‘Gangnam style’ sex crime: K-pop scandals uncover dark side of Seoul’s flashiest district

SEOUL (Reuters) – On a recent weekend night, the dance floor at one of the hottest clubs in Seoul’s swanky Gangnam district held only a few dozen people surrounded by mostly empty tables.

A few months ago, the nightclub would have been packed with hundreds of gyrating men and women, and full tables, many costing 650,000 won ($570) or more for a night of drinking and dancing.

The world was introduced to Gangnam by the 2012 K-pop hit “Gangnam Style,” a parody of the South Korean highlife with a viral tune and amusing dancing that became the first video to reach a billion views on YouTube.

But a wave of sex crimes and other illegal activity has revealed a dark underbelly in the district, driving club-goers and celebrities away.

According to police investigators, a network of pop stars, businessmen and cops are alleged to have colluded and enabled tax evasion, bribery, and prostitution at some of Gangnam’s glitziest clubs.

Most seriously, some are being investigated over the use of date rape drugs to incapacitate women and assault them, sometimes filmed by hidden cameras.

“There aren’t many people coming to Gangnam (clubs) right now,” a worker told Reuters at a club that was relatively quiet, despite not being implicated in any of the allegations. “There’s an investigation on.”

The scandals have already led to the resignation of four K-pop stars, the closure of one of Gangnam’s most lucrative club, and investigations into at least six police officers suspected of colluding with club operators.

President Moon Jae-in called for a thorough investigation, saying the Gangnam club cases suggest possible collusion between police, tax authorities and a new privileged class including celebrities to engage in illegal operations.

More than 500 people have been investigated for drug use and sexual assault and more than 200 arrested in a nationwide roundup since Feb. 25.

Tax authorities have launched investigations into 21 clubs and host bars for possible evasion.

“If we don’t set this right, we cannot call this a just society,” Moon said.

SEX CRIME CONCERNS

The investigations, revolving around two Gangnam clubs, Burning Sun and Arena, began late last year when 29-year-old film art director Kim Sang-kyo says he tried to stop an incident of sexual harassment and was attacked by Burning Sun staff, and then abused by police who instead arrested him.

A government commission concluded that police in Gangnam violated Kim’s rights during his arrest, but Kim is still being investigated for sexual harassment and defamation. He denies any wrongdoing.

Calls to Burning Sun, which closed down after the scandal broke, were not answered, while a man who answered the number listed for Arena hung up when asked for comment. Arena has also been closed since early March for what it said were renovations. Gangnam police declined to comment.

Kim said once he shared his story he began to receive messages from other people who said they had been victimized in Gangnam clubs, and he realized the scope of the problem.

“When people saw me raising questions, they said ‘why you? Why now?’” Kim said. “‘This has been going on for 10 years, 15 years, and you can’t touch it. You can’t win.’ I’ve heard a lot of people say this, and I think it’s really scary.”

The string of scandals gained wider attention when several K-pop stars who had ties to some of the clubs were implicated in crimes unrelated to Kim’s arrest.

Singer Lee Seung-hyun, 28, better known by the stage name Seungri, is under investigation for paying for prostitutes in return for favors from foreign businessmen at Arena.

He is also accused of embezzlement at another club he was involved with until last year.

Lee has denied all wrong doing, but resigned from his position as a member of the boy band BIGBANG. Lee’s lawyer told Reuters this week his client maintains his innocence.

At least three other K-pop stars resigned after they were accused by police of sharing illicitly filmed sex tapes. It is not yet clear whether any of the shared videos and photos were taken at either nightclub.

One singer, Jung Joon-young admitted to having shared videos he took secretly while having sex with women.

“I am truly sorry. I committed a crime that cannot be forgiven,” Jung read from a handwritten statement on March 21.

WEB OF CONNECTIONS

Besides Seungri, who was an internal director at Burning Sun and previously helped run the club, police are investigating two of the club’s co-presidents and an operating director for various crimes including distributing drugs, assaulting a customer, and bribing police.

Investigators have also questioned 15 people and arrested four people with links to Burning Sun on drug charges. At least one club promoter was arrested for distributing illegal sex videos.

A man identified as the de facto owner of Arena, surnamed Kang, was arrested in late March, a Seoul Central District Court spokesman said.

Kang and other Arena executives are accused of tax evasion by avoiding paying 16.2 billion won ($14.31 million) in taxes between 2014-2017. Kang refused to answer questions on March 25 as he emerged from court. He could not be reached for comment.

Authorities are also investigating allegations that club officials provided bribes to police officers.

Six officers are now under investigation for possible collusion with the clubs, including a senior superintendent, lawmakers briefed by Police Commissioner General Min Gab-ryong said.

The superintendent, surnamed Yoon, admitted playing golf and sharing meals with a man known to be Seungri’s business partner, but denies all allegations of corruption.

He is accused of leaking confidential information and accepting bribes, including K-pop concert tickets from singer Seungri, an official at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said.

In Gangnam, former patrons and workers lament the impact the scandals have had on the clubs and the broader entertainment industry, a key identity and export for South Korea.

Kim Se-rim, 27, said she no longer goes to clubs.

“People are like, why would you go when you know there are so much drugs, GHB, rape going on?,” she said, referring to a known date-rape drug. “And they have a point.”

CBS TV Show Advocates Using Political Violence

A promo clip for the CBS legal drama show The Good Fight openly advocates using violence to silence political opinions.

The video features an African-American man walking through the scene of what appears to be a violent demonstration or a riot.

The man says that he previously did not advocate violence, but then saw a video of alt-right leader Richard Spencer being punched in the face and changed his mind.

“Some speech requires a more visceral response,” he states, adding that the Overton Window (the frame of acceptable opinions) is only maintained by “some enforcement”.

“So yeah, this is enforcement. It’s time to punch a few Nazis,” he adds.

The clip then cuts to demonstrators being violent while another man with a baseball bat jumps on top of a vehicle.

Given that many on the far-left think that literally everyone who disagrees with their warped view of the world is a “Nazi,” the term has lost all meaning.

This is merely a dog whistle for fringe extremist Antifa groups who have engaged in political violence against Trump supporters, people carrying American flags, and all manner of other innocent targets who were not “Nazis”.

The clip is also clearly a violation of Twitter’s rules, which state, “You may not make specific threats of violence or wish for the serious physical harm, death, or disease of an individual or group of people.”

Don’t expect it to be removed any time soon.

Bill Maher Warns: Dems Lose 2020 If Trump Turns Immigration Into ‘Woke Contest’

The Democrats are poised to lose the 2020 presidential election if President Trump frames the issue of immigration as a “woke contest” among the left, warned late night host Bill Maher.

During his Friday HBO show “Real Time,” Maher claimed that if Democrats only try appealing to other Democrats, then Trump wins 2020.

“If it becomes a ‘woke’ contest, then the Democrats lose on this,” Maher said. “Yes, they look better, but it’s impossible not to look better next to him!”

Guest Wendy Sherman, who served in Obama’s State Department, gave all the same tired talking about how Trump somehow created the border crisis by “taking away aid” from Central America, and “putting kids in cages,” but that only made Maher chuckle.

“This is what Democrats say, which only gets other Democrats,” Maher told Sherman. “This is not the speech that is going to win any [swing] voters. You’ve [already] got the compassion vote!”

“You’ve got the compassionate vote, you’ve locked it up,” Maher repeated.

President Trump warned Democrats Friday that his administration was considering moving illegal migrants to sanctuary cities to lessen the Border Patrol’s burden on the southern border, and point out that Democrats would likely not accept migrants despite their open borders rhetoric.

“If the Radical Left Democrats all of a sudden don’t want the Illegal Migrants in their Sanctuary Cities (no more open arms), why should others be expected to take them into their communities? Go home and come into our Country legally and through a system of Merit!” he tweeted.

NYT Columnist Backs Reparations Due To The ‘Election of Trump’

On the PBS NewsHour, New York Times columnist David Brooks is somehow expected to be identified as the conservative (or at least center-right) pundit, and he keeps sounding like a leftist instead. On Friday, he came out for reparations because “we’re in a make-or-break moment on race” due to “the election of Trump.”

DAVID BROOKS: “On reparations, I support them, but not for the reasons Joe Biden says. It’s not an act of guilt. It’s not an act of, we did something wrong. It’s a show of respect. It’s a show of respect for the injustices that minorities, members of the African-American community have suffered in our society for hundreds of years, not just slavery, but red-lining and all the way up to the president.”

“So we show respect, and we do it as an act of regard and as an act of resetting. And I have just come to the conclusion. I changed my mind about it, because the practicalities of doing it are really hard. But I changed my mind about it because it just feels like we’re in a make-or-break moment on race. The election of Trump, the atmosphere this has created has created a movement where aggressive gestures have to be taken to show that we’re all part of the same country.”

Elsewhere in the show, PBS produced an eight-minute segment on the Democrats discussing reparations — “40 acres and a Tesla” — and included an old 1975 quote from Joe Biden that expressed the classic opposing view on reparations: Why should today’s Americans pay for a 300-year-old injustice?

Crenshaw Scolds Omar & Ocasio-Cortez For ‘Dishonest Attack’: ‘I’m The Guy Who Went Overseas’ After 9/11

Republican Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw responded to Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota on Friday after the duo criticized him for taking offense to Omar’s description of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

“It’s terrorists who killed almost 3,000 Americans, we should talk about it that way,” Crenshaw told NBC News. “We should talk about it with deference.”

Omar delivered the keynote speech at a fundraiser for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) on March 23, where she was recorded describing the Sept. 11 attacks as merely an event where “some people did something.”

After the Crenshaw replied that it is “unbelievable” that a member of Congress would describe “terrorists who killed thousands of Americans” in such a manner, Omar called on leaders of both parties to join her in “condemning” Crenshaw’s “dangerous incitement.”

“All Rep. Omar had to do was … explain herself,” Crenshaw said. “Say whatever she wants. Say she didn’t mean it … diffuse the situation, but don’t double down, alright? Don’t play the victim card and don’t start making accusations of me — I just think that was uncalled for.”

Ocasio-Cortez immediately came to Omar’s defense and accused the Navy SEAL of not properly supporting 9/11 victims and first-responders.

“You refuse to cosponsor the 9/11 Victim’s Compensation Fund, yet have the audacity to drum resentment towards Ilhan w/completely out-of-context quotes,” Ocasio-Cortez responded to Crenshaw. “In 2018, right-wing extremists were behind almost ALL US domestic terrorist killings. Why don’t you go do something about that?”

Ocasio-Cortez also said Omar has “done more for 9/11 families than the GOP” and that Republicans are “happy to weaponize [Omar’s] faith.”

“It was not taken out of context, by the way, there are a lot of claims that it was — of course it wasn’t. I think everyone should just look at the clip and decide for themselves,” Crenshaw said. “I don’t think it’s out of line to simply call that out and criticize it.”

“This is the height of partisanship — when we can’t just come together and properly assume that we should not diminish the acts of 9/11 by saying things like, ‘some people did something,’” he continued. “That’s not what happened and we should come together and take note of that.”

Crenshaw also expressed his disappointment in the members of Congress who are “trying to deflect attention from Omar by attacking [him], claiming that [he is] not for 9/11 first-responders.”

“This is a really dishonest attack, and let me tell you how I am for 9/11 victims and 9/11 first-responders. I’m the guy who went overseas to make sure this never happens again, to take the fight to the enemy that committed these attacks,” he said. “I would go back and do it every day if I could. So to say that kind of attack, that is the height of partisanship and I’m really disappointed in them saying that.”

Crenshaw served five deployments overseas — while on his third combat tour, he was hit by an IED blast during a mission in Afghanistan that destroyed his right eye and badly injured his left eye. After multiple surgeries, Crenshaw retained sight in his left eye and went on to deploy two more times.

The lack of criticism from the left of Ilhan Omar and AOC is evidence of the left’s double standards. Paul Joseph Watson joins Alex to discuss how conservatives are being persecuted, yet MSM remains silent.

BRUSSELS (Reuters) – EU countries are set to agree an overhaul of the bloc’s two-decade old copyright rules next week, requiring Google to pay publishers for news snippets and Facebook to filter out protected content, despite increasing opposition from some governments.

EU lawmakers at the European Parliament gave the European Commission’s proposal a thumbs up last month, wanting to protect Europe’s creative industry which is worth 915 billion euros ($1 trillion) annually and employs 11.65 million people.

The revamp has been marked by intense lobbying from tech companies worried about the administrative burden and the hit to their revenues and by artists, publishers and performers seeking fair compensation.

The new rules would force Google and other online platforms to sign licensing agreements with musicians, performers, authors, news publishers and journalists to use their work online.

Google’s YouTube, Facebook’s Instagram and other sharing platforms will also have to install filters to prevent users from uploading copyrighted materials. Critics say this could hit cash-strapped small companies rather than the tech giants.

Finland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden have said they will vote against the reforms on Monday, a move unlikely to derail the proposal unless a major EU country weighs in to form a blocking minority.

“We regret that the directive does not strike the right balance between the protection of rights holders and the interests of EU citizens and companies,” the countries, with the exception of Sweden, said in a statement.

Belgium and Slovenia will abstain while Estonia said it was not able to have a view because its government had only just come to power.

Indonesian Prez Using Holograms for Campaign Rallies

Indonesian President Joko Widodo is utilizing holograms depicting his likeness in his rallies to give his campaign a competitive edge for the coming general election.

The tactic has been successful in reaching voters in the rural far-corners of the world’s 4th most populous country.

“This is really helpful in the campaign,” said a Widodo campaign organizer.

Logistically, using the technology is the right choice as the Muslim-majority nation houses over 17,000 islands sprawling at a length greater than that of the U.S.

Widodo’s main rival, ex-general Prabowo Subianto, has so far not used holograms for his campaign.

The April 17th election will be the first time in the country’s history the president, vice president, and legislative branch (People’s Consultative Assembly) will be elected on the same day.

The use of holograms brings into mind the controversial use of deep fakes, the emerging tech that is capable of portraying politicians inaccurately.

In January, an American news station was caught doctoring a video of President Trump to make him look ridiculous.

Correspondingly, deep fakes have caught the concern of leaders in President Trump’s intelligence community, like the Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.

“The speed and adaptation of new technologies will continue to drive the world in ways we can’t understand,” said Coats. “It becomes a major challenge to the intelligence community to stay ahead of the game and have resources directed toward how we need to address these threats.”

Similarly, elections are also vulnerable to Big Tech interference, whether its Google controlling search results to swing 80% of undecided voters or Facebook allegedly stifling online communities under the pretense of “election integrity” efforts.

Fox Host Tucker Carlson has repeatedly voiced concerns over the power media giants have when it comes to influencing politics.

“You’re not going to get a Republican president elected ever until Google is restrained,” said Tucker. “Period.”

Swedish Leftist MP Says “We Assume That All Men are Rapists”

Swedish Left Party MP Linda Snecker asserted that women “assume all men are rapists” and demanded that all men take collective responsibility during a parliamentary debate.

Snecker said that “men’s violence against women governs the entire world structure” and that “the struggle of feminism” was to put a stop to “the violence of men.”

“We women adapt our lives and our behavior to men’s potential threats of violence. Because we cannot see whether you are a rapist or not, we assume that all men are rapists. That is the brutal truth. That’s how a structural problem looks. That is why men must take their collective responsibility. All men,” she said.

Sweden Democrat’s Katja Nyberg hit back, claiming that Snecker was ignoring the true source of the problem – mass immigration.

“The Left Party claims that they stand up for women’s equal value. But why then insist on hiding the main causes of today’s problems with threats and violence against women? They desperately deny the consequences of their own mass immigration policy and instead blame all men, only to hide the facts of rape”, Nyberg said, adding, “If I were to stand in parliament and say that all Muslims are terrorists, I would be charged directly.”

Sweden does have a massive rape problem, which just by coincidence has become notably worse since the country began importing migrant men from countries where respect for women’s rights is somewhat different than in the west.

A study by the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet found that 88 per cent of gang rapists in the Scandinavian country over the last six years have had a migrant background.

Other figures show that migrants from Muslim-majority nations commit 84 per cent of “very violent” rapes in Sweden.

A private study of 4,142 rulings regarding sex-related crimes passed by 40 Swedish courts between 2012 and 2014 found that 95.6% of rapes were committed by men of foreign descent.

Obama’s DHS Head: Border Problem “Is A Crisis By Any Measure”

Barack Obama’s former head of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson warned Thursday that anyone who is still arguing there is no crisis at the border is being purposefully partisan, because the situation is “a crisis by any measure.”

“This is, in my view, having owned this problem for three years, first, I know what a thousand a day looks like. I saw it myself at border patrol holding stations,” Johnson said.

“I cannot begin to imagine what 4,000 a day looks like. It must overwhelm the system.” he added.

“I think we have to get away from Democrat vs. Republican, crisis vs. no crisis.” Johnson continued.

“This is a crisis by any measure, and the solution inevitably is bipartisan. It has to be bipartisan. It requires a change in law,” Johnson urged.

Johnson, who served as United States Secretary of Homeland Security from 2013 to 2017, now routinely warns that action needs to be taken over immigration.

Last month Johnson told MSNBC “we are truly in a crisis” at the border.

“A little bit of context here. When I was in office in Kirstjen Nielsen’s job, at her desk, I’d get to work around 6:30 in the morning, and there would be my intelligence book sitting on my desk, the PDB, and also the apprehension numbers from the day before,” Johnson said.

“My staff would tell you if it was under 1,000 apprehension the day before, that was a relatively good number, and if it was above 1,000, it was a relatively bad number, and I was going to be in a bad mood the whole day.” he continued.

“On Tuesday there were 4,000 apprehensions. I know that a thousand overwhelms the system. I can’t imagine what 4,000 a day looks like. So, we are truly in a crisis,” he urged.

Will Trump Pardon Julian Assange?

According to his lawyer, Julian Assange was arrested on a US extradition request, diminishing the chances that he will receive a presidential pardon.

But why is the Trump administration seeking to prosecute the Wikileaks founder?

Assange exposed war crimes committed at the behest of neo-con warmongers.

It was the war crimes that harmed America’s reputation, not Wikileaks.

This is perfectly in line with the non-interventionist, America first platform Trump ran on.

In 2016, Trump literally said, “I love Wikileaks,” so why does Julian Assange now face the possibility of disappearing into a black hole, never to be heard from again?

Before the Mueller report was finalized, Assange also offered Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) “firsthand” evidence that would prove there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Julian Assange is being officially oppressed for the crime of journalism.

As Edward Snowden tweeted, “Images of Ecuador’s ambassador inviting the UK’s secret police into the embassy to drag a publisher of–like it or not–award-winning journalism out of the building are going to end up in the history books. Assange’s critics may cheer, but this is a dark moment for press freedom.”

Assange’s arrest is merely a petty act of revenge by the deep state, the same deep state that has been at war with Trump.

Trump must pardon Julian Assange. It’s time to find out whether the president sides with his base or with the deep state that has been trying to subvert his presidency for the past two years.
