A set of human remains discovered in Utah canyon on Sunday may be those of a woman who was last seen going for a run over a year ago, according to officials.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release a man contacted authorities around 8:30 p.m. to report he discovered the remains while climbing in American Fork Canyon near the Swinging Bridge picnic site, located about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City.

“The man said he hikes regularly in that area but had never before hiked in this particular ravine,” police said.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon told FOX13 the area was “very difficult to get up” on the north side of the canyon, about 850 feet from the floor, and was not a place where people commonly go hiking.

“For whatever reason, this gentleman decided he wanted to go up this ravine,” Cannon said

Investigators discovered several personal items located with the remains that are consistent with descriptions of property known to be owned by 24-year-old Jerika Binks, according to police.

Binks was last seen on Feb. 18, 2018 when she told her roommate that she was going for a run. Trail cameras picked her up as Binks ran down the Timpanogos Cave Trail, but that was the only sign of her, according to FOX13.

An extensive search of the canyon afterward by Utah County Search and Rescue turned up nothing until the discovery Sunday.

Cannon told FOX13 that Binks was a fit runner and hiker, and loved being outdoors.

“Based on what we know of her likes and her interests, it’s not a surprise,” Cannon said.

Police said while there was evidence of injury, there is “no evidence at this stage of the investigation” to suggest foul play was involved.

The remains were recovered by the sheriff’s office on Monday, and have been taken to the medical examiner’s office to identify them and determine a cause of death.

Four people were shot dead in 3 separate locations across a city in western Canada in a series of “targeted” attacks on Monday that may have all been sparked by a neighborhood dispute, according to a wife of one of the victims.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Supt. Ted De Jager said at a news conference the killing spree began around 10:30 a.m. outside a home in downtown Penticton, British Columbia.

As authorities were responding to the initial shooting, a second call of another incident came in from the south end of the city. When authorities went to the home involved in the second shooting, they discovered the bodies of 3 people in two locations.

By 11:30 a.m., a 60-year-old man turned himself in at the front desk of an RCMP station in the city, CBC News reported.

The four victims — two men and two women — were all killed within a 3-mile radius.

Renate Winter, the wife of the first victim – 71-year-old Rudi Winter – told the Vancouver Sun she believed the shootings were likely linked to a neighborhood dispute.

Winter said that she and her husband lived next to the estranged wife of the alleged gunman and had a contentious relationship.

“We cut a tree down in our yard and she had a fit, so anytime we did anything she had a fit, so we don’t talk to her,” she told the Vancouver Sun. “She called the cops because my husband was putting rocks in between our properties, and maybe his big toe went on her property.”

A dog that ended up stranded in the middle of the Gulf of Thailand, paddling some 130 miles away from shore may soon have a home after being rescued by oil rig workers on Friday.

Workers spotted the animal’s head poking up above water as the dog paddled through the ocean towards the platform.

“Finally, we decided to tie a rope around his neck and pull him to our site,” Vitisak wrote. “We had to race against time as wind waves might sweep him away.”

The brown Aspin dog was eventually pulled from the sea safely, but “looked exhausted,” according to Vitisak.

The pooch was believed to have fallen into the sea from a fishing trawler, the Bangkok Post reported. She has now been named “Boonrod” which in Thai means “making a spiritual donation for good luck in the future.”

An Idaho man pleaded guilty on Friday to a cold case killing from 1992 in Washington state after he was arrested based on evidence recovered from a cigarette butt that connected him to another unsolved slaying.

Lee Miller, 54, admitted to killing 57-year-old Marilyn Hickey, a former friend of his in Bremerton, Wash., KOMO-TV reported.

Miller was arrested in January after detectives used DNA evidence that was first discovered during an investigation of the 1994 murder of 49-year-old Cheryle Barratt in Idaho.

Documents obtained by the Idaho Statesman said Hickey was believed to have been stabbed post-mortem.

Semen was found at the scene, but officials were unable to match it at the time. The case eventually went cold until 2006 when DNA found at the Barratt murder ended up matching unknown DNA from the Hickey slaying, according to the Statesman.

After the Boise Police Violent Crimes Unit and detectives from the Bremerton Police Department compared notes, investigators worked to identify Miller as a suspect.

When Miller tossed out a cigarette, officials were able to take a DNA sample that ended up matching.

ISIS has tasked one of its terror bosses with moving militants out of Syria and into Europe, newly procured documents show.

Newly obtained documents by The Sunday Times show ISIS has a member tasked with “bringing in migrants and taking out brothers who have been given jobs” as a way to move fighters and money from Syria through Turkey into Europe.

The documents were obtained by the paper after being found on a hard drive dropped by members of an ISIS cell during a battle near the group’s tiny remaining stronghold in Syria earlier this year.

In a bid to stay relevant, the terror group — which recently lost nearly all of its self-proclaimed “caliphate” in Iraq and Syria — is planning to launch a fresh wave of attacks in Europe and the Middle East inspired by past atrocities: the 2015 Paris attacks that killed 130 people and 2017 truck attack in New York City that left eight dead.

Among the documents on the hard drive is a letter signed by six ISIS leaders and addressed to 47-year-old leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, which lays out the group’s new strategy of operations involving bank robberies, vehicle rammings, assassinations and computer hacking.

Operations around the world are to be directed by an ISIS member named Abu Khabab al-Muhajir, who controls two terror cells in Germany and one in Russia. Initial goals of the terror cells are to steal money to fund the group, the papers say.

“Killing infidel venture capitalists, hacking banks through bank accounts, bank robberies or robberies of places that are pre-studied. After any operation of this kind, we will send the money as we procure it,” according to a letter obtained by The Sunday Times.

The terror cells are also tasked with committing attacks, including vehicle-ramming operations that listed the 2015 Paris attacks and “Manhattan attack” as inspiration. Letters obtained by

In another letter to Baghdadi in December, an ISIS commander named Abu Taher al-Tajiki lists possible targets.

“We will tell you here in our letter the targets that we will hit, Allah willing, and they are targets that will destroy the economic world in Europe and spread horror in the hearts of the enemies of Allah,” he wrote.

BASHAR ASSAD MOVES TO REGAIN FULL CONTROL OF WAR-TORN SYRIA WITH ISIS ALL BUT DEFEATED

Two operations that were to take place 10 to 20 days after the initial letter was sent included targeting a high-speed train in Germany and an oil pipeline in a petroleum refinery near the Swiss city of Base to cause “economic disaster.”

ISIS is planning on having terror cells conduct attacks similar to the 2017 truck attack in New York City that left 8 dead, according to newly obtained letters.

Days after the December letter to ISIS leaders was written, an ISIS flag was discovered near train tracks in Berlin where overhead wires had been damaged, according to the Sunday Times.

A man was arrested in Vienna last month in connection with the Berlin incident and another in Bavaria in October, where a high-speed train hit a steel cable pulled across the tracks when traveling between Nuremberg and Munich.

A conductor had mistaken the sound for a shortened circuit until authorities found the wire that was stretched across the train’s path and wooden wedges were placed on the tracks, DW reported at the time. No refinery attack was ever reported in Switzerland.

Officials believe that the incidents show ISIS supporters across Europe are still linked with the terror group’s remaining leadership in Syria and Iraq, and not just “lone wolf” suspects that may be inspired to commit attacks.

The letters also show that ISIS is still committed to attacks across Europe, with a new pledge of allegiance for prospective members.

“We are your soldiers in Europe, we see what the enemies of Allah do to our Muslim brothers in the home of Islam by killing and bombardment and destruction of houses,” one of the documents read. “And we, oh Emir of Believers, are under your command and subject to your orders and your sword that which you strike with the enemies of Allah in Europe.”
