Iraqi rapper gives angry youth in city of Basra music outlet

A youth-led protest movement in the southern Iraqi port city of Basra, which saw riots last summer over failing services and soaring unemployment, has found an artistic outlet in the words and beats of homegrown rapper Ahmed Chayeb.

The 22-year-old rapper, also known as Mr. Guti, says his generation is fed up with the false piety of politicians and religious authorities who preach about faith and duty but have let Basra fall apart.

"We need to be critical of everything that's not right," Chayeb told The Associated Press in a recent interview in his home studio, where he recorded "This is Basra ," lashing out at the powerful Shiite religious establishment.

Mr. Guti's expertly produced music videos have drawn tens of thousands of YouTube viewers but his new-found fame has also brought danger: threats from hard-liners are common and two of the city's protest organizers have been killed in recent attacks. Their killers remain at large.

Basra, long known around the Persian Gulf for its drinking establishments and its maritime vibe, fell under conservative rule after Shiite clerics and militias took over the city in the vacuum caused by the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Once renowned for its canals and markets, Basra's waterways today are clogged with waste, and its drinking water is filthy. The city erupted in violent unrest last summer that led to demonstrators burning down government and party-affiliated buildings.

Amid the revolt, rap offered Basra's youth — tired of joblessness and failed services — an opportunity for lyrics blistering with criticism.

In "This is Basra," Chayeb raps against the backdrop of a march around the city's burning municipal building during last summer's protests, asking why his generation has been called on to fight a war for leaders who cannot secure water for the city.

The conflict he refers to is the four-year war against the Islamic State group that the U.S.-backed Iraqi government forces ultimately won. Many young Shiites followed a call in June 2014 by Iraq's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, for volunteers to fight against IS. Thousands died in that fight.

"We were martyred for this war, I fell, and the authority has forgotten my loyalty," he raps.

"You're not associated with Hussein," he goes on, invoking the revered Shiite imam and grandson of the Prophet Muhammad who died in the 7th century Battle of Karbala, and whose example Iraq's leaders have asked their youth to follow.

Chayeb, mindful of the dangers, is circumspect about where and when he performs. He says most of his concerts are arranged through private contacts; he stopped recording at a professional studio in 2016. He said he's received death threats that have grown more intimidating in recent months.

But he won't stop rapping.

"If we stay afraid, nothing will change," he said.

As a teenager, Chayeb watched U.S. and British rappers on YouTube, then got together with friends to perform his own rhymes. He also followed a string of Arab rappers and sees Klash, from the Saudi city of Jiddah, as one of his greatest influences.

"My aim is to explain what is happening to Basra because of the people who are corrupt," he said, adding that rap is a way "to release my pain."

Corrupt politicians and clerics should watch out, he says.

"Beware of Basra," he raps. "We won't be quiet until our demands are met."

Trump announces news conference at U.S.-Mexico border within three weeks

March 13, 2019

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday his administration would have a news conference at the southern U.S. border with Mexico in the next three weeks, as he continues to seek congressional backing for a wall there.

“We’re going to have a news conference at the border over the next three weeks,” Trump told reporters at a briefing at the White House on drug trafficking.

The U.S. Congress is on the verge of issuing a sharp rebuke to Trump over his declaration of an emergency at the border.

Already approved by the House of Representatives, the resolution to terminate the declaration has sufficient support in the Senate to be passed, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said last week.

Trump said “we’ll see” whether he has to veto the congressional resolution ending his emergency declaration.

Dems pushing to impeach Trump may be trying to delegitimize his election, Mike Lee says

Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee said Tuesday that Democrats pushing to impeach President Trump may be trying to delegitimize his election.

Speaking to the “Fox News Rundown” podcast, Lee said: “They will be perhaps intentionally delegitimizing President Trump's election, they'll be cheapening the process by bringing forward allegations that in my view are nowhere near worthy of impeachment charges and they'll be diverting all attention ... attention that could otherwise be devoted to something else.”

He said the impeachment call wouldn't benefit any Americans “except maybe... a small handful of people in the media. Primarily the media on the left, and a few politicians on the left.”

HARRIS JOINS ELIZABETH WARREN’S CALL FOR IMPEACHMENT

Some of the Democrats vying for the White House in 2020 have been clamoring for impeachment proceedings against Trump, but many of their congressional colleagues — who would have to manage such efforts — signaled they were far more wary. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi this week has urged rank-and-file Democrats to proceed with caution.

The split reflected tensions that could emerge in coming months between Democrats on Capitol Hill and those seeking the party’s presidential nomination.

Lee, who also spoke Tuesday morning on an appearance on “Fox and Friends,” said the push to impeach Trump could backfire as it did in the process involving then-President Bill Clinton in the ’90s.

“We can look back on the Clinton impeachment,” he said. “I said that was not the finest hour of either the Republican party or the republic itself. I don't think anyone really gained much by that, and I think we ought to learn from that today.”

ECB should have picked some women to run Banca Carige: Enria

February 18, 2019

FRANKFURT (Reuters) – The European Central Bank should have picked “a more gender-balanced team” than the six men it appointed to run struggling Italian lender Banca Carige earlier this year but it was also facing time constraints, the ECB’s new top bank supervisor Andrea Enria said on Monday.

The ECB’s Single Supervisory Mechanism put Carige into “temporary administration” on Jan. 2, just as Enria was taking office, after the bank had failed to raise capital and most of its board had stepped down.

In some of his first public remarks, Enria said he shared the spirit of a complaint over Carige’s all-men line-up by a member of the European Parliament, but added gender considerations cannot always prevail when time is tight.

“It was important that the temporary administrators appointed were able to promptly and effectively perform

the requisite tasks,” Enria said in a letter to Sven Giegold.

“While these requirements were indeed met in the case in question, I share your view that it would have been

preferable to appoint a more gender-balanced team of temporary administrators,” he added.

The SSM retained then Chairman Pietro Modiano and Chief Executive Fabio Innocenzi as Carige’s administrators along with Raffaele Lener, an outside legal expert, while nominating three more men to the bank’s surveillance committee.

The appointment of Enria to replace Daniele Nouy as the head of the SSM has itself been criticized for allowing one of the few top ECB posts held by a woman to go to a man despite there being a strong female candidate.

Giegold was one of three parliamentarians who wrote to ECB President Mario Draghi just before Enria’s appointment to “clarify (their) positive view” of his main rival for the role, Ireland’s deputy central bank governor Sharon Donnery.

The ECB has fallen behind self-imposed targets for women in management positions.

Carige has since received state support and denied last week a report in La Stampa newspaper saying that customers had withdrawn around 3 billion euros worth of deposits.

UK’s Hammond says possible EU will insist on long Brexit delay

March 14, 2019

LONDON (Reuters) – British finance minister Philip Hammond said the European Union might insist on a long delay to Brexit if the UK government requests an extension to the process.

On Wednesday, Britain’s parliament rejected leaving the EU without a deal, further weakening Prime Minister Theresa May and paving the way for a vote that could delay Brexit until at least the end of June.

“This is not in our control and the European Union is signaling that only if we have a deal is it likely to be willing to grant a short technical extension to get the legislation through,” Hammond told Sky News on Thursday.

“If we don’t have a deal, and if we’re still discussing among ourselves what is the right way to go forward, then it’s quite possible that the EU may insist on a significantly longer period,” he said.

EU eyes cash demands as Brexit talks turn sour

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – Britain will face EU demands for billions of euros in cash if it fails to strike a Brexit deal, Brussels officials and diplomats said on Monday after talks with London stalled 18 days before it is due to leave the bloc.

Prime Minister Theresa May agreed a withdrawal treaty last year under which Britain would pay the European Union close to 50 billion euros over the coming years to meet commitments made while a member. But the British parliament has rejected the deal and the treaty will be void if nothing changes by March 29.

In the event of a “no-deal” exit, likely to cause economic disruption, the EU would insist on Britain settling those financial commitments – a significant part of the EU budget – before any resumption of discussions, which both sides see as inevitable, on how to manage trading relations in the future.

With May planning to put the package to a second vote in the House of Commons on Tuesday, her negotiators failed to secure concessions in Brussels at the weekend and EU officials and national diplomats told Reuters they were growing pessimistic and looking at how a collapse of talks might play out.

An assumption in Brussels that May would ask for and get a delay to the deadline of a few weeks is in question: “We really want to be over with it now,” one official said. “It’s not going anywhere so even an extension is unlikely to break the impasse.

“There’s not much patience or goodwill left on our side.”

Even if there ends up being a disorderly departure, both sides acknowledge that they will have to return to the table to negotiate both a long-term free trade agreement and arrangements to avoid a “hard” customs border on land between the EU and the British province of Northern Ireland. But, EU diplomats and officials said, Brussels would put a price on those talks.

“First, they would have to agree to pay what they are due,” an EU official said. Diplomats said negotiators have briefed the 27 other governments that this would be a condition for talks.

“Imagine all the bad blood and acrimony should we end up with a no-deal after two years of negotiations,” an envoy from one EU member state told Reuters.

“Yes, we would need to engage with them again. But not right away. And not before they show us the money.”

Short European equities still ‘most crowded trade’: BAML survey

April 16, 2019

LONDON (Reuters) – Short positioning on European equities was seen as the “most crowded trade” for the second straight month in April, a fund manager survey by Bank of America Merrill Lynch found on Tuesday.

Trade war was the biggest tail risk, according to the survey of 187 investors with $547 billion assets under management, while growth worries dominated.

Some 66 percent of investors see a “low growth, low inflation” backdrop – the highest level since October 2016.

While an inversion of the U.S. yield curve led many to predict an imminent recession, the survey found 70 percent of investors expect a global recession to start only in the second half of 2020.

A volte-face by the U.S. Federal Reserve on rate hikes helped drive stocks up this year. In the latest survey, a slim majority of investors said the U.S. Federal Reserve will not hike interest rates again during this cycle.

Allocation to global bank stocks fell to the lowest level since September 2016 – a reflection of investors’ wariness of the sector which suffers when interest rates stay lower for longer.

Multiple people died Thursday when a semitrailer plowed into stationary traffic that resulted in explosions and flames on a Colorado freeway, authorities said.

The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the Denver suburb of Lakewood when a truck driver lost control while traveling east on Interstate 70, according to a preliminary investigation. The collision started a chain reaction and a diesel fuel spill, Lakewood police spokesman Ty Countryman told the Denver Post.

“This is looking to be one of the worst accidents we’ve had here in Lakewood,” he said.

The driver of the runaway truck survived. At least one truck was carrying lumber, another was hauling gravel and the third may have been carrying mattresses, KDVR-TV reported.

President Trump will address members and leaders of the National Rifle Association on Friday at the group’s annual convention in Indiana.

Around 80,000 gun enthusiasts and more than 800 exhibitors are expected to pack the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis for the three-day event, the Indianapolis Star reported. It will mark the third straight year that Trump will deliver the keynote address, where he is expected to champion the rights of gun owners.

“Donald Trump is the most enthusiastic supporter of the Second Amendment to occupy the Oval Office in our lifetimes,” Chris Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action (ILA), said in a statement. “President Trump’s Supreme Court appointments ensure that the Second Amendment will be respected for generations to come. Our members are excited to hear him speak and thank him for his support for our Right to Keep and Bear Arms.”

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence spoke at last year’s convention in Dallas. During his speech, Trump assured gun owners that he would protect their Second Amendment rights, according to the paper.

“Your Second Amendment rights are under siege,” Trump told the cheering audience in Dallas. “But they will never, ever be under siege as long as I am your president.”

Trump has supported some gun control measures in the past. Last year, his administration imposed a ban on bump stocks, attachments that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire in rapid bursts. Although, he most recently threatened to veto two Democratic gun control bills.

This year’s convention comes as the NRA faces outside pressure and internal problems. The group has seen its legislative agenda stall amid a series of mass shootings — including a massacre at a Parkland, Fla., high school in February 2018 that left 17 dead and launched a youth movement against gun violence.

It’s also grappling with infighting in its ranks, money problems and investigations into whether Russian agents courted officials and funneled money through the group.

“I’ve never seen the NRA this vulnerable,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, a nonprofit that advocates for gun control measure.

The convention will run through the weekend and conclude Sunday.

(Reuters) – Ailing British retailer Debenhams said two proposed company voluntary arrangements (CVA) could see all its stores remaining open during 2019, with 22 closures planned for next year, putting about 1,200 jobs at risk.

Debenhams’ lenders took control of the retailer earlier this month in a process designed to keep its shops open at the expense of shareholders.

BENGALURU (Reuters) – Chinese brands controlled a record 66 percent of Indian smartphone market in the first quarter, led by Xiaomi Corp, a report showed, with volumes rising 20 percent on the back of popularity for brands like Vivo, RealMe and Oppo.

Xiaomi’s India shipments fell by 2 percent over last year, but the Beijing-based company was still the biggest smartphone brand in the country, followed by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, according to Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research.

Shipment volumes for Vivo jumped 119 percent, while those of Oppo rose 28 percent.

“Vivo’s expanding portfolio in the mid-tier range ($100 to $180) drove its growth along with aggressive Indian Premier League cricket campaign,” Counterpoint analysts said.

India is the world’s fastest growing market for smartphones, where affordable pricing coupled with features like “selfie” cameras and big screens have popularized Chinese brands.

Video streaming services like Netflix Inc and Hotstar, as well as heavy usage of messaging apps like Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp have further spurred demand.

“Data consumption is on the rise and users are upgrading their phones faster as compared to other regions,” Counterpoint’s Tarun Pathak said.

“As a result of this, the premium specs are now diffusing faster into the mid-tier price brands. We estimate this trend to continue leading to a competitive mid-tier segment in coming quarters.”

The Dalai Lama has returned to his headquarters in the north Indian hill town of Dharmsala after a brief stay in a hospital in the capital for treatment of a chest infection.

Hundreds of exiled Tibetans lined the streets of Dharmsala carrying ceremonial scarves and incense sticks to welcome the Dalai Lama on Friday.

The 83-year-old Tibetan spiritual leader told reporters that he had fully recovered, but that the illness had been “a little bit serious.” He did not give any details.

The Dalai Lama usually spends several months a year traveling the world to teach Buddhism and highlight Tibetans’ struggle for greater freedom in China. But he has cut down on his travels in the past year to take care of his health.
