of context.

“These conversations with the NRA were to look at nothing more than their techniques,” Ashby told reporters, adding that the trips he made were about learning about the ways President Trump won the election in 2016.

"These conversations with the NRA were to look at nothing more than their techniques. This was not about sourcing money from the NRA, this was about sourcing technology, an understanding of how they operate, but never was it about seeking $20 million from the NRA."

— James Ashby

“This was not about sourcing money from the NRA, this was about sourcing technology, an understanding of how they operate, but never was it about seeking $20 million from the NRA,” he continued.

“The conversations that have been recorded where there is talk of $10 and $20 million dollars — I’ll be the first to admit, we’d arrived in America, we’d got on the sauce, we’d had a few drinks. And that’s where those discussions took place. Not with any potential donors. No one but Rodger Muller, Steve Dickson and myself.”

DEMS WANT $50 MILLION FOR BIASED RESEARCH TO ATTACK GUN OWNERSHIP

The broadcaster was able to catch the One Nation officials after one of their journalists, Rodger Muller, pretended to be a grassroots gun rights activists in the U.S. who set up a meeting with the NRA, which he then covertly filmed.

Dickson, the other One Nation party official recorded at the meeting, said they hadn’t broken any rules during their trip to the U.S. and reiterated that the comments were made under the influence of alcohol.

"Just to clarify a lot of this. We’ve landed in the United States, this trip has been organized by Rodger Muller — who again, I want to make this point very clearly, was employed by a Middle Eastern country, Al Jazeera, to come to Australia as a spy to infiltrate into Australian politics."

“Just to clarify a lot of this. We’ve landed in the United States, this trip has been organized by Rodger Muller — who again, I want to make this point very clearly, was employed by a Middle Eastern country, Al Jazeera, to come to Australia as a spy to infiltrate into Australian politics,” Dickson told reporters.

“There are many, many things that were videoed, and I believe a lot of those things were taken out of sequence,” he continued.

“I’m going to apologize to the people of Australia for some of the things that Rodger Muller has taped me saying when we were having a few drinks at the bar at our hotel. I don’t talk like that publicly, we were three men talking together and we were having scotches for three or four hours. That is the truth of the matter.

How to say the ‘R-word’: bank executives grapple with recession talk

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Executives at the largest U.S. banks are grappling with how to best talk about the slowing economy and its impact on their businesses as they enter earnings season, people familiar with their thinking told Reuters.

Of particular concern is how to deal with the word “recession,” which has become all but verboten as U.S. gross domestic product growth has decelerated.

Although many economists are predicting a downturn, a big bank executive doing so can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. On the other hand, a top banker dismissing recession worries to calm fears could be seen as uninformed or dishonest.

When asked to name the single biggest threat to the U.S. economy at a congressional hearing on Tuesday, Citigroup Inc Chief Executive Officer Michael Corbat answered, “Our ability to talk ourselves into the next recession.”

The “R word,” as some are calling it, has been a topic of discussion during earnings planning, executives, investor relations staff and public relations officials said.

There are a few well-tested strategies to reassure investors without misleading them, said Pen Pendleton, founding partner of financial communications firm CLP Strategies in New York, and a former spokesman for Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse Group AG.

If a bank is seeing negative signs in its loan book or markets businesses, executives should say something like “we believe we are competitively positioned in the market place to tackle the challenges,” Pendleton said.

An easy way to avoid endorsing any particular outlook is to defer to what in-house bank economists are predicting, he added.

“CEOs are always cautious about commenting on the economic outlook, especially when indicators are negative.” he said.

Even if executives feel obligated to share bad news because of a fiduciary duty to investors, they are likely to hedge what they say, according to an adviser of one of the top 20 banks by assets who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

For example, if loan performance suffered executives might speak optimistically about the future, or chalk it up to a “one-time thing” she said.

If top bankers do acknowledge a slowing U.S. economy, they would not be alone.

The Federal Reserve took a sharply less aggressive posture last month when it signaled it would not hike rates this year and projected slower U.S. growth for 2019.

While policymakers made clear they saw no recession in the next few years, some cautioned incoming data could change their minds on whether the next move should be to raise or lower rates, meeting minutes showed on Wednesday.

The U.S. economy grew 2.9 percent in the fourth quarter, down from 3.6 percent the prior period and 4.2 percent in the middle of last year.

STOCK DROPS AND TEQUILA SHOTS

Wall Street CEOs and CFOs realize that their words carry a lot of weight, given they manage multi-trillion-dollar balance sheets and have insight into nearly every consumer and institutional lending business.

Bank stocks can be sensitive to any recession talk that makes headlines.

JPMorgan Chase & Co shares fell 1.7 percent when finance chief Marianne Lake said that “recessionary indicators … are not flashing red, but they are off the floor” at the bank’s investor day in March.

Dimon then helped talk the shares back up, saying the bank’s decision not to raise its profitability target was not a warning about the economy and that JPMorgan was not predicting a recession, though it was nonetheless “prepared for one.”

“In a world of sound bites it’s difficult to be nuanced about recession risk,” said Wells Fargo bank analyst Mike Mayo. “It’s a fine line between alarming (markets) and conveying an impression of being recession-ready.”

The pressure to say the right thing can be intense enough to cause sleepless nights, executives and their counselors say.

Ronn Torossian, head of New York-based 5W Public Relations, said he once spent nearly all night with a senior bank executive rehearsing, taping and listening to prepared remarks for the next day’s earnings discussion with analysts.

“I was next to him and he did a shot of tequila a few minutes before the early morning call,” Torossian said. “That may have helped more than the training.”

JPMorgan and Wells Fargo & Co will kick off bank results on Friday, followed by Citigroup, Goldman Sachs Group Inc, Bank of America Corp and Morgan Stanley next week.

Thousands attend NZ vigil, rally to fight racism, remember Christchurch victims

CHRISTCHURCH (Reuters) – Thousands gathered in New Zealand’s cities on Sunday to protest racism and remember the 50 Muslims killed by a gunman in Christchurch and as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced a national remembrance service to be held later this week.

About 15,000 turned out for an evening vigil in Christchurch in a park near the Al Noor mosque, where a suspected white supremacist killed more than 40 of the victims. Several more people were killed at the nearby Linwood mosque.

Many non-Muslim women wore headscarves at the vigil, some made by members of Christchurch’s Muslim community, to show their support for those of Islamic faith as they had at similar events last week.

Ardern said on Sunday that a national remembrance service would be held on March 29 to honor the victims, most of whom were migrants or refugees.

“The service will be a chance to once again show that New Zealanders are compassionate, inclusive and diverse, and that we will protect those values,” Ardern said in a statement.

The prime minister has been praised for her leadership following the attack. She swiftly moved to denounce the incident as terrorism, toughen gun laws and express national solidarity with the victims and their families.

The vigil started with an Islamic prayer, followed by a reading of the names of the victims, which included students from the nearby Cashmere High School.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can,” Okirano Tilaia, one of the school’s pupils, told the crowd. “Hatred cannot drive out hatred, only love can.”

Earlier in the day more than 1,000 people marched in a rally against racism in central Auckland, carrying “Migrant lives matters” and “Refugees welcome here,” placards.

Muslims account for just over 1 percent of New Zealand’s 4.8-million population, a 2013 census showed, most of whom were born overseas.

As New Zealand continued to mourn and ask questions about how such an attack could have happened in the peaceful Pacific nation, the victims’ families spoke about their losses.

Shahadat Hossain, whose brother Mojammel Haque was killed in the attack, arrived in New Zealand on Saturday to bring his brother’s body back to Bangladesh.

“I can’t describe how I felt when I saw my brother’s lifeless body,” he told Reuters. “I was devastated.”

Farid Ahmed, who was at the Al Noor mosque when the shooting took place, escaped but his wife, Husna, was killed. On Sunday, he went door-to-door, thanking his neighbors for their support.

“They came running… they were crying, they were in tears,” he said of his neighbors when they found out that Husna had died.

“That was a wonderful support and expression of love, and I am feeling that I should also take the opportunity to say to them that I also love them.”

Mercedes look to burst Ferrari’s bubble in Melbourne

March 13, 2019

By Ian Ransom

MELBOURNE (Reuters) – High hopes of a meaningful Formula One title race will face their first test at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday as five-times champion Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes team seek to crush the pre-season optimism surrounding Ferrari.

Under different management and after a positive winter testing, Ferrari have arrived in Melbourne with a fast car and plenty of buzz, raising expectation of a genuine challenge to five years of Mercedes dominance.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says the Ferrari threat is very real.

“Last year, we had to give it absolutely everything to come out on top. From what we have learned so far, this year will be even tougher,” he added.

“Judging from the performance in Barcelona (testing), it looks like we will have a proper fight on our hands in Melbourne.”

If Hamilton, winner of four of the last five championships, is feeling the pressure the Briton is doing well to conceal it.

A day before arriving Down Under on Monday, the 34-year-old indulged his new sky-diving hobby, jumping out of a plane over the Qatar desert.

Having won 11 of 21 races last season, another F1 title would put Hamilton one shy of Michael Schumacher’s record of seven and stir the debate about the greatest racer of all time.

The pressure is arguably heavier on the shoulders of German rival Sebastian Vettel, who won just five races last year and saw his challenge evaporate with a string of mistakes on track.

The four-times champion will bid for a third successive win at Albert Park’s season-opener, having foiled pole-sitter Hamilton amid a virtual safety car deployment last year.

“I feel Melbourne is the perfect place to start the championship,” said the 31-year-old German, now in his fifth season with the glamor team.

“I’ve got great memories of this track.”

With 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen having switched to Alfa Romeo, the team formerly known as Sauber, Vettel’s new partnership with highly-rated Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc will be under scrutiny.

The 21-year-old Leclerc, Ferrari’s youngest race driver since 1961, is one of a number of tyros seeking to make an early impression in Australia.

Max Verstappen, who at 17 was the youngest driver ever to start a race, is now a 21-year-old “veteran” in his fifth season and the main man at Red Bull, who also have 23-year-old Frenchman Pierre Gasly racing for them.

Red Bull, the best of the rest behind Mercedes and Ferrari last season, have ambitions of higher honors after partnering up with Honda engines.

The team said on Tuesday it had expedited an upgrade for the RB15 car in time for Sunday’s race, a month earlier than scheduled.

“Our optimism is not unfounded,” said Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko.

“I see us behind Ferrari over the race distance but ahead of Mercedes.”

Daniel Ricciardo will also hope for better luck at his home race in the yellow and black of Renault, having missed a maiden podium in Melbourne with Red Bull last year when he was hit with a three-place grid penalty for a minor technical infringement.

It will also be an emotional weekend for Pole Robert Kubica, who reboots his F1 career with the struggling Williams team eight years after being seriously injured in a rally car accident.

At a bumpy street circuit where overtaking has been difficult, F1 bosses will hope the introduction of new rules can inject spice.

The cars feature new front and rear wings, aimed at making it easier for them to get closer and overtake, while the driver that sets the fastest lap can earn an additional championship point, so long as he finishes in the top 10 in Sunday’s race.

Mother set to plead guilty in teen’s murder, dismemberment

A woman is set to plead guilty in the 2016 rape, murder and dismemberment of her 14-year-old daughter.

Former adoptions supervisor Sara Packer agreed to plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence. She's due to appear in a suburban Philadelphia courtroom Friday afternoon.

Packer admitted in court last week that she plotted to kill her adoptive daughter, Grace Packer, saying she hated the teenager and "wanted her to go away."

Sara Packer's boyfriend, Jacob Sullivan, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and related offenses and was sentenced to death.

Packer says she helped Sullivan tie Grace up and watched as he raped and strangled her. The couple stored Grace's body in cat litter for several months before dismembering it and dumping it in a wooded area.

March 10, 2019

Bill Hamid made six saves and helped D.C. United get a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon against host New York City FC at Yankee Stadium.

In his 200th appearance with the team, Hamid consistently frustrated NYCFC by delivering timely saves and helped D.C. United remain the only team to not allow a goal in the first two weeks.

Hamid turned in his big performance on a day when D.C. maintained possession for only 34.2 percent of the match.

The 28-year-old kept the game scoreless in the waning moments before four minutes of stoppage time was added.

In the 89th minute, he made a diving stop on Anton Tinnerholm’s shot from the center of the box. A minute earlier, Hamid made a nifty right-handed stop on Alexandru Mitrita’s right-footed shot from the top of the box.

D.C. gained four points in the first two weeks of the new season against two of the Eastern Conference’s top three teams from a year ago after opening the season with a 2-0 win over defending champion Atlanta.

Before the late saves, Hamid also stopped a free kick attempt on Mitrita in the 78th minute.

NYCFC registered 21 shots and has totaled 51 shots in its last two home games against D.C. NYCFC only has one goal in those games and is 0-2-2 in its last four games against D.C.

NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson made three saves. He made a left leg save on Luciano Acosta in the 83rd minute to keep the game scoreless.

NYCFC controlled most of the tempo in a scoreless first half as it registered nine shots with one being on target and three more getting block.

NYCFC’s best chance to score occurred when Alex Ring’s shot was deflected over the right crossbar in the 31st minute and when Hamid made a diving stop on Ring five minutes later.

Ring’s scoring chances occurred after D.C. was denied two opportunities to score by Johnson. In the 11th minute, Johnson dove to his right to stop Acosta and 12 minutes later, he used his right leg to stop Paul Arriola’s right-footed attempt.

Flores died at the scene. The man, whose name was not released, walked to a nearby hospital where he’s recovering from his gunshot wounds.

Rocha allegedly fled the scene and remained at large for more than a month, the Daily Bulletin reported. He was formally arrested at 4:30 p.m. after arriving at Los Angeles International Airport from Mexico, KTLA-TV reported.

The suspect was booked at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on murder and attempted murder charges, the City of Chino Police Department said on Facebook.

Flores ended her seven-year relationship with Rocha just two months before her death and still lived in fear of him until that point, a sister of the victim, Bernice Flores, told the Daily Bulletin.

“He said himself so many times to other people, ‘If I can’t have her, no one will.’ ” Flores said, adding that her sister stayed in the relationship longer that she would have liked in fear that Rocha would hurt her or her family if they broke up.

Rocha was convicted on misdemeanor battery in 2016 and sentenced to 60 days in prison. He was originally charged with misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon, but the charges were lowered in a plea deal, the Daily Bulletin reported.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”
