Authorities in the nation’s second-largest city are on the lookout for a man suspected of slashing at least eight people while speeding past them on his bicycle — with two new attacks reported in a Los Angeles neighborhood Monday.
The Los Angeles Police Department said in a news release the two attacks happened around 8:40 a.m. in the area of Florence Avenue and Avalon Boulevard in South Los Angeles.
One man reported to officers he was standing on the sidewalk near a bus stop when the slasher rode by and cut him with an unknown type of edged weapon, causing a “severe injury” to his face.
About 15 minutes later, a woman reported a man on a bicycle slashed her face as he rode by, causing a “severe injury to the left side of her face and ear,” according to police.
Both victims were transported by paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department to area hospitals, and both are expected to survive. Police released photos and surveillance video of the suspected slasher, who can be seen on his bike.
The attacks on Monday were among only the latest perpetrated against men and women in the past 11 days, KABC-TV reported.
“He’s striking from the rear, and when you do that, he is cutting all of these people really deep,” LAPD Detective Steve Garcia told the television station. “It’s hard to say if it’s a knife, possibly a box cutter.”
Additional attacks were reported last month in the same area and also in South Los Angeles County, all of which happened during daylight hours. On March 20, a man told police he was slashed by a man on a bicycle around 7:30 a.m. while at the corner of Avalon Boulevard and 59th Street.
The South Gate Police Department also had a similar incident on March 27 shortly after 11 a.m. involving a man who slashed a victim’s face with a sharp weapon, causing a severe injury.

A man who admitted to being part of the MS-13 street gang — and who’d been deported after killing a man on New York‘s Long Island — was arrested again Tuesday in the town where he committed the slaying after illegally re-entering the country, according to officials.
William Umberto Martinez Chavez, 40, was arrested in Huntington, New York on Tuesday morning by agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The 40-year-old, who still has MS-13 tattoos on his chest and stomach, was deported in October 2017 after being convicted of manslaughter and serving time in state prison in connection with a fatal stabbing in May 2000 outside a deli in Huntington, according to federal prosecutors.
NEW FACE ON TEXAS MOST-WANTED LIST: MS-13 MEMBER WITH MS-13 TATTOOED ON HIS FACE
“This office is firmly committed to prosecuting criminals who illegally reenter the United States, especially MS-13 gang members who break into the country after deportations resulting from violent crime convictions,” Eastern District U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said in a statement.
Chavez, originally from El Salvador, was carrying a Mexican driver’s license bearing his photograph and name at this time of his arrest on Tuesday, according to a criminal complaint.

When he was taken into custody, officials took his fingerprints and matched them to sets that were taken when he was originally arrested in 2000 and deported in 2017.
The 40-year-old admitted to officers he had been an MS-13 gang member but claimed to “not be a gang member at this time,” according to the complaint.
Newsday reported Chavez claims he only joined the gang for protection while in prison.

When he was taken into custody, officials took his fingerprints and matched them to sets that were taken when he was originally arrested in 2000 and deported in 2017.
Shortly after the 40-year-old was deported in 2017, he allegedly re-entered the U.S., Newsday reported.

Officials said Chavez has been charged with illegal reentry into the U.S., and faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
“Martinez Chavez is a known MS-13 gang member who was convicted of manslaughter, served his time and was removed from the United States, only to resurface on the same streets after having entered illegally,” ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations New York Field Office Director Thomas Decker said. “It is the job of the brave men and women of ICE to take those who break the laws of this country off the streets and see that they are removed back to their home countries.”

Washington state cops are hunting the person who posed as a ride-share driver in Seattle and raped a woman in who got into the wrong vehicle.
The King County Sheriff‘s Department said in a Facebook post Tuesday the incident happened Dec. 16, after the female victim left a bar in Seattle and went outside to catch a ride-share a friend ordered to get her home.
“She found multiple ride-share vehicles parked out front, so she started asking each of them if they were her rideshare,” King County Sgt. Ryan Abbott told Q13 News. “One of the guys said ‘Oh yeah I’m your ride-share, go ahead and get in.’”
RIDE-HAILING SAFETY BILL INTRODUCED DAYS AFTER SOUTH CAROLINA COLLEGE STUDENT FOUND DEAD
But officials said the man behind the wheel wasn’t a ride-share driver.
While driving the woman home, the man pulled the vehicle over and raped her in White Center, located south of Seattle, according to police.

“Then after he raped her, he got her address and drove her to her house,” Abbott told Q13 News.
Surveillance footage released by the sheriff’s office captured the man identified as a person of interest near the victim’s home as he unlocked her door and handed her cell phone back.

News of the incident in Washington state comes just days after a University of South Carolina student was kidnapped and killed after she got into a car she mistakenly believed was her Uber.
Ride-share users told Q13 News on Tuesday that people getting into the wrong vehicle is common.
“I called an Uber yesterday at the airport and another person tried to take my Uber,” Un Jung, who was visiting Seattle from Arkansas, told the television station.
In the South Carolina incident, officials said the man accused of killing Samantha Josephson activated the child locks in his backseat so the doors could be opened only from the outside.
Police said users should make sure to check the license plate and vehicle make/model and verify the driver’s photo and name match before getting into a ride-share vehicle. Users should also ask the driver to tell them your name, according to police.
“There’s been other instances where child lock safety has been on in the backseat, so something horrible might happen and the victim can’t get out,” Abbott told Q13 News.

Joseph Gorzoch, of Bensalem is facing additional time behind bars after he was caught lying to a judge. He previously was caught lying about serving in the military. (Bucks County Jail)
A Pennsylvania man already facing prison time — and already in hot water for lying about his military service and his mom’s death — is going to be spending even more time behind bars after a judge caught him telling another tall tale.
Joseph Gorzoch, 41, of Bensalem was found to have lied when he told authorities he completed a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program while at the Bucks County Jail. In this instance, Gorzoch was undone by math: officials realized he couldn’t have completed the 90-day program if he was only incarcerated for 67 days.
Deputy District Attorney Bob James checked on previous statements Gorzoch made to a judge about completing the program, which would have helped him receive a lesser sentence in cases involving two separate DUI charges and a theft incident.
“He technically turned what could have been a 1-to-2-year sentence into a 5-to-10-year sentence by lying to everybody,” James told KYW News Radio.
TEXAS MAN BRANDISHED BB GUN, HIT MAN AND 10-YEAR-OLD GIRL WITH HAMMER, POLICE SAY
Gorzoch had previously shown an aversion to the truth when he claimed to have been injured while serving in Afghanistan as a U.S. Navy sergeant as part of a bid to receive a lighter sentence for a pair of DUI charges.
James, who is a U.S. Air Force veteran, said he knew something was wrong with the story since the Navy doesn’t have the rank of sergeant.
He told the Bucks County Courier-Times that the false claim was dishonoring those who actually served and noted Gorzoch has also lied about his mother’s death in order to have another court case delayed.
SUSPECT IN NJ NANNY’S MURDER IS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT FROM HONDURAS, AUTHORITIES SAY
In March, the 41-year-old was sentenced to four to eight years in state prison and two years of probation after he claimed to have completed the 90-day addiction program, FOX29 reported. But after the truth emerged, James filed a motion of reconsideration, and a judge decided to add one to two years to Gorzoch’s sentence in light of the most recent lie — extending his sentence in state prison to 5-to-10 years.

“I believe he’s a sociopath,” James told KYW, “and he’s going to double down every time he comes into court with a different story, different excuse.”

A 12-year-old boy in Michigan has decided he’s not going to wait for officials to fill the large potholes dotting a street near his home and is instead getting his hands dirty and filling the craters himself.
Monte Scott starting filling potholes last week using a shovel and dirt from his backyard in Muskegon Heights after he grew fed up with the state of neighborhood roads.
“I didn’t want people messing up their cars like my mom did,” he told WZZM-TV. “If somebody were to drive down the street and hit a pothole, and then would have to pay like $600-700 to get their car fixed, they would be mad.”
SCIENTISTS HOPE BACTERIA COULD BE THE CURE FOR POTHOLES
The 12-year-old didn’t tell anyone of his plans. His mother, Trinell Scott, told the television station she only found out after she got a text message from her niece saying she saw Michael in a video posted to Facebook filling in the holes.
In the video, Monte can be seen filling in a pothole on the road that’s larger than the base of his trash can.
“He just took it upon himself to [fix the road],” Trinell Scott told WZZM. “That’s just the type of kid he is. When he sees there’s a problem or a need, and he thinks he can fix it, he’ll try to fix it.”
The video has been viewed more than 62,000 times since it was posted on Wednesday.

County and city officials have not yet commented on the 12-year-old’s endeavor, but the issue of crumbling roads across Michigan is something that’s struck a chord with residents.
Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who campaigned in 2018 on a bold promise to “fix the damn roads” has proposed to nearly triple the state’s per-gallon gasoline tax to make it the highest in the nation. Her plan is pending legislative approval, according to FOX2.

Authorities in North Carolina arrested a man Monday after a wild parking lot scene in which a stolen ambulance crashed into several vehicles — a stunning episode that was caught on video.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police told FOX46 the incident happened around noon in the parking lot of a business in southeast Charlotte.
Paramedics from the Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency, also known as Medic, had responded to a call about a half hour earlier and were treating a patient when a person suddenly approached the vehicle and got inside.

The crew was able to get out of the ambulance before the man took off in the stolen vehicle. He traveled across the parking lot before crashing into several vehicles.
In a video obtained by FOX46, a woman can be heard reacting as the ambulance strikes the parked vehicles.
“Oh my God! I cannot believe what we’re watching!” the woman can be heard saying.
No one was injured during the incident, but several vehicles were damaged.

Three people were hurt — including one who suffered a “moderate to major injury” — when a hot air balloon hit a power line in Northern California on Monday, officials said.
The incident happened around 8:10 a.m. in Yountville, located in Napa County in California’s Wine Country.
“As they descended, according to the pilot, [they] may not have been able to see the power lines, or did not pick them up, and ended up passing between two power poles, taking down the lines as it passed through,” Battalion Chief Jason Martin of Cal Fire Napa County told KTVU.

The three passengers on board sustained electrical burns of varying degrees, according to fire officials.
Martin told KTVU that two minor injuries were reported, while a person with a “moderate to major injury” needed to be airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center Burn Center in Sacramento.
“It came down a pretty good speed. But, like I said, you can’t steer them,” construction foreman Eric Young told KTVU. “You can’t operate them. So when they come down, they come down.”
HOT AIR BALLOON-CRASH LANDS IN SAN DIEGO NEIGHBORHOOD
The incident in Yountville came a month and a half after another hot air balloon was forced to make a hard landing on Skaggs Island in neighboring Sonoma County when high winds were reported.
Officials said the pilot was forced to make the emergency landing because high winds were pushing that hot air balloon toward power lines

Between 1964 to 2014, the U.S. experienced about 15 balloon accidents a year. But in all that time, only 70 people were killed, according to KTVU.

A massive waterspout roared ashore into a town on the Malaysian island of Penang on Monday, damaging dozens of buildings as stunned residents took to social media to share images of the towering whirling column of air.
The spout was reported around noon after a heavy downpour off the coast of Tanjung Tokong, located on the northeastern coast of the island.
The waterspout was seen spinning for about 5 minutes before it briefly moved onto land and damaged up to 50 homes, Channel News Asia reported.

After moving into the land, some houses had their roofs ripped off and several trees were knocked down by the waterspout. Even with the damage, a defense spokesman told reporters that no injuries were reported.

“We are currently busy clearing the debris from houses which were ripped off by the storm,” the spokesman said.
Resident Mohd Fareez Othman told the New Straits Times that he was forced to take cover in a nearby building after spotting the waterspout moving in.
“It was huge,” he said. “I have lived here for more than 20 years, and have never seen such an incident before.”

Residents posted photos and video to Facebook and Twitter to show the encounter with the massive column of swirling air.
“The sound of the wind was deafening and I saw part of the roof of my house being blown away by the wind,” resident Nona Khalid said, according to Channel News Asia. “Indeed it was very scary and took place for the first time in the 50 years I have been staying here.”
A waterspout is a “whirling column” of air and water mist, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They can fall into two categories: fair weather waterspouts and tornadic waterspouts.
“Tornadic waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water, or move from land to water. They have the same characteristics as a land tornado,” the agency notes. “They are associated with severe thunderstorms, and are often accompanied by high winds and seas, large hail, and frequent dangerous lightning.”
Fair weather waterspouts are generally not associated with thunderstorms, and form in “light wind conditions so they normally move very little.”

If a waterspout moves onshore, a weather service would issue a tornado warning, as some can cause “significant damage and injuries to people,” according to the NOAA.
“Typically, fair weather waterspouts dissipate rapidly when they make landfall, and rarely penetrate far inland,” according to the agency.

North Dakota cops probing a mysterious quadruple homicide at a property management company say the person responsible is still at large — but that’s about the only bit of information authorities are disclosing.
Officials remain tight-lipped about a description of the suspect, a potential motive for the killings and any details about the woman and three men found dead inside the Bismarck business.
Chief Jason Ziegler said Monday there is no danger to the public based on evidence recovered at the crime scene, but he didn’t elaborate on what that evidence is or why cops believe the danger has subsided.
Authorities still don’t have a motive in the killings, but there is at least one thing officials are sure of.
“These four people didn’t do it themselves,” Ziegler said at news conference.
4 FOUND DEAD AT NORTH DAKOTA BUSINESS IN HOMICIDE CASE, POLICE SAY
The bodies were discovered around 7:30 a.m. Monday by officers responding to a medical call at RJR Maintenance and Management in Mandan. Ziegler described the crime scene as “rare,” but did not elaborate on exactly what that meant.

“It’s quite a large crime scene, so it’s not something that’s going to be easy for us to get in and do quickly,” Ziegler said of the pace of the investigation.
Officers spent Monday combing through the building, which includes an office area in the front and a large warehouse area in the back, and planned to be there “as long as it takes us to get everything that we need,” Ziegler said.
Gina Kessel, 52, of Mandan, showed up at the business Monday to pick up her son, Mitchell Kessel, an employee there. She told the Associated Press that Mitchell “called me, said something is going on,” but didn’t tell her what exactly.

Ziegler said he was not aware of officers responding to any other recent incidents at the business that might have been connected to the killings. Authorities are also waiting on autopsies from the medical examiner’s office to confirm the cause of death of the victims.
“At this time the bodies have not been properly identified, therefore the next of kins have not been identified,” Ziegler said. “This is currently being treated as a multiple homicide investigation.”

The building has many surveillance cameras, Ziegler said. He also asked other businesses in the area that might have video footage to come forward.

On Monday, people heading to the building looking to pay rent, and do walk-throughs for rentals were surprised when they walked up to a crime scene.
“I came here because nobody was answering the phone,” Suzette Wall told KFYR-TV.

The company posted to Facebook early Monday that it was closed for the day. RJR’s website identifies the business as a family-owned company that has been handling commercial and residential properties in Bismarck and Mandan for more than 20 years. Its services include collecting rent for landlords, paying mortgages, re-renting apartments, building and grounds maintenance, lawn care and snow removal. It also rents out storage units.
Judy Praus, 70, told the AP she was a longtime friend of the owner’s family and had just seen them at a restaurant Saturday. She said she also knew a lot of employees but had no details on any of them.
“When I was notified, I shattered,” she said. “Unbelievable.”

The decision to drop charges against “Empire” star Jussie Smollett may have stoked controversy in Chicago, but the actor still has the backing of a prominent California Democrat.
U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., was honored over the weekend at the NAACP Image Awards, where Smollett was also nominated — but lost — for best-supporting actor in a television drama for his role as Jamal Lyon on the Fox series. He was edged out by “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams.
In an interview with “Extra,” Waters said it was the “correct thing” for prosecutors to dismiss all 16 felony counts against Smollett, who is black and gay. The “Empire” actor was accused of faking a racist, anti-gay attack on himself in January. Authorities said that in return for the charges being dropped, Smollett agreed to forfeit the $10,000 he put up to get out of jail and completed community service.

U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif. said she was “looking forward” to seeing actor Jussie Smollett “very soon.” (AP)
“First of all, we probably will never know all of the details,” Waters told “Extra.” “We’ve heard a lot of information. No one was hurt — that is, physically, killed, shot — he never committed a crime before, he forfeited the bail and it’s this kind of situation where they close the case all over the country every day. I have learned this isn’t unusual.”

Waters, the Democratic chairwoman of the House Financial Services Committee, said the case received a lot of attention because Smollett is “An extremely talented man who people have come to love because he is on TV.”
“I’m hopeful that he will go on with his career and be successful,” she said.
Even though he lost this time, Smollett has been nominated for four years in a row and won in 2017.
