Samsung Electronics delays Galaxy Fold media events in China

April 22, 2019

SEOUL (Reuters) – Smartphone maker Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has postponed media events for its Galaxy Fold planned for this week in Hong Kong and Shanghai, a company official said, days after reviewers of the foldable handset reported defective samples.

The official did not elaborate on reasons or rescheduling.

Instead of plaudits ahead of the phone’s launch on April 26 in the United States, the South Korean conglomerate has been blighted by technology journalists reporting breaks, bulges and blinking screens after using their samples for as little as a day.

Samsung said it received “a few” reports of damage to the displays of samples of the $1,980 handset, raising the specter of the combustible Galaxy Note 7 three years ago which the firm ultimately pulled from shelves at massive cost.

The reviewers’ reports of broken screens went viral online and prompted the creation of hashtag #foldgate on Twitter.

Samsung has hailed the folding design as the future in a field that has seen few surprises since Apple Inc’s iPhone in 2007. Chinese rival Huawei Technologies Co Ltd has also announced a folding handset, the Mate X.

The Samsung official on Monday said it had no change to its previously announced release date in the United States.

It plans to begin South Korean and European sales in May, and Chinese sales from an undisclosed date.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib says Islamophobia still 'very present on both sides of the aisle' in Congress

Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib said on Sunday that Islamophobia is a problem on both sides of the aisle in Congress.

The remarks from the Michigan congresswoman who, along with Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, is one of only two Muslim women in Congress, came during a discussion about criticism directed at Omar over accusations of anti-Semitism regarding her controversial comments about Israel, including her assertions of its influence on U.S. foreign policy.

"I pause and think to myself 'is it because she's a black American and she's Muslim?' And so that's where I pause and say to myself, 'Is there an issue here?' And I guess our mere presence there. The fact that now there's not only one but now three Muslim Americans serving in Congress," Tlaib said on CNN's "State of the Union."

PETE BUTTIGIEG DEFENDS HIS EXPERIENCE, SAYS 2020 CALLS FOR CANDIDATE WITH 'COMPLETELY DIFFERENT' BACKGROUND

Rep. Andre Carson, an Indiana Democrat who has served in Congress since 2008, also identifies as Muslim.

Tlaib was accused of being anti-Semitic in January when, in response to comments posted by Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, she suggested that Senate Republicans were more loyal to Israel than the U.S. The incident happened amid a report that GOP leaders were planning to introduce a bill that would punish companies that participate in the "Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions" (BDS) movement against Israel. BDS proponents seek to pressure Israel through economic and other means over the country's treatment of Palestinians.

"They forgot what country they represent," Tlaib, a who made history last week by becoming one of the first two Muslim women to ever serve in Congress, wrote.

"That our mere presence is going to able to possibly break down any of these kinds of racialized, you know, opinions, this kind of Islamophobia that I do feel like is still very present on both sides of the aisle. And I think my colleagues are not seeing that as an attack. It's just saying that we just have a lot of work to do," she told CNN.

"And I can tell you I've been there long enough to see that there are some issues there — again, on the other side of the aisle — that continue to be held — they're being held unaccountable," Tlaib, who was born in Detroit to Palestinian immigrant parents, added.

Tlaib has been a vocal critic of President Trump's policies and called for his impeachment in remarks to her supporters, saying: “People love you and you win. ... And when your son looks at you and says, ‘Momma, look you won. Bullies don’t win.’ And I said, ‘Baby, they don’t, because we’re gonna go in there and we’re gonna impeach the motherf---er.’”

In response to her initial comments, Trump called them “disgraceful” and said that they “dishonored herself and dishonored her family.”

The liberal congresswoman told CNN that she and Omar "want to be heard, and we want to be seen beyond whatever these kinds of labels that people like to put on us."

"And I think we just become an easier target for folks. And that's what worries me," she said.

Sri Lankan officials say Oman minister has arrived for refinery project launch

COLOMBO (Reuters) – Oman’s oil minister arrived in Sri Lanka on Saturday to participate in the launching of a $3.85 billion oil refinery project, government officials in Colombo said, three days after Oman said it had not yet agreed to invest in the facility.

The arrival of Mohammed bin Hamad Al Rumhy could mean that the project – Sri Lanka’s biggest foreign direct investment deal – is back on track. However, there is no immediate sign of a formal deal involving Omani investment.

Sri Lankan officials said on Tuesday Oman’s oil ministry planned to take a 30 percent stake in the project.

A Singapore company controlled by India’s Accord Group would invest the other 70 percent. The storage tanks part of the facility would be owned fully by the Accord entity.

But on Wednesday, Oman denied knowing about its part in the plan to build the refinery on Sri Lanka’s southern coast.

“He [Oman’s oil minister] is here to take part in the ground breaking ceremony for the oil tanks of the refinery,” a senior official at Sri Lanka’s strategic development ministry told Reuters.

Officials from Oman’s oil ministry were not immediately available for comment.

The refinery is being constructed near a $1.4 billion port at Hambantota that is controlled by China Merchants Port Holdings.

India and China have been vying for political influence in Sri Lanka in recent years, with investment a key part of the battleground.

China is the biggest buyer of Omani oil, importing about 80 percent of the Middle Eastern nation’s overall crude exports in January, according to Oman government data.

Another government official confirmed the minister’s arrival and his participation at the ceremony in Hambantota on Sunday.

There are also plans in place by China Harbour Engineering Corp to build an investment zone alongside the port.

Texas killer dies, questions still remain about girls’ death

A man serving 70 years for a 1978 slaying near Houston who was also under investigation in the unsolved killings of several missing girls has collapsed and died in a Texas prison.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jeremy Desel says 79-year-old inmate Edward Harold Bell died Saturday at the Wallace Pack Unit in Navasota.

Desel added that there was no foul play suspected. He declined to discuss Bell's medical history due to privacy laws.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Bell's death leaves unanswered questions about the unsolved murders of 11 girls he claimed to have killed.

Bell was already serving time for killing an ex-Marine from Pasadena when he admitted in 2011 to kidnapping and killing several girls in the 1970s.

CNN: Trump Said Nuke Football Was Answer to NKorea in '17

A new report claims President Donald Trump referred to the nuclear football while saying how he would deal with North Korea in the fall of 2017.

CNN cited three people who said they were present when Trump made the remark during a trip to storm-ravaged Puerto Rico in October 2017.

"This is what I have for Kim," Trump allegedly said, pointing to the nuclear football — a large briefcase that is always close to the president and has the ability to authorize a nuclear strike.

The alleged comment came as Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un were having a war of words regarding North Korea's threats to use nuclear weapons on the United States or one of its allies. Tensions have softened since last summer when Trump and Kim met, and threats of destroying each other no longer emerge from Washington, D.C. and Pyongyang.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló told CNN he was with Trump during his 2017 trip to the island and would not confirm to CNN that Trump made the aforementioned remark.

"There were other topics that were being discussed and my view is that the sole focus of that trip should have been on Puerto Rico," he said.

"He was talking about a whole host of other issues, but I would rather leave those conversations internal."

April 26, 2019

By James Davey

LONDON (Reuters) – With Sainsbury’s dream of creating Britain’s biggest supermarket group in tatters, its chastened CEO Mike Coupe needs to reassure investors he has the plan to arrest a sales decline when he presents annual results next week.

Britain’s competition regulator blocked Sainsbury’s 7.3 billion pound ($9.4 billion) takeover of Walmart’s Asda on Thursday, saying the deal would increase prices. Sainsbury’s shares fell 5 percent and are down 22 percent over the last three months.

For Sainsbury’s fourth quarter to March 9 analysts are on average forecasting a 1.6 percent fall in like-for-like sales, which would follow 1.1 percent decline over the Christmas period.

Monthly industry data from researcher Kantar has also shown Sainsbury’s as the weakest performer of the big four grocers this year and this month it lost its status as Britain’s No. 2 supermarket group by market share to Asda.

While Sainsbury’s has struggled, market leader Tesco has gained momentum, this month reporting a 34 percent jump in full year profit.

Prohibition of the deal was a major blow to Coupe, its architect and Sainsbury’s boss since 2014.

Martin Scicluna became Sainsbury’s chairman last month and when bedded-in may decide that if the group needs a major shake-up it is best carried out by a new leader.

Much will depend on the attitude of 22 percent shareholder the Qatar Investment Authority, which has so far declined to comment, as well as Coupe’s own appetite to continue after 15 years at the group.

THE RIGHT STRATEGY?

Coupe said on Thursday he was confident Sainsbury’s was pursuing the right strategy.

That was a clear indication that Wednesday’s results statement will not include radical changes to the group’s plans, such as a big margin reset — sacrificing profit to drive sales.

However, sources connected to Sainsbury’s said Coupe would likely acknowledge that more needs to be done on prices, so the supermarket business can better compete with its big four rivals – Tesco, Asda and No. 4 Morrisons – as well as German-owned discounters Aldi and Lidl.

Coupe’s strategy is based on differentiating Sainsbury’s food offer, growing its general merchandise, clothing business and bank, while investing in convenience and online channels.

Some analysts believe major change is needed.

HSBC analyst David McCarthy reckons Sainsbury’s needs a margin reset, should allocate more space for core lines and needs to drive better store standards. He said Sainsbury’s might consider closing down space in some of its larger stores and reducing its non-food offer.

For the full 2018-19 year analysts are on average forecasting a pretax profit of 626 million pounds, up from 589 million pounds in 2017-18 – a second straight year of profit growth. A full year dividend of 10.5 pence per share is forecast versus 10.2 pence last time.

Bank and lawyer fees related to the proposed combination with Asda were 17 million pounds in the first half and have reportedly jumped to around 50 million pounds.

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada posted a budget surplus in the first 11 months of the 2018/19 fiscal year compared to a deficit the year earlier as revenues increased mostly on higher tax incomes, the finance department said on Friday.

The surplus for April-February was C$3.1 billion, compared to a deficit of C$6 billion in the same 2017/18 period. Revenues climbed by 8.5 percent, mainly due to higher tax receipts, while program expenses rose by 4.8 percent.

The surplus for February was C$4.3 billion compared with C$2.8 billion in February 2018. Revenues jumped by 12.2 percent while program expenses posted a more modest 6.9 percent gain.

Last month, the Liberals unveiled their new budget, projecting a C$14.9 billion deficit in 2018/19, with the deficit rising to C$19.8 billion in fiscal 2019/20.

President Trump said Friday he would beat Joe Biden “easily” in the 2020 presidential election, suggesting the former vice president could not have enough “energy” to hold the post—taking an apparent swipe at his age.

The president, departing the White House, was asked about Biden’s entrance into the Democratic primary field. Biden announced his presidential bid early Thursday morning, marking his third attempt at the White House.

JOE BIDEN OFFICIALLY LAUNCHES 2020 PRESIDENTIAL BID

“I think we’d beat him easily,” Trump told reporters Friday.

Trump, 72, said he feels “young” and is ready for 2020, and another term for his administration.

“I feel like a young man. I am a young, vibrant man,” Trump said. “I look at Joe, I don’t know about him.”

The president’s comments seemingly were a shot at the age of Biden, who is 76.

BIDEN ENTERS WHITE HOUSE RACE WITHOUT OBAMA’S ENDORSEMENT

“I would never say anyone’s too old,” Trump said. “I know they’re all making me look very young both in terms of age and in terms of energy.”

Biden became the 20th candidate to join the crowded Democratic primary field Thursday. But Biden is not the oldest in the pack. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is 77 and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., is 69.

Should Trump be re-elected, he would be 74 on Jan. 20, 2021—Inauguration Day. Should the presidency go to one of the elder Democrats in the field—Biden would be 78; Sanders would be 79; and Warren would be 71.

Meanwhile, in a wide-ranging interview on “Hannity” Thursday night, Trump dismissed Biden’s candidacy, nicknaming him “Sleepy Joe,” and saying he’s “not the brightest bulb.” Trump also said that while the former vice president has name recognition, he won’t “be able to do the job.”
