America’s top military officer stressed that Google’s ventures in China are aiding its military and communist regime’s ability to control its people.

Companies doing business in China are required to have a cell of the Communist Party present, said Gen. Joseph Dunford during a forum at the Atlantic Council in D.C. Thursday.

“That will to lead to intellectual property from that company finding its way to the Chinese military,” said Dunford. “This is not about me and Google.”

“This is about us looking at the second and third-order effects of our business ventures in China, China’s form of government, and the impact that’s going to have on the United States’ ability to maintain a competitive military advantage and all that goes with it.”

Last year, Google drew the ire of politicians like Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for refusing an artificial intelligence contract with the Pentagon less than a year after starting an AI research center in China.

“All of it will be shared with the military and with the repressive forces that are doing this,” said Rubio. “[Google] doesn’t want to give AI technology to the [U.S.] military because, God forbid, we may use it someday to target a terrorist or someone who wants to harm America. But [Google] has no problem opening up a center of AI in China, knowing full well how anything you do in China — if it’s a benefit to the military, they’re going to use it; if it’s a benefit to the security services, they’re going to use it.”

Correspondingly, Dunford further expressed his concern on how China is using developments in artificial intelligence to “control” the vast majority of its people, indirectly referring to the country’s Orwellian social credit system that blacklists people based on “trustworthiness.”

“My concern when you think about things like artificial intelligence… They’re gonna help an authoritarian government assert control over its own population,” said Dunford. “What China is able to do is identify patterns of behavior amongst people and determine who’s reliable and who’s not reliable.”

“There is no question in my mind that China will leverage technology to assist the 6% of the Chinese population in controlling the other 94%.”

Google is refusing to remove an application activists believe promotes the idea that homosexuality is both a sin and susceptible to change.

The Living Hope Ministries is essentially a conversion therapy app, according to LGBTQ rights groups that are urging Google to ding the project. The app, which has already been removed by Apple and Amazon, offers young people and parents articles and testimonials.

Nearly 140,000 people have signed a petition on Change.org pushing the company to make a move. Supporters of the app argue, meanwhile, that the project neither supports nor practices conversion therapy, a type of therapy designed to turn gay people into heterosexuals. The American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association oppose such practices.

“We are hopeful that technology companies recognize the harm of apps that promote conversion therapy. The Trevor Project hears from conversion therapy survivors in crisis every day, and we remain committed to ending the harmful practice in every state because we know it contributes to an increased risk of suicidal behavior among LGBTQ youth,” Trevor Project CEO Amit Paley told Axios Wednesday.

Supporters of the app claim it allows gay men and women to square their homosexuality with orthodox Christianity. Pressure on Google will likely intensify as activists press the issue. The company has gotten hit in the past for offering controversial apps, including one in 2018 allowing citizens to report what they consider instances of blasphemy to the Indonesian government.

The so-called Smart Pakem app was created through the Google Play platform and allows users to report “deviant” religious ideas directly to Indonesian authorities. The country’s anti-blasphemy laws target “those who disgrace a religion” or who otherwise express “hostility” to religion. (RELATED: Google App Allows People To Report Blasphemy To Indonesian Government)

Google could also receive internal pressure.

The Daily Caller News Foundation reported March 18 that the company banned a video explaining Christian teaching on same-sex marriage from advertising on YouTube in 2018 after employees pushed and prodded for the ban. The video was flagged in June 2018 in an internal listserv run by Google’s human resources department, according to communications and other internal documents.

Google has not yet responded to TheDCNF’s request for comment.

European Union regulators fined Google a hefty $1.7 billion Wednesday on the basis that the Silicon Valley giant violated various anti-trust laws, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Google engaged in “illegal practices” in a bid to “cement its dominant market position” in advertising markets, Margrethe Vestager, EU’s top competition commissioner, said in a press statement announcing the penalty. Additional criticisms and possible fines were still to come, she added.

Vestager has been a real headache for Google. She has now fined the tech giant more than $9 billion for antitrust violations.  U.S. regulators have so far avoided slapping fines on Google, though President Donald Trump flirted with the idea in November 2018. (RELATED: Trump’s Looking At Antitrust For Silicon Valley ‘Very Seriously’)

Google has already made “a wide range of changes to our products to address the [European] Commission’s concerns,” Kent Walker, the company’s senior vice president of global affairs, said in a statement. Google has not yet disclosed whether it will consider appealing the E.U.’s decision.

Trump, for his part, has a long and sordid relationship with big tech, which he views as antithetical to conservative free expression. He told The Daily Caller in a 2018 interview that he believes Facebook and Google are interfering in the U.S. election on behalf of the Democratic Party.

The alleged New Zealand shooter’s video flew across Facebook in record time despite receiving fewer than 200 total views during the live broadcast, the platform noted in a blog post Monday night.

“Before we were alerted … a user on [troll site] 8-chan posted a link to a copy of the video on a file-sharing site,” Facebook stated in the post. Users began reposting copies of the video shortly after the company took the content down. The first report of the shooting, which resulted in 49 deaths, came in 12 minutes after the livestream ended.

The video was viewed a total of 4,000 times before being removed from Facebook, according to the company’s post. The social media site also removed about 1.5 million videos of the attack globally. More than 1 million of those videos were blocked at upload and were subsequently prevented from being seen. (RELATED: Facebook And YouTube Scramble To Pull Down Videos Of New Zealand Attack)

Authorities have arrested four people in connection with the Mosque shootings Friday, media reports show. A 28-year-old Australian man calling himself Brenton Tarrant connected himself to the shootings after posting a manifesto on his childhood, his fear of white genocide and his desire to send a message that “nowhere in the world is safe.”

Analysts meanwhile worry the Facebook live feature is ungovernable. Sarah Roberts, a professor of information studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, for instance, told The New Yorker on March 16 that it might be impossible for Facebook or YouTube to moderate their platforms for this kind of content.

“There are not enough moderators in the world to monitor every live stream,” said Roberts, whose become an expert on content moderation. “By and large, live streaming came online with none of that stuff sorted out,” she said. “There was no real plan for, ‘What are we going to do when people start using it in the worst possible way?’”

  • Google barred a Christian video on same-sex marriage from advertising on YouTube after backlash from employees, internal communications show.
  • The video said gay people are welcome as Christians but are called to follow Christian teachings on sex and marriage.
  • A Google VP agreed the video was too offensive to air as an advertisement.
  • Google HR highlighted the video and response in an internal newsletter dedicated to policing “microaggressions.”

Google banned a video explaining Christian teaching on same-sex marriage from advertising on YouTube after backlash from upset employees, according to internal Google communications reviewed by The Daily Caller News Foundation.

The video was flagged in June 2018 in an internal listserv, “Yes at Google,” which is run by Google’s human resources department, according to those communications and other internal documents, which a source shared with TheDCNF on the condition of anonymity.

The listserv has more than 30,000 members and is devoted to policing “microaggressions” and “micro-corrections” within the company, according to its official internal description.

The internal backlash to the video grew large enough to merit a response from a Google vice president, who said the video would no longer be eligible to run as an advertisement, the human resources team announced to the listserv. (RELATED: ‘Disrespectful’: Google Employees Melt Down Over The Word ‘Family’)

Christian radio host Michael L. Brown argues in the video that gay people are welcome as Christians but that, like every other person, they are called to follow Christian teachings on sex and marriage.

Brown has spoken out in the past against “homo-hatred” and “ugly rhetoric” directed at gay and lesbian people by fringe groups like the Westboro Baptist Church.

In the video, he describes same-sex relationships as “like other sins, but one that Jesus died for.”

The belief that sex is meant to take place in the context of a male-female marriage — as argued by Brown — is central to most major Christian denominations’ marital teachings.

WATCH:

Google HR highlighted in the listserv a “representative” comment from an employee who took offense that Brown’s video had appeared as an advertisement on channels operated by gay and lesbian YouTubers, the documents show.

“I cannot see how this can be allowed when the specific idea of LGBT videos is to allow the creators to feel free to share their content and be comfortable that anti-LGBT advertisers would not be attached to their content,” the employee wrote. “This seems very counter to our mission, specifically around PRIDE 2018 timeframe.”

Google’s vice president for product management and ads, Vishal Sharma, agreed that the video was too offensive to air as an advertisement.

“Thank you for raising this very important issue. It means a lot to me personally and those of us working on this across the Ads and YouTube teams. YouTube is an open platform and we support the free expression of creators with a wide range of views,” Sharma wrote in his response, which was included in the listserv.

“But we don’t allow advertising that disparages people based on who they are – including their sexual orientation – and we remove ads that violate this basic principle,” Sharma continued.

“After careful and multiple reviews over the course of a few days, our teams decided to remove the ad in question here as it violates our policy. We’ve communicated this to the advertiser and have been in touch with creators who have been actively engaged on this issue,” Sharma added, again expressing his gratitude for the internal feedback.

Brown first noted in a June 2018 blog post that his video was barred from running on ads.

The episode is indicative of the tension between Google’s liberal office culture and its public commitment to free expression.

Other internal documents previously obtained by TheDCNF showed Google employees melted down after an executive used the word “family” in a weekly, company-wide presentation.

Many Google employees became angry that the term was used while discussing a product aimed at children because it implied that families have children, those documents showed.

Then, too, the internal backlash caught the attention of executives at Google. A company vice president addressed the controversy and solicited feedback on how Google could become more inclusive.

Additional internal communications previously obtained by TheDCNF showed that Google employees debated whether to bury right-of-center media outlets in the company’s search function as a direct response to President Donald Trump’s election in 2016.

The Daily Caller and Breitbart were singled out as outlets to potentially bury, those communications revealed. A Google spokeswoman said in response that the conversation did not lead to manipulation of search results for political purposes.

Patrick Moore claimed Saturday that Google had removed his photo from the list of founders of Greenpeace.

“Oh my! @Google has removed my photo and name from the ‘Founders of @Greenpeace.’ It was still there 2 days ago but now I am erased. Tech Tyranny!!”

Moore explained that his first screenshot was taken a few days earlier, while the second was taken on Saturday morning. Both used the search terms “who are the founders of Greenpeace?”

The Daily Caller was able to independently verify on Sunday that a search entering that query returned as Moore claimed, without his photo.

Moore has face criticism recently for standing against the Green New Deal as presented by Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. (RELATED: Greenpeace Co-Founder: ‘Climate Crisis Is Not Only Fake News, It’s Fake Science’)

General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had harsh words for Google’s relationship with China during a Thursday Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

“The work that Google is doing in China is … indirectly benefiting the Chinese military,” Dunford told committee members during the defense budget hearing.

“Look, we’re the good guys. And the values that we represent, and the system that we represent is the one that will allow you, and has allowed you, to thrive,” he said in a paraphrase of how he describes the situation to “industry partners.”

Dunford characterized the work Google and other companies do in China as having “indirect benefit” before going even further.

We watch with great concern when industry partners work in China knowing that there is that indirect benefit. And frankly, ‘indirect’ may be not a full characterization of the way it really is. It’s more of a direct benefit to the Chinese military.

Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley, a vocal opponent of some Big Tech practices, tweeted video of Dunford’s statement, calling it a “must watch video.” (RELATED: Half As Many Google Employees Protested Building Chinese Surveillance Tech As Protested Pentagon Project)

“We are in a struggle with the Chinese government over whether or not they’re going to become a regional or maybe global hegemon with values very different from ours, certainly values that do not favor freedom in the world, and we have an American company that does not want to do work with our Defense Department, which is one thing, but they’re happy to help the Chinese … military, at least indirectly,” said Hawley. “I think that’s just extraordinary.”

When asked by CNN, a Google spokesperson “declined to address Dunford’s comments that the company’s work was benefiting the Chinese military,” but did issue a statement to the network on work it does do with the Pentagon.

“We deeply respect the US military and we are working with them to solve problems in areas like cybersecurity, logistics, transportation and planning,” the spokesperson told CNN.

Democratic California Sen. Kamala Harris appears to have pulled a fast one on newly announced 2020 primary opponent Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke.

Shortly after the failed Democratic Texas Senate candidate announced his bid for the 2020 presidential nomination, Harris was asked about him on MSNBC. She told guest host Peter Alexander that “the voters would decide” whether O’Rourke would be her main source of competition, but added, “The more the merrier,” as far as she’s concerned.

Harris went on to say that the Democratic 2020 field so far represented “an embarrassment of riches,” adding, “I think it’s going to a robust and healthy process and I’m looking forward to it.” (RELATED: Pence Press Sec Blows Up Kamala Harris Claim That VP’s ‘No Women Alone’ Policy Hurts Women)

But Harris may also be hedging her bets with a little bit of search-engine manipulation.

Somebody’s PR team might be getting a raise for this.
