WILMINGTON, N.C. – Charges have been dropped against a North Carolina man accused of leaving his pet fish behind without food when he was evicted.
New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David told news outlets Tuesday that 53-year-old Michael Hinson is no longer charged with animal cruelty and abandonment. He says fish aren’t protected under related statues that define “animal” as amphibians, reptiles, bird and mammals, excluding humans.
Officials say Hinson was evicted from his Wilmington home last month and left behind an unhealthy Oscar fish in a dirty tank. He was arrested last week after officials found the 6-inch fish, which is being nursed back to health at an aquarium store.
Sheriff’s Lt. Jerry Brewer said this was the county’s first animal cruelty case involving a fish.

Officials say Hinson was evicted from his Wilmington home last month and left behind an Oscar fish in poor health in a dirty tank. Hinson couldn’t be reached by telephone and court records don’t list an attorney.
The 6-inch fish is being nursed back to health at an aquarium store.
Lt. Jerry Brewer says it’s the county’s first animal cruelty case involving a pet fish, but this “is a life like any dog or cat.”

WILMINGTON, N.C. – A North Carolina man convicted of killing his stepdaughter and a missing woman whose body has never been found has now been convicted in another slaying.
The StarNews reports U.S. Army veteran James Opelton Bradley was found guilty Tuesday of first-degree murder in the 2013 death of Elisha Tucker. He’s set to be sentenced Thursday.
Bradley served 23 years in prison in the slaying of his 8-year-old stepdaughter and was released from custody in March 2013. Tucker was reported missing that August.
Another woman, Shannon Rippy Van Newkirk, was reported missing nearly a year later in April 2014. Authorities searching for Van Newkirk’s body instead found Tucker’s, which had been stuffed in trash bags and buried in a field. Bradley was convicted in Van Newkirk’s presumed death in 2017.

WILMINGTON, N.C. – A slavery-themed game played at a North Carolina elementary school during Black History Month has prompted an investigation.
News outlets report the New Hanover County Board of Education released a statement Monday saying that using a game to teach about slavery was inappropriate. A fourth-grade teacher had students at Codington Elementary play a role-playing game called "Escaping Slavery," revolving around the Underground Railroad.
According to WECT-TV , the game included a "Freedom Punch Card" that would send teams that had accrued too many penalties "back to the plantation to work as a slave."
The statement says the board understands the lesson’s purpose and teachers didn’t intend to "downplay or trivialize slavery." Schools spokeswoman Valita Quattlebaum says no personnel have been penalized.
Nonetheless, the board has requested a report from the superintendent.
