WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro visited the Central Intelligence Agency’s headquarters on Monday, an unusual move for a foreign head of state that was not on the public agenda for his first official trip to Washington.

The visit underscored Bolsonaro’s embrace of U.S. influence in Latin America to confront what he calls a communist threat against democracy — a theme he remarked on during a dinner on Sunday evening with his ministers and right-wing thinkers.

Presidential advisers, including his official spokesman, had said during the dinner that his agenda on Monday morning would be kept private. But Bolsonaro’s son, Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, revealed the visit in a Twitter post.

“Going now with the (president) and ministers to the CIA, one of the most respected intelligence agencies in the world,” he wrote. “It will be an excellent opportunity to discuss international topics in the region with experts and technicians of the highest level.”

The Brazilian president was scheduled to meet later on Monday with former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and deliver remarks at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The CIA’s headquarters is in Langley, Virginia, near Washington.

Mad dash for campaign cash: 2020 Dems race to post big numbers before filing deadline

The fundraising pitches from the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates are coming in fast and furious.

“If you've been waiting to make your first donation, there is no better time than right now – before Sunday's deadline,” highlighted an email from Sen. Bernie Sanders campaign.

BETO O'ROURKE RAISES AN EYE-POPPING $6 MILLION IN 24 HOURS

An email from former San Antonio, Texas mayor and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro’s campaign alerted that “we are just three days out from our first official FEC deadline.”

And the campaign of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York spotlighted that “this is last call – I’m counting on your help right now.”

Sunday is the last day candidates can bring in campaign cash in the first fundraising quarter for the 2020 presidential race. Starting as early as Monday, the candidates can start reporting their fundraising hauls, and the numbers will be repeatedly analyzed and scrutinized.

Fundraising is considered an important barometer of a candidate's popularity and a campaign's strength. The cash can be used by a candidate to build an organization and hire staff and consultants, increase voter outreach efforts, travel and fund ads.

Democratic strategist Jesse Ferguson, a presidential campaign veteran, highlighted that the numbers are an important “data point to show us how campaigns are doing.”

THE LATEST FOX NEWS 2020 DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY POLL

“The numbers will surely be over-interpreted, but they will tell us who is building the base of support needed in order to stay in for the long haul,” explained Ferguson, who served as a senior spokesman on the 2016 Clinton presidential campaign.

And with an extremely large Democratic field, a positive report will help a candidate build momentum and grab media attention.

In 2007, then-Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois was already a candidate on the rise, but his status as a frontrunner alongside then-Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York was only enhanced by an eye-popping first quarter campaign cash figure.

On the flipside, a lackluster report could kick off a campaign’s death knell.

“There’s going to be a natural thinning of the herd and the Q1 fundraising numbers will be an inflection point on that journey,” noted longtime GOP strategist Colin Reed.

This election cycle, there’s even more at stake, especially when it comes to the number of contributors to a campaign.

The first Democratic nomination debates are less than three months away, and for the contenders to make the stage, they must pass two key thresholds. One is a traditional metric –  polls. They must reach at least one percent in three surveys.

The other involves fundraising – candidates must receive contributions from at least 65,000 donors in at least 20 states.

“The numbers will show us who is building the grassroots support needed to get on the debate stage,” Ferguson noted.

The campaigns are stressing the threshold in their fundraising pleas.

“We're still 3,578 founding donors short of our critical goal, and time's running out before our first FEC filing deadline. If we want to get Kirsten on the debate stage and prove to everyone that a community-led campaign like ours can win, we absolutely have to close this gap,” the Gillibrand campaign highlighted this week in an email to supporters.

And Castro pleaded in a message to supporters that “the first Democratic Presidential debates were just announced. Before my very first End of Quarter Deadline in 72 hours, will you pitch in $13 to help me qualify?”

The campaigns will start revealing their numbers starting Monday and must file their figures with the Federal Election Commission by April 15.

But even before the deadline, we know a few things.

Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas hauled in $6.1 million in the first 24 hours after he launched his campaign earlier this month. That figure slightly edged out Sen Bernie Sanders of Vermont, raised $5.9 million in his first day as a candidate.  Sanders said this week that he’s already received 713,839 contributions and is aiming for one million by the filing deadline.

Sen. Kamala Harris of California brought in $1.5 million in her first day as a White House contender. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Gov Jay Inslee of Washington State and former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper each raised $1 million in the 24 hours after launching their campaigns.

2020 DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES PUBLICLY BLAST THE RICH WHILE PRIVATELY TAKING THEIR DONATIONS

And South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s campaign told Fox News they hauled in more than $600,000 in the 24 hours after appearing in a CNN town hall earlier this month, and raised more than $1 million through two ensuing fundraising pledges.

And some of the candidates jumped into the race with money already in the bank – thanks to pre-existing accounts from their Senate campaigns. Among them are Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts with $12.5 million, Gillibrand $10.5 million, Sanders $8.8 million, Klobuchar $4.4 million and Cory Booker of New Jersey with $4.1 million.

But that’s just an appetizer.

“Could there be surprises, for sure,” Ferguson spotlighted.

While the topline figures are important, he said cash on hand is equally significant.

“The easiest thing for a candidate is to raise a lot. The question is how many of them are actually building a war chest so that they can compete for a campaign that still has a year to go until the nomination,” Ferguson explained.  “I think people often get too excited with the top line money raised and don’t look at what it took to raise that money. And the real question to me is who’s got money in the bank so that they can compete for the long haul.”

And pointing to the new emphasis on small-dollar online donations, he spotlighted that “in the past what you needed was money in the bank. Now you need money in the bank and grassroots fuel in the tank.”

The fundraising figures may also help the Republicans.

Reed, a former executive director of the pro-GOP opposition research shop America Rising, said the first quarter numbers “will help establish new front runners, which will then drive the research efforts.”

NY Post: Rev. Sharpton’s Honorary Degree Faces Opposition

New York City's Medgar Evers College proposed resolution to bestow an honorary doctorate degree on Rev. Al Sharpton is facing opposition over the activist's inflaming race tensions in the Crown Heights neighborhood during 1991 riots, according to the N.Y. Post.

"This is not a person you honor," Norman Rosenbaum, the brother of a man who was stabbed to death by an angry mob shouting "Kill the Jew," told the Post. "Within the last 27 years he hasn't changed. The same character is there."

Rev. Sharpton, 64, would be honored as a man of "unwavering commitment to racial, educational and socioeconomic equity" at the June 5 commencement of the taxpayer-funded state college, but there is controversy over his stoking the racial flames over the accidental death of a black, 7-year-old Gavin Cato, according to the report.

"I think he's a fraud and a charlatan whose actions over the years speak for themselves and they're not good actions,” Rosenbaum added to the Post. "He's a man who does not promote peace. He's not told the truth."

Rev. Sharpton also came to the defense of a teenager in 1987 who claimed to have been abducted and raped by a group of white men, a story that was later exposed as a hoax but Rev. Sharpton has not apologized for defending, according to the report.

"I can't believe the guy's being recognized for anything . . . worried about his own political agenda and that's it," Steven Pagones, an ex-prosecutor who won a defamation suit against Rev. Sharpton, told the Post.

A suspected armed robber was killed Sunday night in New Orleans' central business district following a shootout with police that left three others critically injured, authorities said.

New Orleans Police Department spokesman Andy Cunningham told reporters the suspect had opened fire on officers at approximately 6:45 p.m. Cunningham added that no officers were hit in the exchange of gunfire, but one officer was injured in a car crash while responding to the scene.

"It was like 'Wild, Wild West' going on," one witness told local media.

New Orleans EMS spokesman Lt. Jonathan Fourcade told Fox 8 Live that the shooting unfolded near the intersection of Canal Street and Elk Place. The intersection is just outside the boundary of the French Quarter and located near New Orleans City Hall, the Superdome and Tulane University Medical School.

Ex-CEO tells Lynch trial HP did not need Autonomy at any cost

LONDON (Reuters) – Hewlett-Packard did not have to buy Britain’s Autonomy to solve the U.S. company’s other problems in 2011, its former chief executive told the $5 billion fraud trial of Mike Lynch.

Lynch is accused of fraudulently inflating the value of Autonomy, which HP bought for $11.1 billion and then wrote down by $8.8 billion a year later. He argues that HP itself, a “vast but floundering company”, botched the acquisition.

Autonomy was a market leader in software for unstructured data, helping companies extract the meaning from emails, video or voice calls, which are hard to analyze in traditional ways.

And Leo Apotheker, architect of the deal and HP’s CEO between November 2010 and September 2011, had sought to boost HP’s languishing profitability by integrating its legacy computer and printer business with higher-margin software.

But the former CEO of Europe’s leading business software group SAP resisted suggestions from Lynch’s defense lawyer in London’s High Court that the acquisition of Autonomy was central to a desperate strategy.

“Unstructured data was at the center of your plans,” Robert Miles QC, acting for Lynch, told Apotheker, who was called as a witness in the case.

“No, that’s not right, it was part of the plan,” Apotheker said, adding that HP had considered buying either Autonomy or German group Software AG in the first half of 2011, but decided on the British firm because it would provide the “technological uplift” that HP wanted.

It was not clear cut, Apotheker said:

“Looking at financial markets, investors, I think they would have preferred Software AG,” he said.

Apotheker who said in his witness statement that he had “never told the due diligence team to prioritize due diligence of Autonomy’s technology over its financials”, also rejected the idea that HP was in crisis.

“But it wasn’t doing well. I was very unhappy with the results but that doesn’t mean the company was about to go under.”

HP is suing Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s answer to Bill Gates, along with his former finance chief Sushovan Hussain for more than $5 billion. Lynch also faces criminal fraud charges in the United States, which carry a maximum term of 20 years. Hussain has been convicted of fraud in a related U.S. case.

ONLY SOFTWARE

At the opening of the case last week, HP’s lawyer Laurence Rabinowitz QC said the U.S. company believed it was buying a fast-growing software firm with no hardware business.

Apotheker recalled that Lynch told him Autonomy was a “very focused” pure software company when they first met in Palo Alton, California, in April 2011.

He said he understood that to mean Autonomy’s strategy was driven by “software and software only”.

HP argues that covertly selling hardware was one of the ways that Autonomy inflated its revenue, while Lynch’s lawyers have said it was commercially justified.

Apotheker was replaced by Meg Whitman, who planned to refocus the company on its core hardware strengths after an outcry from shareholders over the new strategy and a steep decline in HP’s share price.

Hewlett Packard Company in 2015 split into two separate publicly traded companies – HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.

Whitman is expected to be called as a witness later in the trial, while Lynch himself is expected to appear around July.

The case is expected to last until the end of the year.

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI (Reuters) – The grounding of India’s Jet Airways is turning into a quick windfall and long-term opportunity for international airlines keen to scoop up nearly a million outbound passengers from what was once the nation’s biggest airline.

Jet, which previously had a fleet of around 120 largely Boeing Co planes, was forced to indefinitely halt all flight operations on April 17 after its banks rejected the carrier’s plea for emergency funds.

The carrier’s descent into crisis has benefited international airlines in the form of rising fares and demand, data showed.

Fares from India to cities such as Dubai, London, New York, Singapore and Bali in the first quarter of 2019 rose between 4 percent and 32 percent from a year ago, according to Indian travel portal MakeMyTrip Ltd.

In the peak travel months of May and June, fares to London have spiked as much as 36 percent and tickets to San Francisco are up nearly 20 percent from a year ago, according to data from travel portal Yatra.com.

“For the next three months it’s actually bonanza time for international players,” said Ashish Nainan, a research analyst at CARE Ratings. “At least until the middle of June, the fares are not going to come down.”

Due to rising demand, even before Jet’s lessors grounded planes, carriers such as British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Singapore Airlines Ltd and United Airlines saw an up to a 27 percent increase in passenger numbers from India in the last quarter of 2018, data from India’s aviation regulator showed. That is the latest period for which the data is available.

India is one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, clocking 15-20 percent domestic growth in recent years. It has long had only two full-service long-haul carriers, state-run Air India and Jet.

Jet is now hoping to be bailed out by a new investor, with final bids due on May 10.

INCREASING CAPACITY

Before its grounding, Jet had the biggest share of India’s outbound international air traffic, carrying 12 percent of the 7.8 million passengers headed overseas in the Oct-Dec quarter, down from 14 percent a year earlier, data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation showed.

For an interactive graphic on Jet’s market share, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2WvDQYi

For an interactive graphic on average daily flights by the airline, click https://tmsnrt.rs/2FeFDel

The total number of passengers traveling overseas with Jet fell 10 percent during the last quarter of 2018 even as the outbound travel market grew about 5 percent.

Meanwhile, Singapore Airlines posted a 27 percent increase in passengers from India, Cathay registered 17 percent growth and British Airways saw a 10 percent rise in the same period.

Cathay said the events at Jet combined with increasing demand for travel had led it to deploy larger aircraft with more seats on some Indian routes.

“In the long term we would certainly like to be able to offer more capacity into India, not just on our existing routes but by establishing new services to secondary cities,” Cathay said in a statement.

Singapore Airlines, in an email to Reuters, said the Indian market is “very promising” but declined to give details of airfare levels or demand patterns in the wake of Jet’s exit, citing a quiet period before the release of its annual results.

DOMESTIC GAINS

Jet’s grounding has also had a big impact on the domestic market, with inter-city air fares to major cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata soaring more than 20 percent in May and June, according to Yatra.com.

The spike in fares is expected to underpin strong earnings for IndiGo and SpiceJet Ltd, which are set to report results for the quarter ended March 31 in the coming weeks.

“Domestic Indian carriers are the main benefactors, but I suspect if Jet fails to be revived by May 10 then Vistara and other airlines that ply international routes, particularly the lucrative Gulf market, are the main winners,” said Shukor Yusof, the head of aviation consultancy Endau Analytics. Vistara is a joint venture of India’s Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines.

Inadequate bilateral traffic rights between India and other countries, however, could be an impediment to foreign carriers’ hopes of winning business lost by Jet, some analysts said.

“Even before Jet’s operational shutdown, international capacity was significantly constrained,” said Kapil Kaul, CEO for South Asia of consultancy CAPA. “We have now more serious capacity challenge … this is unlikely to be stabilized in the near term.”

A new national government likely to be in place sometime after elections end in May is expected to address the international capacity constraints, and once bilateral agreements are eased airlines including Emirates, Turkish and Qatar would immediately benefit, said Kaul.

“We would love to add more flights but we are at the limit of the allocation granted to us for traffic rights,” Emirates Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Antinori told reporters in Dubai on Wednesday.

(Reuters) – AstraZeneca Plc beat first-quarter sales and earnings expectations on Friday as the British drugmaker benefited from a push into cancer drugs and emerging markets including China.

Newer treatments such as lung cancer drug Tagrisso, now the company’s top selling medicine, have helped the drugmaker’s return to growth after years of crumbling sales due to patent losses on older drugs.

Sales in China have shown explosive growth, more than doubling since 2012, but AstraZeneca executives on Friday said that may not be sustained.

“The enormous growth you currently see in China, 28 percent, probably is not sustainable, but we feel very bullish that the growth will continue to be at a pace of between 15 percent and 20 percent,” Ruud Dobber, executive vice president, BioPharma, told Reuters.

Shares of the company were down 0.2 percent at 5,878 pence at 1031 GMT.

The turnaround in AstraZeneca’s fortunes has been powered by a push into cancer treatments led by Chief Executive Pascal Soriot, who saw off a 2014 takeover bid from Pfizer in part by promising annual sales of $45 billion by 2023.

In the first quarter, sales from its oncology unit rose 59 percent to $1.89 billion, accounting for 35 percent of total product sales.

The company has moved deeper into cancer therapy market through wide-ranging deals, including those for immunotherapy and targeted therapy. Last month, it agreed a multi-billion dollar oncology deal with Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo Co Ltd.

“We’re reaching that point where after years of having to keep faith, we have actually got something tangible to believe in,” Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Nicholas Hyett said.

AstraZeneca also backed its annual sales and earnings forecast and said it has extensively prepared for UK’s anticipated exit from the European Union, even in the event of a no-deal exit.

The company has already spent more than 40 million pounds ($52 million) on Brexit preparations, including stockpiling six weeks’ worth of drugs in the UK and four weeks in continental Europe to guard against shortages.

AstraZeneca said product sales rose 14 percent at constant currency to $5.47 billion in the quarter, led by its lung cancer drug Tagrisso and respiratory treatment Pulmicort.

China sales increased by 28 percent to $1.24 billion in the quarter, accounting for nearly a quarter of overall product sales.

Core earnings came in at 89 cents per share in the quarter. Analysts on average were expecting core earnings of 85 cents per share and product sales of $5.29 billion, according to a company provided consensus of 19 analysts.

It’s the type of crime that doesn’t happen every day.

Police in the suburbs of Philadelphia say three suspects broke into a medical facility in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, last Saturday and fled with 18 colonoscopies – devices used for examining the health of patients’ colons.

The devices were reportedly worth a total of about $450,000, authorities said.

But police were perplexed about what the suspects might have planned to do with the instruments.

“This is not something that a typical pawn shop might accept,” Lower Merion Police Detective Sergeant Michael Vice told Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV. “My feeling would be that it was some type of black market sales.”

Such a market apparently does exist, Lower Merion Police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath told Philly.com.

“They appeared to know precisely where to go, and they pried the door open,” McGrath said of the suspects, who were captured on surveillance video leaving the facility, carrying bulging backpacks.

Police are hoping the suspects will be caught in the end.
