A group of Good Samaritans came to the rescue of a blind man who fell onto the tracks of the Washington Metro last week in Maryland.

The incident happened Tuesday around 8 a.m. at the Medical Center Station in Bethesda, located just outside the nation’s capital.

Surveillance video shows the moment the man walks along the platform with a white cane before falling onto the tracks below.

Bethesda resident Brendan Cawley told ABC7 he then jumped into action and tried to pull the man out, but realized he couldn’t do it alone.

Two other men can be seen running down the platform to help lift the man.

“I said, ‘We need to get him up now!'” Cawley told ABC7. “And we did.”

Three U.S. military veterans took their lives within 5 days of each other at VA facilities in 2 states earlier this month, prompting a call for action by lawmakers.

The first death was reported on April 5, when the body of 29-year-old Gary Pressley was discovered inside a vehicle in the parking lot of Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin, Georgia.

Pressley had a gunshot wound in his chest and was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m., Laurens County Coroner Richard Stanley told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

SUICIDE RATES UP AMONG YOUNGER VETERANS, VA SAYS

Pressley’s family said he was medically discharged in 2012 after a bad car accident and struggling with mental health care, according to the newspaper.

His mother, Machelle Wilson, told WMAZ-TV that Pressley’s sister called the VA to tell them her brother was threatening suicide from their parking lot just moments before he killed himself

“He told his girlfriend he was going to do it in the parking lot, so they could find his body, so somebody can pay attention to what’s happening, so other vets do not have to go through this,” she told the television station.

The following day in Decatur, Ga., 68-year-old Olen Hancock of Alpharetta killed himself outside the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Hancock had been seen pacing the lobby of the building before going outside and shooting himself, WSB-TV reported.

Officials did not disclose what branch of the military that Hancock served, but Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., the chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, called the deaths “unacceptable and devastating.”

“While we have taken a number of steps to address and prevent veteran suicide, this weekend’s tragic deaths clearly indicate that we must do better,”  Isakson said in a statement.

TRUMP SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER AIMED AT LOWERING VETERANS’ SUICIDE RATE

The third suicide was reported April 9 in Austin, Texas when an unidentified veteran shot himself in front of hundreds of people in a waiting room a VA Clinic. The incident happened shortly after noon, and prompted the building to be shut down, KXAN reported.

“All of a sudden, over the intercom, they have this statement about everyone must clear the building including staff, so it was a little surprising,” Ken Walker told the television station.

Currently, about 20 veterans die by suicide every day — a rate 1.5 times higher than those who have not served in the military.  In February, the Washington Post reported that 19 suicides were reported on VA campuses from October 2017 to November 2018, 7 of them in parking lots.

Richard Stone, executive in charge of the Veterans Health Administration, told Stars and Stripes there have been more than 260 suicide attempts on VA property, 240 of which were interrupted and prevented.

Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., the chairman of the House Committee on Veteran’s Affairs, said Wednesday the deaths were part of a “national crisis” and that a full committee hearing is scheduled for later this month to discuss the issue.

“Every new instance of veteran suicide showcases a barrier to access, but with three incidents on VA property in just five days, and six this year alone, it’s critical we do more to stop this epidemic,” Takano said in a statement. “All Americans have a role to play in reducing veteran suicide, and the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs is going to make this issue a top priority.”

There are resources available to veterans considering hurting themselves. To talk to someone, veterans in crisis are urged to contact the VA crisis line at 1-800-273-8255. You can also text 838-255 for help and also talk in a confidential online chat session.

A family in Connecticut had an unusual guest on Saturday after a man crashed his SUV into their yard and then walked around their house naked.

The Newtown Police Department told FOX61 they were dispatched to the home after residents said a naked man they did not know was wandering around their home.

The residents were out shopping in the morning and returned home to find 35-year-old Joseph Achenbach of Watertown inside.

The so-called “Second City” may eventually become the next state, after frustration regarding Chicago‘s influence over politics in Illinois.

A group of state Republican lawmakers recently signed on to legislation proposing the nation’s third-largest city become the 51st state.

“It’s more of a frustration of the policies than the true belief that Chicago and Illinois would be better off as separate states,” Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer told the State Journal-Register. “I don’t believe that Chicago and the state of Illinois should be separated. Our relationship is mutually beneficial.”

CHICAGO IS MOST CORRUPT BIG CITY, ILLINOIS THIRD MOST CORRUPT STATE IN COUNTRY, STUDY FINDS

Davidsmeyer said he co-sponsored the legislation to spark a discussion about how the city’s politics impact rural residents in downstate Illinois.

“The reality is the city of Chicago is competing with New York City and L.A. and San Francisco, and (downstate is) competing against rural Indiana and rural Missouri,” he told the State Journal-Register. “The policies that come down from Chicago are actually pushing our economic opportunity away.”

Forming a new state from a portion of a current state requires endorsement from Congress and the state legislature, according to the U.S. Constitution.

The bill, HR0101, was introduced in February by state Rep. Brad Halbrook, who said he supports removing the city of 2.7 million people from Illinois because of differing views on issues such as abortion and gun rights.

“Our traditional family values seem to be under attack at every angle,” Halbrook told the Journal-Register. “We are trying to drive the discussion to get people at the table to say these are not our values down here.”

Part of the bill states that: “Numerous counties in the southern and central parts of Illinois are approving resolutions to become sanctuary counties for gun owners, while the City of Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country.”

Halbrook co-sponsored a similar resolution filed last year that failed. This year’s attempt has even less of a chance of succeeding and getting out of the Rules Committee in the Democratic-controlled legislature as Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the leaders of the state House and Senate are all Democrats from Chicago.

“When you have a large population center that seems to control the agenda for the rest of the state, it just kind of creates some issues,” he told the paper.

CHICAGO REDUCES MURDER RATE IN 2018, BUT LEVEL STILL OUTSTRIPS LA AND NY COMBINED

A report in February from the University of Illinois at Chicago found that Chicago was still the top in the ranking of the most corrupt big cities in the nation and Illinois the third most corrupt state in the nation.

The tension between urban and rural areas isn’t exclusive to Illinois. The same has occurred in New York and California, according to a paper published last year by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University.

John Jackson, a visiting professor at the institute and co-author of the paper, told the Journal-Register it was odd that the resentment has persisted in Illinois, but many politicians from southern and central parts of the state often “run against Chicago.”

“We ought to have leaders who get together and coalesce for the good of the state,” he told the paper.

Davidsmeyer said since the resolution has been introduced, it’s spurred a greater discussion about how big an influence Chicago politics has over Illinois.

“People say Chicago’s a huge economy, there’s no way you can survive without them, (but) I have people on the other side saying Chicago’s killing us with their policies, we need to separate,” he said. “I’m one of the people in the middle saying let’s see both sides of it.”

Two police officers in Kentucky are on administrative leave after they fatally shot a shooting suspect in the parking lot of an apartment complex Tuesday who could be seen on a bodycam running at them.

Louisville Metro Police said the shooting took place Tuesday around 3 p.m. at the Spring Manor Apartments in Louisville when officers arrived and confronted the man, identified as 33-year-old Terry Davis Jr.

“His behavior was described as erratic by the witnesses prior to our arrival, and I think we continued to see that once the officers were on scene,” Lt. Aaron Crowell said at a news conference.

Davis was initially found crouching behind a car near the victim, so close that authorities were not able to deliver aid, according to Crowell.

Video taken by a neighbor obtained by WDRB shows Davis moving around the parking lot, as officers and residents of the complex demand he put the gun down.

“He had every opportunity to surrender, to drop the gun,” Tim Bonner, who lives in the apartment complex, told WDRB. “They asked him several times. You could hear them yelling out the commands. And when he took off running with the gun forward, there’s nothing they could do. Nothing they could do.”

Crowell told reporters Wednesday that Davis refused to comply with directions and non-lethal force and charged at Officers William Mattingly and Michael Purcell, who fired multiple times. Police released the video from three different body cameras that showed officers trying to tell Davis to drop the weapon.

“I think there was a great deal of restraint,” he said. “I think they were on scene for about 12 minutes, I believe, while they were trying to de-escalate the individual.”

Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad said the gunman was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. The Jefferson County coroner’s office said that Davis died of multiple gunshot wounds. The original shooting victim was also transported to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

Both officers are now on administrative leave, pending the investigation by the LMPD Public Integrity Unit. This was the second time that Mattingly shot a suspect in the last 5 months, according to WDRB.

A rare piece of history announcing the death of an American president is up for sale, days ahead of the anniversary of the tragic assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

The original telegram notifying the American people of the death of President Lincoln was recently discovered by the Raab Collection, and is now for sale for $500,000.

“This document was the official word to the nation that the President had died,” Nathan Raab, President of the Raab Collection, said in a news release. “It is truly one of our great finds.”

30 ACRES ONCE OWNED BY ABRAHAM LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS SOLD FOR $300,000

Lincoln was shot around 10 p.m. at Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C. on April 14, 1865. He was then rushed to the Peterson House where he was joined by his then Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, and close friend and chief telegraph officer, Thomas Eckert.

After the president was pronounced dead at 7:22 a.m. on April 15, Stanton dictated a telegram as Eckert wrote it down, signing Stanton’s name as the head of the War Department.

“Abraham Lincoln died this morning at 22 minutes after seven,” the telegram read.

Eckert gave it to a runner to take down to the document to the War Department telegraphers, who delivered the news that would shock the nation.

“This is the original of that telegram, completely in the hand of Eckert, then sent on to General Dix, who was responsible for telling the press,” the Raab Collection said in a news release. “This document is how the nation learned of the death of Lincoln and its text is famous.”

It’s a full-blown pollen-pocalypse.

A combination of high pollen levels and approaching storms created a scene out of a movie earlier this week as the skies over Durham, North Carolina turned an eerie yellow/green from all the pollen in the air.

The stunning aerial photos were captured Monday by photographer Jeremy Gilchrist, who described it as “Pollmageddon”

“In April in North Carolina we have an overlap for a couple weeks where we have pretty high counts of tree and then grass also gets started,” Heather Gutekunst, a doctor with Allergy Partners of Raleigh, told WTVD-TV. “So when we see that, if you are allergic to both, we tend to see an escalation in symptoms.”

Last Wednesday, the pollen count in Raleigh reached 3,524 grains per cubic meter, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. In Winston-Salem, the count was nearly 3 times higher – 9,632 grains per cubic meter.

A Texas man may not have full sight, but that didn’t keep him from seeing a law enforcement officer in need and lending a hand over the weekend.

The Fort Worth Police Department said the incident happened Saturday as officers Matthew Brazeal and David Woolbright were investigating a report of shots fired at a Wells Fargo bank.

As the officers attempted to detain the teenage suspects, the pair began fighting back. One of the suspects, who was armed, dropped his weapon to the ground during the “dangerous struggle.”

“Now that a pistol is laying out, there’s no telling who else is around or what’s going on,” Brazeal told FOX4. “He may try to pick it up and use it. We don’t know.”
