Md. GOP Gov. Hogan Gives ’20 Run ‘Serious Consideration’

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said Tuesday he is considering a Republican primary challenge against President Donald Trump for next year's presidential election.

Hogan spoke at a "Politics & Eggs" event in New Hampshire and confirmed a White House run could be in his near future.

"A lot of people have been approaching me, probably since around my inauguration in late January," Hogan said, according to ABC News. "People have asked me to give this serious consideration, and I think I owe it to those people to do just that. That's what I'm doing."

The governor added that seeing the Republican Party throw its full weight behind Trump for the 2020 election indicates a shift in how the party used to be.

"Not that the Republican National Committee doesn't have the right to support the sitting president," he said. "But to change the rules and to insist 100% loyalty to the dear leader, it just didn't sound much like the Republican Party that I grew up in."

Regarding the Mueller report, which was released last week after nearly two years of investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether Trump or his campaign conspired with the Russians, Hogan said the report had some "very disturbing stuff."

"Just because aides did not follow his orders, it's the only reason we don't have obstruction of justice," Hogan said.

Hogan has been critical of Trump in the past. He told the media in March it is not the "enemy of the people," a phrase often used by Trump. Earlier in March, he teased a potential White House run but said he would need to see "an actual path to victory" before joining the race.

Poste Italiane aims to ride e-commerce wave to boost parcel delivery

March 20, 2019

MILAN (Reuters) – Poste Italiane aims to more than double the number of parcels it delivers by 2022, the head of its Mail and Parcel (M&P) unit said, as the former postal services monopoly presses on with its restructuring.

The group, which now comprises insurance and financial divisions and a digital payments unit in addition to M&P, has suffered falling letter volumes since at least 2008.

But Poste recorded its first growth in parcel revenue in 10 years in 2018, compensating for the fall in letters and showing that the restructuring was starting to pay off, it said.

“We aim to deliver 100 million parcels in 2022 compared with 45 million our staff delivered last year,” Massimo Rosini, head of M&P division, told investors in London.

The group wants to increase its market share for e-commerce parcel delivery to 40 percent by 2022 from 33 percent in 2018.

E-commerce is projected to grow rapidly in Italy as the country catches up with other European countries such as Britain where shopping online is much more common.

To compete with e-commerce giant Amazon, which is offering its Prime delivery service in the biggest Italian cities, Poste plans to fully implement a joint delivery system introduced last year and is developing an alternative network of delivery points.

Poste signed an agreement last year with labor unions to extend parcel delivery to the weekends and have staff hand over both parcels and letters to clients, while reducing the frequency of letter deliveries.

Revenue from the M&P division is expected to remain almost stable at around 3.5 billion euros this year, accounting for around one third of Poste’s total revenue of 11 billion euros expected for this year, Rosini said.

Poste CEO said on Tuesday the group was studying the possibility of delivering with drones and driverless vehicles to win more clients.

CNN: Dems Want Overhaul of US Government

Some Democrats are pushing for a complete overhaul of the U.S. government – from lowering the voting age to expanding the size of the Supreme Court, CNN is reporting.

The list of reforms being proposed by prominent Democrats goes far beyond climate change and healthcare, the news network said in an analysis posted Thursday.

Here are some of the changes being floated by the Democrats:

  • Overhauling the election system:  Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., a presidential candidate, has endorsed abandoning the Electoral College.
  • Expanding the size of the Supreme Court: Sens. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Warren – all presidential candidates -- told Politico they would consider increasing the number of justices on the high court.
  • Addition of a new state: CNN noted every Democrat making a bid for the White House, who serves in the House or Senate, has endorsed making Washington D.C. a state.
  • Lowering the voting age: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has endorsed lowering the voting age to 16, which would require a constitutional amendment.

CNN noted the idea have little or no chance of becoming reality in the near future. And President Donald Trump commented on the proposals on Wednesday calling the Democrats "strange" for pushing them.

London street preacher arrested in viral video: 'Don't take my Bible!'

A street preacher outside a London subway station was arrested in a viral video for "breach of peace," "disturbing people's days," and accused of racism and "Islamophobia," according to officers caught on camera and a bystander.

"A Christian preacher this afternoon was arrested at Southgate station London N14 for preaching about Jesus," Eye on Antisemitism, a UK-based group that reports Anti-semitic incidents, wrote on Twitter about an incident that occurred Saturday.

PORN STAR-TURNED-PASTOR SAYS SHE WANTS 'EVERYONE TO EXPERIENCE THE LOVE OF GOD'

"I can be arrested if you want," the street preacher of African origin said at the beginning of the video. "I will not go away because I need to tell them the truth because Jesus is the only way, the truth, and the life."

"I appreciate that, but nobody wants to listen to that," the officer said. "They want you to go away."

Two officers then handcuffed the man as he protested: "No, no, no. Don't take my Bible!"

One of the officers reportedly replied: "You should have thought about that before being racist."

'WHEN GOD BECOMES REAL': BETHEL PASTOR OPENS UP AFTER BEING HOSPITALIZED FOR NERVOUS BREAKDOWN

Ambrosine Shitrit, the founder of Eye on Antisemitism, who recorded the video, said there was nobody upset or interested in the preacher, but added that when the preacher asked the police why he was being arrested, they allegedly replied: "For Islamophobia."

"There was no racism prior to that. There was no racism after that. There was no Islamophobia," Shitrit said.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman told the Daily Mail the preacher was later released without charge.

"Police were called to Southgate Underground Station at 1.52pm on Saturday, 23rd February in response to concerns raised about a man's behavior. An arrest was made to prevent a breach of the peace. The man was then de-arrested and no further action was necessary."

A legal team at Christian Concern, who has represented street preachers before, say they are working with the preacher, identified as Preacher Olu.

"After being unnecessarily arrested, he was dropped off in an unfamiliar suburb without enough money to get home," Christian Concern wrote. "Thankfully a kind member of the public gave him some money, but what did the preacher do next? He went straight back to Southgate tube station and continued to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ that same evening."

Church of England priest, Father Matthew Cashmore, called the arrest "deeply, deeply concerning" and said the officers should be "ashamed of themselves."

"The way his Bible was removed is horrendous," Cashmore said.

Neutrons used to examine priceless Harvard gold specimen

Scientists at a premier U.S. laboratory have helped to unravel some of the mysteries about a rare gold specimen discovered at a Colorado mine more than 130 years ago.

Officials at Harvard University's mineral museum were anxious for Los Alamos National Laboratory's assistance in understanding more about the structure of the specimen of wire gold, which looks as if it were formed by twisting together a bunch of thin strands of gold.

The 263-gram specimen is named the Ram's Horn, and Harvard officials have said it is the finest known example of its kind.

No scientific studies previously had been published on the internal nature of the specimen. Its density rendered low-energy X-rays and other diagnostics ineffective, and scientists were prevented from using invasive methods like slicing into the specimen because that would have damaged it.

That's where the half-mile-long (0.8-kilometer-long) particle accelerator at Los Alamos came in. Scientists used neutrons provided by the machine to examine the sample's texture and crystalline structure.

They determined it's very different from more commonly found wire silver, in which a single wire can be made up of hundreds to thousands of crystals.

"The gold appears to be composed of only a few single crystals," said John Rakovan, a professor at Miami University in Ohio who was involved in the work. "Furthermore, we discovered that these samples are not pure gold, but rather gold-silver alloys with as much as 30 percent silver substituting for gold in the atomic structure."

The study's results could have implications for scientists who are trying to understand the geochemical processes at play in the formation of gold deposits, according to the lab.

The Ram's Horn will go on display as the centerpiece of an exhibit at the Harvard Museum of Natural History in 2020. The show called "The Rare and the Beautiful" will highlight aspects that make objects valuable and how humanity's appreciation for beauty, rarity and culture has shaped those values.

The 4.7-inch-tall (12-centimeter-tall) specimen is normally kept in a bank vault out of sight.

Last fall, it was hand-delivered to New Mexico so the scientists could do their work using the accelerator. It had to be insured while at the lab, but Harvard has declined to say how much the piece is worth.

Harvard began collecting mineral specimens in the 1850s to better understand their crystalline structure. The Ram's Horn was bequeathed to the university in 1947 as part of the collection of A.C. Burrage, a Harvard-educated attorney and businessman who was in the copper industry.

The specimen was found in 1887 at the Ground Hog Mine in Red Cliff, Colorado.

Raquel Alonso-Perez, curator at the Mineralogical and Geological Museum at Harvard, pointed to an 1893 newspaper article about the specimen's discovery and said even then the spirals of gold were considered unique.

Sven Vogel, a physicist at Los Alamos's neutron science center, said pulses of neutrons from the accelerator usually are used to characterize materials that are relevant to the lab's mission, such as uranium alloys or nuclear fuels.

"These academic collaborations really push the envelope for us," he said. "And of course, it's a lot of fun too to apply these methods and help the universities to gain insight that otherwise they would have no chance to gain."

NMacedonian prison chief fired after ex-ministers assaulted

The head of North Macedonia's main prison in the capital of Skopje has been fires after two former government ministers being held in pre-trial detention were assaulted in the prison yard by other inmates.

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev demanded the resignation of Gjoko Kotevski on Friday, a day after the attack in which one ex-minister was injured. The victim launched a hunger strike to protest the attack.

The labor and construction ministers in the country's former conservative government, in power from 2006-2016, have been ordered jailed for 30 days pending trial in connection with the violent storming of parliament in 2017.

The jail attack, in which the former ministers were punched and kicked, took place late Thursday, a day after they entered prison. Both have been moved to a more secure prison area.

Drew Peterson, convicted wife-killer, says he’s ‘living the dream’ in federal prison, maintains his innocence

Former cop and convicted wife-killer Drew Peterson said in a new interview his current federal digs are an upgrade from his previous prison confines and shared his regrets about getting married -- though, quite a few people probably wish Peterson had remained single.

Peterson, speaking exclusively to FOX32 in a phone interview from federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, joked that life inside the maximum security prison is like "living the dream."

“It was dirty," Peterson said of the Illinois state prison he was previously in. "The mattresses I had, the pillow I had, you wouldn't put your dog on it. It was terrible. Urine and defecation spread on the walls."

The 65-year-old called that facility a "horrible, horrible place."

Former police sergeant Drew Peterson is pictured in this booking photo, released by the Will County Sheriff's Office in Illinois, United States on May 8, 2009.

"Then I come to the federal place and it's comparatively like a day care center,” he told FOX32.

DREW PETERSON'S MURDER CONVICTION UPHELD BY ILLINOIS SUPREME COURT

The former police sergeant from the Chicago suburb of Bolingbrook is serving a 38-year sentence in the 2004 death of ex-wife Kathleen Savio. He'll follow that with 40 additional years after a conviction in 2016 on allegations that he plotted to kill the prosecutor who put him behind bars.

Officials said Peterson was moved from an Illinois state prison to the federal facility after the threat to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow suggested he was a threat to prison security.

I would have stayed a bachelor for sure. It's just like every time I fell in love with somebody and tried to make a life with them, things didn't work out.

— Drew Peterson

He first came to national attention in 2007 after his fourth wife, Stacy, vanished from the couple's home in Bolingbrook, Ill. She has never been found and no one has been charged in connection with the case. However, Peterson was recorded telling fellow inmate Antonio Smith he was worried that Glasgow would eventually charge him in the case.

Kathleen Savio was found dead in her bathtub in 2004. Her death was initially ruled an accident, but Glasgow ordered the case re-opened following Stacy Peterson's disappearance.

During FOX32’s two separate 15-minute interviews, it was apparent that, since he was originally arrested in May 2009, Peterson has not wavered regarding his innocence.

“I didn't murder Kathy and I didn't murder Stacy,” Peterson told FOX 32.

DREW PETERSON REPORTEDLY ATTACKED IN PRISON

Peterson, who claims that Stacy ran off with another man, told FOX32 there's still a chance she'll still show up.

“Well, there's been all kinds of cases of a woman coming back years after, as much as 10 or 12 years afterward," he said.

He added that he's had no prison romances with women inside or outside the penitentiary, and revealed one thing he wished he may have done differently over the years.

“I would have stayed a bachelor for sure," he told FOX32. "It's just like every time I fell in love with somebody and tried to make a life with them, things didn't work out."

The one-time Bolingbrook "Police Officer of the Year" said he's still in good health and makes $20 working in the prison laundry. When he's not watching sitcoms and movies, he told FOX32 he keeps in touch with his 6 kids, two of whom have recently graduated from "well-known" colleges.

Peterson, who is eligible for parole in 2081, is still appealing his murder-for-hire conviction in the state courts. He told FOX32 he blames his defense attorneys for bungling his defenses and plans to challenge the Illinois Supreme Court's decision to uphold his murder conviction in federal courts.

(Reuters) – Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Friday he had assured China’s Huawei Technologies that it would not face discrimination in the rollout of Italy’s 5G telecoms network.

Conte was speaking on a visit to China where he said he met Huawei’s chief executive, Ren Zhengfei. The prime minister’s comments were carried in Italy by TV broadcaster Sky Italia.

“I told him that we have adopted some precautions, some measures to protect our interests that demand very high levels of security … not only from Huawei but any company entering into the 5G arena,” he said.

Huawei, the world’s biggest producer of telecoms equipment, is under intense scrutiny after the United States told allies not to use its technology because of fears it could be a vehicle for Chinese spying. Huawei has categorically denied this.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Donald Trump on Friday was expected to announce his intention to revoke the United States’ status as a signatory of the Arms Trade Treaty, which was signed in 2013 by then-President Barack Obama but never ratified by Congress, two U.S. officials said.

Trump was expected to announce the decision in a speech in Indianapolis, to the National Rifle Association, the officials said. The NRA, a powerful gun lobby group, has long been opposed to the treaty, which was negotiated at the United Nations.

By Margaryta Chornokondratenko

KIEV (Reuters) – A Ukrainian computer game that brings to life a town abandoned after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster may not sound like everyone’s idea of fun but has attracted 60,000 people globally since its launch in October.

Players of “Isotopium: Chernobyl” drive tanks around the ghost town of Prypyat near Chernobyl, knocking out competitors as they search for an energy source called isotopium and collecting points every time they find some.

While the game takes its theme from the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in northern Ukraine, which marked its 33rd anniversary on Friday, it was also inspired by the 2009 science fiction film “Avatar”.

Newcomers to the game think they have entered a virtual world when in fact they are controlling a real robot, equipped with a camera and computer, which makes its way around a model of the town rendered down to the tiniest detail.

“When playing our game, for the first 5-10 minutes many players don’t understand that it is not fictional,” said the game’s co-founder Sergey Beskrestnov. “They message us saying: ‘You have cool texture, you have good graphics, your designer is good, well done. You have a cool operating system.’

“People then reply: ‘It is not an operating system, it is real,’ and the player can’t believe it is real,” said Beskrestnov, speaking mid-game from Prypyat city square as he towers over surrounding five-storey buildings.

Kiev-born Beskrestnov was just 12 years old when on April 26, 1986 a botched test at the nuclear plant in the then Soviet Union sent clouds of smoldering nuclear material across large swathes of Europe, forced over 50,000 people, including Beskrestnov’s family, to evacuate and poisoned unknown numbers of workers involved in its clean-up.

Beskrestnov and his partner Alexey Fateyev used Google maps and hundreds of pictures from the Chernobyl area to recreate Prypyat landmarks, including residential buildings, a hotel, concert hall, amusement park and a stadium.

The game’s real-scale model occupies a 180 square meter (1,938 sq. ft) basement of a residential building in the Ukraine city of Brovary, just 150 km (93 miles) from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and 30 km east of Kiev.

Miniature radioactivity warning signs, graffiti on the walls of abandoned buildings and tables and chairs left scattered inside a small cafe all add to the creepy atmosphere of a once lively town.

“It’s a really neat concept …,” Shaun Prescott wrote in a review of the game published by PC Gamer magazine in January. “Controlling the tanks is kinda cumbersome, but they are tanks, after all.”

An attentive player will notice at least one inaccuracy – the real Chernobyl nuclear power plant is not located in town as it is in the game.

It costs $9 to immerse in the atmosphere of a post-apocalyptic town for an hour but only 20 people at a time can play simultaneously. Beskrestnov’s company, Remote Games, said 62,615 people around the world have registered to play the game, including around 15,000 in France and 10,000 in the United States.

A camera fixed on top of a moving tank broadcasts high quality signal in real time, allowing players from as far apart as Australia and Canada enjoy the game without facing any time delay in delivering video signals.

Its creators next ambition is to devise a game featuring the colonization of Mars in which 1,000 people will be able to simultaneously control robots on different missions involved in the operation.

“Many people advise us to contact Elon Musk directly because it resonates his dreams and ideas,” Beskrestnov jokes.

April 26, 2019

(Reuters) – Initial optimism over first-quarter results from Starbucks Corp was waning fast on Wall Street on Friday, as analysts questioned the longer-term prospects of its new sales push given subdued overall customer traffic numbers especially in China.

The company on Thursday beat brokerage estimates for quarterly same-store sales on the back of demand for its new Cloud Macchiato, Matcha tea and cold brews in the United States.

However, BTIG’s Peter Saleh was one of a number of sector analysts who said while customers forking out for higher-priced new drinks had helped drive growth in same-store sales, “anemic” traffic at cafes remained a concern.

He and others pointed to a 1 percent decline in footfall at cafes in the Chinese market, viewed as crucial to the chain’s growth for the foreseeable future.

More broadly, transaction numbers, the substitute analysts use for customer traffic, were unchanged in all three of the company’s global regions.

Shares in the company, which hit a record high after the results on Thursday, fell 1 percent in morning trade.

“We remain cautious given near-term headwinds surrounding China, including cannibalization, increasing competition (and) a slowing economy,” Wedbush analyst Nick Setyan said.

Starbucks has also poured money into beefing up its delivery network in China as it battles with local startup Luckin Coffee, whose speedy growth led it to file for an IPO in the United States earlier this week.

New menu items and partnerships with delivery services, the heart of the company’s strategy to win back customers lost to artisanal coffee shops and cheaper fast-food rivals, did help Starbucks’ sales in its home market.

However, analysts said growth in China may continue to be subdued.

Wells Fargo analyst Bonnie Herzog said she expects store expansion in China to take priority over comparable sales growth.

She downgraded her rating on Starbucks’ to “market perform” from “outperform”, arguing that the company facing tough sales comparisons later on in 2019 from last year and the current rich valuation of shares meant the stock had limited room to rise.

“Investors will be hesitant to invest new money in a stock with a topline that, while still strong, is unlikely to meaningfully accelerate,” Herzog said.

Still, the company’s solid same-store growth in the United States, improving profit margins and a lower tax rate for the rest of the year led at least 6 Wall Street brokerages to raise their price targets on the stock to as high as $81.

11 of 29 brokerages rate Starbucks “buy” or higher, 17 “hold” and 1 “sell” or lower. Their median price target is $75.

A man accused of fatally beating a 4-month-old boy after finding out the infant wasn’t his son had been previously deported from the United States five times, most recently in late 2016, immigration officials said.

Carlos Zuniga-Aviles, a 33-year-old Honduran national, has used multiple aliases, including the fake name of Jose Agurcia-Avila he gave police in Memphis, Tennessee, following his arrest in the boy’s death earlier this month, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials told WMC-TV.

ICE officials have since filed an immigration detainer against Zuniga-Aviles, who was initially deported back to Honduras in February 2010. He was also returned to the Central American country in 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016.

“ICE will seek to take him into custody to reinstate his removal order following the resolution of the criminal charges he currently faces,” the statement reads. “Mr. Zuniga-Aviles has been removed from the US five prior times: his most recent removal by ICE to Honduras took place in December 2016.”

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT WITH CRIMINAL HISTORY ARRESTED IN CALIFORNIA WOMAN’S MURDER

Zuniga-Aviles later returned to the U.S. following his removal, a felony under federal law, immigration officials said. It’s unclear exactly when he returned, but he was living with his girlfriend and the woman’s 4-month-old son in Memphis at the time of his arrest, WREG reports.
