KARACHI (Reuters) – Pakistan has “reliable intelligence” that India will attack again this month, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Sunday, as tension over a February standoff between the two nuclear-armed neighbors had appeared to ease.

The attack could take place between April 16 and 20, he said.

A suicide car bombing by Pakistan-based militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary police on Feb. 14 and the risk of conflict rose dramatically on Feb. 27, when India launched an air strike on what it said was a militant training base.

The following day Pakistan shot down an Indian fighter jet and captured its pilot who was later released.

“We have reliable intelligence that India is planning a new attack on Pakistan. As per our information this could take place between April 16 and 20,” Qureshi told reporters in his hometown of Multan.

He did not elaborate on what evidence Pakistan had or how he could be so specific with the timing, but he said Prime Minister Imran Khan had agreed to share the information with the country.

India’s foreign office didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Khan blamed India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for “whipping up war hysteria” over claims that India shot down a Pakistani F-16 during the February standoff.

India said it, too, had shot down a Pakistani aircraft and the air force displayed pieces of a missile that it said had been fired by a Pakistani F-16 before it went down.

The success of Indian air strikes on a camp of the Jaish-e-Mohammed militant group in northwestern Pakistan has also been thrown into doubt after satellite images showed little sign of damage.

Pakistan closed its airspace amid the standoff but most commercial air traffic has since resumed and major airports have opened.

Passing up the possibility of being the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft, All-America guard Sabrina Ionescu announced Saturday that she will return to Oregon for her senior season.

Ionescu, the all-time NCAA triple-double leader with 18, guided the Ducks to the Final Four before they lost 72-67 to Baylor in the national semifinals on Friday in Tampa, Fla.

In a post on the Player Tribune titled, “A Letter to Ducks Nation,” Ionescu wrote Saturday, “I came to the University of Oregon as a freshman in 2016-2017. We made the Elite Eight (and lost big).

“I came back to the University of Oregon as a sophomore in 2017-2018. We made the Elite Eight (and lost close).

“I came back to the University of Oregon as a junior in 2018-2019. We made the Final Four.

“And now I couldn’t be happier to announce that I’m coming back to the University of Oregon for the 2019-2020 basketball season. I won’t predict exactly how far we’re going to go … but I’ll just say this.

“We have unfinished business.”

Ionescu averaged 19.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game this season. The Walnut Creek, Calif., product scored 18 points in the loss on Friday.

According to espnW, Ionescu was likely to be the top selection in the WNBA draft, scheduled for Wednesday, had she decided to turn pro. She was eligible to enter the WNBA because she will turn 22 this year.

April 7, 2019

TOKYO (Reuters) – Prosecutors in Tokyo have asked judges to question Carlos Ghosn’s wife in connection with funds allegedly misappropriated by the former Nissan Motor chairman, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said on Sunday.

Prosecutors arrested Ghosn again on Thursday on suspicion he had tried to enrich himself at the Nissan’s expense, in another dramatic twist that his lawyers said was an attempt to muzzle him.

NHK said prosecutors suspect that Ghosn siphoned off part of the payments through a company where his wife, Carole, is an executive to purchase a yacht and a boat.

The prosecutors asked her to meet them for voluntary questioning as an unsworn witness, but the request was turned down, which prompted them to ask judges to question her on their behalf before they open the first hearing on the allegations, the broadcaster said.

Such a request gives judges the power to question on a mandatory basis witnesses who refuse to testify, according to NHK.

Prosecutors were not immediately available for comment on the NHK report.

Ghosn’s lead lawyer, Junichiro Hironaka, said on Thursday prosecutors confiscated Ghosn’s mobile phone, documents, notebooks and diaries, along with his wife’s passport and mobile phone.

Under Japanese law, prosecutors will be able to hold Ghosn for up to 22 days without charge. The fresh arrest opens up the possibility that he will be interrogated again without his lawyer present, as is the norm in Japan.

The additional charge would likely prolong Ghosn’s trial, which is expected to begin later this year, his lawyer has said, adding that loss of access to Ghosn’s trial-related documents could put his client at a disadvantage in fighting his case.

(Reuters) – Ko Jin-young opened a one-stroke lead that could have been higher were it not for some late trouble in the third round of the ANA Inspiration in California on Saturday.

The 23-year-old carded a four-under-par 68 on the difficult Mission Hills course in Rancho Mirage to reel in the overnight leader, Kim In-kyung, in the first women’s major of the season.

Ko posted an eight-under 208 total with one round left, while Kim steadied after a double-bogey at the ninth to shoot a 73.

Kim played a bogey-free back nine, finishing in style by sinking a six-foot birdie at the last that left her only one stroke behind her fellow South Korean.

Another Korean, Lee Mi-hyang (68) was boosted by a hole-in-one at the 17th and jumped into a share of third with American Danielle Kang (70), three shots from the lead.

Ko surged to a four-stroke lead until disaster struck at the par-three 14th.

The 124-yard hole requires no more than a flick with a wedge, but Ko struck the ball a little fat and her ball failed to clear the pond guarding the green.

The resulting double-bogey gave renewed hope to her pursuers, who had been watching helplessly in the proverbial rear-view mirror as the Korean threatened to run away with it.

(Reuters) – South Korean Kim Si-woo birdied the final hole for a one-stroke lead over Canadian Corey Conners after the third round of the Texas Open on Saturday.

A well-judged shot from a greenside bunker left Kim with a four-foot putt at the par-five 18th at TPC San Antonio, which he sank for a three-under-par 69 in conditions that started rainy before clearing up by the back nine.

Kim posted a 15-under 201 total to continue his quest for a wire-to-wire victory.

Conners shot 66 to jump into second place on 14-under while

American Charley Hoffman carded 64, the best round of the day, to vault within two shots of the lead.

Kim almost aced the 16th hole for the second day in a row.

His seven-iron from 190 yards landed a couple of yards in front of the cup and nearly went in on the second bounce before settling four feet away. He missed the birdie putt.

BANGKOK (Reuters) – Thailand began rituals on Saturday for the coronation of King Maha Vajiralongkorn next month, with officials collecting water in ceremonies across the country for use in purification rites.

The elaborate coronation for King Vajiralongkorn will take place over three days, from May 4 to 6, in the capital Bangkok with many Buddhist and Brahmin rituals performed in the month leading up to the event.

The 66-year-old King Vajiralongkorn became Thailand’s constitutional monarch following the death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, in 2016 following a 70-year reign.

His coronation was delayed until after the mourning period for Bhumibol, who was cremated in October 2017.

Reverence for the monarch, who is also the sworn patron of Buddhism in Thailand, is central to traditional Thai culture.

For most Thais, the coronation will be the first in their lifetimes.

The water gathered on Saturday will be use for ablution of the king in the purification and anointment ceremonies on May 4 before the crowning ritual.

The use of water is based on a Brahmin tradition that dates back to the 18th century coronation ceremonies, since the founding of the Chakri dynasty.

Saturday is Chakri Day in Thailand, which observes the beginning of the dynasty.

King Vajiralongkorn holds the title Rama X, or the 10th king of the Chakri dynasty.

The waters were collected simultaneously between 11.52 a.m. to 12:38 p.m. on Saturday – times deemed especially auspicious in Thai astrology – by senior officials from more than a 100 water sources across 76 Thai provinces.

The ceremony was broadcast on all Thai television channels.

The water, stored in traditional vases, will be blessed in Buddhist ceremonies at major temples around the country on April 8 to 9, before being combined in another consecration rite at Wat Suthat, one of Bangkok’s oldest temples, on April 18.

Vajiralongkorn is the second child of King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit’s four children and their only son.

He was educated at private schools in Britain and Australia before attending the Royal Military College Duntroon in Canberra.

According to the official biography, he is a qualified helicopter and fighter pilot, who saw action against communist insurgents in Thailand in the 1970s. He holds the honorary military ranks of general, admiral and air chief marshal.

Vajiralongkorn has spent a significant amount of his adult life abroad, mostly in Germany where he has a home.

BANGKOK (Reuters) – The leader of a new party that has challenged Thailand’s military government was charged on Saturday with sedition, the latest legal action facing the rising star after a disputed March election.

The sedition charge, which was filed by the junta, was the second criminal case opened against Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, 40, since he formed the progressive, youth-oriented Future Forward Party last year.

The 2015 case resurfaced after the Future Forward Party made a surprisingly strong showing in the March 24 election, coming in third with 6.2 million votes.

It was still uncertain which party could form a government after the election, the first since a 2014 army coup. Final results may not be clear for weeks.

Future Forward has joined an opposition “democratic front” alliance that will try to form a government and block junta chief Prayuth Chan-ocha from staying in power.

Police told Reuters the complaint dates back to 2015, when Thanathorn, who was running his family’s auto parts empire at the time, allegedly “provided assistance” to a leader of protesters against the 2014 military coup who violated a junta ban on gatherings of more than five people.

“Thank you for coming out,” he told supporters as he walked into police headquarters to hear the charges.

He asked the crowd to remain peaceful.

“Don’t let today become a tool for those with ill intentions.”

The supporters chanted “Keep going!” Some held up signs with “#SaveThanathorn”, which is also a trending hashtag on Twitter.

Embassy representatives from the European Union, Germany and other countries were at the scene for observation.

Thanathorn is accused of breaking article 116 of the Thai criminal code, the equivalent of sedition, and article 189, for assisting others who committed a serious crime, the police summons showed.

He could face up to nine years in prison if found guilty.

According to electoral law, a criminal conviction could spell electoral disqualification for Thanathorn, who has looked set to become a member of parliament.

Thanathorn also faces a separate cybercrime charge over a speech he made on Facebook criticizing the junta in July.

Prosecutors will decide on April 26 whether to put him on trial for the cybercrime charge.

David Malpass, the Treasury official nominated by President Donald Trump to head the 189-nation World Bank, was elected to the job on Friday.

Malpass was approved unanimously by the bank’s 25-member executive board. He will begin a five-year term next Tuesday succeeding Jim Yong Kim, an Obama administration pick who stepped down earlier this year, three years before his term was to end.

Malpass was serving in the Trump administration as Treasury’s under secretary of international affairs.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and a White House adviser, both praised the choice.

“I look forward to continuing our work to economically empower women globally and further the bank’s core mission of ending poverty,” said Ivanka Trump, who had worked on those issues with Kim.

Mnuchin praised Malpass for pushing reforms at the World Bank during his time at Treasury.

Malpass has been a longtime critic of the World Bank and its sister lending organization, the International Monetary Fund. He has complained that the bank was lending too much money to China at the expense of poorer nations that do not have the same access to global capital markets as China.

However, in his Treasury post, Malpass helped win support last year for a $13 billion funding increase for the bank.

Malpass, 63, will be the 13th president of the World Bank. Americans have always headed the World Bank, while a European has always headed the IMF since both institutions were created in the mid-1940s.

Critics have said this tradition was no longer valid in a new era with the growing clout of emerging economics such as China. However, no other country put forward a candidate to challenge Malpass.

In a note to World Bank employees after his selection Friday, Malpass said that more than 700 million people remain in extreme poverty in the world. Too many people are not seeing an advance in their living standards, with the poorest nations facing the steepest challenges, he said.

“Faced with these challenges, our twin goals of eliminating extreme poverty and achieving shared prosperity are more relevant than ever,” Malpass said. “The Bank Group is strong financially and well equipped with the tools and talent to achieve measurable successes.”

His candidacy was backed by a global lobbying effort led by Mnuchin, who promoted Malpass in discussions with foreign finance officials.

The World Bank board had said last month that it would interview Malpass and expected to make its selection before the World Bank and IMF spring meetings that will be held in Washington next week.

(Reuters) – A jubilant Kim Si-woo aced the 16th hole to push his lead to four strokes after the second round of the Texas Open at San Antonio on Friday.

A group of six players, including headliners Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler, were left in second place after the overnight leader’s hole-in-one.

Kim, who started the day with a one-stroke advantage, drove a nine iron to the green at the 167-yard par-three then watched the ball bounce into the hole.

The South Korean world number 61 tossed his club aside and thrust both arms into the air in celebration at his second career hole-in-one.

Kim, aiming for his third PGA Tour victory, ended the round at 12-under 132 thanks to four birdies and the ace in his second consecutive 66.

Spieth and Fowler, who both shot 68 for the second round in a row, shared second with fellow Americans Harold Varner (66) and Adam Schenk (66) as well as Canadian Corey Conners (67) and Kim’s compatriot Lee Kyoung-hoon (67).

April 5, 2019

(Reuters) – South Korean Kim In-kyung shot a sparkling seven-under 65 for a three-stroke clubhouse lead in the second round of the ANA Inspiration at Mission Hills in Rancho Mirage on Friday.

The former women’s British Open winner made a birdie at the last, her eighth of the day, to close at eight-under 136 in the first major of the year.

Australian Katherine Kirk, who had been tied with Kim earlier, held second at five-under after a 68.

First-round leader Ally McDonald was at four-under following a 72 with South Korean world number one Park Sun-hyun (70) among three at three-under.

Kim, playing the back nine first, rolled in three birdies in a four-hole stretch twice, the second time to go eight under.

She dropped a stroke with her only bogey at the seventh hole but got it back with another birdie to close her round.

“I put some good speed on it,” Kim said of her putting. “I think I got a little bit better job of that today.”

Seven years ago Kim narrowly missed out on the tournament trophy when she failed to convert a one-foot putt on the final hole and lost a playoff.

“Long time it was one of my goals,” she said of winning the major. “But now I am just happy to be out here. I have a better understanding of what I am doing out here.”

Canadian Brooke Henderson had been just a stroke off the lead when a triple-bogey at the par-three 14th ruined her round. She finished the day seven strokes off the lead after a 72.

American Michelle Wie looks likely to miss the projected cut after a 77 left her at seven-over 151.
